  • Beach Guide

Did you know... St. Croix is ringed by beaches of all shapes and sizes, some are long white sand stretches, others are small patches shaded by low sea grape trees and towering coconut palms. Some have smooth sandy bottoms ideal for swimming, and others have rock and coral-lined entries perfect for snorkeling! Did you know... St. Croix is the only Caribbean Island where a diver can: ●Dive a wall that drops over 13,000 feet ●Dive a reef that is the largest living reef of any Caribbean Island ●Dive five wrecks that are within 100 yards of each other ●Dive a pier

  • Weddings / Romance

DID YOU KNOW THAT... Many couples are opting to save the money (not to mention the stress and hard work) of a big wedding at home by escaping to a Caribbean island for a combination wedding/honeymoon. Upon their return, they can share the event by showing the video and photographs at an informal reception. All the islands are beautiful and, on some, weddings have become a major promotional tool. So why should you choose St. Croix above others?

  • Moving Here

DID YOU KNOW... In addition to it's long and rich multicultural history, friendly people, open spaces, the blue sea and near perfect year-round weather, there are a number of reasons to consider relocating to St Croix. Most importantly, the U.S. Virgin Islands, which includes St Croix, operate under U.S. law which is important in both business and personal matters.

This means mainland US companies do business here including retail stores such as K-Mart, Radio Shack, Office Max, McDonald's and Wendy's. Also U.S. financial services including a variety of U.S. mortgage, insurance and banking companies offer local service.  U.S. cellular phone companies including AT&T and Sprint, both operate here.

Arriving By Cruise Ship

The Ann E. Abramson Pier is named in honor of the Virgin Islands Public Works Commissioner who was responsible for much of the rejuvenation of the Frederiksted area. This is the pier where most of the large cruise ships dock, as well as military ships, submarines, and other naval vessels. From time to time, tall-ships especially from Denmark, can be seen here.

The dock itself has been a favorite diving place especially for viewing bright coral, sponges, and a multitude of fish life. A night dive should reveal the sea-horses unique to this pier. Visitors arriving at the pier often walk through the small town of Frederiksted and walk to the nearby beaches and beach club

Just do it!! Amazing adventure! Captain Curtis, Jackie and Peter show you one of the best days you can have packed with core memory building moments. They were friendly, knowledgeable, entertaining, enthusiastic and kept us safe. You won’t regret the full day Buck Island Snorkel/BBQ trip!!! Be sure to get there early and make reservations in advance.

The crew was amazing! Tour is a MUST DO! Snorkling the reef was beautiful with the crew in the water with you in case you needed assistance, Delicious lunch after Snorkling. Had an amazing time! Thank you, see ya next time!

BIG BEARD'S IS GREAT! Captain Curtis, Sidney and Peter were terrific. One of the members of our party was a "reluctant snorkeler" and she had a blast! Our friend rose above her fears (Thanks again, Sidney) and it was an amazing day. Even if you have a "reluctant snorkeler" in your group... Encourage them to ride along. Chances are they'll be glad you did!

100% incredible snorkeling trip to Buck Island, St Croix! The boat was great and the women running the boat were absolutely the best, not to mention very friendly and helpful! I totally recommend Big Beard’s Adventures! Great shop at the pier, too!

We did a sunset cruise with Big Beards. They were truly wonderful. They made it such a memorable trip. It was a beautiful relaxing evening filled with gorgeous sunset photos the crew helped us get some great family ones we’ll have for a lifetime! We highly recommend this cruise and this team! We will be going again!!

Whenever we have friends and/or family in town we always try to do a sunset sail. This trip was special as we had 3 generations on board. Captain Gabe and Mate Tristan made everyone comfortable and along with a gorgeous sunset kept everyone entertained with music, tunes on the conch shell and good island punch. The sails were up as we quietly swept over the water. We look forward to our next sunset sail. Thanks.

Words can’t even bring to describe this experience. Decided to go on a solo paddle to see the bioluminescent bay and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Insanely gorgeous, really cool history of the island and the waters. Craig and Brett are the best!!

logo

Tour was well organized, kayaks were comfortable. Our group used both the see through kayaks and the sit on top. The guides did a good job of pacing our group based on our ability. The bioluminescent bay was absolutely magical, highly recommend! Also, the trivia game at the end was fun, so pay attention to your guides!

tour st croix virgin islands

Craig and his team greeted all the guests warmly and then explained what we were going to be doing in the bio-bay. Then we all boarded our kayak and paddled away through the waves to the bay. Jake , the lead guide, was super friendly and knowledgeable about our experience we were taking on. He is professional and passionate about the preservation of the bay. We all learned the why of maintaining the area as it provides purpose to our entire ecosystem.

Absolutely do this!!!! Such a magical experience! My kids (11 and 12) loved this! I was happy we went with the sea through kayaks. Favorite part of our trip to the Virgin Islands!

We took our friends on the bioluminescent tour last night. None of us had ever experienced anything like it. Brett and Jake, our guides, were fantastic. They were super chill and knowledgeable. They clearly love what they do and their passion for the bay makes the trip even more enjoyable. They had us play trivia at the end of the evening to see if people recalled what they taught us. Clearly people were listening as it was a competitive game and so much fun.... The bioluminescence of the bay was completely mind blowing. I can't explain how magical it is. This is an incredible planet we live on. It is hard to believe places like this exist. Sea Thru Kayaks is a great steward of the bay. We can't wait to go again!

Had a great time with Jake for both the daytime Eco-tour and nighttime bioluminescent bay tour. Definitely highlights of our trip!!

