Dreaming of an island getaway right now? What about one that’s surprisingly affordable? Well this list is for you! Here are the 21 cheapest island vacations that you need in your life.

As a beach-lover and someone who’s always making my vacation dollars stretch, I’ve been on some pretty cheap island getaways. But I know I haven’t seen them all , so I recruited some back up.

I asked my favorite travel bloggers to help! Covering regions from all over the world, this list of the cheapest island vacations is going to inspire you to start searching for flights !

Best of the Caribbean – island vacations for cheap

Let’s head to one of my favorite regions of the world first – the Caribbean! Crisp, white sand beaches meet beautiful, warm water. You’ll find a diverse culture in the Caribbean, with delicious food and even more sought-after beaches.

1. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana is one of the most famous destinations in the Caribbean. While there are definitely a lot of luxury resorts in the area, it’s also possible to travel to Punta Cana for a cheap island vacation.

When traveling on a budget, you have 2 options to organize your vacation in Punta Cana. If you like a beach vacation with food, drinks, entertainment and activities included, you can book one of the cheap all-inclusive resorts Punta Cana has to offer. For as low as $60 USD per person per night, you can get decent accommodations.

In general, the quality in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic is amazingly good, considering what you get for your money. Even in an affordable all-inclusive resort, you have food, drinks and entertainment included all day long.

If you prefer to travel on your own, you can also book one of the several Airbnbs in Punta Cana or individual accommodations. In Bavaro, rates start from around $15 USD per room per night. This is particularly recommendable if you want to explore all the hidden gems Punta Cana has to offer.

Secluded waterfalls, off-the-beaten-track hikes and pristine beaches are just some of the things you can explore. Public transport in Punta Cana is available for as low as 1 USD per ride.

Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic are safe to visit either way. For whatever way of travel you decide, you’ll have a great island vacation for cheap in Punta Cana!

2. Caye Caulker, Belize

A short boat ride from Belize City sits the tropical island of Caye Caulker. It’s just 5 miles long and a few blocks wide. The aqua blue waters will have you thinking you’ve just stepped onto a Caribbean island. T he prices on the island will make you believe you’ve stepped back into the 1980’s.

From world-class snorkeling and scuba diving to renting a bicycle and traversing the few square miles of this mostly desolate island, Caye Caulker , Belize is the ultimate cheap island getaway in Central America . The food, drinks and accommodation on the island will set you back just a fraction of the cost of a Caribbean getaway. And you’ll see far fewer people, too.

But arguably the coolest trait about this spectacular vacation destination is that the only cars allowed on the island are government vehicles that fix powerlines and other utilities. Otherwise, you won’t hear honking horns and there will be no cars to watch for when crossing the bicycle and golf-cart filled dirt streets.

It’s pretty easy to do Caye Caulker on a budget . It’s easy to save big if you stay in a hostel, take in the plentiful happy hours and go snorkeling for free off the many nearby reefs , including Iguana Reef at the edge of town.

3. Turks & Caicos Islands (one of my favorite cheap island getaways)

If you’re looking for soft white sand with the most turquoise blue water you’ve ever seen, you need to go to Turks and Caicos! The best part of visiting this island chain is that it’s cheaper than you’d think!

You’ll find plenty of things to do in Turks and Caicos , including some of the best beaches in all of the Caribbean!

Here are 4 ways to doing Turks and Caicos for cheap:

• Stay in a vacation rental off the beach. Skip the pricey hotels on this island to save big!
• Book cheap flights using flight alerts like FareDrop . I saved hundreds on flights this way!
• Avoid peak tourism season for better prices. Travelers typically escape to Turks and Caicos over the winter and summer months, so try a trip in the spring or fall instead.
• Hit the grocery store when you first arrive. Packing simple meals for the beach means less money at pricey restaurants.

Turks and Caicos islands are one of my favorite cheapest island vacations I’ve ever done. I’d 100% recommend adding this one to your bucket list!

4. Isla Holbox, Mexico

Mexico is one of the best destinations for budget travelers who are looking for beaches and beautiful weather. However, many people never make it beyond Mexico’s tourist hotspot of Cancun. It’s a shame, because just a few hours away there’s a stunning island waiting to be discovered.

Isla Holbox is the perfect island destination for people who love relaxed and laid-back vibes and cool street art. There are almost no cars at Isla Holbox, so the best way to get around and explore this small island is by bike or golf car.

Some of the best things to do are going on boat tours to visit more islands around Isla Holbox, check out the mangroves and potentially crocodiles, see bioluminescence, go whale shark watching, chill at the beach, and of course sip cocktails at sunset!

Which brings us to one of the best budget-saving tips for Isla Holbox.

Generally speaking, island life is more expensive than living on the mainland, and the same applies to Isla Holbox. However, we’re still talking about relatively cheap Mexican standards here, making it one of the cheapest island vacations there is.

5. Varadero, Cuba

Just 2 hours east of Havana, Cuba, Varadero is the beach you’re likely picturing when you think of a Caribbean. It has perfectly crystal waters and endless white sand . Despite being a favorite for visitors to Cuba and within Cuba alike, it still remains a budget friendly getaway.  

One secret to  travel to Varadero  that makes it budget friendly comes from its expansive length of white sand beach. It’s almost 18 kilometers, most of which is public, and with public entrances every few blocks.

With access to relatively private and serene spots all up and down the beach, you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. Especially if you’re not staying in an expensive all-inclusive resort just a few minutes’ walk down the beach.  

Airbnbs and private home rentals in Varadero can be quite inexpensive as well. Some are beachside or just a block or 2 from the water. Just a few blocks off the the main road where many restaurants and bars cluster, you’ll find a variety of inexpensive restaurants. Delicious Cuban food goes for just $4 or $5 for a complete meal.

A favorite budget splurge in Varadero is fresh lobster, which you can find for under $10. You can enjoy beach excursions by catamaran to nearby white sand cays. Also popular are trips to nearby underwater caves with their own swimming holes under the stalactites.

Cheapest island vacations in the USA

It may be hard to believe that an island vacation in the USA can be affordable, but it’s possible! Cheap island vacations are kinda my thing and I’ve been on many USA getaways on a dime. Here are a few of my favorites!

6. Oahu, Hawaii

Most people think Hawaii is a very expensive spot. But there are ways to have a very cheap vacation to the islands. If you visit the main island hub at Oahu, more flights are offered to Honolulu. Many with cheap flight incentives to travel to the island.

Also cheaper hotels, bargain website offerings, staying at vacation rentals and even camping can be cheaper alternatives. Visiting the main attractions can also be affordable if you do them on your own and take public transportation which is easy.

Outdoor adventure activities like snorkeling, swimming and renting a cheap boogie boards are an inexpensive way to enjoy a day at the beach. One of the best, inexpensive ways to see the island is on foot, like these easy Oahu hikes that are perfect for beginners or traveling families.

Eating can also be fairly cheap with food trucks, food courts and take out counters with delicious local food offerings. If you do a lot of picnics with a view, you’ll definitely save from high fine dining prices. And you’ll get the same or better views!

7. Key West (a surprisingly cheap island vacation)

Key West, Florida is a super fun island the furthest south you can drive in the continental USA. The Florida Keys are individual islands connected by over-the-water bridges, making this island chain a unique part of the United States.

Furthest south you’ll find Key West. It’s a common stop for Caribbean cruises and has a reputation as a party city. But with all the history and family-friendly activities, it can be enjoyed by most anyone looking for a cheap island getaway.

Key West can be pricey if you’re not careful, but can also be done for cheap if you get creative!

Flights directly into Key West can be expensive, so the best way to get there is to fly into Miami. From there, and take a Miami to Key West road trip . But don’t hang onto the rental car during your time on the island. Bikes are the preferred way to get around and can be rented for a fraction of the cost.

Also be sure to avoid peak season, which is the winter months. They’re the priciest and the beaches will be full.

When you’re in Key West, make sure to catch a sunset at Mallory Square, take a kayaking tour through the mangroves and dine on a delicious slice of world-famous key lime pie!

8. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico is an absolutely gorgeous city on the northern coast of the Caribbean island. It is also one of the cheapest island destinations in the USA.

The reason it’s so affordable is that most people still haven’t discovered this gem. San Juan is known for its historic old district bubbling with risque bars, old taverns and the birthplace of the Pina Colada.

One of the best things to do in Old San Juan is walk the cool city. You’ll discover the proud castles Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal that stand on the edge of the cliff.

You’ll find other interesting places like Chocobar Cortes and the famous Calle Fortaleza with the hundred hanging umbrellas. Of course, the gleaming beaches spread across Puerto Rico are equally enticing. (A favorite among beach lovers is the stunning Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico .)

The bioluminescent bays sparkle like a thousand stars during the night and visitors love to take tours to see them in the bays near San Juan. Lastly the El Yunque rainforest is probably one of the most gorgeous hikes you will ever do.

The best thing about San Juan is that it is a very affordable destination. If you are a budget traveler you’ll find plenty of good clean hostels. The food and transportation are also surprisingly very low compared to the other good beach destinations. San Juan is definitely one place where you can enjoy the best of both worlds .

9. Kauai, Hawaii

Well it might be hard to believe that Hawaii can be on this list of cheapest island vacations. As someone who’s been to Kauai on a budget, it’s 100% possible and also 100% amazing!

The first thing I’d recommend is watching for cheap flights using FareDrop . You could also use credit card or airline rewards points !

For accommodations, skip the pricey hotels. I’ve visited Hawaii many times and can tell you that you’ll likely be spending most of your time outside. So you really don’t need a pricey hotel room.

Lastly, opt for cheap entertainment. While one of my favorite memories on a trip to Hawaii was a helicopter tour over the NaPali coast , it was a splurge. Instead, hit the best beaches in Kauai – which are all free!

And if you’re an avid hiker, then this is your paradise! My favorite easy hike was the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trial (with spectacular ocean views). A more challenging hike was the Waimea Canyon Trail , which opened up to one of the most stunning views of Kauai ever.

Affordable islands in Europe

Let’s head to Europe for the next few islands! A region known for it’s picturesque blue water and and stunning sea-side villages, you’ll surely find a European island vacation for cheap to visit.

10. Ios Island Greece

In the last few years, Ios has become a haven for backpackers thanks to its buzzing nightlife, stunning towns and beaches, and relatively cheap accommodation. Whether you’re there to dance ’til dawn or not, you can certainly find a load of great things to see and do on Ios island on a budget.

Some of the best free things to do in Ios island include wandering around the pretty harbor and main town (Chora). Plan to visit churches and chapels scattered across the island including the Church of Agia Irini. Also check out the site of Homer’s Tomb which can be reached from the town of Plakotos.

Other cheap attractions include the Bronze Age settlement of Skarkos and the Archaeological Museum which has entrance prices of just $4 each.

Travelers can find dorm beds in some of Ios’ best hostels for 15-20 per night. Or, if you’re traveling as a couple on the cheap, you can find a budget hotel room or Airbnb for less than between 25-50 a night.

If you’re really looking to save money on your cheap island vacation, try traveling outside of peak season. And book your accommodation and ferry tickets in advance. Buy your own food and drink to enjoy in the comfort of your apartment for some of your meals.

11. Tenerife, Canary Islands (a beautiful and cheap island vacation)

Tenerife in the Canary Islands is the ideal island destination for a cheap vacation. Tenerife has year-round sunshine and many affordable accommodation options from 2* to 5* most of which offer an all-inclusive package which can be great value for money.

If you don’t stay all-inclusive then options for eating out are extensive. You can find restaurants to suit any taste from traditional Spanish to Italian, Chinese and English cuisine.

Many local restaurants offer a menu del dia which is excellent value for money for 3 courses. It often includes tasty local dishes like tapas and paella, some even include a free glass of wine.

Tenerife has many exciting things to do and it’s not just about visiting the beautiful beaches which have both yellow and black sand. You can find tours for whale watching, jeep tours of Mount Teide, snorkeling with turtles or even scuba diving at one of the many  dive sites on Tenerife .

The best way to explore the island is to rent a car from as little as 7 euro per day . Taxis can get very expensive, so this will also give you chance to explore the island thoroughly. Be sure to drive up through the quaint little villages on the mountain and explore all the beautiful beaches and towns around the coast.

12. Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is a hidden Portuguese gem located in the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a warm climate all year long which makes it the perfect place to visit during the off peak season. The Portuguese archipelago is quite often compared to Hawaii.

It’s a destination for nature lovers with hundreds of hiking trails and walks spread across the island. If you love wild beachy landscapes, you have to go to the Eastern Peninsula of São Lourenço. You can hike there for a few hours and enjoy the incredible cliffs and volcanic landscapes.

Funchal, the capital of the island also offers exciting activities. You can visit the botanic garden, enjoy a panoramic view of the city with the cable car or go sledding with the traditional toboggan ride.

This destination is perfect if you travel on a tight budget as everything is very affordable. You can easily eat for cheap on so many restaurants, with tasty local seafood and the Madeira wine you definitely have to try. And the Portuguese food is delicious!

You can expect to pay about $50 per person per day for a one week trip . And that includes great accommodation, meals and the car rental . This is one of the cheapest island vacations on the list. It’s highly recommended for family holidays, hiker lovers or even for a romantic trip with your love one.

13. Sifnos, Greece (one of the cheapest island vacations in Europe)

One of the best islands to visit in Europe is the small island of Sifnos, Greece . This hidden gem in the Cyclades island group has a laid back beach vibe that you notice as soon as you arrive.

It’s full of soft sand beaches, whitewashed buildings, hiking trails, authentic restaurants and the perfect amount of island nightlife . Sifnos is also famous in Greece for its pottery and hand-crafted souvenirs. You can hunt for the best items at affordable boutiques and shops all over the island. 

Sifnos is easily reached by ferry from Athens or other island routes. The main ferry is in the port of Kamares, which is also an ideal place to stay. There you’ll find Kamares beach surrounded by rocky hills with whitewashed houses.

It’s circled with beach bars and cafes that you can enjoy from a rented beach chair with drink service. Kamares is a short trip to other lovely waterfront destinations like Vathy Beach. It’s more remote and local with nearby tavernas along the gorgeous protected cove.

