Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men 2024 Stage Three: Key Locations

Stage three of the 20th edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race will challenge riders with a demanding 166 kilometre (103-mile) route from Sheffield to Barnsley, traversing

South Yorkshire's most iconic and challenging climbs, putting the 18 competing teams to the test, and offering both riders and fans an exhilarating day of racing.

South Yorkshire has a strong, long-standing cycling tradition, having hosted prestigious races like a Tour de France stage finish in 2014 and four stages of the Tour de Yorkshire between 2016 and 2019. Barnsley and Sheffield, in particular, have been key players in the cycling scene, hosting multiple stages of these events and consistently welcoming rounds of the Lloyds Bank National Circuit Series.

Want to experience the thrill of stage three up close? We've handpicked the top spots to catch all the action and cheer on the riders as they tackle the region’s challenging terrain.

Stage three will commence in Sheffield, a city not visited by the race since 2006. Starting in the city centre, fans will be able to watch the preparations of teams on Tudor Square outside of the Crucible Theatre from 09:30, with all the riders being presented to the crowd team-by-team on the podium on Arundel Gate from 09:50, ahead of the stage start at 11:00.

King of the Mountains

Following two tough days of climbing, stage three won’t provide any respite for our riders with a gruelling ascent of over 2,200 metres, including three categorised King of the Mountains climbs, to contend. Whilst this might be a challenge for the peloton, fans will have the opportunity to see the world’s best riders tackle challenging ascents with a backdrop of stunning views of the Peak District and South Yorkshire.

The first King of the Mountains climb, Long Lane above Loxley, is a 2.6 kilometre ascent averaging almost 5.7%, with the riders due to top the climb at approximately 11:39. The village is a short distance as the crow flies from the race start and is set in the hills and greenery of Sheffield.

A short descent following Long Lane will take our riders on to the second climb at Jawbone Hill. This 1.6 kilometre climb averaging 9.9% was featured in the second stage of 2014 Tour de France and will be a mental and physical test. Fans can expect the riders to summit the climb at roughly 11:46.

The final categorised climb of the stage comes agonisingly close to the finish following a series of short climbs culminating at Hound Hill, a 1.4-kilometre ascent to Worsbrough Common averaging 5.6%. The summit of the climb, just four kilometres from the finish, is expected to play a crucial role in determining the stage winner so this could be a brilliant place to watch the action unfold on the run into the finish.

Intermediate Sprints

After the initial two climbs, the stage will settle down as it passes through Chapeltown, Wath upon Dearne, Swinton, and Maltby. Fans can watch the sole intermediate sprint in the picturesque market town of Tickhill, about 70 kilometres into the race, as the riders battle for valuable points.

Riders are expected to pass through Tickhill at approximately 12:55, before heading towards Doncaster, passing through Conisbrough and Denaby then taking a loop around the northern part of Barnsley, traversing Royston and Darton.

Barnsley will host the finish of the stage on County Way at The Seam, Barnsley’s digital campus, coming at the end of an 800 metre drag along Old Mill Lane, averaging a 7% incline

Alongside the finish line will be the fan zone with food, drink and entertainment, including a big screen for spectators in Barnsley to follow all of the action via the ITV4 coverage, while enjoying the events on offer. For those riding to the event on two wheels, secure bike parking is available.

How else can I watch the action?

For fans eager to see the cycling superstars compete live at the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men, exclusive premium hospitality packages are now available through Sportive Breaks here .

If you can’t make it to see the action in South Yorkshire in person, live flag to flag coverage will be available on ITV4 and ITVX in the UK, and around the world via other broadcasters, as well as a live stream on the British Cycling YouTube channel.

2024 Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men: a guide to stages 3 and 4

A detailed look at the routes for stages 3 and 4 of the 2024 Tour of Britain Men

' src=

A week after revealing route details for the opening stages of the 20th edition of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men , British Cycling has now published the routes for stages three and four, which will bring the race to South Yorkshire and the East Midlands this September.

Here’s a detailed look at what to expect.

