Elden Ring guide: Ranni the Witch’s questline walkthrough
Help Ranni on her dark journey
by Jeffrey Parkin
Elden Ring ’s Ranni questline is less of a side quest and more a parallel quest. It’s full of lore and will take you across most of the Lands Between in the many hours it takes you to complete it. It also unlocks an alternate ending to the game.
In this Ranni’s questline guide, we’ll walk you through every step of her dark journey from meeting her, heading to Siofra River with Blaidd , heading to a festival to fight Starscourge Radahn , finding the Eternal Cities of Nokron and Nokstella , collecting the Fingerslayer Blade and the Discarded Palace Key , finding the Dark Moon Ring , heading to the Lake of Rot and the Moonlight Plateau , and, much later, claiming the Dark Moon Greatsword .
Ranni Elden Ring table of contents
Three sisters and ranni’s rise, liurnia, the road to nokron, seluvis and sellen, redmane castle, starscourge radahn, forlorn hound evergaol (optional), nokron, eternal city, give the fingerslayer blade to ranni, carian study hall, renna’s rise, ansel river main and nokstella, eternal city, baleful shadow, open rennala’s chest, lake of rot, astel, naturalborn of the void, moonlight altar.
You’ll actually meet Ranni for the first time — calling herself Renna — when you visit the Church of Elleh in Limgrave after collecting your spectral steed. At that point, she’ll give you the Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes , but she’ll disappear for quite a while until you happen upon her again in Liurnia.
Later, after you make your way through the creepy hand-filled Caria Manor and defeat the Royal Knight Loretta , you’ll have access to a plateau called the Three Sisters .
The Three Sisters are referring to three wizard towers, Renna’s Rise , Ranni’s Rise , and Seluvis’s Rise . To access these three Rises, you’ll have to head into Ranni’s Rise and speak with Ranni the Witch (who called herself Renna when she first met you).
Talk to her until she asks you to enter her service. Do so, and she’ll ask you to speak with three other people in her employ — War Counselor Iji, Preceptor Seluvis, and Blaidd. (It does not seem like you have to have met Blaidd or Smithing Master/War Counselor Iji before this.)
Speak to their spectral forms on the ground floor of Ranni’s Rise, and then return to Ranni. (This is the only way you’ll be able to physically leave the grounds.)
Your first task is to find Nokron, Eternal City with Blaidd .
Blaidd mentions that he’s heading through the well in Mistwood to the underground and asks you to meet him there. Head to East Limgrave . There’s no site of grace near the well, so just pick one and ride.
You’ll find the Siofra River Well along the east side of East Limgrave, a little north of the Minor Erdtree (and northeast of the Mistwood Ruins where you might’ve met Blaidd the first time). Head inside and ride the lift down.
You’ll drop into the Siofra River region. There’s a bit of exploring you can do, but you can only reach a handful of the sites of grace for now. Make your way vaguely east and north.
You’ll find Blaidd behind one of the huge bridge supports. Your progress into Nokron is stalled, though. Blaidd suggests speaking to Seluvis .
Head back to the Three Sisters region — the closest site of grace is at Ranni’s Rise — and head to the southernmost of the three towers.
Here you’ll meet Preceptor Seluvis who is ... unpleasant and has his own stuff going on. Ask him about Nokron, and he’ll point you to Sorceress Sellen in Limgrave and give you the Seluvis’s Introduction item.
Seluvis will also give you a potion for Nepheli Loux , starting his own questline . However, don’t give Ranni anything suspicious if you’d like to complete her storyline. (On the flipside, you have until the Fingerslayer Blade part of Ranni’s quest until you cut off progression in Suluvis’s quest.)
Head to the Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave. If it’s your first visit, you’ll have to make your way past a lot of poisonous flowers and defeat a Mad Pumpkin Head . After the area’s boss is defeated, you’ll get access to the Waypoint Ruins Cellar site of grace and meet Sorceress Sellen.
Speak to her and show her the letter of introduction. She’ll let you know that one General Radahn has to die for you to get into Nokron.
Head back to Blaidd in Siofra River and tell him Sellen’s story. He’ll tell you about a festival being held in Caelid where you can fight Radahn himself who is, by the way, the “strongest of all the demigods.” Blaidd will head to the festival.
Ultimately, you’re heading to Redmane Castle , but you can’t head straight there. Make your way to the southernmost point of Caelid , where you’ll find the Impassible Greatbridge site of grace . You’ll find a Waygate there that will deliver you directly into Redmane Castle . Make your way inside, and check out the (oddly subdued) Radahn Festival.
Speak to the Festival Master — the guy yelling from the nearby rampart — and say you’re “Ready as I’ll ever be.”
Nearby, there’s another Waypoint on the other side of the castle that will take you to the Wailing Dunes where you’ll fight Starscourge Radahn .
The fight against Radahn is one of the hardest in Elden Ring . We won’t go into that here — instead, our dedicated how to beat Radahn guide can help.
Once Radahn is defeated, a star will fall into Limgrave, opening a new entrance to Nokron a little south of Mistwood Ruins. Visit the new Starscourge Radahn site of grace and speak to Blaidd. He says he’ll meet you where the star fell.
If you head to Limgrave and look around the new giant hole in the ground, you won’t find Blaidd.
Instead, head to War Counselor Iji at the Road to the Manor site of grace in Liurnia . Choose his talk option and then ask about Blaidd . He’ll be insistent that you not worry about him.
But let’s worry. Head to the Forlorn Hound Evergoal — you might’ve visited here as part of Blaidd’s early questline — a little south of the Agheel Lake South site of grace .
Stand in the center of the gaol and perform the Finger Snap gesture just like you did to speak to Blaidd the first time. He won’t shop up, but you’ll get the option to speak to him. Hear him out and open the evergaol to free him.
Head back to the Road to the Manor in Liurnia and speak with Iji again. Ask him why is Blaidd in the Evergaol . He’ll do some foreshadowing.
Head back to Limgrave, and you’ll find a gigantic crater just south of the Mistwood Ruins. It’s hard to miss because it’s huge and there’s a cloud of rocks floating above it.
Drop inside and use the ledges to descend carefully — start on the south and east side of the crater and spiral around counterclockwise. You’ll eventually see a dimly lit tunnel along the north side.
Keep heading north and dropping off of ledges until you reach the rooftops of Nokron, Eternal City .
You’ll have to play through most of Nokron at this point. (Our complete Nokron walkthrough can guide you through the entire area, otherwise, just proceed with the following steps to get what you need for Ranni’s quest.)
You’ll start at the Nokron, Eternal City site of grace . From there, you’ll have to head southeast and defeat a Mimic Tear , and then continue up to the Ancestral Woods .
From the Ancestral Woods site of grace, you can drop down into the Night’s Sacred Ground area and, eventually, find the site of grace there. Fighting your way vaguely north along the road from the Night’s Sacred Ground site of grace , you’ll come to a chest with the Fingerslayer Blade inside. There’s also a Waygate here that will return you to the Ancestral Woods site of grace.
If you check the description of the Fingerslayer Blade key item, it says it’s the “hidden treasure of the Eternal City of Nokron,” which is what Ranni asked you to find.
You’re free to keep exploring Nokron at this point (there’s lots of good stuff to collect), but Ranni’s quest requires us to return to her. Head back to Ranni’s Rise in Liurnia and speak with her.
Note for those progressing through Seluvis’s quest , giving Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade will end his questline — preventing its completion.
Talk to her a couple times, and she’ll give you the Carian Inverted Statue. Exhaust her dialogue, and she’ll say she’s heading out on a dark journey.
About halfway up the east side of Liurnia, you’ll find the Carian Study Hall . If you’ve been here before you were only able to fight Preceptor Miriam and collect some goodies. (Our Carian Study Hall walkthrough can provide a complete breakdown of all routes and items in this location.)
Now you have the Carian Inverted Statue, though, walk forward and examine the pedestal in front of the globe right there in the main hall.
Back in the elevator shaft behind the globe, you’ll be able to reach a new area of the Carian Study Hall — well, actually, you’ll be on the underside of the area you could explore before. After you defeat Miriam again, you can make your way down to the ceiling where you’ll find a door that leads to the Liurnia Tower Bridge site of grace .
Follow the bridge east where you’ll fight a Godskin Noble . Continue past to the Divine Tower of Liurnia and ride the elevator to the top where you’ll find a site of grace of the same name.
At the very top of the tower, you’ll find the Cursemark of Death and Stargazer Heirloom on a corpse. The Cursemark description says it was “carved into Lunar Princess Ranni’s discarded flesh.” The Stargazer Heirloom is a talisman that raises intelligence.
