Austrian Schengen Visas

In 2018, there were 306,133 Schengen visa applications received across the world. 6.2% (19,098) were rejected. The Embassy of Austria in Canberra received 2,776 applications and rejected 122 (4.4%).

Applying for a Schengen Visa from Australia         

If you are from any of these countries, you do not need to apply for a visa to be able to visit Austria:

If you don’t see your country in the above list, that means you will need to apply for a visa to be able to enter and stay in Austria. If you are resident in Australia, this is not a problem as long as you can prove that you are legally allowed to stay in the country.

Step 1: How to complete your application?

Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application centre is generally free and can be done yourself. Step 3: Prepare your documents

You can find a list of what is required that you need on VFS Global’s website, so go through this before you start to prepare your documents. You have to make sure you get all the required paperwork together before you submit your application. If you fail to provide just 1 document, it could result in your application being rejected.

You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!

Documents include:

• Completed visa application form
• Appointment confirmation letter for submission of documents. 
• Passport photographs not older than 6 months
• Passport – must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure from the Schengen zone, at least two empty pages and issued no more than 10 years ago
• Proof of visa status in Australia – VEVO verification email sent directly from the Australian Department of Home Affairs’ website to [email protected] on the day you submit your application
• Reservation of return or round trip flight tickets
• Proof of Schengen travel insurance with a minimum cover of EUR 30,000 in the event of urgent medical treatment, hospitalisation, repatriation for medical reasons, repatriation of mortal remains and funeral expenses. The insurance must be valid throughout all Schengen countries and for the entire duration of your stay
• Proof of financial means – bank statements for the last three months showing sufficient funds to cover stay in the Schengen area
• Proof of accommodation – document from the establishment providing the accommodation or any other appropriate document indicating the accommodation envisaged such as a hotel reservation. If staying with a private host: original signed letter of invitation stating period of stay, purpose of stay and relationship to visa applicant, copy of host’s passport and copy of registration of residency (Meldebestätigung);  If sponsored by a private host: in Austria: electronic obligation (Elektronische Verpflichtungserklärung –EVE)
• Certified copy of marriage certificate/certificate of registered relationship and certified copy of spouse’s passport
• Proof of residence in Australia (lease/rental agreement, council rate notice or land purchase document
• For employees: documents proving your employment status in the company (e.g. contract, pay slips, letter from employer)
• If self-employed: certified copy of business registration
• For students: signed letter from university written on company letter head paper, confirming enrolment, the payment of your tuition fees or/and any scholarships as well as the purpose and duration of stay
• Employment contract/work permit
• Letter of consent and parent’s ID (for minors)
• Express Post A4 500g prepaid self-addressed envelope with signature on delivery (for passport return)

Step 4: A guide to your visa appointment

Your visa appointment will involve the following things:

• Submit your documents
• Answer any questions
• Provide biometrics

It’s a process that all visa applicants must go through, but it’s not as daunting as you might think. Just remember the following things:

• Arrive at the embassy at least 10 minutes before your appointment. The last thing you want is for your appointment to be rearranged
• Don’t forget any of the documents that you prepared earlier. VFS might not accept your application if you submit an incomplete application
• Dress smartly – there are benefits in dressing the part. It helps to make a good impression if you have taken care of your appearance

When you are with the visa officer, they will examine your application and if they need to clarify anything, you may have to answer some questions. All you need to do is to answer the questions honestly.

VFS Global also charge a fee of AUD$42.90 which is also paid when you submit your application. You can pay by credit or debit card. The fee won’t be refunded even if your visa application is refused.

If you have never applied for a Schengen visa before, you will have to provide biometric data which is a photograph and a scan of your fingerprints. If you have previously provided this data, it can be reused as long as your new application is within a 5 year period.

Step 5: Receive your visa

You can track your application once you have submitted it to VFS Global. Simply, go to their website, click on: “Track your application” and key in your reference number and last name.

When your application has been processed, your passport will be returned to you in the pre-paid envelope you provided.

The decision will be either:

• Approved – your visa will be inside your passport
• Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason and you can appeal the decision

Common rejection reasons include:

• Passport does not have 2 free pages – your passport must have 2 free pages. If it does not, you must get a new one before you apply for your visa
• No birth certificate – if the visa application is a minor, a birth certificate must be provided as part of your application
• No return flight booking – you must provide a return flight booking. There are no exceptions
• No proof of funds – you must be able to afford your trip and you should provide documents, such as bank statements, to prove this

Centrally located in the heart of Europe, with excellent transport connections, Austria is an easy place to reach. You can book a flight or train journey to the land of Mozart's birth in seconds; browsing through the different types of visas for travelers from different parts of the world can take a little longer.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting a visa for Austria.

