Jimmy Barnes is a singer/songwriter hailing from Elizabeth, Australia who was born on April 28th, 1956. As a solo artist and singer of Cold Chisel, Barnes has become one of the most succesful Australian musicians of all time, with 13 solo studio albums to his name.

James Dixon was born in Glasgow, Scotland but grew up in Elizabeth, the city that he and his family moved to when he was four years of age. His parents divorced soon after they settled down and the young James would later take the name of his stepfather Reg Barnes, but through the hard times, they remained a musical family. Because of this, he and his brother Jon would form and play in several different rock bands over the course of their teenage years, and by the end of 1973, Barnes had formed the first incarnation of Cold Chisel, the band that would catapult him to stardom. The band made a name for themselves almost immediately, but Barnes had a tempestuous relationship with the rest of the group, leaving and re-joining them at little more than a moment’s notice. By 1977 he was all set to leave Cold Chisel and join his brother’s band Feather, but his farewell gig was so astonishingly good he changed his mind, and a single month later, the band signed their first record deal.

In three years the band became the biggest rock group in Australia, and Barnes himself became notorious and loved for his hard-drinking, rock and roll lifestyle. The problem was that the internal friction in the band didn’t let up, and the band acrimoniously split in 1983, almost precisely a decade after they first formed. Barnes was still Australia’s highest profile rock musician however, and a month after the band split he began his solo career, signing to Mushroom Records for the release of his 1984 debut “Bodyswerve”. Ever since then he’s remained one of the most beloved Australian rock stars of all time, talked about in the same breath as Angus Young and Nick Cave in his home country. With over four decades of experience, few musicians can rock quite like Jimmy Barnes, and for that, he comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

Scottish born, Australian raised Jimmy Barnes is an intense performer to watch live. A varied and interesting musical history means his stage show feels completely personal to him, there are no gimmicks or gadgets, it's a simple affair between Barnes and the audience. A huge influencer in Australia, with nine solo number one albums, the demand to see this performer live is still huge.

Barnes was originally part of Australia's biggest blues rock band of the 80's, Cold Chisel. He still performs some of their original tracks including passionate renditions of 'You Got Nothing I Want' and 'When The War is Over'. He's had a string of hits in his homeland, yet he rarely plays what many would consider to be a greatest hits set anymore, yet often includes a brilliant rendition of the gritty 'Working Class Man'.

The performer also rarely performs his INXS collaborations which gave him his most international notoriety. However what he dismisses in setlist, he compensates in that synonymous gruff, blues vocal which sounds fantastic all these years later and no matter what tracks Barnes chooses, he performs them to 110% and always leaves his loyal fans cheering and clapping for more.

Jimmy was as awesome as ever. Never get tired of listening to his voice which like good wine seems to get better with age. Is there anything he can't sing. Seems just as natural with his latest soul and R&B numbers as his old hard rock, managing to sneak in his signature screaches seamlessly delighting the audience and with great support from the next generation of talented musicians and back up singers including family. Very entertaining night at a classy venue at the Palais theatre, St Kilda. Can't wait till next performance Barnesy. Sam I.

I recently saw Jimmy at Roche Estate for the Red Hot Summer Tour. He was awesome. The crowds love him and go wild when he sings the most popular songs, especially Khe Sanh. 12,000 people singing along is a very powerful moment. The only downside to the night are those few rude people that violently push past you to get closer to the stage and if you say something they swear at you as if you’re in the wrong. Otherwise I had a great day and will definitely see Jimmy again.

shellie-pauling’s profile image

Jimmy was off his form or something on the last evening of the Big Red Bash. His throat sounded like it was affected by a cold. He seemed to struggle to get volume over his band and his interaction with the audience was lacking. He had a hard act to follow. The Angels were power charged, interactive and entertaining. All in all, Jimmy's performance that night was okay, but not up to par with the performances I have seen of his before.

The Crown to Happy Valley: who will win the TV Baftas … and who should?

