2023 cadillac xt4 premium luxury shown in radiant red tintcoat, front 34 angle

  • Lows Cabin finishes disappoint, rough riding 20-inch wheels, engine's voice is rough-edged.
  • Verdict The XT4 looks rich on the outside and seems a good value on paper, but it falls short of its luxury mission in too many areas.

What's New for 2023?

Cadillac's smallest crossover now comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Two new colors are also available to spruce up the 2023 XT4's exterior: Radiant Red Tintcoat and Argent Silver Metallic.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2023 Cadillac XT4 starts at $37,490 and goes up to $41,990 depending on the trim and options.

The Premium Luxury and Sport models both cost almost the same, but since the former doesn't live up to its name, and the latter is better to drive, we'd recommend the XT4 Sport. It has unique wheel designs, blacked-out exterior trim, and exclusive interior accents. The Sport model also has a suspension with adaptive dampers and better-bolstered front seats. To that, we'd add the Comfort and Convenience package (leather interior, ventilated and massaging front seats and more ) and choose the Active Sport suspension (adaptive dampers) to avoid the ride-quality-reducing 20-inch wheels that are required with the Sport Dynamics package.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of all XT4s is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 235 horsepower. It pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. The 2019 XT4 Sport we tested sashayed its way to 60 mph in a lackluster 7.8 seconds—1.5 seconds behind the X1. Despite the difference, the XT4 felt spry around town and when merging onto the highway. Ignore Cadillac's assertion of sportiness with the XT4. It's more of a boulevard cruiser than a sports car. The ride is okay, so long as the road is relatively smooth. Rough stretches of asphalt translate plenty of vibrations and sharp impacts into the cabin, especially when riding on the optional 20-inch wheels. The steering is similarly disappointing and is neither feelsome nor direct in its action. The XT4's only decisive controls are its brakes, which hauled our test car down from 70 mph in our emergency-stopping test in 172 feet with one of the firmest brake pedals we've encountered.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Despite its fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation capability, the XT4 earns wholly average EPA fuel-economy estimates, with front-wheel-drive variants reaching 30 mpg on the highway. In our real-world highway fuel-economy test, our all-wheel-drive test vehicle managed just 27 of its EPA-rated 29 mpg. For more information about the XT4's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The XT4's interior, while comfortable and spacious, isn't as high-class as we expect in this premium segment. The dashboard and upper door panels are covered in a stitched, faux-leather wrap, but lower on the doors and center console, cheaper, sharp-edged plastic persists. The buttons and switches look and feel as though they're likely to be shared with less expensive offerings in the General Motors portfolio. Space is great for the front-seat occupants and decent in the back seat, too. As with its passenger compartment, the XT4's cargo room is spacious. Behind the XT4's rear seat we fit six of our carry-on suitcases, and with the seatbacks folded flat, we managed to fit 18—slightly more than smaller rivals such as the Mini Cooper Countryman . If you're looking for a small SUV that can haul cargo like a larger one, the Volvo XC40 —which held 23 carry-on suitcases—is worth a look.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All XT4 models come with an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Cadillac's CUE software . The touchscreen looks crisp and is tucked slightly into the dashboard. The interface is reasonably easy to use, too, and in addition to touching the screen, the user can also interact via a console-mounted knob. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and a seven-speaker audio system are all standard; navigation is optional, as is a 13-speaker Bose audio system. Selecting the available Technology package (Premium Luxury and Sport models only) adds a digital gauge cluster, a head-up display, and a wireless smartphone-charging pad.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

Cadillac does offer the XT4 with a plethora of driver-assistance features , but not all of them are standard fare. For more information about the XT4's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Cadillac warranty outdoes several of its rivals with powertrain coverage that lasts six years or 70,000 miles. Cadillac offers one free maintenance visit with the purchase of any 2023 model.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers six years or 70,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 12,000 miles

Does Cadillac XT4 Have Adaptive Cruise Control? (Let’s See)

The Cadillac XT4 is a compact sport utility vehicle designed with the newest technologies.

This car is one of Cadillac’s models that captures its significance and comes equipped with more advanced features.

These features include; intelligent connectivity, fun-to-drive agility supported by turbocharged performance, and more.

These features make the Cadillac XT4 popular among youth and tech customers who want a high-spec and value vehicle.

But does the Cadillac XT4 have adaptive cruise control?

Cadillac XT4 has adaptive cruise control. This control helps maintain a selected distance between the driver and the cars in front of you; hence, the automobile automatically adjusts its acceleration. This feature promotes a relaxed journey because it reduces the driver’s need to step on the accelerator and brakes.

What Is Cadillac Adaptive Cruise Control?

Cadillac adaptive cruise control is a feature responsible for automatically slowing down and speeding up your car to keep a good distance between your vehicles and others on the road .

Nevertheless, the driver is responsible for setting the vehicle’s maximum velocity on adaptive cruise control.

