35 budget-friendly activities every barkada must try.
It’ll be nice to randomly book a ticket to Palawan with your friends, if only the budget is never an issue. As struggling young professionals, going on trips all the time may mean a weekend of happiness, but it can also mean depleted savings. Besides, as long as you’re with good friends it doesn’t matter where you go because it’s almost a given that you’ll have a pretty grand time.

JellyBeans' Guide to the Things to Do and Places to Be in and around the Metro
Home-grown and heritage dishes at Anonas Bistro
Now more than ever, we harried denizens of the metro look for comfort whenever we can, right?
Well, what’s more comforting than feeling the warm welcome of home?
That’s what it felt like to enter this newly opened restaurant in Anonas, Quezon City.
Sure, the hustle and bustle of the city may stay just outside its doors, but inside its premises is a haven for your spirit.
“We want this experience to be like going home to your lola’s house in the province,” shares co-founder Lucien Aquino. “You’re with your family, your lola is cooking your favorite food in the kitchen, and you feel right at home.”
The place certainly calls to mind the familiar comforts of our beloved ancestral homes in the province that we enjoy spending time in again and again.
Its outdoor seating area is surrounded by lush greenery. Sheltered by a large mango tree from much of the sun, it affords diners a comfortable al fresco setting for their meal. In the evenings, lighted lamps adorn the mango tree giving diners whimsical lighting for their dinner.
The two-storey residential house was renovated by builder/contractor Lucien and his co-founder Roman Ignacio, updating the structures and finishings to current standards and for use as a restaurant. Its dining areas are furnished with heavy wooden tables and chairs, shipped all the way from Ilocos. The walls, on the other hand, are decorated with artworks by local artist Ronan Rosacay as well as other homey bric-a-bracs.
Completing the transformation of this space into a homey Filipino restaurant is Chef Severino Palunday. He brings with him a considerable thirty years’ worth of culinary experience as a sous chef in a European cruise liner.
From his kitchen, Chef Sev whips up traditional and home-style Pinoy dishes, that make use of fresh local produce, just like the ones your lola makes, but infused with the techniques and methods of an internationally trained chef.
His menu includes:
Soup of the Day . Usually a cream-based soup that the chef whips up from choice ingredients. It is served with every meal.
Creamy Tofu (Php135) . A savory appetizer made by combining crispy fried tofu, aromatics with cream.
Dinakdakan (Php315) . An Ilocano dish in which pig parts such as ears, liver and face are boiled until tender, then grilled and sliced thinly. Flavorings and chilis are then added to complete the dish.
Fried Lumpiang Ubod (Php195) . A Filipino appetizer (or ulam in my case) which julienned ubod (or heart of palm) are sauteed with chopped meat and vegetables, encased in lumpia wrapper and then deep-fried and served with a spiced vinegar dip.
Gising-gising with Shrimp (Php275) . Otherwise known as ginataang sigarilyas , this Kapampangan dish is made with chopped winged beans in coconut milk spiced with siling labuyo , garlic, onions and shrimp paste. Chef Sev serves it with plump shrimp.
Pork Belly Roll (Php380) . Pork belly is seasoned and stuffed with aromatics and flavorings, then oven-roasted until the skin becomes golden brown and crispy and the meat is tender. Chef Sev serves it with mashed camote and a buttery gravy.
Kare-Kare Ox Tail (Php480) . A viand made with stewed ox tail, tripe and other offal in a sauce made from roasted peanuts, onions and garlic, colored with annato seeds and then thickened with ground rice.
Turon Ala Mode (Php160) . A dessert made with fresh ripe banana slices encased in lumpia wrapper and then deep-fried until golden and crispy. It is then topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Mango Shake (Php120) .
Avocado Shake (Php120) .
Ampalaya Apple (Php120) .
Whoever said that Filipino food lacks color and character obviously has never encountered Chef Sev’s takes on Pinoy food classics.
So if you’re looking for a place where you can come home to good food and a good homey vibe in Quezon City, Anonas Bistro is your best bet.
Anonas Bistro is located at 145 K-6th, East Kamias 1102 Quezon City, open daily from 10am to 10pm. For inquiries and reservations, call +63 995 1200969 or email [email protected] .