Head back to Ranni’s Rise. Ranni won’t be there, but you’ll find a new Ranni’s Chamber site of grace up top.
Head to the tower to the north, Renna’s Rise (Renna, not Ranni). Climb the ladder inside to find the Snow Witch armor set inside a chest.
Continue to the top, and you’ll find a Waygate that teleports you to Ansel River Main .
As soon as you arrive, you’ll be right near a corpse holding a Miniature Ranni doll. Continue south to the Ansel River Main site of grace . At the site of grace, there’s a new option to talk to miniature Ranni . You’ll have to choose it a few times to get her to actually speak.
She’ll ask you to defeat the Baleful Shadows nearby. (You can keep choosing to talk to her and exhaust her dialogue to get a lore dump.)
You’re free to explore as much of Nokstella as you want, but your ultimate goal is the Nokstella Waterfall Basin to the west. You can get there along the ground level, but the upper level is the Eternal City itself and there’s plenty to pick up there.
From the Nokstella Waterfall Basin , look for a tunnel to the south. At the other end, past the basilisks, you’ll encounter the Baleful Shadow.
Once it’s defeated, you’ll get the Discarded Palace Key as a reward and Ranni will ask you to send her love to Blaidd and Iji. Examining the Discarded Place Key says it opens a chest “found in the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria with her mother Rennala.”
Before you leave here, continue south past where you fought the Baleful Shadow and enter the building. Ride the lift and stop at the Lake of Rot Shoreline , first site of grace inside the Lake of Rot . We’ll be back shortly.
You don’t technically have to have completed the Academy of Raya Lucaria by this point, so if you haven’t, do so now. Head to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library . (As an aside, you’ve probably picked up a few Larval Tears while poking around in Nokron and Nokstella, so you can respec your character with Rennala if you want to.)
Open the locked chest off to Rennala’s left. Inside, you’ll find the Dark Moon Ring . The description is pretty depressing, but it doesn’t tell you where to go next.
Head back to the Lake of Rot Shoreline site of grace in the Lake of Rot. Make sure you’ve got plenty of stanching boluses (you can learn to craft them from the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook [7] you might’ve found in Limgrave near Stormveil Castle).
Make your way across the aptly named lake using the buttons to raise safe land to cross. In the south, you’ll find the Grand Cloister and a site of grace of the same name. Clear out the Grand Cloister if you want — there’s an Ulcerated Tree Spirit that’ll drop a Golden Seed .
Your goal is along the river of rot in the south of the Grand Cloister. Look for a coffin perched at the top of a waterfall (rotfall?). Rest in the coffin, and you’ll be transported to a new area and a boss fight.
Another quick note: If you haven’t yet collected the Dark Moon Ring , you’ll be blocked by a barrier that tells you a Ring of Oath is required. The problem is, there’s no such thing. The Ring of Oath is actually the Dark Moon Ring — the oath is kind of implied.
Head north from where the coffin lands, and you’ll come to a fog wall. Inside, you’ll have a bonkers fight against a Malformed Star-like creature named Astel, Naturalborn of the Void .
Our Astel weakness and how to beat guide explains how to win this challenging encounter. You’ll get the Remembrance of the Naturalborn when it’s defeated.
What’s important here is the Deep Ansel Well lift all the way to the north. Ride it up.
You’ll emerge on the Moonlight Altar , a high plateau in the southwest of Liurnia (this is the only way to get up here).
There’s a lot going on up here that you haven’t had access to yet, but your goal is the Cathedral of Manus Celes . You’ll have to fight Glintstone Dragon Adula along the way.
A quick note: Continuing Ranni’s quest from here will lock you out of completing Seluvis’s questline — which is, in turn, related to Nepheli , Sellen , and Dung Eater as well.
Drop into the cave a little south of the site of grace — drop carefully onto the ledge directly under you so you don’t die. Follow the tunnel until you reach Ranni’s and a Two Fingers’ corpses. Approach her and choose wear ring when the prompt appears.
Speak with her again, and she’ll tell you she’s heading to the sky (oh, and that you’re basically engaged now). She’ll leave behind the Dark Moon Greatsword which deals frost and moonlight damage.
This is the end of Ranni’s questline. However, she’ll appear again at the end of the game — completing her questline opens a secret ending.
Ultimately, Ranni’s quest is a pre-requisite for just one of Elden Ring ’s finales. Here’s how to get all endings , and everything to know about new game plus .

Elden Ring Ranni Questline Guide: All Locations and Steps
Elden Ring has a ton of great NPCs who can turn out to be hugely consequential to the plot, and you might miss them entirely on your first playthrough. Ranni the Witch is one particular character whose questline is lengthy, but incredibly worthwhile not only for the great ending she can unlock for you but the many areas you’ll be able to access. Ranni’s questline is not accessible until you’ve gotten pretty far, but once you start it, you’ll want to see it through. Read on for our guide on All Steps and Locations in the Ranni Questline in Elden Ring!
Below is a summary walkthrough for the Ranni questline, but take your time, as this quest has you going all over the map. Note that you’ll potentially meet her at the Church of Elleh, but that’s not actually when her questline begins. If you meet her this way, she’ll introduce herself at first as Renna. But the next time you meet her will be in Liurnia .
Step 1: Clear Caria Manor
Go to Caria Manor in northern Liurnia and defeat Loretta . This gives you access to the exterior of the manor and just around to the west from there, you’ll find the Three Sisters area. The middle tower of the three is Ranni’s Rise , where you must go next, past Glintstone Dragon Adula, which is an optional boss fight. Go inside and speak to Renna here, who will reveal herself to be Ranni. Exhaust her dialogue options and agree to serve her.
Your next destination is Nokron, Eternal City , but getting there takes some time. The next steps vary depending on if you’ve beaten Starscourge Radahn . If you’ve already done so, skip ahead to Step 6 , but in case you haven’t, here is what happens next:
Step 2 (if Radahn is not defeated): Speak to Blaidd in Siofra River
Go to Siofra River around the Hallowhorn Grounds area, where you go to fight the Ancestor Spirit . Speak to Blaidd, who will tell you he does not know the way into Nokron but suggests you consult Seluvis.
Step 3 (if Radahn is not defeated): Speak to Seluvis
You may have met Seluvis briefly when going to Ranni’s Rise. After speaking to Blaidd, speak to Seluvis in his tower just southeast of Ranni’s to get told the next step on your journey, to speak to Sellen in Limgrave. It will feel less like a fetch-quest soon enough.
Step 4 (if Radahn is not defeated): Speak to Sellen in Limgrave
Clear Waypoint Ruins if you haven’t already, be sure to and enjoy the relatively easy fight with the Mad Pumpkin Head . Sellen is locked away behind the door after this boss fight, and if you speak with her, she’ll tell you that the next step to opening up the path to Nokron is after you beat Radahn.
Step 5: Defeat Radahn
Your next step brings you to Caelid , where you must clear Redmane Castle and its boss , and initiate the Radahn Festival in which you fight its namesake boss . Do this, then return to Ranni at her tower.
Step 6: Find the Fingerslayer Blade in Nokron
Ranni will tell you the way has opened to Nokron through the Mistwood in Limgrave. Venture down into this area, clear the enemies, and find the Fingerslayer Blade at the end. Return it to Ranni, and she’ll give you the Carian Inverted Statue granting access to the Divine Tower of Liurnia .
Step 7: Go to Nokstella, Find a Doll, Obey Their Orders
Go to Renna’s Rise, northeast of Ranni’s Rise, and go to the top. Use the teleporter there to reach Nokstella , and near the site of grace, you’ll find a Miniature Ranni doll . Use the site of grace and select the choice to speak to the doll until it responds. Turns out this doll is possessed by Ranni’s spirit, and your next task is to venture deeper into this area and defeat the Baleful Shadow . Do so, and you’ll get the Discarded Palace Key , which you need to use at the chest near where you fought Rennala at Raya Lucaria to get the Dark Moon Ring .
Step 8: Beat the Boss at Lake of Rot’s End
Past where you fought Baleful Shadow, go to the Lake of Rot . Go through this area, preparing your immunity and cures for Scarlet Rot . Go across to the southwestern end, through the pest enemies, to eventually reach a coffin at the top of a waterfall . Get in, and you’ll be brought to the area where you fight Astel, Naturalborn of the Void . Win this fight, and go through the other side from where you enter to find a lift to an unexplored area of Liurnia’s overworld.
