Josh Groban ready to 'smell the roses' on his 'Harmony' tour after fighting COVID-19

harmony tour josh groban

After he "outran it for so long," COVID-19 finally came for Josh Groban.

The Grammy-winning singer told the Journal Sentinel , part of the USA TODAY Network, in an interview Monday that he and his family tested positive five days prior, after being "so hyper careful" since the pandemic began.

"It hit me hard, and then I said, 'Take a hike,'" Groban, 41, said from his home over the phone as he prepared some tea. "I've got more of a chest cold. ... I've been singing in my apartment and have no issues with breath control."

Groban's family, too, is OK, he said. And fortunately for Groban and his fans, the COVID case didn't happen in the midst of a tour. He'll be all clear and ready to go for a 27-city North American run, his first since 2018, that kicks off Friday in Detroit.

"It's something we've all been looking forward to for a really, really long time, for our mental health, for our connectivity," Groban said. "People need to get out and experience music and art and experience each other. ... I feel like everywhere you go people are on edge, like they have lost their vitality. It'll be a slow climb getting back to that."

'I should have had a shrink then': Josh Groban on becoming famous so young

When routing the tour, Groban and his team opted for outdoor venues, because the COVID-19 situation "felt like a moving target."

"My lungs are my job and my parents are in their seventies," said Groban, who still wears a mask to shows and museums. He is vaccinated and boosted. "It's vitally important to make the most educated risks as possible to make sure we can all still thrive as a society."

"And some of the best times we've had on the road have been at beautiful outdoor sheds," Groban said. "There's nothing better than music under the stars."

The chance to play live is especially sweet for Groban, because he wasn't sure if he'd have the chance to tour behind his latest album, "Harmony," released in November 2020.

"These are songs that I've wanted to sing my entire life," Groban said of his ninth studio album, which includes his interpretations of songs from Elvis Presley , Frank Sinatra, Bonnie Raitt, Sting, Joni Mitchell and others. "Some of the songs had such a poignant meaning.

More: Joni Mitchell makes emotional return to the stage at MusiCares pre-Grammys tribute

"These were the songs we were recording, the soundtrack that was keeping my head sane, during these awful months. To be out in beautiful settings, singing songs I didn't know would be sung at all (live), is really cathartic."

Beyond playing selections from "Harmony," Groban is looking forward to sharing stages with local orchestras and opening acts Eleri Ward ("an incredible singer-songwriter") and pride of New Orleans the Preservation Hall Jazz Band ("a soul recharge in a band"). The "Harmony Tour" also will feature the return of singer and violinist Lucia Micarelli, who hasn't toured with Groban since the "Awake Tour" in 2007.

Groban said he's determined to "let myself smell the roses even more" on this tour.

"As somebody who has been really having to hit my marks since I was 17 years old and having definite objectives I need to accomplish … I'm trying to have a little bit of an out-of-body experience."

"You don't know how you're going to feel until it's taken away," he continued. "To have a chance to make music again for fans takes on a deeper meaning"

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- Certain notes, when played together, sound simply beautiful.

It’s what a musician would call harmony.

Josh Groban’s show at Blossom Music Center on Wednesday night created exactly that-- fitting as ‘Harmony’ is the title of his summer tour, along with his latest album.

Sailing through a set of 17 songs, Groban seamlessly created a show for all audiences, his bold baritone navigating its way through moods, styles and genres all evening.

Opening with Frank Sinatra’s 1967 brooding hit, “The World We Knew,” there was no knowing what kind of song Groban would sing next.

All knew, however, it would be taken care of with Groban’s simultaneously soft, sharp and sultry vocal.

Dancing from album to album, decade to decade and genre to genre, Groban started the show covering such artists as Sting, Charles Aznavour and Robbie Williams, managing to make each song unmistakably his own. He shared the credit, too, giving a shoutout to the great arrangers he’s worked with over the years.

Groban then turned to his own originals as he hit the piano while singing, thanking his mother for sparking his musical creativity by simply having one in his childhood home.

Mixed in through his set was Groban’s awkward-yet-endearing humor.

A baby in the audience was the subject of most of Groban’s laughs, as the singer revealed his jealousy for the baby’s vocal stamina as it screamed off and on throughout the show.

While Groban’s quirkiness might find him far from suave, his vocals were as smooth as that baby’s bottom and remained so throughout the evening.

