Juniper springs canoe run and kayaking in florida’s ocala national forest.

For a glorious, relaxing kayak trip you can’t beat Juniper Run National Forest in Ocala , sited in North Central Florida.

Heralded as one of the top 25 canoe runs in America by ReserveAmerica, this paddling trip promises gin-clear water that meanders under a dense canopy of old-growth forest. The upper portion of the run is narrow, with twists and turns, and gradually widens as you make your way downstream.

Juniper Run is about seven miles in length. You'll launch from Juniper Springs Recreation Area and journey through the center of Juniper Prairie Wilderness before you reach the take-out off SR 19, well before the run flows into the St. Johns River at Lake George.

If you don't have your own boat, you can rent canoes at Juniper Springs. If you’re bringing your own canoe or kayak, a shuttle service is provided back to the parking area for a small fee.

Juniper Springs Recreation Area opens at 8 a.m., and I'd recommend you get there as early as possible. You'll be one of the first boats on the run and can get off the water before noon.

Make sure to save time after your kayaking expedition to swim and explore the park’s trails. Don't miss walking out to Fern Hammock Springs, one of the most beautiful springs in Florida.

Places to Remember

The Canyons Zip Line & Canopy Tours in Ocala feature 9 zip lines, 2 rope bridges and a rappel. For those who like to stay closer to the ground, The Canyons also offers horseback riding throughout this amazing park. A 94-acre abandoned limestone quarry off an Interstate 75 exit in Ocala, is like a cluster of deep canyons. Rocky cliffs, wide blue lakes and towering trees look untouched since the limestone miners walked away in the 1930s.

Juniper Springs Kayaking & Canoe Run in Florida, Ocala National Forest

Juniper Springs has one of the best kayaking and canoe runs in Florida . On our recent car camping trip, we were looking forward to kayaking in Juniper Springs more than anything! It’s about as old-Florida as you can get paddling through untouched Ocala National Forest with old-growth trees, vibrant wildlife, and peaceful serenity.

We even floated near a couple alligators! ??

Juniper Springs in Ocala is famous for its seven mile canoe and kayak run and when you’re done kayaking, you can enjoy the crystal-clear swimming hole that stays a constant 72 degrees year round.

Juniper Springs Kayaking & Canoe Run

It’s one of our favorite parks for kayaking in Florida, especially near Daytona Beach. We’ve paddled down that canoe and kayak run more times than we can count and it’s a different adventure every time.

How long does it take to canoe Juniper run?

Depending on your skill level and general fitness, it can take anywhere from three to five hours to canoe or kayak Juniper run. It’s worth noting that this is not a beginner’s course and we consider it at least an intermediate level course. Once you start, there’s no turning back or turning off. At some point on your trip, you might even need to get out of your boat to pull or push it over downed logs, or maybe a bathroom break.

We’ve had to for both on a few trips!

If you’ve never been canoeing or kayaking with a partner, this run can be a serious relationship tester for less-skilled paddlers. Some have even called them “divorce boats.” ? Not even kidding.

Steering is critical, especially for the person in the back of the boat since there are endless hairpin turns in the forest section that require sharp maneuvering. Be prepared to end up in the bushes at some no matter how hard you try!

Also one thing to note is you have to bring your canoe or kayak on a cart quite a walk down to the launch and then walk your cart back so you can pick up your life vests and whistle. After hours of paddling, at the end of your journey you also have to hoist your boat out of the water onto the dock to be put onto the shuttle bus.

How much does it cost to get into Juniper Springs?

At Juniper Springs , a kayak rental cost us $47 for a tandem kayak. A canoe rental was $42 and both also required a $20 deposit plus taxes. One big plus for people like us that don’t have a truck or trailer to bring our own kayaks is that they pick you up at the end and shuttle you back to the park which is included in the fee. If you bring your own kayak or canoe, there’s a $6 launch fee and a $12 pick-up fee to have them bring you back. For day use, it costs $5.50 per person to get into the park.

What kind of containers are you allowed to bring on Juniper run?

Short answer: Nothing disposable.

