And if you visit in December, you can pretty much get the best out of it. Are you ready to plan the most memorable trip of your life? Let’s go!

I’m sure the thing you’re most interested in about your Thailand December vacation is the weather. You probably know Thailand is a year-round sunny destination, but you’ve also heard about the dreadful wet season. Don’t worry; December is on the sunny side of things. The weather is different for the different areas, though. 

• Bangkok The capital of Thailand is also one of the most exciting cities in the world. So even if your goal is to spend the trip on one of the magical Thai beaches, I recommend spending a few days in Bangkok as well. December is one of the best months to do that. The temperatures are between 20°C and 31°C (68-81°F), and there are only 7% chances of rain on average.
• Chiang Mai The capital of the North is one of the most charming cities in the Kingdom. Known for its lush jungles, signature dishes, and elephant interactions, it’s a magnet for tourists. Being further north, the temperatures are way milder than the ones in Bangkok or the islands. Ranging between 14°C and 26°C (57-78°F) with only a 7% chance of rain, the weather in Chiang Mai in December is as perfect as possible.

• Phuket Phuket is the prime beach destination in Thailand. Having two international airports in the area means it’s easy to spend your entire December in Thailand trip there and pump your vitamin D levels to the max. The temperatures are pretty consistent, with averages between 26°C and 28°C (79-83°F), but the rain expectation is rather high, at a 56% chance of precipitation. While this may seem pretty bad for a beach destination, keep in mind there are only four months with less rain expectation than December, and Phuket is still considered one of the best beach destinations in the world.
• Koh Samui Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is the most significant island in the Chumphon Archipelago. Alongside the nearby Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, the archipelago is famous for its party life, fancy resorts, and diving spots. December is the first month after the wet season in Koh Samui, offering temperatures ranging between 26°C and 29°C (80-84°F) with around 30% chance of rain.

Cons to Spending December in Thailand

• Crowds Being as perfect as it is, spending December in Thailand is an idea that circles around millions of heads. So you can expect thick crowds around most attractions and beaches. The good thing is there are countless opulent temples and golden shores in the Kingdom, so finding a tranquil one is not that hard.
• Prices Prices are always at their highest during the peak tourist months. And while the food increase won’t be noticeable, hotels and plane tickets cost way more in December. That’s why if you want a nice accommodation without having to spend a fortune, I recommend organizing your  Thai itinerary  at least three months ahead.
• Shorter Days. December in Thailand offers the least amount of daylight hours. And while the amount is not mindblowing (around 3 hours less), it’s still less time to spend exploring landmarks and beaches.

How to get Around Thailand

Since the weather is good, you can use all the transportation options the Kingdom offers. Air Asia have reasonably priced tickets, but you still have to deal with the whole airport hassle. Still, for long distances, it’s the best way to travel.

 For not that long distances, I like to use the Thai buses. Way cheaper than planes and almost hassle-free. For the islands, obviously, you’ll have to use ferries and fast boats. The best place to find all kinds of transportation in Thailand (and other parts of Asia) is, by far,  12go.asia .

To be completely independent, you can  rent a car  and use it inside the cities as well. Remember, though, that in Thailand, they drive on the left side of the road, so it may be a bit tricky.

What to do in Thailand in December

Everything is open during December in Thailand, so you can visit the biggest attractions in your area (for more info,  check here ).  The December-specific activities are:

• Christmas Although Thai people are mostly Buddhist, they do celebrate the birth of Jesus. While they don’t care about Jesus that much but more about Santa, you can still find plenty of Christmas wholesales, Christmas parties, and Christmas-themed shops.
• New Year’s Eve Thai New Year, also known as Songkran, is celebrated in April and has nothing to do with our New Year (water guns and stuff). Thai people love to party, though, so you can expect lavish celebrations, fireworks, and all the mandatory New Year’s Eve things on December 31st. 

