Nissan Patrol Super Safari review: the best of both worlds

Off-road or on the motorway, the 2022 model of the region’s legendary suv is here to conquer everything in its path.

Since its resurrection in 2017, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari has continued to dominate as the region’s favourite off-road vehicle. The Japanese manufacturer bowed to popular demand and brought the wilder Nissan Patrol back into production, and tweaked and tuned every new version for the better.

The 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari follows the trend. For starters, it sits slightly higher than its predecessors. This not only gives you a better view of what’s ahead, but also creates more clearance underneath the car to comfortably deal with extremely uneven terrain. Or an extra-large speed bump.

Engine: 6-cylinder, 4.8-litre Transmission: 5-speed automatic and manual Power: 280 brake horsepower Torque: 451Nm Price: from Dh153,00 On sale: now

Nissan has also introduced cruise control, anti-lock brakes, smart tyre-pressure monitoring and a number of other driving aids that make for a more comfortable ride. It’s now available in either a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The result is that the 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari feels more at home than ever when you’re driving it on asphalt. We were fairly surprised just how smooth the drive was and the silence in the cabin as the 4.8-litre, 280bhp V6 engine roared away was impressive.

Choose between cloth, leather and PVC upholstery. Photo: Nissan

Now, if you just read that paragraph above and are worried that the Super Safari has been declawed, fear not — it’s equally as fun off the road as it is on it. There’s not much (if anything) that the robust suspension and new telescopic shock absorbers can’t handle. You feel more in control than ever thanks to the intelligent system that manages engine speed when under or oversteering. When we took it for a gentle spin off-road it instantly felt safely at home. The temptation to plant our foot and bounce over every hill in sight was palpable. This one lives for rough terrain.

Nissan has been very clever with its 2022 Patrol Super Safari. While improving the driving experience for thrill-seekers it has introduced the safety and comfort features found in the more luxurious Nissan Patrol, which will appeal to drivers. You can choose between cloth, leather or PVC upholstery for inside the cavernous cabin, with each seat providing comfy and ample space. And we love the straightforward nature of the Bluetooth connection that hooks your phone up to the in-car entertainment system easily.

Yes, it’s more of an everyday SUV now. You can use it for doing the school run, transporting friends and family or nipping out to do the grocery shopping. But it’s also ready to be loaded up with camping equipment, shovels and recovery sand boards at a moment’s notice for an off-road adventure.

Nissan’s evolution of the Super Safari has so far been well balanced. And this 2022 version delivers its most complete version yet. There’s no need to rip up the rule book when it comes to improvements, and by focusing on functionality and interior comfort upgrades, the Super Safari will live on for a long time.

2021 Nissan Patrol “Super Safari” Is The New SUV You Really Want

We have lamented the Nissan Patrol SUV not being available in the US. Instead, we are stuck with the overpriced, bloated, overstuffed Armada. The 2021 Nissan Patrol “Super Safari” is the new SUV you really want. This is a full-size SUV 4×4 available in the Middle East and the Philippines. They’re rugged, dependable, and as capable as any stripped-down Toyota Land Cruiser.

The 2021 Patrol Super Safari has seen limited changes which is probably good

nissan safari review

Nissan has chosen 1) not to change it since the late-1990s, and 2) not to make it available anywhere else but the aforementioned countries. For 2021 Nissan has added some great features and upgrades making us want it even more. The change you’ll notice first is that black has been added to the very limited pallet of Patrol colors. So now paint colors have really expanded with black added to either gold or white. No, we’re not kidding.

The other noticeable changes include 17-inch alloy wheels, now finished in black. Also, the Super Safari decal on the quarters has been updated. Nissan doesn’t hesitate to pull out all of the stops for some exciting and dynamic changes from 2020 to 2021 models. Not.

Inside the center stack is housed an eight-inch infotainment screen and includes Apple CarPlay. New cloth upholstery along with tan leather are two new features. An option is the addition of Super Safari embossing in the seats.

