Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship: Oasis of the Seas

oasis of the seas cruise liner

jimfeng / Getty Images

The Oasis of the Seas is one of a class of  Royal Caribbean International  cruise ships which are the world's largest passenger ships. Oasis is huge, absolutely beautiful, and the innovative neighborhood concept provides a marvelous atmosphere for cruisers. Oasis of the Seas was the first ship to tout the neighborhood concept of seven distinct themed areas, including Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place, and the Youth Zone.

Some travelers might have some trepidation about this large ship, but once cruisers walk around the ship, and get their first looks at the areas like the Boardwalk, Central Park, and the Pool and Sports Zone, they will understand how the neighborhood concept makes things feel smaller and more friendly. However, with so much onboard variety, travelers will need a week's cruise (or more) to thoroughly experience all the Oasis of the Seas offers.

Ship Facts and Stats

Baldwin040 / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY 2.0

The 225,000-GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) Oasis of the Seas is one of the world's largest cruise ships, carrying 5,400 guests in double occupancy, and 6,296 when full.

The ship has a 2,165 crew from over 70 countries onboard. Oasis of the Seas has a 30-foot draft, towers 213 feet above the water, and is 1,184 feet long and 208 feet wide. Such a huge ship is bound to have equally impressive amenities and activities including the first living park at sea, the first-ever elevating bar at sea, and a rock-climbing wall towering 40 feet above the deck.

Central Park

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

The Oasis of the Seas Central Park is an open-air park, the first living park at sea, found mid-ship on deck 8. With no sea view and surrounded on all sides by the ship, you could easily be in any city park. This living park has 12,175 plants, 62 vine plants, 56 trees and some bamboo over 24 feet high. The greenery and shade make it a pleasant place to sit outside and have a drink or dine alfresco. Central Park is mostly geared towards adults. It has six restaurants and bars, including the ship's most upscale restaurant, 150 Central Park, and Royal Caribbean passenger favorite Chops Grille. Other restaurants at the Oasis Central Park include the casual Italian trattoria, Giovanni's Table and the indoor/outdoor gourmet market, Park Cafe.

The Oasis of the Seas Boardwalk feels like a traditional seaside pier and is a fun family neighborhood. Found on deck 6, the Boardwalk is flanked on one end by Dazzles Bar and on the other by the AquaTheater , rock climbing walls, and the sea. Cabins line both sides of the Boardwalk, and those near the stern can see both the sea and the fun on the Boardwalk and in the AquaTheater.

The zip line is 82 feet long and is nine decks above the Boardwalk.

Other than the AquaTheater, the most striking feature of the Boardwalk is the large, handmade carousel. The music and menagerie of animals circling the carousel certainly give the Boardwalk an authentic feel. The eateries reflect the casual seaside atmosphere: Johnny Rockets, the Seafood Shack, donut shop, Boardwalk Bar, and ice cream parlor.

Royal Promenade

Werner Bayer / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

The Oasis of the Seas Royal Promenade is an expanded and enhanced version of the Royal Promenade on Royal Caribbean's Voyager and Freedom-class ships. It's the first area passengers see when boarding the ship since it serves as the entry point for embarkation. Located on deck 5 underneath Central Park, the Royal Promenade is three decks high and features large skylights that allow light into the area. Much like a mall, the Royal Promenade is lined with eight retail shops and nine restaurants and bars . The most innovative bar is appropriately called The Rising Tide Bar. The first-ever moving bar at sea, it carries 32 people and works as an "elevator bar," moving slowly up and down as it links Central Park and the Royal Promenade.

Pool and Sports Zone

The Pool and Sports Zone stretches the length of the Oasis of the Seas on decks 15 and 16. It's a terrific outdoor playground. The jogging track measures 2.4 laps to the mile.

Four distinctly different pools and several whirlpools provide plenty of space for water fun. The Beach Pool has a sloped entry allowing guests to wade into the pool. The Main Pool is surrounded by sun lounges and is flanked by two whirlpools. The H2O Zone is a signature Royal Caribbean family water park, and the Sports Pool is restricted to lap swimmers in the morning and team water sports in the afternoon.

The signature Rock Climbing Wall lets you climb 40 feet above the deck. The Pool and Sports Zone has10 restaurants and bars.

A favorite of adult guests is the adults-only, two-deck Solarium, a gorgeous, peaceful area in the forward part of the ship.

Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

The Vitality Spa and Fitness Center is found forward on deck 6. The spa features a Thermal Suite with heated tile lounges and steam rooms and 29 treatment rooms. It also includes calming relaxation rooms. Teens and kids even have a spa area of their own. The Fitness Center has 158 fitness machines, including cardio and resistance equipment. Guests can work out alone or join in on one of several classes such as spinning, kickboxing, Pilates, or yoga. The Vitality Cafe offers healthy snacks, sandwiches, wraps, fruit, and smoothies.

Entertainment Place

Entertainment Place is the hub for Oasis of the Seas nightlife. Occupying all of deck 4, it is easily accessed from the Royal Promenade. Entertainment Place includes the Casino Royale, the Opal Theater, Studio B, Comedy Place, Jazz on 4, and the Blaze Nightclub. The Opal Theater features Broadway plays, specialty acts, and entertainment headliners. You can see a show like CATS , an ice skating extravaganza or high flying acrobatic feats. Cruisers can book free tickets for all the shows in advance of their cruise.

