Bike Tour: Amsterdam – Bruges - 8 days

A supreme cycling tour from the Netherlands down into Belgium, gliding past historic towns, villages and canals – all on high-quality bike paths! Riding from Amsterdam to Bruges, you'll find those delightful places you would otherwise never chance upon.

Take off from Amsterdam in a south-westerly direction. Fill your photo album with portraits of the most picturesque towns in the Netherlands and Flanders: Gouda, Dordrecht, Willemstad, Zierikzee, Middelburg, Vlissingen (Flushing), Sluis, Damme and ultimately Bruges. All remarkably well-preserved gems, evocative of centuries past. And on a more natural note: this predominantly rural cycling tour takes in a number of nature reserves.

This is a linear tour!  Also available with Bruges as the starting point .  Generally speaking, there is more chance of tailwind if you start the trip in Bruges (although obviously, we can not control the weather!) Want to see more of Belgium? Ask about the possibilities for extra cycling days to Ghent and Antwerp or visit the site of our other label Belgian Biketours .

Please be aware that it is not always possible to start/ finish with a bike rental in every location, our bike supplier cannot deliver the bikes everywhere. When you want to rent our bikes, please check with us which starting/ending location in Belgian is suitable.

Your cycling holiday begins in Amsterdam, with its gorgeous 400-year-old canal district; a myriad of museums such as the new Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank; street artists and performers on Dam, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein; and the renowned red-light district. The city brims with things to see and do and you couldn’t hope for a more dynamic way to start your trip. Arrange for an early arrival to allow time for the elegant tree-lined canals, tall narrow townhouses and 17th-century canal ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From bustling Amsterdam, plunge into the peace and quiet of the Groene Hartâ or Green Heart, a pleasant rural area of low-lying polders, peat meadows and grazing cattle. A flat, open landscape where church spires and windmills touch the horizon and clouds are reflected in lakes and canals. For centuries, people have flocked to markets in Gouda, coming from far and wide to buy horses, cows, meat, turf, seed, cheese, etc. Take an evening stroll around the Old Town, soak up the yesteryear atmosphere and marvel at the attractive market square, 15th-century town hall and Weighing House or Waag.

From Gouda, cycle via the 'Green Heart of Holland' to Kinderdijk, where 19 windmills have majestically stood the test of time since 1740. These mills were formerly used to drain excess water out of the low-lying polder and pump it up to the River Lek, and one of them is open to the public. Your destination Papendrecht is just a ferry crossing away from Dordrecht, one of Holland’s oldest towns, surrounded entirely by rivers. Beautiful bridges take you across into the heart of town, where monumental buildings line the harbour.

A short 3km stretch leads to your hotel in Papendrecht, situated on the north bank of the river just outside Dordrecht town centre.

The result of a major 1421 flood, Biesbosch is one of Europe’s few wetland habitats where the ecosystem has adapted to both salt water, coming in from the sea through tidal creeks, and fresh water, flowing down through the rivers. This ever-changing labyrinth of creeks and rivulets encompasses countless little islands of willows and reeds, a paradise for birds. Ride along at the edge of the National Park, then round off your day in Willemstad, a fortified town in the shape of a seven-pointed star.

Please note: Biesbosch Park can only be cycled on days the ferry runs. There is an alternate route for days with no ferry departure.

Today you enter Zeeland, a province marked by light, wind, water and lots of space. Criss-cross this region made up of islands, taking bridges and ferries as you drift down toward Belgium. Storybook towns with ancient houses and cobbled streets await in the coming days, as you traverse a patchwork landscape of vast polders, idyllic countryside, rolling dunes and golden sand flats.

Delight in a wander down the narrow lanes of Zierikzee. Quaint little houses take you back in time, recalling the glory days when ships set sail with salt, wool, fish, grain and red dye, as far afield as the Baltic and Mediterranean. Your route continues in charming Veere, a distributor of Scottish wool way back in 1541. For 300 years, such commerce brought prosperity to the town, along with a lively expat community. Walk in their footsteps, as you tour the local sights. Cruising further south you discover the nostalgic splendour of Middelburg, capital of Zeeland and one of the Netherlands’ most important trading centres in the 16th and 17th centuries.

After a hearty breakfast, cycle onward to Vlissingen then hop on a ferry to Zeelandic Flanders with its winding country roads, pollard willows, moist meadows and scattered villages. Cutting across the border into Belgium, you will reach charming little Damme, on the banks of the romantic Damse Vaart. From here, it’s only a short stretch to Bruges, known as the pearl of Flanders! This truly enchanting destination has been welcoming tourists for some 150 years. With most of its medieval architecture intact, the exceptionally well-preserved town centre exudes a sense of times gone by when it was at the heart of the European wool and fabric trade.

After breakfast your cycling holiday has come to an end.

Starting dates: Daily from April 1 till September 23.

Please note: a minimum stay of 2 nights in a row is required in the hotel in Amsterdam on the following dates (and a higher price will be charged): March 29th, 30th and 31st 2024 April 20th 2024 April 26th and 27th 2024 May 9, 10th and 11th 2024 May 17th, 18th and 19th 2024

Starting point: Amsterdam

Please note: a minimum stay of 2 nights in a row is required in the hotel in Amsterdam on the following dates (and a higher price will be charged): April 20th 2024 April 26th and 27th 2024 May 9, 10th and 11th 2024 May 17th, 18th and 19th 2024

The hotels and the B&B on this trip have been carefully selected for their location, atmosphere and/or unique services. All rooms are en-suite. A list of the accomodation we work with appears below. If a certain accomodation is unable to confirm due to lack of availability, we will try to request a comparable alternative if possible.

When selecting the accomodation, we try to take into account as much as possible a safe and closed bicycle shed. However, we cannot do this with all of them guarantee and this partly depends on the number of bicycles of other guests.

On this trip you can choose from Category A and Category B. Hotels in Category B are more economical, sometimes located further from the centre and may have fewer stars.

If you don’t bring your own bike, you can rent one from us. Our touring bikes are 24-speed gear. You can find all the information regarding our rental bikes below.

You will find your rental bike waiting for you at your first hotel. The hotel reception staff will give you the keys for your bikes and direct you to the bicycle shed. All bikes are provided with chain locks.

Why the Dutch don't wear helmets!

Instruction video hybrid bike and e-bike

Hybrid bike

Our hybrid bikes have 24-gears with hand brakes.  The hybrid bikes are circa 16,5 KG.

Rental bike

The e-bikes have a small electric engine and battery, which can be charged at the hotels. You still have to pedal: it just makes pedaling much easier. Some experience with e-bikes is recommended, as the bikes accelerate faster and are heavier than regular bikes because of the electric engine. The weight of the e-bike is ca. 25 KG. We recommend a minimum height of 160 cm for the e-bike.

E-bike

Child bikes

For children who are at least 120 cm, we can also arrange bikes (these are 24”or 26” for children that are bigger than 140 cm).  The child bikes come with at least 7-gears and hand brakes.  The maximum body height for a child’s bike is 155 cm.

24" child bike:

Accessories

All our rental bikes come with a bell.

All our adult bikes come with hand brakes.

For children up to 30 months old (max. 15 KG) it is possible to rent a front child seat. This is not possible with e-bikes, due to the display.