The Middle East get the Patrol-both as a two- or four-door

nissan safari review

So why does the Middle East get the Patrol-both as a two- or four-door, and the rest of the world doesn’t? Thierry Sabbagh, Nissan’s Managing Director in the Middle East, told Carbuzz that Super Safari’s longevity in the Middle East is due to its “deep-rooted heritage.” He continues that the Patrol “adds a modern look to the powerful performance and durability of the SUV – maintaining its credibility to be the ideal partner for an off-road driving adventure across the region.” In other words, he doesn’t have a clue why.

We suppose if he knew why he’d be head of marketing or he’d be a VP at Nissan. Instead, he is tasked with providing no reason for the reason the Patrol is popular there and why it is not sold here. But we digress.

One reason we can readily see why the Patrol is so popular in the Middle East is price

nissan safari review

One reason we can readily see is because of the price . The 2021 Patrol Super Safari lists for 171k AED, which translates to $47k in the US. Some may find that a bit high considering the Nissan Armada starts at just $1,500 more. But let’s get real; most Armadas are loaded up to the $65,000 to $80,000 price. That is getting close to twice the price of a Patrol.

We can lament further but instead look to the immediate future for a new Nissan Titan and its SUV offshoot Armada. Nissan has a lot of catching up to do as it has let its catalog of vehicles somewhat die on the vine. That in turn has caused a cash crunch that puts the future of the company in question. There is hope that Nissan can get its act together and start a product cadence of new, competitive vehicles that match feature to feature the best in each class.

Rare Rides: Patrol the Desert in This 1989 Nissan Safari

Corey Lewis

The Patrol has forever been Nissan’s answer to the Toyota Land Cruiser, as both brands compete for rough and tumble SUV customers. Today’s Rare Ride represents just how many creature comforts can be added to a go-anywhere truck.

Presenting the Nissan Safari from 1989.

rare rides patrol the desert in this 1989 nissan safari

The Patrol started production in 1951, aping the looks and function of the Willys Jeep. It borrowed the name too; sometimes it was just called a Jeep. Mostly intended for military use, the bare-bones first generation lasted through 1960.

With the debut of the second generation, production expanded to include more body styles: Patrol now offered hardtops, vans, and a pickup truck. Distribution expanded as well, and the Patrol was sold (as a Nissan) at Datsun dealerships in North America between 1962 and 1969.

It was 1980 before the third-generation Patrol began production, known as the 160 series. Comfort and equipment came into play for the first time, as this generation saw the introduction of an automatic transmission. Accompanying the transmission option were new trim levels. Deluxe examples included luxuries like air conditioning and power steering.

A fourth-generation (Y60) Patrol started production in 1987, bringing us to today’s Rare Ride. In a turn from prior generations, a coil suspension replaced the old leaf springs and brought refinement to travel. Power steering was standard and, if buyers spent enough money, they’d have the benefit of front and rear disc brakes. Automatic transmissions in this generation were all of the four-speed variety, while manuals had five forward gears. Engines ranged between 2.8 and 4.2 liters, all of them inline-sixes.

The Japanese market received the fourth-generation Patrol as the Safari. While models for other markets had a 12-volt electrical system, the Safari had a 24-volt. Today’s Rare Ride is a decked-out short-wheelbase example from the end of the Eighties. It has the largest 4.2-liter diesel engine. Said diesel propels all the tape stripes, power equipment, and tweedy seats through an automatic transmission. The Safari asks $14,900 and is located in Philadelphia.

Corey Lewis

Interested in lots of cars and their various historical contexts. Started writing articles for TTAC in late 2016, when my first posts were QOTDs. From there I started a few new series like Rare Rides, Buy/Drive/Burn, Abandoned History, and most recently Rare Rides Icons. Operating from a home base in Cincinnati, Ohio, a relative auto journalist dead zone. Many of my articles are prompted by something I'll see on social media that sparks my interest and causes me to research. Finding articles and information from the early days of the internet and beyond that covers the little details lost to time: trim packages, color and wheel choices, interior fabrics. Beyond those, I'm fascinated by automotive industry experiments, both failures and successes. Lately I've taken an interest in AI, and generating "what if" type images for car models long dead. Reincarnating a modern Toyota Paseo, Lincoln Mark IX, or Isuzu Trooper through a text prompt is fun. Fun to post them on Twitter too, and watch people overreact. To that end, the social media I use most is Twitter, @CoreyLewis86. I also contribute pieces for Forbes Wheels and Forbes Home.