The Youth Zone covers over 28,000 square feet on the Oasis of the Seas. The Adventure Ocean area for kids ages 6 months to 12 years old is found on deck 14, and the Youth Zone Teen area is on deck 15. Adventure Ocean features four different age group areas: Royal Babies and Tots (6 months to 3 years), Aquanauts (3 to 5 years), Explorers (6 to 8 years), and Voyagers (9 to 11 years). Each distinct area has counselors and age-appropriate activities. In addition to the Adventure Ocean age-group areas, space includes a Workshop for family activities, Imagination Studio, the Adventure Ocean Theater, Play Area, and a Science Lab. Teens will love the themed dance parties and special activities like pool parties and casino nights.

Cabins and Suites

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Oasis of the Seas features a whopping 2,706 cabins and suites. Almost 2,000 have balconies that overlook the ocean to catch the breeze, Central Park, or the Boardwalk. Oasis has 37 different categories of cabins and suites, so there is certainly an accommodation to suit everyone's tastes and pocketbooks.

The 28 loft suites high on deck 17 are a first for the cruise industry, with two levels and floor-to-ceiling windows. Like all the Oasis staterooms, these suites are contemporary and chic. Popular are the AquaTheater Suites, with huge balconies that overlook the Boardwalk, AquaTheater, and the sea. Families can bunk together in the numerous types of family cabins and suites, which sleep up to six.

Dining Options

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Oasis of the Seas passengers will not be disappointed by the 24 distinct dining options scattered around the ship, many of which are included in the cruise fare while others have a surcharge. Many cuisines are covered, so passengers can eat All-American favorites one day and then enjoy Italian, Asian, or seafood the next. In addition to the various cuisines, the ambiance ranges from casual to chic and elegant.

Guests can grab a quick bite at the Windjammers buffet, enjoy a traditional restaurant at the Opus Dining Room, or have a special meal at 150 Central Park, Chops Grille, or the Chef's Table. Much like the shows, cruisers can book a table in any of the specialty restaurants prior to their cruise.

Most cabins are sized 150-180 ft2 / 14-17 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 55 ft2 / 5 m2. The largest is the Royal Loft Suite (1530 ft2 / 142 m2 plus 850 ft2 / 79 m2 terrace with Jacuzzi). The total number of cabin categories is 43, including the "Guaranteed" categories (W-Suite, X-Balcony, Y-Oceanview, Z-Inside).

The cruise ship has a total of 46 handicap staterooms (ADA-certified, wheelchair-accessible cabins) in the types/categories Crown Loft Suite (1), Junior Suite (2), Family Balcony (1), Balcony (24), Boardwalk-Park Balcony (8), OceanView (2), Inside (8).

  • Disabled cabins offer the following special amenities: open bed frames, wider cabin and bathroom doors, wider turning spaces, lowered vanity (sitting area), closet rods, bathroom (roll-in shower, fold-down shower bench, grab bars, hand-held showerhead, lowered sin, raised toilet).
  • Passengers booked in handicap-category staterooms are required to complete the "Guest Special Needs Form".

  • All public restrooms on the ship have stalls and automatic door systems. All decks provide elevator access. All onboard dining venues, bars, and lounges offer wheelchair access and seating.

Smoking in the Suites/cabins or on their balconies is forbidden.

Follows the review of RCI Oasis of the Seas staterooms as amenities, furniture and services. You can see furniture details on the cabin plans shown above.

All Suites have King-size beds, large-size bathrooms (whirlpool bathtub, separate shower), vanity area, walk-in closets, large living rooms (Queen-size double sofabed, dining area/pantry, wet bar, dry-bar, kitchen, dining table), step-out balcony (sliding floor-ceiling doors, whirlpool bathtub, sun loungers, deckchairs). Guests in all Suites (excluding only Junior Suites) enjoy the following bonus amenities: Concierge Service (24-hour Concierge Lounge access /continental breakfast, hors d'oeuvres, CD/DVD library, private parties arrangements, priority services (Salon/Spa reservations, booking RCI cruise tours/excursions, dining reservations).

All Royal Caribbean Loft Suites are Duplex Apartments (accommodations on 2 levels/decks). They feature separate bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (1 with bathtub, 1 shower-only), large-sized outdoor terraces (with premium garden furniture, 4-seat dining tables, some have outdoor Jacuzzi tubs). Loft Suite's lower level houses the living room and dining room (dry bar, bath with shower), while the upper level houses the bedroom and the full-bath (with bathtub). Some Loft Suites are accessible (with an elevator), and some are connecting.

