The Ultimate Guide to Coachella Safari Tent Camping

The Ultimate Guide to Coachella Safari Tent Camping

The after Coachella blues have kicked in. Now that this year’s festival is over all I can do is draw on the great memories created at one of the most amazing music festivals in the world. Our experience was made even better this year because we splurged on Coachella Safari Tent Camping (or Glamping). If you’re thinking of Safari camping then I highly recommend it. Here is everything you need to know about Coachella Safari Tent Camping.

What’s Included with Your Safari Tent

safari tent stagecoach

Our golf cart driver giving us the grand tour!

First be prepared to spend some dough since Coachella Safari Tent starts at about $8000. When you take into consideration that this includes:

  • A large safari tent with AC
  • Mini refrigerator
  • 1 or 2 Queen beds
  • 1 large towel per person
  • Full-length mirror
  • Partially covered outdoor sitting area
  • Breakfast buffet
  • Late night buffet
  • Backstage access
  • Non-alcoholic drinks and light snacks
  • A 30-minute massage
  • Golf cart transportation to the stages
  • Special stage viewing area (worth it just for this)
  • Concierge service

You see where I’m going here, it’s totally worth it. Plus Safari guests are treated like royalty! Tents sell out so purchase early to secure one.

Coachella Safari Tent Camping Check-In

It all starts at check-in. We checked in on Thursday morning at one of the nearby hotels- the Rennaissance Indian Wells Resort and Spa. Check in starts on Thursday between 10 am-2 am and continues until Friday between 9 am-Midnight. It was convenient checking in early because we were able to get a head start on setting things up. There weren’t many people on the grounds until Friday. We booked our massages, had a comp glass of champagne and checked out the grounds. Afterwards we went to a nearby Walmart for supplies. There we purchased a kiddie pool, drinks, snacks, a lounge chair, a combination lock and some accessories.

Setting-Up Your Coachella Safari Tent

We set up our tent with a kiddie pool, lights, a fan and some outdoor decor.  By the end of the 4 days, we had a good amount of drinks left in our fridge since you can get drinks by the concierge and in the Safari lounge. They provide complimentary waters, Gatorade, sodas, and snacks. You can’t take alcohol off the grounds but you can drink in your tent and around the grounds.  So you’ll need more alcohol and less non-alcoholic drinks.

We mostly used the chairs they provided and never used the lounge chair since it was just 2 of us. The kiddie pool offered a great place to cool off during the day since it gets pretty hot after 11 am. At night we soaked our tired feet in it. You can dump and refill the water throughout the weekend with the garden hose. Luckily we were close to one, if not the gardener may help you if you’re nice.

Lastly, a fan is also a great investment. You can get one for 20 bucks at Walmart. You’ll need it in the late morning to supplement the AC while getting ready or doing anything inside the tent. Next year we’re getting two fans. It helps when getting ready to go out for the day. I cannot stress enought how hot it gets in the late morning inside the tent.

Concierge Service

The concierge service is amazing; they are super nice! We were provided with most anything we asked for. They even had an iron and ironing board. If they don’t have it they will go out, get it for you and bring it to your room (for a fee of course). They offered early merch purchase at the concierge desk on an iPad although they didn’t have band merch just Coachella stuff. This is also where you will book your comp massage, which really eases any stress from hard partying. You will also walk by the concierge to go catch a golf cart to the festival.

Golf Carting Around and VIP Areas

So golf carts, they are readily available during the day, up until around 6:30 then they get busy.  Plan for the cart to take 15-20 minutes or longer at this time. The golf cart drivers are super nice and accommodating. Sometimes they carry water in case you need it. They will take you to any of the stages you want including the Sahara, Mojave, Gobi, Outdoor and Main. You also have access to all VIP areas including the artist VIP section. We didn’t spend much time there.  Keep in mind that they water down the street where the golf cart travels so you may get some mud splatter on you. It’s truly a rock star experience.

The only improvement I would suggest is transportation to the Yuma (dance tent). We usually were dropped off at the Main to walk to the Yuma. If you want to be carted from one stage to the other after a set that is also an option. This makes it so that you can maximize your time and see as many sets as possible. You can walk right into the guest viewing areas from where the golf cart drops you off. These areas sectioned off to the left of the stage. If you want to see a band at the rail make sure to get there about 15-30 minutes early, maybe more for headliners.

