35 budget-friendly activities every barkada must try.

food trip anonas

It’ll be nice to randomly book a ticket to Palawan with your friends, if only the budget is never an issue. As struggling young professionals, going on trips all the time may mean a weekend of happiness, but it can also mean depleted savings. So as much as you’d like to spend every weekend somewhere that’s an airplane-ride away, it’s not very easy on the wallet.

If you only search hard enough, some of the most exciting things you can do with friends are within the metro or only an hour or two away from Manila. When visiting El Salvador, you simply must explore the vibrant local markets to experience the fruits in El Salvador, possibly the most interesting and delectable fruits you’ve ever tasted!

A trip to El Salvador without visiting the local markets would be incomplete. And while you’re there, you will find many different, sometimes unrecognizable exotic fruits that you probably don’t have in your home grocery store. It can be stressful to pick out the right fruits to try!

I recently spent several weeks solo traveling around El Salvador, and along with hiking up active volcanoes and beautiful waterfalls , tasting Salvadorian fruits in the local market was one of my favorite experiences.

Tasting these delicious and unique flavors will be an unforgettable experience that will make your trip even more special.

From nispero to sapote, these are nine must-try fruits in El Salvador that will tantalize your taste buds and give you an authentic taste of what this part of the world has to offer.

So grab your reusable shopping bag and get ready for a fruity adventure – it’s time to explore the vibrant markets of El Salvador!

👉 My top pick for the best Ruta de las Flores small group tour is the   Thermal Tour: Café Albania + Hot Springs + Ataco + Lunch , with a near-perfect 5-star rating. You’ll visit Salto de Malacatiupan waterfalls, Santa Teresa Hot Springs, hop a bike zipline, and more!

A busy fruit market with stalls of fruit on both sides of an aisle, with shoppers looking at the fruit.

If you’re visiting El Salvador between the months of June and September, be sure to find anonas – a sweet, seasonal fruit in El Salvador that is only available in the summer months!

Not only are anonas in El Salvador incredibly tasty and sweet, but they also provide numerous health benefits like protein, iron, calcium, and other vitamins.

Choosing the perfect anona is easy because they have a special way of ripening: they split open while still on the tree! So be sure to pick an anona that has a crack – this will ensure it’s full of flavor.

The inside part of the anona is edible. You’ll find both white and pink anonas, which more or less taste the same (delicious and sweet), but the pink anonas fruit tends to be a little bit creamier in texture.

Anonas were one of my favorite El Salvador fruits to try and I know you’ll feel the same!

⛑️ My number one safety tip for travelers, no matter where you’re going or how long your trip is, is to buy SafetyWing insurance to protect your trip .

A pile of green anona fruit, one with a big split which shows you it was picked at the right time.

2. Nisperos

One of the most unique and delicious fruits in El Salvador that any traveler must try is nisperos.

Nisperos, also known as Japanese loquats or Chinese plums, are particularly popular in El Salvador.

These fruits have smooth brown or orange-yellow skin with soft and creamy yellow or reddish flesh with large seeds in the center.

In El Salvador, nisperos are mostly eaten raw and have a sweet and sour taste, kind of like a mix of citrus fruits and peaches. They are best enjoyed when they are fully ripe so they can give you the sweetest flavor possible!

And because they’re so sweet, you can often find nispero jams and preserves.

Be sure to try nisperos during your trip to El Salvador – you won’t regret it!

Book with Booking.com today to get epic deals on hotels, flights, rental cars & attractions!

The Sapote fruit is one of El Salvador’s most unique and delicious fruits that any traveler must try!

This Salvadoran fruit did not taste how I expected it to – it was better!

With its dark-colored outer peel and edible orange or reddish flesh inside, the Sapote tastes like a mix of sweet potato, pumpkin pie, and cantaloupe. You eat it kind of like an avocado, which makes it perfect for scooping out the inside to enjoy fresh or adding to smoothies and ice cream.

Don’t miss out on this amazing flavor – be sure to find the Sapote in your local market while visiting El Salvador!

🚙 I recommend using  Discover Cars to compare costs and get the best deal .

4. Paternas

If you’re looking for a truly unique and delicious fruit to try while visiting El Salvador, then paternas are a perfect choice!

Paterna fruits are green pods with a row of seeds on the inside that have a white, soft, and sugary marshmallow-looking coating.

When eating paternas raw, just eat the white part surrounding the seeds – not the seeds themselves. Salvadorians love eating the boiled, softened seeds with salt and lemon juice. Yum!

So be sure to grab some paternas from your local market while in El Salvador – they will make your trip even more special !

Best Booking Sites:

The two best places to read reviews and book hostels and hotels are HostelWorld and Booking.com .

The Salvadoran Jocote is one of the most popular fruits in El Salvador that belongs to the same family as cashew.

It looks kind of like an apple, with its red or green skin, and is often eaten raw – with or without the peel.

