Travel Guides

Your guide to saltwater fishing in florida, love saltwater fishing whether you prefer to fish from a boat or a pier, for gamefish or dinner, florida saltwater fishing has what you're looking for.  .

When it comes to designing the ultimate saltwater fishing destination, Florida serves as the ultimate blueprint. Why so? Because its geography offers access to the Gulf Stream, reefs, wrecks, estuaries, bays, inlets and rivers. Added together they afford the chance to fish for everything from bonefish to billfish - all in the same day if desired.

Here's a rundown of these popular angling haunts for Florida saltwater fishing and successful techniques for what you might encounter.

Gulf Stream

It's deep, it's blue, and it's full of large game fish that can turn the shape of a rod into a pretzel. Here lurk awesome battlers such as blue marlin, wahoo, sailfish, dolphin, kingfish, swordfish, yellowfin and blackfin tuna, and sharks longer than the width of some boats. Trolling lures and baits is the best bet, although offshore fly fishing has increased in popularity.

It's amazing how a fat snook or redfish can traverse shallow waters about the length of your hand, but best results occur in water two feet or less in depth, particularly with sea grasses and bottom contours and sediments conducive to homesteading by crabs, shrimps and other fish munchies. Wading is popular (taking care to slide your feet to ward off stingrays), as is casting from shorelines. The ultimate challenge is sight-fishing from a boat being silently poled by a guide. Unsurpassed flats fishing is the hallmark of the  Florida Keys .

Being relatively shallow and easier on the kidneys than fishing offshore, bay waters teem with a hodgepodge of game fish favorites. Take a variety of rods and reels - light, medium and heavy - to aptly duel with whatever slurps up your bait or make-believe morsel. Some of the fishier hot spots are  Biscayne Bay, Florida Bay, Whitewater Bay, Chokoloskee Bay, Ponce de Leon Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Tampa Bay,   Homosassa Bay, Waccasassa Bay, Apalachee Bay, West and East bays (Panama City)  and  Pensacola Bay .

Look for concrete or rocky jetties that line both sides of a choice spot such as Sebastian Inlet. Many inlets are angler-friendly, providing access and facilities. Jockey to find a good casting stage for shots at tarpon, snook, redfish, jacks and mackerel that congregate during tidal changes. Free-line a floating live crab or shrimp with the current or cast a lead-head jig or lure up-current and work it back to you.

Night fishing is best, especially on a full-moon phase. Cast a jig tipped with a shrimp up-current and hop it back to the piling. You'll lose a few rigs in the rocks but you'll also catch more snook and tarpon than anyone else. Many of the Keys bridges are perfect for this, as well as the Sunshine Skyway off Tampa. Some bridges offer catwalks and other facilities. Some bridges do not allow fishing, so follow posted regulations.

No boat? No problem. Just walk to deeper water. Pier anglers regularly catch Spanish mackerel, snook, tarpon, sheepshead, redfish, trout and other stars of the fishing world. Pilings themselves serve as an attractant, and lights shown in the water at night become fish magnets. Excellent  pier fishing  can be found in Broward and Miami-Dade counties as well as in the Panhandle.

Islands, beaches and even rocky coastal areas can be fished with good results. Move along quietly as fish can hear the slightest noises or even see you. Either soak a bait on the bottom or cast parallel to the beach to tempt snook or reds hunting the troughs for chewables.

Mangrove shorelines and overhanging trees provide fish with a respite from direct sunlight. Drift along promising banks and cast the edges of the shoreline and near dead tree limbs, stumps and other obstructions. Anchor at a promising spot and cast up-current to work your offering past target points. Any of these places and techniques for tangling with game fish will produce successful Florida saltwater fishing trips. Be a part of the fun, but remember to keep only the fish you'll eat that night and release the rest. That will help ensure a healthy fishery in the future for both you and your children.

florida saltwater fishing trips

Charlotte Harbor is the second-largest estuary in Florida and home to prolific species of game fish.  The grass flats and back country are sought after by all anglers for it's fishing year round.  Tarpon, Snook, Redfish and Sharks are among the most commonly targeted species.  Other species commonly caught include: Trout, Tripletail, Black Drum, Mackerel, Sheepshead and Cobia.  The harbor has at least 279 documented species and it boasts almost 300 square miles of mangrove lined shoreline with hundreds of islands.  It includes almost 300 miles of man made canals, and thousands of acres of shallow grass flats.

Snook

The world famous Boca Grande pass is most notable for it's world class Tarpon fishing.  Every spring, thousands of hungry Tarpon embark on their annual migration to make their yearly spawn.  The Charlotte Harbor is fed from the north by two rivers; the Peace River and the Myakka River.  All of this water leads out to the Gulf of Mexico through the Boca Grande Pass.  This geographical anomaly presents a perfect gathering spot for the massive schools of big Tarpon.  Boca Grande is labeled the "Tarpon Capital of the world"   Anglers from around the world come to this area to test their skills and patience against the 'SILVER KING'.  An amazing experience for any angler, beginner or advanced.  Given the challenge at hand, a professional guide is more than recommended for a successful day on these waters.

