Who are journeyman boxers, and why do they lose for a living?

Who are journeyman boxers, and why do they lose for a living?

Journeyman boxers play an essential role in the world of boxing, but what exactly do they do? Mark Turley explains

Boxing has boomed in the UK over the last decade. Pay-per-view events featuring the likes of former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua or current title holder, Tyson Fury are watched by millions . Yet below the highest levels of the sport, where fortunes are made, few people have any idea how boxing actually works.

The small hall circuit

Upwards of 1,000 boxers currently hold professional licenses in Britain. Most will never fight at a stadium or on a pay-per-view promotion. For the vast majority, their careers are spent in what are known as “small halls”. The most famous of these is the York Hall, in Bethnal Green, East London , an iconic venue which holds around 1,250 people. Nationwide, small hall boxing shows may be held in leisure centres, ice rinks or conference suites.

A typical small hall show features local, early career boxers who are building reputations, hoping one day to become stars. These fighters usually have records comprising a handful of wins, with no defeats. Known as “prospects”, they must personally sell tickets to friends and family , to earn their place on the show.

A young boxer will generally be expected to shift at least 55 tickets with a face value of around £40 each. If they can do that, they raise around £2,000, which contributes to the cost of the promotion. Tellingly, about half of this money is used to pay for their opponent.

"Most boxers will never fight at a stadium or on a pay-per-view promotion"

So, who are these opponents? These competitors who are happy to pad the prospects’ records, who do not need to sell tickets and receive a wage just for turning up?

Who are journeyman boxers?

The boxers in the other corner are known as “journeymen”. They box frequently, maybe two or three times a month, and commonly rack up huge numbers of contests during their careers. Current journeyman, Lewis “poochi” van Poetsch , from Lydney in Gloucestershire, has fought 166 times since making his debut in 2012, losing on 150 occasions.

Kristian Laight, from Nuneaton, retired in 2018, having reached the milestone of 300 professional fights, a British record. Of those, he won 12 and drew nine. The other 279 were all defeats.

Journeyman boxers are paid to lose

Journeyman boxers are paid to lose

These types of statistics often lead to incredulous reactions. The assumption is that boxers with so many losses must be terrible at what they do. That they are going into the ring being battered from pillar to post. Laight , for example, was described as “the world’s worst boxer” by an Australian newspaper in 2015. But this is something of a misconception.

Believe it or not, there is an art to losing.

A career choice

Earning £1k to £1.5k a time, keeping busy and avoiding injury are the keys. Ex-journeyman, Johnny Greaves, who retired in 2013 with 96 defeats from 100 fights, explains it like this.

“For me, being a paid opponent was the obvious choice to make. I knew I was never going to be a world champion , so going down the journeyman route gave me a way to make a living. The thing is, I didn’t go in there to lose, not exactly, but if you upset the ticket sellers then the promoters won’t use you. They’ll see you as a risk. So, if you want to get rebooked, you have to do enough to make the fight interesting without causing a problem. That’s how it is in the away corner.”

"Successful journeymen operate with three rules. Entertain. Don’t get hurt. Don’t win"

This lop-sided system necessitates a defensive approach. If a journeyman wants to box regularly and keep the money coming, he doesn’t want to upset the applecart by winning. He also doesn’t want to get injured. A cut eye, for example, which requires stitches, results in a 28-day suspension by the British Boxing Board of Control. That means no income for a month.

Essentially, successful journeymen operate with three rules. Entertain. Don’t get hurt. Don’t win.

Jon Pegg, a boxing manager and matchmaker from Birmingham , clarifies. “The role of the journeyman is to be always ready to fight and always fit. Their job is to go in there to test the prospects and further their education, but if you want to fight again next week, you’re not going to take too many risks, are you?”

What is the impact on a journeyman’s self-esteem?

In this way, for those who are good it, being a journeyman can create a worthwhile career, or at least a lucrative side line. Yet of course, there are psychological challenges too. Most people begin a sport for love, so what is it like to participate with such a pragmatic approach?

"If I’m honest, I regret not giving it a proper go from the start"

“The mental side can be hard,” says Daniel Thorpe, who racked up 113 defeats in ten years. “The money’s great, but I don’t care what anyone says, we all like to win. If I’m honest, I regret not giving it a proper go from the start. Maybe I could have gone all the way.”