As the biggest night in TV approaches, can Ghost Diana really reign supreme? Will Hannah Waddingham beat Ant and Dec? And will one of the world’s greatest actors get his first gong after almost 40 years?

T he 2024 Bafta TV awards are on Sunday (BBC One from 7pm), with the finales of Happy Valley and Succession plus newer dramas The Sixth Commandment and Slow Horses carrying the most nominations. As a Bafta member, I voted on the long lists and in one jury but have no advance knowledge of winners. Under Bafta’s policy of rewarding the previous calendar year, Mr Bates vs the Post Office (which premiered on 1 January 2024) has to wait until May 2025, so don’t be surprised by its absence. Here are my predictions for the TV Oscars.

Drama series

Siobhan Finneran and Sarah Lancashire in Happy Valley.

Though Top Boy and The Gold deserve their top-four finish, this feels like a final straight dash between the 10-year thoroughbred Happy Valley, going for a hat-trick of wins, and that frisky two-year-old Slow Horses . But the jury won’t have known that Gary Oldman was overlooked for his brilliant grotesquerie in that spy show and, anticipating several more runs from Slow Horses, seem likely to take a last chance to honour Happy Valley .

Limited drama

The earlier Bafta Television Craft awards (on 28 April) are often a good indication for success. Black Mirror’s Demon 79 won twice there (photography and lighting fiction), perhaps indicating the impact of a Bafta policy to appoint more younger jurors, which may also help it here. But the biggest rival must be The Sixth Commandment , a meticulous true murder drama with big audiences.

International

Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Jeremy Strong in Succession.

One category for the vast volume of foreign streamer content seems increasingly absurd, even with six (rather than the usual four) contenders. Could you easily pick one from The Bear , Beef and The Last of Us? But, as in the drama series category, a clinching factor may be the final chance to pay respects, laying Bafta’s bouquets in honour of the loss of Logan Roy and the wondrous Succession .

Leading actress

Another tough one. Anjana Vasan would be a deserving winner in yet another nod to Black Mirror’s 1979-set disaster movie episode. But in how many professions does someone reaching 89 this month maintain top form? That suggests a lot of love for Anne Reid , nudging her ahead of Sarah Lancashire, who delivered the new depths that writer Sally Wainwright found for her in the Happy Valley finale.

Leading actor

Timothy Spall in The Sixth Commandment

With TV fiction dominated by bio-drama, rumour suggests that some jurors struggle to separate recognising an actor from implied endorsement of the real character. So the technical brilliance of Steve Coogan in The Reckoning may be offset by his re-animating paedophile monster Jimmy Savile. Conversely, Republican doubts about Dominic West’s portrayal of the former Prince of Wales in The Crown could be softened by the health of the king this year. Paapa Essiedu is accumulating superb credits: honoured here for The Lazarus Project , he’s also in that multinominated Black Mirror episode. But Timothy Spall is seen sparingly on TV and would be a popular winner as the victim of fraud and murder, Peter Farquhar, in The Sixth Commandment.

Female performance in a comedy

Gbemisola Ikumelo as Dom in Black Ops.

Bridget Christie, a standout standup, deserves honour for The Change , as does Roisin Gallagher in The Lovers , a Belfast romcom that deserved more attention. But it should really go to Gbemisola Ikumelo for the cop comedy Black Ops .

Male performance in a comedy

If jurors are aware that one of our greatest actors is receiving his first Bafta TV nomination after an almost 40-year screen career, then surely it has to be David Tennant for Good Omens . If it’s not, the academy risks a credibility problem.

Supporting actress

Jasmine Jobson and Nyshai Caynes in Top Boy

In performance categories, the nightmare is great acting in a rubbish series. Should the uncanny accuracy of Elizabeth Debicki as Diana overcome her ludicrous scenes as the princess’s ghost (“Ta-da!,” to her widower on a private jet) in The Crown? Not in my view. So, ahead of Siobhan Finneran as the protagonist’s sister in Happy Valley, I’d like to see Jasmine Jobson win for a complex role in Top Boy.

