Tour of Britain 2023 route map today: Stage 3 schedule, where to watch, road closures and TV coverage

The howdens stage, which runs from goole to beverley over 154.7km, is one for the sprinters.

The  2023 Tour of Britain enters its third stage today, and will see East Riding of Yorkshire host a full stage of the tour for the first time.

This stage will take place almost 15 years to the day since the event last passed through the county, during a stage that travelled from Hull to Dalby Forest.

Dutch rider Olav Kooij became the first rider in four years to win back-to-back stages of the tour on Monday as he claimed victory in stage 2 in Wrexham . His Belgian Jumbo-Visma teammate Wout van Aert finished third behind BORA–hansgrohe’s Danny van Poppel.

It means Kooij holds the overall lead heading into stage 3 and Jumbo-Visma remain in firm control of the event.

“We went again for another win today – we took control and tried to catch the break which took a huge effort by two of our guys. We went into the last kilometre in a really good position again and were able to take the second win,” Kooij said.

The route for stage three of the inaugural Tour of Britain Women has today been unveiled as Warrington prepares to host the world’s best riders and teams on Saturday 8th June.

Women’s Tour of Britain: Stage 3 Route The route for stage three of the inaugural Women’s Tour of Britain has today been unveiled as Warrington prepares to host the world’s best riders and teams on Saturday 8th June. The peloton will have amassed over 280km and 3,800m of climbing in the opening two days of racing in Wales before crossing the border to arrive in Warrington for day three.

As the flattest of the four stages, Warrington’s crowds are expected to see the first bunch sprint finish of the 2024 tour and incredible speeds as riders do battle over the 106.8km stage.

Stage 3: Warrington – Warrington (106.8km, 792m ascent) The stage will start and finish in front of the iconic Golden Gates of Warrington Town Hall, with riders set to depart at 11:00. The peloton will immediately head south, crossing the River Mersey and Great Manchester Canal, passing the stunning Walton Hall and Gardens and then on through the picturesque Cheshire West and Chester villages of Higher Whitley, Great Budworth and Wincham.

The anti-clockwise route will gradually start to ramp up from around the 25km mark, before the bunch faces the two main climbs of the day, where points in the two Queen of the Mountains (QOM) segments are up for grabs. Riders will ascend the 5.66km-long climb from Pexhill Road to Broken Cross where the first QOM points will be up for grabs, before descending into Prestbury, which sits in sight of the Pennine foothills.

Crossing the River Bollin, the route then ramps back up to Pott Shrigley in the foothills of the Peak District where further QOM points await. Two further kickers in Mottram St Andrew will add a further sting before the route passes through Knutsford and onto Mere for the intermediate sprint.

A short, sharp descent from Appleton Thorn will set the peloton up for a fast, flat run back into Warrington for what is expected to be a nail-biting finish, with riders expected to cross the line at around 14:18. The Tour of Britain Women will then travel north to Greater Manchester for the race’s conclusion on Sunday 9 June.

Tour of Britain Race Director, Rod Ellingworth, said: “After two tough days of climbing in stages one and two in Wales, stage three will offer riders and fans something a little different with what we are expecting to be the first bunch sprint finish of this year’s race.”

“We are incredibly grateful for the support and cooperation of our partners at Warrington Borough Council, Chester, Cheshire East and Cheshire West who have enabled us to confirm the details of this exciting stage in such a short timeframe. Warrington has a proven track record in hosting spectacular sporting events which always attract vibrant and passionate crowds, and we have no doubt they’ll do the same when they host the Tour of Britain Women next month.”

  • in Women's Cycling

The anticipation for the restarted Tour of Britain Women is increasing as the route for stage three, set to take place in Warrington on Saturday 8 June, has been revealed.

Following two demanding days in Wale s, where riders will have tackled over 280km and 3,800m of climbing, the peloton will arrive in Warrington for what promises to be an exhilarating stage. With its flat terrain, stage three is expected to witness the first bunch sprint finish of the tour, captivating spectators with high-speed action over the 106.8km route.