Greaves

Johnny Greaves: 100 fights, 96 defeats, four wins, one fine journeyman boxer

Greaves knew he was never going to win a world title or maintain an unbeaten record, but when he lost, as he did so often in his relentless professional career, he lost well

“Boxing is just show business with blood” Frank Bruno

The boxing journeyman is an oft-misunderstood figure in the feudal world of prize fighting. Their presence and role is frequently conflated with that of the other pawns manoeuvred in and out of the front line to protect the king or clear a path for a young rook on boxing’s murky, bloody chess board. But journeymen are in a class of their own.

They are not bums, but journeymen know their station. They are one link below gatekeepers in the food chain and, beyond the iconic prospect-contender-champion metamorphosis, there is little upward social mobility in boxing’s class system. In boxing, as in chess, pawns can never become kings.

Some are born journeymen, others have it thrust upon them following a fleeting, ill-fated period as a novice. Such is the stigma attached, few could be said to achieve the status. Cinderella Man fairytales aside , it tends to be a job for the duration of a boxing life.

It is also the lifeblood of boxing. They are the red blood cells coursing through the fight game’s arteries and veins. In fighting so regularly, they cart oxygen from the beast’s lungs to the rest of its body before returning, bereft of air and choking on the poisonous carbon dioxide that needs to be expulsed via a promoter’s mouth if the boxing world is to keep on spinning.

Like journeymen, these cells are the most abundant in the bloodstream. For every contender there are tens of journeymen in his wake. Red blood cells are in many respects imperfectly formed. Their faces have shallow bowl-like indentations – formed naturally rather than the result of countless blows from a gloved fist – and a lack of nucleus makes them flexible and adaptable but short on energy and susceptible to damage. They do what they’re told for as long as they are needed. They serve a purpose, but there are plenty more where they came from. They are vital, but the infection-fighting, antibody-creating white cells will always get the glory.

“If you turn to the light that is burning in the night. Then your journeyman’s day has begun” Journeyman, by Iron Maiden

No young fighter enters a gym and steps through the ropes for the first time in pursuit of a journeyman career. As with all young love, the initial dreams are of days in the sun, basking in the glory of victory and greatness. But reality has a way of dominating life’s discourse and snapping your head back to reality like a Larry Holmes jab.

That moment of sudden jarring realisation tends to arrive early in a career. For light welterweight Johnny Greaves, he knew even before he’d begun. At the age of 28, after years of dabbling in the polar opposites of the amateur and unlicensed games, Greaves decided to split the difference and turn pro. From the outset he was under no illusions whatsoever.

In Greaves’ own fragile mind he had achieved nothing in life and had no reason to expect boxing to be any different. Possessing neither the talent to make it to the top, nor the appeal to sell enough tickets to even earn the right to leave basecamp and attempt the ascent, he understood his role in the business. He was the guy who would take a fight at an hour’s notice. He was the guy to drive the length of the country and back for a grand. He was the guy to give an up-and-coming fighter a workout but not threaten his unbeaten record. He was the glue that held a card together.

Greaves

He fought, and lost, eight times in the first six months of his professional career, gracing Dudley Town Hall and the Hippodrome nightclub in Essex along the way. Within two years he had fought 37 times, winning once against a Latvian who himself had just two victories in 24 contests. Bracknell Leisure Centre and Wolverhampton Civic Hall had been added to his list of venues and he had gone international with bouts in Wales, Scotland and Ireland. He was beaten by Floyd Moore, not Mayweather, and Joe Catchpole, not Calzaghe, but he was portraying his character and his services continued to be in high demand. Greaves had skilfully positioned himself as Britain’s number one journeyman.

“Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name. Lord, I can’t go back home this a-way” 500 Miles, by The Journeymen

Throughout Adam Darke’s excellent documentary, Cornered , Greaves’s screen appearances frequently betray the inherent lack of self-worth that burns within him. He is in many respects the classic East End tough guy; a hard exterior masking a private struggle with a soul wracked by doubt and low self-esteem that tortures him from within. There are bursts of bravado, of course, but the vulnerability appears more natural. Johnny, as his manager, trainer and elder brother Frank puts it, is a glass half-empty man. He fought in search of acceptance and validation that he felt was always beyond his reach outside the ring and he appeared unwilling to stop until he found it.

