Australia’s third-biggest island (after Tasmania and Melville Island), Kangaroo Island is a natural paradise, brimming with native wildlife, remarkable rocks, and artisanal food and wine.
Kangaroo Island separated from the Australian mainland around 10, 000 years ago. It was known as Karta or ‘Isle of the Dead’ to mainland Aboriginal groups, likely because a creation being from the dreamtime, Ngurunderi, crossed to the island before travelling to the Milky Way. The spirits of the dead were believed to follow his track into the afterlife through the sky.
There is plenty of evidence, however, that the island was occupied by Aboriginal groups. Stone tools were found at several points around the island. It is likely that the first humans reached the island around 16, 000 years ago, before it split from the mainland, with the island populated until around 2,000 years ago.
The first European to visit Kangaroo Island was Matthew Flinders, who named it Kanguroo Island after the particular sub-species of western grey kangaroo endemic to the island. The French explorer Nicholas Baudin first circumnavigated and mapped the island, giving it the French names that are still in use today.
Kangaroo Island was first settled by Europeans in 1836. The biggest town, Kingscote, was the first settlement in South Australia , and was for a time floated as the capital of the new colony, before it was realised that the island did not have the resources to support a large population. Other towns include Penneshaw, on the eastern edge of the island, and American Creek, on the north coast between Penneshaw and Kingscote.
Today, the main industries on Kangaroo Island are tourism and agriculture. The island is one of the biggest tourist destinations in South Australia, attracting over 140, 000 visitors per year.
A major attraction is the Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park, orange-lichen covered granite boulders shaped by the sea, wind, and rain into a number of strange shapes. Flinders Chase National Park is also home to rare Australian animals, including tammar wallabies and the platypus. At Admirals Arch, a stalactite-covered rock bridge, look for sunbathing New Zealand fur seals.
Seal Bay Conservation Park on the island’s south coast is the only place in the world that you can walk among endangered Australian sea lions, either on a boardwalk, or by 45-minute guided tour.
Kangaroo Island is home to a wealth of other Australian wildlife species. Look for kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas as you walk around the island. Troops of black swans marshal around American River, while echnidas and goannas can be seen throughout the island. Take a sea cruise, and see whales, dolphins and seals. In Lathami Conservation Park and Baudin Conservation Park, spot rare birds, including the glossy black cockatoo, endangered and endemic only to Kangaroo Island.
Kangaroo Island is also renowned for its quality food and wine. The island has over 30 wine-growers and 12 wineries, as well as a spirits distillery and craft brewery. Restaurants serve up fresh seafood, and markets sell local cheese. Kangaroo Island is also particularly known for its honey as the home of the world’s only disease-free colony of Ligurian bees.

With an expert guide by your side, you'll have a good chance of spotting native animals in their natural habitats. Keep an eye out for koalas high in the trees, fur seals sunning themselves on the rocks, echidnas searching for ants and platypus which can often be spotted at the waterholes in the Rocky River region at Flinders Chase National Park.
Named for its rolling dunes that resemble the North African desert, Little Sahara is a must-visit for anyone who wants to admire sweeping views of the spectacular Vivonne Bay. But the fun doesn't stop at the top. To get back down to sea level, why not sandboard or toboggan your way down the slopes (the biggest of which is nearly 70 metres high). Adrenaline rush guaranteed.
Get active and connect with nature on the Wilderness Trail. From dense bushland and towering Mallee forests to rugged coastline and vast vistas of the Southern Ocean, walking is a great way to see the island's beauty and explore at your own pace. Keep watch for local bottled-nosed dolphins and seabirds soaring above your head along the coastal sections.
Explore Flinders Chase National Park and visit famous sites such as Weirs Cove, Harvey’s Return, Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks (and remarkable they are!). This unique, 500 million-year-old rock formation is perched 70 metres above the ocean and could easily be mistaken for a modern art sculpture.
Kangaroo Island is one of the best places in the country to see Australian sea lions. Take a stroll along the boardwalks of the stunning Seal Bay where these intriguing animals have lived in large colonies for thousands of years. You'll observe their behaviour with a ranger and learn all about how they surf, hunt, nurture their pups and defend their territory.
