Cruise Holidays

New horizons - and waking up to them - fresh vistas every time you pull back those curtains, and relaxing on some of the most exciting ships ever to sail the seven seas. We know what makes a cruise, and know every ship from top to bottom, stem to stern. We know the best ports to call at, and the best ways to combine a cruise trip with the perfect destination whether it's one, two or three! With two-thirds of this big, beautiful world covered in ocean, luxury, adventure, and even water slides aren’t limited to just dry land anymore.

Cruise Types

Whether this is your first cruise trip or your 21st, there’s a lot of open water out there to explore, and a lot of choice when it comes to destinations, resorts and the cruises themselves. We wouldn’t want you to feel overwhelmed when it comes to planning your time sailing the ocean blue, so we’re here to break down our cruise types for you.

cruise and stay

Cruise and stay

Cruise & Stay holidays merge everything that rocks about cruise holidays with a fun-filled stay in an extraordinary place. Whether you want a blissful beach break or to stick around to explore a city, you can easily pair it with an epic cruise experience to keep your journey constantly fresh and vibrant. Party, relax and treat yourself onboard before getting up close and personal with a fantastic destination, all in one holiday.

Fly cruise

Fly and cruise

Booking a fly and cruise option gets you to your holiday destination quicker than setting sail from a UK port, so you can reach those gorgeous Caribbean islands in a shorter space of time. Or maybe combine a cheeky stay on land (Florida, perhaps?) before hopping on board one of our favourite cruise lines. There's so many options we can help with to make your cruise holiday perfectly tailored to you.

Since we're part of the Virgin family, it's a no brainer we'll fly you with Virgin Atlantic to start your cruise.

Cruise UK

Cruise from the UK

Don’t feel like flying? Want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the airport? We’ve got you covered with plenty of departures from ports in the UK, and you’ll still have the world at your fingertips. Sail around Europe for a taster (perfect for those who are new to cruising), or take the scenic route over the ocean as far as the Caribbean for cruise holidays that start as soon as you’re onboard.

The places you'll go

With its evolution made evident by its top seafaring landmarks and pub-filled cobble streets, Portsmouth is the perfect place to start (or end) your British holiday.

Stylish yet relaxed, these picturesque Dutch canals-lined streets are a bustling cultural hub where historic charm meets inspiring and youthful energy.

With a UNESCO world heritage site, cool clubs, & hip bars you’ll have no problem finding fun and adventure in Bergen.

Visit the amazing beaches, explore the labyrinth of sea caves & witness wildlife from Orca whales to Shetland ponies.

This Icelandic port town offers breathtaking natural beauty, whale watching and a spa where you bathe in beer.

Ísafjörður is a charming patchwork of 18th-century timber and tin-clad buildings, towering peaks and dark fjord waters.

Reykjavik features otherworldly landscapes, blue lagoons, volcanoes, glaciers, lava fields and a thriving nightlife.

We have even more in our curated catalog.

An ocean of opportunities calling your name.

There’s nothing more liberating than having the freedom of charting your own course. No pre-assigned seating, no fixed schedules, no limited options, no nonsense — just a shipload of opportunities to rejuvenate your body and transform your soul.

We’re making waves from the Caribbean to the Med, the Adriatic to the Red, and everywhere in between across 4 continents. Join us on an unparalleled journey of relaxation and indulgence, and discover the things — and the people — that make each destination so special. • What's Included

With Richard Branson at the helm, Virgin Voyages is redefining what a luxury cruise ship means by combining premium elements from favorites on land with the freedom and simplicity of a life well lived on the open ocean.

Some of the most stylish restaurants, bars and hotels — like The Mondrian, The Ace Hotel, and La Tounde, from the world's most renowned designers, like Concrete Amsterdam, Roman and Williams, and Tom Dixon — have inspired some of the most iconic musical acts to croon about memories made in these places. And in trying to design spaces worthy of inspiring future hits, Virgin got the band back together again.

