safari eco lodge santiago

5 personen.

safari eco lodge santiago

safari eco lodge santiago

DAY 1- Arrival at Eco Camp

Arrival at Eco Camp

In the morning, you will be picked up by a local representative either from Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales and taken to EcoCamp Patagonia, located in the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park. Upon arrival at the Eco Camp, you will be immediately greeted by the breathtaking beauty of our surroundings. The camp blends seamlessly with the natural environment, and the eco-friendly design of the lodging domes is inspired by the traditional huts built by the Kawesqar, the indigenous people of the region. Don't let their simple appearance fool you - these domes offer comfort and protection from the elements.

After settling in, we gather for a delicious dinner and a warm welcome from our hosts. Over the course of the evening, we receive a comprehensive briefing on the exciting activities available both at the camp and in the surrounding park. Whether you're interested in hiking, kayaking, or simply taking in the stunning natural beauty, our knowledgeable guides will help you plan your adventure.

*While most activities are included in your stay at our Eco-camp, a limited number of extra cost activities are available for you to choose from. These optional activities are at your discretion, and any fees associated with them will be paid locally.

Note: The available activities depend on a weekly schedule, with three different options offered every day, ranging from easy to difficult. For details on the activities offered on the specific dates of your travel, please inquire with your booking agent.

DAY 2- Patagonia Exploration

*Please note that the itinerary outlined below is provided solely as an example and may be subject to change due to various factors such as weather conditions and availability. We understand that each of our guests has unique interests and fitness levels, and as such, our knowledgeable guide will collaborate with you to personalize your activities and ensure an unforgettable experience that aligns perfectly with your preferences and abilities.

Following a nourishing breakfast, we embark on a scenic walk from EcoCamp to Hostería Las Torres, where we commence our ascent of Ascencio Valley on the eastern face of the Towers. The trail leads us through a variety of breathtaking landscapes, including arid mountain areas, beech forests, and tranquil streams. Our journey culminates as we navigate the challenging moraine, a boulder-strewn terrain that leads us to one of the world's most renowned viewpoints, offering a stunning panoramic view of the Torres del Paine (2,850 m/ 9,350 ft), a trio of imposing granite monoliths created by glacial erosion. After a rewarding uphill climb, we are treated to a full view of the majestic Towers and a glistening glacial lake below. What could be more fitting than having lunch in such a remarkable location? We pause to admire the scenery and enjoy our picnic before retracing our steps through Ascencio Valley and returning to EcoCamp.

DAY 3- Patagonia Exploration

Patagonia Exploration

Today, we commence our adventure with a scenic drive through the park, soaking in the breathtaking views of Paine Grande's snowy peaks and the black, granite spires of Los Cuernos. At Pudeto Dock, we pause to drop off Grey Trek travelers and capture photographs of the abundant guanacos, Andean condors, and unique flora.

Our journey continues with a leisurely stroll along the shores of Lake Pehoe, where we witness the powerful Salto Grande waterfall, formed as Lake Nordenskjold spills into Pehoe. Next, we ascend to Grey Lake and explore its stunning beach. A delightful box lunch awaits us by the lake before we embark on a boat tour across the icy waters, towards the towering blue walls of Glacier Grey, offering an incredible close-up view of the glacier.

Please note that the Grey Glacier boat tour is subject to availability and weather conditions. It is essential to confirm your reservation to participate on the day of your arrival. During the shoulder season (September, October, April), the boat trip may be canceled if the boat's minimum passenger requirement of 15 is not met. In such cases, we will organize an alternative excursion in the park.

DAY 4- Depart Eco Camp

MyTrip to Torres del Paine : 5-Day Wildlife Safari

My name is Ignacia, Trekking & Adventure Travel Specialist at Cascada Expediciones.  Nacha to my friends and colleagues. Last year, I visited Patagonia and joined a WildlIfe Safari in Torres del Paine NP (Chile), and I loved it! Here’s a little story of #MyTrip to #TorresdelPaine:

Wildlife Safari

The good thing about the Wildlife Safari is …you can start any day of the week! (From September through beginning of May). This unique trip takes you through Torres del Paine's highlights and let you enjoy the best of the park's flora and fauna on nature walks, treks and cycling excursions with your local expert guide. Each night, you can pick the excursion for the next day.