Kangaroo Island's beaches are regularly voted as some of the most beautiful in Australia. The best part? They're lower on the tourist radar so you'll have them (almost) all to yourself. Hop your way between the white sands of Emu Bay, the turquoise waters of Vivonne Bay and the giant rock pool of the secluded Stokes Bay.
How do I get to Kangaroo Island?
Kangaroo Island is located 14 kilometres (9 miles) off the South Australian coast. To get there, you'll need to take the ferry from Cape Jervis or fly from Adelaide.
You can fly to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and several other cities in Australia (subject to seasonal demand), or catch a ferry to Penneshaw from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The ferry takes around 45 minutes.
How do I get around on Kangaroo Island?
There's no public transport on Kangaroo Island, so you'll need your own set of wheels. You can bring your car on the ferry, hire a car on the island or join a guided group tour.
When is the best time to visit Kangaroo Island?
Kangaroo Island is beautiful all year, with each season offers a unique perspective of the island.
Summer is generally hot and dry which is ideal for checking out the many beaches, while winter is great for seeing fur seals, adorable kangaroo and wallaby joeys and southern right whales.
Spring and autumn are perfect for bushwalking, fishing and seeing the island's native flowers in bloom.
What is the internet access like on Kangaroo Island?
Telstra customers can get mobile data coverage in major tourist areas and along most of the island's sealed roads. There's limited signal available in more remote areas of the island, particularly when you're travelling off-road.
Customers with other network providers may have little or no coverage throughout the island, but most hotels and resorts offer wi-fi. Kangaroo Island ferries also offer free wi-fi.
Can I use my mobile phone on Kangaroo Island?
Telstra customers usually have the best coverage on Kangaroo Island, particularly in more populated areas. If you're with another network provider you may have less or no coverage at all, however, most hotels offer free wi-fi so you can stay connected.
What should I pack for Kangaroo Island?
Kangaroo Island is a casual place so you can leave your dressy clothes at home. Layered, breathable clothing is key, as while it can be chilly when you set off in the morning, it can warm up substantially throughout the day. You'll also need a pair of comfy walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat (even in winter). A raincoat or poncho is better than an umbrella as some areas can be very windy.
What do I wear on Kangaroo Island?
Most activities on Kangaroo Island involve the great outdoors, so there's no need to dress up. In the evening, smart casual is the typical dress code for the island's restaurants — think t-shirt and jeans. Evenings can be chilly, even during the summer months, so ensure you bring a couple of warm layers.
Has Kangaroo Island recovered from the 2020 bushfires?
The 2020 bushfires were the biggest in the island's history. The fires burnt almost half of the island and had a devastating impact on the people, homes, businesses, wildlife, nature and tourism.
As catastrophic as the fires were, Kangaroo Island and other bushfire-affected regions in South Australia are bouncing back. Nature is flourishing again and wildlife has returned to native habitats. Amazingly, some species that were thought to have been wiped out have been spotted, including the Kangaroo Island Little Pygmy Possum.
Tourism has suffered a great deal since the bushfires, but as the island continues to recover, it's more important than ever.

Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is definitely not part of Tasmania! However, with a similar ethos to Tassie yet very different wildlife and birds (including Koalas and Sea Lions), it is a wonderful complement to any Tasmanian Odyssey. With direct flights between Hobart and Adelaide, it is also an easy addition for a couple of days, and ideal for those who want to see a little more of South Australia without too much arduous travelling.
Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island, the size of Bali or Long Island. With over 300 miles of pristine rugged coastline and 3400 square miles of diverse wildlife-rich landscapes, red dirt roads, sheep farms and bush, like Tassie, this island incorporates much of Australia in miniature.
Although you can, of course, explore it independently, the only way to truly get under the skin of its wild beauty and ‘meet the locals’ is with the keen eyes and ears of your own local guide.
The diverse geology, native vegetation and low population make this island Eden a refuge to over 268 species of birds, many species of mammal and over 900 species of plants. Also like Tassie, many of these are subspecies unique to 'KI' - as the locals call their beloved island.
