Significance of Amarnath Yatra

For the devotees of Lord Shiva in particular and all the Hindus in general, Amarnath Yatra holds huge spiritual significance. The importance and presence of the Amarnath Cave and the Yatra is mentioned even in the Puranas as well as many other important religious texts. After the rediscovery of the cave in the modern times, it became a significant site of Hindu pilgrimage in the Kashmir valley. Every year, devotees of Lord Shiva reach the Amarnath cave, boldly facing the cold weather and tough pathways, to seek peace and tranquility as well as looking to wash away their sins.

There is a legend associated with the Amarnath Cave. According to the legend, when Goddess Parvati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, asked Him that when and why He started wearing the beads of heads, Lord Shiva answered that whenever she is born, He increases one more head to the total of bead heads. To this Goddess Parvati said that she has to die, again and again, to be reborn, but, Lord Shiva is immortal. She requested Him to tell the secret of His immortality. The Lord replied that the secret lies in the Amar Katha (immortal story).

After consenting to tell Goddess Parvati the Amar Katha, the Lord took refuge in the Amarnath Cave. He created a divine Rudra form called Kalagni and ordered him to destroy all living beings in the vicinity so that nobody is able to listen to the story. However, an egg remained protected under the deer skin seat of the Lord and the pair of pigeons born out of this egg became immortal after listening to the Amar Katha. These pigeons can still be seen by many pilgrims although survival of any bird form in this high altitude and cold temperature is virtually impossible.

Starting – Ending Date of Amarnath Yatra in 2021

Amarnath Yatra is conducted every year in the month of Shravan, which is an auspicious month, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Every year, the Amarnath Yatra usually starts on the auspicious occasion of Skanda Sashti as per the Hindu calendar and concludes on Sharavan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan). From the year 2013 onwards, every pilgrim to Amarnath Yatra has to carry a compulsory medical certificate in order to prove his/her fitness in order to undertake the pilgrimage. This medical certificate can only be issued by registered medical practitioners and authorized institutions, the list of which is provided by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

Moreover any individual below the age of 13 and above 75 is barred from taking the pilgrimage due to its arduous nature. Women with about six weeks of pregnancy are also not allowed to embark on the Yatra due to medical reasons.

Registration Process of Amarnath Yatra:

The Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB) arranges for the registration of the Yatris (pilgrims) through the medium of authorized, different branches and banks throughout India. These banks and branches are fully responsible to issue the Yatra Permit of Amarnath Ji (YP) based on the details provided by the applicant on the application form. The following are some vital steps involved in the registration for Amarnath Yatra in the year 2021.

• Amarnath Yatra registration is expected to begin on March 1, 2021, from 440 branches of the Punjab National Bank, the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, and the YES Bank across the country, and is done on a first-come-first-serve basis. Every year the number of branches increases so that pilgrims can easily get the Yatra Permit.
• There are two modes of registration – online and offline. The pilgrims can register themselves on the official website of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). With one mobile number, a maximum of 4 people can register. For offline registration, pilgrims can visit the approved bank or registration centers. Make sure you will carry your Medical Certificate approved by an affiliated doctor or hospital, photocopy of IF card, and 4 passport size photographs.
• Each branch has been allotted a fixed quota of permits to issue for each day and for each route. The bank ensures that the number of permits issued does not exceed the number allotted per day and per route, every day.
• From each route, 7500 pilgrims can visit for Yatra. In total, 15,000 pilgrims are allowed in a day inclusive of trekking and helicopter.
• One Yatra Permit (YP) is valid for one pilgrim only.
• Every Yatri has to compulsorily submit the application form along with the original health certificate to obtain the permit. The format for the application form and compulsory health certificate is available online as well as is available free of cost from the designated bank branches.
• No Yatri below the age of 13 and above the age of 75 is allowed to undertake the Yatra. Moreover, women with a pregnancy of 6 weeks or more are also barred from carrying out the pilgrimage.
• Before applying for the permit, each Yatri must have completely filled in the application form.
• The registration at the bank can be done between 3 PM to 6 PM normally. Although, you should confirm the timings.

