Add a Website Bookmark to Your Home Screen on iPhone and iPad

Some websites don't have a dedicated mobile app for accessing their content, but that doesn't mean you can't add bookmarks to favorite websites on your Home screen.

How To Use Web Apps Feature

When you tap a website bookmark on your Home screen, it opens in Safari on the specific page you selected. If the site you're linking to has a dynamic mobile-friendly layout, accessing it from your Home screen can even become an app-like experience.

What's more, you can create as many website links as you like and arrange them on your iPhone or iPad Home screen, just like you would with regular apps. Here's how it works.

How to Create a Website Link on Your Home Screen

  • Launch Safari on your ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌.
  • Navigate to the site that you want to create a Home screen shortcut to.
  • Tap the Share icon (the square with an arrow pointing out of it) at the bottom of the screen.

  • Type a name for your site link. This will be the title that appears beneath its icon on your Home screen.

Your new "web app" will appear in the next available space on your device's Home screen. To move it like you would any other app, tap and hold its icon, then tap Edit Home Screen , and you'll be able to drag it to your desired location. When you've placed it where you want it, tap Done .

Your Old iPhone Could Run Apple Intelligence, Here's Why Apple Said No

I use 8 free tricks to get higher quality audio recordings on my iphone, ipads can reformat drives now, but they still can't do these computer tasks, quick links, add a website to your iphone home screen, add a website to your ipad home screen, more about the web shortcut icon.

If you find yourself frequently visiting a website or using a web app on your iPhone or iPad, it's easy to add a shortcut icon directly on your Home screen using Safari that you can quickly tap to launch the site. Here's how.

First, open Safari and navigate to the website you'd like to put on your iPhone's Home screen. Once there, make sure you can see the navigation toolbar by tapping once near the bottom of the screen, which will make it appear.

On the navigation toolbar at the bottom of the screen, tap the Share icon (the rectangle with an upward arrow).

A Share menu will appear at the bottom of the screen. Use your finger to pull it up and swipe through the list. Tap "Add to Home Screen."

A menu titled "Add to Home Screen" will appear. Use this menu to name your new Home screen web icon anything you'd like using the onscreen keyboard. Once you're done, tap "Add" in the top-right corner of the box.

The icon for the website will appear on your Home screen . Any time you'd like to use it, just tap on the shortcut as if it were a regular app. Safari will automatically open and load the website.

On your iPad, open Safari and navigate to the website you'd like to put on your Home screen. Once there, make sure you can see the navigation toolbar by tapping once near the top of the screen, which will make it appear.

On the navigation toolbar at the top of the screen, locate the Share icon (the rectangle with an upward arrow). Tap on it.

A Share menu will appear on the right side of the screen. Tap "Add to Home Screen."

Next, a pop-up titled "Add to Home Screen" will appear where you can name your new Home screen icon anything you'd like. Once you're done, tap "Add" in the top-right corner of the box.

The icon for the website will appear on your iPad's Home screen. Any time you'd like to visit the site, just tap on the shortcut. Safari will automatically open and load it up.

The website icon we created with Safari looks and behaves like a regular app icon on the iPhone's or iPad's Home screen. You can rearrange it along with other apps, add it to a folder, or even drag it to the Dock.

You might notice that some websites have Home screen icons that seem perfectly tailored to the iPhone or iPad interface. That's because these sites specifically created an image for this purpose and defined it in their website's code . Otherwise, your iPhone or iPad will generate a tiny thumbnail of the website to use as its icon.

So far, only Safari can create shortcut icons like this. And since Apple doesn't let you change your default browser, the sites always load in Safari, as well. Still, it's a handy way to speed up your iPhone or iPad experience.

How To Add A Website Shortcut To Your iPhone Home Screen

W hile mobile apps are great, they're not always the perfect solution for every smartphone user's needs. Sometimes, the mobile app just isn't good, either because the company's target market prefers in-person or browser-based transactions. In other cases, developers may not have the resources or capacity to regularly adjust their apps to the latest iOS updates or comply with Apple's developer requirements. It's also important to not keep unnecessary apps on your iPhone to avoid security breaches .

