Since both mines have an enormous 255 floors, finding the most valuable ore and gems is no easy task. We take a look at what you need to know about mine exploration and how to quickly get to the levels you need.

Updated on June 28, 2023, by Branden Lizardi: It's about to be easier than ever to give Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town a try. The popular slice-of-life farming sim game is coming to Xbox Game Pass. Being a few years old now, we're revisiting all of our content on the game, ensuring that everything stays up to date on our current style and formatting standards. It never hurts to double check our information, too. Best of luck in the mines, farmer!

How The Mines Work

Going into the mine, you'll need a hammer to break the rocks and a hoe to dig the floor . You could also take a stack of food, but you may prefer to save your bag space for ore.

The Spring Mine is available for mining all year round, but the Lake Mine is only accessible during the Winter. Both mines work the same way, with each level containing a variety of rocks and a ladder for access up and down .

The ladder's location will be random but does follow certain rules. It will never spawn in the eight blocks immediately surrounding the ladder you came down or spawn on any of the blocks directly next to the wall .

The ladder hits the floor just behind Claire. The exit will not spawn in any of the spots marked with a red cross that surround the location of the entry ladder, nor will it spawn down any edge.

How Pitfalls Work

After descending enough, you'll encounter pitfalls. These are holes in the floor that, when walked over, will drop you down multiple levels at once . Doing so reduces stamina, so watch out. They are hidden, so to avoid falling down a pit when on the floor you need, dig with the hoe to uncover them .

How To Do The Save Game Trick For The Mines

Every time you reach a new floor, save the game. Once you've found the ladder, remember its location and reload the save from when you first entered that level . You can now go straight to the ladder, meaning a quicker descent with less wasted stamina. Repeat this process until you hit the desired level.

How To Unlock The Elevator

After gifting 100 items to the Harvest Goddess , she will reward you with the Elevator. This will appear as an electrical panel next to the entrance of both mines.

For every 50 levels you reach, you can use the Elevator to jump to that depth from the entrance. The options are 50, 100, 150, 200, and 225, respectively. You must have reached that level before it becomes available on the Elevator.

The Spring Mine Rewards

The main resource found in the Spring Mine is ore. From Junk to Mythic Ore, these primarily operate as the needed crafting material to upgrade your tools. There is, however, a selection of rare items that can be found hidden on the various levels of the mine.

Gemstones and Ores

These materials are found throughout most levels and are needed for upgrades and maker production.

Saibara uses orichalcum to make jewelry at the cost of 1000G, while Adamantite is used to produce Makers , machines that will transform your raw farming materials like milk and eggs into more valuable products like cheese and mayonnaise. Mythic Ore is used to upgrade your Mithril tools to the highest possible level.

Power Berry

Power Berries will increase your maximum stamina. While there are a handful of ways to get them , there's also one hiding in the Spring Mine on level 100. Dig around with the hoe until it's uncovered.

The Harvest Sprite And Goddess Statues

Two decorative statues are hiding in the dirt on certain floors of the Spring Mine. Dig around with the hoe until you find them. After which, they do not reappear . They can be placed on your shelf at home, but do nothing else outside of that.

Goddess Jewels

There are nine blue orbs hidden on certain floors of the Spring Mine. These are the Goddess Jewels. Collecting all nine will reward you with the Gem of the Goddess , a tool item that regenerates Stamina naturally over time.

Wielding the Gem of the Goddess stacks on top of the Spa stamina regeneration , meaning it'll take half as long to fully restore your stamina this way.

Tomatosetta Stone

A quirky reference to the stone of all language, the Rosetta Stone, this hidden item is found by digging into the earth on the bottom floor (255) of the Spring Mine . Finding it will teach you the cooking recipe for Ketchup, after which it can be sold to Huang for as much as 77,000 gold .

Travel Stone

The rarest and most valuable item found in the Spring Mine, the Travel Stone enables fast travel via the game map. Found within the rocks on the bottom floor (255), it will only appear after reaching Year 3 . Crush rocks with the hammer until you find it.

The Lake Mine Rewards

The Lake Mine is only accessible during winter when the lake freezes over, but it contains far more valuable ores and gems . It mostly comprises different types of gems that can be made into jewelry or sold. Like the Spring Mine, this mine also

You can access the Lake Mine year-round by using the Travel Stone to teleport to the mine entrance.

Gemstones and Ore

The main draw of the Lake Mine, these gemstones are found on sporadic levels in the Mines. Their primary use is to sell for money or gifted.

While less convenient to get a hold of, Alexandrite is needed to fully complete the shipping list , which is required for marrying the Harvest Goddess .

