“Best” is always subjective and yes there are many other great takes on quotes that can inspire one to travel or speak to why the idea of travel is so powerful and life-changing.

Below, we’re going to be listing the best travel quotes with the associated person that wrote or said them. We’ve created pin-able images for many of the quotes for you to use and share.

For organization, wanderlust inspired quotes are broken down into high level categories. Some may belong to multiple but I tried my best to segment them into appropriate buckets.

We’ve also dropped a few nuggets of wisdom and color commentary for a few that we really love.

As we mentioned, the selection of the “best” quotes is subjective. Every quote speaks to every individual differently because of where you are in your life, the experiences you’ve had, your mind space, where you want to be, and your aspirations.

These are the best in our eyes because they aren’t deep in meaning and haven’t been overused to death.

1. “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

do not follow where the path may lead and create your own is one of the best travel quotes by ralph waldo emerson

Passed on from generation to generation is the idea that we need to fit in our own box and follow the norms set for us. It can be societal, cultural, or anything. We’ve found joy in our lives not following that conventional path.

Starting Going Awesome Places and turning it into a full time job sounded crazy (still kind of is) but we carved our own way through it. Sure there are parallel paths but I’d like to think we’ve blazed our own trail.

2. “We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.” – Katie Thurmes

we take photos as a return ticket to our memories northern lights with bubble by katie thurmes

I’ll be the first to admit that we take way too many photos when we travel but when we go back and look at the own albums (whether on our phones or photobooks we print), it really is a wonderful portal back in time to moments and time gone but not forgotten.

3. “This wasn’t a strange place; it was a new one.” – Paulo Coelho

this wasn't a strange place paulo coelho best travel quote in the magdalen islands

Now that’s the incredible thing about travel. If you open your mind and your heart, anywhere new is a wonderful adventure of discovery and not strange of weird.

Take the incredible journey I had in our 9 day Ethiopia itinerary . Sure it was uncomfortable and challenging but I embraced it all.

4. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

journey of a thousand miles travel quote by lao tzu

You can make your dreams come true with a simple step. It might be the hardest step that you’ve ever had to take because you don’t know where the journey will take you but all it takes are the first baby steps.

Sometimes it can be literal when you take that step off the plane when we went skydiving in New Zealand .

5. “I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

the moon shines on the other side of the world new zealand tongariro hike mary anne radmacher

Where we grow up in many ways define who we are and what we know. Like it or not, places like our favorite restaurants in North York , the Oxford County Cheese Trail , or local walks in the parks in Richmond Hill , are a core part of who you are.

It’s our own little bubble and when we are able to bust out of it to see what the world is like, it will challenge you to open your eyes, mind, and be a better person. In Mary’s words, you will never be the same again.

6. “Wanderlust: a strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world”

definition of wanderlust with background of oia in santorini travel quote

We cheated a little here but we sometimes throw around the word wanderlust but what does it actually mean? With this fun travel quote, now you know!

Now who has that impulse to explore the world?

7. “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide

comfort in losing sight of the shore wanderlust quote by andre gide

My mind immediately went to the new worlds we’ve seen while going to the best places to scuba diving in the world but this is one of the best quotes about travel because it encourages us to leave the comforts of home to make new discoveries.

You can take this from the perspective of us being land mammals or the fact that we naturally want to be close to the things that we feel at home with. Whether small or large, you won’t learn something new until you put yourself out there and venture to places unknown.

And no, it’s not just “man” but all the wonderful people of this earth!

8. “Jobs fill your pocket, but adventures fill your soul.” – Jamie Lyn Beatty

adventures fill your soul yosemite nationa lpark jamie lyn beatty thi quote

This is one of the best travel quotes because it is SO TRUE .

The experiences you gather while travelling are honestly worth more than all the money you can make.

9. “There’s a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they’re absolutely free. Don’t miss so many of them.” – Jo Walton

sunrise and sunsets are for free traveling quote by jo walton

As a photographer, my favourite moments are during sunrise and sunset. Every time we compile a list of the best photography spots like this one in Prague , there’s at least one sunrise or sunset included.

There’s a calmness, stillness, and serenity to the start and end of the day and yes, they’re totally free.

10. “A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you can control it. ” – John Steinbeck

best travel quote journey is like a marriage by john steinbeck

As a married couple, there’s a deep honesty to this travel quote. As a couple, travel will test your relationship to the max and we always say that even more -so than moving in is to go on a trip together to see if you have partner in life.

In John Steinbeck ‘s travel quote, he talks about how you have to let travel flow the way it wants to go. You can try to bend it, mold it, and control it but you have to let it take you

Some of the best wanderlust sayings are by accomplished writers. They’re incredibly deep, thoughtful, and literary.

11. “Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

not all who wander are lost by j.r.r. tolkien best travel quote

This is one of the most well-known wanderlust quotes that speaks to how the journey is more important than the destination. Many of us travel without that end point in mind and that’s totally okay!

12. “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” – Mark Twain

Travel is the greatest teacher of them all. It’s something that has truly opened my mind and is something that more of us need. I’d like to think that we don’t travel for travel’s sake but we do it with purpose – to open our minds, break barriers, and gain broader understanding of the world.

13. “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustave Flaubert

travel makes one modest wanderlust travel quote by Gustave Flaubert

The more you travel the more you realize that what you know and take for granted is but just a tiny bubble on this great earth. While I don’t know if I’ll ever see it all but to travel is to expand your horizons.

i haven't been everywhere but it's on my list helen sontag best travel quote with mountain sunset reflection in pool

Bucket-lists are such a topic of contention these days but I say there’s nothing wrong about dreaming and building your list of places you want to go, what you want to do, and things you want to experience. Just expect it to be a long list.