Having a website shortcut on your iPhone home screen is a great solution, providing an alternative to adding a bookmark directly on your browser or downloading an entire app. And if you need more convincing, website shortcuts  free up your iPhone storage space  while still making it easy to access websites and services you use frequently.

Thankfully, you can easily add a website shortcut or bookmark from many browsers into your iPhone home screen. While not all browsers have this option, many of the top browsers for iPhone do offer it, such as Safari, Chrome, Firefox, DuckDuckGo, and Microsoft Edge. If you use any of these browsers, here's how to add an app-like shortcut to navigate from your iPhone screen to any website.

How To Create A Website Shortcut For iPhone On Safari, Chrome, And DuckDuckGo

While it may not be your browser of choice, all iPhone users have the native Safari browsing app on their device. So, if you're ready to create a website bookmark or shortcut, here's how to do it without downloading a new browser:

On your Safari app, go to the website you want to create a shortcut.

In the lower-middle section of the screen, tap the Share icon > Add to Home Screen.

Type the app name you prefer to appear beneath the icon on your home screen.

In the upper-right corner of the screen, tap Add.

If you're part of the majority of the world's internet users who prefer Google Chrome, follow these steps to create a website shortcut.

On your Google Chrome app, go to the website you want to create a shortcut.

  • In the upper-right corner of the screen, tap the Share icon > Add to Home Screen.

Type how you prefer its name to appear on your home screen.

In the upper-right corner of the screen, tap Add.

For privacy-focused iPhone users who use the DuckDuckGo browser app , you can also use this feature easily:

  • On your DuckDuckGo app, go to the website you want to create a shortcut.

Type how you prefer it to appear on your desktop.

How To Create A Website Shortcut For iPhone On Firefox And Microsoft Edge

While the method for adding a website bookmark or shortcut isn't as straightforward for iPhone users who use Firefox, it is still possible. Here's how:

On your Firefox app, go to the website you want to create a shortcut.

In the lower-right corner of the screen, tap the stacked-lines hamburger icon.

Tap Share > Add to Home Screen.

Type how you prefer its name to appear.

Lastly, for Microsoft Edge enthusiasts, here's a quick way to add a website link that you can click directly on your iPhone home screen:

On your Microsoft Edge app, go to the website you want to create a shortcut.

In the lower-right corner of the screen, tap the three-line hamburger icon.

Select Share > Add to Home Screen.

Tips For Creating Website Bookmarks Or Shortcuts On iPhone

Should the option to Add to Home Screen not appear, consider updating your browser. You should also consider updating your iPhone operating system software to the latest version. Unfortunately, we've discovered that there is no option to use this feature for some browsers, such as Opera and Ecoasia, so you'll need to use an alternate browser if you want to add a website bookmark on your home screen. Depending on the website you are trying to bookmark, they may also request to be able to send you notifications, which you can choose to decline.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you will not be able to edit the website name and link to a website shortcut once it is added to your home screen. Instead, you have to delete and re-create the shortcut. In addition, it's important to keep your website bookmark's name to a maximum of 12 characters including spaces, or risk having the name cut off.

If you no longer have use for the shortcut, you can easily remove it by long pressing the app name and tapping Delete Bookmark. In the same vein, there is also a quick action option to share this bookmark with other people. Aside from quick website links, you can also add other things to your iPhone home page, such as a  shortcut from the Shortcuts app .

Using Safari, navigate to the website you want to add to your home screen. It’s important to note that this method only works with Safari, not other browsers.

Step 2: Tap the Share Icon

Look for the share icon (it looks like a box with an arrow pointing up) and tap it.

The share icon is usually located at the bottom of the screen on an iPhone. If you don’t see it, try scrolling up or tapping the screen to reveal the toolbar.

Step 3: Choose “Add to Home Screen”

From the share menu, scroll until you find the “Add to Home Screen” option and tap it.

You might have to swipe left on the bottom row of icons in the share menu to find the “Add to Home Screen” option.

Step 4: Name Your Bookmark

Give your bookmark a name. This is what will appear on your home screen, so make it something recognizable.

