MTA Unveils New All-In-One Mobile App for Trip Planning and Service Information

App includes schedules and service alerts for subways, buses, lirr and metro-north  , public can sign up for app; currently in beta testing.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that its new MTA app is available for download. The app is currently in BETA testing and will eventually succeed the MYmta app. The app features schedules, service alerts and more for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad all in one place. Users can also book Access-A-Ride trips and see elevator and escalator outages at stations throughout the subway system.

“If we want more customers to use public transit, providing travel tools that are easy and intuitive is key,” said MTA Acting Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara . “The new MTA app accomplishes just that, connecting riders to the information they need in one or two taps.”

Additional features in the Beta version of the new MTA app include:

Plan a trip to see recommended routes and check schedules for subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North, PATH and AirTrain.

Get service alerts and see planned and unplanned service changes and best ways to get around.

Save favorite routes and stops for quick viewing of arrival times.

Live bus tracking to see where a bus is located that is approaching a stop, check when it will arrive, and follow it throughout its trip, including instant information on how many stops and minutes away a bus is.

Real-time on-board crowding for railroads.

Book Access-A-Ride trips, find pick up and drop off times for trips, and view trip history.

Improved search making it easier to see which search results are MTA stations and the services offered there at a glance.

Dynamic strip maps and station views indicate the service that is running at any given time.

The app was co-developed with Axon Vibe, a smart mobility platform provider and former winner of the MTA’s Transit Tech Lab accelerator. Utilizing this smart transit technology MTA app users will also be able to opt into sharing their location data to receive smart, real-time, location-based notifications for their individual journey.

The aggregated data will be available to the MTA to better understand ridership and mobility patterns around the New York metropolitan area. This information will assist with improving transit operations to meet the needs of customers and developing innovative tools to help make it easier for riders to plan for transit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This effort was supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

“Axon Vibe is thrilled to continue supporting the MTA with our smart transit technology, aimed at promoting sustainable travel and increasing public transit ridership,” said Roman Oberli, CEO of Axon Vibe .

The app will replace MYmta when it becomes available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store later this year. Riders will not need to download a new app as it will automatically update on a mobile device if MYmta is already installed.

Members of the public can sign up for access to the app here .

New York City’s Live Subway Map

The MTA Live Subway Map is a real-time digital map designed to help riders navigate New York City’s ever-evolving transportation network.

Using the latest data, the map continually reroutes itself to show subway service right now, tonight, and this weekend. It also shares live train movement and times, entrance and exit locations, and tunnels for easy transfers.

The MTA Live Subway Map is the first major map redesign in 40 years, updating the iconic New York City subway maps by Unimark International and Michael Hertz Associates. Our map joins the geometric clarity of Massimo Vignelli’s diagram with the geographical and organic curves by Tauranac and Hertz.

The Live Subway Map is a web-based application that works across a range of devices. It’s a pro bono collaboration between the MTA , the Transit Innovation Partnership , and design and technology company Work & Co.

This is our beta release, and we need your help to keep making it better for every rider. Please submit your feedback .

Looks nice, but old app was much easier and more reliable/accurate

The layout of this new app is far busier and requires more taps to get the same information as the old app/web platform. For a tourist not in a hurry, that information can be useful, but for a native NYer who needs to get someplace now, fumbling through an app to find the same information can mean missing a train, bus, or transfer. However, the worst part is that estimated arrival times are more often than not, completely wrong. Trains and buses in the app that don’t exist, arrival times being 3-5 minutes off, and travel times between stops completely incorrect (too long or too short). Cross checking with the train arrival signs in stations or at bus stops and checking the web app show me that this app is the issue and somehow is working off different algorithms or data sets to estimate timing. The web app has become quite good and overwhelmingly is the most reliable for arrival times. I’ve resorted to using the web app, because while not perfect, it’s by comparison 5 stars over this. I look forward to some fast updates to fix, at the very least, the missing and incorrect arrival times.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your comments. Your feedback is important to us as we continue to improve the product in future releases.

If it ain’t broke…

Why would you completely change the app? I used to be able to open the app, click on the subway line I needed, scroll down and see when the train was coming. Now there are so many added steps. I have to keep switching to my favorites tab instead of my favorite lines just being there when I open the app, click past a service change alert page and change the direction I need to see EVERYtime. Then I have to push the stop times up to fill the screen because for some reason they added a huge unnecessary map on the subway page. Also the train times are gone. It used to say the scheduled time a train was coming as well as how many minutes away it was. Now it just says how many minutes. We have limited time when trying to catch a train. I just need to open it, make 1 or 2 clicks and see when the train is coming. I used to be able to do that. This new app takes too much to navigate. The whole user interface is just unnecessarily clunky and not user friendly. Simple is always better. I never used the bus part of the app for this same reason and always chose to use the web browser. Now you’ve ruined the subway part. The only positive is that it now supports dark mode. I wish I’d never updated. Please change it back.
Thank you for your feedback. We just updated the app so that you can now set your preferred default tab. Go to More > Tab Settings to set which tab displays when you come back to the app later. The app now also remembers where you were within the Explore and Status tabs. We appreciate your patience as we continue to make updates to the app.