Safari Grounds

The Safari tent grounds are pretty plush. The Safari Lounge sits in the middle and all tent rows lead to it. This is where you will get your breakfast and late night snacks. It is an air-conditioned tent with wifi, a bar, and DJ. There are lawn games close to the yurts (these are on the same grounds) and an outdoor lounge area with hammocks and loungers. There is a pergola where pilates and yoga take place in the morning. The massage rooms are closer to the concierge desk. You will find three coolers with drinks you can pick up on your way in and out of the grounds by the concierge desk.

Two bathroom and shower trailers sit at each end of the camp. The air-conditioned bathrooms are kept pretty clean and stocked with lotion and feminine products. The showers are decent and also stocked with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. I did notice that when there were more than 3 people in the shower the water pressure and hot water became scarce.

To Sum It All Up

Coachella Safari Tent Camping is the one if not the best music festival experience I’ve ever had. I’ve been to multiple festivals including Ultra, Bonnaroo, Panorama, Okeechobee and other small festivals The only suggestion I would make is that they add a couple more shower trailers and a lounge on the festival grounds just for Safari guests. Also, something to do on Thursday night for Safari guests, for instance, something like the Outstanding in the Field Dinner or a more formal sit-down dinner for Safari guests.  All we were able to do was The Antartic and the buffet dinner in the lounge but something more substantial and social would rock.  Other than that, I highly recommend Safari camping it’s a truly luxurious and unforgettable experience.

It’s actually a nice and useful piece of information. I’m happy that you shared this useful info with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.

' src=

is it worth the money? I want to do safari camping!

' src=

Was looking for something just like this and you nailed it thanks! Hopefully they don’t raise the price next year

' src=

I think its totally worth it. You get to see more sets up-close in the VIP section just for Safari guests. They serve an awesome buffet breakfast and late night spread. There’s a concierge service that goes out to fetch you most anything you need. It’s a total rock star experience!

Festival Survival Guide Logo

Are you planning your trip to a summer festival?

For anyone who is a fan of country and Americana, then the Stagecoach Festival has to be your first stop. With numerous stages and events, you can not afford to miss the biggest country event of the summer.

If you are thinking of attending, or you already have your ticket, then we can be your guide. Below, we’ll give you the need to know information for the Stagecoach Festival.

The Stagecoach Festival Line-Up

Stagecoach Country Music Festival is one of the  biggest and best country events  in the US. This is because of its world-class line-up and packed program of events. Among the excellent lineup of country artists, you can expect to see a mix of artists from Americana and roots.

As well as checking out our mainstage artists, take a look at the smaller Stagecoach events. They have some excellent daytime artists and music to help you relax on a hot, sticky afternoon.

In addition to the music, they have a host of awesome attractions to take in. For families, the indoor Half-Pint Hootenanny provides activities for the younger members of the festival. If you want to get your dancing shoes on, you can visit the Honkytonk Dancehall to get yourself in the mood before the festival even begins.

All passes include a wristband that will grant you access for the three days of the festival. In addition, you can upgrade it to include shuttle passes, better seating, or access to stage areas.

However, our favorite upgrade is the pass and limited edition Festival T-Shirt, so you have a once in a lifetime souvenir to remember your weekend.

What to Eat and Drink

The festival has some of the best places to eat and drink that you can imagine. There are new attractions every year but some of the excellent catering in the past has included the Barefoot Wine Space, our Craft Beer Barn, the Cocktail Cabin, and a range of bars located around the grounds.

For food, you must try  Guy Fieris Stagecoach Smokehouse . Guy provides a whole range of BBQ flavors from across the country, from Tennessee to Georgia, all on delicious cuts of tender meat. Yum!

Where to Stay

Luckily, Stagecoach has a wide range of accommodation options available to give everyone the festival experience that is right for them. From traditional camping to more luxurious abodes, you can definitely find something to suit your needs.