Do I need a visa for Austria?

That depends on where you come from. As well as being a member of the European Union (EU), Austria is part of the Schengen Area , a network of 26 European countries who have agreed to remove internal border checks. If you are a citizen of another Schengen Area country, you can come and go almost as you please.

Austria's Schengen membership is also helpful for travelers from outside the region. If you’re granted a visa to any country in the Schengen zone, this also allows travel within any of the other Schengen countries, making it easy to combine a trip to Austria with visits to neighboring states such as Germany and Italy.

The full list of countries in the Schengen Area is: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Visa-free travel to Austria

Citizens and legal residents of EU or European Economic Area countries (and Switzerland) don’t need a visa to travel to Austria for a maximum of 90 days. However, you must still carry a valid passport or European Union ID card when in the Schengen Area.

Visa-free entry is granted to citizens of many other countries. Visitors from the United States of America, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, New Zealand, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore can also enter Austria visa-free for up to 90 days.

Holders of biometric passports from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine can also enter Austria without a visa, as can holders of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passports, Região Administrativa Especial de Macau passports and Taiwanese passports.

Traveling from the UK

Despite having left the European Union, tourists with a valid British passport can still travel to Austria without a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

If you wish to stay for a period lasting from 91 days up to six months, you will need to apply for a Schengen " Visa D " visa. The Austrian Embassy in the United Kingdom has outsourced its visa services to the external agency VFS Global – their website has details of the process for applications and arranging visa appointments. 

Visas for Austria

People traveling to Austria who don’t meet the criteria for a visa exemption will need to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa known as a " Visa C " visa. Valid for 90 days, it can be issued for single, double or multiple entries.

Applying costs €80 (approximately US$93) for adults and €40 (approximately US$46) for children aged between six and 12 years. You'll need a passport issued in the last 10 years, valid for at least three months after your date of departure, with at least two blank pages.

You'll also need to complete and sign an application form, and provide a 35mm by 45mm color passport photo that meets ICAO guidelines . Other requirements are:

• A biometric record of your fingerprints (if not collected within the last 59 months)
• A copy of the passport page with your photograph
• Copies of any previous Schengen visas
• Proof of onward transport – for example a flight reservation or train booking (presentation of actual paid-for tickets is not required).

Visa applications must be lodged with the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country of residence less than six months – and not later than 15 calendar days – before you intend to start your trip. Visa applications are examined on a case-by-case basis and the process can take between 15 and 30 days. Unless they’re issued in English, supporting documents must include a German translation.

Can I extend my visa?

If you plan to stay in Austria for more than 90 days, you can apply for a Schengen Visa D (national visa). This class of visa entitles the holder to remain in the country for up to six months, and also covers international student visa requirements for Austria.

Alternatively, you can apply for an extension of the short-stay Schengen visa. Getting a visa extension is fairly straightforward if you have a single-entry visa and entered the Schengen Area after the date your original visa became valid. The authorities are usually willing to grant an extension of stay to the full length of time granted on your original visa.

It's much harder to get an extension for personal reasons, humanitarian reasons, or because of a Force Majeure (an act of God – for example, a natural disaster).

You must apply to extend your visa before it expires, and we recommend starting the process at least a week before that date. Visa extension requests are handled by the Police Directorate of the Austrian province you’re staying in and they cost €30 (approximately US$35).

The application process can take up to a month. You’re permitted to stay in Austria during this period, but you can’t travel to any other Schengen country. Should your visa not be renewed, you will be asked to leave Austria within 48 hours at your own cost.

Working holiday visas for Austria

Austria offers working holiday visas valid for up to 12 months for travelers aged 18 to 30 from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Chile, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea and Taiwan (sometimes referred to as Chinese Taipei for visa purposes).

These visas allow you to enter Austria and work for local companies for the period that the visa is valid. Working holiday visa applications must be submitted through Austria’s European and International Affairs Federal Ministry . Full details of the requirements for different countries are listed on the ministry website, but the requirements typically include:

• A completed Visa D application form
• A biometric passport picture that meets ICAO criteria
• A valid passport
• Proof of health, accident and travel insurance covering the entire period of stay
• Sufficient funds to cover expenses incurred at the beginning of the stay
• Proof of onward travel (either a ticket or evidence of sufficient funds to purchase a ticket)

As a UK national, you will not need a visa to travel to Austria for a holiday (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). At border control, you may need to show a return or onward ticket or prove that you have enough money for your stay. You may need a visa or permit to stay for longer, to work or study, or for business travel . Please be aware that different rules may apply to non-UK nationals, even if they are family members of UK nationals.