• King’s Birthday Celebrated on December 5th, this is actually their previous beloved King’s birthday. It’s a national holiday where Thai people honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej (also known as Rama IX) by dressing in yellow. 
• Chiang Mai Red Cross and Winter Fair Starting at the end of December and lasting for two weeks, Chiang Mai’s favorite fair is a treat for all ages and includes various food competitions, a Ferris wheel, and everything you can expect from a good fair.

• Loy Krathong Usually held at the end of November, the celebrations for Thailand’s most picturesque holiday often last well into December.  Don’t know what Loy Kratong is? Well, you’ve probably seen a picture with thousand lanterns flowing in the air (or in the rivers). This is Loy Kratong – the incredibly scenic festival of light.

The weather in Thailand in December is generally pleasant, with mild temperatures ranging from 22°C to 32°C.

December is high to peak season in Thailand and one of the reasons that is the case is because the weather is brilliant. Lots of sunshine down south, little rain and the temperatures are comfortable without being scalding or freezing.

To be honest the entire country is all very good. You've got relatively moderate temperatures across the entire country and very little to no rain. Underwater visibility is great, making December a great time for diving around Thailand. If anything, the main concern, if you want to call it that, is that the country will be filling up as December and January are peak season – booking your accommodation in advance can be prudent.

As already mentioned, great weather across the country makes all the islands pretty good. The classic Thai islands such as Phuket , Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi on the west coast, Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao in the southern Gulf and Ko Samet , Ko Chang and Ko Kut in the east, will all be busy and deservedly so.

If you're planning a stay on Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lipe in southwest Thailand over the Christmas and New Year period, having a reservation in advance would be prudent as these two are traditionally at near capacity at this time of the year.

You shouldn't run into any rain whatsoever in Bangkok in December. Temperatures will swing between low 20s and low 30s Celsius and you can expect a lot of clear blue skies. Bangkok at its best.

Like Bangkok and Central Thailand, Ko Chang and the surrounding islands are lovely in December. Very little rain, with plenty of sunshine and comfortable mid-range temperatures. Crowding will become a bit of an issue as things build up towards Christmas and New Year.

Chiang Mai in December sees little rain and comfortable, almost cool daytime temperatures. Evenings can be cold and if you're trekking you will need at least a long-sleeved top — locals will be running around in leather jackets and 52 layers. A great time to explore Chiang Mai and beyond.

As with Northern and Central Thailand, temperatures will be about as moderate as it gets in northeast Thailand — even a bit chilly in the evenings — and they'll be little rain to speak of.

The only region that sees much rain in December, the Gulf Coast of Thailand sees a bit of rain — expect some rain every other day — but between the rain you'll get decent blasts of sunshine to help you recuperate. Despite the rain, December can be very busy, especially on Ko Tao and Ko Pha Ngan .

More glorious weather — and the crowds flock to it. In December on Thailand's west coast you can expect a lot of sunshine with just the very occasional shower. The weather is definitely better on this coast than the Gulf Coast — though not as good as on Ko Chang. Some islands, like Ko Phi Phi are packed to the rafters in December. A fine choice.

         When December comes, it’s the mid cool season and the average temperature in Thailand is the lowest of the year, especially at the top of the mountains. Some places have a negative temperature and become a popular attraction for adventurous travellers who want to challenge the freezing breeze. Moreover, both coasts of the Andaman and the Gulf of Thailand are full of many gorgeous attractions for all. The signal of the transition of time to the New Year is the thundering sound of celebration fireworks throughout the country.

         December and its cold weather is perfect for visiting colourful floral fields “Amazing Cosmos & Sunflower Farm” and “Pumpkin Patch” at Jim Thompson’s Farm, Nakhon Ratchasima, the Gateway to the Northeast. Then continue your trip at Wang Nam Khiao, which is called, the Switzerland of the Northeast with fresh air and the Krating (the Indian Bison) Viewpoint. Now let’s move to the upper part of the Northeast. In Loei, we can view Phu Pa Po, which is called Mt. Fuji of Thailand or another viewpoint at Phu Kradueng, which has a breath-taking view of nature. Activities tourists can join is the Phu Ruea Christmas Tree Festival and enjoy taking photos of the bright red colour of poinsettia leaves.