Before dropping into the water and starting the run, there are cooler checks to make sure no one brings anything that could end up polluting the waterways. Anything not specifically made to be a reusable container won’t be allowed and also no glass. So that means, no wrappers of any kind, cans, glass bottles, or disposable plastic bottles.

That starts to get a bit confusing, but as long as you bring plastic “reusable” containers you should be good to go. Also no alcohol. You might be able to get some things past if you don’t get checked, but it’s not worth the annoyance.

Can you swim at Juniper Springs?

Yes! At the main recreational area, there’s a large natural swimming pool where you can swim and snorkel. On the Juniper canoe and kayak run, we’ve seen people swimming, but only in the clear areas. We don’t like to swim because of the next item on the list, alligators.

Are there alligators in Juniper Springs?

Yes! If you go on the canoe & kayak run you will most likely see an alligator or two resting on a bank in the sun. Most of the time we saw alligators at about the halfway point around a bend and didn’t see any more on the last quarter of the adventure. But just because you don’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there which is why we don’t like to swim on the run.

Things To Do Travel

Four great rivers to kayak or canoe from a base in ocala.

Author

There’s no better way to appreciate their splendid beauty than by kayak or canoe, and winter and spring are the best times to do it.

A great place to base yourself for a getaway devoted to paddling the springs and the rivers they form is Ocala.

In the Ocala area, you can paddle four rivers in four days and all are well-served by outfitters that rent gear and livery service. At all four, you can launch your own kayaks, too.

Beyond the beautiful water and vegetation, on these rivers you have a good chance to see wildlife — from manatees to American eagles to alligators and even monkeys.

Here’s a guide to help you make your travel plans.

Scenic Silver River near Ocala is popular for canoeing and kayaking.

Silver Spring and the Silver River

If I had to pick a favorite of these four, it would be the Silver River.

How can you beat this trifecta of wildlife experiences, all from a December trip? Rhesus monkeys scampering overhead in the tree tops, manatees lolling around in water so clear you can see every scar on their broad backs, and hundreds of ibises, white wings flapping against brilliant blue sky?

You begin your kayak trip at Silver Spring State Park in Ocala, where the outfitter rents clear-bottom kayaks as well as other kayaks and canoes. You can see the best of the river in two hours of out-and-back paddling. (It’s not hard to paddle upstream.) But, unless it is an off season weekday (as it was for us in early December), the outfitter will pick you up five miles downstream and livery you back to the state park. If livery service is available, I recommend the downstream trip.

Tip : This is a great river for beginners: Paddling is easy with the current and little skill in turning is required.

Juniper Springs near Ocala is the healthiest, most natural spring in Florida.

Juniper Springs in Ocala National Forest

Juniper is a Florida spring with a distinction: It’s the healthiest, most natural spring in the state, according to a recent assessment. The water at the springhead is so clear and shallow that boats appear to float above white sand. Because the spring-shed is largely within Ocala National Forest, the Juniper isn’t affected by fertilizer and septic tanks, as are most Florida springs and rivers.

Juniper Run is also among the narrowest, with twists and turns that create intimate spaces where the cypress trees and foliage surround you.

And therein lies the controversy about paddling Juniper Run. If you read online reviews at sites like TripAdvisor.com, a number of people call paddling here the “worst day ever.” There were enough comments about how difficult this run is and how miserable the experience, we were prepared for something very challenging. We had paddled it a few years ago, but we figured the trail must have deteriorated.

To our surprise, this run was as delightful as we remembered. It does require a paddler to be able to make some tight turns and inexperienced kayakers and canoers might find it frustrating. I say: Just bounce off the edges and laugh.

Tip : Get an early start, as no boats are allowed down the run in the afternoon, in order to ensure everyone finishes by closing time. Also: This is not a good “first river” if you’ve never paddled before.

Alexander Springs is a crystal clear river in Ocala National Forest.

Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest

If you want a relaxing, easy paddle with lots of birds and wildlife, Alexander Springs is a good choice.

If you only have an hour or two but want to experience a river with crystal clear water, Alexander is for you.

If you want to see how two spring-fed rivers 20 minutes apart can look and feel quite different — then paddle Juniper and Alexander back-to-back.

