Main covers across our travel insurance products

Emergency medical expenses, loss of travel documents, missed or delayed departure.

If unforeseen circumstances cause you to miss your departure, we will cover the additional expenses for alternative transportation and accommodation. Similarly, if your departure is delayed for more than 6 hours, we offer benefits after the initial 12-hour delay, with further benefits for each subsequent 12-hour delay.

Not every of our products offers this cover, we recommend you to read the terms and conditions for the travel insurance you are about to purchase. Your policy will specify the maximum payable amount, and covered circumstances will be detailed in the Policy Documen t. Additionally, if you decide to cancel your trip after a 24-hour delay, you may be eligible for compensation up to the specified amount in your policy.

Lost Baggage and Personal Belongings Protection

Travel insurance ensures that lost luggage doesn’t derail your trip. It provides compensation for misplaced items and support in replacing essential belongings. Additionally, the insurance covers the loss of personal documents, offering financial assistance and helping you recover lost time spent tracking down your possessions. Our insurance covers temporary loss or theft of your possessions during your departing journey—excluding valuables—if the delay extends beyond six hours from your arrival destination.

As for the previous benefits, not every of our products includes this benefit. You should read the terms and conditions that apply for the travel insurance you are about to purchase.

Personal Liability Coverage

Travel Insurance Documents

Frequently asked questions, understanding travel insurance, what is travel insurance .

Travel insurance is an insurance you can take on when travelling abroad in order to cover yourself, your family or your belongings in case something goes wrong during your trip.  The number of covers and their limits depend on which travel insurance product you choose: usually insurance companies offer different ranges of product (from the most basic to the most comprehensive).

At Allianz Travel, we offer 3 main products:

  • A basic product: Also called Schengen product , this travel insurance offers the basic coverages required to apply for a schengen visa. It mostly offers coverage for emergency medical expenses
  • The Extra product : this is the mid-range product offering higher limits and more coverages than the Schengen travel insurance above.  On top of the medical emergency coverages, it also provides insurance for your belongings and trip cancellation or curtailment.
  • The Gold product : this is the most comprehensive product offering higher limits than the 2 other products so you can travel with peace of mind.

What does travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance covers emergency medical expenses in most cases. This means if the traveler gets sick or hurt while travelling, the travel insurance will cover the medical expenses if the claim falls under the Terms and Conditions of the policy.

Aside from the emergency medical expenses, travel insurance can also cover your belongings (delays, loss, thief) as well as expenses if you cut your trip short or if you must cancel your trip.

Every travel insurance product offers different coverages and limits - it is critical for you to carefully read what the product covers before purchasing any travel insurance. We also encourage you to read the Terms and Conditions to make sure the product is aligned with your expectations.

Which travel insurance is the best for UAE and international travellers ?

There is no right answer here. It depends on what YOU need and what the travel insurance offers. One travel insurance product might be the perfect fit for one traveler while not matching someone else's needs.

The best advice we can give you is to read what the travel insurance product covers so you do not get bad surprises at claim stage. At Allianz Travel we try our best to clearly state what each of our product offers. If you have any doubt about one of our products, you can also reach out to us directly and we will be more than happy to answer your question.

Allianz offers tailored packages for both UAE and international travellers, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Our cover options include:

  • Single-global trip insurance
  • Annual Multi-trip insurance
  • Inbound UAE travel insurance
  • Schengen travel insurance

What is annual multi-trip travel insurance ?

Annual multi-trip travel insurance covers you for any trips below 90 days  you take throughout an entire year. You buy your travel insurance once and then get covered whenever you travel for the next 365 days.

This product is the best fit for frequent travelers since you do not need to buy a new travel insurance every time you travel. Aside from being convenient, it is also much cheaper if you travel a lot for work or for leisure.

As  for any other travel insurance products, the terms and conditions apply.

Can I buy travel insurance when I am already abroad ?

You need to buy your travel insurance before you start your trip. Once your trip has started you cannot buy travel insurance. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Please note: this is verified when a customer opens a claim - if you purchased your travel insurance after your trip started, your claims will not be eligible.