To make the most money, focus on floors containing Pink diamonds . While very rare, they sell for 10,000g each. Alexandrite sells for the same price, but you will only ever find one at a time (if even that)

Like before, this mine is hiding a Power Berry. It's not as deep down, though. You can find it by digging in the dirt on Floor 19.

Fishing Pond

On Floor 9 is a tunnel that leads to an underground pond. Fishing here with a Blessed or Mythic fishing rod will allow you to catch the Coelacanth , one of the special Legendary Fish.

The Kappa Statue

This mine also contains a statue. Just one, though. The Kappa statue can be found by digging on any Floor between 100 and 120 .

Kappa Jewels

Collecting all the Goddess Jewels rewards you with an item that regenerates stamina. In parallel, Finding all of the Kappa Jewels in the Lake Mine will reward you with the Kappa Treasure, which regenerates fatigue . One is found on each floor.

Cursed Tools

The Lake Mine also contains cursed tools, which are needed to mine Mythic Stone once blessed. Avoid equipping these tools while they are cursed. You will not be able to remove them on your own. Blessing and removing them is done by the priest. Each tool can be found on the following levels.

Tips For The Mines

Lastly, here are some general tips and tricks to make your time in the mines a little easier.

  • Curry Udon is a very affordable way to stock up on food . Both recipes are learned from the Cooking Channel and only require flour and curry powder to make. Each bowl restores 60 stamina.
  • Your Inventory WILL fill up . Keep it as empty as you can before entering, and be prepared to drop the least valuable items to make room, especially if you're looking for specific items.
  • Save before the room you need , as well as once you get there. If it's a rare item that doesn't appear, you can reload the save before that room and try again.

Good luck in the Mines, farmer!

Special Jewels and Treasures

travel stone friends of mineral town

Throughout the game you may come across special Goddess jewels, Kappa jewels, and Truth jewels. These balls cannot be shipped or given as gifts to the villagers. You can either carry them around in the item section of your rucksack, or put them away inside the farm house item cabinet. The jewels are hidden around Mineral Town and within the rocks found on specific floors of the Spring Mine and Lake Mine.

There are 9 of each type of jewel. Once you collect all 9, the jewels can be exchanged for a Gem that can be used as a tool to help you with your stamina and fatigue . For the Goddess jewels and Kappa jewels, the exchange will happen automatically when you collect the 9th jewel. For the Truth jewels, Mayor Thomas will exchange them for the Truth Gem. All the jewels do not need to be in the item section of your rucksack for the exchange to take place, but you DO need to have an empty slot in the tool section to receive the final treasure (as it is a tool and not an item). If you are having a difficult time getting the last jewel to appear, make sure that you have an available tool slot.

The game will NOT keep track of the jewels you have found. Please write down where you have found an jewel after you collect it, especially with the Goddess and Kappa jewels that are hidden on specific floors of the mines. It's not fun trying to remember whether you've found an jewel on a certain floor during a prior exploration of the mine, as the jewels are indistinguishable from one another.

To use the power of the full-powered gem, select it to be the active tool from the Tool Ring. The gem will then activate to your benefit. The Goddess Gem and Kappa Gem are not difficult for players to obtain. The Truth Gem requires at least 50 in-game years to unlock.

After you find the last Goddess/Kappa Jewel and receive the treasure, you must sleep for the night before other Goddess/Kappa Jewels will appear. For example, after you locate the ninth Goddess Jewel and receive the Goddess Treasure, you must go to bed for the day before the Kappa Jewels will start to appear from rocks in the Lake Mine again.

Another note: when locating the last jewel you need for the treasure, you must have an empty slot in the Tool section of your rucksack . The treasure will appear after you've located the last jewel. If there is no room in your tool bag for the treasure to go, the game won't let you locate the last jewel.

Goddess Jewels and Treasure

travel stone friends of mineral town

The 9 Goddess Jewels can be found hidden in the rocks on certain floors of the Spring mine:

  • Floors 60, 102, 123, 152, 155, 171, 190, 202, and 222

The chance that a Goddess Jewel will appear on the floor will be triggered at the point you enter the floor. The jewel is not 100% guaranteed to appear on its floor; there is a chance that the jewel won't pop out as you smash the rocks on the jewel's designated floor. While jewel hunting, use the two-save-slot technique. Save the game before going down the ladder to the floor where the jewel can be found, then save on a second save slot in case you need to reload because you fell down a pitfall hole while smashing the rocks to try and find the jewel. It's also handy to save on slot #2 every so often as you clear the rocks on the floor, so you don't have to remember where you last left off in your search if you do fall down a pitfall and have to utilize your second save slot.