Unforgettable Day Offshore

Fishing in Daytona Beach

Capt. Scott is a USCG licensed 100 Ton Master Captain and has been fishing and diving the waters out of Ponce Inlet for over 25 years. Capt. Scott has competed in numerous offshore fishing tournaments, winning the Inaugural Fish Stock tournament in 2003 (formally the Striker). My father and grandfather first took me fishing when I was 5 years old. Over the years I have developed a passion and appreciation for the ocean and all the wonders it has to offer. I have caught monster fish, swam with wild dolphins, turtles, sharks and majestic Manta Rays, but most importantly I have experiences and memories that will never be forgotten. Allow me to share my passion with you, your family and friends and help you create the memories that will last a life time. Captain Scott is the owner and operator. Captain Scott is a tournament-winning fisherman, who has been fishing these waters since 1989, and has his 100-ton USCG Captain’s License. Capt. Scott spends several days each week spear fishing, he can see firsthand where the fish are and what various bottom structures actually look like. He also maintains good relationships with other commercial fishermen and captains which provides an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and notes on recent fishing patterns. If you are serious about fishing or would like to introduce your family to a new experience, please give us a call. We look forward to helping you make the memories of a life time. I started fishing when I was 5 years old. In 1989 I moved to Central Florida to attend Stetson University, became a certified scuba diver, and have been diving and fishing out of Ponce Inlet ever since. Although I have landed plenty of monsters, I now find more enjoyment helping others experience the thrill of landing the fish of a lifetime. Read More

Fishing in the Sunshine State

Florida is known as the “Fishing Capital of the World,” and for good reason: with some of the best sport fishing year round in the Gulf of Mexico, incredible access to the continental shelf along the Atlantic Coast, and over 30,000+ lakes, Florida houses the most diverse set of species and the best fishing in the United States. We can’t say it enough, Florida fishing is where it’s at all year round. While some migratory species (like billfish) will still have peak and ebb seasons, you will find fun on the water no matter when you visit.

Fishing Florida's Coasts

**Florida Inshore Fishing** Inshore fishing in Florida includes everything within one nautical mile along either the Gulf or Atlantic coast. This will give you access to estuaries, bays, intercoastal waterways, and saltwater flats all along both coasts. The diversity of bays and flats across Florida make it a world-class inshore fishery. Beginners and experts alike flock here for everything from a family friendly redfish outing in the bay to a chance at a permit on the fly. **Florida Nearshore Fishing** Nearshore fishing in Florida will take you out to deeper waters with bigger fish, but remaining within sight of the coast. These warm waters are some of the best Florida has to offer where fish of all sizes can be found among the wrecks and reefs. Staying nearshore will reduce the travel time and increase the time you can spend fishing. Florida’s state waters are a great spot to bottom fish for snapper and grouper, fish the surf for pompano, and even troll for spanish mackerel, kingfish, cobia and more. **Florida Offshore Fishing** Heading offshore in Florida takes you into the deep blue, federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, or the Atlantic Ocean depending on which coast you’re on. If you’re staying in the Keys, you’ll even have access to both, making Florida very unique. Commonly, good fishing begins anywhere from 20 to 30 miles away from the coast. The blue waters of Florida are some of the best places to be able to catch a multitude of trophy fish migrating through such as tuna and sailfish, as well as other seasonal fish like mahi-mahi.

Top Saltwater Catches in Florida

**Inshore Target Species in Florida** **Snook Fishing in Florida** The warm coastal waters of Florida provide the perfect fishing for snook as they prefer water above 60 degrees. They can be found cruising the saltwater flats, patrolling rivers, and even right off the beach or under bridges. **Tarpon Fishing in Florida** The silver kings of the sea, tarpon, are a prehistoric fish that have been around for 125 million years, and now reside in the warm waters of Florida's shoreline. These beautiful, metallic fish are known for being stubborn, strong, and highly acrobatic, and will test any angler’s skills. **Bonefish Fishing in Florida** Bonefish, or gray ghosts, are elusive fish that are highly regarded by anglers in their difficulty to catch. Florida, especially the Keys, are one of the most renowned locations to fish for them, as they cruise the flats at up to 40 mph. **And more!** Florida’s coasts are full of a diverse range of fish, giving you access to permit, pompano, mangrove snapper, and more. **Nearshore Target Species in Florida** **Grouper Fishing in Florida** There are several species of grouper that live in Florida, including the black and gag groupers. They are stocky, stubborn, and often territorial. Florida water’s are a perfect environment for them to hide amongst rocks, reefs, and wrecks waiting for some bait to drop by. **Snapper Fishing in Florida** Red snapper, vermillion snapper, lane snapper, yellowtail snapper, if you want snapper, Florida has them. With over 12 species of snapper around the state, there are plenty to choose from. Although they can often be found among the reefs and wrecks in statewater, different species will travel both inshore and offshore, so if there’s a particular species you’re seeking, it’s important to check where they’ll be at that time of year. **Tripletail Fishing in Florida** Tripletail can be found in great numbers in the nearshore waters of Florida gathering around free floating masses in the water such as grass mats and even trash. This makes them great for sight casting, and will put up an acrobatic fight full of long runs. **And more!** Although these three make up the nearshore grand slam for Florida, there are some other great fish to be found along the reefs and wrecks like Spanish mackerel, kingfish, cobia, and more. **Offshore Target Species in Florida** **Mahi Mahi Fishing in Florida** Mahi mahi literally means “strong strong” and when you get hooked on a line with one, you’ll discover that first hand. In the late spring and summer months, Florida is the place to find these dolphinfish, dophin, dorado, whatever you want to call them, you’ll find them. **Sailfish Fishing in Florida** The cheetahs of the ocean, sailfish, are a highly prized target for trophy fishing in Florida. Atlantic sailfish can be found cruising the deep waters as they migrate along the Gulf and Atlantic coast November through February, and sometimes even as late as April. **Wahoo Fishing in Florida** Wahoo are fierce predators, favored by anglers for their leap, jumping clear out of the water when on the line. They are even known to make last minute attacks on lures right at the edge of the boat. Wahoo can be found around the coasts of Florida year round, but are best in the summer months. It is rumored that they thrive after a full moon, giving you the chance to say you really caught a monster. **And more!** Catching these three big guys will give you the title of the Florida deep water grand slam, but there’s plenty more to catch out there. From amberjack, tuna, and more there’s plenty of water to search and big fish to be found. **Top Freshwater Catches in Florida** **Peacock Bass** The lakes and canal banks of Florida are one of the few places that give you access to some exotic freshwater fish like peacock bass and clown knifefish. These bucket list fish are prime at dusk and dawn, and will give you a chance to see their golden halos shine in the sunshine. **Hybrid Striped Bass** Hybrid striped bass, or stripers, are another bucket list fish that have been stocked in freshwater lakes and rivers across Florida. They can be found in deep water of the lakes, and cruising river channels throughout the day, depending on the time of year, and are a finicky fish but well worth the reward. **Largemouth Bass** Largemouth bass are an iconic freshwater fish of the United States, and are known to Floridians as the “Florida bass.” They don’t claim these bass as their own for no reason, Florida is home to some excellent largemouth fishing, and tend to be much larger than their northern brothers.

