Traveling in the time of COVID is always a hassle but was considerably eased by this clinic. As an American, the USA requires me to have a negative COVID PCR test before re-entering the country. The Irish government has a website that lists test sites -- this one by far was the most convenient from my hotel in Dublin. I was able to book an appointment easily online, find the clinic quickly, get a test done very quickly and efficiently, and I had the results about 12 hours later. Absolutely no complaints and I'm grateful that they made a complicated process much easier.
Dr. Simon Collins and his staff were excellent in the care of my daughter. We needed an unexpected Covid test to return home to the U.S. Most places in Dublin did not perform Covid tests on children under the age of 8 years old and that's exactly what we needed since my daughter is only 6. The clinic took care of us same day with no issues. The clinic was within walking distance from our hotel which made things so much less stressful for us. Dr. Collins was absolutely lovely with my daughter with her first Covid test. Wonderful and easy experience with speedy test results. Everything prior was done over email and was quick and easy as well. Highly recommend!!
They were recommended by our tour co. Scheduling appt and actual day of test for my daughter and I very easy , efficient and smooth. Front office and MD friendly, very professional. Made an activity that could have been major hassle, minor. Thank you!
Dr. Simon Collins was amazing! He was very nice and professional! He communicated well and provided my Covid test results within 15 min. Highly recommend you all seeing him if Covid testing is required and/or any medical needs when traveling to Dublin! Thank you Dr. Collins!!
Lollipop in mouth, dead left arm - this is review writing to it's extreme folks! But it must be done, because people NEED to know about this place! All in all, the vaccines I received today in the Travel Health Clinic cost €150 less than they would have at the Tropical Medical Bureau. With such a huge difference in pricing, one would possibly expect a Ryan Air type experience. In, out, no frills, maybe a headache and some highly questionable customer service along the way... Not so with the Travel Health Clinic. Located right in the city centre in Dawson St, up three floors of Georgian stairs (consider this if you have any issues with mobility), into the TH Clinic. There awaits you a super-friendly receptionist, a small form to fill out, and loooads of giant maps (who doesn't love giant maps, cmon!) and travel books / mags. All going well so far. Enter the doc. Friendly, casual, easy to talk to, and above all, extremely knowledgeable. She sat us down, went through any vaccine history and was very patient with us when memory lapsed... (who does actually remember what jabs they had nine years ago?!) We were taken through recommended vaccines, extras to consider, malaria areas, extra medicine / first aid items to bring, general travel recommendations, areas to avoid, and lots, lots more detail. The whole consultation took a full hour which should demonstrate the level of detail covered. In discussing malaria tablets, we were given prices as well as potential side-effects etc. The pricing is really important to know as these tablets are craaazy expensive. If you want to go back after your initial consultation for extra jabs, or more services, they won't charge a consultation fee. If you are going off to foreign lands, definitely make a stop off here first.
I did my research on travel vaccines before I booked an appointment and I discovered there are other (cheaper) options besides Tropical Medical Bureau which people mostly commonly mention. Some might say "oh but would you take the risk in a cheaper place" and these are probably the same people who would buy a brand name antihistamine rather than a generic one with the lower price tag and the exact same active ingredient... After I caught a nasty food poisoning bug in Morocco last year I was determined that my fiance and I would not suffer any medical mishaps on our South Asian honeymoon. Dr Collins was fantastic and talked us through all of our options for our destinations and the possible risks associated with each. He is extremely knowledgeable and he didn't put pressure on us to get any of the vaccines, he presented us with the information and allowed us to decide what we wanted. We went with the "basics" and he told us to go away and think about some extra ones which are slightly more expensive but which might be worth it in the long run. He also provided us with plenty of advice on how to keep safe (no ice in your drinks!) and a prescription for all sorts of other pills and potions to keep us safe abroad. I checked up prices afterwards and we had saved 50 euro on the exact same vaccines at TMB. Also It's worth checking with your medical insurance provider if you get anything back on travel vaccines. (Quinn CompanyCarePlus allow for 60 euro a year). As for the vaccines themselves, well no one enjoys getting a needle in the arm, but they were fine and I even got a lollipop! Yes I'm 26, so what!?
