UWS Lanarkshire campus opens to students after £110m project

  • Monday 3 September 2018 at 2:30pm

uws lanarkshire campus tour

The University of the West of Scotland’s (UWS) new £110 million Lanarkshire campus has opened to students.

The site has been completed in a two-year project and includes cutting-edge research facilities, an environmental chamber and virtual wards for nursing and midwifery courses.

The university said it represents a “step-change in the way learning and teaching is delivered in Scotland”.

Based in Hamilton International Business Park near businesses including HSBC, Babcock and John Lewis, UWS said the campus will promote collaboration with students, graduates and academics.

Professor Craig Mahoney, principal and vice-chancellor of UWS, said: “The opening of the UWS Lanarkshire campus is a momentous occasion in our University’s history, and has been delivered on time and on budget – an extremely proud moment for everyone involved in the highly-ambitious project.

“The new campus will give students and staff access to some of the most advanced teaching and research facilities in the UK.

“It will also have a tremendous impact on the local community, with estimates suggesting the campus will result in a £443 million boost over the next 25 years.”

He added: “The way students learn is changing. With direct access to knowledge at their fingertips in the form of smart devices, students need a campus which is flexible and responsive to learning in all its forms – UWS Lanarkshire is equipped with first-class facilities to support the changing nature of learning and teaching higher education.

“Every element of the campus has been carefully considered to ensure it is modern, connected, collaborative, sustainable and that it provides significant opportunities for research and enterprise activity.

“As we welcome students to the UWS Lanarkshire campus, we hope they will relish the opportunities it presents and be proud of their new university facility. We want all our students to use the new space, shape it, and make it their own.”

The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) urgently needed to renew its Hamilton Campus. An earlier feasibility study had progressed to RIBA stage C but capital funding was not available.

Description

The University’s new estates director then asked the question as to how a modern learning environment differed from a progressive office environment with spaces essentially for ‘information understanding’, rather than ‘information processing’. This led to an existing large, shell & core office development evolving into a hugely flexible learning environment. The new Lanarkshire campus illustrates the way in which office spaces are starting to morph into other types of workspace and vice versa. The original project consisted of three discrete buildings set above two levels of undercroft carparking, located on a business park. These were adapted, extended and fitted out to create a wholly new type of innovative and beautiful learning/working environment with excellent social facilities providing links into adjacent businesses. The result is a facility which has established UWS as the ‘go-to’ University in Lanarkshire/central Scotland. Join us for an exciting opportunity to find out more about this project from the people behind it. Refreshments will be provided, along with the chance to network with fellow BCO members and industry peers after the tour.

UWS EcoCampus

The £110 million new University of the West of Scotland (UWS) campus at Hamilton International Technology Park developed by HFD Property Group (HFD) and designed by Mosaic Architecture + Design has opened its doors to the new student intake. A partnership between UWS, and developers HFD, the new 235,000 sq.ft. Lanarkshire campus offers a range of specialist labs, teaching facilities and social spaces as well as a gym, and student union. The new campus is one of the UK’s ‘greenest’ educational environments, with carbon neutral buildings incorporating sustainability features such as 100% renewable power, generated through a windfarm and rainwater harvesting. The three campus buildings which form the Campus are joined by a ‘Street’ which provides work and social spaces for students, staff and the local community. The buildings have been designed to adapt to modern learning techniques which rely more heavily on smart devices and open plan teaching. The campus also sees the introduction of innovative learning landscapes combining formal learning environments with new interactive and technology-rich learning zones. The campus includes a 236-capacity auditorium and a conference space for up to 128 people. A priority has been placed on sustainability, making UWS Lanarkshire one of the UK’s greenest university campuses, powered by renewable energy from the nearby Blantyre Muir wind farm. Working with the University and Developer we carried out the Cat A Works and in collaboration with haa design the Cat B works.

Lanarkshire

A Lanarkshire campus building

Hello Lanarkshire students!

Here at Your Students' Union we would love to be able to have staff and student presidents based on every campus at UWS. Unfortunately, we're a really small team but we do manage to visit Lanarkshire regularly, where we work in the small glass office so you can always see what we're up to! However, even when we're not there in person, you can access our services online.

Your Students' Union Advice Service is open to all UWS students, offering free, independent, impartial advice to help you when you most need it.

Representation

Make a change and have your voice heard at UWS by becoming a student rep, sharing your policy ideas, or simply letting us know how your university experience is going.

Get involved

Societies and Volunteering

University is about more than just studying, get involved with societies and volunteering while you are at UWS.

Find opportunities

What about parties and events?

We regularly get feedback from Lanarkshire students that you would like to see more social activities and perhaps a bar on campus! We hear you! Unfortunately right now the combination of the space we've been allocated by UWS, the location of the Lanarkshire Campus, and the lack of public transport after hours mean it is not feasible to run events in Lanarkshire at the moment.

Got something to tell us?

Want to tell us something about your experience at Lanarkshire? Use our digital comments box.

The inaugural episode -- hosted by Kara Fornstrom, director of SER’s Center for Energy Regulation and Policy Analysis -- introduces listeners to the permanent podcast host, SER Executive Director Holly Krutka, and is set to air today (May 8).

In the pilot episode, listeners can learn more about Krutka, SER and the goals of launching the podcast.

“The energy industry is fundamentally entrenched in Wyoming while, at the same time, it is dynamic, transformative and ever-expanding,” Fornstrom says. “We wanted a platform for listeners to become more familiar with Wyoming’s intimate history with energy, as well as an opportunity to learn more about emerging technologies and the landscape of Wyoming’s energy future.”

Nestled at the heart of innovation and education at UW, SER is dedicated to energy-driven economic development for the state of Wyoming. SER directs and integrates cutting-edge energy research and academic programs at UW, and bridges academics and industry through targeted outreach programs.

“SER is constantly exploring new opportunities to share what we and our collaborators across UW and Wyoming are up to, and we’re hoping this podcast reaches the far corners of Wyoming and beyond, to help folks understand all that is being done to positively impact the Cowboy State,” Krutka says. “We place a high value on transparency, education and engagement. If you at all are interested in energy innovation and education in Wyoming, we hope you will tune in.”

Ultimately, the podcast examines energy trends, offers fresh insights and promotes a better understanding of today’s energy issues, solutions and careers, she says.

“Energy has really propelled the development of civilization and yet is something that can be easily taken for granted,” Krutka adds. “Now, we have a new way to share entertaining discussions on the how and the why and address important topics, such as what new technologies will mean for Wyoming and its workforce.”

Topics to be covered include nuclear, oil and gas, coal and carbon engineering, and carbon capture utilization and storage, as well as education, leadership, land management, policy and regulation, and tax frameworks.

With episodes initially scheduled to be released weekly, the podcast will be available to stream on all audio platforms and will be accessible through the SER website at www.uwyo.edu/ser .