The Goddess Jewels pop out of the rocks fairly easily. There may be only a few instances where a room has to be reset because the jewel didn't appear.

If the item section of your rucksack is full when an jewel pops out of the rocks, the jewel will rest on the ground until you've cleared space in your bag.

After you collect all 9 Goddess Jewels, the Harvest Goddess will appear to congratulate you. She will take the 9 Goddess Jewels and give you the Goddess Treasure in exchange. The Goddess Treasure is a white-colored stone that will recover your stamina (power berry icons) by 1 point every 1 in-game minute while you have it equipped as your active tool and you are outside (i.e., the Treasure does not work indoors because time only moves when the farmer is outdoors).

Kappa Jewels and Treasure

travel stone friends of mineral town

The 9 Kappa Jewels can be found hidden in the rocks on certain floors of the Lake Mine. This mine is located on an island in the middle of Mother's Lake. You can reach the mine during winter season when the lake water freezes and you can walk across the lake to the island. If you collect the Travel Stone from the 255th floor of the Spring Mine once you reach year 3 in the game, then you can reach the Lake Mine all year long by teleporting directly to the island.

The Kappa Jewels can be found on:

  • The entrance floor (i.e., floor 0)
  • Floors 40, 60, 80, 120, 140, 160, 180, and 255

The Kappa Jewels are less scarce than the Goddess Jewels on most floors of the mine. The jewel found in the rocks on the 255th floor of the Lake Mine pops out pretty easily compared to the other floors. You can use the same save/reload technique as when hunting for the Goddess Jewels in the Spring Mine.

After you collect all 9 Kappa Jewels, this time the Kappa will appear to congratulate you. He will take the 9 jewels and give you the Kappa Treasure in exchange. The green-colored Kappa Treasure will restore your fatigue (face icon) by 1 point every 1 in-game minute as long as it is equipped as the active tool and you are outside.

Truth Jewels and Treasure

travel stone friends of mineral town

The 9 Truth Jewels are hidden around Mineral Town. Eight of the jewels appear as you interact with objects, shops, and so on.

  • Press the A Button when standing in front of the water trough inside of the horse barn.
  • Press the A Button when standing next to the street lamp post along the north/south path between the church and Rose Plaza.
  • Press the A Button when standing in front of the Goddess statue in the church courtyard.
  • Go up to the second floor of the library and press the A Button when standing in front of the far-right bookcase in the middle of the room.
  • Exchange 1000 medals at Thomas' prize booth during the Spring or Fall Horse Race.
  • Buy from Huang's shop for 50,000 G
  • Receive as a prize for winning the Harvest Goddess' New Years math quiz show that airs on the Town Villa TV from Spring 1 to Spring 5. The extra house can be purchased from Gotts for 10 million G, 999 Lumber, and 999 Material Stone.
  • Press the A Button when standing in front of the calendar found inside the Mountain Cottage, which you'll receive as a gift from your spouse on your 50th wedding anniversary.

After you collect the first 8 Truth Jewels, go to Mayor Thomas' house on Monday through Friday and press the A Button when standing in front of the refrigerator. The last Truth Jewel will appear, and Thomas will exchange them for the Truth Treasure.

When selected as the active tool, the Truth Treasure will display your stamina and fatigue current point values on-screen. Your current fatigue points appear under the face icon, but this updated version of the GBA game already displays your stamina points, so this item isn't as beneficial as it originally was.

In the GBA game, one of the Truth Jewels could be found on the roof of the dog house. Since in the GBA remake the pets live inside of the farm house, the jewel location was changed to the Goddess' statue next to the church.

  • How To Get Cursed Tools in SoS: FoMT

Holding the Cursed Sickle in SoS:FoMT

On certain levels of the Lake Mine, you might randomly find a cursed version of the tools that you have in your bag. Each tool can appear when you’re tilling dirt on predefined floors of the mine.

Here’s a list of each Cursed Tool and which level of the Lake Mine you can find them on:

Don’t worry though; Cursed Tools aren’t a bad thing at all. That just means that you’ve discovered a new type of enhancement for your tools.

Cursed Tools are the third most powerful upgrades you can unlock in the game. You can get your tasks done a lot more quickly, but the downside is that they cost 5x as much stamina and can’t be unequipped normally.

These tools can be found on different floors (listed above), and they each have different qualities once you obtain them.

Check out this quick guide for info on all the cursed tools in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town!

Prerequisites

There are only two requirements to be able to collect a Cursed Tool:

Have Mithril-level tools and have access to the Lake Mine.