Fantastic service. Everything explained clearly, methodically and economically. Really cannot emphasise how put at ease I was by my visit here. Vaccines are expensive and confusing, this place helped me out a lot. There's definitely an advantage to seeing a specialist in this area over your GP, who mightn't necessarily be 100% up to date on the status of Cambodian mud flies*. The lollipops are fairly epic also. He said I deserved one because I was very brave. *may not exist.
The Travel Health Clinic in Dublin City Centre offers general consultation for medical aspects of travelling, as well as all kinds of vaccinations required for going abroad. The staff are very friendly, a short-term consultation was no problem at all. Dr. Simon Collins then really examines all your needs for your trip and consults in a very understandable and friendly way. He's even giving further consultation via email if needed. Plus, their website sheds further light on what to expect and gives a clear and transparent outlook on prices for consultations and vaccination shots. To sum up: A very good and reliable experience that I can only recommend.
I was incredibly anxious and the staff were wonderful. Made the process as straightforward and unthreatening as possible. Thanks
I went in to the Travel Health Clinic expecting minimal care, just vaccines and out the door. But what I got was the best service I've had from a medical professional in I don't know how long. I got a whole run down of all the vaccines I could get, but with my budget in mind we went through the most important and relevant ones for me, meaning I wasn't being recommended anything I didn't really need, even though the clinic would have made more money. I received such comprehensive advice for my travels on everything from what foods to avoid and what regions are the most mosquito infested. Even the vaccines themselves were painless, my friends who had been to other clinics said they can be sore but I did not feel a thing. The doctor responded to his by saying that there is a knack and if doctors cared enough it would not hurt. Would HIGHLY recommend this place.

Travelling abroad and vaccinations
Introduction, when should i start thinking about the vaccines i need, international certificate of vaccination, cost of vaccines for travel, when you return, more information.
If you normally live in Ireland and are travelling abroad, you should check whether you need vaccinations to travel to the country or countries you plan to visit. Vaccines should be considered if you are travelling to areas outside of Western Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Health risks vary from country to country, so seek advice from your family doctor ( GP ), Health Service Executive (HSE) , travel health clinic or travel agent in advance of travel.
The HSE has information on travel-associated infectious such as yellow fever, typhoid or Hepatitis A on its website.
You can get travel advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on the country that you plan to visit. The World Health Organisation (WHO) also provides some information.
Start the process of vaccination well before you plan to travel. Some vaccinations take time to become effective so give yourself at least 8 weeks to protect yourself fully. An early start to the process is particularly important if you plan to travel with children. The BCG vaccination against tuberculosis (TB), for example, should be given at least 3 months before your child travels.
Certain vaccinations are compulsory. In these cases, you will need to show an International Certificate of Vaccination (record of your vaccines) to gain access to the country in question.
Other vaccinations are recommended, and the decision is left to your own discretion, however, it makes sense to do everything you can to guard against illness and disease while you are away.
You will not need vaccinations to visit any European country, unless you have visited a non-European country shortly beforehand.
This is a record of compulsory vaccines, and it is a yellow card. This is needed when you are travelling to some countries. Make sure to check before you travel. You should get this card when you are getting vaccinated. Make sure that you record your vaccinations on an International Vaccination Certificate .
Travel vaccinations are not free in Ireland through the public health system - even if you hold a medical card. You will have to pay the full cost of vaccinations. A charge will usually be made for your visit to the doctor and in addition, you will have to pay for each vaccine or set of tablets prescribed.
If you feel ill following your return to Ireland, make sure that you see a doctor as soon as possible. Give full details of the countries you visited; in case this should be relevant.