The first option, and the cheapest, is to buy a ticket that includes camping for the whole weekend. Slots are available with power for anyone who wants some home comforts. We even have car camping available, so you can drive straight in and pitch up.

For anyone who wants a more upmarket experience, or for families with children, we have ready to go accommodation in the Safari grounds behind the festival space. These are two and four-person ready-to-go safari tents that include pillows, bedding, and cots so you don’t have to bring all your equipment in transit.

You can also upgrade them to tents with a built-in lounge or yurt style accommodation.

The safari grounds can even cater to people who are bringing their own RV or camper van. An RV ticket will give you a spot to park and access to all the amenities available and access to the festival. Finally, if you don’t want to hassle and fuss or arranging the whole thing, you can sign up for the travel and accommodation packages!

Of course, some people want to get a break from the excitement of the festival grounds and stay offsite. There are a number of options available, from hotels to campsites, in the close vicinity of the grounds.

Getting to and From the Venue

Stagecoach Festival is situated on the grounds of the Empire Polo Club, and already has a range of access options. For drivers, day parking is free for all people attending the festival.

The festival also operates a number of park and ride shuttles from a selection of local drop off points and hotels. If you buy a shuttle pass when you buy your ticket, you can save $15. Taxi services can also take you to the festival and drop you at the friends and family drop off point.

The festival is served by three major airports. These are Palm Springs International, Los Angeles International, and Ontario International Airport. The festival also has two private airfields close by, the Jacqueline Cochran Regional and Bermuda Dunes.

Staying Safe

The festival grounds of the Stagecoach Country Music Festival are extremely safe and patrolled by expert security staff.

To keep you safe, a number of  items are banned from entry  including any sort of weapon, drugs, flammables, laser pointers, and animals. If you want to keep your belongings locked away, you can also reserve one of our on-site storage lockers.

Environmental Concerns

Stagecoach Festival and its management team are fully committed to  protecting the environment . They have an integrated program that evolves every year to help use resources more responsibly and help reduce the impact on the land.

To assist with this, they partner with Global Inheritance. They have a number of festival events that concentrate on sustainability. Past events have included Art of Recycling, the TRASHed Recycling Store, and the Energy Playground.

If you want to get involved, then you can join their Waste Gang.  Contact them here  to sign up for all the fun.

5 improvements we'd like to see at Stagecoach, California's country music festival

safari tent stagecoach

The 2024 Stagecoach country music festival has come to a close, and there were many memorable moments from this year's festival. From Jelly Roll 's guest-filled debut performance to Miranda Lambert bringing the hits to Morgan Wallen 's magnificent headlining set, it all speaks to what makes Stagecoach a prominent country festival.

What sets Stagecoach apart from other festivals within the genre is not only its location in the Southern California desert, but its atmosphere, which is a celebration of Americana fused with a family-reunion-at-a-honky-tonk vibe. But there's room for Los Angeles promoter Goldenvoice to make some necessary changes to California's country festival on many levels, because aspects of the festival look and feel the same each year.

Here are five improvements we'd like to see at Stagecoach.

Please, no more changes to the Stagecoach festival layout

In the past, the Stagecoach festival had a consistent layout with the Mane Stage located on the east side of the Empire Polo Club. In 2023, the organizers decided to adopt the Coachella layout, which placed the Mane Stage on the north end of the property. This year, the festival returned to the old layout, but with some changes.

The standing GA area was expanded, and the areas for people with blankets and chairs were moved further back toward the courtyard. Navigating through the crowd from the Mane Stage to the Palomino tent was more challenging than in previous years, given the larger standing GA area and the paths designated for walking through it. Festivalgoers walking between the Mane Stage and the Palomino tent had to navigate through a large crowd going up and down from the main entrance and Terrace area — unless they spotted the easy-to-miss express walkway behind one of the screens.

Organizing different areas for premium passholders, general admission, and people who bring blankets and chairs is commendable, but it would be ideal for organizers to create a permanent map based on what worked in the past — with some minor adjustments — and stop changing it each year.

