What to Look for in a Dog Bowl for Travel

How we tested travel water bowls for dogs, why trust the spruce pets.

Mary Jo DiLonardo / The Spruce Pets

Whether you’re going on a road trip or a hike in the woods, your dog needs to stay hydrated, just like you do. Depending on where you’re going and what you’re doing, travel water bowls and bottles are more convenient than lugging along your pet’s normal bowl .

We tested and researched dozens of containers to find the best travel water bowls, evaluating them on durability, material, portability, and ease of cleaning. Our top pick, the Leashboss Splashless Water Bowl, features food-safe silicone, a broad lip to keep it from spilling, and a geometric design to prevent tipping.

Best Overall

Leashboss splashless travel dog water bowl.

Mostly splashless

Doesn’t bend when you pick it up

Dishwasher-safe

Not recommended for flat-face, bearded, or giant breeds

The Leashboss Splashless has an interesting geometric design to help keep the bowl from tipping over in the car or even when a rowdy pup is stepping on it. The lip on the bowl helps keep water from sloshing out when you’re on the move. It doesn’t tip easily when you pick it up filled with water or when dogs are drinking. We’re not so sure the Leashboss is utterly splashless as it promises, but it does a pretty good job.

Made of soft silicone that is BPA-, PVC-, and phthalate-free, it has high sides and a tapered lip to keep water from spilling. It also has a skidproof base and holds more water than some of the other portable options. It’s dishwasher safe, but you might still have trouble cleaning out some of the slime that gathers in the pointy corners, so be sure to clean it regularly. This is one of the more attractive bowls, our testers thought.

Best Collapsible

Bonza large collapsible dog bowl.

Large capacity

Has hook for water bottle

1-year guarantee

Heavier than some collapsibles

Collapsible bowls are so convenient, just clip one on your belt loop, keep it in the pocket of your car, or stash it in your backpack. They’re just so easy.

We tested so many collapsible silicone bowls, and they were all fairly similar. They looked the same except for different colors, but many appeared to be made by the same company. This one stood out because of its large capacity and several other key features. The packaging says the silicone is food-safe and BPA-free, whereas we’re not so sure with some of the others we tried.

It’s bigger than the rest, so you don’t have to keep filling it if your dog is big or particularly thirsty. (But that also means it won’t fit in your back pocket like some smaller products.) There’s a carabiner plus a silicone tab that can hook around a disposable water bottle to make it easier to keep everything together. The bowl is backed by a one-year guarantee and is dishwasher safe.

Volume : 40 ounces, 50 ounces︱ Materials : Silicone︱ Colors : Navy

What Our Testers Say

“This was by far my favorite. The size is great and it held plenty of water, and I liked the convenient clip to carry it with you.” – Maureen Curtis, owner of a chocolate Lab

Best for the Car

Valterra water-hole pet dish.

Hard to spill or splash water

Made in the U.S.A.

Lid can be hard to snap on and off

This is the one water bowl that didn’t spill or splash water in the car, even around curves or on bouncy roads. The top ring has an inner lip that keeps water from sloshing out. That lid can sometimes be difficult to pry on and off for cleaning, but once it’s on, you know that it’s very secure. Both pieces of the bowl are top-rack dishwasher safe.

The bowl is made from hard plastic and comes in either light blue or beige. One tester who often drives with dogs in the car said this has long been one of her favorites on the road.

Volume : 32 ounces︱ Materials : Plastic︱ Colors : Blue, beige

“It’s the only bowl that’s truly splashproof. I use it in the car and camper, and mostly it just stays in my car all the time and has for years.”– Judy Duhr, director of Speak Rescue and Sanctuary, who is always on the road with her dogs or transporting foster dogs

Best for Car (Runner-Up)

Kurgo no spill dog travel bowl.

Wedge bottom to stay flat on car seat

Can be difficult to empty of water

This colorful silicone bowl is angled like a wedge to keep it flat on a car seat. It also has a wide lip to prevent water from sloshing everywhere. It works pretty well, although water might splash out on bumpy roads or sharp turns. The soft silicone makes it easy to cram into a backpack or tuck into a suitcase.

Interestingly, because it’s splash-free, it can be hard to empty when your dog is done with it. Water keeps filling up inside the lip. But it is dishwasher-safe, so you know it’s easy to clean, and grime won’t collect inside the edge.

Volume : 24 ounces︱ Materials : Silicone︱ Colors : Blue, red

Best Bottle

Malsipree dog water bottle.

Fits in car cupholder

Can use it one-handed

Unused water goes back into bottle

Not dishwasher-safe

Our testers were surprised they liked this bottle so much. It’s easy to use just one-handed and fits in a cupholder, which makes it convenient in the car. When your dog is thirsty, just turn the bottle on its side, press the button, and fill the lid with water. If your pup doesn’t drink it all, press the button again and let the water pour back down into the bottle.

There’s a lock to prevent water from spilling out and a strap for carrying. This is made of BPA-free plastic and can’t be cleaned in the dishwasher. It comes in two sizes, but the smaller one is really only useful for small dogs or very short trips.

Volume : 12 ounces or 19 ounces︱ Materials : Plastic︱ Colors : Blue, pink

“I really didn’t expect to like this at all, but I really loved it. I was easily able to drive down the road and give my dog water right, and keep it in the cupholder.” – Judy Duhr, director of Speak Rescue and Sanctuary, who is always on the road with her dogs or transporting foster dogs

Best Bottle (Runner-Up)

Kong h2o insulated dog water bottle.

BPA- and phthalate-free

Water pours easily back in the bottle

Needs two hands to use

Hand wash only

This water bottle is insulated, so it keeps your pup’s drink cool on the trail, in the car, or at the beach . But the stainless steel also makes it heavier than the other bottle, so it’s a trade-off. The screw-off cap doubles as a bowl. Just pour water from the bottle into it, and if your pup doesn’t finish it all, it’s relatively easy to pour it back in.

Unlike the MalsiPree bottle, this one requires two hands to use, so it’s a little more unwieldy. The whole set is BPA- and phthalate-free and can be recycled. There’s a carabiner clip to attach to your backpack, and it comes in four colors. One tester with a large dog said her pup had trouble getting enough water out of the small lid-bowl.

Volume : 15 ounces︱ Materials : Plastic, stainless steel︱ Colors : Black, blue, orange, red

Best Budget

Outward hound port-a-bowl collapsible bowl.

Courtesy of Chewy

Very lightweight

Inexpensive

Will leak if left with water too long

This lightweight, foldable bowl is easy to tuck in your pocket. It takes up very little space, and it’s incredibly affordable. Because it’s made out of nylon, it’s only meant to hold water for short bursts, not to sit out in the car or your campsite as a water bowl. Leave the water to sit too long, and the wetness will just seep through.

You can spot clean it or machine wash it in cold water if it gets gross, but it takes some time to dry out. (You might not want to put it right back into your pocket.) It’s not incredibly rugged, and the bowl will collapse if a dog plays or pushes it too much. But for the price and the convenience, it’s useful to have on hand.

Volume : 48 ounces︱ Materials : Nylon︱ Colors : Green/gray

Best Splurge

Yeti boomer 8 dog bowl.

Dick's Sporting Goods

Made of heavy stainless steel

Lots of colors

More expensive than most

This sturdy and heavy stainless steel bowl is definitely a splurge. But people who own them think they’re pretty impressive. The bottom has a solid, recessed nonslip ring, unlike others that have small or too easily removed rubber feet. The bowl comes in all sorts of colors, in addition to just stainless silver. It’s dishwasher safe and easy to wash by hand.

Although the bowl isn’t insulated, it seems to keep water cooler than some other bowls. It’s definitely more expensive than most, but it seems like it’s durable and long-lasting. It’s not necessarily for in the car (water sloshes) or for hiking (too heavy), but some fans like to take the sturdy bowl on trips for when they arrive at a campground or final destination because it holds up and is easy to clean. Others use it in the car but just fill it up on stops. “If this had a lid, it would be absolutely perfect,” says one tester who travels all the time with her pups.

Volume : 32 ounces, 64 ounces︱ Materials : Stainless steel︱ Colors : Black, pink, red, coral, olive, orange, navy, green, seafoam, stainless

Best Fabric Bowl

Ruffwear quencher dog bowl.

Machine-washable

Light and packable

No carabiner, just a hook

Made by outdoor gear company Ruffwear, this collapsible square bowl is made out of rugged polyester fabric with a waterproof lining. It’s easy to fold up and put into your backpack or pocket when you’re out and about. And if your dog is messy, you can throw it in the washing machine.

There’s an integrated loop for carrying the bowl but no carabiner to attach it to your gear. The flexible bowl holds up pretty well when filled but can be tipped over by very eager pups. It doesn’t take too long to dry out. It gets added points for the attractive, rich colors.

Volume : .75 liter (25 ounces), 1 liter (34 ounces), 2.5 liters (85 ounces)︱ Materials : Polyester fabric︱ Colors : Blue, brick, teal

Best for Messy Drinkers

Lumoleaf dog water bowl.

Deters spills and splashes

Slows down fast drinkers

Ring sometimes snaps off

Water seeps into floating disc

The LumoLeaf has a floating disc that controls water flow, which helps keep it from spilling but also prevents your pet from gulping down loads of liquid. Instead, he has to lap it up slowly as the top refills. Dogs might need a second to figure out how this works because only a little water is visible at the top of the bowl.

The floating disc keeps water levels mostly even, even on rocky surfaces or in the car. The bowl is top-rack dishwasher safe. The rim can get grimy, and the floating disc can trap water, so the manufacturer recommends it be washed about every three days. That includes taking the floating disc apart to wash it. That’s pretty high maintenance for everyday use.

Volume : 35 ounces︱ Materials : Plastic︱ Colors : Gray, white

"It took a minute for my dog to figure out how to use this. (He had to watch the foster puppies drink first!) He’s such a messy drinker that this forced him to slow down and lap a little at a time, which means less water all over the floor." – Mary Jo DiLonardo, Product Tester

KindTail Portable Dog Bowls

Lid with handle and two bowls all stack together

Microwave and dishwasher safe

Stays put while dog eats and drinks

Takes up more space than collapsible bowls

Inspired by bento box design, KindTails's Portabowls sets are made to keep food concealed while traveling nesting one bowl inside another and keeping to all secure with a dual-purpose lid. Once it's time to dine, the lid is easy to unscrew and turn upside to serve as a sturdy base for the smaller bowl with food. The larger external bowl can hold up to 18 or 40 ounces of water depending on your size selection (small or large). The larger bowl and the top of the lid both have a textured silicone surface to secure the bowls in place.