Passport On the day you travel, you’ll need your passport to both:

• have at least 3 months left (Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended that your passport is valid for at least 6 more months when entering Austria. This would in many cases save you from having to proof the date of your intended leave of the EU.)
• be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left)

If this is not the case, you may not be able to travel to the EU, including Austria.

Passport validity of at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area is required. A passport validity of 6 months is recommended. Indian nationals need a Schengen visa to enter Austria. As from 2 November 2015 following the introduction of the Visa Information System (VIS), all Schengen visa applicants in India have to appear in person in order to provide biometric data (fingerprints and digital photography). The photograph has to be digitally taken at the time of the application or scanned from an existing one. For subsequent applications within 59 months, the fingerprints can be copied from the previous application file in the VIS. In case of reasonable doubt regarding the identity of the applicant, or about the fact, that the prints were collected within this 59-month period, the consulate will collect the fingerprints again. Visa applicants' biometric data can be collected by Schengen States' consulates and external service providers, but not commercial intermediaries.

Processing Time will be a minimum of 15 days (excluding day of submission at VFS) for all the Visa categories.  However, in some cases the procedure may take considerably longer. Applications accepted at the Austria Application Center in New Delhi will be submitted on the next working day at the Embassy of Austria, and applications submitted at the other 17  Austrian Application Centres  will be submitted after two working days at the Embassy of Austria in New Delhi.

Each child needs its own identification document (identity card or passport), as children's entries in a parent's passport are no longer valid since 26.06.2012.

Passport Controls within the Schengen Area

As a rule, checks are no longer carried out at the internal land borders to the Schengen states. However, in order to be able to provide proof of identity during random checks, travellers must carry their travel document in the Schengen area.

Nationals of EU member states, EEA countries , Switzerland and numerous other countries (e.g. Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, United States, etc.) do not require a visa to enter Austria. All other nationalities require a Schengen visa for a stay of up to 90 days.

With the entry into force of the Schengen Agreement, third-country nationals subject to visa requirements can also enter Austria with a Schengen visa without requiring another Austrian visa. Nationals who hold a residence permit in a Schengen state are entitled to travel to any other Schengen state and stay there for up to 90 days.

ETIAS - European Travel Information and Authorisation System

ETIAS travel authorisation is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to 30 European countries.

These 30 European countries require visa-exempt travellers to have an ETIAS travel authorisation:

ETIAS will be introduced in Spring 2025 with a 6 month transitional period.

An ETIAS is designed for short-term stays, up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A granted ETIAS is valid for 3 years or until the passport expires - whichever occurs first. It also allows multiple entries during these 3 years.

You can complete the application form using the official ETIAS website or the mobile app.

Applying for the ETIAS travel authorisation costs EUR 7 per person. Applicants under 18 and over 70 years old are exempt from this payment.

You need a valid travel document, which should a) not expire in less than three months, and b) not be older than 10 years. Specific requirements apply to travel documents issued by some countries and special administrative regions, entities and territorial authorities. Please check here for more information.

When completing the application, you will be asked to provide the following information:

• Personal information including your name(s), surname, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parent's first names, email address and phone number;
• Travel document details;
• Details about your level of education and current occupation;
• Details about your intended travel and stay in any of the countries requiring ETIAS;
• Details about any criminal convictions, any past travels to war or conflict zones, and whether you have recently been subject to a decision requiring you to leave the territory of any country.

Most applications are processed within minutes. If it takes longer, you will receive a decision within four days. If additional information is needed, this period could be extended by up to 14 days, or up to 30 days if you are invited to an interview. You should apply for an ETIAS well in advance of your planned journey.

ETIAS is linked to your travel document, so please make sure you travel with the same document that you used for your application. Otherwise, you will not be allowed entry at the border.

In principle, customs checks are no longer carried out, but spot checks are possible at any time. In the case of a direct flight (without a stopover in a third country) from an EU state to another EU state, the exit for EU travellers can be used.

Note : If the journey was started in a state outside the EU and only a stopover/transit stay was made in another EU country before entering Austria, the provisions for travelers from third countries apply.

Travel Allowances and Limits for Goods within the EU

Tobacco products or alcoholic beverages are exempt from duty only for personal use . If the standard quantities stated below are exceeded, you have to proof that the goods are intended for personal use.

Attention: Duty free purchases are no longer possible when travelling directly within the EU.

This provision does not apply to the Canary Islands (Spain), Gibraltar (Great Britain) and the British Channel Islands (Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, etc.). When entering from these countries, the same import quantities are allowed as when entering from non-EU countries.

