5 Persons on a Heavy Duty Fishing Boat Raft

This boat is perfect for a day out on the lake with the family. It’s capable of carrying up to 1,300 lbs. Plus, there’s enough room for up to 5 adults to fit comfortably.

Speaking of comfort, this product comes with inflatable seats as well. With these, you can sit and relax as you float along.

The best part? This boat is super affordable. It’s a great choice for anyone looking to get their first boat. With it, you won’t have to cash in to enjoy boating to the fullest.

If you’ve never had an inflatable before, you also won’t have any problems. Setting it up is very easy. All you have to do is pump it up, and you’re ready to go.

All of these make this product perfect for first-time buyers. It’s also a great choice for anyone who wants to take their family or friends to the lake without spending too much.

Intex Excursion 5 inflatable boat review part 1

When you order your Intex Excursion 5, you get more than just the boat. Included in the package are some freebies as well.

Almost every boat in the market comes with a set of oars. But you should never underestimate how important these are. With Excursion 5, you’ll get a nice set of aluminum oars to navigate without a motor.

One of the props of using inflatable boats is that they’re easy to bring along. Well, the Excursion 5 is even easier thanks to the carry bag it comes with. This bag is also a great place to store your boat once you’ve deflated it.

Also in the box is an Intex hand pump, which is one of our top 10 pumps for inflatable boats . It’s a double-action pump, putting air in as you push and pull. Using this will take some work, but you can blow up your entire boat within 15 minutes.

Finally, there’s also a repair kit included . Whenever you come across minor problems, this kit allows you to fix them up in no time.

With these, you’ll have everything you need for your trip. Nothing is lacking in this complete package. That’s why we say this is a great option for first-timers.

Overview of Features

A product wouldn’t be so popular if it was no good, would it? But at the same time, no boat is perfect, especially one that costs so little.

Now that you know who this boat is for, and what it comes with, let’s look at the boat itself.

Every boat has a good, a bad, and an ugly side. So let’s take a look at each one.

Intex Excursion Inflatable 5 Person

Aside from being an affordable, easy-to-use boat with a bunch of freebies, there’s still a lot of good things to say about the Intex Excursion 5. We like the:

  • Are Noco Marine Battery Chargers Good?
  • Outdoor Master Whale Review: Rechargeable SUP Air Pump
  • Vinyl build
  • 3-chamber design
  • Boston valves
  • Convenience features
  • Lightweight

You’d think a cheap boat would be made of poor material. However, this boat is made from rugged vinyl. It is surprisingly strong, and won’t puncture easily.

It also features a 3-chamber design. This way, if one leaks, the other two will keep their air and keep your boat afloat. You’ll only need to patch one chamber.

Each of these chambers contains a Boston valve. If you’ve read our complete guide to Boston valves , you know that these are one of the best valves for inflating your boat. With it, you can get air in without worrying about it escaping.

All along the side of the boat are other features to make your trips more convenient and enjoyable. There are oar holders, fishing rod holders, grab handles, and a gear pouch. There are also fittings on the stern for attaching a motor mount .

To top it all off, this boat is incredibly lightweight. The entire package only weighs 50 lbs, which is incredible for a 5-person boat. With the carry bag it comes with, you can bring this boat along with ease.

Every salesperson tries to hide the bad sides of their product as much as possible. But here at Anchor Travel, we’re committed to giving our readers the whole picture.

Before you buy the Excursion 5, you should know a few things. We don’t like the

  • Short paddles
  • Tendency to drift away
  • Low-quality plastic

Keep in mind that the Excursion 5 is quite a wide boat. It’s 5 ft. and 6in. across. To row, you’d need paddles that are quite long.

Unfortunately, the paddles are a bit short. It works, but it may be a little uncomfortable to navigate this boat alone.

The boat is also super lightweight, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. The bad side of this is that the boat tends to drift easily. Any light current will carry your boat, so you’ll need an anchor to stay in place.

Lastly, the oar holders, grab handles, and fishing rod holders are all made from plastic. For the most part, this isn’t a big deal, but you wouldn’t want to test their strength either.

When you purchase this boat, it’s best to pump it up right away as a test. There’s always a few bad eggs, especially for low-cost boats. So do this right away, because you may find a leak right off the box .

The good news is that Amazon has a return policy. If you find a problem within 30-days, you can send it back for a replacement. Then you’ll be good to go.

Try not to miss this window, because then you’ll have to deal with Intex yourself. And this isn’t the most pleasant experience. You’ll have to be quite persistent to get a replacement from this company.

So when you get your boat, test it right away.

Overall, it’s good to remember how much you are paying for this boat. You can’t pay the price of an entry-level boat and expect a yacht.

By now, you get what the Intex Excursion 5 is about. It isn’t top-of-the-line quality, but it also doesn’t cost much at all.

If you’re willing to spend more for extra quality, you can check out brands like ALEKO . Their boats, such as the BT320HU below, were made to last. This boat is heavy-duty all-round. It even has an aluminum floor for extra strength and stability. Plus, it’s big enough to carry 4 people, so you can bring everyone along.

When you take all things into consideration, it’s not hard to see why the Intex Excursion 5 is such a popular boat.

Intex Excursion 5 Key Features

Material/construction.

When you order a Intex Excursion 5, you’ll notice that it comes with a few other pieces of equipment.

This includes two aluminum oars. There’s been a lot of discussion around how good these actually are, with some customers claiming they never lasted very long, whilst others mentioned they did the job just fine.

However, if you’re planning on paddling around casually in an area without any wind or current, you’ll probably be able to use these without any issues.

The boat itself is made from vinyl and triple-layered heavy duty PVC. The inflated part shouldn’t puncture easily, although it’s always important to take care of your boat and avoid dragging it over rocks or anything that might scuff it.

There are three separate air chambers, so if one does get damaged you won’t be totally, um, up the creek without a paddle. You can also fix punctures easily with the repair kit which, like the oars, are included with the boat.

The layout of the boat is also good. If you get the four-person option you’ll have two two-person seats that face each other, both with backrests.

If you get the five-person option you have the same two two-person seats and a small bench in the middle.

With either choice, you’ll be able to move or remove the seats as you choose, which gives you the option to either bring more equipment or something much better, like a dog.

If you would like to use this boat for fishing, you have the option to with four fishing rod holders.

The only thing to take into consideration is that you won’t be able to stand up to cast. If you do this you will need somewhere to store the oars; thankfully, there are also oar holders so you don’t lose or trip over them.

Intex excursion 5 review

As we’ve discussed, this boat is made from vinyl and PVC. This will keep it pretty tough and durable for when you use it, and one review even claimed that it’s pretty much ‘puncture proof if used correctly’.

There are some concerns about the boat’s longevity, though, as the manufacturer only offers a guarantee for 30 days. We recommend inflating this as soon as you get it to make sure that there are no breakages from transportation.

The Intex Excursion 5 is an inflatable boat, which makes it lighter and easier to transport than many hard-shell boats.

It also means that it doesn’t weigh as much in the water, and can get blown off course or pushed around by currents. If you’re planning on fishing or staying in one place – possibly to watch or photograph some wildlife – it might be worth investing in an anchor.

A lot of customers like to modify this boat, and including an anchor is a good way to stay in place.

Ease of Use

So, the most obvious thing to think about when you’re considering buying an inflatable boat is how easy will it be to actually inflate?