After showing off his own brilliant talent for a handful of numbers, Groban brought renowned violinist, Lucia Micarelli to the stage. She ripped through a classical solo on her violin before lending her smoky voice to blend with Groban on Joni Mitchell’s ballad, “Both Sides Now.”

Soon after, Groban surprised the audience and whipped into a frenzy on a drumset brought out mid-song by stagehands, creating quite a roar from the Cuyahoga Falls crowd.

Groban then introduced Eleri Ward-- an up-and-coming artist who was Groban’s first opening act of the evening-- to duet with him on ‘Not While I’m Around’ from the musical, “Sweeney Todd.”

Truly the harmonious moment of the evening, Ward’s exquisite tone lent itself perfectly to Groban’s sound as the two complemented each other note for note, their voices blending perfectly to the last note of the ballad.

Following a Spanish-translated performance of Celine Dion’s ‘Just Walk Away,’ and an original composition helped by legendary gospel choir director and singer Kirk Franklin titled, ‘The Fullest,’ Groban reflected on the journey it’s been to get back to live performance, showing his gratitude to frontline workers and all how have strived to keep us safe through the last few years.

As the evening came to a close, Groban invited the audience to sing along to his most famous hit, ‘You Raise Me Up,’ revealing that he only grows more fond of the song as the years go on as opposed to getting sick of it.

Lights from phones spread throughout the venue as Groban’s velvety vocals soared through the summer sky, raising the mood, or at least the emotional level, of all in attendance.

For one last song for the road, Groban invoked a powerful balled from ‘Man of La Mancha’ titled, ‘The Impossible Dream.’ Lights shone like stars from the stage onto the audience as Groban nailed each note of the rangy classic, sending off the audience with love and and light.

Prior to Groban’s warm, eclectic performance, Ward beautifully and effortlessly took over the crowd.

With nothing but an acoustic guitar in her lap, Ward’s effervescent, powerful voice covered Sondheim originals including “Johanna” and “Send in the Clowns” with tender grace, before giving way to the six-piece Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Bringing the soul of the bayou to Ohio, the energetic jazz sextet blew through the Blossom roof — well, overhang — with classics such as St. Louis Blues and a “When The Saints Go Marching In” and “You Are My Sunshine” medley, leaving with a standing ovation from the audience.

No matter your age or musical preference, the evening was an enjoyable one, as each act blended together in perfect — you guessed it — harmony.

The best part of a Josh Groban concert (it isn’t the singing)

It may be odd to suggest that the best part of a groban concert isn’t the singing. but here’s a case for it.

Singer Josh Groban performs at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City.

By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson

On a bleak Friday afternoon in March, when the COVID-19 pandemic was in its infancy, Josh Groban put on a little concert from his home .

The video and audio quality weren’t great. But in between songs, through his dirty computer lens, Groban proudly showed his fans a framed photo of his dog, Sweeney, talked to his fans about the seriousness of COVID-19, encouraged fans who may be feeling lonely to seek help and even apologized for the plain gray wall behind him.

“Somebody just said the audio sounds like I’m down in a well,” Groban said with a laugh as he started reading the comments that flooded the Facebook livestream.

Eventually, he picked up his laptop, walked to the bathroom and took advantage of the shower acoustics to sing “You Raise Me Up.” And then, after sharing a message of encouragement with the 3,500 fans who were watching live, he said goodbye.

“Hope we can do this in person sometime again really, really soon.”

A little over two years later, Groban is back on the road.

He’s more dressed up now. He’s backed by a full band, orchestra and choir, performing songs from his album, “ Harmony ,” which he released in November 2020 (in case you’re wondering, he does not recommend putting out an album “smack dab in the middle of a global medical emergency”).

Wednesday night’s show at Salt Lake City’s Vivint Arena was a substantially glossier production than Groban’s shower singalong during the early days of COVID-19, but one crucial element remained unchanged: the singer’s approachability.

harmony tour josh groban

In an arena that can seat up to 20,000 people for concerts, Groban seemed intent on being as accessible to his fans as he was singing through his laptop at home. On the large stage, the singer was poised as he performed everything from 2006’s “February Song” to material from the new album, determined to let each baritone note ring loud and clear. But in between numbers, he went at a frenetic pace as he chatted with his fans, sometimes getting ahead of himself and stumbling over his words. It was as if he was catching up with a friend he hadn’t seen in years.

And in a way, that really was the case.

A lot has happened since Groban’s last Salt Lake City show in 2018. Before the pandemic, he was about a third of the way through recording “Harmony,” which he originally envisioned as an album of all covers — a tribute to classic songs he loved like Kenny Loggins’ “Celebrate Me Home” and Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” But as he hunkered down at home, with more time on his hands than he’d had in a while, he experienced a musical awakening of sorts. He found himself creating.