Use the Outdoor Theatre from Coachella as the Palomino

One of my biggest complaints about Stagecoach is that the Palomino tent stage is not being utilized correctly. In the past, Lynyrd Skynyrd , Willie Nelson , ZZ Top , and other artists have drawn huge crowds to this stage, which is the Mojave tent during Coachella, and it's often filled beyond its maximum capacity. For instance, on Friday night, an estimated 20,000-some people were waiting to see Nickelback perform in the Palomino. Even other performances such as The Beach Boys , Leon Bridges , and Clint Black saw crowds that exceeded the tent's capacity.

Simply putting a monitor on the lawn to the side of the stage is not enough, the Palomino tent and the areas surrounding it still have capacity issues. It's unclear why the organizers have not expanded the stage or utilized the Outdoor Theatre stage from Coachella, knowing that thousands of people will pack into the tent to see the classic rock or older country bands. It would be a welcome addition to the festival.

Bring the Mustang tent back to Stagecoach and add more music

There used to be more music at Stagecoach and another stage for indie, alternative and classic country acts. The Gobi and Sahara tents at Coachella remained where they were and were renamed the Mustang and Palomino for the country festival. In 2018 and 2019, the much smaller Gobi tent became the Palomino, which was an obvious mistake and caused its own capacity issues.

In 2022, the larger Palomino tent returned, and what was the Mustang has been used as the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, a brand tie-in for the western TV show "Yellowstone," which features food vendors, merchandise and more.

With "Yellowstone" set to release its fifth and final season soon, it would be great to see more music back at Stagecoach with the return of the Mustang tent featuring more country artists on the rise, alternative and indie country and more.

Can we get some new art installations?

Some might say Stagecoach festivalgoers don't seem to appreciate art installations like the Coachella crowd does, but that seems to be a misconception. Thousands of festivalgoers pose for group photos and selfies in front of the "Mustang" sculpture and local artist Sofia Enriquez' “MISMO” paisleys, but these have been featured at the festival for the past few years now.

During Coachella, the art installations add to the overall aesthetic of the event and also provide more much-needed shade and resting areas — all while balancing all the corporate branding placed throughout the festival. Organizers should consider featuring some of the Coachella art or creating art exclusively for Stagecoach to give the grounds a more visually appealing — and more practical — feel.

Better production is needed for Stagecoach's Mane Stage acts

This is probably more on the artists and speaks to the genre of country music itself, but the production for some who perform on the Mane Stage is colorless. If these people are big names, regardless of what time each is performing, there should be something other than a background with just their names on the screen.

Some arguments from the audience's perspective are probably "it's more about the music" or "they don't need pyro for every song."

Fair point, but Elle King , Jelly Roll , Hardy and Morgan Wallen put on memorable shows over the weekend because of their visual production. Even Eric Church's red stained glass windows on the production screen were pleasing. Jelly Roll's visuals and use of pyro accentuated his set. Both Hardy and Wallen made full use of the Mane Stage's production capabilities to enhance the music.

Even The Beach Boys ' performance in the Palomino stage had fun visuals, historic footage of the band members while revealing lyrics of the songs inviting the audience to sing along.

Stagecoach and Coachella fans leave behind tons of camping gear, clothes, food. Here’s what happens to it

Once music fans file out of the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio at the end of the Stagecoach and Coachella festivals, the work begins for charitable organizations who turn the discarded clutter — more than 24 tons of it strewn throughout the 642-acre property — into a benefit for the local needy.

Among the things left behind on the festival grounds are clothing, camping gear, dry foods and other goods that local community organizations pick up by the truckload to help benefit the low-income and unhoused people they serve.

Many out-of-town festival attendees leave behind folding tables or camping chairs because they fly into Southern California and purchase what they need for the weekend but can’t carry the items onto a plane when they leave, said Lupe Torres-Hilario, director of operations at the Galilee Center , a nonprofit that fulfills food, clothing and basic needs for local disadvantaged children, families and farmworkers in the East Coachella Valley.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival ran April 12-14 and April 19-21. The Stagecoach Country Music Festival ran April 26- 28.

For the last five years, the Galilee Center has sent two trucks to the Stagecoach festival and four trucks to the Coachella festival the day after the festivities end. Volunteers and Galilee Center staff split up among the campsites to find left-behind items or ask attendees who are packing up their campsites whether they have anything to donate.

