Each visa has specific eligibility criteria and requirements, so choosing the right one is crucial. Here are some of the most common types of Australian visas:

Tourist Visa

If you’re planning a short-term visit for holidays, sightseeing, or visiting friends and family, a tourist visa (subclass 600) is the way to go. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to three, six, or twelve months, depending on your circumstances.

Skilled Visa

You may be eligible for a skilled visa if you possess certain skills and qualifications that are in demand in Australia. The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) are popular options for skilled workers who want to permanently live and work in Australia.

Student Visa

Planning to study in Australia? A student visa (subclass 500) is a must. This visa allows you to enroll in a registered course and stay in Australia for the duration of your study program.

If you’re in a genuine and ongoing relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, you may be eligible for a partner visa. This visa allows you to live and work in Australia indefinitely.

Working Holiday Visa

If you’re between 18 and 30 years old and want to explore the Australian way of life while working part-time, a working holiday visa (subclass 417) or work and holiday visa (subclass 462) might be the perfect fit for you.

These are just a few examples of the many visas available. It’s important to identify the visa category that best suits your purpose and circumstances before proceeding with the application process.

Choosing the right visa for your needs and timeframe

Selecting the right visa is essential to ensure a successful application. Consider the purpose of your visit, the duration of your stay, and your future plans in Australia. Here are a few factors to consider when choosing a visa:

Consider the length of time you intend to stay in Australia. Some visas have maximum stay limits, while others allow for longer stays or even permanent residency.

Eligibility

Assess your eligibility based on factors such as age, skills, education, health, and character requirements. Some visas have specific skill or English language proficiency requirements that you need to meet.

  • Stay informed by checking case status online, reschedule appointments when needed, and be prepared with required documents for biometrics.

Navigating the uncertainty of waiting periods after biometric screenings during the immigration biometrics process or visa application can be bewildering for many applicants. The often opaque nature of this waiting period leads to a common query: “How long does it take to get a response after biometrics?” Understanding the nuances of biometrics response time can alleviate some of the stress associated with the immigration process. This article will parse the typical timelines and address common concerns related to the biometrics portion of the visa application process.

What Happens After Your Biometrics Appointment?

Biometrics Response Time: How Long to Wait?

After undergoing a biometrics appointment, your fingerprints, photograph, and signature are utilized by immigration authorities to conduct necessary background checks. This step is vital for verifying your identity and ensuring you have no serious criminal history or immigration violations that could impact your application. The data collected is cross-referenced with both the FBI’s criminal database and the Department of Homeland Security’s database of immigration transgressions. The completion of this process is critical before any further steps can be taken regarding your immigration application.

Typical Biometrics Response Times

The response time following your biometrics appointment can be influenced by various factors including the type of application submitted and the processing center handling it. Here’s a breakdown of usual processing times for different applications:

  • Green Card Interview Notice : 5 to 10 months
  • Work Authorization : 90 days
  • I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence : 12 to 18 months
  • Work Permit Applications (I-765) : 150 to 210 days
  • H4 Approval : Within 15 to 30 days after biometrics screening

These durations are influenced by factors such as processing center workload, application type, and staffing levels at the USCIS service centers.

How to Check Your Case Status Online

An effective way to stay updated on your application’s progress is by regularly checking your case status online. Utilizing your 13-digit receipt number, the USCIS case status page provides updated information on the last actions taken on your case and outlines any required next steps. This resource can be invaluable for applicants seeking clarity on their application status post-biometrics.

Properly communicating your reasons for not being able to attend as scheduled is crucial for a smooth rescheduling process.

What to Bring to Your Biometrics Appointment

The success of your biometrics appointment is partly dependent on arriving adequately prepared. Essential items to bring include:

  • The appointment notice from USCIS
  • A valid photo ID (passport, driver’s license, green card, etc.)
  • Any additional documents requested by USCIS

Ensuring you have these items will aid in a hassle-free appointment.

After Your Biometrics: What’s Next?

Following successful completion of your biometrics, you might be wondering about the next steps. For most, the following sequence ensues:

  • Completed Background Checks : Awaiting the conclusion of background and security investigations.
  • Further Documentation or Interviews : Some applicants may be requested to provide additional evidence or attend an interview.
  • Receipt of Documentation : Whether it’s a work authorization card, green card, or another immigration benefit, the final receipt will take additional processing time after biometrics.

In Case of Delays

Delays in receiving a response post-biometrics are not uncommon. If it has been an extended period since your appointment and you haven’t received any communication from USCIS, consider reaching out to their Contact Center, or schedule an InfoPass appointment to inquire in person at a local USCIS office.