Faros Beach is one of the most authentic beaches on the island. It’s located adjacent to a small fishing village with a long stretch of sandy coastline. The picturesque village is one of the most serene places on Sifnos island with incredible views.

Sifnos is an affordable alternative to some of the other Greek islands. It’s got some of the best soft sand beaches in Greece and so much to do and see while you’re there. It’s a cheap island vacation in Europe, and one you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Know for it’s luxurious – and dirt cheap – accommodations, Asia is the perfect place to book an island vacations for cheap. Depending on your location, getting there can be expensive. Be sure to check out these budget travel tips for finding cheap flights.

14. Belitung Island, Indonesia

Belitung Island is not a famous beach destination in Southeast Asia like Bali, Lombok, or Phuket, but that doesn’t mean its breathtaking natural landscape is inferior to others. If you’re looking for a cheap island vacation, you should add Belitung Island in Indonesia to your list.

Belitung is one of the many perfect islands you must visit in Indonesia . The island is surrounded by more than 100 islands decorated with perfect soft-white sand, granite rocks, and heavenly scenery that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s a perfect place to laze on the beach.

So after arriving in Belitung, what can you do to utilize your great escape here? If you’re only going for a short visit, here are some of the many tourist attractions to check out in Belitong , as the locals pronounce it.

There’s the most famous little island called  Pulau Lengkuas . You can see the historic lighthouse that was built by the Dutch colonial in 1882. Climb up the 50-meter tall tower, although the highest level you are allowed on is the third floor, you’ll be able to enjoy the most perfect view there.  Pulau Lengkuas  is also a must-visit place if you enjoy snorkeling.

Not all of the tourist attractions in Belitung are beaches. You can also visit Andrea Hirata Museum, the colorful literary museum. It’s a montage to Andrea Hirata, who introduced the island with his best-selling novel, and also  Danau Kaolin , a man-made lake as a result of kaolin mining activity.

15. Koh Chang, Thailand (one of Asia’s best island vacations for cheap)

Nowhere does beaches quite like Thailand, and Koh Chang is one of the best islands to visit in the country. It is often overshadowed by other islands and doesn’t make it into everybody’s Thailand itinerary , but that makes it not too touristy and the beach is unspoiled. It’s the perfect destination for those wanting a relaxing beach break, but also keen for a little bit of adventure!

Lonely Beach is the main backpacker area of the island. It’s still relatively chilled. There’s no full moon beach parties here, but if you are looking for some bars with a bit of atmosphere, it’s a fun place to visit.

Other things to do in Koh Chang include diving, hiking to waterfalls, touring around the island (with a guide or by motorbike!), and taking a Thai cooking class. 

Koh Chang is also one of the best cheap island vacations in Thailand . There’s less tourism here than elsewhere in the country.

From Bangkok, you can take a cheap bus to Trat and then a boat to Koh Chang. I’d also recommend avoiding the peak season (October to February) if you’re looking to stay in Koh Chang on a budget.

16. Boracay, Philippines

Boracay has won the title of the best beach in the world on more than one occasion. It’s probably the best known of the over 7000 islands that make up the Philippines.

A 4-kilometer stretch of white sand down one side of the island makes up White Beach. It’s the tourist hub of the island and the water is incredibly blue! The beach is lined with hotels, stores and restaurants and people selling their wares during the day. At night the sand transforms into pop-up bars with bean bags on the beach looking out over the water while performers busk for the coin that supports them.

From White Beach you can organize a variety of water activities including cruises, glass bottom boats, diving and island tours. Or you can relax under the palm trees on the sand. Make sure you take a walk to the top of White Beach at sunset to catch the exceptional  Boracay sunset !

For visitors from the West, Boracay is an incredibly cheap island getaway. It’s possible to spend less than $2,000 on a couple of weeks including all the flights, accommodation, food and activities.  

During happy hour you can enjoy 2 cocktails for under $5, and have a full body one-hour massage with the waves as a backdrop for under $15. The people are incredibly friendly, but as with any poorer country it is wise to keep valuables secured. Check out the D’Talipapa for fresh seafood straight from the fishermen, and choose your cooking style from the restaurants there.

17. Hiriketiya Beach, Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for soft sand beaches with gentle waves and warm seas all the while not breaking your budget, you’re looking for Sri Lanka. This tiny teardrop-shaped island in South Asia is often overlooked by beach-goers who instead flock to the overcrowded islands of Thailand and Bali.

But when it comes to picking the best beach in Sri Lanka  it comes down to personal preference. The entire southern coast of the country is packed with lovely stretches of sand. If you enjoy a cheap surf spot you might like Hiriketiya Beach.

As one of the cheapest island vacations on this list, the secret to traveling Sri Lanka on a budget is taking advantage of their massive public bus system. Oh, and staying in the cheap guesthouse scattered all over the country. Buses cost as little as $0.25 a ride (they pick you up anywhere along the road). You can score comfortable guesthouses for as little as $6 a night.

As for activities, you don’t need anything except a towel, a book, or maybe a surfboard rental ($3 for an hour). If you’re looking for a more active beach day, you can also rent snorkel gear to spot sea turtles, stingrays, and coral reefs far beneath you.

18. Koh Lipe, Thailand

Koh Lipe is a beautiful island in southern Thailand. With its picturesque beaches and unbelievably turquoise water, you could almost believe that you have actually landed in the Maldives. In contrast to travel destinations such as the Maldives, you can easily visit the island in  Thailand on a budget .

Especially during the rainy season, there are some huts right on the beach for little money. But even during the high season, an overnight stay here costs much less than in many other exotic beach destinations.

Koh Lipe is a relatively quiet island. So if you are looking for nightlife and full-moon parties, Koh Lipe might probably not be the right destination in Thailand for you. On the contrary, Koh Lipe is excellent for everyone who wants to spend a relaxing vacation on paradisiacal beaches. Koh Lipe is also a great fit as a honeymoon destination.

There are great opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, or even diving for those who are a little more active. There are also various tours on offer that you can take part in.

If you don’t want to spend money on tours, it’s worth bringing your own snorkel gear and swimming around the island. You’ll be able to discover a lot of exotic fish in the crystal clear water.

19. Bohol, Philippines (one of the best island vacations for cheap in Southeast Asia)

Bohol is an island located in the Central Visayas region in the Philippines. While there are some better known destinations nearby like Boracay and Cebu, Bohol is equally as stunning while being a bit quieter and cheaper for tourists. 

There’s a long list of activities that are unique to Bohol and are either free or inexpensive. The best known are the: 

• Tarsier Sanctuary (less than $2)
• Chocolate Hills (free)
• Hinagdanan Cave ($1)

Closer to the water there are also island hopping trips, snorkeling, dolphin watching, and some great beaches in every corner of the island.  

The bus network will get you to all of these places. And while this will cost you less than $1 per trip, if the bus is full you may end up on the roof dodging tree branches….. not very safe, but it’s fun! Or you can negotiate with a taxi driver to just take you around for the day. 

There’s a cluster of hotels, beaches and farms hidden away on a tiny adjacent (Panglao) Island just near Bohol airport. I’ve stayed at the Amarela Resort multiple times and while it’s a 4 star hotel Bohol prices are generally cheap and it’s worth treating yourself.

The hotel is quiet and relaxing, and has plenty of outdoor space. It opens up onto a beautiful white beach which is almost deserted most of the tim!. 

Nearby you also have the Bohol Bee Farm which has some amazing food and honey products on sale. Plus a restaurant that overlooks the water looking back towards Amarela that is again very affordable.

20. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

A tropical vacation is always the need of the hour. We all love whisking away to exotic islands with the bluest blue waters and a laid back yet fun island life. To top it off, a tropical paradise that doesn’t break the bank truly makes up for the perfect island escape.

One such affordable island getaway is jetting off to this place called Gili Trawangan. It sits on the northwest coast of Lombok in Indonesia. While here, your perfect  Gili Trawangan itinerary  must include swimming in clear waters of the Indian Ocean, lying on the beaches with the view of a volcanic mountain in the distance and diving in to swim with turtles .

21. southport, tasmania.

The island of Tasmania has dozens of gorgeous beaches dotted around its coastline. Plenty are famous, like Boathouse Beach or Wineglass Bay, but when you ask a local where their favourite is for a  Tasmania road trip  then Southport Beach will be right at the top of the list!

It’s a real stunner, with soft, white sand stretching into the distance. Calm, cool waters are perfect for stand-up paddling and swimming. Families love the location because the water is so shallow and sheltered it’s perfect for kids to get their first taste of beach life.

It isn’t all about the beaches either, with beautiful caves located just 15 minutes away, immersive bushwalks through the rainforest, and even gem-fossicking in nearby Lune River.

Southport itself is a sleepy little ‘shack town’ where locals and visitors go to escape the rat race, unwind, and recharge. Forget luxury hotels and expensive high rises… Airbnbs are plentiful, with some so close to the water’s edge you can even go fishing from your front balcony! It’s the perfect way to do an island vacation for cheap!

Or for an even more cost-effective getaway you’ll love setting your tent or campervan up on the lush green grass of the Southport Hotel and Caravan Park. Whichever is your preference, make the most of off-season pricing. Plan your visit for autumn or spring when the weather is still great, but prices aren’t quite as high as at summer’s peak.

Dining options are limited to the Southport Hotel (great Aussie pub fare!) and self-catering – but that’s part of the charm of this quiet beachside town. No stress, no car horns, and plenty of relaxation at your own pace. And if you really need to try something new then you can always drive 20 minutes up the road to Dover where you’ll find plenty more options.

It’s time to debunk the misconception that tropical island destinations are only for mega-luxurious vacations that cost an arm and a leg. In many parts of the world, it’s actually more affordable to stay on a beautiful island as opposed to a big, bustling city. Sure, it might take a bit of out-of-the-box thinking to find places like this — or to find ways to save money in less budget-friendly destinations — but that’s what lists like these are for. After all, don’t we all deserve to disconnect from the world on a lush tropical island once in a while?

From North America all the way to the Southeast tip of Africa, these are the cheapest tropical islands to visit — and some may surprise you!

1. big island of hawai’i, usa : $183/day.

I know what you’re thinking: Hawai’i?! Cheap?! But hear me out. You might be surprised at how budget-friendly visiting Hawai’i can be, especially if you stay on the Big Island. Even if $183 a day sounds pricey, there are plenty of ways to save money when traveling to Hawai’i .

For starters, traveling to the Big Island during low season (February to April) will save you big bucks on accommodation and flights. Lower your costs even more by camping, which will only put you out $21/night; you can make a reservation here . You can also find lots of budget-friendly options on Airbnb, like this neat yurt for $136/night .

Making the most out of the incredible scenery is easy to do on the cheap, as many of the Big Island’s best things to do are free or very affordable. Take Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historic Park, for example. It has fee-free days, and regular admission ranges from $10 to $20, depending on if you need parking.

• Meals: $30-50/day, if you cook breakfast on your own and have two meals out.
• Accommodation: $21-140/day, the cheapest option being camping.
• Transportation: $0/day if you rely on the free public bus , $44/day for the cheapest car rental.
• SIM card with data: $0/day if you already have an American SIM card.

2. The Bahamas : $100/day

With 700 islands and over 2,400 cays, it’s fair to say that there’s something for everyone in the Bahamas. Whether you’re planning to check out the vibrant city of Nassau or looking for a more laid-back spot like Staniel Cay , it’s totally doable to visit on a tight budget.

While you’re planning your trip, you might notice that popular excursions like swimming with pigs and nurse sharks can be pricey. A more affordable alternative could be kayaking through the Exuma Cays on your own and seeing the area’s wildlife that way. You can rent a kayak with Out Island Explorers for just $50 for the whole day. Another awesome excursion is visiting Lucayan National Park, which costs just $5 for admission. Saving money on accommodation might seem like an impossible task, considering the abundance of luxury hotels throughout the islands. However, a little bit of creativity and an open mind can go a long way here. For example, this apartment is available for only $59/night , and can ask your host about cheap attractions and restaurants.

• Meals: $25-35/day, and take advantage of the generous helpings of seafood at fish fries and the food stalls at the Port Lucaya Marketplace.
• Accommodation: $60-75/night; this unique tiny house is a cheap option at just $65/night .
• Transportation: $5-20/day, if you just stick to one island and use the private minibuses (aka jitneys) or taxis to get around. Ferries and flights to other islands will set your budget back drastically, and renting a car is also expensive in the Bahamas (over $60/day).
• SIM card with data: $3/day, with SIM cards for around $15 that are already loaded with plenty of data.

3. Puerto Rico, USA : $77/day

This Caribbean island is a paradise that won’t break the bank. Like many destinations in Latin America, it’s a breeze finding ways to save money in Puerto Rico, including avoiding big seaside hotels. You can find hostels and affordable Airbnbs easily in San Juan.

If you want to check out other places on the island, like El Yunque National Forest or tiny islands like Isla Culebra, you can easily catch a bus or ferry for cheap. In fact, the ferry from Ceiba to Isla Culebra is only $2.25. You can also book an excursion to El Yunque for as little as $45 , which includes transportation to and from San Juan.

Puerto Ricans are extremely hospitable and generous. You won’t have to pay big bucks for a filling lunch, and chances are you’ll even have leftovers. For an affordable meal, check out one of the many chinchorros (small food stalls) in San Juan. You can find these on busy streets and markets; meals there typically cost $4-8.

• Meals: $20-30/day, if you stay somewhere with free breakfast and go out for lunch and dinner.
• Accommodation: $18-30/night, with the cheapest hostels offering dorm beds for around $21 per night and some Airbnbs as low as $53/night for a studio .
• Transportation: $15-40/day, if you use public transportation to get around San Juan or to other cities. Renting a car in Puerto Rico may be as cheap as $40/day.
• SIM card with data: If you’re from the US, you won’t need a special SIM card for Puerto Rico.

4. Isla Holbox, Mexico : $75/day

Isla Holbox never ceases to enchant me, and I would be lying if I said I was satisfied with visiting just one time. This is one of the many places I’ve gone back to in Mexico because of how beautiful and affordable it is.

