Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos: Tournament Guide

The Road to Mallorca lands in Portugal with just five weeks left of the 2023 season. Here's everything you need to know before play begins on Thursday.

Seve’s touch

Royal Obidos

The course at Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort is the masterpiece of the great Severiano Ballesteros, and will this week host a European Challenge Tour event for the fourth time in successive years. The Spaniard has created a testing layout that uses the natural surroundings and takes advantage of the undulating terrain. This is evident on several holes. The par three third sees players hit into an island green with the Óbidos lagoon in the background, while the 18th is the perfect closer with panoramic views of the back nine, the clubhouse and the Atlantic Ocean.

Grandstand finishes

Pierre Pinaeu

In it’s three editions to date, the Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos has a history of final day drama. In 2020 Garrick Higgo became the first winner of the event as he triumphed by one stroke thanks to a bogey-free final round 65 that included a birdie at the last to make sure of a maiden title. One year later and it was Marcel Schneider who came out on top. Needing a birdie at the last to take it to a playoff, the German went one better, holing a huge eagle putt to win by one. Last year didn’t disappoint either. Pierre Pineau was one of three Frenchman tied at the top after 72 holes, but a stunning 40-foot eagle putt at the first playoff hole ensured a memorable victory.

There are just five events to go before we find out who from the class of 2023 will earn promotion to the DP World Tour. The top 20 players in the Road to Mallorca Rankings at the conclusion of the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final at Club de Golf Alcanada, Mallorca will do just that. With Casey Jarvis holding his spot as the Number One and several others inside the top ten edging close to securing promotion, there are still plenty of spots available as the season draws to a thrilling conclusion.

The DP World Tour’s Iberian Swing concludes with the Portugal Masters. Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course plays host to the event, and it is one the players enjoy as with the weather turning decidedly cold in northern Europe, it will be short-sleeve weather in the Algarve. Robert MacIntyre is one of the in-form players teeing it up, having secured a win earlier in the season.

Portugal masters field 2022.

After three tournaments in Spain, the DP World Tour heads to its neighbour to the west for the Portugal Masters at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course on the Algarve. There, players will look to replicate the success of Thomas Pieters, who won last year’s tournament.

The Belgian is absent from this year’s field, as is 2020 winner George Coetzee. However, two Englishmen with recent success do appear. Steven Brown won by one shot in 2019 ahead of South Africans Brandon Stone and Justin Walters. The year before that, Tom Lewis won by three shots to claim his second Portugal Masters title, after his first success in the tournament seven years earlier.

Yannick Paul claimed his maiden DP World Tour title in dramatic fashion in last week’s Mallorca Open, holing a birdie putt from off the green to clinch the title. He appears this week hoping to capitalise on the confidence and momentum gained from that win, as do his two nearest competitors at Son Muntander Golf Club, Paul Waring and Nicolai Von Dellingshausen.

The highest-ranked player in this week’s tournament is World No.67 Robert MacIntyre. The Scotsman has recent success on the DP World Tour, having won the Italian Open at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club last month. MacIntyre has enjoyed two more top-10 finishes since, when he tied for eighth in the Open de France and tied for ninth in the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama . With Ryder Cup points up for grabs, he will be hopeful of another strong performance this week as he bids to return to the scene of his recent win in next year's tournament.

One recent winner on the Tour who isn’t in the field is Andalucia Masters victor Adrian Otageui. The Spaniard is instead preparing to compete in the LIV Golf Team Championship at Trump National Doral in Florida following his heroics two weeks ago.

The par-71 course is known for its fast and expansive greens, with strategically placed water and bunkers throughout. The reward for the player who gets to grips with it most efficiently is a first prize of $333,330 from a purse of $2m.

Below is a full breakdown of the prize money and field the 2022 Portugal Masters.

Latest  >  Portugal's Troia resort welcomes the Portugal Pro Golf Tour

Feb 26th, 2019, portugal's troia resort welcomes the portugal pro golf tour, 78 players vying for big prize, words: golfpunk  .

The TROIA Golf Championship Course, one of Europe’s finest courses offering 18 diverse holes and magnificent views, is thrilled to welcome the final stop of the Portugal Pro Golf Tour (PPGT), on 15th – 17th March 2019.