At Doi Ang Khang there is a royal project studying about temperate climate fruits and plants and if the temperature is quite low, frost can be seen. Let’s try a new romantic experience at Pang Ung, a huge reservoir on the top of the high mountain with a gorgeous picture of the sun’s reflection from the water’s waves mixed with a light mist. And that’s the reason why this place is called the “Switzerland of Thailand ”.

         An accommodation place which is so cute and heart-warming, is undoubtedly Ban Rak Thai Village situated among a mountainous atmosphere, sea of mist and blooming flowers. Sitting back and having a warm cup of tea in the morning is absolutely a nice experience.

         In the South, December is the month that both tourists and entrepreneurs are waiting for because the monsoon season has already gone, so every attraction can be visited both on the Andaman Coast; such as, Ko Lipe, Ko Tarutao in Satun, Ko Muk, Ko Kradan, Ko Rok in Trang and other  islands in Krabi, which are phenomenal and deserve the name “Queen of the Andaman”.          It’s still not completed if the Christmas Festival and Countdown Festival are not mentioned here because these festivals are held magnificently in many provinces; such as, the Christmas Star Procession at Ban Ta Rae, one of Thailand ’s largest Roman Catholic communities. Even in Bangkok, a city that never sleeps, fully decorated Christmas trees with colourful lights can be viewed at many places. The Countdown Festival is held on the last day of the year, and there are lots of activities which are local products and food for sale, live concerts by popular singers ending up with the New Year Countdown and spectacular fireworks.

Cities such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai tend to be cool rather than cold at night and it’s usually still warm enough for short-sleeve shirts, but in more rural areas and the further into the mountains you go (e.g. Pai ) there can be a distinct chill in the night air with hotels and guest-houses providing blankets in rooms. Locals in northern Thailand will often be seen wearing jackets, scarves and hats as they scoot around on motorbikes. Whilst most tourists are unlikely to go to those extremes, you may want a light jacket or something to cover your shoulders when you go out at night in the north of Thailand. The further south in Thailand you go the less disparity there is between daytime and night-time temperatures.

Rainfall levels are generally low throughout Thailand in December although you will notice from the table below that Ko Samui sticks out as having a higher amount of average rainfall. This is because of the effect of the north-east monsoon on the weather over Ko Samui and parts of the Gulf Coast. Rainfall amounts usually drop off significantly by mid-December on Ko Samui, but it is still possible that you may catch a rain-shower during your stay. This is also true for other areas of Thailand, particularly in the first week or two of December, but by the middle of the month, most of the country settles into a sustained period of dry, warm and sunny weather.

Which is the Best Thai Island or Beach Resort to Visit in December?

Wherever you opt to go, you have to keep in mind that December is peak season so all beach resorts and islands will be busier than normal and you should book your hotel or guest-house in advance. As pointed out above, Ko Samui and the nearby islands on Thailand’s lower Gulf Coast (e.g. Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao ) statistically experience higher levels of rainfall in December and the weather, particularly in the first few weeks of the month, can be a mixed bag. The pattern can vary from year to year, but by mid-December the weather is often more settled on Ko Samui and the island is firmly established as one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations over Christmas and New Year. For more consistently sunny days, you should consider the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi etc.) or the Eastern Seaboard (Pattaya, Ko Chang etc.). Phuket has traditionally been very popular with package tourists in December whilst somewhere like Ko Lanta attracts more independent travellers and those looking for somewhere quieter. It’s difficult to say which island or beach in Thailand is the best to visit in December because it ultimately it boils down to your own personal preferences and choices.