Royal Loft Suites have 2 bedrooms (2 twin beds /to double, 2 Pullman /bunk beds, 2 vanity/chair), 2 bathrooms (master bathroom has bathtub), dry bar (mini-fridge), living area (double sofa bed), dining room (table, chairs), media center (surround sound, large flat TV, stereo, CD/DVD player). These suite accommodations are rated among the top-10 best suites at sea. Each of them features a 1600 ft2 (~150 m2) indoor space plus the 874 ft2 (roughly 80 m2) terrace balcony (wrapping around the suite) with its own outdoor whirlpool bath and dining area. Among the suites' prominent features are also the 2-story high floor-ceiling windows (glass walls), an upstairs located bedroom (glass wall partition, with blackout curtains), adjoining bathroom (separate bathtub and shower, double-sink vanity with a bidet). On the main level, there's a second bathroom with shower. Main level's living room has convertible to double bed sofa. The suite's master bathroom (on level 2) is roughly the size of a standard Royal Caribbean cabin. Rated among the top suite bathrooms at sea, the Royal Loft Suite's bath (included in the suite combo image below) features an open-space design, a huge-size whirlpool tub, floor-ceiling windows with ocean view, 2 rain-head faucets, 2 sinks, a bidet, ample cabinet space for storing toiletries and towels. On Royal Caribbean Caribbean cruises, Royal Loft Suite fares start at USD 1200 per person - per night!

Crown Loft, Star Loft, and Owners Suites have a living room (double sofabed), dining room (dry bar, 4-seat table), bathroom (with bathtub), bedroom (with twins /convertible to double bed), balcony (outdoor dining area with a 4-seat table and wet/dry bars).

Also unique for RCI Oasis-class cruise liners are the aft-facing Aqua Theater Suites with huge wraparound balconies overlooking the ship's Aqua Theater (show lounge with large plunge pool and live entertainment). They are in two types (1-Bedroom and 2-Bedroom) and have living room (double sofabed), media center, dining area, separate bedroom (twins convertible to double bed). The larger Aqua Theater Suites are with 2 separate bedrooms (1 with double bed, 1 with bunk beds), 2 bathrooms (1 with bathtub, 1 shower-only), dining room (dry bar, 4-seat table).

Grand Suites (Family Suites) are also in two types (1-Bedroom and 2-Bedroom), the larger having 2 separate bedrooms (1 with double bed/convertible to twins, 1 with 2 bunk beds), living room (vanity, double sofabed, 2 separate bathrooms (1 with shower, 1 with bathtub), balcony (4-seat dining table).

All balcony staterooms have floor-ceiling sliding doors opening to a private step-out verandah. The ship's mid-aft part is humped (wider). Cabins on the aft hump's outer part are premium location staterooms. Aft on each side there are groups of hump balcony rooms considered a premium location. Since decks there are wider, these cabins have larger verandas and feature great views (side to side and also when looking down). Depending on weather/wind, aft-facing cabins may experience soot issues. Most of the aft balconies offer views of the Aquatheater.

Family Balcony cabins have 2 twin beds (to Royal King-size), bathroom (shower), living area (double sofabed), separate bathroom (with 2 bunk beds).

Boardwalk-Central Park Balcony cabins are all with step-out verandahs, while Boardwalk-Central Park View cabins have a Picture Window. These (also unique for Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships) cruise accommodations are located above the "Boardwalk Neighborhood" and the "Central Park Neighborhood" (overlooking the ship's interior) so noise could be an issue. Be advised that all Central Park and Boardwalk balcony cabins have "interior balconies". These are not private as they can be viewed from verandas located on the opposite side.

Category 1K-Ultra-Spacious Oceanview (Family Oceanview) are cabins perfect for families with more kids. This is a family-type stateroom (bow-facing) with master bedroom (2 single twin beds convertible to a double bed), second bedroom (2 Pullman beds/upper and lower bunks), a double sofabed (in the living room), 1 bathroom (WC-shower), 2 large round-shaped windows (non-opening).

Family Interior cabins have each 2 lower single beds (convertible to Royal King-size), separate bedroom (with 2 Pullman beds/lower-upper bunk beds), 1 double sofabed.

Most Oceanviews are with a large Picture Window (size is 24 inches / 61 cm) and expanded lounge areas (with double sofabed). The exception is all forward-facing oceanviews (on decks 7 through 11), which are with slanted windows overlooking the ship's bow. The "family oceanview" cabin categories 1K (Ultra Spacious), 1R (Family Interior) and 1V (Family Balcony) are with convertible to double twin beds, 2 Pullman beds, 1 double sofabed, larger closet space, expanded the living area.

Category "Promenade View Interior" are also unique cabins available on the largest RCI cruise ships. These are inside cabins with bowed windows (bay window) overlooking the Atrium's Royal Promenade. The bow window gives more interior space and is also a great vantage point to watch the Royal Promenade's "street" activities - including the parade each evening. Remember to keep the curtains closed at night as there are Promenade cabins across the street too.

(to be added on Oasis OTS in the future) Another unique Royal Caribbean cabin type is the "Interior Virtual Balcony". The stateroom features a floor-ceiling LED screen (size 80-inch / 2 m). This is a 4K ultra-HD screen (no TV functions) that receives real-time/live video streaming from the cruise ship's outside cameras. This means you will enjoy "balcony views" without paying for the higher-priced cabins with step-out balconies.

All Oasis OTS cabins as standard/complimentary amenities offer 2 twin beds (convertible to Royal King), ample closet/drawer space, en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, shower, single-sink vanity, hairdryer, bath products), sitting area (desk, drawers, vanity, couch/convertible sofabed), smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies), individual air-conditioning, direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), radio, minibar, Internet access, 24-hour room service (5-12 am /complimentary), European and US/UK electrical outlets, USB charging points, Internet access, individual air-conditioning. Twin beds size is 36 x 82 inch (90 x 210 cm).