I stayed 1 night in a Suite dome, and the rest in our Standard domes. EcoCamp Patagonia’s domes, immersed in the park’s wilderness, provide cozy accommodation, and each night, after dinner and wine you share with fellow travellers in EcoCamp Community Domes and at our Ecobar.

Day 1 of EcoCamp Wildlife Safari. Wednesday

Places: Santiago – Punta Arenas – Puerto Natales – Torres del Paine

I flew from Santiago to Punta Arenas very early in the morning, my flight departed at 5:45am!! We arrived approx at 9:00 am. (if it’s a direct flight, it takes approx 3.5 hours).

At our arrival, Cascada/Ecocamp staff members where waiting for us at the airport. And took us to Punta Arenas to pick up the rest of Ecocamp guests.

Then we began our journey to Puerto Natales (approx 4 hours). We stopped at Ecocamp´s office to check-in and wait for some other travellers who where coming from El Calafate, and went to have a delicious lunch.

After lunch and dessert, we drove to the Milodon Cave (only possible if we take the AM transfer). Our guide explained and showed us the flora & fauna, the geological formation of the cave and the history of this area. (sloth remains were found there).

Finally, we started our journey to EcoCamp! The funniest and amazing thing of all, is that I felt that I had experienced a wildlife Safari even before arriving! We saw lots of animals on the way, and I do not have words to describe the landscape. Some of the animals we saw were: chingüe (skank), guanacos, condor, armadillo, ducks, birds, cows, lambs. So beautiful!

Approx at 7:45pm we finally arrived at Ecocamp, where we were welcomed, and left our luggage in our Suite Dome.

Suite Dome

It was a long day, and a long ride, so the Welcome cocktail and some snacks were perfect in this case!! While we enjoyed a handmade Pisco Sour, our Wildlife Safari guide gave us a briefing about the activities for the next day.

And once we picked it, we went to have a lovely dinner, with a great vino!!

Day 2. Wednesday

Places: The base of the Towers!

We would meet at 8:00am. So we were having breakfast approx at 7:30am, in order to be ready on time. After breakfast, we prepared our Box lunch for a 22km adventure, and started the big challenge (fruits, nuts, and a variety of ingredients are available). It was a bit cloudy, but temperature was perfect for a full day hike.

Personally, I am not a fan of trekking poles, but I took a pair just in case, because we highly recommend to bring them. I also packed 3 different layers, and wore all of them along the trail…

Torres del Paine Base viewpoint

After a hearty breakfast we set off from Ecocamp towards Hostería Las Torres and join the uphill path to Ascencio Valley on the Tower's eastern face. Dry mountain spots, beech forests and small rivers line the scenic walk towards the valley. Our big challenge comes as we climb the steep moraine, a mass of boulders leading us towards one of the world's most famous views overlooking the Towers. The famous Torres del Paine (2,900 m/ 9,400 ft) consist of three gigantic granite monoliths, the remains of a great cirque sheared away by the forces of glacial ice.

After an uphill slog, the Towers eventually come into full view, rising majestically before us, with the glacial lake visible below. Is there any better place in the world to have lunch? After feasting on the view and our picnic, we backtrack along the same trail through Ascencio Valley and return to EcoCamp, for a hot shower, briefing of the activities for the next day, and dinner with our new friends. (from all over the world!)

Day 3. Friday

Places: Grey Glacier

I must say, weather in Patagonia is crazy! After breakfast, we board our van and started driving across the park. On this ride, you’ll be amazed by the views of Paine Grande and its snowy peaks, Los Cuernos and the whole Patagonian scene. We made a few stops on the way, at some beautiful viewpoints and took some pictures of the mountains and lakes. Sometimes you were able to see some guanacos playing around, beautiful flowers and birds.

Grey Glacier Tores del Paine

It was a really windy day, and you can see it on the water of Pehoe Lake, where we drove past by… We kept driving towards Grey Lake, and we had the bad news that the navigation was cancelled. But, instead, we went to visit beautiful Grey Beach, so we had the chance to see the glacier far far away, but.. on the shores of the lake, I saw gigantic pieces of ice, real icebergs on glacial water. What a beauty! After this walk, we went for a coffee, as it was really chilly out there, and waited for our van to take us back to Ecocamp.