Tobacco products (per person from 17 years and older):

• Cigarettes: 800 pieces
• Cigarillos (maximum 3 g unit weight): 400 pieces
• Cigars: 200 pieces
• Smoking tobacco: 1 kg

Alcoholic beverages (per person from 17 years and older):

• Spirits: 10 litres
• Alcoholic beverages other than beer, sparkling wine or wine up to 22 % vol.: 20 litres
• wine (of which max. 60 litres sparkling wine): 90 litres
• Beer: 110 litres

Entry to Austria from a state outside the EU

When passing through customs, you must declare the following goods , i.e. make a customs declaration for:

• Goods not intended for personal use
• Goods purchased outside the EU that exceed the duty-free allowances for tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, non-sparkling wines, beer and pharmaceuticals and the duty-free allowance for other goods
• Goods subject to import prohibitions or restrictions

Travel Allowances and Limits for Goods from Third Countries

Maximum quantities for duty-free import into Austria from third countries for personal use or as a gift in air and sea travel:

• Cigarettes: 200 pieces or
• Cigarillos (cigars with a maximum weight of 3 g each): 100 pieces or
• Cigars: 50 pieces or
• Smoking tobacco: 250 grams or
• A proportionate assortment of these goods
• Alcohol and alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of more than 22% vol. or undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% vol. or more: 1 litre or
• Alcohol and alcoholic beverages of an alcoholic strength by volume not exceeding 22% vol: 2 litres or
• A proportionate assortment of these goods and in addition
• Non-sparkling wines: 4 litres and
• Beer: 16 litres

Other goods up to a total value of 300 euros (for entry by land); for air travellers up to a total value of 430 euros.

For travellers under 15 years of age , these two allowances are generally reduced to 150 euros (regardless of the mode of transportation used). Multiple travellers may not add their travel allowances together.

Travel equipment for personal use during the stay may be imported into Austria duty-free and informally, provided there are no import bans.

Travel with Dogs, Cats & Co

This is what you need to keep in mind.

• A maximum of five animals per person are allowed.
• Each animal must be identified by a microchip . However, a tattoo carried out before July 3, 2011 is still valid, provided that it is clearly legible.
• Each animal must have a pet passport issued by a veterinarian authorized by the competent authority. It must also show that the animal in question has a valid rabies vaccination and, if applicable, a valid booster vaccination. The rabies vaccination is valid for 21 days after completion of the basic immunization, if the animal has undergone regular booster vaccination thereafter.

Leash or Muzzle Obligation

Leash and muzzle must be carried during your stay in Austria. In Austria, the regulation of the leash or muzzle obligation is the responsibility of the individual communities. There is no nationwide law in which the leash or muzzle requirement is precisely regulated. The tourism association of the chosen holiday destination can provide precise information about the regulations that apply in the respective municipality.

In general, the Upper Austrian dog-keeping law is taken as a basis.

An excerpt from it:

In the local area there is a leash OR muzzle obligation. If necessary, but in any case at bus stops, in public transport, in schools and kindergardens/nurseries, in children's playgrounds, as well as in larger gatherings of people, such as in shopping centers, bathing facilities and at events, there is a leash AND muzzle obligation.

Police dogs on duty, assistance and rescue dogs, trained hunting dogs, as well as dogs on whose assistance certain persons are dependent (e.g. guide dogs for the seeing impaired) are exempt from these regulations.

The municipality may determine by ordinance:

• where leash OR muzzle obligation does NOT apply in the local area (free running areas)
• where leash AND muzzle obligation applies in the local area
• where the carrying of dogs is generally prohibited in the local area (dog-free zone)
• where leashing OR muzzling is also compulsory outside the local area

Terrorist attacks can occur at any time. 

In November 2020, 4 people were killed in an attack in the inner city of Vienna. 

Terrorists have staged attacks in other European cities in recent years. Targets include:

• public transport, including train stations
• government buildings, including schools
• places of worship
• public areas that attract large groups of people, such as tourist attractions, music and cultural events, festivals, Pride events, Christmas markets, sporting venues and shopping centres.

European security services have stopped some planned attacks.

To protect yourself from terrorism:

• always be aware of your surroundings
• take care near places known to be possible terrorist targets
• report suspicious behaviour to the police
• alert police to unattended bags
• monitor the media for updates
• take official warnings seriously
• follow the advice of local authorities

If there's an attack, leave the area as soon as it's safe. Avoid the affected area in case of secondary attacks.

Austria has a low rate of serious crime.