In-cabin babysitting is available at an hourly fee (US$19 per kid) for 4 kids per stateroom max. For in-cabin use can be borrowed movies, toys and games suitable for kids with autism.

In-cabin coffee maker rentals are offered on the cruise ship, allowing passengers to rent an Illy Espresso machine for in-room use. The Illy coffee maker's rental pricing depends on the number of capsules - 14 capsules: (machine rental price USD 39), 21 (USD 56), 28 (USD 69) and 35 (USD 79).

Wi-Fi costs US$15 per device per day (50% discount on a second device). The Wi-Fi is always on (shipwide coverage) and super fast (even for streaming movies).

Among the new technologies implemented on all Royal Caribbean ships are the RFID wristbands (aka WOWbands). These are optional choices for replacing the RCI's traditional SeaPass cards. They allow passengers to do onboard purchases (shopping, paying for drinks and food, casino playing) and also to access their cabins. WOWBands are silicone-made, offered in different colors (black, blue, white, yellow) and can be used on other Royal Caribbean ships (need re-programming). They were first introduced on Quantum OTS as a complimentary amenity for all guests. Subsequently, RCI started charging for the WOWBands US$5 (available for purchase at the Guest Services desk). Junior Suite and above passengers receive their wristbands for free (placed in envelopes in the cabins).

Note: Through RCI's promotion "EAT-DRINK-PLAY" (offered in 2017-2019), passengers booked in Boardwalk/Central Park balcony cabins received new perks including complimentary food, beverages and exclusive activities. Boardwalk Balcony rooms (categories B1-B2) got for free one dinner for 4 (at Johnny Rockets/deck 6), the Royal Refreshment (drink package for 2) and a private Rock-Climbing-Wall family experience (on deck 7). Central Park Balcony rooms (categories C1-C2) got for free one lunch for 2 (at Giovanni's Table/deck 8), plus 1 bottle of red wine (in cabin) and private gambling lessons from an expert (at the Casino Lounge/deck 4).

Cruise review: Oasis of the seas

The Oasis of the seas – first sighting!

I woke up Sunday for my early morning coffee and found the the Oasis of the Seas looking at me through the trees which was a truly wonderful feeling.  I remember once in New York, we could see only a small slice of the Hudson River between buildings from our hotel but still happened to be paying attention as the Norwegian Jewel passed by on its way to the pier where we would board later that day.  First glimpse of the ship you’ve been studying for months makes it all real.

oasis of the seas hotel port canaveral royal caribbean pool shuttle

Onboard by 11!

Breakfast is included at the hotel and wasn’t too crowded as early as we ate, however considering practically the entire hotel is there to cruise, it probably does get a bit crazy a bit later in the morning.  Three shuttle times were available 9:45, 10:30 and 11:30. We chose 9:45 as we always try to board as early as possible. The shuttle driver was prompt and very nice.  The drive is incredibly short and you are literally dropped off at the door.

Porters take your checked bags as you exit the shuttle.  Then, in our case, we were through security, checked in and waiting with a boarding number of 1 in probably 10 minutes.  Absolutely amazing efficiency.  Keep in mind our boarding number was only number one in terms of those of us left after those with disabilities, Crown and Anchor priority, and of course the serious casino players. We’re Platinum on both Carnival and Norwegian but only Gold with Royal as this is only our third time sailing with them.

Believe it or not, boarding began by 10:45 and we were on board before 11am.  That is unheard of for us, as we tend to favor New York and Baltimore as our departure ports and consider it a victory of we board prior to noon. It’s likely more due to sailing from a fantastic and newer terminal in Florida than anything Royal Caribbean does differently, but suffice it to say that the combination of both will not disappoint when it comes to boarding.

oasis of the seas cruise ship royal caribbean

Internet package

Once on board I stopped to chat with the internet staff.  Having purchased the soda package/WiFi combo a few months ago, I wasn’t sure if that include the streaming internet or just regular.  My intention was to upgrade if necessary, but it turned out surf and steam is included when you buy the combo in advance. So that was good.  Typically the difference in the two speeds is $5/day.

Speedy luggage

The rooms were ready at 1pm which is typical although what wasn’t was the fact that our luggage beat us to the room!  In 30 some cruises, that has never happened.  Typically it’s at least an hour or two after getting in the room that they are delivered and we are unpacking when its time for the muster drill and sailaway.  This cruise, however, we were on board, had lunch, explored and unpacked by shortly after 2pm!  That was a record that I can’t imagine ever being broken.

oasis of the seas and independence of the seas royal caribbean ships side by side

Room/Cabin location

Not sure of the category system with Royal Caribbean right off hand, but I believe it was considered a Super Oceanview with Balcony.  Something like that anyway.   The room was nice enough, but certainly nothing special.  Decent storage, shelves, etc. Outlets were fine, and I believe there were three on the desk which is more than usual. I had heard Royal likes to confiscate power strips, though mine still got through.  It might be such that surge protectors aren’t allowed on board, but regular ones are fine.