Best Places to Fish Florida’s Saltwater

**The Emerald Coast** **Destin** Some of the best fishing to be done in the world is in the Panhandle of Florida, and Destin is the perfect location to seek it. Originally founded by fishermen, Destin is known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” due to having a wide selection of fish variety, access directly to the Gulf of Mexico, and having one of the nation’s largest commercial fishing fleets. The “100-fathom curve” is just 12 miles offshore, which is some of the deepest of the Gulf. With year round fishing for snapper, shark, tarpon and more Destin offers everything from inshore fishing to offshore, as well as plenty of tourism activities to enjoy if you can get yourself off the water long enough. **Pensacola & Pensacola Beach** Pensacola and Pensacola Beach (PCB), are known for excellent reef fishing, with both natural and artificial reefs providing the area with plenty of grouper, snapper, triggerfish, sharks, and more. In fact, it was once known as the “Red Snapper Capital of the World,” only now beaten by Orange Beach, AL. With access to the river channel, three bays, and the Gulf of Mexico, there are many different ecosystems to explore inshore, nearshore, and offshore fishing. **The Gulf Coast** **Tampa** The Tampa area has hot summers and moderate winters, making for excellent weather with a year-round bite. From half-day Tampa flats fishing, to multi-day deep sea trips, and everything in between there’s plenty of fishing to be done once you escape the crowds of the theme parks. **St. Petersburg & Clearwater** St. Petersburg is considered to have a medley of fertile flats, mangrove-lined shores, canals, and barrier islands that provide excellent inshore fishing. Further to Clearwater adds all of these and shallow bayous. When you combine this amazing inshore fishing, to the area’s access to the Gulf and remote reefs, a prime fishing spot is created. Sarasota With access to Sarasota Bay, full of grass flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines, as well as Big Sarasota Pass and New Pass that lead to the Gulf of Mexico, there are a variety of fish to be caught in Sarasota. The mix of salt and freshwater creates an estuary that is prime for both bait and gamefish to flourish. **Fort Myers** Way down yonder on the Caloosahatchee, the prime inshore waters of Fort Myers can be found, with just a short boat ride to the Gulf of Mexico. With the Caloosahatchee River, Estero Bay, miles and miles of canals and intertidal creeks, combined with great weather, there are some excellent fisheries to catch tarpon, snook, shark and more. **Florida Keys** **Islamorada** Islamorada is about one third of the way down the Keys, and is considered the “Fishing Capital of Florida.” Being next to Florida Bay, as well as having access to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean gives anglers in Islamorada the advantage of being able to fish nearly every species that swims. The Gulf Stream is also only around 10 to 20 miles offshore, bringing sailfish, marlin, tuna and more closer to shore. **Key West** The Gulf Stream also travels close to Key West, making deep-sea fishing easily accessible from there as well. However what’s really special about Key West is the gathering of Atlantic tarpon, the silver kings. When waters warm during the late spring, tarpon will make their yearly migratory stop. This is the perfect time to get the Key West grand slam - tarpon, bonefish, and permit. **Key Largo** Key Largo is a great place to fish because it is a great place for fish. This is because warm, nutrient-rich water from the Caribbean Basin, mix with water flowing from the Everglades and Florida Bay. Key Largo is also the unofficial entrance to the keys, being only an hour away from Miami, making it an easy fishing destination to go to. **Marathon** The ability to go fishing year round in Marathon is just one of the reasons that fishing there is so popular. With beautiful, warm weather year round the fish are always biting. The other big draw is the ease of fishing in so many different environments. From fishing flats for tarpon and bonefish, to heading offshore for everything from mahi-mahi to sailfish, Marathon has it all. **Gold Coast** **Miami** Usually when people first think of Miami they think of the big city with high-rise condos and a booming nightlife, however just a short boat ride away there’s an escape from the busy city into the blue waters of the Atlantic coast fisheries. Between Biscayne Bay and the Bahamas only an hour away, there’s plenty of fishing to be done inshore and among the reefs offshore. Spend the day in the bays and flats for snook and redfish, or head out to catch the current sailfish cruise. **Fort Lauderdale** Fort Lauderdale is a special spot for fishing because within a 20 minute drive, you can fish both fresh and saltwater. The Atlantic waters surrounding Fort Lauderdale are teeming with life, and heading right off the beach or Hollywood Boardwalk into the crystal waters to do some inshore fishing snook or tarpon, or offshore for some billfish is the perfect place to start. **West Palm Beach** There is great fishing both inshore and offshore in West Palm Beach, however one of the biggest highlights is the direct access to Sailfish Alley. Sailfish Alley is a submerged canyon where billfish cruise right by West Palm Beach and is the best hotspot to hit to target your trophy. Mahi, wahoo, and more can also be found here and in the surrounding waters, making your day sure to be action packed. **Space Coast** **Cocoa Beach** Cocoa Beach has great fishing in the Intercoastal Waterways and deep water for kingfish, marlin, and more, however the real gem is the access to Indian River Lagoon System. This system is made up of the Banana, Indian, and Mosquito Rivers and are prime for targeting many inshore species, but especially redfish. It is also right on the northernmost border of the snook population. **Riviera Beach** Whether you’d like to deep drop along the reefs and wrecks, or go kite fishing for trophy billfish, Riviera Beach is the place to go. It is a sport fisherman’s paradise for targeting big fish like tuna, sailfish, and more. **Melbourne Beach** Melbourne Beach is one of the world’s premier locations for surf fishing. While relaxing with your toes in the sand, you can wet your line and have direct access to snook, pompano, shark, and more. With over 15 miles of pristine beach, there’s plenty of space to find the perfect spot and catch your next personal best. **Palm Beach** Palm Beach has excellent inshore fishing for snook, tarpon, and more, but what makes it special is also its namesake. Palm Beach is named after the Providencia, a ship that wrecked with over 20,000 coconuts that washed ashore and grew into palms. That wreck, along with other sunken boats, reefs, and rocks make it an excellent place to fish for amberjack, barracuda, and more.

