11 best excursions + day trips in Lanzarote (our reviews)
by Claire ROBINSON , Region Lovers | November 18, 2023 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission (read more)
Visiting Lanzarote means discovering a variety of landscapes: volcanoes, caves, lagoons, cliffs, beaches… And you don’t always have to take your car. See our selection of the best excursions in Lanzarote to admire the different landscapes, have fun, go off-road or hop over to Fuerteventura. This guide also includes some of the best boat excursions in Lanzarote to discover the island from another point of view.
This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Lanzarote’s most beautiful excursions – quick answers
If you don’t want to read everything, we recommend these 4 excursions to see the best of Lanzarote:
- Admire the landscapes of Timanfaya National Park and a best-of of the island – see program and availability
- Dolphin cruise – see our preferred option
- Discover the works of César Manrique, including the caves – see program and availability
- A day trip to the island of La Graciosa – see bus + ferry option
Most excursions can take you to the 3 main areas of Lanzarote: Playa Blanca, Playa del Carmen and Costa Teguise. But be sure to check first.
1. Excursion to Timanfaya only
Timanfaya National Park is the best excursion in Lanzarote. It’s absolutely breathtaking! It’s a national park and you can’t walk around on your own. But even in a group, it’s fantastic to see the colors and power of the Earth.
Timanfaya National Park is located on the west coast of the island and consists entirely of volcanic soil. Access is limited, with just one road and a bus to take you out to see the scenery.
This route offers fantastic panoramas of the many volcanic craters (formed mainly between 1730 and 1736), different types of lava and incredible colors. It’s a much-visited attraction, but it’s well done and well worth the effort.
If you don’t want to rent a car, there are excursions from all the resorts (Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise) and the cruise terminal.
- A half-day which covers only the journey to Timanfaya, the fire experience at the restaurant and the park tour by bus – See program and availability
Tip: We recommend sitting on the right-hand side of the bus when taking the Timanfaya bus. There are beautiful things to see on both sides, but some of the best views will be to your right.
2. A little of everything in Lanzarote – day trip
You can also combine the park with other attractions over a full day. This way, you can discover more of Lanzarote’s beauty. We particularly like the option that adds the green lagoon, César Manrique’s Jameos del Agua cave and the Geria vineyard.
See program and availability
Here are the other locations in addition to Timanfaya:
Here, at Charco de los Clicos , the combination is exceptional: a green lagoon, the remains of the volcano with red, yellow and black rocks, and the black sand beach. The volcanic crater was formed during eruptions in the 1730s and flooded by the ocean. With erosion, only half the cone remains.
Yes, there are vineyards on Lanzarote. It’s quite amazing, but by using picon on the soil to capture moisture and creating small rock walls to protect from the wind, they are able to grow grapes and make wine! You’ll visit the most famous bodega: La Geria, with its impressive valley.
We think it was one of the most frustrating things about Lanzarote. This pool in Jameos des Agua is so inviting!!!! Isn’t it? Here, César Manrique transformed part of a long lava tunnel that had collapsed in several places. There’s an underground lake, restaurants and an amphitheatre…

WHERE TO STAY IN Lanzarote
Option 1: Playa Blanca
To the south, the resort is charming with beautiful beaches. We recommend..:
- Hotel Resort Princesa Yaiza, right in the center – see prices, pictures and availability
- Boutique-Hotel Cala Lanzarote – see prices, pictures and availability
- Aparthotel Jardines del Sol – prices, pictures and availability
Option 2: Puerto del Carmen
Main seaside resort with large beaches. We recommend..:
- Hotel Fariones, 5 stars above the beach – see prices, photos and availability
- Boutique-Hotel Aqua Suites – see prices, pictures and availability
- Hotel Seaside Los Jameos, for families – see prices, photos and availability
Option 3: Costa Teguise
Smaller and more central, for exploring the whole island. We recommend..:
- Barcelo adults-only Hotel – prices, pictures and availability
- Radisson Blu resort hotel, adults-only- see prices, pictures and availability
- H10 Lanzarote Family Guard – see prices, photos and availability
3. Dolphin-watching boat trip
We love the whale and dolphin watching tours. We had high hopes, and were lucky enough to see an impressive number of dolphins. A wonderful experience with the Lanzarote landscape in the background. You can also often see bottlenose dolphins in the Canary Islands, including Lanzarote. See our article .