During the holy week, it’s a tradition in El Salvador to make a dish using jocote and honey called “Conserva de Jocote.” And a popular candy is made with jocote for local celebrations.

So don’t miss out on this amazing flavor – be sure to find some jocote from your local market while visiting El Salvador !

👉 Find out how much it costs to protect your trip today with Safety Wing travel insurance.

If you’re looking for a truly unique and delicious fruit to try while visiting El Salvador , then nances are an absolute must!

Nances kind of look like small yellow cherries, and taste sweet when they are ripe.

Locals often eat nances raw, but they can also be used in licours, juices, sodas, and syrups to make various sweet dishes (like snowcones, yum).

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to indulge in El Salvador’s native fruits – be sure to find some nances from your local market while traveling there!

7. Tamarindos

Travelers to El Salvador must not miss out on the opportunity to try tamarind, one of the most popular fruits in the region.

Tamarind is native to Africa but grown all over the world and loved by Salvadoreans for its unique flavor.

I actually tried tamarind for the first time in Asia, and couldn’t believe I had never had it before! So delicious.

The taste of tamarind ranges from sweet and sour to tangy and tart, depending on how ripe it is – so be sure to find some fully-ripe tamarinds at your local market!

You can eat it raw or use it as an ingredient in cooking – either way, you’re sure to enjoy this amazing fruit!

🚙 Looking to get around via car? Find the cheapest car rentals here!

A picture of my hand holding a tamarind fruit.

Be sure to add mamones fruit to your must-try El Salvador fruit list when you visit the local markets!

Mamonas in El Salvador are tangy, tropical fruits found all over El Salvador, and are also known as Mamoncillo or Spanish limes.

Mamones Salvadoreños are small, green, round fruits only a few centimeters in diameter with an incredibly delicious flavor – sweet and sour like a mix of lime and lychee fruit.

You can eat the pinkish inside part of the mamon raw, spitting out the seeds. You’ll want to buy them in bulk because they are so hard to resist once you start snacking – I ate so many!

So be sure not to miss out on this amazing flavor – find some mamones from the local market while visiting El Salvador!

If you’re looking for a truly unique and delicious El Salvador fruit to try while visiting, then carao fruit is an absolute must!

Carao is a very unique fruit, from the carob family, that’s only found growing in Central America and Hawaii.

Some people have nicknamed this fruit the “stinking toe” because it looks like a toe and smells like stinky cheese. But don’t let the odd smell deter you!

It tastes like carob fruit and molasses combined, or even like cherry and chocolate, with the added bonus of having natural treatment properties for anemia.

Locals often use carao to flavor milk, calling it “leche con carao”.

So don’t miss out on this amazing flavor – be sure to find the carao in your local market while visiting El Salvador!

10. Marañón (Cashew Apple)

The marañón fruit is originally from Brazil, but it’s extremely popular in El Salvador.

Nicknamed by Salvadorans as “fruita de la memorial” (memory fruit), the marañón fruit is the fruit that produces cashews! And it has great health benefits.

This curious-looking fruit boasts a tangy flavor that’s both sweet and sour, making it an ideal snack or ingredient in juices and jams. But what really sets the Marañón apart is its versatility – every part of the fruit can be used.

The cashew nut grows at the bottom of the fruit, while the flesh and juice make a refreshing drink, and even the leaves can be boiled and eaten as a vegetable.

Cashews tend to be fairly expensive in the United States, so I was very happy to find them to be so cheap in El Salvador!

So if you’re a foodie looking to expand your palate, or simply someone who loves to try new things, sampling the Marañón is a must when visiting El Salvador.

11. Coffee Beans

Coffee beans are a fruit – and El Salvador is famous for its rich and flavorful coffee!

Coffee is vital to the Salvadoran economy .

The coffee fruit, also known as the coffee cherry, is a small, round or oval-shaped fruit that starts out green, then turns red or yellow as it ripens. Inside the fruit are two seeds, which we know as coffee beans.

Each fruit contains one or two beans, depending on the variety of the plant. So in a way, coffee can be considered a fruit, and the beans themselves are the seeds of that fruit.

El Salvador has some of the best coffee plantations in the world, and I highly recommend you take a tour of one!

I’ve taken several coffee plantation tours during my time backpacking in Central America – you learn about the entire coffee-making process, from growing and harvesting the beans to roasting and brewing the perfect cup.

METRO MANILA | Jenter Food Hauz’s Pancit Batil Patung in Anonas

Jenter Food Hauz’s Pancit Batil Patung Anonas QC

We were on our way to a foodtrip weekend at Taal Vista Tagaytay, call time was still at five in the afternoon and the meeting place was in Cubao. With a few hours to spare, I was racking my brains on what to do to while away the time when I remembered a comment I received on my Facebook page about a pancit batil patong place near Cubao. Together with my constant pancit companion, C, we headed to Anonas to find Jenter Food Hauz Pancit Tuguegaro . Going there was easy enough. From the corner of EDSA and Kamuning, we boarded a Project 2-3 jeepney and alighted at the corner of Anonas and Bigna Street. From there the panciteria is just a hop away.