While testing the portable storage system, the set securely transported wet dog food without any spilling, and our dog participant enjoyed a dining experience that more closely resembled the ceramic bowls they use at home.

The Portabowls comes in five colors: rose pink, blue, light green, lilac, and grey, and two sizes. Small comes with a 10 ounce bowl and a 20 ounce bowl, while large comes with an 18 and a 40 ounce bowl. Both include a corresponding lid equipped with a handle. The set is made out of food-grade recycled BPA-free polypropylene and it is microwave and dishwasher safe. These portable kit is ideal for travel, picnics, and outdoor dining, but the set takes up more space than collapsible bowls.

Volume : 10 and 20 ounces (small); 18 and 40 ounces (large)︱ Materials : Polypropylene, silicone︱ Colors : Rose pink, blue, light green, grey, lilac

Final Verdict

We recommend the Leashboss Splashless Travel Water Bowl for the car and in your backpack. This mostly splashless silicone bowl has a design that keeps it from tipping or leaking. For convenience, we also like the Bonza Collapsible , a large-capacity silicone bowl that comes with a year guarantee.

Most collapsible bowls are made out of either silicone or fabric. Sturdier bowls can be crafted of plastic or stainless steel. Look for food-grade materials that are BPA- and phthalate-free. Know that if your dog likes to chew and play with his bowls, the allure of silicone and fabric (and even plastic!) can be tempting.

Portability

Some travel bowls are all about portability. They’re lightweight and either fold or collapse, so you can tuck them into a backpack or your pocket—which is essential when it comes to air travel products for dogs . They often have carabiners or loops so you can clip them onto your gear. But other travel bowls are more designed for car travel, with splashless rims and other features that keep water in on bumpy roads.

Splash-Free

Bowls that are meant to be used in the car typically have a rim or special lid that keeps water from sloshing out. Some of these work better than others, and it all depends on how much water you put in the bowl, how eagerly your dog drinks, and how bumpy your journey.

Travel bowls often can hold less water than the bowl your dog uses at home, particularly one you’d use on a hike or in the car. The bowls we tested held from 12 to 64 ounces. If you have a small dog, the lower capacity should be convenient, but you might have to refill it several times for a larger dog. Also, check the size of the opening to make sure your dog’s snout isn’t too big for a tiny bowl.

You might not be able to pop a bowl into a dishwasher when you’re on the road, but be sure to clean it as soon as you get home. Not all bowls are dishwasher safe, and some might have rims or corners where slime can accumulate. If a bowl isn’t dishwasher safe, be sure it can be washed by hand thoroughly and easily.

The Spruce Pets has tested more than 700 pet products, in both our testing New York testing lab, and in home trials with volunteer testers and their pets. For travel water bowls, we first researched the most well-reviewed and bestselling travel water bowls available, eventually narrowing down our selection to 21 top candidates.

We then developed a methodology for testing each water bowl, evaluating each for usability, durability, and how easy each was to clean. The travel water bowls were subsequently tested in a range of environments by dog product expert Mary Jo DiLonardo, who was able to demo each bowl with both adult dogs and puppies. She subsequently evaluated each bowl, using both a numerical scoring system and detailed notes. From this, we narrowed down the field further, and selected our favorites to recommend.

For this story, we purchased nearly two dozen travel bowls that are popular with dog owners we know and have great ratings online. We asked dog owners to use them with their pets in the car, while out walking, and even at home. We rated them on effectiveness, durability, ease of cleaning, and overall value. Some didn’t make the cut early on, but there were some pretty popular choices.

This article was written by Mary Jo DiLonardo , who often reviews dog products for Spruce Pets. The proud mom of a rescue dog, she has fostered around four dozen dogs and puppies. She has tried lots of different bowls with her own dog and foster pups and is always looking for the most durable and effective pet products. For more than 25 years, DiLonardo has covered a wide range of topics focused on nature, pets, science, and anything that helps make the world a better place.

Collapsible Dog Bowls

One of the biggest challenges of bringing a regular dog bowl on your adventures is the amount of space they take up. Plus, they’re heavy! We’ve designed collapsible dog bowls, like the Drive Takeaway Food Bowl and Water Bowl , which are lighter and more space efficient.

Puppy Travel Bowls

The Fold-A-Bowl dog bowl is the perfect travel companion. Not only can it be compacted to take up minimum space, but it can also clip directly to a travel bag, belt loop, or EzyDog leash to remain on-hand for whenever you need it. When your dog gets thirsty during a hike or run, it can deploy in seconds to keep them nourished.

Even little dogs need to keep a steady diet. EzyDog travel bowls include smaller options for the littlest 4-pawed adventure companions. Choose a small Fold-A-Bowl for the lightest and most compact option or store your food in the 1-liter takeaway bowl for when it’s mealtime and pack it up when they’re done eating.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

It’s best if your dog drinks from their own bowl. Without knowing what dogs have licked a public bowl, or how often they’re cleaned, they could be exposed to contaminates. Having your own water source for them is the best way to know their water is clean and fresh.

Dogs identify bowls as something where they can receive food and water. Traveling with a bowl gives you an option to share water with your dog whereas it might otherwise be scarce. Having travel bowls will encourage your dog to eat and drink while on the go, while also preventing spilling and wasting food and water resources.

The Fold-A-Bowl is the easiest to carry and easiest to stow when running with dogs. It’s ultra-light and compact, plus it can be attached to the Road Runner Leash for bounce-free carry.

Easy to clean, this travel bowl is dishwasher safe – just toss it in for a cycle and it will be fully disinfected and good as new!

Advantages of dog travel bowls

Hydration is a really big issue during the whole year, but even more so during the summer months. The same things go for both us and our pets, and even though we all enjoy the sunny days of summer, it’s no excuse to neglect our pet’s basic needs. When we decide to take our dog with us, whether it is a cross country RV journey or a traditional camping trip, you need to ensure that clean water is always on hand. Dehydration is no joke – fail to provide water to your pet and you risk lethargy, exhaustion, disorientation, and a string of issues you really don’t need. This is enough to let you know that water is always needed close at hand, even when you think your pet can manage a few hours without it- they really shouldn’t.

And what better way to offer the water to your pet than in a nice portable dog travel bowl? Always there when you need it, this accessory is a quick and easy solution to all water and food situations. No more bulky sets or huge bags – these collapsible designs are extremely easy to carry around and will fit into a bag, a backpack, and even your pockets. And even though they can be collapsed to a fraction of their size, they still don’t lose any of their toughness and durability. And when you are out and about, camping or in the park, durability really comes as an important aspect. And as we all know, durability is the big deal with all dog accessories – they need to be able to withstand the tossing and turning, biting and nibbling, and all else in between.

Features to look for in dog travel bowls

There are some essential details that make dog travel bowls really worth the money, and these features all need to be taken into account. This will ensure that your purchase works well for your needs and gives you the best bang for your buck. While it is always better to invest in a pricier option – smart investments that actually help us and our pets are always the proper choices- you don’t have to break the bank to get a quality set of bowls that will last you a long time. The market today is filled with fantastic options and unique new designs, and making your choice can be challenging. That’s why you have to know what you’re looking for to make the right choice- and these are some features that all dog travel bowls should have:

With travel bowls, durability becomes imperative. With traveling, camping, and general carrying about, these bowls do see a lot of wear and tear. And not to mention the damage your pet can make – the nibbling and chewing in moments of boredom happen all too often. Luckily, many brands today offer unique FDA approved silicone and rubber solutions with durable plastic elements that stood up well to all tests canines put them through. Of course, it is really important to opt for approved materials that are food grade and safe, so don’t sacrifice safety over durability’s sake.

Size is equally as important. Always consider the size and breed of your pet when you are making your purchase. Getting a too small or too large bowl can defeat the purpose, and leave your pupper shortchanged. Small ones simply won’t contain enough water or kibble, and having to always refill them will be a hassle. But an overly large travel bowl is difficult to carry around and often cannot be collapsible. Opting for something in the middle is often the best possibility.

There are several unique design options available on the market today. You can opt for whatever fits your needs, but in general, the collapsible travel bowl design is the most common option. Not only is it flexible and durable, but can be collapsed to a fraction of its true size – and that makes traveling that much easier. You can also look for nifty carrying hooks or carabiner clips. With these, you will not risk losing your bowls, and you can even hook them to a backpack for easy and hands-free carrying. Of course, colors and patterns also fall into the overall design- you get to pick something both pretty and functional at the same time.

Portability

Now, what would a travel dog bowl be without being portable? You want to find a lightweight, small, and inconspicuous version that won’t be a hassle to carry around wherever and however you go. On camping trips, there are already enough of odds and ends and bits and bobs that you need to take care of. That is why a simple pair of dog travel bowls will be no nuisance whatsoever. And for anyone who is always on the go and loves traveling comfortably – this means a lot.

What is the Best Type of ID for My Dog While Travelling?

What is the Best Type of ID for My Dog While Travelling?

Travelling with our dogs is an exciting experience, but it also comes with responsibility – ensuring they are safe at every turn. Whether you’re heading out on a road trip together, camping with your canine companion by your side, jet-setting on a flight, or hiking your local trails, one of the most critical aspects to consider is proper identification. While traditional ID tags have been a reliable choice and are often seen as the standard ID solution, there are many innovative options for today’s dog parents to choose from.In this article, we’ll explore the significance of dog identification during travel and delve into many of the options available beyond just traditional hang tags. From microchips and QR codes to GPS tracking devices, discover the many ways to keep your pup safe and accounted for on your next adventure. Why is Dog ID Important When Travelling? Before we get into the specifics of different ID options for your pup, let’s start at the beginning. Why is dog ID necessary while travelling, and how can something so simple keep your dog safe? Every dog parent should be aware of the risk of their pup going missing. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 10 million pets go missing every year in the United States. While it is always a frightening experience when a pet goes missing, imagine it happening somewhere far from home that you and your dog aren’t familiar with. You don’t know where they will go or where to start looking. It can happen in the blink of an eye despite taking all precautions. Kennel locks fail, leashes break, and dogs can take off quickly when spooked. Even if your dog is picked up and taken to the local shelter eventually, that is only a piece of the puzzle in bringing them home safely. Without proper identification, the shelter workers have no way of knowing who this dog belongs to, whether they are a stray or someone’s beloved pet, or how to contact you to let you know that they have been found safe. Ensuring your dog has proper ID at all times can make all the difference in whether they are brought home safely.