Petty crime is increasingly common on public transport and in tourist areas. This includes:

• bag snatching
• pickpocketing

Hotspots for crime include:

• Vienna's largest train stations — Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof and Meidling
• On international trains and buses
• Tourist attractions, including St Stephen's Cathedral, the Imperial Palace (the Hofburg) and nearby shopping areas

To protect yourself from crime:

• watch your belongings in crowded areas and on trains, buses and taxis
• Do not place valuables in the overhead storage area on trains
• carry your belongings, including your passport, on your body
• don't go out alone after dark or to isolated places, especially on foot

Cyber security 

You may be at risk of cyber-based threats during overseas travel to any country. Digital identity theft is a growing concern. Your devices and personal data can be compromised, especially if you're connecting to Wi-Fi, using or connecting to shared or public computers, or to Bluetooth. 

Social media can also be risky in destinations where there are social or political tensions or laws that may seem unreasonable by Australian standards. Travellers have been arrested for things they have said on social media. Don't comment on local or political events on your social media.

Civil unrest and political tension

Public protests and events that draw large groups of people are usually peaceful but can turn violent. They can disrupt traffic and public transport. 

Protests in Vienna are usually held around the Ring Road and on the Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street. 

To stay safe:

• avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings
• monitor local media
• Demonstrations and civil unrest

Climate and natural disasters

Austria experiences  severe weather , including:

People have been killed in mudslides and avalanches in recent years.

Weather in alpine regions is unpredictable. It can change suddenly.

If you're visiting an alpine area:

• monitor local weather

• obey warning signs and notices

Before you travel:

• pack suitable equipment
• plan your activities carefully
• tell someone about your plans

Skiing outside of prepared skiing areas (off-piste) is dangerous. Stick to marked slopes and trails.

Hiking or mountain climbing without appropriate footwear (hiking boots) is dangerous. Stick to marked trails.

Travel insurance

Get comprehensive  travel insurance  before you leave. 

Your policy needs to cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation. The Australian Government won't pay for these costs.

If you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. This applies to everyone, no matter how healthy and fit you are.

If you're not insured, you may have to pay many 1000s of dollars up-front for medical care.

• that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be away (including if stopovers on the way to your destination are covered)
• If you plan to undertake high-risk activities, such as mountaineering or skiing, make sure your travel insurance covers you in an emergency. 

Physical and mental health

Consider your physical and mental health before you travel, especially if you have an existing medical condition. 

See your doctor or travel clinic to:

• have a basic health check-up
• ask if your travel plans may affect your health
• plan any vaccinations you need

Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

Medications

Not all medication available over the counter or by prescription in Australia is available in other countries. Some may even be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by an Australian doctor.

If you plan to bring medication, check if it's legal in Austria. Take enough legal medication for your trip.

Health risks

Insect-borne diseases

Tick-borne encephalitis  is a risk in forested areas.

Ticks are most common in country areas. They're active from spring to autumn.

Although rare,  West Nile virus  (World Health Organisation) cases have occurred in Austria. There's no vaccine for it.

To protect yourself from illness:

• make sure your accommodation is insect-proof
• use insect repellent
• wear long, loose, light-coloured clothing

To reduce your risk of tick-borne disease:

• check your body for ticks during and after visiting forests
• remove ticks as soon as possible, making sure to remove the whole tick
• monitor the tick site for signs of infection

Medical care

Medical facilities.

The standard of medical facilities is of a similar standard to Australia.

Most doctors speak English.

Medical care can be very expensive. Make sure you have travel insurance before you arrive.  

You're subject to all local laws and penalties, including those that may appear harsh by Australian standards. Research local laws before travelling.

If you're arrested or jailed, the Australian Government will do what it can to help you under our  Consular Services Charter . But we can't get you out of trouble or out of jail.

Don't use or carry illegal drugs. Penalties for drug offences are severe. Possessing even small amounts of illegal drugs can lead to prison sentences. This includes marijuana.

• Carrying or using drugs

You must always carry an ID, such as your passport. You may be asked to produce it by local police.

Preaching is illegal unless you belong to a registered religious group and have a permit.

If you're in public places or buildings, it's illegal to cover your face with clothing or objects so you can't be recognised.

You may be fined or have to attend a police station if:

• you refuse to uncover your face when asked
• it's not possible to confirm your identity

Some Australian criminal laws still apply when you're overseas. If you break these laws, you may face prosecution in Australia.

Every country or territory decides who can enter or leave through its borders. For specific information about the evidence you'll need to enter a foreign destination, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering. 

Make sure you meet all entry and exit conditions. If you don't, the Australian Government can't help you.

Austria is part of the  Schengen area , meaning you can enter without a visa in some cases.

In other situations, you'll need to get a visa.

Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Contact an  embassy or consulate of Austria  for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules.

Land borders are open, but you may be subject to random checks by Austrian authorities, particularly at borders with Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia.

Other formalities

Get a clear stamp on your passport when you enter the  Schengen area  for the first time. Carry your passport when crossing borders, even within the  Schengen area . 