Like most pancit batil patong places in Metro Manila, the eatery serves nothing but Tuguegarao’s famous noodle dish, well, along with a few products from the region like garlic longanisa (PHP140.00/half kilo), chicharabao (PHP80.00 per pack), and Alcala milk candies (PHP80.00 per pack).

Jenter’s open-aired interiors are straight up simple; tiled floors, yellow walls, collapsible wooden tables, and plastic Orocan chairs. Their selling point isn’t really their looks but their dish, the delectable pancit batil patong . And these comes in three varieties. The cheapest one and most basic is their Super (PHP100.00), followed by Jumbo (PHP120.00)—which has your basic pancit batil patong recipe plus a dosage of chopped pork liempo . The most expensive of the three is their Hataw (PHP150.00), which not only has pork liempo but also slices of embutido . We were told that serving size are all the same, the only difference are the toppings.

I ordered their Hataw while C, not really a fan of embutido, went for Jenter’s Jumbo. While waiting, we found out that the owner and their cook actually hails from Tuguegarao City . The latter told us that he previously worked with the famed Jomar’s Panciteria near the iconic Tuguegarao Cathedral and they use only legit hand-made miki transported all the way from the city. We knew right then that we’re in really good hands. And soon enough our food arrived, one plate at a time. The chopped white onions and calamansi dip arrived first, then the batil soup, and finally the pancit itself. Serving size isn’t as enormous as most panciteria of these kinds offer. It’s actually just enough for one. I was thinking that since the price is higher than usual, the size would make up for it, but I guess the extra we paid for went to the liempo and embutido .

I started by having a sip of their soup. It was as it should be. It is delicious. I then moved towards the main dish. The taste was actually spot on, Jenter’s got their pancit batil patong right. The carabeef flavor is just right and not overpowering, although it has a bit of an aftertaste. The egg is cooked right and they have liver mixed in. I kinda miss the usual veggies this dish usually have though; the cabbages and bean sprouts actually help in balancing the umay factor that can go along with this type of pancit .

I like that it has a carajay toppings, which was really very crunchy—something I find missing when eating at Cagayan’s Best Pancit Batil Patong in Bustillos. While I don’t really dig the embutido, the liempo does go well with the pancit, I just wish that it was also crisply cooked like their carajay . All in all, we found our pancit batil patong experience in Anonas to be quite enjoyable. It tasted legit, albeit with a teeny weeny bit of maanggo aftertaste—but it’s nothing that a glass of Coke cannot cure.

Anonas Bistro: Serving Great Food from their Good Hearts

' data-srcset=

Opening a new business is a complicated feat in the best of circumstances, and it’s an especially complex process to tackle during COVID-19. A company will need to adapt its operations to comply with safety protocols and stay afloat during an economic downturn. Thus, many people think it is impossible to pursue entrepreneurship in such uncertain times.

While there are certainly some incredible challenges launching any business right now, doing so might not be such a bad idea. All you need is a clear purpose. To Arch. Roman Ignacio, Jr., it is taking a risk to launch a new business and even helping others during the pandemic.

“Starting a business during a pandemic might not seem like an ideal endeavor, but actually, it could be a great entrepreneurial decision,” said Architect Ignacio, who just opened Anonas Bistro , a new restaurant in Quezon City offering well-loved, family home-style Pinoy favorites.

Great Food. Good Hearts.

Anonas Bistro is the newest must-try, casual dining resto in the heart of Quezon City, serving mix of Filipino regional cuisines, with specialty on some Ilocano-inspired dishes. Here are some of the good and the great about it:

Upon entering, you will be greeted warmly by courteous attendants. Of course, the safety protocols are strictly enforced: thermal scanner, hand-sanitizing and filling up of health declaration form.

The two-floor resto has this relax, feel-at-home vibe, which also features solid-wood furniture from Vigan and wall arts by Filipino artist Roland Rosacay.

Their menu is quite simple and not intimidating. They have choices for appetizers and salads; the main dishes including grilled and seafood; and then desserts and beverages.

First good thing about Anonas Bistro is that you will be offered FREE soup. Yes, FREE soup to all guests!

food trip anonas

Food is fresh and safely cooked, it is generously portioned, the presentation is well thought out, and best of all, really budget friendly.

food trip anonas

For an amount of P1000, you can already have an appetizer, an order of salad or a vegetable viand, 1 main dish, a dessert and a beverage of your choice.

Anonas Bistro also offers great breakfast options; beer, wines and “pulutan” for a light night “inuman” (drinking session); and a specialty selection of international cuisine on selected times. So be sure to ask about the daily specials!