Notifiable infectious diseases
The law in Ireland makes special provisions regarding the reporting of infectious diseases to the national Health Protection Surveillance Centre . As soon as a medical practitioner in Ireland becomes aware of, or suspects that a person they are attending is suffering from, or is the carrier of an infectious disease, they are required to transmit a written or electronic notification to a Medical Officer of Health.
Notification of infectious diseases is necessary to control infectious diseases. Ireland's Health Protection Surveillance Centre works in partnership with health service providers and organisations in other countries to ensure that up-to-date information is available to contribute to the effective control of infectious diseases.
You can get more information from the HSE website or contact your GP or travel health clinic.

Planning your next big trip? Boots are now offering a travel vaccination service
Brought to you by Boots Ireland
Ten of their pharmacies across Ireland have introduced the new Travel Vaccination Service.
The feeling of finally booking a trip away never gets old, especially when it’s somewhere particularly unique or exotic. Even on the grimmest days at work or college, having that light at the end of the tunnel is more than enough to get you through.
The one problem with booking a trip to somewhere far-flung like Thailand or Vietnam is having to think about travel health and getting the recommended travel vaccinations.
And if you’re like us, getting vaccinated is not the best way to get into the holiday mood…
If you’re visiting somewhere new and exotic where vaccinations are recommended, you can now get them at Boots through their brand-new Travel Vaccination Service. They are the first pharmacy in Ireland to offer a service like this and with many of their stores offering late night and weekend opening hours, getting the recommended vaccinations will be a lot easier for many people.
The service, which launched on Wednesday, 24 April , is available in the following nationwide stores:
- Shop Street, Galway
- Half Moon Street, Cork
- Childers Retail Park, Limerick
Those based in Dublin can also opt for these stores:
- Liffey Valley Shopping Centre
- Stephen’s Green SC
- Carrickmines
To get your vaccinations you simply go into one of the participating stores or book your vaccination appointment online on www.boots.ie/travel-vaccination-service .
Before your appointment you’ll need to complete an initial pre-travel consultation with a doctor who’ll give you a prescription for the recommended vaccinations. The doctor’s consultation can be completed online. Following this, your vaccinations can be administered by a specially-trained Boots pharmacist in one of the 10 participating pharmacies.
Getting the recommended vaccinations before your trip has never been easier. All you have to do now is pack and plan!
Boots are the first pharmacy in Ireland to offer a Travel Vaccination Service, providing more convenient access to travel vaccinations for customers. To find out more or book your vaccination service visit www.boots.ie/travel-vaccination-service .
T&C’s: Boots Travel Vaccination Service is available in selected stores, subject to authorised person and stock availability. It’s suitable for persons aged 16 years and over. Eligibility criteria and charges apply. The service requires a doctor consultation and is subject to a valid doctor prescription containing administration instruction. Most doctors in Ireland prescribe travel vaccinations, where indicated, following a consultation. Doctor charge applies.

Travel Vaccinations for Ireland
Vaccinations.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection which causes an inflammation of the liver. In countries where hep A is prominent, many people catch it as a child. The infection tends to be mild in children but can occasionally cause complications. In adults, however, it can lead to liver damage or even liver failure. Although infection rates appear to be on the decrease, hepatitis A is endemic to Sri Lanka and the vaccination is recommended for all travellers.
Hepatitis B is a blood borne disease. It is transmitted during sex as well as via contaminated needles (for example when undergoing a medical procedure or a cosmetic procedure involving equipment that hasn’t been sterilised). The vaccine is usually recommended for travellers who are visiting a country where hepatitis B is endemic for a longer period of time as well as anyone likely to come in close contact with the local population (for example aid workers and volunteers). The nurse or pharmacist may also recommend it if you’re planning any activities that put you at a higher risk of injury. Hepatitis B can cause a range of symptoms. It can become chronic and cause liver damage.
Why do I need a consultation?
It is difficult to say which vaccines you need without asking a medical professional. Your itinerary, your medical history and the activities you have planned all affect which vaccinations you need. It is important that a trained travel nurse or pharmacist checks what you need.