Stage 3 | Sheffield to Barnsley | Thu 5 September

On Thursday, 5 September, the city of Sheffield will host the start of stage three of the Tour of Britain Men, 17 years since the city of steel last hosted the race. The stage is 166 km length and features over 2700 m of elevation.

cycling tour of britain stage 3

From the moment the race kicks off, the riders will face a series of stiff challenges. The route heads west, skirting the edge of the Peak District National Park. The first major test comes 20 km into the start with the King of the Mountains (KOM) climb on Long Lane above Loxley. This one kilometre ascent, averaging almost 9%, marks the start of a tough beginning to the stage.

Just a short descent later, the peloton will tackle the stage’s second KMO climb, Oughtibridge Lane, affectionately known as Jawbone Hill. This 1.7 km climb, with its 9% gradient, was featured in the Tour de France in 2014, and it’s sure to test the riders’ mettle once again.

The terrain settles down as the race winds through Chapeltown, Wath upon Dearne, Swinton, and Maltby, leading to the sole intermediate sprint in the charming market town of Tickhill. This marks the halfway point of the stage.

Skirting Doncaster, the route loops around the north of Barnsley, passing through Royston and Darton. The excitement builds as the riders approach Penistone and the series of short climbs that culminate in the ascent of the final categorised climb, Hound Hill. This 1.5-kilometre climb, averaging nearly 7%, tops out with just four kilometers remaining, which should make it a pivotal moment in the stage.

The finale awaits then in Barnsley. As the riders tackle the final 800 metres, they’ll face an uphill drag along Old Mill Lane and into County Way. With a 7% incline, this last stretch is set to provide a dramatic and challenging finish, ensuring a thrilling end to a grueling stage.

Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men Race Director Rod Ellingworth said: “For the return of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men to South Yorkshire we wanted to create a memorable and tough stage, and we are sure that with the route chosen we have done just that. There is a lot of climbing early on in the stage as we skirt the edge of the Pennines, and then what should be a really exciting finale, with the climb of Hound Hill and the drag up to the finish in Barnsley town centre combining for a tough end to the day’s racing.”

Stage 4 | Derby to Newark-on-Trent | Fri 6 September

The following day, the city of Derby will host the start of stage four, marking a historic moment as it welcomes the Tour of Britain for the first time in its 20-year history. The race will commence outside the iconic Derby Arena, setting the stage for a likely day for the sprinters.

cycling tour of britain stage 3

As the riders set off, they will navigate through the picturesque roads of Derbyshire, passing through Elvaston, Borrowash, West Hallam, and Heanor. This marks the first time the national tour has graced Derbyshire roads since 2015.

Crossing into Nottinghamshire at Eastwood, the race continues through Hucknall, Ravenshead, Blidworth, Southwell, and Tuxford, before the race approaches the intermediate sprint at Collingham, where valuable time bonuses and points for the sprints jersey are up for grabs.

The final leg of the stage takes the riders southward, crossing the River Trent and heading towards the finish line alongside Sconce and Devon Park in Newark-on-Trent. This town has a rich history with the Tour of Britain, having hosted stage finishes before. In 2017, Fernando Gaviria claimed victory here, followed by Olav Kooij in 2023. A sprint finale seems likely again in 2024.

Ellingworth says: “After three tough days of racing, stage four could be the first chance for the sprinters, and having seen the likes of Fernando Gaviria and Olav Kooij win in Newark-on-Trent in the past, we know it is a route and finish that suits the fast men.”

Tour of Britain 2023 route map today: Stage 3 schedule, where to watch, road closures and TV coverage

The howdens stage, which runs from goole to beverley over 154.7km, is one for the sprinters.

The  2023 Tour of Britain enters its third stage today, and will see East Riding of Yorkshire host a full stage of the tour for the first time.

This stage will take place almost 15 years to the day since the event last passed through the county, during a stage that travelled from Hull to Dalby Forest.

Dutch rider Olav Kooij became the first rider in four years to win back-to-back stages of the tour on Monday as he claimed victory in stage 2 in Wrexham . His Belgian Jumbo-Visma teammate Wout van Aert finished third behind BORA–hansgrohe’s Danny van Poppel.

