NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

I took these photos near Ranfurly in Central Otago, New Zealand. Anyone can use them please spread far and wide. :-) https://t.co/NUWpLiqY2S — Dr Andrew Dickson reform/ACC (@AndrewDickson13) May 10, 2024

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

Russo and Smith: Wild’s Swedes eager to show off homeland, but trip has new meaning for a team ‘desperate for points’

STOCKHOLM — When Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson flies home to Sweden for the summer, he always has a hard time adjusting to the jet lag.

It doesn’t matter how many times he has gone back and forth, it’s always easier coming back to the States. So Gustavsson can feel for his teammates and what they’re going through right now on this Global Series trip to Stockholm, where they will play the Senators and Maple Leafs on Saturday and Sunday.

“Usually you sleep when you fly at night, land at 7 a.m.,” Gustavsson said. “If you can’t sleep on the plane, then you’re screwed. It always takes me three days.”

The Wild left for Stockholm on Monday night at 10. There were 120 people on the flight, from players and staff in the regular travel party to upper management on the business side to owner Craig Leipold, VIPs, special corporate sponsors and members of the NHL ’s off-ice official crew. Five staffers were selected by the league from each of the Wild and Maple Leafs’ crews to keep stats and work the penalty boxes. There is no puck tracking at Avicii Arena for the four games featuring Minnesota, Toronto, Ottawa and Detroit , so stats will be kept manually.

The team has a game plan for helping with players’ sleep.

The staff created an extensive cheat sheet for each player and coach detailing how to best make the transition. The team doesn’t have a sleep doctor, but strength and conditioning coach Matt Harder used his experience and data to put together sleep kits and tips. Starting with the team’s charter flight, players were given sleep supplements like magnesium along with tart cherry juice and Dream Water. They also had the option of sleep masks and earplugs and were encouraged to avoid screen time.

The group has an off day Tuesday after the eight-hour flight. It’s best to avoid caffeine, players were told, and it was also that they quickly get 10-30 minutes of sunlight, along with light exercise (like a walk or light bike ride, yoga).

The Wild are holding a stretch and workout at the hotel almost immediately after arriving.

On the cheat sheet, there are also suggestions for how to adjust when returning to Minnesota, like taking a short, cold shower and getting some light exercise.

When the Lightning arrived in Stockholm for their Global Series trip in November 2019, players remembered their instincts being to try to take a nap or sleep right away. But if you go to bed, you can destroy your sleep schedule for the rest of the trip. So the Wild are encouraging players and staff to stay awake until normal bedtime in an effort to get used to the time zone.

That’s why in 2019 a few of the veteran Tampa Bay players, like Pat Maroon , got players together at a local Irish bar and restaurant to watch NFL football games. It was a Sunday, after all. A walk around downtown helped their energy.

the trip is off meaning

The time they spent together that week off the ice was invaluable, with many players saying it was a major jumpstart for what turned into a Stanley Cup season. Maroon, now with the Wild, told former Tampa Bay teammates in September before he left for Minnesota that he planned to show Wild players similar spots.

“The most important thing is hanging away from the rink,” Maroon said. “It builds chemistry. Young guys feel comfortable, and you play better on the ice, tougher. Whatever it is. Having a beer with a guy. Or guys who speak all different languages, you start to have a conversation with them. You need that.”

In Sweden, the Wild will have practices Wednesday and Friday, a team dinner Wednesday, two fan/corporate meet and greets and a full day off Thursday, for which the Swedes have taken control with all sorts of tips. Jonas Brodin is known inside the Wild’s locker room as the “King of Stockholm” because he spends a good amount of time there in the offseason, even though he lives three hours away in Karlstad.

He has suggested different restaurants and a stroll through Old Town, which is across the bridge from the Wild and Maple Leafs’ hotel.

Remember though, the Wild have lost nine of 11, so as Marc-Andre Fleury said Monday, a day after he gave up a career-high eight goals in an “embarrassing” loss to Dallas, the Wild must use this week wisely.

Coach Dean Evason echoed that sentiment.

“We’re all looking forward to it,” Evason said. “It’s fun, it’s supposed to be a good experience. But we’re there to get four points. That’s our goal. We’ll have some fun. We’ll take in a different country and culture and all that good stuff. But when the puck drops, we’re pretty desperate for points right now.”

Tour guides

What are the Wild’s Swedish players most looking forward to showing off?

Marcus Johansson : “It’s the food.”