Within minutes of landing at tiny Kingscote Airport from Adelaide, your eagle-eyed guide from our wonderful family-run tour company will have you virtually nose to nose with Sooty Kangaroos lazing in the bush and gazing up at picture postcard-perfect koalas, dozing a few feet away in the eucalypts. After a KI-style picnic lunch on a private reserve, expertly prepared by your guide, a quiet walk through the bush will reveal KI's very own Tammar Wallabies, and a stroll down to the Seal Bay Conservation Park will bring you face to face with countless Australian Sea Lions splashing and diving in the surf, squabbling over territory and basking in the sun. As you explore the island in an expertly-manoeuvred 4WD you can expect to see a flock of Glossy Black Cockatoos swooping overhead, while glorious colourful Galahs will call to you from the trees outside your B&B or lodge.
With a Mediterranean climate, KI can be visited at any time of year. While many species of bird and mammal can be seen year-round, each new season brings its own wildlife and birding highlights.
We can take care of all your travel arrangements from Adelaide Airport, with daily flights. Your island accommodation will be chosen to suit your very own style; choose from a delightful family-run homesteads and cosy Provencal style B&Bs with home-cooked dinners served with local wines (from the island's very own 12 wineries of course); or jolly hotels, intimate boltholes and lodges from rustic to the last word in luxury.
For a completely tailor-made experience, your very own private guide awaits - perfect for a couple or family; if you prefer the company of others, join a small group tour with a handful of likeminded nature-lovers. No one knows Kangaroo Island better than the locals and we are proud to call them our friends!

4 days of family fun on Kangaroo Island
Fancy a swim with wild dolphins or a walk among hundreds of sea lions? Boy, have you come to the right place.
By Dilvin Yasa
Picture a place where the only passing traffic is a mob of bounding kangaroos and where the only other lifeforce capable of stealing your patch of sand is an Australian sea lion. Now, add to these unique wildlife experiences, some of the country’s most spectacular scenery and heart-stopping attractions – both natural and manmade – and you have the showstopper family holiday destination of Kangaroo Island .
Get ready for four days of family fun on Kangaroo Island.
Day 1: Adelaide - Cape Jervis - Penneshaw
Deep Creek Conservation Park, Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia © Jack Brookes
Several tour operators run multi-day tours around the island with some dedicated to wildlife, others to food and wine, or a bit of both. Check out Kangaroo Island Odysseys and SeaLink Kangaroo Island .
- Drive time: 1.5 hours.
Is it about the journey or the destination? In this case, it’s both, as you head out of Adelaide (there are daily flights here from most Australian capital cities) and snake your way down through the Fleurieu Peninsula (notorious for serving up some of South Australia’s most spectacular coastal and culinary experiences) towards the picturesque port town of Cape Jervis – the gateway to Kangaroo Island.
Got a little time up your sleeve? Take a McLaren Vale detour on your way and head to Maxwell Wines , where an epic hedge maze awaits discovery, or Woodstock Wines – home to a playground and wildlife sanctuary with supervised feeding times for its western grey kangaroos and wallabies.
Once in Cape Jervis, take the luxury Kangaroo Island Connect or the SeaLink ferry (which accommodates cars and passengers) across to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Here, towering sand dunes, soaring cliffs and bone-white beaches compete for your attention. In Penneshaw, pop into Millie Mae’s Pantry , a rustic garden café located just around the corner from Penneshaw Cruise Terminal. Home to some of the island’s best coffee, this is the place to soak up some sun and order a pulled beef bowl while the kids enjoy the on-site play corner and kids’ menu.
Stay: Give yourself over to a life of luxury for the duration of your stay on the island by checking into the architecturally designed Dune House, one of two properties under the Hamilton & Dune umbrella. Overlooking a white-sand beach along the Emu Bay coast, a 45-minute drive from Penneshaw, three bedrooms sleeping five are kitted out with all the details, from beach bags and toys to a fully-stocked fridge and minibar. Other great Kangaroo Island options for families include Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas , A Dune Escape and Doyles on the Bay .
Day 2: Explore Emu Bay
Emu Bay Lavender Farm, Kangaroo Island, South Australia © South Australian Tourism Commission
Did you know?