While the biometrics part of the visa application or immigration process can induce anxiety due to its response times, understanding the typical timelines and procedures can make the wait more bearable. Remember, checking your case status online and staying prepared for each step of the process can significantly contribute to a smoother experience. Immigration processes are marathons, not sprints, and patience, along with informed preparation, is key to navigating this journey successfully.

This Article In A Nutshell:

Hello all, I am planning to apply for tourist visa 600 for my mother, which one is the best option to apply in the current situation- Sponsored Family stream (requires Sponsorship form 1149) OR Tourist stream (tourism/visit family or friends). Thanks in Advance.

Tourist stream is generally preferred for the reason that it comes with lesser conditions (without 8531 generally) and includes less documentation.

Hi Friends, The invitation letter that we need to visitor 600 visa, whom do we need to address it to ? Is the intended traveler ? Also if anyone can share the format, it will be great help.

Hi Friends, I am thinking about applying 600 class visitor visa for my parents. They have their both Covid vaccines already. My father is around 66 yrs and my mother is around 61 yrs old, They visited us in 2018 and stayed for 5 months, that visa has expired already. 1) What are the documents we need to produce during this covid time? 2) Do I need the exemption letter for submitting the application? Thanks

Application process is the same as before and yes, you need to apply for an exemption. See this page (assuming you are a PR / Citizen) --> Immediate family of Australian citizens or permanent residents or New Zealand citizens usually resident in Australia | COVID-19 and the border

Hi All, happy to share that , we got visitor visa for my partner on 30th Dec 2021 Below are the details: Application Lodged: 10th Dec Medicals: 16th Dec Grant: 30th Dec ( Got exemption too on same day) Wish you all a happy and prosperous new year🙂

Congrats buddy! For the travel exemption, what proofs did you submit?

I am in the process to apply for visitor visa, my dad's passport is in-progress. Can i start this exemption and visa process before that as i await for passport arrival.

Passport Number will be the key reference which you will qoute in all the applications. Not sure if you can file for visa or exemption without it

Congratulations @rvarmae ! Did you apply for sponsored stream or the normal one (within 600)? I want to bring my parents-in-law from India but unfortunately I can't sponsor in-laws. I was just wondering whether they would consider the application if it is without the sponsorship. I could still apply for travel exemption as they would consider parent-in-laws as parents. Any help is much appreciated. Tagging @NB ; your posts were helpful elsewhere. Any insights on this one?

I applied for a SC600 Visitor visa.

Hi everyone, For those who had their friends/relatives/loved ones visitor visas granted, how long did it take? Was it two weeks? Really keen on seeing my partner again after 2 years. He applied last week.

Hi, I am about to finalise the visitor visa application for my parents. I have recently moved to a new property. In my payslip, it is still reflecting the old address because I forgot to update that. I will attach the first page of the signed contract for the new property as address proof. In my bank statement and nbn invoice, I have the latest address. is it sufficient for address proof? Do I also need to provide form 956A for both my parents as I will be submitting the application on their behalf? Do we need passport size photos as well for them? Thanks

Visitor visa 600 processing time

  • Add to quote

I have lodged application online for visitor visa 600 for my parents living in India on 20/10/21 and thet are doing medicals on 3/11. I was just wondering how long it takes to get grant of visa. I have already checked immigration processing times and it states 7 to 12 months. I was just wondering if someone has applied application recently and got granted or anyone with any knowledge regarding this. I want my parents to join me next months. We are living in Melbourne. Thanks

Hi Kamlesh. I spoke with a migration agent because i'm in the same situation and he told that the travel exemption could take up to 48hs and after that they process the visa and for his experience could take up to another 48hs. It make sense because you're applying for an exemption and it's suposse that you are in a hurry to bring your faimily to Australia. If i get any response i'll let you know about it. Good luck and kind regards

Thanks for your reply. We have applied for exemption and parents did medicals so finger crossed. Anything that I come to know will update you as well. It's bit comforting to know that it doesn't take long. Thank you so much.

75% of Visitor visa (subclass 600) Sponsored family stream applications took up to 7 months in September 2021. 75% of Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream applications took up to 8 months in September 2021. This covers worldwide applications. The travel exemptions can be much faster.

Do we have to apply for exemption before a visitor visa is finalised ? It's been more than 6 months, I applied Visitor visa for my parents.

You have to apply for exemption and put application TRN number.