Supporting actor

Salim Daw, as Mohamed Al Fayed in The Crown, faces the Debicki issue of skill v scripts. But Éanna Hardwicke looks like a future superstar and should be a shoo-in as the murderer in The Sixth Commandment.

Entertainment performance

The annual quandary here is whether Ant and Dec or Graham Norton have achieved anything recently they haven’t been doing brilliantly for decades. More imaginatively, the panel could reward a performer new to presenting – Hannah Waddingham for co-hosting the Eurovision song contest.

Comedy entertainment

Again, can the constant watchability and A-lister attraction of The Graham Norton Show be ignored? If it can, then Joe Lycett, with the fresher Late Night Lycett , feels like a threat.

Scripted comedy

If the Craft Baftas are a clue, Jack Rooke took the comedy writer trophy there for Big Boys and the show seems the leader here.

Specialist factual

‘Rollins’ in Chimp Empire

An unusual section: lacking contenders from traditional British broadcasters (BBC, Channel 4, ITV, Sky), this feels very open. Channel 5 ranks highly with White Nanny, Black Child – about a contentious historical adoption policy – and might just take it from the higher-profile Chimp Empire (Netflix), previewing post-Attenborough wildlife TV.

after newsletter promotion

What was once a joke category is now among the most strongly contested. Banged Up , Married at First Sight UK and My Mum, Your Dad would all be fitting victors but there should be a stewards’ inquiry if the trophy doesn’t go to the lavish and magnetic UK spin-off of a Korean drama, Squid Game: The Challenge .

Current affairs

There is understandably strong #MeToo support for Russell Brand: In Plain Sight , which may prevail. But Norma Percy is our greatest current affairs documentary maker and Putin vs the West showcases how she and her team create a first draft of history on which future chroniclers will depend. Present and former world leaders clear diaries to speak to her. Bafta must recognise this.

Entertainment

Michael McIntyre’s Big Show

Three regulars – Later … With Jools Holland, Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, Strictly Come Dancing – challenge Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas. As long as Waddingham won entertainment performance for Eurovision, I’d be happy to see this go to the extravagantly inventive Michael McIntyre’s Big Show .

Factual entertainment

Extremely strong pressure from my housemates Delilah and Fred to pat the back of pet-rescue heartwarmer The Dog House , but the biggest threat to their tails wagging feels likely to be Celebrity Race Across the World .

Factual series

Another discussion likely to have been long. Evacuation (from Kabul) and Lockerbie (exploring a still contested terrorist event 35 years on) were high-class. But if jurors understood the centrality of the UK’s only non-contiguous territory to British politics – from the Troubles through coalitions to Brexit – then Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland must win.

Live event coverage

At the 2023 ceremony, it was assumed that this year’s winner would be the coronation. But with the King undergoing cancer treatment and BBC anchor Huw Edwards resigning from the BBC after 10 months’ disciplinary suspension, that event feels far longer than a year ago, and misses the shortlist. The Coronation Concert is a compromise option for monarchists, but, after a strong showing at the Craft awards, Eurovision Song Contest feels Tattooed on to win.

News coverage

With two of the shortlist of three being the Channel 4 and Sky News coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, the committee chair may have had to fight to keep the debate focused on televisual excellence. Expect Sky News: Inside Myanmar – The Hidden War to emerge as an impressive compromise.

Single documentary

Ellie Simmonds with the Murray family in Ellie Simmonds: Finding My Secret Family

ITV, mysteriously, tends to be ignored by Bafta, so a win for Ellie Simmonds: Finding My Secret Family would redress a little of that wrong, but it may be close with David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived , about the health struggles of Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter stunt double.

A choice between interchangeable contenders in a threadbare category. Casualty, Eastenders or Emmerdale? Who cares? Bafta should retire this prize but, if there has to be a winner: Emmerdale .

Sports broadcasting production values are so uniformly strong that awards tend to involve other factors. Increasing equality in sport makes MOTD Live: Fifa Women’s World Cup 2023 the logical and populist winner.