1. Mithril Upgrades

First of all, you have to upgrade all your tools to Mithril status (Level 5 upgrade).

Saibara, the town blacksmith, will upgrade your tools to Mithril if you bring him the following items:

  • A tool (any level) with at least 100% experience
  • Mithril Ore (one per tool)

Saibara upgrades the farmer’s axe to Mithril / SoS: FoMT

Once you’ve successfully upgraded all your Mithril tools, you can now officially start the Cursed Tools questline.

2. Unlocking the Lake Mine

To actually find a cursed tool, you’ll need to get to the Lake Mine first. This is the mine situated in the middle of Kappa’s lake.

Since your farmer can’t swim, the mine entrance will be inaccessible until Winter rolls around every year.

When the lake freezes over, you’ll be able to cross the ice and enter the Lake Mine.

The farmer stands on Kappa’s lake in Winter / SoS: FoMT

One way to get around this is to uncover the Travel Stone on Level 255 of the Spring Mine.

This stone will let you teleport to anywhere in Mineral Town.

The farmer stands in front of the Lake Mine entrance in Spring while holding a Travel Stone / SoS: FoMT

Simply equip this tool and click on Kappa’s lake to immediately get transported to the mine entrance. Do this trick to access the Lake Mine in any season.

Finding the Cursed Tools

Each Cursed Tool can be found on their own separate levels. To save time and effort, try unlocking the mine elevator first so you can just skip to the level you want.

The mine elevator is installed after you offer 100 liked or loved gifts to the Harvest Goddess.

The farmer stands in front of the Lake Mine elevator / SoS: FoMT

The Cursed Tools are hidden in the following levels:

Note: A Cursed Tool will not appear if your toolbag is full, so make sure you have an extra spot in the bag before venturing out to find one!

And be careful with switching tools after obtaining one – because when you equip a Cursed Tool, it can’t be unequipped unless you remove the curse. This is done by performing actions to “Bless” it .

You can also pay Carter 1,000 G to temporarily unequip your Cursed Tool. Simply visit him at Mineral Church’s confession booth and ask him to remove it from your equipped tool slot.

The farmer stands in front of Carter’s confession booth / SoS: FoMT

To permanently break the curse, though, you’ll need to complete a specific action for each separate tool.

What To Do With Cursed Tools

Collecting all Cursed Tools (and removing the curses afterward) is a requirement for unlocking Mythic Ore in the Spring Mine.

That’s not all they do, though.

The Cursed upgrade actually gives your tools a very powerful boost. You’ll be able to destroy all rocks and debris in a room with a single command, till enormous plots of land, and break large boulders in one swing.

The farmer uses a Cursed Axe to clear the farm of debris / SoS: FoMT

The catch to this is that they’re very expensive to use in terms of stamina and fatigue. You will gain +10 fatigue every time you use a Cursed Tool, and you’ll spend excessive amounts of stamina per swing (75-100 STA).

This is why it’s essential to remove the curse and “bless” them as soon as possible, because it leaves you with the same effectiveness but a fraction of the stamina cost.

All of this might seem like more trouble than it’s worth, but you’ll definitely be rewarded by sticking this out.

Achieving all Cursed and Blessed Tools are the final prerequisite to mining Mythic Ore – and the gateway to upgrading your tools to the final and most powerful level.

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

30+ Best Things to Do in Moscow, Russia by a Resident of Moscow

As someone who has had the pleasure of living in Moscow, Russia, I’m finally writing my list of the top things to do in this incredible city. From visiting gorgeous onion-domed cathedrals to exploring secret underground nuclear bunkers to sweating it out at a Russian “banya” and more… this list has a little something for everyone!

When I found out I was moving to Moscow, Russia (as a US citizen), honestly, I was terrified. Everything I had heard about Moscow, Russia prior to moving here made this city sound incredibly dark and dangerous. Fortunately (at least nowadays), that couldn’t be further from the truth! Moscow is a beautiful cosmopolitan city with amazing restaurants, history everywhere you look, and it’s surprisingly easy-to-navigate for an English-speaker.

While there are thousands of things to do in Moscow, I’m only sharing the things I’ve personally done in this city and have enjoyed (as well as those who have come to visit me in Moscow). Enjoy, and please let me know if you have any questions about visiting Moscow in the comments section at the end of the post! (You can also read my tips for how to get around the city and where to stay, at the end of this post.)