It means Kooij holds the overall lead heading into stage 3 and Jumbo-Visma remain in firm control of the event.

“We went again for another win today – we took control and tried to catch the break which took a huge effort by two of our guys. We went into the last kilometre in a really good position again and were able to take the second win,” Kooij said.

Riders are set to battle it out at the Tour of Britain 2023

After a truncated edition in 2022 due to police having to head off to administer the Queen's funeral, Britain's biggest race - the Tour of Britain - returns for (hopefully) a full run in 2023.

It's a much more compact edition this year with the race taking place mostly in the middle of the country so if you're anywhere south of Manchester and north of Reading you have precious few excuses for not getting to the roadside to cheer on your favourite rider.

Among the riders set to light up the race are previous winner Wout van Aert and 2022 second place finisher Tom Pidcock , who'll hope to go one better in 2023.

Tour of Britain overview

Tour of britain 2023 route.

Stage 1,   Sunday 3 September

Route: Greater Manchester to Altrincham

Today's route is near identical to the final stage of the 2019 tour, starting in Altrincham and travelling to Manchester in an anti-clockwise direction taking in the surrounding area’s undulating terrain, including the category two climb of Grains Bar (2.4km at 5.8%) and category one Ramsbottom Rake (1.3km at 8.8%). Those climbs might not sound like much, but together with a number of unclassified rises were enough to significantly reduce the peloton to just a few dozen riders after Ineos Grenadiers applied the pressure.

The race did eventually culminate in a reduced bunch sprint won by Mathieu van der Poel, but not before we were entertained by a relentless flurry of attacks as teams struggled for control.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 2, Monday 4 September

Route: Wrexham to Wrexham

At just 109.9km, this is a remarkably short stage by any standards, and as a result could witness some atypical racing. Shorter stages tend to produce more intense racing, with riders able to attack earlier on in the knowledge that they won't have to sustain their efforts for as long.

So although the route doesn’t offer many springboards to launch attacks, travelling westwards across the border and into Cheshire rather than eastwards towards the hills of the Clwydian Range to the west, expect riders to try their luck regardless.

Most important of all will be the Eyton Hill, the category three climb summited with just 18.5km left to ride. It’s close enough to the finish for attackers to fully commit themselves, but will the shallow gradients (averaging only around two and three percent) be enough to establish meaningful gaps?

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 3, Tuesday 5 September

Route: Goole to Beverley

Setting off from the small market town of Goole, the riders will head north-eastwards to Bridlington, from where they will travel southwards along the coast and then inland again for a finish in Beverley. For the residents of Beverley, this will be a chance to witness a stage finish after the minster town had previously hosted the beginning of Tour de Yorkshire stages in 2016 and 2018, the former won by Harry Tanfield from a successful break, the latter by Dylan Groenewegen in a sprint.

Much like the course of the town’s famous racecourse, the parcours today before arriving at Beverly is mostly flat, but there are a few potential obstacles to overcome if this is to be a sprint finish. The category three hills up Towthorpe Lane and Langtoft must both be climbed during the first of the stage, and after that comes a stretch of about 35km near the coastline which could, if the wind blows strong and in the right direction, cause echelons. But this should in theory be the most nailed-on stage for the sprinters so far.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 4, Wednesday 6 September

Route: Sherwood Forest to Newark-on-Trent

After setting off from Edwinstone in Sherwood Forest, famous for its association with Robin Hood, the riders face the first to the day’s two category three climbs, Kilton Hill, just 15km into the stage. Then, after briefly crossing into Yorkshire and riding through Haworth, where a monument to Tom Simpsons can be found, they will travel southwards again to tackle the next climb, Red Hill Lane.

There’s a whole 85km between the top of Red Hill Lane and the finish, so plenty of time for the race to settle down for a bunch sprint.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 5, Thursday 7 September

Route: Felixstowe to Felixstowe

Perhaps to make up for the lack of any difficult terrain, the organisers have rendered stage five less straightforward than it would otherwise have been by extending it to a total of 192.4km. That makes it by far the longest stage of the race, and could prevent this from being the predictable sprint stage it looks on paper.