Holbox is a small island off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, with calm shores and even a bioluminescent lagoon. There are no cars there (except for the occasional maintenance vehicle); locals get around via golf cart or motorcycle.

The island has become more popular in recent years and thus less affordable than it used to be, which is unfortunately normal for a lot of places in Mexico. However, it still remains quite accessible compared to other places like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, which are nearby. In Holbox, you can still find inexpensive dorm beds, places to camp, and even some very affordable Airbnbs. The food scene is also relatively cheap, with taco stands and small beach shacks selling ceviche here and there for about $5 a meal. The restaurants and cafés are still more expensive than other places in Mexico, but you can expect to pay $10-15 for lunch or dinner.

• Accommodation: $16-28/night, for a dorm bed or glamping on the beach .
• Transportation: $0/day, as the island is so small you can easily walk anywhere you need to go. However, you’ll have to factor in transportation to the island from Cancún. The bus from Cancún to the ferry port in Chiquilá costs around $20 each way. The ferry to Isla Holbox costs about $11 each way. • SIM card with data: Telcel is the biggest provider; you can buy a SIM card for 150 pesos ($7.50 USD) and spend as little as 100 pesos ($5 USD) for up to two weeks of data.

5. Dominican Republic : $85/day

There’s so much more to the Dominican Republic than the flashy resorts in Punta Cana. This vibrant Caribbean island nation has the perfect balance of laid-back beach vibes and lively Latin culture. The locals are warm and hospitable, always willing to lend a hand if you need directions or a restaurant recommendation for a cheap lunch. Not only that but the country is one of the cheapest destinations in Latin America if you play your cards right.

First, avoid Punta Cana if you want to save money in the DR. Opt for keeping your base in Santo Domingo, or even in a smaller town like Las Terrenas if you want a more authentic experience. Especially in the historic center of Santo Domingo, touristy restaurants might shock you with how expensive they are. Instead, try heading down a side street to find a more local joint for a home-cooked meal. Dominican food is incredibly rich and delicious, so you won’t be disappointed.

Transportation from Santo Domingo to other parts of the island can be really cheap if you don’t mind bopping around like the locals do. You can expect to pay around $10 for a bus ticket from the capital to Punta Cana, for example. These buses are cheap, so don’t expect a five-star experience — prepare for a potentially cramped ride.

The Dominican Republic has gorgeous beaches, thick jungles, and quaint small towns where you’ll get a taste for authentic island life. This one is for the adventurous traveler, for sure.

• Meals: $20-30/day, by sticking to local favorites and avoiding tourist traps.
• Accommodation: $20-$40/night, with hostels like Island Life Hostel as low as $20 for a dorm bed and free breakfast. Airbnbs like this beautiful off-the-beaten-path bungalow are around $39/night .
• Transportation: $10/day, using public transportation; $50/day if you rent a car.
• SIM card with data: $1-2/day, for a prepaid SIM card (that you can buy at the airport) with 28 days of data; it costs about $12 total.

South America

6. galápagos islands, ecuador : $115/day.

This one might surprise you. Long thought of as a destination only suited for luxury travelers on fancy cruise ships, the Galápagos have earned a reputation for being a bougie place to visit. This certainly isn’t the case, however. This ecological treasure trove can actually be very accessible to travelers on a budget, which is great news if the Galápagos have been on your bucket list for a while.

Although there are plenty of expensive hotels there, there are also a few budget options that are comfortable. If you stay on Isabela, for example, you’ll find some of the cheapest accommodation in the islands, at around $18/night.

There are plenty of pricey excursions and diving opportunities in the Galápagos, but there are also enough activities that are completely free to keep you busy. You can swim in the lava-carved pools of Las Grietas, hang out on Tortuga Bay on Santa Cruz , hike to the Mirador Cerro Tijeretas on San Cristóbal , or bike the Wall of Tears on Isabela .

• Accommodation: $18-60/night, with basic rooms on Airbnb starting at $20/night, or hotels like Dolphin House that have great budget options.
• Transportation: $30/day, if you plan to visit different islands via ferry.
• SIM card with data: $2/day; you should grab a SIM card in mainland Ecuador for about $5, loading it with data as you go.

7. Islas Ballestas, Peru : $56/day

Many backpackers moving through South America tend to visit the Islas Ballestas, known as “the poor man’s Galápagos,” because of how much more economical they are in comparison. But just like the Galápagos, this chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean is teeming with wildlife, from migratory birds to seals and even penguins.

You can’t actually stay on the Ballestas because they’re uninhabited, but this is a big plus for many adventurous travelers who want to see unspoiled nature at its best. You can stay in the coastal town of Paracas instead, which has plenty of cheap accommodation. There are tours to the islands for as little as $12, which is an absolute steal!

• Meals: $20-30/day, with delicious ceviche plates around $7 that make a perfect beachside lunch.
• Accommodation: $8-23/night, with dorm beds for as little as $8 and private rooms in Airbnbs for around $23/night .
• Transportation: $12-20/day, for transportation to different parts of the islands via boat.
• SIM card with data: $1-2/day, as SIM cards in Peru cost about $1.50 and you can load data as you go. You can also opt for an international eSIM so you can roam on the go.

Although no islands in Europe are technically in the tropics, these have warm weather year-round, making them feel in many ways like tropical islands.

8. Poros, Greece : $160/day

Greece is not only one of the best places in the world to island-hop but also one of the most affordable. Poros is one of the more low-key Greek islands, and also one of the cheapest. It has the pristine white buildings with blue domes and abundant bougainvillea flowers that you expect to see here, with a vibrant gastronomical scene that will make you want to eat your way through the whole island.

Poros is only a one-hour ferry ride from Athens, so you won’t need to invest too much in transportation costs like you would if you were going to another island further away from the Athens airport. Plus, accommodations are cheap there; you can rent an entire residential home for $58 a night . To top it all off, a full three-course meal will only cost you about $15.

Compared to places like Santorini , which are more expensive and crowded, Poros gives you the opportunity to enjoy everything that the Greek islands have to offer without breaking the bank.

• Meals: $20-30/day, if you make breakfast yourself and spend $10-15 on lunch and dinner.
• Accommodation: $60-140/night; there are great options on Airbnb and hotels like Poros Hotel (rooms at just $130/night) .
• Transportation: $12-20/day, for taxis to places like Russian Bay or to rent a scooter or ATV to explore the island.
• SIM card with data: $3/day, for a SIM from Vodafone that costs around $6 plus data.

9. Malta : $100/day

Cities with hilly cobblestone streets and hues of yellow painted on antique buildings contrast with turquoise seas and green mossy cliffs in Malta. Sure, the scenes here are distinct from the tropical islands of the Caribbean, but this European island destination is just as dreamy.

Maltese culture is a fascinating result of centuries of North African and European invasions and control, giving the nation its modern-day uniqueness. Here, you’ll find domes reminiscent of Middle Eastern mosques next to gothic-style buildings, and nearly every street bursts with color. And the best thing is that visiting Malta is incredibly affordable, especially in comparison with other destinations in Europe.

Here you can grab a tasty ricotta-filled pastizz for $1, take a city bus from one end of Valletta to the other for $2, and stay in a hostel for around $28 a night. During the summertime, prices go up , so plan to visit in the late spring or fall for the best shot at saving money.

• Meals: $25-45/day, if you stick to a cheap breakfast and cafés for lunch and dinner.
• Accommodation: $28-31/night, with dorm beds as little as $28/night or an entire studio apartment for $45/night . Airbnb is the better option, as shared dorms are only slightly cheaper than a private room in a house.
• Transportation: $2-28/day: if you take the bus, it’s about $2 for a two-hour ticket to go anywhere. Scooter rentals can be as low as $28/day if you avoid the summertime and book in advance.
• SIM card with data: $3/day, with a prepaid SIM card for around $10, plus data.

10. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain: $82/day

The Canaries are sunny, mountainous, and lush, with a brilliant mix of Spanish, African, and Arab culture that makes it a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands of Spain, which are off the coast of West Africa. The island itself is made from a volcano called Mt. Teide, which is the tallest peak in Spain.

Here you’ll find extremely cheap accommodation, with Airbnbs starting at around $15/night, a price that is nearly impossible to find on the Spanish mainland. Tenerife also has free activities galore, like visiting Parque Natural del Teide, which has a shockingly similar geology to that of Mars. You can also visit La Laguna and the Museo de Historia y Antropología for free on Fridays and Saturdays or see giant basalt rock formations at Acantilados de los Gigantes.

With such an eclectic mix of cultures, you can expect the food here to be incredible. Even better, it’s super cheap, with two-course meals costing around $12. Eat, drink, and hang out on the beach to your heart’s content without overspending.

• Meals : $20-30/day, with fried fish plates as cheap as $7 and famous papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled potatoes with dips) for $3.
• Accommodation: $24-50/night. I found this cozy room for just $24/night .
• Transportation: $5/day, if you use the buses (called guaguas ) to get around the island. It will cost around $30/day to rent a car, with prices being lower in the spring and fall.
• SIM card with data: $2/day, if you buy a $12 SIM card that includes 121GB of data from Movistar.

11. Koh Chang, Thailand : $33/day

The lush green mountain jungles paired with the soft blue water below make it no surprise that Koh Chang is such a special place for so many travelers. Although it’s the second largest island in Thailand, it’s a bit more off the beaten path than other tourist hot spots like Koh Phi Phi and Ko Samui, but has become more popular in recent years.

Thailand is known as one of the cheaper destinations, so it’s no wonder why the country attracts so many backpackers on a shoestring budget. I mean, I once stayed in hostel in Chiang Mai for $3/night, which blew my mind. Koh Chang is no exception and has a great selection of affordable Airbnbs and hostels. You might even be able to find a cheap overwater bungalow here .

Attractions are also affordable on the island, and there’s plenty of nature to explore. You can easily get to the Klong Plu waterfall via taxi or motorbike, or visit the Bang Bao floating village for the day. • Transportation: $3-10/day, if you stick to local transportation to get around. You could also rent a scooter for as low as $10/day.

12. Nusa Islands, Indonesia : $50/day

If you’ve been dying to go to Bali but are discouraged by overtourism, go to the Nusa Islands instead. Some people even say that this is what Bali looked like 30 years ago, which is enough of a reason for me. Plus, you can easily get to the islands from Bali’s Sanur via a 30-minute boat ride.

There are three islands here that are all worth visiting: Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan, and Penida. The beaches here are pristine and the interiors of the islands feature thick jungles, mangrove forests, and waterfalls. Accommodations in Indonesia are famously cheap, and the Nusa Islands are no exception. Considering you can have a gorgeous jungle bungalow for just $37/night , you can imagine why so many people never want to leave.

• Meals: $10-20/day, if you stick to traditional Indonesian delights like Nasi Campur (a mixed rice plate) which costs only about $1, balanced with other more expensive meals.

If you are a snorkeling or diving enthusiast, Coron Island might already be on your bucket list for how popular it is. Like many well-known places, Coron Island does get crowded during peak season (January-March). Avoid the higher prices and hoards of tourists simply by avoiding a visit during this time.

You can find dirt-cheap accommodations in Coron Town, often the jumping-off point for island-hopping around Coron Island , as well as exploring other parts of the island itself. It’s also quite affordable to eat here if you balance going to restaurants with trying street food delicacies like adobo and seafood platters.

• Meals: $20-30/day, if you have a light breakfast and do either lunch or dinner at a street food stall.
• Accommodation: $10-30/night, as Dayon Hostel’s dorm beds start around $10 ; Airbnbs are around $35/night, like this two-person room with a bunk bed .
• Transportation: $10-50/day, if you do any kind of island-hopping tours.
• SIM card with data: $1-2/day, if you buy a prepaid SIM for about $2 and load data as you go.

14. Zanzibar, Tanzania: $60/day

Many travelers only dream of visiting this African island paradise. It’s not only a gorgeous, beachy haven, it’s also incredibly rich in history and culture. Known as “the spice island,” Zanzibar gets its fame as a star producer of spices like nutmeg, vanilla, and so much more.

Zanzibar’s cuisine is bursting with flavor and you’ll be able to try some of the island’s best street food at the Foradhani Gardens night market, where you can get a meal for just a couple dollars.

Zanzibar isn’t one of the cheapest places to visit in Africa, but it’s still very affordable in comparison to other tropical islands. Especially if you stay in Stone Town and avoid the big beach hotels in Nungwi and Kendwa, you’ll find that Zanzibar is very affordable for backpackers even. If you do want to stay near the beach, you won’t have to shell out too much. Beachside bungalows are as low as $22/night on Airbnb, so why not spend a couple days with your feet in the sand?

• Meals: $10-15/day, sticking to street food and beachside seafood shacks for affordable and filling meals.
• Accommodation: $25-40/night, if you opt to stay in Stone Town try this private room for $30/night .
• Transportation: $7-12/day, if you use Zanzibus shuttles to get between different cities.
• SIM card with data: $1-2/day, with a Vodacom SIM card plus data.

15. Ilha de Bazaruto, Mozambique: $50/day

This sandy archipelago off the coast of southern Mozambique is virtually unknown to most travelers unless they’ve been to southeastern Africa.

So, here’s the kicker: You can’t actually stay on Bazaruto, as the population there is only about 4,000 and there are no hotels, hostels, or guesthouses. To visit, you can stay in Vilanculos and take a boat over for around $10 each way. Vilanculos is a sleepy beach town known for its shallow turquoise waters that go on for miles.

Bazaruto has five islands, actually: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue. You’ll find brilliant expanses of white-sand dunes as far as the eye can see, with tons of marine life. I tend to find that traveling on the cheap is more adventurous and down-to-earth, even if I’m not super strapped for cash. Often, looking for more rugged accommodation has led me to meeting interesting people and traveling more like a local, which I enjoy. After all, if you really want to get to know a place, as Anthony Bourdain’s advised, “Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them — wherever you go.”