Thanks heaps, Kamlesh !

hib do you have any news related to the exemption and visa? In my case waiting since one week ago

Hi mate I applied for an exemption 10 days ago and granted today. Visa application will only be finalised once the applicant is exempted. Although, I am not sure of we have to attach the exemption reference number along with our visa application to make Immigration aware ?can anybody in this group, pour some lights into this matter, please?

DV75 said: I am not sure of we have to attach the exemption reference number along with our visa application to make Immigration aware ? Click to expand...

I never read about that but i read some cases when they get the visa immediately after get the travel exemption and another cases that took up to 3 days. You have to put the trn in the travel exemption so home affairs can be notice and track your visa to approve it asap. I did the exemption and visa with an immigration agent. It’s for my partner. The idea is to bring her here and apply for a partner visa. Any idea how long are taking the visitor visa 600?

The current tourist visa processing time is 8-16 months; however, visa applications for immediate family members are being finalised much faster. I applied for my partner's visitor visa 7 months ago, but didn't realise that I had to get Travel exemption approved first before they could grant visa

I applied for exemption for my parents on 7/11 received exemption on 18/11 but haven't got the visa yet. uploaded the exception grant in the visa file. n luck yet.

Did you add the trn of the visa to the travel exemption when you sent it? And you must to apply the visa first and the the travel exemption at the same time

Hi all, Last night I applied for a family sponsored tourist visa for my mum. She's previously visited on a tourist visa. I submitted the application and then took the Visa Reference Number and applied for an exemption. I'm a permanent resident (citizenship application being processed). Will let you know how long the exemption takes and the visa approval. I'm hoping the exemption will only take a week and then 2-3 weeks for the visa as I've already booked her flights for 23 Dec - fingers crossed she can make it here for Christmas! Should add her biometrics appointment is tomorrow.

Hope you get luck with that. Im my case i'm waiting the visa for my partner. I read many different cases so i think the time of procces may vary depends of the situation. I will let you know if i get any response. Regards!

  • 75% of applications: under 10 months.
  • 10% of applications: over 15 months.

It appears this is the standard timeline and doesn't apply to those applying for an exemption as they are being prioritised. So in my case since my mum is immediate family of a permanent resident, her exemption should be approved and then the visa shortly after - hopefully!

That 75% of applications: under 10 months will include all those that only take a matter of days, (1 day is correctly classed as being under 10 months) It shows how these processing times can appear misleading.

Hi, am new here and just adding a post for tracking and awareness. I applied for a tourist visa for my parents, who are in India, on Tuesday - 30Nov. Submitted the request for exemption on Wed - 1Dec. Awaiting response. Received medical examination letter automatically, however there isn't any available date within next 28 days. Parents have booked one that is on 29th day. Will see how it works and will update the post accordingly.

Did anyone get a visa who applied in NOV 2021?

australian tourist visa processing time after biometrics

My parents received their visa (subclass 600) yesterday. Here's the timeline - Visa applied - 4th Nov 2021 Exemption applied - 4th Nov Exemption granted - 14th Nov Medicals done - 29th Nov Biometrics done - 1st Dec Visa granted - 6th Dec

What is the nationality of the applicant?

Hi... I am so hoping someone may be able to assist or guide... My fiancé (Chinese) and I (Australian) currently have a 300 visa in application (15 months waiting so far). In November she applied, via her Beijing agent, for a new 600 Visa in anticipation/preparation of our borders opening, we hope soon. Last 600 visa granted in December 2019 but just missed entry before our border closure... (was booked for flight in March 2020) My question.... has anyone achieved an exemption for separated fiancé's? Is it possible? We are even contemplating meeting in Hawaii (she has US tourist visa) and marrying there... We would need to change our visa to a 309 however I am concerned this may effect and possibly add further delay to her entry to Australia. I am hoping there would be a time processing priority on the 309, for time waiting re our initial 300 visa... Can anyone provide any knowledge or experience on the above concerns please? Just looking for any possibility to help 2 desperate people...

Hello everyone. Myself and my husband are PR holders residing outside Australia. We have applied for visitor visa 600 (tourist) for our 3 year old daughter in February 2021, and have applied for travel exemption on Dec 21 2021. We received the exemption on Dec 23, 2021 however the visa has yet not been issued as of Jan 17 2022. Can anyone pls help and assist us in providing guidance on whom we can maybe contact. Usually from the forum it appears that the visa is granted within a week or 10 days from exemption. Best regards

Same here, we applied for the Visa and exemption for my boyfriend, received the exemption on Dec 20, 2021. Still waiting for the visa as of January 20, 2022, worried we won’t get it in time, please share if you get it soon. Best regards

Hi, I am a visa 820 partner TR holder, still waiting on PR (been nearly 3 months since I submitted 801 at eligibility date). My Mum has had her visitor visa (600, tourist stream) granted within 24 hours of application, we applied for her exemption at the same time (based on her being my fiance's prospective mother in law), but have yet to receive any confirmation/update on that. For context, myself and Mum are both from the UK, and my fiance is an Australian Citizen by birth, and we also have a baby together. I have only seen visas being granted after exemptions approved - this seems a little unusual? Any feedback welcomed.