We hadn’t planned to paddle Alexander, but when Juniper was closed due to a black bear family hanging out at the canoe launch, it was an easy substitute. And we’re glad we got to experience Alexander.

There are no motor boats on this river and it is less intensively used than Juniper, so it was a quiet, bird-filled trip whose highlight for us was seeing an American eagle.

Tip : If you want to swim in a spring, Juniper is the best choice in Ocala National Forest. The spring basin is broad with a sandy bottom. Snorkelers and scuba divers enjoy exploring the limestone rocks and boulders in the spring boil.

The Ocklawaha River runs through Ocala National Forest.

Ocklawaha River along Ocala National Forest

The Ocklawaha is probably the least familiar of the four rivers. Although it receives all the water from the clear Silver River, only the lower portion is clear spring water, as the Ocklawaha begins to darken as tannins seep into the water from vegetation.

The Ocklawaha forms the western border of Ocala National Forest and thus it passed through wild and natural scenery with an abundance of birds and wildlife.

The best part? Fewer people paddle the Ocklawaha and the space seems vast. There are no telltale highway sounds or power lines to bring you back to daily life.

Tip : If you want to do kayak-camping in a wild place, the Ocklawaha lends itself to a multi-day outing with primitive camping.

River Trips on the Ocklawaha River

Why paddle when you can drift, canoeing and kayaking on the ocklawaha river.

Canoeing in Florida is like a day in paradise with your family or group (minimum age 5 years old). Plenty of water makes for great fun on your river trip on the Ocklawaha River. Camp overnight or canoe for just a few hours, Ocklawaha Canoe Outpost & Resort will be there to ensure a peaceful and relaxing journey.

"The Ocklawaha is the sweetest water lane in the world, a lane which runs for more than 150 miles of pure delight..." Poet Sidney Lanier

As your day trip begins, you and your gear are loaded into one of our vans or buses and transported about eight miles through scenic backwoods to your put-in point.

We unload the canoes and put them in the water and you are sent off on one of Florida's most scenic and tranquil rivers. As you go downstream traveling with the three to five-knot current, your journey will be one of quiet and relaxing solitude. On your trip, you will be able to swing from a rope swing over the river or sit on your own private part of the river bank away from the noise and confusion of the city.

This trip can be done in a non strenuous 4 hours or you can spend the whole day on the river. When you return, relaxed and refreshed to the outpost, you leave the canoe at our landing and we do all the cleanup.

RiverMap

The most popular overnight canoe trip starts when you arrive at the Outpost. After checking in, you, your camping gear and the canoes are transported to whichever drop point you have chosen.   Once on the river, you leave civilization behind.  The trip down the river is easy paddling with unrivaled beauty.

The river winds through the old Florida outback. It is wide and deep so there are no portages necessary, even in the times of seasonal high or low water. Camp can be set up anywhere there is high ground on the Ocklawaha River.  Take your time, enjoy the scenery!

When you arrive back at the Ocklawaha Canoe Outpost landing, we load up your personal equipment and deliver it to your vehicle.

For half-day and day trips, we provide canoes or kayaks, paddles, life vests, a river map, parking, and transportation. You depart as scheduled and return to the Outpost by 5 PM.

The Gore's landing trip is the most popular. It offers unique possibilities for exploratory side trips on the Dead River, Cedar Creek and tributaries (there may be blockages that prevent side trips).  Add a minimum of 2 miles distance and 1 hour paddling time if you plan to explore.

Overnight Trips

Overnight trips include the canoe/kayak, paddles, life vests, river map, parking and transportation.  The option to extend the number of days on the river is available for an additional fee.

Please note there is a separate fee to launch from Silver Springs (paid at arrival to the launch site)

Firewood is available to purchase for overnight trips for $5 a bundle.

Juniper Springs Run...

Swift, clear kayaking in the ocala national forest.

