What Cruise Lines Are Best for Singles?

Deciding on the ideal cruise line for a singles adventure can be a challenging task, given the plethora of options out there. However, different cruise lines cater to various age groups, interests, and budgets, which makes it easier to narrow down your choices. Here’s a breakdown that can help you make an informed decision:

Birds eye view of cruise ship amenities

For Singles Over 20

For younger singles who want a vibrant atmosphere without breaking the bank, Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line are excellent options. These lines offer short, affordable cruises with a youthful crowd and a party ambiance. Royal Caribbean also offers great deals for young adults, with its range of activities and entertainment options that keep the energy high.

For Singles Over 30

Singles in their 30s looking for a balance between party vibes and a relaxed atmosphere should consider Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line , or the adults-only Virgin Voyages . Virgin Voyages offers a non-traditional experience tailored to singles, with communal dining options and activities designed for mingling.

For Singles Over 40

If you’re single in your 40s and searching for a more refined experience, Celebrity Cruises could be the line for you. Their Edge-class ships exude a sophisticated atmosphere, complete with jazz clubs and gourmet dining. For those interested in games of chance, most mainstream lines have well-equipped casinos, offering another avenue for social interaction.

For Singles Over 50

Mature singles like those over 50 may find lines like Oceania, Azamara, and Holland America more to their taste. These lines offer port-intensive itineraries that appeal to travelers interested in culture and sightseeing rather than partying. They also attract a balanced mix of singles and couples, increasing the odds of meeting like-minded individuals.

For Singles Over 60

Single retirees with more freedom and perhaps a larger budget can look into luxury lines like Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea . These lines go the extra mile to cater to singles, offering reduced supplement charges and specialized meet and greets.

Specialty Cruises

Finally, if you have a specific interest, like LGBTQ+ cruises, wine-tasting cruises, or ancestry-seeking cruises, there are tailored options available that make meeting people even easier. Lines like AmaWaterways and Viking River Cruises are excellent for those interested in European river cruises, often offering reduced single supplements.

Safety and Well-Being: What Royal Caribbean Offers for Singles

Woman holding her hat in front of a docked ship

Heading out on a solo journey is exhilarating, but let’s be real—worries about safety can sometimes put a damper on the fun. The good news? Royal Caribbean has got your back so you can concentrate on living your best cruise life. Here’s the lowdown:

  • From the moment you board the ship, you’ll notice vigilant security staff , well-placed cameras , and key-card access to passenger areas, ensuring that only authorized individuals can enter. Even the cabin doors are designed with advanced locking systems. Additionally, the cruise line offers safety briefings geared specifically for solo travelers, so you’ll know exactly what to do in case of an emergency.
  • One of the advantages of choosing Royal Caribbean is the state-of-the-art medical facilities available onboard. Staffed with professional medical personnel, these clinics are equipped to handle a variety of health issues , ensuring peace of mind while you’re miles away from the nearest hospital. Moreover, the ship offers wellness amenities like fitness centers and spa facilities. From yoga classes to rejuvenating massages , you can partake in activities that not only entertain but also contribute to your well-being.

What to Pack for Different Itineraries

Person packing their luggage with clothes

Your packing list will vary significantly depending on the itinerary you choose. For a Caribbean cruise, think swimwear, sunblock, and casual, airy clothes for the daytime, along with semi-formal wear for the evenings.

On Alaskan itineraries , layering is key—bring thermal clothing, water-resistant outerwear , and hiking boots . European voyages call for a blend of casual and upscale clothing to match the continent’s diverse range of activities and cultural norms. Don’t forget any specialty gear like snorkeling equipment or hiking poles, though rentals are often available onboard.

Special Considerations for Solo Travelers

Woman posing for a photo in front of rock mountains

1. Room Choice : Solo travelers often have to pay a “single supplement” fee for occupying a double room. However, Royal Caribbean offers studio cabins designed for solo travelers, helping you avoid this extra cost.

2. Dining Arrangements : Royal Caribbean offers “My Time Dining,” where you can choose when and where you’d like to eat. This flexibility is especially beneficial for solo travelers who may want to join new friends or enjoy a meal alone.

3. Safety : Always inform someone, whether it’s a new friend on the ship or a crew member if you’re going on an independent shore excursion. The ship’s personnel should always be aware if you’re leaving the ship alone.