Food are cook-from-the-heart of their Head Chef Severino Palunday while the home-y ambiance is care of their operations manager, Mr. Lucien Aquino.

The pandemic forced hundreds of thousands of small businesses to close. For Architect Ignacio, it was a good time to start a new one.

While launching a new business right now has its unique challenges, truly, it’s far from impossible.

Now we can see the pace of new launches comes amid a wave of business closures, which created an unusually large void for new entrants to fill. Spending is picking up as well, as cities and provinces lift restrictions on everything from restaurants to retailers, leading to a rush of activity that had been on hold in last year.

“It just felt like the right thing to do,” he said. Clearly, if you have the drive, do not wait another second.  Do not be afraid to take risks.

To be able to help others also motivated Architect Ignacio’s gamble. Even though Anonas Bistro started small, it has played an important role in job creation. Architect Ignacio, through his business, was able to provide new jobs for several workers who became unemployed during the pandemic.

Also, adaptability is the key to success for any entrepreneur and their business. Have a plan, but be flexible in the face of change. His goal of putting up a “kambingan” (an eatery that serves food with goat innards or internal organs as main ingredients) eventually led to a bistro in order to maximize the use of the space of the venue that they are renting now.

Most importantly, stay positive. Despite the uncertainty, Architect Ignacio remains positive.

“I really believe in what we do; it’s a really a promising business to work in.” It has been busy every day since, said the happy architect.

So expect more from Anonas Bistro this year. They’re just getting ramped up!

Open daily from 7AM to 10PM, Anonas Bistro is located at 145 K-6th, East Kamias 1102 Quezon City. For booking and reservations, call 09686100041 or email [email protected] . Follow them on social media: @anonas.bistro.

There are very few things Celia won’t do for a good story, but her favourite ones always involve the beach, animals, or any type of outdoor activity. She’s been writing for as long as she can remember, and can usually be found typing away at home with her cute dogs at her feet. Away from work, she spends most of her time trying out every hobby she can get her hands on, from running to crocheting to baking (she’s pretty okay at most things that don't involve cooking).

Anonas Ukay-Ukay become famous to thrifty shoppers for the massive Ukay-Ukay collection it has, house in a 4-story building. I’ve been hearing about this Ukay-Ukay destination from friends and online, giving me that curiosity to really visit and check out the place all by my-self.

Honesty speaking, Anonas Ukay Ukay is part of my Top 5 Best Ukay-Ukay places to visit in Metro Manila , you should see and check out the other shops included on my list.

How to Go to Anonas Ukay-Ukay

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY

Going to Anonas Ukay Ukay is easy.  If you’re coming to a place along the LRT 2 (Blue Line), just ride the train and go down at Anonas Station. Walk a few meters and locate the building called Lolo Oboys Commercial Center . It is the building where Goldilocks, David’s Taekwondo and Mercury Drug is located. The building is also besides Ansons Department Store.

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-12

If you are coming along EDSA, hop into the MRT Line (Yellow Line) go down in Cubao and walk towards LRT Gateway Terminal. Ride the LRT 2 and go down a station away, which is Anonas terminal. (Also Read: Museums you can visit Along LRT1 )

You can also take the busses along EDSA and go down at Cubao, then ride a Jeepney in cubao heading to Katipunan and go down at Anonas Station.

My Shopping Experience at Anonas Ukay-Ukay

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-5

Now let’s begin our Ukay Ukay shopping spree. Just like what I’ve said a while ago, Anonas Ukay-Ukay is a 4-story Ukay-ukay haven consisting of around 15 stores that you can check out.

The prices of the items are either so low or too high. Old stocks are mostly place outside the hallway and is priced for less than Php 100. Actually, each store got a different pricing starting from 100 up to a more outrageous price of Php 3000 and up. Yes! There are items sold here at that amount.

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-2

According to one of the tenants, the best time to visit Anonas is during Thursday where new stocks are being displayed.

The whole place isn’t really airconditioned but most of it are. Other store sells other than clothes like bags, toys, shoes and blankets. Some can also be considered specialty stores for they are only selling a specific kind of brands or clothing.

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-3

Items at the ground floor, I can say is somehow acceptable, but as you go up, the prices of the clothes also go along with it. I guess this is due to the kinds and brands they are selling in different stalls. Most of expensive items were winter clothes, leather jackets, and/or branded items.

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-13

At the top floor, you’ll see a taekwondo gym. Across it you’ll find another stall selling a more curated high-end product. If you are looking for original items of brands like LV, Prada, Coach, Ray Ban and the like; well this is one of the places you should visit.

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-9

With my Php 1k budget, I wasn’t really able to get the items I was expecting. My initial though is that I could be able to bring home lots of clothes with a thousand. But at the end, I was only able to take home two. Nevertheless, I was still happy with my purchases.