What Shapes Your Dog’s Personality? Harvard Neuroscientists Reveal

What Shapes Your Dog’s Personality? Harvard Neuroscientists Reveal

No two dogs are the same – each pooch has a personality of their own, complete with unique quirks and traits. But why is your dog the way they are? What shapes their personality and character? Why do they behave in a unique way, even when they belong to a certain breed with a distinct set of traits? This is the question that Erin Hecht, assistant professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard, is trying to answer. She is doing this through  The Canine Brains Project and recently held a  talk - centered on canine neuroscience - that was organized by Harvard’s Brain Science Initiative.According to Hecht, dogs have the potential to teach us so much about brain development, especially considering the fact that they were domesticated about 20,000 to 40,000 years before the present – which, on the evolutionary timeline, is quite recent. “Darwin saw dogs as a window on mechanisms of evolution,” Hecht said. “When we’re looking at dogs, as a natural experiment and brain behavior evolution all we have to do is look at their brains and see what evolution did in order to satisfy those selection requirements.”Hecht’s efforts were benefited by her lab, which performs MRI scans of dog brains – roughly 100 per year. They also conduct owner surveys that examine dogs’ work skills, especially those “ancient” ones, like hunting, guarding, herding, fetching, and so on. All this is then compared to breed parameters, like body size, skill size, and overall shape. “About 80 percent of the dogs living on the planet today are what’s known as village dogs. These are free-ranging animals that live as human commensals. So they’re living within human society, but they’re not pets,” Hecht said.Through such research, Hecht is hoping to determine what exactly shapes a dog’s personality. Through her lab work, she connects personality and skill differences in dogs to six special regions of their brains:-the regions controlling drive and reward -olfaction and taste-spatial navigation-social communication and coordination-fight or flight -and olfaction and vision“There has been very strong recent specific selection in individual breeds rather than founding effects in ancestral founding populations,” Hecht said. “So then we can look at behavior and ask whether the types of behaviors that different lineages have been selected for historically … [explain] each dog’s anatomy and these six brain networks. And it seems like there are some interesting relationships here.”But most importantly, it is concluded that these neural pathways are greatly impacted by the shape and size of a dog’s skull. “It stands to reason that if you’re manipulating the shape of a skull, you’re going to be manipulating the shape of the brain,” Hecht said. “But this confirms that dogs with these extreme skull morphotypes have impacts on their brain anatomy that likely affects behavior.”She also adds that even though some dogs have a brain “makeup” that suggests a unique disposition, it doesn’t “lock” them into a set behavior pattern. This is especially true for working skills. “Training is almost always necessary. I have yet to hear of any particular breed of working dog, where it’s just born knowing how to do its job,” Hecht said. So, a look “inside” your doggo’s brain might reveal why they are just the way they are. Would you be curious enough to let scientists take a peek?

How Do I Know If My Dog Has Frostbite?

How Do I Know If My Dog Has Frostbite?

Cold weather affects our pets even more than it does us – dogs are much more sensitive to harsh weather elements and can be especially affected by the freezing winter cold. Depending on their size and the thickness of their coat, dogs can be more or less endangered when the scales go way down below zero, and for some dogs, going out in subzero temperatures can be quite risky. So much so, that they can even get frostbite. While frostbite in dogs can range from mild to severe, it’s a condition you can’t ignore – you need to know how to quickly spot signs of frostbite in dogs and make sure to provide first aid ASAP to prevent any permanent damage. How Do I Know If My Dog Has Frostbite?Exposing your dog to extremely cold temperatures is always risky. While there are certain breeds, like  huskies, who are adapted to extreme weather conditions, dogs are generally not ideally suited for freezing temperatures and as such are at risk of getting frostbite. Frostbite is a result of skin and tissues freezing, and it usually affects the most exposed parts of the dog’s body, like the paws, ears, nose, and tail. However, it can’t always be easy to spot frostbite in the earliest stages – usually, pet owners realize they’re dealing with frostbite when the damage is already done. Try and keep an eye out for the following symptoms if your pet has been out in the cold:Swelling:When frostbite sets in, the affected area will often swell. This happens when the top layers of the skin and tissue become gradually frozen. Likewise, the swollen area could feel firm or hard to the touch.Coldness:The areas that are frostbitten will feel much colder to the touch than the rest of the body. This can be the first and the most obvious sign of frostbite.Skin Ulcers and Blisters:These nasty growths can appear when frostbite has really taken hold of an affected part. As the frostbitten flesh begins to thaw, it also blisters. Limping:When your dog limps in cold weather, it can be the first indication that something is wrong. This is usually due to the soft tissue on the paws being exposed to freezing ground. Discolored Skin:Another tell-tale sign of frostbite is the discoloration of the skin on the affected area. The main cause of this is the reduced blood flow to the area. The skin in this case will appear gray, pale, or bluish.  It goes without saying that frostbite is very dangerous. If you suspect it in your dog, please seek the help of a veterinarian at once. It is paramount that you leave professionals to take care of your pet, rather than to attempt to fix the situation on your own. Things like hot water, direct heat, and other attempts to reheat the flesh quickly will only lead to more damage. Also, keep in mind that the signs of frostbite can take several days to appear. This is mostly true for small areas of flesh being affected, such as the tip of the tail, or the ears.

Pet Obesity Study Shows Promise and Surprising Links With Humans

Pet Obesity Study Shows Promise and Surprising Links With Humans

If you thought that your chubby doggo is incredibly cute, you might want to consider what’s hiding behind that adorable exterior.  Pet obesity is a real thing, and it is a major health hazard that many dogs experience in their lifetime. And, sadly, a lot of it is connected to improper care and diet. To show us just how big of a problem it has become, the latest study from the  Association for Pet Obesity Prevention revealed that in the U.S. alone, around 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were overweight or obese! However, recently conducted research shows that there might be a way to battle the obesity pandemic – with certain strains of probiotics that can help curb pet obesity, especially when dogs are in question. A research team from Seoul National University's Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, College of Agriculture and Life Science, conducted a study investigating the effects of probiotics on canine obesity. They discovered two strains that appeared to have weight-reducing properties in obese dogs. To assess the probiotic potential of these strains, the researchers employed a lifespan analysis using Caenorhabditis elegans, a genetic model known for its simplicity in genetic manipulation and shorter lifespan compared to other animal models. Their findings were detailed in a  paper published in the Microbiology Spectrum journal. Thanks to the positive outcome of this research, a new hope was discovered for doggos struggling with excess weight. The use of Caenorhabditis Elegans offers “interventions aimed at enhancing metabolic health in various mammals”, according to the research team. What is more, the effects could be applied to cats, humans, and other mammals, since C. Elegans “serves as a human homolog model”. In general, this whole study could prove to be beneficial to several animal species, as well as humans, making its significance multifold. However, the exact way that bacteria affects weight is not entirely understood. Even though some studies show that certain strains will slow weight gain, researchers were still unable to find a connection between bacteria and weight.Nevertheless, the study is proving to be a major leap forward when pet obesity is considered. There is plenty of potential in this study, and further efforts could change the way dog obesity is experienced – or possibly even root it out for good!

When is the Best Time to Start Puppy Training?

When is the Best Time to Start Puppy Training?

Training your pet is a very important task as it will shape them into a friendly, obedient dog that’s a pleasure to be around. While it does require a lot of patience and effort, training your dog on time makes your life as an owner much easier and prevents a myriad of behavior issues and other problems down the road. Of course, it goes without saying that you should start training early, while your doggo is still a puppy. That is the time when they gladly soak up all the information and eagerly learn. But when exactly is the best time to start puppy training? You can’t do it while they are still teeny-tiny, nor should you wait too long. What is the ideal middle ground? Let’s find out. When is the Best Time to Start Puppy Training?Puppies are like sponges, soaking up information from their environment and their owner, so early training can set a solid foundation for good behavior and establish obedience throughout their lives. Ideally, you can start basic training such as housebreaking, socialization, and simple commands like "sit" and "stay" when your puppy is around 8 weeks old. This is the general “golden rule” that many owners stick by. When they reach that 2-month mark, it’s considered the ideal time for them to quickly grasp the commands you teach them. If you think that this could be “too early” to start training, you are wrong. There are numerous benefits to early training, and all of them are critical for your dog’s well-being and normal behavior. Here are just a few of them:SocializationEarly socialization is so important for puppies. It allows them to learn how to properly interact with other dogs and humans and prevents aggression and behavioral problems later in life. During this period you should expose your pet to new environments, sounds, and sights.BondingTraining sessions are a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your puppy. Spending time together, teaching them new things, and rewarding good behavior builds trust and a positive relationship.Preventing Behavioral IssuesIf you spot behavior issues while your dog is still a puppy, it is easier to prevent them from becoming nasty habits. As you teach your pet proper behavior and as you set up boundaries, you will prevent many nasty issues from forming, such as excess chewing, barking, or disobedience. If you already notice chewing issues that stem from teething, make sure to redirect their attention to an appropriate chew toy and use  puppy no-chew deterrent sprays to help you shift their focus.

This Special Camera Reveals How Our Pets See the World Around Them

This Special Camera Reveals How Our Pets See the World Around Them

Have you ever wondered how your pet  sees the world around them? We all know that the eyes of dogs, cats, and all other animals are not the same as ours, and they often see the world in a very different way. While all we could do is imagine and theorize up until now, thanks to a new breakthrough in technology we will be able to take a peek through the eyes of animals!Scientists have  invented a special camera that uses a unique combination of state-of-the-art hardware and software, in order to create videos and images that show us exactly how certain animals see. For example, with this latest tech, you will be able to see the vivid world of colors that are seen through the eyes of birds and bees. One of the recent demonstrations revealed how a UV-sensitive vision of a bird renders an orange sulfur butterfly - the result is more than striking, as it doesn’t look like anything related to human vision.