20. “People don’t take trips, trips take people.” – John Steinbeck

people don't take trips, trips take people travel quote by john steinbeck walking towards red pyramid in egypt

I’m pretty OCD when it comes to planning and I’m sure it comes through on the itineraries we publish but some of the best travel moments always come from the unexpected. In many ways, as much as I want to be in control, I feel that I am but a passenger.

21. “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller

There’s a level of fulfilment when travelling and I love that I can expand my horizons and see our world in a new and different way.

Sometimes you just need something short and sweet to convey your love of travel.

Here are our favorite short travel quotes but there are also quotes that cross with other categories so make sure to browse through the entire list as there are definitely more short quotes than just these ones below.

24. “Where to next?” – Anonymous

This is more like the question that I get asked the most beyond “where’s your favorite place you’ve been to?”. This

If you’re a traveler, this is a question that you get almost every single time. It’s also a fantastic short travel quote because it’s almost rhetorical. There’s always somewhere you’re planning on going or want to go to.

It’s also a bit of a loaded question because I’m sure your list is quite long.

25. “Travel has a way of stretching the mind.” – Ralph Crawshaw

Here, I’m in the middle of Tokyo with the original Peak Design 5L Sling that makes a great light travel set up.

  • If this is your first time on Going Awesome Places, we love finding ways to make travel cheaper. I do this by taking advantage of car rental coupon codes , hotel codes for Hilton , Marriott , IHG , Best Western , Hyatt and Radisson , and lastly, making use of eSIM such as Airalo to make sure I don’t get dinged by roaming.

If you’re in the process of planning your trip and putting together your itinerary, these are genuinely the best resources that the Going Awesome Places team stands by 100% .

Credit cards: Don’t get burned by hidden fees on top of terrible exchange rates. When we travel now, we use the Wise Card . Simply load it with the currency you need before you go and use it as a regular VISA or their digital wallet card. Use their free app to track how much you have and top up when you need to.

Flights: Of all the booking search engines, Skyscanner is the most helpful and easy to use thanks to their Everywhere feature . Kayak is also another that’s we will often check as well.

Car Rental: If you’re looking to save money, these car rental coupon codes will be a true game-changer. Otherwise, DiscoverCars and RentalCars are great places to start.

park sleep fly airport parking discount code

Airport Parking: You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

Data: We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices like PokeFi because their rates are so good and you can use it globally but recently, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. The best one is Airalo . Save money by getting region-specific eSIMs and use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase. Ubigi is another one that we’ve had success with where they uniquely offer 5G coverage. Use code AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order.

Hotels: Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts . The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. TripAdvisor is also useful for reviews and bookings.

Vacation Rentals: Your first instinct will be to check Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental.

Tours: When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

Travel Insurance: Learn how to buy the best travel insurance for you. This isn’t something you want to travel without.

  • Insured Nomads – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks.
  • RATESDOTCA – Search engine Canadians looking for the cheapest insurance including multi-trip annual policies.
  • SafetyWing – A perfect fit for long-term nomads.
  • Medjet – Global air medical transportation.
  • InsureMyTrip – Best for seniors, families, and those with pre-existing conditions.

101 of the Best Travel Quotes to Inspire Amazing Adventures

I’ve put together 101 of the best travel quotes as a reminder, motivation, and remembrance for the reasons why we travel.

I’m not just talking about the sightseeing and beach vacations. Travel is about the journey as much as the beautiful destination.

We learn about the world by experiencing new cultures and ways of living, in turn learning about ourselves.

I’ve been traveling the world for a few years – Will has been traveling for over 9 years – and the rest of the Broke Backpacker crew has put quite a dent in their passports too. I think these awesome quotes about traveling highlight some of the magnificent journeys and lessons we’ve experienced along the way.

Why? Because Travel quotes provide inspiration and capture truths about travel, adventure, and life.

Just like travel, words have the power to open our minds to completely new perspectives, which is why I hope this collection of quotes about travel and powerful words will inspire you to get out there and experience some adventurous travel yourself.

101 Best Travel Quotes

Some last words….

From funny travel quotes to inspiring words from legends past and present, here are the 101 best:

1. Travel makes you realize that no matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn.” – Nyssa P. Chopra, The Cultureur

Travel Quote 1

2. We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” – Anonymous

This is one of my favorite quotes about traveling. A lot of people think that one travels to escape life, or that long-term travelers are running away from reality. The way I see it – sure – maybe vacations are a quick escape from the real world, but traveling is a way to embrace life’s grandest adventures. Traveling is a way for life not to escape us.

3. “Travel doesn’t become adventure until you leave yourself behind.” – Marty Rubin

4. “To the tourist, travel is a means to an end; to the traveler, it’s an end in itself.” – Marty Rubin

5. “to live is to travel, on a voyage more epic than the odysseys of myth – not from place to place, but through the poignant strangeness of time.” – t.l rese.

Travel Quote 2

6. “Travel often; Getting lost will help you find yourself.” – Holstee Manifesto

Some of my best travel experiences were not necessarily butterflies and rainbows. Sometimes they were uncomfortable and painful. Sometimes I have quite literally gotten lost, but in the end, these experiences have helped me find myself.

I think that is what traveling is often about: finding – or at least rediscovering – aspects of yourself.

7. “Travel has a way of stretching the mind. The stretch comes not from travel’s immediate rewards, the inevitable myriad new sights, smells and sounds, but with experiencing firsthand how others do differently what we believed to be the right and only way.” – Ralph Crawshaw

8. “a man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” – george a. moore, 9. “sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.” –   drake.