Step 9: Go Beneath the Cathedral of Manus Celes
Northeast of where you enter this area, called Moonlight Altar , go to the Cathedral of Manus Celes and feel free to skip the Glintstone Dragon Adula boss that spawns near it. Directly next to the site of grace inside is a large hole in the ground , descend to begin a cutscene where you find Ranni, and seemingly bring her back to life by putting the Dark Moon Ring on her finger. This completes the main steps of the questline, and after this, be sure to grab the Dark Moon Greatsword behind her.
Step 10: Execute Alternate Ending
Without spoiling anything, after you defeat the final boss in Elden Ring, you’ll be able to use a summon sign to bring Ranni in to bring about an alternate ending, and fully complete her questline.
This concludes our guide to All Steps and Locations in the Ranni Questline in Elden Ring! It’s a questline that occupies you for almost all of the game’s story, but a great one with solid rewards. Be sure to check out our other guides , and our review .
Elden Ring is out now for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Series X|S.
Elden Ring Ranni questline and walkthrough
Beat Ranni the Witch's quest in Elden Ring to get the secret ending, the Age of Stars
- Ranni questline walkthrough
- Ranni's secret ending
The Elden Ring Ranni questline is one of the longest in the game, and our walkthrough will take you through the entirety of the Snow Witch's quest for yourself. It's worth doing, too - aside from being one of the more nuanced and complex questlines in Elden Ring , it comes with a whole range of rewards, and a new ending. Yes, Elden Ring's secret ending - and arguably its best ending - is the Age of Stars, and you can only get it by completing Ranni's questline. If you want a comprehensive walkthrough, here's all the steps below, along with map locations to help you get around.
All Elden Ring Ranni questline locations and objectives
Here's the full walkthrough for Ranni's questline in Elden Ring, with more details just below this checklist of steps.
- The first thing you need to do is head to the Three Sisters towers, West of Caria Manor . You'll have to make it through Caria and beat the boss fight Royal Knight Loretta to get there first. Once you're there, head to the middle tower of the three, Ranni's Rise, and go up the lift to meet her personally at the very top. Exhaust her dialogue until she disappears, introducing you to her generals along the way.
- Find Blaidd on Siofra River , where he'll be waiting to talk to you. This quest is actually interwoven with the Elden Ring Blaidd the Half-Wolf locations and questline , and we've got his specific location in Siofra there. Then you have to follow Blaidd's quest all the way until the point where the star falls - after that, things divert again.
- Head down the new crater South of Mistwood into Nokron, Eternal City . Follow the path to the boss fight with the Mimic Tear, kill it, then take the bridge until it goes left into the grassy area. Hug the leftmost cliff until you find a Site of Grace called Night's Sacred Ground, then jump on the roofs and follow them to the ground level church until you find a treasure called the Fingerslayer Blade.
- Take it back to Ranni at Ranni's Rise . She'll give you the Carian Inverted Statue, a key item that acts as a key for a very specific lock.
- Head to the Carian Study Hall in West Liurnia and use the Statue on the altar in front of the entrance to flip the entire tower. Then head up the tower to the bottom (we're so sorry about that), and use the bridge to reach the Divine Tower across to the East. At the top of the Divine Tower is an item called the Cursemark of Death. Grab it off the corpse it's sitting on.
- Now head back to the Three Sisters, this time heading to the Northernmost tower, Renni's Rise. Trigger the teleporting Waygate at the top to be sent to Ainsel River Main, and pack up the Miniature Ranni. Then try talking to it multiple times at the nearest Site of Grace, don't take silence for an answer - eventually it'll talk back. Spooky!
- After getting all you can from the doll, follow the River to Nokstella, Eternal City, and head downwards to the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace (you'll have to take a lift downwards from the water level). Just through the tunnel next to that will be an NPC Invasion called the Baleful Shadow that looks like Blaidd - kill it. After this, the Miniature Ranni will give you the Discarded Palace Key.
- Head to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library , where you fought Rennala, and use the key to open the locked chest just next to her. You'll get the Dark Moon Ring. For more info on the chest and ring itself, take a look at our Elden Ring locked Rennala chest page!
- Head back to where you killed the Baleful Shadow and keep heading Southwest past that area to reach the Lake of Rot . Use the stepping stones to make it over the lake to the Southwest corner and the Grand Cloister building. You'll find in here a coffin on the edge of a waterfall. Get in when prompted - it'll carry you down to the next location.
- This'll take you to a new boss fight called Astel, Naturalborn of the Void . Astel is a tough opponent that uses gravity attacks to enhance his natural swipes and strikes, adding delayed blasts that often trigger a moment after the initial hit. Try to stay behind or under him when possible, using a summon to hold his attention, and dodge far more than you shield - most of his attacks will punch through your defenses.
- Once Astel is dead, head through the arena to the elevator, which'll carry you up to surface level on the raised plateau in Liurnia. You'll be attacked by a dragon up here, but you don't have to fight it - just head to the Cathedral of Manus Celes in the Northeast corner and drop down the ravine below to find Ranni's body. Interact with it to put the ring on her hand and complete her quest.
Keep in mind that you won't be able to do this quest early on in the game - you'll have to open up a lot of the map and beat a lot of bosses before you can help Ranni achieve her goals. We've also split the maps into the two relevant halves - above ground and below ground (mainly the area of Nokstella and the Lake of Rot) - so make sure you're checking the right ones each time.
(Oh and keep in mind that you can meet Ranni before this, at the Church of Elleh - where the Merchant Kale works - after you get the horse Torrent, where she presents herself under the not-especially-creative pseudonym Renna. Still, this is a totally optional encounter and not necessary to completing the Ranni questline, so don't worry if you miss the chance!)
Once Ranni's questline is over, you can complete the final parts of Blaidd's questline if you're pursuing that story too.
How to get Ranni's secret ending
Once you've done Ranni's questline, this gives you the choice to trigger the secret ending, but won't trigger it automatically. A fter defeating the final boss of Elden Ring outlined in our Elden Ring main bosses guide, you'll see a blue summoning sign on the ground that'll allow you to bring in Ranni. Trigger it to start the Age of Stars ending, a permanent decision that'll end the game in the way she wishes. Or if you want to find any of the other Elden Ring endings , check out our guide on how to get any and all of them!
Ranni questline rewards
There's numerous rewards threaded through Ranni's questline, some a direct prize for completing her quest, others given by mandatory enemies you need to beat throughout. Here's the full list:
- Dark Moon Greatsword: A unique Greatsword with good Int-scaling, frost damage and the ability to empower itself temporarily with the Moonlight Greatsword Ash of War. It also requires Int 38 to use, and is received at the very end of the quest, after finding Ranni's body at the Cathedral of Manus Celes. It's also a recurring item in FromSoftware's games, found in titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne - so it's an easter egg too!
- Remembrance of the Naturalborn: A remembrance dropped by Astel after killing it, which can be used with Finger Reader Enia at the Roundtable Hold to exchange for a unique Ash of War, Waves of Darkness, which adds Magic Affinity to larger melee weapons and grants a special AOE strike. You can also turn it into a flail with Intelligence scaling called Bastard's Stars.
- Silver Tear Mask and two Larval Tears: Killing the Mimic Tear at the entrance to Nokron gets you a unique (if ugly) helmet that boosts your Arcane stat, and two Larval Tears. If you're not sure how those are used, check out our Elden Ring respec and Larval Tears page on how you can use them to literally redefine yourself.
- Loretta's Greatbow and Ash of War: Loretta's Slash: You need to go through Royal Knight Loretta to reach Ranni's Rise, and she'll drop the Greatbow (actually a sorcery that fires a special arrow, rather than equipment), and the Loretta's Slash Ash of War, which is used on spears and polearms to give them Magic Affinity and a strong upwards strike attack.

Elden Ring Ranni questline and how to get Ranni to appear
Journey deep beneath the Lands Between and find the Moonlight Greatsword.
The Ranni quest in Elden Ring is one of the longer side objectives in the game - and one with some of the biggest challenges.
Not only is learning about one of the game's three witches one of the most rewarding in terms of lore, but you'll earn the powerful Moonlight Greatsword , a recurring weapon that can be found in virtually every FromSoftware game.
It is also the route to arguably the best Elden Ring ending, Age of Stars .
Ranni's questline has many steps, some which can be easy to miss and prevent you from progressing - and hopefully this step-by-step quest explainer puts helps ensure you see your servitude to her through to the end.
On this page:
Where to find Ranni in Elden Ring
How to reach nokron the eternal city in elden ring, how to find the finger slayer blade, how to reach nokstella and get the dark moon ring, how to find the lake of rot, how to find ranni for the last time.