Almost supernaturally, in Bafta terms, ITV has half the contenders. Juries see only a single episode chosen by producers, so I’d be surprised if the one-off co-ed edition of Loose Women And Men (generally Loose Women) didn’t pique the panel.

P&O Cruises memorable moment

Lucy performing at Leeds train station.

Disclosure: I was one of the jurors choosing the shortlist on which the public votes. Logan Roy’s final flight, the climactic Cawood-Royce kitchen standoff and Bill and Frank’s last supper in The Last of Us will win votes from fans of Succession, Happy Valley and The Last of Us. But a national ballot based on single clips benefits scenes immediately relatable to viewers unfamiliar with the series. That should help Victoria’s revelation of her dad’s Rolls-Royce in Beckham , but a history of emotive results in this section hints at victory for Lucy in Channel 4’s The Piano, stilling and silencing Leeds train station with her interpretation of Chopin.

Atlanta DJ’s Wife Murdered At Home, Where Toddler Son Saw Horrifying Scene and Tried to Wake Her

Tiffany Jackson Pugh, the wife of a popular Atlanta DJ, was fatally shot in her house while her two kids were also home, making for a heartbreaking scene caught on surveillance footage.

Tiffany Jackson Pugh featured on Dateline: Sound And Fury.

Tiffany Jackson Pugh , the wife of a popular Atlanta DJ, was 30 years old when she was fatally shot in her house while her two young children were also home.

How to Watch

Watch Dateline on NBC and Peacock .

Pugh’s November 2014 death, featured in a new two-hour Dateline  airing Friday, May 10 on NBC, sent shockwaves through the Atlanta music scene as fear spread that someone might be singling out the influential DJs who helped promote the careers of young rappers.

“The chilling echo of another DJ's murder just months prior raises suspicions of a targeted attack on the city's music community,” reads the synopsis for the episode that's titled “Sound and Fury."

“It’s way too coincidental that there are two DJs having these incidents happen to them,” journalist Christina Lee remarked in a preview video  of the Dateline   episode.

Even more disturbing, Pugh’s young son AJ was seen in heartbreaking home surveillance footage going to the front door to look for help after the toddler was unable to wake his slain mother.

Tiffany Jackson Pugh's killer was a "monster," her friend says

“Knowing that the kids were in the house said to me there was no heart, no regard for life — a monster,” Karmetria Burton, a former colleague and friend of Pugh, said of the killer in the Dateline preview.

The cold-blooded nature of the crime also struck NBC News correspondent Stephanie Gosk, who reported the story.

“Tiffany Pugh was shot and killed in her own bed. A 30-year-old mother with her whole life ahead of her,” Gosk told NBC Insider . “But beyond the cruelty of killing her, [she was shot when her] two small children were in the home.

"Andre Jr. was just two years old and often slept in the same bed with his mother," Gosk continued. "The image on security cameras of that little boy going to the front door in his pajamas looking for help will stay with me for a long time.”

Why  Tiffany Jackson Pugh's murder rocked Atlanta's music scene

Just 10 months before Pugh’s murder, William Fernando Barnes — known in the club scene by the name DJ Nando — was gunned down outside his home in what Gosk described as an “execution style killing.”

“ This show offers a vivid look into the hip hop rap scene in Atlanta," Gosk told NBC Insider . "And while the level of influence the strip clubs have on the industry may have waned in recent years, at the time these two murders took place, hip hop’s Atlanta was like country music’s Nashville.

“The DJs in clubs like Club Onyx made careers," Gosk added of the club where both Pugh's husband and DJ Nando worked. "They wielded an enormous amount of power over what people were listening to.”

Jeezy featured on Dateline: Sound And Fury

According to Gosk, rapper Jeezy, who is interviewed in the two-hour Dateline episode, “credits his enormous success” to DJ Nando and is still haunted to this day by the brutal killing.

Along with Jeezy, Lee, and Burton, the episode also includes interviews with Pugh’s father Tommy Jackson, Nick Love, and Sabrena Swinger.