4. Socializing : Royal Caribbean provides numerous opportunities for mingling, from poolside games to themed parties. Take advantage of these to meet new people.

5. Wellness : The ship’s spa and fitness facilities are excellent venues for some alone time. Take advantage of wellness seminars or treat yourself to a spa day.

6. Stay Connected : Wi-Fi packages are available if you need to stay in touch with family or work. However, going digital-free can also be liberating, and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

By packing wisely and keeping these special considerations in mind, you can ensure that your solo cruise on Royal Caribbean will be a rewarding experience.

Does Royal Caribbean charge per person or room?

Royal Caribbean typically charges per person, not per room. The pricing is usually based on double occupancy, meaning the cost assumes two people will be sharing the cabin ranging from as low as $50 to $1000 per person, per night.

Does a single person have to pay double for a cruise?

A single traveler usually faces a “single supplement” fee, which means they might pay close to double the cost of one person in a double-occupancy cabin. However, some promotions and deals can reduce this extra cost.

Yes, Royal Caribbean offers solo cabins on select ships. These cabins are designed for single travelers and are priced without a single supplement fee, making them a cost-effective option.

Does Royal Caribbean have solo cruising?

Royal Caribbean is known for being accommodating to solo travelers. They offer a range of activities and facilities designed for individuals cruising on their own, along with solo cabins on some ships.

Are there any cruises for just singles?

While Royal Caribbean doesn’t offer cruises exclusively for singles, they do provide a variety of activities and social events geared towards single travelers. Other cruise lines may offer specialized single cruises, but Royal Caribbean is highly inclusive for those adventuring solo.

About FunkyCruise

The 5 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Thinking of taking a cruise as a solo traveler? Here's the bad news: With many lines, you could end up paying twice as much as someone traveling with a companion.

Most cruise ship cabins are designed for two, and the cruise rates you see advertised for these cabins are per person, based on double occupancy . That means the rates are only available to customers who will be sharing the cabin with a second paying passenger.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

If you want to occupy one of these cabins alone, you'll pay a premium that, in cruise world lingo, is known as the "single supplement." Often, that premium is 100%. In other words, even if you don't have a second person in your cabin, you'll be paying an extra fare as if you did.

Still, all is not lost if you're a singleton wanting to experience life at sea. Spurred by increasing demand, a growing number of cruise lines are adding cabins designed specifically for solo travelers (with pricing that, by definition, is based on single occupancy). Some lines routinely offer lower single supplement charges than others, or they reduce or waive single supplements during promotions.

Of course, it's not just a low price that makes for a good solo cruise. Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines do a better job with this than others.

Looking at all these criteria — price, cabin options and a welcoming environment — I've identified five lines going the extra mile for cruisers traveling alone. Here are my top picks for the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Credit Norwegian for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, the big-ship line debuted an entire zone of small "studio" cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. It was such a hit that other lines began to follow.

Just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge. It has a bar and television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

royal caribbean cruises for singles

Norwegian has since added similar solo cabin areas with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships, including its two newest vessels, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima . Both ships have a 73-cabin solo complex that spreads across two decks.

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the futuristic "Jetsons"-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. On Norwegian Bliss, the solo cabins have a virtual porthole that offers a live view of the outside world via an LED screen.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance, and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has taken a page from Norwegian's playbook in recent years by adding solo cabins to both new and older ship classes . The line's Quantum-class vessels, which began debuting in 2014, offer up to 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, which measure from 101 to 119 square feet.

Unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is really just a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It sounds corny, but it works.)

Other Royal Caribbean ships with solo cabins include some of the line's giant Oasis-class vessels, including Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Several of Royal Caribbean's older Voyager-class and Radiance-class vessels also have solo cabins. But some of these ships have just two or three.

While the solo cabins on Royal Caribbean ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels, which is a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak. There's also quite a bar scene on Royal Caribbean ships, with rows of bar seats in many bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean ships are particularly known for their wide range of onboard activities, from big-production shows to rock-climbing walls and surfing pools, that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Silversea Cruises

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers. But the luxury line is known for catering to them with single supplements of just 10% to 25% on select sailings. Occasionally, during short-term promotions, the line even will waive the single supplement entirely.

Silversea also hosts welcome receptions for solo travelers at the start of every voyage to kick off the mingling process.

royal caribbean cruises for singles

Operating relatively small, intimate vessels that carry just a few hundred passengers, Silversea is known for drawing a social crowd that likes to mix and mingle, particularly at dinnertime — a boon for people like me who don't like to eat alone.

Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

Related: 6 reasons you'll want to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation.

Virgin Voyages

Of course, there's always the rebellious startup line Virgin Voyages , backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which draws fun-loving folks (but not just millennials ). It's shaping up to be a leader in the solo cruise market, judging from my experience when I sailed on its first ship, Scarlet Lady .

The vessel boasts 46 cabins specifically designed for lone travelers — as do its newer sisters, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . That's a big number for a ship with just 1,330 cabins overall. We haven't yet sailed in one of their solo rooms, but based on what we saw when we toured Scarlet Lady, they might just become the coolest digs-for-one around.

royal caribbean cruises for singles

The solo accommodations on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady include 40 windowless, 105-square-foot Solo Insider rooms on each vessel that are sleek and stylish with full-size beds, large flat-screen televisions, curvy vanities and high-design bathrooms. Six similar-looking Solo Sea View cabins on each vessel measure about 130 square feet and offer windows.

Note that the solo cabins with windows are at the front of the ships, facing forward. While that's a spectacular location for sightseeing, seasoned cruisers know that cabins in this location can be bumpy in rough seas. I love a little movement when I cruise (how else do you know you're at sea?), but if you don't, consider yourself warned.

Meanwhile, for solos, you'll find that Virgin's hopping bar scene — and adult-focused atmosphere — is perfect for solos looking to meet up with other single travelers. With a ban on children under 18, you won't find families with kids on this line. It's all about solo travelers, couples and friend groups looking to have a good time and engage with their shipmates on board.

Solo travelers looking for an upscale river cruise can often find a deal from Tauck, a high-end tour company with a European cruise division. It markets more than half a dozen river vessels.

Tauck often eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive category of cabins (Category 1) and reduces single supplements for other cabin categories (with savings up to $1,000 in select categories).

royal caribbean cruises for singles

On board, Tauck directors and cruise directors take special care of solo travelers, and communal tables at mealtime make it easy to meet other travelers.

Cruisers traveling alone can seek out others at the bar (no worries about the bar tab — drinks are included) or escape to a quiet sun deck spot with a book when they're tired of socializing. Daily shore excursions and tours are included, so you'll always have a group ready to explore with you on land.

River cruising in general is ideal for solo travelers, and other river lines also waive or significantly lower single supplement charges. Avalon Waterways waives its single supplement charge for some cabins on every cruise departure in Europe, and AmaWaterways charges a single supplement of just 50% for solo travelers booking non-suite cabins. It also has four ships in Europe that each have two dedicated solo cabins that carry no single supplement.

Bottom line

As someone who often cruises alone when writing about ships, I've found that smaller ships often are better for mixing and mingling than bigger ships .

On small ships, you'll see the same people again and again — on tours, in lounges, around the pool and so forth; this increases the odds you'll strike up a conversation and soon become fast friends. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you might go days without seeing the same person twice.

The lines that operate small ships are also more prone to offering discounts for solo travelers, which results in a higher percentage of individual cruisers onboard. That said, for the most part, the lines operating bigger ships are offering the most dedicated solo cabins. They also offer more onboard activities, from Broadway shows to rock-climbing walls, that you don't need companions to enjoy.

Not that you should worry too much about making friends at sea. Cruisers, in general, are social people. In fact, many passengers cruise specifically to meet others. I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting alone in a corner of a cruise ship lounge, minding my own business, when another passenger (or two or five) stopped by and struck up a conversation.

Whether you choose one of our top cruise lines for solo travelers or another line that suits your fancy, you're bound to have a good time with as much or as little alone time as you desire.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Greece, Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman .

Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes more than 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, the Scarlet Lady boasts a collection of unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to nearly 2,150 square feet for the RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. All accommodations feature mood lighting, minibars, free Wi-Fi and adjustable Seabeds, which allow travelers to transform their beds into couches when they want to entertain.

The Scarlet Lady sails to destinations in the Caribbean, like the Bahamas , from Miami .

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Use the app to book dinner reservations as far out from your sailing as you can, or 45 days out for most sailors. If you wait until closer to time or until you're on board, you will likely find that the most popular restaurants and dining times are all booked up. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Inside, the spa, the piano bar, the comedy club and the performance event venue, which features musicals, concerts and more, round out some of Carnival Radiance's most popular offerings. Dining options (14 eateries in total, including a Chef's Table experience) abound on this ship as well: Cruisers can enjoy casual fare at Big Chicken or Guy's Burger Joint, or sit down for a more upscale meal at Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi or the Steakhouse.

Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Cruisers can choose from seven dining venues, including specialty restaurants like Jacques (with menus crafted by chef Jacques Pépin) and the Asian-inspired eatery Red Ginger, which recent passengers highly recommend.

Similar to its sister ship,  Riviera , cabins range from 174-square-foot Inside staterooms to 2,000-square-foot Suites. Higher category Veranda cabins and Suites come with perks like balconies, access to a Concierge Lounge, in-room iPads and more. All staterooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, full-size bathtubs, and minibars stocked with soda and bottled water.

The ship features six stateroom categories: Inside, Ocean View, Verandah, Signature Suite, Pinnacle Suite and Neptune Suite. All accommodations are outfitted with Sealy-Premium Euro-Top mattresses, flat-screen TVs and plenty of storage space.

Like other Vista-class ships, Oosterdam   is equipped with a large pool and a sizable spa and fitness area, along with BBC Earth Experiences and sports courts. While there are kids and teens clubs for younger passengers, most of the activities and entertainment on the ship are geared toward adults.

When it's time to dine, guests can enjoy varied dishes in the main dining room, Italian fare at Canaletto or other options ranging from casual to fine dining.

Oosterdam departs from ports in  Fort Lauderdale , Buenos Aires , Rome , Athens and more. Itineraries include destinations in Europe, South America and Antarctica.

Nieuw Statendam

One of Holland America Line's newest cruise ships, Nieuw Statendam, launched in December 2018. This 2,666-passenger ship is the second in the line's contemporary Pinnacle Class collection. Like its sister ship, Koningsdam , this vessel places an emphasis on elegant, eye-catching design.

Along with its great aesthetics, Nieuw Statendam features a mix of engaging daytime and nighttime activities, as well as facilities designed to keep guests rested and relaxed. Passengers can unwind at the spa or pools, work up a sweat at the fitness center or pickleball court or participate in enriching activities like cooking demonstrations and wine-blending classes. At night, cruisers have several entertainment options, including the B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Rock Room or the World Stage for theatrical performances.

For dining, expect a mix of options, including a traditional dining room, casual spots and specialty restaurants that feature cuisines from Asia, France and – of course – Holland. Cabin categories are just as diverse: Accommodations range from Inside and Ocean View staterooms to Verandah staterooms to spacious suites with balconies and living areas.

Holland America now features an exclusive amenities program, Club Orange. Members can receive benefits such as a complimentary stateroom upgrade, a dedicated concierge hotline and skip-the-line priority access.

Grand Princess

First launched in 1998, the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess underwent a renovation in March 2019 that added new top-deck dining venues like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill and Coffee & Cones. The Princess Theater was also refreshed to provide a more immersive audio experience. Other onboard amenities include the adults-only Sanctuary, duty-free boutiques and educational programs through the Discovery of SEA program.

The ship houses numerous dining venues, including one main dining room, two specialty venues and a variety of casual eateries serving classics like burgers and pizza. Come nightfall, passengers can enjoy cocktails at their pick of lounges.

The recently refurbished accommodations are outfitted with amenities like flat-screen TVs and minifridges. Though only 76% of exterior cabins offer private balconies – a lower percentage than other ships in the fleet – guests describe cabins as comfortable and spacious. Plus, thanks to a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio (the ship features 1,150 crew members), past cruisers describe the onboard service as attentive and friendly. What's more, each guest aboard Grand Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Grand Princess sails to destinations worldwide, including Alaska, Hawaii , Australia, the California coast and the South Pacific.

Enchanted Princess

The 3,660-passenger, 1,346-crew member Enchanted Princess made its debut in November 2021. Part of the cruise line's MedallionClass, the ship features new technology and each cruiser is given an OceanMedallion wearable device. Cruisers can expect things like keyless cabin entry, contactless boarding, speedy Wi-Fi access (for a fee), food and drink delivery to anywhere on the ship and more.

With one main dining room, several casual eateries and four specialty dining venues – ranging from Italian to steak – guests will have no problem finding suitable spots to eat. As for entertainment, the Enchanted Princess offers musical productions, movie screenings under the stars, comedians, singers, magic acts, a casino, bars and more. Daytime activities might include playing a game of basketball or volleyball at the sports courts, relaxing in two deep tank pools and several hot tubs, or indulging in spa treatments at the Lotus Spa. The ship also has kids club offerings for youths ages 3 to 17.