42% of Pet Parents Feel Caring for Pets is More Stressful Than Kids!

42% of Pet Parents Feel Caring for Pets is More Stressful Than Kids!

Pets can be an incredible addition to any family, but they can also come with a bit of stress. In fact, a recent study revealed that nearly half of pet parents shared that caring for their pet was more stressful than caring for their partner or even their children! What is it about our pets that worries us the most? That was the goal of the recent survey conducted by OnePoll and ElleVet Sciences. They polled 2000 pet owners, asking them questions about their relationships, their pets, and the stress that they experience in their role. The answers revealed that the top three sources of stress in most people’s lives include their finances (54%), their job or career (49%), and their ability to care for their pets (42%). The survey went on to discuss reasons for being stressed about our pets, and there was one concern that the majority of respondents shared – as pet parents, we worry about our ability to provide the care our pets will need in their senior years. As our pets get older, their needs often change. We can see this in the way they act and the activities they engage in. A once hyperactive, high-energy dog may start to slow down and sleep more. A dog that easily jumped onto the couch most of their lives now requires stairs or a ramp to get up for cuddle time. Not all changes that come with aging are inherently bad, but 68% of parents say watching their pet age and suffer would be more hurtful to them than losing their job (61%) or breaking up with their partner (61%). “Supporting your pet through all stages of life can minimize their stress, allowing you to create more happy memories together,” shared Amanda Howland, co-founder and CCO of ElleVet Sciences. “As your pet gets older, it’s important to be proactive in identifying the signs of aging, such as difficulty moving, trouble sleeping, and social isolation. It’s all about more time, and more quality time with your pet, and for them, aging and stress are intertwined so taking care of discomfort-related aging and cognitive decline can reduce their stress significantly.” The concern shared by the survey respondents (and other pet parents nationwide) clearly illustrates how important our pets are in our lives. While 73% of those surveyed described their pet as their “protector,” they serve many other vital roles in our lives – our best friends, sounding boards, cheerleaders, motivators, and companions. Your senior pet may require some changes around the home. Throw rugs can be used to provide traction on slippery floors. Safety gates are key for blocking off unsafe areas like staircases that could lead to injury. Caring for our senior pets may be stressful, but it’s also an opportunity to repay our pets for everything they have given us throughout their lives. Even just setting aside time in your schedule each day for a walk around the block followed by a short cuddle on the couch can positively impact their lives, reducing stress and promoting better health. “Just like us, pets’ needs can change as they age, so their daily routines, diet, and exercise may need to be adjusted to improve their quality of life, as well as adding high-quality supplements,” Howland explained. “Small adjustments can ensure your pet’s golden years are less stressful for both themselves and their human companion.”

Pandemic Puppies Are Behaving Badly, Study Shows

Pandemic Puppies Are Behaving Badly, Study Shows

Puppies bought during the COVID-19 pandemic are more likely to exhibit one or more problem behaviors, a new study suggests. Research by the Royal Veterinary Colledge (RVC) has found that four in five (82%) owners of pandemic puppies have resorted to using punishment-based training methods to try to curb their dog’s problem behavior. The study found that moving the dog or shouting at them were the most commonly used aversive training methods. Other owners reported using water pistols, rattle bottles, and choke chains. Only 18% of owners who participated in the study said they didn’t use any aversive training methods or aids. Not only are aversive training techniques such as yelling at the dog or pulling its lead ineffective but they are also linked to further behavioral problems. The survey which was funded by the Battersea animal rescue charity asked more than 1,007 UK dog owners to list problem behaviors exhibited by their dogs. The list consisted of 24 problem behaviors reported by the owners. They ranged from control behaviors ( pulling on the leash) and attention-seeking behaviors, to aggressive behaviors and fear behaviors (anxiety around other dogs or people).Almost all (97%) owners said their dog exhibited at least one problem behavior from the list. At 21 months, owners on average reported five behavioral problems, while 20% of owners reported that their dogs had eight or more problem behaviors. According to owners, pulling on the leash is the most common problem behavior (67%), followed by jumping on people (57%), and not coming back when called (52%).Denise Mariner-Chappell got a Labrador retriever Ted during the pandemic. Strict lockdown measures made it hard to properly train and socialize her new pooch.“He’s a crazy dog when he’s out,” she said. “He’s just manic. He just wants to play and sniff, and everything, but not with humans.” Dr. Rowena Packer, the lead author of the study explained that problem behaviors are very common in pandemic puppies. In many cases, owners exacerbate these issues by using punishment-based training methods. “Although we understand these problem behaviors can be very frustrating for owners, they are often a sign a dog is struggling to cope or that they haven’t been taught an appropriate response in a situation, rather than dogs intentionally behaving badly,” she added.Packer warned that punishing the dog can make it anxious and fearful and cause it to develop further behavioral problems, including aggression. According to Robert Bays, Battersea’s senior animal behavior manager, the charity has seen an influx in dogs with behavioral problems coming into centers. These pups are suffering from separation anxiety and show other problem behaviors, which can be linked to training challenges brought on by the pandemic. “Without the right kind of positive training and support, a small behavioral problem in a puppy or a dog can quickly escalate into a serious issue, so we are deeply concerned with this study’s findings that so many owners are using aversive training methods,” said Bays. This training approach can cause additional behavioral problems in adulthood and also significantly damage the relationship between the dog and its owner. The study found that puppies who were still exhibiting problem behaviors by the age of 21 months were at a higher risk of being rehomed or euthanized. “A key piece of guidance arising from our study is that attending puppy classes is a vital way to support owners in using the best training techniques available.”Although many pandemic puppy owners missed these training classes due to lockdown restrictions there are thankfully many certified trainers who offer training classes for adult dogs. Join the PetGuide community. Is Peanut Butter Safe for Dogs?

Is Peanut Butter Safe for Dogs?

Ah, peanut butter –who doesn’t love a smear of this sticky butter on their toast? Whether you top it with bananas or jelly or something else altogether, spread on bread, mix in oatmeal, or add to smoothies, you likely enjoy the nutty goodness of peanut butter at least a few times a week. But can you share PB with your dog? While this tasty spread is generally safe for dogs as they have no issue eating peanuts in the form of butter, it’s the other ingredients that may be in the PB you’re eating that could harm them. This is what you should know before giving your pet peanut butter – whether as an ingredient of something else or on its own.Is Peanut Butter Safe for Dogs? To give you a short and straightforward answer, yes, peanut butter is safe for dogs when it’s made only out of peanuts as the single ingredient. However, that’s not always the case with commercially made peanut butter. To tweak its consistency, shelf life, or even modify its flavor, companies can add a variety of different ingredients to their peanut butter products, so it’s crucial to read the label before giving your pet even just a lick of peanut butter – and it wouldn't hurt to do so before eating it yourself, either. The most dangerous ingredient (for dogs) that could be added to peanut butter is  xylitol, or birch sugar, as it is sometimes labeled. This sweetener is highly toxic to dogs as even small amounts of xylitol can cause a rapid release of insulin, leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, and liver failure in dogs.Another thing that could be problematic about peanut butter for dogs is not a matter of a sneaky ingredient but the fact that it’s a high-fat food. If not given in moderation, peanut butter can largely contribute to obesity in dogs, and in turn, promote health issues such as  pancreatitis at worst and upset tummy at best. It is also important to note that some dogs may be allergic to peanuts, the same as is the case with us humans. If you are giving your pet peanut butter for the first time, monitor them for signs of allergic reactions, such as itching, redness, swelling, or gastrointestinal upset, and consult your veterinarian if concerns arise.Benefits of Peanut Butter for Dogs and How To Incorporate It In Your Dog’s DietIn addition to being yummy, peanut butter is also beneficial for dogs. It might be high in fat, but it is predominantly unsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which support skin and coat health, joint function, and immune system function in dogs. It is also a rich source of plant-based protein and will support your pet's overall health when given in moderation. So how do you ensure you don’t overdo it with PB and that your pet reap only the benefits of this nutty spread? While an excellent reward to utilize when training with positive reinforcement methods, peanut butter should be given sparingly rather than every time your pooch does a good job. Use a small amount – a teaspoon will work well for the job. Alternatively, if your pet loves the taste of peanut butter but you’re trying to maintain their weight, opting for peanut butter-flavored treats is a perfect compromise. My dogs prefer crunchy treats and are big PB fans, so one of their favorites is  American Journey Peanut Butter Recipe Grain-Free Oven Baked Crunchy Biscuit Dog Treats.

Blue Ridge Beef Recalls Kitten and Puppy Food Due to Bacteria

Blue Ridge Beef Recalls Kitten and Puppy Food Due to Bacteria

Blue Ridge Beef, one of the foremost pet food companies in North Carolina, decided to recall their 2-pound kitten and puppy food because of a serious potential threat of listeria and salmonella in their kibble. The pet food in question was distributed to locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.Unfortunately, North Carolina Department of Agriculture discovered a serious issue when analyzing their product, realizing that one lot of each of the food products was positive for salmonella and listeria, on December 15th. This included kitten food lots “N24 1114-N24 1224”, of 2-lb logs of “Kitten Grind” (UPC 8 54298 00101 6), and “Kitten Mix” (UPC UPC 8 54298 00143 6). Also included was the “Puppy Mix” (UPC 8 54298 00169 6).The action was swift to pull these products from the shelves, as both listeria and salmonella can be very dangerous to pets who consume the contaminated food. It can also be harmful to humans who touch the food as well, especially pregnant women and children. Here Are the 10 Rarest Dog Breeds in America

Here Are the 10 Rarest Dog Breeds in America

Dogs are the most popular pets in America – deservingly, they are the most loved and affectionate furry friends, and their popularity as family companions never wanes. We all know what are the most popular dog breeds – and which evergreen breeds have been stealing hearts for decades back, but how about those lesser-known breeds? Which in particular are the rarest among them? Even if touting great qualities, some of these super rare breeds are simply hard to come by, and they are seldom seen. Thanks to a survey conducted by the American Kennel Club ( AKC), we can now find out which dog breeds are as obscure as can be. Out of a list of 199 registered and accepted breeds, the AKC revealed the 10 rarest dog breeds in America. 10.  Pyrenean Shepherd9.  Cesky Terrier8.  Sussex Spaniel7.  Harrier6.  Azawakh5.  Belgian Laekenois4.  American Foxhound3.  Sloughi2.  Norwegian Lundehund1.  English FoxhoundDon’t be surprised if you have never heard of some of these unique breeds. They are rare for a reason! On the other side of the spectrum, looking at the most recent trends, the French Bulldog holds the number one spot as the most popular pet dog breed in America, with the Labrador and Golden Retrievers following close by. That’s a bit of a change, as the Golden Retriever long held the number one spot. Generally speaking, most people tend to go for more known and traditional dog breeds when looking for a purebred dog, but the world of canines is much more diverse, with plenty of unusual and amazing breeds to choose from.Ultimately, the popularity of a certain breed should not be connected with their suitability as pets. After all, many factors contribute to that – a great deal of pet parents, myself included, are proud to share their lives with a mixed breed pooch and the fact that they’re not a certain breed doesn’t make them any less perfect. Your four-legged bestie might be a more popular dog breed, a rare purebred, a hybrid designer dog breed, or a cute mutt – they’ll steal your heart either way!