21st Century Sailing :  Swipe it. Dim it. Play it. Tap it. Order. Love it. Virgin don't want to encourage you to stay in bed all day, but with their killer app and tablet in every room, they have made it very tempting. And if the trip starts while you're mid-binge, worry not — they literally have a satellite (yes, a satellite) that can beam you all the goodness. So dim the lights, order in, make a reservation all while being completely horizontal.

Green on Blue :  Virgin Voyages greatest aim is for sailors to have the best time on board while indulging… minus all the guilt.  So to do that, they have embedded sustainability deeply into both their operations and the sailor experience itself. Through pioneering innovative and sustainable technologies, banning unnecessary single-use plastics, and thoughtfully sourcing food and retail merchandise — they are creating a sailor experience that balances the duality of enjoying the earth and caring for it.

'boutique hotel at sea': virgin voyages ceo hails richard branson's 'biggest endeavour', the stories you don't know about some of the world's best and little-known brands.

“This is probably the biggest endeavour we’ve done at Virgin,” says Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages , the kid-free travel brand launched in 2021 by business magnate Sir Richard Branson.

The story goes that Branson, who founded his Virgin brand while working on a London houseboat in the early 1970s, first harboured dreams of starting a cruise line in his twenties. “But he never got round to it and it's a lot of capital involved,” adds Saverimuttu, who has worked for Branson since 2006.

“If you sat down with Richard, he would tell you that he was 30, 40, then 50 and finally got it done in his sixties. And then he had his 70th birthday on one of our ships.”

Saverimuttu, a former investment banker with Goldman Sachs ( GS ), created new businesses such as Virgin America and Virgin Hotels before focusing on a cruise line plan in 2012. Virgin Voyages, which has raised northwards of $1bn in equity, took eight years to get off the ground.

Traditionally, it takes around four years from ship design to launch at sea. When they first designed the product, following two years of research, Virgin chiefs thought it would be a more adult-centric, not adult only offering. “We wanted to make sure we got the product and culture right and that takes time,” says Saverimuttu.

The brand took delivery of its first ‘lady ship’ in February 2020 before COVID hit and they launched a year later. There are now three ‘mid-size’ ships in operation, with 2,700 passengers and 1,200 staff, half the size of the biggest ships across the globe.

On board the ‘boutique hotel at sea’, there are over 20 spaces to eat, with its biggest restaurant set at 200 seats and made-to-order food. On the entertainment side there are 400 seats, as opposed to 2,000 on traditional cruises. There are also no dress codes, buffets or set dining times.

“Richard has been about finding opportunities for these under-served markets which tend to be dominated by a handful of people and overlooking a certain customer segment,” adds Saverimuttu.

“He started an airline because he felt the British consumer was getting a raw deal. Cruises are different. They are a very good experience and value for money but there is a good segment which is getting overlooked.”

Virgin Voyages, says Saverimuttu, takes all the best parts of cruising and adds a twist for more widespread appeal. This includes its ‘fair but flexible’ fares. “We shouldn’t penny pinch. You pay the fare to come on board, everything is included and the audience doesn’t like to be charged extra,” he admits.

This includes high-speed Wifi, drinks packages, fitness and entertainment. Its flexibility also means there is no charge for name or date changes, the latter up to 45 days before travel.

Its ‘Work from Helm’ programme, which includes four back-to-back voyages, was also inspired by Branson.

“He’s always championed this work from home culture and more flexible working environments," admits Saverimuttu. “He said people love being on our ships so why not give them the opportunity to do so.

“The response was overwhelming and we sold out of some month and multiple month voyages. We didn’t know quite how impactful it would be but I should have known as it was one of Richard’s ideas, which always tend to work.”

There are 80s-style fitness classes while ships have nights such as Studio 72 — based on Studio 54 with circus acts — while its Scarlet Nights sees the whole ship turn red. “People like to be reminded of nostalgia and the kid-free environment allows people to be themselves,” says Saverimuttu.