I did not realize how you can enjoy such incredible islands for a reasonable price. Malta, Poros, and the Canaries are geographically outside of tropical latitudes however to be a “tropical Island” or “tropical island paradise” you just have to be “tropical”-like according to many definitions, so even technically, you are fine to include them in a “tropical island” post. Tropical latitudes are not necessary required! In fact, technically, you can have islands in the tropical latitudes and they are desert islands!! 🙂 Either way, you all have made me realize the beauty of the Greek isles and now am eager to visit there. Either way, I now know that I can afford to go to all of these amazing places. Now I just need to find the time :). Another great article!

The list includes some classic favorites like Jamaica and St. Thomas , as well as new destinations you have yet to discover. Read on to learn about the most affordable Caribbean destinations to fly to this year and next.

Puerto Rico

One of the cheapest Caribbean destinations to visit through next year is the sunny capital city of Puerto Rico , San Juan. This low-cost tropical paradise is known for its colonial architecture, vibrant nightlife and nearby sugar-sand beaches that make it a popular vacation spot. Best of all, the cheapest flights average around $300 from the U.S. during July and November of 2023, all the way into February 2024. More expensive than its busier sister airport in San Juan but still affordable enough to make the ranking, Aguadilla has a smaller airport in Puerto Rico that welcomes inexpensive flights from Chicago , Miami and New York City . This destination may be ideal if you want to lay back and relax or stay busy with activities. After all, Aguadilla is known for its surfing and diving, as well as its rocky beaches and oceanfront scenery. Flight deals to quieter Aguadilla for the same time period average $415 and are often a viable alternative to flying into San Juan, especially if you're staying in one of the intimate boutique hotels nearby.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a true Caribbean playground, filled to the brim with all-inclusive resorts, kid-friendly attractions and, of course, turquoise seas. Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo was found to be the second-cheapest Caribbean airport to fly into overall, with an average flight price of $367 round trip (leaving you with plenty to spend on the ground).

Punta Cana is another popular destination in the Dominican Republic for families, couples and groups of friends since nearly all the all-inclusive resort brands are found there. You can find package deals that bundle in nonstop flights from many U.S. cities, which makes it easier to save big. This destination is also known for its high-energy adventure activities, including zip lining, ATV rides, snorkeling and more. The average flight cost here works out to $474 round trip through late 2023 and early 2024, with cheap flights coming mostly from Miami and New York.

From the iconic pink towers of The Royal at Atlantis to the equally iconic pink sands of Harbour Island, the Bahamas are a colorful Caribbean destination. The lively capital of Nassau hosts the Lynden Pindling International Airport and is a hub for Bahamasair. While the average flight to Nassau costs as little as $409 on average, you can expect to pay even less if you're departing from Miami, Florida, where you can nab a flight from around $270 if you catch a sale.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman is a tropical paradise known for its family-friendly atmosphere and incredible beaches. In fact, this island is home to Seven Mile Beach, which is frequently rated as one of the best white sand beaches in the world . While accommodations and food and drink in this Cayman Islands destination aren't cheap, you may be able to find flights to this island for a surprisingly low price. The U.S. News analysis found that the average price for U.S. flight deals to Grand Cayman works out to $411, but flights from Miami cost an average of just $312.

Given the bulk of affordable flight options from New York City and Miami, you may be able to score airfare for less than $400 round trip, leaving plenty of extra dough for zip lining in the rainforest, snorkeling in Magens Bay or shopping in the duty-free shops of Charlotte Amalie.

Finally, you can consider the Dutch island of Curaçao , a neighbor of both Aruba and Bonaire, if you are looking for inexpensive flight deals. The Dominican Republic offers good value if you look to the off-season or opt for slightly more off-the-beaten-path towns, rather than the main resort destinations.

High season in the Dominican Republic isn't always cheap, but the months of April , May, and June offer the best of two worlds : mostly sunny days and lots of special discounts on accommodations and flights – with prices reduced as much as 50 percent from the high-season rates.

June is the start of the rainy and hurricane season, but storms are rare during this month, so it's a great month to explore for less. If you happen to be a kiteboarder, this is the best month for kiting in places like Cabarete , and also one of the best months for cheap accommodation.

Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are the two main destinations for packaged vacations. They are known for luxury resorts and pricey accommodations, but in many cases, all-inclusive resorts can actually save you money , as eating out will get expensive and packages that include airfare can save you money on flights. If you are looking for a resort vacation, the Dominican Republic has some of the most reasonably priced all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean.

Things get cheaper when you head to smaller towns and off-the-beaten-track destinations, away from the crowds of tourists, to places such as Samana, Las Terrenas, and Cabarete. Here, you'll still find beautiful beaches but also hotels, inns, and small resorts which can usually be found at a reasonable price if you are not in the peak of high season. A favorite tropical destination for worldwide visitors, Bali can be a bargain if you pick your travel times right or if you are comfortable with basic accommodations.

As a general rule, destinations in the southern part of the island are more expensive. This includes Kuta, Ubud, and Seminyak, where everything costs double that in destinations in the central hills or up north. Even here, though, visiting in the off-season (March to May) will still save you a considerable amount of money. Food is a bargain and dining out is a pleasure, without an accompanying big bill at the end of the meal.

March and April can be a little rainy but are still pleasant times to visit. May offers sun and low humidity. The rainy season, which lasts from October to April, offers great deals on airfares and accommodations, and you'll still see plenty of sunshine on most days.

One of the advantages of visiting Bali outside of the dry season is that the famous rice terraces , like the Tegallalong Rice Terrace, are green and at their most scenic. Other attractions, like the Monkey Forest or Pura Tanah Lot, can be visited at any time of year.

All beaches in Bali are public and free, but the island also offers breathtaking mountains for hiking, and lots of temples and palaces, none of which charge an entry fee.

While December to March sees high prices in this area of Mexico, the rest of the year offers much better rates and plenty of ways to save money. Hurricane season lasts from July to October in Cozumel – but until September, this usually just means occasional rains. July and August offer very low prices on flights and accommodation in exchange for some cloudy skies here and there.

For better weather and equally great prices, visit between late March and June. Temperatures can fluctuate but you'll get plenty of sunny days and some great deals plus much smaller crowds.

Cozumel beaches are free all year long, so you can spend entire days enjoying the sun and spend almost nothing. If you prefer the comfort of a pool, you can get a day pass at one of the luxury local resorts - which will allow you full use of their pool and sun chairs without the cost of sleeping there.

The Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park is the world's second-largest coral reef system , perfect for some diving at very affordable prices.

For a quick bite or snacks on the go, nothing beats a local mercado - little markets that appear unannounced in plazas, where you can get not only great souvenirs and local art but also traditional fare, such as tamales and quesadillas, for very little money.

June to November is the off-peak season in this small archipelagic province in the Philippines. It's also monsoon season, but don't let that scare you – even during the rainy season, it doesn't rain every day, and rains often just come in the form of heavy but short afternoon downpours. Rains do lower temperatures a little, making it more comfortable to walk around and explore.

For the best possible weather, arrive early in the season, as the heavier storms are usually after September. Airlines and hotels offer heavy discounts during this time, with off-peak prices saving you as much as 80 percent compared to regular costs.

While rates in El Nido have risen as it has become more well-known, it still offers some budget accommodations, particularly if you are willing to stay a block or two off the water. Lesser known destinations, like those closer to Puerto Princesa , can also offer good value. You can find deals in Sabang , which has a beautiful stretch of beach and is located near the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

All beaches are free to access in Palawan, and visitors can also try other free or very inexpensive attractions, including visiting the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, exploring the Tabon Caves (no tour needed), and taking a dip in the natural pool at the Estrella Falls.

Flights from Manilla to destinations in Palawan are very reasonable, so the key is to find a reasonably priced airfare to Manilla.

Laos has been a backpacking haven for many years – a good indication that this tropical Southeast Asian country is a very affordable destination. Bowls of noodles, sticky rice, and other quick meals can be had from street food stalls for a couple of dollars or less, and outside of the capital, four-star hotels will cost you a third of what you would pay in Europe.

December and January see the most visitors, as the weather is dry and cool, with comfortable temperatures in the mid 20s Celsius. Arrive at any other time, and you'll see smaller crowds and even lower prices.

Luang Prabang, Laos' former capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city, is one of the most visited destinations in the country. A mix of French colonial architecture and traditional wooden houses, Luang Prabang offers a great mix of temples, including 16 th -century Wat Xieng Thong temple, with its intricate wooden carvings and mosaic patterns, and nature, all free to visit.

Mount Phu Si, just behind the city, is great for hiking and to catch the sunset. Vientiane, the capital city, is a popular foodie destination and home to a number of national monuments, a sculpture garden of giant Buddha statues, and the famous Great Stupa temple – also all free.

Costa Rica is not necessarily always a cheap tropical getaway, but arriving at the right time of year or heading to destinations that cater to independent budget travelers will definitely save a lot of money.

From May to mid-December, Costa Rica experiences what's known as the "green season" – lots of rain, thick cloud forests on green mountainsides, and budget-friendly surf breaks at a time when the big crowds mostly stay away. If you want something bigger and a little more lively, Jaco offers more of a city scene with a long beach and more nightlife.

Out on the Nicoya Peninsula Tamarindo has a mix of accommodation options that range from high-end to mid-range, but you can still find some budget hotels. This is a hot spot where many people like to base themselves. Alternatively, there are many small towns where you can find cheaper accommodation from Tamarindo in the north down to Montezuma in the south.

The Volcano Arenal , one of the most stunning destinations for hiking in Costa Rica, is perfect for some budget fun – just pay the park's entrance fee but skip the guided hikes; it's easy enough to follow the signs on your own. Most of the national parks in the country charge an entry fee, but the cost is low, and you can spend an entire day exploring, hiking volcano trails, canoeing, trying hot springs, or even horseback riding.

Although most visitors who come to Cambodia head to the ancient temples in Angkor Wat, the country also offers plenty of outdoor adventures for those looking for some tropical adventure. Lush green mountains, thick forests, and sugary-white sands all abound in Cambodia.

Cambodia's rugged and undeveloped beaches are a treat for visitors, as the crowds are smaller than in neighboring Thailand, and the resorts are cheaper. Koh Rong, the most developed island in the country, is a paradise of coral reefs and sandy coves, where you can just sit back to enjoy a mesmerizing sunset or head out for a speedboat tour over the azure waters.

Thailand has some of the cheapest tropical islands to visit , where you can have a luxurious trip no matter what your budget. Depending on where you're heading in Thailand, low season can fall in December or in August , so it's important to do some research in advance to find the cheapest months.

Koh Samui, one of Thailand's most beloved beach destinations, goes through low season between October and mid-December. October and November can be rainy in the afternoons, but December is sunnier and drier. These are great months to score deals in hotels and flights.

The nearby island of Koh Tao is a popular day trip destination for snorkeling and scuba diving – but November and December aren't good months for it because of rough seas. Instead, arrive in the shoulder season (March to May) to do this at great prices, with a good chance to see whale sharks near the coast.

If you're looking for affordable tropical honeymoon destinations , the charming little town of Hoi An is a great choice for many reasons: it's still enough off the beaten track that you won't see big crowds, it offers privacy and romance on a budget, and it's just minutes away from the turquoise waters and soft white beaches of Da Nang.

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Hoi An is a perfect fairy tale – an old trading port town with buildings dating back to the 15 th century, all to be explored on foot. Just a short drive away is Da Nang, where you'll find plenty of luxury resorts but also beach hotels that offer plenty of amenities but are very budget-friendly.

Hoi An and Da Nang low season falls between the months of September and March. This is the area's typhoon season, which usually just means short but heavy afternoon rains. Arrive during these months for incredible deals on airfare and accommodation, including vacation packages that can be 50 percent or more off the regular price.

There's much to see and do in tropical Malaysia : rainforest treks, cave exploring, and never-ending shopping in urban jungles. But vibrant Malaysia is also home to stunning diving sites, golden beaches, and crystal-clear waters.

Langkawi, an archipelago of 99 islands in the heart of the Andaman Sea, is a great island to visit if you're on a budget . It offers plenty of things to do, long stretches of beach, and very affordable accommodations year-round.

For even better savings, you can visit in rainy September or October , when prices are slashed by 50 percent everywhere. On the upside, this is the island's most lush, greenest time – perfect for visiting the seven pools of Telaga Tujuh, walking on the Sky Bridge (660 meters above sea level over the thick rainforest), and hiking through the mangrove forests of Kilim Geoforest Park – all free activities.

Aruba might sound like a destination for the rich and famous only, but this island in the southern Caribbean Sea can be great for budget beach vacations, too.

The key to keeping a trip to Aruba cheap is timing: September and October are usually very cheap months in Aruba because the island's trade winds die down, and the temperatures go up, often staying in the mid-30s Celsius, even at night. If you don't mind the sweltering heat and plan on spending most of your time in the water anyway, you can find great discounts during these months. Hotels often offer 50 percent or higher discounts on rooms, and dive boats will arrange discount packages as well.

June to August are less hot but still cheap, though the discounts aren't as deep. Aruba has plenty of well-equipped supermarkets where you can stock up on snacks to cut down on restaurant visits. Beach restaurants are especially expensive here, and small things add up (like beach towel rentals) so be prepared to cut down on unnecessary costs.

When you need a break from the beach, ride the free tourist trolley through Oranjestad town; walk on the California Dunes; and explore the Balashi ruins, the site of a former gold smelter.

If you want to score cheap deals in Mexico, the best bet is to head to destinations that are more off the beaten path. The coast of Oaxaca, for example, is still relatively untrodden, compared to other beach destinations in the country. As a result, you'll find that accommodations, dining, and things to do in Oaxaca are far more affordable.

Puerto Escondido is one of the top surf spots in Mexico , which means it has long been on the backpacker trail. You'll find plenty of boutique beachfront hotels, guesthouses, and affordable Airbnbs all along the coastline. "High season" is technically May through November because of weather and summer travels, but you won't see prices fluctuating dramatically. January through April is the dry season, and also when Puerto Escondido is at its sleepiest. This is the time to snag the rock bottom prices.

No matter the time of year, the beaches in Mexico are always free, and the beaches along the coast of Oaxaca are especially stunning. Cheap eats are also incredibly easy to come by all across the country, but in Puerto Escondido in particular, you'll find street food and hole-in-the-wall restaurants that are wallet-friendly.