What is Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is the emission of light created by a living organism. In the Salt River Bio Bay, you will experience the light-emitting phenomenon of the single-celled microorganisms called dinoflagellates. As the water is agitated by the passing of your transparent kayak, it will seem as if your entire boat is surrounded by glowing light.  Depending upon conditions, the bioluminescence may appear as a cloud of pixie dust, or a starry galaxy racing beneath you!

We arrived at the airport in St. Croix (STX) at 1:30 pm.

We rented an SUV from Centerline Car Rental. The check-in process was seamless, and we picked up the car on-site at the airport. We drove for about 25 minutes to our villa rental. Once we arrived, we dropped off our suitcases and headed to the local grocery store.

4 pm: Grocery run at Plaza West.

Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner: Today was a travel day, so breakfast/lunch was eaten at the airport/plane. We ate at the villa for dinner.

Overnight: The Pearl . The villa was perched on the cliffs, so every night we were lulled to sleep listening to the crashing waves. We loved our rental and will stay here on future trips to St. Croix.

1:30 pm: After our morning adventure, we elected to make our own cocktails and relax in our private pool for the afternoon.

Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner: At the villa

Overnight: The Pearl

1:45 pm: Visit Point Udall, which is marked by a giant sundial known as the Millenium Monument.

2 pm: We checked out another tide pool called Monks Bath. Interesting but not as spectacular as Annaly Bay Tide Pools.

Breakfast/Dinner: At the villa

1 pm Lunch: Rhythms at Rainbow Beach. This beachfront restaurant is the “Original Home of the Lima-N-Da-Coconut” tropical drink. We had a few of these and also enjoyed some delicious, fresh Mahi tacos.

4 pm: Martinis by the pool. FYI: St. Croix is home to Sion Farm Distillery , which produces the local Mutiny Island Vodka made from breadfruit. You can visit the distillery for a tasting or buy it at the local grocery store.

9:30 am: We snorkeled at the beautiful Cane Bay. We saw turtles and schools of fish. You can also dive “The Wall,” a vertical steep cliff.

11 am: We drove through the rainforest to see the beer (nonalcoholic) drinking pigs. Unfortunately, they were closed when we went.

11:45 am: Next we checked out Sandy Point Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

12:30 pm: Next stop was snorkeling at Sand Castle, where we saw some beautiful brightly colored starfish and many tropical fish.

2 pm Lunch: La Reine Chicken Shack. Best BBQ chicken ever!

11:30 am: Once we arrived at Isaac Bay, we decided to cool off and go snorkeling. We saw some tropical fish and even a lobster.

2:30 pm: We checked out the colorful town of Christiansted and had some ice cream at What’s Da Scoop.

We slept in, had a late breakfast, and got one last swim in. A rainbow appeared before we had to drive off at 12 pm. Incredible! It was so hard to leave!

3:35 pm: Flight back home.

Breakfast: At the villa

12:30 pm Snack: We swung by Thomas Bakery for some local coconut sweets and then headed to the airport.

  • Beach lovers
  • Snorkeling & hiking enthusiasts
  • Foodies (St. Croix definitely has a great food culture)
  • Avoid hurricane season from June-November. If you go during that time, buy travel insurance.
  • April and May are ideal due to better temperatures, little rainfall, and slightly fewer crowds.
  • December – March is also a nice time to visit, but it is peak season so prices will be higher. Also, “Christmas winds”  occur during this time which can make snorkeling difficult or impossible.
  • The Pearl (7 nights)

American Airlines

  • We had a layover in Miami both ways. Total flight times from the east coast + layovers were about 6-7 hours.

Amex Centurion Lounge Miami

  • Beautiful lounge but crowded!

St. Croix is large and spread out. I would highly advise renting a car.

We used Centerline Car rental. I highly recommend them.

  • Buck Island Tour
  • None. All of the restaurants we chose did not require reservations.
  • We went during the pandemic at Christmas, and a lot of the food establishments we wanted to visit were either closed or had reduced hours. Places on our list to check out when we go back are Ital in Paradise, Savant, AMA at Cane Bay, 40 Eats & Drinks, Nidulari (food truck in the rainforest), and Singh’s Fast Food for local food.
  • Cruzan Rum Distillery was closed when we went, but I would have loved to have done a tour and a tasting. Instead, we settled for buying bottles of rum at the grocery store and did our own rum tasting back at the villa rental.

Katie

We are going to StX this coming week and are so excited! Your blog is the best organized, most clearly written, and illustrated that I’ve ever seen! Thank you for your advice. Question, do you use a light when snorkeling to get those colorful photos? (Like Fred. Pier)

Nichole

Thank you so much for the very kind feedback.

Great question. I don’t use a light, but there are three things you need to make those underwater photos pop.

1. You have to be close enough to the subject. 2. You need some natural light filtering in. For example, it’s really dark under Frederiksted Pier. Go on a day when it’s sunny. The light will come in at an angle which illuminates the pylons, where all the brightly-colored coral is growing. The coral is really that colorful! 3. The third trick is to have a dive filter . I use a GoPro for all of my underwater footage. I pop the filter on to help pick up those vibrant colors underwater.

Hope this helps! Happy to answer any other questions. Enjoy your trip!

  26. Should I Try St Croix?

We enjoyed the food tour in Csted at the beginning of our trip, and had a wonderful taste of the local food, and hospitality. We liked the difference in the rural feel of St. Croix, vs the more tourist oriented St John, however, I still dream of St John and the many easy shore snorkels and lovely beaches.