Best Places to Fish Florida’s Freshwaters

**Fort Lauderdale** Although Fort Lauderdale is known for their sailfish fishing, it also provides access to a plethora of lakes and waterways of the Everglades and more full of bass, including the exotics. Whether you’re after a giant Florida largemouth, or the opportunity to make memories, Fort Lauderdale has it all. **Delray Beach** Nestled on the Southeast side of Florida between Miami and West Palm Beach, Delray Beach offers saltwater and freshwater fishing. On Lake Ida and the surrounding brackish canals, exotics , largemouth, panfish, and more are just waiting to be caught. All of these combined provide a unique fishing experience only to be found in Delray Beach. **Lake Okeechobee** Lake Okeechobee is a world-famous bass fishery covering 448,000 surface acres of water holding some monster largemouth bass. With plenty of vegetation and structure, species like bluegill, catfish, sunfish and more can thrive.

TESTIMONIALS

What they say about us

We had great weather , a great Captain and first mate. We caught over 5 species and brought about 25 fish to the dock. We also threw back about 30 Grunts which were great eating. Then, we went to the Salt Cracker restaurant where they prepared our fish for us . We chose blackened and fried along with cole slaw and fries. What a great experience for a Father & Son.

We took an 8 hour trip with Captain Kevin and first mate Peyton this week and it was unbelievable. They were so attentive, friendly and helpful along with constantly having us on fish! We caught well over 120 fish with 3 people. I could not recommend them more. They’re extremely hardworking and all over every request. For an amazing fishing experience, book Kevin & Peyton. You will be thrilled! By the way, have their restaurant Saltcracker Fish Camp cook your catch for dinner. It was great!

Established in 1992,

Saltwater Outlaw Charters (SOC) offers premium fishing trips out of Cedar Key, Florida. We fish on the beautiful inshore flats and in the back country areas primarily for redfish and trout. However, numerous species are often caught (seasonally) such as cobia, mackerel, shark, sheepshead, snook, tarpon, black drum, flounder, and tripletail.

We fish aboard a 2018 MicroDraft Extreme 20. All equipment is provided (including fishing licenses).  While inshore trips tend to stay relatively close to 'home', sometimes the Capt. will venture to areas east deep into Waccasassa Bay and north to the famous Suwannee River.

Children and families are absolutely welcome. The Capt is known to give quite the science lessons concerning fish, birds, other wildlife and the outdoors in general.

We are pet friendly

Beginner’s Guide to Florida Saltwater Fishing

Learning how to fish florida saltwater.

Florida Saltwater Fishing snapper

Saltwater fishing in Florida may be the number one sport in the Sunshine State. The Beginner’s Guide to Florida Saltwater Fishing answers many of the novice questions like;

Do seniors need a fishing license in Florida?

  • What is the best way to learn about Florida saltwater fishing?
  • What is the best live bait for saltwater fishing in Florida?
  • What are the Florida saltwater fish limits?

Author’s Note;

I came to Florida over 40 years ago as a cocky freshwater fisherman. I thought I knew fishing! Living on one of the top fishing lakes in Ohio, I thought saltwater fishing couldn’t be much different. If you resemble this “fishing know-it-all” person, get ready for some kindergarten lessons! Lesson number one. Don’t try one of your cherished bass rods on a Florida reef!

With over 1 million registered boats, Florida leads the nation for recreation on the water. According to the University of Florida , recreational fishing brings over 8 billion dollars annually to Florida’s economy. With 1000 people per day becoming Florida residents, we feel certain the Beginner’s Guide to Florida Saltwater Fishing will help some of our newest residents.

guide to florida saltwater fishing estuary

The quick answer to that question is maybe not. If you are under 16 and 65 and over you do not need a Florida fishing license if you can prove residency .

