travel escapade quotes

It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same.   For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. — Edward Abbey

travel escapade quotes

Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless.   We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd

travel escapade quotes

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins

travel escapade quotes

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington
Be careful because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart. — Joel Brinkley

Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark

travel escapade quotes

When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road. Healthy, free, the world before me. The long brown path before me leading me wherever I choose. — Walt Whitman

• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about.   For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

travel escapade quotes

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

travel escapade quotes

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

travel escapade quotes

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

travel escapade quotes

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

These top travel quotes are among the most famous short travel quotes in the world.

You’ve likely heard most or all of them before, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make for a classic Instagram caption or a dose of travel inspiration!

“The most beautiful thing in the world is, of course, the world itself.” — Wallace Stevens

I am forever obsessed with this beautiful travel quote–the longer and farther we travel, the more I appreciate just how smitten I am with this incredible world of ours.

Cup of coffee sitting on an outdoor table at a cafe in Aix-en-Provence. There's a red and white checkered chair behind the coffee.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.” — St. Augustine

While this is one of the most famous travel quotes out there, it’s as controversial as it is inspiring: not everyone has the opportunity to travel, after all, and I certainly don’t believe that you  have  to travel to be a well-rounded person.

… That being said, for those of us lucky enough to have the opportunity, I do believe travel can enrich us and our knowledge of the world immeasurably.

“This… this was excitement, romance, adventure–and there was so much more of it,  too  much more of it for even another month, another year, another  decade  to adequately contain my investigations.” — Anthony Bourdain

This quote from Anthony Bourdain’s first memoir (the fantastic Kitchen Confidential , which helped propel him to stardom), has always stuck with me: this  is exactly how I feel arriving in a new destination and becoming intoxicated by just how much I love it.

Bourdain is talking about his first trip to Tokyo here, but the sentiment could belong to any number of overwhelming, delightful, fantastic cities around the globe

For me, it brings to mind Rome , Mexico City , Istanbul , Bangkok , and so many more.

“The journey itself is my home.” — Matsuo Basho

“Our happiest moments as tourists always seem to come when we stumble upon one thing while in pursuit of something else.” — Lawrence Block

Oh, how true this is!

The reality of travel–especially long-term travel like what we have been experiencing for nearly 5 years as of the time that I’m updating this travel quotes blog post–is often stressful and physically uncomfortable, but so far, it has always been worth it.

“I have no reason to go, except that I have never been, and knowledge is better than ignorance. What better reason could there be for traveling?” — Freya Stark

While our personal travel bucket list is longer than ever, we find ourselves living by this short travel quote near-constantly on the road: when the opportunity presents itself to explore another neighborhood, city, or country that we know little to nothing about, our question is no longer “why should we visit?” but “why not?”.

“Travel opens your mind as few other things do. It is its own form of hypnotism, and I am forever under its spell.” — Libba Bray

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust

“So much of who we are is where we have been.” — William Langewiesche

I love this quote about traveling and have been tempted to use it plenty of travel captions before: each destination has a way of weaving itself into us and becoming part of who we are.

Kate Storm overlooking Ladies View in Killarney National Park, wearing a blue shirt and looking away from the camera. Views like this are perfect for visiting during your honeymoon in Ireland!

“You go away from a long time and return a different person–you never come all the way back.” — Paul Theroux

As someone who left on what was supposed to be a RTW trip with a clear end date, never came back, and half a decade later has a new career, focus in life, and wealth of experiences to show for it, I can certainly attest to this: we have never and will never come all the way back to who we started before traveling long-term.

We have been so changed by our experiences that the life we originally planned for ourselves feels inconceivable now, and we place the responsibility for most of that on leaping into the unknown.

“Loving life is easy when you are abroad. Where no one knows you and you hold your life in your hands all alone, you are more master of yourself than at any other time.” — Hannah Arendt

travel escapade quotes

“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember and I remember more than I have seen.” — Benjamin Disraeli

“I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.” — Bill Bryson

This pick from Bill Bryson might be just slightly too long for this post specifically on short travel quotes, but I love it too much to leave it off: nothing brings back childlike wonder quite like being dropped in a country dramatically different from your own!