I love Anonas Bistro because it is a homey Filipino restaurant, their ambience reminds me of my grandma’s house which is surrounded by plants, it’s nostalgic. Their food are classic yet appetizing with twist. I love to try their pork belly roll, gising gising with shrimp and turon ala mode. I’m curious how does ampalaya apple taste. This place is recommended especially if you wanna take a break, relax and have some great foods.

ANONAS BISTRO . The Extraordinary Taste and Place.
When eating or dining into a new restaurant what is this one thing that we are looking for? Is it the place, the price or the taste? Well, of course as for me it should be all of the above. But first, we need to find and look after the Taste of the food that they serve. Exactly as it is. We need to satisy the cravings of our tongue. And that’s how your taste life becomes happy whenever we got that right in front of our tongue.
So right there and then, me and some of our media friends, happened to visit a new resto in the heart of the metro. Located along the streets of Anonas, there is this one, true, amazing food that I really liked so far. It is called ANONAS BISTRO located in heart of 145 K-6th Kamias Quezon City. It is owned by Architect Roman Ignacio Jr., who invested into resto during this pandemic.
He decided to put up this business, to help those people who lost their jobs in these times of crisis. Until somebody asked him why? And he simply said this challenging and yet inspiring answer” Eh bakit ka nagtatayo ngayong pandemic? Eh gusto ko eh! Iba ang pakiramdam ko. Hindi naman habang panahon ganito tayo. Kung mag flop man yun kasalanan ko.” That gave me the feeling of bravery and tough. Imagine, putting up a business in this time, that is one hell of an action.
Architect Roman also shared that he is into construction business that’s why he the ones in-charge to the place or venue, from renovations etc. While his partner, Chef Severino Palunday, is the ones in-charge to kitchen and Lucien Aquino. The idea of this Bistro is to serve Filipino dishes but more on Ilonggo side of cooking, like for instance, Kare-Kare with a twist, something like that. And every month, they create a special dish, or signature dish that will give them the Bistro branding. How nice and idealistic.
Finally, the verdict. As for me, the place is good. It’s cozy, homey and very relaxing. And the food of course, the taste is definitely extraordinary. Indeed. Because it has an authentic flavor as in “kakaiba” that you will not find it with any other resto. I will truly recommend it and I am giving them 5 Stars! And as for the food, for me it’s 10/10. Great!
So, what are you waiting for, you can come and visit their place and try their sumptuous and authentic food. You can also check out their social media pages for more information, you may follow @Anonas.Bistro on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, or visit the official Anonas Bistro website at http://anonasbistro.com/. They are open from 7am to 10pm daily.
HAPPY EATING!

Food Trip: Where to eat in Angono and Binangonan, Rizal (updated 2023)
The towns of Angono and Binangonan in Rizal offer an alternative destination where you can admire art and enjoy food trips near Manila. Angono, known as the “Art Capital of the Philippines,” is home to quirky folk art museums, art galleries like the Blanco Family Museum , and homegrown restaurants that serve native and exotic cuisine.
The neighboring town of Binangonan is also considered a cradle of arts in Rizal. It’s here where you can find the famed Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs (the oldest known work of art in the country) and ArtSector Gallery and Chimney Cafe , an art and food spot that’s grabbed the interest of folk from Metro Manila.
I think that these two lakeside towns are still a bit underrated compared to popular foodie destinations like Antipolo and Tagaytay, but they have lots of hidden gems to offer. Visiting these towns can be combined with road trips to Antipolo if you’re looking for somewhere new to go.
In this list, I’m highlighting few spots where you can enjoy food and local art/culture at the same time. Most of these are ideal for families taking cars, motorcycle riders, and cyclists up for a workout.
Binangonan was once a thriving fish port and relied on the fishing industry, having a long coast line facing the Laguna de Bay including the western part of Talim Island. Recently, it’s become a destination among art enthusiasts with organized tours visiting ArtSector Gallery along with Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo aside from the famed Petroglyphs.
Table of Contents
Cafe Giya is one of the newest additions to the cafes in Eastridge, having opened in late 2022. This al fresco cafe offers a romantic pit stop to enjoy coffee and refreshments with a view.