Children  aged under 18 years who travel alone or with one parent may need a letter of consent from the non-travelling parents. Check with an  embassy or consulate of Austria  for details.

Some countries won't let you enter unless your passport is valid for 6 months after you plan to leave that country. It can apply even if you're just transiting or stopping over.

Some foreign governments and airlines apply the rule inconsistently. Travellers can receive conflicting advice from different sources.

You can end up stranded if your passport is not valid for more than 6 months.

The Australian Government does not set these rules. Check your passport's expiry date before you travel. If you're not sure it'll be valid for long enough, consider getting  a new passport .

Lost or stolen passport

Driving permit

You can drive on your Australian driver's licence for up to 12 months from your entry date. This only applies if you're not a resident of Austria.

You must also have either:

• an International Driving Permit (IDP), or
• a German translation of your licence

If you're a resident of Austria, your foreign driver's licence is valid for 6 months from the start of your residency permit.

Road travel

Road conditions are generally good. However, roads in alpine areas can be hazardous in winter.

Some mountain roads may close for extended periods.

Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 November to 15 April when driving in winter conditions. Carry snow chains if driving in mountainous areas in winter.

To drive on the motorways (autobahn), you must display a current highway toll sticker called a Vignette.

You can buy a vignette:

• at border crossings
• from petrol stations near the border
• at post offices

Random vignette checks occur. You'll be fined if you don't have one.

You must have in your car:

• a first aid kit
• a warning triangle
• high-visibility warning vests

If you get out of your vehicle on the shoulder of the road, you must:

• put a warning triangle behind the vehicle
• wear high-visibility warning vests (driver and passengers)

Check your rental car has the required safety equipment.

Motorcycles

Check with your travel insurer that your policy covers you for riding a motorbike, quad bike or similar.

Always wear a helmet.

Taxis are reliable and safe. Make sure the meter is running.

Public transport

Austria's public transport network is well-developed and reliable.

You'll be fined if you travel on public transport without a valid ticket.

To avoid a fine:

• follow all passenger notices
• validate your ticket before starting your journey
• keep your ticket until the end of your journey
• show your ticket to inspectors if asked

Visa application, processing, and getting are quite hustling for many people. But without a visa, you can hardly cross the border of other countries. And if you’re planning to visit Australia, then you can’t skip the visa processing.

Though Australia is pretty strict about visas, it doesn’t mean it is very hard to get an Australian visitor visa . Even I would say the Australian visa processing is much easier than any other country as the whole process takes place online. 

So, you can apply from your home. All you need is a phone or computer and a strong internet connection.

If you’re a first-time traveller and you intend to visit Australia as a genuine visitor, you should apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) . Also, if your Australian ETA (601) been refused and asked to apply Subclass 600 instead subclass 601 the follow this article.

Here in this article, I will give you a step-by-step guideline of how to apply for a visitor visa and some DOs and DON’Ts that you should follow if you don’t want your visa to be denied.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

What is australian visitor visa (subclass 600).

An Australian visitor visa (Subclass 600) is a short time visit visa that will allow you to enter Australia for less than three months. This visa allows you to enter and stay in Australia for an allotted amount of time, with you being responsible for abiding by the rules and regulations associated with it.

Visitor visa (Subclass 600) has nearly six streams, but the two main streams are the Tourist stream and the Business stream . The visa validation, cost, and time processing depend on these streams.

Tourist Stream

Travellers looking to visit Australia should apply for a tourist stream visa. This visa is typically used by visitors who are going to Australia for leisure, medical treatment, visiting family or friends, and even completing short-term study or training activities lasting less than 3 months.

Business Stream

The Business Visitor Stream visa is for those travelling to Australia for business-related activities, such as attending a conference, training or seminars. Non-work-related activities such as networking and making sales enquiries are also allowed. It is important to note that this visa does not allow recipients to provide their services in the country while they are here.

Requirements for Australian visitor visa

Here I have listed some required and recommended information and documents that you may need to apply for the Australian visitor visa.

1. Online application form

Applying for a visa to enter, travel and stay in Australia just got simpler. Those looking to apply now can go online to complete the entire process, making it that much faster and more convenient! So, you can apply for your visa at your home without any hustle.

You have to fill up a 19-page application form that you will get after creating an ImmiAccount on the official immigration website of the Australian government. Get more details about the application form in the “how to apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) online” below.

2. A Valid Passport

When applying for an Australian visa, it is necessary to provide a valid passport as part of the application documentation. This is essential for the Australian government to consider and process visa requests. You have to scan your passport and then attach the file with the application form. The scanned copy should be clear and transparent. Otherwise, your visa can be rejected.