The paddling trail from Juniper Springs Recreation Area to Juniper Wayside Park extends about 7 miles. Paddling can be very technical , especially at high water, best for experienced paddlers . There are no intermediate access points, the average trip is about 4 hours. ( Detailed map and photos below. )

The spring is actually many springs both in the main spring bowl and along the spring run - watch and listen for them. This is a popular destination and can be very busy, especially on weekends. As one of the pristine springs in Florida, the rules are strictly enforced - they DO check your coolers and bags. No plastic bags or disposable containers are allowed, even candy bars need to be taken out of their wrappers. Check with the livery service for launch hours as well, everyone must be off the run by sunset and launch times are strictly enforced.

Note : Shuttle and rentals are temporarily unavailable. Check for updates .

At the launch

We used the livery for a reverse pick-up (we dropped off our kayaks at the launch, drove our car to Wayside Park and they drove us back). From the staging area a boardwalk leads to the launch, carts are provided.

Upper section

The first 1.5 miles is the prettiest - narrow and winding, with crystal clear, shallow water - but also swift moving. Some downed trees required maneuvering around and under.

Middle section

The middle section alternates between wider, deeper water and narrower runs. A rapids runs here - our camera died just then and not a good point to pull out the backup, so no photos! There were some obstacles to maneuver around.

Lower section

At the bottom, the creek widens out through wetlands before arriving at Wayside Park - a good section for viewing birds and alligators.

Wildlife along the spring run include deer, otters, raccoons, alligators, birds, and black bears. The run goes past palms, cypress and southern hardwoods plus sawgrass and wetlands.

Juniper Springs Recreation Area in the Ocala National Forest is one of the oldest in the U.S., constructed by the CCC in the 1930's. Of historical interest is the Millhouse - since the area was far from any sources of electricity, the millhouse was built to use the spring itself to generate power. The recreational area includes camping, picnicking, swimming, snorkeling, and hiking. An 8-mile segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail runs through the Juniper Prairie Wilderness .

Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest: Cool swimming, easy scenic paddling plus lots of wildlife

By: Author Bonnie Gross

Posted on Last updated: July 5, 2024

When a mama bear and two cubs on the boardwalk shut down Juniper Springs, we were so disappointed – until we saw nearby Alexander Springs, where we had an outstanding day of paddling.

Just 20 minutes apart, these two springs in Ocala National Forest are different enough to merit kayaking or canoeing them both.

Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest offers easy scenic paddling with lots of wildlife.

Alexander Springs will suit some people better – it’s an easy paddle requiring no experience or skills. Where Juniper is narrow and twisty, Alexander is 60 to 80 feet wide and slower moving.

Both have exceptional water clarity and are surrounded by unspoiled forest and vegetation. The sunny Alexander passes through a yellow pine lowland and a riverine swamp, with marsh grasses, lily pads and palm trees along the shore. Shady Juniper has live oaks and cypress trees.

In fall, the colors are are oranges and golds ata Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest.(Photo: Bonnie Gross)

The springhead at Alexander Springs creates a large, shallow sandy-bottom natural pool ideal for swimming – if you like swimming in 72 degree water. Where the spring emerges from the bottom, snorkelers and scuba divers enjoy exploring the limestone rocks and boulders in the spring boil. The swimmers in our group gave Alexander Springs top marks as a swimming hole. (You can rent snorkel gear here too.) Lifeguards are on duty seven days a week 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 15 to Sept. 15.

Alexander Springs is a first-magnitude spring, meaning it discharges at least 100 cubic feet of water per second and it’s the only one in a national park or forest. (There are 27 first magnitude springs in Florida.)

We loved the wildlife aat Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest, including so many turtles. (Photo; Bonnie Gross)

What made Alexander Springs delightful was the wildlife we saw above and below the water.

A highlight: A bald eagle flew over the river twice, giving us an exceptional view. But we loved seeing all sorts of birds from herons to belted kingfishers.

In the water, there were schools of fish (look for bass and bluegill) and beautiful turtles who seemed to be flying because the water is aquarium-clear.

A great blue heron at Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest was just one of the birds we loved seeing. There also was a bald eagle. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)

On the cool December day we visited, the ranger said others reported seeing otters and a doe swimming across the river. And we missed seeing Alice the Alligator, a 12-footer who we were told hangs out under the bridge.