This is one of the most important travel quotes. Doesn’t matter how long you’re traveling for, you’ll see new cultures, open your mind and change your way of thinking – even if it’s just a little bit. Traveling shows us sides of the world but also about yourself that you’ve never seen before. Having a different view on things helped a lot of people when it comes to making hard decisions.

10. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture are like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey

Travel Quote 3

11. Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comforts of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things. -air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky. -all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.” –  Cesare Pavese

I love this traveling the world quote from Cesare Pavese. Having been on the road for the last few years, he nailed my experience spot on. Nothing is certain – except air, sleep, the sea, the sky – but that is what traveling is about: embracing the unknown and trusting the process. The way I see it, the only thing for certain is what is happening in the now.

12. “Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.” – Jawaharlal Nehru

13. “culture is the arts elevated to a set of beliefs.” – thomas wolfe, 14. “traveling — it gives you home in a thousand strange places, then leaves you a stranger in your own land.” – ibn battuta.

This is one of the most beautiful travel quotes. Meeting so many new people, making new friends and even finding a second family, has to be one of the best aspects of traveling. Having traveled quite a bit, I can say that having multiple homes is definitely an amazing feeling, although it can also create some distance between you and your original home.

15. “Culture is a way of coping with the world by defining it in detail.” – Malcolm Bradbury

Travel Quote 4

16. “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”- Ibn Battuta

Probably one of the best travel quotes I’ve heard – the play on words, the sincerity, and the capture of what it means to travel. Traveling will undoubtedly leave you speechless, surprised, and lost for words, but those words will be found, and you will have epic stories to tell.

18. “To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” – Danny Kaye

19. “every journey is personal. every journey is spiritual. you can’t compare them, can’t replace, can’t repeat. you can bring back the memories but they only bring tears to your eyes.” – diana ambarsari, 20. “the perfect journey is never finished, the goal is always just across the next river, round the shoulder of the next mountain. there is always one more track to follow, one more mirage to explore.” – rosita forbes, 21. “travel can also be the spirit of adventure somewhat tamed, for those who desire to do something they are a bit afraid of.” – ella maillart.

Travel Quote 5

22. “Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.” –  Roy M. Goodman

I think this is one of my favorite quotes about travel. Having been to 30 or so countries, and plenty of destinations among them, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that happiness does   not come from beautiful destinations any more than the concept that money can buy happiness…

It’s easy to assume that if money can’t buy happiness, surely experiences can, but you can be in the most beautiful place on earth having some crazy experience, and not be happy. We tend to always be in search of the next big thing – the most beautiful beach or bigger mountain – without realizing that it is the journey there that matters, not the destination.

Happiness is hard to define of course, but I think happiness lies in your outlook and present state of mind. To be happy is to be in the present moment, no matter what you own or where you are.

travel escapade quotes

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

23. “What gives value to travel is fear. It breaks down a kind of inner structure we all have.” – Elizabeth Benedict

24. “we must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey.” – john hope franklin, 25. “though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.” – ralph waldo emerson.

Walking on the globe with your head down will never open up all views and beautiful things to see. In order to enjoy traveling, you have to keep your mind and heart open, accept different cultures and traditions and simply try to adapt. Keep a positive mindset and you’ll see the beauty of the world.

26. “Real traveling is not about visiting places but about ‘re-visiting’ our inner-self.” – Sorrab Singha

Travel Quote 6

27. “Travel not to find yourself, but to remember who you’ve been all along.” – Unknown

Both of these travel quotes (#26 and #27) encapsulate that sometimes we travel to learn more about ourselves. A large aspect of traveling is, of course, visiting places, but sometimes you end up visiting parts of yourself too.

28. “Travelling expands the mind rarely.” – Hans Christian Andersen

29. “traveling outgrows its motives. it soon proves sufficient in itself. you think you are making a trip, but soon it is making you – or unmaking you.” – nicolas bouvier, 30. it is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” – ursula k. le guin, 31. “the best journeys are the ones that answer questions that at the outset you never even thought to ask.” – rick ridgeway.

Travel Quote 9

32. “You thought too hard. Same with travel. You can’t work too much at it, or it feels like work. You have to surrender yourself to the chaos. To the accidents.” –   Gayle Forman

This is one of my favorite travel quotes! It reminds me of something I read in the book  Shantaram , about an ex-convict on the run and his adventures in India. In the book, he was given similar advice: to surrender to India and accept his experience for what it was.

You have to surrender to the chaos and enjoy/endure the experiences as they come. While this is applicable to many aspects of life, it is definitely applicable to travel. You can’t try to force itineraries and plans or work hard to fulfill some high expectations in your mind. Doing so will only tire and disappoint you.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

33. “Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.”  – Lisa St. Aubin de Teran

34. “travel has a way of making the world a much smaller place.” – janna graber, 35. “life is a journey that must be traveled no matter how bad the roads and accommodations.” –   oliver goldsmith, 36. “focus on the journey, not the destination. joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” – greg anderson.

Travel Quote 7

37. “Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection.” – Lawrence Durrell

I can relate to this quote about travel quite well actually. The longer and more that I travel, the more I find myself self-analyzing and observing my own thought and emotional processes.

Traveling has a funny way of throwing you out into the world with the intention of discovering more about everything around you, only to realize you will discover far more about yourself. It is why traveling can be the most rewarding form of introspection.

38. “You develop a sympathy for all human beings when you travel a lot.” – Shakuntala Devi

39. “once you have traveled, the voyage never ends but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. the mind can never break off from the journey.” – pat conroy, 40. “travel and change of place impart new vigour to the mind.” – seneca, 41. “a man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints.” – wilfred peterson.