Commencing and concluding in front of the iconic Golden Gates of Warrington Town Hall, the stage will kick off at 11:00. Riders will navigate through picturesque Cheshire West and Chester villages, including Higher Whitley, Great Budworth, and Wincham, before facing the day’s main challenges: the Queen of the Mountains segments.

Women’s Tour of Britain Stage 3: Warrington Route

The route will see riders ascend the climbs from Pexhill Road to Broken Cross and from Pott Shrigley in the foothills of the Peak District, offering opportunities to earn valuable QOM points. As the peloton speeds through Mottram St Andrew and Knutsford, fans can expect a thrilling intermediate sprint in Mere.

A rapid descent from Appleton Thorn will set the stage for a dramatic finale as the peloton races back to Warrington, aiming to cross the line at approximately 14:18.

Expressing excitement about the event, Warrington Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Jean Flaherty, stated, “Many will remember our iconic Golden Gates being the dramatic finishing point for a Tour of Britain stage in 2021. I am sure we will see crowds gather again at the Golden Gates to see the start and finish of the women’s stage.”

Tour of Britain Race Director, Rod Ellingworth, expressed gratitude to the event’s partners and highlighted Warrington’s proven track record in hosting sporting spectacles. He added, “We are incredibly grateful for the support and cooperation of our partners at Warrington Borough Council, Chester, Cheshire East and Cheshire West who have enabled us to confirm the details of this exciting stage in such a short timeframe.”

The men’s Tour of Britain last paid a visit to Warrington in 2021 when Ethan Hayter won the sprint.

Following the cancellation of the 2021 edition owing to the death of Her Majesty The Queen, organisers SweetSpot will continue to work with the local authorities who were due to host stages to explore opportunities to host the race in the future.

One of the most highly anticipated professional cycling events in the United Kingdom is all set to kick off in the first week of September. The Tour of Britain is gearing up for its 2021 edition, which will also be the 14th edition since the reincarnation of the event with several changes in 2004. The cycling Tour of Britain route was unveiled back in February 2021 with the addition of a time trial stage. It now means that the Tour of Britain 2021 has nine stages compared to 8 in recent years. Even those eight Tour of Britain stages were a bump up from the five stages the event used to have in 2004.

The Surprising Route

Tour of Britain 2021 race director Mick Bennett unveiled the cycling Tour of Britain route in the hope of keeping up with the recent momentum of popularity gathered by the event. Several changes to the Tour of Britain stages over the last few years have made it more competitive and brought it to the levels of Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana. Attracting the best riders in the world to the United Kingdom is one of the sole objectives of this event.

George Square in Glasgow will form the location for the start of the 2021 edition. The nine Tour of Britain stages will see riders cover just over 1300 km from September 4 to September 11. This will certainly take its toll on the riders, but there is a consensus that the 2021 edition will be slightly easier than the 2015 edition. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for riders to make use of every Tour of Britain stage to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Qatar. This reason alone is expected to increase general interest amongst riders in the competition.

Tour of Britain 2021 – Challenging Parts

The upcoming competition brings a lot of aspects like challenging races and sprint finishes. These are aspects which will have a lot to do at the World Championships. Glasgow last played host to the start of the event back in 2008. It provides a sprint finish to the Castle Douglas since there is no prominent climbs along the way. Stage two goes through various sections of the enchanting Lake District, which may not offer anything out of the blue for experienced riders. The Lake District has been a standard fare of the Tour of Britain in recent years. Even though much of the route will be familiar, riders will have to be prepared for the climb from Ambleside towards the end of the stage.

Stage three at the Congleton marks the beginning of the tough stages. As expected, the stage four takes its toll since it is the longest. As the competition enters into the final stages, riders go through Wales and Bath before a time trial event near London. The final stage will be a replica of the final stage in 2015, which received a lot of rave reviews. Each stage is tough and this will be on the minds of punters when it comes to Tour of Britain bet online.

The growing popularity of the event has also resulted in a number of punters looking for good Tour of Britain bet online opportunities. These opportunities are presented because of the Tour of Britain 2021 odds, which are once again leaning towards the favourites like Alberto Contador. Even though it makes a lot of sense to make an early judgement, Tour of Britain 2021 odds at a later stage will provide a more accurate picture about the favourites for the title.