Buses and colectivos make it easy to get around on a budget, as well.

Thailand has no shortage of beautiful islands, but as more and more people discover them, prices tend to go up. Koh Lanta, one of the best islands in Krabi , remains one of the most affordable islands in Thailand.

Koh Lanta is known for its long, lovely beaches, as well as the blend of cultures that have descended upon its shores for decades, from all across Asia to Europe and beyond. It's also a popular spot for diving, particularly in spots like Ko Haa and His Dang.

The island is not far from the more raucous and popular Koh Phi-Phi, but unlike its neighbor, Koh Lanta is much more tame, quiet, and serene. That said, weather is something to pay attention to when arranging a trip. The dry season is the most popular and most convenient, as many hotels and restaurants shut down in the rainy season. If you do go in the unpredictable and rainy season (April-July), you'll find that you have many of those picture-perfect beaches all to yourself.

Bali may be the most popular travel destination in Indonesia, but if you have the opportunity to visit the Gili Islands, you will not be disappointed. This chain of tiny sandbar-style islands is off the coast of Lombok, and is among the most affordable tropical islands you can visit anywhere in the world.

While the archipelago has many small islands, the ones travelers usually refer to are the three main ones: Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan. These islands are a welcome respite from the more rowdy beaches and towns of Bali. Plus, they have the powder-soft, white beaches that you may be missing over on Bali. They also happen to be a fraction of the price.

Hotels are incredibly cheap in the Gilis, with hotel rooms averaging around $20 per night. Airbnb can be extremely cheap, as well, ranging anywhere from $30 to $140 per night. Dining is incredibly affordable, too, with a lavish seafood dinner costing somewhere around $10. Of course, you can always spend more if you want to. Depending on your style of travel, you can get away with as little as $30 a day, or pay as much as $300.

Peak seasons in the Gili Islands are between July and August and December to January. Monsoon season starts in November and lasts until April. If you want fewer people and dry weather, then September to November would be the ideal time to go.

If you have yet to consider the country of Nicaragua for a cheap tropical vacation, you may want to look into the Corn Islands. Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, known for its tourist hot spots like Granada, Leon, and San Juan del Sur. But venturing a bit off the beaten path in Nicaragua can lead to some of the best cheap getaways you can find in Central America, like the Corn Islands

Zanzibar is actually an archipelago made up of three main islands including Unguja, Pemba, and Mafia. Unguja is the largest island, and so many people believe that its name is Zanzibar. The best time to visit the Tanzanian paradise is from June to October, as well as January and February. The other seasons tend to be rainier and humid.

It doesn't matter what kind of getaway you can dream up – from catching waves and trying out water sports to hiking through the rainforest to crystal-clear waterfalls – cheap tropical vacation spots can offer it all and more.

Between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, 36% of the earth's landmass has a tropical climate, providing a multitude of enticing destinations as diverse as Australia and Bali, Thailand and Colombia , and many parts of Africa . For the best affordable tropical destinations, plan where and when you want to visit and you can reap huge savings – and not just on last-minute deals. 

From white-sand shorelines in Southeast Asia to scuba diving in Central America , here are 12 cheap tropical destinations that get you access to paradise (without ever hurting your pocket).

1. Palawan, the Philippines

With 7641 islands in total, the Philippines is among the most affordable places for a tropical escape. Palawan , in the nation's southwest, has 1780 islands in its archipelago alone. The region teems with thundering waterfalls, huge caves, phenomenal snorkeling at WWII wrecks and coral reefs, and offers swimming with whale sharks in turquoise waters as well as some of the cheapest scuba diving anywhere in the world. Idyllic El Nido is the jumping-off point for island hopping aboard a bangka (motorized outrigger) to translucent lagoons and hidden beaches framed by karst limestone cliffs.

The pure waters provide a natural bounty of prawns, crab and other crustaceans and fish; look out for danggit lamayo (dried rabbitfish marinated in vinegar, crushed garlic and peppercorn). Staying in a bahay kubo (thatched bamboo shack with woven rattan walls), homestay, hostel or budget hotel are all low-cost options; you can also get good deals on resorts outside peak season (March to May), though some activities close during the June to October wet season.

2. Goa, India

Think budget travel and India will often come to mind, and Goa is a tropical potpourri of Indian and Portuguese cultures. India 's smallest state's least crowded, most pristine beaches, such as Palolem and secluded Butterfly Beach , are in the south, with glowing topaz-hued sunsets over the Arabian Sea. Water activities include kayaking, parasailing and dolphin-spotting trips.

In the dense jungle, wildlife sanctuaries such as Cotigao are home to civets, gaurs, pangolins, leopards, monkeys and giant Indian squirrels, and plantations grow cashews and spices like turmeric, pepper, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. Colorful markets sell these and other local specialties such as the cashew-based feni spirit, as well as dishes such as seafood thalis (with rice, fish curries, fried fish, pickles and flatbread) and garlicky, vinegary pork vindaloo, along with cheap clothes and handicrafts.

Guesthouses, hostels, beachside bungalows and resorts offer affordable rates. Much of Goa's beachside accommodation closes completely between May to September during the monsoon; March to April and October to November are prime times to avoid peak-season prices and crowds.

3. Bahías de Huatulco, Mexico

Forget Cabo San Lucas or Playa del Carmen City in Mexico. In southeastern Oaxaca on Mexico 's Pacific coast, Bahías de Huatulco is a unique and affordable eco escape. Its nine bays are home to 36 beaches. Santa Cruz’ emerald-green waters are just south of commercial hub La Crucecita, where you can arrange sailing and scuba excursions, and rent equipment including Jet Skis and kayaks. La Bocana is renowned for surfing and pre-Hispanic mud baths. Maguey has gorgeous white sand and snorkeling amid coral, rays and turtles. It's part of the Parque Nacional Huatulco, with awesome hiking, biking and horse riding, and abundant wildlife including black iguanas, armadillos and dwarf porcupines. Up in the mountains, you can visit waterfalls and coffee plantations.

Minimize costs by dining on super-fresh seafood and local specialties like tlayudas (corn tortillas topped with black beans, pork fat and cheese) from rustic comedores (food stalls or basic dining rooms). For accommodations, stay in rooms in private homes, simple hotels, or low-rise resorts and villas outside peak-season holidays (Christmas, New Year and around Easter) in the November to April dry season. Prices drop lowest in the wet season (May to October), though some places close in September and October.

4. Far North Queensland, Australia

World Heritage rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef in Far North Queensland , Australia. Bordered by sugarcane fields, its gateway city, Cairns , may not have a beach (compensated for by a sand-fringed artificial swimming lagoon on the reclaimed foreshore) but it's the launching pad for reef trips, such as coral cay Green Island , and hinterland excursions including nearby village Kuranda , with artsy, hippie markets beneath the rainforest canopy.

Cairns makes a great budget-friendly base in Australia with a lively hostel scene, family-friendly motels and resorts, and bargain drinking and dining options, including tropical-fruit-filled market Rusty's and high-spirited happy hours at Cairns’ bars and pubs. For a beachside stay, try Trinity Beach and Clifton Beach, both just north of the city. April to May and September to October, either side of the peak dry season, are ideal times for an affordable tropical holiday.

5. Lombok, Indonesia

Ringed by pearl-white, coral-pink and black volcanic sand beaches, Lombok is a fantastic place for an active tropical vacation. In the south , reefs, inlets and bays such as Pantai Mawi provide world-class surf breaks. Climbing through the jungle to sacred Gunung Rinjani ,  Indonesia 's second-highest volcano, is a multiday adventure. Easier treks include spectacular waterfalls such as Air Terjun Sindang Gila . Offshore, between Lombok and its famous neighbor, Bali, the Gili Islands – Gili Trawangan (‘Gili T’), a backpacker favorite for its moonlight parties; traditional Gili Meno; and laid-back Gili Air – are blissfully free from motorized transport.

On Lombok and the Gilis, you can eat cheaply and deliciously at warungs (small, simple eateries) sizzling up skewered-meat satays and grilling fish over coconut-shell charcoal. Beach huts, hostels and bungalows all offer affordable accommodations. The wet season, from October to April, is the cheapest time to go (especially if you skip the busy Christmas holidays).

6. Barbados, the Caribbean 

When it comes to the best tropical vacations on a budget, Barbados is one of the most affordable all-rounder destinations in the Caribbean . All of its sugar-sand beaches are public, even in the west along its flashy Platinum Coast. Strolling distance from its architectural treasure of a capital, Bridgetown, you can snorkel with seahorses, turtles and rays from Brownes Beach , or paddle out on an SUP or kayak.

Surfing is epic off Bathsheba on the wild Atlantic-facing east coast; Freights Bay, in the south, has gentler waves. The south and east are typically the most economical places to base up. Save money by picking up fresh produce at markets and seeking out cheap bites like cutters (filled salt-bread sandwiches) from roadside stalls and rum shops.

Reggae bands play free gigs all over the island. Next to the fish market, diving into mountains of grilled fish and sides accompanied by ice-cold beers and DJ tunes at Oistins Fish Fry is an unmissable island experience. Barbados’ location outside the hurricane belt gives you a bigger window to visit (mid-April to June and November to mid-December hit the sweet spot for great weather outside the peak Christmas-to-Easter period).

7. Vanua Levu, Fiji

Wind down to “island time” in the South Pacific on Vanua Levu . Fiji 's second-largest island is an unspoiled slice of tropical paradise with white-sand beaches, coconut palms and fragrant frangipanis. Underwater, dive sites such as Rainbow Reef and Namena Marine Reserve have kaleidoscopic coral reefs with marine creatures including hawksbill and green sea turtles. Vanua Levu's rugged interior shelters waterfalls, swimming holes and highland villages.

You can feast cheaply on dishes like kokoda (raw fish marinated in coconut cream, tomato and lime, accompanied by rice) and banana-leaf-wrapped fish, meat and vegetables cooked in a lovo (underground oven), and experience Fijian hospitality in a traditional bure (thatched hut), local guesthouse, hotel or budget resort. Prices are lowest during the warm November-to-April wet season.

8. Ko Wai and Bang Saphan Yai, Thailand

For decades, Thailand dealt in a special kind of island paradise: remote, little-visited beaches with basic waterfront bamboo bungalows on fluffy, white sands – and little else. (Alex Garland's The Beach wasn't far from the truth.) Then, in 2004, a tsunami hit the Andaman Sea and swept away swathes of Thailand's southwestern coasts. Hotels replaced bungalows. Travelers poured in.

Still, even with new all-inclusive resorts on some islands, Thailand is one of the cheapest tropical places to travel. To find that Thailand of old, head for Ko Wai, a tiny fleck of white in the Ko Chang Archipelago with dirt-cheap beach huts, budget guesthouses and pure turquoise waters. Alternatively, Bang Saphan Yai on the upper gulf mainland has a halo of golden beaches, traditional bamboo huts and sublime sunsets. The quietest months to visit are April to June. So if you fancy an early summer vacation, you can get cheap accommodations and coral reefs all to yourself.

9. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Cheaper than its Caribbean neighbors, the Dominican Republic has everything you could want from the best tropical places: gleaming beaches, arching palm trees, countless waterfalls, bays, coves and budget boat rental – plus mangrove lagoons, windswept dunes and plenty of hiking. It's home to Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean.

One of the ways to economize in the Dominican Republic is to stay in one of the money-saving, waterfront-facing all-inclusive resorts on the island. Punta Cana on the eastern tip has these mega-resorts by the bucketload and they also have access to the country's best beaches. But don't let their budget beers make you miss the capital Santo Domingo : the capitaleños know how to get down and the city has plenty of cheap places to eat, drink and party.

10. Unguja (Zanzibar Island), Zanzibar

Africa punches well above the rest when it comes to tropical vacations but few knock your sunglasses off quite like Zanzibar Island (officially Unguja). Cinematic coral reefs surround Tanzania 's Indian Ocean crown jewel as colorful nudibranchs, leaf fish and flutters of seahorses swim temptingly off the shoreline.

The beaches are some of the world's best, with sand as soft as quilts, swaying coconut palms, beaming sunshine and very little else. Swimmable Kendwa, the widest beach on the island, is the main draw, but for crowd-free coastlines and sublime shades of turquoise, seek out Pongwe on the east coast or sweltering Jambiani to the southeast – two of the most laid back tropical places to visit in Africa.

11. Southern Mozambique, Mozambique

Ribbons of pink-blushed sand weave around the forested edges of southern Mozambique , one of the least expensive tropical vacations in this part of Africa. People have dug this tropical paradise for centuries – from the early spice traders and pirates to backpackers and now high-end tourists who chill on resort sun loungers along the Bazaruto Archipelago .

Between Tofo and Barra, Mozambique has some of the most startling stretches of pillowy-soft sand in the whole of Africa. With snorkeling safaris around coral reefs, cheap fishing charters, and affordable day boat rentals that glide through the iridescent Indian Ocean, this is a country that slows the heart rate and helps the worries of life subside – which is all you want from a cheap tropical holiday.

12. Providencia Island and Playa Blanca, Colombia

Ecuador used to be among the best cheap tropical vacations but as unrest puts the country out of the equation, those looking for a budget South America getaway should head for Colombia instead. Closer to Nicaragua than mainland Colombia, Providencia Island isn't easy to get to (you'll need to get on a tiny 20-seater plane or take a three-hour catamaran journey to get to this remote Caribbean island; both cost around US$100). But it is one of the best tropical vacation spots in the world.

Its remoteness means that its golden curls of sand are mostly footprint-free. The palms here lean over like yoga enthusiasts. The turquoise-blue waters are gin-clear. Most people are here to snorkel or dive the coral reefs or, well, sunbathe. Being a duty-free island makes Providencia even cheaper still – especially at the beach bars.

If you want paradise to be a little more accessible, mainland Colombia has options too. Try Playa Blanca, close to Cartagena , which offers beach huts, bars and hammocks for kipping overnight along its sugary, white beach.

The eastern coast is much less developed than the popular Pacific coast, making Nicaragua one of the most affordable Caribbean destinations. The best time to visit is the dry season between November and April, which offers warm temperatures and only occasional rain.