“When they do [want to donate] they sometimes hand us a canopy still open and we’ll close it, pack it up and put it in our truck,” Torres-Hilario said.

The differences — and similarities — between the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals

The Stagecoach Country Music Festival is held in Indio at the same site as Coachella. What do the festivals have in common?

April 26, 2024

The festivals attract different types of fans: Coachella attendees rely primarily on tent camping and car camping while Stagecoach fans often arrive in RVs, she said. There are fewer discarded items after Stagecoach because people pack up their RVs and leave, Torres-Hilario said.

Galilee Center also often gets calls from event sponsors who want to donate tables, chairs and throw rugs.

This year, the center gathered 48,480 pounds of donations from Coachella. The total for items collected after Stagecoach hasn’t been calculated yet.

Last year, Goldenvoice, the music festival promoter that puts on Coachella and Stagecoach, donated a total of 34.6 tons of materials from Coachella and Stagecoach.

Most of the donated items are put in the Galilee Center’s thrift store to be sold; the proceeds go toward the organization’s programs. The funds are used for programs that offer assistance with rent and utility bill assistance and to purchase items like diapers for infants, protein drinks for seniors and food to replenish the center’s distribution program.

Clothing and furniture vouchers given to low-income individuals and families can be used at the center’s thrift store to pay for items recovered from the music festivals. Left-behind cots and sleeping bags often are given to unhoused people for free, Torres-Hilario said.

“Some of it is trash and we throw it away, but for the most part, a lot of the stuff is in good condition that I could easily grab from Coachella and hand it over to a family in need,” she said.

In addition to Galilee, nonprofit organizations that have partnered include Martha’s Village and Kitchen and the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission.

Martha’s Village and Kitchen serves unhoused and impoverished people in the Coachella Valley and Riverside County. The nonprofit gets calls for donation dropoff or pickup during and after the event, said Alexandra Vargas, its spokesperson.

When a client graduates from the organization’s residential program into their own home, items from the thrift store can be used to furnish their house.

The Coachella festival also benefits the needy when music fans visit the Indio thrift story operated by Martha’s Village and Kitchen during “Thrift-chella,” an annual sale event that offers deals such as five pieces of clothing for $1.

Often festivalgoers who buy in bulk at the thrift store bring back items to donate that they didn’t use during the festivals or can’t take with them on on the way home.

Thousands of country music fans arrive at Stagecoach and some make a dash for the best

“Things like that help us with our revenue because whatever we make from the thrift store, that funds everything we do,” Vargas said.

Surplus food from the festivals also helps support charitable organizations. Each day of the festivals, the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission rolls a food truck to the festival grounds to pick up leftover food from all the food booths to be served as meals at the mission, said Scott Wolf, its development director.

“We serve anywhere between 700 and 1,000 meals a day here at the Rescue Mission, so the foods that are donated by Goldenvoice goes a long way to assisting us with serving those meals,” Wolf said.

Why is Coachella headliner Doja Cat L.A.’s only female rap megastar?

Many women have come close to achieving major success, but Doja Cat is the only female from L.A. to have achieved remotely comparable levels of superstardom to Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar.

April 11, 2024

Whether it’s donations or “Thrift-chella,” Vargas said she feels like the total amount donated to her group from the festivals has increased in recent years. She said she isn’t sure if it’s because of influencers spreading the word about the donations or it’s just an increase in awareness.

“Throughout the years it’s been more of a benefit for our community,” she said.

Martha’s Village and Kitchen’s client population is 55% families and children who receive services such as daycare with a fee that’s income-based, shelter and an emergency food pantry. Packaged food donations particularly help keep the pantry stocked, “especially because the cost of groceries has increased so much with inflation,” Vargas said.

The donations are greatly needed, she said, because the lines at the food pantry have been growing longer over the past year.

I Camped at Coachella, Here’s Why I’d Never Do It Again

Coachella is a music and arts festival that brings together 250,000 people each spring. Taking place in Coachella Valley, Calif., this massive party grosses more than $100 million.

But you might think twice about camping at the festival. Keep reading to find out why I will never camp at Coachella again.

safari tent stagecoach

What Kinds of Camping Are Allowed at Coachella?