Small undulations in the road that would otherwise have been passed over without a second though will sting the legs of the weaker riders, and being so close to the coast a crosswind could encourage a strong team to the front on any exposed roads.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 6, Friday 8 September

Route: Southend-on-Sea to Harlow

Today’s stage is likely to be the last chance for the sprinters to compete for a stage win. And it should be about as nailed-on for them as any stage in the year’s race — there is only one official climb to be overcome, and it’s only a mild category three one tackled with 46km left between its summit and the finish for the peloton to bring back any optimistic attackers who try to use its shallow gradients to get away.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 7, Saturday 9 September

Route: Tewkesbury to Gloucester

The organisers have made the most of the lumpy terrain of the Cotswolds to devise a route that should be selective, and one of the most important days in the GC race.

There is one climb up the category two Winchcombe Hill just 20km after the roll-out in Tewksbury, but the real action will be reserved for the final 30km. First the category two Crawley Hill, which features a nasty ramp at over 20%, then an uncategorized yet deceptively hard 3km rise to the village of Edge, which includes a similarly sharp ramp of 15%.

Tour of Britain route profile 2023

Stage 8, Sunday 10 September

Route: Margam Country Park to Caerphilly

The climbs to be taken on might not be especially different than those that have preceded them earlier in the week, but there is still a notable upgrade in terms of severity.

That’s clear when the race heads up to the outskirts of Bannau Brycheiniog (formerly Brecon Beacons) national park to take on the first two climbs of the day, Rhigos and Bryn Du, which have both been designated the maximum difficulty racing of category one.

And after a 35km south-easterly trek from the top of the latter comes a double-ascent of the day’s most important climb, and the one on which the entire fate of the Tour of Britain could be decided — Caerphilly Mountain.

In truth it’s more of a hill than a mountain, lasting just 1.3km, but that’s still enough road for its viscous average gradient of 10% to really sting and force a selection.

The anticipation for the restarted Tour of Britain Women is increasing as the route for stage three, set to take place in Warrington on Saturday 8 June, has been revealed.

Following two demanding days in Wale s, where riders will have tackled over 280km and 3,800m of climbing, the peloton will arrive in Warrington for what promises to be an exhilarating stage. With its flat terrain, stage three is expected to witness the first bunch sprint finish of the tour, captivating spectators with high-speed action over the 106.8km route.

Commencing and concluding in front of the iconic Golden Gates of Warrington Town Hall, the stage will kick off at 11:00. Riders will navigate through picturesque Cheshire West and Chester villages, including Higher Whitley, Great Budworth, and Wincham, before facing the day’s main challenges: the Queen of the Mountains segments.

The route will see riders ascend the climbs from Pexhill Road to Broken Cross and from Pott Shrigley in the foothills of the Peak District, offering opportunities to earn valuable QOM points. As the peloton speeds through Mottram St Andrew and Knutsford, fans can expect a thrilling intermediate sprint in Mere.

A rapid descent from Appleton Thorn will set the stage for a dramatic finale as the peloton races back to Warrington, aiming to cross the line at approximately 14:18.

Expressing excitement about the event, Warrington Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Jean Flaherty, stated, “Many will remember our iconic Golden Gates being the dramatic finishing point for a Tour of Britain stage in 2021. I am sure we will see crowds gather again at the Golden Gates to see the start and finish of the women’s stage.”

Tour of Britain Race Director, Rod Ellingworth, expressed gratitude to the event’s partners and highlighted Warrington’s proven track record in hosting sporting spectacles. He added, “We are incredibly grateful for the support and cooperation of our partners at Warrington Borough Council, Chester, Cheshire East and Cheshire West who have enabled us to confirm the details of this exciting stage in such a short timeframe.”

The men’s Tour of Britain last paid a visit to Warrington in 2021 when Ethan Hayter won the sprint.

  • Men’s Tour of Britain Route Revealed (Stages 5 & 6)

cycling tour of britain stage 3

The routes for the final pair of stages of this year’s Men’s Tour of Britain have been announced, to complete the stage details for September’s 20th edition of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race.