Choose from 4 tour formats:
Option 1 – Daytime speedboat – duration 1h30 with swimming See details and availability Option 2 – sunset speedboat – 2h30 with champagne See details and availability Option 3 – fast boat and Lobos Island – 5h with discovery of part of Lobos Island See details and availability Option 4 – Catamaran sunset cruise – 2h See details and availability There are resident dolphins all year round. Some say that June is the best month to see many of them, but we haven’t found confirmation.
4. Tour of César Manrique’s works
César Manrique left an indelible mark on Lanzarote thanks to his commitment to respecting the environment and integrating himself into it. His works on the island are surprising, combining the work of nature with discreet, curving architecture that blends with the rock.
It’s not possible to visit all the places linked to the artist in a single day. But you can discover some of it. We recommend this excursion: see program and availability .
It covers a good variety of locations:
- Monumento al Campesino highlights local culture
- The César Manrique Foundation
- Mirador del Rio, hidden in the cliffs with breathtaking views
- The Cactus Garden, a must-see
- Jameos de Lagua, in a lava tube with lake and pool
Book the tour .
OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- A small car is all you need.
- But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
- There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .
Read our tips
5. Excursion to the island of La Graciosa
La Graciosa is a small island to the north of Lanzarote. Access is by ferry and there are no roads at all, just tracks in the sand. You can explore it on foot or with one of the 4WD cabs. Unlike Lanzarote, it is covered in golden-white sand. But there are also a few volcanoes. The colors are magnificent and you can enjoy different landscapes: beaches, volcanoes and basalt columns. Even the ferry crossing is fascinating, with superb views of the Famara cliffs to the north of Lanzarote. See our article .
We recommend taking the first ferry in the morning to avoid the crowds who come to spend the day at the beach. Ferries depart from Orzola. Note that for those staying in Playa Blanca, it takes longer to get to the north (1h10min by car). 2 companies offer ferries from Lanzarote to La Graciosa. See departures and book or book with bus pick-up . And on site, we recommend hiring a 4WD cab to explore the island’s most beautiful landscapes: book your 4WD tour in advance!
Another option if you don’t rent a car is to take part in a day’s sailing on a catamaran around La Graciosa – see program .
6. Volcano hiking
The best way to discover Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes is by hiking. The island offers a wide choice of hikes of varying lengths and difficulty. See our favorite hikes .
If you don’t want to hike alone, you can join a group. Here’s a small-group option around Timanfaya: see program and availability Or head north to the La Corona volcano and its impressive views: see program and availability .
WITH OUR GUIDE PLAN YOUR DREAM TRIP TO lanzarote
All the information you need for your trip:
- 7 maps that make planning easier
- + 75 pre-selected locations

- + 140 photos to help you choose
7. Immerse yourself in the world of Lanzarote wine
If Lanzarote’s vineyards fascinate you, given the island’s extreme climatic conditions, you can combine a hike, a vineyard tour and a wine tasting! Find out more about Lanzarote wine in our article .
This tour takes you to La Géria bodega, the island’s most famous. You can hike in the valley surrounded by vineyards protected by low walls. The views are exceptional! And you can enjoy one of the island’s most famous white wines to reward yourself after the effort!