What Does Allianz Travel insurance cover ?

Allianz Travel offers different travel insurance products. In order to match your expectations, our real-time quotation engine will ask you a few questions to get you the best travel insurance products based on your trip and profile.

For each quotation, we usually offer 2 to 3 products - you can then choose which level of cover you want. Before buying one of our travel insurance products, we recommend you to carefully check the coverages, their limits as well as our terms and conditions . If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us !

What to look for in a travel insurance ?

Most people buy travel insurance to travel with peace of mind knowing they are covered if the unexpected comes up.  Before buying travel insurance, you need to know what type of trip you are going to have to make sure the travel insurance product you pick covers you properly.

For example, if you are going skying in the Alps, you will need to get the Winter Sport add-on on top of your travel insurance so you are sure you will be covered in case you get hurt while snowboarding.

As previously mentioned, it is critical you read the terms and conditions before you take on any travel insurance. If you have a doubt about any coverage, then you can call or whatsapp us .

What insurance do I need when travelling ?

Travel insurance is the ideal type of insurance for travelling abroad.  Depending on the policy you choose it covers a wide range of things such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost baggage, and more. Choose a plan that aligns with your travel needs.

You can get a free quote online   in real-time in a few steps.

Am I covered for skiing or other adventure activities?

Am i covered for loss of cash, does travel insurance cover for everything .

Travel insurance provides a broad range of coverage to protect you during your trip, but it's important to understand that not every activity or situation is covered.

If you have a doubt - please reach out to us  to double check with one of our customer care representatives.

Here’s a more in-depth look at what might not be covered:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions : Many travel insurance policies do not cover pre-existing medical conditions unless you purchase a waiver or additional coverage. It’s crucial to disclose any existing conditions and understand your policy’s terms to ensure you have the necessary protection.
  • Incidents occurring under the influence : Incidents that occur while you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are typically not covered by travel insurance. This includes injuries, accidents, or losses that happen during such times
  • Travel to high-risk areas : Travelling to areas with travel advisories or known risks may not be covered under standard travel insurance policies. It’s important to check the travel advisories for your destination and understand your policy’s coverage limitations.
  • Cancellation for any reason : Standard trip cancellation coverage applies to specific covered reasons. If you want the flexibility to cancel your trip for any reason and still receive reimbursement, you might need to purchase an additional “Cancel For Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage
  • Long-term medical care : Travel insurance is designed for short-term emergencies and might not cover long-term medical care or rehabilitation costs.

Although travelling to the UAE can be an accessible holiday destination for many people, out-the-pocket healthcare costs in the country tend to be expensive, so it's a very good idea to arrive there with travel insurance under your belt.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to the Emirates

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. United Arab Emirates Travel Insurance Requirements

Last updated: 03/07/2024

As of November 7, 2022, the United Arab Emirates lifted all Covid-19 related entry requirements, including the longstanding travel insurance requirement.

Squaremouth’s UAE Travel Insurance Recommendations

Squaremouth recommends travelers visiting UAE buy a travel insurance policy with at least $100,000 in Emergency Medical coverage and at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage. This coverage is reimbursement-based, meaning the traveler is typically required to pay their medical expenses upfront and then file a claim for reimbursement when they return home.

In addition to these medical benefits, most travel insurance policies are comprehensive and include a variety of other benefits, without increasing the cost of a policy. This includes coverage for travel delays and lost or delayed luggage.

Travelers visiting the UAE also have the option to insure their trip costs under the Trip Cancellation benefit. This benefit can reimburse all of their prepaid and non-refundable trip payments if they need to cancel due to an illness or injury, inclement weather, or terrorist incident, among other events.

Safety and Travel Insurance Advice for the UAE

While medical care is exceptional in many areas of the UAE, it can also be expensive. Therefore, it is a good idea to have travel health insurance when you enter the UAE. A UAE travel insurance plan will ensure that you can get the best care available in an emergency without worrying about the costs.