When it comes to cabins, all Enchanted Princess staterooms are outfitted with flat-panel televisions, desks and minifridges. The lowest (and most affordable) cabin class, Interior, ranges from 158 to 162 square feet, while the roomiest option, Sky Suite, sprawls across 1,873 square feet of space. Several stateroom options also include balconies.

The Enchanted Princess is expected to sail around Mexico, the Caribbean, northern Europe and Canada and New England on its upcoming voyages.

Norwegian Prima

Norwegian Prima first set sail in October 2022 and can hold 3,099 guests and 1,506 crew members. The latest ship in the fleet includes many of the cruiser-favorite amenities and activities that are standard across Norwegian , plus a few more exciting additions.

Accommodations include Studios (perfect for solo travelers), and Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Club Balcony Suite and Suite staterooms. The Haven aboard the Norwegian Prima has been redesigned, with more spacious suites, upscale decor and The Haven's private sun deck. Outside their rooms, travelers will find plenty of dining options, including pub fare at The Local Bar & Grill, classic fare at the main dining room Hudson's, fine dining at The Commodore Room, international cuisine at Indulge Food Hall, casual eats at the Surfside Café & Grill and 24-hour room service, in addition to several specialty dining venues.

As far as activities go, cruisers can enjoy mini-golf, a racecar track, the water park and waterslides, plus games like darts, shuffleboard and pickleball. Those looking to relax can snag a lounge chair by the pool or book a treatment at the spa. Other options for fun include a casino, numerous bars and lounges, and a theater to enjoy musicals, concerts and The Price Is Right Live.

This Norwegian ship offers itineraries through the Mediterranean, northern Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean in the coming years.

An Alaska tourist spot will vote whether to ban cruise ships on Saturdays to give locals a break

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Each year, a crush of tourists arrives in Alaska’s capital city on cruise ships to see wonders like the fast-diminishing Mendenhall Glacier . Now, long-simmering tensions over Juneau’s tourism boom are coming to a head over a new voter initiative aimed at giving residents a respite from the influx.

A measure that would ban cruise ships with 250 or more passengers from docking in Juneau on Saturdays qualified for the Oct. 1 municipal ballot, setting the stage for a debate about how much tourism is too much in a city that is experiencing first-hand the impacts of climate change. The measure would also ban ships on July 4, a day when locals flock to a downtown parade.

The “ship-free Saturdays” initiative that qualified this week will go to voters unless the local Assembly enacts a similar measure by Aug. 15, which is seen as unlikely.

Juneau, accessible only by water or air, is home to the Mendenhall Glacier, a major draw for the cruise passengers who arrive on multi-story ships towering over parts of the modest downtown skyline. Many residents of this city of about 32,000 have concerns about increased traffic, congested trails and the frequent buzz of sight-seeing helicopters transporting visitors to the Mendenhall and other glaciers.

Image

Deborah Craig, who has lived in Juneau for decades, supports ship-free Saturdays. Craig, who lives across the channel from where the ships dock, often hears their early-morning fog horns and broadcast announcements made to passengers that are audible across the water.

The current “overwhelming” number of visitors diminishes what residents love so much about Juneau, she said.

“It’s about preserving the lifestyle that keeps us in Juneau, which is about clean air, clean water, pristine environment and easy access to trails, easy access to water sports and nature,” she said of the initiative.

“There’s this perception that some people are not welcoming of tourists, and that’s not the case at all,” Craig said. “It’s about volume. It’s about too much — too many in a short period of time overwhelming a small community.”

The current cruise season runs from early April to late October.

Opponents of the initiative say limiting dockings will hurt local businesses that rely heavily on tourism and could invite lawsuits. A voter-approved limit on cruise passenger numbers in Bar Harbor, Maine, another community with a significant tourism economy, was challenged in federal court.

Laura McDonnell, a business leader who owns Caribou Crossings, a gift shop in Juneau’s downtown tourist core, said she makes 98% of her annual revenue during the summer season.

Tourism is about all the “local businesses that rely on cruise passengers and our place in the community,” said McDonnell, who is involved in Protect Juneau’s Future, which opposes the initiative.