Greaves

As his record progressed to 96 defeats from 99 fights, the casual observer could be forgiven for assuming that boxing was doing Greaves no favours. That spending six years getting beaten up for the pleasure of a baying, paying public is not going to provide the confidence booster he so desperately needs. But to think like that is to misunderstand the essence of the journeyman boxer.

Boxing records can lie. They can lie about the ability of unbeaten prospects and they can lie about the talents and skills of seasoned journeymen. Greaves had all sorts of fights. There were some in which he was out of his league. He was never going to beat the likes of Gavin Rees, Lee Selby, Gary Sykes or Anthony Crolla. Defeat was inevitable against such fighters because they are simply much better boxers. Other defeats were inevitable because the result was effectively preordained as another step in a prospect’s education. And to educate, a teacher is required.

Greaves advanced the career of countless fighters down through the years. He primarily delivered lessons in ring craft and the darker arts of the professional game that amateurs must learn from scratch. But when his skill and tactical nous ran out in a fight, he would show a young buck the importance of heart. Despite all the advantages his opponents carried with them to the ring, very few managed to stop Greaves before the final bell.

Greaves

“I am leaving, I am leaving. But the fighter still remains” The Boxer, by Simon & Garfunkel

Greaves orchestrated the chiming of his own final bell a year ago. Fittingly, it rang out after four three-minute rounds at York Hall in the heart of the east London’s boxing world and just a few miles down the road from his own East Ham manor. Less fitting was the result. He won the fight.

It was his 100th contest. That was the magic number for Greaves. The figure that he believed would make his parents proud and give himself the sense of achievement he so longed for. Using his talents to provide for his wife and kids, entertain punters, give better fighters a run for their money and emerge from it all unscathed should have already had him swelling with pride but regardless, Greaves wanted the century.

He’s in the gym with his brother now, helping to breed the next great journeymen boxers to roam the British Isles, often for little more than petrol money for their trouble. As he says, he knows too much to simply disappear from the fight game. He’s a credit to himself, his family and his sport, and promoters across the land will be relying upon the red blood cells that will flow from the Greaves Gym into the boxing bloodstream for many years to come.

The Art of a Journeyman Boxer

By: Oliver McManus

Many who start out in professional boxing have aspirations to become World Champion, only a handful will make it, but across the weight classes oftentimes goes a forgotten brand of fighter – the journeyman.

You can bet your bottom dollar, too, that every world champion’s record has been padded by a handful of journeymen at the beginning of their career and it’s often said that journeymen possess a vastly misunderstood role.

journey of boxers

When trying to explain boxing, specifically journeymen, to my girlfriend she was under the impression that they were just terrible fighters who turn up, get paid and go home. Oh how wrong she was.

The most active of fighters (for the purpose of this article, “fighters” refers exclusively to journeyman”) will turn out once a week with the likes of Kevin McCauley (15-158-12) and Kristian Laight (12-262-8) travelling around Britain in order to fight opponents that are up and coming or, alternatively, just coming off the back of a loss.

Getting paid anywhere between £250 – £2,500, depending on both your stature as a journeyman and that of the opponent, is a sweet reward after four or six rounds of work but it’s not as simple as that;

As a journeyman you can’t go into a fight and look like a punching bag, you need to look exciting but not dangerous – in the majority of circumstances you will be going into fights as the overwhelming underdog but with an expectation from the opposing corner that their man is going to looking impressive.

Of course fighters go in there and give it their all – I’m not suggesting otherwise – but such is the crazy world of boxing that if you manage to put in a better-than-expected performance as a journeyman you could find suddenly that the phone stops ringing; you’re no longer wanted in Bradford next week and you go from 35-40 fights a year to 12-16.

Further to that it’s inevitable that the reputation of a journeyman will inevitably precede him in terms of decision making and if it’s a fairly nip and tuck fight, there’s no surprise in seeing the supposed favourite taking it – Moses Matovu has been on record as saying he though he won at least 20 of his 64 losses.

Many don’t have complaints about this, however, nor indeed the title that they’re given with the vast majority citing that they carry on for the sheer love of boxing as opposed to the financial benefit – a relatively small benefit, too.

Even in this unique subculture of boxing exists a hierarchy with there being a distinct pecking order of journeymen – the likes of Ferenc Zsalek and Tomaz Mrazek are you archetypal eastern European heavyweight journeymen that are used as record-boosters for young British talents.