“There is a misperception with us that we only appeal to people in their twenties and thirties. We have a wide audience who tend to be in their forties to sixties as well.

“When we first launched we got a lot of feedback on entertainment. Some leaned a bit too risqué. People said they just wanted live music and comedy. In some places we probably made some mistakes and leaned too heavily into adult only experiences.”

When Virgin’s third ship Resilient Lady subsequently launched in early 2023, the group’s third ship, it won a best entertainment award. Management also took on board customer feedback on its cabins which were ‘too Ikea like’.

The revamp ended in a best cabin award. "We are open to feedback and Richard and I always see it’s a very important part, to always listen to sailors and crew. It’s part of the Virgin DNA.”

There are now over 100 destinations with 19 itineraries. The growing portfolio allows UK audiences to sail from Barcelona, Athens and, from September, Portsmouth. Overnights at port have also been added. “What we heard loud and clear is that people want to stay longer at destinations,” says Saverimuttu.

Asked what he would do following the recent news when a Norwegian Cruise captain refused to let eight passengers reboard the ship after they were late, Saverimuttu simply says “The guiding principle is that we do the right thing for the sailor.”

The Florida-based CEO has product tested the ships he oversees, with his wife and friends, and is partial to the outdoor training space with boxing rings and yoga, late night pizza (served until 2am) the Mediterranean tapas and the popular hammocks on balconies.

“The thing that’s magical about cruising is that we tend to forget how wonderful it is to be out on the ocean,” admits Saverimuttu. “We created the ship to celebrate the fact we are sailing. I feel like a lot of the perks of the industry are designed to be inward looking, these ships are designed to be outward looking.”

Behind the brand: Virgin Voyages CEO on…

For me everything starts with the people. Richard has a simple saying, ‘If you treat your people well, then they’ll treat your customers well and the business will thrive.’

It’s important we speak to our crew, what’s working and not working. It’s simple things, like being approachable. Leaders tend to lock themselves in the ivory tower. We tell our leaders to be out there with the crew and to roll their sleeves up. In our culture, our crew feel heard and seen and don't feel like a number.

Working with Branson

Richard is remarkable in how in tune he is with consumers. A lot of times he’s always thinking ahead. Sometimes we struggle to keep up. The ‘Work from Helm’ is a great example and he had been pushing us to launch it for over a year. I always carry a notebook as he always has something to say on how we can improve the experience. For example, he came on board and noticed there were not enough medium weights during work outs. It’s been a great success since.

Virgin Voyages' in London with Richard Branson on a double decker ship

Brilliant to be in London for the launch of my audiobook, and the start of Virgin Voyages ’ Mediterranean sailing season!

Richard Branson on a Virgin Voyages double decker ship in London

To start the season in style, Virgin Voyages created a roadworthy version of our first ship, Scarlet Lady. The team also brought the sunshine with them, and we spent the morning cruising around London and handing out hundreds of free sailings. I loved seeing everyone’s faces light up when they saw the ship on their morning commute! Businesses and business leaders should never underestimate their ability to make someone’s day.

It's incredible to see all the wonderful new adventures Virgin Voyages will embark upon this Summer, with new itineraries from Portsmouth, Barcelona, and Athens . They now have more than 45 different routes through the Med with beautiful names like ‘Starry Nights in Greece & Croatia’ and ‘French Daze & Ibiza Nights’.

Richard Branson wiht Virgin Voyages in London

As I stood on the bus, waving our way from Big Ben to Oxford Street – I felt a pang of nostalgia about the early days at Virgin, which was also built on a boat.

The first property I ever bought was a houseboat in West London, which I called Duende. It went on to become our makeshift Virgin office for many years, and it has a very special place in my heart. It was on this houseboat that my cousin Simon Draper and I decided to start a record company – Virgin Records – along with my childhood friend Nik Powell. It was also the place we signed Mike Oldfield as our very first artist.

