The Guide To Dudhsagar Waterfalls

• Stowed away on the border between Goa and Karnataka is Dudhsagar, one of India’s tallest waterfalls. Most trails boast rich flora, fauna, and sceneries and so does this one. However, this trek has an added highlight – something that few treks in the world do – a good old railway track!
• This trek to the waterfall is accessible through the Indian Rail Network and jeeps operated by private tour operators. The waterfall especially comes alive during monsoon, when it plunges, as white as milk, from a height of 310 m.

How to reach the base camp

Dudhsagar Railway Station is 570 km from Bangalore. Board the Mas Vasco Express (Train number: 17311) from Bangalore. The train runs only on Fridays.

One can also trek to Dudhsagar from Kulem, which lies in Goa. However, the trek from Dudhsagar station is more promising in terms of beauty and an overall experience.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls From Karnataka:

As of April 2019, trekking is still not allowed either from Goa or from Karnataka. If you do have any updates, please drop an email to [email protected] with a Subject like “Dudhsagar waterfalls update”

Get off the train at Castle Rock station. Castle Rock is the last station that lies within the border of Karnataka. There are a series of rail tunnels, the longest one being Tunnel 2, which stretches a distance of 2.4 km.

The trek from Castle Rock to Dudhsagar is 11 km long. Follow the railway track all the way to the waterfall. It passes through dense forests and smaller waterfalls within Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. It takes around 6-7 hours to complete the trek. One can camp at the Dudhsagar Station, as camping is allowed here. It is advisable to carry your tents and sleeping bags along.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls From Goa:

Since the time of the ban, trekking to the waterfalls along the railway tracks is not possible. For people who still want to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls, an alternative way is using Jeeps available at the entrance to the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary

The entrance to Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary lies about a 10-15 minute walk from Kollem Railway station. The fees are as follows

Entry fees  – Rs 20 Camera fees – Rs 300 Videography fees – Rs 5000

Jeep trip to the waterfall – Rs 2500 for an entire jeep. It is usually shared among 5-6 people. So per head cost of Rs 400-50. The ride to the base of the fall takes about 45 minutes through a bumpy off-road trail and hence taking your vehicle is not recommended. Also, there are multiple streams crisscrossing the off-road trail and only sturdy jeeps of 4WD SUVs can navigate them.

Once at the base it’s hardly 5 mins to the waterfall. Your jeep will wait for your there for an hour and a half and thereafter bring you back to the entrance of the sanctuary.

At the time of updating this information, trekking has been banned, but there have been unconfirmed reports of the trekking being allowed starting monsoon of 2019. We strongly advise getting confirmed details before heading for a trek.

Enjoy your travel (monsoon is the Best time)

Carry efficient monsoon gear (raincoat, poncho), shoes, torch and sufficient food. During monsoon, there are many streams to fill your bottles. During other seasons, carry enough water to last you the entire trek. Confirm train tickets.

Respect Nature, do not dirty this beautiful place. In case of an approaching train, walk away from the track to a safe distance. Do not walk in groups inside a tunnel. Walk one behind the other.

Clean and carry your trash at the camping site of Dudhsagar. Dispose of it at the designated disposal provided by the Indian Railways and the Forest Department.

➤ What to Carry for the trek

No, stuffing it all in isn’t the right way to do it  Packing a backpack correctly saves precious time that you might waste trying to find your things later. It is wise to spend some time learning what goes into packing a backpack.

What should I pack?  On a trek, you only get what you take. Something as simple as a forgotten matchbox can cripple your cooking plans throughout the trek. So, it’s essential to prepare early and prepare well. To begin with, make a checklist. While shopping, remember this thumb rule – keep it light. “Every item needs to be light. This ensures that your backpack, on the whole, stays light,” says Sandhya UC, co-founder of Indiahikes. Balancing out heavy items with light ones isn’t going to have the same effect as having all light items. “Always opt for good quality, light items,” says Sandhya.

How much should my bag weigh?

“Your backpack for a weekend trek should weigh between 8 and 10 kg,” explains Arjun Majumdar, co-founder of Indiahikes, “To break it down, your tent should weigh around 2.5 kg, your sleeping bag, around 1.5 kg, and the ration, stove and clothes should constitute the other 5 kg.” The best way to plan is by concentrating on the necessities – food, shelter and clothes. Gather only those things that you’ll need to survive. Do not pack for ‘if’ situations. “That’s one of the common mistakes that people make – packing for ‘if situations’. It only adds to the baggage that you can do without on a trek,” says Sandhya.

Trekking hack

One good way to go about it is to prepare a list of absolute essentials. Start with the most essential and end with the least essential. That way, when you feel you are overshooting the limit, you can start eliminating from the bottom. Another tip is to be smart while packing clothes. Invest in light. wash and wear fabrics. “Replace a sweater with two t-shirts,” adds Sandhya. Layering is  the  mantra when it comes to trekking. Refer to Sandhya’s clothes list to pack smart.

How to pack  The thumb rule for this one is to eliminate air spaces. Make sure that everything is packed tightly, especially clothes and jackets, as they tend to take up maximum air space. Put in all the large items first. Then squeeze in the smaller ones in the gaps. This ensures minimum air space. A good way to pack clothes is by using the Ranger Roll method.

Where to pack  Bottom  Sleeping bag : Make this your base layer. Sleeping bags tend to be voluminous, but do not weigh much. They’re perfect for the bottom of the bag.  Tent : Just like the sleeping bag, even tents are voluminous and light. Keep the tent poles separately and place the fabric at the bottom of the backpack. Middle  Heavy jacket : Roll up the jacket in a tight ball and place it in the middle of the backpack, close to your back. The middle region of the backpack should always have the heaviest items. You can store other things like rations or mini stoves in the middle.  Other clothes : Roll other clothes and place them in the remaining space, to fill air gaps.

Backpack essentials

Top  Water : Water, although heavy, needs to be easily accessible. So put it in the topmost region of your backpack.  Medicine box : This is another component that you wouldn’t want to be scavenging for when in need.  Poncho : It could rain at any time in the mountains. So, ponchos should be accessible easily. Also, having a waterproof poncho at the top of the backpack provides additional waterproofing to items in the bag.

Cardiovascular endurance

The secret to ascending any trail lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging every day. Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace every day. Swimming, cycling, and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too. Strength This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set. Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your workout.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises – stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles, and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however, light can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek. Working out indoors

The best way to do this Dudhsagar falls trek is on our feet. If you can walk 5, 6 hours which is not a big deal then you must do this, and we will help you with information. There are two ways to start a trek. Either you launch a trek from Kulem railway station which is the most comfortable option for Mumbai , Pune side people or you start a trek from Castlerock railway station which is a most convenient option for Bangalore side people.

How to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall by train from Mumbai, Pune?

You have to reach Kulem railway station from Mumbai , and there is no direct train to reach Kulem railway station. First, you have to reach Madgaon, Goa railway station and Further, you have take passenger train to Kulem from Madgaon, Goa. the frequency of Madgaon - Kulem passenger is very less.

Best train option To reach Kulem from Mumbai

• Board the Matsyagandha Express - 12619 from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Mumbai at 3:20 PM and reached Madgaon Junction at 1:25 AM, rest few night hours at the station
• Board Vasco Da Gama – Kulem Passenger 56962 at 8:14 AM and reached Kulem at 9:05 AM and start your trek.

Best train option to reach Dudhsagar from Pune

• There is two trekking option for Pune people. You can trek from Castle Rock and Kulem both. Catch the Goa Express 12780 from Pune at 4:20 PM and reached Castle Rock at 3:05 AM.
• If you want to trek from Kulem, then continue your journey by the same train and reached Kulem at 4:35 AM.

How to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall by train from Bangalore?

There are two trekking options for Bangalore people that are Castle Rock and Kulem. There is a direct train available for both these stations, but these trains run a few days of the week.

Best train option to reach Dudhsagar from Bangalore

• Catch the Chennai Central – Vasco Da Gama Express 17311 from Yesvantpur Junction at 9:35 PM and reached Castle Rock at 9:25 AM.
• If you want to trek from Kulem then continue your journey by the same train and reached Kulem at 11:04 AM.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls Trek from Kulem

Once you reached Kulem railway station, don't forget to buy a life jacket on rent which is available near Jeep Stand as you will need this on Dudhsagar Waterfalls Swimming Site as the water is deep and its compulsory if you want to enter in that water. To reach Dudhsagar Waterfall Campsite from Kulem you have two options. One is by mud road trek, and one is by railway track trek.

Distance from Kulem railway station to Dudhsagar Waterfall Campsite by mud road trek is 12 km, and it will take 4 to 6 hours one side.

Distance from Kulem railway station to Dudhsagar Waterfall Campsite by railway track trek is 11 kms, and it will also take 4 to 6 hours one side.

You can enjoy both off mud road and railway track trek. Start the trek through railway track till Sonalium railway station and further join the mud off the road till Dudhsagar falls.

Dudhsagar waterfalls trek from Castle Rock

Once you reached Castle Rock railway station, don't forget to buy a life jacket on rent as you will need this on Dudhsagar Waterfalls swimming site as the water is deep and its compulsory if you want to enter in that water. From Castle Rock railway station, you have to trek by railway track to reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls Campsite.

Distance from Castle Rock railway station to Dudhsagar Waterfall Campsite by railway track trek is 14 KMs, and it will take 6 to 8 hours one side.

Things to do Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek

• Enjoy the walk in Railway Tunnel and Tracks
• While on the trek of Dudhsagar falls, you will be chasing the Western Ghats jungles of Sahyadri mountain range . You will see the green beauty of nature.
• You have to pass through the railway tunnel which is surrounded by green moss. You will love the walk of railway track.
• This experience makes the difference, and unique to Dudh Sagar falls from other trekking destination.

Swim Under The Dudhsagar falls

It is one of the best activity to do while on the trek of Dudhsagar. The pool naturally created and located near our destination that Dudhsagar waterfalls . The pool is bright and freezing, even in the afternoon. The pool is deep but safe as we said that don't forget to buy a life jacket on rent this will be useful here. You can see monkeys near the pool, and you will meet lots of fishes inside the pool. This spot has become a favourite destination for both domestic and foreign tourists.

Jeep Safari at Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

Dudhsagar waterfalls are part of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The Jeep Safari is the best activity to do here. Hitting wet mud off the road and watching animals in the jungle make this safari very adventurous. The sanctuary is home to the precious and rarefied wildlife species, and it consists of various species of herbs, spices and medicinal plants.

Depending on your luck, you will get a chance to see abundant wildlife of Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary that includes the Elephants, Tiger, Deers, Indian Bison, Leopards, Indian Rock Python etc. and Birds included the bluebird, three-toed kingfisher drongo, golden oriole, great Indian hornbill etc.

You have to be a little careful as lots of wild animals exist in this park. Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its trekking trail and jeep safari.

Visit Ancient Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple

Tambdi Surla temple is the temple of Mahadev Lord Shiva built in the 12th century. This temple located inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The temple is known for his ancient age and unique style of architecture. It is the only monument of Kadamba Yadava architecture.

Short Break At Dudhsagar Devi Temple, Sonalium

When you will doing the trek from Kulem to Dudhsagar , you will pass through Sonalium railway station which is 8 KM away from Kulem railway station. Dudhsagar Devi temple here you can rest and have lunch.

Nearest Railway Station To Dudhsagar Falls

The nearest railway station to Dudhsagar waterfalls is Dudh Sagar Railway Station which is 1 KM away from Dudhsagar Waterfall Camp Site. However, it is not an official stop. Built for in case of emergency the train can be a halt at this station. So the nearest railway stations are still Kulem and Castle Rock.

Best time to visit Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Monsoon and Post Monsoon from July to December is the best time to visit Dudhsagar Waterfalls . The place-based on waterfall and we can see the real beauty of nature during monsoon.

During monsoon the water level is high, so you have to take a little care and some precautions to successfully and happily completing the trek. If you want to avoid high-level waters and to avoid mud on the roads, you can do this trek after the monsoon and during winter. The water level of falls is moderate at that time, and the way is more easily accessible than the monsoon season.

Places To Stay Near Dudhsagar Falls

If you are on trekking and planning to stay overnight here on your own, then the excellent place is Dudhsagar Waterfall Campsite which is just beside the Dudhsagar falls.

You have to carry your tent as no one provides here tent on rent and only sleeping bags are not sufficient to pass the night. On the weekend, reach early here to reserve your place for camping.Apart from your tent, If you want to stay comfortable then here are the few resorts you will find in the city area.

