It tells the historical tale of the Maratha Kingdom as it has seen every event that occurred in Peshwas Life over time. It was built by the Peshwas’ symbolizing the brave hearts of the Marathas, who strived hard to keep its glory alive. Though the fort couldn’t tolerate the battering from the wrong time but the stone boundaries still recite the untold tales of the colourful journeys lead by the heroic Marathas.However, some ruins still remain reciting the remarkable stories and contorted tales. You can witness the enormous stone boundaries made to protect the beautiful Shaniwar Wada, which shows the level of security provided to the people of the kingdom. The walls have a magnificent wooden gate reflecting the Mughal architecture, which is another example of how secure the palace was made. There are long iron spikes tucked into the gate, which could reduce the attack of the enemy and kept elephants away.Besides this, you can see a garden which follows the style of the Mughal architecture. It also has a lovely fountain resembling a 16 petaled lotus, right in the middle of the garden. Adding to that, you can see the boundaries marked on the ground, which could tell about all the rooms. There is nothing more than this havoc of time, which changed the face of the mighty Shaniwar Wada into nothing. But you can still make these remains your window into the past to relive what has happened in history.History of Shaniwar Wada:The foundation stone of the Shaniwar Wada was laid in 1730 by Peshwa Bajirao I. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal palace of seven stories made out of stone. But the people of the national capital argued that only King can have a castle made of stone. So, the construction of Shaniwar Wada began using bricks. It took two years to complete this elegant structure, which displayed an excellent blend of the Maratha Imperial architecture with the Mughal architecture. The interiors had valuable furniture and decorations along with carvings of flowers and paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The first major fire in the year 1791 destroyed a significant part of the fort, which was re-constructed again. Then the next explosion in 1808 burnt all the necessary artifacts and documents in the palace. Then another fire in 1812 destroyed the upper two stories of the castle, followed by a fire in 1813 which destroyed the Royal Hall. All this destruction was taken to another level in the year 1818. The British attacked Shaniwar Wada, which resulted in collapsing all the top stories. Finally, in the year 1828, a fire caught the whole palace, which burned for a week and wrecked it. Architecture of Shaniwar Wada:Architecture of Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of Maratha style of construction blended with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is adorned with iron spikes to restrain the enemy attack as it is enormous enough to pass an elephant through it. There is a small aisle on the top of the door which has dome-shaped windows definitely taken from the Mughal architecture. Besides this gate, the Wada has four more gates, namely Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaja, and Narayan Darwaza. The walls have floral carvings and paintings resembling the Mughal architecture style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also found painted at various significant spots. The windows and doors are also dome-shaped contributing to the traces of Mughal architecture. Archaeologists believe that initially, the fort was six-floored before it was destroyed by the fire. Finally, the garden has a 16 petaled lotus representing the grace of the bygone era.

Built in 1982 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, the Aga Khan Palace is a magnificent piece of history situated in 19 acres of land in the Yerwada area in Pune. Referred to as one of the most important landmarks of Indian history, along with the Indian freedom struggle, the palace has its roots deeply etched into bygone eras. The palace was built to help the poor in the areas surrounding Pune, which was drastically hit by famine in the early 1980s. One of the most stunning pieces of architecture in all of Pune, the Aga Khan Palace is also a famous tourist attraction, which was designed by a world-famous architect called Charles Correa.Additionally, the palace houses the samadhis (memorials) of Mahatma Gandhi’s wife, Kasturba Gandhi. Sources suggest that both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi’s secretary Mahadev Desai breathed their last in the palace premises. And it is because of this that their memorials have been safeguarded in the palace grounds.The Aga Khan Palace is located in a huge ground, and has five, luxurious and spacious halls, along with several lawns. The structure resonates of Italian architecture, elegant yet intricate and magnificent.Of all the rooms and features of the palace, its arches are the most beautiful, almost mesmerising to the eyes. Aga Khan Palace has two huge floors, in addition to a corridor which spreads across the entire structure. The palace is known for organising several exhibitions and programmes throughout the year. Most of these reflect Gandhi’s lifestyle, thereby offering visitors a deep insight into the Mahatma’s life. Moreover, it is because of this and Gandhi’s links to it that the palace is now also known as the Gandhi National Memorial Society. One of the most prominent attractions of the palace is the room where Gandhi stayed during his imprisonment, along with his personal belongings and pictures of the other freedom fighters. |

