Tour 18 Houston

Parlaying the successes of the Dallas-area Tour 18, Houston's version of America's greatest holes has become one of Harris County's most popular golf destinations. This one takes advantage of the Southeast Texas pines, with towering trees lining every hole, and the impressive conditions that have made both Tour 18s popular with the public.

Two holes stand out on the front side, and they're not the replicas of Augusta's Amen Corner (5-7 on this track). No. 1 is perhaps the most difficult on the course, intimidating off the tee because it is surrounded by wetlands. You'll need a solid drive to start well on this narrow, 440-yard hole. Bay Hill, La Costa, Inverness, and Pinehurst are also modeled, but the other great hole on the front is No. 9, a version of TPC Sawgrass's island hole.

Texas' own Colonial's third hole makes a showing on No. 12, and you'll get to see what Pebble Beach might feel like on No. 13. And those who've played the Dallas track know that the crew can sometimes get diabolical with their stimp-meter readings and pin placements, which is similar to what happens on No. 15-a replica of Shinnecock Hills' 8th hole. The green on this one slopes so heavily toward the front that a three-jack is almost certain.

Doral rears its head on No. 18, the perfect finishing hole for this track. Play the approach to the right side of the green, away from the water left, just like the pros do when they're protecting that precious lead.

Getting there : From US 59 north, turn right on FM 1960 and drive east for about 2 miles to the course entrance.

THE HIGHLANDS BY CALDWELL COMPANIES

The highlands community in which this golf course is located, developed by award winning caldwell communities, offers 13 premier builders with 17 model homes open daily. the highland pines, developed by tour 18 inc., offers a social membership for residents of the highlands and a special resident initiation fee., to learn more about the highlands by caldwell communities visit thehighlands.com, the 1st  hole is a par 4.  the tee shot drops some 30’ from the ridge to the river basin.  the fairway sweeps right with the ideal shot favoring the right side, but not too much – you’ll want to avoid the bunkers & lake.  the green is guarded by a bunker right and collection areas deep on both sides.  the safe play will leave you below the hole with an uphill putt for birdie.   before heading to #2, take a moment to look back down the fairway to the ridge where the clubhouse will sit., the 2nd hole sits entirely in the river basin and relatively flat from tee to green.  the fairway turns slightly left with a touch of slope down to a pond protecting the front and left sides of the green.  a good tee shot from the chute will leave a short iron to the green.  your second shot needs to be “spot on”, distance control is key.  any shots long might find the one bunker on this hole.  from back there, the odds you’re staring into the pond are pretty good.  anything short and the slope kicks you left and possibly wet.  “bail out” right  safe for now, but par is no easy task as the green runs away and you’re looking into the pond again.  left is dead, no need to explain that.  the middle of the green is a good shot any day.
,
the 3rd hole is a par 4.  with five sets of tees, the hole plays anywhere from 320 to 475 yards.  there’s just the one greenside bunker on this hole, so tee it high & let it fly.   the second shot has most of the elevation change, take that into consideration when choosing clubs.  when you get to the top, you’ll see the one bunker back left and collection areas everywhere else.  the green sits in a little bowl, anything offline might get a favorable “kick” off the sideboards - don’t be short though, the ball could run back down the hill.  you’ll need two well struck shots to have peek at birdie., the 4th hole is our first par 3 and plays back down the hole we just climbed on #3.  if you want to “tempt the tips”, then its 243 yards.  the green is set at angle from the tee.  the front of the green will see most of the birdies, middle & back pins will bring the bunker into play and bigger scores too.  like the first three holes, collection areas will grab any wayward shots.  once again, nothing wrong with the middle of the green and a two-putt par.        , you’re back up the hill off the tee on #5, but the fairway flattens out once you clear the mound on the left. this par 4 is 40+ yards shorter than #3, so with a mid-iron into the green and you might be looking at a birdie putt. once again, the green slopes from back to front – key is to stay below the hole., you saw this hole from the grand parkway, this par 5 is long - 610 yards from the tips. the key is to avoid the bunkers off the tee. with a good drive in the fairway and a well placed second shot, you should have a wedge to the green. the green will hold your second shot if you can reach it, but don’t be long. the green slopes back to front and like the first five, there’s plenty of pace., one of the prettiest holes on the course and it’s drivable. there’s plenty of room left, so no need to provoke the lake on the right. the green runs at an angle, short left to long right. depending on the pin position, it could be up to three clubs from one side to the other., this par 3 may not be an island green, but there’s no going around. you’ll have to take on the water & rocks to find dry land. the tee box is the largest on the course, so pick your club carefully. if you’re thinking par, it’s best to avoid the bunker that protects the middle & back of the green., this par 5 plays shorter than the yardage on the scorecard. one of the friendlier tee shots so far, this fairway sits in a valley. the second shot is downhill, but stay focused – there’s still plenty of golf to be played. balls gravitate to the lake, so if you’re not going for it in two - stay right. this is another green that slopes back to front, a touch towards the lake too., downhill all the way, you may not need your driver on this par 4. the lake is closer than you think down the right side, so pick the right club off the tee to lay up or aim left with the big stick. the green is protected by bunkers left and the lake right, middle of the green is always a safer bet., our director of golf's favorite, this par 4 swings to the right. you might get a glimpse of the green through the trees, but don’t be fooled – that’s not your line. the tee shot needs to be played down the middle and if you miss it – miss it left. the fairway bunker is in play and if you find it, par will be a victory. a swale sits between you and the green, don’t be short. the bunker protects the front of the green. if you can find any part of the putting surface, then it’s a win., the easiest hole on the golf course, this par 3’s challenge starts on the green. there’s plenty of slope and a couple bumps to negotiate once you get there. if the pin’s left, be left and if right, be right., you wouldn’t think from the tee this is the #2 handicap hole on the course, but it is. the drive must be in the fairway, right side is better than left, to have a shot at the green. the green is protected by a bunker right and lake left & short. as if that wasn’t enough, the green has three tiers – from right to left...low, high, low. you’ll need distance & direction to keep your ball out of trouble here., this par 4 gives you a little break after #13. the fairway is generous on this par 4, even left & right shots can find the green. this is the first green to slope from front to back though. if you have a wedge in your hand, then attack the flag. if not, then land your ball on the front third of the green and be happy. there’s room behind the green, so long isn’t all that bad. remember, the green slopes front to back so the pace of your putt is key., a split fairway par 5 from an elevated tee box, you have a choice to make – left or right the right-side narrows down the longer you go and brings the lake into play, but saves you a couple clubs into the green on your second shot. the left side sets up nicely for three shots to the green – maybe two, but it’s probably a headcover if you do. either way, there is a good chance for birdie here., this par 4 swings from right to left. if you can clear the bunker on the left, then you’ll have a wedge into the green. if you don’t though, then getting to the green in two will be a task. the bunker on the right is in play too, but your chances of getting to the green from there are better. like every hole, the fairway is a good place. this green sits up - any shots right, left or long will carom away from the hole., on this par 3, landing safely on the green isn’t enough. even though you avoided the bunkers left & right and water up front, the battle just started. if you’ve found the same section of the green as the pin for the day, then there’s a chance for par. if not, then negotiating the tiers and keeping the ball on the green is the challenge now. believe us, you have to see it to believe it., its back up the hill on the final hole. you must carry the lake to find the fairway – tip, the left side is shorter than the right. it’s definitely driver, but grab your range finder to see how much to want to bite off. there’s plenty of fairway to lay up on your second shot and lots of room around the green to go for it. the green sits low in the front, high in the middle and the back falls away – stay out of the bunker protecting the right side. just like the rest of the greens at highlands pines, these lazer zoysia putting surfaces make you earn birdie..