“When you travel, you’re forced to have new thoughts. “Is this alley safe?” “Is this the right bus?” “Was this meat ever a house pet?” It doesn’t even matter what the new thoughts are, it feels so good to just have some variety. And it’s a reboot for your brain. I can feel the neurons making new connections again with new problems to solve, clawing their way back to their nimbler, younger days.” — Kristin Newman

“I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” — Mary Anne Radmacher

There’s no doubt that one of the best things about travel is getting to connect with people all over the world–here are some of the best travel quotes on the subject, starting with one of my ultimate favorites…

“Travel is about great and illogical leaps of trust.” — Dave Eggers

I pulled this from a short story called The Road to Riyadh that Eggers wrote for Lonely Planet as part of a phenomenal compilation of true travel stories , and have had it seared into my memory from the moment I read it–it perfectly captures the emotion behind stepping outside your comfort zone when traveling.

2 Weeks in Mexico Itinerary: Palenque

“If you’re 22, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel–as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them, wherever you go.” — Anthony Bourdain

“Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.” — Wendell Berry

“The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” — Shirley MacLaine

“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” — Aldous Huxley

“When overseas you learn more about your own country than you do the place you’re visiting.” — Clint Borgen

“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” — Mark Twain

“If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.” — Anthony Bourdain

“Traveling tends to magnify all human emotions.” — Peter Hoeg

Anyone who has ever fought with their travel companion over something seemingly inane while way too jetlagged knows this short travel quote to be true!

“We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls.” — Anais Nin

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” — Maya Angelou

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” — Mark Twain

As much as I love this famous travel quote by Twain, I’ve always felt that it’s best appreciated when read with the following one by Michener:

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and ignore the people, you might better just stay home.” — James A. Michener

These two short travel quotes may have two entirely different takes on how travel can (or cannot) change you, but read together, to me they always add up to the idea that you get out of travel what you put into it–and I have always found that to be true in our own adventures around the world.

“I would rather own little and see the world than own the world and see little of it.” — Alexander Sattler

Here’s to continually living adventurously and climbing all the mountains, literally and figuratively.

About Kate Storm

Image of the author, Kate Storm

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

This is the ultimate list of inspirational travel quotes. Let wordsmiths such as Stephen King, Mark Twain and the Dalai Lama transport you around the world from your armchair.

Not all inspirational travel quotes are created equal. “You have to look through the rain to see the rainbow.” Ugh! Case and point. With so many of these clichés flying around, we forget the real purpose of an inspirational quote. The best travel quotes are meant to inspire. To resonate with and encourage you to take action.

Whether you’re stuck in a rut, hungry for change and adventure, lacking motivation or self-confidence, the right inspirational quote can give you a well-needed kick up the butt to get you on the right track towards achieving your goals

My favourite kind of inspirational quotes is travel related, obviously! They remind me that following my dreams will always lead to happiness and fulfilment. So, I’ve collated a rather epic list of not just any inspirational travel quotes, but the best travel quotes. Many of these travel quotes describe wanderlust perfectly. You’re going to love them!

There’s a mix of short travel quotes, some would even make perfect travel captions for Instagram, some are funny quotes about travelling with friends, but most of all they are all awesome trip quotes.

Ok, so the length of this list is probably a little overkill, but they are all beautiful travel quotes from some really inspiring authors and legends including Stephen King, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, Samuel Johnson, John Steinbeck, Lao Tzu, Euripides, Seneca, Dalai Lama, Bill Bryson, T.S Eliot, Oscar Wilde and so so many more.

Here is the ultimate travel quotes list and the only one you’ll ever need. Save and Pin your favourites.

  • “Traveling with family is a journey that creates memories that last a lifetime.” – Robert J. Sawyers

Family vacations can be a lot of fun, but they can also be a lot of work.  There’s always the possibility of something going wrong, and that’s where the humor comes in.  That family vacation to Florida I mentioned earlier brought a bunch of catastrophes, only one of which was when my brother’s two front teeth broke off when a gust of wind caught the van’s back door and unexpectedly slammed it into his face.  Yikes!  Talk about putting a damper on a family vacation.