Johansson, like Joel Eriksson Ek and Brodin, lives in Karlstad over the summer, having moved there when he was 15. But any trip to Stockholm, whether it’s for a weekend or a tournament, includes enjoying some of the country’s delicacies. “The food is unbelievable,” he said. “So many good spots, I don’t even know where I’ll go myself.”

Johansson suggested L’Avventura as a destination for upscale Italian, or Riche for traditional Swedish meatballs. “I don’t think you can go wrong,” he said.

Johansson, who played in Gothenburg while with the Capitals and Stockholm with the Sabres , has a bunch of family coming into town, from his parents to his brother and his kids. “It’s fun and a privilege to play in front of all your friends,” he said.

Eriksson Ek: What Eriksson Ek is most looking forward to is his family and friends, including his grandparents, being there to see him in person. His folks try to come to the States once a year to watch him, but being at home is different. He’s also planning to explore for some Swedish candy.

“Hopefully some Christmas bakeries are there,” he said.

Brodin: Swedish “fika,” which is a traditional coffee and cake break.

Brodin suggests the cinnamon buns (and dinner) at Brasserie Astoria.

“There’s a lot of fun stuff to do,” said Brodin. “I’ve had lots of fun times over there.”

Gustavsson: Gustavsson lives about eight hours north of Stockholm in Skelleftea but said he’d make trips into the big city every three years or so. He’s got a bunch of family coming in, from grandparents to cousins — his aunt lives in Stockholm. The team has an off day on Thursday, and players have opted to do their own thing rather than have a team outing.

“We’re going to a few different places,” Gustavsson said. “Old Town, a castle. We have a few secrets.”

Swedish Wild factoids

Sixteen Swedish players have suited up for the Wild in the regular season: Brodin, Eriksson Ek, Kim Johnsson, Johansson, Gustavsson, Victor Rask, Christian Folin, Daniel Tjarnqvist, Gustav Olofsson, Rickard Wallin, John Klingberg , Mattias Weinhandl, Oskar Sundqvist , Pontus Aberg, Gustav Nyquist and Johan Larsson.

Here are some of the superlatives:

Leading Swedish scorer in team history: Eriksson Ek and Brodin 220 points, Kim Johnsson 87

Most goals: Eriksson Ek 100, Brodin 48

Most assists: Brodin 172, Eriksson Ek 120

Most games: Brodin 756, Eriksson Ek 436, Johnsson 289

Fresh starts for Addison, Greenway

Calen Addison said he “had no idea” Wednesday’s trade was coming. It was bittersweet for him. The young defenseman had grown close to teammates, spending the whole summer in Minnesota training this year. He hoped to prove to the Wild he was a long-term fit. While Evason said they saw improvement in Addison, the team felt it knew what it had in him and thought the heavier and experienced Zach Bogosian was a better fit.

Addison immediately was thrust onto the Sharks top pair and power play, logging nearly 20 minutes in his first game against the Oilers and more than 21 in his second game against the Golden Knights . He was a combined minus-5 but appreciates the opportunity.

“I love it,” he said. “It makes you feel wanted, makes you feel good about yourself. Makes you feel confident.”

The Wild got to see another familiar face Friday in Buffalo, facing Jordan Greenway , who was drafted and developed in Minnesota before getting dealt at the trade deadline last year.

the trip is off meaning

“Trades can be bittersweet, and you can look at them in different ways,” Greenway said. “You can look at them positive or negative. I chose to look in the positive light, even though it was tough leaving a group I’m very close with, I knew there were a lot of positives. I’ve taken it as a new beginning.”

Sabres coach Don Granato, who coached Greenway at the U.S. National Team Development Program, said Greenway dealt with nagging injuries last year, but now that he’s healthy, he has been a key piece for them. Greenway is averaging a career-high 17:04 of ice time and is a plus-1. He was on the ice late in Friday’s 3-2 win over the Wild, trusted to help close out a game in a six-on-five situation.

“He’s earned a lot of respect around here,” Granato said.

Greenway kept his house in the Twin Cities area and — as a member of the Olympic Hills golf course — still plays his share of golf with Wild players like Matt Boldy .

“I definitely take some money from those guys,” he joked.

What’s a hush trip—and can it get you in trouble with your boss.

Hush-cations or hush trips are defined as traveling without telling your boss or putting in a PTO ... [+] request, and working remotely from your vacation.