RH drive... perfect for a rural mail carrier who also needs 4x4 capability!!!

Bumpy ii

One of the carriers around here has a JDM Mitsubishi Pajero for that.

JohnTaurus

@bumpy ii I've been tempted to become a mail carrier just so I can justify buying some quirky RHD Japanese metal. But, in reality, $14k+ is a bit much for an older vehicle that will see daily service and may quite possibly be near impossible to find parts for. Yeah, a new RHD Wrangler is twice that easy, but it has a warranty and service/parts availability virtually anywhere on this continent.

Gedrven

Does it still have the 24V electrical system? While such things have merits for reliability reasons, maintainability would take a huge hit unless you have military-like economies of scale. What do you use for lightbulbs, for instance?

If i were to guess, it's only a partial 24v for the starting and charging circuits, and the cluster and other electrical accessories are 12v. Some older diesel tractors were set up that way.

Article content

History of Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Origins and early history of nissan patrol super safari.

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari has its roots in the broader Nissan Patrol series, which has been an iconic part of Nissan’s lineup since the early 1950s. Established as a rival against vehicles like the series Land Rover, the Patrol was marketed as a no-nonsense off-roader built to take on the most challenging terrains. Over the years, the Patrol series evolved significantly from its utilitarian beginnings into a more sophisticated and comfortable vehicle, while maintaining its rugged capabilities. The Super Safari variant, introduced in the late 1980s, marked a significant milestone in the Patrol series and quickly became a favorite among off-road enthusiasts.

The Evolution of Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Over the years, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari saw numerous modifications and improvements in design, performance, and technology. From the initial y60 model to the current y61 version, each generation aimed to improve upon the last by incorporating state-of-the-art designs and features.

One of the first major facelifts occurred with the transition from the y60 to the y61 model. This carried significantly enhanced features, including a new exterior design, interior refurbishments, and engine upgrades. The y61 model provided both luxury and reliability without compromising the vehicle’s renowned off-road prowess.

Key Influencers Behind Its Development

Nissan’s primary objective behind the Super Safari was to create a vehicle that combined luxury and comfort with off-road capacity. This model was the result of extensive research and development by Nissan’s team of engineers and designers who understood the need for a robust, comfortable, and versatile 4×4 vehicle.

One of the key influencers in the Patrol Super Safari’s development was consumers’ feedback and their need for improvements. Nissan consistently incorporated this feedback into the design and performance of the Super Safari, leading to ongoing refinement of its specifications, power, and comfort levels.

The Unique Features Each Model Introduced

Every new iteration of the Nissan Patrol Super Safari introduced distinct features that set it apart from its predecessor. The y60 model, for example, was the first to introduce the coil-sprung suspension instead of the traditional leaf springs, resulting in better suspension and a smoother ride.

The y61 model saw an introduction of a more powerful engine, a turbo diesel option, as well as a direct injection petrol engine. Additionally, Nissan added creature comforts normally found in more upscale vehicles like an adjustable steering wheel, power windows, and dual airbags.

Perhaps the most notable feature, unique to the Super Safari, is its off-road prowess. The Super Safari’s robust engine, combined with a highly capable 4WD system and high ground clearance, allows it to tackle the harshest and diverse terrains with ease.

Introduction to Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Keeping with tradition, the Nissan Patrol Super Safari excels at delivering a powerful, luxurious, and unmatched off-road experience. Driven in the UAE: 2021 Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Auto test drives.

Amidst clamour for luxury SUVs, this fabled iteration of an iconic off-roader stands tall

auto safari

Introduced towards the end of 1951, the Nissan 4W60 — later named Patrol — had a relatively slow start. But over the decades, helped by the much improved G60, the MQ, and the GQ iterations, the Patrol nameplate established itself as a badge to be reckoned with among off-road enthusiasts. However, it was the fifth-generation Y61 version that truly cemented its now legendary status as a go anywhere, do anything utility vehicle. While it was popular in markets such as Australia and South America too, in the Middle East, the Nissan Patrol almost became an integral part of the landscape. This was especially so here in the UAE. The Y61 Patrol Safari was so popular among the country’s off-roading enthusiasts that it was safe at the time to assume that it would only evolve at a pace similar to that of the Mercedes Gelandewagen. It seemed too good to be altered, and was etched into the collective psyche of the region’s dune-bashers.