Resorts To Stay Near Dudhsagar Falls

Nature's Nest, 12 KM away and 20 min drive from Kulem railway station. Dudhsagar Farmstay is featuring a swimming pool. Located in Karmane village and it has its spice garden.

Jungle Book Resort located near Kulem railway station is good to stay option.

Castle Rock Adventure Camp, which is run by the Karnataka Government and it is a fully functional campsite.

Things you must carry on trek

• Trekking Shoes - avoid heavy shoes. Wear lightweight but sturdy boots.
• Raincoat - if you are planning a trek during monsoon, must carry a coat

Dudhsagar falls trek, Goa: Train Timings from Castlerock & Kulem

Dudhsagar Falls is situated on the Mandovi river in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary And Mollem National Park. The name Dudhsagar translates to the ‘Sea of Milk’ in English. This waterfall is situated at the altitude of almost 600 meters and falls majestically from there.

Dudhsagar waterfalls are situated at the border of Karnataka and Goa. After the exposure of this waterfalls in the movie Chennai Express, it gained huge popularity in the same year and became very famous among the people of south India. For the recent updates, I will also encourage you to go through the comments at the end of the blog section.

How To Reach Dudhsagar Falls?

As mentioned before, this waterfall got famous among the people of South India, many people still wonder how to reach Dudhsagar falls. There are three ways by which you can reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls:

Reaching Dudhsagar Falls by Train:

If you do not want to experience Dudhsagar and you are short of time, then you can also enjoy seeing the waterfall from the train. The train passes through a lot of tunnels and also it crosses from the Dudhsagar falls. There is also a sharp U-turn near the Dudhsagar falls so you also get to see the full view of the Dudhsagar falls.

Kulem to Dudhsagar Train Timings

Hubli to dudhsagar train timings, reaching dudhsagar by jeep from kulem:.

You can also reach Dudhsagar by a Jeep from Kulem railway station. However, this facility is not open throughout the year. Just outside the Kulem railway station, a taxi stand is there also known as “ Dudhsagar Jeep taxi stand “. You can go there book a Jeep to the Dudhsagar falls. Also, please note that the Jeep services to Dudhsagar falls are closed during the monsoon because of the flooded river and very muddy jeep trail.

Kulem is around 20 Km from Goa and it also lies in the state of Goa. To reach Kulem, you can book a taxi from Goa and that should not cost you more than Rupees 500 else go for bargaining. You can also reach Kulem by train from Madgao railway. It’s a 45-minute train ride.

Note that no other Jeeps are allowed other than the Jeeps from the taxi stand. So if you are planning to reach Dudhsagar falls in your own four by four, you might have to park your vehicle in the stand and then take a jeep from there.

Jeep can be hired for an entire group or on the individual basis, they charge Rupees 450 per person . A jeep can accommodate around 6-8 persons . You will also have to pay extra costs for the still camera as well as the video camera. For a still camera, the charge is Rupees 50 and Rupees 150 for the video camera .

But do take these cameras because of the Jeep ride worths it. The Jeep ride to Dudhsagar falls is not lesser than a wildlife safari. The jeep ride is a little rough and takes around 40 minutes to reach the waterfalls. The Jeep trail passes through the river stream and deep forest.

If you want you can also take the life jacket if you do not know swimming. A lifejacket costs around Rupees 30 and is available at the jeep stand. There is also a small market there where you can buy extra clothes if you are planning to take a dip in the falls. Since the waterfall is, at some places, around 8 feet deep, it is advisable to take the lifejacket if you do not know swimming. It is also advisable to start early morning around 8-9 so that you can avoid the afternoon sun .

The jeep stops at the Dudhsagar falls for around one hour and then you return by the same Jeep. Forget not to take the number of the Jeep driver, in the case of an emergency.

The best and the most enjoyable way to reach Dudhsagar falls is on foot. This journey is strenuous but still, it is enjoyable. I have dedicated an entire section about reaching Dudhsagar on foot under the Dudhsagar trekking Guide section below.

If you are planning to do Dudhsagar trek (Reaching Dudhsagar on foot), the above route map might be of help to you. In the above map, the black lines are railway tracks on which you walk along to reach the waterfalls. There is also a railway station named ‘Dudhsagar railway station’ but no train stops at this station because this station is purposefully made for the technical breaks and all.

There are two stations from where the trek along the railway track can be attempted:

• Castlerock railway station in Karnataka
• Kulem railway station in Goa

Below is some basic information about the Dudhsagar trek:

• Dudhsagar Trek difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
• Best time for Dudhsagar trek: July to Dec (during Monsoon)
• The distance between Dudhsagar railway station & waterfall : 1 Km

Dudhsagar Trekking Routes:

Castlerock railway station to dudhsagar falls trekking (14 km & 5-6 hours of trekking).

If you are coming from Bangalore side, Castlerock should be your preferred Dudhsagar trek starting point. Castlerock railway station lies in Karnataka. So if you are coming from railway stations like Hubli, Dharwad, Londa, Dandeli etc. then Castlerock railway station should be your ideal railway station to start the trek.  

Castlerock to Dudhsagar trek is the most popular trekking route. However, on weekends, this route is usually crowded. If you are starting from Bangalore, you can catch Madras- Vasco Express on Friday night at 21:35 PM at Yashwantpur railway station and reach Castlerock railway station on Saturday around 09:20 AM. 

I have also mentioned the trains and railway timings from different railway stations to Castlerock railway station in the later section of this article. Besides being a longer trekking route to Kulem-Dudhsagar route, this trekking route also has more tunnels on the way and also has the famous second largest tunnel en route.

There are other two advantages of starting Dudhsagar trek from Castlerock station:

• If you are coming in a hired vehicle like Tempo-traveler or some taxi, you do not enter Goa if you park your vehicle at the Castlerock railway station. This way, you save inter-state road tax also.
• There is also a hotel/ staying place near the Castlerock railway station named Castlerock adventure camp .  They are Karnataka government certified hotel. You can either book the whole package from them (Stay + Trek) or if you are just staying there, you can par your car there and attempt the trek.
• In case you are not staying there at all, you can ask their permission for the car parking. I hope that works. Or park near the railway station.

Kulem railway station to Dudhsagar falls trekking (11 Km & 4-5 Hours of trekking)

In terms of greenery and beauty, Kulem trekking route is not less than the Castlerock trekking route. Kulem is around 20 Km from Goa and can be reached easily by taxi or train from Margao railway station. However, trains are not so frequent from Madgao to Kulem. So please check the railway timings from Madgao to Kulem below.

One of the most important things on this route is, it has the famous Dudhsagar viewpoint (refer the map above). Dudhsagar viewpoint is one Km away from the waterfalls from where a train takes a complete U-turn. One can see the Dudhsagar’s majestic waterfalls view from here which lies on the Kulem route.

Is it safe to walk on the Railway Tracks?

Of course, we know that it is not so safe to walk on the railway tracks. However, this route being not so busy, the frequency of the trains is very less so it makes comfortable to walk. However, in some places, there is nothing to stand when a train comes so be careful.

Also, the rail tracks become very slippery during the monsoon after the rainfall. Have proper shoes which have a nice grip and do not slip on a wet track. My this experience also comes from Sakleshpur railway trek .

Where to camp at Dudhsagar Falls Trek?

The Dudhsagar camping site is nearer to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Just nearer to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, Dudhsagar railway station is there. You can pitch your tent there.

However, Dudhsagar station is usually crowded on the weekends so it is advisable to start your trek early. There are not any camping charge. Don’t forget to carry tents because it might rain at night if you are planning to camp there.

Other Facilities like Food, Bathroom, Staying facility at Dudhsagar Railway Station/ Falls?

There are no Food facilities available at the Dudhsagar railway station. So, you will have to carry your own food. Finding dry woods during monsoon is tough too. So, if you planning to cook your own food at night, be prepared for that. However, During the day, local vendors sell snacks and drinks at waterfalls but at the costlier prices. 

Also, there is no bathroom facility at the Dudhsagar railway station. You have to use nature for that. If you are going in a group with girls, make sure they know where they are going to. 

Mollem National Park Jeep Safari

I must say your visit to Dudhsagar falls is not complete if you have not planned the mollem park jeep safari. The jeep safari is of about 40 to 45 minutes and it also covers the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. There are also options to pre book your jeep safari online . For everyone along with the nature delights, you may also enjoy some rare animals like barking deer, bonnet macaque as well as some rare plants and birds. The cost of jeep safari per person starts from anywhere near RS.1700 which also includes the entrance fees of the waterfall.

Tips for visiting Dudhsagar Falls

If this is your very first visit to Dudhsagar falls than you need to keep some important points in your mind:

• Not all trains halt at the Dudhsagar railway station so if you are travelling by train then please check that the train you are travelling does have a stop at this station.
• Please avoid walking on the railway tracks as it is not allowed. 
• Planning a jeep safari then please start at the starting point in the morning itself.
• For a jeep safari, you will need at least 7 people in your group so plan accordingly else you will have to wait for the jeep to be filled.
• Please make sure that your start your visit to Dudhsagar falls early as the visit will be closed at sharp 6:00 PM.

How to return from Dudhsagar waterfall to Kulem/Castlerock?

In the worst case, you will have to walk back to Kulem or Castle rock railway station. However, this railway route has a good frequency of goods train. Sometimes, the goods train stops for a while at the Dudhsagar railway station to check their breaks because Dudhsagar railway station onwards, the trail descends along the rails so checking break becomes necessary for them.

In those cases, you can stand at a point where either engine will stop or the guard’s boogie will. Then you can talk with the guards of goods trains to help you out till Kulem or Castlerock depending upon the direction the train is going to.

Sometimes, also, one or two passenger train comes and slows down a bit (does not necessarily stops). In those cases, you have to really quick to get on the train because there will be a lot and lot of people fighting to enter the train. Be careful with the kids and women.

How I get the return tickets at Dudhsagar?

Buy the returning ticket as well at the Kulem or Castlerock railway station because there is no ticket vending counter at the Dudhsagar railway station.

NOTE: If you get into sleeper coaches with general tickets, be prepared to pay heavy fines unless you are lucky enough to escape from the eyes of TTE (Train Ticket Examiner)

What to carry on Dudhsagar falls trek?

• A good walking shoe with good grip because railway tracks get sleepy
• A light backpack
• Sleeping bag (If you are planning to stay overnight and if they are not waterproof wrap them in some plastic to keep them dry)
• Tent (For the same above reason)
• Torch (A must)
• Raincoat (You would love walking under rain)
• An extra pair of clothing
• Toiletries (There are no toilets there)
• Fully charged camera and mobile phone
• Personal medication
• Sufficient eatables (Dudhsagar has no food stalls)
• Sufficient cash

Is Dudhsagar trek Illegal?

Well, it is a difficult question to answer. But, no, Dudhsagar is not an illegal trek . However, due to overcrowding and drowning of a few students in the Dudhsagar falls last year, the police banned the trek for a month or during the monsoon when the water level was very high in the falls. But now the trekking has resumed on this track and people have also started to go for this trek as well.

Dudhsagar trek from Mumbai:

Start from Mumbai by a Train to Margao railway station (Goa) so that you can reach Next morning. Here is a list of the trains (Preferable trains are marked inside an orange box)

Reaching Dudhsagar falls from Margao:

From Margao (Goa), Kulem is the nearest railway station to Dudhsagar falls from North-Eastern side. You can also take a train to Kulem. Since the distance to Kulem is around 40 Kms from Margao, you might not get a booked berth for that and you will have to travel in General class.

Once you reach Kulem in next hours, take an offroad jeep to Dudhsagar falls from there. Visit the falls and return Kulem again.

Best time to visit Dudhsagar falls will be from Septemeber to April when the monsoon is over.

I sucessfully attempted this trek on 29th Nov from Castle rock. If luck favors you can start the trek from CLR if there is no RPF present at the station. Alternatively you can reach DDS via Good train by asking the guard. Both options are purely based on luck and timings. There are no RPF/Police en route to DDS. So if you are lucky enough to escape from on duty RPF in castle rock then most probably you can complete your trek to DDS.

(By track way?) 2] is there no way to reach dudhsagar waterfall now? If yes, how? 3] tenting stay is also not allowed on dudhsagar railway station?

The Trek from castle Rock is closed una all the format. However, through some comments I have come to know that there are some organisations which conduct Trek not totally along the railway tracks but through forests.