Stage 3 Is the Longest Stage of the Tour de France—but It Should Still Be a Day for the Sprinters

Stage 3 - monday, july 1 - piacenza to torino - 230.5km.

S tage 3 of the 2024 Tour de France brings a mix of good news and bad news for the riders. The good news: after two stages with a combined 5,500m of elevation gain, there’s relatively little climbing on the roads between Piacenza and Torino. The bad news: at 230.5km, Stage 3 is the longest of the entire 2024 Tour de France, and with high temperatures again expected throughout the late-afternoon, it’s going to be another hot day on the bike.

The stage begins in Piacenza, a town in the heart of Emilia-Romagna that’s the birthplace of Giorgio Armani. From there the race heads west toward Torino, through the Lombardy region of northern Italy, and into the Piedmont region that sits at the foothill of the Alps. A breakaway will certainly escape during the first hour of the stage, but with the sprinters’ teams eager to give their fast men their first chance to win a stage, they won’t survive.

Along the way, the peloton will tackle three Category 4 climbs, but with only one point available to the rider who’s first over the summit of each one, Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility)–who will start the stage wearing the green jersey as the leader of the Tour’s Points competition but also holds an 11-point advantage over France’s Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition–will at least be wearing the polka dot jersey into Stage 4.

The last of these three climbs–the Côte de Sommariva Perno–comes about 50km from the finish, which is more than enough time for the sprinters’ teams to reel in any remaining escapees, get themselves organized for the finale, and with more intense heat expected, pace their sprinters back to the bunch if they were dropped on the climb.

The pace will be intense as the race heads into Torino. It’s a flat run-in to the finish line, and the riders will take a long straight road into the heart of the city. But things will get dicey inside the final kilometer thanks to two hard left-hand corners, the first with about 900m to go and the second with about 700m to go.

Anyone wishing to win the stage will need to be at the front of the bunch heading into these corners, so don’t be surprised if teams are racing for the red kite as if it’s the finish line. At 500m to go the road bends slightly to the left, and from that point the riders will be able to see the line.

Luckily, this will be the first of six stages in this year’s Tour de France that will test new modifications to a safety regulation that sees the traditional 3km “safe zone” extended to 5km. This means that riders will not lose any time due to crashes or mechanicals inside the last 5km of the stage, so–in theory at least–that GC contenders and their teams won’t have to fight with the sprinters in their teams at the front of the bunch.

Riders still need to finish with the leading peloton in order to be given the same finish time, but now they can sit closer to the back of the group heading into the finish line and therefore create less-congested, safer conditions at the front.

Riders to Watch

Stage 3 is the first chance for the sprinters to win a stage of the 2024 Tour de France, and Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck)–who won four stages and the green jersey in last year’s Tour–is the top favorite. The Belgian and his team stayed out of trouble during the opening weekend, likely because he’s targeting Monday’s finish in Torino. With the Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel–the current world champion–leading him out, Philipsen will be tough to beat.

It will be interesting to see how Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) and the Netherlands’ Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich PostNL) fare on Stage 3. Both sprinters spent a considerable amount of time suffering off the back of the race on Stages 1 and 2–the heat was just too much for them. We wonder if they’ll be in it to win it on Monday–especially with a trip through the Alps on Tuesday.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who took the yellow jersey on Stage 2, should have no problems defending his lead on the Tour’s General Classification. The sprinters should pick-up the time bonuses available at the end of the stage, so assuming the 25-year-old finishes alongside his closest rivals, he will wear the jersey during Tuesday’s trip through the Alps.

How to Watch Stage 3 of the Tour de France

You can stream Stage 3 of the 2024 Tour de France on NBC’s Peacock ($5.99/month or $59.99/year). If you’re looking for ad-free coverage, you’ll need a subscription to Peacock Premium Plus, which runs $11.99 per month or $119.99 for the year.

With a relatively easy stage and a field sprint expected in Torino, feel free to tune-in late. The stage is expected to end around 11:15 a.m. EDT, so check-in at around 10:45 a.m. EDT to make sure the race isn’t ahead of schedule (we don’t think it will be), and then watch the sprinters wind things up for a fast finish with about 10km to go.