30+ Best Things to Do in Moscow, Russia by a Moscow Resident

The Red Square in Moscow, Russia

1.) Visit Red Square

The most famous city square in Moscow is Red Square. Its origins date to the late 15th century, and it is home to some of the country’s most important landmarks. The square is closed to traffic and filled with fellow travelers marveling at the sights. During the day (especially in the summer) is when it is the busiest. However, it does tend to quiet down once the sun goes down.  I highly recommend walking through Red Square both during the day and at night.

2.) Admire St. Basil’s Cathedral

Once arriving in Red Square, you’ll first notice the magnificent onion domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral. St. Basils Cathedral is one of the most iconic sites in all of Russia. This whimsical structure looks as though it came straight out of a fairytale or Disney World. In reality, St. Basil’s Cathedral was constructed between 1550 and 1560. The Cathedral does hold services, and you can also go inside St. Basil’s Cathedral if you purchase a ticket.

  • Click here for a guided walking tour of Red Square & St. Basil’s Cathedral.

The Red Square & St. Basil's Cathedral at Christmastime

3.) Explore Cathedral Square Inside the Kremlin

The Kremlin is a fortified complex in the heart of Moscow. Inside there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and an enclosing wall. The Grand Kremlin Palace is also located inside, which is the official residence of Russia’s president…like The White House. (However, he doesn’t actually live there.)

There are three cathedrals facing each other in Cathedral Square : the Cathedral of the Dormition, the Cathedral of the Archangel, and the Cathedral of the Annunciation. One of the tallest structures in the square (and formerly in all of Russia) is Ivan the Great Bell Tower. You’ll also see Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell – the biggest cannon and bell in the world.  ( Tickets are required for you to enter Cathedral Square.)

The Cathedral of the Annunciation

4.) Don’t Miss the Kremlin Armoury! (One of the Oldest Museums in Moscow.)

In my opinion, the Kremlin Armoury is the most impressive part of the Kremlin. The name suggests it would be filled with weapons and such. While that does make up some of the displays, the rest consists of incredible jewels and ornate gifts..and of course, the incredible Faberge eggs collection. There are even dresses displayed which Catherine the Great wore and the carriages she had used. (Seriously, there’s a whole room dedicated to carriages inside the Armoury – it’s incredible.) You can also see thrones used by tsars throughout the centuries. No photos are allowed but take my word, this is a must-see in Moscow!

  • Please note: the Armoury requires you to purchase a separate ticket from the ticket purchased for Cathedral Square.
  • Click here for more information on how getting inside the Kremlin works.

5.) See Lenin’s Mausoleum

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is located in Red Square. It’s a mausoleum that currently serves as the resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. His preserved body has been on public display there since shortly after his death in 1924. (Lenin resembles more of a wax figure than a well-preserved body – it’s an interesting and rather controversial thing to see.)

The tomb is free to visit, but it’s only open from 10 am – 1 pm, Tuesday – Saturday.

  • Click here for a Communist Moscow Tour of Lenin’s Mausoleum.

6.) Enjoy a Show at the Bolshoi

Seeing a performance at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow should definitely be at the top of your Moscow bucket list! This historic theatre holds some of the world’s best ballet and opera performances. If possible, I highly recommend seeing a ballet performance on the Historic Stage. (If you’re visiting during Christmastime – The Nutcracker ballet performance is, hands down, the best performance I’ve seen in my life.) Also, book your tickets in advance, as they can sell out quickly – especially for popular performances such as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake.

  • Click here for the Bolshoi schedule of performances.
  • Click here for a detailed guide of how to dress for the Bolshoi Theatre.

7.) Tour the Bolshoi Theatre

If seeing a performance at the Bolshoi Theatre doesn’t work out, another option is to take a tour of the Bolshoi Theatre. Tickets are purchased on the day of the tour at the ticket office of the Historic Theatre.

  • Click here to see the Bolshoi’s current tour schedule.

8.) Shop/Window Shop at the GUM mall

The GUM Mall is located in Red Square as well, and is Moscow’s most iconic department store. It’s worth a stroll through as the inside is quite pretty and there are more than 150 stores to look through. However, the stores inside are on the pricey end of the spectrum – such as Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton , etc. (This is a place where I enjoy window shopping!)

photos of the GUM Mall during Christmas in Moscow, Russia

9.) Shop at Okhotny Ryad & Enjoy Its Expansive Food Court

Okhotny Ryad is a mall that is also located in Red Square. However, this one is located underground. You can enter it via Alexander’s Garden or there is also an entrance in front of the Four Season’s Hotel in Red Square.

This mall is more budget-friendly and has a great food court! (Perfect to stop here for a quick bite to eat after touring the Kremlin or Red Square.) In this mall. you’ll find a mix of Russian designers and local Moscow designers, as well as your normal mall stuff such as The Body Shop, Billabong and Mango. (I really enjoy shopping here!)