Travel Quote 8

42. “It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” – Ernest Hemingway

I can relate to these words quite a bit as I try to find the balance between preparing and planning for the future, reaching goals, and just enjoying the ride and staying present in the moment.

Having goals and an endpoint in sight is good; however, I don’t think it will be as satisfying if you don’t enjoy the moments that take you there. If you only focus on the destination you’ll miss everything that matters – the journey along the way.

43. “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware.” – Martin Buber

44. “life is a magical journey, so travel endlessly to unfold its profound and heart touching beauty.” – debasish mridha, 45. “good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter.”- izaak walton.

Whether it’s long, annoying bus trips, a shabby hostel or simply somewhere you don’t necessarily feel comfortable, it’s always better to have great company by your side. Going through the rough times together makes the whole experience more endurable.

46. “The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to.” – Alain de Botton

Travel Quote 10

47. “With age, comes wisdom. With travel, comes understanding.” – Sandra Lake

I love this quote about traveling. With age, comes wisdom. Wisdom isn’t something you can read about, it is something you learn through experience. The same goes for travel. You can read and hear about places and people that are different than you, but sometimes it takes experiencing those places and meeting those people for yourself to truly understand them.

48. “Travel teaches toleration.” – Benjamin Disraeli

Travel Quote 11

52. “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain will always be remembered for his adventurous spirit and ability to share some of the most remote and fascinating corners of this planet with the rest of the world. His words ring true. Travel is not pretty, and it’s definitely not always comfortable.

Sometimes you’ll deal with awful buses and missed flights, sleep in strange places, be confronted with challenging and stressful situations, or encounter experiences that break your heart. But that’s okay because the journey will make you stronger, and ultimately make you a better person.

53. “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustav Flaubert

54. “it is always sad to leave a place to which one knows one will never return. such are the melancholies du voyage: perhaps they are one of the most rewarding things about traveling.” – gustave flaubert, 55. “all travel has its advantages. if the passenger visits better countries, he may learn to improve his own. and if fortune carries him to worse, he may learn to enjoy it.” – samuel johnson, 56. “uncertainty and anticipation are the joys of travel.” –  ken hundert.

Travel Quote 14

57. “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” –  Dalai Lama

58. “investment in travel is an investment in yourself.” – matthew karsten.

Rather than investing in the latest technology, do yourself the favor and take yourself on a little trip. Clear your mind, learn new things and experience different cultures and people. You won’t regret it!

Just because your believes, expectations and values work for you, doesn’t mean that it works for others too. Watch, experience and keep the critical thoughts to yourself if you don’t want to make enemies in a different country.

95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

While this is one of the most famous travel quotes out there, it’s as controversial as it is inspiring: not everyone has the opportunity to travel, after all, and I certainly don’t believe that you  have  to travel to be a well-rounded person.

… That being said, for those of us lucky enough to have the opportunity, I do believe travel can enrich us and our knowledge of the world immeasurably.

“Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” — Gustave Flaubert

“Tell me, what do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” — Mary Oliver

“This… this was excitement, romance, adventure–and there was so much more of it,  too  much more of it for even another month, another year, another  decade  to adequately contain my investigations.” — Anthony Bourdain

This quote from Anthony Bourdain’s first memoir (the fantastic Kitchen Confidential , which helped propel him to stardom), has always stuck with me: this  is exactly how I feel arriving in a new destination and becoming intoxicated by just how much I love it.

Bourdain is talking about his first trip to Tokyo here, but the sentiment could belong to any number of overwhelming, delightful, fantastic cities around the globe

For me, it brings to mind Rome , Mexico City , Istanbul , Bangkok , and so many more.

Koh Tao and Utila: Where to Learn to Scuba Dive

Some of the best short travel quotes in the world are not about any single destination or accomplishment in particular, but about appreciating all of the unexpected (if often uncomfortable) adventures that happen along the way.

“The journey itself is my home.” — Matsuo Basho

“Our happiest moments as tourists always seem to come when we stumble upon one thing while in pursuit of something else.” — Lawrence Block

I love this quote–and have found it to be true over and over again while traveling.

Major travel accomplishments are fantastic, but often the best and most memorable travel adventures cannot be planned.

“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” — Robert Louis Stevenson

“Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.” — Paul Theroux

Oh, how true this is!

The reality of travel–especially long-term travel like what we have been experiencing for nearly 5 years as of the time that I’m updating this travel quotes blog post–is often stressful and physically uncomfortable, but so far, it has always been worth it.

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” — Ernest Hemingway

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” — Martin Buber

“Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” — Confucius

“Adventure is worthwhile.” — Aesop

Short, sweet, and to the point: Aesop’s words are still worth living by.

La Maison Rose on Montmartre next to an empty street--definitely a pretty stop along the way during your 2 days in Paris France!

“I have no reason to go, except that I have never been, and knowledge is better than ignorance. What better reason could there be for traveling?” — Freya Stark

While our personal travel bucket list is longer than ever, we find ourselves living by this short travel quote near-constantly on the road: when the opportunity presents itself to explore another neighborhood, city, or country that we know little to nothing about, our question is no longer “why should we visit?” but “why not?”.

“Remember that happiness is a way of travel–not a destination.” — Roy M. Goodman

“The journey not the arrival matters.” — T.S. Eliot

Travel long enough, and it becomes clear that changing along the way is simply part of the deal.

Here’s how travel changes you–as told in short travel quotes from a wide variety of travelers.

“Travel opens your mind as few other things do. It is its own form of hypnotism, and I am forever under its spell.” — Libba Bray

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust

“So much of who we are is where we have been.” — William Langewiesche

I love this quote about traveling and have been tempted to use it plenty of travel captions before: each destination has a way of weaving itself into us and becoming part of who we are.