Just writing this post got me thinking about my time in the Maldives and how I could really use another visit to a paradise island –> any day now. However the notion of a paradise getaway is often associated with luxury and exorbitantly extravagant prices . But that doesn’t mean a money conscious budget traveler cannot afford a tropical island getaway.

I did some digging. This is what I found.

• Be selective about hotel accommodation   and location Spend some time and effort researching airbnb, backpacker, and budget hotel options and you’re bound to come across something that is most ideal in almost every way.
• Skip the rental car . Unless absolutely necessary, you don’t need the worry and expense of having to hire a car. Research to see if it is easy enough to get around on foot or whether there is a reliable and convenient public transportation in place.
• Choose farmers markets and local stores. When stocking up on produce or for good cheap lunch choices shop where the locals do and save a bunch. Local markets also have some of the freshest ingredients sourced locally. Good for you, good for the environment.
• Take advantage of   free activities . Each island offers a decent amount of free things to do, not even counting enjoying the beautiful beaches and inviting waters.

An archipelago of over 300 islands found in the South Pacific Ocean, Fiji combines Polynesian culture with an unbelievable landscape, unspoiled waters, and tropical island vibes. It feels like the furthest away from everyday life and one of the best islands to visit.

It is probably on your bucket-list of dream destinations already, right? However, does it come with a price tag to match based on their remoteness and dream like setting?

The biggest cost involves getting to the region , with flight prices a major chunk of the vacation budget. This is followed by the cost of hopping between the islands. However, spot a cheap flight and reduce the number of islands you choose to spend your time on, and you’re golden.

Because, once you’re on the island  it is possible to find a place to stay that is affordable and provides value for money. Also, the infrastructure is developed enough to not be overly expensive to do the simplest of things. Further, no matter the time of the year, there are always backpackers around, making it easy to find company and share costs.

Fiji comprises two big islands (Viti Levu and Venua Levu) with a road around each and a cheap reliable bus service. It helps to note that there is also a relatively cheap public ferry system to the outlying islands.

The islands provide beautiful sights, a paradise getaway and experiences unlike any other, all at a reasonable price-tag.

3 | Pulau Tioman Island, Malaysia

South East Asia, for the most part, is one of the affordable regions in the world and is known for providing value for money, offering some of the cheapest places to travel.

With an abundance of budget destinations, it is not hard to find a beautiful island  for a tropical vacation in this region that won’t break the bank. This affordability is a major selling point and a big reason why backpackers the world over make their way to SE Asia.

Home to a variety of cultures, friendly locals, delicious exotic foods, cheap beach destinations, and amazing landscapes and islands there’s plenty of reasons to visit … and then to stay a little while longer.

My pick for cheapest island vacation in Asia is Tioman Island .

Time Magazine named Pulau Tioman one of the most beautiful islands in the world way back in the 1970s.

This Malaysian island, off the east coast of the peninsula , is home to crystal blue waters, white sand beaches, an interior filled with dense rain forest, and some amazing coral reefs and marine life.

The island is part of a Marine Park . You can’t go all the way to Tioman Island and not explore the surrounding waters with some snorkeling and/or scuba diving, which the island is very well-known for.

Other activities include discovering the island’s waterfalls , jungle trekking between the villages and to the 1000m high Gunung Kajang mountain.

Easily accessed by ferry from the coastal town of Mersing, Tioman is a duty free zone . Fortunately it has not been invaded by mass tourism on the scale of Langkawi and Penang and cheap accommodation is easily found.

The majority of budget accommodation is to found on the north of the island . There are many affordable chalet operations centred around Salang, Air Batang and to a lesser extent Tekek. Dorm beds start around RM20, while single room huts cost start at RM40.

With all that money you’d be saving by visiting the best budget-friendly islands in Asia, you’ll have extra money to spend on diving the beautiful waters, cooking classes, and other adventurous and cultural experiences of which so much of travel is about.

Average daily cost on Tioman island: It is possible to spend as little as RM100 per day while on the island, including accommodation, food, and transport. For the high-end, expect to spend around RM400 per day. This amount does not include the costs of diving which would be an additional RM100 a day for equipment rental and RM100 per boat dive depending on operators.

4 | Bocas del Toro Archipelago, Panama

Panama in Central America is home to an abundance of tropical islands , referred to as Bocas del Toro.

This group of 9 main islands and hundreds of smaller cays and inlets in the Caribbean Sea just northwest of the mainland is a great option when looking for budget-friendly islands to visit in Central America.

Expect to find cotton-soft, pristine alabaster beaches without another soul in sight and only the gentle lapping of the waves and sounds of the jungle creatures to keep you company. An abundance of outdoor activities, panoramic views of Caribbean coast   surrounded by  rain forest , and the relaxing atmosphere are other draw-cards attracting travelers to this tropical paradise. The numerous trails across the island, through lush rain forest provide a taste of mother nature in its finest form.

On Bocas del Toro you get to commune with nature on the cheap . Bocas del Toro is also where you will find Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park and the Red Frog Island Resort’s Nature Preserve, home to animals like endangered sea turtles, monkeys, crocodiles, to name a few.

Bocas Town on Isla Colón is the main city and hub of the region , accessible by airplanes, ferries, private boats, and water taxis. Comprising brightly painted buildings with many on stilts on the water, only adding to its remoteness and charm.

There are dozens of activities to keep you occupied should be be so inclined. Fishing, kayaking, surfing, zip lining, water sports, and whale watching are popular with locals and visitors alike. Bocas del Toro’s many fishing boats serve as water taxis, carrying residents and visitors from the mainland to the multitude of small islands in the archipelago.

My recommendation is to spend some or all of your time on the cheaper island, but just as beautiful, Isla Bastimentos. Often considered the more relaxed alternative to Bocas del Toro Town , but at only 10 minutes by water taxi, Isla Bastimentos is becoming an increasingly popular destination for backpackers.

Average daily cost: I would say it is doable on a budget of $35 per day .

Accommodation is relatively affordable. There are many good hostels and budget hotels around and prices start at $15 for a single room or $30 for a private double room.

It is easy to find a casual meal for around $5 to $8. It is just as easy to get around town by bike or taxi, which will only set you back around $1 within the town.

5 | Zanzibar, Tanzania

An archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa, the island of Zanzibar is guaranteed to provide white sand beaches, inviting warm waters with a rich coral life, good food, friendly locals, and a culture that as varied as interesting. The best part is that it remains an affordable tropical island vacation destination  with sunsets that are as exotic as its surroundings.

The historical capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town is full of contrasts much like the rest of the island. It is a blend of Arab, Indian, Portuguese, and African cultures , reflective of its rich past and history going back all the way to the 15th century. Nungwi, found at the north of the island, is great for swimming in the ocean.

A beautiful island no doubt, it is not just a tropical destination , but a place filled with history, culture, and a popular option for the adventure and eco-conscious traveler. Don’t miss a visit to Mnemba island , the Spice Farms, Jozani Forest Reserve and the House of Wonders, among others. For the adventure lover, kitesurfing and a plethora of water-sports are on option. It also makes for the perfect chill spot after climbing Kilimanjaro .

A walk through the lively bazaars and market stalls is an enticing invitation to the senses . Referred to locally as the spice islands, you can’t miss the sights and more importantly the smell of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and other spices that diffuse almost anywhere on the island.

Average daily cost:  As a cheap place to visit, a trip to Zanzibar could possibly  cost as little as $25 USD per day . With a variety of luxury five-star experiences to laid back affordability, Zanzibar has something for everyone and is sure to make that holiday budget stretch much longer.

6 | Curaçao, Lesser Antilles island

Other note-worthy options: Ilha Grande, Santa Catarina, Aruba This lesser-known tropical island found off the Venezuelan coast on the South American continent is filled with colonial neighborhoods, beautiful beaches, colorful streets, and coral reefs. A Dutch territory in the Caribbean, Curaçao is a fairly affordable tropical vacation island and budget-friendly as a cheap Caribbean island destination. It is best to visit during the off-season of May – October to score reduced flights and hotel specials at one of the many value for money resorts. The relatively large Curaçao International Airport accommodates a large number of low-cost competing airlines. The island is located outside of the hurricane belt and is not affected by rains and sever weather conditions unlike the rest of the Caribbean. The interesting mix of Creole, Dutch, and Spanish influences gives  Curaçao a unique feel and makes it one of the best islands to vacation. The World Heritage city of Willemstad comprising awesome architecture, pastel-colored buildings, the floating Queen Emma Bridge, and world-class museums awaits your arrival. While the clear sugary beaches and turquoise waters of Westpunt can be reached in under two hours. The tropical island’s protected coral reefs , optimal diving conditions, and rich marine life attracts aquatic-lovers the world over to Curaçao. Average daily cost of Curaçao: Expect to pay around US$ 80 per person per day on a budget . Accommodation can be found starting at $35. While you could certainly spend more on a luxurious trip to Curaçao, it helps to keep things simple.

Book in advance to score a cheap flight. For accommodation take a look at the many guesthouses and bed and breakfasts on offer. There is a wide variety of food options available from posh restaurants to street food vendors, and food trucks, naturally catering to all tastes and budgets. Although the official currency of Curaçao is the Antillean guilder, US dollars are widely accepted.

7 | Cozumel, Mexico

Mexico’s largest Caribbean island off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel has grown from a quiet fishing village to a hotspot for travelers around the world . Apart from the natural beauty and relaxed island lifestyle, a big draw-card is that it remains a cheap island to visit . It often tops the lists of budget-friendly islands.

Cozumel falls under the Greater Cancun zone, part of the state of Quintana Roo, and this huge cluster of resort areas is served by one one airport. Find a cheap flight and you’re good to go for a n amazing tropical island vacation that will not break the bank . This is of course dependent on spending money wisely and avoiding the tourist traps .

To reach Cozumel without paying for an expensive direct flight , it is recommended to fly into Cancun on one of the many budget airlines that arrive here each day. Then continue by bus or van to Playa del Carmen, followed by the ferry from the Mexican mainland to Cozumel.

Famous for its pristine coral reefs and perfect current conditions , makes snorkeling and particularly diving in the clear blue waters a delight. In fact, it is described as a diving paradise and one of the best scuba diving destinations in the western hemisphere with its towering coral formations and lush reef walls. The great thing is that diving in Cozumel is suitable for all levels from beginner to most technically advanced.

Make your way past the main town of San Miguel de Cozumel  and avoid the cruise ship day trip crowds, to discover Maya ruins, and a variety of ecotourism activities to keep you entertained. Don’t miss a visit to sites such as San Gervasio Archaeological Zone, Chankanaab National Park, or the Atlantis Submarine. For the best beaches on the island go to Playa San Francisca or Playa Palanc .

Average daily cost in Cozumel: It is highly possibly to discover the island on a budget. Expect to pay M$750 or $40 per person per day.

Well-priced private rooms can be found outside the centre of town. Local street food is another good option costing around 30 pesos. Dinner at a decent restaurant is usually around 140 pesos.

It is not necessary to rent a cat as getting around is easy by way of walking, scooter, or taxi. The majority of expenses, outside of getting to the island, will be the activities such as diving and snorkeling.

8 | Maafushi Island, Maldives

Is the Maldives even synonymous with cheap tropical vacations? Is it possible to visit the Maldives on a budget , you ask. Why yes . This is provided you visit the local islands instead of the private islands resorts. On these local islands, where most of the charm and authenticity of the region is to be found, is where you will find guesthouses and surf camps.

By staying at a guesthouse and visiting luxury resorts on a day trip, you get to experience the beauty of these paradise islands without breaking the bank .

So which tropical islands in the Maldives provide value for money ? A handful of options come to mind, but this is by no means exhaustive. Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Biyadhoo, Thoddoo, Guraidhoo, Ellaidhoo, among others.

Maafushi, just a short thirty minutes away from the capital Malé by speedboat, is one of the biggest and most popular local islands in the Maldives. It is also an inexpensive tropical island to visit. Prices have gone up since more people have discovered this spot, but still remains reasonable, at least for now.

Located in the South Male Atoll , with over 80 guesthouses, it provides ample choice for accommodation. It is the local inhabited island with the most number of guest houses in the country.

Guest houses provide various excursions around the island and to neighboring islands for vacation activities that include snorkeling, fishing, and water sports excursions. Three dive centres can also be found in Maafushi.

The atmosphere on the island is relaxed and comfortable, but due to its increase in popularity, Maafushi can get crowded in the peak season.

Expect to find a white sandy beach on the north-eastern side of the island where a beautiful view of the surrounding Indian Ocean awaits with crystal clear waters and a shallow lagoon.

Average daily cost in Maafushi: You can get by on $45 per day .

The large number of guesthouses and the competition keeps the prices within a budget level . It helps to look around in advance to secure the most suitable. You could get to Maafushi by the local ferry from Male or the airport costing $2 each way. Alternatively, a speedboat would get you here in half the time for $25.

Maafushi island offers a reasonable number of food options and just by walking around you will come across local cafes offering something to suit every taste and budget . Many guesthouses have in-house restaurants too. Even splurging a little and choosing a spot under the rusting palms with a view of the lagoon won’t break the bank or that holiday budget.

9 | Crete, Greece

Best affordable island to visit in Europe

Other note-worthy options:  Lesvos, Lemnos, Hvar, Sardinia, Corsica.

More than 100 islands can be found scatted among the countries in Europe . From the warm waters of the Mediterranean in the south to the rocky Atlantic islands in the Scandinavian north.

Fortunately, the abundance of budget airlines in this region makes finding cheap islands to visit that much more attractive and possible. There are also affordable ferries that depart from Split, Athens, Barcelona, Genoa, and Livorno, to name a few, allowing for an even wider choice.

Immaculate white-sand beaches, diverse landscapes, and affordable prices make Sardinia, Corsica, Hvar, Lesvos, and many other islands a good choice.

However, my choice for cheap island vacations in Europe would be Crete.

Humans have lived on the island of Crete for at least 130,000 years. If you’re wondering why, it has probably got something to do with its beauty, location, and magical Mediterranean charm .

