San Diego cruise port

Region West Coast USA and Canada

Local Time 2024-07-02 15:57

Port San Diego cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from San Diego, California. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port San Diego is located in Southern California and on San Diego Bay. The port city was founded in 1542 by Spanish conquistadors. San Diego is approx 120 mi (190 km / 2-hours drive) from Los Angeles (direction south) and approx 350 mi (560 km / 5-hours drive) from Las Vegas.

As cruise port, San Diego CA is a major departure port / homeport for turnaround operations (roundtrip itineraries). The Port's cruise ship schedule offers convenient departures to ports in Hawaii, Mexico's Riviera and California coastal cities. The most popular itinerary from San Diego is the 7-day "Mexican Riviera Cruise" visiting Mazatlan , Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . Longer voyages go to South America or the South Pacific (Australia-New Zealand).

San Diego Bay (where the cruise port is located) features a coastline with numerous luxury hotels. The Port alone is the landlord for 17 hotels at the waterfront. Here are still operational 3x shipyards - NASSCO (National Steel and Shipbuilding Company), Huntington Ingalls (Continental Maritime) and BAE Systems (Southwest Marine). NASSCO is West Coast USA's largest shipbuilding yard. It specializes in building auxiliary and support vessels (for the US Navy), as well as oil tankers and dry-bulk cargo carriers.

Currently, by annual cruise berthings, San Diego is ranked California's 3rd-busiest cruise port - after Long Beach and Los Angeles .

Port San Diego CA

Port San Diego (locode USSAN) was established in 1962 as a public-benefit corporation. As cargo port, it is currently ranked one of USA's top 30 containership ports, with annual cargo shipping volume of ~3 million tons. For FY2017 (fiscal year), the Port reported USD 9,4 billion impact to California's economy. Its business supports 44300+ local jobs (shipbuilding, cargo operations, tourism, hospitality).

The Port's largest/main terminals are 10th Avenue Marine Terminal and National City Marine Terminal.

  • 10th Avenue Marine Terminal covers an area of 96 acres (39 ha) and has 8x multi-purpose berths. The imported cargoes include refrigerated food, fertilizer, cement, break bulk cargoes, forest products. There is a large, on-dock cold storage warehouse (sized 300,000 ft2 / 28,000 m2) used for storing perishables (including fresh produce).
  • National City Marine Terminal (operated by The Pasha Group) covers an area of 125 acres (51 ha) and has 7x berths. Annually, here are handled 450,000+ vehicles. The terminal serves as primary port for imported cars (Honda, Acura, Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hino Motors, VW).

San Diego is the primary port for imported vehicles (Fiat, Audi, VW, Honda, Mazda, Acura, Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi). The seaport holds a lease with Dole Food Company (importing much of the USA's bananas).

San Diego Bay waterfront's most visited tourist attraction is the Maritime Museum. The 1948-opened museum has one of the USA's largest collections of historic ships, featuring the Star of India (1863-built iron-hulled sailing ship), San Salvador (100-ft/30-m long full-rigged galleon, replica of the flagship of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo/1497-1543), HMS Surprise (3-masted sailship, 1970-built as replica of HMS Rose/1757-launched 20-gun/6th-rate post ship of the British Royal Navy) and Berkeley (1898-built ferryboat that served San Francisco Bay crossings between West Oakland and San Francisco ). On Berkeley is also the MacMullen Library & Research Archives.

In April 2023, San Diego's Maritime Museum announced a plan to redevelop the North Embarcadero premises to include galleries, a store, an educational theater, a cafe bar, roof-top terraces, as well as public and administrative offices. The US$28 million project also includes reconfiguration of the dock/moorings.

San Diego cruise port is located downtown (North Embarcadero). Its main passenger terminal facility (B Street Pier) has 3 berths. The historic Broadway Pier was redeveloped (inaugurated in December 2010) as the second cruise terminal. The list of largest cruise shipping companies homeporting vessels here includes HAL-Holland America Line , Celebrity , DCL-Disney , RCI-Royal Caribbean , NCL-Norwegian , Carnival , Princess , Silversea . Each San Diego roundtrip voyage results in an average USD 2 million in economic impact to California.

Most cruises leaving from San Diego are to Mexico. In early April and early November are also offered Panama Canal repositioning cruises. The port is often included in around-the-world voyages offered by companies like Costa , Oceania , Phoenix Reisen .

In the period 2002-2006, the cruise port reported a 44% growth in ship calls - from 122 (in 2002) to 219 (in 2006). In that period, the passenger numbers jumped from 276,000 to 619,000. In 2008, the port reported a record year with handled 252 cruise ship calls and over 800,000 passengers. In 2007, this business declined due to slumping US economy and the violence in Mexico.