What is the Best Dog Harness for Senior Dogs?

What is the Best Dog Harness for Senior Dogs?

Final Thoughts – The Best Harness for Senior Dogs Many veterinarians and experts on the health and care of senior dogs will recommend using a harness. However, not all harnesses are created to meet the needs of every life stage. When selecting a harness for an older dog, there are unique factors to consider. This includes the weight and bulkiness of the harness, how easy it is to put it on/take it off, and the padding inside the harness for their comfort. Pay careful attention to ensure the design or fit doesn’t limit or impact movement. There are many great harness options on the market, including those made for regular wear and specialized lift support harnesses with convenient shoulder straps. If possible, visit your local pet store with your senior dog to check out your options firsthand. This will help you better assess the size needed and whether the design suits your dog’s unique needs. Most importantly, remember that there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution. You may find that you are using two different harnesses with two senior dogs in your home. That’s okay! The goal is to find the option that supports all your dog’s needs and helps you give them the best possible quality of life. Join the PetGuide community. What Are the Requirements for Flying with a Dog?

What Are the Requirements for Flying with a Dog?

While traveling with your pet can be challenging, it doesn’t have to be. Even though some  airlines can be a bit finicky about their rules and regulations, you can fly with your pet in tow safely and comfortably, as long as you know their requirements and follow them to the letter.Having your choice of airlines to travel with your dog as your companion, broadens your options when it comes to travel destinations and can eliminate a lot of usual travel-related stress factors in the process. In fact, flying your pet together with you can be simple, straightforward, and hassle-free! As long as you stick to the rules, that is. So, without further ado, what are the requirements for flying with a dog? Are there any universal practices you should know or does it really depend from company to company? Here’s everything you should know before packing your bags. What Are the Requirements for Flying with a Dog?Of course, it goes without saying that you can’t just appear with your pet at the check-in gate and fly away! There are many important rules involved, mainly in order to keep your pet safe, to comply with specific airline regulations, the rules of other countries, and the comfort of other passengers as well. It is also important to remember that different airlines might have different rules. It is crucial that you contact your desired airline beforehand, checking about any special regulations that they require. Still, there are some universal criteria that any pet will have to meet in order to fly on a plane. One of the foremost requirements that will allow your pet to fly on a plane is a health certificate. This is a special document that can be issued by your veterinarian after a thorough physical examination. It guarantees that your doggo is healthy, has no diseases, and has all the required vaccinations that are up to date. And, of course, this certificate needs to be recent. They are valid for only about 30 days, so make sure to do it in time. Some airlines also require that your pet be microchipped. This is advisable for all pet owners regardless of travel or not. The  microchip allows for quick and simple identification in case your pet gets lost and also serves as a sort of doggo credential. Just make sure that all the information stored on the chip is up-to-date!

Pregnant Dog Saved from Shipping Container by U.S. Coast Guard

Pregnant Dog Saved from Shipping Container by U.S. Coast Guard

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston got a big surprise when they found a dog trapped inside a shipping container. While inspecting the containers, Lucas Loe, Bryan Wainscott, Jose Reyes, and Ryan McMahon heard scratching and barking coming from inside one of them. After bringing the container down to ground level—it had been roughly 25 feet up—they opened it to find an adorable dog desperate to get out.A Dog Rescued Against All OddsThe poor dog had been stuck in that container, which had junked vehicles and was set to be shipped overseas, for at least eight days without any food or water. How she got in there in the first place is a mystery, but they think she might’ve been in one of the cars that was put in the container. What makes this story even more incredible is the fact that there were thousands of shipping containers along with the one that the friendly dog was trapped in, so she’s very lucky that the inspectors heard her and rescued her in time. They named her Connie, and her story quickly went viral. She’s even referred to as Connie the Container Dog. A video posted on Facebook shows her rescue.According to a U.S. Coast Guard Heartland Facebook post, Connie was thrilled and grateful to be free, but she was also tired and hungry. She was taken to Pasadena Animal Shelter to be examined before being flown to Forever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR) in the Washington, D.C. metro area. She was diagnosed with heartworm and was found to be underweight.A New Discovery: Connie the Container Dog Is PregnantAfter her rescuers noticed that Connie’s mammary glands were swollen, they worried that she’d given birth to and lost her puppies while she was trapped in the container. But an ultrasound revealed that she is indeed pregnant.Once she’s healed and ready to be adopted, Connie will be looking for a forever home. And her puppies will also be looking for homes once they’re old enough. In the meantime, she’ll stay with a veterinarian who will keep a close eye on her and make sure that she and her puppies are doing well.To keep up with Connie’s journey, you can follow FCAR’s Facebook page. You can also watch this video to see Connie and her rescuers:

The best no-spill dog bowls for sloppy drinkers tested and reviewed

My precious pooch is an indoor dog. So, when she spills water when drinking, I have to clean it up. If I don’t, it’s only a matter of time before I get wet socks. I hate wet socks!

Sound familiar?

If you are tired of cleaning up water puddles, then a no-spill dog bowl is just what you are looking for.

A no-spill dog bowl can instantly turn your water-splashing dog into a dripless drinker.

But which no-spill bowl is best for your dog?

Well, we can answer that.

Our Top Picks

Ray Allen K8 Buddy Bowl Top Pick - Best All-Round No Spill Dog Bowl

Best Overall

Ray allen buddy bowl.

Golden Wolf Less Mess Top Pick Best No Spill Bowl For Flat Faced Dogs

Best For Flat Faces

Less-mess bowl.

We spent over 120 hours testing 17 different no-spill dog bowls. With the help of our dedicated dog testing team, we created the most detailed no-spill dog bowl review, ever .

The best no-spill dog bowl

I’ll be honest with you… We went into this review expecting to pick an outright winner.

However, as we soon learned, no single bowl worked best for all dogs. In fact, very few no-spills worked well for the messiest drinkers out there – flat-faced dogs like Champ, our bulldog tester.

The reason for this is that many no-spill bowls rely on a narrow opening, one that flat-faced dogs couldn’t squeeze their face through.

So to begin with, I cover the two best all-around dog bowls – one for most dogs and one for flat-faced dogs. After that, I list suitable options for those looking for something more specialized.

Flip it. Roll it. Shake it. This bowl won’t spill a drop.

Out of all the no-spill bowls we reviewed, none impressed us more than the K9 Buddy Bowl by Ray Allen. During regular use, on its side or even flipped upside down, the bowl doesn’t let any water escape.

Not. A. Single. Drop!

The ability to lock in water makes this water bowl suitable for use at home or on the road – perfect for motorhomes or working dogs who ride with you.

Best of all, the design keeps long ears dry! Your Bloodhound couldn’t dunk his droopy ears in this bowl if he tried!

We flipped, threw and rolled the Ray Allen Buddy Bowl, but it refused to leak. The simple design was darn effective at containing water. The only time we made it successfully spill was by incorrectly placing the lid on the bowl.

Speaking of the lid…

We came across many user reviews claiming that the bowl is hard to open – something you do when cleaning time rolls around.

This is true. But it’s only a temporary problem when the bowl is new. The first few times you open it up can be a struggle, but once broken in, removing the lid becomes effortless. It took about 12 lid removals to break the lid in.

Tucker, the Yellow Labrador Retriever, reviewing the Ray Allen Buddy Bowl

The all-plastic design allowed the bowl to slide around while our doggy testers used the bowl. However, this was only really a problem while they learned how to correctly use the bowl, bumping their snout on the edges in the process.

Once our pups mastered the correct technique, standing over the bowl instead of off to the side, the bowl hardly moved at all.

The initial moving wasn’t really a problem since the enclosed design prevented water from sloshing out of the bowl while it moved around.

If you are concerned about the bowl sliding, you could place the bowl against a wall or even use a non-slip mat.

The Ray Allen Buddy Bowl comes in three sizes:

  • Small: 32 oz
  • Medium: 44 oz
  • Large: 64 oz

If in doubt or you have multiple dogs, choose a larger size. None of our testers struggled when presented with the next size up.

Even Champ, our flat-faced tester, could drink from the wide opening. Admittedly, he had to smoosh his face right in and looked darn silly doing it…

American Bulldog flat-faced dog drinking out of no-spill dog bowl

While the bowl is still usable, it’s not exactly the right tool for the job.

If you have a flat-faced breed, then our next recommendation is much more appropriate…

Best No Spill Dog Bowl For Flat Faced Dogs

A no-spill dog bowl that even a flat faced dog, like a pug, can drink from.

If you have a flat-faced dog, you likely need a splash-proof bowl instead of a spill-proof one. All the spill-proof bowls we tested featured obstructions that made drinking more difficult for our flat-faced friends.

The Less-Mess Pet Bowl by Golden Wolf hits the sweet spot between preventing spills and splashes while still being easy-to-use for a flat-faced dog.

A plastic disk floats on top of the bowl. A small hole in the center of the disk lets a small amount of water through, limiting how much water your pooch can reach at any time. Instead of gulping, your dog needs to lap up the water. The result is that your dog will drink slower with less splashing and mess.

The non-slip rubber base prevents the bowl from sliding over the floor, but due to the open nature of the design, we didn’t have any tester bump the bowl while drinking.

If you don’t have a flat-faced dog, then I suggest skipping this recommendation.

You see, clever dogs with long snouts soon figure out how to remove the floating disk. While Champ, the Bulldog, was unable to grip the disc, Cooper, the Labrador, had it out in no time.