You can meet Ranni very early on, once you have spoken to Melia and unlocked Torrent at the 'Gatefront' Site of Grace then travelled back to the Church of Elleh. Ranni will appear there - giving you the Spirit Calling Bell that allows you to summon spirit ashes .
To begin Ranni's quest proper, you have to find her at Ranni's Rise . Reaching this location requires you to head to Carian Manor , located above the lake of Liurnia in the northwest. You can reach it from Kingsrealm Ruins via a fake wall, where, behind it, you'll see a giant blacksmith called Iji to your left while the manor is further north.
Explore the manor and you'll eventually reach the top where you have to fight Royal Knight Loretta . Upon defeating her, you'll be able to pass through a door that takes you to Three Sisters - an area with three towers. The tower you're looking for is Ranni's Rise. Activate the Site of Grace, then head to the top and you'll meet with the witch once more who introduces herself with her real name this time.
Accept being in her servitude and you'll begin your quest to find Nokron, the Eternal City .
Nokron is just above the Siofra River Well Depths in Elden Ring, and you can actually teleport to a part of it earlier on. To find the proper entrance to the eternal city, however, you first need to defeat Starscourge Radahn , who's located in Redmane Castle over in Caelid .
You may have already visited the castle if you had gone to Caelid earlier to farm runes near Impassable Greatbridge. Be warned that if you come here too early, you'll have to fight two very tough mini-bosses before you can reach Radhan himself. By following Ranni's questline, however, you'll be able to skip this unpleasantness.
Also, at Three Sisters, there is a tower to the south called Seluvius' Rise where you'll meet the sorcerer Seluvius. He'll tell you to give a potion to Nepheli , an NPC you may have already met at the Roundtable Hold or who you summoned to help in the Godrick boss fight. Talk to Seluvius again and he'll give you a letter of introduction to Selen.
If you haven't already done so when you were exploring Limgrave, Selen (our recommendation for a sorcery teacher early in the game) is located beneath Waypoint Ruins where you'll need to fight a mini-boss, before you can open the door to the room she's trapped in. Once you give her the letter, she'll explain that you need to kill Radhan.
If you had spoken to Blaidd , who was looking for a way to Nokron from the Siofra River Well Depths, go speak to him again to tell him about Radhan, he'll mention the festival of combat at Redmane Castle and, once he says he'll meet you there, you can safely head back to Redmane Castle to initiate the next steps to actually fight Radhan.
Of course, even if you've skipped the tough mini-bosses beforehand, Radhan himself is still incredibly difficult with very powerful attacks that can one-shot you if you don't have high defence or enough HP. Fortunately, you can also summon other NPCs to help in the fight, while the vast size of the area means you can also summon Torrent.
Once you've defeated Radhan, a cutscene will play and you'll see a star falling to earth, which has crashed in East Limgrave. Fast-travel to West Fort Haight and you'll see that part of the area has been reduced to floating rubble, with a larger crater forming the path to Nokron.
There's plenty to explore in Nokron, including a Mimic Tear you'll have to fight who'll drop a Larval Tear . You can also find a Mimic Tear location to use as ashes from the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace, and is our pick for the best summon in Elden Ring . Don't miss it!
Beyond that, what you're looking for specifically is the Finger Slayer Blade, which isn't a weapon, despite the name, but a key item that will allow you to progress Ranni's questline. It can be found inside a room beneath a statue of a giant finger reader.
It's worth noting with the Finger Slayer Blade in your possession, you can now start the Fia quest , if you wish to pursue the Age of Duskborn ending .
Return to Ranni's Rise and give this to Ranni and she will give you the Carian Inverted Statue. The item isn't necessary to this questline, but as it might take a while for the next part of the quest to happen, you could try making your way to Liurnia's divine tower as this is key to unlocking the path.
When you next return to Ranni's Rise in Elden Ring, you'll see that Ranni has disappeared, her spot replaced with a Site of Grace. Where you'll want to go now is Renna's Rise - the tower to the north of Three Sisters. The entrance was previously blocked by a seal, but you should be able to enter now; here you'll find a chest containing the snow witch's clothes, while at the top is a teleport which will take you to the Ainsel River underground.
You will have been able to explore the Ainsel River Well Depths earlier via a lift in East Liurnia, but it will have only taken you so far. The teleport in Renna's Rise is how you reach the other parts as well as to another eternal city, Nokstella. Nonetheless, we do recommend exploring the other section of Ainsel River as that's where you'll be able to find the Map Fragment for the area.
From where you're teleported, head forward and you'll pick up a key item, a miniature Ranni doll . There's also a Site of Grace nearby called Ainsel River Main . Rest there and you'll see that you have an option to speak to the doll.
You won't get any replies initially, but try speaking to her a few more times and she will eventually respond and instruct you to go to Nokstella to kill some shades. Make sure you continue talking to her a few more times by resting at other Sites of Grace until you no longer have an option to speak to her.
To find Nokstella, continue down the path past the large centipede-like creature shooting lighting and the giant ants and you'll eventually reach Nokstella, with a ladder taking you down to another Site of Grace.
You can explore Nokstella's buildings, which include a couple of giant iron balls that can be killed to farm Larval Tears . You'll want to follow the path on the ground, populated by ant-riding monks and blobs emitting electrical energy (killing them will, however, have them sending a shockwave that can damage other enemies in its AOE). You should eventually reach a lift on the left that will take you down to Nokstella Waterfall Basin.
There's some basilisks that you can run past to avoid being cursed and you'll come to an area that's taken an ominous shade of red. Rather apt as you'll also be ambushed by Blaidd. Kill him and Ranni will thank you, giving you the Discarded Palace Key .
If you read the item description, you'll know that this key can be used to open the locked treasure chest in the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria, where Rennala is located to respec your character . Inside the chest is the Dark Moon Ring. Don't forget to do this or else you'll find your progress blocked later on.
From where you defeated Blaidd in Elden Ring, continue to a building on the right and you'll find another lift that takes you even further down and you'll discover that there's still more to this underground area. You've come to Lake of Rot , which does exactly what it says on the tin. Stay too long in the water and you'll be inflicted with the dreaded Scarlet Rot, Elden Ring's equivalent of toxic.
In order to reach the Grand Cloister up ahead, you have two choices. You can carefully navigate the lake by visiting small islands with a switch that gradually raises other structures. These structures also have switches which will raise more structures and, by pressing them, you'll create a crossing across the lake. You'll, however, want to take a break to wait for the rot gauge to slowly go back down or have some items or spells to cure the rot status.
Alternatively, just get inflicted with rot and leg it for the Cloister, making sure you refill your HP with your flask - if you've been upgrading your flask with Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears, then you'll easily make it with charges to spare. There'll also be a Site of Grace where you can naturally restore your health, cure your status and replenish your flask.
From there, make your way down with a few careful drops down some ledges on the side; (while it looks like you have to jump over the first gap, you can actually drop down to the next ledge below to advance.
Be careful of the bug guards gathered below - sneak past or take care of them then, before turning left to follow the stream to what looks like a dead end save for a stone coffin at the edge of the waterfall. Approach it and a cutscene will play as you climb in to ride it down to a new destination.
In this new location, a boss fog wall should prepare you for what's ahead: Astel, Naturalborn of the Void.
He's similar to the centipede/scorpion-type monsters that fire electricity at you, except he's bigger and hits harder. He also packs some large AoE attacks and floats around, so you want to make sure you're either doing aerial attacks or that your weapon can reach his head, which you'll automatically lock on to.
Once he's dead, proceed onwards. If you didn't go back to the Grand Library to get the Dark Moon Ring, make sure you do that now, otherwise you'll be met with a seal blocking your path until you have the 'Ring of Oath'.
Got the ring? Then head on up the lift, which is a long ride as this takes you all the way back up to the surface. In fact, it takes you to the Moonlight Altar, an area above the Village of the Albinaurics . The village is also home to one of the Haligtree Secret Medallion locations .
At the altar you'll find a fierce dragon that you can fight or you can move on and make your way to the Cathedral of Manus Celes in front of you. Inside you'll find quite a few Starlight Shards, but what you're looking for is a hole in the floor which will take you deep down to where Ranni is.
Slip the Dark Moon Ring on her finger and she awakens to thank you once more before disappearing for the last time, leaving behind the Darkmoon Greatsword. Not the sword you expected, at least at first, as its unique skill is what transforms it into the Moonlight Greatsword.
And that's the end of Ranni's quest. You can, however, still find Blaidd outside the steps of Ranni's Rise, where you can fight him once more to claim all his gear for yourself, and you can also speak to Iji once more for some more lore to tie things up.