The resto serves an assortment of appetizers, sandwiches, pasta, rice bowls, cold drinks, and coffee. Like most restaurants in the area, you’re paying for the view and ambiance, so expect dishes to be a bit pricey. We tried the Gyudon Rice Bowl and Kimchi Rice Bowl, which cost about P300-P400 each.
The cafe is pet-friendly. Pet cats and dogs are allowed in the al fresco areas (except for the 2nd floor) as long as they are leashed and wearing diapers. It’s also bike-friendly, with bike racks in a small grassy field in front of the main dining area, so you can easily keep an eye on your bikes while you dine.
Cafe Giya is located right beside the main Angono Gate (next to Perlita). The cafe is open for al fresco dining from Tues to Thur: 10am to 9pm, Fri: 10am-10pm and Sat-Sun: 8am-10pm.

Coffee Rush
Coffee Rush is a cafe franchise that adds Filipino pride to the Coffee Culture experience by providing that good rush with their espressos, fresh brews.
The full service coffee shop, restaurant, and liquor bar is one of the most popular cafes in Rizal right now because of the stunning view it provides.
Since it was established in 2019, this cafe inside the private Eastridge Executive Village has become a popular destination for bikers, motorcycle riders, and families on road trips esp. during the pandemic era because of the al fresco set-up.
If you happen to be visiting Art Sector Gallery and want another place to enjoy the view and have coffee, Coffee Rush is a good spot. The spacious resto serves all-day breakfast meals, pasta dishes, some Japanese-inspired dishes and good coffee.
Address: Coffee Rush, Eastridge Village, Binangonan, Rizal
ArtSector Gallery & Chimney Café 360º
Since it opened, ArtSector Gallery & Chimney Cafe 360 has become one of the most popular art and food spots in Rizal. The gallery and art cafe is located in the town of Binangonan, but it’s an easy drive from Angono and Antipolo for those who are already in the area.
The entire space was designed by Antonio “Tony” Leaños, a multi-awarded visual artist and the same architect behind Pinto Art Museum . In terms of size, ArtSector is smaller than Pinto Art Museum and displays fewer artwork pieces.
Chimney Café serves coffee, tea and soft drinks, mainstream beers, cocktails, mocktails, wine and some light snacks including pizza, pasta and appetizers. But more than the food, most people really come here for the view.
This gallery and café perched on a hill is ideal for those who want to enjoy modern artwork and dine with a spectacular 360º view of Laguna Lake, Sierra Madre Mountains, Pililla Windmills, sunset, moon, and city lights.
ArtSector Gallery & Chimney Cafe 360 is located in Lot 18 Block 178 Eastridge Executive Village, Col. Guido Rd, Tayuman, Binangonan, Rizal. Ticket prices: P200 each – regular rate, P225 each- holidays
Hiraya Restaurant / Trabi Cafe
Hiraya Restaurant and Trabi Cafe are two lovely spots within the same al fresco compound located within a vine-covered garden in the town of Tayuman in Binangonan, very near the Angono town proper. Trabi Cafe, near the entrance, specializes in coffee and tea, pastries and light snacks.
Hiraya Restaurant’s menu lists mostly Filipino specialties like all-day breakfast and silog meals, Sinigang, Tokwa’t Baboy, and more. The restaurant also serves pizza, pasta, ramen, and steak and other dishes.
Trabi Cafe is one of the few places in Rizal where I’ve found craft beer from Angono Brewery being sold. Did you know that the lakeside town of Angono in Rizal has its own homegrown beer? Angono Craft Brewery, established in 2019, brews Higantes IPA, which features artwork of the iconic papier-mâche caricatures that are usually paraded in the streets during the Higantes Festival.
The beer has a tropical and fruity flavor and aroma that will remind you of chill countryside scenes. You can also order beers in cans directly from their Facebook or Instagram page . Delivery can be arranged to Metro Manila.
Col. Guido Juicy IPA is named after one of the streets in Angono, Rizal where the brewers grew up.
This dining destination is a rustic and airy spot for drinks and light snacks, with the cafe’s glass walls, wooden tables and native nipa huts. At night, the garden gets lit up with fairy lights, resulting in a charming, magical dinner experience.