Fishing laws are like many others, they can be complicated.

Do you need both a Florida saltwater AND freshwater fishing license?

Again, the answer is maybe. If you are 16 and under 65, with no other exemptions, you may need both. For instance, if you are fishing an estuary that has both saltwater and freshwater fish, you need both licenses.

For complete Florida fishing license information, visit this website for details. You can also purchase a license online here .

What are the differences between freshwater and saltwater fishing in Florida?

Simply stated, the fish and methods to catch them are vastly different.

Florida freshwater fishing is very much like fishing a river or lake anywhere in the United States. Bass, bluegill, crappie (specs) and catfish are found commonly in Florida. In particular, Florida produces as many 10-pound bass as any state in the country.

Florida saltwater fishing punta gorda

Saltwater fishing in Florida differs primarily because of the different types of fish . When freshwater fishing, you know there may be a half dozen species of fish you could catch on any given trip. Your average catch, depending on what you target, may be measured in ounces to a few pounds.

things you need when flying

Saltwater Game Fish Differ Greatly From Freshwater Fish

There are over 20,000 different types of saltwater fish around the world. Several thousand saltwater species exist in and around Florida. As a comparison, freshwater species number somewhere just above 220 documented by the  University of Florida .

On a Florida saltwater fishing trip, despite what you are targeting, you have the opportunity and likelihood to catch a dozen different species any given day. Your average catch when Florida saltwater fishing may be measured in pounds to hundreds of pounds!

Beginner's guide to Florida saltwater fishing cobia

Personal examples include;

  • Catching a 30-pound cobia after a 30-minute battle on light tackle while fishing for 12-15 inch mangrove snapper.
  • Catching a 40-pound wahoo while targeting 4-6 pound Spanish mackerel. Wahoo are the fastest fish in the Gulf . Talk about being able to spool you in about 3 minutes!
  • It’s common to catch large 30-plus pound amberjack, tuna, and king mackerel while grouper fishing as the bait is moving through the water column.

I won’t even mention the number of times a shark has produced some fun and chaos while fishing both inshore and offshore.

Sharks can range from 24-inch bonnethead sharks to several hundred-pound bull sharks.

My point here is that being prepared is a key element of Florida saltwater fishing. Rigging, rods, reels, and equipment are much different.

How do you learn about Florida saltwater fishing?

There are two basic ways to learn to fish for saltwater species.

  • Be a cocky freshwater fisherman like me and try to tuff it out learning on your own. This is a good way to lose a lot of fish, embarrass yourself and guests onboard your boat, and spend a lot of money on equipment unnecessarily.

You can also spend a lot of money on fuel trying to find fish, bait, and active water.

  • Be smart. Hire a charter captain or guide to teach you the basics. I have yet to meet a good boat captain that was unwilling to teach you some basic techniques.

Your guide is NOT going to give you his “numbers”, but he will teach you to find your own. (Numbers are exact GPS coordinates of fishing spots. When I first started fishing GPS wasn’t around. We used LORAN numbers which were not as accurate.)

Rules for Charter Boat Florida Saltwater Fishing

While our thoughts are to hire a charter captain to learn to fish, there are some written and unwritten guidelines when you charter.

  • The Captain is always in charge. You may be paying, but for your safety and trip quality, the Captain rules.
  • You may want to fish for a certain fish. That is fine if the Captain agrees in advance. Otherwise, let your guide determine what is biting and what is fun to catch.
  • You need not bring anything but your food and drinks. Don’t expect the Captain to feed you. It is common, but not required, for you to bring enough food for the Captain and mate if you are eating.
  • Consuming alcohol is generally OK with most Captains. However, limit consumption for your safety.
  • Tipping is anticipated. My rule is to tip a total of 20% to Captain and mate. Split it 50-50 or however you choose.

Finding a Great Charter Captain for Florida Saltwater Fishing

Finding a good charter captain may not be as easy as ads would let you believe. In every area, you will find many specialists.

For instance, you have inshore captains and offshore captains. Then you have offshore guys who are experts at bottom fishing. Others are great trolling guides.

Then you have some guys that are species experts. For instance, in the Florida Keys , you have just a handful of captains that target swordfish at night. Others look for bonefish inshore on the flats. mainly by sight fishing.

There are charter guides that only do live bait fishing and others that only do artificial bait fishing. Even specialists for fly fishing in saltwater.

Beginner's Guide to Florida Saltwater fishing Boca Grande

If all that is not complicated enough, you have area captains that specialize in annual fish runs. Captains in Boca Grande target tarpon in the annual spring run.

There are guides that love to fish tournaments like king mackerel tournaments up and down the Gulf Coast of Florida. Other captains love grouper-digging tournaments.

The bottom line, learn from a professional. It just makes economic sense and saves you a ton of frustration. If you want help finding a good charter captain in a specific area, send us an email .

What is The Best Live Bait for Florida Saltwater Fishing

guide to florida saltwater fishing marina in islamorada

The answer to that question is simple. What are the fish eating?

Sometimes, like king mackerel season, whatever is shiny they eat. Other times the same fish may only eat cigar minnows, or it could be ballyhoo, or some days blue runners are the best.

Grouper always seem to like pinfish but I have seen cut bait outperform live bait. Redfish inshore will like threadfin herring most of the time but if there is a recent shrimp hatch, they will devour that live shrimp.