Now, once again at the arena where he filmed his “Awake Live” TV special in 2007, Groban was visibly eager to let his fans in on the stories behind some of his newer music as well as the longtime hits. He’s a fast talker and a descriptive storyteller, and while there isn’t data to back this up, there’s a good chance he spoke more words than he sang.

Before singing his cover of Robbie Williams’ “ Angels ,” featured on his new album, Groban enthusiastically recounted the moment a bouquet of flowers — five dozen white roses — arrived on his doorstep, with a little note of gratitude from Williams. After gushing over the intricacies of the note — which was signed with not one, but two “XOs” — Groban ultimately and somewhat begrudgingly concluded that the gesture likely came from Williams’ management.

harmony tour josh groban

Before launching into “ February Song ,” he shared how he wrote it a few years into his stardom, when he felt overwhelmed by the pressures of the industry, and all of the perpetual praise and criticism that surrounded him.

In between his songs, he talked about mental health, influential teachers and the value of arts education. He encouraged parents to facilitate their kids’ passions. When he saw a “My First Concert” sign in the crowd, he noted that his first concert was New Kids on the Block in the third grade — a Christmas show that featured Donnie Wahlberg breakdancing in a Santa suit.

Some artists take the stage solely to perform. Fans pay good money to hear them sing, and that’s what they’re going to do. But Groban puts continual effort into forming a connection with his fans, crafting stories and painting as vivid a picture through his words as he does through song.

Of course, there’d be nothing wrong if he just came out and sang. He has an angelic voice that has attracted millions of fans, and it was clear from the start of Wednesday’s show — when he opened with a cover of Frank Sinatra’s “ The World We Knew (Over and Over)” — that his voice was in top form. But it’s this additional layer of entertainment — Groban’s sincere, sometimes awkward but always endearing down-to-earth rambling — that draws his fans in even more.

harmony tour josh groban

It may be odd to suggest that the best part of a Groban concert isn’t the singing. But here’s a case for it: You can listen to him sing anytime on the radio, on YouTube, on Spotify, you name it. But it’s in person, after you hear his heartfelt stories and messages, that those songs become even more powerful.

Groban talks with the same sense of hope and optimism that permeates his music, using his voice in more ways than one to do what he’s been singing about for nearly 20 years: to raise people up.

With a 'refreshed sense of purpose' Josh Groban kicks off Harmony tour. See dates

Josh Groban is a decorated singer, a songwriter, an actor. But what's most important to him, he said, is that he's a uniter.

And as he steps out onto the road for his Harmony Summer 2022 tour in a world navigating how to live with COVID and dealing with an immense amount of trauma and division, he said it's with fresh eyes.

"We're all going out there with an enormous amount of gratitude that we get to do this for a living," he said. "I get to sing and express myself as a job, which is already the most therapeutic thing, but especially in these times. In a world that is this divided, I get to be a connector in my job. I feel really, really fortunate for that ... I think we're all stepping forward with a refreshed sense of purpose, and I think that's a good thing."

Area "Harmony" tour dates include: The Darien Lake Amphitheater in Darien, N.Y., on Friday, July 1; the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Saturday, July 2; the Bethel Woods Center For the Arts in Bethel, N.Y., on Tuesday, July 5; the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y., on Friday, July 8; the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel on Saturday, July 9; and the Mann Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 12.

Groban had a " pretty bad bout of COVID" right before rehearsals were supposed to start.

"I've outrun it now for a long time and got all my boosters and wore my mask.

" When I prepare for a tour, it's like preparing for a marathon. You're preparing your whole body for what it's going to go through over the next many months."

Creating the sense of community and enjoyment that music provides is an avenue not only to recover, but to honor those lost.

"I think we have to find silver linings," he said. "I think to not find silver linings at the end of trauma is for it to be in vain. As you pick up the pieces and as you mourn, you also need to find those things that have been learned and learned in a positive way ...

"You honor the people that have suffered by holding onto the things that are good lessons: having perspective, focusing on the things that are important to us, the simple things that are important to us, the people, what we like to do, having vitality in our life."

Groban's "Harmony" album, released in 2020 (a deluxe version was released last year), features covers and original music — and looks a lot different than it did when he started working on it pre-pandemic.

"This album was definitely having to ride those waves of all the different conflicting emotions that were happening during the making of it," he said.