Of course, now we look back at this trip with a little humor around the whole situation, but at the moment, it was anything but funny.  Here are a few funny quotes about family vacations that capture the joy, the chaos, and the absurdity of these experiences:

  • “Going on a family vacation is like jumping into a pool of chaos with a side of fun.” – Jimmy Fallon
  • “A family that laughs together stays together.” – George Santayana, Spanish-American philosopher
  • “Traveling with kids is a reason to travel, never a reason to stop.” – Unknown
  • “Vacations with family are like a rollercoaster ride – they’re full of ups and downs, but they’re always an adventure.” – Tina Fey
  • “A family vacation is a test of endurance, not a test of love.” – Erma Bombeck
  • “Vacations with family are like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube while wearing oven mitts.” – Jim Gaffigan
  • “Vacations with family are like playing with fire – they’re dangerous, but they’re worth it.” – Ellen DeGeneres
  • “Traveling with kids is like taking a road trip with a clown car full of drunk monkeys.” – Unknown
  • “Family vacations are like prison.  You get to see the same people every day, and you’re all stuck in a small space together.” – Unknown
  • “The best way to keep your kids from fighting is to separate them by at least 5,000 miles.” – Unknown
  • “Vacations with kids are like a game of whack-a-mole – just when you think you have a moment of peace, something pops up.” – Michael Scott
  • “The only thing worse than being stuck on a long car ride with your kids is being stuck on a long car ride with your kids’ kids.” – Unknown
  • “Traveling with kids is like being in a circus.  There’s always someone screaming, someone throwing up, and someone trying to run away.” – Unknown
  • “Vacations with family are like a marathon – they’re challenging, but you’ll be proud of yourself for finishing.” – Trevor Noah
  • “Going on vacation with family is like trying to solve a mystery – you never know what kind of surprises you’ll uncover.” – John Oliver
  • “Family vacations are like a puzzle – all the pieces have to fit together just right, or it just won’t work.” – Louis C.K.
  • “And that’s the wonderful thing about family travel: it provides you with experiences that will remain locked forever in the scar tissue of your mind.” – Dave Barry

Family road trips are a great way to create memories unique to your family dynamic.  They are also a chance to learn fun facts about each other, like who can sing the loudest in the car, who is most likely to throw up in the backseat, and who can sleep through just about anything in the car.

On a family trip to Florida, I learned how little my three sons cared about the details of their clothing when they all came out of their shared room wearing each other’s outfits.  And let me tell ya – no one was the same size in our group, so the site of them wearing mismatched and off-sized clothing will stick with me forever!

Family road trips allow us to create memories, learn, and grow together, or at least learn how to tolerate each other for long periods.  If you are looking for inspiration for your next family road trip, I encourage you to read these quotes and consider the possibilities, like the possibility of never wanting to go on another one again.

  • “A family road trip is the ultimate adventure, but it’s also a journey of discovery, both of the world and of each other.” – Rick Steves
  • “Some roads aren’t meant to be traveled alone.” – Unknown

  • “The open road is a symbol of freedom, and a family road trip is the ultimate test of togetherness.” – Anthony Bourdain
  • “Life is too short to not go on that spontaneous road trip.” – Unknown
  • “The family road trip is an American classic, a rite of passage, a journey to who knows where and why, exactly, but it’s all good.” – Michael Paterniti

  • “No road is long with good company.” – George Eliot, English novelist
  • “A family road trip is a journey to the heart of what matters most – each other.” – Paul Theroux

Family travel memories are some of the most cherished memories we have.  They are the moments we look back on and smile, the moments that make us feel connected to our loved ones, and the moments that remind us of the simple joy of life.

I remember the old 8-track player that pumped out Roger Miller tunes on some of our road trips when I was a kid.  Roger Miller is on my playlist today just because of that memory.  Family travel memories are more than just about the destination.  They are about the journey, the people you are with, and the experiences you share.  They are the memories that make us who we are.

So next time you can travel with your family, make the most of it.  Slow down, savor the moments, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

  • “May your adventures bring you closer together, even as they take you far away from home.” – Trenton Lee Stewart
  • “Having kids is a reason to travel, never a reason to stop.” – Unknown

  • “The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories.” – Og Mandino
  • “We have such a brief opportunity to pass on to our children our love for this Earth and to tell our stories.  These are the moments when the world is made whole.  In my children’s memories, the adventures we’ve had together in nature will always exist.” – Richard Louv
  • “The memories made on a family road trip last a lifetime.  It’s about creating shared experiences and bonding over the journey.” – Samantha Brown

Making memories with your kids is one of the most important things you can do as a parent.  These memories will shape who they are as people and give them something to look back on fondly for years to come.  They will also provide you with something to look back on when your kids are all grown and have flown the nest, and you miss them with an unrelenting fierceness.