The balcony was very nice size but the view was limited slightly by some supports for Deck 15. I would have almost considered it an obstructed view, but it might not be worth that description. Probably only a dozen cabins with these supports exist on Deck 14 under the bulge area below the Windjammer.  I thought, on booking, that it had been a great location to still be available, perhaps thats why. We always try to stay one deck down from the pool deck for easy access during the days. On this ship that separates you greatly from Decks 4/5/6 and the Promenade, Dining Rooms and Boardwalk.  Thankfully we only had to walk up to 14 from 5 a couple times, which isn’t as bad as it might sound.

Twenty four elevators is more than adequate most times.  But peak hours and especially the dreaded post muster drill rush really put a strain on them.  Another good reason to choose Deck 14 aft is quick access to the Wipeout Cafe and the arcade’s coke machine.

oasis of the seas independence of the seas side by side cruise ships royal caribbean

Getting around

For the size and complexity of the ship, it’s really not difficult to learn your way around.  It’s still a ship after all.  Forward/aft, starboard/port, and decks. We had a handle on it fairly quickly.  In a nutshell: Central Park extends between the forward and aft elevators on 8, Promenade extends between the elevators on 5, Boardwalk is aft from the aft elevators on 6, night clubs, ice skating and casino are on 3. Main Dining Rooms are aft on 3,4 and 5, pools, sports and Solarium are on 15 and Windjammer is 16.  Most of the rest is cabins, so once you find yours and your relationship to the stairs/elevators you’re good to go.

oasis of the seas cruise ship royal caribbean sign logo

Central Park/Park Cafe

Our first meal on boarding day was at Park Cafe. Having read review after review endorsing the roast beef sandwiches there, we had to try for ourselves. They did not disappoint! They are small, but not as much as anticipated, so getting two each right off the bat might have been a little overkill. They come with either regular or spicy mustard or horseradish.  Absolutely worth visiting and good for boarding day lunch as it’s not super crowded.

They have a good selection of other sandwiches as well as pre-made and made to order salads. Bags of chips are available, which we thought unusual for a ship. If you can grab a table outside, the atmosphere is wonderful.  Inside it’s rather diner like. Central Park itself is beautiful and unlike anything else you are likely to see at sea. Unfortunately we rarely had occasion to visit unless going to Park Cafe. It’s worth seeing at night too, even if you have to go out of your way do pass through.

oasis of the seas royal caribbean central park

If you’re inclined to pay extra for food you’ll probably visit more often as many of the specialty dining venues are located in Central Park.  That’s not something that appeals to us though.

oasis of the seas central park royal caribbean

The pool deck is a little confusing at first since there are 4 pools.  The beach and main pools are probably the most utilized.  There is also an awesome kids area and a sports pool where they have games, exercise and such. We spent the bulk of our time in the vicinity of the beach pool. I loved the abundance of nice shaded areas on Oasis.

My son and I are not sun worshipers by any means and do our best to stay out of it unless actually in the pool.  Prime areas on other ships are in the direct sun and space in the shade is mostly tables, smokers or afterthoughts.  One thing that took a little getting used to was the presence of lifeguards. All the time! If the pool is open, there is a guy standing there watching. You get used to it but it’s weird at first.  Even the less than 4ft deep adults only Solarium pool has one.

oasis of the seas swimming pool top deck

A nice difference from New York cruises is that all the deck chairs aren’t gone at 8am on sea days. I’ve been up very early all week and practically no one shows up at the pools until after 7 and even they are few. As with most everything else on the Oasis, it never seems crowded.  You may not always get the exact area you want, but you can find a place to set up shop for a few hours.

oasis of the seas top deck swimming pools sun loungers

The Solarium is beautiful but unfortunately only for those 16yrs+.  We walked through a couple of times but didn’t press our luck by settling in.  It seemed to be warmer in there to me and for that reason I might steer clear of it anyway, but we’ll have to see about that in the future.

This is more or less the hub of activity, so in that respect its the place to be.  The downside though, is that its basically a shopping mall, and one where you can’t afford anything at that. But that aside, its the home of the Promenade Cafe and Sorrento’s which are places you’d likely want if not need.

oasis of the seas promenade christmas tree shopping pub

I used the soda machines at Sorrento’s several times a day.  The pizza there is ok if you absolutely need a pizza fix.  I would place it above Norwegian’s and below Carnival’s.  My favorite part of Sorrento’s is the antipasti corner.  Olives, salami, cheese, peppers, bread and other little things.  There was never a line during my visits even when the pizza line was well out the door.

oasis of the seas sorrentos christmas tree promenade pizza

Promenade Cafe

Promenade Cafe, astoundingly, seemed to be the only place, on a ship with nearly 6000 passengers, to get coffee in the vicinity of 6am.  I still say I had to have been missing something but perhaps not.  Seemed a little wacky to me.  I was up between 5:30 and 6 most mornings for sunrise and it was always quite busy.  Sure, you’ve got Starbucks, I’m not sure what time it opens, but in case you haven’t gathered by now, I’m not paying for something I can get for free. There is also room service which begins at 6am I believe.  Thats only practical if you’re whole cabin is up at that time though.