Many travelers post photos and reels from their vacations, showing off the scenery from their beach getaways or their retreats into the mountains, giving tours of their hotel suites and hovering their iPhones over plates of local cuisine. But there may be a growing segment of travelers who are keeping quiet about their travels, at least in real time—and it has nothing to do with being humble or worrying about being burglarized while away from home. Rather, they don’t want their bosses to know they’re away because they never submitted a PTO request, a move that’s known as a “hush-cation” or a “hush trip.”

The idea? If you can work from anywhere, why not log your hours from a vacation destination and take Zoom calls with a real-life beach in the background, yet be covert enough to keep your laptop’s camera turned off so you don’t blow your cover?

A large portion of the workforce has gone remote : Nearly 13% of people working from home, and 28% working a hybrid model and new reports shows that return-to-office mandates could drive employees to quit. With summer vacations on the horizon, there’s a chance some of your remote colleagues (especially if they’re Gen Z) are secretly working from vacation locales. But could a hush-cation or a hush trip get you in trouble with your boss?

While some surveys have surfaced about hush cations, it remains to be seen as to whether it’s something remote workers just fascinate about or if it’s something they actually do, much like the quiet quitting trend.

We talked with experts from human resources, business leadership, and a therapy background about hush trips—whether these types of getaways have merit, what problems they could reveal about a workplace, and if they could be fireable offenses should your boss find out. Here’s what experts have to say about hush-cations.

‘Ghost Of Tsushima’ Is Already Flooded With Negative Reviews On Steam [Updated]

Apple ios 17 5 major iphone software release should you upgrade, samsung leaks confirm galaxy z fold 6 upgrades, what’s a hush-cation or a hush trip.

AC Hotel Clearwater Beach has a hush cation package for remote workers.

According to ResumeBuilder.com, a hush trip is where remote employees work from a vacation destination without telling their employers.

Last summer, the site surveyd 918 GenZers remote and hybrid workers and 44% revealed that they have taken a hush trip. About 65% used a virtual background to bamboozle their employers. The majority were able to get away with their trip without their bosses finding out and without getting in any hot water, despite the fact that one third of the hush trippers were just logging two hours a day.

Hotels are catching on, and some have even come up with clever marketing, like the “Hush Trip Haven” program at AC Hotel Clearwater Beach in Florida . The package comes with amenities and perks like a dedicated co-working space, a refreshment concierge, a special door hanger that says “Working ‘From Home’” and a webcam cover for privacy during virtual meetings.

Are Hush Trips a Symptom of Burnout?

Forty-four percent of Gen Z remote workers have admitted to taking a hush-cation, according to ... [+] ResumeBuilder.com.

Shelley Paxton , a business speaker and author of “Soulbattical” is a believer that time off is a prerequisite for creative, inspired, and energized work. It’s not a payoff for hard work, which is problematic given that it’s rarely taken in full and often shamed in a culture that celebrates busyness as a badge of honor, she says.

“As humans we need to slow down in order to speed up, so I fully support more conversations around remote work that also supports rejuvenation,” Paxton says. “The more of us choosing pause over push, the more healthy our workforce and productivity will be.”

However, Paxton says she’s also an advocate for transparent conversations about what’s needed to support a worker’s wellbeing or an entire organization’s healthy employee engagement.

“The ‘hush cation’ trend feels like it might be a reaction to not feeling supported in taking time off,” she says. “In my opinion, that means we’re moving in the wrong direction as the burnout, disengagement, and mental health crises continue to rise.”

Is Taking a Hush-Cation a Fireable Offense?

Some career experts say hush trips hint at trust issues in the workplace.

If you're in a situation that you feel compelled to not to tell your manager about your vacation, that's something to think about, says Daniel Space, an HR consultant and an HR content creator from DanFromHr.com .

“The purpose of a vacation is to destress and disconnect from your job, I can't imagine the stress of pretending to work while on vacation,” Space says. “Is the reward just to save vacation days?"

Hush cations run the risk of breaking trust or signaling to your manager that you can't take time off because you can't manage your workload, Space says.

Hush cations reveal a bigger workplace concerns about transparency, trust, and the overall culture within the organization, says Natalie Rosado, LMHC, founder and owner, Tampa Counseling Place .

Taking a hush trip could be especially problematic in industries with strict regulatory requirements, high security needs, or those that involve collaborative or shift-based work, she says.