Once your dog removes the disk, he is once again free to make a mess. If your pup has a snout, check out our number 1 pick, the Ray Allen Buddy Bowl.

The same goes for puppies who put their feet in the bowl. If your dog does this, he will push the floating disc down, which results in water splashing out the bowl.

But if your dog doesn’t play games with his bowl or you have a flat-faced dog, the bowl works perfectly.

Champ, the American Bulldog, drinking out of the best no-spill dog bowl for flat-faced dogs

Champ used to drink from a stainless steel bowl. To say that he was messy is an understatement! He basically dunked his head in the water every time he drank, leaving a trail of water and drool as he walked away.

Once we swapped him over to the Less-Mess bowl, he became a proper gentleman. He drank with small, measured sips and didn’t splash any water out of the bowl at all. There were still a couple of drops that fell from his jowls, but it was nothing like the puddle he left behind when using his old bowl. And, besides, you get a few drops splashed from any bowl you use.

For best results, I recommend filling the bowl ¾ of the way full. It prevents splashing if your pooch accidentally bumps the floating disc.

The bowl only comes in a single size. However, thanks to the open top, both small Pugs and larger Bulldogs can drink from the bowl.

Honorable Mentions

While our top picks outperformed, the following no-spills bowls are situationally useful. If you have a small dog or one that loves to chew, then you may find these bowls better suited for your pooch.

Best No-Spill Dog Bowl For Small Dogs

Kurgo Splash Free Wander Bowl Best No Spill Dog Bowl For Small Dogs

Splash-Free Wander Bowl

An easily accessible bowl for pint sized pups.

If your mini pooch is too small to flip or push around his dog bowl, then our number one pick might be overkill for you. That’s why we decided to find a better solution for smaller dogs.

Introducing the Kugo Splash-Free Wander Bowl. The tilted opening and flexible sides allow even the smallest Chihuahua to access the water easily.

Made entirely of food-grade silicone, Kurgo designed this no-spill bowl to be travel-friendly. We easily folded the bowl in half and kept it in our glove compartment. While it is the most travel-friendly no-spill bowl, it is nowhere near as compact as the collapsible dog bowls we reviewed, which are much better suited for traveling.

Still, this no-spill bowl has a good reputation among the RV community, many of whom rely on it to stop their dogs from spilling water all over the floor.

Leo, our tiny Jack Russell mix, eating from a no-spill dog bowl

During testing, it held up well, and water didn’t slosh around. The bowl didn’t slide around on grass, carpet or decking, and Leo didn’t spill a drop.

The same couldn’t be said for our larger testers, however. Tucker thought the bowl was a toy and preferred to play with it rather than drink from it – even when he was thirsty.

Best no-spill dog bowl for chewers

Best no-spill dog bowl for chewers.

Stoneware pottery water bowl best non-spill ceramic dog bowl for chewers

Stoneware Pottery

A ceramic splash-free bowl that is made right here in the USA. Let’s see your dog chew this!

Is your dog a hardcore chewer? Then you are all too familiar with how quickly plastic and silicone dog bowls are destroyed – I’m thinking of you German Shepherd owners!

Unfortunately, the vast majority of no-spill dog bowls are plastic. And, the one stainless steel option is, well, not that great.

The only viable solution we came across during testing is this ceramic no-spill bowl hand-made right here in the USA.

Made from stoneware clay, the hard finish of the bowl discourages even the most determined chewer.

As you would expect from a ceramic dog bowl , these things are heavy. The smaller size weighs two pounds while the larger size comes in at four. Even so, an overly playful German Shepherd can likely carry it around with ease.

The inward curling edges effectively stopped water from sloshing over the edges – even when used by our messiest drinkers.

Pixie, the Pit Bull mix, testing ceramic no-spill dog bowl

We were also impressed with just how little the bowl moved around. We tested it on carpet, tiles, wooden floorboards and even grass – the darn thing wouldn’t budge no matter who drank from it.

Dotted around the lip are three drainage holes. These allow water to escape when washing, preventing the risk of mold and mildew that often comes with trapped water.

Speaking of the lip, we did note that it made the opening a little too narrow to accommodate a flat-faced dog.

If your dog is a chewer and you want a no-spill bowl, this is as good as it gets. Just be mindful that it does come at a price.

The no-spill dog bowls that didn’t make the cut

Every bowl can’t be a winner. We test many products, and it’s impossible for them all to come out on top. Here are the bowls that just didn’t quite make the cut.

I had really high hopes for the Slopper Stopper dripless water bowl . It has amazing reviews and holds a gallon of water. The Slopper Stopper also has a stand available (sold separately) that allows you to raise the bowl higher. Unfortunately, the design is over-engineered and needlessly complicated to use. But what is most off-putting is the price – this was the most expensive no-spill water bowl we tested. Considering cheaper products performed as well or better, we see no reason to drop the extra cash on this dog bowl.

The Indipets Stainless Steel Spill Proof Bowl is the only no-spill bowl made entirely of stainless steel. Constructed in two separate pieces, a stainless steel bowl and a removable lip, this bowl offered all the advantages that any other stainless steel bowl would – durable, won’t be chewed and easy-to-clean. The steel lip is rigid and pokey and our Labrador Retriever got his nose stuck under it because of the design. Also, after taking the non-slip rubber ring off for cleaning, it is basically impossible to reattach. Quality control seems to be poor – the lids of the bowls we reviewed fit with varying degrees of snugness with one quite difficult to place back on.

The Prestige Road Refresher was very similar to our top pick for flat-faced dogs – it also features a floating disc that forces your pooch to drink slowly. However, the lip that runs around the rim of the bowl made the bowl considerably more difficult to use for many dogs. We had long noses get stuck and flat faces not fit. And when this happened, water spilled everywhere.

The Petmate No Spill Bowl was the least versatile of all the no-spill bowls we tested. It’s considerably smaller than expected. The narrow opening measured just over two inches across. This might be fine for small to medium dogs, but larger dogs had incredible difficulty drinking from it. Our largest tester, Tucker, flipped the bowl in frustration. It’s also incredibly lightweight and easily slid when bumped. Product inconsistency once again came up as the lids did not stay on. If you just want an affordable bowl to cut back on splashing, then it might be worth checking out, but you definitely get what you pay for.

Finally, Ryan’s Own No Spill Water Bowl was very similar to the Petmate model I covered above. It had similar flaws but was considerably more expensive.

What is a no-spill dog bowl?

As the name suggests, a no-spill dog bowl is designed to do one thing:

Stop your dog from making a mess when he eats and drinks – keeping your floor clean and dry .

How does a no-spill dog bowl achieve that?

Well, it varies from brand to brand.

Some have a lid to prevent water from splashing over the edge of the bowl…

No-spill dog bowl with lid to stop water splashing out

Some have an opening so narrow that only your dog’s tongue can slide through…

No-spill dog bowl with lid to contain water

Others defy gravity and won’t leak even if flipped upside down…

Ray Allen No-Spill Buddy Bowl for dogs flipped upside down without leaking

All told, no-spill bowls come in dozens of different designs.

While each no-spill bowl may look different, they are all designed to do the same thing… save your floor from a puddle of water.

What are the different types of no-spill dog bowls?

During our research, we came across three variations of the no-spill bowl.

1. Spill-proof

Ray Allen K9 Buddy Bowl the best all-around no-spill dog bowl

A plastic bowl typically made from a three-part construction, this bowl will not leak a drop of water, even if flipped upside down.

2. Splash-proof

Kurgo Splash Free Wander Bowl best no-spill dog bowl for small dogs

This version is essentially a regular dog bowl with an awning running around the edge. This bowl prevents splashes from messy drinking and your dog nudging the bowl. However, it won’t stop a dog who is determined to make a mess.

3. Splash catchers

Dog mat to catch splashed water and spilled food

This design has a mat or container that the dog bowl sits on. It not only catches spilled water but dropped dog food as well.

Splash catchers can either come as a complete set, with dog bowls included, or sold separately.

How well do no-spill dog bowls work?

No-spill dog bowls have a somewhat mixed reception in the community. Some dog owners love them. Others are not so keen.

Based on our interviews with experts and dog owners, much of that seems to stem from unrealistic expectations or purchasing the wrong no-spill dog bowl for their dog.

Our review makes sure that you choose the best no-spill bowl for your dog. As for your expectations, let’s talk about that…

Yes, a good no-spill dog bowl greatly reduces spills, splashes and floods.

However, it won’t eliminate water drips completely.

You see, even the neatest dog has a splash of water on his face and jowls when he drinks.

Once your dog is finished drinking and walks away, water drips from his face, leaving a small trail of drops. It’s unavoidable.

This is especially noticeable with dogs that drool a lot.

Irish Setter with drool running down face after drinking water

It’s these few drips that upset dog owners who believe a no-spill dog bowl will eliminate 100% of all slobber.

Similarly, I came across some owners who believed a no-spill dog bowl would magically stop their dog from playing in their water bowl.

It might seem obvious, but…

No bowl is going to stop your dog from slobbering or playing games.

That’s just your dog being a dog. And, in my opinion, that’s part of their charm.

With that said, a no-spill bowl is still an incredibly useful product…

What a no-spill dog bowl can do is greatly reduce splashing and spills that happen during drinking – when your dog has his face dunked in the bowl.

Compared to a flood of water that comes from messy drinking, those few drips are not a problem at all.

It is worth mentioning that no-spill bowls work best with water. If you are looking for a dedicated food bowl, I suggest grabbing a slow-feed bowl instead.

Which dogs need a no-spill dog bowl?

Depending on the breed of dog, a no-spill dog bowl can be an essential piece of equipment.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most compelling arguments for using a no-spill dog bowl.

1. Is your dog a messy drinker?

German Shorthaired Pointer messily splashing water everywhere while drinking from water bowl

Let’s get the most obvious argument out of the way first.

Drinking without using your hands is difficult. And, your dog doesn’t have any.

Seriously, try kneeling over and drinking water out of a bowl without using your hands. It isn’t easy, is it?

With that said, some dogs are definitely messier than others.

If your dog nudges his bowl while he eats, has a sloppy drinking style or simply enjoys making a mess, then a no-spill bowl is a great way of preventing it.