To reach the falls you can explore options from kulem. Either by mud way or by jeep. Both of the route are same.

Camping or staying is not allowed near the falls or in the reserve forest.

Hai guys, Refer to my earlier post on 13, 19 Sep 16 and 21 Oct 16 . I got a VERY good response in my whats app asking about DDS falls trek. I did my best with the available info.

As I said in my last post, I went on trek to DDS falls bottom on 24 Dec 16 (went on mud track and returned on rail track) Latest update is the present water level in falls is moderate. (Declines as months pass by)

DDS falls bottom is officially open for public and I found a lot of rush including those who were going through jeep as well trek. (u can buy tickets in kulem, DDS falls counter)

For trek:- U have two options to trek (KULEM TO DDS FALLS) One is mud route (the jeeps way / kachha rasta). U would find many fellow trekkers in weekends and lots of jeeps moving to and fro. Two is via train track upto sonaulim station and get join back to mud rote (u would save around 2 km but feel uncomfortable walking on tracks, even good brand shoes/ boots might give up sometimes as my woodland gave up).

Choose ur option wisely. Through train track very less people going for trek but via mud route u would find number of fellow trekkers on the way. Safety tip for rail trek :- While u guys trek through rail track u will find one tunnel (aprox 250 mtrs) before the sonalium station so carry a good torch and avoid using ear phones r head phones when opt for rail trek. Carry one visile for communication/ alerting others).

Remember one thing ‘’DDS BRIDGE’’ is not yet open for public. So avoid moving on train track after sonalium station otherwise u have to get back the same way to sonalium and u will find its just a waste of efforts.(but u can have full view of waterfalls after 1 km on track from sonalium to DDS bridge). Those who wish to go by train can alight at sonalium station (both ways via kulem r castle rock) from there its hardly 3km to DDS falls. Don’t think about alighting at DDS railway station (refer my 21 Oct post). Good news for night campers (Sonalium):- No night stay possible in the vicinity of waterfall, because no suitable ground, surrounding and seems not safe too. For night camping one need to come back to sonalium from falls (aprox 3 km ) and u will find a temple and couple lives by and presently Power supply is also restored so u can have fun with friends. If ur luck is good u would find other night campers. In my case, whenever I do night stay no other team was there for night stay. U should carry own tents for better experience. No tents available for rent. If u don’t have tents atleast u should carry a sleeping bag and mosquito net. Presently, its cold in mid nights so carry ur warm clothing. For the best possible way u drop ur extra lugguage on the way to falls at the couples home (couple is so genuine and helpful) and get back to the temple and pitch ur tent. For food and drinks the couple will provide at the reasonable prices (but order well in time because it’s not hotel it’s a normal house). In the morning u can fresh up in a water stream flowing nearby and pack ur luggage and return to ur destination . The temple is just below the sonalium station so u can get train easily with planning. Even ladies too can enjoy night stay no problem. As of now no wild animals spotted nearby and no incident took place. The couples lives by are very helpful so u can take their help. Lot many trekkers had successful trek and night camping after watching my post and took guidance in whats app. So enjoy guys and have a nice trek. I think I hav covered almost all aspects, even if any doubt u can what’s app me for the things which I didn’t cover in my posts. So pls I request everyone, pls go through all my previous posts before whats app me, u would almost find all answers in my post so ask genuine questions only. I keep replying the repeated question which sometimes makes me uneasy (Pls don’t ask about trek from castle rock, actually I don’t know becoz I live in goa). Hai guys, To my earlier post on 13 and 19 sep 16 i got a VERY good response in my whats app asking about DDS falls trek. I did my best with the available info.

LATEST UPDATE:-

As per one of the fellow trekker (to whom i guided) informed me 2 Weeks before that. They started trek from kulem to DDS falls bottom through Rail track, but they were stopped almost near to tunnel before sonalium by forest/ Railway staff and they told him that railway made a vigil post near to that. when they were tried to sneak through jungle track (mud track/ jeep track) one of the staff informed that going is no use because near to sonalium route on mud track too had made a railway staff post to stop all access to DDS falls bottom, so they made their along the way back to kulem with lot of unhappiness. so present staus about jeep is not yet known (hopefully they might managing them and making trip with extra charge).

To confirm that Last saturday (15 OCT) while i came across from castle rock to Kulem by amaravati express. i did’nt find a single trekker on track through out the belt from castle rock to Kulem. i met a group waiting near DDS station as they were waiting for train to get back to kulem. actually they were alighted at DDs station in the morning to reach falls but unfortunately they were too stopped by railway police near to station and didnt allowed them to proceed to DDS bridge so they returned without reaching falls.

if any trekkers made to reach falls bottom and having fun, they can be seen from bridge, but i find no one in DDs falls bottom too (which can be viewed from moving train ). so it might be correct that some officals stopping near to sonalium in mud track. i find railway police (single person at once) in patrol near to tracks at castle rock station , caranzol, DDS station and Bridge. But i didnt find any police patrol near to sonalium station. and i had noticed that people were alighting and boarding in train (not happened to talk to who were boarding at sonalium) and no railway vigil post has seen from sonalium to kulem (as i said in para 1).

so fellow trekkers its upto u that what u decide. if u dont want to loose your will please go for trek and try to make it up. its 50-50 chances. if u made the trek successfully then please share your time and experience in trekker pedia.

In Dec 3rd week i might go trek and camp. Till then this is my last update. Regards, Giridhar

Still prohibited to roam on the bridge as few Policemen stopped us, but you get amazing view of entire falls from the view point ahead of bridge towards kulem. As of now reaching to the bottom of dudhsagar is close to impossible, because of rise in water level of streams. Waiting for water level to reduce, so as to visit this wonder again

Hai, Dudhsagar (The falls bottom) i went to Dudhsagar on 10 Sep 16 by walk from kulem and stayed overnight in own tents and returned on 11 Sep 16 to kulem. Recommendations:- I was more excited to do Dudhsagar trek but no one has given me the right path except trekkerpedia (Comments and replies on daily basis for about 2 months). Really it has helped me a lot and i thought its my turn to contribute genuine info to our fellow trekkers. Presently Dudhsagar trek is not open through track. However u can go upto sonalium by walk or any train which is passing by. I found that every train passing through sonaulim is halting about 1 r 2 minutes which is enough to alight. and locals in kulem are not so friendly and misguide u to avoid by walk and scare u that vigilance and railway officials will hold u and send back, so that u could use thier transport to reach dudhsagar trek. No jeeps are going directly from kulem to dudhsagar. But Jeep operators offer u to pick and drop three kilometers (by walk on track and jungle) away from kulem and they charge for Rs. 500 for that ride. (however u need to walk for almost 6 km). Bikes are offering directly from kulem to Dudhsagar but very expensive charge around Rs. 1200 (pick and drop).

Hai. Its Giridhar. To my last post on 13 sep 2016. I got a lot of msgs on my what’s app regarding trek. I almost shared my experience with photos too.

Latest update. On 18 Sep 16. I had travelled by Amaravati Express from vasco. This train stopped almost all the stations in between kulem to Dudhsagar ( sonalium, Near to DDS bridge and DDS Station) and found some families got down near DDS bridge but RPF didn’t allow them to reach Bridge. So I advise people don’t go DDS bridge unless its open officially. Best way to trek till the trek is officially open is go by mud walk from sonalium to DDS fall bottom. One of fellow trekker told me that due to heavy down pour in last 2 days. Today 19 sep 16 the streams between the sonalium and DDS fall is heavy and unable to cross. So they are unable to cross and returned back without completed the trek.

So i feel trekkers should wait for a while till the water level in streams to get normal.

Many people asked me that any hotels near by sonalium .

Sadly there is no hotel near by. But there is a temple just below the sonalium station. And a couple lives near to temple. U can sleep in that temple in nights and the couple provides u good food too with reasonable price. At least u carry sleeping bags else tents are recommended. No power supply is restored yet so carry power banks for ur cameras and mobiles. Sonalium is easily accessible by train from kulem as well castle rock and by walk from kulem ( on track r through jungle)

1. taxis are available in the form of Jeep service from Kulem keep stand….

2. Two-wheelers cannot reach the base as the trail is very muddy

3. there is only one option and that’s jeep ride to the base of the fall

trekking to Dudhsagar waterfalls is completely banned now. You are not allowed to trek from either Kulem or Castlerock. Yeah, the mud road to the bottom of the Dudhsagar falls is open from Kulem. Jeep services are always available. If both the options are closed then there is no other way, you can reach waterfalls except taking a train ride.

Hey all, just returned from Dudhsagar trek. (dated 19-08-16) Few things I wish to share. 1.Yes-the trek is completely banned. Railway staffs are very vigilant and not let you to sneak through. I have not spotted a single fellow trekker on the Kulem-DDS stretch. 2.The mud path is accessible. Though u have to brave few streams (particularly one having very strong current) enroute. The mud path will take you to the bottom of the falls. I personally never recommend the mud path route as the view from the bottom is not as gorgeous as from the track. 3. Beware of monkeys (if u r not in large group).

Jeep service depends on monsoon. If it has rained a lot this month and the trail is really muddy then chances are high that the jeep trail is closed. Yeah it is possible to do so in a single day

Here are the answers to your queries:

1. It’s safe to go there but if waterfall is open or not, I am not sure… as per the last comment, waterfall is closed or banned but you better confirm with the Goa/ Karnataka tourism 2. From Kulem, you will have to hire a jeep. There is a dirt trail from Kulem to Dudhsagar. However if due to rain the trail gets muddy, there might not be any other way. Even on Jeep trail, finally you will have to walk almost a km 3. If you go by jeep, you can return by the same jeep. Else trek and total luck while returning 4. Yeah Karnataka Government Adventure Camp is there in Castlerock, they also organize trek. so better you ask them everything and even to organize for you all 5. After monsoon 6. Goa, Jog falls, Gokarna

I have been recently to Goa and now the forest department/railways had totally banned the trekking on railway line from Kulem to Dudhsagar falls. No one is allowef to trek on this route

While trekking from Kulem towards Dudhsagar waterfalls, you will cross the viewpoint. The shortest distance is taking a jeep from Kulem and next shortest is from Kulem to Dudhsagar… there is no alterbative….

I am planning to visit Dudhsagar from Goa in Jan 2016. So Jeep from Kulem will drop us to base of dudhsagar falls. Is there any way to trek from base of dudhsagar falls (the place where Jeep drops) up to the view point? If yes, then how long and difficult is the route? how much time it will take? Hello, it’s my first visit to goa and that too in last week of December I’ll be staying near calingute beach.. Is it possible to trek one way i.e from kulem to dudhsagar or any other and then get a jeep for return journey..? I have to get back in one day only plus i want to trek at least one way.. Hi Adarsh, the bst way for you should be, getting down at Kulem and take a jeep from there but his part will skip trekking… and while returning you take the jeep back… because if you trek until dushsagar falls then you cannot take a jeep because jeep will not give seat to people who were not booked from Kulem itself….

or another way will be get down at kulem, trek until the falls and then wait for a train to stop there or atleast slow down there… cathc the train and return to kulem again or go to castleroc and from there catch the next train to goa….

So, jeeps from Kulem will take us to the base of the falls. Is there a way to trek from base of Dudhsagar falls to the Dudhsagar view point? If yes, then how is the condition of this route, is it dangerous than trekking on railway trek? how much is the distance from base to the view point and roughly how much time it may take? Is it ok to trek from view point to the base of the falls or it is ok vice versa or both are ok? Any particular info about trains starting Vasco and stopping at Dudhsagar?

We are starting from Mysore(Mysore- CastleRock Railway station- 583KMs) in the evening around 6PM & will be reaching the Goa proximity around 4AM (14th November 2015) the next day. We are preferring to access the falls by Train or by Jeep (2nd option). Please suggest and inform me about the train timings & whether I should head towards Kulem or Castle Rock Railway station to catch the train or preferring Jeep is a better option. We have plans to head towards Arambol in the noon.

Hi kush… the train halts at neither of the two stations… however… the train might slow down enough to get down… you can try that… else you will have to trek from kulem to castle rock in your case.

Anyone planning to do the trek please note: as of August 2015, the Indian Railways have unfortunately restricted access to the waterfall, so in case you plan a visit, make sure to check whether access has been restored. We trust (and hope) that this will be a short term measure, as Dudhsagar Waterfall is at it’s best during the rains – and a lot of hiking enthusiasts have been visiting in the rains since decades.

The good news is, there’s plenty of other waterfalls around. And if it has to be Dudhsagar, with or without limitations imposed by railways, the jeep service will recommence in October.