For children older than 30 months (max. 22KG) it is possible to rent a rear child seat. This is also possible with e-bikes.

Both front- and rear child seats are €5,- per day.

Helmets are not mandatory in the Netherlands, but can be rented for €10,- per piece. Available sizes: Adult: 54-61 cm, Child: 50-55 cm (only available for children over 5 years).

All our bikes come with both front- and rear lights. You need to push the button on the lamp and it will flash three times. This means that the lights will automatically start working when it gets dark.

When you push again, the lamp will flash one time and the lights will be turned off.

Our bikes come with a defender lock with plug in chain (cable lock that is attached to the regular lock, see picture).

You need to turn the key a bit, take out the pin from the cable lock and attach it to a pole/other bike/fence etc.

When you push the pin back into the regular lock, you need to lock the regular lock as you always do, and both locks will be secured.

1 pannier is included at the 'standard' bikes and the e-bikes.

Height: 42 cm Depth front to the side: 17 cm Wide top: 32 cm Wide down: 23 cm Volume: 20 liters It has an easy click-on/click-off system. The panniers are water resistant, so everything will stay dry.

The rental bikes come with regular pedals, so no click-in/SPD pedals.

All our bikes come with a quick release system, which makes it very easy to adjust the height of the saddle and the handle bars.

There is one small puncture kit included, which can be found in the pannier. In case a rental bike has another problem, we always advise you to go to a bike repair shop or call the bike breakdown emergency number which is provided in the travel documents when you book this extra service.

Saddles can be adjusted in height without using any tools, see ‘Quick Release’. Our saddles don’t come with a gel cover.

Dutch Biketours does not provide water bottles. We can also not guarantee that there are bottle holders on the bikes. You will always receive 1x pannier, so you can always store your water bottle in your pannier.

Tandem bike

Adult-child tandem

We have limited family tandem bikes available on request. The family tandems have 7-gears and can be used for one adult and one child with a minimum body height of 125 cm.

Tag-along bike

A tag-along bike is a good option for children between approx. 100 cm and 125 cm, as they can pedal themselves and on their own pace but don’t have to worry about other traffic.

Child trailer

Child trailers can be rented for a maximum of two children who are up to 100 cm (max. 35 KG in total). We mostly use the XLC Duo 2 child trailer. Child trailers are not possible in combination with e-bikes.

Bike Breakdown Pass

Mile after wonderful mile of untroubled cycling is what we would wish our clients. However there is a minimal chance of breakdown along the way. If this thought is a nagging worry to you, a Bicycle Breakdown Assistance insurance policy may ease your mind. If you buy this insurance from our partner ANWB pechhulp in advance, their service is as follows. The costs are €4,- per bicycle per day. If your bike breaks down by the roadside an ANWB bicycle repair man will drive to you in his repair van and fix your bike so you can continue your tour. You won’t have to pay him repair costs. If you are cycling on your own bicycle you will be charged for any new spare parts your bike may require. If you are renting a bicycle through Dutch Bike Tours any new parts are at our expense. If it turns out the bicycle cannot be repaired on the spot, or if you can't continue cycling, the repairman can drop you off somewhere in his van. One companion plus bikes may join you in the van.

Bike Theft Insurance

Do you wish to insure your bike against theft? The cost is € 3,- per day per standard hybrid bicycle. For an electric bicycle, premium bike or racing bike: € 6,00 per day per bicycle. Please see the General Terms and Conditions for Bicycle Hire and Insurance.

If a rental bike gets stolen or damaged, we will hold the client responsible. If your insurance does not cover this event, you will have to pay the costs yourself.

This trip ends in a different place from where one begins. For that reason we offer a car transport service for those travelling to the Netherlands by car. Your own car will be driven by a driver from the start location to the end location of the trip. This way, at the end of the trip, you can immediately drive home without having to go back to the starting location by public transport to pick up the car.

We offer this car transport service in collaboration with our partner Easy Way. This service can be selected in the booking form.

The car will be delivered to the end location one day before you check out from the last hotel, between 08:00 and 16:00. If you prefer to receive the car on a different date, please mention this at the time of booking. The following conditions apply to this service: - You have to leave your car keys at the hotel reception where the journey begins. Any parking charges of the hotel must already be paid at the reception, so that the driver does not have to pay these costs. - The car must have a full tank. - The car must be at least third party insured. - Easy Way is not liable for damage, except for any clearly demonstrable direct damage, but with a maximum of € 10,000 per event. Easy Way is not liable for indirect damage. - Dutch Biketours and the relevant hotels are not responsible for damage. - We need to know the brand/model of car and the license plate. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number, also known as chassis number) of the car and the country of issue of the license place are also required if the car does not have a Dutch license plate.

If you choose the car transport service, you automatically agree to the above conditions.

If you do not have the vehicle data at hand at the time of booking, you can also pass this on to us at a later date.

Excellent experience and arrangements went very smoothly. Bikes were good and we enjoyed the route chosen especially through the Green Heart during the first 2 days. Interesting route over bridges and ferries and through beautiful countryside and historic towns

Loved the amazing expanse of cycleways throughout the bike tour .We would never cycle without a helmet at home but felt confident to do so due to the cycle paths being so safe. Didn’t get lost once thanks to the cycle app!

Nice views, ferry connections, bike delivery & pick up were easy. Hotel in Amsterdam was easy to use with the city bus. Every hotel offered great breakfast. Gr8, Harbor Hotel (Leonardo?) and Hotel Postillion were just too far from the small villages that we rode through and preferred to have time to visist. Willemstad hotel and Mondragon hotels offered great food, accommodation and above all else excellent locations!

The ride was very tiring for me as I am 75. It was, however, very enjoyable and rewarding. I always felt safe on the quiet country lanes and was very appreciative of the respect shown to cyclists by other vehicular traffic. It was so interesting to see the villages and historic towns along the way.

Beautiful scenery, lovely towns and places to visit, good balance was water front and in-land fields along the way, excellent bike paths in our route in Netherlands and Belgium, and very nice people.

What a beautiful trip. The organization was excellent as was the baggage transfer service. We really enojyed each town we had a layover in and the route instructions were great. Can't wait to book another trip in the future

We were a group of 6 from the US. We loved traveling through the rural farmland and biking through small villages and old cities. The few museums we visited were very interesting and informative about Dutch culture. We hit a bit of rain and wind but had very high spirits in spite of the weather - which we can't predict! We definitely want to come back and tour with some framily members who could not make this trip. We really appreciate DBT always responding promptly to our questions and assistance both prior to and during our trip. Great staff. Thank you all for organizing this trip for us!

This was the second time we did a trip with Dutch Bike Tours and it has been just as fun and enjoyable this time. The routes are so well explained and cycling in the Netherlands is so easy and beautiful. We were almost always near water and there is so much wildlife to see. The hotels were in good locations and very comfortable. We’re already planning a third trip!

A brilliant experience; who knew that there were so many perfect traffic free cycling routes!

We loved getting a chance to see Holland from a bike - you go through towns and see countryside that you'd never see otherwise. The route guides give you great flexibility for your day and the luggage transport service was fantastic! All of the fun and none of the logistics.