Sinhagad or Kondana is a pride of the southwestern region of Pune. This fort was the one to support Maharashtra during the ancient battles. Sinhagad battle of 1671 is the significant one. Bhuleshwar range of the great Sahyadris is the home to this historical monument. The fortress has an elevation of around 1312 m above the sea level. Sinhagad has got its own breakneck slopes to protect it from all sides. There are two entrances to this fort – one in the north-eastern region (Pune Darwaza) and another one towards the southeastern part (Kalyan Darwaza). The authenticity and the richness of Sinhagad fortress date back to around 1000 years. This is evident from the carvings present on the walls of Kaundinya Eshwar temple there. Sinhagad is valued as a true sightseeing heritage.To begin your sightseeing adventure, you have Rajaram’s tomb which is worth a visit. The fortress displays some of the adorable monoliths of Tanaji Malusare – one of the efficient safe-keepers of the fort from Shivaji Maharaj’s era. Besides these crucial displays, the fortress has got its own military depot, a Kali temple, breweries, and a Hanuman effigy. Pune Darwaza, Kalyan Darwaza, Tilak Bungalow, Hawa Point, Kade Lot, Amruteshwar Temple, Tanaji Samadhi and Memorial raises the elegance of this fortress even today.Summiting the fortress offers some stunning views of the Khadakwasla Dam from one end; while from its other side, you can see glimpses of Torna Fort.

1. Aga Khan Palace

One of the most iconic structures of Pune, Aga Khan Palace has a special place in every Punekars heart. Constructed by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III in 1892, it has stood the test of time and wars. It has seen several defining moments in Indian history, such as the imprisonment of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, and Mahadev Desai.

Spread over 19 acres of pure goodness, the area boasts evergreen trees, lush lawns, exquisite architecture, and a well-maintained museum. It transcends you to the corridors of history, showcasing its wonderful culture that still breathes through the walls.

It is the headquarters of the Gandhi National Memorial Society, and it holds the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi buried in the ground.

2. Khadakwasla Dam

The dam and reservoir that provides Pune city with its share of water are among the coolest and most popular tourist destinations of Pune. People often come here to click beautiful pictures of the dam with an amazing backdrop of the mountains and a full waterbed.

Enjoy snacking on crispy fritters (pakodas), Maggi, and roasted corn cobs (bhutta) while you are here. It is around 25 kms from the main city centre and is spread over 22000 sq. kms.

3. Kelkar Museum

One of the most famous museums in Pune, the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, is one of its kind. It is a museum built by one man displaying his collections from all over the world under one roof. A three-storied structure containing over 20,000 curios, around 2,500 items are on display for public viewing.

Some interesting artefacts in the museum include different ornaments, Mughal lamps, war weapons, hookah pipes, and vessels that date back to the 14th century. It also houses a replica of the Mastani Mahal with gorgeous chandeliers and exquisite paintings.

You can visit the place anytime from 10 am to 5:30 pm. The entry fee for Indians is ₹10 for kids and ₹50 for adults respectively. For foreigners, the ticket price is ₹50 and ₹200 respectively for kids and adults.

4. Dagdusheth Ganapati

One of the most iconic Ganapati temples of the state, Dagdusheth Ganapati, is revered by every ardent Lord Ganesha devotee. Located near Appa Balwant Chowk, near Laxmi road in Pune, it is one of the oldest Lord Ganesha temples in the country.

Built by Shri Dagdusheth Halwai (sweet maker), it is a must visit for all touring Pune. You can walk in anytime and offer your prayers or view the Lord from the glass wall that divides the road and the temple.