Due to the island’s geographical position between Europe, Asia Minor, and Africa, Crete became a centre of influence. Crete was the location of  Europe’s first advanced civilisation and traces of this can be found throughout the island. In-between all of this, you will find Minoan, Dorian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Arab influences reflecting the island’s rich past.

Located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea, the island is the largest and most populous of all the Greek islands. Large enough for you to spend your entire vacation just on this one island , exploring its hidden gems and extraordinary treasures.

Wander around and find magnificent mountains-capes, pretty beaches, historic monuments , Cretan melodies, picturesque villages, and tsikoudia spirit.

Average daily cost: Because of the popularity of Crete as a holiday destination, the islands infrastructure caters to all budgets. Expect to pay an average of €70 per day .

There is a wide variety of accommodation options ranging from all-inclusive luxury to smaller family owned apartments and camping facilities. My advice would be to go beyond the big north coast resorts in Crete to places like Zakros, Paleochora, Sitia, and Ierapetra.

The average cost of food in Crete is €20 per day. For those on a tighter budget, forego the expensive cafes and restaurants on the waterfront for the cheaper and more traditional places to be found off the main street and along the back streets. Self catering a good option if you’re looking to save. Local produce including fresh bread, olives, vegetables, and fruit is plentiful and at a very good price. The cost of a taxi ride is much more than public transportation.

10 | Oahu, Hawaii

Cheapest island to visit in Hawaii and North Pacific

Hawaii, world-renowned for its epic volcanoes , emerald green landscapes, white sandy beaches as far as the eye can see, hours of sunshine every single day, and delicious food. However this lush tropical paradise is not considered as a bargain travel destination.

Sure, this part of the world does not offer the most affordable islands to visit, but if you do have your heart set on visiting an island in the North Pacific, which island should you choose?

Well, the least expensive Hawaiian island to visit is Oahu .

Due to an abundance of flights, accommodation, tours, and attractions, this island is the most affordable island in the North Pacific for travellers, provided a little homework is done on your part.

If you are backpacking Oahu on a budget , give the ocean-facing hotel rooms, umbrella drinks, and lomi lomi massages a miss. What you should do is enjoy the blue waters, hiking in the countryside, soaking up the sun and the aloha vibe instead, all of which are free or come at a minimal cost.

The most famous beaches of Hawaii are easily accessible and you cannot miss hiking the iconic Diamond Head which comes at a meager $1, but provides panoramic skyline and ocean views. All of this undoubtedly makes Oahu the best island to visit in Hawaii.

Here are some helpful tips if you’re planning on backpacking Hawaii on a budget:

— To keep the costs down be flexible both in terms of when you can travel and the type of accommodation option. This is especially important when looking at booking flights, as this is going to be the largest expense of a trip to Hawaii. Visit in the off-season (late winter, spring or early fall) and you get to avoid the crowds and experience reduced prices.

— Stay away from the main tourist cities and be  selective about hotel accommodation. It helps stretch your money further by spending some time researching airbnb, backpacker, and budget hotel options.

— Do skip the rental car . There is a reliable and convenient public transportation called TheBus and it will get you pretty much anywhere on the island for $2.50 one-way.

— Choose farmers markets and ABC stores for good cheap lunch choices and for stocking up on produce.

— Take advantage of free activities . Each island offers a decent amount of free things to do.

Banwa Private Island

Located in the Palawan archipelago, this private island resort will set you back a whopping $100,000 a night. Yes, PER night. On this secluded you will find only a handful of beachfront villas where infinity pools come standard. A private chef will arrange freshly caught fish and vegetable picked from the island and ensure your cravings are never left unwanted.

Don’t have 100 grand to spare? Choose Batangas or Zambales instead.

Other expensive islands that are almost guaranteed to break the bank:

Turks and Caicos, Bora Bora, British Virgin Islands, St. Barthelemy, Lofoten Islands, Barbados, Fregate, Sonevajani, Antigua and Barbuda.

Damn guys, all this talk about tropical island life has given me the biggest urge for a spontaneous paradise getaway.

As you can see, a tropical island vacation does not necessarily mean an automatic dent in your travel savings . It is highly possible to visit an island at many points around the world that is both beautiful and provides value for money without costing an arm and a leg.

Sri Lanka is a great island destination for anyone looking for an adventure because the island nation is full of culture, history, wildlife, and scenery.

Sri Lanka has something for every style of traveler, be it luxury or budget backpacker, and there’s so much to do in this compact country that you might keep returning time after time. 

You can go on elephant safaris in the national parks, whale watching along the coast, relax on white-sand beaches or trek into the jungles or highlands in search of ancient cities and temples. 

It is all these things that keep us coming back to Sri Lanka. We’ve spent more than a month traveling this country and constantly discover new things.

3. Deception Island

Deception Island might not be the traditional definition when you think of exotic islands, but it’s certainly a raw and untraveled place. 

In that sense, it’s exotic, because few people ever make it to the Antarctic to set foot upon the black sand beaches of Deception Island . 

This is a rugged and beautiful place, an island at the mercy of the extreme Antarctic weather. It is teeming with seals and penguins and is known for its dramatic harbor, formed from the caldera of a sunken volcano. 

Add all that to the fact that the beach is a hot water beach. Boiling hot water bubbles up through the sand causing a steamy release at the top as it contrasts with the cold air.

Deception Island is as exotic as islands come.

4. Greenland

Another rugged and wild island to visit is Greenland, the largest island in the world.

Greenland is also at the mercy of extreme weather, as the island stretches deep into the Arctic Circle.

You’re best visiting in summer when the snow has melted and there’s a surprising abundance of wildlife. Brave the winter though and you can experience the northern lights and learn how to snowmobile or dog sled.

In Greenland, there are huge glaciers, endless stretches of wilderness and countless opportunities for adventure.

We spent 3 weeks exploring Greenland, visiting places like Ilulissat , Kangerlussuaq , Sisimiut , and Nuuk . We also walked the 100 mile Arctic Circle Trail. 

5. Busuanga, Philippines 

The Philippines is an archipelago that’s composed of thousands of exotic islands, but one of the most outstanding is Busuanga .

Located north of Palawan and south of Manila , Busuanga is the jumping-off point for island hopping through the Calamianes Islands. 

Here you can find Coron , one of the most popular destinations in the Philippines, where there are freshwater lakes, tall limestone karst rocks, and endless snorkeling and diving opportunities in both wrecks and reefs.

Busuanga is an island that is largely undiscovered as most travelers do not venture beyond the popular Coron Town.

This is hands down one of our favorite places in the world. We’ve been multiple times since we first discovered this area in 2014.

Cuba is one of the most exotic islands in the Caribbean because the large island nation is brimming with diversity.

7. Easter Island

Easter Island is just about as exotic as it gets, especially if it’s intrigue and isolation that draws you in.

First of all, Easter Island is incredibly remote , being found in the Pacific Ocean somewhere between Chile and New Zealand. 

But most of all, this is a mysterious place, where the fascinating Easter Island Moai statues stand tall.

These are statues that have confused and baffled scholars for decades, and they truly add to the mystique of this rugged and raw destination.

Moai aside, this island is rich in natural beauty and pacific islander culture. It’s a journey for the senses and we’d recommend you plan at least a week for a visit.

8. Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Located off the coast of New Guinea, the Raja Ampat islands are one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world. 

This collection of well over 1000 small islands is remote, and it’s still being discovered by tourists and travelers. 

Marine life thrives in the waters here, and while the islands and beaches are themselves paradisiacal, it’s what’s beneath the waves that really draws people in. 

This area is remote and expensive by typical Southeast Asia standards, but totally worth the money and effort to visit.

9. Islands of Fiji

Fiji is a classic tropical getaway, and few other places in the world can be described as exotic islands, in the same easy manner that Fiji and its many islands can.

You can snorkel pristine coral reefs and scuba dive in one of the most biodiverse parts of the Pacific.

Chase waterfalls and uncover the wildlife within Fiji’s rainforest , or simply sit back, relax and unwind in the sunshine on a white sand beach.

We spent a month traveling throughout Fiji and can personally attest that it is a place of rich culture and insane natural beauty.

Places like Vanua Levu , Taveuni, Qamea, Viti Levu , Pacific Harbour , the Mamanuca Islands , and the Yasawa Islands should not be missed.

11. Dominica

Located in the Caribbean , Dominica is one of the best islands to visit if you are looking for outdoor activities.

Located off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is one of the most exotic islands to visit in Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Zanzibar is not just an island that’s known for its white-sand beaches and crystal clear water – although there are plenty of both to enjoy – it’s an island that’s also renowned for its culture and history. 

You can uncover the best of the island’s rich heritage and colonial history – be it African, Portuguese, Omani or British – in Stone Town, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital.

The entire place is as gorgeous as it is low cost, with many hostels offering rooms for between 10 and 20 USD per night.

Most of the beaches are free of charge to access, and the historic and charming Stone Town bustles with beautiful architecture and lots of cheap entertainment. I've been to 30 tropical islands. From Bora Bora to Barbados, here are the top 5 I'd visit again.

• I've visited more than 30 tropical islands around the world, but five stand out from the rest.
• Bora Bora and Curaçao's beautiful beaches make them the perfect places for a relaxing vacation.
• Barbados has tons of activities, such as touring a rum distillery and visiting Rihanna's childhood home.

As a travel writer specializing in tropical destinations , I've been lucky enough to have visited 30 islands around the world. Because of my extensive travels, people often ask me which islands I'd return to.

This isn't surprising, considering how many people plan to travel across the globe each year — in a survey at the start of the year, 30% of Americans said they had international travel plans in 2024. But it's not always easy to figure out which tropical destination is the best vacation spot for you.

Each island I've been to has been idyllic and unique, but a few lingered in my salt-spray-tinged memories long after my tan faded. Here are the five islands I always recommend to other travelers.

I couldn't get enough of Bora Bora's beauty and great cuisine.

This South Pacific haven screams "paradise." Though getting there was a long journey — I had to take a 16-hour flight from New York to Tahiti, followed by an hourlong flight to Bora Bora — the island was absolutely otherworldly.

The island, formed by an extinct volcano, is surrounded by a calm turquoise lagoon that's basically a huge wading pool. I remember marveling at rows of romantic bungalows with glass floors and thatched roofs overlooking the water.

The island's Mount Otemanu, shrouded by clouds, was also a postcard-worthy sight from any angle.

The local cuisine combines French and Polynesian cultures. I enjoyed meals such as poisson cru, a ceviche-like dish made with coconut milk, tomatoes, and cucumber. It was truly heaven on earth.

I loved the luxurious vibes in St. Barts.

Glittering St. Barts is full of fancy spots, with a yacht-filled harbor, designer shops along the pristine streets of Gustavia (the island's capital), and luxurious hotels such as the Hotel Manapany and Eden Rock.

I found a lively day-drinking scene at Nikki Beach , a destination that's attracted celebrity guests such as Mariah Carey, and restaurants with menus and wine lists to rival any Parisian hot spot.

But you don't have to be a multimillionaire to soak in the island's beguiling swankiness. During my visit, I spent an afternoon on a catamaran ride and did some window shopping at the home-design store Maison Pélican.

Visitors can also find elevated cuisine at various price points — I had tuna poke and chilled rosé from Ti' Corail on a laid-back beach, and it was one of my favorite meals.

I was most surprised by the many local beaches , such as the sandy Gouverneur Beach and the secluded Colombier Beach, a spot accessible only after a steep (but worth it) hike.

If you're a Francophile who adores fabulous food and an upscale feel, I highly recommend St. Barts.

St. Martin is the perfect destination for plane and food enthusiasts.

St. Martin is split into two distinct French and Dutch sides. I thought the French side had a quiet, relaxed vibe during my visit.

I lay on the beach at Orient Bay (referred to as the Saint-Tropez of the Caribbean ) and shopped at the luxury boutiques in Marigot, the capital of the French collectivity on St. Martin.

I found the Dutch side much livelier as I clubbed at the Soggy Dollar Bar in Simpson Bay and sipped rum cocktails while watching the sunset at The Rusty Parrot.

The island is also the ultimate destination for aviation geeks, as the Princess Juliana International Airport is steps away from Maho Beach. I spent hours watching planes fly directly above me.

Visitors can also island hop to nearby St. Barts and Anguilla, easily accessible by ferry or plane.

I was blown away by Curaçao's beautiful beaches and scenery.

Curaçao is known for having more than 35 beaches, so every sun-worshipper can find their perfect spot.

During my visit, it seemed that some beaches, such as Playa Piskadó, were mainly frequented by locals, so they were uncrowded and relaxed. Others, such as Grote Knip and Playa Kalki, in quiet coves, were very tranquil.

While on the island, I noticed a fun Dutch influence through food such as fried meat snacks called bitterballen. I also encountered an unexpected gin-and-tonic culture , as Dutch genever (a spirit made in Holland and Belgium) is similar to gin.

During my stay, I sipped my way through the gin-and-tonic menu at Zest Restaurant & Beach Cafe on the lively Jan Thiel Beach and, of course, tried the island's namesake bright-blue liqueur.

Handelskade, a row of brightly colored Dutch colonial buildings lining the water in Willemstad (the island's capital), was the perfect photo op.

As an added bonus, Curaçao is part of the ABC islands (the other two being Aruba and Bonaire), which are unlikely to be severely impacted by hurricanes .

I enjoyed Barbados' lively events and rum distillery.

The Caribbean is synonymous with rum, but in my opinion, no island offers as authentic an experience as this destination.

Based in Barbados, the iconic rum producer Mount Gay has been selling the spirit since 1703 . Touring and tasting at the company's distillery is a must-do for any fan of the sugarcane-based spirit.

Visitors can also make their way through Barbados' flavorful cocktails (and cuisine) at lively bars and restaurants. I loved the potent rum punch and local fish cakes at Oasis Beach Bar, as well as the seared jerk tuna and butter beans at Calma Beach Club.

The island was perpetually vibrant — it seemed like a party, festival, or concert was always happening. The snorkeling in Carlisle Bay was also amazing, as I saw parrotfish, hawksbill turtles, and seahorses.