In May 2013, the port was visited by its largest so far cruise ship - Celebrity Solstice . In 2016, the cruise port reported a 50% increase in ship calls. The growth was largely based on turnaround operations by Holland America and Disney ships.

Port San Diego reported a total of 69 ship calls during season 2015-2016 and scheduled 83 calls in 2017-2018. The increase in passengers was from 198,000 (season 2015-2016) to over 242,000 (2017-2018). The increased passenger shipping traffic was mainly due to Mexican Riviera itineraries. Previous cruise port statistics show 200 ship calls (season 2009-2010) and a drop to 79 calls (2012-2013).

In 2017, Disney Wonder had scheduled 13 San Diego departures. Princess ships visit the port on round-trip Mexican Riviera itineraries leaving out of Los Angeles . HAL-Holland America Line also cruises to Mexico Riviera ports, as well as Panama Canal transition and Mexico-Hawaii cruises leaving out of San Diego and visiting Ensenada (Baja California) . For season 2019-2020, HAL homeported here a small fleet of 3 liners ( Oosterdam , Eurodam , Maasdam ) for 7-day Mexican Riviera itineraries visiting Puerto Vallarta , Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan .

For season 2018-2019, the port handled 92 ship calls (83 calls in 2017) and ~242,000 passengers (8% increase over 2017). The projected growth in cruise passenger numbers is 5-8% a year - to 280,000 by 2020. In 2019, Walt Disney expanded its San Diego homeporting season to 2 months. Also in 2019, the seaport celebrates its 250th anniversary.

For season 2019-2020, the cruise port had scheduled (berth bookings) 104 ship calls with expected ~338,000 passengers (295,000 more than 2018-19). Season's highlight is the return of Carnival Cruise Lines (last homeporting here in 2011) with Carnival Miracle (beginning December 1, 2019) for 12 roundtrips. Carnival's planned itineraries included 7-day Mexican Riviera; 14-15-day Hawaiian Islands, 3-4-5-6-day Baja Mexico.

In 2020, the Port opened a second shore-to-ship power connection . Using power supply from the city's power grid, shore power reduces bad emissions from vessels while berthed in port.

  • After 2020, cruise companies with more than 5 ship calls in California are required to plug-in (use shoreside power supply) for 80% of the calls. The mark before 2020 was 70%.
  • In April 2021 was announced a USD 4,6 million investment (equipment, installation, construction) to double the shore-power capability at the terminals "B Street Pier" and "Broadway Pier". In January 2022, for the project (completed in August 2022) were contracted Cochrane Marine LLC (to buy equipment, also for construction management, testing, coordinating, commissioning) and Baker Electric Inc (to install the new electrical equipment and to replace/terminate the medium voltage cables).
  • Now, at both terminals, two vessels can be plugged in simultaneously. The first two ships that simultaneously used the expanded shore-power facility (on January 13, 2023) were Disney Wonder and Oceania Insignia .
  • In December 2023 was planned a third shore power plug/point (at B Street Terminal's south berth) to be operational in 2024.

CCL-Carnival stopped homeporting here in 2012. Carnival Elation was the first homeported year-round in San Diego (between 2007-2010), followed by Carnival Spirit (2011-2012, then relocated to Australia). Starting December 1, 2019, here was homeported Carnival Miracle (previously deployed in Tampa FL ) for a 3-month season to Hawaii (14-15-day) and Mexico (5-7-day).

In late-July 2020, Port San Diego was approved by CBP (US Customs and Border Protection) to activate an FTZ (Foreign Trade Zone) at TAMT (10th Avenue Marine Terminal / 96-acres / 39-hectares site). The FTZ offers as business benefits duty reduction (in merchandise processing fees), deferral (flow savings until cargoes are imported/exported), logistical, cost savings. At the FTZ, equipment manufacturers can assemble components to create USA-made products, thus obtaining additional savings (duty drawbacks). As of 2020, San Diego County has 19x FTZx (mainly warehouses). The seaport has two cargo terminals - TAMT and NCMT (National City Marine Terminal) - both benefiting from the deep-water and well-protected harbor.

Due to the global Coronavirus crisis, in 2020 Port San Diego lost 49 cruise ship calls (~174,000 tourists) or ~40% of 2020-2021 (September-May) season's planned 137 calls (expected ~450,000 tourists). The canceled 49 calls (12x by Disney and 17x by Holland America) resulted in ~USD 79M loss of revenues.

On September 29, 2020, Port San Diego completed the USD 24 million project for the modernization of 10th Avenue Marine Terminal. Partially, the TIGER project ("Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery" ) was funded by US Department of Transportation (USD 10 M). Works included removing two obsolete warehouses (redeveloping their area with project cargo handling facilities), improving dock rails, and installing new lighting and pavement. Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal serves mainly RoRo vessels (vehicle carriers) , break-bulk cargo carriers (military equipment, wind energy equipment, shipbuilding steel), boxships (reefers/refrigerated TEU-containers with fresh import produce), dry-bulk cargo carriers (soda ash, aggregate, cement / used in construction projects).