Tour 18 Golf Course (Houston) logo

The Takeaway:   Tour 18 is a novelty course that is a better concept on paper than the ground. The notoriously flat ground in Houston doesn’t catch the essence of several holes Tour 18 attempts to encapsulate, particularly those of Augusta National that rely on hilly terrain, making the course more enjoyable as a standalone offering than a replica course.   Grade C-

What to Expect:   The Tour 18 group has two courses in Texas; one in Dallas and one in Houston. The concept behind each course is to replicate some of the best and most famous holes that have been featured on the PGA Tour and tie them together in a routing that works for the property. While that can be a fun concept, it works much better in a fantasy situation, such as a video game, than it does in real life because the single biggest factor that goes into a hole’s design is the natural terrain an architect is presented with. The biggest takeaway people have after visiting Augusta National for the first time is just how hilly it is, so for Tour 18’s most iconic stretch to be Amen Corner from Augusta and to lay it out on flat ground is an anticlimactic moment. Those holes are fun to play on their own, but with the hype of replicating Augusta National, it is a downer because the holes don’t play anywhere near like the real thing. Some holes work better, such as the famous island green from TPC Sawgrass, because they are found on flat ground similar to the original course; though the drama of the setting of the real thing can’t be matched. Unfortunately the routing puts the best holes in the middle of the course which leads to an anticlimactic finish which was unnecessary considering the lack of constraints on the property. In the end, Tour 18 is a decent offering as a public course in Houston, but it is best enjoyed as a standalone course than as a replica course.

CLIFTON, N.J. – Madelene Sagstrom and Rose Zhang left Nelly Korda and everyone else way behind Saturday in the Cognizant Founders Cup.