Men’s Tour of Britain Route Revealed (Stages 5 & 6)

Stages five and six of the race will see the men’s peloton visit West Northamptonshire for the first time, for a 147-kilometre (91-mile) stage starting out from the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus and finishing on Derngate in Northampton town centre, before concluding a day later on familiar roads in East Suffolk with a 158-kilometre (98.5-mile) leg from Lowestoft to Felixstowe.

Three intermediate sprints, each with time bonuses, on the final leg at Beccles, Aldeburgh, and Grundisburgh, will ensure riders are fighting for the bonus seconds right down to the finish line on Sea Road in Felixstowe.

Commenting on the route announcement, Men’s Tour of Britain Race Director Rod Ellingworth, said: “The penultimate stage of this year’s race is in area new to the Men’s Tour of Britain, which is always exciting as it means that the majority of the peloton will be unfamiliar with the roads that we will be using.”

“With the stage being on a Saturday and its central location, we are expecting a lot of fans to be at the roadside to cheer the riders on. With the start on the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus so close to the finish line in the town centre, it will make for a great location for fans of all ages to come down and see the start and finish of the stage and to make a day out of it.

Looking ahead to the final stage, Ellingworth added: “This year’s final stage of the Men’s Tour of Britain is deceptive, with plenty of challenges to overcome before our 2024 champion can be crowned on Sea Road in Felixstowe. Suffolk has always provided great racing in the Tour, and this year will be no different, with sections along the exposed coastline that will be a real challenge if the wind blows, while the three intermediate sprints will ensure competitive racing thanks to the time bonuses on offer, which could become very important if the overall lead is slender going into the last day.

“Our thanks go to our partners at East Suffolk Council, and in both Lowestoft and Felixstowe, for hosting the final stage of this year’s Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men.”

The stage will get underway at 11:00 from the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus, where a full day of activities and entertainment is planned, including race coverage on big screens, just a short walk away from the town centre finish location.

During the stage riders will tackle the final pair of categorised King of the Mountains climbs of the 2024 race, at Newnham Hill and Bullshill, just south of Daventry, and an intermediate sprint at Holcot, at the eastern end of the Pitsford Water causeway.

Leaving the Waterside Campus the stage heads west from Northampton, through Daventry, and then onto a loop south of the town over the two King of the Mountains climbs and through Abthorpe, Wappenham, Helmdon, Culworth, Byfield and Hellidon, before looping around Northampton via Watford, West Haddon, Naseby, Kelmarsh and Brixworth for the approach to the finish via Sywell and Ecton.

The stage is expected to finish with a sprint in Northampton town centre between 14:23 and 15:05.

While it is the first time that the men’s Tour has come to Northampton, the town’s Derngate hosted the first ever stage finish of the women’s Tour, won by Swedish rider Emma Johansson, in May 2014, and Daventry in West Northamptonshire has twice also hosted the women’s race, with a start in 2017 and a stage finish in 2018, won by Coryn Labecki.

STAGE SIX East Suffolk will hold the final stage of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race on Sunday 8 September for the first time, with a 158-kilometre (98.5-mile) stage between Lowestoft and Felixstowe.

cycling tour of britain stage 3

Stage six will get underway at 10:30 from Lowestoft’s Promenade, the first time that the town has hosted the Men’s Tour of Britain, with the stage heading inland via Beccles and Bungay, and then south through Halesworth, Framlingham, and Saxmundham, before racing along the Suffolk coast between Thorpeness and Aldeburgh.

The second half of the route takes in Snape, Wickham Market, Kesgrave, and Martlesham, before a run in and finish on Sea Road in Felixstowe familiar to riders from 12-months ago, when Wout van Aert took a stage win in Suffolk. The stage is expected to finish between 14:08 and 14:53.

The stage will feature three intermediate sprints – each with time bonuses – at Beccles, Aldeburgh, and Grundisburgh, that will help shape the outcome of who follows in the wheel tracks of Wout van Aert as Men’s Tour of Britain champion.