Hope you enjoy Ranni's questline!

Elden Ring Ranni quest guide: Nokron Eternal City, Lake of Rot, and Moonlight Altar
- Author: Ryan Woodrow
Many an Elden Ring player has been enticed by Ranni’s charms. She’s a strange and mysterious character and the fact that you have to go through a tough trial to even meet her immediately makes players intrigued to see what more she has to offer. Turns out she has quite a lot to offer, as she’ll send you on a long and winding quest, and doing as she asks even unlocks a secret ending.
We’ll explain where to find Ranni, and how to complete every step of her gauntlet of a quest featuring multiple tough areas and bosses.
How to find Three Sisters in Elden Ring
FromSoftware
Three Sisters, which leads the way to Ranni’s Rise, is on the western side of the map. It’s slightly below Volcano Manor and the surrounding region. To get there, you’ll need to approach from the south, heading up along the west side of Liurnia of the Lakes.
Once you’ve reached Kingsrealm Ruins, find a large wall on the north side of the ruins. Strike it and it will reveal itself as an illusion, letting you continue on to Three Sisters. The boss Royal Knight Loretta will stand in your path, but defeating her will open the way to Ranni. However, she will refuse to let you serve her unless you’ve already defeated Starscourge Radahn, a boss found in Caelid.
How to find Nokron Eternal City in Elden Ring
Once you’ve defeated Caelid, a meteor will fall from the sky, however, make sure you go and talk to Ranni before investigating it, or you won’t be able to claim the treasure it revealed.
She’ll task you with investigating the fallen meteor, which landed in the Mistwood Outskirts, where you can investigate the floating rocks and head down into Nokron Eternal City. This is a tough dungeon, and at the end you will need to fight a mimic of yourself. Defeat it and head across the bridge into a more open area.
Stay as far left on the map as you can and eventually, you’ll encounter a Site of Grace. From there, hop along the building ledges to reach the Night’s Sacred Ground, a place full of horrible slime enemies.
Once you’ve reached the bottom, you’ll want to use the Stonesward Key (if you have it), as this will unlock a dungeon that rewards you with the powerful Mimic Tear Ashes summon.
Whether you complete or bypass that dungeon, you can continue up – fighting a sentient boulder along the way – to the statue of the dead creature where there is a chest containing the Fingerslayer Blade.
Give it to Ranni and your reward will be the Carian Inverted Statue.
Carian Study Hall and Godskin Noble
We’ve already done a full guide on Carian Study Hall in Elden Ring , how to clear it, and how to solve its pedestal puzzle. For Ranni’s quest, all you need to do is place the Carian Inverted Statue into the pedestal, which will invert the whole area.
Head over to the elevator which takes you out onto a new platform where you’ll have to kill Preceptor Miriam (for a second time if you already cleared the dungeon normally). The Lucidity Sorcery spell is your reward.
Now you can reach the area with the chandeliers, where you’ll need to perform a careful drop onto the beams below you. Here you can finally get on board an elevator that was previously out of reach, and it will take you to the Divine Tower of Liurnia.
A boss battle is up next, this time with the Godskin Noble, although he will be easier to defeat than in your previous encounter as you’ll be able to use your horse in this wide open space. Charging and retreating continuously is the way to go for this fight, and you’ll get the Godskin Noble armor set for your efforts.
All that’s left to do is climb to the top of the Divine Tower, where you’ll find the Stargazer’s Heirloom and the Cursemark of Death.
Renna’s Rise and the Baleful Shadow
Return to Three Sisters and Ranni isn’t there anymore, however, with the Cursemark of Death you can now access Renna’s Rise. Inside is the Snow Witch armor and apparatus to teleport you to a previously inaccessible area of the Ainsel River Well. Nearby is a coffin with a Miniature Ranni next to it – pick it up.
Use the nearby Site of Grace to talk to it, and you’ll be directed to kill the Baleful Shadow in Nokstella Eternal City. Thankfully, you can get right to it by heading up the right-hand path from where you appeared. As you progress along the path, you can talk to the Miniature Ranni at every grace site along the way to learn more about her backstory too.
Defeat the boss in there, open Rennala’s chest with the Discarded Palace Key is drops, and you’ll get the Dark Moon Ring. Now – and I’m really sorry about this – it’s time to head to the Lake of Rot.
Lake of Rot
I hope you’re ready to tank a ridiculous amount of damage, as you have to carefully yet quickly navigate this large area and get to the door on the other side. Sounds easy, except for the fact that touching almost anything here will infect you with Scarlet Rot.
If you have the health and healing capabilities, then you might be able to tank the run across, but we recommend a more measured approach. If you bring boluses you can mitigate the rot effect to some extent, but your main goal is to find the pressure plates that raise platforms in the rot, allowing you to more safely traverse the area.
There are plenty of things to side-track you in this area too, so don’t just rush straight through it, but either way, your objective is the Grand Cloister Site of Grace. Carry on down the river and eventually find a coffin. Interact with it and you’ll be transported to the next area.
Astel Naturalborn of the Void
This secret boss may have an incredibly intimidating name, but provided you’re at a high enough level and well-equipped, he’s not too difficult, especially if you took our earlier advice and picked up the Mimic Tear summon.
You should stay close for this fight, as his ranged attacks are a pain to deal with. That said, make sure you back off whenever it charges up a big ball of energy, as that AoE attack does massive damage. In phase 2 things get really heated as meteors rain from the sky. Rolling or blocking can deal with these, but either way try to close the distance between you and Astel so you have a moment to strike.
You’ll get Rememberance of the Naturalborn for defeating him, which you can trade at the Roundtable Hold for your choice of two powerful items. Once that’s done a Site of Grace will appear next to a tunnel and it’s off to yet another new area – we warned you, Ranni really puts you through a gauntlet.
Moonlight Altar
This beautiful locale would be the perfect holiday destination if it wasn’t for the Glintstone Dragon Adula roaming about the place. Strictly speaking this boss is optional if you don’t feel like it, but we recommend you take it down, as it’s no different from any other dragon you’ve faced in the game.
Whether you fight it or not, your next destination is the Cathedral of Manus Celes, where you can get a lot of Starlight Shards. After a quick grace site pit stop, jump down the hole nearby until you reach a dead Two Fingers. The Ranni doll can be interacted with here for a cutscene, and viola! Your secret Elden Ring ending involving Ranni has been unlocked.
There is a more substantial reward though, in the form of the massive Dark Moon Greatsword. This also unlocked one more secret boss, as if you return to Ranni’s Rise you can fight Blaidd the Half-Wolf to earn his armor and Royal Greatsword.

Ranni the Witch Quest Walkthrough
Ranni the Witch is one of Elden Ring's more notable characters, with her questline connected to several NPCs and tied to the Age of Stars ending for the game. Follow the steps below to complete her questline and unlock her alternate ending.
Meet Ranni in Ranni's Rise
To begin Ranni's questline, players will need to reach the Three Sisters area via Caria Manor in Liurnia . Once there, head over to Ranni's Rise and speak to her at the very top.
It is here that Ranni will tell you that her real name is, in fact, Ranni the Witch and not Renna. Agree to serve Ranni to begin her questline.
Defeat Royal Knight Loretta
In order to access the Three Sisters area, players will first need to defeat its guardian, Royal Knight Loretta . She is a tough, agile boss that uses a lot of spell attacks, so make sure to prepare for her fight accordingly.
How to Beat Royal Knight Loretta
Complete Rogier's Questline
For players who want to keep Rogier alive for a little longer, do not meet Ranni unless you have already given him the Black Knifeprint . Otherwise, speaking to Ranni will cause him to enter a deep sleep and eventually die.
Rogier Questline and Location
Meet Ranni and Her Servants
After you pledge your service to Ranni, she will ask you to meet her servants in the tower's lower floors. Speak to Iji , Blaidd , and Seluvis , before returning to Ranni and exhausting her dialogue.
Help Blaidd at the Siofra River
Your new task is to help Blaidd find the entrance to Nokron, Eternal City . Meet up with him at the Siofra River and help him look for a way to reach the elusive city.
Note : You can skip this entire arc and just head over to Caelid to fight Radahn. However, you will be missing out on some story dialogue from Sellen, as well as interactions with both Seluvis and Blaidd.
Go to the Siofra River
For players who have not gone to the Siofra River, this underground area can be accessed by using the Siofra River Well elevator in Limgrave . Head over there and explore the underground area until you find Blaidd.