You can also edit the URL if you want to bookmark a specific part of a website. When you’re done, tap “Add” in the top right corner.

After completing these steps, you’ll see a new icon on your home screen representing the website you bookmarked. It works just like an app; tap it, and you’ll be taken directly to the site.

Tips for iOS 17 Home Screen Bookmarks on iPhone

  • Rearrange your bookmarks by tapping and holding, then dragging them to a new spot.
  • Group bookmarks into folders by dragging one bookmark onto another.
  • Use custom icons for your bookmarks to make them stand out.

  • Refresh your bookmarks periodically to ensure they link to the correct web pages.

How to add bookmarks to your iPhone home screen

By Charlie Sorrel • 1:00 pm, July 2, 2018

  • Top stories

These bookmark-metaphor photos are going a bit too far.

If you have a website you visit frequently — and who doesn’t? — then you might like to have quicker access to that site. You might appreciate an icon on your iPhone’s home screen that you can tap to launch that site, just like you’d launch an app.

Today we’ll see how to add a bookmark to your iPhone home screen. And if you already know how to do this, check out the post anyway. There are a couple of neat extra tricks in there.

How to add a website bookmark to your iPhone home screen

Add to home screen.

To add a website bookmark to your home screen 1 , open up the site in Safari, and tap the share arrow. Then find the Add to home screen button and tap it. You’ll see the following screen, where you can edit the name of the bookmark. Pick something short so you can see it all in the small icon label. Tap Add to add it. Now, tap the home button (or your iPhone X equivalent) to return to the home screen. You’ll see a new icon, which can be tapped to take you straight back to the site.

Some websites have long taglines. Trim them here.

Two kinds of home-screen bookmark

Normally, when you tap this icon, Safari will open and the page will load. But there’s another kind of saved bookmark. Some sites take advantage of an iOS feature that lets them become offline web-apps. If this is the case, then when you tap the icon, it will load as if it were an app. Safari does not launch. Instead, your new web-app gets its own web-view, and it can even use local iPhone storage to save its data, so that the app can work offline, too.

Paperback is a bookmarked website, right there in the App Switcher!

There’s no way to force this behavior. The site either has it built-in, or not. One site that uses it, if you want to experiment, is called Paperback, and it’s used for reading websites saved in Pinboard , like a kind of more-private Instapaper.

Search and folders

home screen bookmarks show up as apps in Spotlight searches.

One advantage of adding your bookmarks like this is that they show up in Spotlight searches (although regular bookmarks also show up in search, these are a lot easier to spot). And even better, if the site is saved as an offline web-app, it also shows up in the ⌘-Tab app switcher if you have a keyboard attached to your iPhone or iPad.

Custom icons

Sometimes, a website’s designer hasn’t bothered to provide an icon for the site, and so Safari has nothing to use as a home screen icon. In this case, iOS takes a screenshot of the page and turns that into an icon which is pretty much always as fugly as hizzle. One neat workaround for this the is to zoom on on something on the webpage before saving it as a home screen bookmark. Then, when iOS snaps the screenshot, it uses that zoomed in page element instead. Bonus tip: Switch Safari to Reader View fist in order to get nice clean, large, screen-filling images.

How to Add Safari Website Shortcut on iPhone Home Screen in iOS 17

Did you know that you can add a Safari website shortcut on iPhone Home Screen? If you need to frequently visit a site, this productivity-centric hack can come in super handy.

Instead of launching Safari -> entering the URL of the site in the search bar and then visiting the site, just tap on the website shortcut on the Home Screen, and you are all set.

Yeah, that’s how simple it is! So, if you find it worth having at your disposal, let me guide you through it.

Add Safari Website Shortcut on Home Screen on iPhone

It’s worth pointing out up front that you can take advantage of this feature even in the older versions of iOS. Hence, even if your iPhone is not running the latest iteration of iOS, you can bring it into play.