Events & Festivals

Many tourists visit Thailand in December to experience Christmas and New Year away from the cold winter of their home country. Despite being a predominantly Buddhist country, Thailand hasn’t been slow to embrace the non-religious and commercial elements of the festive period so don’t be surprised if you see Christmas trees in shopping malls and hotel staff wearing Santa hats. From Chiang Mai to Bangkok to Phuket, there are hotels and restaurants which will serve some version of a Christmas dinner should you feel the urge. Equally, if you’ve come to Thailand to escape the excesses of the festive period, you can just as easily eat Thai food every day at hawker stalls and local restaurants.

Thailand celebrates the traditional Thai New Year with the Songkran Water Festival in April, but the end of the calendar year is also a big event throughout the country. December 31 and New Year’s Day are public holidays in Thailand with the lead up to the break resulting in increased demand for trains, flights and buses as people travel home to see family or just take advantage of the holiday. Keep this in mind if you intend to travel internally within Thailand over the New Year period and it is strongly recommended to book your travel and accommodation in advance. New Year’s Eve is also a time for making-merit at temples and there are many Thai Buddhists who welcome in the New Year by attending religious ceremonies inside their local wat . Of course, this being Thailand there is plenty of New Year sanuk too with a number of cities and resorts putting on ‘Countdown’ (pronounced ‘cao-dao’ in Thai) events with music concerts, firework displays and general festivities. Bangkok and Pattaya play host to the biggest Countdown events, but just about everywhere in Thailand will have something going on in one form or another. In Chiang Mai, it’s another chance to release khom loy sky lanterns and float away bad luck.

December 5 is the birthday of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and a public holiday in Thailand. It’s a day where tributes are made to the Thai monarch with towns and cities all over the country hosting special events and firework displays. It’s also a day which usually sees restrictions on alcohol sales and the playing of loud music at entertainment venues. These rules don’t normally apply to hotels and resorts and you may also find that, depending on where you are in Thailand, there are local ‘agreements’ in place between police and some of the entertainment venues which allow them to remain open with music turned down and alcohol served in coffee cups! December 10 is another public holiday in Thailand for Constitution Day , but there are no restrictions on alcohol sales or entertainment venues as there are for HM the King’s birthday.

With ideal weather luring travelers from their dark winters, Thailand gets busy. High season becomes crowded, particularly in January and February. Here's what you need to know and pack to really enjoy winter in Thailand.

The Busy Season in Thailand

As with most countries that experience monsoon seasons, improving weather lures more and more travelers to enjoy sunny days. This is particularly true in winter when those travelers are weary of scraping ice from windshields at home.

Thailand is a popular destination and stays pretty well busy throughout the year. Bangkok often surpasses London, Paris, and New York as the most visited city in the world. As the high season hits in December, the tourism floodgates really open. Popular destinations get busier than ever during winter in Thailand. Book early, especially if you'll be traveling in January and February.

Haze and Smoke in Thailand

Annual slash-and-burn agricultural practices start fires that burn out of control, mostly in Northern Thailand. The haze and smoke from these fires linger, causing respiratory issues and even occasionally prompting the shutdown of Chiang Mai’s international airport.

The haze really peaks in March and April , however, there’s a chance that some fires will already be burning in February or sooner. Travelers with asthma or other respiratory problems should check the particulate matter levels for Northern Thailand before traveling there.

Thailand Weather in Winter

December, January, and February are typically the months with the best weather in Thailand. From November to February, daily humidity drops to between 60 – 70 percent. Mean temperatures stay in the low 80s F (28 – 29 degrees C). Those numbers may still sound a little high, but they're way more comfortable than the rest of the year!

Although nice and warm, Thailand is situated neatly in the Northern Hemisphere. "Winter" refers to the months of December , January , and February .

Unless the monsoon is running late, expect virtually no rain in Bangkok for December. Meanwhile, the islands in the Samui Archipelago will still be receiving a little rain.

Nights can really feel cool in the north, especially after hot afternoons. Dress warmly if you'll be among the many people who drive a motorbike along the scenic, mountainous road from Chiang Mai to Pai .