5. Okayama Japanese Friendship Garden

Also known as the Pu La Deshpande Garden, this garden is designed in traditional Japanese style and is inspired by the 300-year old Japanese Korakuen Garden. Ten acres of goodness and refreshing beauty fills your senses with the gorgeous bushes, trees, and a small bridge built over the canal. It holds gorgeous waterfalls, ponds, artificial hillocks, lanterns gracing the landscape.

#Trivia: It is one of the largest Japanese gardens in the world outside Japan.

6. Parvati Hill

It is one of the most famous tekdis or hillocks of Pune, covered with verdant greenery and scenic views. With a 250-year old history, Parvati hill is famous for its temple and museum. You can reach the top of the hill by climbing stone steps that are built-in typical Maratha-style architecture.

The museum houses some of the most iconic artefacts and idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Karthikeya, and Lord Vishnu. It is a visitor's delight in the truest sense.

7. Saras Baug

Named after the famous 'Sarus' (crane) bird, Saras Baug is a favourite picnic spot for all Punekars. It houses gorgeous lawns spread over several acres and is one of the most revered Ganesha temples in the city. The sloping gardens and the lip-smacking Maharashtrian food make it a delight to visit.

8. Shaniwar Wada

An excellent example of Maratha-style architecture, Shaniwar Wada was built by the Peshwas of Pune in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a massive fort-like structure showcasing scenes from Mahabharata and Ramayana painted at various spots.

Some iconic spaces to note inside the structure include the massive wooden door, Delhi Darwaza, gorgeous gardens, well-laid-out fountains, solid boundary wall, and excellent light and sound show that happens every day.

9. Sinhagad Fort

A trekkers paradise, Sinhagad Fort, was once the stronghold of the Maratha army. Located around 30kms from Pune, it attracts several locals and tourists. The cool breeze, the sunset point, and the several small tapris or snack centres located within the open fort premises delight your taste buds. Enjoy the typical Bhakri with Pitla (a local delicacy) and hot bhajjis or onion fritters while roaming around Sinhagad fort.

10. Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

A great place to enjoy with kids, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj is home to several animals. You can see a leopard, white tiger, elephants, blackbucks, sambar deers, etc. It also houses the famous snake park , home to a 13 ft. cobra. The entry fees are ₹5 and ₹15 for kids and adults, respectively.

11. Pataleshwar Temple

Carved out of one single rock, the Pataleshwar temple was built in the 8th century and is dedicated to the Lord of the Underworld. Several stones are spread across the length and breadth of the temple dating back to 700 to 800 BC. It also holds a Guinness Book of World Records for housing a single grain of rice with 5000 characters. From the massive pillars to the uneven surfaces, this temple is a tourist delight.

Other famous attractions include Vishrambaug , Chaturshrungi temple , Lal Deval or the Synagogue , shopping and eating joints on MG Road, and Deccan and FC road.

Pune One Day Trip Itinerary for Spirituality Seekers & History Lovers: Option 1

If you are a person who loves history and has a spiritual bent, Pune has a lot to offer. The first option for a Pune one day trip itinerary is to go sightseeing around the spiritual and historical places.

The city has some of the most amazing temples. Pune also stands witness to some of the very important events in the history of India. 

Here are the 5 must-visit places in an ideal Pune one day Itinerary for history lovers:

Depending on which part of the city you are staying, you can cover all these places. I would suggest you follow the order I have given above. It will help you explore more within a limited time frame.

Aga Khan Palace

This is one of the most important attractions in Pune city. The palace was built by Sir Sultan Muhammed Shah, Aga Khan III in 1892 to provide employment to famine-hit natives.  

The palace has significant historical value as it act ed as a prison where Mahatma Gandhi along with his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu were imprisoned post the Quit India Movement.  

It was in 1969, that Aga Khan IV donated this palace to the people of India as a mark of respect for the Mahatma. Portraits and photos of Mahatma’s life are kept here for public view.

It was really interesting to see the personal items of Gandhiji on display at the museum here. Some utensils, rare pictures, clothes, chappals (slippers) and a letter written by him on the death of his aide, Mahadeobhai Desai are all open for the visitors to see.