Some schools recently closed due to factors including declining enrollment, while the regional economy faces challenges, she said.

“I think that as a community, we really need to look at what’s at stake for our economy,” she said. “We are not in a position to be shrinking our economy.”

The cruise industry accounted for $375 million in direct spending in Juneau in 2023, most of that attributable to spending by passengers, according to a report prepared for the city by McKinley Research Group LLC.

After a two-year pandemic lull, cruise passenger numbers rose sharply in Juneau, hitting a record of more than 1.6 million in 2023. Under this year’s schedule, Sept. 21 will be the first day since early May with no large ships in town.

The tourism debate is polarizing, and the city has been trying to find a middle ground, said Alexandra Pierce, Juneau’s visitor industry director. But she noted there also needs to be a regional solution.

If the Juneau initiative passes, it will impact other, smaller communities in southeast Alaska because the ships, generally on trips originating in Seattle or Vancouver, Canada, will have to go somewhere if they can’t dock in Juneau on Saturdays, she said.

Some residents in Sitka, south of Juneau, are in the early stages of trying to limit cruise visitation to that small, island community, which is near a volcano.

Juneau and major cruise lines, including Carnival Corp., Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Group, agreed to a limit of five large ships a day, which took effect this year. They more recently signed a pact , set to take effect in 2026, seeking a daily limit of 16,000 cruise passengers Sundays through Fridays and 12,000 on Saturdays.

Pierce said the overall goal is to keep total cruise passenger visitation around 1.6 million, and to even out daily numbers of visitors that can spike to about 18,000 on the busiest days. Peak days in the past have felt “a bit suffocating,” she said. Juneau traditionally has been the most popular cruise port in the state.

A number of projects around Juneau are expected to help make existing cruise numbers feel less impactful. Those include plans for a gondola at the city-owned ski area and increased visitor capacity at the Mendenhall Glacier recreation area, she said.

Renée Limoge Reeve, vice president of government and community relations for the trade group Cruise Lines International Association Alaska, said the agreements signed with the city were the first of their kind in Alaska.

The best strategy is “ongoing, direct dialogue with local communities” and working together in a way that also provides a predictable source of income for local businesses, she said.

Protect Juneau’s Future, led by local business leaders, said the success of the ballot measure would mean a loss of sales tax revenue and millions of dollars in direct spending by cruise passengers. The group was confident voters would reject the measure, its steering committee said in a statement.

Karla Hart, a sponsor of the initiative and frequent critic of the cruise industry, said the threat of litigation has kept communities from taking steps to limit cruise numbers in the past. She was heartened by legal wins this year in the ongoing fight over the measure passed in Bar Harbor, a popular destination near Maine’s Acadia National Park.

She believes the Juneau initiative will pass.

“Every single person who is going to vote has a lived experience and knowledge of how the cruise industry impacts their lives,” she said.

This story corrects a quote from Pierce about peak days.

Children Traveling: How-tos For Single-parent Vacation Cruises

Traveling alone with your kid made easy, things to do as a single parent..

By  Sherri Eisenberg | Published on November 3, 2022

If you're a single parent looking to plan an affordable vacation for your family, you may have a few non-negotiables, like childcare services, activities that excite young kids and teenagers alike and, of course, opportunities to kick back and relax yourself. Single-parent vacation cruises are an ideal getaway that delivers all that and more. After all, on a cruise, you only have to unpack once, the itinerary is left up to the cruise line, and the onboard amenities will keep you and your family busy on sea days. Here's everything you need to know before you book your first of many single-parent vacation cruises.

Mother and Son on The Blaster

Affordable Family Vacations For Single Parents

As a parent traveling alone with their child or children, a more all-inclusive type of getaway such as a cruise is typically the best option for an affordable family vacation  for single parent’s looking for travel deals . When browsing family-friendly cruises, you want to pick a ship that has onboard amenities your kids will enjoy while you soak up a little quiet time. For traveling with teens and tweens , for example, look for bustling arcades, around-the-clock onboard pizzerias, soft-serve spots, mini-golf courses and movie nights on the pool deck.

Fun ideals for taking a vacation with your toddler , on the other hand, a sprinkler park, a shallow pool area, and buffets that serve kid favorites like grilled cheese, mac and cheese, fries and chicken fingers will tick all your boxes.