Guest services

Guest Services is here as well as the photo and shore excursion areas.  Two Dreamworks parades are held here through the week.  I only saw the first.  It was entertaining, but not so much to make an effort to see the second.

oasis of the seas promenade shopping

The Boardwalk is a cute little area and home to the Aqua Theatre and Johnny Rockets among other things. While the show at the Aqua Theatre wasn’t all that impressive, the venue is very nice and in my opinion should be utilized more often. Our sailing was over American Thanksgiving when several football games are televised. A lot of people gathered there that afternoon enjoying the action on the big screens.

oasis of the seas water aqua show

The weather was beautiful, seats are plentiful and a bar is nearby.  What more could you want? I believe movies were shown there at least a few evenings. Also in the Boardwalk is one of the best places on the ship for breakfast, Johnny Rockets.  The menu isn’t extensive, but all the basics are covered and the quality and service are excellent. We ate there twice and sat outside on the Boardwalk, which provides a really nice atmosphere. If Windjammer chaos isn’t your thing, Johnny Rockets is a great no fee alternative.

johnny rockets oasis of the seas

This venue gets a bad rap online, but we were actually impressed by the selection and quality of the food available.  Crowds might be an issue at peak hours, but it was always fine during our visits.  My only problem with the Windjammer is its hours.  They open too late and close mid day between lunch and dinner.  There are two relatively separate sides to the restaurant and I can’t imagine there would ever be a reason for one of them not to be open.  Other food venues are available around the ship, and during peak hours that’s wonderful. Not everyone follows the schedules of the masses though.  This is likely just my Norwegian bias surfacing though, as I am used to the Garden Cafe being available for a snack whenever you want something.

Soda Machines

If you are a heavy soda drinker like me, you’ll love this addition.  To my knowledge they are only available on Oasis class.  I have purchased the soda package for years and am accustomed to stopping at bars all day every day for Pepsi or Coke.  That isn’t a problem as long as they aren’t too crowded, but recently with all the freebies being pushed by Norwegian the crowds have increased.

There are only 7 of the machines on the Oasis. Two in each side of the Windjammer, two on the Promenade at Sorrento’s, and one in the arcade on 15.  Keep in mind the limited availability of the Windjammer, so only 3 of the 7 are available 24hrs and maybe half of the drink selections were available at any machine.  Ice was also sporadically available.  And even considering all of that, these things were great for me and Royal definitely gets points for providing them.

oasis of the seas sunset cruise ship balcony

Main Dining Rooms

The food and service at the Main Dining Rooms were fantastic.  We did early seating dinner and experienced no issues all week.  There is nothing really all that different from other lines though. Well, it differs from Norwegian in that you have the same servers every night, which is always nice.  The food was outstanding and portions were a little bigger than usual in my opinion too.

Entertainment

Surprisingly I score Royal Caribbean fairly low on entertainment.  Cats was by far my favorite of the shows.  The family comedy show on the last night would be second. The skating show would be next.  Followed distantly by the Aqua Theatre show and Come Fly with Me.  They were ok and certainly not bad by any means.  Its just that by listening to Royal Caribbean fans brag about their product, I had come to expect more.

Reservations

One thing you might find of interest is that the advance reservation system means little to nothing in reality.  Two or three times we went to shows at different times/dates than we were supposed to have.  They simply scanned our cards and let us in.  Very weird. They didn’t even scan cards for the ice show and Cats at all.

Comedy club

Mentioning the comedy thing brings up another Royal complaint.  The presence of a permanent Comedy Club on Deck 4 could have been fantastic.  However it is only for those 18+!  Why not offer early family shows and late adult shows like Carnival and NCL?  They did have a family show at the main theatre the last night, which was great.

Jogging Track

I have mixed feelings about the track.  For serious runners/walkers it’s great and actually much better than any other ship I’ve sailed. I say that because it’s uncrowded.  If you just want to get your miles in for the day, its perfect.  However, if you are used to areas like Deck 7 of the Norwegian Jewel class where you can loop the ship while feeling at one with the sea, well, it’s not like that.  You can’t see much of the ocean except for the aft area and a handful of other small places.  Otherwise, you are behind low hanging life boats.  Compared to the track on the Norwegian Breakaway though, where you try to wind through very crowded public areas, it’s very nice.  So, as with most things, it just depends on your perspective.

Plenty of good options for things to do can be found in Cozumel.  Our main objective this visit was to get a cab to Chankanaab Park for a sea lion show and encounter.  The price wasn’t bad and it seemed a bit more interesting than the routine (and more expensive) dolphin encounter.  Royal Caribbean offers a shore excursion to do the dolphin encounter at the same place that includes a buffet lunch with an open bar.  We chose to skip excursion and venture out on our own because a buffet lunch is the last thing you need on a cruise and the sea lions were way more appealing to us.  A cab for 3 was $12ea way and the encounter was $59ea.  All in all a very reasonable investment in my opinion, provided you don’t buy the photos!  Much like the cruise lines, they really gouge you on photos.  I believe he said a single digital photo was $35 or you could get all of them (a bunch) for $300 something. Insane I thought.  As my son preaches, just enjoy and appreciate the moment rather than determining to get the perfect photo.  So that’s what we did.

Falmouth Jamaica

After studying this port a little in the 2 or 3 weeks the cruise line gave us prior to the cruise, we decided not to do much since most of the attractions were either in the Ocho Rios or Montego Bay area.  It’s not our practice to stray that far from the ship.  We did get off and walk around the little touristy area they created for cruisers though.  It was nice enough.  No one was pushy or aggressive from what we could see. Nice time walking around the shops there although I don’t believe we bought anything.  The Margaritaville had a nice pool area for some reason, so that could potentially be a nice atmosphere later in the day.  As is our usual, we were much too early for anything to be going on.