Hiraya Restaurant and Cafe is located at 0905 Tambayan Road, Sitio Hangganan, Pag-asa, Binangonan, Rizal. Nearby landmarks include Angono Private High School and Bloomingdale Subdivision.
Perlie’s Garden Restaurant
On the way to ArtSector and Thunderbird, you’ll also pass by Perlie’s Garden Restaurant in Eastridge. This resto serves home-cooked Filipino meals like buttered fried chicken, pancit, tuna sisig and sinigang and the like.
Perlie’s Garden Restaurant is a possible stop if you’re heading up to the Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs or staying in Thunderbird Resort Rizal.

If you’re into folk art and food, lots of restaurants in the main town proper of Angono offer an interesting pit stops for those based in the metro. It’s easy enough to get here by public or private transportation.
We usually pass Angono going to and from Art’s hometown in Binangonan, so we’ve managed to sample some of the restaurants and visit some art galleries over the years.
Angono is best known for celebrating the Higantes Festival, a fiesta held in honor of San Clemente, which is celebrated with a procession of higantes or gian paper mache effigies, which have become a symbol of the local culture. You can see Higantes and festival masks and heads decorating a lot of the local restaurants.
For those who want to get a taste of Angono’s distinctive folk art with native cuisine, here are my top picks of where to eat there.
Blanco Family Museum & BRKD Cafe
The Blanco Family Museum houses the vast collection of artwork produced by the Blanco family of painters. Headed by renowned painter Jose “Pitok” V. Blanco, the entire family has produced an array of visual art depicting Angono’s idyllic rural life, colorful fiestas and religious celebrations.
You can see the work of Blanco, his wife and their 7 children, and their talent and amazing growth over the years. Paintings are displayed by the age the kids made them, and what they could do when they were only 4 or 5 years old will astound you.
Pitok’s famous masterpiece “Angono Town Fiesta” is a large oil mural painting that shows the jovial celebration of the San Clemente Festival. All of the faces depicted on the painting are actual residents of Angono.
A new addition within the museum is BRKD Cafe, a hidden urban garden cafe where diners can enjoy local coffee, tea, and snacks with a view of lush mini jungle area and koi ponds.

Balaw-Balaw Specialty Restaurant and Art Gallery
One of the most famous restaurants in Angono is Balaw-Balaw, which dishes out a healthy serving of folk food and folk art. It gets its name from the condiment made from fermented rice, shrimps, and bamboo shoots, which is a staple in every household in Angono. The sauce goes great with grilled dishes and fish. Another Angono specialty is Minaluto , a localized version of Spanish paella.
The resto serves a few exotic dishes on the menu including Soup No. 5 (butt and balls of cow), sinabawang balut (duck eggs cooked like bulalo), nilasing na palaka (frogs either marinated in wine or cooked as adobo) and kamaro (crispy deep-fried crickets) which makes the place popular with adventurous foodies.
One exotic dish we’ve sampled here was uok (larva of a beetle, found in fallen coconut trees, whitish in color, cooked as adobo or steamed in tamarind fruit and tomatoes just like escargot).
Balaw-Balaw has extensive collection of folk art work and furniture which are displayed on three floors of the building.
Balaw Balaw Specialty Restaurant. 16 Doña Justa Subd. Ph. I Manila East Highway Angono, Rizal, Philippines, 1930 Angono, Rizal.
Nemiranda Arthouse and Atelier Museum Cafe
Nemiranda Arthouse and Atelier Museum Cafe is a family art museum owned by renowned Angono artist Nemesio R. Miranda (more popularly known as Nemiranda) who specializes in paintings and sculptures celebrating the rural scenery and figures from folklore.
The Atelier Museum Cafe serves local specialties like fried itik (duck), pesang dalag (stewed mudfish), sinigang na kanduli (a type of catfish), alongside regular Pinoy staples like tapsilog, grilled liempo, chicken barbecue and pork sisig at affordable prices.
You can visit the art gallery and museum for a small entrance fee. Oh yeah, this restaurant has one of the most graphic bathroom signs I’ve ever seen. :p
Atelier Museum Cafe is located at #5 Dona Elena St., Dona Justa Village, Phase 1, Brgy. San Roque, Angono, Rizal.