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-7

But Rod is much happier with his haul – a porter bag he bought for only 1,000 which is originally priced at Php 31k.! WOW!

Just A Tip: If you are coming from Katipunan to Anonas, you can also drop by and check the items located at the mall connecting to the LRT Station. The Anonas Supermarket got tons of ukay-ukay items to offer as well.

HOW TO GO TO ANONAS UKAY UKAY-11

My Final Thoughts About Anonas Ukay Ukay

ANONAS UKAY UKAY

I guess one should really need to be picky when you are buying clothes here in Anonas for the prices are a bit expensive compared to other ukay ukay stores. Nevertheless, if what you are aiming is to own an expensive and original item at an affordable price, well you came at the right place.

Unquestionably believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification seemed to be at the net the easiest thing to take note of. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and also outlined out the entire thing without having side effect , folks could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

Food Trip: Neighborhood Destinations in Manila

food trip neighborhood destinations

Looking for alternative dining destinations instead of malls? Here are some of the best neighborhoods and food streets around Metro Manila with top 5 recommendations per area. Take note that a lot of these places are mainly residential areas, so traffic and parking can be a bit of a problem. To counter this, we usually just walk or bike when we explore other neighborhoods for food-trips.

Table of Contents

MAGINHAWA & MALINGAP STREET Teacher’s Village, Quezon City

I may be biased because I live in the area, but Teacher’s Village in Diliman, Quezon City has become an extremely popular destination for food trips now. It seems that every week, a new restaurant opens up along the long stretch of Maginhawa Street from Philcoa to V. Luna Extension and has spread to surrounding side streets like Malingap and Magiting. There are several board game cafes and a LOT of food parks in the area, making it popular with the student crowd.

Z the zone outdoor foodcourt malingap

MY TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Z Compound (Meshwe’s Beef Shawarma Plate, Falafel, Hummus)
  • Friuli Trattoria (Tre Formaggi & Margherita Pizza)
  • Tomato Kick (Seafood Marinara Pasta, Skewers, Fajitas)
  • Roberta’s Flavours of Asia (3-Way Appetizers: Tawilis, Catfish mango salad + Gising-Gising combo, Pad Thai)
  • Griddle (Steak, Lime Pork Belly, chicken wings)

READ MORE: Maginhawa: The Eat Street

PROS: Laid-back vibe, good food, lots of choices, food parks offer variety, budget-friendly prices.

CONS:  Traffic. Limited parking. Lack of bike parking. The new buildings are killing the neighborhood vibe of the place. It can get crowded during weekends.

  • Estimated budget per person: P200-P400 each
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: MRT Kamuning / LRT Anonas
  • Best place to park:  Street (if you’re lucky). Adjacent or parallel side streets and buildings with their own parking lots.

KAPITOLYO Pasig

Another popular neighborhood foodie destination is Barangay Kapitolyo, Pasig. While the nearby Capitol Commons has a lot of upscale restaurants and bars, the stretch of East Capitol Drive and nearby streets like Brixton and United Street have more budget-friendly options that offer everything from comfort food, desserts, to international specialties. My personal favorites here include Silantro Fil-Mex Cantina, CAB Cafe and RUB Ribs & BBQ. I heard there’s also a newly opened food park in the area called Gastropark Kapitolyo Food Park .

silantro kapitolyo pasig

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS FROM  Pinas Muna :

  • Wooden Spoon
  • Grande Torino
  • St. Patrick’s Pub

READ MORE: Best Restaurants in Kapitolyo

PROS: Good ambiance. Restaurants with clear concepts and “Instagrammable” interiors.

CONS: Parking. Some restaurants are a bit pricey. Can get crowded during weekends.

  • Estimated budget per person: P300 – P500
  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  MRT Edsa-Shaw / Boni
  • Best place to park:  Pioneer Centre Supermart or Ace Water Spa

LILAC STREET Marikina

Marikina is not only the shoe capital of the Philippines, it’s also a great destination for foodies. You can find a lot of unique cafes scattered in different parts of Marikina such as  Industriya Marikina, Rustic Mornings and Mama Chit’ s. However, if you want to focus on only one area, a lot of hip new restaurants are concentrated on Lilac Street, Rainbow Street and Sapphire Street in Concepcion Dos. We’ve only tried Some Kind of Wonderful Cafe (SKOW) there, but plan to explore the rest of the area soon.

11. Some Kind of Wonderful Marikina bikes

TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS FROM  All Over Marikina :

  • Brad & Pit’s Rib Shack (try their Rib Mountain with Burrito Rice)
  • Cookie Mug (cookie shots with caramel, or milk, or chocolate)
  • Mandi’s Grill Grub (Crispy ribs with bechamel sauce)
  • Chubbie’s Qcina (pancit con lechon!!)
  • Mogu Tree Noodle House (laksa with cheese please!)