(*During Shoulder Season (September, October, April and May) the boat trip to Glacier Grey may be cancelled as the boat requires a minimum of 8 passengers to sail, which might not be reached in some cases. If this is the case we will plan an alternative excursion in the Park.) It was good at some point, as I was a little tired of the hike to the towers, and I was really excited about the next day… I wanted to hike up the French Valley (the favourite place of a lot of our travel specialists here at Cascada)…

Day 4. Saturday

Places: Navigation on Pehoe Lake and French Valley

We departed after breakfast, around 8:00am. All set, and ready to hike 21km / 13 miles on a medium (low) difficulty trail. All this at approx 200m / 660 ft over the sea level.. (no altitude sickness on this trip, at all!). We started driving to Pudeto dock, at the shores of beautiful Pehoe Lake. We arrived a bit early, so I had a coffee while I waited (that’s why we suggest to bring a little cash on you.. just in case)… Once we boarded the catamaran, I couldn’t help it and went on the deck. It was a little windy and cold, but the view was totally over that feeling. The clouds disappeared while we were navigating, and from there we could see the horns. After approx 1 hour and 20´ we arrived. And began to hike towards the French Valley, along a semi steep trail that leads us to the very heart of the Paine Massif. It was sad, at the beginning, because the huge fire that affected us a few years ago, was still present… All those trees looked a little creepy but at the same time, the whole scene was so beautiful, the nature was doing its thing, regenerating as fast as it can.

Colors of Patagonia Summer

Our group was splitted into 2, as we were walking a little faster, and the rest of the trekkers wanted to take and take pictures. We had to be back before the catamaran set sail the dock, so we hiked a bit faster in order to get to Camp Italiano.

On the way up, you will see some lakes, forests, a river that grows while you hike (as you are getting closer to the French glacier). Once we got hungry, we stopped in a beautiful spot over the lake, and had a sandwich (a veggie lunch for me). It was a brief stop, as we wanted to hike as far as we could. And… once I arrived to the hanging bridge over the French river, I couldn’t believe it!

The huge French Glacier right in front of me. That moment was perfect. We I turned around, I could see almost all the km’s I have hiked so far, all the lakes behind me, unbelievable!

The Glaciers of Paine Grande

This bridge is located at the foot of the south east face of the Massif, and has fantastic views of the valley (here I realized what my colleagues were talking about when they said this was their favourite spot).

You’ll be marveled at the extensive mass of the valley's geological formations: Hoja (Blade), Máscara (Mask), Espada (Sword), Catedral (Cathedral), Aleta de Tiburón (Shark’s Fin) and the magnificent Fortaleza (Fortress).

Here we stopped for a bit at the camp Italiano, went to the bathroom, got hydrated a bit and sat over some rocks to admire this incredible place. Then, we began to descend through the same trail, an undulating terrain of mixed grassland and light forest which will take us to Refugio Paine Grande, located on the peaceful shores of Lake Pehoe.

We got on time for a deserved cold beer, while we waited for the catamaran that departed at 6:00pm to Pudeto dock.

Once we got there, our driver was waiting for us and took us back to our EcoCamp.

I t was our last night in Patagonia. ☹

We took a hot shower in our shared bathrooms, (separated by gender, of course). Had a delicious dinner, dessert and red wine. And we had the chance to go and see a glacial presentation from one of our most experienced trekking guides. He explained all the formations of this incredible remote location, it was very very interesting. After this, we stayed at our EcoBar, sharing the experiences with our new friends from all over the world. Tried the local beer, and then went back to the dome. Buenas noches!

Day 5. Sunday

Places: Torres del Paine - Puerto Natales - Punta Arenas - Santiago

We woke up early to watch the sunrise and then went to have breakfast. We had everything already packed to leave this beautiful place. After some coffees, fruit, and granola, we boarded the van and started driving towards Puerto Natales. We arrived around noon.