“You go away from a long time and return a different person–you never come all the way back.” — Paul Theroux

As someone who left on what was supposed to be a RTW trip with a clear end date, never came back, and half a decade later has a new career, focus in life, and wealth of experiences to show for it, I can certainly attest to this: we have never and will never come all the way back to who we started before traveling long-term.

We have been so changed by our experiences that the life we originally planned for ourselves feels inconceivable now, and we place the responsibility for most of that on leaping into the unknown.

“Loving life is easy when you are abroad. Where no one knows you and you hold your life in your hands all alone, you are more master of yourself than at any other time.” — Hannah Arendt

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life–and travel–leaves marks on you.” — Anthony Bourdain

“Your body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.” — Anthony Bourdain

travel escapade quotes

“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember and I remember more than I have seen.” — Benjamin Disraeli

“I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.” — Bill Bryson

This pick from Bill Bryson might be just slightly too long for this post specifically on short travel quotes, but I love it too much to leave it off: nothing brings back childlike wonder quite like being dropped in a country dramatically different from your own!

“A great way to learn about your country is to leave it.” — Henry Rollins

“Two roads diverged in a wood and I–I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” — Robert Frost

“The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home.” — Freya Stark

“Travel has a way of stretching the mind.” — Ralph Crawshaw

“Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” — Mary Ritter Beard

“Traveling’s not something you’re good at. It’s something you do. Like breathing.” — Gayle Foreman

“Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” — David Mitchell

“Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one’s lifetime.” — Mark Twain

“When you travel, you’re forced to have new thoughts. “Is this alley safe?” “Is this the right bus?” “Was this meat ever a house pet?” It doesn’t even matter what the new thoughts are, it feels so good to just have some variety. And it’s a reboot for your brain. I can feel the neurons making new connections again with new problems to solve, clawing their way back to their nimbler, younger days.” — Kristin Newman

“I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” — Mary Anne Radmacher

View of Orvieto Duomo as seen from Torre del Moro

There’s no doubt that one of the best things about travel is getting to connect with people all over the world–here are some of the best travel quotes on the subject, starting with one of my ultimate favorites…

“Travel is about great and illogical leaps of trust.” — Dave Eggers

I pulled this from a short story called The Road to Riyadh that Eggers wrote for Lonely Planet as part of a phenomenal compilation of true travel stories , and have had it seared into my memory from the moment I read it–it perfectly captures the emotion behind stepping outside your comfort zone when traveling.

2 Weeks in Mexico Itinerary: Palenque

“If you’re 22, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel–as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them, wherever you go.” — Anthony Bourdain

“Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.” — Wendell Berry

“The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” — Shirley MacLaine

“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” — Aldous Huxley

“When overseas you learn more about your own country than you do the place you’re visiting.” — Clint Borgen

“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” — Mark Twain

“If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.” — Anthony Bourdain

“Traveling tends to magnify all human emotions.” — Peter Hoeg

Anyone who has ever fought with their travel companion over something seemingly inane while way too jetlagged knows this short travel quote to be true!

View of castle of San Marino perched on a hill

“We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls.” — Anais Nin

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” — Maya Angelou

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” — Mark Twain

As much as I love this famous travel quote by Twain, I’ve always felt that it’s best appreciated when read with the following one by Michener:

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and ignore the people, you might better just stay home.” — James A. Michener

These two short travel quotes may have two entirely different takes on how travel can (or cannot) change you, but read together, to me they always add up to the idea that you get out of travel what you put into it–and I have always found that to be true in our own adventures around the world.

At its core, the pursuit of travel tends to be about the joy of living an adventurous life.

Here are some of the best travel quotes on pursuing a life of adventure!

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” — Helen Keller

“When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” — Susan Heller

Nearly 5 years of living a life of travel later, we can confirm this is definitely true for us! So much overpacking in those early months…

“I would rather own little and see the world than own the world and see little of it.” — Alexander Sattler

“Travel does what good novelists also do to the life of every day, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear.” — Freya Stark

“Live with no excuses and travel with no regrets.” — Oscar Wilde

“Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.” — Ray Bradbury

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.”  — Jack Kerouac

… And, of course, what better way to close out a list of the best short travel quotes than this classic by Kerouac?

Here’s to continually living adventurously and climbing all the mountains, literally and figuratively.

About Kate Storm

Image of the author, Kate Storm

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Like Jewels, Will Travel

Gem- and jewelry-themed tours and excursions mix treasure hunting with adventure and cultural experiences.

Last year, when Roberto Ruiz visited the Carbonera mine in Querétaro, Mexico, he cracked open a grapefruit-size piece of rhyolite with a hammer. When he looked inside, “it was like finding a fire fossil,” he said during a recent phone interview from his home in San Antonio. Inside was an orangey-red fire opal that he likened to a flame, forever preserved in the sphere of igneous rock.

Mr. Ruiz and his wife, Erika Rodriguez, are among the few people who have traveled to the mine, a desolate spot located in Carbonera in central Mexico, a destination that’s well off the beaten tourist track, some 20 miles from the nearest city. Their journey was especially unusual as neither is in the gem trade: Mr. Ruiz is a corporate attorney and Ms. Rodriguez works in digital marketing.

But they are among a growing number of travel enthusiasts seeking unusual, hyper-specific vacation experiences that offer an insider’s view of the gem and fine jewelry industries, and a number of businesses are responding to the demand accordingly.

Mr. Ruiz said the idea of visiting an opal mine was appealing for a few reasons, starting with his lifelong fascination with gemstones and minerals.