Camping options at Coachella include staying in your own tent or car, booking one of the festival’s tents or lodges, or staying at Safari Campground in a tent or yurt. Most people do tent or car camping, as it’s the most budget-friendly option.

The festival’s Safari Campground has furnished tents and yurts to rent. They include guest passes for two people with the option to add more guests.

Or you can stay in a tent or lodge at the festival’s Lake Eldorado. These accommodations have cots, bedding, toilets, and showers.

How Much Does It Cost to Camp at Coachella?

You will need to purchase a camping pass along with your festival ticket. Camping passes start at $102 for tent and car camping. You’ll also need to pay TOT (transient occupancy tax) and other fees, such as a $10 convenience fee. There are also preferred car camping options that provide you with a reserved site near the venue entrance. Preferred camping is $266 plus fees.

The Safari Campground’s rates start at $7,500 per weekend for a furnished tent or yurt. And Lake Eldorado’s tents and lodges start at $2,331 plus fees.

Why I Would Never Camp at Coachella Again

Besides the high prices and close quarters, there are five other main reasons I’ll never camp at Coachella again. Take a look.

Sand Gets Everywhere

Coachella is in the desert, and it’s in a windy valley. Therefore, sand gets everywhere. Literally everywhere! From people walking around to vehicles moving about, the sand gets kicked up and flies into everything.

Attendees often have to wear a bandana or mask around their faces to keep from breathing in the vast amount of sand and dust. It took me days to get all of the sand out of my camping gear, clothes, food, and vehicle.

No Escape From the Heat

The heat is intense in Coachella Valley in the spring when the festival takes place. Imagine being in the desert heat for a weekend with 250,000 of your “closest friends.”

On top of the sun’s heat, you’re at a music festival, so you’re dancing and moving around a lot. And when you’re tent or car camping, you’re stuck sweating through any sleep you manage to get.

Your Stuff Can Walk Away

Camping at a large festival, unfortunately, leaves your possessions at risk. Theft is quite common at Coachella or any other event its size. Some of it is premeditated, while other times might be a drunken mishap .

Either way, don’t think your belongings are secure when camping at Coachella. If you do camp at the festival, I highly recommend only bringing the things you need and leaving any valuable gear at home.

You’re Exposed to the Weather

As I mentioned, the heat and wind can be intense in Coachella Valley. While camping at the festival, there’s little you can do to get away from the weather.

Tents and cars sit close together in the designated camping areas, and if there’s inclement weather, that’s all you have. Plus, vehicles must stay on the festival grounds for the entire weekend.

safari tent stagecoach

Packing Up After Partying Is Awful

Coachella is one big party! And packing up your campsite after you’ve partied hard for a weekend is awful. The last thing I want to do is to clean up and travel at a designated check-out time.

Staying at a campground off-site from the festival that I had booked for a couple of days post-Coachella would have been my preferred option, looking back. I could have taken an Uber back to the campground and slept off the partying without having to pack up as soon as the festival concluded.

Do They Allow RV Camping at Coachella?

The only vehicles allowed to camp at Coachella are passenger cars, trucks, and vans. So you could get in with a camper van, but not an RV or bus. There simply isn’t enough space to accommodate anything larger than a van.

safari tent stagecoach

What Are Other Lodging Options at Coachella?

You can stay in the Safari Campground or at Lake Eldorado if you don’t want to bring your tent or car. But there are also plenty of options outside of the festival grounds.

There are several campgrounds and RV resorts in the Coachella Valley area. You can even find some boondocking spots on BLM land near the south entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, which is a short distance from the festival.

In addition, there are numerous hotels in the area. However, you’ll need to book well in advance to get a room during Coachella. Airbnb and other vacation rentals are also plentiful in the Indio and Palm Springs area.

Is Camping at Coachella Worth Trying?

In my opinion, it’s not worth it. But if it’s a bucket list item for you, I say go for it. My recommendation would be to book a campground nearby for when you have to leave the festival grounds so that you can sleep off all that partying.