1. First off, open Safari on your iPhone.

2. Now, head over to the website (like GeekChamp), which shortcut you would like to place on the Home Screen.

3. Next, tap on the Share icon.

4. Next up, select Add to Home Screen in the share sheet.

Select add to Home Screen in iOS share sheet

5. After that, give a suitable name to the shortcut and hit Add at the top right to finish.

Add Safari Website Shortcut on iPhone Home Screen in iOS 16

That’s done! Now, go to the Home Screen to check the website URL. All you need to do to visit the site is just hit the shortcut. Note that you can repeat the same steps to add shortcuts to many sites.

Signing Off…

So, that’s how you can place a website shortcut on your iPhone Home Screen. Ever since I came across this tip, I have been using it to quickly access my favorite sites. Thanks to the addition of several impressive features like privacy reports , pinning tabs , saving web pages to Quick Note , and access-only specific tabs during Focus Mode , Safari has become far more user-friendly than before.

Not to mention, the Apple browser has also got a pretty solid collection of extensions to take on Google Chrome that is still ruling across platforms. That said, what do you have to say about this time-saving hack and whether or not you find it neat? Be sure to shoot your thoughts in the comments below.

Did you accidentally remove the Safari app, and you're now wondering how to get Safari back on your iPhone's Home Screen? Look no further, as there are a few ways you can add Safari back to the Home Screen.

Fortunately, Apple doesn't allow deleting or uninstalling the Safari app since it's the native browser on iOS. So, it's not permanently gone from your iPhone.

So, if you removed the Safari app from your iPhone's Home Screen and cannot find it anywhere, this guide should help you put it back on the Home Screen.

1. Add Safari From the App Library

iPhones come with the App Library feature that shows you all the installed apps grouped in folders of their categories. If you've removed Safari from the Home Screen, you can check the App Library on your iPhone and add it from there.

  • Swipe to the right-most Home Screen page on your iPhone until you reach the App Library .
  • Tap the search bar on top and type Safari. The Safari app will appear in the search results.
  • Long-press on Safari's icon and tap Add to Home Screen .

You can also drag the Safari app to the Home Screen if the Add to Home Screen button is missing from the menu.

2. Add Safari From Spotlight Search

Another way to add the Safari app back to the Home Screen is by searching for it using Spotlight. This feature lets you find apps, settings, contacts, and more.

Here's how you can use the Spotlight search feature to find and add the Safari app back to the Home Screen on your iPhone:

  • Tap the Search icon at the bottom of your iPhone's Home Screen (above the dock).
  • Type Safari, and you'll find the app in the search results.
  • Tap and hold the Safari icon.
  • Select Add to Home Screen .

Alternatively, you can drag the Safari app to one of your Home Screen pages from here.

3. Unrestrict Safari From Screen Time Settings

If you can't find Safari in the App Library or Spotlight search, it's likely because the app is restricted in the Screen Time settings. Follow the steps below to remove the Screen Time restriction for Safari on your iPhone:

  • Launch Settings on your iPhone.
  • Go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps .
  • Toggle on the switch for Safari .

That's it. You should be able to see the Safari app on your Home Screen after toggling on the Safari switch. Editing your Screen Time settings is also one of the best ways to fix Safari not working on an iPhone .

4. Reset the Home Screen Layout

If none of the above methods worked, you should try resetting your iPhone's Home Screen layout. Doing this will delete any folders you've created on your Home Screen, and all the apps, including Safari, will return to their original location. Here's how you can do it:

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Go to General > Transfer or Reset > Reset .
  • Choose the Reset Home Screen Layout option.

After doing this, you should see the Safari app back on your iPhone's Home Screen.

Put Safari Back on Your iPhone's Home Screen

Safari comes pre-installed on all Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. So, even if you accidentally removed the Safari app from your iPhone's Home Screen, it's not completely gone from your device.

You can easily fix this issue by adding the Safari app from the App Library, removing the screen time restriction for Safari, or resetting your iPhone's Home Screen layout. But if you still can't find Safari on your iPhone, it's time to report your issue to Apple.

