MAGHERAMORNE QUARRY

game of thrones studio tour dublin

This location was used for many scenes in  Game of Thrones  including the defences of  Castle Black during the battle of Blackwater Bay , Hardhome and the Wall.

There is no public access to the quarry but the location was used extensively in season 8 when a  massive green screen  was erected and many of  the final season’s  battle scenes were shot there.

game of thrones studio tour dublin

The quaint seaside town of Carnlough was known in the series as the  free city of Braavos . Arya finds Jaqen H’ghar here and learns how to become an assassin.

In season 6, when she is attacked by the waif from the fearless men, Arya drags herself up the iconic steps of Carnlough Harbour to reach safety. We’ll pass these steps and learn about the most iconic GOT moments that have happened here — a must-see spot on any Game of Thrones Tour in Ireland.

CUSHENDUN CAVES

game of thrones studio tour dublin

The picturesque village of Cushendun, along the Causeway Coastal Route, is an important  Game of Thrones’ filming location in Ireland . The wild coastline serves as the background for  ships sailing from Westeros  in the series and, if you venture slightly farther, you’ll find the caves where  Melisandre gives birth to a murderous shadow baby in season 2 . This is also where Jamie Lannister has his last fight on his failed attempt to save Cersei in Game of Thrones Season 8

LARRYBANE QUARRY

game of thrones studio tour dublin

Larrybane Limestone Quarry plays a big role in season 2 and 6 of Game of Thrones.

It is the  location of Renly Baratheon’s camp in season 2 , and the place where Brienne of Tarth proves herself in single combat against Ser Loras of the Flowers. But that’s not all. Much has happened in this limestone quarry: Littlefinger sought out Catelyn Stark who arrived to negotiate with King Renly; and when Euron realises that his niece and nephew have stolen his ships, Rathlin island provides the perfect backdrop for his escaping fleet!

FULLERTON (LUNCH STOP)

game of thrones studio tour dublin

Next, we’ll stop at The Fullerton Arms, a hotel in which many of the cast have stayed while filming. The hotel not only serves good food but also boasts a themed dining room with its very own  Iron Throne . Pose for a photo and then stop to admire door 6, a beautiful piece made from a tree from the Dark Hedges and dedicated to Drogon, Denaerys’ favourite dragon.

game of thrones studio tour dublin

The small town of Ballintoy, close to the Giant’s Causeway on the North Antrim coast, is used for exterior shots of  Pyke, capital of the Iron Islands . It is here where Theon Greyjoy returns from Winterfell to start negotiations with his father Balon. As this region is difficult to access, we’ll enjoy a quiet tour away from large coaches. Explore the area and, as you look out over the ocean, imagine embarking on a quest to rival those of the series.

GIANT’S CAUSEWAY

game of thrones studio tour dublin

This unique attraction is the  only UNESCO world heritage site in Northern Ireland . 50 to 60 million years ago, a volcanic eruption under the sea caused rapid cooling of the Basalt lava, leaving 40,000 interlocking basalt columns up to 12 metres high. You cannot afford to miss a visit the  Giant’s Causeway  while in Ireland.

DUNLUCE CASTLE

game of thrones studio tour dublin

Next stop is the  House of Greyjoy ! Dunluce Castle was built by the McQuillan family around 1500. It is located on the top of sheer-sided cliffs 100 feet above the ocean – the  perfect location for one of the Great Houses of Westeros . The Castle’s dramatic history of violence, intrigue and rebellion is matched by the  scandal and betrayal committed by the Greyjoys in Game of Thrones .

DARK HEDGES

game of thrones studio tour dublin

The Stuart family planted this beautiful avenue of beech trees in the 18th century. They couldn’t have known the worldwide interest their now-famous beech trees would achieve. More than two centuries later, they starred as the  King’s Road  in Game of Thrones.