Many times, tuna are caught in the bycatch of offshore shrimp boats. Mahi (dolphin fish) will sometimes eat anything that moves, but other times they are looking for whatever bait fish is schooling offshore.

The best live bait for saltwater can be dependent on the time of year, water clarity, temperature, tides and location. There is no one-bait-fits-all solution. The more options you have onboard, the better your chances.

What Are The Florida Saltwater Fishing Limits

Florida saltwater fish jet ski

Warning! The answer to the question is fish limits are ever-changing. It is a moving target to try to keep up with both Florida and federal guidelines . They change bag limits, size limitations, and dates that you are allowed to fish a specific species at least annually.

There are around 4 dozen different types of fish that are regulated. Our recommendation is to keep abreast of these regulations quarterly.

As a general rule, these common fish have limitations.

All types of grouper and snapper. Cobia, amberjack, snook, all billfish, redfish, trout, bluefish and even some baits used for fishing.

More Resources to Learn Florida Saltwater Fishing

Florida saltwater fishing lures

One magazine that was a great help to me was the Florida Sportsman magazine. The hard copy of the magazine and the online version are fun resources. They can also help with rigging techniques and equipment reviews.

Fishing clubs are all over the state. Fishermen are always friendly and willing to help “newbies” with the sport. For a fishing club near you, check out the Fish Explorer .

Many bait shops, sporting goods stores, and big retailers have seminars and demonstrations scheduled relating to fishing.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is a resource for regulations, places to fish, learning experiences, and general information about the sport.

My Most Embarrassing Moments While Florida Saltwater Fishing – Even After 40 Years of Learning

The most experienced fishermen, despite their preparation, seem to get surprised and embarrassed occasionally. Here are a few episodes.

  • While fishing near the Gulf Stream out of Key West , we had been catching dolphin fish (mahi). They had been hitting poppers on trolling rigs. We knew there was a chance for sailfish, so we were rigged for anything (we thought).

By mid-afternoon, we had several fish onboard and one of the outrigger lines snapped down. I could tell it was a decent fish, but one of the guys that had a little experience grabbed the pole and asked if the drag was set. I said yes and he said the fish was taking a lot of line. I was driving and wanted to keep moving to keep the other lines from getting tangled.

Soon it was clear the fish had no interest in being caught. The reel began to sound like the non-stop whine of a sewing machine.

I had everyone start reeling in the other lines. The speedster fish beat us up. I couldn’t back down and get the lines in before 400-500 yards of line was gone in a flash.

We never saw the fish but my guess was a big marlin that found being hooked as little more than a slight nuisance. I was too slow to react to the fish that spooled us. We didn’t have to lose that fish!

  • We were fishing a kingfish tournament out of Clearwater Beach, Florida. We were catching our share of kings but nothing tournament worthy. We had just rebaited a pole with a fresh blue runner when the king hit it as we deployed it. It was a large fish.

I was giving directions to everyone. Get all the lines in I shouted as the fish was giving us a big run. The guy on the pole was doing good. However, I coaxed him through fighting the fish for 15 minutes until we saw color.

As we brought the fish close to the boat, I could see he was barely hooked after the fight.

Florida saltwater fishing surf

I grabbed a brand new shiny stainless steel gaff I had bought just for a big kingfish like this. As the fish came within gaff range I made a perfect gaff just behind the gills in a fleshy part of the fish.

It was a perfect gaff – except for the part where the gaff slipped through my slippery hands. The fish, the gaff and my pride all vanished in 60 feet of water!

We were left with another “the big one that got away” story in a tournament.

  • We were fishing the Ten Thousand Islands of the Everglades . The estuary was active with redfish and snook. We were catching a few, despite having a new guy onboard. He was an expert bass fisherman and doing well with the reds and having fun with snook breaking the surface.

When freshwater fishing, if you want to slow a fish down that is taking line, you just put your thumb on the reel spool. No worries.

So our new guy hooks a shark about 6 feet long on the edge of the channel and off he goes. I yelled slow that damn thing down or he will spool us. He put his thumb on the reel and all I could smell was burning flesh.

He burnt his thumb so badly trying to slow down the shark that it was bleeding. I grabbed the rod and cut the line. I should have known he wouldn’t think about using the drag.

The bass fisherman had one sore thumb for weeks and one heck of a story to tell back home about “the big one that got away”.

  • Then there is the time fishing for Amberjack out of Key West with some friends. My wife catches the biggest one at 75 pounds. I wasn’t embarrassed then – just when she tells the story about who caught the largest fish in Key West .

My wife never went fishing again. She says she doesn’t need to after that! I don’t miss her on the boat. Afraid she might do it again! She continues to relish in recounting her story, only this is the one that didn’t get away!

Making Memories While Florida Saltwater Fishing

These bumps and bruises along the process of learning about Florida saltwater fishing were offset by the hundreds of memories that were one-of-a-kind great experiences. Another post may be in order for those thoughts.

Learning Florida saltwater fishing will put you into a class with some great people along the educational way. There isn’t a friendlier group or a more passionate group of people than saltwater fishermen and women. It’s a great sport.

Here at Salt Strong , we exist to teach the world how to fish…

We do this through weekly saltwater fishing tips , how-to videos on our popular Salt Strong YouTube Channel , our fishing blog , and even fishing trips.

florida saltwater fishing trips

But not the kind of fishing trips you might be thinking… I’m not talking about charters or taking people out on our boat.

I’m talking about blogs like this which reveal the best fishing trips, where to go, and what to look for.