Richard Branson sitting with Al Clark on his old houseboat

It was also where I learnt Joan was pregnant with Holly, which changed our lives forever. The kids grew up on the houseboat, playing in the corner as we held meetings with anyone from Mick Jagger to serious solicitors. Some of my happiest family moments, and our greatest business deals were signed on Duende. I’ve shared many of these stories in my two memoirs, which I’ve now combined into an audiobook called Losing and Finding My Virginity .

Richard and Holly Branson as a child at a desk on a houseboat

It was the first time I’ve ever narrated a book, and I underestimated how tough it would be! Particularly as a dyslexic. To record it, we created a makeshift studio on Necker, which was soundproofed by pillows, mattresses, and anything we could find. The sweat and stumbles will all be worth it, if it encourages even just one person to pursue their dreams and say: “screw it, let’s do it” like I have so many times in my life. This is how we build the stories of our lives.

After disembarking the bus-boat, I headed off to a houseboat near Duende to meet a bunch of people working across our UK Virgin companies. There was so much excitement in the room, and it reminded me how it is our people that make Virgin the brand it is today. One very bubbly woman I met was called Olga, and she works with us at Virgin Hotels Edinburgh. I was so inspired by her enthusiasm, and it was only later that I learnt how she fled Ukraine when the war broke out. It turns out she has wanted to work for Virgin from a young age after her father read her one of my books. When she received her visa for the UK, she spotted the Virgin Hotels role and couldn’t be a more perfect fit!

Richard Branson with a group of Virgin employees in London

Next up was an on-air interview with The Ryan Tubridy show on Virgin Radio where we talked about everything from the Sex Pistols, to dyslexia, why I try to live with no regrets, and how this creates enough content for an audiobook! Unfortunately, Ryan was wearing a tie, so I had to cut it off as part of my no ties policy !

7 of the best solo cruise lines for single passengers

C ruises are a well-trodden holiday option, offering the opportunity to explore various parts of the world while enjoying the comfort of a hotel on the seas.

These trips are popular with both families and couples, but they can be just as rewarding and enjoyable for solo travellers, giving you as much flexibility as you want along with opportunities to meet like-minded holidaymakers and see some of the world’s finest tourist destinations .

Daily activities will keep you entertained while onboard, while organised excursions or solo trips let you see a magnificent range of towns and cities at your leisure. Solo-specific events mean that meeting other travellers is as easy as sitting down to dinner, while you’ll have a comfortable solo cabin to come back to at the end of each day. Choose the right cruise and you’ll get all of this while avoiding the common ‘singles surcharge’.

If you’ve got the itch to book, we’ve rounded up a selection of the best cruise liners for single passengers below.

Riviera Travel

Riviera Travel operates river cruises around the world, with destinations as far as Egypt and Vietnam . Nevertheless, the focus is on European river cruises , with plenty of packages to the Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Douro and Danube on offer. Packages include return flights, airport transfers and all meals onboard, with an extensive range of excursions and activities including guided tours and on-board folk music shows.

European river cruises are the only option that Riviera offers for solo travellers, with seven routes that cover the continent’s main rivers. Prices include all the same features as a standard booking – such as excursions, onboard meals and Wi-Fi – but with spacious single occupancy cabins and welcome dinners to help you meet people. Solo bookings also include the ‘superior’ drinks package, which gives guests an extensive selection of alcoholic drinks available both at lunch and between 6pm and midnight. The Rhine and Moselle package is their most affordable, starting in Cologne and taking you to beautiful towns like Koblenz and Rudesheim.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers adult-only cruises packed with a huge range of activities, from morning yoga classes to evening cabaret. There are plenty of solo cabins – their inaugural ship, Scarlet Lady, has 46 – and itineraries include solo meet-ups, activities and excursions with plenty of opportunities to meet other single travellers.