The total length of this trail is from 36 to 48 kilometers depending upon the devotion and willingness of the pilgrim. One will find the maximum number of devotees, ponies, pithoo carriers along this route only. Younger, aged, sick or people with past history of illness perform their pilgrimage along this path.

Shortest Route for Amarnath Yatra via Baltal

Starting from Srinagar, many devotees also follow this route that runs through Baltal, Domial, Barari, Sangam and stretches 14 kilometers in length. This route is relatively tough due to its steep ascent and it is generally avoided by the older and sick people. This route is taken more by young, healthy individuals looking for some adventure.

Amarnath Yatra by Helicopter 2021

Amarnath yatris can book helicopter rides from both routes. These rides are organized from Neelgrath (near Baltal Camps) and Pahalgam and it normally takes around 10 minutes to reach Panjtarni, located about 5 kilometers away from the Cave. Day 01:Srinagar – Sonmarg

On our very first day of the tour we reach Srinagar airport. Our executives will assist you from here and transfer you to Sonmarg. We check in at our hotel / deluxe tent here followed by welcome drinks and snacks. In the evening we leave for Thajewas Glacier. We come back to our hotel in Sonmarg for dinner and a stay overnight.

Day 02: Sonmarg – Holy Cave – Srinagar

After having breakfast early in the morning, we will move from Sonmarg to Baltal. From here we move for our onward journey to the holy caves via helicopter from Baltal helipad. After the ‘darshan’ of the deity we come back to Sonmarg. The official timings of operation of the helicopter are between 6AM to 5 PM and it usually takes 2 to 4 hours for ‘darshan’. On reaching Sonmarg after the ‘darshan’ you will meet our executive, who will then transfer you from Baltal to Srinagar by road in our own vehicle. On reaching Srinagar you will check in to your hotel / deluxe houseboat for dinner and a stay overnight.

Day 03: Srinagar

After a sumptuous breakfast you are free to explore the city on your own for some time till your departure from Srinagar. We will then leave for Srinagar airport for your onward journey to next destination.

Do's for the Yatris

• It is mandatory for every registered Yatri to collect his / her RFID Card from designated locations in Jammu / Kashmir Division before embarking on the Yatra.
• Carry your Aadhaar details for collecting RFID Cards
• Wear your RFID tag on your neck at all times during Yatra for safety & security.
• Do carry sufficient woolen clothing as the temperature may sometimes abruptly fall to below 5 degree Celsius.
• Do carry umbrella, wind cheater, raincoat, and waterproof shoes as the weather in the Yatra area is unpredictable.
• Do keep your clothes and eatables in a suitable water proof bag to avoid your belongings getting wet.
• Do keep in your pocket a note containing the name / address, mobile telephone number of any Yatri proceeding for Darshan on the same date as you are doing, for emergency purposes.
• Do carry your identity card / driving license and Yatra permit with you.

Don'ts for the Yatris

• No registered yatri shall be allowed to emabark on Yatra without RFID card.
• Don’t ignore the symptoms of high altitude illness.
• Don’t drink alcohol, caffeinated drink, or smoke.
• Don’t stop at places which are marked by warning notices.
• Don’t use slippers because there are steep rises and falls on the route to the Holy Cave. Only wear trekking shoes with laces.

About Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board

Of all Hindu deities, Lord Shiva is highly revered and popular amongst the devotees. To pay obeisance to Holy Ice Lingam, the devotees undertake the arduous annual pilgrimage to the Holy Cave Shrine located in Kashmir Himalayas in the months of June-August. The Holy Shrine is managed by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) which was constituted by an Act of Jammu & Kashmir State Legislature in 2000. Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, UT of J&K is the Chairman of the Shrine Board. . The Shrine Board is responsible for better management of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, upgradation of facilities for holy pilgrims and matter connected therewith and incidental thereto. Assisted by a Chief Executive Officer, Additional Chief Executive Officer, and distinguished Board Members, the Board is endeavored towards fulfilling its mandate.