However, as rival brands started churning out capable SUVs loaded with luxury trappings that appealed as much to the affluent city driver as it did to the daring explorer, the Safari started looking archaic. The modern, comfortable, luxurious, and sophisticated Y62 interpretation of the legendary Patrol was launched in 2010, complete with a new platform, a design overhaul, an interior that oozed luxury, a new V8 engine, a seven-speed automatic transmission and a new, more capable four-wheel drive system. Sales figures show that was a wise decision, but what seemed a wiser decision to Patrol aficionados was the one taken by the Japanese carmaker to keep the Y61 in production alongside the new version.

auto safari

The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line of the Y61 that is specific to the Middle East. While it essentially remains the same for the 2021 model year, a few tweaks and additions here and there have made sure it remains suitably updated. These include three new colour combinations, with a black exterior colour option joining the existing white and gold body colours. Also available as an option is a new gold accent across the roof, bumpers and spare tyre cover as an alternative to the dual tone accent from previous models, letting owners create the combination of their choice. The classic ‘Super Safari’ decal along the side of the car has also got a subtle refresh. New 17-inch alloy wheels with a ‘diamond cut’ pattern and black paint rounds out the exterior upgrades.

auto safari

The interiors of the 2021 Super Safari have also been updated with new tan leather and cloth options to choose from. If you choose the tan leather option, the seats come with a special Super Safari embossing. A new 8-inch display and audio system with Apple Carplay add a touch of modernity to the otherwise delectably utilitarian cabin.

auto safari

The rest of the good-old Safari remains the same. The 4.8-litre inline six-cylinder mated to five-speed automatic is superbly capable, refined and smooth on- and off-road. While an adventure-oriented three-door variant is still available, the five-door model is as practical and comfortable as any modern SUV and is still a great family car. It can easily seat seven passengers thanks to the two foldout cargo-area seats, which are also reasonably comfortable. It also comes equipped with automatic climate control and a built-in cool box, making it an ideal companion for impulsive detours into the wilderness with family or friends.

auto safari

And the rough country brings the best out of the Super Safari, with its straight-line drive transfer allowing on-the-fly shifting from 2WD to 4WD with just one shift of a lever. The navigation system, rear locking differential, front and rear-pintle tow hooks as well as front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera make sure you are ready for anything that the mountains, the desert or the back woods throw at you. Stability control and a tyre-pressure monitor are standard, as are dual front airbags, ABS, an immobiliser and cruise control.

auto safari

A single model lasting six decades and still going strong is no mean feat. Not more than a handful of cars have managed to achieve this in the history of automobiles. And even as the Patrol nameplate keeps evolving in its successive iterations, if Nissan chooses to keep the Y61 going with periodic updates, there will still be takers. And they will tell you why this is one of the best SUVs on sale today.

Like a blast from the past, from a time when sport utility vehicles (SUVs) were the most valuable players (MVPs) and the market wasn’t crowded with crossovers, comes the Nissan Patrol Super Safari. The Super Safari, often referred to as the "VTC", is based on the 5th generation Y61 Nissan Patrol produced from 1997 to 2010. The enduring customer demand in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries brought about its revival in 2016 and it has been in production ever since. We got the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the ‘Al Ostoura’ edition, which translates to ‘The Legend’ in Arabic, a GCC-exclusive variant that pays homage to this legendary vehicle and here are our thoughts…

First off, Nissan have gotten the looks right by adhering to the saying, “If ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. This is a high–riding SUV with a two-box profile with softened edges – a true recall of the vehicles of 00s. It looks like it belongs in the desert, as all SUVs should, and even after decades, its proportions have remained graceful. And thanks to some tasteful mods, an even sportier outlook has been rendered. Some of those modifications include the dual-tone paintjob (with the contrasting roof and fenders), body stripes, 17-inch alloys and a neat rear spoiler. The Patrol SS is what I’d call a museum piece that is road legal…and I love it for that.

