Dream Escapes: Why Mochlos, Crete is perfect for a spring getaway

Crystalline waters, charming tavernas and ancient ruins make this gem on greece's largest isle just right for a spring getaway.

Peering out across the rippling waves on the edge of Mochlos village, four-bedroomed Villa Melitina makes for a ravishing spot to while away a sun-drenched week with your nearest and dearest. Interiors assume a cool, contemporary aesthetic (think sleek white washed spaces with hits of earthy texture) and there's no shortage of space for the whole gang, though you'll spend a good chunk of your stay lolling on the slate-toned loungers beside the infinity pool, taking it easy and listening to the cicadas begin to chirrup as golden hour rolls around.

Breakfast at Villa Melitina - whipped up by charming housekeeper, Sofia - doesn't disappoint. Gather beneath the pergola where fresh fruit, pastries, local jams and honey await, then you'll tuck into buttery scrambled eggs served atop hunks of just-baked sourdough. Down in Mochlos itself, The Rocks - positioned right at the water's edge - turns out superb iced coffee and smoothies by day and expertly-mixed cocktails by night, and come supper time you'll want to snag a table at Tá Kochília for the melt-in-the-mouth seabass carpaccio, zesty Greek salads and sigh-inducing sunset vistas.

Wander Mochlos' cobbled, bougainvillea-strung streets and you’ll happen across a handful of little shops. Browse billowy linen sundresses, straw baskets and dainty beaded bracelets at Chez Cecile, and be sure to drop into Amalthea for hand-crafted soaps and body scrubs featuring almond kernels and olive oil from the surrounding hills, beside a collection of mindfully-made ceramics.

Lapped by cerulean waters, the understated yet oh-so pretty village of Mochlos sits in the gulf of Mirabello, on Crete's eastern edge - a five minute meander from Villa Melitina. The pace here is wonderfully slow and blue-skied mornings might begin with a hike in the scrubby hills or a refreshing swim off the jetty. Energetic types can swim out to the Minoan settlement on the itsy-bitsy island just across the way, or instead, call upon Giorgos who'll gladly take you over there for just a few euros - look out for his blue and white painted boat in the bay. Those keen to explore further afield can spend an afternoon driving along the southeast coast, taking in the many pine-fringed beaches and the Kapsa Monastery, with its serene rock-hewn chapel.

A superb holiday company

A superb holiday company. The accommodation, staff, travel arrangements are always excellent. But more than this, they deal with emergencies. In the UK, when our designated airline went bust a few years ago they got us onto another airline from another airport that same day. And overseas, when we had a medical emergency, the hotel manager accompanied us to hospital in the middle of the night, stayed with us. translated, and dealt with everything, including aftercare. I can't speak too highly of them.

Beautiful villa with private pool

Beautiful villa with private pool, fantastic views and access to all services at the hotel next door. Direct access to a quiet beach with two excellent tavernas. Brilliant concierge for all questions, recommendations, etc. Lots of steps and a steep hill to and from the villa. Easy to avoid if you have a car. Good exercise if you don't.

Lovely villa in the hills

Lovely villa in the hills, beautiful accommodation and grounds. Exceeded our expectations. The website images were a true representation. The websites indicated 3 showers but only 2 and no music docking station but this was not a big issue for us. The hosts were wonderful people and looked after us really well. Nothing was too much trouble. Our Simpson rep was always at hand and very helpful. Although everything is a 10 min drive away, a car is essential as it is in the hills. We visited the Old Windmill restaurant and our rep organised for a driver from a neighbouring villa complex to take and collect us for a fee(not cheap) so that we could have a day off from driving as no taxi’s available. Would highly recommend Simpson Travel and staying at Villa Sigalia, Zante. Just be aware that a lot of places are closed on bank holiday Easter (was 5th May) outside of Zante town.

An outstanding holiday experience if you prefer a peaceful and unique experience with outstanding views, food and charming people, be warned though, away from the coast very little or no English is spoken, but the local people are very friendly and helpful. Simpson's really have got this type of Villa and Boutique Hotel experience well organised, this is our 4th trip with them, and cannot speak highly enough of the experience