8. Alternative excursions
You can also go off the beaten track to discover Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes from a different angle. Depending on your sporting or mechanical desires, you can go exploring:
- by eBike – see program and availability
- by buggy – see program and availability
9. Excursion to Fuerteventura and the Corralejo dunes
Another classic is to set aside a day to discover the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. It’s so close and yet so different. The landscapes are more mountainous and less volcanic. It has better beaches but not the same charm as Lanzarote, in our opinion. The island is large, so you’ll only be able to discover the north. But you’ll spend some time in the sand dunes of Corralejo . And we love it! It’s an opportunity to discover another side of the Canary Islands.
10. Excursion to Fuerteventura and the island of Lobos
But if you want to keep with the volcanic theme, you can also book a fairly free excursion that takes you to spend some time on the beautiful little island of Lobos and also to the town of Corralejo on Fuerteventura. Lobos Island is one of our favorite spots in the Canaries. It’s like entering another world.
11. Catamaran to Papagayo beaches
Lanzarote’s southwest coast is a must-see. Papagayo and its neighboring golden sandy beaches are considered to be the best on Lanzarote and are one of the island’s main attractions. Their vast sandy expanses have remained largely untouched, with no paved roads leading to them. These beaches are located on the Macizo de los Ajaches (Natural Monument), the island’s oldest territory, formed around 14 million years ago (hence the rounded peaks and deep ravines).
You can explore it on foot, or via an unpaved track. Or you can take a boat out to sea and admire the wilderness. Just be aware that you won’t be able to get to the beaches from the boats.
From Puerto del Carmen: Catamarans allow you to explore the entire south coast and perhaps catch a glimpse of dolphins. You can swim or kayak around the boat. See program and availability
From Playa Blanca: You’ll discover these magnificent landscapes on a yacht. You can swim and stand-up paddle around the boat. See program and availability

Lanzarote travel guide: a sea-swept volcanic paradise
Even a short exploration quickly shows the out-of-this-world island is undeserving of its 'Brits abroad' reputation
- Newsletter sign up Newsletter
Situated off the west coast of Africa, Lanzarote is a striking island that is perhaps more like being on Mars than anywhere on Earth. Vistas are expansive with mountainous crags, reddish, dusty dunes, and the occasional radio tower jutting from one of the peaks.
The island's geology is fascinating. It's also small enough that you can see the sea from virtually everywhere – the deep Atlantic blue contrasts with the burnt orange and black of the volcanic rock, and the ebony sand that makes up several of the beaches.
Why you should visit
The summer months are the hottest in Lanzarote, but it's balmy throughout the rest of the year, though there are the occasional rainy days and blustery winds. Playa del Carmen attracts the drinkers, the stag and hen-dos but the rest of the island is your playground. It attracts the sporty types, and is great for cycling, hiking, running, surfing, windsurfing, parasailing and scuba and plenty more.

There are also plenty of fabulous beaches to enjoy. The three sweeping arcs of golden sand and clear waters near Playa Blanca, called Playa Papagayo, are the best of the bunch, and can be accessed via a long, dusty road. There are a couple of restaurants perched on the cliffs for a cold beer and grilled fish.
Timanfaya National Park
The landscape gives rise to a unique viticulture. The wines here are grown in the rich volcanic soil and harvested by hand, and the vines are some of the few in the world that escaped the phylloxera blight. El Toro Asador, a fabulous grill restaurant in the hills outside Playa del Carmen, is a great spot for sampling them. Alongside this, there's an incredible selection of beef from Spain and Portugal – ex-dairy cattle, rich and gamey, cut and grilled to order.
Agriculture is limited here given the hardy ground, strong winds and salty air but you'll find tropical fruits and an array of seafood alongside heartier staples, such as a paella made with pasta instead of rice called fideuà. There are also plenty of chickpea dishes, and arguably the best on the island are served at Bar Stop, a 130-year-old tapas bar in the little town of Yaiza.
What to see
The other thing that grows incredibly well in Lanzarote, and indeed the Canaries in general, will greet you as soon as you exit the airport: giant cacti are everywhere. They're planted in the black volcanic sand, which makes for a dazzling contrast. The Jardín de Cactus (Cactus Garden') is worth a visit. Chances are you'll never see anywhere else like it, with 450 varieties of cacti from around the world planted in a large, tiered amphitheatre that was once used as a quarry for the black rock.