STAGES Stage 1: Tuesday 3 September — Kelso to Kelso Stage 2: Wednesday 4 September — Darlington to Redcar Stage 3: Thursday 5 September — Sheffield to Barnsley Stage 4: Friday 6 September — Derby to Newark-on-Trent Stage 5: Saturday 7 September — Northampton to Northampton Stage 6: Sunday 8 September — Lowestoft to Felixstowe

Tour of Britain overview

The Tour of Britain 2023 starts off on September 3 in Greater Manchester and concludes in Caerphilly, South Wales eight days later. The final stage will feature a return to the legendary Caerphilly Mountain, not undertaken since 2013, where the peloton will have to twice face the 1.3km ascent which averages 10.1% across its 1.3km.

This year’s race, ranked at UCI ProSeries level, marks the 19th edition of the modern Tour of Britain. No other incarnation of the professional race, which has its origins back in 1945, has ever run for longer than eight years.

The final three stages of last year’s edition were cancelled following the death of Queen Elizabeth ll.  Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar) was leading the overall classification following stage 5, and therefore became the overall winner of the 2022 Tour of Britain.

Previous overall winners of the Tour of Britain include Wout van Aert (2021), Mathieu van der Poel (2019), Julian Alaphilippe (2018), Lars Boom (2011 and 2017), Steven Cummings (2016) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (2009 and 2015), Bradley Wiggins (2013), and Dylan van Baarle (2014).

He is now set to spearhead a strong Soudal-QuickStep squad at the Tour of Britain, which begins in the Scottish Borders on Tuesday 3 September.

Two-time world champion Julian Alaphilippe will co-lead the six-strong unit at a race he won in 2018, with former Team Sky stalwart Gianni Moscon also part of the team.

“I am looking forward to returning to racing at the Tour of Britain, after my post-Olympics break,” Evenepoel said. “My last period of racing was very special for me and it was great that I could recharge a little afterwards, but it’s time to pin on a number again as I look forward to the big races of this autumn.

“It is especially nice that I can start in Scotland, where I have the memories of winning the Worlds ITT race last summer.”

Evenepoel and Alaphilippe are likely to battle for overall victory across the six stages with Tom Pidcock , who is expected to lead the Ineos Grenadiers after his own Olympic success in August.

Tom Pidcock will compete at the Tour of Britain

Pidcock defended his mountain bike gold medal with a brilliant cross country victory in Paris and will compete in his home race for the fourth time.

“The Tour of Britain is a really special race for me,” Pidcock said. Returning to the UK after a such busy year of racing and to pin on numbers in front of the passionate home fans, always provides great motivation.

“I can’t wait to get out there with my Ineos Grenadier teammates in our home race and we look forward to seeing you all out along the road.”

After an opening stage starting and finishing in Kelso, the race heads south across the border for five stages in England.

It concludes on Sunday 8 September with a 158.4km route down the East Anglian coast from Lowestoft to Felixstowe.

Tour of Britain 2024: The Route

Remco Evenepoel - Tour of Britain 2024: The Route

Stage 1 of the Tour of Britain is played out in the Scottish Borders. After a 181.9 kilometres race with an elevation gain of 2,381 metres, the riders cross the line on the cobbled market square in Kelso. The last hill is crested with 23 kilometres to go.

The riders cross from Scotland into England in the 2nd stage . They set off from Darlington and finish on the seafront in Redcar after conquering 2,594 metres of climbing over a 152.1 kilometres route. The iconic Saltburn Bank ascent spices up the finale.

At 166 kilometres, the 3rd stage goes from Sheffield to Barnsley. The elevation gain adds up to 2,736 metres, while the last climb tops out with 4 kilometres to go.

The riders travel from Derby to Newark-on-Trent in the 4th stage of the Tour of Britain. It’s a relatively short test of 138.5 kilometres with 1,229 metres of climbing.

The penultimate stage loops from Northampton back to Northampton on a route covering 146.9 kilometres and featuring and elevation gain of 1,276 metres.

The final stage takes the riders through Suffolk from Lowestoft to Felixstowe. The 158.4 kilometres race is expected to come down to a bunch sprint, as the elevation gain is merely 817 metres.

Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men 2024 Stage Two: Key locations

After stage one in the scottish borders, the world’s top cyclists will tackle a challenging stage through tees valley on wednesday 4 september and you could be there to see it.

Starting in Darlington, 15 years on from the last stage start in the town, the riders will head through the North York Moors National Park to the coast at Robin Hood’s Bay, and finish in Redcar on the seafront. The 155-kilometre route includes several challenging climbs, totalling almost 2,500 metres of ascent, and one intermediate sprint.

To help you make the most out of the day, we’ve picked out the best locations along the route to catch the action and get up close and personal with some of the world’s best riders.

Following a tough first day of riding, our 18 teams will depart from West Row below the Darlington clock tower, before heading east through Middleton St George and onto Eaglescliffe and Yarm.

Fans will be able to watch the teams and riders prepare for the stage in the Market Square, with riders being presented to the crowd team-by-team on the podium from 09:50 ahead of the stage start at 11:00.

If you’re cycling to the start then sheltered, lockable bike parking is available in the Town Hall plaza, just a short walk away from the start line.

Intermediate Sprints

Just 24.5 kilometres into the stage, riders will face the first and only intermediate sprint of the stage in the market town of Stokesley. Fans can see the peloton battle it out for all important points in the shadow of historic buildings, such as the St Peter and St Paul’s Church dating back as far as the 12th century.

King of the Mountains

Stage two could be a climbers paradise, with three categorised climbs in and around Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay making for a challenging portion of the stage.

The first climb of the day is Ugglebarnby, with riders expected at the summit at approximately 13:01. Averaging over 8% across its one-kilometre length, this King of the Mountains climb will come after a series of unclassified climbs around Commondale, Castleton, and Danby. As well as the action on the road, fans can expect stunning views, overlooking the North York Moors National Park.

The riders will then drop down into the picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay to tackle the second categorised climb of the day, rising up Raw Pasture Bank from almost sea level at an average of 7.5%. The route will then head past the iconic Whitby Abbey before descending into the famous North Yorkshire seaside town.

The final categorised climb of the day that faces riders is the 1.7 kilometre Lythe Bank, averaging 7.7% as it ascends from Sandsend before ultimately taking the race past Staithes into Redcar & Cleveland. Fans can expect incredible views out over the coast as the riders battle for vital King of the Mountains points.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Whilst not a categorised climb or intermediate sprint, Saltburn-by-the-sea is a hugely popular location on the route for fans to catch the action.

Riders will tackle the climb from the seafront up Saltburn Road twice at approximately 14:11 and 14:35 as part of a lap made up of many of the roads used in June’s Lloyds Bank British National Road Race Championships, won by Ethan Hayter (INEOS Grenadiers).

The atmosphere will certainly be lively here, with the popular ‘Beefeater Bend’ costumed fan group planning to be present on the day to cheer on the riders.

The stage finish is on Coast Road in Redcar, alongside Zetland Park, where there will be a big screen showing the ITV4 coverage of the race throughout the day so fans don’t miss out on any of the action.

After conquering nearly 2,500 metres of elevation during the stage, riders may find some respite in the final kilometres along the North Sea. Yet, the exposed nature of Coast Road means that wind could still pose a challenge in the final part of the stage.

Fans will be able to cheer the riders home and share in the celebrations of the stage victory and jersey presentations once the racing has finished at approximately 14:52.

Away from the racing the fan village will feature food, drink and entertainment, including the always popular Fat Cat Brass Band that will be keeping the atmosphere going throughout the day, while the Thingymajig Theatre will have Hieronymus the Hippopotamus, the biggest, sweetest pachyderm on wheel and propelled purely by pedal power, meeting the crowd and performing songs.

How else can I watch the action?

For fans eager to see the cycling superstars compete live at the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men, exclusive premium hospitality packages are now available through Sportive Breaks here .

If you can’t make it to Tees Valley, live flag to flag coverage will be available on ITV4 and ITVX in the UK, and around the world via other broadcasters, as well as a live stream on the British Cycling YouTube channel.