Trying to win a record sixth straight LPGA Tour event, Korda was 11 shots behind Sagstrom and 10 back of two-time NCAA champion Zhang with a round left at Upper Montclair Country Club.

Recommended Videos

After months of near-perfect play, Korda inexplicably hit bad drives, found bunkers from the fairway and missed short putts. She shot a 1-over 73.

“I think I’ve played really good golf the past couple months,” Korda said. “I’m human, so I’m going to have bad days. I’m not going to feel 100% out here mentally, physically, or whatever, but I’m going to give it my all. It was just one of those days where it felt like a constant battle and didn’t really play too well.”

Sagstrom, who has played well on this course the last three years, had a 66 to get to 19-under 197. Zhang, who won in her professional debut in New Jersey a year ago, had a 67 after lipping out on a short birdie putt at No. 18.

Unless something unexpected happens, one of them will win their second LPGA Tour title. The 31-year-old Sagstrom has not won since 2020. The Swede who starred at LSU had a bogey-free round of six birdies, highlighted by three in row on the last three holes on the front nine.

“I felt like this laser focus all week,” Sagstrom said. "I felt super, not super committed to everything, but I felt really in the moment. And that’s kind of the game I think I need to play tomorrow.”

The 20-year-old Zhang, who played at Stanford and won the Mizuho Americas Open in Jersey City last year, had seven birdies and two bogeys.

Zhang and Sagstrom had a good time on the course, congratulating each other on good shots while sharing a couple of laughs.

“I think the most important thing for me is just to really try to relax, enjoy the moment, enjoy the shots that I’m hitting,” said Zhang, whose best finish was a tie for seventh in six events this year. “Even if I’m not hitting it great, just learning how to commit to everything is the most important.”

Korda, the world's No. 1 ranked player, was tied for third at 8 under with Sei Young Kim of South Korea and Gabriela Ruffels of Australia, who each shot 67.

The 25-year-old Korda had three birdies and four bogeys, the first coming on the opening hole after finding a bunker from the fairway. She missed her drive right on No. 5 and needed two more shots to get on the green at No. 5 for her second bogey. A three-putt from 25 feet on No. 7 was her third, and the worst was hitting a 70-or-so yard chip from the fairway right into a bunker at No. 9 for the fourth bogey.

“Yesterday was good in everything and today was poor in everything, so that’s just pretty much golf for you,” said Korda, who shot a bogey-free 66 Friday. “Just made too many kind of stupid, silly mistakes, which was unfortunate because they were playing so well. So now there is just a massive gap.”

The LPGA Tour record for largest deficit overcome in winning a tournament is 10 shots. It has been done three times by Mickey Wright (1964). Annika Sorenstam (2001) and Louise Friberg (2008 ).

Korda came into the tournament having taken two weeks off after winning the Chevron Championship. It was her fifth straight title and tied her with Hall of Famers Sorenstam (2004-05) and Nancy Lopez (1978) for the tour's longest winning streak.

Sagstrom called Korda's streak incredible and it's something every player on tour strives to do.

“I think she’s really stepped up the attention on women’s golf lately and it’s really cool to watch,” Sagstrom said. "I think it’s really good for the game.”

It had to end sometime, and it's not surprising it will probably happen this week the way Sagstrom and Zhang are playing. They've done a Korda on Nelly.

Amy Olson Retires From LPGA Tour to Focus on Motherhood

Fall maintains the lead after a difficult moving day.

  • Moms on Tour

Amy Olson

Amy Olson always had this plan.

Play on the LPGA Tour for 10 years. Get married. Have kids. Retire to focus on motherhood.

So, after she announced she was pregnant last March, Olson knew time was ticking on her playing career. She teed it up in the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links seven months pregnant and went on maternity leave not long after, ultimately having her daughter, Carly Gray Olson, on September 15.

Becoming a mother is something that often cataclysmically shifts an athlete’s mindset, and Olson was no exception, making it that much easier to share via Instagram that she’d be retiring from professional golf, a decision that Olson couldn’t have been more at peace with when she finally hit the post button.

“Truly, my biggest dream is to be a world-class mom and a world-class wife,” said Olson. “Those are my two biggest goals, and that looks different for everybody. But for me, it means being present more than I’ve been able to while I’ve been on Tour.

“I have so much appreciation for what my mom did for my brother and I, and the kind of life and home life that she cultivated. She was a stay-at-home mom. She ended up homeschooling my brother and I, and she's a huge role model for me. There's a lot of things that she did, (and) I want to be able to walk in her footsteps.”