The Intex Excursion 5 comes with a manual pump, which should get the boat from the box to the water in 15 minutes, or you can use an electric pump and halve the time.

Reviews have described the experience as ‘perfect for first-timers’, so don’t worry if you don’t have much experience with this.

Intex Quick-Fill DC Electric Car Air Pump, 12V

When you’re on the water you can paddle, although it can be quite awkward and the oars included are not quite long enough. You can either replace them or add a trolling or 1.5-2 outboard motor . If you do decide to do this you’ll move much faster and with far less effort.

Intex Motor Mount Kit for Intex inflatable Boats

After you’re done for the day, it can be difficult to actually get the boat back in the bag: much like a tent or a sleeping bag, these things are supposed to fit tightly. Some people like to separate out parts of the boat into different bags to make more space, or you can just fold the boat and squeeze.

Performance

There are a few important things to discuss about the boat’s performance. As we’ve mentioned, the Intex Excursion 5 is light and can get blown off course when you’re trying to stay in the same spot.

This can happen on still water, and unfortunately means that it’s not suitable for windy days, white water or the sea. However, if you like to fish in still lakes and you’re happy to add an anchor, or if you like to paddle around for a few hours in a calm area, this can still be a good boat.

Four-person: 4 people, with a total weight of 880lbsDimensions: 124” x 65” x 17”

Five-person: 5 people, with a total weight of 1320lbsDimensions: 144” x 66” x 17”

Intex Excursion 5 Pros & Cons

  • It’s good for fishing, and just casually splashing around. If you live near a river or lake and want to get out and enjoy it more, this is great. Grab some friends and go for a paddle, or take your children out, or even just with one or two buddies for some quiet fishing. It probably won’t last as long as a hard shell boat, but as it’s not particularly expensive (especially for a boat) it’ll perk up a summer and you can get a new in a few years.
  • You’ll probably need to get some different paddles, and it’s difficult to use this alone. To be fair, that’s not really what it’s designed for. Make sure you check the boat thoroughly for any damage each time you use it, and be aware that you can’t take this on any water (For example, fast flowing white water), which can be a bit restrictive.

Intex Excursion 5 Conclusion

Overall, we’re fans of the Intex Excursion 5. It’s a (reasonably) cheap and cheerful option that has actually had a good amount of thought and research put into it, and you should be able to get a decent amount of use.

So, if summer is coming soon or if it’s the depths of winter and you just want something to look forward to, this could easily be the center of some good days out.

They still uphold their belief in giving families the best leisure time of their lives, therefore making the inflatable boat larger and more durable, yet affordable.

  • Oar holders with oarlocks fixed to the boat
  • Grab-line that surrounds the boat
  • Inflatable floor for better comfort and rigidity
  • Grab handle on the bow
  • Motor mount fitting for trolling motor
  • Boston valves on the main chambers to facilitate fast inflating and deflating
  • Package includes:
  • Set of 54″ Aluminum oars

Design and Construction

The Intex Excursion is designed for large families that are always out for an adventure. The boat has many features that will tell you it is one of the best SIBs out there.

The dimensions of the inflatable boat are big enough for a 5-person capacity and do not overcrowd. It is even spacious enough to bring some gear for your next fishing activity.

The inflatable seats are located at both ends of the boat and are comfortable enough for lounging while waiting for that fish to catch. The seats are cozy and made for longer lounging. If you want to fit more gear or people on the boat, you can easily remove the seats, especially the extra set in the middle.

The 360-degree grab line is close enough for grabbing along with the four grab handles. The fishing rod holders are put on the sides of the two seats for easy grabbing. The oar holders are built-in so that the oars will not easily slip through the boat when not in use.

Along with the inflatable boat is the inflatable floor that provides comfort and rigidity despite being air-based. It will enable you to balance well on the boat while freely moving.

The boat has two main chambers that have Boston valves to inflate and deflate it quickly. With the Boston valves, you don’t need to worry about air escaping when pumping.

There are fittings for a motor mount at the stern of the boat in case you want to attach a motor for a speed boat feel.

With the size of Excursion 5, you would be shocked to know that it is lightweight and easy to carry. The 50-lb inflatable boat can easily be transported with its lightweight feature and carry bag whenever it’s deflated.

Intex only produces the best and highest quality products. With Excursion 5, it is made with two layers of extremely durable PVC vinyl material topped with a polyester layer. That is why the boat would still get unscathed after some long dragging and bumping on the rocks.

One of the things that the Excursion 5 boasts is its comfortability. Since it is mainly a fishing boat, you have to consider that the users would lounge on the boat for a longer period. The massive size of the boat makes it even spacious that you can bring some gear with you. You can also carry four more people along with your equipment and have a total weight capacity of fewer than 1000 lbs.

Accessories

When you purchase an Excursion 5, you do not only get the inflatable boat, and you also get many freebies. You will have two 54-inch aluminum oars and four oarlocks on each side of the boat to lock your oars when not in use. It also has four built-in fishing rods attached on each side of the boat for a more accessible fishing experience.

If you are worried about where to store your belongings, the inflatable boat has a storage pouch in the middle to hold your small accessories.

Excursion 5 also has a manual pump that can inflate it in about 15 minutes. Along with the pump is the carry bag where you can store your boat after deflation.

You will also have a repair kit that will save your life in case of a minor problem. With the kit, you can quickly fix it up in no time.

Transportation

Since the inflatable boat is big, you will think that it is tough to transport. But because of the 360-degree grab line of the boat, you can quickly grab it. Also, with the grab line, you can easily carry the boat from your vehicle to your desired area.

Excursion 5 is also lightweight. It only weighs 56.7 pounds despite carrying up to 1000 lbs of weight. Also, carrying your boat when deflated is easy because of the carry bag included in the package. Once deflated, you can fold the vessel to its desired shape and put it inside the bag, and then you are ready to go.

Storage and Maintenance

Storing your inflatable boat is an easy task since you can quickly deflate it with the help of the Boston valves. Before storing your Excursion 5, make sure that you wipe it clean and dry with a microfiber cloth. Any water droplet on the boat can be a home to mildew or molds once it is stored. After wiping, deflate it entirely, fold it to its desired shape, and then put it inside the carry bag along with its other accessories.

With a simple inflatable boat like the Excursion 5, maintenance is as easy as 1-2-3. Know if there holes on the boat by simply inflating it in a solemn place then listen to the leak. If you hear any hiss and see where the area is, you just did an excellent job. But if listening is not effective for you, then make a soap solution and spray it to the significant areas of the boat. Once you see bubbles coming out, then that is where the leak is. From there, you can now patch the holes using the repair kit included in the package.

  • Spacious and big
  • Comes with two paddles
  • Has motor mount fittings
  • Capacity is up to 1000 lbs
  • NMMA and TUV certified
  • The lightweight feature of the boat can easily drift away
  • You can feel the waves underneath because of the soft floor
  • Short paddles for a big inflatable boat

Modifications to the Excursion 5

One of the best features of many products is the availability of innovations for its parts and other accessories. As for the Excursion 5, the boat has several modifications along with its history. Some of the alterations of the inflatable boat are the following:

Trolling Motor

As mentioned above, the inflatable boat has a motor mount fitting on its stern, and there is a good reason for that. You can mount a trolling motor at the stern for those who love a little more adventure on the Excursion 5. All you need is a trolling motor, a battery, and a battery box, and you’re ready to go.