The mine’s remote location in the rocky, semidesert wilderness (where snakes and scorpions are not uncommon) was also compelling: Ms. Rodriguez said she and her husband are usually inclined toward travel focused on outdoor adventure, from hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru to rock climbing around Krabi in southern Thailand.

“We had also gone to the American Museum of Natural History in New York and saw an opal from Querétaro, and Roberto is originally from there,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “We found out something that we didn’t even know existed and we became interested in learning how the opals are extracted — and meeting the people who were doing it.”

But a traveler cannot just show up at a mine and start digging. It requires a guide, someone well connected to the mine owners and well versed in what to expect: dirt and dust; lots of walking; the occasional explosion at the site; and, at times, security risks. Given their knowledge of the terrain, guides keep an ear to the ground for rumblings — both geological and political — and respond accordingly to keep travelers safe.

The couple arranged the trip through Carlos Torres, an acquaintance from New York who is a gemologist, commercial gem buyer and consultant. He had piqued their interest with tales of the mines he has visited, particularly on trips with his business partner, Laurent Massi, who has taught gemology at several institutions and now is the owner of the Neogem consultancy in Paris.

Mr. Torres and Dr. Massi have organized gem mining trips not just to Mexico, but also to destinations such as Colombia (for emeralds), Thailand (for rubies) and Brazil (for Paraiba tourmaline). Last fall, they started the Gem Odyssey , a business to structure similar gem-hunting expeditions as all-inclusive travel packages that start, on average, at about $3,700 per person, not including airfare.

Gem Odyssey itineraries are tailored to jewelry enthusiasts who are not industry professionals — offering plenty of education and explanation, while avoiding “inside baseball”-type industry talk. The trips typically span nine days, with at least three of those days spent at a mine site.

The founders say the schedules can be customized to include experiences such as tequila tastings or visits to local artisan markets; any given trip might include a mix of accommodations, with upscale hotels near the airports or central cities and more rustic facilities in the mining areas.

But his clients don’t come for the niceties, Mr. Torres said. “They like the idea of getting mud on their hands.”

And, he added, after receiving instruction in mining safety, they become part of the process: “They see the drilling, how the dynamite is used for extraction, and they get to experience breaking the stones and checking for gems.”

Dr. Massi, who also was on the phone interview with Mr. Torres, said that “witnessing the birth of a gemstone is not something anyone can do and see at home in their garden. We try to give them an experience, and see a part of a country, that they could not get access to on their own.”

Digging For Tourmalines

Perhaps it is not surprising, but gem- and jewelry-themed travel is a trend especially relevant to the tastes and inclinations of high-net worth individuals — people with at least $1 million in liquid assets — according to Milton Pedraza, the founder and chief executive of the Luxury Institute, a consultancy specializing in luxury consumer research with offices in New York and Florida.

Mr. Pedraza said the sophisticated traveler has “seen it, done it.” So, he said, when someone has the opportunity to access an exclusive experience in a far-flung part of the world, “it makes your life more unique,” he said,“and everybody wants to be seen as authentic, unique and genuine.”

The designer Pamela Hastry is connected to such clients through Morphée , her jewelry company in Paris, and the lectures that she regularly hosts in and around her hometown, Brussels. She also conducts private tours of Place Vendôme in Paris, a center for high jewelry, and of the Diamantkwartier, or Diamond Quarter, in Antwerp, Belgium, one of the jewelry industry’s oldest and most prominent diamond centers.

In November Ms. Hastry is planning to take a group to Namibia, in southern Africa, to discover the country’s beautiful tourmalines (while also making a stop at a mine that produces chrysocolla, an unusual blue-green type of chalcedony). Organized with Destination, a luxury travel agency in Belgium, the 10-day itinerary includes at least one night in a tent near one of the tourmaline mines (€8,986 or about $9,711, without airfare).

“You’re going to live — and dig — like a miner for a day and a half,” Ms. Hastry said.

Damien Van Bellinghen, the founder of Le Club des Etoiles, a business and social club in Brussels, has one of the 15 reservations for the Namibia trip. Mr. Van Bellinghen, who went on one of Ms. Hastry’s private tours of Antwerp’s diamond district, wrote in an email that he looked forward to discovering how gems are extracted, getting to know the miners and exploring the country through the lens of a jeweler.

“The types of trips that Pamela Hastry organizes plunge straight into the heart of where the most marvelous jewels come from,” he wrote. “Such visits can only be made if you are accompanied by someone who has ‘insider’ knowledge and, above all, who has the trust of the local people. And we’re lucky enough to enjoy it.”

The Royal Treatment

If you do find a gem during one of these mine trips, can it be used in a piece of jewelry? Both Ms. Hastry and Mr. Torres of the Gem Odyssey said that they could facilitate a purchase, although they noted that the item purchased would have to comply with international import/export regulations.

But some gem-loving travelers don’t want to dig for their treasures. They would rather a holiday centered on history, sightseeing and shopping for finished pieces of jewelry (with posh accommodations and amenities as a bonus).

“You can tour some cities very easily through the lens of the history of fine jewelry and jewelry-making,” said Camilla Davidson, who is head of destination management for Britain, France and Ireland at Red Savannah , a luxury travel agency in England. “And that would still enable you to see so many of the destination’s highlights.”

For example, the agency offers a tour of London called Couture and Crown Jewels, an extravagant option for jewelry enthusiasts with deep pockets ($550,000 for two people, without airfare). It offers a private tour of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London and dinner in its White Tower; a four-night stay at the Raffles London at the OWO; and tickets to a West End show. And it includes a $125,000 credit toward a jewelry purchase at Humphrey Butler, an antique and estate jeweler.