Exactly the travel vaccinations you need - no more, no less.
During your consultation, our nurse or pharmacist will talk you through the health risks at your travel destinations to check which vaccines you need. If a vaccine is not essential, we will explain your options so you can decide whether you would like to have it.
Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes. You cannot be vaccinated against malaria.
Malaria Precautions
- Malaria not normally present unless the illness was contracted abroad.

What is the Climate Like in Ireland?
Ireland is famous for its rainy weather. While rain is most likely to occur during the winter months, weather can change quickly. Most rainstorms disappear as quickly as they arrive. This keeps the rain from disrupting most people’s plans.
The weather in Ireland tends to be fairly identical across the entire island. Because of Ireland’s position and the currents that warm its waters, it tends to have mild weather. The temperatures in the summer months are in the high-10’s. During the winter, temperatures are around 5 degrees. The temperature rarely falls below freezing, and heavy snowfall is rare on the island.
Because of Ireland’s latitude, the sunset and sunrise times change greatly. Sunset in the summer can be well after 11 PM, whilst in the winter the sun may set as early as 4:30 PM.
How Safe is Ireland?
Ireland is a safe country for tourists in general. The country has a low rate of violent crime, but some petty crime is common. Pick-pocketing is possible, so you should always keep an eye on your belongings. Hole-in-the-wall crime may be a concern; always protect your PIN and check ATMs for signs of tampering.
Hire cars have also been targets for crime in recent years. These cars are distinguishable by stickers often placed in the rear windows. You should remove the sticker if possible, and always keep your hire car locked.
Kissing the Blarney Stone
Blarney Castle is a medieval castle built before the year 1200 located in County Cork. The castle was involved in a few different wars and sieges over the centuries. It has been rebuilt three separate times, the last time in 1446.
The castle is one of Ireland’s best-known and most popular tourist destinations. This is partially because of the tradition of kissing the Blarney Stone. This stone has many legends to describe its origin. Some say it was the stone struck by Moses in the Bible that began to gush water. But, it is known for its mythical ability to give “the gift of gab”—or eloquence—to those who kiss it. Visitors from all over the world and of all walks of life come to Ireland to kiss the Blarney Stone.
What Should I Pack for Ireland?
To make the best of your Ireland trip, remember to bring all the essentials.
- Layers – Weather can change quickly in Ireland. Be sure to bring a variety of clothing that can cover many different circumstances.
- Rain Gear – Although the rain in Ireland does dissipate quickly, it’s always best to be ready in case you get caught in a downpour.
- Comfortable Shoes – Whether you are hiking through some of Ireland’s stunning nature or climbing its old castles, supportive shoes are a must.

The beach spans the edge of the town and is perfect for a quite dip as it's enclosed within the bay, also giving close up views of Lambay Island.
The marina is private but if boats are your thing, it's home to an array of stunning yachts and voyagers.
BARS AND RESTAURANTS
One of Malahide's biggest assets is the bar and restaurant scene.
Gibney's is by far the most popular, with a large outdoor beer garden and cosy indoor area, it's a must to grab a pint in.
The road this pub is located on has been pedestrianised and is full of incredible restaurants.
Heading down New Street, you can choose from an authentic Italian at Il Sorriso or Al Fresco, take a left at the end for Pakistani food in Kajjal or a right for some Asian fusion at Siam Thai.
Pop into Gino's for desert or if you're there for lunch, fan-favourite Dublin cafe Póg have their own location here.
GETTING THERW
If you're coming from Dublin city centre, it's only a quick 20 minute train journey from Connolly Station.
The Dundalk or Drogheda commuter train will take you there in 18 minutes, and if you choose wisely, you may miss out on the three stops in between.
The Dart is also an option, but this route will extend your journey to about 27 minutes.
Malahide is the last stop on the line but runs much more frequently than the commuter train - and you get to see Ireland's coastline as you travel.
Dublin Bus' 42 route will have you in the town centre in 42 minutes, leaving from outside Connolly Station.