3. Recent passport size photos

As you have to provide all information through an online process, you must submit a soft copy of every document, including your photo and passport. You must attach a coloured passport-size photo to the required section of your application form. The photo must be clear and vivid.

4. National identity cards (if Have)

National identity cards are not mandatory for all applicants. But if you have, you must submit it. And if you’re under 18 and you don’t have your national identity card, then you can provide your birth certificate or other documents as evidence of your identity.

5. Proof of financial status

Proof of financial status is crucial for an Australian visitor visa, proving that you have enough funds in your bank account to support your stay and leave in Australia. To prove your financial status and you have enough funds, you need the following documents:

Your bank statement of at least three months period (if you’re carrying your trip expense).  Tax Return Your pay slips. Term deposits Audited accounts Credit card statement (if have)

Note: If someone is sponsoring your Australia trip, you may have to apply for a Sponsored family stream visa. Usually, your family member can sponsor your trip under this visa who has Australian citizenship or permanent resident, and your sponsor might be asked to pay a security bond.

In this travel itinerary, you have to include your day-to-day plans like places to visit and things to do during your vacation. And also mention the date, time, and your accommodation. Note: Travel itinerary is mandatory ONLY for those you are applying for the Tourist stream .

7. A cover letter

A cover letter is surely optional, but it can help you to get the visa smoothly. Because the whole process of applying and getting the Austria visitor visa would be online, there is no interview where you can explain your travel plans and purpose.

So, it is better to submit a cover letter that will explain your travel reason and travel plans. But of course, your cover letter must support every information that you have already submitted for the visa application.

8. Travel health insurance

Travel health insurance is also optional, like the cover letter, but it helps a lot to get the visa, and at the same time, the insurance is helpful during your stay in Australia. For example, if you have a medical emergency during your stay or your flight has been cancelled, you will get immediate financial support from the insurance company. So, travel insurance is required for your own sake and the visa authority also gets assurance that you can carry any medical emergency if needed.

9. Proof of employment status

With your visa application, you also need to submit evidence of your employment status. 

For employee

• NOC or Non-Objection Certificate
• A letter that explains your role in the company
• Income tax document

For Self-Employed or business owners

• Business licence
• A finance sheet that explains profits and losses

For Students

• Students need to show their enrolment certificate of the particular school or university.
• A non-objection letter from the specific school or university.

10. Application Fees

If you’re applying from outside Australia, then the tourist stream will cost you AUD 190.00 . And the cost is also the same for a business stream visa. You can pay the visa fee through your credit card, debit card, UnionPay, PayPal, and BPAY.

11. Additional Information

A Flight itinerary that will show Australia entering and exiting dates. And without buying an actual flight ticket, you can reserve your roundtrip flight which is also refundable in case your visa gets rejected.

An invitation letter from your family or friends if you’re staying with them in Australia. The letter should state your relationship with them, the reason for your trip, and so on. 

Provide evidence of your previous travel (if you have). It may help you to get the visa smoothly.

A marriage license (if have) or a divorce certificate (if have).

Any property paper or house paper that you own in your home country.

Note: If any of this information is not in English, you’re highly recommended to translate them into English and then submit them.

Important Notes:

You don’t have to submit all the documents as some are required, and some are recommended. But it is better to submit as many as possible, which will increase the possibility of getting the visa. And remember your passport and photo are mandatory that you can’t skip. As you know, all your files have to be submitted through an online process. So, you have to make them either a jpg, PNG, BMP, or PDF file to submit. And no zip files or encrypted pdf files are acceptable. Don’t make your file size more than 5MB, as larger size files are not acceptable. If you have files that are bigger than 5MB, make sure you reduce the size and then upload them.

How to Apply for an Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Online?

Obtaining a visa to visit Australia is straightforward if you have the right information and documents. A simple guide can help make the process simpler and stress-free. Here I have explained how to apply for an Australian visitor visa in four easy steps. Also, you can watch my video in above.

1. Create an ImmiAccount

Creating an ImmiAccount is the most simple and crucial part of an Australian visitor visa application. Without having the ImmiAccount, you can’t get the application form, and you have to create it from immi.gov.au , which is the official immigration website of the Australian government.

Here you will get two steps to create the account. You need to fill up your family name, phone number, and, most importantly, an active email address at the first step. In comparison, the second step requires setting a password and some questions about you. Click here to create your ImmiAccount .

2. Fill up the application form

After registering for the ImmiAccount, you will receive an email to get access to the account. Now you just have to do the following steps.

First, log in to your account and click the “ New application ” option.  Then you have to choose the visa type. If you’re a genuine tourist, select the “ visitor ” option and then “ visitor visa (600) “. Now you have a 19-page application form which you must fill up carefully and correctly. Don’t give any wrong information that may cause your visa denial. 