Some specific sectors where such practices might particularly lead to complications or even disciplinary actions include: healthcare, finance and banking, government and public sector, education, cybersecurity, and legal services.

Still, some employers don’t have a problem with their remote employees getting their work done while they globe trot.

Josh Loewen, co-founder of the digital marketing agency The Status Bureau , found out one of his employees was on vacation after the fact.

“They thought they'd get in trouble, but it was the exact opposite,” he says. “I was proud of them for enjoying life and getting everything done at the same time. We've only got one life to live, so we may as well try to be happy. It's only when someone cannot deliver their work that things will get dicey.”

Boss pays off company challenge by taking entire team to Disneyland

HONOLULU ( KHNL /Gray News) - A company challenge ended up paying off with a trip to Disneyland.

The social media team behind Hawaiian Host Group , a Hawaii-based agricultural, manufacturing and consumer goods company, was tasked with finding ways to get more Instagram followers, their boss challenged them with a little fun incentive.

And when they succeeded, he followed through.

“We had a team meeting and one of the team members came in with a Disney sweater and I was like, ‘You know what, if we get 10,000 followers by May 1, I’ll take you guys to Disneyland. And that’s how it started,” Hawaiian Host Group’s Director of Corporate Brand Strategy Stijn Spaas said.

The team created a dance reel announcing to the public the incentive their boss gave them.

And that post ended up getting tons of reaction with the group easily surpassing the needed 10,000 followers by day two of the challenge.

So, they upped the ante.

They convinced Spaas to agree that if they hit the 100,000 followers mark, he would not only take the team to Disneyland, but he would also dress up as a Disney princess.

“I was surprised and didn’t really think through that second challenge, but you know, we ended up being super happy with the 350,000 followers we received,” Spaas said.

Since the challenge, the team has surpassed the 350,000 mark and are continuing to gain followers.

When it was time to cash in on the challenge, the team let the public vote on which princess they wanted to see their boss dress up as.

The Hawaiian Host Group social media team hosted a dress reveal in Anaheim and Spaas followed through dressing up as Rapunzel.

Fellow team members cheered him on as he let down the locks of his golden blonde wig from a balcony at the venue.

“The dress reveal was fun for everyone. It was something I committed to and I kept my word,” Spaas said.

Spaas praised the creativity of his team and said they plan to do more social media challenges.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Donald Trump and Melania Trump celebrated their son, Barron Trump, at his high school graduation in West Palm Beach, Fla., Friday.

The former US president and first lady arrived together to the Oxbridge Academy ceremony with what appeared to be bodyguards by their sides.

Donald, 77, was dressed in a white dress shirt, blue tie and navy blue suit. He appeared in good spirits as he was photographed smiling all throughout the occasion.

Melania, 54, for her part, wore a black blazer over a white dress and accessorized the look with a straw sun hat. The normally stoic former model also appeared happy and having a good time.

The proud parents were snapped cheering and clapping while Barron, 18, received his diploma.

The 6-foot-7 teen walked across the stage wearing a navy blue cap and gown, and bright red sash.

At one point during the ceremony, Donald stood up and leaned over the banister of the stands to excitedly wave in the direction of the graduates, seemingly trying to get Barron’s attention.

Melania appeared amused by the gesture, laughing as she placed her hand on her husband’s side.

Donald and Melania were surrounded at the time by other parents and relatives, who attended the gathering dressed in their best spring garbs.

Most of them smiled and clapped along when the 45th US president engaged in the silly moment.

Donald was able to make it to the milestone event because his historic trial in NYC was on a brief break.

The Republican candidate for US president faces 34 counts of fraud for the hush money that was allegedly paid to ex-porn star Stormy Daniels  prior to the 2016 election.

Justice Juan Merchan allowed the court to adjourn Thursday after Donald’s former lawyer Michael Cohen was cross-examined. Those proceedings are scheduled to resume on Monday.

The trial began on April 15, and the real estate mogul made it clear at the time that he did not want his legal battle to conflict with Barron’s graduation.

“I was looking forward to that graduation with his mother and father there, and it looks like the judge does not allow me to escape this scam,” Donald told reporters last month in the Manhattan Supreme Court.

Judge Merchan previously said in response to the request, “It really depends on if we are on time and where we are in the trial.” However, he evidently succumbed to the idea.

Barron is the only child Donald and Melania, who have been married since 2005, share and he is the former’s youngest.