To drive, it's a 39 minute down the M1 from the city centre, but be prepared for little parking spaces and pay and display in most areas of the town.

AstraZeneca Covid vaccine to be pulled after admitting rare side effect
Vaxzevria has been criticised recently due to a rare side effect leading to blood clots and low blood platelet counts

AstraZeneca is set to pull its Covid vaccine after acknowledging it could cause a rare and potentially fatal side effect.
The pharmaceutical heavyweight voluntarily withdrew its "market authorisation" in the European Union, which took effect this Tuesday. The Telegraph reported that similar applications will be lodged in the forthcoming months in the UK and other nations where the jab has been sanctioned.
The then Prime Minister Boris Johnson acclaimed the vaccine as a "triumph for British science", with claims that it's responsible for saving over six million lives. AstraZeneca announced that Vaxzevria, as the vaccine is known, isn't being produced or supplied any longer and has been replaced by updated vaccines tackling the new Covid variants - hence, the company cited "commercial reasons" for its withdrawal.

Vaxzevria has been criticised recently due to a rare side effect leading to blood clots and low blood platelet counts. A High Court document in February from AstraZeneca confirmed the vaccine "can, in very rare cases, cause TTS."
Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) has reportedly resulted in at least 81 fatalities in the UK, with hundreds allegedly suffering severe injuries. Over 50 purported victims and mourning relatives are currently taking legal action against AstraZeneca in the High Court, reports the Express.
AstraZeneca has responded to speculation linking the timing of a High Court case with their decision to stop supplying the Vaxzevria vaccine, as reported by The Telegraph. The pharmaceutical giant insists that the two events are purely coincidental.
The company expressed its pride in a statement: "We are incredibly proud of the role Vaxzevria played in ending the global pandemic. According to independent estimates, over 6.5 million lives were saved in the first year of use alone, and over three billion doses were supplied globally."
They continued to highlight their achievements, saying, "Our efforts have been recognised by governments around the world and are widely regarded as being a critical component of ending the global pandemic."
With the development of new variant-targeting Covid-19 vaccines, AstraZeneca noted a surplus of these updated jabs leading to reduced demand for Vaxzevria, which is no longer in production or supply within Europe. "As multiple, variant Covid-19 vaccines have since been developed, there is a surplus of available updated vaccines. This has led to a decline in demand for Vaxzevria, which is no longer being manufactured or supplied. AstraZeneca has therefore taken the decision to initiate withdrawal of the marketing authorisations for Vaxzevria within Europe."
The firm outlined its future plans: "We will now work with regulators and our partners to align on a clear path forward to conclude this chapter and significant contribution to the Covid-19 pandemic."
It's understood that AstraZeneca will soon start withdrawing the vaccine's authorisation in other regions too, although it was never approved for use in the United States. In conclusion, AstraZeneca stated: "We will partner with regulatory authorities globally to initiate marketing authorization withdrawals for Vaxzevria, where no future commercial demand for the vaccine is expected."
During the pandemic, approximately 50 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were distributed in the UK. However, for the 2021 winter booster scheme, it was largely replaced by the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
Marco Cavaleri, the head of vaccines at the European Medicines Agency, which is responsible for drug and medicine safety within the EU, told Italian media that he expects all "monovalent" vaccines, those that only tackled the original Covid-19 strain, will be phased out eventually.
Lawyers representing those suing AstraZeneca argue that the vaccine was never as safe as individuals would expect it to be, and that it caused vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis. AstraZeneca maintains that "patient safety is our highest priority," according to The Telegraph.
It's reported that the Government has compensated people affected by side effects from the vaccine. However, its response has been labeled "inadequate", leading to the lawsuit, which AstraZeneca is contesting.

WATCH: Public reacts to futuristic “portal” linking Dublin to New York
Linking "two amazing global cities" this futuristic art installation will remain in place until fall 2024..
A new virtual "portal" connecting Dublin to New York City has opened, sharing live-stream footage from both cities.