What makes this palace all the more interesting are its marvellous Italian architecture and well-kept lawns.  I suggest you take 30 mins guided tour of the palace to learn more about its historical significance.

Here is some important information regarding visiting the palace:

The palace is not that grand and only one floor is open to the visitors. I would recommend a minimum of 1 hour to visit the palace, although you could spend more time if you like.

Do check out the small outlet selling Khadi items such as clothes, notebooks, pickles and chutney, in case you want to buy something.

The annoying part was that I wasn’t allowed to click pictures with my camera, although phones were allowed. 

Dagaduseth Ganesh Temple

Pune one day trip itinerary will be incomplete without a visit to the famous Hindu temple of Dagaduseth Ganesh. This Lord Ganesh temple is the second most popular temple in Maharashtra after Mumbai’s Siddivinayak Temple. The size of the Ganesha idol here is similar to that of its Mumbai counterpart.  

There is an interesting story associated with the temple. A sweet trader by the name of Dagaduseth Halwai built this popular temple. He was a businessman and a close friend of a famous freedom fighter, Bal Gangadhar Tilak. It is believed that as an inspiration from this temple, Tilak called for a 10-day public festival (Ganeshotsav ) on Lord Ganesh .

This temple also has a connection with Bollywood. It is believed that the family of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan offered prayers here when he was facing life-threatening health problems. Coincidently, Dagaduseth Halwai built this temple in order to relieve him from the trauma of his son’s death.

The temple is revered by people from all over the state so be prepared to stand in the line for Ganesh Darshan (paying homage). However, the temple administration does a fine job at maintaining and moving these lines.

Despite the rush, it took me only about 15 minutes to reach the Ganesh Idol. 

A few things you may find useful when visiting the temple:

This temple is centrally located in a busy area of Pune.  S ome of the city’s major attractions such as Shaniwar Wada are only a walking distance away.

Shaniwar Wada

This is another significant monument in Pune. If you have watched Ranveer Singh’s Bollywood Movie, Bajirao Mastani, then this place will seem familiar.  

An architectural masterpiece, Shaniwar Wada was built in 1732, under the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire . The seven-storey capital building came under the British post their defeat in the Third War of Panipat in 1818. 

However, most of the parts of the palace were destroyed by several military attacks and a major fire in 1828. Despite being in ruins, Shaniwar Wada to this date continues to be an exquisite display of the brilliance of Indian architecture.

You can also enjoy some street shopping near Shaniwar Wada at Tulsi Baug and Fashion Street. Both these markets are located nearby.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple

The rock-cut temple was built in the 8 th Century and is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Shiva . The temple is carved out of a single rock which is what makes this temple extraordinary. 

Unlike Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Pataleshwar Cave temple is located within the city limits and is much easier to reach. It is added to the list of protected monuments by the Indian Government.    

The temple is located in the Jangli Maharaj Road area and is around 1 km from Shaniwar Wada. Despite being within the city limits,  I was amazed by the quietude around the temple. I could see a few people meditating as well.

Here are a few things that you must know about visiting this temple:

The circular Nand i mandap (temple porch) is one of the most unique features of this temple complex. You can spend some quiet time here before heading to your next destination.

Parvati Hill

If you want to see the view of Pune from a mountain, then Parvati hill is the perfect place to do so. Situated at a height of  2100 ft above sea level, this hillock has 5 temples and a museum.

The most important of them, the Parvati Temple is the oldest heritage structure in Pune and was built by the Peshwa Rulers of Maratha Empire. Devdeveshwara (Shiva and Parvati) are the deities of this temple.

This temple also provides Water Supply to half of Pune through their Water Tank.

You should visit the hill either in the morning or in the evening. Sunrise and sunsets are the best time to visit the hill.

Pune One Day Trip Itinerary for Shopaholics: Option 3

The third option for Pune one day trip itinerary is for travellers who love shopping. Pune is the perfect place for shopaholics. The city fulfils the needs of both luxurious as well as budget shoppers.