...We had a best holiday on the road of Holland. Bicycles was nearly new and everything fixed and equipped. Instructions are very clear and helpful. Hotels in good location with nice diners and breakfast. Luggage was delivered in time. Even weather was beautiful, except our last day (typhoon in Belgium)...

...I was very satisfied overall with the trip. I was very happy overall and would be likely to do another bike trip in the future...

...It was so smooth and well organised with the bags arriving at each hotel everyday and no trouble with any of the five bikes we hired for the trip, and would add that I wouldn't do a trip like this without hiring the GPS unit which had all the routes and hotels loaded. Brilliant holiday and a great way to see your country...

...As we expected, the bike tour itself was very nice, visiting many nice cities and going trough lovely scenery.  We very much enjoyed the bike trip...

...Probably lack of research on our side but did not realize that the general wind direction is from the SW and is usually quite strong. We did not have good luck with the weather which is just bad luck but knowing about the general windiness of Holland and usual wind direction would have had us considering taking the trip in the opposite direction. All accommodations were comfortable and friendly. This was our first bicycle tour and despite the weather we really enjoyed the experience and would like to do it again! Thank you so much for all your help and hope to book with you in the not to distant future. (Just not into the wind and rain everyday.) Holland is both beautiful, friendly and fun...

...I loved being in the country the most. Crossing the long bridges and dykes was so much fun. The Groen Hardt was wonderful...

...We have a wonderful time and your service was great, the breakfasts and hotels were wonderful...

...Our trip was such a great experience, we were able to see the country of the Netherlands at such a wonderful pace. It is superior to driving as you get to see such beautiful sites along the way. The tour was well organised and we were able to find our way easily from stay to stay. My Dutch family felt that they too would like to take such a tour through their own country as they followed the blog of our trip. I would recommend this tour to everyone, it really was fantastic...

...We loved every minute of our trip especially crossing that long 5 klm. bridge and the ferries, the ocean view and canals....thank you for a great trip...

...Very beautiful bike ride, amazing landcapes with lot of water. In Netherlands, everything is made for bikes. People are very nice, always ready to help, inform...

...Everyday we had different scenery. One day was better then the next...there was a lot of variety....beautiful cities, fields, canals, unique bridges to cross and ferries...

...A family bike tour is an experience like no other. Riding from Amsterdam to Bruges allowed us time to explore, reflect and laugh. By the end of the tour our 10 year old was able to lead, knowing how to read and identify the signs and we spent a lot of time riding in a group chatting as we ambled along fields and canals. Night time was a chance to explore some beautiful old towns and local delicacies...

...We have recently returned from our holiday and would like thank you, we had a fantastic time.  Our bags were transported efficiently, always delivered to the hotels prior to our arrival. We liked the other hotels selected, particularly the Bellevue in Dordrecht due to the fabulous river view. The GPS was essential for us and the directions taking us to the hotels each day much appreciated. The routes you had chosen took us through varied, beautiful scenery, we loved catching the ferries...

...Very sad to give up our bikes , we had a wonderful time . The way it was organised was faultless...

...We’re back after a wonderful trip. Thank you so much for setting up the bike ride. The Netherlands are so perfect for biking and the scenery, food, and the people were fantastic. The arrangements you made were just great. We’re back in the desert now and looking at the pictures we took and remembering what a beautiful time we had...

...Thank you for a wonderful holiday!...

...We love the country, the people are warm and helpful, And the route is fantastic. In our case we thought we should have started in Brugge and cycled to Amsterdam as we would have had the wind at our back in a couple of the days. Fabulous week !...

...I cycled as a solo female traveller from Amsterdam to Brugges in late August 2018. Dutch Bike Tours exceeded my expectations from beginning to end in terms of responsiveness, dependability, professionalism, service orientation, quality of hotel accommodations and meals (I took the half board), and the sheer beauty of the bike trails and sights or places of interest along the way. I highly recommend the GPS, which allowed me to fully enjoy the scenery rather than keep my eyes focused on paper maps, and the bike breakdown pass which I used once and was extremely well served by. I will definitely cycle with Dutch Bike Tours again and highly recommend the company. Don't hesitate to book your cycling trip with DBT and enjoy the good life by bike!!...

...Without a doubt the BEST week ever on a bike!...

...Beautiful scenery particularly during the first three days and into Bruges. Depending on the time of year Bruges to Amsterdam may have the wind at your back...

...It was wonderful trip through the netherlands countryside and old charming towns. I love that we could explore and bike at our own pace (also far cheaper than the guided tours). It was nice that all hotels seemed happy to see you (used to dealing with bikes, luggage, etc). DBT was always quick to respond to any issues/questions that i had before and during the trip. Hope to do another trip again in the future...

...We had a wonderful time. Route was excellent, hotels good and backup queries from Dutch bike staff timely and helpful. We became quite saddle sore with the Dutch bikes. Would prefer a more traditional bike next time...

...Perfect bicycle holiday. Every day had its charm - and surprise! Holland is a wonderful country for bicycles! Always save some time to also walk the streets! Even the smallest places will surprise you!...

...Great seeing the countryside & experience biking in the Netherlands & Belgium...

...We had a few questions about one of the bikes when we arrived, but received excellent support when we called in to your office (the front bag needed to be switched out). We chose to add the extra night in Woerden, and would recommend this for most riders vs. Amsterdam - Gouda all on day one. We will certainly recommend your company to others. Thank you...

...All hotels were perfect. The route from Papendrecht to Willemstad was beautiful. Great holiday. Everything was super...

...GPS was invaluable.Twice we experienced road closures due to road works and the GPS enabled us to re-route effectively. All hotels were of good quality. We would have liked some information about public toilets in Holland. We did not find public toilets on this trip...

...the accommodation and dinners included in the halfboard were fantastic...

...Thank you for routing through Kinderdijk. It was definitely a highlight...

...Travel through nice towns, picking your own places to stop and get a beverage or some food was very nice. We stopped at a small place in Sirjans and meet a very nice couple who owned the place. Roads good and very impressed with the bicycle paths in Netherlands. Quite a 'highway' system and wished we had something similar in the USA...

...Everything was well organized! The staff at all the hotels were helpful & friendly...

...My husband and I are back in New York following our cycling adventure fom Amsterdam to Bruges and I just wanted to thank you for a fabulous trip! Everything was well-organized and the bicycles and equipment were top quality. Your country is beautiful and the Dutch people that we met along the way were lovely - always friendly and helpful.  We're already talking about our next Dutch Bike Tours trip!...

...The accommodations were good, the routes were well planned. All in all it was very organized...

...We had a great experience! We have already referred friends who have heard of our time biking in The Netherlands. We enjoyed the comfort of the Dutch bikes...

...This was our first cycling trip in Holland so the whole experience was new and interesting. We loved the dedicated bike routes and pretty countryside despite the continual rain and cold weather! We were very pleased with the bikes and found them comfortable and easy to ride...

...Now we are going back home and missing already the incredible daily cycling days we had. We just loved it all, the routes, the bikes, the places, organization, maps, tips and all locations we stayed. We thank you very much for such incredible experience you provided to us...

...We had a great time, and particularly enjoyed the routes chosen and the quality of the bikes...