Ms. Davidson said she developed the package in response to the world’s fascination with British royalty and was inspired by the idea of connecting a visit to the Crown Jewels to an exclusive jewelry shopping experience.

Humphrey Butler and his namesake business were a natural fit for the itinerary, she said: “He has the most impeccable collection and he as an individual is completely charming, exceptionally discreet, and just great fun to be around.”

Jewels at Sea

For some jewelry collectors, a travel experience that plays to, or enhances, their level of connoisseurship, is most appealing.

“Whatever their interest is, they want to learn more,” said Mr. Pedraza, the luxury consumer specialist. “So they make an adventure or journey out of it.”

One such example might be the Spotlight on Fabergé package offered by Regent Seven Seas Cruises in collaboration with Fabergé, the Russian heritage workshop known for its bejeweled eggs, which in 2009 moved its headquarters in London.

The first such excursion aboard the Seven Seas Grandeur liner is scheduled for July. Josina von dem Bussche-Kessell, Fabergé’s creative director, explained that the cruise is designed for “clients who care about art and culture and would happily sit for an hour or so to learn about the history of Fabergé’s royal clients then and now.”

The Grandeur, which was launched in November, has its own 1,600-piece art collection, including a Fabergé egg in an ocean theme with blue guilloché enamel, diamonds and pearls, called “Journey in Jewels,” which was commissioned by Regent Seven Seas. (The meetings on the commission actually led to the cruise collaboration.)

The 11-day voyage is scheduled to depart from the Civitavecchia port in Rome and to include destinations such as the Sicilian city of Taormina; Ibiza, Spain; and Nice, France, ending in Monaco (from $12,999 per person, including airfare).

The programming is to include Fabergé expert-led lectures, screenings and master classes, as well as shore excursions attuned to the participants’ interests in the decorative arts. As Ms. von dem Bussche-Kessell sees it, such a floating symposium — a kind of sleepover camp on a luxury scale — effectively creates a community for people who share a common passion.

Mr. Pedraza said that was an important incentive for certain travelers: “They love to engage with the product while meeting people who are their peers and who come through trusted brands and curators.”

And the return home is just as important as the journey itself, especially with a glittering souvenir to show friends and family.

“You get to demonstrate your expertise,” Mr. Pedraza said, “The experience has made you an insider.”

Alexandra Fuller’s new book is not your typical grief memoir

‘fi,’ written in the aftermath of her son’s sudden death at 21, is terrifying, profound and defiantly enthralling.

In one of the best-loved memoirs of the early aughts, “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight,” Alexandra Fuller wrote of her childhood in Africa during the tumultuous 1970s and ’80s. The author, who was born in England, spent much of her youth in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and her childhood was marked by adventure and tragedy, including three dead siblings.

Who could have imagined that in the two decades since, life would give her material for three more grief memoirs, written in the spaces between a novel and several other nonfiction books. In “Leaving Before the Rains Come” (2016), she documented the painful end of her long marriage ; in “Travel Light, Move Fast” (2019), the passing of her beloved, complicated father. Then, in that book’s epilogue, she revealed that as bad as things may have seemed, they were now much worse: Her sister and mother had stopped speaking to her, the romance that saved the day post-divorce was over, and, dwarfing every other possible misery, her 21-year-old son had died.

She returns to these difficult topics in “ Fi: A Memoir of My Son ,” a book that is as hard to pick up as it is to put down — a gutting, terrifying, profound and defiantly enthralling read. Toward the end of the memoir, Fuller quotes Franz Kafka: “A book must be an axe to the frozen sea inside us.” This book is a sharp ax. By its end, I was moved and devastated yet somehow strengthened.

Fi was the nickname her son, Charles Fuller Ross, chose for himself. He was as lively and dear and beloved in their small “Wydaho” community as a boy can be. His death in 2018 was almost completely out of left field. “Three days ago, I’d walked with him along the Snake River — distracted,” Fuller writes. “He’d been home only a few days from Argentina, where he’d had the first inexplicable seizure at the end of his semester abroad — stress of finals, late nights studying, packing up to come home.” Then he had another seizure, and a week later, he died. That is all Fuller knows about it — she did not care to read the autopsy report or join the meeting his father had with the doctors and the medical examiner.

“It’s not only that I didn’t want to know the details of what the experts could only speculate had been the cause of Fi’s seizures and therefore the cause of his death; it’s mostly that I didn’t have time for guesses. I wanted to know for certain: where, now, is my only begotten, beloved son?”

Where he is, now, is in this book she has written — and also, incidentally, in a lovely series of articles in the online journal Medium by his sister Sarah Ross. The biggest challenge and also the saving grace of the period after Fi’s death was the fact that Fuller has two other children, who still very much needed a functioning mother. Sarah, then 24, and Cecily, then 13, were extraordinarily close to their brother, which had been partly their mother’s doing and also her joy. “Because of the rupture from my siblings, the lifetime of pain it’d been, I’d soldered my children to one another.”

Fuller came to this responsibility prepared, having been mothered herself by a woman scalded by the loss of two infants and a toddler who drowned. “Everyone has always said that my mother’s bouts of blackout drinking, her suicide attempts, her periods of insanity make sense. People have always told me that I should understand this; when a mother loses a child, her surviving children lose a mother. But I didn’t lose my mother; she hung on, mothering away, dragging and coaxing and encouraging us when she could, how she could; ignoring us and poisoning herself when she couldn’t. I didn’t lose a mother when she lost my siblings; that was my mother, marinated in grief but also tough, glamorous, heartbroken, capable, creative, resilient, determined to have a ball anyway.”