February is the last month of ideal weather for visiting Thailand before heat and humidity begin to build again in March.

Seasonal fires during March cause air-quality issues in North Thailand, making February the best month to go. Conditions in the islands will be perfect.

Nighttime temperatures in places such as Pai in the mountains of Northern Thailand can feel chilly after hot afternoons, but temperatures never really dip below the mid-60s Fahrenheit. A light cover-up or thin jacket will suffice; you’ll want one anyway for the freezing temperatures on buses due to the drivers’ overuse of air conditioning.

The default, footwear of choice in Southeast Asia , and many other parts of Asia, is the simple flip-flop sandal. From the islands to big cities, locals wear them daily. If you are visiting temples, it's easy to take them off before going in . If you don't plan on going to up-scale establishments or doing any serious trekking, you could actually get by just fine on your trip with a single pair of flip-flops!

Have a good plan for waterproofing your passport and luggage for late, pop-up showers in the islands.

Winter Events in Thailand

Most of Thailand’s biggest festivals , aside from Chinese New Year, tend to be in either spring or fall rather than winter. Other areas of Asia do have key winter festivals . For Thailand, you can expect to see these winter celebrations:

• Father's Day (Formerly the King's Birthday Holiday): December 5 is commemorated as the birthday of King Bhumibol, the late King of Thailand. The date is set aside for remembering him with candlelight vigils in places such as Bangkok. December 5 is a public holiday and also National Day in Thailand. The King's Birthday celebration is now July 28 to observe King Maha Vajiralongkorn's Birthday.
• Lunar New Year : Lunar New Year is observed in Thailand with lion dances, parades, stage shows, and lots of fireworks. The holiday can be a very busy time to travel in Bangkok, and throughout Asia, for that matter. Prices for flights and accommodation sometimes spike as demand increases.

Christmas in Thailand

Christmas is observed in big cities around Thailand, particularly Bangkok and Chiang Mai where large expat communities call home. The many malls in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area will have Christmas trees and decorations in place, although not nearly as over the top as is seen in the United States. You may even get to see a Thai Santa Claus!

The Christmas Full Moon Party at Haad Rin on the island of Koh Phangan is one of the largest of the year. More than 30,000 travelers will meet on the beach to party for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

• Remember that winter is the busiest time to travel in Thailand. Try to stay patient, take breaks, and arrive early when visiting big attractions such as the Grand Palace in Bangkok . Also, remember that you are the boss of your trip. If someplace ceases to be fun because people are jostling for photos—leave!
• Although Thailand's weather is ideal in the winter months, it's still probably way warmer than you left at home. Remember to protect yourself from the sun, and make an extra effort to stay hydrated. Drinking fresh coconut water is an excellent option .
• Like much of Asia, Thailand has a culture of haggling. Do a little friendly negotiating when making purchases in the markets—it's expected—but understand that getting discounts during winter in Thailand is harder to do than when traveling during the low season .

Silky-soft beaches, jungle-draped mountains, incredible food and a well-connected position at the heart of Southeast Asia have made Thailand a tourism hub for decades.

It welcomes more than 11 million visitors a year. All the same, travelers who dream of perpetually sunny skies and balmy weather might be dismayed at the pelting rain that arrives like clockwork every July or the sky-high price of their hotel from December to January.

The kingdom is full of diversions – myriad night markets, thundering waterfalls, even cherry blossoms and the occasional dusting of frost – but to experience them for yourself, you need to be in the right place at the right time. Here’s how.

December to February is best for beaches

The prevailing joke about Thai weather is that the country has three seasons: hot; wet and hot; and really, really hot. That may be, but when the “cool” season rolls around in December, you will find Thais bundled up in sweaters and even puffer jackets to combat temperatures that fall as low as 23°C (73°F).

While this may be cold for Thais, it’s perfect for international travelers hitting the beach, especially those escaping the northern winter, and resorts like Phuket , Samui and Krabi are predictably packed with sun-seekers at this time of year.