In this blog post, we compiled 11 U.S Based ultimate bucket list saltwater fishing trips that every angler should shoot for in his or her lifetime.

How many of these places have you fished? Any cities or places you would add?

Let us know in the comments.

Note: The term Bucket List came from the movie, “The Bucket List,” where two terminally ill men played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman decided to go on a road trip to do all the things they wanted to do before they die. Hence, the term bucket list.

Here are the 11 Bucket List Saltwater Fishing Trips in America.

11. Virginia Beach, Virginia

virginia beach fishing

Virginia Beach doesn’t get the credit it deserves for saltwater fishing.

Why should it?

Because Virginia Beach it is located where the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, and other freshwater waterways all meet together, and the amount of different species that you can catch in a weekend of fishing Virginia Beach is staggering.

Marlin, tuna, cobia, bluefish, amberjack, and mahi all swim in and around the Virginia Beach area, accessible to most anglers. From fishing the boardwalk, to the beach, to offshore, Virginia Beach is a place that all anglers should fish at some point in their life.

10. San Diego, California

Not only does San Deigo have a well-known pier, but it is also home to all kinds of different saltwater species, even bonefish!

Because of its world-class yellowfin and bluefin tuna, San Deigo has been called the “Tuna Capital” of the west. Likewise, San Diego Bay rewards anglers with a haul of spotted bay bass, yellowtail, calico bass, halibut and even bonefish.

And while hitting up San Diego’s awesome piers or fishing from the beach, you can catch perch, corbina, leopard sharks, barracuda, bonito, and mackerel.

But the main attraction that put San Diego in the list is the ability to head offshore fishing for giant tuna. Don’t miss your chance to fish beautiful San Diego next time you are there.

9. Crystal River, Florida during scallop season

Every summer the area around Crystal River and Homosassa, Florida gets a surge of new visitors in search of taking home their share of scallops.

The water in the Crystal River area is incredibly clear, the scallops can be found in super shallow water (so even the kids can enjoy it), and it certainly is something every angler should enjoy and experience at least once.

Once you have your days limit of scallops, it’s also a blast to head over to the natural springs and do some diving and exploring. A really neat area indeed.

And if you really want a unique scalloping experience while “going back in time” in terms of an old Florida town, go visit  Steinahactchee during summer. Another “bucket list” place in Florida for sure.

8. Galveston, Texas

Galveston Bay, known to produce extra large kingfish and red snapper, is also an abundant source of redfish, speckled trout, sheepshead, black drum, and flounder, to name a few. And because of the unique beach/fishing feel that Galveston has, it made it a no-brainer to get this unique Texas town on the list.

And if you want to leave the inshore fishing and hit offshore for a day, the neighboring Gulf waters offer anglers a plethora of world-class sailfish, king mackerel, cobia, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, dolphin and marlin.

If you want to book a charter, make reservations and get ready to depart from either Galveston Yacht Basin, Pelican Rest Marina, Pirate’s Beach Marina, Kemah or in Seabrook.

7. South Florida During “The Mullet Run”

If you visit places like Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, or Miami, you will be amazed by the marinas, the amazing boats, the megayachts, and the annoying water taxis… But the biggest amazement in South Florida is seeing the famous “Mullet Run” come through in the fall for the first time.

As mullet make their way through Ft. Lauderdale on their migration, it attracts game fish in from all over the place. Tarpon and snook are everywhere from the beach to piers to under the bridges running through intercoastal and downtown.

It is like Mardis Gras for sport fish!

And it truly is a sight to see (and fish).

Click here to see some of the most amazing Mullet Run footage ever caught on film!

6. Outer Banks, North Carolina

The “Outer Banks” in North Carolina is known for being one of America’s abundant saltwater fisheries.

From catching marlin off of Cape Hatteras to landing world-record redfish just off the shore, North Carolina’s outer banks are a must fish place for all anglers.

The outer banks act like a highway for fish moving up and down the east coast, from wahoo, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, and red drum. They can all be caught here.

One of the best time to visit is between April to June and also in the fall.

5. Cape Cod, Massachusettes

Cape Code, Massachusettes is a historic place (the Mayflower landed here for crying out load), and it is a sanctuary for migratory stripers in the Provincetown, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Buzzards Bay.

But besides the MONSTA stripers, Cape Cod has are wahoo, swordfish, cod, bluefish, and giant bluefin tuna.  During May to June, there are many

Everyone needs to fish (and visit) Cape Cod at one point in their life.

4. Montauk, New York

This place is famous for being one of the fishing capitals of the world (and probably some of the most intense surf fishing addicts in the country).

Year after year, crazy amounts of fish migrate from Long Island Sound to Maine, passing by Montauk on their way.

And although many people think striped bass when they hear Montauk, but Montauk it is also popular for deep-water trophies like big tuna.

3. Homer, Alaska for Halibut

What do you when you get tired of catching mid-size flounder or fluke?

You step up your game and go after monster halibut!

With these “flat-fish” getting up into the 400lb+ range, even the “small halibut” in the 20-70 pound range (the Alaskans call them “Chicken-fish”) are pretty amazing fish to catch.

Two of the most popular places in Alaska (with easier access from Anchorage compared to the other halibut destination called “Dutch Harbor”) are Homer and Seward.

But Homer made the “bucket list” due to it’s eclectic, laid-back, and adventurous setting. The best times to visit Homer are beginning in May through the end of September. Any other time, and you will have a tough time feeling your fingers…

2. Venice, Louisiana

There are two world famous rivers that collide in one place… the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River Delta.