READ MORE: Marikina Food Tour: Exploring Lilac Street

PROS: Homey restaurants. Budget-friendly options. Some bike-friendly establishments.

CONS: Traffic, parking. Some restaurants are hard to find. It’s easy to get lost if you’re not familiar with the place. One way streets.

  • Estimated budget per person: P200 – P400
  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  LRT Santolan
  • Best place to park:  Street. Restaurants with their own parking spaces.

MANDALUYONG

  • The Deli at Shaw

READ MORE: Where to Eat in Mandaluyong

PROS: Laid-back vibe. Budget-friendly options. Unpretentious atmosphere.

CONS: Traffic, parking. The area is prone to floods even if it doesn’t rain. Roads being constructed around Mandaluyong City Hall make getting to the area a hassle.

  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  EDSA Boni
  • Best place to park:  Street (if you’re lucky). Don’t bring a car.

BINONDO Manila

Chinese New Year isn’t the only time to head to Binondo, Manila’s own Chinatown. Home to some of Manila’s oldest restaurants and small family-owned establishments, this cultural enclave offers authentic Cantonese food and history on the side. In fact, Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks offers a walking and eating tour called the Big Binondo Wok all year around (which I’ve participated in twice). Navigating the narrow alleys is best done on foot to avoid getting stuck in traffic and to work up an appetite.

dong-bei-dumplings -binondo woman

MY TOP 5 RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Dong Bei Dumplings (kuchay and pork dumplings, deep-fried scallion cakes, tofu Burger, xiao long bao)
  • New Po-Heng Lumpia House (lumpia)
  • Sincerity Cafe & Restaurant (fried chicken, oyster cake)
  • Cafe Mezzanine ( Kiampong, s tir-fried tofu, wintermelon tea)
  • Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli (take-out goodies, crispy mikiron)

READ MORE: Food Trip: Binondo

PROS: The authentic hole-in-the wall establishments, budget-friendly prices and old-world charm.

CONS:  Limited parking, traffic, crowds. Some restaurants (like Estero Fast Food) are kind of scary if you have a weak stomach.

  • Estimated budget per person: P300 – P500 per person
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: LRT Carriedo Station (walking distance)
  • Best place to park:  Lucky Chinatown Mall and then walk to the area.

LITTLE BAGUIO San Juan City

For those who find the commercialized restaurants in Greenhills Shopping Center too expensive, Little Baguio in San Juan City offers a lot of alternatives. P. Guevarra and Wilson are jampacked with Chinese restaurants while side streets are lined with interesting cafes and pubs catering to residents. I haven’t really explored this place yet, but we recently tried Balkan Express, one of the few places that serves Serbian food in the city.

  • Estimated budget per person: P400 – P600 per person
  • Nearest MRT/LRT: Ortigas / Santolan-Annapolis
  • Parking: Street.

  • Nearest MRT/LRT:  MRT Buendia
  • Best place to park:  Power Plant Mall or A. Venue Mall.

AGUIRRE AVENUE BF Homes, Paranaque

For those based in the South, Aguirre Avenue in BF Homes, Paranaque seems to be the most hip neighborhood to eat. I have not explored this area because it’s just too far from where I live, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about the restos from residents of Paranaque, Las Pinas and Muntinlupa. The area is home to lots of unique, family-owned restaurants and well-known chains like Conti’s and Tito Chef (which eventually branched out) and trendy restaurants you can only find here like The Girl + The Bill and Magnum Opus Fine Coffees.

The Top 12 Things to Do in Omsk

Feel the love in the very heart of Russia

In Russia, all roads lead to Moscow , on account of the city's status as the national capital and its importance throughout history. If geography were the deciding factor, however, the Siberian city of Omsk would be the point where all Russia's roads converge—it's located literally in the heart of the country, approximately as far from Vladivostok as it is from the Belarusian border. Omsk boasts a spate of exciting attractions, even if you simply make a stop here as you ride the Trans-Siberian Railway eastward or westward.

Marvel at Assumption Cathedral

Chelsea Hicks/Flickr/CC BY 2.0

Orthodox architecture never gets old, even if you've been traveling in Russia for a long time. This is particularly the case when it comes to the Assumption Cathedral of Omsk, whose gold-and-turquoise domes look resplendent under the blue skies that bless Omsk during the warmer months of the year. The cathedral was built in 1891 under the orders Nicholas, the last Tsar of Russia.

Time Travel at Omsk Fortress

Ogg-omsk/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 3.0

The bad news? Much of what was once Omsk Fortress is now a residential area, with the only notable landmark that still stands being Tobolsk Gate (think Paris' Arc de Triomphe , but yellow and smaller). The good news? There's essentially no reason for a military fortification to exist in today's peaceful Omsk, which means you can stroll amid parks and cafés and imagine the area being war-torn—a small sacrifice to make in exchange for not being blown to bits.