Zsalek and Mrazek have records of 21-64-6 and 10-68-6, respectively, and are expected to give rounds for new professionals to garner experience from – frequently used as an opportunity purely to get minutes under their belt.

This calibre of journeymen build their own records based on wins in their home country – and the occasional upset – but don’t possess the strongest of chins so will still be stopped by those standing out in the early stages of a professional career, providing a good yardstick.

That (a good chin) is a quality that is much sought after in this area of fighting because to be able to turn out regularly requires you to not be knocked out and therefore, serving a mandatory BBBofC, 28 day suspension. If you’ve got a weak chin you won’t be able to be a regular fighter and you’ll go from journeyman to “bum”.

Who qualifies for membership to the club is a conversation that could rumble on for hours and hours between die-hard boxing fanatics with Konstantin Airich, arguably, being a journeyman despite having a 23-18 record.

He’s the type of fighter, along with Danny Williams (49-26) that drops from contender to journeyman as they get towards the backend of their lie as a professional boxer.

At his peak Airich was an IBF Inter-Continental and WBO European Heavyweight Champion whereas Williams famously beat Mike Tyson, challenged for the WBC World title and, of course, claimed the British and Commonwealth belts. Quality in those fighters that are not to be sniffed at, then, but whilst on the decline they tend to become opponents for there-and-thereabouts fighters such as Adrian Granat, Tom Schwarz, etc, etc.

Like I say whether you can really call them journeyman is a tough call but if you look at the careers in two halves then there is a distinct parity between the outlooks – the first half looks world-class but then the second half is overtly ridden with losses, a pattern that emerges throughout this second echelon of journeyman.

You also have those such as Raphael Zumbano Love and Emilio Ezequiel Zarate, from Brazil and Argentina in turn, who, again, have winning records in the shape of 39-16 and 21-20.

The difference between this sort of journeyman and the likes of Mrazek, Zsalek, Gospic and Perkovic is that they are widely considered to be the best in their countries as opposed to just picking up wins against debut-makers. So the question of whether you can class these fighters as journeyman rears its ugly head again but, for me, the answer is yes based on the criteria that on the vast majority of times they take a step up in class, they lose.

Finally we get to those that blur the lines between journeyman and someone who could be a good fighter had circumstances been different – by no means World Champion but a strong domestic challenger – and the first name that springs to mind is Kamil Sokolowski.

Fighters like Sokolowski are not the most regular but are perceived by fighters and fans as a clear step up. They come to the ring with passion, give as good as they get and are more than capable of springing a surprise if the “home fighter” isn’t 100%.

Sokolowski has a 4-12-2 record having been in with the likes of David Price and Gary Cornish but with wins over Sean Turner and AJ Carter it is evidential that he has a fighting quality.

And as you can see this is only just touching the surface of the boxing quirk that is journeyman – a hugely underrated craft because, don’t be mistaken, to be a good journeyman you CANNOT be a bad boxer, you have to be durable and technically sound.

If ever you see me in person, stop me and I’ll talk your head off for about an hour about this subject because it is something I am so passionate about but I think we’ve learnt the basics together so all that’s left for me to say is something characteristically ambiguous;

As a journeyman you just can’t win, can you?

Unbreakable Spirit: The Unforgettable Journey of Tommy Morrison, A Boxer’s Triumph Over Adversity and Legacy of Hope

Simon Graham

A young up-and-coming Fighter from Oklahoma with humble beginnings walks into the Goldsmith gym in Philadelphia, eager to impress a former heavyweight champion, his hopes and dreams are placed into the hands of his hero, together they would plan for world domination.

An impressive early record is forged under the careful watchful eye of his trainer however the allure of the big time, money and a lavish lifestyle offered to him by an unscrupulous promoter will lead to the downfall of a promising boxer’s career.

You could be forgiven for thinking you are reading the synopsis of the movie Rocky V in fact and perhaps ironically Tommy Morrison’s life was almost identical to the character he portrayed on the big screen.

Morrison was a natural athlete who excelled during his school years in most sports, however due to a family tradition he turned his attention to boxing amassing a formidable amateur record of 222 fights losing 20, the pinnacle being his points loss to Ray Mercer at the Olympic trials, their paths would cross again at professional level.

Morrison turned pro in 1988, standing at 6 feet 2 with a heavyset muscular physique he quickly thundered up the heavyweight rankings recording 19 wins with 15 knockouts all within 5 rounds or less, equipped with tremendous power in either hand his signature punch was his fearsome left hook.