We are running a farmstay close to Kulem, which makes a good ‘basecamp’ for visits to Dudhsagar Falls – find more info here: http://www.dudhsagarplantation.com/farmstay .

We intend to park the bike at Kulem & them walk the rail tracks.

The trek is open now… it was banned but not any more.. however you never know…. no Trains stop at Sonalium stations.. so in any case you will have to either walk to the castle rock or Kulem.. from there you can get a train towards goa or other side… kindly go through the blog once again about the train timings….

Kulem side is shorter and the famous dudhsagar view comes enroute.. from castlerock side, you will have to trek more but number of tunnels and waterfalls are more… make your choice accordingly

there is no more ban on the trek now… police persons are allowing people to see the waterfalls but bathing or going inside is banned. Or else you can take a trek from castlerock towards kulem, you will cross dudhsagar falls anyway in that case

We are two couples, planning for a one day trek to Dudhsagar on Monday morning. Planning to start the trek by 9am from Kulem and return thru Castle Rock route.

We will reach Kulem by Taxi from Goa and after the trek we need to board a train from Castle rock to Bangalore @ 11pm.

Please let me know whether this is feasible.

I mean starting the trek at 9am and finishing it before evening? Is it possible? Also Is it safe to wait in Castle rock station till 11pm for our return train?

Hmm tough question though but I try to answer it to my best 🙂

Lets say you start the dudhsagar by 9 am in the morning on monday, I think you should be able to reach the falls by 14:00 comfortably provided your partner can walk on the boulders for 10-12 kms. without much luggage.

Assuming that you reach there comfortably, there is only train you can wait for towards Castlerock is at 17:00 at Dudhsagar. (NOTE: THIS TRAIN ACTUALLY DOESNOT STOP THERE BUT CHANCES ARE THERE THAT IT MIGHT SLOW DOWN @DUDHSAGAR RAILWAY STATION). However, if train slows down and you are not able to catch the train or your partner is unable to catch up (though you will have 30 seconds to a minute and monday presents very lesser crowd) then you might wait for some goods train, which have no particular timings but hopefully one should arrive.

Another option is wait for the 17310 Yaswantpur biweekly express train which will probably arrive at 22:30 at Dudhsagar but since its monday there might not be other people camping there because crowd flock on weekends mostly. and waiting in the night does not sound good to me.

On 6th July(monday)we completed the trek on time:) but the sad part was there was no rain fall for the past 4-5 days, so water level was way too normal. Also we were disappointed a lot because “WE HUMANS” have screwed up the place big time.

1). It was so dirty with lots of plastics and food waste around.

2). Locals in Kulem told us, some MBA graduate student lost his life 4-5 days ago and we witnessed around 20-30 cops for security reasons.

3). JEEP trek was closed(we checked with locals in Kulem).

Overall it was an average place/trek after the above mentioned disappointments.

We would like to visit the place again for the Jeep trek and also wanna visit the origin point.

One of my colleagues also complained about the water level and he also went on for the trek on the same weekend that you went. I think lesser water in the waterfall is not mainly due to not raining for last past a week but due to week monsoon this year. I remember, one of my another friends talking about the garbage dump there last year on 15th august weekend. It’s a huge and massive pile.

I am planning to visit the falls in 2nd week of July 2015. I will be going to Kullem by Car with my wife & 2 daughters [7 Yrs & 3 Yrs] I will be disappointed if Jeep Service is not running on the day I visit due to rain. So planning a alternate by train from Kullem to Dudhsagar and back.

Please Note: With kids, Trekking more than a KM is not an option for me. I guess Bridge to Dudhsagar Falls station is about 1 KM.

None of these trains officially stop at Dudhsagar. However, they, sometimes, slow down a bit people catch up the train. Since you are with family, I dont think you will be able to catch the train until helped by someone. Same for the Goods train. Since goods trains are heavier they most of the times, stop there. but I cant say about the rush.. it depends…I think Kulem Jeep should be working.. please give it try.. I am sorry but I dont wanna predict from here about everything….

Just back from Dudhsagar Falls [13-July] with my Family including 2 kids. We were only family with kids there. I reach Kulem on time for 10:30AM train. It took just Rs. 100 for return tickets from Kulem to Castle Rock for 2 Adults + 1 Kid. I learned there as 10:30 AM train [17315-Vaso Velankanni Wkly] do not stop at Dudhsagar Station. So I had to go till Castle Rock Station and catch 11:40 AM Train [18047-Amaravati Express] for Dushsagar and reach at Dushsagar station at 12:45. Then walked to Falls in the heavy rain. Note: trains do slow down a lot at every station while going up to Castle Rock, however with Kids I did not take a risk to jump off at Dudhsagar. After an hour, walked back to Dushsagar station and caught a goods train and reached to Kulem @ 3:30PM. Few points 1. Water level was way too normal. Still the falls is awesome. 2. It was a lot dirty with lots of plastics and food waste around. 3. It was crowed even on Monday 4. JEEP and Motebikes were closed. 5. While boarding on Good Trains, few passengers helped us boarding the break van [Which I felt not necessary] even before the train stops complete. It did stop for a min, however everyone on board before that. Later those passengers turned be to “Guides” with other groups asked Rs 500 for stopping the train and help us boarding, which I disagree completely. I did pay Rs 200 as token, but even after that those Guides were kept arguing. That was the sad part of the travel. Overall Water Falls is very good and must visit for nature enthus. However my wife was not at all happy with travel part of it. I think tracking with friends would be still better. I feel it would be nice if Railways can add couple of bogies to their pushup engines and make a stop at Dudhsagar as the trains are as usual full. Please note: Goa Exp is running on alternate days due to Itarasi Cabin fire. It the only passenger training after noon to reach Castle Rock. Thanks for your tips, it was of great help.

Hi we Planned our visit to Goa from bangalore on July 5th…. We are 5adults and would like to visit doodhsagar. Our train stops at Castle Rock (2.30am) and at kulem(4.10 am).Please advice which place among the two above is advised to reach doodhsagar falls.

You can either wait for some time at castlerock and start the trek early morning or you can also get down at Kulem and get fresh and start the trek. Kulem route is shorter though. But if you start from Castle rock and you manage to reach there in say 4-5 hours, around 9-10 AM in the morning… Sometimes two of these train stops at Dudhsagar (or at least they slow down sometimes) 11097 Poorna express and 17311 Chennai-vasco express… I am sharing their timings…. http://indiarailinfo.com/train/poorna-express-11097-pune-to-ers/438/76/52 and http://indiarailinfo.com/train/chennai-vasco-express-17311-mas-to-ypr/1732/35/997

Hi Sir We will Plan for dudhsagar in 5th september 2015, we are 10adults and four children, i want to know that in september taxi is available from kullem otherwise we have to plan with bike also. we will plan from madgaon to dudhsagar and return at evening. please suggest us it is possible or not.

Looking at your date in early september, Jeeps’service from Kulem should be closed by then. It depends on the monsoon this year. If it rains hard, biking would also be tough. However, if you bike without a pillion at the back then it might be possible but I doubt. So I better suggest you to postpone the plan by a month when the rainfalls recedes and sun shines a bit

19th Sunday 4 AM: pack and leave dudhsagar; trek to Kulem; 10.20AM: Kulem; train 11097; Kulem to karwar; ; (we continue on to karwar forextended trip) we leave karwar on monday afternoon and reach back bangalore on tuesday morning.

we are planing to come on 4th july from hyderabad. our train will reach to kulem station at 1pm. is it possible to reach dudhsagar falls by jeep&come back to goa from kulem same day evening. jeeps will be there in mansoon season is it possible to go from kulem to goa by road that day evening or night, any vehicles will available

It is possible to go to the falls by the jeep and return same day to the Kulem by afternoon and leave for Goa. Goa is not so far from there. I am not so sure about the vehicle from there but I am sure that from Kulem you might hire some cab or taxi to leave for GOA and that shouls not cost much.

COming to the availability of jeep in the monsoon: Since monsoon has started so it might be possible that jeeps have stopped going there. But there has not been much of rainfall yet so Jeeps might also be plying. You will only get to know about it once you reach there.

SO if you get a jeep there then yeah its possible to return KUlem same day and by evening to Goa but if Jeeps are not avaialable then you can look for trains at Dudhsagar falls which go to Goa. For further enquiries, you can ask at Kulem.

I have been to this Trek on june 15. As of now Jeeps are available once rainfall increases the route is completely closed. If it open then, Yes from kullem going by jeep the complete trip will take (4 Hours Max) timings: 8 am – 3:30 am) this SAFARI JEEP ROUTE OPEn after this you can reach GOA (Panjim 50kms , 2hrs drive)

Hi, thanks for non tiring reply to all questions…but still i have few questions 1. is it good to get down at KULEM or CASTLE ROCK, if coming from Hyd 2. does the jeep from Kulem to dudhsagar -wait only for 1 hr? so cant we pay for 1 way (250) and leave jeep? 3. i think we also have dudhsagar station… which train stops to and fro at this stn and i think all trains stop at various distance from fall for break check.,. so can you tell what all trains pass through this route..preferably with time. i could not find this info on google.

1. It would be better to get down at Kulem. 2. The jeep doesn’t necessarily wait for just an hour. It can wait for even around 2 hours. Like if you are in a group of 7-8 people and you book a jeep, you can ask the driver to wait for the longer times at the falls. However, it might not be possible for one way. Because the jeep has to return empty and that’s not a good business for them. 3. Sorry for the train information… I also do not have much ideas about the train running on that route…..

Please tell if we take a jeep from kulem and reach Dudhsagar view point, from there (view point) is it possible to walk upto the railway bridge which is just at the middle of the fall. How much time would it take to walk from view point to the railway bridge?

The water wont be as much as after the monsoon. Since it’s almost raining a bit that side so yes, there should be enough water and a nice view as well 🙂

Hi manoj, You can have one day trip to this fall if you take a jeep from Kulem and return by the same… For more details follow the blog properly. You can also cover the same on foot but around 25 kms of walking in a single day would be tough… read the blog in detail you will ideas about… yeah single day is possible:

1. Go by jeep and return by jeep to and fro Kulem 2. Go on foot and find a goods train and return by that 3. In worst case, return on foot

I along with 2 other friends have planned to do this trek in the month of July. We’ll be travelling from Hyderabad and have a short budget, so could you suggest a good itinerary or atleast shed some light on hotels near kulem, mollem or castle rock which provide accomadation below 1K.

Sir,the jeep charge mentioned here (Rs.450),is it one way or two way.( kulem to dudhsagar & back) At which point the jeep takes us….middle of the waterfall where there is the railway track.

It’s two way… check for the jeep charges, they keep on varying the charges but the differenc should not come much… They will drop around 500 mtr to 1 km before the waterfalls and then you can walk upto there….

Hi Kunal, People go on two wheelers there. However, the bike should be in good condition and it might be difficult to drive with a pillion if it has rained there in past a few days and the road has become muddy

Planning Dudhsagar trek on the 30th of this month. Can you please suggest me in detail if am opting to take Kulem route and jeep trek.

Suggestions on 1. If i could book jeep trek in advance. 2. I want to start this by morning and finish by evening as i cannot miss getting back to Panjim on the same day. 3. If you can pass on any contact numbers on the same. Thank you 🙂

Since the monsoon is over, I wish for you that Jeep track must be opened for the visitors. So, in my knowledge, there are advance bookings for the Jeep. However, once you reach Kulem, ask for the Kulem to Dudhsagar Jeep stand. You can book your slots in the Jeep and they keep on opening once they are full and I am sure on new years days, there should not be any problem waiting or so.

So yeas, if you reach Kulem, lets say around 10, the Jeep would leave you to the falls in an hour (The you will have walk around half an hour to reach to the falls, there is a proper way but little technical). In the meanwhile, the Jeep driver would wait for you for an hour or so. After you enjoy, you can return by the same jeep in another half an hour.

So, yeah its possible to return on the same day to Panjim. No problems at all. But be reminded that its gonna be really crowded on new year, if my guess is not wrong.

I am not sure of this number but this number belongs to some of the tourist center: 91 – 832 – 224132 you can try them.

Yes you can, provided that you are not going in the monsoon and woods that you get are dry enough to give you fire 🙂

we are planning to get down at castle rock and then trek. But we have to catch “goa express” at the night from castle rock or kulem. because we have to reach goa the very next morning.. is there any alternate way?