Plus, Rihanna fans can snap a selfie in front of the Barbadian native's colorful childhood home, where her name adorns the doormat.

Wave expected to become Tropical Storm Ernesto. See how it could affect Florida

A week after Hurricane Debby made landfall on Florida's Big Bend , a new tropical storm is expected to develop in the Atlantic.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Five is expected to become a tropical depression later today or tonight and then strengthen Tropical Storm Ernesto as it approaches the Leeward Islands, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Current projections have it becoming a hurricane by Thursday morning. And while the future Ernesto is not tracking toward Florida, experts say continue to be prepare for this busy hurricane season .

At 8 a.m., the National Hurricane Center NOAA hurricane hunters were investigating the disturbance.

Tropical storm warning have been issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

AccuWeather forecasters said Potential Tropical Cyclone Five " could rapidly organize to become the basin's next tropical storm or even major hurricane in the coming days as it sweeps through the Caribbean.

"By the middle of this week, forecasters warn that this feature could ramp up to at least a Category 1 hurricane as it travels across the warm waters of the far northeastern Caribbean Sea and shifts north of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola" and has the potential to ramp up into a major hurricane.

A major hurricane is one with sustained winds of at least 111 mph, making it at least a Category 3 storm. 

Current forecasts and models predict the storm will curve north in the Atlantic, staying east of Florida and the U.S.

No watches or warning connected to Potential Tropical Cyclone Five have been issued for Florida.

The National Hurricane Center has issued the following watches:

Tropical storm warning:

• St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda and Anguilla
• St. Martin and St. Barthelemy
• St. Maarten
• British Virgin Islands
• U.S. Virgin Islands
• Puerto Rico

A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.

How strong is Potential Tropical Cyclone Five and where is it going?

At 11 a.m., the disturbance was centered near latitude 15.1 North, longitude 55.6 West.

The system is moving toward the west near 26 mph. A westward to west-northwestward motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days.

On the forecast track, the disturbance is expected to move across portions of the Leeward Islands late tonight or Tuesday and approach the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Tuesday evening. Then, the disturbance is forecast to move away from Puerto Rico over the western Atlantic through midweek.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 35 mph, with higher gusts.

Some strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and the disturbance is expected to become a tropical depression later today or tonight and become a tropical storm as it nears the Leeward Islands

"Currently, the weather along the southeastern U.S. coast looks fairly nice this weekend, so even if the storm remains well offshore, coastal impacts such as rough surf and rip currents could spell trouble for beach-goers trying to soak up the last weekends of summer," said AccuWeather  Meteorologist Emma Belscher.

An impact on Florida, the Bahamas and the southeastern U.S. depends on steering winds in the atmosphere, AccuWeather said.

While the storm is expected to take a track toward Bermuda, if its takes a bit more of a southern track initially, it could be pushed closer the East Coast, Belscher said.

Late this week, Florida could see rough surf, strong rip currents and dangerous seas, according to AccuWeather.

What impact could Potential Tropical Cyclone 5 have and what areas could be affected?

• Wind : Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area for the Leeward Islands beginning late tonight or Tuesday. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin spreading over the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Tuesday night or early Wednesday.
• A storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels in the British Virgin Islands. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.
• For Puerto Rico, 3 to 6 inches of rainfall, with maximum amounts of 10 inches, is expected.
• Elsewhere in the Caribbean, Potential Tropical Cyclone Five is expected to produce the following rain accumulations through Friday morning: Windward Islands, 1 to 4 inches; Eastern Hispaniola, 2 to 4 inches.

• Surf : Swells generated by the system will likely begin to affect portions of the Leeward Islands beginning tonight. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

What else is out there and how likely are they to strengthen?

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two tropical waves:

• First wave: A tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic is located over the Cabo Verde Islands. It's moving west at 5-11 mph.
• Second wave: Another tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean stretches from Cuba into Panama.

What do the colored areas on the NOAA map mean?

The hatched areas on a tropical outlook map indicate "areas where a tropical cyclone — which could be a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane — could develop," said National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome.

The colors make it visibly clear how likely a system could develop with yellow being low, orange medium and red high.

The National Hurricane Center generally doesn't issue tropical advisories until a there is a named storm, but there is an exception.

"If a system is near land and there is potential for development, the National Hurricane Center won't wait before it issues advisories, even if the system hasn't become an actual storm. This gives residents time to prepare," Rhome said.

Who is likely to be impacted? 

It's too early at this time to determine if there will be any impact to Florida or the U.S. from the tropical waves.

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and to always be prepared. That advice is particularly important for what is expected to be a  very active hurricane season.

A tornado formed by Tropical Storm Debby devastated the town of Lucama in Wilson County, North Carolina, on Aug. 8. Several homes and even a school were severely damaged. One fatality was reported.

On the heels of Hurricane Debby, AccuWeather hurricane experts are tracking the latest tropical rainstorm, designated Potential Tropical Cyclone 5 by the National Hurricane Center, across the central Atlantic Ocean, which could rapidly organize to become the basin's next tropical storm or even major hurricane in the coming days as it sweeps through the Caribbean, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and rough surf into midweek.

Late Saturday, Aug. 10, AccuWeather initiated a forecast track map for this tropical rainstorm, highlighting the risk for impactful weather across the Caribbean and Bermuda. The current forecast shows this feature ramping up to a tropical storm (sustained winds of 39-73 mph on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale ) as early as Monday.

Once this feature reaches tropical-storm strength, it would claim the next name on the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season storm lineup, which is Ernesto.

Tracking into anomalously warm waters

By the middle of this week, forecasters warn that this feature could ramp up to at least a Category 1 hurricane as it travels across the warm waters of the far northeastern Caribbean Sea and shifts north of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. Sea-surface temperatures across this zone in the Atlantic are well above the minimum threshold required for tropical development (>26ºC, or 78.8ºF), currently reading between 28-30ºC (82.4-86ºF).

"Ocean temperatures across the Atlantic basin as a whole remain near-record levels, only trailing 2023 values," explained AccuWeather Meteorologist and Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva.

Ocean Heat Content, a measure of how much energy and warmth is absorbed by the sun and takes into account the depth of how far that warm water extends vertically, is also at near-record levels in the Main Development Region. Not only are water levels anomalously warm at the surface, the elevated ocean temperatures extend hundreds of feet down below the oceans surface.

"Factors such as near-record ocean heat content levels can help to significantly contribute to the rapid intensification of hurricanes. Both Hurricane Beryl this year and Hurricane Ian in 2022 took advantage of very high sea-surface temperatures and ocean heat content, which allowed these storms to rapidly intensify as a result," added DaSilva.

AccuWeather hurricane experts are putting areas of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola on alert for tropical impacts this week. This healthy tropical rainstorm charging across the warm waters of the central Atlantic will be the next notable feature in the wake of Debby to bring impacts to the western Atlantic.

This feature is projected to take on a general west-northwesterly track through at least the middle of this week; however, forecasters say that a crucial factor for whether or not locations in the Bahamas, Florida and the remainder of the southeastern United States coast could feel impacts from this storm is dependent upon upper-level steering winds in the atmosphere.

Wind shear is forecast to be pretty light as the storm approaches and moves through the northeastern Caribbean Islands. After moving through the islands, the storm will likely be drawn to the north by an amplified southward dip in the jet stream.

"Currently, the weather along the southeastern U.S. coast looks fairly nice this weekend, so even if the storm remains well offshore, coastal impacts such as rough surf and rip currents could spell trouble for beach-goers trying to soak up the last weekends of summer," explained AccuWeather Meteorologist Emma Belscher.

At this time, the tropical rainstorm is expected to veer northward and then slightly northeast by late week, potentially ramping up to a major hurricane (characterized as Category 3 or higher) for a time before setting its sites on Bermuda by the upcoming weekend.

Belscher added that while the storm is expected to journey towards Bermuda, if its takes a bit more of a southern track initially, it could be pushed closer the East Coast.

Intense rainfall and boisterous winds to impact the islands

As this tropical rainstorm advances westward and scrapes the Leeward Islands early this week, it will produce rounds of rain across the region. The outer rainbands of the storm are expected to reach the Lesser Antilles later Monday before encompassing the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Monday night into Tuesday.

Heavy rain from this feature will pose the risk for flash flooding and mudslides across the islands, especially across the mountainous terrain. In general, tropical rainfall totals will range up to 2-4 inches across Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis and Anguilla.

Farther west, into Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, it will be a similar story with tropical totals up to 2-4 inches. Rainfall amounts to this degree can lead to flooding, washouts, dangerous travel and mudslides across the eastern and northern Caribbean Islands.

Gusty winds are projected to ramp up early this week as the tropical feature barrels across the northeastern Caribbean Islands. Gusts can exceed 80 mph from the Lesser Antilles to Puerto Rico as the center of the storm passes through the region. Winds can even surpass 100 mph, primarily over water, if the storm strengthens and veers northward later in the week.

2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season

AccuWeather meteorologists insist that a super-charged Atlantic hurricane season will unfold this year ,  with a large number of tropical storms and hurricanes. Some storms are likely  to undergo rapid intensification due largely to the ongoing higher-than-historical average water temperatures.

Atlantic front forming into tropical storm 'rapidly moving' west toward U.S. Virgin Islands

As parts of the East Coast were still recovering from destruction wrought by the remnants of Hurricane Debby, the next Atlantic front was developing Monday into a potential tropical storm and quickly moving west.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Five was taking shape 645 miles east-southeast of Antigua and was headed west-northwest at 25 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in a 5 a.m. update. Multiple Caribbean islands, including the U.S. Virgin Islands, are in its probable path.

The potential cyclone was gaining strength rapidly enough that the hurricane center said it would most likely be a named Tropical Storm Ernesto by the end of Monday, possibly around the same time it passes east of Puerto Rico, which can expect storm surges of up to 3 feet and as much as 10 inches of rain in some areas.

If it eventually gains enough strength — 74 mph or greater sustained winds — it would be the third hurricane of the season. So far, the hurricane center has not said the front was headed for hurricane status.

The potential cyclone was producing maximum sustained winds of 30 mph Sunday night. It would take maximum sustained winds of 39 mph to graduate to tropical storm status. It would be the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season so far, as indicated by its temporary name.

The potential cyclone has prompted a 48-hour tropical storm watch, which in this case warns of possible damaging winds, high surf and potential flooding of up to 6 inches of rain, for the following Caribbean islands: Guadeloupe, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Martin, Sint Maarten, Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culbrera.

The front is projected to reach those islands by early Tuesday afternoon, according to hurricane center information.

In addition, the hurricane center is warning the populations of the Leeward Islands and the British and the U.S. Virgin Islands — all to the west of those Caribbean islands under the tropical storm watch — to monitor the front, which could strike them early Wednesday.

The forecast track takes the front into the Caribbean region but then has it turning directly northward into the Atlantic, keeping it off the coast of the mainland U.S. for now.

The government of Sint Martin, a small island divided into two areas each controlled by the Netherlands and France, said it had responded to a landslide and the collapse of a newly built road surface after major rainfall.

Policy adviser Luciano Nicholls blamed a lack of proper drainage for the disruption. “Incidents like these clearly demonstrate the need for proper and sustainable development going forward, including proper infrastructure management,” he said in a statement.

The potential cyclone's formation appears to be consistent with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's latest outlook for the Atlantic hurricane season, which concludes that there's a 90% chance of an above-normal number of storms by the time it concludes in November.

The Colorado State University's hurricane forecast is in agreement. It says near-record warmth in the tropical Atlantic is providing ample fuel for storm development.

"Extremely warm sea surface temperatures provide a much more conducive dynamic and thermodynamic environment for hurricane formation and intensification," it said in its latest forecast paper, published Sunday.

It added, "We anticipate a well above-average probability for major hurricane landfalls."

Meanwhile, 2 million people across eastern North Carolina are under flood watches as rainfall adds to already swollen rivers.

Debby is the tropical system that won't stop giving – rainfall that is – trillions and trillions of gallons are falling as the former hurricane meanders up the East Coast. As of Friday, Debby has claimed at least eight lives and flooded dozens of neighborhoods. The storm continues breaching and collapsing roads and dams as the rain sends stream and river levels soaring in a matter of hours.

Here’s a look at where Tropical Storm Debby is, where it is heading next, forecasts for the weekend, and the trail of flooding it has left in its wake since it first made landfall in Florida on Monday:

Record rainfall in the South from Debby

Debby has spawned several tornadoes, at least one deadly, as it brought torrential rainfall to Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas, leaving extensive flooding and overwhelmed communities in its wake. In some cases, the rain and stream levels set new records.

The storm made a second landfall in South Carolina on Thursday, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and is projected to bring up to 6 inches more rain to some areas over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Flash flooding triggered water rescues, overtook roads and breached several dams as winds knocked over trees and tangled power lines. The weather service warns that the risk will continue through Sunday Morning.

More than 250,000 have experienced power outages

More than 300,000 power outages have been reported over the past three days in these states as of Thursday morning, according to USA TODAY's power outage database – some in Florida were in the dark for days. Tens od thousands are already seeing outages in Virginia.

Natural water systems like rivers, bayous and lakes help regulate water levels during rainfall, but prolonged precipitation can cause water flow to stall and even reverse direction.

A look at Debby from space

Debby's damage could have been worse.

"While rain totals are not expected to reach the initially feared extreme rates of nearly 30 inches, any time a region of the country experiences 10 to 20 inches of rain in just a few days, that is quite notable," said Steve Bowen, chief science officer for Gallagher Re, a reinsurance brokerage. He pointed to previous events such as Hurricane Florence in 2018 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 that brought torrential rain and flooding to the Carolinas.

In a preliminary summary of the storm, Bowen said economic losses from Debby would be mostly water-related and may total in the low single digit billions.  

“ The economic toll of Florence alone was $30 billion (in today's dollars),” he said. While Debby’s rainfall footprint “will be much more expansive,” its rain totals aren’t likely to be as robust.

Given the extent of the flooding, Bowen said: “This is yet another example that while there is often much attention on the category intensity of a tropical system, it's the impacts of water (either coastal or inland) from these events that can be the deadliest and most damaging.”