Attending Coachella is a fantastic opportunity. It’s fun, energizing, and an all-around good time. If you have a chance to score tickets, I highly recommend attending.

But I would skip camping at Coachella until you see what it’s like for yourself. You could always try camping at the festival the following year if it looks appealing to you.

Would you ever camp at Coachella?

North Island Okavango Brings Spacious Luxury Tents to One of Botswana’s Most Wildlife-rich Regions

Set on a private island, North Island Okavango offers safaris by boat, locally-sourced cuisine, and just three intimate tents.

Partway through our first afternoon game drive at North Island Okavango, a new luxury camp in northwestern Botswana, our guide, Diesel Tshosa, said, “I can be quiet because I can get lost in the concentration of tracking animals, so ask me a question if you want.”

My 15-year-old nephew, Caleb, who had dreamed of going on safari since he was 5, responded, “I like quiet.”

The quiet wasn’t all that quiet: We could hear the grunts and snorts of warthog, often before we could see the funny creatures, which would stare at us as we passed them in our safari vehicle and then suddenly burst into a sprint. So many other sounds filled the air: the trumpet of a mother elephant beckoning its calf to draw nearer; the whoosh of water as it closed over a sinking hippo, leaving only a couple of oxpeckers visible on its submerged back; the calls of Cape turtledoves and laughing doves, followed by the whirring of their wings as they beat a quick retreat; the hooves of wildebeest and zebra as they trundled across the savanna. I heard a strange squawk as we passed a stand of trees. “What kind of bird is that?” I asked. “It’s a tree squirrel,” Diesel replied. “Why are you calling, Mr. Tree Squirrel?”

North Island Okavango is precisely as its name describes: The three-tent camp sits in the shade of towering ebony trees on a slight rise of land that the locals call Xuxuga. It’s in the neck of the Okavango Delta; to the south, the giant, slow-moving river fans out across the land. With few other camps nearby, a trip here feels particularly special. (Among those drawn by this privacy: the actor Will Smith, who was North Island’s first guest.)

So, too, the architecture: The camp sits on a series of wooden decks lining a lagoon frequented by hippos and elephants. The aesthetic is spare but elegant, emphasizing contemporary African craft — woven rugs, rich woods, baskets, and pottery. While the details are lovely, their understatedness allows the natural beauty of the setting to shine.

A day at North Island begins early. I was already up when Diesel rapped on our door a little after 5 a.m. the following day. I hadn’t slept well, not because the bed wasn’t comfortable — it was sumptuous — but because my ears weren’t used to the nocturnal soundtrack of moans, groans, and roars. I recognized the chorus of frogs, but as I tried to describe what else I’d heard to Diesel, he chuckled through my pathetic imitations. Still, he deciphered everything: That wail? A male lion. Those grunts? A family of elephants nearby. What sounded like a chorus of baritone kazoos? Those hippos in the lagoon.

After breakfast — eggs cooked to order, cereal, yogurt, fruit, and beautifully strong coffee — we headed for a game drive. The list of animals we saw quickly grew longer and longer: lion, baboon, water buffalo, an African fish eagle, a horned antelope called the Southern reedbuck, a kudu doe and fawn. As the sun rose in the sky, drying the morning dew, the crisp air smelled fruity, almost herbal — like citrus and dried sage. We lingered awhile in the company of a family of spotted hyenas before returning to camp for lunch and a nap.

In the afternoon, tea was served, followed by another drive. Two rare highlights: a regal secretarybird, an endangered bird of prey that looks as if you took the body of an eagle and plopped it atop the long legs of an ostrich, and a leopard, which crossed our path just as the sun began to set. Neither Caleb nor I had ever seen a leopard in the wild. It was smaller than the creatures of my imagination, yet somehow also more imposing. “Wow,” I kept whispering. “Wow. Wow. Wow.”

As dusk dipped into the night, we drove back to camp with only the rustle of the breeze and the sound of the truck in our ears, punctuated occasionally by the call of this creature or that somewhere out there in the bush. Neither Diesel nor Caleb nor I had anything left to say. We just sat in the gorgeous quiet of wonder — wonder at the glory of nature, the wild diversity of the land, the chance to witness such beauty firsthand.