Here are a few quotes about making memories with your kids that capture the importance of these experiences:

  • “Build traditions of family vacations and trips and outings.  These memories will never be forgotten by your children.” [sic] – Ezra Taft Benson
  • “Adventures are the best gift you could ever give to kids.” – Walt Disney, American entrepreneur
  • “The best way to educate your children is to take them traveling.” – Ellen Burstyn

  • “The best education a child can get is traveling.” – Erik Erikson
  • “The only thing worse than traveling with kids is not traveling with kids.”  – Unknown
  • “The best education a child can get is travel.  It’s a passport to understanding the world and other cultures, languages, and ways of life.  It’s a journey of discovery that can last a lifetime.” – Anita Roddick

Not every family trip includes mom, dad, and 2.5 kiddos.  Family trips can include generations and extended family.  Our family trips often had an extra neighbor kid or two as my kids grew.  These trips allow you to see outside your routine and your own four walls.  They also provide the chance to learn about other people’s routines and habits.  Learning how other people function outside of your core family’s comfort is another bonus of traveling with people who don’t live under your roof.

  • “Going on a trip with family is like a symphony – each member contributes their own unique melody to create a harmonious whole.” – Lisa See
  • “Going on a trip with family is a time to forget about the everyday stresses of life and to simply enjoy each other’s company.” – Susan Wiggs
  • “Going on a trip with family is a journey filled with discovery, adventure, and a lifetime of memories.” – Neil Gaiman
  • “A family trip is a journey of discovery, a chance to experience new things and create memories that will last forever.” – David Mamet
  • “A family that travels together stays together.” – Anita Brookner, English novelist
  • “The world is a beautiful place, and there is no better time to experience it than with your family.” – Unknown
  • “A family trip is the perfect escape from the daily grind, a chance to create new memories and strengthen bonds.” – Rachel Naomi Remen
  • “Taking a trip with family is a journey of laughter, love, and memories, where each member adds their own unique contribution.” – Douglas Coupland
  • “Going on a trip with family is a journey of making memories, experiencing new things, and simply enjoying each other’s company.” – Lena Dunham

Traveling the world with your family is truly a unique and amazing experience.  World travel offers an opportunity to see new places, learn about different cultures, and bond as a family through discussion and experience.

I spent time in Japan as an exchange student when I was young.  A cultural nuance in Japan is that eating soup is done with a loud slurp.  My parents came to visit while I lived there, and I’ll never forget the look on my dad’s face when I picked up my soup bowl and gave it a big ole slurp!  I had no idea how that little detail would affect him.  At home in the good ole US, I had been taught to eat soup quietly and with a spoon.  Picking up a bowl, using chopsticks, and slurping were all new to him!

This moment is a lifelong memory for both of us, and we have had many conversations about that moment over the years!  Here are a few quotes about traveling the world with your family that capture the joy and importance of these experiences:

  • “Traveling with your family is the best way to learn about each other and the world around us.” – Unknown
  • “The world is a beautiful place, and there is no better way to experience it than by traveling with your loved ones.” – Unknown
  • “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” – Saint Augustine
  • “The world is a dangerous place, but not as dangerous as living without adventure.” – Mark Twain
  • “Travel makes one modest.  You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustave Flaubert
  • “Traveling is the art of getting lost.” – Paul Theroux
  • “Travel is a great way to meet new people and make friends from all over the world.” – Samantha Brown

Traveling with family can be a challenging experience, but it is almost always rewarding!  Traveling together gives us a chance to see new places, learn about different cultures and bond as a family.

And vacation doesn’t have to be flashy or expensive.  Whether you are looking for a short weekend getaway or a longer holiday, family travel has endless possibilities.  You can visit a new city, explore the great outdoors, or even stay in your backyard.  No matter where you go, make the most of your time together and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Here are some bonus tips for when you plan your family trip!

Plan ahead: This will help you avoid stress and make the most of your time together.

Be flexible: Things don’t always go according to plan, so be prepared to adjust your itinerary.

Make time for each other: Traveling can be hectic, so make sure to set aside some time to relax and connect as a family.

Have fun!  Family travel is about making memories, so enjoy the journey, and don’t forget to laugh.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

travel escapade quotes

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

  • ◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. ◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

High school journalists published a pro-Hitler quote heard on campus. This is what happened next

The student newspaper at C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento published a list late last month of anonymous quotes dubbed “some of the weirdest stuff” heard on campus.

The listicle included odd but innocuous lines like: “My hamster ate its babies last night,” overheard in a hallway. And, “Please, stop licking my armpits,” heard in a history class.

Then there was this: “Hitler’s got some good ideas” — a line purportedly overheard in a government class.