10.) Bargain at Izmailovksy Market

The BEST place to buy your Russian souvenirs , though, is Izmailvosky Market . It’s located just outside the city center and is easy to get to via the metro. The prices here are a fraction of what you’ll pay in the city center for the same souvenirs… and you can barter! Even if you aren’t a fan of shopping, I can assure you that you’ll enjoy visiting Izmailovsky Market. It’s a unique Moscow experience to simply walk and look through the various stalls. There is also plenty of food and beverage stands to choose from here.

  • Click here for more information on visiting Izmailovsky Market.

Izmailovsky Market

11.) Try the Vodka Museum (Inside Izmailvosky Market)

When you think of Russia, you can’t help but also think “vodka.” Russians and vodka have a longstanding history with one another. And the Vodka Museum in Moscow is here to shed some more light on this history! (Plus, there are inexpensive vodka tastings here…need I say more?)

If you have an hour to spare when you’re at Izmailvosky Market, you can pop into the museum for a tasting and an audio tour!

  • Click here for more info on visiting the Vodka Museum in Moscow.

12.) Take a Metro Tour

As crazy as it may sound, Moscow’s Metro is so beautiful it absolutely deserves its own tour. You can visit scores of stations and be blown away by each station’s unique architecture. There are over 200 subway stations in Moscow, so it is certainly worth having a plan before you go. (The majority of the famous stations are on the Brown Line.)

  • Click here for more info on touring the Moscow Metro.

13.) Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is one of my favorite places in Moscow. The exterior of the cathedral is opulent and stunning. It’s also located next to the Moskva River which is a lovely area to walk during the summer.

The inside of The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is beautiful as well, and it’s free to enter. (The viewing platform you can climb to on top of the cathedral does charge a small fee, though.)

Note: the security will turn you away from visiting the inside if you are not properly dressed (ask my husband!) – no shorts for men, and no short skirts for women.

14.) Stroll Through Gorky Park

While you’re over by Christ the Saviour, you can also take a walk through Gorky Park! (They’re quite close to each other.) Here you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the river, or rent a bike and really explore this expansive park! There are also many of lovely little places to grab a bite to eat in Gorky Park. It’s a great way to spend a warm summer afternoon. (However, if you visit in winter, Gorky Park also has an incredible ice skating rink.)

15.) Experience a Russian Banya

I can’t recommend visiting a Russian Banya enough! This is one of my most memorable Moscow experiences (and any guest who has visited me here as said the same). In short, a banya is similar to a sauna. The biggest difference, though, is that a “banya” has high levels of humidity in it, while a sauna will have dry air. They’ve been a part of Russian life for over a thousand years!

I recommend going to a public banya for the most authentic experience. I specifically recommend Sanduny Banya – as it is the oldest and most luxurious banya in Moscow. Plus, it’s conveniently located in the city center, not far from Red Square. I also recommend Banya Zhivica if you would like a private banya experience.

16.) Walk Down Old Arbat Street

Arbat is a pedestrian street just west of the Kremlin, and it’s the most famous street in Moscow. Here you’ll find many street performers, shops, cafes and souvenirs galore. Arbat is definitely worth walking down, however, I recommend buying your souvenirs at Izmailovsky Market (#10 on this list), and there are far better restaurants in Moscow on this list here than you’ll find on Arbat Street.

17.) Sample Russian Cuisine!

Speaking of food, you can’t come to Moscow and not try some traditional Russian cuisine!

Some of the best Russian food and drinks to sample on your visit here, are:

  • Pelmeni – this is a Russian dumpling filled with meat and usually topped with sour cream.
  • Borscht – is a traditional Russian soup that’s main ingredient is beetroot.
  • Beef stroganoff – is a Russian dish made with sautéed beef in a sauce with smetana.
  • Syrniki – this is my FAVORITE Russian food. It’s essentially a cottage cheese pancake topped with jam or sour cream. SO good!
  • Kvass – is a fermented beverage made from rye bread. It’s a unique drink! The only thing I have had that’s comparable is kombucha.

18.) Take “A Gentleman in Moscow” Tour of the Metropol

If you haven’t read the book “ A Gentleman in Moscow ” by Amor Towles, stop what you’re doing and find yourself a copy of it! It’s such a good book. While the book is historical Russian fiction, the places mentioned in the book are very real. The most important place is the “ Metropol Hotel .” This is where almost the entire book takes place. You can take your very own tour of the Metropol Hotel while you’re in Moscow and relive scenes from it!