The adaptive cruise control uses radar sensors that watch for traffic ahead and hooks the car on the road.

Also, the radar sensor indicates and guides your car to stay within the following distance you set behind the other autos.

Hand-free driving is also an extension of the adaptive cruise control system, which controls velocity and braking when you use it.

You should always pay attention to some aspects of your Cadillac with adaptive cruise control.

These features are as follows;

  • Check if your adaptive cruise control has a traffic jam assist; that is the stop and go part. When your auto control has this function, your car can perform well when there is an extremely slow highway traffic jam.
  • Notice how your car moves smoothly and applies brakes on its own when another vehicle moves in and out of your lane.
  • When driving on a highway and at a lower speed, check the distance your motor leaves when it is in its nearest adaptive cruise control setting.

Pay attention to determine if your auto is at a comfortable distance and, at the same time, not being too far that other cars are always cutting in your front.

  • Lastly, check if your vehicle can alternate between a standard or adaptive cruise control.

How Does Adaptive Cruise Control Work?

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems are designed with several sensors and onboard computers like radar or laser systems to scrutinize other cars on the road carefully.

These features and their operation earns the adaptive cruise control other names; radar cruise control and autonomous cruise control.

When you input your own choice of speed into the ACC system , your car begins to scan its surroundings.

Once the scan completes, the system uses a digital signal processor to make a signal from the radar headway system .

This signal can ascertain the closest vehicle distance . Then, it uses a longitudinal regulator to specify a cautious following distance.

If the distance between your car and another vehicle is very small, the adaptive cruise control system will signal the brake, which will, in turn, slow down your auto.

When on a free road, the system will change the vehicle’s speed back to the speed the driver wants.

One of the benefits of the cruise control system is that it maintains a near-constant speed in your vehicle.

It does this by increasing the airflow when the car speed setting is very low and reducing the airflow to the engine when the auto is almost at its speed setting.

The adaptive cruise control system consists of different components which have their uniqueness. They are;

#1. Adaptive Cruise Control Module:

This part is responsible for determining whether there is a car in front of your car or not.

#2. Engine Control Module:

This regulates the machine throttle based on the information received from the ACC module and device cluster.

#3. Brake Control Module:

The work of the brake control module is always to examine the vehicle’s velocity and use the brake when needed.

#4. Instrument Cluster:

These are the ones that give the driver data about the system. They also send from the cruise buttons to the adaptive cruise control module and the engine control module.

#5. Cruise Buttons:

These buttons are responsible for turning the system on and off when they receive information from the driver.

You can also use them to set your desired cruise speed.

#6. Brake Switch:

The brake switch serves to oversee the braking system . The brake switch removes the cruise control system when you apply your brake manually.

#7. Brake Light:

This light turns on when you or the adaptive cruise control use the brake to indicate to other vehicles behind that you are slowing down.

How Adaptive Cruise Control Works- Things To Avoid

How Do I Know if My Cadillac Has Adaptive Cruise Control?

There are many ways to identify if your Cadillac has adaptive cruise control. One way is to check your car manual.

Under the adaptive cruise control, you will see the icon that depicts the adaptive control.

Then check your car for the same icon , mainly on the set distance control on the steering wheel.

Finally, if you own a new Cadillac model, you will see the icon on the window sticker.

If this icon is present in your vehicle, your auto has adaptive cruise control.

Another way to know if your Cadillac has an adaptive control is by checking the vehicle identification number (VIN).

You can get your car dealer to print out the car build sheet when you know the VIN. The build sheet will show you everything you need to know about your car.

Furthermore, you can drive your car to check its features.

For example, while driving, your car will slow and apply the brake when another vehicle is going slower in your front if it comes equipped with adaptive cruise control.

Also, your car dealer or mechanic can tell you if your Cadillac has the adaptive feature.

When using your adaptive cruise control, you must always put the following safety considerations in your mind;

  • You must always remain focused when driving because the control system cannot brake so much.
  • Always control your vehicle steering since adaptive control does not drive your automobile.
  • Adaptive control does not acknowledge parked, halted, or slow-motion cars. So it would be best if you always were prepared to take action and assign a brake when needed.
  • Make sure you don’t use the adaptive control system on stormy or mountainous roads. Also, when you are on a highway exit, entrance slopes, or trailering, do not use the system. The control system may not discover any vehicles in front in these driving conditions.
  • The control system does not recognize traffic signs, so you will always need to apply a brake any time needed at intersections and lights.

Which Cadillac Models Have Adaptive Cruise Control?

There are a lot of Cadillac models that come equipped with adaptive cruise control.

For example, the 2018- 2020 Cadillac XT6 , 2021 Cadillac XT4, and Cadillac XT5 have an adaptive cruise control system.

Also, the 2021-2022 Cadillac Escalade, 2022 Cadillac XT6, and the 2023 Lyriq (still in production) offers adaptive cruise control.