Equipment very good condition. Accommodation generally very good except second last night (bathroom in cupboard and limited opportunity to visit to town in evening). Meals all excellent with third last evening the BEST (excellent presentation, meal and detail of services) Experience was excellent and would recommend your Company to anyone wanting to bike tour in Europe and would use your company again - service was excellent .

...The hotels were anywhere from good to outstanding.  Even the less expensive hotels had their attractions (e.g., the hotel in Vlissingen had a wonderful dining room and a swimming pool.) All the hotels varied a great deal and we enjoyed staying in each one. Well done....

...We loved the GPS which was indispensable for the trip! We loved the hotels but thought the hotel in Dordrecht was too far from the city center. We appreciate that our luggage was always delivered on time and was often early. Thanks for a fun adventure!...

...“we finished our cycling tour and we are  really enthusiastic about the experience. Hotels were excellent; the one in  Schuddebeurs was an old country inn surrounded by nature in this little village on the path; in Willemstad we were right on the marina. Even the dinners were excellent. In addition, the landscape has helped a lot, the Netherlands is extremely nice bike, we have come almost exclusively bike paths and we loved every single ride. Amsterdam is interesting and Bruges is very beautiful .. I would leave immediately again , of course! Thanks for everything, Francesca, also have read with patience this my email. Keep it up, because it still travel by bicycle is still the best way to travel!....

....We have had a fantastic time cycling from Amsterdam to Bruges. lovely route, great Accomodation and reliable bikes. the GPS was extremely useful especially to find the hotels. this is our 3rd successive trip with your company and we have never been disappointed....

....We had a very enjoyable time in Holland. Unfortunately, we chose a week when the weather was very poor. 4 of the 6 days were wet and windy. The hotels you have chosen were mostly satisfactory. The GPS worked well and the routes you chose were excellent. The cycle paths in Holland are superb. The Dutch people we met were all friendly and helpful and their spoken English is excellent. We would definitely consider another holiday with you, even a repeat of this one done in the opposite direction and in nicer weather....

....Overall, we enjoyed our trip very much. The bikes were of excellent quality, and the routes took us through scenic and interesting landscapes. People whom we met were friendly and helpful. We hope to take another trip in the near future....

....We have enjoyed the ride and our trip was well organized....

....We zijn aangenaam verrast door de grote landschap in België en Nederland....

....Overall we really enjoyed the trip and so I do not want to give any bad impressions. For example, the accommodations were terrific as were the meals. The routes chosen were excellent and gave us a chance to see a variety of things. We also met many nice people on the trip which was a real benefit as well....

....I would just like to say that we had a great time and would definitely recommend and use Dutch Bike Tours again for cycling in Holland. Virtually all the accommodations were of acceptable quality although there was some variation in standards amongst all the venues with some being newer, larger and more convenient than others. The general route was enjoyable and gave us a good appreciation of the regional difference through this part of the country....

...We had a very enjoyable trip in your beautiful country. The innkeepers were all welcoming and helpful with the bikes, and the bikes performed very well. There was one particularly challenging day when the wind was over 40 mph - it seemed like we rode three times the distance....

...Thank you for a wonderful trip.  All of the hotels met our expectations.  The bikes all fit and worked out well.  Your handbook of materials was complete and superb...

We successfully finished our ride yesterday after a wonderful six days.  We have many happy memories and are excited to share our stories and pictures with our friends back home in Canada

...I wish it hadn’t rained so hard on the Wednesday but that is always the risk you take with an outdoor activity like cycling. I found the routes easy to follow but did get lost briefly a couple of times (once when the path was being repaired and was blocked and the other when I missed the turn). The hotels were great and the food was of high quality. I will recommend the experience to other riders. The only suggestion I have is that it would be good to have a shorter option for each of the sectors, if possible, when the weather in a sector was really bad. Not sure how practical that would be. Again, thanks very much...

Day 1: Individual arrival in Bruges

Bruges, also known as Venice of the North , is the most important art and museum city in Belgium. Explore the rich history of perhaps the most beautiful city in Flanders and take a canal cruise through the medieval old town. It dates back to the time when Bruges was a center of European trade. Booked rental bikes are available at the hotel.

Day 2: Bruges – Vlissingen / Middelburg, approx. 65 km + ferry trip

Your bike tour begins with a varied stage through green grassland and wide wet meadows. First you cycle to the small, charming town of Damme. A short time later, you cross the border into the Netherlands. You cycle through Zeelandic Flanders before a ferry (not included) finally takes you to your destination of Vlissingen. The sunset looks particularly beautiful on the beach.

Day 3: Vlissingen – Schuddebeurs / Zierikezee, approx. 50 km

In Middelburg, you have reached the capital of the province of Zeeland. Take a look at the Stadhuis, one of the most important Gothic town halls in the Netherlands. The municipality of Veere was heavily influenced by trade with Scotland. Follow in the footsteps of the Scottish community as you stroll through this charming little town. Finally, you cycle via Zierikzee to Schuddebeurs.

Day 4: Schuddebeurs – Willemstad, approx. 55 km

Beautiful sandy beaches line the Island of Schouwen-Duiveland. You cross the mosaic-like landscape of polders, dunes and sandbanks before cycling back to the mainland. The town center of the small fortified town of Willemstad is home to numerous well-restored buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The town center forms a seven-pointed star that is surrounded by water all around.

Day 5: Willemstad – Dordrecht, approx. 60 km

Just a stone's throw from Willemstad, you cross the Hollands Diep and soon reach De Biesbosch National Park. This natural paradise is characterized by small rivers and streams and is one of the few freshwater tidal areas in the world. Hundreds of bird species breed in the labyrinth of streams and islands. After enjoying pure nature, you cycle to the lively city of Dordrecht. More than 1,000 monuments give one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands a very special charm.

Grote kerk, Dordrecht

Day 6: Dordrecht – Gouda, approx. 45 km

On today's stage of your bike tour from Bruges to Amsterdam, make a stopover at the most famous windmills in the Netherlands. A total of 19 of them stand side by side near Kinderdijk. They were built in the 18th century and were once used to pump water from the surrounding polders. The route continues to Gouda. The town is not only famous for the cheese of the same name, but also for Stroopwafels , which were invented here. The round pastry waffles with a caramel filling make an excellent souvenir.

Gouda, Town Hall

Electric Bike

An electric bike is available on request. A supplement applies, see below. Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are designed to make cycling easier. The pedaling ‘boost’ provided by an e-bike opens up more options, allowing people of different fitness levels to cycle together or to allow less confident or fit cyclists to take on routes they may otherwise consider too tough for their current capabilities.

introductory

INTRODUCTORY - GRADE 1 The cycling is introductory (1) grade with daily cycling distances from 11 to 57km (6 to 36mi). As with all of our cycling programs, wind and poor weather could make the trip grade change. Should you not wish to cycle there are walking options available. The accent is on keeping a relaxed pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos, visit a museum or enjoy the market places in many of the interesting towns visited. It is considered suitable for children, as long as they have road sense, are familiar with the workings of a bike (gear change etc) and are comfortable cycling alongside moving vehicles at times. *For safety reasons, we highly recommend that cycle helmets be worn during cycle sections.