  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Rosemary ★★★★★ in the last week During our stay in Dublin we took two of Wild Rover's Tours. They were both extremely organized and the guides and drivers were all amazing. I can't say enough good things about these tours. They maximize the trip so you get the most out of your time. The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. Both of our bus drivers were extremely safe drivers. The buses were clean, comfortable and … More had USB plugs easily accessible. Before we booked the tours we sent a few inquiry emails which were answered very promptly. Everything was amazing from start to finish. A bit about our Tours - The Cliffs of Moher, Atlantic Edge Ocean Walk & Galway (Rory was our tour guide & Brian was our Bus Driver) - This was SOOOOOOOO well worth it. The Cliffs were superb and you have 2 hours to explore them. The Atlantic Edge Ocean had amazing views and the countryside we drove through was picturesque. In Galway we walked to Merchant Row and had a lovely lunch at the Kings Head (this was one of the recommendations Rory gave us and it did not disappoint.) Rory was funny, charming and balanced our tour time with history, funny antidotes and was so helpful at every opportunity. Brian was a great driver and I felt completely safe in his care. Our second tour was - Giants Causeway & Belfast City Day (Barbara was our guide & John was our bus driver) - What a lovely day. If your a GoT fan, you will get to see several locations used in the show. You will have a choice to go to the Titanic Museum or the Black Cab Tours (I highly recommend the Taxi tours). The locations were amazing, the scenery was lovely and we had more than enough time at each of the locations. Barbara was fun and played a lot of music which certainly got us into the mood at each place we went to. She answered a lot of questions and John even spoke Gaelic for us! He was a great and safe driver.
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ 3 weeks ago Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • Marine MALINGUE ★★★★★ 3 days ago Really nice experience I truly recommend it! Peter, our driver offered us a safe trip and Ian our guide was very nice and friendly, I particularly appreciated Glendalough and the sheperd demonstration which was a very good surprise! You can buy something to eat during your stop at Kilkenny and there are many opportunities to go to wasrooms during the excursion, everything is perfectly organise and … More you really have enough time at each place you visit! It definitely worth the price!
  • Brenda Burrows ★★★★★ a week ago We went on the Giant’s Causeway and Titanic museum tour and can thoroughly recommend it. Great driver (Krishnan) and excellent tour guide (Una). Good mix of Irish history, folk lore and culture served up with humour and practical tips. Beautiful coastal scenery.
  • Sara Mouyass ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago Absolutely informative and lovely tour to the Cliffs of Moher! Both our driver and guide were really nice people, and respectful of our morning tiredness! Our guide, Yvonne, gave absolutely useful and historical info as well as fun stories/facts when that was needed. I'd recommend Wild Rover anytime if you'd like to spend an amazing journey across Ireland! 😊 Thank you!
  • Helen Lim ★★★★★ a week ago Thank you very much to Dave and Marko for a fantastic Dramatic Day Tour to North Ireland (from Dublin) to Titanic Experience at Belfast, Dulunce Castle and Giant's Causeway which allowed me to tick off my bucket list. Although this is a long day trip, it is worth every minute for around 2 hours at the UNESCO World heritage Giants Causeway which is an ancient creation around 60 million years ago, … More created by volcanic fissure eruptions which layered the surrounding area with 40,000 interlocking basaltic columns. It is mind boggling and magical to be able to scramble over and explore such a natural phenomenon. Do tread carefully as the basalt columns are uneven and slippery. We took the Red trail which overlooks the polygonal column formations, and midway turn left to some stone stairs which lead you down to the hexagonal shaped basaltic columns by the coast. This route is around 40 minutes one way. Then you can walk back up 15 mins by the easier Blue trail. You can opt to pay EUR1.20 or GBP1 to take the shuttle bus back up, which runs every 20 minutes. Go early to the Tour meet up venue before 6:45am as they let early birds queue up for their seats (except for 1st 2 rows reserved for elderly and pregnant guests). The lovely scenic atrim coast ride is spectacularly scenic. Dave is a humorous guide who explained about the sites, and joked, and kindly helped to take a few pictures, for us. The historical 500 years old Dunluce Castle remnants (set against a steep cliffside of the North Atlantic ocean) also make for gorgeous photographs. The Titanic Experience is a 2 hour interactive and immersive time, in a modern and expensive building. Marko is a safe and efficient driver. Highly recommended great Day Tour, to make new friends from other countries. We were blessed with mostly sunny / a tad cloudy but no rain weather. Kindly tip your guide and driver generously please. Helen
  • Chang Liu ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago We did the Cliffs of Moher and Galway tour with Kiera and had the best time. Kiera was simply one of the best tour guides we’ve ever had! She explained the Irish history so thoroughly and clearly; she might as well be a history professor! She’s also very funny and so, so friendly. All the shops and restaurants she recommended in Galway were spot on. The tour’s organization was quite smooth and we can’t … More complain a thing. Highly recommend wild rover tours.
  • Michelle Calheiros ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago I went to Ireland in April '24 and booked two day tours leaving from Dublin; one to the Cliffs and another to Wicklow. Both tours were amazing, truly! I never really leave reviews but felt compelled to share my positive experience because I traveled solo and felt safe and entertained the entire time. I made friends on the trip and got to experience some amazing places, some really good food, and … More a lot of cool stories thanks to the guides. The day to Wicklow was with Liam, he was extremely funny and very passionate about the locations we visited. The day tour to the cliffs was with Ciara and Steven, both very helpful, fun, and professional. Overall, I had an amazing experience, and I would recommend Wild Rover to anyone looking to see Ireland and learn about the beautiful country while having a lot of fun.