Adaptive cruise control proves invaluable in the application, improving driving safety and satisfaction.

Therefore Cadillac manufacturers have made this feature a standard feature for its top-tier model across all trims.

So, if you are going for a recent Cadillac model, rest assured that you have the adaptive cruise control equipped.

Adaptive cruise control is a great feature that enhances safety and convenience.

In addition, since it helps with speed control, the system enables you to focus on other characteristics of driving that need you to be clear-headed and make decisions.

So if you are thinking of getting a Cadillac XT4 with an adaptive control cruise, you are right on track.

Can I add adaptive cruise control?

  • Add to quote

I replaced my grill back to oem on my bought-back 2007 DTS Lux II (which is the same as lux III for all other years, I have wood steering wheel, massaging seats, folding mirrors, etc) and I noticed a module up front which looked awfully like the adaptive cruise control in my Mercedes with a similar feature. Looked up the part number and it is indeed a GM active cruise control radar. Does this mean my car is wired up for ACC? And I could add it somehow, possibly with programming and adding the steering wheel buttons (I don't have a gap control on the cruise control side)? If not, very strange that they'd include the part when the feature isn't installed

adaptive cruise control xt4

The module was part of your new grille, or was it already there? ACC cars have a special grille medallion for non-interference with the radar (it's an entirely different grille). The main cruise electronic controller would have to be different for ACC. Check the diagrams and parts lists on one of the parts websites.

Now that I look closer, there is no wiring harness connected to the sensor. I suppose that could be purchased, I just don't know the other end of where it plugs in to. Maybe I just sell the part, it goes for 400 bucks on ebay and I have no idea why it's in my DTS

Further research, you need ABS control module 15844352 and I checked mine, it's 15844351. Not sure if the BCM, ECU, and TCM also need to be updated, but they do not have option codes for K59 (adaptive cruise control)

Somebody goofed at the factory. Considering how complex these machines are, it's amazing that the vast majority turn out fine.

So no one else (who doesn't have the platinum package and k59) has a radar unit behind their grill? I guess now that I have it, and I have a tech2 clone, and access to the repair library, I might as well give it a try. Maybe I could be the only non-platinum in the country to have adaptive cruise control lol

Just to give everyone an update, I wired in the cruise control to the proper wires (positive, ground, 3 canbus wires) and I can fully see the live data from the DSCC on my module. The first time I got in my car I got a "CLEAN RADAR" message on my dash. I bought the special grill with the plastic emblem and no more error. Also, I swapped the steering wheel controls with the ones with the Gap switch. But this is as far as it goes. My adaptive cruise switch will not turn on. "vehicle detected this ignition cycle" on my scan tool is always in a "no" state. So it either isn't calibrating, or I am missing something.

adaptive cruise control xt4

Good work on your part and after reading the steps you undertook and knowing how the adaptave works, my first thought that the unit/system is not receiving a legimate speed signal from your existing module(s). I would think for the function to operate, aside from receiving the return radar wave, it needs to correspond with what speed the vehicle is traveling, hence the gap settings.

When the distance between your vehicle and the object in front of you closes (dependent on gap setting) the ACC will command the ABS module apply the brakes at the minimum allowed space between the vehicles is reached.

My next step will possibly be figuring out how to fix the GAP Switch ERR in the BCM. I thought that was because I didn't actually have the gap switch, but I still get the error even after adding the switch

I did occasionally get "vehicle found this ignition cycle: yes" when I was driving around with no grill (before I got the special grill) but that was before I had the gap switch installed. Not sure why it can't calibrate or find a vehicle right now. I still do have the non-DSCC abs module, but I did flash it to the DSCC software. As far as I can tell that is the only bit of hardware I'm missing. I am hoping not to have to program the BCM, as that'll cause all kind of issues that need to be fixed. As I can see all of the data, as well as get the "CLEAN RADAR" message, I am hoping it works without programming bcm.

Do you have the ability to view the programming ladder logic in real time? You could look for the run permissive rung for that function to operate and see what is holding it up.

What tool would give me access to that? I have a GM computer with VCX nano

As for which particular tool, that I am unaware of but it sounds like your GM scanner (doesn't) have the logic viewing function. I thought I saw something in the past where a technician was able to view it but I could be mistaken.

I have AC Delco TDS and Tech2Win, I'll have to look deeper into it as there are many things that prevent cruise control. I swapped back my old OEM cruise buttons and even the standard crusie control doesn't work now, very frustrating. My ABS does have a "lost communication with suspension" code but not sure if that matters.

adaptive cruise control xt4

I have a 2023 XT5 and has the adaptive cruise control gap button on the steering wheel. The car has all the features except actually stopping once the selected gar is breached. Is there any way of adding that feature to the car? and who would do that? I Live in Orlando FL

My brother is in logistics at FCA. Before that, he ran a parts vendor for all of the Big Three. According to him, it is sometimes less expensive to add those parts that are unused instead of adding them separately.