Packages include food, drink and activities as standard. With only four ships in the fleet, your choice of destination is slightly more limited, though you can still visit picturesque locations in Europe, the Caribbean , parts of Southern Asia and Australia. The Southeastern Caribbean Isles package will take you on a roundtrip from Puerto Rico, stopping in Guadeloupe, Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian was the first cruise company to build ships with cabins and lounge areas that were specifically for solo travellers, and there are now around 1,000 solo cabins across its ships. Solo travellers can choose from Oceanview rooms, inside rooms, rooms with a balcony and even studios, and they will have access to the Solo Lounge – a private lounge only for guests travelling alone – where various events and happy hours are held.

Normal packages include food and onboard activities, though several bookings let you choose to add extras – from shore excursions to speciality meals or a free bar – for a small added fee. Norwegian sail across a wide range of destinations too, from the British Isles and the Mediterranean to Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean.

Tauck claims to have specialised in solo travel for over 90 years, and today this translates to special solo savings and no single supplement on European river cruises. Travellers looking to see the continent ‘solo style’ can benefit from savings of up to £750, and will enjoy more stylish, contemporary ships with fewer guests for an overall more luxurious experience. Trips cover Europe’s main waterways, and prices include all food, drink, activities and shore tours. Choose the Yuletide package between Brussels and Amsterdam for a festive experience at some of the best Christmas markets – and prettiest waterways – on the continent.

Ambassador Cruise Line

Ambassador is a new cruise line where trips begin in cities around the UK , including Liverpool , Belfast, Dundee and Bristol. Both Ambience and Ambition have 89 dedicated cabins set aside for solo travellers, available “at a special single supplement against the equivalent twin fare based on selected single cabin categories”. The operator journeys to a vast range of destinations considering there are only two ships in its fleet, with voyages going as far as Singapore , Brazil and New Zealand.

Ambassador’s cruises contain an extensive programme of activities for solo passengers, including a ‘Welcome Get Together’ and guided tours together with other solo travellers. Other onboard entertainment ranges from West End-style shows to comedy nights, with plenty of opportunities to meet others. If cruising during winter, visit Norway to see wondrous fjords and (possibly) the aurora borealis, with the Land of the Northern Lights package.

Oceania has made considerable investment in providing options for solo travellers, with its newest ship, Vista, containing six 270-square-foot solo cabins that include balconies, premium lounge access and a welcome bottle of champagne. It has fitted its older ships with 14 ‘Solo Staterooms’, all of which offer magnificent sea views.

Oceania voyages make it easy to meet like-minded travellers with solo meet-and-greet events, large mixed dining tables, mixed shore excursions and single-traveller activities such as art classes. Destinations range from the Mediterranean and Scandinavia to South Africa and the tropics, meaning solo travellers have opportunities to see a large portion of the world alone. Book the 14-day  Miami to Tenerife cruise  to experience Mediterranean charm and Caribbean beauty in late March.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean say that they do not “have specific pricing for single occupancy” cabins, but that they do offer single cabins on some of their ships, including Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. These cruises “can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee”, and they cover an extensive range of destinations, from Europe to the Caribbean and Singapore to Australia.

Passengers can reserve inside studio staterooms, virtual balcony staterooms and super studio ocean view stateroom with balconies, giving them between 101 and 199 square feet of space. Everything else will be the same as usual, meaning you can enjoy the same benefits as every other guests without paying a premium. If departing from the UK, the only tours available take you around Europe; the most extensive is the Mediterranean Cities package, covering Seville, Sardinia, Rome , Lisbon and more.

Virgin Voyages launches First Mate Loot, for UK First Mates – the award-winning cruise line’s travel agents

' src=

The reason Sailors can enjoy a voyage is because of the work First Mates put in to get them there. Created in association with My Booking Rewards (MBR), the market leader in agent rewards and incentives, the First Mate Loot initiative has been introduced and offers cash pay-outs to UK First Mates who’ve successfully booked Sailors on a sailing.