How To : You Don't Need Safari to Add Web Apps to Your iPhone's Home Screen — Try These Browsers Instead

You Don't Need Safari to Add Web Apps to Your iPhone's Home Screen — Try These Browsers Instead

Safari isn't the only web browser on your iPhone or iPad that will let you add icons to your Home Screen for progressive web apps and website bookmarks. Apple gave developers the key to its " Add to Home Screen " feature, and your favorite iOS or iPadOS web browser may already support it.

Since iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4 , third-party mobile web browsers have had the tools needed to implement Add to Home Screen. If supported, whether it's your default browser or not, you can add shortcuts for web apps to your Home Screen that will open in their own WebView instances.

To add to that functionality, as of iOS 17.0 and iPadOS 17.0 , Apple now includes support for Add to Home Screen in Safari View Controller, the self-contained web interface available in non-browser apps

If you're favorite iOS web browser supports Add to Home Screen, that's just one more reason to make it your default over Safari.

Jump to a Section

Web apps vs. web bookmarks, the different home screen icon styles, browsers that support add to home screen.

For a website or webpage to open as a web app on your iPhone or iPad, it must include "standalone" or "fullscreen" display views in its manifest file. If true, the web app will open in its own WebView, and it will get its own card in your iPhone's or iPad's app switcher, separate from your web browser.

Since iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4, web apps can also issue web push notifications and badges, like regular apps do. That's one reason Add to Home Screen is so useful now.

You Don't Need Safari to Add Web Apps to Your iPhone's Home Screen — Try These Browsers Instead

According to Apple , a website or webpage added to your Home Screen that's missing web app behavior in the manifest file and has no "meta" tag marking it as web app capable will be a simple bookmark that opens up as a tab in your default web browser.

Before iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4, Home Screen bookmarks created with Safari would open in Safari. However, since other apps can add Home Screen bookmarks now, Home Screen bookmarks will open in whatever browser you have set as your default.

Note that Add to Home Screen will likely not be supported on third-party browsers on iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 and later in European Union (EU) countries that use alternative browser engines other than WebKit. However, Home Screen web apps will still function but only using the WebKit architecture. If you're in the U.S., Add to Home Screen in third-party browsers will still function normally.

If a website has provided an icon in its manifest file or "apple-touch-icons" in the HTML document, that icon will be used on your iPhone's or iPad's Home Screen, as seen in the left image below.

Otherwise, the icon will display a matching color from the website's design and a monogram that uses the first letter of the webpage's title (not the domain name), as seen in the right image below. Unfortunately, changing the name for the Home Screen icon will not change the letter used.

Before iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4, Home Screen bookmark icons that had no preferred icons showed up as ugly screenshots of the webpages.

Add to Home Screen, or A2HS as Mozilla likes to call it, for third-party browsers has been available for a while now, so you'll find the option available in many browser apps. If a browser does support it, you'll most likely find the option in the share sheet where you'll find AirDrop, frequent contacts, apps, shortcuts, and other available actions. However, developers can also add a shortcut. Here's a small list of browsers that support Add to Home Screen as of February 2024:

  • Aloha Browser: Private VPN (via "Add to" menu, but gives an error)
  • DuckDuckGo Private Browser
  • Firefox: Private, Safe Browser
  • Google Chrome
  • Lion: Web Browser for Teens
  • Microsoft Edge: AI Browser (seen below)

Troubleshooting, how to add chrome bookmarks to iphone & ipad homescreen.

How to Add Chrome Bookmarks to iPhone & iPad Homescreen

Do you use Google Chrome instead of Safari as your preferred web browser on your iOS device? Perhaps you have even set Chrome as the default browser on your iPhone or iPad . In that case, you might be interested in learning how you can add Chrome bookmarks to your iPhone or iPad home screen.

Unlike Safari that comes pre-installed on iOS and iPadOS devices, third-party web browsers like Chrome and Firefox have multiple limitations. For example, you lose access to features like being able to add web page bookmarks to your home screen for quick access, whereas Safari has been capable of doing that since the beginning. However, we have a workaround that you can use to add any web page to your home screen and make sure it opens in Chrome rather than Safari.

Here we’ll be walking you through the steps to add Chrome bookmarks and other websites to the home screen on your iPhone and iPad.