Season 2022-2023 became the cruise port's busiest (since 2009-2010) with 140 booked berthings (+45% over 2021-22) and estimated ~460,000 tourists. In season 2022-23, Disney doubled its homeporting operations (from 16-24 to 51), while Princess booked 13 berthings and for the first time started homeporting in/roundtrips from San Diego.

Season 2023-2024 comprised 100 ship calls and ~338,000 passengers.

San Diego cruise terminal

San Diego cruise terminals are very close to downtown, both located at B Street Pier (at 1140 Harbor Drive). The Airport is just 5 mi (8 km) from the cruise port.

The “first green building” or the Port Pavilion at Broadway Pier also has a terminal.

It is used if more than 4 vessels are in port or if the "B Street" Terminal is not operational (generally due to maintenance works).

Both San Diego cruise port terminals offer a wide range of passenger-use facilities. Parking fees are USD 10–20 daily (Port Authority subject to change). Both facilities offer easy access to downtown attractions like the Maritime Museum, Midway Museum, several waterfront hotels and restaurants. How to Get to the Cruise Port of San Diego

I have sailed many times from the San Diego Cruise Terminal and one of the main things that I liked about it is its easily accessible by air, car, and even train.

You can read about my Disney Cruise From San Diego.

Whilst San Pedro and Long Beach in Los Angeles offer even more options for cruises, San Diego is much more easily accessible, in addition to being a wonderful place to stay if you want to add a night or two before or after your cruise.

San Diego Cruise Port terminal is located close to the heart of the downtown area on the beautiful San Diego Bay.

The San Diego Cruise port address is B Street Pier 1140 N Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101.

The port is only 2.4 miles away from the San Diego Airport.

It’s too far to walk to the Port from here, particularly if you have luggage.

However, the car ride will only take about 10 minutes from San Diego Airport to the Cruise Port.

There are a number of options for shuttles from the cruise port.

However, we think that if you are arriving at the airport and just want to get to the port, a ride-sharing service is a much better idea.

An Uber will only cost around $10 to $12.

Lyft will be slightly less at around $8.

The most expensive option from the Airport to the Port will be a taxi which will cost in the region of $20.

There is public transport from the airport to the cruise port. This is just $2.25 per person each way.

The bus you need is the 992 which runs from the airport to downtown via the cruise port.

Arriving by train is another option.

The Amtrak Train Station is just a few blocks from the cruise port. You can easily walk unless you have a lot of luggage.

San Diego Cruise Port Hotels

Where is there to stay in San Diego that is convenient to the cruise terminal?

As you would expect, there are many fabulous hotels in San Diego.

As the cruise port is right in the heart of San Diego downtown you have a lot of hotel options that are very close to the start of your cruise.

However, there are only a handful of hotels that have cruise and park packages.

If you are arriving by plane or train there are many great options that are suitable for a range of budgets. Bringing your own car and needing cruise parking complicates this a bit.

You can either choose one of the few hotels which offer a San Diego cruise port park and stay package.

Or you can stay in a different hotel and use an independent car parking option.

This will most likely be more expensive than a San Diego cruise and stay package. However, it will give you more options.

Here we have split up the choices of hotels with cruise parking packages and those without.

Then we will also explore parking-only options so you can work out what the best solution is for you and your family.

San Diego Cruise and Stay Hotels

There is a limited selection of hotels in San Diego that offers a cruise and stay parking package.

Here are the best options for you.

Wyndham San Diego Bayside

Wyndham San Diego Bayside

If you want a hotel close to the cruise port you really can’t get any closer than the Wyndham San Diego Bayside. It is right across the street from the B Street Pier.

Not only does the close proximity to the port mean you have just a short walk in the morning to your cruise. It also means you will be able to wake up and look out the window and see your cruise ship right there!

This is an older hotel, but it has been recently renovated.

Rooms are a decent size and have either a King or two Doubles. The hotel does not have its own restaurant. However. there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance.

Note that if you do not opt for a cruise parking package, the standard rate is $39 per night.

This is pretty standard for the location, However, you really don’t want to find that out when you arrive.

If you are going to park at the Wyndham and then go on a cruise, definitely get the cruise parking package.

Comfort Inn San Diego At The Harbor

norwegian cruise port san diego

The Comfort Inn San Diego At The Harbor is another great option if you are taking a cruise out of San Diego. It is further out from the port than the Wyndham but often offers lower pricing so is worth considering.

The Comfort Inn is around 4 miles from the port. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the cruise port.

It is a motel-style hotel with outside corridors. The rooms offer either one king bed or one Double. There is a decent breakfast which is included in your room rate.