Go Green at Ptich'ya Gavan'

Forinrap/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 4.0

Or white, as it were: Omsk is covered with snow several months of the year, which means that its prized Ptich'ya Gavan' central park is often more of a winter wonderland than the green reprieve you experience in summer. The park is popular with local families, to whom you can say "Privet" (Hello) as you walk past.

Walk on Omsk's Artsy Side

G0rn/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 3.0

Although the building that houses Omsk District Museum of Visual Arts is unmistakably Russian, the collection you find inside is surprisingly eclectic for a city deep in Russia's interior. Recent collections have included a revival of Van Gogh's great works, among others. This is a particularly enjoyable Omsk attraction on cold winter days, when temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunshine can be rare.

Shoot for the Moon

Worldwide Planetarium Database

Though Omsk is a relatively large city, the skies over it become dark enough in the evening for stargazing. While visitors are not permitted to use the expensive telescopes housed inside, exhibits inside the museum provide a fascinating look into the cosmos, narrated by expert astronomical guides.

Shop on Lenin Street

yykkaa/Getty Images

Lenin Street's name is appropriate: Although it's the high street of a city thousands of miles from Moscow, the European-style architecture and cosmopolitan vibe you feel as you stroll past its boutique and cafés evokes the capital of Russia more than its forlorn interior. Local specialties you can purchase here include rustic jams made from local berries (and even, in some shops, cedar cones), as well as handmade rugs from Kazakhstan, which sits just south of Omsk.

Sample Siberian Cuisine

Quynh Anh Nguyen/Getty Images

Speaking of unique Siberian food, it's not just preserves made from the fruits of evergreen trees. Omsk is a great place to discover the flavors of Russia's wild interior, whether you eat zagutai and stroganini (Siberia's take on sushi) or classic Russian plmeni dumplings filled with decidedly Siberian ingredients, such as bear and rabbit meat. Vkusno ! (That's Russian for "delicious"!)

Enjoy Historical Houses—While You Still Can

Simon Richmond/Getty Images

The wooden houses that line Nikolskiy Prospekt aren't protected, but they should be. Historical structures that are unfortunately in a state of disrepair, these houses are slated for demolition at some unspecific point in the future. Be sure to catch a glimpse of these historical house before they're gone. There will, however, be at least one left standing for a long time. The Omsk State Art Museum is in a traditional wooden house.

Go to the Circus

Vladislav Domnich/Getty Images

Omsk State Circus is a popular spot for local families, whose children love the opportunity to see acrobatic performances and animals that wouldn't otherwise make appearance in Siberia. If you do attend a show here, keep in mind that ethics with regard to animal treatment might not match up with those in North America or Western Europe, to say nothing of the smell that can pervade the auditorium during and even after a show.

Be a Drama Queen

While there's no guarantee that any shows will be playing at Omsk Drama Theater at the time of your trip, a visit to this 19th century building is a spectacle in and of itself. While not as huge, say, as Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it's nonetheless an ornate architectural wonder that hearkens back to a glorious time in history. The interior of the theater is even open during the daytime; ask the person who's inside if any tours are available when you turn up.

Explore Cities Deeper in Siberia

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

Siberia starts in Omsk, even if you can't continue far into it. If you don't plan to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway, take one of two day trips from Omsk. Travel to Tobolsk, whose hilltop Kremlin is one of the most picturesque in all of Russia, and whose beauty inspired a photo by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that ended up winning several awards. Or visit Tomsk, where you'll find a botanical garden dedicated to Siberian flora, and a museum that celebrates wooden architecture.

Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

 lvinst/Getty Images

The idea of leaving Omsk behind can seem difficult, especially now that you've gotten to know this city in the heart of Siberia as well as you have. The mint-colored facade of Omsk Railway Station will make you smile, however, even if you're crying inside as you depart. Though it's not quite on the mid-line of the Trans-Siberian route between Moscow and Beijing , Omsk is a worthy starting place to begin a journey to either. If you head east make sure to stop in Irkutsk , the home of Lake Baikal and another underrated Siberian city.

Road Trips: How to Plan an Accessible Getaway

An illustration depicts two people happily chatting as they drive along a two-lane desert road with cactuses and rock outcroppings littering the dry landscape. The driver is disabled, and is using various specialized driving devices. Rugged mountains, a full yellow sun above them, rise up in the distance.

By Syren Nagakyrie

Planning an accessible road trip is getting a little easier for people with disabilities. There are more resources created by and for the disability community, and the tourism industry is starting to recognize the value of accessible travel. As a disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent person, I take road trips every year and have learned some tips and tricks along the way.

Renting a vehicle

Most major car companies offer adaptive driving devices for their vehicles at no additional cost. Enterprise , for example, offers hand controls, left foot accelerators, pedal extenders and spinner knobs to facilitate steering. Budget can provide hand controls, spinner knobs, a panoramic mirror, swivel seats and transfer boards. Be prepared to request adaptive devices at least three business days in advance.