Hi manish, trekking in the night would not be a good idea because you wont see anything. however, you can camp at the dushsagar at the night and catch the train next morning.

Its possible to complete the trek in a day but might be very exhausting. you really will have to walk fast and if you would be lucky, you might get a goods train to return also.

I have not heard any such kind of cases and chances are very rare as this route is very famous now and wild animals avoid coming to these areas….

Located around 60 kilometres away from Goa, on the Goa and Karnataka border, Dudhsagar waterfall is amongst the five highest waterfalls in India. With a height of around 310m (1017ft) and about 100ft in width, Dudhsagar Waterfalls displays a tremendous power of nature, creating a sight worth capturing. This glorious waterfall is one of the best places to visit near Goa , owing to its charismatic natural beauty and striking environment. This gorgeous four-tier waterfall became more popular after its presence in the blockbuster movie- Chennai Express in 2013. It is now one of the most popular spots for tourists visiting Goa and nearby places. The Dudhsagar waterfalls in Goa initially look like a pour out of milk, coming down from the mountain, later transforming into gushing cascades. Here’s everything you should know about Dudhsagar Waterfalls.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls – History

The most famous waterfall in Goa, Dudhsagar means the Sea of Milk owes its name to a myth. This was the favourite place of a beautiful princess who used to have a bath in a lake near the Mandovi River every day. After the bath, she would often drink sweetened milk from a golden jug. Once, while having a bath in the lake, she noticed a handsome prince gazing at her. At that moment, she poured the milk from the Golden jug to create a white virtual curtain in front of her, obstructing the view through crystal clear water of the lake. According to the myth, the milk still cascades down the mountain slope in the honour of princess’s virtues.  

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfall in Goa

The Dudhsagar waterfall is situated in the Western Ghats close to Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa. A trek to Dudhsagar will allow you to witness the natural wonder of the Sanctuary jungle. This sanctuary is home to many animals and birds, including wild dogs, Bengal tiger, grey-headed myna, spotted deer, bear, leopards, bison, and different varieties of butterflies - lime butterfly, Mormon, tailed jay, to name a few.  There are different ways to reach this waterfall that include:

There are two trains available on daily basis, but they are not directly connected to the fall. Kulem and Castle Rock are the nearest railway stations from where travellers can trek to waterfalls. This mode of reaching the waterfall is strongly recommended for adventure and trek lovers. However, those who are travelling with aged people and children should avoid using this option.

Situated on the coast of Goa and Karnataka, Dudhsagar waterfall can be reached by road too. In case you are travelling to this place from Panjim - the capital of Goa or any other location in North Goa, then you would be required to go by road. You can hire private taxis that will take you to the entry of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary near the village – Mollem on Goa- Karnataka Border. From this spot, you can take the official management’s Jeeps to reach the waterfalls.

Note: Visitors are allowed to spend a total of 1 hour 30 minutes after reaching this famous waterfall in Goa. This time is applied from the time you are dropped at the parking spot, till the time the allocated jeep returns.

Best Time to Visit Dudhsagar Falls

You will witness the true magnificence of nature during the monsoon. So, July to October or during monsoon and after monsoon is an ideal time to visit this waterfall. However, the water level is high during monsoon, thus you need to be very careful and take extra precautions while visiting this place. If you wish to make the most of your visit, it is wise to visit this waterfall in Goa, after the monsoon, between October to February. This is the time when trekking to a waterfall is not risky. Also, the water level is moderate and the trail is easier and more accessible in this season.

Dudhsagar Falls – Timings

The gate to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary opens and 7 AM in the morning and remains open till 5 PM. It is wise to reach there on time to get the whole day to enjoy the striking sights of Dudhsagar waterfall.

Tambdi surla temple.

One of the oldest historical places in Goa, the Tambadi Surla temple attracts tourists with its old-fashioned and intricate design. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple was structured using materials like grey-black talc chlorite soapstone, giving it a fascinating shine. The Tambdi Surla Temple is the only existing construction of the Kadamba Yadava dynasty. When you visit Dudhsagar Waterfall, do not forget to explore the historical legacy of Goa.

Devil’s Canyon

Also known as Devcharacho Kond, Devil’s Canyon is a river gorge, situated around 1 km from the fall. Mollem National Park

One more attraction near Dudhsagar waterfall is Mollem National Park. Earlier a game sanctuary, the Mollem National Park was declared a sanctuary in 1969. How to Visit Dudhsagar Waterfall: A Complete Guide

Dudhsagar Waterfall is one of the most stunning natural attractions in Goa. It is a four-tiered waterfall that plunges from 310 meters (1017 feet) and spans 30 meters (98 feet) in width. But How to Visit Dudhsagar Waterfall, which also as “Sea of Milk” in Hindi, as the fall resembles a stream of milk flowing down from the sky. There are no direct buses to Dudhsagar Waterfall, but you can take a bus from Panaji or Madgaon to Kulem or Mollem, the nearest town to the waterfall. The bus fare is around 100 rupees (1.4 USD) per person. The bus journey takes about two hours. From Kulem or Mollem, you can take a jeep safari or trek to the waterfall (more on later).

If you have your car or rent one, you can drive to Dudhsagar Waterfall from Panaji or Madgaon. The road is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Panaji and 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Madgaon. The road condition is good until Mollem but becomes rough and narrow afterward. You will need a four-wheel drive vehicle to navigate the terrain. You can park your car at Mollem or Kulem and then take a jeep safari or trek to the waterfall (more on that later).

If you feel adventurous, bike to Dudhsagar Waterfall from Panaji or Madgaon. The bike distance is similar to the car distance, but you will need more time and stamina to cover it. You can rent a bike from various places in Goa for around 300 rupees (4 USD) daily. You will also need a helmet and a valid driving license. You can park your bike at Mollem or Kulem and then take a jeep safari or trek to the waterfall (more on that later).

Once you reach Kulem or Mollem, you have two options to access Dudhsagar Waterfall: by jeep safari or by trekking. Both options have advantages and disadvantages so you can choose according to your preference, budget, and fitness level.

Jeep Safari

The jeep safari is the easiest and most convenient way to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall. You can book a jeep safari from Kulem or Mollem for around 400 rupees (5 USD) per person, which includes the entry fee to the national park and a life jacket for swimming at the waterfall. The jeep safari takes about an hour and covers a distance of 12 kilometers (7 miles). 

The jeep ride is bumpy and thrilling as it crosses several streams and rocky patches. You can enjoy the scenic views of the forest and the river as you approach the waterfall. The jeep will drop you at a point near the waterfall, from where you have to walk for about 10 minutes to reach the base of the waterfall. You can spend about an hour swimming, taking photos, and relaxing at the waterfall. The jeep will pick you up and return to Kulem or Mollem.

When is the best time to visit Dudhsagar Waterfall?

The best time to visit Dudhsagar Waterfall is during the monsoon season, from mid-June to September, when the waterfall is at its peak flow and splendor. The waterfall is also open from October to May, but the water level is lower and the flow is less impressive. However, the weather is more pleasant and the crowd is less during this time.

How much does it cost to visit Dudhsagar Waterfall?

It will cost you around 50 rupees (0.7 USD) per person, which is the entry fee to the national park. You will also need to pay for your train, bus, car, or bike fare to reach Kulem or Mollem, which varies depending on your starting point and preference.

In the last few years, the Dudhsagar waterfalls have become a popular weekend destination, especially for those travelling from cities like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore (all thanks to a certain Bollywood movie). Most tourists to Goa these days make the Dudhsagar waterfalls a part of their itinerary for Goa.

Because they are so huge, there are a number of ways to visit Dudhsagar waterfalls. They can also be visited from different location via different routes. All of these options can make planning a trip to the Dudhsagar waterfalls really confusing. If you’ve got just a weekend, you can’t afford to lose a day in a messed up travel plan. We hear you!

This guide to the Dudhsagar waterfalls will break down all your options for a visit to these waterfalls. This guide covers trekking to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, as well as doing the jeep safari, on a self-planned trip or a package group tour. This guide will help you plan any kind of visit to Dudhsagar waterfalls.

But first up, the thunderous cascading star of the visit – the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

A picture speaks a thousand words. But even a thousand pictures fall short of what hit us when we first laid our eyes on these Dudhsagar waterfalls.

We have visited the Dudhsagar waterfalls twice:

• By trekking over the railway tracks independently, in the monsoon
• By taking a jeep safari tour to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

In this guide, we will address all the issues we faced while visiting these waterfalls.

There are three different ways of visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls:

• Trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – most popular in the monsoon months (June to September). Jump directly to this part .
• Jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – starts post-monsoon (typically operates from October end to May). Jeep safaris for 2019 have already started. Jump directly to this part .
• A third not so popular way of visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls – for seasoned trekkers.

Where are the Dudhsagar waterfalls located?

The Dudhsagar waterfalls ( Dudh : milk, Sagar : sea) are located on the Goa-Karnataka border. They are part of the Western Ghats – a mountain range in Southwest India.

It is a four-tiered waterfall with different ways to reach each level. The mountains from which the Dudhsagar waterfalls emerge are in Karnataka and the forest in which they fall is in Goa.

The base of these waterfalls is in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in the Mollem district of South Goa. It is a lush green sanctuary, characteristic to the forests of the Western Ghats.

How to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls?

Because they straddle the two states of Goa and Karnataka, and because they are so big (they are among the highest waterfalls in India), there are multiple ways to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

• You can take the train to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
• You can reach near the Dudhsagar waterfalls by car or bus .
• You can also trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
• Or, you can reach these waterfalls by jeep .

How to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls by train?

• You can take the train to the Dudhsagar waterfalls either from the Goa side or the Karnataka side.
• The Amravati Express or Goa Express from Pune to Kulem.
• The Vasco-Kulem Daily Passenger runs every day from Madgaon/ Vasco in Goa to Kulem. If you are already in Goa, go to the Madgaon or Vasco railway stations and board this train. Watch out: The station just before Kulem is Kalem. The names look and sound familiar. We have seen travellers mix up Kulem and Kalem . Do not get off the train at Kalem. Kulem is the last station for the passenger train.
• The direct trains from Bangalore to Castle Rock ( Yesvantpur Vasco da Gama Express / Velankanni Vasco da Gama Express / Chennai Central Vasco da Gama Weekly) do not run daily.
• There are several trains from Bangalore to Londa Junction and take a connecting train from Londa to Castle Rock . You can also take a taxi from Londa. The distance of Londa to Castle Rock is around 30 km.

How to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls by car?

• The Dudhsagar waterfalls are not directly accessible by road, which means you can not drive your car all the way to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
• You will have to drive up to Kulem. From Kulem you can either trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls or take a jeep safari via the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Distance from North Goa (Baga) to Kulem is 80 km.
• Distance from Madgaon to Kulem is 45 km.
• Bangalore to Kulem is a driving distance of 539 km. Once off the national highway 48, you will drive towards Mollem. The road is carved through the Mollen National Park.
• If you are driving down from Pune or Mumbai, you can take the national highway 48 to Belgaum. Then get off the highway and drive towards Mollem via Khanapur.

Your mode of transport primarily depends on whether you want to trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls or take the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls

• In Goa, your trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls will start by climbing up the railway tracks from Kulem. You will climb up the Braganza ghat, crossing several tunnels and reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The trekking distance from Kulem to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is 11 km . It is a slightly uphill walk.
• If you start in Karnataka, you will trek over the railway tracks from Castle Rock. The trekking distance from Castle Rock to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is roughly 14 km .
• You can get off the Amravati Express at Sonalium which is an unscheduled stop. At Sonalium, you will have to climb down the ladder and jump off the train. There is no platform here. From Sonalium you have to walk roughly 3 km to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls .

Start of the trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls

It’s fun walking through this section of the railway tracks in the middle of the forest through numerous tunnels. But you have to be mindful the whole while to the sound of approaching trains. By trekking over the railway tracks, you reach the middle tier of the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

The railway tracks trace a horseshoe (U) over the valley approaching the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The first glimpse of the waterfalls is, hence, from across the valley.

Our guide knew the exact point at which we would see the waterfalls. When the train got there, he started shouting “camera ready, viewpoint, viewpoint”.

We readied our cameras. The train slowly (and extremely steadily) approached the viewpoint – and we froze. We just couldn’t take our eyes off the majestic Dudhsagar waterfalls. At that moment, we couldn’t care about the camera, the photograph, the viewpoint or anything else.

The Dudhsagar waterfalls, even from that far across the valley, had hypnotised us.