Alexander Springs is a relatively short out-and-back kayak. The outfitter recommended going only to the bridge, which is a mile distance, and said vegetation made it difficult to go farther. But we easily paddled another mile downstream and loved every minute. Even there, we suspect we could have paddled farther, though we would be making our way through vegetation.

The current is mild enough that is it easy to paddle back upstream and it makes a good three or four hour paddle, depending on how long you pause to picnic, photograph or fish.

We found an island on the Alexander Springs run where we could have a picnic. (Photo: David Blasco)

There are few places to land for a picnic. We were told the best spot is around the bridge, but we also found an island downstream beyond there that made an ideal spot – small but picturesque.

We had the river to ourselves on a winter weekday and we loved the surprising (for Florida) fall colors of the trees and the beautiful bunches of purple asters.

Peak season here is summer, although this river has no shade and would be very hot. (There’s no swimming outside the designated area because of alligators.)

The swimming area at Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest is excellent -- if you like 72 degree water. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)

Unlike many Florida springs, Alexander Springs is quite healthy – nutrient levels, which can feed algae growth, have not increased over the entire 60 years they have been measured. (It helps that much of the springshed – the ground through which the water passes on its way underground into the springs– is inside Ocala National Forest.)

Visiting Alexander Springs in Ocala National Forest

You can rent canoes here. While all day rentals are available, unless you plan to fish, you probably won’t need more than four hours. There is no shuttle service.

If you have your own canoe or kayak, you can launch here for a small fee.

The area around Alexander Springs offers excellent shaded picnic tables and the short Timucuan Trail, which has a beat up wooden boardwalk through jungle vegetation.

Alexander Springs camping

Camping here gets high marks, especially from tent campers.

Our group included an adult who had camped here with his family as a child 50 years ago and remembers the area fondly.

The campground is quite close to the swimming area. The only complaints you see in reviews of Alexander Springs camping is noise from inconsiderate campers and the spring gets very busy on weekends. There is a small general store.

Camping details: This 67-unit campground can accommodate recreation vehicles up to 35 feet but there are no water or electric hookups . We saw about a half-dozen pull-through sites alongside the main campground road.

The campground seems well-maintained, although it’s showing its age.

Every site has a picnic table, fire ring and grill. All campsites have shade. Dogs are allowed only in the campground. All sites are available by reservation. (First-come walk-up sites are no longer available.)

Potable water spigots are shared, there are two bath houses with hot showers a short walk from all sites and a single dump station is positioned near the campground exit.

Alexander Springs camping is $31 a night plus tax.(2022) Reservations may be made by phone at 1-877-444-6777 or online at recreation.gov up to six months in advance.

Silver Springs kayak rentals

Manatee Tours!  In the winter months November through February, the manatees migrate to the springs to stay warm. The water temperature in the spring stays 72 degrees year-round, so on the cold winter days, there will be numerous manatees in the spring. Manatees can not survive very long in waters colder than 68 degrees. During the spring and summer, there are resident manatees that live here. Getting out in the water early is always better to see tons of wildlife.

Silver Springs Kayaking

Silver Springs Kayaking

Abundant Florida wildlife  can all be seen here, including possible sightings of manatees, magnificent marsh birds, alligators, and wild rhesus macaque Monkeys. Silver Springs famous history includes Tarzan and several Hollywood movies that were filmed here. Silver Springs State Park is located at 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd. Silver Springs Fl. 34488

It’s a Wild Life!

Kayaking Silver Springs is like traveling back in time. There is so much history to be seen and learned here. Silver Springs became very popular after the Civil War. The Silver Springs attraction began in the late 1870s and was the first tourist attraction in Florida. The Florida state park system took over the attraction in 2013. In 1971 the river was designated a natural national landmark. The park is over 5000 acres with an improved and widen kayaking launch , several hiking trails and bicycling areas as well as equestrian trails and a museum. Camping is by reservation only.