After you apply

On this page, your fingerprints and photo (biometrics), processing your visitor visa application, check your application status, if we approve your application, if we refuse your application.

Book your biometrics collection appointment as soon as you can to avoid processing delays.

Find out how to give biometrics

We’ll check your application to make sure you have all the documents you need.

If it's incomplete, your application may be refused.

We may also ask you to

  • go to an interview with our officials in your country
  • send more information
  • get a  medical exam
  • get a  police certificate

We’ll tell you what to do if you need to do any of these.

We process most applications in a few weeks or less.  Processing times  depend on the visa office and if you need to do any extra steps (listed above).

Use the application status tracker (opens in a new tab)    to get updates about your application. To create an account you need your:

  • unique client identifier (UCI)
  • application number

If you applied online

You’ll get 2 letters in your IRCC account:

  • a letter with instructions to submit your passport
  • our decision letter

This approval doesn’t mean you can travel to Canada. You need to wait until we put the visa in the passport you submit to us.

If you applied on paper

When your application is approved, any original documents, including your passport with the visa inside, will be returned to you.

You’ll get our decision in your IRCC account. This will explain why we refused your application.

An explanation of why your application was refused will be sent to you, along with any original documents, including your passport.

Basic entry requirements

To visit Canada, you will need to meet some basic requirements, such as:

  • have a valid travel document, such as a passport,
  • be in good health,
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions,
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country,
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit, and
  • have enough money for your stay. (The amount of money you will need can vary. It depends on things such as how long you will stay, and whether you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.)

Inadmissibility

Some people are inadmissible—they are not allowed to come to Canada. Several things can make you inadmissible, including involvement in criminal activity, in human rights violations or in organized crime.

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons. Find out more about inadmissibility .

How long you can stay

Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

At the port of entry, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months. If so, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport. They might also give you a document, called a visitor record, which will show the date you need to leave by.

If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one. If you arrive at an airport that uses primary inspection kiosks , ask the border officer after you finish at the kiosk.

myindia said: You cannot guarantee. Sometimes they change the status Sometimes they won't. My parents Application which was approved 2 days ago, eligibility status went into review when they got PPR. Visa processing times: applications outside the UK

Check how quickly you’ll receive a decision on your UK visa application if you are applying from outside the UK.

You are not required to book any travel before you apply or before a decision is made on your application.

You should allow enough time before you plan travel to make a visa application. You will only receive a refund of your application fee if we have not started to process your application.

You may be able to pay for a faster decision on a visa application.

When your application processing time starts

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) starts processing your application once you either:

verify your identity and submit your documents and application online using the UK Immigration: ID Check app . We’ll tell you if you can use this

attend your appointment at a visa application centre (VAC) to provide your fingerprints and a photograph (biometric information)

Applications made in the USA

If you make an appointment at a USCIS Application Support Center to provide your fingerprints and a photograph (biometric information) , you must then send your passport and documents to the VFS processing hub in New York.

If you make an appointment at a VFS premium Application Centre to provide your fingerprints and a photograph (biometric information), you can submit your passport and supporting documents at that location.

In both cases, the processing time starts when VFS receive your application.

When your application processing time ends

You’ll get a letter or email to let you know that a decision has been made on your application .

If you attended a visa application centre, you should not visit one until you have been contacted to do so.

You do not need to contact UKVI to track your application if you’ve already made a visa application and it is still within the current processing times.

When you might wait longer

Your visa application may take longer to process if, for example:

  • the information in your application is not accurate or requires further consideration
  • you need to provide further evidence, for example evidence of funds
  • your supporting documents need to be verified
  • you need to attend an interview
  • further information is required on your personal circumstances (for example if you have a criminal conviction)
  • UKVI is experiencing increased visa demand

You will be contacted by a letter or email if we need more information on your visa application.

Current processing times

The processing times listed below are based on the current volume of visa applications.

All UK processing times are measured against agreed customer service standards .

Visit visas

Study visas, family visas, ukraine visas, popular work visas, temporary work visas, work visas you can apply for without a job offer, work visas to start a business, work visas for an overseas employer, other visas and permits.