The former “Apprentice” host also has four other adult children from previous marriages: Donald Trump Jr., 46, Ivanka Trump, 42, Eric Trump, 40, and Tiffany Trump, 30.

Three places to holiday by train from Melbourne

A train platform at Flinders Street station showing patrons and a sign on March 14, 2017.

If you're planning a weekend getaway near Melbourne soon, why not leave the car at home?

For starters, you can enjoy a more relaxed journey without having to be behind the wheel — and with fuel prices the way they are, you might end up saving money, too.

Whether you're looking for a day trip, or a night or two away, we spoke to train enthusiast Marcus Wong to find out three of the best train holidays near Melbourne.

Art and history in Castlemaine and the Goldfields

Castlemaine was once a bustling gold-rush town. These days, it's known for its vibrant art scene and cafe culture.

Located in Victoria's Goldfields region, Castlemaine's rich history can be seen in the old buildings in town which date back to the mid-19th century.

A popular spot for Melburnians looking for a tree change, Castlemaine is sometimes referred to in the big smoke as "north Northcote".

Getting there

Castlemaine is about 90 minutes by train from Melbourne. You can jump on the V/Line service to Bendigo, which runs regularly from Southern Cross Station.

Off-peak fares are available on weekends and when departing Melbourne before 4:00pm or after 6:00pm on weekdays.

A one-way off-peak trip to Castlemaine costs $17.64 for adults and $8.82 for travellers with a concession. If you're a parent of young children, keep in mind children under five travel free on V/Line trains .

Gallery attendees ascend the steps toward the entrance of the Castlemaine Art Museum in 2017.

Getting around

The train station is close to many of Castlemaine's attractions. It's about a 10 minute walk to the Castlemaine Art Museum and cafes and restaurants on Barker Street.

If you're in the mood for walking, there are guided tours available on Saturday afternoons .

Mount Alexander Shire runs a bus service in Castlemaine  and there are taxis available too.

Where to stay

There are plenty of short-stay accommodation options in Castlemaine and surrounds, including bed and breakfasts, hotels, and self-contained apartments.

Penguins, seals and surf at Phillip Island

Phillip Island is a well-known holiday spot for Melburnians, but many wouldn't know it's accessible by train.

You'll need to jump on a train to Frankston, and then switch to the Stony Point line. Once you arrive at Stony Point, you can catch the ferry to the island.

"Once you get to Stony Point, the pier is right there. That's where the ferry departs from," Mr Wong says.

At sunset on the island, you can camp out to see the famous penguin parade , which draws tourists from all over the world.

If you keep your eyes out, you might also spot migratory birds , seals and even whales swimming nearby.

A group of Little Penguins

This is the longest trip of the three and it's too far for a single-day trip.

The trip to Stony Point will take about two hours from Southern Cross Station.

From there, you can catch the ferry, which takes another 30 minutes.  Be sure to check the ferry timetable , because there are only four services running each day

The ferry costs $13.50 each way for adults , but there are cheaper fares available for concession card holders and children. The train trip will set you back about $4.60 each way, and $2.30 for a concession card holder.

There is a bus service on the island and you can also book taxis.

Aerial view of a packed Penguin Parade at Phillip Island.

There are plenty of accommodation options near the ferry terminal in Cowes, the island's main town.

The penguin parade is on the other side of the island, which is not serviced by bus or train. If you're keen to see the penguins, and you don't have a car, you'll need to book a taxi or arrange other transport from Cowes .

Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula

Geelong is Victoria's second-largest city, and it's very accessible from Melbourne via train.

"If you get off at Geelong station itself, you can walk over to the waterfront," Mr Wong says.

"It's not a surf beach or anything, but it's a nice place to go for a walk and have lunch on a sunny day."

During the warmer months, Geelong's Eastern Beach is a great spot for a swim. There's a large park with barbecues and a playground to keep children entertained.

Geelong's waterfront, harbour and city shown from the ocean on a blue sky day.

The trip from Southern Cross station to Geelong station on the V/Line takes just over an hour.

Again, if you're travelling on weekends or depart Melbourne before 4:00pm and after 6:00pm on a weekday, you can use an off-peak fare. The fare will cost $9.66 for an adult, or $4.83 for a concession fare. Travelling during peak periods is more expensive.

There are hotels and other accommodation options close to Geelong station.

The Bellarine Peninsula is home to several popular beach towns, including Torquay and Barwon Heads, which have plenty of holiday accommodation options and are accessible from Geelong or Marshall Station via bus.