If you are looking for a clean motel for a one-night stay before your cruise this is a good option. The rates usually can’t be beaten, particularly if you are bringing a car and want to park whilst on the cruise.

Embassy Suites Hotel San Diego Bay

norwegian cruise port san diego

Embassy Suites is always one of my favorite picks. And I have stayed in this one recently and it impressed me very much.

What really impressed me about this particular San Diego Embassy Suites is that the staff were exceptional. I definitely have this hotel on the top of my list when I am sailing out of San Diego or just want to spend a night or two in the City.

They are consistent of a high standard and are a great option for families as you can accommodate more than 4 people in a room comfortably.

The breakfasts are always good and are included in the room rate.

All rooms are described as suites. What this means is that you will have two rooms. One with either a King or two Doubles.

The other room has a sofa bed, television, refrigerator, and microwave.

You can’t cook a gourmet meal but you can prepare something for your family to save a bunch on a restaurant meal if you want to.

Embassy Suites also offers a great complimentary breakfast.

We have stayed at many Embassy Suites and have always found this to be of really good quality with a decent selection of both cooked and cold breakfast food options.

Embassy Suites San Diego also offers an Evening Reception with hot and cold food items and beverages including beer and wine. If you have a family these included food options can save you a lot of money.

The Westin San Diego

The Westin San Diego

The Westin has an amazing downtown location which is also just a short ride to the cruise port.

If you are looking for all the high-standard features that a Westin offers, you will be sure to enjoy staying at this imposing San Diego Bay hotel.

You are within easy walking distance of Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter. The views of the San Diego Bay from the Westin are stunning.

Make sure to factor in the resort fee and valet parking fee.

The Westin does not have a cruise and park package option. It doesn’t have any special packages for San Diego cruise passengers. However, it is a fabulous hotel that is very convenient for seeing all the sights of San Diego.

San Diego Cruise Parking

If you do not need a hotel for your cruise but are bringing your car, there are a number of San Diego Cruise Parking options.

San Diego Cruise Port is rather unusual because it does not have a dedicated parking lot. Therefore you have to do a bit of research to find out what the best parking options are when you sail on a cruise out of San Diego.

sandiegocruiseport

Many of the parking options are advertised as airport parking. The Cruise Port and the Airport are not too far away from each other. Some options have a shuttle to the cruise port, but not all do.

So be careful to factor this in if you are booking one which is not within walking distance, as most aren’t.

Wally Park is located approximately a 10-minute shuttle ride from the port.

norwegian cruise port san diego

Aladdin Parking is bookable through Park Sleep Fly and is close to both the airport and cruise port. This is a more pricey option at $16 per day. However, this is for covered car parking.

This is very reasonably priced and located right opposite the San Diego Cruise Port. However, this gets booked up really quickly, so make sure you check this one out far in advance.

Cruises Out Of San Diego

San Diego cruise port is mostly used by Holland American and Disney cruise lines.

Celebrity and Royal Caribbean Cruise lines also have some ships sailing out of San Diego. These are usually repositioning cruises that sail through the Panama Canal.

Hurricane Beryl: Here’s the Potential Impact on Cruises

Update (12:45 p.m., July 1): We have updated the article below to reflect the latest information regarding changes to cruises for Carnival Horizon and Carnival Liberty.

Hurricane season is off to an early start, with Hurricane Beryl forming and rapidly intensifying to the earliest category 4 Atlantic hurricane on record.

Currently sitting about 500 miles southeast of Puerto Rico, the storm is battering the Lesser Antilles as it makes its way into the Caribbean Sea.

Beryl is generating maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour . If there is good news, forecasts are for the storm to weaken from here, hopefully reducing its impact and potential damage.

For cruise passengers on vacation in the Caribbean, however, there are already impacts being felt in the form of itinerary changes, with more likely in the coming days.

Forecast models are in agreement that the storm’s track will take it through the middle of the Caribbean, on a beeline that will take it near Jamaica and then into the Yucatan Peninsula. As a result, a number of busy cruise ports, including Ocho Rios and Falmouth (Jamaica), Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel are all in the possible path or could see the impacts.

So what changes are being seen already?