Backed by PGA Portugal, the Portuguese Golf Federation and the Jamega Pro Golf Tour, the Portugal Pro Golf Tour sees over 78 players from around the world compete for 25,000 Euros prize offering, more than double the standard prize money normally seen at such events.

The tournament at TROIA will be the jewel in the crown of the tour. TROIA’s award winning, championship course was designed by renowned American golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior. The course blends seamlessly into the natural landscape whilst offering sweeping sea views. TROIA has previously hosted the Open de Portugal of the European Tour, and the European Amateur Championship of the European Golf Association, amongst many other events.

Located between the Atlantic Ocean and Arrábida mountain range, both golfers and fans alike will be thrilled by the beauty of the TROIA Golf Championship Course, an 18-hole and 72 parcourse that stretches 6,317 metres along the beach. The course was elected in 2011 by Rolex as one of the best golf courses in the world, and is listed in The Rolex World’s Top 1,000 Golf Courses guide. The diverse holes present a challenge for players of all ages and skill levels, requiring the ability to play a multitude of shots.

The PPGT is one of the top events in the Portuguese golf calendar. Entry to the tournament is free and golf enthusiasts are encouraged to attend to watch the action.

Alexandre Barroso, TROIA Golf Director, commented,  ‘We are thrilled to be welcoming the PPGT to TROIA. Players and guests will discover crystal clear waters and a 47km sandy beach, one of the most extensive in Portugal, on one side, and pine forest on the other. The unique natural environment is a strong test of ability and skill regarded as one of the most fascinating golf challenges in Portugal. We look forward to watching the PPGT unfold against TROIA’s stunning backdrop and wish all the players the best of luck.’

José Correia, the President of PGA Portugal commented,  ‘Our aim was to improve the tour and this Tour Championship awards more regular players and raised the quality. The TROIA Golf Championship Course is excellent and challenging, making it the perfect setting for the tournament.’

The PPG is also giving away five invitations for the 2019 Challenge Tour, the second European division, where each tournament has a minimum of 180,000 Euros in prizes.

2021 Portugal Masters – Preview & Tips

By matt tizzard | nov 2, 2021.

QUARTEIRA, PORTUGAL - SEPTEMBER 13: George Coetzee of South Africa holds the trophy following his win during Day Four of the Portugal Masters at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course on September 13, 2020 in Quarteira, Portugal. (Photo by Luke Walker/Getty Images)

As an Englishman when I think of Portugal and The Portugal Masters, my mind casts back to stepping off the TapAir A300. Being welcomed with that unfamiliar wave of warm air wrapping around my face, in tandem with the polite air hostess thanking me for my travel.

I quickly think of the local bars that Vilamoura are going to bless me with. I couldn’t remember the name of the cocktail bar we visited,  so I googled it –  only to find the first choice is “O’Neil’s Irish Bar.” It then dawned on me, that Vilamoura and the Algarve is a typical “Brits abroad” location.

Therefore, it will be no surprise to see this week’s English players backed well by a British crowd at the 2021 Portugal Masters. Played around the holiday and resort-style course of Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, many Brits will be out in force to support players like Matt Wallace, Laurie Canter, Sam Horsfield & Beef!

It’s a flat, target-driven course and of Arnold Palmer design. The greens have complexities throughout, which can make saving par challenging for missed greens.

However, I don’t suspect this to be an issue for players that come into the week with a swing intact. The weather looks a little chillier than usual for a Portugal Masters, around the 15C mark, and the elements will only tackle the players with a light 4MPH breeze.

Greens in Regulation are the order of the week, and I will entertain you with ball strikers that can go on to win. I won’t look to ignore putting, because of our previous 2 winners. George Coetzee & Steven Brown lead the way in strokes gained putting in their respective wins. But my play this week for Fantasy league and my golf tips is to lean towards those that will give themselves chances and hope I run into one with a hot putter!

"I expect that the 20 under mark will likely be the winning number, yet it could be lower. We saw Tom Lewis make 27 birdies in 2018, the same year Oliver Fisher shot the first ever European Tour 59."