The decision by student editors at the newspaper, the Prospector, to publish the remark has sparked a debate about cavalier antisemitism on campus and the rights of the press — including the student press — to publish offensive speech.

For two young journalists, showdown at UCLA camp was baptism by fire

The showdown between law enforcement and protesters on the UCLA campus tested two new journalists, who had no food or helmets but plenty of adrenalin.

May 6, 2024

In an email to families Sunday night, Principal Andrea Egan called the quote “deeply offensive” and said she promptly met with the journalism students to discuss “the importance of exercising good judgment in their editorial decision-making.”

“Please know that I am navigating this to the best of my ability within student publications’ laws governing free speech,” Egan wrote. “Nothing is more important to me than the wellness of the students and staff who come to our schoolhouse daily.”

Brian Heap, a spokesman for the Sacramento City Unified School District, said in a statement that the remark, allegedly overheard in a classroom, was not reported to a teacher or administrator prior to publication.

It was published as part of a listicle titled “What Did You Say?”

The introduction to the list of nine quotes read: “Have you ever heard something while walking in the school hallways and thought, ‘That is the strangest and weirdest thing I have ever heard in my life’? Well, we asked you to share with us some of the weirdest stuff you’ve heard. Here are some of our favorites.”

In an email to The Times, Samantha Archuleta, the faculty advisor for the journalism program, emphasized that the Prospector’s staff is composed of “14-17 year olds learning to navigate journalism.”

“All choices — topics, writing, editing, publishing — are made by students, so there will be inevitable errors,” Archuleta wrote. But she stressed that their right to publish is protected by California law and the 1st Amendment.

“Yes, our ‘explainer’ was too simplistic and unsophisticated, given the sensitivity of the quote, and we’ve discussed this error as a staff and addressed how to avoid it in the future,” she wrote. “But to be clear, the offending quote was from a student on campus, not a Prospector journalist — the Prospector was merely reporting what the student said.”

In a statement on the Prospector’s website, the student journalists said their intent was for the listicle to “expose things that are said on campus that are inappropriate at different levels.”

“While some quotations may be innocuous or even funny, none of them were meant to be seen as light-hearted, celebrated, or condoned. Instead, we hope to hold up a mirror to our richly diverse community and expose the things we and others on campus overhear daily,” the statement reads.

The statement said the Hitler comment was made by a student who was speaking among friends and was not part of a classroom discussion.

“We do believe that addressing the quotes has sparked a much-needed conversation, but the situation has escalated into something we did not intend. ... It’s deeply concerning that these remarks are being said on campus without proper action from staff,” the statement reads.

The controversy at McClatchy High School comes at a volatile time, with protests over the Israel-Hamas war roiling university campuses nationwide and student journalists providing some of the most detailed, up-to-the-minute coverage of the unrest.

At UCLA last week, four student journalists who work for the Daily Bruin were attacked — sprayed with Mace and pummeled — by pro-Israeli counterdemonstrators who violently clashed with pro-Palestinian demonstrators in an encampment on campus.

The decision by the Prospector staff to publish the quote also comes amid a surge in antisemitism on school campuses — as well as a rise in vandalism at synagogues and Jewish stores, restaurants and institutions. There also has been a rise in Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment and attacks nationwide.

Jay Schenirer, president of Congregation B’Nai Israel, a synagogue in the same neighborhood as McClatchy High School, told The Times that children and teenagers in his congregation were hurting and scared because of the rhetoric at their schools and that they were taking the publication of the pro-Hitler quote seriously.

It was particularly alarming, he said, that the quote was published in a list of seemingly lighthearted quotes.

“It’s hard to imagine anyone would find this funny,” said Schenirer, a former Sacramento City Council member whose adult children attended McClatchy.

On Sunday, he said, some 70 people attended a meeting at Congregation B’Nai Israel to discuss the incident, antisemitism at local schools, and how to make sure students feel safe.

Detention of independent journalist and activists at UCLA draws outcry over press freedom

An independent journalist and prominent police critics were among dozens detained at UCLA — raising objections from legal experts and press organizations.

They composed a list of recommendations for schools, including: designating an adult to whom students can report incidents of antisemitism; “provide administrators with additional education about free speech and where is the line, when it is crossed, and how to deal with it”; and standardizing high school ethnic studies curriculum throughout the district.

Schenirer said he had spoken multiple times with Principal Egan since the student newspaper’s publication of the offensive quote.

“We need to take this seriously,” he said. “We can’t stand by on the sidelines. We need to be very proactive about this.”