For reasons that are not discussed in the book but may have something to do with Fuller’s memoirs, her mother is completely absent from her life now. To have to go through this tragedy without the support of close family adds bitterness to the flavor profile of Fuller’s pain, and it’s particularly confounding to read that her ex-husband, Charlie, flew over to spend time with her mother and sister in Africa. Fortunately, Fuller does have one ferociously committed ally, a woman named Till, a younger ex-lover who — though Fuller rejects her, refuses to sleep with her or even talk to her (she communicates with flash cards), and generally treats her like an incompetent servant — refuses to let her be totally alone. Till moves with her to the middle of nowhere, staying down the road because she’s not allowed in the “sheepwagon” Fuller inhabits herself. Till drives Fuller to a grueling-sounding silent retreat in a former mental institution in Canada. She feeds her, waters her, stands between her and self-harm. She is certainly the hero of this book.

There are plenty of non-heroes, as well. As usual, in times of tragedy, people say the darndest things, and Fuller has not forgotten them: “‘You will never get over it,’ a woman of my acquaintance assured me quite casually, as if pointing out to someone pinned under a bulldozer: Oh, that won’t budge in this lifetime .” Fuller’s reply, “thank you,” hid her real thoughts: “I’m not ready to eschew my pain, wrap myself in prayer flags, and fade out with the bells. I am merely in the early learning stages of grieving my only possible son.”

As Fuller reminds us, she is far from alone, but “one of millions of mothers to have lost a child every year.” Then she asks: “If none of us suffered, where would we be? Without wise women is where; suffering brings wisdom. So, a gift, this suffering, a promissory note for sagacity.” With “Fi,” I would call the note paid in full, though — Fuller being Fuller — I won’t be surprised if there are future installments.

Marion Winik, host of the NPR podcast “The Weekly Reader,” is the author of numerous books, including “First Comes Love” and “The Big Book of the Dead.”

'Fallout' is a masterful adaptation that captures the games' adventure and mystery

  • Amazon's TV series "Fallout" is based on the hugely popular games by Interplay and Bethesda SoftWorks.
  • The show follows a young woman looking for her missing father in a postapocalyptic world.
  • "Fallout" embraces the exploratory spirit of the games but tells an original story.

Insider Today

Video games are notoriously difficult to adapt for film and TV successfully.

HBO's " The Last of Us " was a hit, flooring fans and critics alike with its strong performances and dedication to the source material.

But many less-than-stellar adaptations ("Prince of Persia, "Hitman," "Warcraft," "Monster Hunter") failed to win audiences over.

Players have flocked to the " Fallout " games since 1997 to fight off raiders and slay monsters in a retrofuturistic wasteland ravaged by nuclear war.

With so much material at hand — four main games and several spinoffs — attempting a live-action adaptation that captures the hallmark intriguing character arcs, fast-paced combat, and open-world exploration is an unenviable task.

The makers of Prime Video's "Fallout" were wise, then, to develop a TV show with an original storyline that does indeed capture the games' sense of adventure and mystery.

The show focuses on Lucy MacLean ( Ella Purnell ), a young woman who has lived her entire life in the underground bunker Vault 33, one of many shelters across America where thousands of people sought protection from a nuclear war between the US and China.

When Lucy's father, Hank MacLean ( Kyle MacLachlan ), is kidnapped by invaders from the outside world, she decides to leave the safety of the vault to find him.

At first blush, it's similar to "The Last of Us," which faithfully followed the events of its games, also focusing on a postapocalyptic journey and a father-daughter-esque relationship.

But with "Fallout," executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy take the opposite tack.

Related stories

Aside from the vaults, the weapons, and other recognizable "Fallout" imagery, this is a completely original story that manages to blend seamlessly with the world of the games. It's a smart choice, as the beauty of the games lies in exploring the truly bizarre world in which the story unfolds.

Lucy MacLean's story embraces the spirit of the games

While the drive to find Hank is the catalyst for Lucy braving the postapocalyptic wasteland, her story is really about learning who she is away from her isolated upbringing in Vault 33.

That means the audience learns everything it needs to know through Lucy's point of view, cleverly making the story accessible to newcomers, while seasoned fans can still enjoy the glut of Easter eggs and references.

Players will recognize the way Lucy has to figure out how to navigate the dangers of the wasteland, which echoes the start of the game. (Top tip: Don't drink the irradiated water.)

After leaving her comfy underground home, the naive vault dweller quickly gets tangled up with an enigmatic bounty hunter called The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), as well as a militaristic group called the Brotherhood of Steel.

Anyone who's ever played a "Fallout" game knows how easy it is to get sidetracked by different factions, gangs, and cults after starting even the simplest mission.

Thankfully, Lucy never gets too distracted, and her journey widens her perspective of what's happened since the bombs fell 200 years ago. This forces her to reckon with the fact that she will never return to her squeaky-clean, comfortable life in the vault, meaning viewers actually care about her as a character when the bloody action scenes inevitably come along.

A pitch-perfect script drives the narrative forward, making clever use of the franchise's satirical take on consumerism, the Red Scare , and Hollywood.

Game players will also be pleased that the games' warped sense of humor isn't lost in translation to screen: whether that's a member of the Brotherhood running away from a mutated bear repeatedly screaming "Fuck!" as any player would, or a gleefully murderous robot voiced by Matt Berry trying to steal Lucy's internal organs.

Sure, the world has gone to hell, but at least it's funny.

By leaning into the world of "Fallout" rather than adapting a specific game or storyline, Prime Video found a way to bring this wacky, wonderful wasteland to life in all of its unhinged glory. It's an utter treat.

"Fallout" streams on Prime Video on April 10.