AngNewNo Arts Design Cafe
AngNewNo Arts Design Cafe gives a more modern spin to folk art and food. The cafe’s name is the shortened version of the term “Ang New Angono” (The New Angono) and the place serves as a gallery for aspiring artists.
The two-story main dining space serves as an art gallery for paintings, woodcrafts and sculptures by talented young artists from the province of Rizal. AngNewNo serves some interesting fusion dishes including pizza topped with tinapa and itik pulutan favorites like red hot itik , sisig, and crispy pata, as well as budget-friendly rice meals.
The colorful Higantes-inspired festival masks in front of the restaurant’s facade and in the outdoor dining/garden area add a nice local touch.
AngNewNo Arts Design Cafe. 6 Manila East Road, Brgy. San Roque, Angono, Rizal.
Art Capital Cafe
Art Capital Cafe is a cozy cafe that serves coffee and non-coffee based frappes and more. They have interesting drinks like Butter Beer, Mocha Mint and Salted Caramel Mocha. The cafe also showcases showcases art pieces from up and coming local artists.

We were on our way to a foodtrip weekend at Taal Vista Tagaytay, call time was still at five in the afternoon and the meeting place was in Cubao. With a few hours to spare, I was racking my brains on what to do to while away the time when I remembered a comment I received on my Facebook page about a pancit batil patong place near Cubao. Together with my constant pancit companion, C, we headed to Anonas to find Jenter Food Hauz Pancit Tuguegaro . Going there was easy enough. From the corner of EDSA and Kamuning, we boarded a Project 2-3 jeepney and alighted at the corner of Anonas and Bigna Street. From there the panciteria is just a hop away.
Like most pancit batil patong places in Metro Manila, the eatery serves nothing but Tuguegarao’s famous noodle dish, well, along with a few products from the region like garlic longanisa (PHP140.00/half kilo), chicharabao (PHP80.00 per pack), and Alcala milk candies (PHP80.00 per pack).
Jenter’s open-aired interiors are straight up simple; tiled floors, yellow walls, collapsible wooden tables, and plastic Orocan chairs. Their selling point isn’t really their looks but their dish, the delectable pancit batil patong . And these comes in three varieties. The cheapest one and most basic is their Super (PHP100.00), followed by Jumbo (PHP120.00)—which has your basic pancit batil patong recipe plus a dosage of chopped pork liempo . The most expensive of the three is their Hataw (PHP150.00), which not only has pork liempo but also slices of embutido . We were told that serving size are all the same, the only difference are the toppings.
I ordered their Hataw while C, not really a fan of embutido, went for Jenter’s Jumbo. While waiting, we found out that the owner and their cook actually hails from Tuguegarao City . The latter told us that he previously worked with the famed Jomar’s Panciteria near the iconic Tuguegarao Cathedral and they use only legit hand-made miki transported all the way from the city. We knew right then that we’re in really good hands. And soon enough our food arrived, one plate at a time. The chopped white onions and calamansi dip arrived first, then the batil soup, and finally the pancit itself. Serving size isn’t as enormous as most panciteria of these kinds offer. It’s actually just enough for one. I was thinking that since the price is higher than usual, the size would make up for it, but I guess the extra we paid for went to the liempo and embutido .
I started by having a sip of their soup. It was as it should be. It is delicious. I then moved towards the main dish. The taste was actually spot on, Jenter’s got their pancit batil patong right. The carabeef flavor is just right and not overpowering, although it has a bit of an aftertaste. The egg is cooked right and they have liver mixed in. I kinda miss the usual veggies this dish usually have though; the cabbages and bean sprouts actually help in balancing the umay factor that can go along with this type of pancit .
I like that it has a carajay toppings, which was really very crunchy—something I find missing when eating at Cagayan’s Best Pancit Batil Patong in Bustillos. While I don’t really dig the embutido, the liempo does go well with the pancit, I just wish that it was also crisply cooked like their carajay . All in all, we found our pancit batil patong experience in Anonas to be quite enjoyable. It tasted legit, albeit with a teeny weeny bit of maanggo aftertaste—but it’s nothing that a glass of Coke cannot cure.