To achieve this, we’ll be making use of the Shortcuts app that comes pre-installed on modern iOS and iPadOS versions from 13 and up. . If your device is running iOS 12 or if you can’t find the app on your device, download Shortcuts from the App Store .

add safari bookmark to iphone home screen

There you go. You’ve successfully learned how to add Chrome bookmarks to your iOS or iPadOS home screen using the Shortcuts app. It’s not as seamless as adding a home screen bookmark with Safari, but it works.

It’s worth noting that upon tapping this shortcut icon, you’ll be taken to the Shortcuts app for a split second before Chome opens up with your configured website. Likewise, you can create multiple shortcuts to open multiple URLs and use this method to launch your Chrome bookmarks quickly from the home screen.

That being said, if you use Safari and if you’re not aware of its native “add to home screen” feature, you can read this to learn how to add a website to the home screen of your iPhone or iPad from Safari. And if you use Safari as your primary browser anyway, that’ll probably be desired.

It’s unclear if Google Chrome and other third-party browsers will support this feature natively, but if they don’t you’ll have to rely on Apple’s Shortcuts app to create custom actions and scripts as shown here. For now, this is as close as you can get to launching websites directly in Chrome rather than Safari, though with modern iOS and ipadOS versions you can also set Chrome as the default browser on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, which is an appreciated feature for many users.

Were you able to set up the shortcut properly and open bookmarks directly in Chrome? What do you think about this neat workaround? Do you have another solution to launching websites and bookmarks directly into Chrome from the home screen of an iPhone or iPad? Share your experiences, opinions, and thoughts in the comments.

With v 15.2.1 it’s much easier: 1. Open Shortcuts 2. Tap + to add new shortcut 3. Tap “Apps” tab on the right 4. Tap Chrome 5. Tap “Open URLs in Chrome” 6. Paste in the URL you want into the URL field 7. Optionally Rename by tapping in upper-left corner 8. Tap Share button [box with up arrow] 9. Tap “Add to Home Screen” 10. Tap Done in Upper-right corner

Works great, many thanks.

What a ton of convoluted pahooey

Almost makes me want to stop using my Apple computer and switch to a Chromebook.

@Paul: no the shortcuts create in Safari will always launch safari even if the default browser is Chrome.

@all: does someone know the prefix for firefox? I tried firefox:// and firefoxs://, does not work.

They must have changed the app quite a bit or something. I installed Shortcuts from Apple (same icon) for my iPad to try this and the screens are so different, almost none of this applies.

Is it possible to do something similar with Microsoft Edge?

You should be able to with Shortcuts.

You can also change the default web browser to Microsoft Edge on iPhone or iPad, and then any Safari bookmarks saved to Home Screen should open in Edge instead of Safari. https://osxdaily.com/2020/12/07/how-change-default-web-browser-iphone-ipad/

OMG I’m seriously screaming this is exactly what I need and you guys definitely deserve countless arounds of applause!!! 👏 👏 👏

Now you can use Chrome instead of Safari in shortcuts.

Can’t you make a shortcut that we can just download to install? Once you do that will you do one for the brave browser?. Thank you very much

Just what I was looking for. Thanks!

Issue with adding bookmark to home screen

“add to home screen” option suddenly disappeared on iPhone SE running ios13. I flicked out the safari app (forced closed??) and force restarted the phone with power and home buttons to no avail.

This happened out of the blue. one minute I added a bookmark to home screen, and a minute later, I couldn’t add a different one. I’ve tried several miscellaneous websites and none have the option.

I just found the ad to home screen option.

One you tap the share icon (at the bottom of your browser window) then swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see the “add to home, and other options,

I learned this by accident —in all the searching I did online, not one instruction mentioned swiping up to reveal options.