Itinerary Changes to Cruises

Norwegian Jade in port

So far, we have heard news of a number of itinerary updates in order to keep ships clear of the impending storm. Here’s what we know so far:

Norwegian Jade: Adjusted itinerary from Falmouth, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel to San Juan, Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and Puerto Plata for the June 30 sailing. Source: Reddit

Celebrity Beyond: Adjusted itinerary from Bonaire, Curacao, and Aruba to Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire (swapping the order of Aruba and Bonaire) for the June 29 sailing. Source: Reddit

Harmony of the Seas: Adjusted itinerary from Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel to remove Roatan (now an extra day at sea) and swapped the order of Cozumel and Costa Maya for the June 30 sailing. Source: Facebook

Icon of the Seas: Reportedly adjusted schedule from St Maarten, St Thomas, and CocoCay to Cozumel, Costa Maya, and CocoCay for the June 29 sailing. Source: Facebook

Carnival Horizon: Adjusted itinerary to cancel a visit to Grand Cayman for the June 30 sailing. Source: Carnival

Carnival Liberty: Adjusted schedule to visit Cozumel on July 2. Now July 5 will be a day at sea. Source: Carnival

That said, there are a number of ships scheduled for the ports in the area that we haven’t heard exactly what changes (if any) will be made.

Potentially Impacted Ships & Sailings

We’ve looked at the port schedules for the coming week and identified a number of sailings that could be impacted. However, at this time we have not heard word that changes have been made to the sailings listed below.

In addition, we’ve contacted both Carnival and Royal Caribbean and asked to be alerted to any updates. Keep in mind that just because a ship is listed here does not mean it will definitely be affected by the storm.

Note: As of this original article (11:00 a.m., July 1), a Carnival representative told us they don’t “have any updates at the moment” but will let us know of any changes. (Carnival has now shared updates to the schedules for Horizon and Liberty, listed above.)

If you are sailing on a trip to the area, remember that your cruise line will be in touch with the latest updates.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

T hinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You'll find Norwegian ships everywhere from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Baltimore; Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; Galveston, Texas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

Some of Norwegian's most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian's Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn't said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian's Europe voyages range widely in length from just four nights to a whopping 19 nights (for a repositioning cruise itinerary that begins in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and ends in the European city of Lisbon).

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that focus solely on European stops is a one-way trips between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Oslo, Norway, that includes a wide range of stops in Greenland, Iceland, Denmark's Faroe Islands and Norway.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England's Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Trieste (near Venice) in Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece; and Istanbul.

Norwegian isn't the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , two brands that are sister lines to each other and control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from April to late October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian's biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 10-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 3,958-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,330-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 1,972-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but most of its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company (Norwegian still is marketing two unusual one-way voyages to Alaska on Norwegian Spirit that will take place at the start of the 2024 season — the first a 16-night trip to Alaska that starts in Honolulu on April 22 and ends in Vancouver; the second an 18-night trip that starts May 8 in Vancouver and ends in Tokyo).

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night "cruisetours."

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included "Caribbean" in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,195-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Related: I've sailed on nearly every Norwegian ship. Here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line's Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian's seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line's Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of Baltimore, Galveston, New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama, and La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian's Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian's Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian's 2,150-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Related: The 8 classes of Norwegian ships, explained

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest ships, the 3,782-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line's 2,344-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line's 3,903-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024 that include stops in the Caribbean (something that is relatively rare), and the 3,903-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line's relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian's Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you'll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.

Sun princess: the best dining, amenities and more on princess cruises' newest ship.

Sun Princess features an updated layout, delicious new restaurants and plenty of spaces to be entertained.

Sun Princess Review

Key Takeaways

  • Sun Princess' fresher, more modern design may appeal to a younger crowd than the line normally caters to.
  • Incredible dining options abound, including The Catch by Rudi and the new Spellbound dinner and magic show.
  • New Cabana Mini-Suites feature indoor-outdoor cabana areas and spacious balconies.

As a travel writer who cruises with all the major lines, I was excited to travel through the Mediterranean on the new Sun Princess cruise ship in May 2024. I traveled with my mother to celebrate her 76th birthday shortly after the new ship's February debut in Rome . The itinerary we sailed was a unique, one-way offering that departed from Athens, Greece , with visits to ports like Bar, Montenegro; Corfu, Greece; and Messina and Naples, Italy .

A true marvel of modern engineering and ship architecture, Sun Princess boasts a maximum guest capacity of 4,300 and room for 1,600 crew. The Sphere-Class vessel is 1,133 feet long and 200 feet high, with a breadth of 139 feet and 21 total decks. There are 2,157 staterooms, including 80 unique suites with extra space for guests.

Standout features include a three-floor main dining area, the Princess Arena with capacity for 990 guests and a 250-person entertainment space known as The Dome. Read on to learn everything there is to know about the Sun Princess cruise ship, including my own take on the dining and entertainment options available to cruisers.

Sun Princess itineraries for 2024 and 2025

Sun Princess.

Holly Johnson

While Sun Princess is scheduled to cruise the Mediterranean through September 2024, the ship will cross the Atlantic on its way to Fort Lauderdale, Florida , by October for the winter cruise season.

From this new homeport, Sun Princess will offer seven-day Caribbean cruises with the stops in Honduras, Belize , Mexico, the Bahamas , the Dominican Republic, and Turks & Caicos through March 2025.