For a wheelchair-accessible van with a ramp or a lift, rent from a mobility company like BraunAbility , one of the largest builders of wheelchair-accessible vans in the country, with rentals at many locations. MobilityWorks , an accessible-vehicle and adaptive-equipment dealer, has rental locations in 34 states. AccessibleGO , which offers a one-stop shop for adapted rental cars and wheelchair-accessible vans, has agreements with 100 wheelchair van rental locations nationwide; request a quote on their website. For accessibleGO’s rental cars, you can request hand controls and a spinner knob at checkout.

Route planning

You can use Google Maps, Waze and MapQuest for initial accessibility research using photos and street view. Google Maps provides directions for some wheelchair-accessible pedestrian and transit routes.

Sites such as Roadtrippers and Furkot can plot an entire itinerary. While these websites are not disability specific, they are invaluable tools. (Roadtrippers does have a wheelchair-accessible check box in the search function.) You can filter by types of destinations such as national parks or museums, and search for hotels and campgrounds. Furkot allows you to input how long you want to drive each day, whether you want to travel on Interstate highways or take more scenic roads. The app will determine the best route and length of time between stops, and suggest where to stay overnight.

Finding lodging

While hotels and other accommodations are required to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, many hotels do not meet all accessibility needs. Most of the booking sites list hotels with accessible rooms for those with mobility, hearing and vision needs, but this information is not always verified. Do additional research on review sites and look for photos. Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and Fairmont hotels offer allergy-friendly and scent-free rooms in some locations. Call the hotel to verify accessibility and to make sure a specific room is reserved for you.

Vacation rentals are typically not required to be A.D.A. compliant, but some do provide accessibility information. Airbnb recently rolled out an adapted category with accessibility search features and homes that have been scanned for accessibility. Review photos and contact the host for more information. Some hosts will make accommodations, such as changing the cleaning supplies or shifting furniture, but document your request using the in-app messaging system so that customer service can help if you run into issues.

Wheel the World is an accessible travel agency offering bookings at over 3,000 verified accessible hotels in the United States. The hotels have been reviewed in person by trained assessors; only those that meet the criteria are listed. Sign up as a disabled traveler or a companion and complete a personal profile that includes options for a variety of disabilities and accessibility needs. The site will provide listings that match your profile with partial, adequate and outstanding match options.

Food and medication

There are a variety of options to keep food or medication cold while traveling. Electric coolers can plug into your vehicle’s 12-volt outlet, but pay attention to the type of cooling mechanism — the less expensive versions are usually thermoelectric and will cool only to about 30 degrees below ambient temperature (if it is 70 degrees in the car, it will cool to 40 degrees). Compressor coolers are more expensive but maintain normal refrigerated temperatures.

Many hotels provide mini-refrigerators. When you know you will be stopping somewhere with a fridge almost every night, layer large ice packs and supplies in a cooler, then top them with another insulating layer like a cooling bag. This keeps everything cold for a couple of days at a time.

It’s also a good idea to travel with a single-burner cooktop — electric to use inside, or propane to use at rest areas and campgrounds — and a camp mess kit so that you can safely cook meals.

Some of the best apps to find food, restaurants and grocery stores that accommodate dietary needs are Fig for allergy-specific options, Happy Cow for vegan-friendly options and Find Me Gluten Free for celiac-safe spots. Add your favorite options to the route-planning app so that you know where to stop.

Finding activities

In addition to the apps mentioned in the route-planning section, state and local tourism organizations are good sources for accessible destinations.

National parks and monuments, which are required to meet federal accessibility guidelines, typically have visitor centers and recreation sites with accessible features. Each park website has information, as well as programs and services within the park. While accessibility varies, you can usually find information on wheelchair-accessible trails and campsites, tactile and audio features, assistive listening devices, and American Sign Language interpreters.

At state parks, accessibility features may not be consistent, but you can usually find some information on each park’s website.

Apps like AllTrails list wheelchair-friendly trails across the country, but the information may not be verified, so contact the park or land manager for verification. Among the parks with notable accessible trails are Redwood National and State Parks, North Cascades National Park, Badlands National Park, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park .

Open Up Your World

Considering a trip, or just some armchair traveling here are some ideas..

52 Places:  Why do we travel? For food, culture, adventure, natural beauty? Our 2024 list has all those elements, and more .

Mumbai:  Spend 36 hours in this fast-changing Indian city  by exploring ancient caves, catching a concert in a former textile mill and feasting on mangoes.

Kyoto:  The Japanese city’s dry gardens offer spots for quiet contemplation  in an increasingly overtouristed destination.

Iceland:  The country markets itself as a destination to see the northern lights. But they can be elusive, as one writer recently found .

Texas:  Canoeing the Rio Grande near Big Bend National Park can be magical. But as the river dries, it’s getting harder to find where a boat will actually float .