The Portal is an on-street art sculpture located off O'Connell Street, on North Earl Street, in Dublin and in the Flatiron District of New York City and allows for real-time interaction between Dubliners and New Yorkers on either side of the Atlantic.
The Dublin Portal captures the Spire and the GPO, while the New York Portal includes footage of the Flatiron South Public Plaza on Broadway.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithí De Róiste unveiled the Dublin Portal on Wednesday, stating that he hopes the art installation will help make the city more inclusive.
"I would encourage Dubliners and visitors to the city to come and interact with the sculpture and extend an Irish welcome and kindness to cities all over the world," De Róiste told RTÉ News.
"This project is an example of one of the many exciting things to expect in Dublin during 2024 as part of our EU Capital of Smart Tourism Designation."

James Mettham, President of the Flatiron NoMad Partnership, said the new art installation will help bring people together.
"This real-time connection between two iconic public spaces in global cities on either side of the Atlantic will bring people together, both physically and digitally, becoming a captivating attraction for New Yorkers and visitors alike," Mettham said.
New York City Chief Public Realm Officer Ya-Ting Liu said the art installation connects "two amazing global cities".
"We are so excited to have the portal as a public interactive art installation, showcasing the vibrancy of our city streets and providing a new point for human connection between New Yorkers and Dubliners," Liu said.

The art installation will remain a fixture of Dublin and New York's streetscapes throughout the summer and is due to run until the fall.
A number of cultural performances will take place at each Portal over the summer, including a visual program in mid-May to celebrate New York's Design Week.
Meanwhile, dance troupe the Libertines Majorettes performed at Wednesday's unveiling in Dublin in a nod to the group's New York connection.
From July onward, the Portal will connect Dublin with other global destinations, including Brazil, Poland, and Lithuania.
Benediktas Gylys, the Lithuanian artist behind the Portal, said the art installation is an invitation for people to meet "above borders and differences".
"The livestream provides a window between distant locations, allowing people to meet outside of their social circles and cultures, transcend geographical boundaries, and embrace the beauty of global interconnectedness."

The livestream portal connecting Dublin and New York
There is great excitement in the air across the road from Dublin's General Post Office and the iconic Spire.
Locals and tourists are fascinated by the sight of a real-time visual link between the city and New York.
The 24/7 livestream is on a big, circular screen erected just off the junction where North Earl Street runs onto the Irish capital's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street.
It allows people in Dublin to see what's going on in New York all day.
A similar screen in New York also means people there can see what is happening in Dublin, around the clock.
Occasionally, a cheer goes up on the Dublin street when people passing the New York screen wave across the Atlantic.
In return, the New Yorkers get a host of waves and smiles from Dubliners.
John Plummer, who is visiting his capital city from Drogheda, is captivated.
"It's amazing," he said.
"It's great to see something like this in the city and to be able to watch people going about their business in New York while we're standing here in the centre of Dublin."
His cousin Luke Plummer, who is from Dublin, is also impressed.
He said: "It's great for people from here who have never been to New York to see what's going on over there at this very minute."
The idea behind the project is to unite citizens via technology on either side of the Atlantic Ocean.
The NYC portal is located on the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street, one of the Big Apple's most dynamic intersections.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithí De Róiste said: "I would encourage Dubliners and visitors to the city to come and interact with the sculpture and extend an Irish welcome and kindness to cities all over the world."
The portal is set to become a fixture of Dublin's streetscape throughout the summer and runs until the autumn.
In the coming months, there will be cultural performances at each city's portal to be enjoyed by people in the other city via the livestream.
From July, the Dublin portal will also connect to other global city destinations in Poland, Brazil and Lithuania.
'Amazing global cities'
Benediktas Gylys, Lithuanian artist and founder of the portal, said: "Portals are an invitation to meet people above borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is - united and one."
New York City chief public realm officer Ya-Ting Liu said: "Two amazing global cities, connected in real-time and space. That is something you do not see every day."