8 Days, 7 Nights

Grade 1 (Very Easy)

A linear cycling holiday featuring accommodation on board the brand new premium Dutch barge, MS Magnifique III, packed full of classic city and countryside treasures including Bruges, Ghent, Dendermonde, Antwerp, historic Dordrecht, Kinderdijk’s row of time-honoured windmills and cosmopolitan canal city, Amsterdam. When it comes to experiencing the jewels of Holland and Flanders from a different perspective, nothing beats the combination of pedalling the polderland paths and taking in the lowland views from on board your luxurious floating home.

Due to navigation conditions, the exact details of itineraries/embarkation points may be modified at the discretion of the boat’s Captain. All overnights are on board your floating accommodation, the MS Magnifique III. Details of the transits to the next destination are outlined in the itinerary below but may be subject to change.

Day 1 All aboard in Bruges!

Join the MS Magnifique III moored in central Bruges and settle in to your floating accommodation on board this classic premium Dutch barge in the early afternoon, before heading out to explore the extensive sights of beautiful Bruges, the ‘Pearl of Flanders’, the ‘Venice of the North’ and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Graze the fine art offerings at the Groenigemuseum or climb the 83m tower of the famous belfry, the ‘Belfort’, to drink in the views. There’s time to shop for lace, fine chocolate or even take in the ‘Choco Story’ museum or ‘Frietmuseum’ (yes, a whole museum dedicated to chips!). To help you get the most out of your afternoon and evening in this enchanting city, there is a guided visit included in the tour price. You are free to take supper at your leisure in Bruges.

Overnight mooring – Bruges

Day 2 Eastward ho! En route to glorious Ghent

Your floating accommodation heads out early along the canals of Bruges to stop off outside the city. Here’s where you saddle up and your first gentle cycling adventure begins, as you pedal away across the flat West Flanders terrain towards the historic university city of Ghent. Although more modest than Bruges, Ghent is a vibrant place which combines wonderful flourishes of medieval architecture with refreshing contemporary culture and even has Roman roots. Climb up the ‘Gravensteen’ – the 12th century ‘Castle of the Count’ built by Phillip of Alsace – for great city and River Leie from its round towers and battlements. There’s plenty of time to explore the wonders of city centre including the impressive façades of the ‘Graslei’ area and the fine works by Van Eyck in St Bavo’s Cathedral before you meet back up for dinner with the MS Magnifique III at Merelbeke lock in the city suburbs.

Overnight mooring – Ghent (Merelbeke)

Miles  28   Kms   45

Day 3 Going with the flow to Dendermonde

The tidal River Schelde sets the pace today, with the barge’s progress governed by the river’s ebb and flow, so you may cycle off to meet MS Magnifique III in your main destination of the day – historic down of Dendermonde – or need to pedal just a few extra kilometres to catch up with the vessel in St Amands. The stretch of the Schelde downstream from Ghent makes for some super scenic cycling, so it’s a pleasure to just go with the flow and where it meets the River Dender, there are more beautiful treasures in store. Fill your panniers from the little shops here or just relax in a market place café and enjoy history’s patchwork of gabled architecture from the town hall to the belfry and the famous ‘Vleeshuis’.

Overnight mooring – St Amands.

Miles   24 – 32   Kms  40 – 53

Day 4 Onwards to Antwerp

More scenic cycling along the Schelde today as you head out via the old shipbuilding town of Temse to the impressive harbours and historic heartlands of  the ‘City of Diamonds’ itself, Antwerp. Meet back up with MS Magnifique III in the centre and enjoy an afternoon and evening exploring the city with supper in town at your leisure. The capital of the province of Flanders is Rubens’ birthplace, so don’t miss the paintings by this local Grand Master in the gothic ‘Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal’ built in 1351. There are more works by Rubens as well as Van Dyck and Brueghel the Younger at the Rockoxhuis, and the Platin-Moretus Museum is a must too, featuring the world’s oldest printing press. On top of all this, there are the medieval guildhouses around the marketplace, the charming cobbled streets and glittering prizes of the Diamond Quarter to discover too.

Overnight mooring – Antwerp.

Miles   25   Kms   42

Day 5 More secrets to unlock

Another day to go with the flow, with the Skipper of the MS Magnifique III deciding on the cycling stretches of the day, according to the dictates of the waterways for today it is time to wonder at the amazing engineering behind the canals and flatlands of Flanders and Holland. For starters, the MS Magnifique III cruises along the Schelde-Rhine Canal to negotiate the mighty Kreekrak lock complex en route to the former fishing village of Tholen in the province of Zeeland.  From here, there’s a cycling stretch along the impressive Volkerak locks to Willemstad in North Brabant, a fascinating town enclosed in a star-shaped layout of Napoleonic-style fortifications. Look out for the Mauritshuis, once the hunting lodge of Maurits of Orange; the ‘d’Orangemolen’ a charming windmill by the marina and the round Koepelkerk, as well as the old arsenal and gunpowder stores. Dordrecht is the final destination of the day – to be reached perhaps by bike or by barge from Willemstad. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and known as the ‘Island on the Dort’, it is bordered by no less than five rivers and is a great place for the night’s mooring.

Day 6 Well, blow me down!

It wouldn’t do to think that if you’ve seen one windmill, you’ve seen them all…nothing can prepare you for the Kinderdijk, the designated UNESCO World Heritage Site where there are nineteen of them in a row! MS Magnifique III will deliver you right into this amazing windmill country, so you can disembark and visit one of these mighty mills which have been pumping out the water from the low Ablasserwaaard polder since the 18th century. Saddle up next and pedal off to Schoonhaven with its majestic medieval town hall, city walls and rows of narrow gabled houses lining the waterside. A super-wealthy place to be in the 17th century, home to skilled silversmiths and clockmakers, it’s still known locally as ‘Silver City’ today. Don’t miss the impressive town clock or the glittering prizes in the museum dedicated to the Dutch silvertrade before pedalling on to Vianen, an attractive small town on the River Lek with fortifications and a 15th century brick gateway.

Overnight mooring – Vianen

Miles   30   Kms   50

Day 7 From country mansions to the canals of Amsterdam

From Vianen, the day starts with a cruise to Breukelen in the province of Utrecht, where you pedal off along the little River Vecht through an area renowned for fine country mansions and castles with extensive gardens and parkland, built by wealthy 17th century merchant families from Amsterdam. Get a taste for the small villages, like Nieuwersluis, Loenen and Vreeland or the local cheese museum perhaps at Nigtvecht. Your final cycling stretch into Amsterdam to meet MS Magnifique III in the harbour, takes in the charming towns of Abcoude and Ouderkerk on the River Amstel. Finally enjoy some time in the lively city of Amsterdam itself, choosing from galleries and museum, great shopping opportunities, time taking in the atmosphere along the canals and cobbled streets.

Overnight mooring – Amsterdam.

The Venice of the North delights with its old town and canals. Situated in the middle of the beautiful Flanders countryside, Bruges is the most attractive city in the region. The city centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

From Bruges you start your cycling tour through the beautiful landscape of West Flanders. At Knokke-Heist you reach the coast, which will now accompany you for a short distance. Extensive sandy beaches invite you to take a dip in the cool water again and again. At the end of the day, a ferry will take you to Zeeland. The maritime town of Vlissingen is your next overnight stop. The sunset is particularly beautiful during an evening stroll along the sea promenade.