The motor can easily attach to the boat’s motor mount and can easily be navigated if you don’t like to row your boat on your next fishing trip. You can connect motors that can run up to 5mph enough to navigate and maneuver your boat.

You could also attach a gasoline-powered motor to the inflatable boat. But, you have to remember that it can only run to 5 mph. The best motor for the Excursion 5 has a 1.5 HP maximum.

One thing that you have to remember is that you need to get your boat registered once you attach a trolling motor to it.

A canopy is just what you need on the hot summer day while lounging on your Excursion 5. The canopy can easily be attached to the boat and will do an excellent job of protecting you from the harsh sun rays and still have a durable stand.

The canopy meant for the Excursion 5 is also made with the same PVC material and durable polyester. The stand of the canopy is made with aluminum tubing, which makes it sturdy and rigid.

To store the canopy, simply fold it and keep it inside the boat.

The inflatable boat has soft flooring that is still rigid enough for any movements. But if you want to turn it into a real fishing boat, you can build a sturdy hard floor where you can balance and stand.

Building a DIY hard floor may not be too easy, but it is doable. You just need to prepare a drop cloth, plywood, primer-sealer, anti-slip floor paint, and some outdoor carpet for a less slippery floor. You would need a foam tube insulator for the edges to protect the boat from the hard floorboard. After preparing all the required materials, all you have to do is use those handyman skills for good use and have an excellent hard floor.

Swivel Chairs

If you already built a hard floor for your boat and want a chair that can go with it, you can try installing swivel chairs. With the chairs, you will have a whole new level of fishing experience.

Some people install swivel chairs that have folding backs and attach the chairs directly to the hard floor. Although this will need a good set of carpentry hands, you will not regret having this modification on your Excursion 5.

Supply Boxes

To complete your fishing trip experience, you need to have a good supply box for your gear and other fishing supplies. If you already have a hard floor, installing the boxes would be easier. You can even put a swivel chair above the boxes.

The Intex History

You might already come across the brand, Intex, if you love going outdoors and into the water. Many of the inflatable boats, airbeds, and above ground pools nowadays are from the very well known, Intex Recreation Corp. But the company did not start with those big products before they became well-known.

Over 40 years ago, Intex developed its first inflatable product, which is the beach ball. They always knew that recreation and inflatables would be their path to success. In 1997, they developed the first above ground swimming pool, which is loved by many in today’s time. Now, they are home to airbeds, air furniture, floats and toys, pumps, spas, and sporting goods like the inflatable boats.

Their main objective was to always provide the highest quality products at affordable prices designed for comfort and fun. They are also proud to be a leading company serving more than 100 countries around the world.

Aside from their objective of giving the best products to their customers, Intex is also committed to their corporate social responsibility. They believe that reducing the number of fossil fuels can make a significant impact on the rehabilitation of the world, which is why they worked hand-in-hand with their suppliers.

There is no questioning the durability and usage of the Intex Excursion 5. It can compete with other brands with its quality, performance, design, and price. With the high-quality Intex products, you will have an excellent value for your money, especially with the Excursion 5.

The reason why Excursion 5 is one of the most popular inflatable boats in the market is its ample space and comfortability. At a very affordable price, you can already have the best family time outdoors.

Because of the simplicity of the inflatable boat, you can make many modifications to increase its usability and versatility. Overall, the Intex Excursion 5 will give you great outdoor experience with its features, durable build, and affordability.

  • The Inflatable Floor, adding to the comfort and rigidity of the boat
  • Motor Mount Fitting
  • Oar Locks and Oar Holders that are fixed onto the boat
  • Boston Valves on the two main chambers to speed up the inflating and deflating processes

Who is the Excursion 5 Best For?

Anyone looking for a fun, easy-going time on the water will enjoy the Excursion 5. It’s easy to set up, and it only takes a few minutes to inflate and get into the water.

The 1,000 pound max load that the Excursion 5 can support along with the four built-in fishing rod holders makes this a great option for a fisherman who wants to get out and spend the day on the water.

If relaxing is your main goal, it’s probably a good idea to buy a small trolling motor. The built-in motor fitting is perfect for those who don’t want to deal with rowing the Excursion 5.

One thing to note, is that this isn’t the boat for adrenaline junkies and speed freaks. Even with the trolling motor on, the Intex Excursion 5 will only travel at a leisurely speed of about 5mph. Also, if you’re looking for something that was designed for more longterm durability, we would recommend Intex’s Mariner 4 inflatable boat .

However, the ease of setting up and the relatively small size of the Excursion 5 when packed makes it absolutely perfect for those who want a hassle-free, inexpensive way to spend some time on the water.

What’s Included

Intex Excursion 5 Accessories

Also, all Intex boats are backed by a 30 day warranty. We would really love to see Intex’s warranty extended to at least a year.

I want to mount an outboard motor on the Intex Excursion 5. What is the recommended motor size? An outboard motor like a trolling motor or 2 HP gas motor will work. Anything larger than that is not recommended.

Can I repair the Excursion 5 myself if it develops an air leak? Small pinhole leaks and punctures are easily patched, but repairs to holes larger than 2 inches is discouraged by Intex for safety reasons.

Do I need to register the Excursion 5? Yes, it would definitely need to be registered if you’re going to put a motor on.

How do I get a Certificate of Origin to register the boat? Contact Intex and provide them with the boat’s Hull Identification Number, found on the bottom of the capacity label at the boat’s stern.

Can you turn the seats around to face in the same direction instead of each other? No, the seats are fixed. The mounts built in for them don’t allow for either seat to be turned around. You can take them out entirely, however.

How long does it take to inflate the Excursion 5? The boat takes about 15 minutes or so to inflate with the manual pump (included). An electric pump will do the same job in five to ten minutes.

Can a single person row the Intex Excursion 5? Yes it’s possible, although it’s not easy due to the boat’s shape. If you’re planning to go out alone, it is probably a good idea to invest in a small outboard motor. Also, if you don’t necessarily need a boat as big as the Excursion 5, we recommend checking out the smaller Intex Excursion 4 .

How many people can I take fishing with me? Given the gear and tackle you’d have to take along, the Intex Excursion 5 will be able to take two or three fishermen comfortably.

Final Thoughts

Intex Excursion 5 Inflatable Boat

The Excursion 5 is perfect for a leisurely row on the lake or relaxing with friends on a lazy afternoon. Since the seats face each other, it’s perfect for those old-fashioned, face-to-face conversations people seem to be missing in their hectic, tech-driven modern lives.

With the Excursion 5, Intex has gone out of their way to make things as relaxed and comfortable as possible. The inflatable floor is there to stabilize the boat, but also to add comfort for passengers who don’t have a seat. There are carry lines and a handle to make the boat easy to carry, and it’s light enough for anyone to transport.

The Intex Excursion 5 gives the owner peace-of-mind as it is constructed out of a thick PVC vinyl skin. Even if it springs a leak, the boat sports three air chambers, so a single puncture won’t sink the boat.

If you really make the Excursion 5 boating experience completely effort free, you’ll want to invest in a small outboard motor and an electric pump to cut down on the effort that comes with inflating and rowing the boat. The Excursion 5 comes with a motor mount fitting, so you’ll have no trouble installing a motor.