The Dublin portal is situated beside a statue of the internationally renowned Irish novelist and poet, James Joyce.
When asked what he thought Joyce might think of it, John Plummer smiled and said: "He'd probably be amazed at how far technology has come since his time."

Crime and public safety | bart equipment problem shuts down service between richmond and oakland, crime and public safety, crime and public safety | closure of dublin woman’s prison was poorly planned, judge says in ordering further monitoring.
LOS ANGELES — The plan to close a troubled prison in California where female inmates suffered sexual abuse by guards was “ill-conceived,” a judge said while ordering close monitoring and care of the incarcerated women who were moved to other federal facilities across the country.
U.S. District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said in Wednesday’s order that last month’s decision by the Bureau of Prisons, or BOP, to shut down FCI Dublin “created serious concerns” for the well being of more than 600 women who were transferred out.
The prisons bureau announced April 15 that it would shutter FCI Dublin despite attempts to reform the beleaguered facility after an Associated Press investigation exposed rampant staff-on-inmate abuse. Just 10 days before the closure announcement, the judge took the unprecedented step of appointing a special master to oversee the prison near Oakland.
“Although it had as much time as needed to prepare, BOP’s operational plan for closure of FCI Dublin was ill-conceived and, like Swiss cheese, full of holes,” the judge wrote Wednesday.
Gonzalez Rogers ordered the bureau to provide a weekly status update for each transfer to the judge, the special master and attorneys for the incarcerated women who are suing the bureau.
In addition, federal officials must submit a monthly staffing report for each prison where the incarcerated women ended up, along with details of the mental health and medical health care the inmates are receiving.
Late last month, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to the BOP expressing concern over claims of a chaotic transfer process during which FCI Dublin inmates on buses and planes didn’t receive proper medical care and were reportedly subjected to “mistreatment, harassment, neglect, and abuse while in transit.”
Gonzalez Rogers emphasized those concerns and said that “BOP ignored other operational issues” including the proper movement of inmates’ property.
“The process involved careful planning and coordination to ensure the safe transfer of women to other facilities, with special attention given to their unique programming, medical, and mental health requirements,” the BOP statement said. “We continue to expect that the women’s needs are addressed with compassion and respect, providing ongoing support as needed.”
Gonzalez Rogers on Wednesday also denied a recent motion filed by the BOP questioning the authority of the special master. The judge scheduled a May 16 hearing on that issue.
A 2021 Associated Press investigation exposed a “rape club” culture at the prison where a pattern of abuse and mismanagement went back years, even decades. The bureau repeatedly promised to improve the culture and environment — but the decision to shutter the facility represented an extraordinary acknowledgment that reform efforts have failed.

California politics | ‘good man’ or ‘danger to the community’ dueling views presented for pasadena radiologist in devil’s slide crash, california politics, california politics | ‘den of vampiric fat cats’ could cost one california city millions in lawsuit, column: bahu family, denied due process in quest for a permit to rebuild gas station, files lawsuit.
It was a tragically banal slice of vicious, small-time power brokering . Just a speck in the elaborate web of scandal that seized Anaheim city government , to be sure, but a textbook case of how two-bit tyranny can strangle a righteous American Dream.
Yes, the saga of Isa Bahu and his family’s gas station reads like a bad dime store novel. But it could cost Anaheim millions nonetheless.
A lawsuit filed against the city and former Anaheim Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Todd Ament seeks redress for years of inexplicable blockades, wrought by “a den of vampiric fat cats that have used increasingly sophisticated methods to usurp the municipal apparatus for their own pecuniary gain,” writes attorney Steven D. Baric with absolutely delicious flourish.
“Former members of the City Council and the Mayor’s Office have sold their votes, influence, contracts, voice and have conspired with Mr. Ament to both attempt to extort money from Mr. Bahu and to maintain an illegal monopoly interest through the municipal machinery.”