We grabbed a box lunch and kept driving towards Punta Arenas. The flight departed at 7:45pm. We arrived around 2.. so… we asked the driver to drop us off in Punta Arenas’s downtown. Just to explore around. What a windy city!

Here, we hiked up Cerro La Cruz, took some pics of the city and the Magellain Strait, then grabbed a coffee and took a taxi to the airport, that’s located approx 20 minutes from the “Plaza”. (cost approx US10). We checked in, and flew back to Santiago.

Some of my new friends had more time to explore, and that morning, these travellers took the bus to El Calafate (regular transportation is included in our programs, semi private transportation upgrade available too).

Extra Notes of #MyTrip

  • I must go back there, and get a better camera!
  • The length of this trip can be from 3 days and 2 nights, up to 7 days and 6 nights! We recommend a 6 days and 5 nights program , as you’re on the road on day 1 and the last day.
  • We do have more adventurous hikes in EcoCamp. check out our 5 and 7 day W Trek, and our 9 day Torres del Paine Circuit! (MultiSport programs available too)

13 Safari Eco Lodges in South Africa

  • By Emese Maczko
  • May 10, 2023 December 18, 2023

South Africa is a beautiful country and is home to stunning coastlines, pristine beaches, and wonderful scenery. However, the country is most famous for its wildlife, ethical safari tours , and the many game reserves that can be found in this area of Africa.

So, as you can imagine, there are plenty of safari eco-lodges in South Africa. This ranges from luxurious tented camps to safari bungalows, so there is something for everyone! We have researched each safari eco-lodge on this list to make sure they’re operating sustainably, and are taking the utmost care when it comes to the environment.

What are eco-lodges?

Eco-lodges are accommodations in undisturbed, remote natural areas where both construction and operation have the lowest impact possible on the environment. They are not only part of the local community, but they are active participants in protecting nature and culturally sensitive areas.

Garonga Safari Camp

A wooden house with straw bale roof, huge balcony and a pool right in front of it.

Garonga Safari Camp creates an eco-friendly safari experience for guests and continuously invests in reducing its carbon footprint. This is done through several ongoing measures, including environmental impact management, using solar energy wherever possible, and keeping track of water usage.

Located in the Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve, this safari eco-lodge offers guests the opportunity to see Africa’s big 5 in a natural environment. There are three different accommodation options on-site, including the Garonga Safari Camp, the Little Garonga Safari Lodge, and MCH Private Tented Camp. This safari lodge also has great facilities, including a sleep-out deck and a safari bush bath.

Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge

safari eco lodge santiago

Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is part of Isibindi Africa Lodges and their primary focus is to preserve the environment. Not only does the lodge have joint community ownership, but there are several sustainable measures put in place. This includes removing single-use plastics where possible, investing in solar farms, and serving ethically harvested food.

If you’re looking for luxury eco-lodges in South Africa, then this is a great choice. Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is located within Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, which is home to the Big 5 and a variety of other mammal species. Aside from the fantastic game drives, there is also an infinity pool that overlooks the African bush!

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

safari eco lodge santiago

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is one of the top luxury safari lodges in South Africa. It’s also a world leader in sustainable tourism and has been certified as carbon-negative. The Reserve has several ongoing projects, including reforestation, renewable electricity generation, poverty alleviation, and community management.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve covers an impressive, 3500 hectares of wilderness and is home to a variety of South African animals from mammals and marine life, including whales. There are three different types of accommodation at this reserve; the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, and exclusive private villas. This reserve also offers plenty of experiences, including a coastal safari, whale watching, and shark cage diving.

Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve

Small suites inside rock formations. Only the windows are visible.

Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is fully invested in its ‘green initiative’. A Solar Photovoltaic hybrid energy system has been installed at the nature reserve, which provides eco-friendly power to the whole eco-resort . The reserve also has plenty of water initiatives in place and works closely with the community, as around 60% of its staff are local.

If you’re searching for eco-lodges on the Western Cape, then Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is a great choice. They have a variety of accommodation options available, including suites, chalets, self-catering units, and camping. There are also plenty of activities available at this reserve, including game drives, Sundowner tours, and quad bike adventures.