Overall, the Intex Excursion 5 is fun, cheap, and portable — making it a good boat for budget-minded recreational users.

Intex Excursion 5 opinion

This boat is a comfortable SIB for a weekend getaway on the lake. It has plenty of room for families looking for a relaxing time, as well as hobby fisherman. The Excursion 5 has several modding possibilities, like attaching a motor, a canopy, or even building a hard floor.

  • Customer reviews on Amazon
  • Excursion 5 review

The Intex Excursion family of boats are definitely among the most popular boats on the market. The Excursion 5 is among the biggest boats you can find.

I had a chance to use one on the lake a while back, and think the Excursion 5 makes an excellent vessel for large families that are trying to find a portable and price-friendly boat for a summer outing on the lake.

The following is a review of the Excursion 5, in which I’ll give you valuable insight into the features, specifications, and overall qualities that this raft offers on the water.

Features of the boat

Being a rather large and feature packed SIB, there are a lot of things to talk about. Let’s start with a summary of the pros and cons of the Excursion.

Let’s begin by considering the level of comfort that the Intex Excursion 5 offers.

As the name suggests, the official capacity of the boat is 5 people , or 1320 lbs. I would say that there is ample room to comfortably accommodate four adults. It measures 12 feet in length and 5.5 feet in width, so it is huge. If this size seems too big for you but you like the features of the boat, Intex makes a smaller version called Excursion 4 .

Inex Excursion 5 Vs Average Person Size

There are two inflatable seats that are located on both ends of the boat, equipped with backrests for comfortable sitting.  The seats feel cozy, especially when you consider that you are in an inflatable boat. This is a convenient feature for anybody planning to spend a long time in the water.

Excursion 5 Seat

You are also able to remove them entirely if you want more space and have 4 adults in the boat at the same time. Especially if you want to bring extra things, like a cooler. The seats are comfortable, but take up a lot of space.

There is an extra inflatable seat in the middle, but I always remove that one because it sort of gets in the way.

Accessories

The Excursion 5 features 4 built-in fishing rod holders that make it perfect for a hobby fishing expedition. You can comfortably bring aboard two of your fishing buddies when going for a boating trip, as well as fit in bait and tackle boxes. Mind you, this boat is not a full-fledged fishing vessel, so don’t expect to stand up in it while fishing.

Intex Excursion 5 review - A day on the water 1

You’ll also find a pair of 54″ aluminum oars that you can use for paddling. The oars hook into their holders smoothly. There are actually 4 welded-on oar locks, so you can row the boat from either end. The oar locks are very basic though.

By the way, the boat has oar holders on the side, so you have somewhere to store the oars when you’re not using them.

You also get a manual pump (Intex Double Quick II High-Output Hand Pump) that you can use to inflate the boat fully in about 15 minutes. The main tubes have Boston Valves, so you can get a lot of air in pretty fast (and out when deflating).

Of course, getting an electric pump makes inflating/deflating a lot quicker and easier. Here are the pumps I have used and can recommend.

The package also includes a carry bag, so you basically get everything you’ll need for an outdoor adventure.

Transportation

Just because the boat is big, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is challenging to carry and move around with when inflated

On the contrary.

The boat features an all-around grab line, which allows you to hoist the vessel from the car to the water and vice versa with very little hardship. Don’t forget that the boat weighs an unbelievably low 44 pounds, which is quite impressive given that its weight limit is 1,320 pounds.

The grab line around the boat makes it easy to carry the boat and can serve as a safety feature: you can grab it if somebody goes overboard.

This inflatable boat is manufactured using top-of-the-range, durable PVC vinyl. This gives it a sturdy build that is said to be totally puncture-proof if used sensibly.

The design features two layers of PVC vinyl to go with one polyester layer. Whether you scratch it against a rock when dragging it down to the river or along the beach, you can trust that it will come out unharmed and undamaged.

All Intex boats come with a 30-day warranty , which is not much.

Even though these boats have a low price, they are usually good quality and provide good value for money.

BUT being priced this low means that a few of the boats will have manufacturing defects. Not all, just a few.

This is why it is important to inflate the boat at home right after it arrives, and keep it inflated for a few days. You only have a 30-day warranty, so don’t run out of this time window.

If the boat stays inflated (which it probably will), you’re golden. If you notice a leak, send it back and get a new one.

Specifications

Here is a nice table of all you need to know about the Intex Excursion 5.

Who is the boat best for?

For anybody looking to spend some quality and relaxed moments on the lake, the Excursion 5 will prove to be the perfect vessel. The setup is quite easy and it will only take you a short while to inflate it and put it on the lake.

The Excursion 5 can hold a maximum load of 1,320 pounds and has ample room for a family of 4-5 people .

Two adults and their kids will fit comfortably, but 4-5 adults would be crammed.

It comes with 2 pairs of built-in fishing rod holders, making it the ideal option for hobby fishermen who are looking to get on the water and enjoy a relaxing day of fishing in an affordable inflatable boat. Keep in mind that the boat has a soft floor, so you can’t stand in it and cast. You would need to build a hard floor to be able to do that.

Intex Excursion 5 modifications

The Excursion 5 offers a lot of modding possibilities.

  • Trolling motor

For those who just want to enjoy an easy-going boating experience, pairing the Excursion 5 with an electric trolling motor is a great way to go.

Things you’ll need:

  • Intex motor mount ( here it is on Amazon )
  • Battery box (power center)

I discuss optimal motor + battery pairings specifically for Intex boats in this article .

Intex Excursion 5 review - A day on the water 2

The motor easily attaches to the Excursion 5s motor mount, saving you the trouble of having to row the boat while in the water. And even with the motor attached, your vessel will still be able to move at an easy 5mph.

You could even attach a gasoline-powered motor to the Excursion 5, just not a strong one, otherwise, you might damage the boat. Intex recommends a max 1.5 HP outboard motor.

An important thing to note is that you’ll probably need to have your boat registered if you decide to attach the motor.

Adding a canopy (bimini) over the Excursion 5 can make your time out on the water much more comfortable on a hot, sunny day.

intex-excursion-5-canopy

A canopy can easily be fastened to the boat and will do a good job of offering protection from elements like harmful UV rays, or even downpours that catch you unprepared.

You can buy a canopy best suited for the Intex 5 that has a similar build of durable polyester coated with PVC, featuring aluminum tubing that makes it even sturdier. Once you’re done with using the canopy, simply fold it and keep it inside the boat.

Here is a guide on installing a canopy .

If you have a bit of time on your hands, the Excursion 5 is a great boat to build a DIY hard floor for.

intex-excursion-5-floor

This is a very popular mod for the Excursion 5, since it can turn the boat into a sensibly priced fishing boat. You’ll even be able to stand up in the boat while casting.

I have a complete guide on how to build a hard floor here .

Swivel chairs

If you do build a hard floor and want something more functional that would make a great alternative to inflatable chairs fastened to the floor of the boat, you can try installing swivel chairs.

intex-excursion-5-chair-mod

These would make a fishing trip even better.

You’ll find a lot of people installing a pair of swivel chairs that have folding backs to their Excursion by simply bolting the seats into tiny plywood pieces on the floor. Of course, this will require handyman skills and a bit of effort and improvisation.

All in all, having a pair of raised chairs on your boat that can spin is definitely worth the trouble.

Supply boxes

If you have a hard floor, you can build boxes to store your supplies in.