Songs were cut and added many times over.

"I remember hearing arrangements and singing demos and trying to get vocals in my bedroom and all these other things," he said. "It's a very powerful thing to be in front of an audience now singing them because we made the album at a time where being in front of people was not possible. And now I'm singing the songs in front of all of these thousands of people and it's very emotional."

The meanings and moments behind the songs runs deep.

" 'The World We Knew' — which we're opening the show with —  all of a sudden I'm listening to that. First of all the vocal was just like, 'I want to try and tackle this. It's so rich, it's so cool.' But it was not a song that I would normally have been like 'I have to cover this song.' But it represented lyrically the idea of going back to a more simple time and connecting with somebody you love during an innocent time."

He said he was "terrified" of covering "Both Sides Now" on the album, a duet with Sara Bareilles, because of the definitive versions recorded by Joni Mitchell.

"But Sara ... and I looked at each other and said this is the right time for a song about perspective, (so) let's do it. And it continues to be really, really powerful for us."

Groban said he had been considering "The Impossible Dream" from "Man of La Mancha" for a long time, and was mulling holding it for a future fully musical theater album.

"But the message of stepping forward in the face of all the walls that are put up in front of you, all of a sudden it's never been more powerful," he said. "I will never feel it as deeply as I feel the song right now. And so we had to do it."

Groban has always been drawn to musical theater, planning to study it before his solo performing career took off. He made his Broadway debut in 2016's "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812," and has made guest appearances in "Freestyle Love Supreme."

"The incredible thing about these songs is that you can listen to them in the scope of sitting and watching a three-hour show, and it's something within that longer arc and that really, really carries the story, and it can be a great puzzle piece within a bigger picture," he said.

"And then the amazing things about the songs is that when you take them out of context of the show, and then you just sing them on their own, they then became become a puzzle piece of the much bigger picture of just your life."

He said he'd love to make a return to Broadway.

"Oh, there's no question I'll be back on Broadway," he said. "It's a matter of when and what. It's such a commitment that so many things have to fall into place in order for it to be right, but I definitely hope before too long it will happen."

UNCASVILLE, Connecticut — Josh Groban’s summer “Harmony” tour doesn’t kick off until June 17 in Detroit, but fans got a preview of what to expect during a performance on Sunday at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Groban, like other artists, curtailed live concerts when the pandemic began in March 2020. The 27-city tour will be his first since his most recent album, “Harmony,” was released in November 2020.

“It’s nice to be back,” Groban told the near-capacity crowd at the 10,000-seat arena. “We are filled to the brim with gratitude.”

He kicked off his 15-song set with a trio of numbers from “Harmony, beginning with a masterful cover of “The World We Knew (Over and Over),” a track first introduced by Frank Sinatra in 1967.

Groban followed with Robbie Williams’ ”Angels,” which he dedicated to frontline workers, and Sting’s “Shape of My Heart.”

He revisited his 2015 album “Stages” with a winning performance of “Pure Imagination” from the 1971 film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.”

Taking his seat at the piano, Groban, 41, sang a pair of his own compositions, “Granted” and “February Song.”

Blessed with one of the finest voices in music (and a quirky sense of humor), Groban knows how to charm an audience — whether it is stopping the show to sign an autograph for Betty, a fan celebrating her 95th birthday, or staging a mock wedding toast and performance for audience members Hailey and Andrew to film and use at their wedding next year.

Noting he has a “voice for melancholy,” Groban tugged at the heartstrings with a moving “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” (”I like the sad songs,” he noted. “It works for Adele.”

But the emotional highpoint of the night came with a performance of “Bring Him Home” from the Broadway hit “Les Miserables,” which Groban dedicated to the people of Ukraine. It earned him his first standing ovation of the night.

He closed the evening with his signature, Celtic-tinged “You Raise Me Up” before returning to the stage to perform a powerful version of “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha.”

Groban will play a three-night stint at Radio City Music Hall in New York beginning Thursday. His summer tour includes a July 6 performance at the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston.

Josh Groban: Harmony Tour at Shoreline Amphitheatre

“After far too long feeling torn away from my favorite part of my musical life, live performance, it is with huge excitement and gratitude to announce that I’ll be back doing what I do best and love most with the Harmony Tour,” said Groban. “It will be more than a concert for me…it will be a celebration of connection with my friends, fans and colleagues who have been my anchors during the last couple of years and during the course of my career. I hope you’ll join us for these beautiful nights of music.”