At this point, you can trek down from the tracks into the forest of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Companies which offer trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls, often take this route. Through the forest, you reach the bottom tier of these waterfalls. You can return to Kulem via the forest route.

Important point note: This trekking option is not available in the monsoon. The Mandovi river, over which the Dudhsagar waterfalls are located swells in the monsoon and flow with an enormous force.

You can combine trek and travel by train to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls

• Dudhsagar Railway station is part of the Southwest Railway division of the Indian Railways. Passenger trains do not stop at Dudhsagar railway station. There is no platform here. You can get off the train only if the train gets a signal at Dudhsagar. You will then need to climb down the ladder and jump onto the ground. Words of caution: You need to be fit enough to jump off the train directly on the railway tracks. Travelling with babies or dependent seniors is a strict no-no.
• If you manage to get off at the Dudhsagar railway station, you will have to walk back for around 1 km to reach the waterfalls. Be warned: Boarding and deboarding at the Dudhsagar railway station are officially not allowed by the Railway Police.  
• If you take the Amravati Express or the Vasco Kulem passenger in the morning, you can easily return to Madgaon by boarding the Amravati Express from Sonalium ( doesn’t operate on Sundays ).

Our journey to Dudhsagar waterfalls

We travelled on a passenger train from Madgaon to Kulem. At Kulem, we boarded a goods train. Some local guys agreed to be our guides and fixed us up with the motorman of the train that was going to leave soon. We stood on the edge holding onto the railing outside the engine of the goods train. Travelling up the steep Braganza pass on the seamless tracks through a lush green forest in a rhythmic motion, with the wind in our faces, we felt one with nature!

From a distance, it looks like the surroundings of the Dudhsagar waterfalls are covered in clouds. It is actually just the spray from the waterfalls. Its momentum is so strong, it actually crosses over to the other side of the railway tracks. We had to put our camera away to prevent it from being sprayed over.

Rules about trekking to Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks

Before we go ahead, read this: Walking on the railway tracks is banned by the Railway Police. You are officially not allowed to access the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks.

Since the ban was put in place, we have received contradictory feedback from our readers who visited the Dudhsagar waterfalls individually. While some managed to easily walk over the railway tracks, others were stopped by the Railway Police and forced to turn back. We have also heard narrations of Railway Police standing near the Dudhsagar waterfalls in the monsoon and ensuring no one gets off the train.

When we travelled to the Dudhsagar waterfalls by the goods train, the ban was NOT in place and we did not face any problems.

If you are planning a self-organised trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, there will be some uncertainty.

Jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

A jeep safari through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is the recommended and the officially permitted way to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Why we chose a tour to visit Dudhsagar waterfalls by jeep safari?

“Jeeps cross several streams through a dense forest”, we had heard of the drive to the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. This line had stayed with us ever since.

To visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls along this route via the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, we had to first reach Kulem. It’s a roughly 2-hr drive of around 80 km from Baga/Calangute to Kulem.

Once you cross the bridge to Panaji and take the road to Ponda, the winding road starts. It’s a beautiful forested route, through the hilly villages of Goa. This isn’t your typical landscape of Goa of the sand and waves.

We didn’t feel like venturing on such a long undulating route on a bike. And it’s a well-known fact that cabs can be prohibitively expensive in Goa. We felt it made sense to sign up for a jeep safari tour to Dudhsagar waterfalls.

What all did our tour to Dudhsagar waterfalls include?

• Pick up and drop right our hotel on the Baga-Calangute road in North Goa
• Tickets to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – cost of the jeep safari and life jacket (which is compulsory). We had to pay separate camera charges at the gate of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Local Goan lunch at a spice plantation
• Sightseeing in old Goa

It was a good deal, freeing up our time to soak in the sights of Goa we weren’t familiar with.

The driver called us the previous night to confirm the pickup location and time. On the day of our jeep safari, we received another call from the driver ten minutes prior to our pick up time, to ask if we were ready. Promptly at 6 AM, we were picked up from the Baga-Calangute road, 2 minutes away from our Hotel Santiago Resort . We were impressed with this promptness of service, right at the start.

Everything about Kulem suggests that it has been woken up from its long hibernation by the sudden fame of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Otherwise, it’s one of those little villages that minds its own business.

Because Kulem is at the base of the Braganza ghat, long-distance trains have to halt at this railway station to attach an additional locomotive to pull them up towards the Dudhsagar waterfalls and further up to Castle Rock in Karnataka.

These days you see a series of breakfast joints no bigger than holes in walls but overflowing with tourists – both Indian and international. Our minibus dropped us at the parking lot in Kulem from where we walked to the Dudhsagar taxi stand (just outside the Kulem railway station). While we had our breakfast (does the needful but don’t expect anything much), our driver cum tour guide went ahead to sort out our jeep tickets.

The jeep safari for Dudhsagar waterfalls starts from the entrance to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Kulem. These jeep safaris are organised by the Goa Forest Department. They take you to the bottom of the waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

If you have driven down to Kulem, you can park your vehicle in the parking lot which is a 2-minute walk from the Kulem jeep safari ticket counter. The Kulem railway station is also not more than 5 minutes away.

Not surprisingly (this is India after all!), chaos reigned at the taxi stand. It was a huge relief having someone take care of these logistics for us and not having to scamper in the unruly semblance of a queue. Instead, we busied ourselves in some people watching. Some excited, other restless, everyone waiting. Some local grocery stores were opening up. Only in Goa, you have a grocery store clubbed in with a “wine shop”!

Meanwhile, our driver had split us into groups of seven. And instructed us, repeatedly, to not disperse. “If the group is not together, there will be grave problems”. We appreciated that he was taking his responsibility to send us to the Dudhsagar waterfalls so seriously. After around 30 minutes, we were finally seated in our jeeps to take us to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

If you aren’t taking a tour for the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls…

We recommend you reach the ticket counter at Kulem as early as you can.

What’s the hurry? Allow us to explain.

• The charge for a jeep to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, which seats 7, is Rs. 2800. If you aren’t a group of seven, you’ll have to form a group with other solo travellers or smaller groups. It is not advisable to go to the jeep safari ticket counter without a pre-formed group. The staff here doesn’t help you with group formation.
• Chaos looms here in the group formation stage. This was one of the main reasons we were happy to have taken a tour of the Dudhsagar waterfalls since our driver cum guide took care of all these logistics.
• The Dudhsagar waterfalls close at 4.30 PM. To make sure that all vehicles and tourists are out of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary by this time, they stop the sale of tickets by roughly 2 PM.
• Dudhsagar waterfalls are no longer just a weekend destination. People vacationing in Goa also visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls these days. International tourists make a huge chunk of the visitors. This popularity of the Dudhsagar waterfalls means that there is quite a rush for the jeep safari even on a weekday.

Your best chances of a peaceful visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls are by reaching the ticket counter at Kulem at the earliest. We would recommend being there by 9 AM.

If you are committed to being among the first ones to enter the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to have the Dudhsagar waterfalls all to yourself, we recommend staying somewhere closer to Kulem.

The total ticket for the jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls is:

• Cost of the jeep safari – Rs.2800 per jeep, seats 7
• Rent for the life jacket (compulsory) – Rs. 30
• Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary entry fee – Rs. 50
• Additional charges for the camera.

Inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary on a jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls

The dirt track starts right after we left the Kulem taxi stand. An arc saying Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary welcomes you in. The jeeps halt here to pay the sanctuary entry fees. This is also where you pay the camera fees.

Interestingly, among the list of attractions listed by the forest department, “Nature all through the route” makes an appearance! The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is a plastic-free zone. Our jeep driver asked us if we had any plastic bottles with us. You have to report the count here and on the way back they ensure you’re carrying them all out. Do not leave any plastic objects behind, at the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

We were now in a dense forest. This is part of the western ghats is mostly evergreen. We were just settling into the unsettling feel of the rickety drive when we were faced with a huge river. Our driver deftly drove the jeep through this water body without even a slight flinch. The seven of us were, however, holding onto the seats in front, as if our lives depended on it.

This route to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls opens only in October after the monsoon ends. The river was swollen enough to give us goosebumps even as the water levels had started receding. We shuddered to think what it would look like in the monsoon!

A few locals take tourists on bike rides through the sanctuary to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls in the monsoon. The forest department doesn’t officially approve of this. And after seeing the might of the river in late November, we do not recommend venturing out in the rains to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

The dirt track continued with the Dudhsagar river now flowing to our left. We were driving through the stillness of the forest now. It was late morning, around 10 AM. The birds had retreated. The mild breeze rustled some leaves. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the end of the motorable track. We saw a temple towards the end and a tribal settlement of a handful of huts. We were surprised that someone actually lived here inside the forest.

The driver now gave us the life jackets (these are compulsory) and told us to be back in an hour. There’s a watchtower here which gave us the complete view of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. But this time we were more interested in being in its waters at the waterfall’s base pool.

The walk through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls

A flight of steps took us to the floor of the forest and we began our 15-20 minute walk to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. It’s a rocky uneven patch. The rocks can be slippery, so appropriate footwear is recommended. It’s an easy walk and anyone with moderate fitness can easily reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls. However, it is not suitable for those needing wheelchair assistance.

Playful monkeys gave us company throughout the walk. By now, they are quite used to having humans around. They might even give you a nice pose for your picture, but please do not feed them . They live in their natural habitat, the forest, and are smart enough to gather their own food, without human assistance. Let’s not ruin that pleasure for them by introducing them to the evils of chips and the likes.

We crossed a small wooden flat bridge and got the view of the Dudhsagar waterfalls cascading down. The railway bridge is clearly visible.

We made our way through the rocks, found a safe (and dry) place to keep our shoes, tucked our camera bag under a bigger rock and stepped into the water. The freshness of the cold water at the base of the Dudhsagar waterfalls hit us like a bolt.

From within the pool, only the bottommost tier of the Dudhsagar waterfalls is seen. This itself can qualify as a nice big waterfall to chill under. The pool is safe to swim and you can reasonably easily reach under the waterfall. Even with the sun above our heads, the water, however, is pretty cold! The water is also clear enough to see several mid-sized fish swimming in.

The force of the waterfall in the monsoon is prohibitively massive to feel anything other than the spray of its water at a distance of several meters. We were delighted that we had finally stepped foot in the waters of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. We spent a long while soaking in the natural pool.

It struck us after a while that none of our co-passengers on this tour to the Dudhsagar waterfalls could be seen around. We had lost track of time and imagined our jeep driver fuming with rage at our delay. We got into dry clothes (changed at a pretty sketchy arrangement, right there on the rocks) and ran through the rocks and forest.

The driver smiled as he saw us run. He probably was used to his passengers losing track of time at the Dudhsagar waterfalls. He knew the time wasn’t enough. But he had to stick to the schedule to enable smooth functioning of the Dudhsagar jeep safari tours. We took the same route out, through the dirt track and the Dudhsagar river.

Tips for going on a jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

• You have to reach the ticket counter for the jeep safari in Kulem early in the morning.
• We started from North Goa at 6 AM. By the time we entered the sanctuary, some jeeps were already returning back from the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
• The Dudhsagar waterfalls close at 4.30 PM and tickets are not sold after roughly 2 PM.
• It’s best to have a pre-decided group of 7 before you buy your tickets so you don’t waste time waiting for your jeep to fill in.
• To avoid all this logistical management, we are glad we pre-booked our jeep safari tour for the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
• Wear comfortable footwear on this journey as it involves a 15-20 minutes walk through the rocky forest patch.
• Life jackets are compulsory and should be worn before entering the pool at the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
• Women can feel free to wear a swimming costume inside the pool at the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Sketchy changing facilities do exist near the pool.
• Toilets are available inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Their cleanliness is a whole other topic, but the facility exists.
• Locker facilities are not available. If you need to take a camera, it’s security and safety (keeping it dry) is entirely your responsibility.

Lunch at a spice plantation and visiting parts of old Goa after the jeep safari

All the swimming and adventure of the river crossings meant our bellies were all fired up. We drove to a spice plantation that seemed hidden in the forest. A quick tour through the plantation and introduction to the spice trees later, we attacked the lunch spread. Fried mackerel, chicken curry and of course, the Goan feni were waiting for us.

Our return journey took us through the quarters of old Goa, stopping at a few churches. We reached our hotel in North Goa just in time to enjoy an orange streaked sunset at the Baga beach .