Inaccurate and difficult to navigate

I agree with asnow1190. I know that developing an app takes a lot of work, but the old app was much easier to navigate, clearly laid out, and the arrival times were much more accurate- I’ve missed trains because of this new app. It is extremely difficult to find what should be standard information: for example, searches don’t always yield results (this could be due to needing the station written in a specific way instead of common names) and separate transit systems are visually lumped together at hub stations. While the new app looks nice aesthetically, it’s visually crowded and it’s difficult to parse out any detail. This feedback is not about getting used to a new app. As much as I use it, I should be a pro at it by now- the fact that I’m not speaks to the lack of user-friendliness. Perhaps the app developers can take a look at the old app and integrate what worked into this app.

MTA Launches Online Trip Planner for Customers Planning New Grand Central Madison Commutes

MTA Logo

Draft Schedules Released in Early June Feature Increases in Peak AM & PM Service

More options for reverse commuters, view mta’s grand central madison trip planner.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today introduced an online trip planner at gcmtrips.mta.info to allow Long Island Rail Road customers to plan trips to and from Grand Central Madison, Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal or any other stations once Grand Central Madison opens later this year. To use the trip planner, a customer can input station of origin, destination, time of travel, day of week and the planner will suggest itineraries and transfer opportunities.

The creation of the interactive tool complements draft timetables for every LIRR branch that were released in early June showing proposed systemwide service following the opening of the LIRR’s terminal at Grand Central Madison this year. The LIRR will hold a series of virtual public information sessions starting next week to gather public input on the timetables.

“The online trip planner will help LIRR customers see the many new travel opportunities that the opening of Grand Central Madison will bring to the Long Island Rail Road,” said Catherine Rinaldi, Interim President of MTA Long Island Rail Road and President of MTA Metro-North Railroad . "Once the public has an opportunity to plan their new commute, they will see how many new travelling opportunities the new, refreshed schedules provide to our beautiful new Grand Central Madison Terminal, revitalized Penn Station and our Brooklyn hub at Atlantic Avenue.”

“It’s important to show, not only Long Islanders, but everyone in the region that the opening of Grand Central Madison creates numerous opportunities to travel by commuter rail,” said MTA Chief Customer Officer Sarah Meyer. “We strongly encourage customers to use the trip planner to create their new commute and give us feedback at the public information sessions that start next week.”

Systemwide Service Increases Mean More Trains During AM Rush, PM Rush, Reverse Peak, Off-Peak

The timetables propose to increase the overall number of LIRR trains by 40 percent. The number of morning rush hour trains would increase slightly more than 40 percent and the number of afternoon/evening rush hour trains would increase by nearly 65 percent. Thanks to the new terminal and the LIRR Main Line Expansion Project (Third Track), reverse peak service would dramatically improve to Ronkonkoma, Huntington and all intermediate stops, as well as from Brooklyn, where service to Jamaica is increasing.

The timetables will improve the spacing of trains on many branches, reducing large gaps in service. During the off-peak hours of middays, evenings, and weekends, Huntington and Ronkonkoma will both have service to Manhattan every 30 minutes, with weekend Ronkonkoma Branch service doubling with the completion of the Double Track Project, that introduced 13 miles of a brand-new second track between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma, and the Main Line Expansion Project.

On the West Hempstead Branch, trains will run every hour during off-peak periods, twice as frequently as they do today, and the need to change trains at Valley Stream is eliminated. Stations in Queens will see service increases throughout the day, in both peak and off-peak periods.

"Change at Jamaica" Evolves

To reduce delays that can occur currently at Jamaica Station while trains wait for a connecting train, and to allow the LIRR to move significantly more trains through the station, trains will no longer have scheduled connections at Jamaica.

Manhattan-bound customers at rush hour on most branches, and all day on the busiest branches, will find plenty of options to take them to the terminal of their choosing without the need to change trains. For those who do need to transfer, all trains will now make station stops at Jamaica to reduce wait times. Once the schedules are finalized in the fall, the TrainTime app will be updated to provide transfer recommendations.

Service to Brooklyn to Increase by 28%

In Brooklyn, trains will run approximately every 12 minutes in both directions during peak hours and every 20 minutes during off-peak hours for an overall 28% increase in daily trains. Every train will make stops at Nostrand Avenue and East New York. Most Brooklyn trains will originate and terminate at Jamaica using the new Platform F, but the LIRR will retain some through service with peak and off-peak trains on the West Hempstead Branch and peak trains on the Babylon and Hempstead Branches. Most customers on the Far Rockaway and Hempstead Branches, whose trains currently primarily serve Brooklyn, will now have direct service to Manhattan all day.

LIRR to Hold Information Sessions on New Timetables

The LIRR will hold four virtual customer information sessions about the proposed new timetables at the following dates and times:

Thursday, June 23 -- 6 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, June 30 -- 6 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, July 7 -- 6 to 7 p.m.

Following these information sessions, a virtual public meeting — where the public will have the chance to offer comments on the timetables — will be held on  Wednesday, July 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

More information about the information sessions, the virtual public hearing, and how to register to participate are posted at  https://new.mta.info/grandcentralmadison