If I swipe left, I immediately hit the App Search Library. I already went through Organise the Home Screen and App Library on your iPhone – Apple Support (UK), but I have no hidden pages. Interestingly, this happened a month or so ago (I thought removing the pages was an intended affect), but then the page with apps suddenly came back again. Now they are gone again. iOS 18 iPhone15 Pro Max Home Screen

Apple unveiled iOS 18 at its  Worldwide Developers Conference 2024  keynote event in June, and the tech giant released the third developer beta of the software on Monday. At WWDC, the tech giant stated that the next iPhone operating system will include a lot of new features, like more ways to customize your home screen , updates to the Messages app and an updated Siri with Apple Intelligence . Apple said online that the next operating system will be available to the general public this fall .

While many people won't get iOS 18 until later this year, developers can download the second iOS 18 developer beta now. We recommend downloading a beta on something other than your primary device. Since this isn't the final version of iOS 18, these features might be buggy and battery life may be short, and it's best to keep those troubles on a secondary device.

Here's what we know about all the new features and improvements iOS 18 could bring to your iPhone this fall.

Customizable home and lock screens

Apple Dark look for iOS 18

While you've been able to customize your iPhone's home and lock screens with widgets and different backgrounds, iOS 18 will let you customize your home screen's apps and layout, as well as your phone's lock screen functions.

During WWDC, Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, showed how iOS 18 lets you arrange your iPhone's apps and widgets on your home screen however you want. Previously, these icons would fill your home screen from top to bottom, sometimes obstructing backgrounds you might like. But iOS 18 should let you arrange your icons around your background or in any way you want -- something Android has offered for many years .

You can also easily customize the appearance of your app's icons. You can give your icons a dark mode filter, or tint your icons to match your wallpaper.

Federighi also said iOS 18 will let you swap out the camera and flashlight functions on your iPhone's lock screen. That way you aren't accidentally turning on your iPhone's flashlight on while putting it in your pocket -- but you might open another app instead.

Updated Control Center

Apple also announced that iOS 18 updates your iPhone's Control Center. With the next operating system, you'll be able to access more controls for things, like whatever music you're listening to and specific apps. You can also change which apps you see, as well as their size, so you have quicker access to the buttons you use more often.

Messages gets an upgrade

Your iPhone's Messages app will also get an update with iOS 18. With the next operating system, you'll be able to schedule messages to send later, react to messages with more Tapbacks and format messages and specific words in your messages with text effects. So if you want to emphasize something in a text, you can bold it, underline or use other effects to get your point across.

The next OS will also bring  Messages via satellite to many iPhones. The feature works similar to Apple's  Emergency SOS via satellite feature introduced on the  iPhone 14  and  15 series . But while Emergency SOS is for making an emergency call even if you don't have a signal, Messages via satellite will let you send a message to anyone, even without a signal. So you'll be able to message your spouse or parents to let them know how your camping trip is going.

Apple also  briefly mentioned it is bringing RCS  -- rich communication support -- to Messages.

Lock and hide certain apps

Letting someone borrow your iPhone can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you don't want them to see or access certain apps. But iOS 18 will allow you to lock and hide apps.

If you lock an app, it will then require your Face ID or passcode to unlock and access it. And if you just don't want someone to know you have a certain app on your iPhone, you can stash it in a Hidden apps folder in your App Library. This is similar to removing apps from your home screen without deleting them from your iPhone, but it arranges all your hidden apps in one place.

Redesigned Photos app

It can be fun to look at memories in your Photos app, but navigating through the app can be challenging if you take a lot of photos. So Apple announced iOS 18 will  redesign your iPhone's Photos app .

The redesign should make it easier to find specific photos by organizing your photos in more ways, like month and year. Photos will also be organized by theme, so if you're looking for photos from a trip, you should be able to find them faster.

The updated Photos app in iOS 18 will also let you filter out receipts and screenshots so they don't clog up your Library.

New password manager app

Apple is turning its password keychain feature into a full-blown app called Passwords . According to Apple, Passwords safely stores all your credentials in one place. It can also sync your passwords across your Apple devices. That way if you change your Netflix password on one device but not on another, the password will follow you so you don't forget it.

Apple announced that it's rolling out Apple Intelligence , its spin on generative AI, in iOS 18. But on Apple's website, the tech giant said these improvements will be available only on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max  for now.