What are the most popular Game of Thrones filming locations near Dublin?

Game of Thrones filming locations in Ireland

Here is a brief list of the otherworldly and extraordinary locations used for the filming of Game of Thrones. These locations include deep forests, impressive castles, a historical abbey and coastal wonders.

The Game of Thrones location tours get to explore and experience some of these unforgettable and inspiring sites that we can recognize on screen!

1 – The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges, Game of Thrones, Ireland

The Dark Hedges are an avenue of around 100 beech trees that create a mystical tunnel with their tangled overhanging branches. The trees were planted during the 18th century to adorn the driveway of Gracehill House, a property in Country Antrim.

Dark Hedges inspired the Kingsroad in Game of Thrones which appears in many episodes throughout the series. The Kingsroad is a major highway in the fictional world of Westeros that connects the capital city of King’s Landing to the northern regions. It was along the  Dark Hedges that Arya Stark disguised herself as a boy to escape from King’s Landing.

The canopy of interlocking branches creates a spellbinding and striking backdrop for some atmospheric photos that Game of Thrones enthusiasts won’t want to miss!

2 – Castle Ward

Castle Ward, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Castle Ward is a large 18th-century country manor house near the village of Strangford (approximately around 2 hours drive from Dublin).

The courtyard, towers and grounds were used for the filming of the fictional ‘Winterfell castle’. A visit to Castle Ward allows you to imagine the intimate living quarters of the Stark family!

Castle Ward offers an interesting architectural mix including a Classical Palladian façade and a Georgian Gothic entrance featuring grey stone towers with battlements.

3 – Inch Abbey

Inch Abbey, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Game of Thrones fans will definitely not want to miss out on a stop-off to Inch Abbey, an iconic 12th century Cistercian monastery nowadays left crumbled in ruins.

The Abbey is located near the town of Downpatrick, North of Dublin. The eerie atmosphere created from the shadowed archways and fallen down remnants provides visitors with unforgettable memories!

Inch Abbey appears in Season 1 Episode 10 when Robb Stark is victorious after the Battle of the Whispering Wood and is declared King of the North. Walking around the grounds of Abbey visitors can conjure up images of Rob Stark gathering his supporting army!

4 – Tollymore Forest Park

Tollymore Forest Park, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Tollymore Forest Park is one of the largest forest parks in Northern Ireland and was used to shoot scenes of the Haunted Forest in Game of Thrones. You can really imagine the Knight Watch scouts seeing the White walkers coming through the forest!

The park consists of a vast area of enchanting woodland, trickling rivers, stone bridges, stepping stones and waterfalls. This is an essential visit during the Game of Thrones Tours from Dublin because of the natural beauty and tranquility.

Visitors can immerse themselves walking along winding signposted forest trails and gaze up at the panoramic views of the surrounding Mourne mountains. As well as Game of Thrones, fantasy fans will appreciate the fact that the forest park was also used to film ‘Dracula Untold’ in 2014.

5 – Downhill Beach

Downhill Beach, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Downhill Beach consists of 11km of wild sandy coast and rugged cliffs, a suitably dramatic and breathtaking setting for the Game of Thrones scene featuring Dragonstone, the ancestral seat of House Targaryen.