In these three simple steps, you can accomplish your visitor visa application form. And in case you cannot fill up your application form right then, you can always save it and edit it later. Moreover, you don’t have to print the form. Just fill-up the form and submit it. But be sure you have given all the correct information before submitting it.

3. Attach relevant documents

At this point, you have to submit all the required and recommended documents that we have mentioned before. On your application dashboard, you will have an option where you can upload all your files. Make sure you submit as many files as possible and make them less than 5MB before submitting them.

Now it’s time to submit your application form and then receive an Application Receipt via email.

Note: Remember, after submitting your application form, you cannot edit it anymore. So do double check before submitting.

4. Pay the visa fees

Now the last step is payment. The tourist stream visa fee is AUD 190.00 , and you also need to pay it online through a Credit card, debit card, UnionPay, or PayPal. 

5. Make an Appointment for Biometrics

After submitting the application, create an account with VFS Global for biometric enrollment. You should have already received an email from Home Affairs regarding this, which includes an attachment stating the requirement to provide personal identifiers (biometrics) for the purposes of Section 40 of the Migration Act 1958 in relation to your Visitor (Tourist) (subclass 600) visa application.Please use your application number to schedule an appointment with VFS.

What is the Processing Time? 

No one can predict the visa processing time as it is based on circumstances and the age of application finalisation. My visa processing time took nearly two years because I applied in February 2020 before the COVID-19 outbreak and the border was closed. I have received my visa confirmation email in March 2022.

But don’t be scared! Now the border has reopened for all visitors, and the processing time may take a few weeks. So don’t be so hopeless, just wait patiently as I did.

It also depends on your travel itinerary, but you should apply at least six months before your planned trip. Since there is a huge backlog, submit your application as early as possible.

How much bank balance do I need for the approval of my visa? 

It is hard to say any exact number that you need to have in your bank account. Because it depends on many factors like how many days you’re intended to stay in Australia, your accommodation cost, your daily cost, etc. Make sure you have enough funds in your bank account so that you can maintain your stay and leave. With my personal experience, Australia is a very expensive place for many including myself. If you have pre-booked (paid) accommodations and purchased flight tickets, then i think at least A$ 200 per day.

What can be the possible reasons for an application denial?

Your visa can be denied, refused or rejected for many different reasons. But the most primary and possible reasons are the following: If you submit wrong information or unclear information. If you fail to prove that you have no intension to overstay in Australia. If your travel purpose is ambiguous. If you fail to prove that you or your sponsor has enough funds to support your trip. Weak travel history Not enough funds Fake or misleading information Not telling truth about previous visa application refused from other countries, namely from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand etc.

I have applied my Visitor Visa Subclass 600 on Dec 25th 2022 and still the application status is stuck at ”Further Assessment”. I have provided all requested documents = total is 23 docs uploaded to the immi account.

My Wife and I is in the midst of processing the ETA to go to Australia. We have been rejected once before so I wonder if it’s still advisable to pursue the same path or go with subclass 600? though the first time we did not have our flights booked.

I am sorry to hear that you have been rejected once before. While it is not impossible for you and your wife to be approved again, it is still a challenge.

In your case, I would advise you to pursue ETA visa rather than a subclass 600. This is because the ETA visa does not require an invitation letter from your relative in Australia. However, if you choose the subclass 600 route, then I would suggest that you contact our office so that we can write an invitation letter for you and attach it to your application when we lodge it on your behalf.

Do you have any other passports? Or you are a dual citizen? If not a dual citizen please include all your last 5 years travel histories. If you are Malaysian just use their ETA apps.

Some nationality get longer waiting time then others. You are already there legally on a student visa so I don’t think your wife application will have anything with your current student visa.

Hello, I have submitted my visitors visa application last June 19,2022 and the status is for further assessment. What does it mean? How woud I know if there’s incorrect upload of the required attachment, do they email me about it? I am just confused because under actions of my immi account it says Attached documents and health assessment. when I click on health assement it says no further examination required. on attached documemts it says further assessment. Hello there, health assement not required for tourists. The Department of Home Affairs will make further assessment on your visa application. You will be informed of this in writing by the Department and be given the opportunity to provide additional information or documents as part of this process. I am agree with you that delay might be the reason of huge backlogs. And regarding incorrect uploads, The answer is, you don’t need to upload any more documents as they are already there unless you received any email for additional documents. With regard to submission of documents not in English should I provide both original and translated documents.

They are refunding those who are withdraw their application. In your case i didn’t exactly understand what they mean to giving you visa 26 or 37 days. Usually Australian visa Sub class 600 comes one or two years validity.