Selections (Consider WynnBET for your selections this week across multiple sports!)

Laurie Canter –  (2u EW)

Being the time of year, I have watched some cracking horror films recently. Nothing though will compare to Laurie’s closing 76 in the final round of the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters. I genuinely had a pillow in front of my face.

Nevertheless, the question for me was how does Laurie react to a collapse like that? The answer was a T5th and closing 64 at The Mallorca Golf Open a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps not being strictly in contention relaxed him, and he was able to swing freely without the pressure of being in the mix. Just what the doctor ordered, following the Andalucia collapse.

For me, I want to catch Laurie while he is hot. He enters this week with 3 recent top 10 finishes. I also want to note that 2020 Portugal Masters winner George Coetzee trended well in 2019 here. Laurie did the same finishing 2nd in 2020.

My worry is that for the same or similar odds you can pick up an in-form Matt Wallace or a Sam Horsfield. However, I stick with my guns and continue to back Laurie, hoping for a birdie chainsaw massacre.

Jamie Donaldson – (0.5u EW)

Jamie is playing well. I watched him at the BMW on the Friday and was massively impressed with his ball-striking and putting, amongst a bundle of birdies that lead to a 66.

Another performance of note was in the Cazoo Classic where Jamie finished 3rd, albeit against a weaker field to this one.

He doesn’t tend to play the Portugal Masters but he does step back onto the tee with some form.

He does have a T2nd on the European Tour in the Algarve in the old sister event, The Algarve Open, so maybe some positive experiences to draw upon. Jamie is one of the most senior members of the European Tour.

He gets there on my strokes gained in Approach stat at +0.26. I think this course is one where off the tee isn’t as essential, which will suit the big Welshman. He is also ahead of most of the field in putts per green in regulation (-0.02), with leaders like Garrick Higgo on (-0.06).

This combination of better than average in approach play and on the putting green is what I am looking for. Combine that with some form and there could be a push from Donaldson and a run at a return to the winners’ circle.

Kalle Samooja – (1u EW)

Kalle smashes my target stats and has one good finish around the Portugal Masters in recent years, finishing -10 & T21st in 2019. That year Samooja was 2nd to Justin Walters in Strokes gained in approach (+2.01 vs +2.19).

A trend that has continued through the years. Kalle currently picks up +2.48 strokes on the tour average in greens in regulation and +0.48 stroke on the short stuff throughout the 2021 season.

I think Kalle is a solid pick this week and you will find great value in the price offered (90/1 – 110/1)

Renato Paratore (1.25u EW)

This course is very forgiving which I hope will lead to many birdie puts for Renato. If that is the case and he can find the greens, then we are right to expect birdies. He is 3rd on the European Tour for strokes gained putting (+0.89). He finally rolled the ball very well here in 2018 when he lead in this stat.

It looked like his season was going to fritter away following 4 missed cuts in a row but has picked himself up with a T11 most recently in Mallorca, a T25 at the Andalucia (including a final round 75), and a T9 in the Open de Espania.

His long game is there for him to compete albeit not quite at the levels of a Canter or Samoja. He does tend to just about pick up shots on the field in approach. With the greens being as big as they are this week, on the resort-style course, by giving himself chances he could get on a role and put himself in with a chance.

Oliver Fisher – (0.25u EW)

Often the forgotten man who pops up into start sheets and occasionally leaderboards over recent years, Oliver Fisher famously shot the first 59 around this course in 2018. Also featured in 2019 finishing -12 and only 5 shots behind eventual winner Tom Lewis.

Form again with Oli is of concern, but that 8th place in 2019 fell into the “out of the blue” category. I also think this week would be a time to select a player that is looking for form (e.g an Eddie Pepperell or a first-time winner).

The reason, this course is forgiving, rather wide and will not punish those that may get nervous down the stretch.

I expect him to see the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course as an opportunity to find something. Fisher doesn’t smash the approach stats that I would like to see albeit he isn’t a million miles away on the greens (+0.27).

If there is a course with greens large enough for those approach stats to turn the other way, then the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course is the one. Oli has amazing memories here and will want to find something this week to relight his season & career. This week is definitely a week to pick an outsider or a long shot, mine this week is Fisher.