You can even put a swivel chair on top of the boxes, so you have an elevated view of the water.

Excursion 4 vs 5

The Intex Excursion 4 is a smaller version of the 5 version. Here are 2 photos comparing their length.

Excursion 4

Intex Excursion 4 Top

Excursion 5

Intex Excursion 5 Top.jpg

And here are the exact specifications of each boat for comparison.

The most notable differences in specs and features between the Excursion 4 and 5 are the following:

  • 4 person vs 5 person capacity
  • The Excursion 4 is shorter by 20 inches, and narrower by 1 inch.
  • The Excursion 4 has 2 fishing rod holders instead of 4 on the Excursion 5.
  • The Excursion 4 has 2 (front and rear) seats, while the Excursion 5 has an inflatable middle row seat.

Other than these, the 2 boats are identical in terms of build and accessories as well.

Note that the Excursion 4 is only narrower by 1 inch, which is negligible. The Excursion 4 will actually fit 4 people, it is a very wide boat.

The manufacturer: Intex

The name of the company that makes the Excursion is Intex . The company was founded in 1997, and has grown to sell its products in over 100 countries. It is based out of California.

intex-logo

The company makes all sorts of inflatable products, from air beds to pools to toys to boats.

They do provide support for their products, which is good to know and provides peace of mind. You can even buy replacements part directly on their site. So in case you lose the Boston valve or the fishing rod sleeve, you can order replacements from Intex.

Is there a recommended motor size for the Excursion 5? You can attach any electric trolling motor, or a gasoline power up to 2 HP. Attaching a motor which is too strong will damage the boat.

An outboard motor like a trolling motor or 2 HP gas motor will work. Anything larger than that is not recommended.

What happens if the boat develops a leak? Small holes are easy to fix using the patch kit which is included. You should also read my article on how to find and fix air leaks .

Does the Excursion 5 need to be registered with the local authorities? If you put a motor on the boat, it probably needs to be registered. Here is a guide for all US states. You will need to contact Intex to get a Certificate of Origin for your boat as well. Have your Hull ID Number ready when contacting them.

Is it possible to face all the seats forward, instead of them facing each other? Unfortunately not, the seat mounts are fixed. You can take either seat out, but that’s about it. What I would do is keep the rear seat in, and take the front seat out.

Does it take long to inflate the boat? The Excursion 5 will take about 15 minutes to inflate with included the manual pump. If that’s too long, you can get an electric pump which will do it in 7 minutes.

Is it possible for a single person to row the Excursion 5? It is possible, yes. Daddy does the rowing, while the family sits back and relaxes. But if you plan on using it alone for fishing, you should definitely get an outboard motor or a smaller boat, maybe the Excursion 4.

Can I go whitewater rafting with the Excursion 5? You can go river boating, but not on whitewater. This boat is meant for relaxing in the sun, or light fishing trips.

Can I go fishing with the Intex Excursion? If you are looking for an inflatable fishing boat on a budget, the Excursion 5 is a good choice. Many fisherman choose it and convert it to a full-fledged fishing boat, since it is of good size and stability for fishing. You should build a hard floor for it, to make it stable to stand on as well.

With a hard floor in place, you can even add swiveling fishing chairs.

Here is a list of pages/documents you will find useful if you are considering this boat:

Final opinion of the Excursion 5

When you combine all the onboard features, extra mods, and upgrades, as well as the boat’s durable build, you’ll realize that the Excursion 5 is a great recreational vessel for boaters on a budget. It is made using a thick PVC vinyl material and features three air chambers that keep it from sinking if it is punctured.

When it comes to spending quality and exciting time on the lake affordably, the Excursion 5 gets a solid A, thanks to its numerous features and low price. This boat will provide you with some well-deserved relaxation time on the lake or river, although it wasn’t designed for raging waters.

I liked it so much, I had to put it on the list of the best inflatable rafts you can buy.

Intex Excursion 5

Fine entry-level inflatable

This inflatable raft has a lot of features, is large enough for families and fishermen, and can support a large payload. I like it!

Intex Excursion 5 inflatable boat Review – Pros, Cons, Complete Guide

intex excursion 5 boat with jet motor

Imagine a day filled with gentle waves, the smell of fresh water, a fishing rod in hand, and the comforting presence of your favorite people. That’s precisely the day I experienced with the Intex Excursion™ 5.

excursion 5 on river with storage

At first glance, I was taken by how lightweight and compact this 5-person capacity boat was. But don’t let its size fool you; the boat screams durability and quality. The rugged vinyl construction promises longevity, ensuring that the boat will weather through multiple summers of fun-filled adventures.

Setting it up was incredibly straightforward, thanks to the Boston valve on the two main hull chambers. Inflating and deflating this boat was both a quick and easy process. The 3 air chambers – especially the auxiliary chamber in the hull – instilled a sense of safety in me. The knowledge that the inner auxiliary chamber alone could keep us afloat if the need arose was truly reassuring.

The Inflatable I-Beam floor was a revelation. It provided the right balance between comfort and rigidity, ensuring we could move around with ease without compromising the boat’s stability. And speaking of comfort, the two roomy inflatable seats with backrests made those long hours on the water so much more enjoyable.

intex excursion 5 boat with jet motor

For the fishing enthusiasts, including myself, the four fishing rod holders were an excellent addition, turning our boating adventure into a fulfilling fishing trip. The gear pouch came in handy, ensuring our essentials remained close, yet out of the way.

The boat’s design is so user-friendly; with grab handles on both sides of the bow and the all-around grab line, getting in and out of the boat was a breeze. And if you’re looking at more extended excursions, the boat is equipped with motor mount fittings, making it versatile for both manual rowing and motored adventures.

One of my favorite things was the inclusion of the 54in Aluminum Oars and the High-Output Pump. These accessories truly elevated our boating experience, ensuring we had everything we needed to kick-start our day on the water.

Safety is paramount, and knowing that this boat is TUV approved and meets the ISO 6185-1 NMMA-ABYC standards gave me peace of mind. Plus, the U.S. Coast Card I.D. is a testament to its quality and safety features.

The Intex Excursion™ 5 is more than just an inflatable boat; it’s the promise of unforgettable summer days filled with adventure, laughter, and cherished memories. Whether you’re fishing, camping, or simply cruising on a sunlit lake, this boat is a trusty companion that guarantees fun and safety. From its design to its features, it’s clear that every aspect has been crafted keeping the user in mind. If you’re looking to make the most of this summer, set sail with the Intex Excursion™ 5. You won’t be disappointed.

Excursion 5 setup

airblown raft intex excursion 5

Assembling the Intex Excursion™ 5 inflatable boat was more straightforward than I anticipated. With the inclusion of a high-output manual hand pump, it took us only about 10-15 minutes to have it fully inflated and ready for use. Rolling it back up and fitting everything into the carry bag also proved to be simple with a bit of practice.

Comfort was noteworthy in this boat. The two inflatable seats equipped with backrests provided surprising support and relaxation. There was ample space that easily accommodated myself, my wife, and our three kids aged under 10; making it seem like we could have even added another adult comfortably.

Now, talking about stability, we tested the waters in several conditions – venturing on still lakes to more adventurous trips down shallow areas of rivers filled with rocks and logs. What amazed us was this boat’s ability to withstand multiple terrains without showing signs of injury or puncture! This rugged vinyl beast earned my trust after those extreme trips.