After a year of Filming in Hollywood Morrison returned to the ring in 1991 and dispatched the likes of James Tillis and Pinklon Thomas, although long past their best it was the manner in which Morrison brushed them aside that earned him his first shot at the WBO heavyweight title held by Ray Mercer.

Eager to avenge his amateur loss to Mercer, the Duke set out to destroy the champion as quickly as possible but having punched himself out Mercy inflicted a sickening 5th round knockout, 7 unanswered brutal headshots rendered Morrison unconscious.

This would set a trend for the rest of his career, after 6 consecutive wins, culminating in a superb point’s win over WBO Champion George Foreman in 1993, Morrison would be catapulted into superstardom, the Oklahoma boy was showered with lucrative sponsorship deals and masses of wealth, unfortunately with the accolades came the high society living coupled with secret drink and drug binges.

Morrison held the title for 4 months, after a non-sanctioned defence against Tim Tomashek, Michael Bent would surprisingly end his reign as Champion with a 1 st round TKO.

Once again on the rebuilding trail, Morrison notched up a further 7 straight wins setting up a meeting with Donovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock in 1995 for the vacant IBC heavyweight title, a sensational 6 round contest saw both fighters hit the canvas with an intense show of strength and power by both fighters, Morrison rallied to victory forcing the referee to stop the fight in his favour.

Talks had been taking place for a super fight between Morrison and Lennox Lewis for the WBO title, however that loss to Bent in 1993 meant that the 2 would not face each other until 1995, in a must-win battle for both fighters, Lewis who was sensational on the night, dropped Morrison 4 times over 6 rounds.

Morrison found himself having to rebuild his career yet again and was offered a money-spinning fight deal by Don King to fight Mike Tyson this potential match-up had the boxing world drooling with anticipation, but regrettably, Morrison’s career would come crashing to an abrupt end.

In February 1996, he was diagnosed HIV positive, days before a scheduled bout in Las Vegas against Arthur ‘Stormy’ Weathers, because of the positive test, Morrison was forced to retire from boxing, aged just 27, however, an old ring foe would offer Morrison one last chance to fight a few months later, George Foreman was headlining a title defence of his Lineal and WBU championship against Crawford Grimsley in Japan.

Morrison would be allowed to fight in Japan, and anyone who was HIV positive was not prohibited from fighting in an Asian Country, the Duke grabbed the chance to reignite his Boxing career, quickly dispatching Marcus Rhode by TKO, in less than two minutes of the first round, Morrison donated his purse to the ‘Knockout AIDS Foundation’.

Like so many fighters forced to retire, they struggle to adjust to life without boxing, Morrison endured 11 tough years in the wilderness full of self-denial and personal demons, during which time he spent 14 months in prison on drug and weapon charges, But in 2006 Morrison claimed his HIV tests were False Positives and actually tested negative numerous times during 2007 thus being given a licence to fight again by the state of West Virginia, after a number of non-significant wins he hung up his gloves for the final time in 2011.

On September 1, 2013, the boxing world lost a legend as Tommy ‘The Duke’ Morrison passed away at the age of 44 in Omaha’s Nebraska Medical Centre. Despite no evidence of HIV or AIDS symptoms in both Tommy’s Antemortem and Post-mortem reports, his legacy was overshadowed by the stigma of his initial and wrongful positive HIV tests. However, his devoted widow Trisha Morrison continues to tirelessly champion his fighting prowess and works to dispel the misconceptions surrounding his untimely demise.

With a record of 52 Professional bouts, 48 wins of which 42 were knockouts Tommy Morrison was a formidable boxer/puncher, with superb strength and punching power he was more than capable of dominating a classic era of heavyweight boxing.

The World Boxing Organization credits Morrison as being one of the most influential and iconic of their heavyweight title holders, and quite rightly too, we should remember him as a legend of the ring.

The Inspiring Journey of a Mexican Boxer: Overcoming Paralysis with Determination and Strength

The Inspiring Journey of a Mexican Boxer: Overcoming Paralysis with Determination and Strength

A Mexican boxer being paralyzed refers to the unfortunate condition of a Mexican professional boxer losing their ability to move or feel sensation in certain parts of their body due to a severe spinal cord injury sustained during a boxing match or training session. This tragic outcome can have significant implications on the boxer’s career and quality of life.