Debarkation

Other options are available if you are still in vacation mode at the end or have a late day flight, but the self-assist walk-off gets you on your way the quickest.  We were up at 5:30am and I noticed at that time that a line was already forming in the Promenade to disembark.  By the time we finished packing, had breakfast (Windjammer is pretty much your only option this day) and got back down to Promenade to leave it was just before 7 and we literally walked right off the ship.  However, as you aware, you’re not done yet at this point.

Unfortunately it was almost another hour until we were through Customs and exiting the building.  That was the only significant queue the entire week.  So thats not a bad trade off I guess.  All in all the time involved with debarkation vs. New York wasn’t all that much different.  Its just in New York, you’re stuck on the ship for the line and in Port Canaveral your line is in the terminal.  Not a big deal.  We were back to the hotel for the car, packed the cooler with ice from the hotel and were on the road by 8:05am.

Oasis of the seas

Overall the cruise was fantastic, as are most in my opinion.  Not every thing was as we are accustomed, but its good to experience new things.  Royal Caribbean excels in many areas.  They must do something right when you can sail on a ship with 5000 or 6000 passengers and hardly ever notice a crowd.  That aspect alone was wonderful.  The food was great all around and Royal quite possibly beats the other lines in that area, at least it did on this ship.  Entertainment was good, just not great. Cats is, as described, a very polarizing show. People tend to either love it or hate it.  I really enjoyed it while the rest of my family gave up before intermission.

The Oasis of the Seas class are absolutely incredible ships and offer areas unlike you’ll find anywhere else at sea.  So Royal Caribbean gets a win there as well.  One thing we did learn this sailing, though, is while having all those things available was very nice, its not a perfect fit for everyone.  I don’t think our cruise could have been any better to be honest.  But, would I be just as happy on the Norwegian Gem, absolutely.  My cruise needs are minimal and can easily be provided on a smaller ship.  That said, the Oasis ships are certainly something that any serious cruiser simply must see.

So those are my thoughts after a week onboard Oasis of the Seas.  I’m sure I missed plenty that I will think of as soon as this goes up.  If there is something else you would like to know about specifically, please let me know and I’ll do my best to answer.  Thanks for reading along.

emma cruises cruising isnt just for old people

Having just got back from my first Royal Caribbean cruise I was so happy when Michael offered to write this post for us! I have caught the Royal Caribbean bug and am keen to learn about other ships. I’m amazed at how many things we found that were the same (windjammer being closed too much and the promenade being full of things you can’t afford). I wish the Independence of the seas had soda machines as I think that is a feature I would use a lot. I hope you’ll write for us again Michael as I honestly feel like I’ve learnt a lot from this post, I’d love to cruise on the Oasis! Thank you millions!!

Odyssey of the Seas

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas is a Quantum Ultra Class cruise ship that's smaller than the other newest vessels from the line. The impressive ship completed its first sailing in 2021 when it became the first ship of its class to sail from the United States. Odyssey of the Seas currently departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and other ports and offers a range of six-night and seven-night sailings throughout the Caribbean in the coming months.

Up to 4,198 guests can sail on the Odyssey of the Seas with double occupancy, and 1,612 crew members are on board to tend to their every need. The ship is approximately 1,138 feet long and is 167,704 gross tons.

  • Sails to: Odyssey of the Seas will depart from various ports in the United States and elsewhere in the world in the coming years. For example, there are upcoming six-night sailings from Fort Lauderdale that include stops in Labadee, Haiti and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in addition to Perfect Day at CocoCay. The vessel will complete a 14-day transatlantic cruise in April and May of 2024, which begins in Fort Lauderdale and ends in Rome, Italy. From there, the vessel will offer Greek Islands cruises from Rome before moving back to Cape Liberty (New York), New Jersey in the fall of 2024. At that point, itineraries will include stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, Nassau in the Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay.
  • Cabin types: Odyssey of the Seas offers interior staterooms, ocean view rooms and balcony staterooms. Guests can also book interior rooms with a virtual balcony that boasts a floor-to-ceiling virtual view of the outdoors. Over-the-top suites available on the Odyssey include an Owner's Loft Suite, a Royal Loft Suite, a Grand Loft Suite and more.
  • Dining options: As a smaller vessel with considerably fewer passengers than Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class and Icon Class ships, Odyssey of the Seas has fewer dining options overall. Guests can dine at seven included eateries including a main dining room, a bistro, a cafe and the main ship buffet. There are also seven specialty restaurants and experiences on board including the Chef's Table, a Chops Grille and a sushi and hibachi restaurant. Like other newer ships from Royal Caribbean, the Odyssey also has its own Starbucks.
  • Features: The Odyssey has eight dedicated bars and lounges on board, bumper cars, laser tag, a rock-climbing wall, an outdoor movie screen and a casino, along with kid and teen features like an arcade, a kids' splash area and a social club. Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | port canaveral chalks up record month amid growing cruise demand.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas arrived to Port Canaveral to home port for the first time on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

Port Canaveral saw just under 800,000 cruise passengers move on and off its ships in March as part of a record year that keeps topping expectations.