Sun Princess will then embark on a 14-day Spanish Passage voyage in March 2025, which ends in Barcelona, Spain , and repositions the ship for its summer in the Mediterranean. At that point, cruisers can book a range of lengthy Mediterranean options over various dates, which include stops in Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Italy, France, Spain and more.

Who should sail on Sun Princess?

Sun Princess.

While most people may think of Princess Cruises as a cruise line for baby boomers, Sun Princess aims to attract a younger, livelier crowd. This is immediately apparent when walking around the ship's common areas; Sun Princess boasts bold color schemes, endless windows, sparkling lights and a more modern central piazza than other Princess ships.

While my Mediterranean sailing largely consisted of adult travelers, Sun Princess will likely attract more families on its Caribbean itineraries. The ship's layout is ideal for parents with children of all ages, and amenities geared specifically toward kids abound. It all starts with the ship's Park19 family area, which features a huge climbing structure, a splash zone, a recreational court, a jogging court and more. Sun Princess also has three dedicated youth clubs: Firefly Park Kids Club (ages 3 to 7, with a separate play area for babies and toddlers 6 months and older), Neon Grove Tweens Club (ages 8 to 12) and The Underground Teen Lounge (ages 13 to 17).

What's interesting about Sun Princess is that it still has so much to offer more mature travelers, including couples who want to enjoy a romantic, upscale vacation. This is shown in the ship's elevated dining venues, expansive casino and luxurious spa. Sun Princess also offers the Sanctuary Collection of rooms and suites, which offer more amenities and spaces to relax on the ship.

Travelers who book a room in the Sanctuary Collection get their pick of a nicer selection of rooms, a premium beverage package, access to a private restaurant and pool deck and a more personalized experience overall. Think of the Sanctuary Collection suites as an alternative to MSC Cruises Yacht Club cabins – the biggest difference being that the venues available to cruisers in these cabins are spread throughout the ship.

The stateroom

Sun Princess.

I stayed in one of the new Cabana Mini-Suites on the Sun Princess, which I would book again in a heartbeat. These rooms are a take on the classic balcony cabin most cruisers expect, but with a twist. In addition to an outdoor balcony, Cabana Mini-Suites have a separate indoor-outdoor cabana-like area with a flat-screen television.

This extra space means the new Cabana Mini-Suites are much longer from one end to the other than a traditional balcony stateroom. The additional space is nice to have whether you want more room for storage or a separate place to read or relax while your cabinmate naps. My mom sat in our cabana area and read several times while I showered and got ready for dinner, and she even took a nap out there while I worked on my computer in our stateroom.

Regardless of the stateroom you book, know that Sun Princess cabins feature soft, neutral tones and plenty of closet space. Power outlets are abundant, and there are all kinds of nooks and crannies for storage. Cabin types on Sun Princess include the following:

Interior Cabins (136 to 145 square feet)

Basic interior rooms offer a queen bed or two small twin beds, a flat-panel television, a refrigerator, and a private bathroom with a shower. These are the most affordable cabins on the ship, and they work best for guests who just want a place to relax and sleep.

Premium Oceanview (212 square feet)

Ocean-view cabins have slightly more space than interior rooms, but they still lack a balcony. These rooms feature a queen bed or two twin configurations, a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Deluxe Balcony (235 square feet, including balcony)

Balcony cabins offer more space than ocean-view rooms due to the addition of a spacious balcony with outdoor seating. Balcony cabins can also come in a queen bed or two twin configuration and have a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Mini-Suite (303 square feet, including balcony)

Mini-Suites are essentially large balcony cabins with more storage space, more closet space and more floor space. These rooms have all the amenities of other cabins but include two flat-screen televisions (one for the bedroom area and another for couch viewing).

Cabana Mini-Suite (329 square feet, including balcony and cabana)

The Cabana Mini-Suite on the Sun Princess.

These rooms add the indoor-outdoor space of the cabana adjacent to the outdoor balcony. The cabana area has seating for several people and its own flat-screen television (in addition to the in-room TV).

Signature Suites (304 to 636 square feet, including balcony)

Signature Suites range in size and include larger balconies with premium furniture, two flat-screen televisions, a more spacious bathroom with a separate tub and shower, and dedicated sleeping and living areas.

Signature Sky Suites (1,262 square feet, including balcony)

Princess Cruises Signature Sky Suites are the largest staterooms across all Princess vessels, and they have all the bells and whistles you can imagine. Standout features of Sky Suites include separate living and dining areas; huge, luxurious bathrooms; and Nespresso coffee machines.

(Note: Sanctuary Collection rooms are dotted throughout the ship and consist of balcony-, mini-suite- and suite-category accommodations.)