2. Is your dog a gulper?

Labrador Retriever gulping as he drinks water from his water bowl

Assuming that your dog doesn’t choke first when he eats or drinks too quickly, he will swallow air, which can cause your dog to vomit. [ 1 ]

A quick vomit may make your dog feel better, but it can leave you with a stained carpet and a mess to clean up or worse… you have to watch your dog eat his puke.

Even if your dog doesn’t puke, he could get a nasty case of hiccups from gulping down his water – but at least these typically pass after a few minutes. [ 2 ]

Many no-spill bowls restrict access to your dog’s water, forcing him to drink slower.

3. Does your dog have long ears or a beard?

Basset Hounds drinking water from bowl while ears are hanging in the water getting wet

Do you have a droopy-eared dog, like a Basset Hound or Spaniel? Then, you are all too familiar with the ear dunking that happens every time he drinks from his water bowl.

Maybe you have a bearded dog, like a Schnauzer or Scottish Terrier. Well, that beard is going to get soaked when drink time rolls around.

If you are lucky, your dog will simply walk away from his water bowl and leave a dripping trail of water.

And if you are unlucky?

Well, this picture says it best…

Beagle shaking water drops off his ears after getting them wet while drinking from water bowl

Yep, your soggy pooch is going to shake and spray that water all over your yard, walls and clothes.

A no-spill water bowl can stop your pooch’s dangly bits from getting wet, preventing this disaster in the first place.

4. Your dog’s bowl is on carpet

Golden Retriever puppy spilling water on carpet rug

Carpet has a lot of good things going for it. I love how soft it feels underfoot…

But when it comes to cleaning, I’d take a tile floor any day.

That’s why it’s best to feed and water your dog on an easy-to-clean surface.

But if you live in an apartment, then you might not have a lot of choice in the matter. And, the carpet might be the most accessible place to feed your dog.

If you find yourself nodding in agreement, then a no-spill bowl will keep your carpet clean.

5. Does your dog dig in his water bowl?

Dog with his feet in his water bowl

Yes, this is actually a thing. And if you have never seen it before, it comes as quite a surprise.

Picture your doggy digging in his water bowl like there’s gold at the bottom, a stream of water spraying out behind him like a motorboat.

Then, when the bowl is empty, he simply walks away, acting like nothing happened – leaving you to clean up the mess.

Other times, your dog may just soak his feet in his water bowl. Not that this is much better because your dog is still going to track wet paws around the house.

Now, it is worth mentioning that there are numerous reasons why your dog digs in his water bowl… [ 3 ]

  • Your dog is overheating.
  • Your dog is bored.
  • Your dog prefers to drink moving water, like that of a stream.
  • Your dog sees his moving reflection in the bowl.

Or, maybe your dog just enjoys digging in the water bowl . If this is the reason, then a no-spill bowl will solve your problem.

However, if any of the other reasons listed above are responsible, you are best off addressing the cause rather than forcing your dog to deal with a no-spill bowl.

6. Do you have a puppy?

Border Collie puppy splashing water on floor with foot in water bowl

… Or maybe you have an adult dog who still thinks he’s a puppy.

I’m not sure what it is about water bowls, but just the sight of one can turn your preciously little puppy into a water-spraying jerk.

If your puppy isn’t splashing in the water, then he is probably wrestling with the bowl. And to make sure he makes as much mess as possible, he carries it around your home.

And when your puppy is all tuckered out, forget sleeping in his dog bed – the water bowl is much more comfortable.

Fortunately, most puppies outgrow this messy behavior. But until they do, a no-spill bowl is a simple and effective solution.

Did you find yourself shaking your head in agreement at any of the above situations?

Then, your doggy is a suitable candidate for a no-spill dog bowl.

Yellow Labrador loves his no-spill dog bowl

During our research, the feedback on no-spill dog bowls was overwhelmingly positive.

However, that doesn’t mean that this product is fool-proof…

Most no-spill dog bowls are made from plastic. Because of this, they have the same flaws as any other plastic dog bowl …

If your dog loves to gnaw, then I don’t have to tell you that a plastic no-spill bowl and sharp teeth are a poor mix.

Another issue came up where the flat face of a Bulldog prevented him from easily accessing the water from the bowl. No matter how hard Champ pushed his face into the bowl, he couldn’t reach the water.

Now, I must stress that these experiences are uncommon. In many cases, these problems arise because the incorrect no-spill bowl was chosen for that dog breed.

For example, choosing a stainless steel bowl will be more than enough to stop a determined chewer.

Similarly, suitable no-spill dog bowls are available that allow even dogs with flat faces to access water easily.

Fortunately, you won’t have to deal with these problems. After all, use this guide to find the perfect no-spill dog bowl for your dog. We tested 17 no-spill dog bowls with a variety of dogs.

Speaking of which…

How did we test the no-spill dog bowls?

At DogLab, we take reviews seriously. We never recommend products that we wouldn’t happily give to our own dogs.

That’s why our testing team thoroughly evaluates each product we recommend – with paws-on use.

By the end of our testing process, we spent 120+ hours researching, testing and reviewing the most popular (and even some unpopular) no-spill dog bowls on the market.

Which no-spill dog bowls did we test?

The different brands of no-spill dog bowls that we tested and reviewed

The first thing we did was to decide on which no-spill dog bowls we should test.

Plenty of dogs make a mess when they drink. Because of this, there are dozens of different no-spill dog bowls on the market, all designed to solve the problem of your splashing pooch.

After researching the different no-spill bowls on the market, analyzing user reviews and interviewing experts, we narrowed down our selection to 17 different bowls.

While this might seem like a lot, some brands manufactured a range of no-spill bowls in different sizes, and we had to test them all.

By the end of our tests, we put 8 different brands to the test.

  • Golden Wolf
  • Modern Artisans
  • Slopper Stopper
  • Ryan’s Own

With our list complete, it was now time to go shopping. We purchased each no-spill dog bowl featured in our review today from Amazon.com.

Yep, at DogLab, we buy every product at the same price you pay. We don’t receive discounts for reviewing products.

Once every no-spill dog bowl arrived, it was time to test them!

What criteria did we use?

Let’s face it, the main reason you buy a no-spill dog bowl is to stop your sloppy drinker from spilling water all over your floor.

So, we gathered a team of water gulpers to try their hardest to splash and spill water from the bowls we purchased.

Each bowl was tested for a week by each dog, to give them time to get used to the bowl and learn how to use it correctly.

From there, we graded each bowl on its ability to prevent the area around the bowl from turning into a flood zone.

We also tested each bowl for…

  • Ease of cleaning
  • Did the bowl slide around during drinking?

Who tested the no-spill dog bowls?

It’s now time to introduce you to who tested the no-spill dog bowls.

We assembled a team of five testers to interact with, observe and rate how well each no-spill bowl performed.

Where possible, we source testers from Fetch A Friend Rescue , a rescue organization that takes in dogs from local shelters who would otherwise be put down, giving them a second chance to find a forever home. If you live in Upstate New York and are looking for a four-legged family friend, check them out!

Let me introduce you to…

Pixie, the Pit Bull mix, no-spill dog bowl tester

Breed: Pit Bull mix

Despite being neglected by her previous owner, Pixie is an optimist and ready to find a new home with a family who will give plenty of belly rubs. She loves to play with other dogs, especially tug of war and is a total toy addict, often attempting to fit two or three toys in her mouth at once.

Good news: Pixie has been adopted!

Champ, the American Bulldog mix, no-spill dog bowl tester

Breed: American Bulldog mix

Champ had a very rough start to his life, spending it chained up in a yard. He now has aspirations of being a professional taste tester. If it’s on the floor, he puts it in his mouth. He’s not a barker but instead prefers to talk through cute, grunty noises.

Good news: Champ was also adopted!

Leo, the Jack Russell Terrier mix, no-spill dog bowl tester

Breed: Jack Russell mix

Hailing from the deep south, Leo is a southern gentleman. He doesn’t bark, is well-trained and, most importantly, brings the ball back to your feet when you throw it. After a fun day of playing, Leo loves nothing more than to snuggle and have his head rubbed.

Good news: Leo was adopted!

Tucker, the Yellow Labrador Retriever, no-spill bowl tester

Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever

Tucker is one of our regular testers and loves everything to do with the outdoors. Rain, hail or shine. And, snow… Especially snow. Tucker performed a few happy laps in the snow before we convinced him to test the no-spill dog bowls.

Chelsie, the human reviewer of the no-spill dog bowl guide

Breed: Human

Me – lover of dogs and walks in the snow. Thanks in part to my opposable thumbs, I played a major role in reviewing all the no-spill dog bowls. Who else was going to clean up after all those spills?

Phew, if you made it this far, then you know everything you need in order to choose the ideal no-spill dog bowl for your dog.

Snoop Dogg puts mind, money on bowl. Not that kind of bowl. A college football bowl game

Thirty years ago, Snoop Dogg was sipping on gin and juice, with his mind on his money and his money on his mind.

These days, the Long Beach-based rapper and business man is running a company that sells gin and juice products, with his mind apparently on college football.

Introducing the newly renamed “ Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice by Dre and Snoop ,” which will take place Dec. 28 in Tucson, Ariz.

“College football fans are exhausted by the constant talk around NIL , conference realignment , coach movement , transfer portal and super conferences ,” Snoop Dogg said in a video posted Monday on his social media accounts. “So it’s time we get back to the roots of college football, what it was focused on — the colleges, the players, the competition, the community, the fan experience and the pageantry.”

Held at Arizona Stadium, home of the Arizona Wildcats , the bowl started in 2015 and has been tied to the Mountain West and Mid-American conferences since 2020. Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop is a ready-to-drink, gin-based canned product from the new premium spirits company launched earlier this year by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre , a rapper, producer and business mogul.

Feb. 8, 2024

With a name inspired by “ Gin & Juice ,” the 1994 single by Snoop Dogg and produced by Dr. Dre , the company is the first alcohol brand to serve as a title sponsor for an NCAA bowl game.

“Snoop’s passions for supporting youth football, college football and music completely aligned with things we were already doing and joining forces meant that we could elevate the entire Bowl experience together,” Arizona Bowl executive director Kym Adair told The Times in an email Tuesday. “In fact, three players from his SYFL ( Snoop Youth Football League ) currently play at the University of Arizona, where we play our game.