The way it works is simple — once First Mates book a Sailor’s voyage, they’ll create an account on the First Mate Loot website (firstmateloot.com), log the booking details and Virgin Voyages will verify and pay out the earnings.

SJ Walker, Director of Sales UK at Virgin Voyages said: “It’s not lost on us that the reason our Sailors are able to kick back and enjoy a relaxing holiday at sea is because of the tireless hard work our dedicated First Mates have put in to get them there. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce the First Mate Loot initiative and offer cash pay-outs to First Mates who’ve successfully booked Sailors on our luxurious lady ships. This is our little added bonus way of thanking agents for booking top-notch Sailors on our worldwide itineraries. We want to continue offering epic experiential incentives and we believe First Mate Loot is a perfect way to say thank you.”

Darren Pearson, Founder and CEO, My Booking Rewards, comments: “We are delighted to bolster our cruise line offering for our agent members with this Virgin Voyages partnership. Our agile technology will certainly support their drive to incentivise and reward agents across the UK and Ireland. And, as a respected and hugely popular cruise brand, Virgin Voyages solidifies the MBR cruise offering allowing us to open up increased earnings on cruise holidays for the all-important Peaks period.”

From now until 30 May, agents will receive £30 for Mediterranean or Northern Europe voyages departing on select 2024 and 2025 sailings. All other voyages will receive £10 per booking.

Richard Branson reveals cruise ships' secret button that get you instant Champagne

Virgin Voyages boss Sir Richard Branson has revealed the simple gesture that cruise passengers can make if they want to get instant Champagne while on holiday

virgin voyages from uk

  • 10:42, 19 Apr 2024

Richard Branson has shared a simple trick that will see Champagne delivered directly to you on cruises .

When asked about his favourite lesser-known feature of his Virgin Voyages cruise line during a trip to London, the business mogul told the Mirror of the very stream-lined process customers can go through to send a bottle of bubble their way.

With the Virgin Voyages app installed on their phone, passengers can give their mobile a shake to see a secret button appear on their screen. Once this has been tapped, a bottle of Möet Chandon Impérial will be delivered directly to them, regardless of where they are onboard.

Sir Richard was in London to promote his cruise line, from the top of a double-decker bus decorated to look like a ship sailing through the streets of the English Capital. He disembarked at several points to hand out free holidays to lucky pedestrians who happened to be passing.

Sir Richard explained how he sat down with his team ahead of Virgin Voyages' launch nine years ago and wrote down all the things they loved and hated about the cruise experience. "They drew this picture of this cruise ship that is more like a private yacht, better than a private yacht. When I walked on there (for the first time) there was nothing I wanted to change. Nothing. Which is rare when you launch a new company."

He added: "It’s been wonderful to go aboard Scarlet Lady this morning, sailing around and surprising lucky Londoners with free voyages. I’m a big believer in it not just being about where you go, but how you get there. Summer is a time for exploration, relaxation, and creating unforgettable memories."

Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages, was also on hand to share some of his favourite features, which include Richard Rooftop - an exclusive space atop the ship for those who book a suite.

"There is an outdoor workout area onboard, one of my favourite actually is training camp which if this was a kid friendly ship would've been a teen space. When we decided to be a kid free voyage we took all the spaces that would've been for kids and converted them into outdoor workout areas, so we have an indoor-outdoor CrossFit workout area," he explained from Oxford Street as happy members of the public received free holidays nearby.

"One of the big differences with Virgin Voyages is that we didn't want to create any big dining halls, or any big buffets. We wanted to make sure everything was made to order. When people think about cruise ships they think about big dining halls, buffets, we wanted to make it feel like you're going out to dinner in London."

Onboard guests will be pampered through a number of other luxury features including sunrise yoga sessions and even a tattoo parlour. You can find out more on virginvoyages.com .