Daytime highs of 31°C (88°F) make outdoor activities warm but bearable, while nights are a hive of activity, with street food vendors lining the sidewalks and markets clad in fairy lights tempting even the most unwilling of shoppers.

The cool season is not for beachcombers alone. This time of year sees frost up north in the mountains as temperatures drop to 13°C (55°F). The northeast region even ushers in its own cherry blossom season as Phu Lom Lo erupts in a burst of pink Himalayan cherry blooms. Early morning hikers are rewarded with sunrise views over a sea of fog at the northern border with Laos , and wildflowers dapple the slopes of Doi Suthep and Phu Tabberk .

Not surprisingly then, this time is considered Thailand’s high season, when hotel and transportation prices are at their peak. However, the payoff is the kingdom at arguably its most beautiful and welcoming, temperature-wise.

March and April are best for tropical fruit and Songkran

The weather, even for Thais, becomes alarmingly toasty during Thailand’s “summer” when temperatures average 30°C (87°F). School is out, meaning the capital is less crowded than usual, and the beaches are typically jammed with Bangkokians seeking reprieve from the heat. Meanwhile, temperatures in the usually temperate north soar to 36°C (97°F).

While it may seem a miserable time to visit, foodies will have a field day because all of Thailand’s most beloved fruits – mangoes, mangosteens, rambutans and Marian plums – are in season.

In mid-April, Thailand celebrates its new year, Songkran , and the streets burst into joyful water fights. You’ll find the entire country in celebration: families seeking blessings from their elders, Thais dancing in the streets, and travelers receiving benedictions in the form of perfumed water on the hands, daubings of brightly colored powder on the cheeks or (most likely) a blast of water in the face. Fans of water fights (and getting drenched) will find their like-minded brethren anywhere in the kingdom.

Meanwhile, fans of an empty Bangkok can take advantage of… an empty Bangkok. That means breezy commutes from one end of the city to the other, less competition at popular restaurants and fewer crowds to contend with at shopping malls and theaters. The change in the city is so pronounced that quite a few Bangkokians prize this time of year, opting to make sure that when Songkhran rolls around, they celebrate in the capital.

May to October is best for accommodation bargains

Thailand’s rainy season is long, but it doesn’t necessarily mean non-stop torrential downpours. Monsoon rains, especially before July, are typically violent but short, usually arriving in the early evening and lasting for 20 to 30 minutes. (Luckily, Thailand’s location means it avoids the strong typhoons experienced by Vietnam and the Philippines.) The problem is Bangkok traffic snarls for hours as a result, but travelers in less congested destinations are not necessarily affected, and hotel and transportation prices linger at months-long lows.

From May to July, beach resorts on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand – especially on weekdays – are basically deserted, claiming only a fraction of the prices they would normally charge during high season. This means that even at five-star resorts, choice rooms can be rented for far less than their usual rate. And while there will likely be daily rains, they’re usually brief.

Low-season rates extend to non-beach-but-still-popular destinations like Chiang Mai and Khao Sok , where a treasure trove of accommodation options, from floating bungalows to mountaintop cabins, awaits savvy bargain hunters willing to put up with a sudden shower or two. In contrast, July and August are peak season for islands in the Gulf of Thailand like Samui , where the weather is less affected by monsoon rains.

From September to October, the northeast is brimming with waterfalls, providing impromptu bathing areas for visitors with the foresight to bring bathing suits or even just towels. A word of warning: this is also when flooding may occur in the north or northeast, with water reaching all the way to Bangkok in some years. Only riverside areas are at risk, so make sure to check before you go.

November is best for experiencing Loi Krathong

November marks the beginning of the dry season and is considered the shoulder to high season, but bargains can still be found among the bigger local hotel chains.

On the night of November’s full moon, the country celebrates its Loi Krathong festival, marking the end of the rainy season. This is also when people float away their sins by placing candles on makeshift river rafts or lanterns in hopes of welcoming the coming year with a clean slate.