Harmony, was released in November 2020, debuting at number 17 on the Billboard 200 chart. It is his most pop-directed record, drawing a lot of influence from late-20th-century pop, with Kenny Loggins, Robbie Williams, Sting, and the monarch of elegant pop, Joni Mitchell. The new songs are well orchestrated, with a few surprising touches, like a tropical-flavored cover of the Elvis Presley hit “It’s Now or Never.” Compared to past records, Groban uses high notes sparingly, and as a result, more effectively.

About Preservation Hall Jazz Band At a moment when musical streams are crossing with unprecedented frequency, it’s crucial to remember that throughout its history, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge, mingle, and resurface, transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history.

PHJB marches that tradition forward once again on So It Is, the septet’s second release featuring all-new original music. The album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport, including legends like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.

About Lucia Micarelli A superb classical musician, Lucia is recognized throughout the world for being a featured soloist with Josh Groban, Chris Botti, Jethro Tull, and also for her starring role on the critically acclaimed HBO series Treme. Since then, Lucia’s profile has continued to soar. In 2018, Lucia appeared in her first PBS concert special, which aired throughout the US and spawned a live album.  In 2020, Lucia joined the Hallmark Family and starred in the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries holiday movie The Christmas Bow.  Having been influenced by her experience on Treme, she’s absorbed many types of musical styles and has since added singing to her repertoire.  This ability to combine these diverse influences allow her to move from classical, to jazz, to traditional fiddle music and Americana, while creating a musical map unlike anything heard before from a violinist - all bound together by her trademark emotional vulnerability and technical wizardry.

About Eleri Ward Eleri Ward is a New York City-based actor, singer, and musician. In 2021, she recorded and produced her full-length indie-folk Sondheim album, "A Perfect Little Death," in her closet. After gaining a viral TikTok following, it was released by Ghostlight Records and has been hailed as “a harmonious marriage of musical theater and indie folk music, with hauntingly beautiful arrangements” by Forbes and “an incandescent new record, something genuinely new” from American Theater Magazine. Her original pop music has been called “soaring” (Nexus Music Blog), “astonishing” (Rising Artists), and “dreamy” (Neon Music). Her most recent pop EP, "Friction," was released in 2021. Eleri has been singing and acting since she was eight years old and has always strived to carve out her own space with the uniqueness she brings to the theater. She studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music before transferring and graduating from The Boston Conservatory with a BFA in Musical Theater and an emphasis in Songwriting, which shows itself clearly in the way she has taken on the Sondheim canon. www.eleriward.com @eleriward

Josh Groban to Host Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2024 Gala, Which Will Toast Late Legend Tony Bennett

On Monday (March 24), Jazz at Lincoln Center revealed the host for its upcoming all-star tribute to late legend Tony Bennett , which doubles as the center's annual gala fundraiser. Tony-nominated, Billboard 200-topping singer and actor Josh Groban is set to host the April 17 even at the Frederick P. Rose Hall in Manhattan's Lincoln Center.

The evening, titled Celebrating Tony Bennett, will honor the jazz vocal great and raise money for Jazz at Lincoln Center, with items from Tony Bennett's personal collection being auctioned off. Wynton Marsalis, managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, will lead the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra throughout the evening, with Rubén Blades, Bernadette Peters, Kristin Chenoweth, Norm Lewis, Kurt Elling, Ekep Nkwelle, Robbie Lee and Shenel Johns providing vocal performances. Jazz pianist Bill Charlap will also perform, in addition to receiving an award for artistic excellence. Tim Jackson, former artistic director of the Monterey Jazz Festival, and Randall Kline, founder of SFJAZZ, will receive the Ed Bradley award for leadership in jazz at the April 17 gala. You can get more information about the gala celebration at the organization's website .

Over the course of his impossibly long career, Tony Bennett helped define what it meant to be an interpreter of the Great American Songbook, connecting jazz, pop, Broadway and Tin Pan Alley with his elegant, smooth phrasing. Working with jazz giants from Count Basie to Bill Evans, Bennett continued to deliver gold during the last decade of his career, recording two jazz-inflected albums with Lady Gaga ( Cheek to Cheek in 2014; Love for Sale in 2021) and one with Diana Krall ( Love Is Here to Stay in 2018) before passing away at the age of 96 in July 2023 . Although he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2016, Bennett continued to perform and release music until 2021, wrapping his touring career with a concert at Radio City Music Hall alongside collaborator and devotee Lady Gaga in August 2021.