Siofra River Interactive Map and Region Guide
Speak to Blaidd at the Siofra River
Once you find Blaidd, speak to him about Nokron. He will ask you to look for a way into the city while also suggesting that Seluvis may know a thing or two about finding the path to Nokron. Complete this part of his questline to know more about Ranni's destiny.
Blaidd the Half-Wolf Questline and Location
Defeat Starscourge Radahn
If you helped out Blaidd, you will know that the only way to get to Nokron is by defeating Starscourge Radahn. Head over to Redmane Castle in Caelid , and participate in the Festival of Combat organized by Jerren .
Once the general is defeated, the way to Nokron should now be open. Speak to Blaidd beside the site of grace before heading over to the new underground entrance in Limgrave.
How to Beat Starscourge Radahn
Retrieve the Fingerslaying Blade in Nokron
With the way to Nokron open, the next step is getting the Fingerslayer Blade key item. The blade can be found inside a building that has a giant corpse sitting on top of it.
Go to Nokron via the Limgrave Crater
Nokron's entrance will appear in Limgrave, just south of the Mistwood Ruins . Fast travel to the Fort Haight West site of grace to arrive at the lip of the crater, immediately.
Descend into the underground via the opening and explore this new location situated above the Siofra River. The goal is to make it to the large fog gate of the Mimic Tear boss fight.
Nokron, Eternal City Location and What to Do
Defeat the Mimic Tear Boss
Another boss players will have to face will be in Nokron itself. Dubbed The Mimic , this boss will copy your current character's loadout and fight you with it. Defeat it in order to unlock the path to the Fingerslayer Blade .
Tip : Since the Mimic copies your character loadout, enter the arena with your weapons unequipped. Once it finishes copying your character, re-equip your items and fight against a boss that only uses fists.
Retrieve the Fingerslaying Blade
The Fingerslaying Blade can be found inside a large chest to the north of the Night's Sacred Ground site of grace. Loot the chest to get the key item as well as a Great Ghost Glovewort used to upgrade renowed ashes to +10.
Warning: Silver tears will patrol the streets leading up to the structure with the chest. Pay close attention to the Mimic Tear right in front of the building as it takes on the form of a large troll.
Give the Fingerslaying Blade to Ranni
With the blade secure, return to Ranni's Rise and give the blade to Ranni. She will thank you for your services and reward you with the Carian Inverted Statue . Exhaust her dialogue to continue her quest.
Note : The statue can be used to obtain the Cursemark of Death from the Caria Study Hall . This key item is used during Fia's questline .
Follow Ranni to the Ainsel River
Ranni will now have left the tower. To follow her, head over to Renna's Rise (the previously locked tower) within the Three Sisters area. At the very top should be a waygate that takes you to the Ainsel River Main.
Loot the Miniature Ranni key item in the coffin directly in front of you, then keep speaking to it at the nearby site of grace to prompt Ranni's next task for you. Defeat the Baleful Shadow to fulfill her request.
Go to the Ainsel River via Renna's Rise
To follow Ranni to the Ainsel River, players will need to head to Renna's Rise and use the waygate at the top. Interact with it to teleport to the Ainsel River Main area.
Note : Ranni's armor set can be found in Renna's Rise. After using the ladder to climb up to the upper floors, immediately turn around and there should be a chest there containing the Snow Witch Robe , Snow Witch Hat , and Snow Witch Skirt .
Retrieve and Speak to Miniature Ranni
After teleporting, loot the item inside of a coffin directly in front of you. This will be the Miniature Ranni key item you need to progress. Keep speaking to her at the nearby site of grace until she gives you your next task.
Note : The option to speak to Miniature Ranni will only appear in two sites of grace . For this part of the quest, the Ainsel River Main site of grace will unlock the option to speak to it.
Go to Nokstella the Eternal City
After Ranni gives you the task, keep following the river until you arrive at Nokstella, Eternal City . There will be an elevator along the river that takes you down to the Baleful Shadow.
Nokstella, Eternal City Location and What to Do
Defeat the Baleful Shadow
The Baleful Shadow is a mini-boss that takes on the form of Blaidd the Half-Wolf . Players will need to defeat it in order to acquire the Discarded Palace Key .
Warning: Just like NPC invaders, this mini-boss also has the ability to use Crimson Flasks that restore its HP. Keep an eye out for when it does to immediately go in for a punish.
Speak to Miniature Ranni at Ranni's Rise
While this step is entirely optional, players can return to Ranni's Rise for additional dialogue with Miniature Ranni. Simply head up to Ranni's old room and rest at the new site of grace there. The option for more dialogue will appear while resting.
Retrieve the Dark Moon Ring
A key part to Ranni's questline is the defeat of Rennala, Queen of the Moon , one of the main story bosses in Elden Ring.
After securing the Discarded Palace Key from the Baleful Shadow, you will need to return to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library and open the chest next to Rennala. Retrieve the Dark Moon Ring from the chest as this will be needed to get to the Moonlight Altar after Astel.
Defeat Astel Naturalborn of the Void
The last boss to be beaten to reach Ranni's final meeting location is Astel, Naturalborn of the Void . Defeat him in order to unlock the tunnel leading to the Moonlight Altar area in Liurnia.
Cross the Lake of Rot
Behind where you fought the Baleful Shadow is an elevator leading down to an entirely new area called the Lake of Rot . Players will have to cross it and enter the large temple on the other side.
Tip : Try not to waste Preserving Boluses here. The bridges you can trigger will not cover the entire distance , so it will be better to just out-heal the damage and keep running until you reach the large temple structure on the other side.
Enter Coffin at the Grand Cloister
Once inside the temple called the Grand Cloister , parkour your way down and follow the river of blood. Enter the coffin you find to the left of the worshipping enemies and use it to get to Astel's boss arena.
Defeat Astel and Unlock the Moonlight Altar
After emerging from the coffin, enter the large fog gate and defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. He is the last obstacle between you and the Moonlight Altar area.
How to Beat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void
Go to the Moonlight Altar
With the Dark Moon Ring in your possession, head to the back of Astel's boss room and go through the large corridor leading up to an elevator. Take the elevator up to arrive at the southwest end of Liurnia called the Moonlight Altar
This area will have a lot of items to find and bosses to fight, however, the goal is to reach the Cathedral of Manus Celes at the top of the large hill.
Meet Ranni Under the Cathedral of Manus Celes
Once you reach the Cathedral of Manus Celes enter the hole beside the site of grace. Follow it all the way down to find Ranni at the end of the tunnel.
Approach her and put the Dark Moon Ring on her finger. Eventually, she will appear before you in her witch garb for a goodbye. At the end of this, players will receive the Dark Moon Greatsword as a reward.
Summon Ranni at the Erdtree
With all the steps complete, Ranni's Age of Stars ending should now be unlocked once players defeat the Elden Beast . Use the Blue Summon Sign next to Marika to get Ranni's ending.
Warning: Players can still be locked out of this ending if they embrace the Three Fingers and inherit the Frenzied Flame. The only way to re-unlock it is by getting Miquella's Needle during Millicent's questline .
How to Get the Age of the Stars Ending
Ranni the Witch Location
Located at the church of elleh.
You can find Ranni the Witch sitting on the ruined walls of the Church of Elleh . The church is directly north from the First Step Site of Grace and close to the patrolling Tree Sentinel boss.
Only Appears After Meeting Melina
Ranni the Witch only appears after the Tarnished receives the Spectral Steed Ring from Melina at the Gatefront site of grace. Players will need to fast travel to the Church of Elleh in order to meet her for the first time. How to Fast Travel
Gives the Spirit Calling Bell
When players first meet Ranni, she will introduce herself as Renna and ask whether you are the new master of Torrent (the mount). Answering yes will have her give you the Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes .
How to Summon Spirit Ashes
Ranni the Witch Armor and Weapon Drops
Has no drops and cannot be attacked.
Ranni is major character in Elden Ring; players cannot deal damage against her, therefore she has no drops.
If you fancy Ranni's armor, the Snow Witch armor set is identical to what she's wearing in game.

- Ranni's Ending: The Age of Stars
Question: Where can I find Ranni’s hat?
- Question: Is this quest worth it if I'm not a sorcerer?
Question: Can we save Blaidd from his fate?
The ending of a Soulsborne game is a big deal. The countless hours you have put into your character and the many brutal deaths on your journey will leave players clamoring for a satisfying end to their adventure. This is especially true in Elden Ring , which has six different endings you can get. One of these endings entails you bringing on the ‘Age of Stars,’ requiring you to complete several tasks for Ranni the Witch, an in-game NPC. Not only are you getting the Age of Stars ending when you complete Ranni’s quest, but you will also receive many special items fit for a sorcerer.