Every ending, no matter the reason, often has its bittersweetness, its moments of reflection and wondering what would’ve happened had all the what-ifs come true. Olson definitely has things she wanted to achieve in her professional golf career that didn’t end up panning out – winning a tournament, winning a major, playing in the Solheim Cup – but she isn’t a person who lingers on the could’ve, would’ve, should’ve moments in her life.

“When I think about regrets, it would have to be something that I could have done differently,” said Olson. “I'm sure you could point to different times where I could have treated somebody better. I could have said something, and I didn't. It's not that I walked perfectly. But as far as golf and what I put into it, I don't think I could have tried harder. I don't think I could have put more into it than I did.”

When she looks back at her last decade on the LPGA Tour, some moments stand out better in Olson’s mind than others. Victory eluded her at both The Amundi Evian Championship in 2018 and the U.S. Women’s Open in 2020, the latter of which saw Olson unexpectedly lose her father-in-law Lee that Saturday night.

Those final few days in Houston were emotional for Olson, who grappled with waves of grief during the rain-delayed final round that was pushed to a Monday finish at Champions Club. But it’s a moment she now looks back on with understanding, knowing that as heart-wrenching as it was at the time, she grew from that experience in the end.

“The two majors that I contended in, the Evian and then the U.S. (Women’s) Open, both of them ended up in heartache for me whether it was the tragedy around the U.S. (Women’s) Open with my husband's father passing away,” Olson reflected. “It was really, really hard. But I feel like it encapsulates so much of life where you have hard things you have to do.

“You get through them, you overcome and you move forward. That's truly what golf taught me in the end is that you keep putting yourself out there. You keep trying. You keep working hard. You don't always have control of the results, but no matter what, you keep moving forward.”

tour 18 houston tee times

And there are other times that Olson vividly recalls for entirely different reasons. Sometimes the days as a professional athlete blend together, but there are moments that inexplicably will always stay in a player’s mind long after their final score is posted.

“Another memory that I remember that nobody else probably remembers, but at the Kia Classic, I was like six over through (33) holes,” Olson recalled. “I'm like, I'm gonna miss the cut here. I end up rattling off a few birdies to make the cut. Then, on the weekend, I ended up 10 under and finished second place.

“So being able to turn it around and still believe it even though things weren't going really well at the beginning of that tournament, to turn it around and have an amazing run that ended up in second place, that was so much fun.”

Fun for Olson now includes tummy time and diaper changes, car seats and baby clothes, and she couldn’t be happier about it. Many wondered if she might turn her attention towards a passion project or work on becoming a professional pickleball player once she decided to step away from golf. But Olson’s free time is just a bit more limited with Carly in the picture.

“It's a little hard now that she's on the move,” said Olson. “I can't just put her in her stroller and go play pickleball. That'll be one of those things that we want to do as a family. I can't wait until she can pick up a paddle, and we can hit it back and forth. Grant and I, we love being teammates on the pickleball court. We maybe even love beating each other on opposite teams. But being active and being able to do those things with our family and our friends is definitely part of the plan.”

This Mother’s Day marks Olson’s first with her daughter, and while she isn’t bidding farewell to the LPGA Tour at a tournament like some others might have done, she wants her counterparts to know just how much she enjoyed playing and living life alongside them these past 10 years. Saying goodbye to something that’s been a constant in your life since you were a little girl is incredibly difficult, especially for a player like Olson, who has developed deep, personal relationships with many that she competed alongside week in and week out on Tour. But she’s at ease seeing her road as a pro golfer come to an end.

“When you get to the end of any sort of a journey, what you remember is the people,” Olson said. “I've made so many good friends in my time out there, and that's probably the hardest thing is moving on and realizing you're not going to see them in a day-to-day capacity like you did before. I would just say thank you to all of the other players on the LPGA. I so enjoyed our time on the fairways. There are so many conversations that happen between shots, and I enjoyed every one of them.”

Despite this bittersweet farewell, Olson is as ready as ever for this new chapter and is looking forward to chasing a new dream as Carly’s mother. Who knows? We may see her tee it up again down the line, but those plans are very far in the future, at the moment, as Olson hasn’t practiced enough to consider competing one last time in a retirement event.

“I want people to know that if I come back and I tee it up, or if I go play a U.S. (Women’s) Open qualifier or whatever, it's for fun,” said Olson. “It's no longer for my career. It's no longer my job. I want it to be a signal that I'm in a different mindset now. I think the biggest thing is I have different dreams. It's not that those dreams have gone away that I wouldn't want to hoist a trophy. But I have bigger dreams that I am prioritizing now.”

And as she celebrates her first Mother’s Day at home with Carly and Grant, thoughts about winning and golf courses and major titles will be the furthest thing from Olson’s mind.

She will instead just revel in the moment with her family, content with life outside of professional golf and excited about everything her future has in store, motherhood and all.
