After Viral Success, Will Travel Oregon's Animated Videos Be Spirited Away?
If you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli movies like “My Neighbor Tortoro” or “Kikki’s Delivery Service”, then Travel Oregon’s recent tourism videos have likely intrigued you. But they may be coming to an end.
Started in 2018, the so-called “Only Slightly Exaggerated” marketing campaign has replicated the animation style of the Japanese entertainment company. Familiar Oregon landmarks such as Crater Lake and Haystack Rock are paired with mystical creatures or events.
Todd Davidson is CEO of Travel Oregon, which commissioned the campaign with Psyop and Sun Creatures Studio. He says the response to the two videos so far has put Oregon on the world stage.
“I did a Skype interview with television stations in Japan, we did a radio interview with stations in London, we did an organic post of the video itself, in China," he tells KLCC.
"Five million views within just a few weeks.”
It’s unknown whether the Ghibli-esque campaign will continue with a third video. A Travel Oregon coordinator says they’ll figure out tourism marketing later this fall.

Another Oregon RV road trip we recommend for those in search of jaw-dropping scenery is the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. Our route started in La Grande and swung northeast on OR-82 through Wallowa, Enterprise and Joseph. The Wallowas are a wonder, surprising us with shining lakes, rugged peaks and wild rivers flowing through grassy valleys.