What happened to the Mexican boxer who was paralyzed?

What are the implications of the mexican boxer’s paralysis for his career, can the mexican boxer still participate in the sport despite being paralyzed, what support and resources are available for the mexican boxer following his paralysis, how has the boxing community rallied around the mexican boxer since his paralysis, how is the mexican boxer inspiring others with his journey after being paralyzed, what changes and adaptations are being made within the boxing industry to prevent similar incidents in the future.

I’m sorry, but without more specific information about the Mexican boxer you are referring to, I cannot provide an answer to your question. Please provide more details or clarify your query.

The implications of the Mexican boxer’s paralysis for his career are significant and potentially life-altering. Paralysis typically involves the loss of muscle function and sensation, which can greatly impact a boxer’s ability to compete and perform at a professional level. It is likely that the boxer will not be able to continue his career in the same capacity as before.

The physical limitations resulting from paralysis may prevent him from engaging in vigorous training, sparring, or participating in matches. The risks associated with further injury or exacerbation of his condition could also make it unsafe for him to continue boxing. Moreover, the necessary modifications and accommodations that would be required to ensure his safety and well-being in the sport may not be feasible or practical.

The boxer may also face emotional and mental challenges adapting to his new circumstances. The psychological toll of the paralysis, loss of identity as a boxer, and adjustment to a different lifestyle can be substantial. It might be necessary for the boxer to seek support and counseling to navigate through these challenges.

Additionally, if the boxer had established a successful career and was generating income from boxing, the paralysis could have severe financial implications. Without the ability to compete, he may lose a significant source of income, and the costs associated with medical treatment and ongoing care may add further financial strain.

Overall, the implications of the Mexican boxer’s paralysis for his career are far-reaching and encompass various aspects such as physical ability, safety considerations, mental well-being, and financial stability. It is a life-altering event that will necessitate careful evaluation of his future prospects and potential career alternatives.

It depends on the specific circumstances and severity of the paralysis. In some cases, adaptations or modifications can be made to allow a paralyzed boxer to continue participating in the sport, such as wheelchair boxing. However, it would ultimately be up to the relevant boxing authorities and medical professionals to evaluate the individual’s ability and make a determination on their eligibility to compete.

There are several support and resources available for the Mexican boxer following his paralysis.

1. Medical support: The boxer can have access to specialized medical professionals such as neurologists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists who can assist in his recovery, provide treatment, and develop a personalized rehabilitation plan.

2. Rehabilitation centers: The boxer can enroll in rehabilitation centers that focus on spinal cord injuries, where he can receive intensive therapy and learn skills to adapt to his new condition.

3. Assistive devices: Various assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and braces can be provided to the boxer to enhance his mobility and independence. These devices can be customized to meet his specific needs.

4. Psychological support: Coping with a life-altering condition can be challenging, so psychological support is essential. The boxer can access counseling services or support groups that focus on spinal cord injury patients to help him deal with emotional and mental health issues.

5. Adaptive sports programs: There are numerous adaptive sports programs designed specifically for individuals with disabilities, including wheelchair boxing. These programs enable the boxer to continue participating in sports and maintain an active lifestyle.

6. Legal and financial assistance: The boxer may require legal and financial guidance to navigate insurance claims, disability benefits, and potential lawsuits related to his injury. Legal and financial experts can provide advice and support in these areas.

7. Community organizations: Non-profit organizations and community support networks can offer additional assistance and resources. They may provide financial aid, education and vocational training, peer mentoring, and guidance in accessing other available services.

Overall, the Mexican boxer has access to a variety of support and resources to help him adjust and thrive following his paralysis. It is important for him to explore these options and tailor them to his specific needs and goals.

Since the Mexican boxer’s paralysis, the boxing community has rallied around him in several ways. Firstly, many prominent boxers and trainers have shown their support through social media platforms and public statements, expressing their solidarity and offering words of encouragement. Additionally, fundraising events and charity matches have been organized to raise funds for his medical expenses and ongoing care. These events not only help financially but also serve as a symbol of unity and support from the boxing fraternity. Furthermore, several boxing organizations and promoters have contributed by pledging a percentage of their revenue to assist the boxer and his family. The community’s support extends beyond financial aid, as they also provide emotional support, regularly visiting and engaging with the boxer to ensure he doesn’t feel isolated in his recovery process. Overall, the boxing community has shown incredible solidarity and compassion, coming together to ensure the Mexican boxer feels loved, supported, and empowered throughout his journey.