Some of Australia's greatest makers and growers reside here. Pop into Island Beehive for a tour of their Ligurian beehives and Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery to see how its famous oil is made.
Start your day the best way possible: by swimming with pods of wild dolphins in pristine coastal waters. Kangaroo Island Marine Adventures operates in the Emu Bay area; owner Andrew Neighbour takes groups out in his rigid, inflatable boat to tour the coastline and wait for the finned lovelies to swim in from their early morning outing. Everyone’s catered for; there are snorkels and noodles for the kids and tea and biscuits for the adults.
As the afternoon heat settles in, there’s no place better to find shelter and comfort than Emu Bay Lavender Farm ; it’s also the place that serves the world’s best lavender scones and homemade lavender ice-cream. Pop in for lunch before picking up a couple of bottles of wine from Bay of Shoals winery, then head down to the beach for a late afternoon splash.
Day 3: Vivonne bay and Raptor Domain
Seal Bay Conservation Park, Kangaroo Island, South Australia © South Australian Tourism Commission
How do you outdo yesterday’s dolphin swim? Try taking a walk along a beach where hundreds of Australian sea lions roam free and frolic. Visitors to Seal Bay Conservation Park have the option of taking a self-guided stroll along the wheelchair-accessible 900-metre (0.5-mile) round trip boardwalk or booking a guided tour down on the beach. It’s best to leave Dune House early; Seal Bay is a 40-minute drive south.
A short drive away sits a local institution, the Vivonne Bay General Store , which is a one-stop-shop for families requiring anything from sunscreen to lunch (it’s famous for its whiting burgers). Take the sandy track right by it down to Vivonne Bay Beach , which has been voted one of Australia’s best beaches, for a quick dip before coming back up for a bite.
Kangaroo Island is home to more than 250 species of birds and some of the most impressive can be found at Raptor Domain (a 15-minute drive from Vivonne Bay Beach), a rehabilitation for sick, injured and orphaned birds of prey, where a range of wildlife presentations take place each day. Top of the list is the Birds of Prey Display, a one-hour show where you can meet some of the park’s famous residents (most are rescue birds) from Jedda the wedge-tailed eagle to Clancy the laughing kookaburra.
Those needing a little late-afternoon pick-me-up should look no further than Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action at Vivonne Bay, where quad bikes are at the ready to explore some spectacular landscapes.
If there’s still energy to spare, make the one-hour drive to Kangaroo Head and enjoy dinner at an outdoor table at the award-winning Sunset Food & Wine . Cue sunset, hopping kangaroos and an inventive menu making the most of local produce. Perfect.
After that it’s a 45-minute drive back to the comforts of Dune House back at Emu Bay.
Life-changing childhood experiences in Australia
Day 4: East island touring
Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, Kangaroo Island, South Australia © Julie Fletcher
Rise with the sun and drive the 40 minutes from Emu Bay to Stokes Bay , widely acknowledged as the island’s most family-friendly beach thanks to its unique natural pool. Once you’ve had a swim and taken the kids for a walk through the bay’s maze-like rocky passageways, you’re headed southbound to Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park , home to more than 150 species of wildlife – most of them orphaned and rehabilitated. Once at the park, kids and kidults alike will enjoy feeding the kangaroos and wallabies, and cuddling up to a koala.
Lunch is a 40-minute drive away, but worth it for the platters of super-fresh seafood that await. The Oyster Farm Shop in American River also offers land-based oyster tours for foodies interested in learning more about the juicy morsels just devoured.
There’s little for kids to consume at Kangaroo Island Spirits , but add quirky grounds to explore and famous affogato (yes, this is one for teens), and parents will have enough time to purchase some of the label’s award-winning gin in happy silence before continuing the drive to the main town of Kingscote for a walk around the promenade and its stores.
As the sun dips its head on your final night on the island, it’s time to grab a table at Bella Cafe & Pizza Bar . This long-running Kingscote restaurant has a menu that will please even the fussiest of eaters, thus providing you with the perfect, relaxed evening.
It’s a 20-minute drive from Kingscote back to Emu Bay for one last night at Dune House, and on the island itself.