Here’s what you need to know about North Island Okavango.

North Island Okavango

  • North Island Okavango's “tents” are comfortable, expansive, and elegant.
  • With just three tents, the camp feels intimate and exclusive.
  • The area of the Okavango Delta surrounding North Island abounds with wildlife, and because of its remote location, you’ll encounter few other safari vehicles.
  • One never needs to go hungry — or even feel semi-full — at North Island Okavango because the food and drink are abundant and tasty.

The tents at North Island Okavango are really canvas-roofed luxury suites. Each has more than 850 square feet of indoor space, including a separate living room, a bar area with a Nespresso machine, and one and a half bathrooms, including an expansive ensuite with double vanities, soaker tub, and wood-lined, river-stone-paved shower. Each tent has an additional 650 square feet of outdoor space, including decking with lagoon views, a private plunge pool, and an outdoor shower.

Food and Drink

The cuisine at North Island Okavango is best described as abundant and eclectic. Going for a morning game drive? Your guide travels equipped with an array of fresh-baked cookies, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Evening game drive? A traveling bar — with snacks so you don’t drink on an empty stomach.

Meals are served family-style. After cocktails by the fire pit, everyone gathers around the long, wooden dinner table. The chef, Mr. T, told us he sources local and regional ingredients whenever possible. He often dishes up soup as a starter; during our visit, his richly spiced butternut-squash soup warmed us on a chilly evening. My nephew delighted in an ostrich stew — weird, perhaps, to eat a creature we’d seen just hours before on a game drive, but we comforted ourselves in the knowledge that it was not the same bird. It was served alongside a fish curry (which would make little sense printed on a menu, but on the plate, it turned out to be delicious), lentil dal, couscous, and fluffy white rice.

Activities and Amenities

Two game drives per day are included. Optional activities include fishing, hot-air balloon rides, and helicopter excursions.

Because of its unique location, North Island offers the opportunity to do water-based safaris year-round, either by mokoro , the dugout canoes long used by locals to travel the Okavango’s waters, or by motorboat. We opted for the latter one shimmering morning because Diesel said it would be quicker and we’d likely see more wildlife.

As our boat captain and guide, Zone, helped us into our lifejackets, we could see women at the water’s edge, harvesting turpentine grass traditionally used for thatching roofs. “I grew up cutting grasses and taking them to the village on mokoro,” Zone recalled.

As we motored down the river, which the locals call Xamoku, Zone pointed out birds: whistling ducks, which look as if they’re wearing white face masks across their black heads; pied kingfishers; Egyptian geese. We saw a pod of hippos — “There must be more than 50,” Zone said — and plenty of day waterlilies, their blossoms beginning to open in the morning sun. “People collect the roots. It tastes like chicken and also like a potato,” Zone said. “A chicken-flavored potato is so nice.”

On the banks, a group of fishermen was trying to catch bream. One shouted out to Zone that a hippo was downriver: “A very aggressive one.” It stayed hidden under the water's surface, but we did see one enormous crocodile sunning itself.

Family-friendly Offerings

Tents can be set up to accommodate two adults and two children. Children over six are welcome — and the camp is especially suitable for an extended family traveling together.

Accessibility and Sustainability

Environmental regulations require a light eco-footprint, so North Island Okavango’s design means that it can be entirely disassembled, leaving no permanent marks on the land. The camp is entirely solar-powered, and while there is no air conditioning, each tent has an over-the-bed Evening Breeze cooling system, which uses 75 percent less electricity than a conventional air-conditioner.

A local community trust controls the concession in which North Island Okavango sits, and revenues generated by tourist activity benefit the residents of five nearby villages.

Location

The gateway to the Okavango Delta is Maun International Airport in Botswana. From Maun, travelers must take a small charter flight — just under an hour — to the airstrip at Kadizora on Mack Air.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

North Island Okavango is part of the Natural Selection family of lodges and camps. Like most Natural Selection properties, North Island Okavango offers honeymooners 50 percent off the nightly rate for one spouse. (The offer is available for 12 months from the wedding date.) During the shoulder season (April, May, November, and the first half of December), guests staying six nights or more will receive a 10 percent discount.