And at the end of the rivers is one of the best saltwater fishing the world has known… Venice, Louisiana.

Venice is home to everything from speckled trout, black drum, sheepshead, flounder, redfish, tuna, wahoo, marlin, and dolphin.

With amazing offshore canyon and an inshore fishery that is one of the best in the world, every angler needs to spend a week fishing Venice in his or her lifetime.

1. The Florida Keys, Florida

The Florida Keys is almost unarguably the best overall fishery on the planet.

There are so many hot spot fishing places inside of this scenic location like the Key West, Islamorada and Key Largo. The Florida Keys has converging currents, amazing tropical weather that can be fished year round, and crystal clear waters.

Whether it be fly fishing for world-class tarpon, going offshore for mahi, daytime swordfishing, or catching lobster, the Florida Keys has it all.

You can even shoot over to the Everglades for an afternoon to fish the unlimited mangrove lines.

What a place!

Mullet Run is REAL – beach and river fishing is amazing all down the FL coast, if you can find the main run you can fish it all down the coast and it’s incredible.

Crystal River – its actually the Gulf outside of Crystal River and it’s great fishing but very dangerous with lots of rocks and lots of flats so very shallow and you better know where your going.

Venice, LA – looks like it’s mostly off shore stuff as the whole delta and out flow from the rivers really muds up the coast

Fishing in The Everglades

Map of the Everglades

The Everglades covers one third of the southern Florida peninsula. Most of the area within the Everglades is a wild wet wilderness receiving 55 inches of rain annually. When we refer to the Everglades on this website we are referring to the rural areas outside of developed towns and cities.

Freshwater species in the Everglades include Largemouth Bass, Yellow Bullheads, Bluegills, Golden Shinners, Sunfish, and Florida gar. You can also find snook, tarpon, and other saltwater species that have adapted to brackish and freshwaters.

Saltwater species are abundant in the Everglades where land meets the Gulf of Mexico, Florida Bay, and the Atlantic.

What can we say, the weather in Florida is just beautiful, that's why we are called the "Sunshine State."

Florida weather varies depending on what part of the state you are in. As you can see from the Florida Plant Hardiness map, our weather is not the same through out the state.

The sun is out almost every day. We have two very distinct seasons - very dry arid winters averaging highs of 80 degrees in South Florida and 70 degrees in the north. Summers are very humid and rain comes most afternoons with averaging highs of 90 degrees, in northern Florida it can be less humid but still around 90 degrees. Don't let the summer rains stop you, they come through daily in the summer, usually after 2:00 PM, and are brief. You can see the storms coming, so always seek cover before they arrive, some storms can be very intense with lots of lightning. Jump to our Weather page for more information.

Sunset from my dock

Most spectators of this daily event look for the "Green Flash" which occurs just as the sun is disappearing on the horizon. I personally have never seen the green flash (could be my UV glass lens) but many have marveled at it's beauty.

Seasonal Population Differences

sunset through palm tree

Our two distinct seasons in Florida are winter and summer. Not only is the weather different, so are the crowds. During the summer, mostly locals inhabit the fishing areas. But once it gets cold up north, the "snow birds" arrive tripling our population and crowding our waterways. Snow Birds are, as we locals call them, either part time residents or vacationers that come to our area to escape the cold winters up north. Don't get me wrong, we love the snow birds, they are a very important economic necessity for our tourism based economy in Florida. But locals start counting a few weeks before Easter the car carriers arriving daily. We look forward to the serenity of summer.

During the winter you must plan ahead for lodging, boat rentals, charter, etc. Fishing spots in the winter can get crowded, but with the knowledge you gain from our website, you can count on a great fishing trip.

Outdoor Life

Couple on a torquoise color scooter very happy

For a change of pace, attend one of our numerous outdoor events, festivals, arts and crafts shows, museums, the zoo or the botanical gardens. For the golfer, we have the most golf courses in the entire country. Have a picnic in a park, go relax at the beach, go to a water park, go bird watching, or go look for alligators in the woods. The list of outdoor activities is endless.

Notice the pelican on the top of the flag pole?

This flag flies high above a fillet station used by charter boats behind a restaurant. No wonder the pelicans flock when the charters pull in.

  • Know the tides: The tides can have a big impact on saltwater fishing in Tampa Bay. High tides can push baitfish and gamefish into shallow waters, making them easier to target. Low tides can make certain areas difficult to access. Use a tide chart or fishing app to plan your trip around the tides.
  • Use live bait: Live bait, such as shrimp, pinfish, or scaled sardines, can be very effective when saltwater fishing in Tampa Bay. Be sure to use the right size and type of hook for your bait and target species.
  • Consider the time of day: The time of day can also have an impact on saltwater fishing in Tampa Bay. Early morning and late afternoon are often the best times to target gamefish, as they are more active during these times.
  • Be mindful of the weather: The weather can also impact saltwater fishing in Tampa Bay. Overcast or cloudy days can be good for fishing, as they can make gamefish more active. Windy days can make it difficult to cast and control your boat, while calm days can offer ideal conditions for fishing.
  • Use the right tackle: Using the right tackle is important for successful saltwater fishing in Tampa Bay. Be sure to use the right line weight, leader, and terminal tackle for your target species and the conditions you are fishing in.
  • Practice catch and release: Catch and release fishing can help preserve the fish populations in Tampa Bay. Be sure to handle the fish gently and release them quickly to minimize stress and increase their chances of survival.