Ranni’s questline is one of the longest ones you will encounter in the game, as there are many essential steps you must take at specific points to complete it fully. I enjoy this ending, and helping Ranni in her journey gives somewhat of a happier outcome compared to the traditional conclusions of Soulsborne games. Below, I will go through the questline step-by-step to ensure you don’t miss out on important events.
Of course, before starting this questline, you will need to speak to Ranni atop her Rise. Ranni’s Rise is located in the Northern part of Lurina of the Lakes and can be accessed after the fight with Royal Knight Loretta in Carnia Manor. Head towards the entrance of the Rise and head inside. Head through the Rise upstairs until you reach a grace point, and then be sure to interact with it.
At this point, all you need to do is take the elevator, continue up the stairs towards the top of the Rise, and Ranni the Witch should be sitting in her chair, waiting for you. Talk to Ranni until she presents you with this option;
“Wilt thou enter into my service? I am the Witch Ranni. I stole Death long ago, and search now for the dark path. That I might one day spend the whole of it, and rid the world of all that came before.”
To start the questline, be sure to enter into her service. This will allow you to travel back down into the Rise, and meet the others who were previously invisible. Before leaving, exhaust all of her dialogue to trigger everything. Going downstairs, you will meet:
- Blaidd (Wolf Warrior)
- Iji (War Councilor)
- Seluvis (Sorcerer)
To leave the Rise, you will need to talk to Blaidd and Seluvis only once but will need to speak to Iji twice. Seluvis is especially not welcoming, but Iji and Blaidd are. They will discuss Nokron, the city with the treasure Ranni needs. After talking to all of them, head back upstairs to chat with Ranni again. She will warn you that she is about to enter her slumber, and this can be annoying because if you don’t know what to do in the quest, it doesn’t help to have Ranni sleeping, unable to offer assistance.
Meeting Seluvis in Seluvis’s Rise will prompt him to ask you to find Nepheli and give her a potion. Accepting this task will award you with Seluvis’s Potion. Next, we can talk to Iji, located at the Road to the Manor grace point. When the menu pops up, select the ‘About Nokron’ option to get information regarding the whereabouts of this underground city. Inquiring ‘About Blaidd’ will give you insight into the history of Ranni and her companions, as Iji and Blaidd swore allegiance to Ranni as vassals when she began her new journey.
If you haven’t already found the Siofra River Well, a long, gorgeous elevator that takes you all the way down below the surface, you will want to start at the Mistwood Outskirts grace point. Head right towards the coast, but travel a little South. Avoid the giant bears scratching the trees, and eventually, you will find what looks to be a dome. Enter this building, and step on the elevator to travel down.
Once you reach the bottom of this elevator, continue North through the large building. I usually hop on horseback here, so I don’t have to deal with many enemies inside. Once you have made it through this building, you will see a building door to the right and an elevator inside. After going up the elevator, you will still be in the Siofra River area, just elevated a little. Again, use your horse to travel east up the hill and continue East until you reach a pillar sticking out of the ground.
These pillars contain torches, and you will have to light a certain amount of these torches to unlock the Ancestor Spirit boss fight. Just light this torch and head towards the building with the large stairway to the South. On this first pillar, before the stairs on the right, you can find the map of the Siofra river, which you should pick up. Please do not go up the stairs but continue past them towards the East. You will want to stay directly East when traveling, as it seemingly takes you in a straight line to Blaidd. He can be found at the edge of a cliff, and talking with him reveals he thinks Seluvis knows something he is not telling us about Nokron. He suggests we visit him, so we will be sure to do that.
You will want to travel back to Seluvis’s Rise, below Ranni’s Rise, outside Caria Manor. Approach Seluvis, and ask him about Nokron. He will eventually tell us about a glintstone sorcerer named Sellen in Limgrave, who owes Seluvis a favor for his assistance when she was expelled from the Academy. He will give us a letter of introduction, called Seluvis’s Introduction, and tells us to ‘go ask her.’
This quest involves chasing people around looking for information, so bear with me. We are going to want to head to the Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave. There will be a few enemies here, most notably the Mad Pumpkin Head, that you will need to take out before talking to Sellen. She resides in the downstairs cellar, and talking to her will reveal the option to ‘Show letter of introduction.’ Doing this will trigger a surprising response from Sellen, as she claims she was hoping never to have to hear the name Seluvis again. She obliges, however, and agrees to teach you what she knows.
She reveals that to fulfill Ranni’s destiny, General Rhadan must be killed. This is because he managed to take hold of the stars to master gravity magic and continue riding his horse. This, however, stopped the star’s cycles, which blocks both blocks off Nokron, Eternal City, and prevents Ranni from finishing her journey.
It is time to reveal what we know to our friend Blaidd, who is still down in the Siofra River. He will be in the same spot, so refer to step 3 if you need to locate him again. When talking to him, the option to ‘Tell Sellen’s story’ appears, and doing this will remind Blaidd of something he heard of on the southern edge of Caelid, which we know to be Redmane Castle. He brings up the fact that there is a festival, and you can challenge Rhadan yourself. He insists that we both meet at Redmane Castle to participate in this festival, so that will be our next step.
To progress this quest, we will need to kill the General himself. Redmane Castle can be found at the bottom-right of the map in Caelid, and inside holds one of my favorite introductions to a boss. When you get to the Impassable Greatbridge, there should be a teleporter to the left of the bridge, which will take you inside the castle. Head up the stairs and enter the room on the right to get a grace point. Traveling up the stairs further will take us to what I call the lobby, where all the participants are eagerly waiting.
When you enter the castle, depending on how far you are in the game, you may have to fight both a Misbegotten Warrior and a Crucible Knight simultaneously. These two don’t complement each other in battle, unlike how Ornstein and Smough were designed. This fight is not insanely brutal, but it feels like an unnecessary boss battle, in my opinion.
If you do not have to do this battle yet, be prepared for it later.
Entering this lobby, you will find many familiar faces, such as Blaidd, Iron Fist Alexander, Lionel the Lionhearted, and many more. I feel like our player is closest with Blaidd at this point, so I usually talk to him. But, most importantly, you want to speak to the man standing on the platform above, who yelled ‘Champions, welcome!’ as you entered. He will ask you if you are ready to begin the festival, which will trigger the event, and allow you to access the boss fight.
After beating Rhadan, you will be awarded a phenomenal cutscene showing a meteor shower traveling across the screen. This is great for us because that meteor shower will open up the entrance to Nokron, Eternal City, and now we have to find where the meteor crashed. Talking to Blaidd before we leave, he will congratulate us on the victory and tell us to meet him in Nokron now that it is open.
It is time to get the treasure Ranni is desperately seeking, so travel to the Mistwood Outskirts, and head towards the Mistwood Ruins. In this area, we can find a note from Blaidd, saying that he dealt with a traitor and that we should lead into Nokron. Continue South past the Ruins until you see rocks and debris floating in the air. This is the entrance to the city, so carefully scale down the rocks until you reach the bottom.
You will see a small doorway in front of you, so head into this area and roll down the broken layers of the floor until you reach the bottom. You can run through what appears to be a window and now see the beautiful city of Nokron. You will need to traverse the rooftops to find your first site of grace, so head right and down the skinny pillars. From here, you can see a building that has been toppled over, and you will need to scale up this building and jump to the next roof.
From here, continue scaling the left side of the rooftops until you reach an open window on the left. Jump into this room and carefully scale down to the levels below you, ensuring not to take too much fall damage. Two enemies will not be much of a threat here, so run past them and head through the doorway and down the stairs to the grace point. After this, you must go to the Mimic Tear boss battle. An easy way to cheese this fight is to unequip all of your weapons /armor/talismans before you enter the arena, and once you pass the fog, reequip all these items. This will leave your adversary mimic defenseless and can only punch you for minimal damage. This fight is not difficult to handle regularly, so keep that in mind.
After defeating the Mimic Tear boss, head left up the stairs and down the long path. After crossing most of the bridge, there will be an area where you can drop back onto land and a path streaming up North. Head down this way, but go West instead of following the path. This will take you past a few enemies, and right to another grace point tucked away to the left.
From this grace, traverse the buildings until you reach the Night’s Sacred Ground. Looking South, you will see a dome-like roof leading to two mimic tears. Jump on the dome and down to the level with the mimics and quickly take them out. After fighting them, cut left and travel across the buildings until you reach a partially broken bridge. Here, cross the bridge and hop into the building on the other side.