Since my current blog is all about travelling to Pune on a budget, the best option is street shopping. Street shopping in Pune is a great experience. There are a number of local markets all across the city that will keep you busy on your one day Pune trip.

Here are my favourite budget markets that you can include in your Pune one day trip itinerary:

Other than these, there are several other pocket-friendly and high-end markets to explore in Pune. If time and budget allow, you could explore them too.

Hong Kong Lane

Hong Kong Lane is a narrow lane connecting JM Road to FC road. At its one end is Citypride R Deccan cinema and the other end is Kaka Halwai’s shop.

This is a great place if you wish to buy mobile phone accessories , women’s shoes, jewellery, sunglasses, and handbags.

I bought a pretty cool Batman phone cover for just 100 INR!

Hong Kong Lane is not very long and it will take you only about an hour to shop in this place.

Fergusson College Road

Also called FC Road, this is one of the most sought-after budget shopping destinations in Pune.  The road is mostly frequented by students and youngsters. You can shop for several things including footwear, clothes and accessories . 

The quality of things is good too if you shop carefully. I used the slippers bought (Cost: 200 INR) from this market for almost a year.

Fergusson College Road place also happens to have some of the best eating joints in Pune City. So, you can enjoy some delicious meals while you shop around the place. 

Laxmi Road Market is one of the oldest markets in Pune. If you are looking to buy sarees in Pune, this is the place to be. You can also shop for jewellery, footwear etc. while munching at some street-side eateries.

You can buy jeans for as low as 600 INR, dresses for around 250 INR, junk jewellery for 100 INR and more. This place is a shopper’s paradise.

Some of the shops on Laxmi Road may remain closed during the afternoon, so, avoid visiting between 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Tulsi Baugh is another old and famous street shopping destination in Pune. It is located near the Dagduseth Ganesh Temple and is generally very crowded over the weekends. You can buy many things at affordable prices including home decor items, jewellery , footwear and clothing.

This is a great place to buy souvenirs. I bought Ittars for 50 INR  (mini chemical-free perfumes), miniature antiques for 100-200 INR and saree pins for 50 INR. I don’t think it can get cheaper than this!  

There are many eateries around the Tulsi Baug market that make the place even more interesting.

Fashion Street

There are two markets in Pune named Fashion Street. One is located near Shaniwar Wada Kasab Peth and the other one is located near MG Road Camp. Both these markets are great options for buying fashionable clothing, footwear and accessories in Pune. You will find all the latest trends at rock bottom prices in these markets.

You can choose between any one of these depending on what is easily accessible.

Just like the one in Mumbai, Fashion Street is also full of the latest designs and fashion clothing. No wonder this place is packed with college students.

There are hundreds of stalls at Fashion Street, make sure you compare the prices and designs. Also, haggling really works here!

Ac commodation and transport form a major chunk of travel costs. However, you can cut the costs by planning wisely. Here are several recommendations that will help you cut costs on your Pune one day trip.

Budget Accommodation Options in Pune

There are many accommodation options in Pune. The best budget options for backpackers and budget travellers are guesthouses and hostels.

However, when choosing the stay, try to choose the stay that is accessible through transport facilities and restaurants, in order to avoid spending an extra amount on transport.

Try and stay near the Deccan area, since it is centrally located. If not, Koregaon is also a great option too.

The public transportation system is not that great in Pune. Although local buses run regularly between stations, they are super crowded and it is almost impossible to get inside them.

The Metro is not completely functional in the city. This leaves us with only one budget option- the Auto Rickshaws .

Auto Rickshaws are readily available and are the best option for travelling to shorter distances within the city. The best way to book an autorickshaw is to do it through the App-based aggregators such as Ola and Uber. You can download these apps on your phone and book autos or taxis at relatively lower prices.

Of the sixteen caves, the eight cave, known as the Great Chaitya, is the most popular and the highlight of the caves. It is 45 metres long and 14 metres tall. It hosts a large prayer hall and also boasts of various intricate sculptures. These caves are also popular for its horse-shoe shaped ceilings, the ruins of Ashokan pillar with its stone facade and an arched gateway in between.

8. Ekvira temple