The raw beauty of the Silver River is unlike any other in Florida, and what better way to experience it, than with a kayaking tour. Wildlife is at almost every turn, and old props from attractions dating back to the 1930s,s are still standing along the beautiful Kings Trail which harbors a replica of Fort King, named after Colonel William King, commander of Florida’s fourth infantry and the first governor of the provisional West Florida region. The original Fort King located just a few miles down the road, was eventually turned into the court house for Ocala. A town was born!

Silver Springs Kayaking with Manatees!

The mammoth spring of Silver Springs is a first-magnitude spring, which means that it pumps out a minimum of one hundred cubic feet per second. The springs watershed is roughly 1,700.square miles, or about 1 million acres. Silver Springs is the largest spring formation in the world, capable of pumping 500 million gallons of water a day. Hollywood movies and series relics can be seen throughout our kayak tours and kayak rental routes.

These are just a few of the fun facts that our kayaking tour touches base on. So come on, sit back and enjoy the natural wonder of Silver Springs with an amazing kayak tour or rental.

The Monkeys of Silver Springs

Silver Springs Kayaking

Monkey Business!

Silver Springs is one of the few places in Florida where Rhesus Macaque monkeys live wild along the shoreline. These monkeys were introduced by a concessionaire to highlight his very popular jungle cruise back in the mid 1930’s. They were put on an Island named Cypress Island, and the concessionaire was going to call it Monkey Island. What he did not know is the monkeys were excellent swimmers, and quickly swam away. They can now be seen throughout the park and the Ocklawaha river basin.

TOP-RATED SILVER SPRINGS KAYAK TOURS ★★★★★

Testimonial Kayak Icon

Such an amazing experience! So relaxing to get out of the “busy vacation rush” and go on this trip. It 100% exceeded my expectations. The water was absolutely gorgeous and we saw a lot of wild life! At least 15 monkeys, tons of turtles and fish. The guide was so kind and knowledgeable. The tours are small so you don’t feel crammed together or in anyone’s space. It’s very affordable and I felt like I was in a tropical country with silver sands and blue waters- so it’s so worth it.

Sam was our tour guide and he was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He made our tour fun and interesting. We went on the morning tour and it was the best time to go. There was only one other kayaker with us and the setting was peaceful and serene. We saw many animals including monkeys, alligators, turtles, and many different species of birds!! The tour was very relaxing and tranquil. We really enjoyed it! I definitely would recommend the early morning tour!

I highly recommend this tour if you are interested in Wildlife and want to take a few hours relaxing on the water. Our tour guide he was amazing- such a lovely chilled out guy, very friendly, obviously loved his job and was very knowledgeable. He took a large group out in the clear kayaks we felt safe the whole time. The ride was not strenuous and the equipment was very easy to use. I would most definitely do this again the next time I am in Florida!

When everyone passing you in canoes, kayaks, and on paddle boats says "oh man, a clear kayak, that would be the way to do this", you know you're doing it right! Silver Springs is absolutely beautiful and having a clear kayak allows you to take it all in. The team at Get Up And Go Kayaking is professional, timely, and patient. Our guide shared the history of the area, did an excellent job of pointing out the wildlife. We would definitely recommend Get Up And Go Kayaking!

This was so beautiful & relaxing! We saw gators, lots of turtles and various birds and we learned a lot about the wildlife. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the springs. I would definitely recommend this activity for both local Floridians and for visitors. If you love the outdoors, you'll enjoy this. We had never kayaked this river before. but now this is something we'll plan to do whenever we have out-of-town visitors! Highly recommend to anyone!

Florida springs can help you beat the heat. Locations, hours, price and everything else you need to know

State’s natural freshwater sources offer great way to cool down during summer.

Kendal Asbury , Digital Intern

Florida’s brutal heat is nothing new. We are all used to the “feels like” temperature often being over 100 degrees.

One of the best ways to cool down during the blaring summer months is diving one of the state’s natural resources: freshwater springs. These natural water sources are typically colder than pools and even the ocean, making them a refreshing experience.

There are several freshwater springs across Central Florida that provide a great way to beat the heat with your family. Most just require a low-cost admission fee to enter the parks they reside in. Whether you want to swim, boat, kayak, fish or simply spend time near the water, there is bound to be a place for you.