That set a one-month record for the port with an average of nearly 25,600 people a day around 93 cruise ship calls. March is traditionally one of the strongest months of the year for the port with its spring break traffic.

It also marked the halfway point of the fiscal year that began in October 2023. Six months in, the port has seen 3.9 million passenger movements from 479 ship calls.

“The industry itself is very, very strong right now,” said Port CEO Capt. John Murray at the port commission meeting on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of expansion plans. The companies are starting to reorder ships again after the pandemic.”

NCL details new dining on Canaveral-bound Norwegian Aqua

That includes more ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, which has been sending its new vessels to Port Canaveral as they debut including next year’s Norwegian Aqua.

“So a lot of great things, a lot of great things, a lot of enthusiasm and I can say that the industry is 110% of what it was prior to the pandemic,” Murray said. “They are back and booming right now. So we’re fortunate to be taking advantage of that here at the port.”

Operating revenue for the year is already at $98 million, which is $3.6 million above budget. It also means the record projection of $187 million in operating revenue through the end of the fiscal year in September is likely to get surpassed as well.

Ship capacity is determined to be at 100% if each stateroom is occupied by two passengers, so ships sailing with families, for instance, will push capacity above 100% and in turn increase revenue for the port from the cruise lines as well as add to an uptick in parking charges.

Royal Caribbean to send massive Utopia of the Seas to Port Canaveral

One of the big drivers has been the addition of a second Oasis-class vessel by Royal Caribbean so that the port hosts two of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Allure of the Seas joined Wonder of the Seas last fall to begin short three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas, and will continue that until the debut of Royal’s new Utopia of the Seas this summer. Since arriving, it has added more than 650,000 passenger movements to the port’s growing tally.

The port has been home port to 13 ships from Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and MSC Cruises, and is set to welcome its first ships from both Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.

Port Canaveral plots timeline to take over marina for new cruise terminal

Right now it has six cruise terminals, but is beginning the work to eventually build a seventh later this decade. During an interview earlier in April at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach, Murray said the key to growth for the port will be a shift in how the port gives access to each terminal, such as how it plans to operate its seventh terminal.

“It’s going to be multiuser. It’s not going to be a single-use facility. That’s going to be how our concept of operations would be going forward,” Murray said. “The only way you’re going to get good utilization of a terminal is if you can put multiple brands in there and not have it dedicated to just one user.”

That’s how it runs several of its terminals now including Disney Cruise Line at Cruise Terminal 8 and Carnival Cruise Line at its newest terminal, Cruise Terminal 3.

“If they’ve got seven days a week at one terminal and they’re only using three, maybe four days, that’s not high utilization,” Murray said. “Yet, it’s a facility that we’ve got blocked out that we’re not getting any benefit from it for the investment we’ve made.”

He notes Cruise Terminal 10, which gets used by three brands, gets used six days a week.

Murray said with newer and bigger ships on order from all the major lines, the demand is just going to continue to spike for parking space at Florida’s big three ports.

“I think the point now for all of the major brands is finding somewhere to operate,” Murray said. “Because there’s only Miami, [and] we all know how full Miami is; Everglades, [which has] limited capacity or opportunity for growth; and we have more land, but you know, it’s not all going to get committed to the cruise industry.”

“So the question is, how do we allow more opportunities for the cruise lines to operate? This is one — get high utilization out of the terminal.”

It is part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class of ships featuring an impressive array of amenities, such as an indoor ice skating rink, a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator, a rock climbing wall, a water park, a 259 ft Ultimate Abyss waterslide, an aqua theater, and neighborhoods filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Cruise passengers will be entertained with Broadway-caliber shows.

Disney Treasure, the latest addition to the Disney Cruise Line, will launch in December this year, marking a significant milestone after a decade since the launch of the last Disney cruise ship. The ship has 1256 cabins and suites, each designed with a theme inspired by Disney movies like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas.

Passengers on the cruise are in for a treat, with exciting Broadway-style musicals and the Aqua Mouse, a thrilling Disney water ride. The themed restaurants on board are another highlight, featuring a Marvel-themed restaurant and a Mexican restaurant inspired by the movie Coco. And if that wasn’t enough, the ship also features a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar, resembling a classic ocean liner’s haunted drawing room, serving ghostly cocktails.

With a capacity of 728 passengers, the Silver Ray is a small ship that offers an all-balcony cabin experience, complete with walk-in closets and butler service.

But that’s not all. The Silver Ray is also an eco-friendly cruise ship, making it the first hybrid, luxury cruise ship to be completely emission-free while in port. It does this by using fuel cells and batteries to power the ship.

The Silver Ray will begin its maiden voyage season sailing in the Mediterranean, before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, where it will offer South America cruise itineraries. Check the prices for Silversea cruises .

Brilliant Lady

  • Launching TBA 2024

Explora II is the latest ship of Explora Journeys, MSC Group’s newest addition to its luxury brand. With a capacity of slightly over 900 passengers, it’s a smaller cruise ship that promises a more personalized experience for its guests.

Passengers on board the ship will be treated to a range of luxurious amenities that include oversized suites, welcome champagne bottles, an exclusive whiskey and cigar bar with rare whiskeys, an expansive spa, and plenty of bespoke experiences. The ship will sail in the Mediterranean, perfect for passengers looking for a luxurious and intimate cruising experience.