If you are having a medical emergency, the UAE has fantastic medical facilities available. Many of them are accredited by international medical and hospital associations. Since 2008, the country has been working on unifying and stabilizing its health care system.

Travel Insurance Plans for Visitors to the UAE

The UAE has some excellent hospitals and overall great health care. However, services can be costly for visitors who are not insured. We recommend the following UAE travel insurance plans when visiting the country. Both plans cover Covid-19 for travelers to the UAE and other countries.

General Safety Tips and Staying Healthy in the United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates is a relatively safe travel destination. Most incidents arise from either cultural differences or the weather, both of which can be managed with the appropriate knowledge and preparation.

United Arab Emirates Insurance for Visitors

Desert Life

The UAE is a subtropical desert. The country typically experiences very hot summers, with the highest temperatures in July and August, and fairly dry, mild winters. The country rarely receives rainfall making dust storms a hazard, although when rain occurs, flooding can also be an issue.

Heatstroke is one of the most common issues travelers to the UAE experience. Be sure to drink plenty of water. However, you should avoid drinking tap water or beverages containing ice made with tap water, because it may be contaminated with bacteria or other impurities. Bottled water or carbonated beverages in a can will be the safest choice to drink.

Due to the hot climate, tourists are often tempted to wear loose-fitting, casual clothing. Dress codes in the UAE are closely tied with religious views and even the legal system. Men should dress conservatively and show very little skin. Women should follow the same rules to a greater extent, making sure not to show bare shoulders, knees, legs, or arms.

In some areas – although usually not in the touristy parts – women may be required to cover their faces as well. While this may be inconvenient, covering up is also the best way to protect against extreme sun exposure, in addition to wearing sunscreen whenever outdoors.

Vaccines, Necessary Medicines, and Pharmacies When Traveling to the United Arab Emirates

Vaccinations.

Before departing to the UAE, it is important to check that you are current with all routine vaccinations. The CDC recommends that travelers to and expats in the UAE get a booster shot for hepatitis A and typhoid, both of which can be spread through food. The best way to avoid these diseases is to keep away from undercooked food or game meat that typically would not be served in the US.

Some travelers may also want to get a Hepatitis B shot. If you prefer not to, this disease can be prevented by avoiding sexual contact, abstaining from drug use that requires injection, and avoiding piercings or tattoos while abroad. Rabies vaccinations are only recommended if you will be traveling through remote areas or working closely with animals.

There are a variety of international sites to help you stay up to date on any health advice that applies to a safe trip abroad.

MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) is a viral respiratory illness that has occurred in countries throughout the Arabian Peninsula. Its symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. There are no advisories about avoiding travel because of it, but it is smart to take precautions such as washing your hands, avoiding ill individuals, and avoiding consuming raw camel milk (which has been linked to the disease in other countries). People with weakened immune systems, diabetes, kidney disease, or chronic lung failure are considered high risk for MERS. There is currently no vaccination or standardized treatment for the virus. The disease is rare and very close contact is needed for transmission.

United Arab Emirates Insurance for Visitors

Some prescribed medicines from other countries are considered controlled substances in the UAE, and therefore illegal. Check with your local embassy for a list, and see if you need permission from the UAE Ministry of Health prior to your stay in the country in order to bring medications in. Without this permission, you may be subject to prosecution under UAE law.

Most pharmacists in the UAE are expats themselves and it’s a growing industry there. You’ll be able to find pharmacies in most private and public hospitals, and the number is increasing due to the rapid growth in expatriates.

Outside of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, 24-hour pharmacies may be difficult to locate in the UAE. Most are open Saturday-Thursday. Some may be open for limited hours on Friday, but most are closed due to religious activities.

Medical Services in the United Arab Emirates

The healthcare system in the UAE has improved substantially in the last decade. Dubai has recently made it a law that all employers must provide healthcare to their employees free of charge. Consultation and some care are free to nationals and expatriates may receive subsidized medical service and easy access to facilities. However, it is generally recommended that visitors obtain UAE travel insurance to enter the country.