Maneuverability is something that truly stands out for me. The welded oar locks alongside their appropriate holders greatly enhanced my paddling experience giving me control even though at times I struggled since I had a shoulder surgery couple years back. However, adding a motor mount might be beneficial for longer rides or if you prefer less manual work.

And despite being roomy enough for a family outing, this raft was easy to navigate and glided smoothly on water – regardless if we were going downstream in low water points or trying to paddle against current in narrow river bends. Overall, navigating through different waterways felt effortless thanks to its design and thoughtful feature implementations.

Durability and Performance

excursion 5 boat and motor

I was truly impressed by the durability of the Intex Excursion™ 5. We took this inflatable boat on couple Yosemite float trips and despite journeying over shallow regions with several rocky terrains and logs scattered, it displayed significant resistance to punctures. The rugged vinyl construction certainly gives it an edge when compared to other less expensive rafts that we’ve tried, which just didn’t hold up as well.

Throughout our adventures, we were accompanied by friends who had a Mariner 4’s and 3’s raft. We got an opportunity to spend time on their boats as well – overall, while Excursion 5 lacked certain features like a ribbed floor insert or the ability to place paddles parallel while attached, it made up for it in terms of sheer capacity and toughness.

Now, let’s talk about the performance with added accessories – particularly the trolling motor. Installing Minn Kota Endura C2 40 proved to be beneficial in terms of propulsion when compared to mere paddling, especially during upstream travels in moderate river current. It presented us with varying speeds and conveniently operated at 30lbs thrust for most parts unless confronted with stronger currents where we cranked it up to its full capacity.

Pricing Valuation and Availability

The price of the Intex Excursion™ 5 inflatable boat is $279 US dollars. In pounds, it would be approximately £208 (based on current exchange rates). In Australian dollars, it would be around AUD 383 (based on current exchange rates). Please note that exchange rates may fluctuate, so it’s always a good idea to check for the most up-to-date prices.

Intex excursion 5 features and Spec details

Accessories and modifications.

intex excursion 5 4hp trolling motor

From my experience with the Intex Excursion™ 5, I would highly recommend some accessories and modifications to get the most out of your boating trips. A top suggestion would be to add a trolling motor. I got the Minn Kota Endura C2 40 with 40lbs of thrust. The power was ample, but to manage battery usage better, you may want to consider a battery holder like the Minnkota Trolling Motor Power Center.

Also, if you plan on fishing or simply anchoring down in one spot on the water for a while, an anchor such as the Kwik Tek A-2 comes in handy more times than you’d think.

In terms of modifications, there were two main adjustments that significantly improved my user experience. The first was fabricating a solid floor. I picked up some plywood from Home Depot and custom cut it to fit the bottom of my boat. It provided a stable platform and sturdy floor compared to the standard inflatable one, especially over several outings.

Another modification was getting stadium seats for comfort since paddling can become uncomfortable after hours on waters. This addition added much-needed back-support that doesn’t come with inflatable seats.

Bear in mind though, these enhancements will bump up your overall expense but believe me when I say they stand as valuable investments contributing largely towards enriching experiences while navigating through tranquil or even mildly choppy waters!

A third valuable modification was the implementation of tarps. Inflating the boat on land using a tarp underneath ensured no accidental punctures occurred. Not only that, I also used those tarps to keep my plywood boards dry and clean when we were out in the water.

For those who love fishing, another accessory worth considering is extra fishing rod holders. Although the boat already comes with built-in holders, if you’re seriously into fishing or perhaps have multiple people wanting to fish at once, then additional rod holders can prove very useful.

Also, adapting Overton’s Adult Boating Vest Four Pack ensures everyone on board adheres to safety protocols while adding a splash of color to your adventure group. And if the original carry bag breaks, I learned from other fellow boaters that a fake xmas tree carry bag can come in quite handy as it perfectly fits this large inflatable.

Lastly, be mindful of the ambient temperature and time of day when inflating the boat. This will determine how much it will inflate and soften across different times of the day and prevent over or under inflation.

From my experiences, these added accessories and alterations considerably amplified our family trips’ joyous moments and shall continue to do so!

Minor Issues and Considerations

While my experiences with the Intex Excursion™ 5 have mostly been positive, I have encountered a few minor issues and considerations worthy of mention.

Firstly, when using the trolling motor at higher settings, I noticed a bit of instability. The motor tends to bend the support moldings, causing it to tuck slightly under the boat, especially when set high. This doesn’t seem to do any major damage but nonetheless gave me some initial concerns. Yet, once I familiarized myself with the product, drawing up the motor helped curb this issue substantially.

Next on my list is to be mindful of temperature variations when inflating and deflating. On hot days, air inside the boat expands past its original measurement and conversely softens as the day cools down. It’s crucial to adjust inflation levels depending on whether you launch in the morning or at noon – but no worries too much about this, as you don’t necessarily need to make adjustments once inflated unless circumstances demand it.

Lastly, something this boat could benefit from is a shading system. On blazing days out on open water having some sort of umbrella or canopy could provide much-needed respite from the sun for those aboard – still brainstorming on a DIY solution for this addition!

While these points by no means deterred me from enjoying outings on this inflatable, they are elements worth considering or addressing for an even smoother experience for potential buyers like yourself. But judging from my own experience and that of others within my circle – this raft lives up pretty well to its promise of delivering a pleasant aquatic adventure!

Customer Reviews and Ratings

The Intex Excursion™ 5 inflatable boat has received high praises from numerous users. I will recount some of the testimonials and reviews that have been shared based on personal experiences:

David gave the boat a full 5 out of 5 stars, stating that it was perfect for his Yosemite float trips. In his experience, the inflatable boat was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate himself, his wife, and their three children under ten years old without any concerns about punctures even with several encounters with rocks and logs in shallow areas.

Another user named Charles S also rated the boat highly, specifically impressed by its durability. When testing it over two Yosemite float trips, he discovered that it can take quite an abuse; handling shallow waters and rocky terrains very well when compared to lesser-priced rafts previously owned.

A reviewer named Charles S highlighted some of the boat’s most appealing features but also noted a few downsides. He mentioned the studier ribbed floor insert and paddle positioning benefit offered by Mariner series making them more preferable as long as you don’t require extra room.

On other hand, for David it was worth every penny spent – praising specifically how easily he could set it up and deflate the raft aside from surprising toughness against potential wear-and-tear situations in varied water conditions.

These testimonies give us an informative account of what new users can expect with their Intex Excursion™ 5 purchase. By considering these accounts alongside your own needs and preferences, you’ll have all the insights required to decide whether this product fits your bill to perfection or not!