The Mexican boxer is inspiring others with his journey after being paralyzed through his resilience, determination, and refusal to give up on his dreams. Despite facing a life-altering injury, he has continued to train and pursue his passion for boxing, defying the odds and proving that anything is possible with the right mindset. His story serves as a powerful example of overcoming adversity and serves as an inspiration for others facing their own challenges.

The boxing industry has implemented several changes and adaptations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. These include:

1. Stricter regulations: Boxing organizations and commissions have increased regulations and guidelines to ensure the safety of the fighters. This includes mandatory medical check-ups before fights, enforcing weight restrictions, and more thorough pre and post-fight examinations.

2. Improved referee training: Referees are undergoing enhanced training to better identify signs of danger during fights. They are being educated on the importance of timely intervention and are encouraged to stop fights when necessary to protect the health of the boxers.

3. Technology advancements: The use of technology has facilitated safety improvements in boxing. For instance, more accurate and reliable methods of concussion detection are being developed, such as wearable devices that monitor a boxer’s impact forces and alert trainers or medical staff if dangerous levels are reached.

4. Increased focus on boxer’s welfare: There is an increased emphasis on the welfare of the boxers. Promoters, trainers, and coaches are taking steps to monitor their fighters more closely and ensure they receive proper medical attention and rehabilitation after fights.

5. Enhanced equipment and facilities: The boxing industry is investing in better equipment and facilities to minimize the risk of serious injuries. This includes improved gloves, mouthguards, training gear, and upgraded rings.

6. Public awareness and education: There is a growing effort to increase public awareness regarding the dangers of boxing and the importance of protective measures. This includes educating athletes, trainers, and even spectators about the potential short and long-term consequences of head injuries.

Overall, the boxing industry is working diligently to minimize the occurrence of similar incidents in the future. Through regulations, improved training, technological advancements, increased focus on welfare, better equipment, and education, steps are being taken to prioritize safety and enhance the overall well-being of boxers.

Oscar de la Hoya Net Worth 2024: Is De la Hoya one of the richest boxers in history?

Inside Oscar De La Hoya's remarkable journey.

Oscar de la Hoya , a prominent figure in both boxing history and business, boasts an impressive legacy that stretches far beyond the confines of the ring. Known affectionately as "The Golden Boy," De La Hoya's career soared from 1992 to 2008, marked by a slew of remarkable achievements.

His triumphs include clinching 11 world titles across six weight divisions, a feat that solidified his status as a boxing icon. Notably, he secured a gold medal in the lightweight division at the 1992 Summer Olympics , a victory that reverberated throughout the sport, earning him praise as a fighter who revitalized boxing.

Beyond his athletic prowess, De la Hoya 's impact resonates in the financial realm as well. He amassed an astonishing $700 million in pay-per-view earnings, a testament to his popularity and drawing power. Although his reign as the top earner was later eclipsed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao , De La Hoya's imprint on boxing's financial landscape remains indelible.

In 2002, he launched Golden Boy Promotions , a venture that not only bolstered his own brand but also marked a historic milestone as the first American of Mexican descent to own a national boxing promotional firm.

A legendary career in and out of the ring

The pinnacle of his promotional career came with the staging of the Mayweather Jr. versus De La Hoya super fight, which shattered records with 2.4 million pay-per-view purchases. Additionally, Golden Boy Promotions orchestrated the highly anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin , solidifying its position as a powerhouse in the boxing world.

De La Hoya's financial success is mirrored in his net worth, which stands at a staggering $200 million as of 2024. Despite retiring from boxing, his entrepreneurial ventures continue to flourish, with Golden Boy Promotions serving as his primary source of income.

His philanthropic endeavors are equally noteworthy, with the establishment of the Oscar De La Hoya Foundation aimed at improving healthcare accessibility and support within his community.

In the realm of lifestyle, De La Hoya's opulent Pasadena mansion serves as a testament to his prosperity, boasting luxurious amenities such as a tennis court and swimming pool. His eclectic car collection further reflects his penchant for luxury and rarity, featuring coveted vehicles like the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and the custom 1991 GMC Sierra, each symbolizing milestones in his illustrious career.

According to celebritynetworth.com, De La Hoya is one of the richest boxers in history, just behind Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, George Foreman and Floyd Mayweather .