Former Mayor Harry Sidhu — who pleaded guilty to several felonies — conspired with others to hide information, conceal and destroy evidence and silence and intimidate witnesses, all under the color of California law, the suit maintains. And the suit alleges that Ament, who pleaded guilty to several counts of fraud, shamelessly tried to shake the family down.
The result for everyday folks in Anaheim Hills? Years of higher gas prices. Here’s what happened, according to the lawsuit and the investigative report ordered and paid for by the city itself.
Back in 1967, on the corner of La Palma and Imperial in Anaheim Hills, Isa Bahu’s father opened an Arco station. It was the only one on that corner. It did well.
But Orange County grew, and roads needed widening, and old gas stations needed environmental cleanup. There was eminent domain and legal wrangling and the Bahu’s Arco station was torn down in 2003 and scrubbed. City officials assured the Bahu family that it would be able to rebuild, eventually.
Ament started calling Bahu’s sister May, offering to help shepherd the project through. They declined, saying they ran a station there for years and knew how to do it.
But Ament kept pushing. He wanted $50,000 for his assistance. “He was hinting to me that ‘you need help,’ not ‘do you want help,’” May Bahu told investigators.
Weirdness ensued. Edgar Hampton, then-president of the Anaheim Police Association, opposed the project in a letter to the Planning Commission. “There has never been another situation where the Anaheim Police Association was consulted to provide police department records for a planning department issue,” the suit says.
The project was approved by Anaheim’s planning commission in 2019 anyway. And that’s when the “den of vampiric fat cats” swung into serious action, demanding that the city overturn that approval and reject the project, the suit contends.
Sidhu spoke directly to city workers about his “safety concerns” about the proposed gas station — a small matter that usually wouldn’t garner a mayor’s official attention. There would be traffic jams. Danger from fuel delivery trucks. Conflict with the nearby bus stop. Hazards to drivers, Malik and other big guns said.
Bahu contacted Ament. “You’re screwed,” Ament told him, according to the city investigation. “If you had hired me a year ago, you would be fine.”
But the Bahu family fought on. Of course, the Shell station wants to preserve its monopoly, they told city officials. Our project will drive down the price of gas in that corner of Anaheim Hills and tighten their margins. That might not be good for the Shell station, but it will be good for the people of Anaheim Hills.
More than 100 local residents weighed in, telling the city they wanted competition to drive down prices. City planners had already concluded that the station posed no safety risk.
But alas. council members who assured Bahu they’d support the project if the planning commission approved it reversed course. Then-Councilman Jordan Brandman said that if Bahu wanted Brandman’s vote, he must get Sidhu’s vote first. Brandman wasn’t going to vote against Sidhu. Other council members who pledged support also bailed. The project went down, and an appeal to sanity failed.
Perhaps in the pettiest move of all, city code enforcement removed a sign on the Bahu property supporting Sidhu challenger Ashleigh Aitken.
“I was aghast,” Linda Andal, Anaheim’s human resources director and former interim city manager, told investigators about the whole debacle. “It was very dirty, in my opinion.”
Anaheim officials said the city does not comment on pending litigation. It has not received a new application for a gas station at the site, but if one were filed, it would go through the process anew.
Messages left for Ament and his attorney were not returned by deadline.
This sham sucked the Bahu property into a quicksand-like limbo, the suit maintains, costing “more than $300,000 on city staff man-hours, consultants, architects, attorneys, and private investigators” in an effort to “capitulate to the demands of the Anaheim City Council” between 2015 and 2019.
Bahu has sustained serious harm and incurred lost profits, special damages and general damages “in an amount to be determined by the trier of fact,” the suit contends.
The city also violated his federal right to petition the government for the redress of grievances by systematically denying him access to a meaningful appeal, and he seeks a court order demanding the city government properly fulfill its duties.
Not for anything, but the Shell station on East La Palma Ave. was selling regular gas for $5.29 a gallon this week, according to GasBuddy.
The 76 station .35 miles away was selling it for $4.99.