The Jardin de Cactus in Lanzarote, filled with 450 varieties of the species
For the most surreal of experiences on the island, the 'must-do' trip is the volcano tour of Timanfaya, in the national park, which is still active (though its last eruption was in 1730). A coach will take you around a narrow road amid an utterly alien landscape of rust-red dunes, spiky crags and lava frozen mid-flow.
It's worth a trip to the tiny coastal village of Tenesar nearby to take in a sunset. A few white houses lead down to a broad rocky shore which is pounded by the Atlantic waves – a memorable sight. Smashing into the low, black cliffs great, white spikes of foaming water shot some 30 feet into the air.
Where to stay
Looking towards the Atlantic from a Barceló Playa Blanca balcony
The Barceló Hotel Group has a strong presence on the island and for a family vibe, Barceló Playa Blanca is the spot. On the coast by a marina, a short stroll from the restaurants and shops on the pier, the accommodation is arranged in a horseshoe around a lagoon-style pool with tons of sun loungers.
The hotel has all-inclusive packages which make life very easy. There's live entertainment geared towards all ages, a bar that screens sports and a couple of on-site restaurants (Mexican and Japanese). Rooms are comfy and well-sized with balconies looking out to sea.
If you're here for fitness rather than the fiesta, Barceló Active Resort on the edge of Teguise may be more your thing. With a gym, classes, races and an Olympic-sized pool, it'll tick all the athletic boxes. And there's a lovely bay just below the hotel to take a cooling plunge in the sea post-workout.
The pool at Barceló Lanzarote Active
There are several restaurants in the hotel too, including an Italian that does cracking pizza. All-inclusive is your best choice here at 'Royal Tier' level. The buffet is pretty special with generous salads, breads and a grilling station.
Handily, the airport is only a 10-minute drive away, though the planes don't disturb the peace. A short stroll down the coast will bring you to the enclave of Las Caletas and a seaside bar called Casa Tomas – perfect for some sundowners listening to the crashing waves.
How to get here
Travel to and from Lanzarote from the UK takes between four and four-and-a-half hours; we travelled with easyJet from Luton and were guests of Barceló Playa Blanca and Barceló Active.
William Leigh was a guest of Barceló Playa Blanca, from £134 a night on a B&B basis, and Lanzarote Active Resort, from £87 on a B&B basis.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, golf coverage, radio
One week and one big-time event separate players from the second major championship of the season.
An elevated purse, additional FedEx Cup points and one last trophy before the PGA Championship are all up for grabs this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. With 69 of the best players on the PGA Tour and many of those names who aim to factor in a week's time at Valhalla in the field, the Wells Fargo Championship is likely to produce a major championship-type leaderboard on a major championship-type test.
Quail Hollow once again hosts the Wells Fargo Championship as it has done so in the past, including last year when Wyndham Clark broke through for his first career PGA Tour victory. Clark has since transformed into a completely different golfer winning the U.S. Open later that year and has since tacked on this year's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am while consistently contending in these signature events.
While Clark was the top man a year ago, Rory McIlroy has been on that perch over the last decade or so. Three times a winner at Quail Hollow and fresh off his 25th career PGA Tour victory and 35th birthday, the four-time major champion hopes to continue this upward trajectory ahead of his return to Valhalla -- the site of his last major championship triumph in 2014.
McIlroy's drought consists of major championships, but that of Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood and Cameron Young consists of PGA Tour wins. This lot has combined to get shutout over the last two years and will hope to breakthrough for a much-needed title in Charlotte.
Masters contenders Collin Morikawa and Max Homa plan to tee it up while Hideki Matsuyama and Viktor Hovland round out the action at Quail Hollow.