Trekking expedition to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

The Youth Hostel Association of India organises an 8-day trekking expedition to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The expedition starts at Panaji. You trek up to the village of Kuveshi via the Dudhsagar waterfalls. This expedition includes a trek to the Tambdi Surla waterfalls as well.

What else is to see in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary besides the Dudhsagar waterfalls?

• While there are several smaller waterfalls particularly just after the monsoon, another bigger waterfall is the Tambdi Surla.
• It is within the Mollem National Park of which the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is a part. However, it is far from the Dudhsagar waterfalls and clubbing the two waterfalls in a day will not be possible.
• Another interesting feature inside the sanctuary and actually close to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is the Devil’s Canyon. Even though it is en route, having a strict schedule means that your jeep driver will not halt at the Devil’s Canyon.
• We recommend hiring a local guide and planning a separate visit than the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The guide can take you to the Tambdi Surla waterfalls as well as the Devil’s Canyon.

Where can you stay to explore the Dudhsagar waterfalls and the Mollem National Park?

There are a few eco-resorts between Mollem and Kulem which are a perfect place to stay if you want to take your time exploring the Mollem National Park. Most of these are located midway to the Dudhsagar waterfalls and the Tambdi Surla waterfalls.

Some options to stay are

• Nature’s Nest : A perfect spot for those into birding. Day trips to Dudhsagar and Tambdi Surla waterfalls are easily possible. A place to disconnect from the world, no Wifi and mobile phone network can be a problem in these hills.
• Jungle Book : A unique little stay option. Excursions into the National Park are easily possible. These are nearer to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
• Dudhsagar Farmstay : You can while away your time within this property (Wifi and a natural water swimming pool!), this place is also equidistant from the Dudhsagar waterfalls and Tambdi Surla.

Castle Rock – a dreamy hamlet ahead of the Dudhsagar waterfalls

A visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls should not end with just a visit to the waterfalls. Because further ahead is Castle Rock, a town that looks like it’s emerged straight out of a storybook. Where goods trains are the most common mode of transport. And the locals seem unaware of the hidden gems their town (hamlet, really!) has to offer.

The name “Castle Rock” was inviting enough and a 30-40 minute train ride ahead got us there. When we got off the train at Castle Rock, the station master there was surprised. He assumed we were there by mistake. He vehemently insisted there was nothing to see in Castle Rock and asked us to leave for Dudhsagar waterfalls!

Castle Rock was a sleepy little hill town. The Castle Rock railway station seemed to be the only reason the town existed. All the infrastructure belonged to the Indian Railways and being a Sunday, everything was shut. Apart from these railway buildings, the place is a small village. Families keep poultry at homes and they cook in wood-fired stoves.

It felt like we were part of a story, wandering around in a magical land in search of a treasure. And sure enough, we found one, in the form of a board saying “Castle Rock Adventure Camp” run by the Karnataka government. “Discover a new trail every time” was their charming tagline!

We followed the tree-lined misty trail. It eventually led us to the fully functional campsite – that apparently no one knew about!

There were a couple of cabins for stay, each equipped with 12 bunk beds. The outdoor seating and dining arrangements were at the perfect vantage points. We even met the trained staff, who took care of food and security.

On that cold misty afternoon, it looked really picturesque. Had we known of this place earlier, we would have definitely planned to stay here for a night at least, after our visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Visit to the Spice Plantations near Dudhsagar waterfalls

The cool temperatures on these hills of the western ghats mean that the weather here is conducive to grow spices. After your jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, you can have lunch at one of the many spice plantations in the vicinity. These plantations often organise a tour of the spice garden followed by a Goan lunch, a taste of the famous drink of Goa, the feni , included. You can also buy some farm fresh spices from these spice plantations.

After researching a lot on the web, last year I visited Dudh sagar falls passing by through train from Madgaon to Castle Rock (Vasco Howrah Exp – 18048, De. 07:50 Ar. 09:20) and return from Castle Rock to Badhaon (KCG Vasco Exp – 17603 De. 11:30 Ar. 13:55) on Thursday because you have a proper passenger train only on Thursday both up and down to get you through the Dudhsagar Falls. You should not depend on Freight trains as their timetable is not fixed. I also had an option of trek from Kulem to Dudhsagar but my hard luck, none of my friends agreed. However you should keep all trecking clothes, shoes and abandunt water with you, for this I have a number Mr. PURUSHOTTAM 8975745140. It was good luck that the railway track was open because a day before I visited there happened a landslide and the work was in progress.

Great post. I had visited the falls in May 2013 via the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and I am planning to visit again this May end. However, this time, I would like to take the train route from Madgaon. Can you tell us whether walking on the tracks are allowed / will be allowed in May this year? Also, which would be the closest station to the falls from where we can enjoy a good view as well as find a place to sit and have packed lunch? Lastly, how would the return journey to Madgaon be and from where can we make arrangements to board a train?

The Dudhsagar waterfalls are inside a wildlife sanctuary and we are pretty certain barbecues aren’t officially allowed. Even if there weren’t any official rules about this, a barbecue inside a wildlife sanctuary is something we would NOT RECOMMEND.

Is trekking along tracks open now. We are planning to go there on 7th Jan 2k18 from Bangalore and get down at castle Rock through Vasco Da Gama express. Is trains available to return back to castle Rock.

Walking on the railway tracks is officially banned. You can visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary. Tickets are available at Kulem, at the taxi stand outside the railway station.

What is the distance from Sonalium station to Dudhsagar bridge by walking and can I get train to Sonalium from Goa ? Also please advose currently can we see good fall, I am planning to go there on 25th November.

It is a leisure 40-minute walk from Sonalium to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. If you are allowed to get on the railway track, you can board a train from Sonalium to get back to Madgaon (that’s what we had done). Another alternative is going through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary by buying the tickets in Kulem. The waterfalls in November will be much reduced than in the monsoon, but the drive in the forest and the lower part of the falls where you can also dip in the waters is fantastic.

Is there locker facility and Cloak rooms available near dudhsagar falls?

Locker facility is not available here. You’ll have to leave everything in the car. Even plastic is banned beyond 4WD taxi stand.

Hi All, We are planning to go to visit dudhsagar falls around September mid-end 2017 from pune. Only option seems feasible is train & then walk. Does anyone know whether Goa express stops at dudhsagar or sonalium station? Also, as an alternate, whether to walk till falls from kulem or castle rock?

Our contacts at Dudhsagar have told us that this year the railway police have banned people from walking on the tracks. You can visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls by accessing the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary from Kulem.

May I know whether car parking is available in Kulem or not

Such a nice blog … so much information about doodhsagar …. guys I m planning to visit this Aug’17 by railway track …. I m planning to catch a train from madgaon to kollem or sonalium and from there I will walk through the railway tracks to doodhsagar …. I have just one query … after reaching kollem or sonalium, whether I will be permitted to walk through the tracks or not ?? some of the below post I ve seen that, CRPF is not allowing to walk through the tracks … do u ve this information, what is current situation over there ? …. Hey Rupam, the railway police have been closing the track for walking every monsoon. But you will know the exact situation only closer to your date. We suggest you touch base again in the monsoon and we will update you about the situation after talking to our local contacts there.

Hello Muniraj, yes – the railway police had banned the access tot he Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks for security reasons. But we have been told that post monsoon, it will be opened again.

I would like to know if November the falls would run dry and doesn’t make sense to go there?? Completely understand the monsoons is the best time but unable to go now and looking at your pictures want to see it soon.

November is a good time to see the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Esp this year, since the monsoon has been great and falls are in full flow!

We have no idea about any cottage or accommodation near Kulem. Your best bet for finding information regarding this would be to contact the forest department’s office there and ask. We do not have the numbers however. Wish you a happy travel experience to the Dushsagar waterfalls!

Is this an only way to reach Dudhsagar from Mumbai? I have been told that Amravati Express too passes somewhere near from Dudhsagar. Do you have any idea about it?

Hello Swapnil, monsoon is the best time to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls. You can take the goods train from either Kulem or Castle Rock (depending on whether you are traveling from Goa or KArnatake respectively) and get off at an earlier signal to avoid too much trekking and yet experience some adventure. Rains should not hamper your visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls by train.

Wish you a great travel to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. There is probably a canteen at the Kulem railway station. However it doesnt open early in the morning. More food options are available only at Madgaon on the Goa side of the Braganza ghat. We recommend carrying food supplies from there on the way to the Dudhsagar waterfalls and not relying on food options on the way.

Hello Ankur, yes tickets are available for Kulem from Madgaon. An alternate way to get to Dudhsagar waterfalls from Kulem is to walk through the railway tracks over Braganza ghats. On weekends in monsoon, you will find groups doing this. There might be passenger trains going up at your time which can halt at Sonalium. From there its only a short walk to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Friend, you have written that take a Railway train like Amravati Express and get off at Sonalium. But when we saw the railway timetable, there is no stop at Sonalium for Amravati Express. I want to know whether the train Amaravati express really stops at Sonalium so that we can get down at Sonalium and trek to Doodhsagar. Kindly clarify, thank you.

Hello K N Nagaraja, the station Sonalium is probably not mentioned because Sonalium is not a full fledged station. You can not but ticket at Sonalium. When we boarded at Sonalium on the way back from the waterfalls, we bought the tickets for the journey at Kulem.

Hello Parag, we saw a lot of families on a day picnic traveling to and fro from Castle Rock to the Dudhsagar waterfalls in a goods train. If you intend to go back to Hyd from the Dudhsagar waterfalls (and not go towards Madgaon), then there is no point going towards Kulem. Stay on the Karnataka side of Dudhsagar.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls Trek, Tambdi Surla | Hyderabad

The  Sea of Milk  as they call it, Dudhsagar, is a trek to savor. The waterfall located in the middle of majestic Western Ghats is surrounded by lush greenery. Dudhsagar is the  fourth largest waterfall  in India at a height of more than  1000 feet . 

The trek starts at Kulem railway station, adjacent to the railway track and through the forest sometimes. The  22 km up and down trek  of Dudhsagar falls usually takes  6 to 7 hours  to finish in a leisurely way. The muddy trails, sticky paths, dense forest , streams  to cross – we have it all during this amazing trek.

There is a natural pool at the bottom of the falls where we are allowed to take a dip with  life jackets  when the flow is not high. Dudhsagar is so huge that a moving  Train  passing on a railway bridge across the backdrop of waterfalls  appears like a toy !

Dudhsagar is a place where one can truly experience  nature in all its glory.  A relaxing train journey back home is what you exactly need to cherish the  unforgettable image  of Dudhsagar on your mind.

• Check in to our stay. For now, we shall give 1 or 2 rooms based on group size just to freshen up and put luggage. Later in the evening, we will assign more rooms for sleeping.
• Grab your packed lunch and get set for an easy trek to the offbeat Tamdi Surla Waterfalls located in the deep jungle.
• Explore beautiful Tambdi Surla Temple and the Surla River before the trek. It usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours of trek to reach waterfalls.
• Initial part of the trek is easy. We need to cross many small streams to move ahead. Last 1 Km of trek is steep.
• Play in the ice-cold water, get wet, get muddy, take a lot of pictures.
• Have your lunch overlooking the beautiful waterfalls surrounded by thick greenery.
• Trek back to the starting point, journey back to the homestay by evening.
• Spend some leisurely time chitchatting and playing some group games. Our trek leader will organize lots of fun activities among the group.
• Finish your dinner and retire for the day early.

Day 2 - Schedule

• Wake up call at 4:45 AM by our trek leader.
• Quick freshen up and get set for the mighty Dudhsagar Trek with trekking shoes, raincoat, armed with hand sanitizer to fight leeches.
• Safely put your luggage at our homestay, take the bumpy offroad jeep ride to the trek starting point in Collem.
• Trek through the muddy trails, dense forest, along railway track, cross river streams to reach the big daddy of waterfalls The Dudhsagar. Finish breakfast en route.
• Enjoy the view of the majestic falls almost dipping down from another world.
• From the bottom of the falls, watch as a Train passes by on the railway bridge at the top.
• Play in the water if allowed at the time.
• After spending a good amount of time appreciating the natural wonder, Dudhsagar, trek back to Collem by early afternoon.
• You can have quick Lunch at a local restaurant after the trek.
• Get back to rooms, grab your luggage, start the journey back towards Hubli.
• It takes 3.5 hours journey to reach Hubli from our stay. So you have to be on time as per your Trek Leader’s instructions.
• Catch your return train in the evening.