UAE travel insurance is mandated for certain visas. If you don’t need a visa or you can get a visa on arrival, you are not required to have travel insurance. But getting travel insurance for the UAE will cover you if you wind up in a sticky situation like a medical emergency.

Health Insurance in Dubai

All people residing in the UAE, citizens and expats, are required by law to have health insurance. Citizens living in the emirate of Dubai who are not covered by any other insurance have access to the program Saada. The emirate also requires employers to provide health insurance for resident expatriates, but not their dependents. Abu Dhabi covers its citizens through the Thiqa program; employers are required to provide health insurance for resident expatriates and their dependents (one spouse and up to three children).

If you will be working in the country, you will need international health insurance because a UAE travel insurance plan is insufficient. If you are moving to the UAE with your family, you will also need to arrange coverage for your dependents in most instances, the exception being certain dependents in Abu Dhabi. You will also need to arrange protection for other dependents and any domestic workers you will employ. You may also want to arrange for international health insurance if the UAE health insurance your employer provides is not sufficient for your needs.

Visa Options for Traveling or Working in the UAE

Most travelers to and expatriates in the UAE are required to apply for a visa. Even if you are only transiting through the airport, if you will be there longer than 8 hours, you will need a visa. The kind of visa you need will depend on why you are going to the UAE and how long you want to stay there.

If you are changing planes in Dubai or Abu Dhabi and have more than 8 hours between flights, you will need to obtain a transit visa, which can be done through your airline or online. If you are staying longer, people of many nationalities can receive a tourist visa on arrival at the immigration counter at Dubai International Airport or Abu Dhabi International Airport. This will be valid for 30 days and can be extended for an additional 30 days for a fee.

If you are hoping to work in the United Arab Emirates you will need the sponsorship of the company that is hiring you or a resident of the UAE. The visa process will likely be managed by the company, but you will have to provide the necessary paperwork and take a blood test. It is important to note that the UAE will detain and deport any non-citizen who tests positive for HIV, and may also do so for people testing positive for tuberculosis or hepatitis.

Citizens from GCC nations - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia - do not need a visa to travel to and work in the UAE. Be sure to cancel your work visa upon leaving the country to avoid complications.

Stay Safe - Follow the Local Law and Customs in the United Arab Emirates

The UAE legal system is based on a civil law system much like the U.S., although it does have some elements of Sharia law that can be confusing for tourists. The word Sharia comes from Arabic and is roughly translated to morals. Many of these laws relate to legal punishments for issues involving sexuality, hygiene, religion, etc. It is often associated with the religion of Islam but has other uses within the Arab world as well.

Some of the legal issues travelers to the UAE should be aware of specifically involve physical affection between individuals as well as drug and alcohol use. Kissing in public is illegal, and foreigners are deported on a regular basis for violating this law. Additionally, premarital sex is a grievous violation as is homosexuality, both of which have led to the prosecution of foreigners in recent years. Underage drinking, public drunkenness, and any form of drug use are also criminal offenses that can be prosecuted. Foreigners are subject to these laws and can face lengthy prison sentences or worse for violations.

While most of the population in the United Arab Emirates identifies as Muslim, the government has adopted a strict non-discrimination policy between religions. Proselytizing is forbidden, as is criticizing or preventing the practice of any religion. That said, during the month of Ramadan, it is illegal for both Muslims and non-Muslims to eat or drink in public during daylight hours.

The UAE has one of the most disproportionate gender ratios in the world, with three men per woman . This gender ratio is mostly driven by foreign male laborers, particularly in construction. As a result, single females are often targeted by men. That is not to say women are the only targets. A number of male tourists have reported rape and sexual assault—by women and other men—in the UAE. Unfortunately, because sex outside of marriage is illegal, people who report they have been raped are often arrested and imprisoned for months . While the country has grown to economic prosperity for its protection of tourists and foreigners, it is also widely criticized for perceived human rights violations and failure to prosecute crimes against foreigners.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

  • Share full article

Trucks under water with a bridge in the background.

By Raymond Zhong

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Omnia Al Desoukie contributed reporting.