  • Click here for more info on how to create your own “A Gentleman in Moscow” tour.

19.) Go Into the Depths of the Top Secret Bunker-42

Bunker-42 was once a top-secret, Soviet military complex. Stalin had commissioned it to be made after the United States created a nuclear bomb. 65 meters (or about 213 feet) underground, was the desired depth to protect Russia’s top officials from a nuclear attack.

It became operational in 1954. Fortunately, it was never needed for its true purpose and was instead used as the command center of strategic bombers for nearly 30 years in Moscow. Now, it is a museum dedicated to the Cold War that you can tour. It is a truly unique experience!

  • Click here for more info on visiting Bunker-42.

20.) Visit Victory Park

Victory Park (aka Park Pobedy) in Moscow is home to 13 unique memorials, more than 300 pieces of weaponry, the largest flower clock in the world, 13 restaurants, a synagogue, a mosque, and an Orthodox chapel. It’s quite an interesting mix worth seeing if your schedule allows. (Those interested in World War II history will especially enjoy visiting here.)

  • Click here for more information on visiting Victory Park.

21.) Ride a Tank!

If simply looking at tanks at Victory Park isn’t exciting enough for you… you can actually ride a tank just outside of Moscow! There are quite a few tank tour companies in Moscow. I, personally, have tried the T-34 Tank Ride . It’s a pretty pricey experience, but it’s also a very uniquely Russian experience!

  • Click here for more info on riding a tank in Moscow.

7 Crazy & Unusual Things to Do in Moscow, Russia

22.) Shoot an AK-47

The tank tour above does allow you to shoot blank shots out of an AK-47 to get “the experience” – if you’re interested in shooting Russian guns, that is. (This was more than enough of a “shooting experience” for me.)  However, I’ve had family members visit who were more interested in trying to shoot an AK-47 at a gun range. So, I can also recommend a shooting range right in the heart of Moscow that allows you to shoot live ammo from an AK-47 – Shooting Range “Labyrinth.” (Must be 18 years or older and bring your passport along.) You don’t need to have any experience either! A trained professional will be there to teach you the basic skills.

  • Click here  for more information.

23.) Tour the Museum of Cosmonautics

The Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration. It charts the history of the Russian space race and famous Russian astronauts and has an impressive variety of space equipment, suits…and even some famous taxidermied dogs (more on that here ). The museum itself is actually located at the base of the monument “To the Conquerors of Space,” which is a 100-meter titanium obelisk erected in 1964 to celebrate the achievements of the Soviet people in space exploration. (Pictured below.)

  • Click here for more information on the Museum of Cosmonautics.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

24.) Explore Star City

Star City is the facility where the cosmonauts train. Until the early 90s, it was a top-secret location, but now, you can tour it . Here you can see models of the Russian spacecraft Soyuz, marvel at the world’s largest centrifuge, and visit the hydro-laboratory with a model of the International Space Station.

If this is something you are interested in doing, you MUST book your tour at least 45 days in advance of your visit.

  • Click here for more info on visiting Star City.

25.) Take a River Cruise

Enjoy the famous landmarks of Moscow from the water! The deck of the ships provides stunning views of the waterfront, both during the day and in the evening. (I also celebrated NYE in Moscow onboard a river cruise.)

  • Click here for more info on Moscow River Cruises.

26.) See the Seven Sisters

The Seven Sisters are a group of seven skyscrapers in Moscow designed in the Stalinist style. They were built from 1947 to 1953. The seven are: the Radisson Hotel , Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Apartments, the Kudrinskaya Square Building, the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya , the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the main building of the Moscow State University, and the Red Gates Administrative Building. (So, a couple of them you can actually stay in, or dine in – the Radisson has a great restaurant in it.)

27.) Explore the Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretyakov Gallery is one of the greatest museums in the world. It’s not far from the Kremlin. The Gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art and artists who have made a contribution to the history of Russian art. There are more than 180,000 works of painting, sculpture and graphics, created throughout the centuries by successive generations of Russian artists.

  • Click here for more information on the State Tretyakov Gallery.

28.) Check Out the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

If you enjoy art, then you’ll love the Pushkin State Museum. It’s is the largest museum of European art in Moscow. It’s located in Volkhonka street, just opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

If you only have enough time to visit one of these museums, though, I recommend the Tretyakov Gallery. This is because the Tretyakov Gallery is unique to Russia and features Russian artists.

  • Click here for more information on the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

29.) Visit the Moscow Zoo

The Moscow Zoo is home to more than 8,000 animals and nearly 1,000 different species. This zoo is also one of the oldest zoos in the world, as it opened way back in 1864. If you have kiddos along for your trip to Moscow, they will LOVE this zoo! They have a lot of opportunities to watch feedings of the animals, and a petting zoo that the kids love.