Jasper Philipsen will be targeting his first stage win of the 2024 Tour, but could this be the day for Mark Cavendish?

Tour de france 2024 stage 3 preview – cavendish and philipsen headline as the sprinters' race begins.

Two days of suffering in the hills and the heat before Monday's 231km sprint stage from Piacenza to Turin

Reigning green jersey Jasper Philipsen and Mark Cavendish, in search of stage win 35, headline the 2024 Tour de France's first sprint showdown

Stage 3 sprints

After two hot, hard opening stages of the 2024 Tour de France, the sprinters 'finally' get their chance at glory on Monday's third stage to Turin.

Only 10 hours of racing have passed since the 176 starters rolled out in Florence to kick off the Grand Tour, but the opening weekend might have felt like a lifetime for some of the fastest men in the gruppo .

The likes of Jasper Philipsen, Mark Cavendish , Fabio Jakobsen, and Fernando Gaviria certainly haven't been the quickest over the hilly terrain that has characterised the 305km of racing so far, with time gaps in the region of an hour already separating them from the top of the general classification.

The sprint superstars have all wilted racing through the 35°C heat over 13 classified climbs of the Apennines thus far. The overwhelmingly flat run north – and temperatures dipping into the mid-20s – on Monday will provide a welcome respite, even if the stage still reaches a lengthy 231km.

Cavendish, the brightest star among the sprint corps even if Philipsen last summer proved himself the quickest sprinter in the world, was the most prominent casualty during Saturday's opening stage.

Of course, with 34 stage wins to his name and a possible record-breaking 35th on the way, the TV cameras were on hand to capture his struggle – and his vomiting. "I was seeing stars. It was so hard," he said later.

On Sunday morning ahead of stage 3, his Astana directeur sportif Mark Renshaw explained that the situation wasn't as dire as it might have looked on TV.

"We knew it was always going to be hard and, as Cav mentioned, we have all the power profiles and estimations that AI and everything can give us," Renshaw said. "But adaptation to the heat is individual for the riders.

"It's so hot, there's so much fluid intake, and [Cavendish] went a little bit in the red on the first long climb. As he said, he would've liked to have hung on for longer, but it went to plan.

"We were always two minutes inside the predictions for power and time, and as long as you keep going – without illness – there's no problem. It doesn't look good on TV with the whole team back there chopping off, but in reality, it was a little bit slower than even we predicted."

In the end, Cavendish, his Astana teammates, and Jakobsen finished 39 minutes down as other sprinters – including Philipsen, Gaviria, Dylan Groenewegen, and Biniam Girmay – finished around 10 minutes up the road.

Sunday's stage 2 to Bologna brought more heat, hills, and hardships, with the fastmen coming in 20 minutes down or more. But now, provided they haven't suffered too badly, the battle for sprint stage glory and the green jersey begins.

The man headlining the fight for the latter is, of course, Philipsen, the reigning champion and a man who won four stages last summer. The Belgian proved himself as the fastest sprinter in the world at last year's Tour and his all-star lead-out man Mathieu van der Poel also showed that Alpecin-Deceuninck have the best lead-out in the business. Look for them to start 2024's sprints with a bang on the Corso Galileo Ferraris.

The other headliner is Cavendish, the 39-year-old reunited with Michael Mørkøv in search of win number 35. As Belgium will dissect Philipsen's sprinting and results, Britain will be doing the same for Cavendish.

He's tasted victory in Turin before – well, in nearby Rivoli – at the 2022 Milano-Torino. Over two years later, that result will have little bearing on Monday's, though digging through a list of his career win locations demonstrates the breadth of his palmarès across the years.

It remains to be seen whether he, with over 17 years of professional racing in his legs, will be immediately up to speed off the back of two gruelling days out, or if he's aiming to grow into the race and hit top speed later on as one of the other sprint stages – with eight to nine expected – unfolds. Whichever is the case, Cavendish will be closely watched, both inside and outside the peloton, and his race will be analysed over and over.