Leshiba Mountain Retreats

The accommodation options include the Venda Art Lodge, Hamasha Bush Camp, the Farmhouse, and Luvhondo Bush Camp. Not only does this eco-lodge offer game drives, but you can also go on guided hikes, and day excursions, and visit the Spacegate rock formation.

Sibuya Game Reserve

A large community room with armchairs and lounges with a palm leaves roof and open, no windows

Sibuya is one of the unique safari lodges in South Africa and prides itself on ecotourism. There are two eco-camps on-site, and both are primarily run on solar power, with no allowance for WiFi or air conditioning. Sibuya also runs the wilderness experience, which is an eco-volunteering program. This gives volunteers the chance to get involved with conservation work and community engagement projects.

Sibuya Game Reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including the big 5 ! You’ll also go on a 45-minute boat trip to get to the accommodation, and you could spot turtles, dolphins, and whales from the river mouth.

Isibindi Africa Lodges also have several conservation programs in place.

Thonga Beach Lodge is one of the more unique safari lodges in South Africa, as they have an open ocean experience that focuses on ‘marine safaris’ rather than game drives. This lodge also offers scuba diving, turtle tracking, guided forest walks, and excursions to Lake Sibaya.

Six Sustainable Safari Lodges in Africa

Over the past few years, we have noticed a clear move towards more sustainable, earth-friendly travel and ecotourism. Travellers are now wanting to know that their experiences while travelling, are responsible and beneficial to the earth and communities surrounding the reserves they visit. Ecotourism is all about ‘travelling lightly’ and ensuring that you have a positive impact on all of the wonderful places that you’re visiting. The safari industry definitely has a good reputation for gaining momentum when it comes to lodges making their practices more sustainable, responsible and eco-friendly.

When planning your next Escape, there are certain indications that you can look out for that will help you determine how sustainable a destination is. Firstly, their operation should directly benefit the local communities surrounding them. This can be in the form of creating jobs and upskilling local people, leasing land from a community or contributing to education and well-being in the neighbouring areas. Secondly, there should be an effort to use local produce and the exchange should be equitable and sustainable. Many eco-tourism lodges will have their own vegetable gardens or buy their fresh produce from a local supplier, therefore reducing the carbon cost of transporting products. Lastly, there should be some form of sustainability effort in and around the lodge, this can be anything from solar energy to refusing to use plastic on site.

Escape Safari Co highlights five lodges in Africa that continue to improve their operational choices in the hopes of creating a more sustainable future.

Tswalu Kalahari

Tswalu is an important and continuous conservation project. It is a reserve that is focused on restoring the Kalahari ecosystem to its natural state and is always searching for ways to achieve this. Tswalu is also home to the Kalahari Endangered Ecosystems Project (KEEP), a research unit that is focused on assessing the impact of climate change in the region and how this has affected the fauna and flora. some of the research with KEEP looks at the effects of climate change on how species respond and interact with each other in complex food webs. For example, reduced overall rainfall on the reserve results in less grass, which results in a reduced abundance of harvester termites, which has a knock-on effect for aardvarks.

There are always research projects on the go and these include research on pangolin, brown hyena, pygmy falcons, white-browed sparrow weavers, to name a few.

safari eco lodge santiago

Kwitonda lodge

Set of the edge of volcanoes national park in Rwanda you will find a uniquely beautiful lodge that contributes to sustainable operations on all levels. Within the dramatic setting of the forests, guests have the privilege of experiencing gorilla encounters and golden monkey encounters.

The design elements of the lodge include "woven ceilings and hand-fired terracotta brickwork crafted by local artisans". There is also an onsite plant nursery and vegetable garden which provides the freshest produce to the lodge and staff while creating additional access to income, a more sustainable supply chain and enhancing the guest experience.

safari eco lodge santiago

andBeyond Phinda

Phinda has been at the forefront of conservation for nearly 30 years and was a pioneering reserve in eco-tourism. The land has been reclaimed from old livestock and pineapple farms, which have recovered dramatically through successful land management over the past 3 decades. Phinda is home to 6 stunning lodges and some of the most diverse habitats in the country.