Old-school vibe

The cabin has also been mostly untouched, looking decidedly near-vintage with large plastic parts and trims that aren’t necessarily congruous with the overall design, which is a sign of the times in which it was conceived. It has an old-school four-spoke steering wheel with a printed wood finish and a retrofitted eight-inch infotainment system that sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s even got that physical handbrake and analogue instrumentation one would desire. And finally, the tan leather seats add great visual appeal besides being comfy. Overall, the insides have aged, but it’s charming. Spatially, it satisfies comfort requirements with a good seating posture for all occupants and a usable third row making it a fully functional family vehicle.

The old school ride runs on old-school power. It still comes powered by the famed 4.8-litre inline 6-cylinder engine featuring Valve Timing Control (where it gets the VTC name from). Peak output is rated at a seemingly healthy 280 horsepower, and 451 Nm of torque, which is then multiplied by the 5-speed automatic.

Slow starter

When it comes to propulsion, the harsh truth is that this Patrol is among the slowest vehicles we have ever tested, with the ticker just hitting 100 km/h in about 11 seconds. There is some power higher up the revs, but that even that is short-lived. Then there is the electronic power steering that feels like you’re steering a ship. It feels disconnected and cumbersome to operate. Trust me, you don’t want to do three-point turns in this one. On the flip side, this body-on-frame SUV has got a decent ride, and the ventilated disc brakes are strong enough to shred a decent amount of speed in decent time.

Even with these handicaps, the asthmatic power delivery and vague steering, there is something about the way it moves that makes you feel like it won’t stop for anything. Plonk it off road and it will continue to plough through that sand till it gets you out and “Why wouldn’t it?”. The ground clearance is good. The approach and departure angles commendable at 37 and 31 degrees, front and back, and then there’s that reliable 4x4 system that comes with low ratio gearing and a rear differential lock. Any doubts? Ask the many who have purchased the Super Safari and live their lives on the dunes. That lack of emphatic power though has me doubting its capabilities of climbing extreme inclines like Big Red. But with a little help from tuner friends the Patrol SS promises to take you places that are Instagram worthy. An electric-powered winch is also present for those not-so IG worthy moments and a rear pintle hook for towing disabled vehicles.

Keep in mind that being a large vehicle with ageing mechanicals (without a sixth gear), this is a gas guzzler by default. On average it returned a dismal 16l/100km. The five-door variant does have a sub tank adding another 40 litres to the 95-litre capacity to help with range though.

The summer test

Nissan have retrofitted some features, so that you don’t feel like you’re riding Fred Flintstone’s car. A wireless charger is present, but my tablet-sized Samsung S23 Ultra wouldn’t fit and hence, I couldn’t get it charged. There aren’t any USB ports either, but it does come with Apple CarPlay. They’ve also equipped it with a rear camera, but the view is small and washed-out. I’d rather turn my head around and rely on the parking sensors instead. It also comes with other necessities like cruise control, a tire pressure monitoring system, dual airbags, etc. Thankfully, being a Nissan, the cooling from the automatic climate control is good and you’d be more appreciative of it as the summer sun peaks.

At the end of the day, when you have it parked in your garage and you walk away, you’re sure to turn back and have a look at the Patrol Super Safari. It has that undeniable novelty factor that one simply cannot ignore. It looks proper old school, all raw and rugged, and is ready to go places out of reach otherwise. It also has a usable third row, and a comfortable ride which makes for a practical family vehicle. But I also see it as a lost opportunity. Nissan hasn’t done enough. If they could just fix the basics i.e. the power steering, the engine and the rear camera, to begin with, I reckon it can easily outsell many of the contemporary crossover SUVs for the next decade or so. Sadly, this is the last year of production before the Y61 Super Safari is eternally vanquished.

Good: Charming and rugged old-school looks, off-road ability; family functionality; street cred

Bad: Underpowered; cumbersome steering; dismal fuel economy; low-quality rear camera view