Apple Intelligence will bring improvements to Siri to make the assistant more capable and helpful, it will allow you to create new images called Genmojis and it will bring new writing tools and capabilities to those iPhones.

Notes app upgrades

Apple's iOS 18 will improve your Notes app. Notes will get live audio transcripts, collapsible sections to keep the app organized and the ability to highlight certain phrases. You'll also be able to solve mathematical problems in the app while you type.

These upgrades are similar to the Notes app upgrades Apple announced for  iPadOS 18 .

According to Facts and Factors , mobile gaming as an industry is expected to grow by over 13% by 2030. And Apple seems to recognize that with the introduction of Game Mode in iOS 18.

Game Mode will minimize background activities on your iPhone to improve your game's performance. It will also have improved responsiveness with AirPods and wireless gaming controllers, Apple says.

iPhone Mirroring

iPhone mirrored on Mac

With iOS 18, iPhone users with a Mac will be able to access their iPhone remotely from their Mac. Apple is calling this feature iPhone Mirroring, and it will work in conjunction with the upcoming MacOS Sequoia. So instead of sending a file from your iPhone to your Mac, you'll be able to just access the file right on your Mac without any extra steps in between.

SharePlay screen sharing

SharePlay was introduced with iOS 15 in 2021 and lets Apple users share their screen with other people via FaceTime. And iOS 18 is giving SharePlay an upgrade.

"With enhanced screen sharing capabilities, you can draw on someone's screen so they can see what they can do on theirs, or control their screen and take actions yourself," Apple wrote online.

More ways to organize Mail

Apple said that with iOS 18, your iPhone's Mail app will organize your emails better. Your app will have new categories for things like receipts, newsletters and more. That way you don't have to dig through your emails and find an invitation to a party you forgot to respond to.

Tap to Cash

With iOS 18, it will be easier to send cash to your friends and family with Tap to Cash. With this new feature, you can send Apple Cash directly to others by bringing your iPhones close together, similar to how you can quickly AirDrop a photo or message to someone, or NameDrop your contact information to others, by bringing your iPhones close together.

Updates coming to Apple Wallet

Speaking of cash, your Wallet app is getting an upgrade in iOS 18, too. In the app, you'll be able to view your rewards or points balance, and you'll be able to redeem those points with Apple Pay online or in one of your apps. The app will also let you access any installment financing options your bank might offer.

Apple is also bringing new features to your event tickets in Wallet. Apple wrote online that the new features includes, "an event guide combining helpful information about the venue with recommendations from Apple apps."

With the second developer beta of iOS 18, Wallet also now lets you easily add a chipped debit or credit card to the app. Now, if you go into Wallet, tap the plus sign in the top right corner, tap Debit or Credit Card , then tap Continue , Wallet will ask you to bring the chipped card near your iPhone to add that card. If your card doesn't have a chip though, you can tap Enter Card Details Manually across the bottom of the screen.

Safari gets highlights and a redesigned Reader

With iOS 18, your iPhone's Safari app will detect important information on a page and highlight it for you. For example, directions and quick links to people and movies should be highlighted and easily findable.

Reader will also provide a table of contents and summaries of articles in Safari.

Topographic maps in Maps

When Apple introduced iOS 17 in 2023, it brought offline maps to your iPhones Maps app. With iOS 18, Apple said your iPhone's Maps app will get topographical information, too. Maps will also get detailed hiking trail information, including routes from over 50 US national parks, so you can plan your next hike.

Journal app improvements

Apple also announced that iOS 18 will bring some changes to your iPhone's Journal app . Once upgraded, the app will let you log your state of mind, as well as help you track your goals. It will also give you certain stats, like writing streaks. You'll also be able to search within Journal for previous entries so you can find older thoughts and more.

add safari bookmark to iphone home screen

Those are a few of the new features some developers will see in the second iOS 18 beta. That doesn't mean these are the only features coming to the next iOS update or that these changes will stick when iOS 18 is released to the public. As of now, Apple has only said iOS 18 will release this fall.

For more on Apple, check out everything Apple announced at WWDC 2024 , how to download the iOS 18 developer beta now and why you might not want to install it just yet .