Best amenities on Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

Since my itinerary on the Sun Princess cruise ship included multiple port stops, I didn't get to experience everything the ship had to offer. However, what I did experience was worth it – from the nonstop entertainment in the piazza to over-the-top dining features. Some of my standout experiences include:

Part dinner and part magic show, Spellbound by Magic Castle is bookable for an additional charge. The experience begins with a small group dinner with drink pairings, then moves to a hidden bar area of the ship, where the magic begins. The bar itself features magical artifacts and vintage curiosities, a "ghost" pianist, and an incredible drink menu designed to wow and delight guests. Some drinks were served in cages, golden owls and elaborate chests with dry ice.

Magic came in the form of intriguing card tricks and disappearing acts at the bar, plus a separate stage area where crowd participation helped facilitate the illusions. I don't want to give anything more than that away – you must simply experience it for yourself. Though I thought Spellbound was slightly cheesy at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and show and feel it was worth the added cost.

The Dome on the Sun Princess is part pool area and part stage. Guests can swim in a unique indoor-outdoor pool by day and watch entertainers dance in the evening, with alluring lighting effects and a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

I watched an acrobatics show in The Dome from the comfort of a padded lounge chair and thought the venue was the place to be.

Princess Arena

The Princess Arena is a circular stage area that holds up to 990 guests. Shows on offer include multifaceted stage productions and acrobatic features with plenty of surprises.

Fitness center

The Sun Princess' fitness center was huge and featured a range of treadmills, stair climbers, weights and machines to choose from. I never had trouble securing a treadmill at any time, even though I've had to wait and fight crowds for machines on other cruise ships.

I also loved the expansive walking track on the ship, which was constantly in use by both serious exercisers and cruisers walking leisurely to enjoy the views. I used the walking track every morning for at least an hour; I found it much more spacious and usable than other ship walking tracks, which are often congested and never quite wide enough.

The ship also features a Fitness Studio with guided classes, but I did not use it during my trip.

Sun Princess features five large pools and nine hot tubs. There are two pools on the lido deck, plus an indoor-outdoor pool in The Dome, a Sanctuary pool (for Sanctuary Collection guests only) and a wake-view infinity pool.

Medallion services

Princess MedallionClass is one of the coolest and most convenient amenities at sea. In place of a traditional cruise card, Princess gives you a small wearable device to bring with you around the ship and on shore. The medallion tracks your physical location on the ship, which allows you to order services and deliveries on board no matter where you are. Medallion delivery options range from food and drinks to extra pillows or bottled water.

I ordered room service through my medallion multiple times and hot, fresh food arrived in my cabin in less than 20 minutes. Meanwhile, drinks were delivered to our cabin and elsewhere on the ship in less than five minutes.

MedallionNet

Princess' Wi-Fi at sea (MedallionNet) is the fastest internet service I have ever used on a cruise ship. The internet was fast and reliable enough for me to complete some work while on board, which is not the norm on cruise ships.

Best dining venues Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

Sun Princess features 30 dining and bar options, many of which are included in the base cruise fare. Complimentary dining venues on Sun Princess include three traditional dining rooms, The Eatery (a take on the classic buffet, but with staff service), a café for coffee and light bites, The Lido (serving up salads, pizza and more) and the Promenade Dining grill.

Specialty dining options for an extra charge range from O'Malley's Irish Pub to a sushi spot to steak, seafood and Italian restaurants. For an extra special experience, head to Love by Britto to indulge in fine dining, or opt for Umai hot pot or teppanyaki venues. Meanwhile, bars on Sun Princess include Bellini's Cocktail Bar, Sea View Bar, The MIX and more.

My personal favorite dining experiences included:

My Spellbound dinner was excellent, even though the menu is fairly brief. I enjoyed a delicious shrimp cocktail and seafood entree, followed by a vegan dessert (I'm allergic to dairy and the ship happily accommodated). What stood out for me with Spellbound, at least food-wise, was the eclectic selection of drink pairings offered with the meal. It started with a caprese salad cocktail that tasted like tomatoes and balsamic vinegar in a strange, delicious way, then moved on to the spooky concoctions offered in the Spellbound bar.

Crown Grill

Crown Grill, a specialty dining venue, is not unique to Sun Princess, but it is the cruise line's most popular steakhouse brand. My mom and I had a delicious meal here for her birthday that included a Mediterranean-style spiny lobster cake, Chilean sea bass and a huge (surprise) birthday cake delivered to our table.

The Catch by Rudi

The Catch by Rudi is the ship's specialty dining seafood restaurant. Here, I dined on a delicious shrimp cocktail and the catch of the day (a grilled dorado filet). Everything was fresh and the meal was exceptional from start to finish.

I loved The Eatery, the ship's buffet-style dining option. The main difference between this venue and more traditional cruise ship buffets is that you're served by staff instead of serving yourself, which I prefer. The Eatery featured a rotating selection of exceptional main courses (seafood, chicken, beef and ethnic options), salads, appetizers and delicious desserts. It even had a vegan section and an easy-to-find selection of gluten-free offerings.