  • Click here for more info on visiting the Moscow Zoo.

30.) Meander Through Patriarch’s Ponds & Have Dinner Here

Patriach’s Ponds only has one small pond (but very nice, nonetheless). However, the neighborhood itself has some amazing restaurants and bars. During the summer, many of these restaurants have lovely little outdoor dining areas as well. And at least the last couple of summers, there were quite a few Russian movies being shot in this neighborhood as well. So, you could enjoy a drink and watch a movie production!

31.) Walk Kamergersky Lane at Night!

While Nikolskaya Street is an incredibly popular pedestrian street to walk at night, thanks to its thousands of twinkly lights and cafes – it’s very crowded! (It connects Red Square and Lubyanka Square.) I, personally, prefer Kamergersky Lane, as it is less crowded and also has the same lights and lovely cafes and restaurants. (It’s about a 20-minute walk from the Red Square.)

kamergersky lane

32.) Enjoy the Views of Moscow From the Ostankino Television Tower

This is the highest point in Moscow and offers amazing panoramic views of the city. There is also a restaurant and two cafes in this tower – so you can enjoy a coffee or a meal while you enjoy the views!

  • Click here for more information on visiting the Ostankino Television Tower.

Getting Around in Moscow

  • I recommend walking as much as possible when in Moscow. It’s one of the safest and most beautiful cities I have ever visited. For this, I recommend getting the Yandex Maps app. (Google Maps is getting there, however, Yandex is still the best for maps in Russia.)
  • Then, I recommend taking the metro as frequently as possible! It’s affordable, and many of the stations are absolutely beautiful. ( Click here  for all my tips for taking the Moscow Metro.)
  • But sometimes, it’s just easier and quicker to take a cab. For taking a cab, I recommend downloading the Gett and Yandex Taxi apps. These are English-friendly apps that work the same as Uber. (Uber currently does not work in Moscow.) Gett is my personal favorite taxi app.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Luxury Stays:

These hotels are top-notch and are in the best spots in the city! Obviously, the prices reflect this.

  • Metropol Hotel  – If you’re a fan of the book “A Gentleman in Moscow” then you must stay at the historic Metropol Hotel! It’s located directly across from the Bolshoi as well.  Click here  for my experience here.
  • The Four Seasons  – Arguably the most centrally located hotel of them all. The Four Seasons is literally just outside the walls of the Kremlin as well as the Bolshoi. (I, personally, liked grabbing a drink at their bar to people watch in the winter.)
  • The Ritz Carlton  – located just across the road from the Kremlin with modern rooms and great views of the Kremlin.

“A Gentleman in Moscow” Tour of the Metropol Hotel – How You Can Follow in the Count’s Footsteps

Centr ally located hotels that are less expensive:

These hotels have great locations and will be within walking distance of many attractions. However, many of the hotels mentioned below are quite dated. So, be aware of that before making your booking.

  • Moscow Marriott Royal Aurora Hotel  – My friends stayed at this hotel for a few weeks and said it was in a fantastic location and the staff are great – but the rooms are quite dated.)
  • Budapest Hotel  – Had another set of friends stay here – they loved the location. It’s just a couple blocks away from the Marriott above. But, again, the rooms are very dated.)
  • Centeral Hostel Moscow  – This is in a fantastic location as well, and it is also near the two hotels mentioned above. The price tag on this hostel is very reasonable in winter as well.

My Personal Favorite Hotel:

  • Marriott Moscow Hotel Novy Arbat  – This is the hotel I had stayed at when I was in between apartments. It’s a little further away from everything, and would likely require a cab to get to most of the attractions during winter. However, the rooms here are very nice and the breakfast and lounge are fantastic as well. I also really like the spa and gym at this hotel.

If anyone has any questions at all about visiting Moscow, please feel free to reach out in the comments section at the end of this post. I would also love to hear your favorite things to do in Moscow as well! I know I’ve only scratched the surface with this post, and would love for my readers to hear more feedback on other things to do in this beautiful city!

Travel Insurance

It’s a good idea, no matter where your adventure takes you, to have travel insurance. You never know what might happen! Whether you get sick before your trip and can’t go, or you become sick or injured while on your adventure – being covered with travel insurance is a must. Some credit card companies do provide this service (check with yours), or you can get a quote from companies such as Squaremouth to find the best plan for you and your adventure. (This is the company I, personally use. They are even recommended by Forbes!) To get a free quote, click here .