John Ross Galbraith saved his best round for last in the 54-hole Portugal Pro Tour event at Penina Golf Club on the Algarve, climbing to a tie for 11th overall.

The Whitehead man had covered the opening 36 holes in one-under after rounds of 72 and 73, and birdied just one of the opening nine holes as he turned for home at -1 for the day and -2 overall. He caught fire on the back side, however, birdieing the par-5 10th and par-3 13th holes, and then capping it off with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to shoot a bogey-free five-under and post -6 for the week.

The result comes on the back of a second-place finish at Palmares Golf Club last week as he continues to gear up for the 2024 season.

Fellow countryman Rowan Lester also saved his best effort for the final day, as the Hermitage man made six birdies, but also carded two bogeys and a double-bogey to shoot a two-under 71 and end the week tied for 28th at -1.

Englishman Daniel Smith ran out a three-shot winner after shooting successive 67s to post -15, with Scotland’s Liam Johnston in second, Matthew Hibbs one further back in solo third.

“Outstanding” Troia hailed as Portugal Pro Golf Tour concludes

in Sport · 24 May 2019, 00:00 · 0 Comments

pro tour golf portugal

The tournament – the 22nd and last event of the international circuit sanctioned by PGA of Portugal, the Portuguese Golf Federation and the Jamega Pro Golf Tour – saw around 80 players from across the globe compete for the €25,000 purse, more than double the amount offered at the other events on the Tour.

Whitnell won with a final score of nine-under par after three rounds and said: “I already had great memories of Troia from 2009, winning the Portuguese Amateur Championship, so when it was announced as the Tour Championship venue, I was quietly confident.

“Troia Resort is an outstanding facility and one I would recommend to anyone. The staff were welcoming and the golf course was in first-class condition, making it a very good test for all levels of the game.”

Hannes Rönneblad’s new course record of 65, seven under par, achieved on the last day of the event, may not seem particularly low for a modern pro – but when taking into consideration Troia’s challenging layout, it’s an extremely impressive score that is likely to stand for some time.

The 24-year-old Swede said: “Troia is definitely one of my favourite courses in Europe. There aren’t many places that test your entire game in such a great way – it’s a paradise if you like creativity.

“I was lucky enough to experience this during the Tour Championship, where I shot 65 on the last round. It may sound like a walk in the park, but the course still showed its teeth. So have fun with it and enjoy the beautiful views. I’m always looking forward to my next visit there.”

José Correia, PGA Portugal president, said: “Troia Resort was the perfect venue and the conditions were fantastic. The feedback from the players and organisers was very positive, congratulations to everyone involved for putting on such a great event.”

Pro Golf Tour in Troia

From 15 to 17 March, Troia is hosting the most important golf tournament ever of the international professionals tour, Portugal Pro Golf Tour.

According to José Correia, the chairman of the Portugal PGA and member of the Board of the Portuguese Golf Federation, “Troia Golf is an excellent and challenging course. It is the perfect setting for the tournament and we wish to thank its Director, Alexandre Barroso, for believing in this challenge and embracing it.

The entry to the tournament is free and anybody wishing to watch good golf being played and support national players are most welcome to attend”. We recall that other great competitions, such as the Open de Portugal of the European Tour, and the European Amateur Championship of the European Golf Association, among many other events, have passed though the Troia Golf Championship Course greens

More about Troia Golf:

Located between Sado Estuary and Arrábida Mountain,TROIA GOLF Championship Course is an 18-hole and 72 parcourse that streches 6,317 metres along the beach, with magnificent views over the sea.

Designed by the North American golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior, TROIA GOLF was elected in 2011 by Rolex as one of the best golf courses in the world, and is listed in The Rolex World’s Top 1,000 Golf Courses guide. Also, in 2018, the magazine Golf World rated TROIA GOLF the 17th top golf course of the whole of Continental Europe.

Robert Trent Jones Senior selected hole 3 of Troia’s golf course as one of the best he has ever designed, and included it in his list of ideal 18-hole courses.

There are two holes worth mentioning in particular – no. 3 and no. 18