Maintenance

Maintaining the Intex Excursion™ 5 inflatable boat is crucial to ensure its longevity and continued optimal performance. Here are some maintenance tips based on my personal experience:

  • Cleaning: After each use, I recommend thoroughly rinsing the boat with fresh water to remove any dirt, sand, or saltwater residue. Using a mild soap solution, gently scrub away any stubborn stains or debris. Be sure to rinse off all the soap and allow the boat to air dry completely before storing it.
  • Drying and Deflation: Properly drying and deflating the boat is essential to prevent mold or mildew growth. After cleaning, deflate the boat completely, removing as much air as possible. Wipe down the boat with a clean cloth to remove any excess moisture before letting it air dry completely in a shaded area.
  • Inspections: Regularly inspect the boat for any signs of wear, tear, or damage. Check for punctures, leaks, or worn-out areas that might require patching or repair. If you notice any damages, address them promptly using the repair patch provided or seek professional repairs if needed.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the deflated and cleaned boat in a dry, cool location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing it in places where sharp objects could potentially cause punctures or damage.
  • Air Chambers: Before every use, inflate the boat’s air chambers to their recommended capacity and check for any leaks or loss of air pressure during inflation. If needed, add more air to maintain proper inflation levels.
  • Accessories: Inspect and maintain accessories such as oars, motor mount fittings, and any additional equipment regularly. Ensure they are securely attached and functioning properly.
  • Safe Handling: Always follow safety guidelines and regulations while handling your inflatable boat. Be mindful of weight limitations and distribute weight evenly to maintain stability and prevent strain on the boat.

In winding up, my review for the Intex Excursion™ 5 inflatable boat is mostly positive. I can testify to its substantial capacity, making it an excellent choice for a day out on the water with a group or family. Its three air chambers help provide additional buoyancy, giving me a sense of security when I’m out on the lake with my little ones.

Contrary to some concerns about durability that usually plague inflatable boats, I can vouch for its resistant vinyl construction. From experiences floating over rocky areas and logs in shallow rivers to riding high current areas – this one stood the test and endured everything thrown at it without any sign of puncture.

When it comes to performance, especially if you prefer less manual interventions like myself, adding a trolling motor transforms your cruising experience entirely; however, their stability at high thrust levels might need some improved attention.

I did make some modifications of my own for enhanced comfort. Installing tarps to keep things dry, a sturdy floor for superior grip and balance as well applying stadium seats added layers of relief during long hours on waters.

On the minor side of things, one needs to be careful with temperature variations while inflating and deflating – a parameter often overlooked but worth noting. I am yet to figure out an effective shading system so that’s something on my future agenda for hot days in open water.

Based on personal usage and also echoing the testimonials from other users such as David and Charles S – Intex Excursion™ 5 stands as an affordable raft that doesn’t compromise on quality or endurance aspects whatsoever!

So wrapping up, would I recommend this product? Absolutely! Whether you have yearly float trips planned or merely wish to enjoy peaceful fishing weekends or fun-filled water outings – Intex Excursion™ 5 makes for an enjoyable boating companion that’s both reliable and rewarding in my book.

Intex Excursion 5 Review

intex excursion 5

The Intex Excursion 5 is no doubt one of the biggest and most casual inflatable boats on the market right now.

We wanted to write an Intex Excursion 5 review to give you the lowdown on the specs, features, and overall excitement, that this inflatable boat provides for a day on the water. There’s no question about its popularity, as for the sheer size, it’s a very affordable inflatable boat.

The Intex Excursion 5 is an excellent option for larger families who are looking to get something portable and affordable out to the lake for the summer.

The Excursion 5 Review

excursion 5

Specifications

  • Tough PVC Vinyl Material
  • 1,000lb Weight Capacity
  • 53lbs. in Weight
  • 5-Person Capacity
  • Tons of room onboard
  • Very comfortable floor and seating
  • Plenty of available mods and upgrades
  • Can attach a motor mount if you want
  • Durable material
  • Easy to transport
  • Included oars aren’t the best quality
  • No quick release valve for floor

Features and Benefits

  comfort  .

Let’s talk about how comfortable the Intex 5 is first!

Not only does the amount of room in the boat allow for full-grown adults to lay flat end-to-end with ease, but the seats are also incredibly comfortable for sitting in, especially for an inflatable boat . The two fixed inflatable seats are located on each end of the boat and come complete with backrests for lumbar support.

This is very important if you’re spending hours on end in the water. If you want, you can also take them out entirely.

Built-in Accessories

The Intex Excursion 5 is excellent for fishing, as it comes with four built-in fishing rod holders. You could comfortably fit 2-3 fishermen on board with tackle boxes and bait. It also comes with two 54-inch aluminum oars that are great for recreational paddling. These oars easily hook into the oar holders that are fixed onto the sides of the boat. Lastly, you have a manual pump that, when in use, takes about 15 minutes to inflate the boat entirely. Much of this is thanks to the Boston Valves that are included on board.

 Transportation

Because the boat is big, you’d think it would be difficult to transport. Luckily, there’s an all-around grab line that makes carrying the boat from your vehicle to the water and back an absolute breeze. Not to mention the boat is only 44lbs, an unreal weight considering its 1000lb weight limit. The grab line not only makes it easier to carry but also adds an element of safety for anyone that might accidentally go overboard and need something to grab on to.

 Durability

The Intex Excursion 5 is crafted out of a high-quality and extremely durable PVC vinyl. This makes the craft completely puncture resistant. In full, there are two layers of this PVC vinyl and one layer of polyester. No matter if you’re dragging it along the beach to get it to the water or accidentally bump into a rock in the water, you’re boat should more than likely come out undamaged.

Accessories

For the simplicity of the Intex Excursion 4 , it actually comes packed with some pretty cool features.

If you’re looking to take this baby out for some good old fishin’, the two fishing rod holders will make your trip more convenient than ever, as you’ll be able to cast more lines than you have hands to do so. The Intex Excursion 4 also comes complete with a storage pouch to hold your small accessories like your phone and wallet, and also has four welded oar locks to keep the included 54-inch aluminum oars locked to the boat, even when they aren’t in use.

After all, no one wants to dive out of the boat into the depths of the murky lake to retrieve their only method of movement

Intex Excursion 5 Mods

Trolling motor.

If your ultimate goal is to kick back and relax, there’s no doubt that you should pair your Intex Excursion 5 with a trolling motor. The small motor that easily attaches to the Intex Excursion 5’s motor mount takes the hassle out of having to row your boat all day. Even with the Excursion 5 motor attached (considering the motor mount will only hold up to a 1.5HP motor), your boat will still only go about 5mph. One thing to note is that you will need to have your Excursion 5 registered if you decide to put the motor on.

Having a canopy on your Intex Excursion 5 can completely change your boating experience. They are very easy to fasten to your boat and can add tons of protection on your lake trip. Not only will a canopy protect you and your family from harmful UV rays, but it will also protect you and your gear in the case of a surprise rainstorm. The canopies that you can purchase for the Excursion 5 is constructed with the same durable PVC coated polyester as the boat, and have aluminum tubing that is just as sturdy. When you’re all done with your canopy, just fold it up and store it inside your boat.

 Swivel Chairs

If you want a little bit more versatility for your ride and are getting sick of the inflatable chairs that are fastened down to the boats ends, why not install some swivel chairs? Many people install two swivel chairs with folding backs to their Excursion 5s by bolting them into small pieces of plywood on the floors. Installing them will take a bit of effort and ingenuity, though having chairs that are raised and can spin is far worth it!

Frequently Asked Questions

Intex excursion 5 vs. mariner 4.

The main difference that you’ll notice is the size of the Mariner 4 vs. the size of the Excursion 5. The Mariner 4. At a weight capacity of 880lbs, the Mariner 4 has just about enough room for four people at a tight fit. While the Mariner 4 does come with inflatable seats, they, unfortunately, do not have backrests, making it slightly less comfortable than the Excursion 5. On the positive side, the Mariner 4 has rotating oarlocks installed, which make it much easier to maneuver through the water. It also has an inflatable keel that makes it much easier to maneuver as well. Besides those differences, the Excursion 5 and Mariner 4 share a lot of the same properties. Overall, we would recommend the Excursion 5 for larger families or those looking to relax, and the Mariner 4 for those looking to do some more serious boating.