You will spend the day in the province of Zeeland, whose rich nature and long history will amaze you. Beautiful beaches with crystal clear water often accompany you along the route. Culinary delights include fresh mussels and crabs from the sea, and those interested in art and culture will find numerous museums. In Zierikzee, there are over 500 monuments to marvel at and shopping fans will find numerous small boutiques.

In this water kingdom, you can observe numerous bird species as well as beavers. The tranquillity of the untouched nature guarantees deceleration. Contrast this with the hustle and bustle of Dordrecht: In Holland's oldest city, there are over 1,000 monuments to marvel at, and there is always something going on in the picturesque alleys of the city centre.

In the three museum windmills, you can learn all kinds of interesting facts about their origins. Situated between historic drawbridges and picturesque streams, you will also be impressed by the water-rich nature. The stage destination Gouda is not only known for its delicious cheese - you should also try the syrup waffles here. There are many historic buildings to visit in the city centre.

On your last cycling stage, you will roam through the green heart of the Netherlands. A vast natural area, alternating with towns and picturesque villages. You will find everything that is so typical of Holland: cheese, windmills, grazing cows, historic country estates and quaint farms where the old craftsmanship still prevails. The destination of your cycle tour is Amsterdam. The Dutch metropolis cannot be explored in one evening.

After breakfast, your cycling holiday from Belgium to Holland comes to an end. There is much to discover in the capital of the Netherlands. We are happy to book an extension for you, or you can avail of the optional return transfer with our bike bus to Bruges.

After dinner the program for the next day and the global planning of the week are discussed. Instructions on cycling and safely procedures will also be given.

Day 2 Friday:   Bruges - Ghent   ca. 47 km | 29 ml Your first bike ride is along the canal from Bruges to Ghent. Easy riding on towpaths and quiet roads. Once in town you will enjoy a visit of Gent, proud of its rich past, the many well-preserved guild’s and patricians’ houses as well as old warehouses, Gravensteen (a mediaeval castle), St Nicholas Church (with 13th century foundations), St Bavo’s Cathedral and the ‘Belfort’ (Belfry;14th century). In the afternoon a traditional beer tasting, overnight in Ghent.

Day 3 Saturday: Ghent – Middelburg  ca. 45 km | 27 ml Today you will leave Belgium and arrive in the Netherlands. During breakfast you will sail to Sas van Gent and cycle through Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Dutch-Flanders). With a short ferry trip from Breskens to Vlissingen (Flushing) you cross the Westerschelde. From Vlissingen it’s just 30 minutes cycling to Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland. Modern Middelburg has preserved and regained much of its historic and picturesque character. There are lavish 17th and 18th century merchant houses and storehouses standing along canals. The medieval abbey is still in use today, as a museum and as the seat of the provincial government.

Day 4 Sunday: Middelburg - Zierikzee   ca. 45 km | 27 ml First you will ride to the town of Veere, formerly an important trading place. From Veere you will cycle over the Veersgatdam (here you have the possibility of a beach visit) to North Beveland. Soon you will reach the Oosterscheldedam. The enormous locks are built in this embankment and can be closed during storms and high tides protecting the south-west of the Netherlands against the sea. This embankment was one of the last in a series of barriers against the sea. When cycling along the embankment, one will realize why this has been one of the most difficult and costly challenges to protect the country now and in the future and to let seawater into the widespread Delta area. It is precisely why the Deltaworks are referred to as the one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. After this dam you will peddle to Zierikzee.

Day 5 Monday: Zierikzee - Willemstad, sailing to Dordrecht   ca. 45 km | 27 ml A nice ride on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland is on the program. You ride to Bruinisse. The village is known as a very isolated community. The main source of income is the mussel fishery, on the dike to the Grevelingen you will find a statue of an opened mussels. You will ride on to Willemstad (an old fortified town) and go on board there. Sailing to Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities of Holland and located at the crossroads of busy waterways.

Day 6 Tuesday: Dordrecht, Kinderdijk- Gorinchem, sailing to Vianen  ca. 40 km | 25 ml A short ride from Dordrecht to Kinderdijk, the site of the most famous windmill park in the Netherlands. Dating back to the 18th century, the 19 well-preserved stone mills are in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993. Our tour continues through the green heart of Holland until we reach Gorinchem. Visit of the old historical center before we embark and sail to Vianen.

Day 7 Wednesday: Vianen, sailing to Breukelen, cycling to Amsterdam  ca. 30 km | 19 ml During breakfast you will sail to Breukelen (Brooklyn) from where you will cycle to Amsterdam along two of the most beautiful rivers of Holland, the Vecht and the Amstel. Along the route you will find the magnificent country houses and mansions from the 18th century with their splendid, well-kept gardens. Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin as a dam of the river Amstel. Almost without noticing you enter Amsterdam, following the Amstel River. The extensive network of bicycle paths ensures a relatively easy way back into the city, showing you some remarkable sites in the centre. Then it is time to say goodbye to your bike. Before the fare-well dinner you may want to go for a walk in town. At night there you may want to take a canal trip or go on a city walk through the centre of the city

Day 8 Thursday: Amsterdam The tours is officially over after breakfast before 10 AM.

Self-guided cycling holiday from Amsterdam to Bruges

This 8-day self-guided cycling holiday takes you through the ‘green heart’ of Holland before crossing into Belgium to finish in the picture-perfect medieval town of Bruges – known as the ‘pearl of Flanders’.

Beginning in the bustling and cosmopolitan city of Amsterdam , you will cycle in a south-westerly direction on excellent cycle paths. This cycling route is predominantly rural in character and passes through a number of nature reserves, such as the Biesbosch wetlands, as well as the famous Kinderdijk marshlands and windmills. Of course, you will also encounter many historic and picturesque towns and villages along the way. These include Gouda , Dordrecht , Willemstad , Zierikzee , Middelburg , Vlissingen , Sluis and Damme – all remarkably well-preserved and evocative of centuries past.

Day 1: Arrive in Amsterdam

Your cycling holiday begins in Amsterdam, famous for its gorgeous 400-year-old canal district and collection of world-class museums. Try to arrive early so you have time to admire the elegant tree-lined canals and tall narrow townhouses and warehouses dating from the 17 th century.

Day 2: Amsterdam - Gouda / Bodegraven

Distance: 68 km

Leaving bustling Amsterdam, you quickly find yourself cycling in complete tranquillity through Holland’s ‘green heart’. This is a very pleasant rural area of low-lying polders and meadows with grazing cattle.  It is a flat, open landscape where church spires and windmills line the horizon and fluffy white clouds are reflected in the still lakes and canals. For centuries, people flocked to the local markets in Gouda to buy horses, cows, meat, turf, seed, and of course cheese!  We recommend an evening stroll around the old part of town to soak up the old-world atmosphere. The large and attractive market square boasts a wonderful fifteenth century town hall as well as an old weighing house.