If you've ever traveled alone with a young child, you know the importance of keeping little ones in their routine, no matter where they are in the world. And when it comes to babies and toddlers, nap time is nap time, regardless of the time zone. Planning a cruise vacation  alone with your child helps you keep those routines, as you'll have a steady home base and can tailor your days to your preference.

Best Places To Cruise As A Single Parent

chichen itza mexico kukulkan pyramid

It can be a little tricky to have a child traveling with one parent internationally or domestically, but you'll likely find that cruising alone with your child is just plain easier than traveling by car or plane.

Booking a cruise, and then exploring independently in some ports, is an adventure in itself. But when booking a cruise as a single parent, be sure to look for shore excursions you'll both enjoy.

Sailing to the Caribbean  or Mexican Riviera  is a great choice for beach babies — and beach parents — who are happy to spend their time dancing along the edge of the surf, sipping fruity drinks under a palm tree, and stretching out in the powdery white sand. Whether your child is young enough to giggle loudly as you hop over waves or old enough to be at the helm of a jet ski, there are so many fun things to do as a single parent on a Caribbean cruise vacation. You can also lean into adventure with hikes to waterfalls , days spent exploring Mayan ruins , boat rides to prime snorkeling spots and even dune buggy tours of a storied city.

How To Keep Your Family Happy On A Cruise Vacation

Children who are picky eaters love the food on cruise ships  as they can experience the world traveling without ever being too far from their favorite foods if the something new that was not to their liking. Even at breakfast, the buffet gives your child a chance to try a few different things without having to commit. If, say, they don't love the scrambled eggs and bacon, there are always the Belgian waffles and strawberries to fall back on. At dinner time, after a long day in port with a small child, consider skipping the dining room and specialty restaurants (with their paced multi-course menus and more formal environment) in favor of the buffet, where the meal is faster and they can set eyes on the food before deciding what to try. Just be sure to save room for the dessert spread!

If you and your child are social, consider asking the maître d' or a social director if there are other single parent-child duos onboard. Often, the cruise ship staff can make introductions, easing the stress of finding like-minded passengers to dine or explore with during your sailing.

And when you're in port, be sure to introduce your child to the flavors of the destination, especially with foods they get to try for the first time. Whether that means sampling rich pistachio gelato in Sicily , savory jerk chicken and beef patties in Jamaica , smørrebrød (open-face sandwiches) in Copenhagen, crispy conch fritters in the Bahamas  or fried fish tacos in Cabo San Lucas , it's sure to be a memory the two of you will never forget.

Traveling Alone With Your Child, Being Prepared For Anything

Arruza_060423_0035.eps

Can one parent travel with their child on a cruise? Yes, one parent can travel alone with their kid abroad. Be prepared for anything, and that starts before you set sail, you'll hear lots of people say you should pack your vacation clothing in layers; both for you and your child, regardless of where your ship is sailing. Though you can take that cruise travel tip one step further by packing clothing in a single-color palette. Packing for vacation will be a breeze, and you'll be able to easily mix and match pieces (or change a stained shirt) throughout your weeklong cruise.

Before you finalize your packing list , though, be sure to check the dress code of your sailing trip. You don't want to pack formal attire only to realize you didn't really need those dressy duds after all and can get away with a sundress or a versatile pair of slacks.

Giovannis Mother and Daughter Specialty Dining

While packing, take the time to plan ahead for the cruise activities  you and your child hope to do while at sea. If you're looking for the best mother-daughter cruises  or things to do on a father-son cruise, seek out ways you can maximize your time together onboard, like booking ahead a special dinner, spa day or show. Wherever you cruise in the world, plan for a mix of fun and downtime for both you and your child, so you can come home refreshed and ready to recount highlights of the trip to friends and family. Lean into whatever help the cruise line can provide in making your family vacation one that's smooth sailing all day every day.

Luckily, for single parents, cruise ships have kids clubs and even nurseries and babysitting services to keep the kids occupied while you get some much-needed alone time. Look into which programs would be a fit for your children, and plan to stretch out by the nearby pool with a book the first time they go to the club, just in case they're not comfortable. Then, see if you can book a spa treatment later in the cruise, once you're sure your child has acclimated to the new atmosphere. And be sure to look into evening entertainment while at sea , as some cruises have pajama parties, pool parties, and karaoke nights for tweens and teens, offering the opportunity for a parent to sip a cocktail or see a show. After all, a little "me time" is always on the "things to do" list of a working single parent.