Beyond the two biggest draws, there are plenty of contenders worth considering, from the in-form Belgian champion Arnaud De Lie to Dutchmen Jakobsen and Groenewegen, another top green jersey contender is Mads Pedersen , and former top contenders including Gaviria, Sam Bennett, Pascal Ackermann, and Arnaud Démare.

"Everything is in place," Renshaw said of his team's plans – and no doubt those of the names listed above – ahead of stage 3.

"I know how the climbers say that the Tour starts in the third week but tomorrow the Tour starts for us, which is exciting."

Stage 3 trivia

  • 20 years ago, four Italian teams (Saeco, Fassa Bortolo, Domina Vacanze, and Alessio-Bianchi) and 30 Italian riders took on the Tour de France. This year their number is zero (0) and there are not even enough riders to fill out one squad – just seven. Matteo Sobrero is the day's local man as the race passes through his hometown of Alba 167km in. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider is making his Tour debut in aid of GC contender Primož Roglič.
  • On the Tour a decade ago, Marcel Kittel won stage 3, the final leg of a British Grand Départ, in London. The retired Peter Sagan and Mark Renshaw filled out the stage podium, though several of the names further down the top 15 – Kristoff, Démare, Danny van Poppel, and Bryan Coquard – will be in action this time around.
  • Three meagre fourth-category classified climbs are dotted throughout the long stage, though the hillock at 70.8km is more notable than the rest. It's named for Italian cycling legend and two-time Tour champion Fausto Coppi as the race passes through the town he called home, Tortona.
  • The stage marks the debut test of the modified 3km rule, which will see GC times instead taken 5km from the finish in a bid to improve rider safety with fewer rider jostling for position at the head of the peloton on the final run to the line.
  • Intermediate sprint at Alessandria, km 94.3

Stage 3 mountains

  • Côte de Tortone - Fausto Coppi (1.1km at 6.3%), cat. 4, km 70.8
  • Côte de Barbaresco (1.5km at 6.5%), cat. 4, km 156.1
  • Côte de Sommariva Perno (3.1km at 4.6%), cat. 4, km 181.4

One day after the Tour de France made its first Grand Départ from Italy in the history of the race, Stage 2 of the race continued through Italy and ended in Bologna.

French rider Kevin Vauquelin won the day in Stage 2, making it back-to-back days with a French rider winning the stage. Vauquelin's win also brought his team – Arkéa - B&B Hotels – its first stage victory at the Tour de France in 11 tries at the race.

Unlike with Stage 1 , which saw nearly 50 riders finishing within five seconds of the leader, Vauquelin finished Stage 2 nearly 40 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor, Norwegian cyclist Jonas Abrahamsen .

Here's how the classification at the 2024 Tour de France looks after two days of racing.

What to Know About This Year’s Tour de France (Which Begins in Italy)

Two previous winners are the leading contenders to win cycling’s most famous race, which, in a rarity, does not end in Paris.

A large pack of bicycle riders heads forward with large crowds watching from both sides.

By Victor Mather

For three weeks starting Saturday, the world’s best cyclists will do battle in the Tour de France, racing through valleys, hills and high mountains. Though 176 riders will start, most eyes will be on a pair of two-time winners who seek title No. 3.

After more than 2,000 miles and dozens of punishing climbs, will the winner be Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, who took the last two Tours de France but was hurt in a crash this year? Or Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia, the 2020 and 2021 winner ? Or will an unexpected contender jump up and surprise them?

And, wait: Is it really the Tour de France if the race doesn’t finish on the Champs-Élysées? Here’s a primer to read before the race gets underway.

Where will they race?

For the first time, the race will start in Italy , with the opening stage beginning in Florence and winding through the Apennine Mountains to Rimini, a city on the Adriatic coast. It will be more difficult than most opening stages, with several uphill climbs.

After a few days in Italy, the race will enter France, then go counterclockwise around the country, passing through the Alps, the Massif Central, the Pyrenees and then the Alps again.

Who are the favorites?