Taylor swift's so high school choreography on the eras tour had so many travis kelce and football references, share this article.
The new set list from Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour premiered on Thursday , with the first of four shows in Paris, and as expected, we heard some Tortured Poets Department songs .
One of them was So High School , the song that’s clearly about Travis Kelce . And as some fans noted, the choreography, set and lighting made it clear who and what the song was about. There were football lights! There were references to Kelce touchdown dances and Swag Surfin’! She and her dancers did it all from what looked like bleachers!
Check out the fan videos out and you’ll see for yourself:

How Blades Brown, 16, rallied to make the cut in PGA Tour debut at Myrtle Beach Classic
Blades Brown refused to let his PGA Tour debut end after 36 holes.
The 16-year-old Brentwood Academy sophomore caught fire to make the cut at the Myrtle Beach Classic, shooting a 4-under 67 in Friday's second round to qualify for the weekend.
Brown made five birdies in all and closed with four in his final nine holes. That included back-to-back birdies on holes No. 6 and 7, part of his back nine after he teed off on No. 10 to start the day. He recorded just one bogey after making six in his 1-over 72 opening round Thursday .
"A wise man once told me that the tournament starts on the back nine on Sunday, and for me, I know today is not Sunday, but . . . that was the Sunday back nine for me," Brown said. "I just said, 'OK, whatever happens, happens.' "
Brown is 3-under 139 for the tournament and tied for 48th, up 41 spots from the first round. There were 70 players who made the cut, which was at 2-under. Chris Gotterup leads at 12-under.
Brown received a sponsor exemption to play in Myrtle Beach this week while the PGA Tour’s main event, the Wells Fargo Championship, is being played in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the top-ranked golfer in the Class of 2026, No. 4 in the AJGA rankings and No. 176 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
He became the second consecutive 16-year-old to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sponsored event. England’s Kris Kim , 16, did so at last week's CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Miles Russell, 15, tied for 20th at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Lecom Suncoast Classic last month.
Brown got some motivation to start the day from his mom, Rhonda Blades Brown, a former Vanderbilt women's basketball player and WNBA New York Liberty star.
"I was like, OK, I can either make the cut or do homework tomorrow and feel bad about myself. My mom was kind of throwing that at me this morning, and I was like, all right, Mom," Brown said. "It definitely feels surreal. After I made that putt on 9, that little 2-inch putt, I was like, yes, I can go chill by the beach."
Brown began his back nine one shot below the cut line after a bogey on his ninth hole, but birdied two of his next three holes. He ranks 14th in the field with 10 birdies in two rounds.
He finished Friday above multiple past PGA Tour winners, including former Vanderbilt and Montgomery Bell Academy star Brandt Snedeker (5-over), Aaron Baddeley (1-under), Ryan Moore (1-under), Bill Haas (1-under) and Kevin Kisner (even).
More: How 16-year-old phenom Blades Brown may be among best golfers in Tennessee history
"Yesterday was my first time ever playing a PGA Tour event, so I was a little nerve-wracked the whole day," Brown said. "Today I felt a lot better. Today I felt like I was playing golf that I know how to play."
His exemption at Myrtle Beach stems from his record-breaking performance in last summer’s U.S. Amateur, the nation’s premier amateur championship. He broke Bobby Jones’ record as the youngest medalist in U.S. Amateur history, tying for first place in the tournament's stroke play portion. Brown was eliminated in the match play portion in the round of 32 but earned recognition as one of the nation's top rising stars.
He became a client of Sportfive sports marketing agency and now has NIL deals with Callaway and New Jersey-based Transcend Capital Advisors.
Brown has been on the radar in Tennessee for some time. He has won three consecutive TSSAA Division II-AA individual titles and last season set the Tennessee Junior Amateur Championship record for the lowest score in tournament history, finishing 22-under in 54 holes.
In 2023, he was the first to win Tennessee Boys’ Junior and Men’s Player of the Year honors in the same year.