Overlooking the beach, visitors can spot Mussenden Temple which gives a great panoramic view of the beach below. Built in a classical style during the 18th century the temple was originally a summer library. Mussenden Temple is a great place to look out over the swell and surf coming in from the Atlantic Ocean and take in the fresh bracing sea air.

6 – Larrybane

Larrybane, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Larrybane is an old limestone quarry, the name itself literally meaning ‘the ancient white site’. The beautiful white chalk of the quarry contrasts dramatically against the ocean where on a breezy day visitors can watch as the waves crash against the rock faces.

The quarry was used as a location for filming Season 2 for example Renly Baratheon’s camp. It is also in this quarry that Brienne of Tarth manages to win the tournament against Ser Loras Tyrell.

If the visibility is good, on some days it is possible to spot Rathlin Island out to sea in the distance. Rathlin Island is 6 miles away from the coast and has a small population of around 150 residents.

7 – Cushendun Caves

Cushendun Caves, Game of Thrones, Ireland

A trip around Northern Ireland Country Antrim wouldn’t be complete without marveling at the extraordinary geological formations of the Cushendun caves. The caves themselves are the product of natural constant coastal erosion dating back from 400 million years!

Game of Thrones fans will remember the dramatic scene from Season 2 Episode 4 filmed in the interior of the caves when Melisandre (the Red Witch) gives birth to a shadow creature.

Take the opportunity to explore the caves and watch how the light enters through the rocks and reflects off the surfaces. There is also some different algae growing on the cave walls to examine!

8 – Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Poised on a rocky outcrop medieval castle that dates back to the 13th century, Dunluce Castle is considered to be one of the most picturesque castles in Northern Ireland.

Dunluce castle inspired the House Greyjoy so Game of Thrones fans will enjoy using their imaginations to picture characters such as Barlon Greyjoy strolling around the castle and gazing out of its many turrets. In the series Dunluce castle was digitally reconstructed to form the House of Greyjoy but its original essence remains definitely very visible to visitors.

In addition to Game of Thrones, there are many legends that have been passed down over the years surrounding the castle. Legend has it that the place is haunted by the ghost of a kitchen boy who plunged into the sea and perished after the castle kitchens collapsed into the dark waters below.

It is also said that some ships from the Spanish Armada were shipwrecked on nearby rocks at the feet of this imposing castle.

9 – Ballintoy Harbour

Ballintoy Harbour, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Make a stop at the quaint charming fishing village of Ballintoy Harbour in County Antrim. The harbor itself sits in a sheltered bay and visitors can contemplate awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic and watch the small colorful fishing vessels.

Perhaps some lucky visitors may even have the chance to spot some local wildlife, such as seals or seabirds. The Harbour itself has some picturesque cottages and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, providing a glimpse into the traditional way of life in a coastal community.

Game of Thrones buffs will recognize the harbour as being the main port of Pyke which appears in Season 2. Pyke is one of the Iron Islands and the home of Theon and Yara Greyjoy.

10 – Fair Head

Fair Head, Game of Thrones, Ireland

Located in County Antrim, Fair Head is the name of an impressive cliff face. Fair Head has gained fame for being one of the tallest cliff faces in Northern Ireland, soaring to approximately 196 meters!

Its sheer and looming basalt columns attract rock climbers and nature enthusiasts. The shape of the rock-face which forms a sort of wall has even been likened to ‘organ pipes’ due to its elongated structure. It is hard for visitors not to be amazed by the sheer wilderness of the furrowed cliffs and stunning viewpoints.

Fair Head appears as the cliffs of Dragonstone three times during Season 7 for example an iconic scene where Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen discuss the seemingly grim future of Westeros. It is on the cliff of Fair Head that Jon Stone reaches out to touch the dragon’s face for the first time!

Benefits of the summer months include longer daylight hours to enjoy the outdoors to a maximum. Whilst one can never really guarantee sunny weather in Ireland, usually summer has less rainfall!

Spring is usually very mild and fresh and therefore presents a fantastic opportunity to witness the lush green landscapes that have made Ireland famous. The countryside comes alive with vibrant colors, and visitors can enjoy the beauty of blooming spring flowers as they explore the Game of Thrones filming locations.