Day 3: Gouda / Bodegraven- Papendrecht / Dordrecht

Distance: 38 km

From Gouda you’ll continue your cycle through the “Green heart of Holland” to the village of Kinderdijk. Here you will find a quintessentially Dutch landscape of marshes and waterways, overlooked by a row of 19 windmills which have been standing majestically since 1740. Historically, they were used to drain excess water out of the low-lying polder up into the River Lek. One of the mills is open to the public.

Your destination for the night, Papendrecht, is just a short ferry crossing away from Holland’s oldest city, Dordrecht. Dordrecht is completely surrounded by water, and its strategic position made it an important trading town throughout the centuries. Beautiful bridges take you across the water into the heart of town. Around the harbour you will see many monumental buildings.

The hotel in Papendrecht is just 3 km outside the centre of Dordrecht on the north banks of the river.

Day 4: Papendrecht / Dordrecht – Willemstad

Diistance: 65 km

Today’s cycle route takes you through the Biesbosch National Park, one of Holland’s largest areas of natural landscape. The result of a major flood in 1421, Biesbosch is one of the few remaining wetland habitats in Europe where the ecosystem has adapted both to saltwater coming in from the sea through tidal creeks, and to freshwater coming down in the rivers. It’s an ever-changing labyrinth of creeks and riverlets encompassing countless little islands of willow woods and reeds, a paradise for birds, beavers and deer.

Round off the day in Willemstad, a fortified town shaped like a seven-pointed star.

Please note: Biesbosch Park can only be cycled on days the ferry runs. There is an alternate route for days with no ferry departure.

Day 5: Willemstad – Schuddebeurs

Distance: 50 km

Today you will enter the province of Zeeland, an area characterized by light, wind, water and lots of space. It is essentially a vast delta, into which many of Europe’s rivers drain. You will use a combination of bridges and ferries to make your way between Zeeland’s islands and peninsulas and drift down towards Belgium.

Picture-book towns with ancient houses and cobbled streets await you over the coming days. You will enjoy very pleasant cycling through a patchwork landscape of vast polders, idyllic countryside, rolling dunes and golden sand flats.

Overnight tonight in the wooded hamlet of Schuddebeurs.

Day 6: Schuddebeurs – Middelburg / Vlissingen

Distance: 43 km

Begin your day with a stroll around the narrow streets of Zierikzee. Quaint little old houses take you back in time to the town’s glory days when ships set sail carrying salt, wool, fish, grain and red dye as far afield as the Baltic and the Mediterranean.

Your route then continues to the charming village of Veere. From 1541 everything that was imported to Holland from Scotland (mainly wool) came ashore in and was distributed from Veere. This contract brought the town not only prosperity but also a very lively Scottish expat community.

Cruising further south, you will discover the nostalgic splendour of the city of Middelburg, capital of Zeeland. Featuring a majestic harbour, the town was one of the Netherlands’ most important centres of trade In the 16 th and 17 th centuries.

Day 7: Middelburg / Vlissingen – Brugge

Distance: 66 km

After a hearty breakfast, you will cycle to Vlissingen. After Vlissingen hop on a ferry boat to Zeelandic Flanders with its winding country roads, pollard willows, wet meadows and scattered villages. Having crossed the border into Belgium, you will reach the charming little town of Damme on the banks of the romantic Damse Vaart. From here, it’s only a short stretch to Bruges, the pearl of Flanders!

Bruges is an enchanting town that has been welcoming tourists for about 150 years. With most of its medieval architecture intact, it remains exceptionally well preserved and can really give you a sense of times gone by when it was at the centre of the European wool and cloth trade.

Day 8: Departure

Your cycling holiday comes to an end this morning after breakfast.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your bike tour in the Netherlands, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). The Amsterdam airport is about five and a half miles (nine km) from the town center.

You can take a train from Schiphol Airport directly into Amsterdam Central station. The train station is located below the terminal building. The train gets you to Amsterdam Central Station in approximately 15 minutes. Two of our recommended pre-trip hotels are in walking distance from the Central Station. We recommend that you buy the Amsterdam Travel Ticket that allows you to make unlimited use of the train and bus to and from Schiphol, and all trams, metros, and buses in the city centre for up to 24 hours.

To get more information about getting to town from the airport, check out the airport's web page at www.schiphol.nl/en/page/transportation-from-schiphol/ and to plan your journey with public transportation, you can use www.ns.nl/en .

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at a cafe, IJ-Kantine (NDSM-Kade 5, 1033 PG Amsterdam), at 9:30 AM on the first day of the trip. Enjoy a small snack here, while your guides will give you specific information about riding bikes in the Netherlands and do a bike fitting to ensure your comfort on your Trek Domane or your Trek Verve+ this week. You'll then be ready to ride right from IJ-Kantine, out of Amsterdam, along the canals, all the way to Edam. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Indigo The Hague - Palace Noordeinde (+31 70 209 9000) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. You may take a taxi to the first night’s hotel for approximately 80 euros. The trip takes around 30 minutes from the airport. On select dates, your first hotel will be Boutique Hotel De Salon van Fagel (+31 (0)70 221 0882). All other travel details remain the same.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at The Pand Hotel (or Dukes' Academie on select dates) in Bruges at 11:45 AM. A private Trek Travel shuttle will depart from the hotel at 12:00 PM noon to Bruges' Central station from where you can easily catch a train to Brussels airport or to other Belgian towns, like Ghent or Antwerp. The train ride from Bruges Central station to Brussels airport takes approximately 90 minutes and trains run every hour. Please do not schedule a flight out of Brussels airport before 5:00 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays.

After a short round of introductions, your guides will discuss the rules of bike safety and specific cycling tips for riding in the Netherlands before familiarizing you with your Trek bicycle and ensuring a comfortable fit. Then it’s off on your first ride towards the seashore and along the canals to Edam, well-known for its rich tradition in cheesemaking. Stop here for a sample, but don’t sit too long, as we have several charming Dutch villages to spin through on our way to Beemster and Schermer, both historic UNESCO World Heritage sites. Both are known for the low-lying land that sits below sea level, known as polders, which are bounded by dikes on all sides. We’ll cap off today’s ride with lunch at a local restaurant followed by a shuttle to The Hague, our home for the next four nights, which just happens to also be the home of the Dutch royal family! Bruges to Amsterdam

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Day 1: Bruges – Aalterbrug – cruise to Ghent (13 miles/21 km) When you arrive on board your ship (between 12:30-1:30 pm), you can put your luggage in your cabin and settle down for a cup of tea or coffee. It's a great moment to become acquainted with your guide, skipper, crew, and of course, your fellow passengers. At 2:00 pm, you'll start off from the city walls of Bruges towards Ghent. The barge will mostly be following the canal between Bruges and Ghent to Aalterbrug.

At 2:00 pm, You will cycle along the canal from Bruges to Ghent. Easy riding on towpaths and quiet roads. At Aalterbrug the barge picks you up and sails to the bustling city Ghent. During dinner aboard the ship, the program for the next day and the global planning of the week are discussed. Instructions on cycling and safety procedures will also be given. Overnight in Ghent.