Best excursions on Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

The best excursions on Sun Princess vary depending on where you're going on your cruise – the Caribbean or various Europe destinations. Here's an overview of some excellent excursions offered aboard Sun Princess, a few of which I did myself.

Corfu, Greece

Catamaran Coastal Cruise & Swim: This easy excursion lets you see Corfu from the sea and get out into the water for some snorkeling and swimming. I picked this excursion so we could relax for one day and avoid a lot of walking, and it delivered. A delicious lunch with an open bar was served on board as we sailed around the island taking in some of Corfu's most beautiful sights.

Naples, Italy

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Cruise: No trip to this region of Italy is complete without a stop in the Amalfi Coast . This excursion was a long one (eight to nine hours) with lots of walking and bus time, but the views of this dynamic coast and time spent in Amalfi and Sorrento made the travel time well worth it.

Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos

Island Vibes & Beach Swim: This relatively short excursion includes a narrated bus trip throughout the island of Grand Turk, highlighting some of the island's top sights. A beach break at picturesque Governor's Beach is included.

Princess Cays, Bahamas

Princess Cays Coastal Cruise: Princess Cruises' private island offers a range of bookable activities, from banana boat rides to snorkeling tours. This coastal cruise is another option that takes you along the shores of Eleuthera in a 40-foot Reef Princess boat.

Overall impressions of Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

If you're considering a cruise on Sun Princess, you should know that this isn't your traditional Princess ship. The look and feel of this vessel are younger and livelier compared to other Princess ships I have sailed on. Gone are the hallways filled with cruisers knitting and playing cards; in their place, you'll find dancing, entertainment, music and activities around the clock.

When it comes to Sun Princess dining, every meal I had on board was either very good or excellent. You don't even have to opt for an extra-cost specialty dining venue to get a good meal. The Eatery and the regular dining rooms feature fresh, seasonal foods that are more than enough for the average palate to enjoy.

Caribbean itineraries on offer later this year (and into 2025) start at around $660 per person for an interior cabin, and Princess features an endless roster of sales throughout the year. If you're looking for a new cruising experience and want to give Princess a try (or another chance), Sun Princess is more than worthy of your consideration.

Port of San Diego Releases Fifth Blue Economy Incubator Highlights

  • June 23, 2024

HyperKelp, the newest company to join the Blue Economy Incubator, is set to deploy five smart buoys in San Diego Bay this summer to monitor underwater noise levels and various water quality parameters for the Port’s environmental monitoring initiatives.

The Port of San Diego released the fifth edition of its Blue Economy Incubator (BEI) Highlights Report, highlighting the program’s impact in numbers, expanding global partnership and media coverage including a Ted Talk featuring BEI Program Director Paula Sylvia.

Established in 2016, the Blue Economy Incubator served as a launch pad for sustainable aquaculture and Port-related blue technology ventures, operating as the only program of its kind based at and operated by a port.

“The Port of San Diego’s Blue Tech Bay is yet another example of how we are leading the way in creative business ventures all while delivering on our promise to be good stewards of San Diego Bay,” said Chairman Frank Urtasun, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “As our Blue Economy Incubator grows, the Port will continue to make waves and be recognized as a port of firsts.”

The report highlights partnerships with organizations like 1,000 Ocean Startups, Blue Action, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Ocean-based Climate Resilience Accelerators Program, and the Start Blue program at Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

The program’s impact in numbers includes:

  • $5.4 million in investments leveraged by Blue Economy Incubator companies.
  • $2.5 million in research and development funds leveraged by Blue Economy Incubator companies.
  • $1.95 million in funding to support the launch of sustainable aquaculture and blue tech pilot projects.
  • 44 million impressions from global media coverage including TedTalk San Diego, The Cool Down and Ocean Optimism podcast.
  • 20 million juvenile-stage oysters expected to be produced annually when Shelley Diego Bay Aquaculture’s FLUPSY is fully permitted and operating at full capacity.
  • 500 pounds of edible seaweed produced weekly by Sunken Seaweed.
  • 50+ different species, including sessile species, mobile invertebrates, fish and algae living on ECOncrete’s bio-enhancing shoreline protection armor units.

To date, the Board of Port Commissioners has sanctioned ten agreements with early-stage companies, including one reinvestment, to initiate innovative pilot projects, with six already concluded. The latest addition, HyperKelp, plans to launch five smart buoy platforms this summer to monitor underwater noise levels and various water quality parameters as part of The Port’s environmental monitoring efforts.

The report provides further information on this and other ongoing pilot projects involving Sunken Seaweed, FREDsense Technologies, and San Diego Bay Aquaculture.