Day 3 - Schedule

• Reach home in the morning.
• Share your thrilling Dudhsagar trek story with your friends and family

What to Expect

• This trip involves  basic facilities  in terms of food, travel, and stay without any luxury, whatsoever.
• This is a group trip with shared model. It may not suit everyone – especially for those expecting privacy and comfort. It best suits for people who wish to  socialize .
• Please do not book this trip if you are not okay with above points.

Special Notes:

• To enter Goa border, you will need to carry a COVID negative RTPCR test report taken within 72 hours.
• Otherwise, a Rapid Antigen Test will be done at Goa border at a cost of 270 INR per person
• There is no luxury involved in this entire trip. This is a backpacking trip with basic facilities.

Seasonal variations:

• June to Sept (monsoon months): Thick clouds, persistent rains, leeches, plenty of water in Dudhsagar falls. We may not be allowed to take a dip in the natural pool because of the fierce force of water. Trekking is allowed in these 3 months only, as Jeeps which are operated by the local tourist boards, cannot pass by the streams. 
• Oct to Dec (winter): As rains reduce, Jeeps take the turn of ferrying people to Dudhsagar. Trekking is banned at Dudhsagar once Jeep path clears. However, another waterfall called Tambdi Surla is good to trek in these months. You may refer to another trip itinerary named: “Dudhsagar Jeep Trails with Tambdi Surla Waterfalls trek.”
• Jan to May (winter, summer): As Dushsagar is a seasonal waterfall, water levels would have considerably reduced. Better to avoid Dushsagar in these months.

• Hyderabad Deccan Railway Station: 3:50 PM
• Begumpet Railway Station: 4 PM
• Lingampalli Railway Station: 4:30 PM

Drop Points:

• Same as Pick up points above (9:30 AM as per Train schedule)

Things to carry

• Toiletries, moisturizer, light towel, lip balm, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, 
• A lightweight large Backpack for the trip (no suitcase, no trolley)
• A small backpack for the trek (to carry Lunch packet, water bottle, snacks, etc)
• Photo identity proof with address (Aadhar/Passport/Voter ID)
• Poncho or rainproof jacket with a hood (from June to September)
• Track pants, full sleeve T-shirt for the trek
• Cap/Hat (to avoid getting tanned)
• Sunglasses (to keep your eyes fresh)
• Power bank, charger, camera, binoculars (if you wish to)
• Proper water bottle for your trip. You may fill at our homestay
• Disposable garbage covers (To separate used/unused, dry/wet clothes)
• Good grip trekking shoes or sandals
• Your personal medications, if any
• Pair of water wear to take a dip in the waterfalls
• Carrying a handwash/sanitizer/tissues will help during the trip
• Carry your jerkin/sweater – it can get cold at night
• Carry a lil bit of cash for Sunday Lunch, Dinner and misc. Expenses
• Don’t carry expensive items. You are responsible for your own belongings.

Terms & Conditions

• The itinerary is fixed. No special requests to change itinerary/schedule shall be entertained. Do not give advice(s) to the Trip Leader(s) to change the itinerary.
• Cooperate with the organizer(s) in following the schedule set for the day (especially getting up and getting ready in the morning). This will ensure travelers won’t miss out on the real fun part that is traveling.
• Every traveler is responsible for his/her for your own safety. Don’t indulge in any illegal or silly activity that causes harm to you or fellow travelers.
• Do not wander into the forest away from the designated trail for treks. There may be snakes, scorpions, and dangerous animals.
• Unexpected situations: It may happen we do not cover all the places mentioned in the itinerary because of unpredictable reasons like bad weather, landslides, wild animal presence, abrupt blocking of sites by the police/forest department, delay in travel because of an issue with our group itself, traffic conditions, etc. In most cases, if the time permits, the organizer(s) will take travelers to an alternative place. But in some cases, we may have to skip a place altogether.
• Absolutely no littering. We swear to protect our environment.
• No alcohol & smoking during travel, treks, and other outdoor activities. There would be a separate window and space (usually at night) to have these at the campsite/homestay for interested people.
• Travelers are expected to respect each other and help each other. Avoid discussing sensitive matters like sex, politics, and religion/caste/race.
• Using foul or abusive language, eve-teasing, arguing with fellow travelers/organizer(s), and/or involving in the physical assault will not be accepted and will stand a chance of being deserted by the group then and there.
• The event will stand canceled if less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek which will be informed 24 hours before the trip start time.
• Every traveler is expected to sign a liability/waiver form given by the organizer(s) after boarding the vehicle. This liability form will discharge Muddie Trails of any unexpected incident like injury/death/theft etc.

Cancellation & Refund

Cancellation by traveler.

• 50% refund shall be done if you inform us about your cancellation before 48 hours of the event start time. An email has to be sent to [email protected] to raise a cancellation request.
• No refund/postponing is allowed within 48 hours of the event start time whatever is the reason (Health, Accident, Covid, Family crisis, Office issue, or anything else).
• No refund/postponing is allowed for partial payment – booking fee – which is done to book your slot.
• No refund during/after the event.

Cancellation by Muddie Trails

Muddie Trails may decide to cancel the event if there are less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek.

What if we don’t get the minimum number of people for the trip? We have 2 options in this case: Option 1: Complete refund. Option 2: Switch to any other trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.

Cancellation due to external factors

Muddie Trails may have to cancel the event in case of external factors that are beyond our control like Natural Disasters, Extreme Weather Conditions, Red Alerts, Political Disturbances, Bandh/Curfews, Local Issues, Road Blocks, Train cancellations, Covid-19 or any other disease outbreaks etc.

In these scenarios:

• No Refund is allowed.
• 100% trip amount can be used for any other new trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.
• Once you confirm your participation on the new trip, all the above Cancellation policies will apply for the same.

How difficult is Dudhsagar Trek?

It falls under a moderate difficulty level. Even first-timers may attempt this trek. It gives a great experience of trekking in the wet and wild environment of dense rainforest.

How long is Dudhsagar Trek?

It’s about 10 to 11 Km one way. However, it’s not really a steep trek. Anyone with little stamina will be able to do Dudhsagar trek.

Which is the best time to trek Dudhsagar?

The trek is only open from June to Aug (3 months of the year). After this, Jeeps will start operation and trekking will be banned till the end of the season (December).

Dudhsagar Trekking Package from Goa

Dudhsagar fall looks breathtaking and magnificent during monsoon time, This amazing waterfall is located on the Goa-Karnataka border and cascades from a height of 310m, making it an unbelievable experience for those who visit the location during monsoon, when rains hit peak gear. The four-tiered waterfall is just magnificent to watch and resembles as if “white milk” is pouring down the rocks.

Located in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem national park . Tourists are advised to visit this marvel during June-September from Collem on the Goa side and Castle Rock from the Karnataka side.

Trekking is the only way to reach the falls in monsoon as Jeep Safari is not in service during that period. Physical fitness and stamina are essential factors to undertake the trekking expedition which is not more than 10km from the Collem railway station.

Trekking Package from Goa

It will take you roughly 3.30 hours to trek towards the waterfalls . The best time to start the day is by 8.30 am and return by 5.30 pm. Though the path is not steep, it’s tough as you have to walk on the railway track for 6km and you’re through the challenging terrains and the forest route, though lonely, but not dangerous. You also have to counter the heavy rains that greet you. Ensure you have the right rainy ware as well as proper trekking shoes to ensure a safe trip. A local guide at the railway station may be a good assist and you could be charged anywhere between Rs 400 to 500 to escort you to the fall.

Dudhsagar fall is located on the Mandovi River, 60 KM from the town of Panjim. There are many treks organized here during the monsoon months and it is sight to behold. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state of Goa in addition to all the beaches. Trek to Dudhsagar falls would definitely prove to be both adventurous and relaxing as the views are breath-taking. Detailed Itinerary Day 0: Overnight Drive towards Ramnagar We will pick you up from Bangalore at 2030 hrs from a pre-designated spot. We will drive towards Ramnagar, which will be our first stop the next morning before embarking on the next leg of the journey. Day 1: Trek to Dudhsagar Falls We reach Ramnagar in the morning and on arrival, check in to the hotel and have our breakfast. Post this; we drive to castle rock which is 35 KM away. The trek starts from here to Dudhsagar falls which is a 14 KM route. By afternoon we reach Dudhsagar falls and explore the falls area and spend some quality time in and around the water falls. By late afternoon we get ready to participate in tent pitching activity. In the evening we enjoy bonfire (subject to weather conditions) and have dinner and stay overnight in tents. Day 2: Depart for Bangalore We wake up early morning and post breakfast leave for Ramnagar by train which will take approx. 2 hours. On arrival at Ramnagar, we take some time to freshen up and then head back to the city life of Bangalore.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls, which translates to a “ sea of milk,” are just 60 kilometers away from Panaji. There is no shortage of places to visit in India , and Goa has always attracted people to it. This spectacular waterfall has served as a magnet for tourists. It is listed among India’s tallest waterfalls, with a height of 310 m (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 m (100 feet). 

The best time to see its true beauty is during the monsoon season, when you can experience the cascading effect as the water flows down through the grassy highlands, giving the illusion of a milky white sea and creating a spectacular moment worth capturing. This is how Dudhsagar got its name.

3 Things to Keep in Mind While Traveling to Dudhsagar Waterfalls

The exact meaning of Dudhsagar is a “sea of milk.” Many locals believe that this name comes from the mythic tale of a princess; the tale is about a princess who used to have a bath near the Mandovi River, and she used to drink sweetened milk from a golden jug after taking a bath. It was like any other usual day for her when she noticed a prince gazing at her, so in an attempt to cover her, her maidens poured the milk from the jug in front of her to create a virtual curtain, thus obstructing the view of the prince.  

According to this classic old tale, in honor of the princess, milky water still flows down from the green hills.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls ?

It is easy to find your way to the four-tiered attraction, regardless of your mode of travel, be it by air, rail, or bus. The falls are situated in the Western Ghats near Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa . The different routes that lead to your destination include: 

Panaji Airport is just 60 kilometers away from Dudhsagar Falls. You can either opt for a bus or a taxi from the airport to reach the magnificent falls. There are some direct flights leading to Panaji, which include Kochi, Surat, Ahmedabad, and more. Don’t worry if your city isn’t on the list; you can opt for connecting flights available from every major city.

The nearest stations leading to the falls are Collem and Castle Rock Stations. The Dudhsagar railway route is another option, though not many trains formally stop here; you’ll have to find the ones that do. 

This mode of travel is only allowed when the water level is low between January and May. 

You can hire the jeep from the local Dudhsagar Jeep Association counter at Collem. Moreover, this extremely fun adventure just costs INR 500 per head and will drop you at the base of the waterfalls.

The magnificent falls should be seen in their full glory during the monsoon season. Yes, the falls look splendid even in summer, but you should visit during the monsoon season because the cascading effect of the water falling through the green highlands can be clearly seen.

However, you need to exercise caution as the monsoon rains can increase the water level, so some of the usual things may get restricted, and always carry a life jacket during trekking.

Timings 

The falls are accessible to all from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. However, the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary’s gates open at 7AM and close around 5 P.M.

The Dudhsagar railway trek has been officially closed by the RPF as the area has witnessed many landslides, but there is no need to worry; you can trek on the alternative routes available; you can start from Collem, following the jeep trail route, and visit the bottom of the magnificent falls. Besides, the stretch from Collem spans 11 kilometers, so gear up and follow the adventurer in you.

Another route for the Dudhsagar trek is from Castle Rock station, which spans about 14 km, to the falls, which generally take about 45 minutes to reach the base of the fall. It will take 6–8 hours, so take your time and embrace nature as you go.

4 Best Places to Visit Near Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Tambadi surla mahadev temple.

The temple constructed in the 12th century is made in the Kadamaba style, lies in the helms of nature, and is just 14 km away from Dudhsagar station. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a place of Hindu worship; moreover, it is a monument of importance protected by ASI.

Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

The largest wildlife preserve in South Goa is just 7 kilometers away from Dudhsagar station. The sanctuary is home to a variety of flora and fauna.

Go For a Dip in the Pool

You cannot skip the naturally created pool near Dudhsagar Waterfalls.

Sahyadari Spice Farm

If you feel chills in your eyes on your way to Dudhsagar Falls, it is probably because of the spice farm that falls in the way of Dudhsagar Falls. Just 8–9 km away from Dudhsagar station, this plantation farm is a must-stop on your way to the falls, where you can taste authentic cuisine and a variety of spices. Apart from that, you also get to ride on an elephant as you tour the farm.