What kinds of conditions does the Excursion 5 work best in?

The Excursion 5 excels on nice, calm summer days out on the lake. It’s great for large families or fishermen who have tons of gear to bring. You can easily row it on calmer rivers as well if the current isn’t too strong and it’s very comfortable to relax in. Seriously, this boat is all about relaxing. We would strongly recommend trying to take your Excursion 5 out in the waves, as the underside of the body is far too soft. This means every wave will be felt instead of being cut through. Not only does that make the boat incredibly uncomfortable, but it also makes it a huge pain to row.

How do you register your Intex Excursion 5 if you get a motor?

You’ll have to get in touch with the people over at Intex and give them the identification number that is located on the stern of the boat. If you find the capacity label, it is the number that is on the bottom.

Can you go out by yourself with the Intex Excursion 5?

You can definitely do it it just won’t be an easy or relaxing time. The boat is shaped wide and long, meaning it’ll be difficult to paddle and maneuver alone. If you’re planning on going alone, we would highly recommend getting an outboard motor to attach. Either that or check out a smaller boat such as the Intex Excursion 4.

Can I repair the Intex Excursion 5 by myself?

Any leaks or punctures that are smaller than 2 inches can easily be sealed up with the patch they provide. If your boat’s wound is larger, Intex recommends that you send it in for professional repair.

Overall Review

For an inexpensive and exciting time on the water, we have to give the Excursion 5 an A+.

If you’re looking for the ultimate inflatable boat that can provide some much-needed river relaxation, this is the one.

With the durable build, onboard features, and variety of additional mods and upgrades, the Intex Excursion 5 is perfect for recreational boaters with a budget in mind.

intex excursion 5 test

I’ve used this boat for fishing trips and as a dinghy to get back and forth between my sailboat and the shore.

After three years of experience with it, I know this raft quite well. This review hopefully will reflect that authority.

Where to buy:

Where to buy intex excursion 5:.

The Intex Excursion 5 is a spacious inflatable boat that has an attachment for a small motor.

We tested this while sailing–to get to land when on anchor–and on rivers and canals. We even went fishing and managed to catch a perch (not too big unfortunately).

This inflatable dinghy boat can accommodate up to 4 people on board. Moreover, it is made of sturdy vinyl. The vinyl can withstand sharp objects and other potentially deflating points of hindrance found by the shore during launch and landing.

The size of the boat requires a bit of effort and space to inflate. But once done and set in the water it’s surprisingly sturdy. That comes in handy when casting with a fishing rod and reeling in a catch.

All in all, the Excursion 5 is a dinghy that can comfortably accommodate 2/3 adults and 2 children. There are holes for another set of oars, but they aren’t included (unfortunately). There’s a transom system (sold separately) for a motor to speed up to 5 miles per hour or for trolling.

Putting a wood floor in is highly recommended if you plan on a trolling motor and fishing a lot. Just the inflated bottom is very unstable if you have to move around. Other then that? Good price for what you get, spacious, and pretty easy to launch.

Bradley Axmith

I have a neighbor at the marina that’s done this. He too says it works well. I can see how it would turn this inflatable into something a little more versatile.

Intex Excursion 5 Review 2024 – Inflatable Boat Set

  • Oliver Adler
  • March 14, 2022

Intex Excursion 5 Review

The Intex Excursion 5 is an amazing choice for an entry-level kayak for people who want to spend a lovely day on the water. The company is among the most popular manufacturers of beginner yaks that provide ultimate stability to the user and are worth investing in.

When it comes to finding an ideal inflatable yak or boat, the very first thought that crosses our mind is about a flimsy surface that is just good for the swimming pool but not for a river. However, our thoughts and expectations were completely altered when we saw the exception Excursion 5 because of the level of stability it offered to the user.

Even though this is an entry-level boat, it has a capacity of accommodating more than four people and it is made out of premium quality PVC material. The vinyl is heavy duty and thoroughly more durable as compared to most of the inflatable boats you commonly see. You can easily inflate this boat and set it up on water without even asking for help.

Intex did a lot of tweaking with this boat. They wanted to come up with a yak that is not just easy to set up but is also easy to store. Something that provides utmost convenience to the user and that is exactly what Excursion 5 provided all the beginner and intermediate level fishermen with.

Intex Excursion 5 kayakfeature

If you’re planning on buying this yak then chances are you’re looking for all the information you can gather before you spend your hard earned money. For that very purpose, we did our best to provide you with even the tiniest details of this boat so read on and see if it meets your eye or not.

Table of Contents

Features: Intex Excursion 5 Review

  • Length – 144 inches
  • Width – 66 inches
  • Weight – 57.40 lbs
  • Max Weight capacity – 1000 lbs

Overall Measurements and Construction

Well, you cannot deny that this yak is a huge boat that one rarely finds in the market for an affordable price point. The maximum seating capacity is five which is more than enough for taking your whole team on the venture.

However, Intex claims that this boat is well-capable of handling more than five people; we would suggest that you only take four people on it just to remain on the safe side. Along with four family members or friends, you can also take a child with you and all the gear that is needed to make an excellent paddling and fishing adventure.

The boat is very spacious and once you have inflated it, you will easily figure out how many people the yak can easily accommodate.

High Quality

The boat is made up of premium quality vinyl as mentioned before. Whenever someone is buying an inflatable board, the only thing he is basically looking for is utmost convenience and durability. If the yak I am investing in isn’t solid and durable enough, there is no point in having it in the first place.

An inflatable boat is always vulnerable to cuts and punctures. Keeping that in perspective, Intex integrated the boat with three individual chambers to keep the boat afloat. Even if one of these chambers goes through a puncture or anything like that, the other two will work their best in keeping the yak afloat.

The boat has also gone through vigorous testing to ensure durability and to keep it risk-free.

Whenever someone is paying for an inflatable yak, they must be looking for various features that the boat may or may not offer them. The Intex Excursion 5 comes with a number of features that include having rod holders for those who love fishing , a grab line to provide you with the safety you need when rafting.

It also features handles for easy transportation. You can easily set it up and inflate it without even asking for someone else’s help.

Overall Performance

As far as the performance of Excursion 5 goes, we have to say that it is not meant for sports lovers. The company designed this boat exclusively for family and friends. You cannot take this boat to competitions.

However, if you only want a boat so you can enjoy a long holiday on the water with your friends and fam then you won’t find anything better than this kayak.

One thing that did put us off was that it takes a lot of time to inflate. You will have to buy a gas tank if you want to get it inflated within minutes. So that is a little extra investment you will have to make but other than that, the boat is a solid product to invest in.

Final Thoughts

So, this is everything that we could gather on Intex Excursion 5. This is a very well-thought boat that is constructed out of premium quality materials.

The fact that it can accommodate a bunch of people ensures you can have your party on the water without having to pay a lot. It is highly durable and provides the user with utmost stability while fishing. It is also very spacious so one can easily take all of his gadgets to spend a nice sunny day in nature.

If you’re willing to make a solid investment and then you won’t find anything better than this excellent yak.

Aufbau & Design