Phinda has always been involved with conservation work spanning across most mammals and their team of dedicated researchers and habitat professionals sure this ecosystem is operating at an optimum level. They have been instrumental in large scale mammal relocations, home to projects such as the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project and are a critical source for growing a sustainable, genetically diverse cheetah population which is often used to populate other reserves around Southern Africa.

safari eco lodge santiago

Serra Cafema

The land on which Serra Cafema has been built is leased from the 300 000-hectare Marienfluss Conservancy in Namibia which is owned primarily by the Himba people, who are amongst the last semi-nomadic peoples on the planet.

Serra Cafema falls within the Wilderness Safaris portfolio which is affiliated with Wilderness Wildlife Trust, Children of the Wilderness and Lion Recover Fund. Contributions from guests stays at Serra Cafema and other Wilderness Lodges will go towards research and conservation, community empowerment and education and anti-poaching and management.

safari eco lodge santiago

Londolozi is a family-run lodge in the Sabi Sands that continues to include and improve conservation and sustainable practices in the lodge operations, staff education and community upliftment. Previously a cattle farm and then a hunting reserve, Londolozi became the first Relais & Chateaux safari lodge in Africa and continues to grow and adapt to have a more positive impact on the earth.

Solar panels have recently been installed at the lodge and a substantial portion of the electricity that is used on site is from the solar farm. There are also vegetable gardens around the staff village that grow the highest quality fresh produce, which is used in the camps kitchen, each of the gardens is owned by a staff member, which creates another source of income and supports micro-businesses.

safari eco lodge santiago

Marataba Conservation Camps are found within the Marataba Contractual Park, a 4-hour journey from Johannesburg. Here, conservation is at the forefront of their daily lives with ongoing conservation work constantly happening on the reserve. It is a true example of how land management and conservation go hand in hand.

Marataba is a model where guides put conservation at the forefront, whilst still including the flexibility and fun of a traditional safari experience. Guests are encouraged to actively participate in some of these pioneering projects which could include elephant and predator management, ecological interventions like veld condition surveys or participate in the Rhino Conservation Safaris.

The Rhino Conservation Safari was developed to get guests actively involved in the protection and monitoring of the key rhino population that exists on Marataba. In order to safeguard them from poaching various tools are used including ear notching, DNA micro-chipping of horns and body and fitment of artificially intelligent ankle bracelets, which monitor their movement and behaviour.

Impressie van de eilanden

safari eco lodge santiago

Afwisseling is verzekerd.

safari eco lodge santiago

In Afrikaanse sferen

safari eco lodge santiago

Fotogeniek Cidade Velha

Cultuurliefhebbers opgelet!

safari eco lodge santiago

Ready, set, go!

Touren over Fogo

safari eco lodge santiago

Zin in iets actiefs?

safari eco lodge santiago

eco friendly safari lodges

Top 10 Eco-friendly safari lodges

Eco-tourism is all about travelling lightly, leaving no heavy footprints on the terrain you’re exploring, and staying in safari lodges that are serious about the environment, the wildlife and the communities that surround them. Exasperated by these green-washers, safari veterans Colin Bell and David Bristow set about finding the true heroes of eco-tourism across the continent. The result? Africa’s Finest , a green bible that pays homage to the eco-friendly safari lodges who truly are setting the standard for responsible and sustainable travel. We’ve listed our top 10 for you here: the only heavy footprints at these eco-friendly safari lodges are those left by the resident elephant plodding past…

eco-friendly safari lodges

1. Campi ya Kanzi, Kenya

Campi ya Kanzi could certainly teach some safari lodges a thing or two about community development. Along with the camp, owner Luca Belpietro and his wife established the Maasai Community Wilderness Trust to help take care of the thousands of Maasai landowners living in the area. Today, the trust has its own primary school with 50 teachers, a medical dispensary, and three health clinics. Landowners are also compensated for the loss of any livestock (by a lion attack or other), in return for full predator protection within the ranch. And that’s just the beginning at this extraordinary eco-friendly lodge…

2. Gibb’s Farm, Tanzania

The best bit about Gibb’s Farm is the fabulously-named ‘fundiland’ , where every single waste material from the safari lodge goes to be reused, recycled and made into something beautiful. There are carpenters crafting scrap wood into handsome statues, tailors threading leftover materials into cushion covers, and (our favourite), the paper fundi , who mixes waster paper with elephant dung and turns it into a range of stationary and cards to be sold in the shop. Creative and one of our favourite eco-friendly safari lodges! We love it!