In Central Florida counties

Wekiwa Springs State Park

Wekiwa Springs is a crystal-clear water spring in Orange County that remains a refreshing temperature of 72 degrees all year. Apart from swimming, there are canoes and kayaks available to rent on-site. There are also places to relax by the water or have a picnic, along with a campground for those wanting to spend more time in the park.

Wekiwa Springs also consists of several miles of nature trails to be explored, and it is highly likely visitors will spot wildlife.

  • Location: 1800 Wekiwa Circle in Apopka.
  • Hours: 8 a.m. until sundown.
  • Admission: $6 per vehicle.

Blue Spring State Park

Blue Spring State Park is a nature preserve and freshwater spring located in Volusia County along the St. Johns River that stays in the low 70s all year round. Enjoy crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving to explore the extensive underwater cave system.

There are also camping areas that offer the option to stay at the park, along with a half-mile boardwalk that runs along the bank and features panoramic views or picturesque “old Florida” and displays that chronicle the history of the natural area. During the winter, Blue Spring is a popular gathering area for manatees.

The spring is closed, effective April 1, for in-water activities for construction projects.

  • Location: 2100 W. French Ave. in Orange City.

Rainbow Springs State Park

Rainbow Springs State Park is home to the headspring of the Rainbow River. This park in Marion County, which used to be a family-owned attraction until it became a part of the state park system, is known for its lush gardens, constructed waterfalls and sloping hills.

Swimmers can enjoy a large roped-off area for swimming at the main park spring that resembles the crystal-clear nature of a pool, as the white sandy bottom lies between areas of smooth limestone. There are also tubes, canoes and kayaks available to rent for further water-based entertainment.

  • Location: 19158 SW 81st Place Road in Dunnellon.
  • Admission: Entry to the springs is $2 a person, with children 6 and under are free.

Silver Springs State Park

Silver Springs State Park is one of the largest springs in the U.S. and home to the famous glass bottom boat tours.

While you cannot swim in these springs, it’s very popular for kayaking, hiking, camping and biking. There is also a bit of history to check out! Don’t miss out on the Silver River Museum and Environmental Educational Center, where you can check out exhibits on geology, paleontology, archaeology and natural history of north Central Florida.

  • Location: 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd, Silver Springs, FL 34488
  • Admission: $8 per vehicle.

De Leon Springs State Park

De Leon Springs State Park is a refreshing spring that offers opportunities for swimming and fishing located in west Volusia County. It is a great spot to cool off in clear waters or explore nature trails that wind through a lush, subtropical forest that features a massive old-growth bald cypress tree.

The park’s signature restaurant, the Old Sugar Mill Pancake House , is a great breakfast spot for families, and you can make your own pancakes right at your table. There are additionally boat tours that immerse visitors in the rich history and ecology of the protected area.

  • Location: 601 Ponce De Leon Blvd. in De Leon Springs.

Rock Springs at Kelly Park

Rock Springs is a crystal-clear natural spring encompassed by lush greenery at Kelly Park , a natural gem operated by Orange County. This park offers a great spot to swim, canoe, kayak or paddleboard in the cool waterway, though there are no rentals available on-site.

This park also has several nature trails and a campground for those interested in immersing themselves in the vibrant, natural environment that surrounds the springs.

  • Location: 400 E Kelly Park Road in Apopka.
  • Hours: Dawn to dusk.
  • Admission: $3 per vehicle for 1-2 people; $5 per vehicle for 3-8 people; and $1 for additional person/walk-ins/motorcycles/bikes.

In the Ocala National Forest

Juniper Springs

Juniper Springs and the surrounding recreation area is one of the most popular destinations in the Ocala National Forest. The crystalline water of the headspring allows for swimming, canoeing and snorkeling, with the adjacent Juniper Springs Run being considered one of Florida’s most scenic kayak excursions.

There are additional opportunities for hiking, birding and wildlife viewing in the deeply shaded, lush natural areas surrounding the limestone-enveloped spring.

  • Location: 26701 E Highway 40 in Silver Springs.
  • Hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Admission: $13 a person.

Silver Glen Springs