Day 2: Rest day in Ghent Ghent wears its history like a badge of honor, boasting a vibrant tapestry of well-preserved guilds, patricians' houses, and ancient landmarks. The Gravensteen, a medieval castle, stands as a formidable relic, while the St Nicholas Church and St Bavo's Cathedral, rooted in 13th-century foundations, echo the city's enduring past. The 'Belfort' (Belfry), a 14th-century marvel, completes this historical ensemble.

Yet, Ghent transcends the confines of a mere museum town. Its lively spirit emanates from numerous squares and cozy pubs, creating a delightful fusion of medieval grandeur, stylish shopping streets, splendid mansions, and the charming working-class quarters of the early 20th century—now often inhabited by students. Picture busy little squares where the air is filled with the joyous chatter of people dining until the late hours on warm summer nights.

For a different perspective, hop on a bike with your guide(optional). Explore the silent witnesses of Destelbergen's history, where castles and luxurious villas line the landscape, narrating tales of the municipality's rich heritage along the serene banks of the river Scheldt, just a stone's throw away from the heart of Ghent. Overnight in Ghent.

Day 3: Ghent – Middelburg (28 miles/45 km) Today you'll leave Belgium and arrive in the Netherlands. During breakfast, the ship will cruise to Sas van Gent from where you'll depart to cycle through the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Dutch-Flanders). Enjoy a short ferry trip from Breskens to Vlissingen (Flushing), crossing the Westerschelde. From Vlissingen, it's just 30 more minutes of cycling to reach Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland.

Modern Middelburg has regained as well as preserved much of its historic and picturesque character. You'll discover lavish 17th- and 18th-century merchant houses and storehouses standing along the canals and a medieval abbey that's still in use today as a museum and seat of provincial government. Overnight in Middelburg.

Day 4: Middelburg – Zierikzee (31 miles/50 km) Start today with a ride to the town of Veere, formerly an important center for trade. From Veere, you'll cycle over the Veersgatdam (with the possibility of a beach visit here) to North Beveland. Soon, you'll reach the Oosterscheldedam. The enormous locks are built in this embankment and can be closed during storms and high tides to protect the south-west of the Netherlands from the sea. This embankment was one of the last in a series of barriers built against the ocean. When cycling along the embankment, you'll see why protecting the country now and in the future, and letting seawater into the widespread Delta area, has been one of the most difficult and costly challenges for the Netherlands. This is precisely why the Deltaworks are referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. After visiting the dam, you'll continue pedaling to Zierikzee. Overnight in Zierikzee.

Day 5: Zierikzee – Willemstad – cruise to Dordrecht (34 miles/55 km) Enjoy cycling on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland towards Bruinisse. This village is known to be a very isolated community, where the main source of income is the mussel fishery - as you cycle along the dike to the Grevelingen, you'll find a statue of an opened mussel.

Many of these barges are former working river vessels, converted specifically for this kind of passenger vacation. The barges comply with the strict safety regulations set forth by the Dutch Shipping Inspection Authorities. Do not expect a luxury cruise ship. The experience of the tour is built around guests being active cyclists, and the layout of the barge supports a social environment in common spaces.

Great tour!

What a great way to experience the Netherlands. The country side was charming. Amsterdam was exciting. Gear place to visit.

Great way to see Belgium and Netherlands!

Being our first bike tour, we didn't know what to expect going into the tour, but we had a great time. The whole team was amazing from the first day to the last day. Having dietary restrictions, they were more than accommodating and didn't make it seem like a burden. All the stops along the way were great and our guide was so knowledgeable. Can't wait to do another one!

Amazing way to travel!

Can’t wait to go on another trip! The barge was comfortable, food tasty, guide and staff wonderful and I really enjoyed the whole itinerary. The fortified cities shaped like stars were so unique and I enjoyed sailing on the boat, enjoying a happy hour glass on the deck after a long day biking.

Bruge to Amsterdam by Bike & Boat

I loved seeing Belgium and Netherlands by the calm pace of the bike and barge. It was exciting to see and experience the cities, small towns and villages, countryside, canals, forests, and farms & communities where people lived. The barge was comfortable, staff was great and the food on the barge was fabulous. I would definitely consider another trip by bike and barge.

Bike & Barge Tour

My husband and I both had a great time on our tour. We biked from Brugge to Amsterdam. Our guide was knowledgeable, the food was fabulous and we enjoyed getting to know the other bikers as we traveled through beautiful country. We highly recommend.

Great bike and boating trip!

Our guide Seitse was terrific - very knowledgeable about the areas and routes. The crew on board Sailing Home made us feel very welcome and the food was excellent. The riding was quite pleasant (very flat almost everywhere) such that we rarely turned on our ebikes. Overall, it was a great way to see parts of Belgium and the Netherlands.

Terrific introduction to bike touring

From the first moment to the last we had a great time. Thirteen riders and a great guide made for a splendid week touring the countryside between Brugge and Amsterdam. The pace was perfect with plenty of stops for food and drink. Our boat was nicely appointed and the on board chef made a different gourmet meal every night. We recommend a guided tour though we haven't tried a self guided tour yet.

excellent bike adventure

Our barge crew was excellent, the group was wonderful and special, the food was very good and the trip a wonderful entry into bike and barging. Looking forward to more cycling and barging trips in the future.

We're glad you had a great time on tour. Thank you very much for your picture and your review!

Excellent format - Barge Bike tour

Very enjoyable tour. Excellent crew. Excellent food. Excellent company. It is a good mixture of bike & barge travel. The cycling is gentle and Holland is flat. It is good to have a guide as it is impossible to get lost. Cycle routes in Belgium & Holland are very well organised, safe with minimum traffic and great scenery. Would recommend it. Note cabins are small.

BikeTours.com staff reply from Brittany October 3, 2017

We're delighted to hear you had a great time! I agree that the bike and boat tours are a wonderful way to explore Holland and Belgium. Thank you for taking the time to review!

Great Bike and Barge

The guide and barge crew were wonderful and very helpful and understanding. It was a great way to see the Low Countries. I would suggest they upgrade the quality of the bicycles.

Excellent cycle tour

Such a great way to experience a country! Easy cycling with great sights and experiences. The group wasn't too big, the boat was comfortable and the food was healthy and delicious. The guide kept us moving along excellent trails and he found good places for us to lunch. All the sights he stopped at were very interesting.

(Would like to add a photo but can't)

Discovering the Natherlands

Excellent value, great tour, excellent food! We will gladly do another one of these small group tours one day. The group was a great size to give the opportunity to get to know each member of the group. Wonderful places and scenery.

Great scenery, great boat and easy biking

The food on the boat was terrific, our guide provided wonderful walking tours of the towns and cities and at the end of the day, we can rest, sitting on the top deck of the boat, and look at the views.

Excellent--Exceeded My Expectations

Everything was perfect on the Liza Marleen. Captain Els set the tone that was professional and relaxing. Chef Mariah's culinary creations were inventive and delicious. Guide Bert's attention ensured a carefree day of riding. And then there was the scenery! Riding was easy and the distance perfect (30-is miles a day) made for days I will remember for a long time. Room was more comfortable than many boats similar size with AC and fabulous showers.

Bikes and Boats! And Lots More!

Comfortable bikes and idyllic rides. The Liza Marleen was a comfortable barge with great staff. Food terrific. A wonderful combination of touring and history, city walks and countryside explorations.