“We also quickly recognized that we shared the desire to highlight the joy and pageantry that accompanies the celebration of college football through our bowl game and what it means to the players, the participating universities, our community, and the fans.”

The multi-year agreement with Snoop Dogg and his company comes as the previous three-year deal with Barstool Sports as the event’s title sponsor comes to an end.

“We had a fantastic run with Barstool Sports,” Adair said. “They were everything we had hoped they would be and more and will forever be a part of the fabric of our game.”

How many youth football players have six-figure deals? A 9-year-old in Snoop Dogg’s league does

Third-grader Ghalee Wadood Jr. landed a six-figure NIL deal after a stellar season in Snoop Dogg’s youth football league. His father says it will prepare him for life beyond the game.

June 30, 2023

That partnership was seen as controversial by some. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has made numerous comments considered to be misogynistic or racist. Portnoy has also been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women; he has denied all of those allegations.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted to withdraw its $40,000 funding for the Arizona Bowl in 2021. Adair said her company hasn’t spoken with the county about funding at this point.

Snoop Dogg isn’t exactly the most clean-cut guy either.

Much of his music contains offensive language. He has admitted to a past as a pimp and having gang ties . In 1996, he was acquitted of first- and second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of a gang member three years earlier.

But Snoop’s image has taken a softer turn over the years. He’s funny, friendly and extremely easy going. He’s known as Coach Snoop to the hundreds of inner-city kids who have participated in his nonprofit youth football league since 2005.

And he’s seemingly everywhere.

“Snoop is an American music icon, a successful businessman, a pop-culture phenomenon, the face of the Olympics on NBC this Summer, a brand ambassador for huge companies and someone that loves football so much that he started his own youth football league (SYFL) to serve young athletes in California,” Adair said. “He is ubiquitous.”

Adair added, “We have only heard positive reviews of our new partnership.”

A number of events will take place tied to the event, including a Snooper Bowl featuring youth teams from Arizona and California. Snoop Dogg also could make an appearance in the booth for the Arizona Bowl providing color commentary.

“Being a fan, coach, supporter of all levels of the game, I’ve sent many players through my SYFL to colleges and the NFL, so it’s only fitting that I step up and help get this thing right,” Snoop Dogg said in the video. “I’m ready to bring the juice back to college football.”

Snoop Dogg gets his own bowl game with Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice

Snoop Dogg is ready to "bring the juice" back to college football. Gin and juice that is.

The rap icon is getting into the bowl sponsorship game, and the Arizona Bowl will officially be known as the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop .

Launched in February, Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop is a nod to the famous song with Dr. Dre off Snoop's 1993 album " Doggystyle ." As the presenting sponsor, it marks the first time an NCAA-sanctioned bowl game will be presented by an alcohol product.

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.

"It's time that we get back to the roots of college football. When it was focused on the colleges, the players, the competition, the community, the fan experience and the pageantry," Snoop said in social media video. "It's only fitting that I step up and help get this thing right. I'm ready to bring the juice back to college football."

The game, previously known as the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl , pits a team from the Mountain West Conference and Mid-American Conference at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, home of the Arizona Wildcats. The deal with Snoop is a multi-year sponsorship, according to bowl organizers, and was brought together by the game’s consulting partners, Playfly Sports.

"We’re thrilled about our groundbreaking partnership with Snoop and Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop," Kym Adair, executive director of the Arizona Bowl, said in a statement. "This year, the Arizona Bowl is bringing sports, libations, and entertainment into a singular bowl game, and we are changing the definition of what a brand partnership is in the NCAA."

Snoop has long been part of football, including the launch of his Snoop Youth Football League in 2005. He was frequently seen at Southern California games during the program's dominance in the 2000s, and his son Cordell Broadus was a member of the UCLA football team before stepping away from the game.

In addition to the game, a "SNOOPER Bowl" will take place, which will bring "the top California and Arizona youth football teams to battle it out." The Arizona Bowl will take place Dec. 28 at 2:30 p.m. MT.

Sick and tired of cleaning up water messes every time your pup takes a drink? You are not alone. This problem is something that breeds of every size can have. Some dogs are simply messy drinkers who gulp water down quickly and sloppily. Fortunately, there are water dishes made specifically for messy drinkers. The best no-spill dog water bowls can make a big difference in controlling that wet mess.

At A Glance Best No Spill Dog Water Bottle By Category

Pick the right spill-proof dog water bowl.

Not all spill-proof dog water bowls work the same because not all dogs spill the same way. Some dogs are tippers, some are splashers, some like to mess around in the water, and others tend to flip their water dishes over. Some dogs want to play and splash water everywhere, while others cannot seem to take a drink without slurping and sloshing all over. There are many different bowls designed to help spilling, as well as those designed not to flip over. However, not every bowl will work for every kind of messy drinker. Keep this in mind as you learn about and select products.

Additionally, some dogs like to make a mess with both their food and water, and there are bowls designed for each.

Things to Consider In A No-Spill Dog Water Bowl

What kind of sloppy drinker do you have? Does your dog put her paw in, splash liquid out, or consistently flip the entire thing over? Do you have a large breed that seems to splash everywhere, no matter what you try? Or do you have a much smaller fur baby who makes a mess because she can’t reach the liquid? The first step to picking the best no-spill dog water dish for your pup is to identify the problem.

  • Quality and material are two significant considerations owners must make. Does your pup like plastic, metal, or ceramic dishes? When investing in something like a high-quality drinking vessel that won’t tip over and reduce spills, it is essential to make sure you always pick canine-safe materials that are made to be used with liquid. You want to avoid any products that are not safe or made from harmful materials like aluminum, copper, lead, or BPA plastics.
  • Size matters when considering watering dishes. Dogs that are larger in size drinking from too small bowls may not be able to get enough to drink and will most likely make a mess. Aim for bowls with a diameter of 10 to 12 inches for larger dogs. Medium-sized dogs should have drinking dishes between 6 and 20 inches in diameter. Smaller pups should have drinking bowls about 4 to 6 inches in diameter.

Ways To Discourage Messy Drinking

Dogs are messy drinkers because they do not have cheeks like ours that allow them to suck liquid in . Instead, canines must lap at the liquid with their tongues moving it into their mouths. This action causes splashing; some animals are more vigorous and messier than others.

One way to handle this is to provide the right drinking dish and a mat underneath to catch any mess. There is no way to make a dog drink less sloppily. Owners must work around that. Using non-spill and non-tip bowls, slow-feeding and drinking bowls, and keeping a mat under your pup’s eating and drinking area are all ways to reduce the wet mess.

Have You Considered A Water Fountain?

Some dogs may do better with a water fountain . Fountains offer fresh, moving liquid and keep pets constantly supplied with crisp, clean hydration. For some pets, fountains may be a way to prevent playing or spilling. However, for others, this may encourage the behavior. Some fountains are built to be interactive, which is also a great option. Owners may want to consider water bottles, fountains, and automatic dispensers. Dog water bottles are perfect for on-the-go, daily walks, traveling, and sometimes, to help control the mess. If you happen to take your pup swimming we have some recommendations for dog floaties , and pup-sized life jackets .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

An excellent read! Thanks for much for sharing the Russian metro system with us. We're heading to Moscow in April and exploring the metro stations were on our list and after reading your post, I'm even more excited to go visit them. Thanks again 🙂

Nick Schroeder, right.

Nick Schroeder, 42, of Portland, is communications manager and multidisciplinary programmer for Space, a nonprofit arts venue in Portland. He’s also an actor, director and ensemble member with Mad Horse Theatre Company in South Portland. A native of Old Orchard Beach, he’s worked as a journalist and editor at several local publications.

As much as I like bopping around the state by myself, I’ll spend my perfect Maine day with my partner, Mallory, and our nearly 3-year-old toddler. The kid’s in the stage of life where she asks why to just about everything, and that question makes for good conversation.

Getting dressed (finding pants, socks, etc. and negotiating their deployment) can take a while in my house, so we’ll put on WMPG to keep the energy loose. I’ll pour a good cup of coffee, Speckled Ax Early Riser preferred , in my clunky travel mug. Then we’ll get things cracking at that one real good climbing tree in the park for a little proprioceptive rinse. The branches are real low to the ground and I don’t have to worry about my kid taking any nasty falls.

Will Zu Bakery still have croissants by now, or is that too much morning meandering? The neighbors tend to swarm the little West End spot – how is it this good? – and it can quickly sell out. If that’s the case, we’ll drive south. Actually, scratch that – Mallory will drive this leg, and I’ll bike. Our destinations will be the same, Palace Diner (in Biddeford). I’ll have the omelet du jour and those great big potatoes, and maybe a bite of my kid’s pancake – the dad handbook clearly states that you must eat your children’s leftovers. We’ll all poke our heads inside Biddeford Vintage Market and see what new vendors they’ve got (my aunt Barb runs the place with some friends) before making a quick spin into Color.Sound.Oblivion to check their newly stocked records.

With family who live nearby, I’ll be able to ditch the bike and hop into the car, heading north. We’ll stop in Portland to grab a couple of arepas for the road from the outrageously good Colombian food restaurant Maïz, and head to South Paris. In this fantasy, the Celebration Barn has a perfectly timed matinee show, and true to form, it’s equally enchanting for kids and adults.

After that, we’ll drive to Rockland (here’s where the kid naps) and head to a beach (any beach) before I pop into Curator , one of few consignment shops that bothers to stock nice stuff for tall fellas. Then it’s over to Rock City Cafe for a refill and a poke around Hello Hello Books behind the cafe. Last time, I found a nice used paperback of a Judy Chicago biography. Will I get this lucky again?

A stack of books at Print: A Bookstore in Portland. Ben McCanna/Staff Photographer

Returning to Portland, we’ll have had our fill of driving and Raffi sing-alongs. It’s time for our A-list East End retail trifecta – Ferdinand  for handmade wonders, Starry Eyes  for snazzy kids’ stuff, and Print: A Bookstore (more books!).

For dinner, the ideal is Asmara , the great Eritrean gem, where we as a family can share big communal plates of colorful food using only our hands as utensils. After we put the kid to bed, I’ll text a friend, and if his kid’s asleep, too, we can sneak out for a little nightcap at the Continental and discuss the news.

How would you spend your perfect Maine day? Send your itinerary, in 500 words or less, with a little about yourself, to [email protected] .