Vingegaard won last year’s event by an emphatic seven and a half minutes. But after a good start to the 2024 cycling season, he crashed badly in the Tour of the Basque Country in April and spent 12 days in the hospital with a broken collarbone. He is expected to ride in the Tour de France, but there is uncertainty as to what kind of shape he will be in.

As a result, Pogacar, who has been in fine form, is the favorite to win and regain his crown.

Pogacar rode in the Giro d’Italia, or Tour of Italy, in May. Unlike riders in that race who hold back to preserve their strength for the Tour de France, he gave it his all, winning by almost 10 minutes. If Pogacar claims the Tour as well, he will be the first cyclist since Marco Pantani, in 1998, to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.

After the big two, other possible contenders include Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, the 2023 Giro winner, and Remco Evenepoel of Belgium, who won the 2022 Tour of Spain.

Though an individual wins the Tour, his team can help a lot, pacing him in the mountains and blocking attacks from rivals. Last year’s leading team, Jumbo-Visma (now Visma–Lease a Bike) has broken up; Vingegaard is still its leader, but Roglic left to join Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. UAE Team Emirates will support Pogacar with a squad that includes Adam Yates of Britain, a rider with the talent to win the Tour himself; he placed third last year.

Tell me the days that really matter.

The first stage to focus on is July 2, when the riders travel from Italy to France. It includes a climb up the Galibier, one of the Tour’s toughest mountains, and one that still has snow on the side of the roads.

In the midst of a week of flat stages that won’t change the leaderboard much, there is a time trial on July 5 in Burgundy wine country. The riders will race alone against the clock, with no help from teammates, which is why a time trial is known as “the race of truth.”

The real action comes at the end, with five mountain stages. The July 13 stage is particularly notable; it includes a climb up the Tourmalet in the Pyrenees and ends with an uphill — or more accurately, up-mountain — finish that is sure to winnow out any pretenders. Also make note of July 14, 17, 19 and 20 as four more brutal mountain stages where the Tour is likely to be won, or lost.

But even the flat stages, which are usually won by sprinters and seldom affect the overall standings, may have some extra interest this year. The great sprinter Mark Cavendish, 39, has 34 career stage victories and needs one more to break the record he shares with Eddy Merckx, the dominant rider of the 1960s and ’70s.

What’s different this year?

The day after that last mountain stage, the race will end, but not with the traditional ceremonial cruise down the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Instead, the field will hold a time trial to finish the Tour for the first time since 1989. If the race is close, the winner could be decided on that final day, as it was in 1989. That year, the American Greg LeMond snatched the Tour from Laurent Fignon of France in a time trial by a mere eight seconds, still the closest margin in history.

To avoid the Paris Olympics, which open five days later, the time trial will run from Monaco to Nice. It is the first time since 1974 the race has not ended on the Champs-Élysées and the first time ever it has not ended in Paris or its environs.

Remind me what the jerseys mean.

In each stage, whoever is the overall leader wears the yellow jersey to make him easier to spot for TV viewers and the thousands of fans along the route.

But there are other jerseys, too. Finishing near the front in individual stages, especially flat ones, earns points toward the green jersey for best sprinter. Last year’s winner of this jersey was Jasper Philipsen.

The first riders to reach the top of the race’s many mountains earn points toward the garish polka-dot jersey for best climber. The top contenders for yellow are also favored to win this jersey, as is Giulio Ciccone of Italy, who won last year.

Are there any Americans racing?

The days of American favorites like LeMond and Lance Armstrong are over for the time being. Moreover, Sepp Kuss, the American who won the 2023 Tour of Spain, is out because of a Covid-19 infection.

Matteo Jorgenson, 24, on the Visma team, is the top-ranked American. He won this year’s weeklong Paris-Nice race, and some think he can contend for the tour’s title in the future, or maybe, if all goes well, this year.

How can I watch?

Stages generally start around 6 or 7 a.m. Eastern time and last four to five hours. In the United States, Peacock will stream every stage live. Some stages will be shown on NBC and USA as well.

Other broadcasters include ITV and Eurosport (United Kingdom), SBS (Australia), FloBikes (Canada), France Televisions (France), ARD (Germany) and J Sports (Japan).