Drop down to the lowest level of the building, and beware of the few enemies down there, including a giant heat-seeking cannonball. Take them out, then head South outside of the building. You will be able to see a site of grace to the left, so interact with it and handle whatever you need to address now. Now just run past all the mimic tears on the ground until you find a small building with a teleporter next to it. The chest inside this building contains the Treasure of Nokron, also known as the Fingerslayer Blade, and a Great Ghost Glovewort.
With our newfound treasure, we can now deliver it back to Ranni in her Rise. Head to the top and speak to her. She is very thankful for all your sacrifices and commitment and lets you know how important this was to her journey. Talking to her again will have her give you the Carian Inverted Statue, which we will need for later.
The statue given to us by Ranni will immediately be put to use, and we have to travel back to the Carnian Study Hall. This area is located in Liurnia of the Lakes, attached to the Divine Tower of Liurnia. Once inside this area, we will notice a table that, when approached, will prompt us with the option to ‘Examine pedestal.’ This will trigger a cutscene of us placing the statue, immediately followed by shaking and the rotation of the moon on the table. This signifies that the whole area was flipped on its head, allowing us to explore it in a new way.
You will want to traverse the beams and areas above, all the way down until you reach an elevator. This elevator will take us down to the bottom, or top, of the inverted area, and once we get to the bottom, we want to head to the East, where there is a door we need to open.
This doorway opens up to a grace point and a long bridge, reminiscent of the Divine Tower we visited in Limgrave. This is the Divine Tower of Liurnia, and we will want to open the large doors in front of us and head up the elevator to the top levels. There will be a grace point for you right when you get off the elevator, so interact with it and head up the stairs to the right. At the top, we can pick up both the Cursemark of Death and the Stargazer Heirloom.
Renna’s Rise is in the same area as Ranni’s Rise, and we must travel there to use a teleporter. This will teleport you to Ainsel River Main, where you will want to grab the miniature Ranni doll and interact with the grace point in front of you. This teleporter is located at the top of Renna’s Rise, so scale your way up all the stairs and interact with it. When resting, you will see an option to talk to the miniature Ranni Doll. Select this option three times, and the doll will finally speak to you.
She is not too pleased that we recognized her in her disguise, and to pay her back, she tells us to kill the Baleful Shadows. From the grace point, we were just at, head South through the Lake. You will see a giant door with a few torches, so head through that and down the long tunnel down to the bottom levels. When you reach a divide, stick to the right side and continue. There will be a door on the left side of the building in front of you, the entrance to the city of Nokstella.
There will be a grace point soon after you enter the city, so interact with it when you reach it. You will need to do a lot of exploring to traverse your way through this city finally. Eventually, after two trips down some elevators guarded by enemies riding ants, you will finally come across our next grace point. From here, continue down the skinny tunnel to the South and kill or ignore the toads that inflict Death Blight. You will eventually enter an arena with a red-orange filling the air, and here you fight the Baleful Shadow. This is the Shadow of Blaidd, which is confusing initially because that is seemingly our closest ally besides Ranni. After defeating this boss, Ranni will talk to us, saying;
“Now, I can finally stand before them. This is farewell, my dear. Tell Blaidd, and Iji…I love them.”
After this quote, you will be given the discarded Palace Key, allowing you to continue your journey.
After killing the Baleful Shadow, use the elevator in this room to travel down to the Lake of Rot. There will be a grace point right in front of the Lake, so be sure to grab that before venturing out. You must cross the Lake and jump on small platforms to create a path. If approached incorrectly, this is a very obnoxious part of the game, so be sure to equip a weapon with the Quickstep or Bloodhounds Quickstep Ash of War. This will make traveling across the Lake a breeze, and coupled with a Starlight Shard, you will take minimal exposure to the Scarlet Rot.
You will know you are close to the end of the Lake when you see a giant entryway in the distance with two large torches sticking out of the statues. Head over there, use Preserving Boluses, and heal if needed. Head into the entryway to find a grace point, and interact with it immediately. Heading West, we need to traverse down the building until you are at a safe distance to land without dying. Once on ground level, continue on the path towards the entryway, but go left instead of up the stairs. Here, we can interact with a coffin that will take us right to Astel’s arena. Best of luck!
After defeating Astel, you will notice that the pathway to continue further is blocked. We will need to travel back to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library to open the chest that has been sealed all game before this. Opening this chest with the Discarded Palace Key we picked up earlier will give us the Dark Moon Ring. Putting this ring on will now open the previously blocked-off area after the Astel fight.
This area comes after the Astel fight, so after opening the blocked site with the Dark Moon Ring, continue onward. Ride the elevator upwards until you reach the Moonlight Altar area, where you can now freely ride your Torrent. Grab the grace point a little way in front of the elevator, and continue up the hill to the North leading to the Cathedral, but be warned as a dragon known as Glintstone Dragon Adula will spawn as soon as you arrive. I ride past this Dragon into the Cathedral to grab the grace point behind it.
There will be a hole that you can traverse down and travel through the tunnels until you reach Ranni, sitting on a bench in an empty room. As you approach her, you will be given the option to ‘Wear Ring,’ which will trigger a cutscene. In this cutscene, we put the Dark Moon Ring on Ranni’s finger, and after the cutscene, the ghost version of Ranni will appear. You are now Ranni’s lord and have unlocked the ability to summon her for the Age of Stars Ending. We aren’t done just yet, as some significant aspects of the quest are still left. As the conversation ends, Ranni will fade away, and she will leave behind the Dark Moon Greatsword, which is a weapon that any Souls veteran will have fond memories of.
Head back to Ranni’s Rise, but be sure to proceed with caution. Blaidd will be waiting for you on the steps, and just like our buddy Solaire, we will have to fight someone who was once our greatest ally. Defeating him will have him drop the Royal Greatsword and his armor set. There is nothing you can do to stop Blaidd, as the Fingers got too deep into his head, and he is itching for this battle.
We need to finally travel back to the Road to Manor site of grace, where we are tasked with informing Iji about the fate of Blaidd. It is not a fun conversation, and we can feel the pain in Iji’s words, as he feels that he let down Blaidd in the end. He ends the conversation with these words;
“I’ll catch up with you soon enough, Blaidd. When I do, I only hope you’ll accept my apology.”
That was the entirety of the Ranni questline, and it is easily one of my favorites in Elden Ring. I enjoy how intricate each step is, the research into finding each area, and the new clues we see on this journey. While it may be confusing, the stages make sense when viewed as a story.
Ranni’s Ending: The Age of Stars
All of that work that you put in is about to pay off. After you have battled Radagon of the Golden Order and the Elden Beast, and have emerged victorious, you will make your way back to the stone platform you fought Radagon on. Walk towards his corpse in the middle of the arena, and on the ground you will see a blue summon sign. This is Ranni, and summoning her in will allow you to complete the quest, and achieve the Age of Stars ending.
Many will consider this ending to be the most satisfying, or ‘best’ ending in Elden Ring. There are many options to choose from, and my personal favorite would be the Lord of the Frenzied Flame ending, where you team up with the Three Fingers. If you would like to see a full list of all the endings in detail, check out our Elden Ring All Endings Explained guide . I can agree, however, that this cutscene seems to be the most rewarding.
As Ranni is summoned in, she slowly approaches the corpse of Radagon. She picks up his decapitated head, and holds it up in the air, saying;
“ I do solemnly swear. To every living being, and every living soul. Now cometh the age of the stars. A thousand year voyage under the wisdom of the moon. Here begginith the chill night that encompasses all, reaching the great beyond. Into fear, doubt, loneliness…As the path stretches into darkness.”
As she is saying this, she is conjuring up the moon, which is definitely a sight to behold. The colors are bright and visually pleasing, and Ranni’s voice and words bring feelings of comfort, hope, and promise as you take in what just happened. You just fulfilled your duty to Ranni, and you and her will hopefully bring this world the peace it deserves.
As Ranni finishes the spawning of the moon, she turns and walks towards you. She looks at you, and as the camera pans down, we see she is extending her two right hands, asking us to join her in this journey. The cutscene ends with Ranni beckoning us to follow her, saying;
“Well then. Shall we? My fair consort, eternal.”
Answer: Ranni’s hat can be found in a chest in Renna’s Rise, so if you missed it initially, go back and check!
Question: Is this quest worth it if I’m not a sorcerer?
Answer: Yes, this quest is very much worth it for all people. You will already kill some bosses that overlap, like Rhadan, but you also get to fight some optional but fun bosses and enemies.
Answer: Sadly, I haven’t found a way to save our buddy. His fate is unavoidable when doing this quest, so just think of it as you doing him a service.