safari eco lodge santiago

3. Meno a Kwena, Botswana

At the heart of Meno a Kwena is a commitment to the environment and people surrounding it. Since its inception in 2003, the team have vastly reduced human-wildlife conflict along the Boteti River (as important to villagers looking for water as it is to animals). For the local communities, a direct income was created through the leasing of the land, and employment and training opportunities provide at the lodge itself. Truly, a camp for travellers of an eco-friendly, sustainable mind.

safari eco lodge santiago

4. Singita Pamushana , Zimbabwe

In the south-eastern corner of Zimbabwe, there’s a reserve called Malilangwe, and in the heart of that reserve is the exquisite Singita Pamushana safari lodge. So, why did Colin and David choose Pamushana for their list? Because this one small lodge provides almost the sole employment, educational, health and general social opportunities for every single community in the area, as well as feeding 23,000 school children daily. Simply incredible.

safari eco lodge santiago

5. Garonga Safari Camp, South Africa

In 2009, Garonga owner Bernie Smith decided it was time to give the safari lodge a total environmental overhaul. Today, the sewerage system is a six-phase filtration extravaganza that makes waste water safe for surrounding animals to drink. For guests, the Vivreau Water System produces chilled, filtered water, the camp garden supplies a third of all Garonga’s food needs (and even that’s enriched by organic chicken litter!), and game drive vehicles are run on a clean, happy bio-fuel. That’s what we call an eco-friendly claim to fame!

safari eco lodge santiago

6. Sindabezi Island, Zambia

Impossibly romantic and timelessly beautiful, Sindabezi is certainly on our list of most eco-friendly safari lodges. There’s not a single kilowatt of electricity on the island, everything (and we mean everything) running instead from solar power. Wet waste is turned into compost for the juicy tomatoes and marrows in the veggie garden, and non-biodegradable waste is sent to the mainland for disposal. Oh, and the whole camp was constructed using sustainable wood from local sources. When can we visit?

safari eco lodge santiago

7. Serra Cafema, Namibia

At Serra Cafema in Namibia’s stark but hauntingly beautiful Kaokaland, the land is leased from the local Himba people , and you’ll see their livestock grazing peacefully between the oryx and the gemsbok. Pretty much all the staff have been recruited from the local village, and management training is in progress. What do Colin and David say? “The hope is that this venture into ecotourism will give the Himba a firm foothold in the modern world, without them having to give up their cultural identity.” We couldn’t agree more.

safari eco lodge santiago

8. Mwaleshi Camp, Zambia

In a place as absurdly remote as Zambia’s North Luangwa , it would be all too easy for safari lodges to turn to diesel-fuelled generators and sturdy, cement buildings. But not at Mwaleshi Camp. The camp is crafted each year by local artisans, using only the most local of materials – there’s not a nail or wire in sight. Floors are polished mud and roofs, thatched palm leaves, and the camp only uses solar power. There aren’t even any vehicles around either, with walking being the only activity on offer.

safari eco lodge santiago

9. Chada Katavi, Tanzania

Located deep in the heart of the enchanting Katavi National Park, the folks at Chada have no real reason to engage with anyone else. But boy they do. On the outskirts of the park, in Kibaoni Village, they helped establish a youth centre and an environmental library to ensure that young minds understand the benefits of the magnificent wildlife area they live in. After all, if there’s one thing safari lodges across the continent must do, it’s inspire the next generation of conservationists, guides, and biologists…

safari eco lodge santiago

10. Mumbo Island Camp, Malawi

Situated on a rocky outcrop on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi , guests can get away from it all and live off the grid for a few nights in this watery retreat. Mumbo successfully succeeded at making as little of an environmental impact as possible in order to maintain the pristine nature of the island. There is no electricity, so lighting is by solar, paraffin lamps and wind-up torches. Toilets are dry composter loos and all composted material is removed from the island, buried in pits for a year and then used as great compost on their gardens on the mainland.
