Tour de Kook: An Australian Surfpacking Adventure

tour de kook

After their van’s engine blew out and left them with no way of continuing their nomadic life along Australia’s East Coast, Ruby Woodruff and her partner built a makeshift trailer and rack and continued their surfing adventure by bike. Find Ruby’s story of their haphazard journey and a fun 30-minute video documenting their experiences here…

PUBLISHED Dec 14, 2022

Words and photos by Ruby Woodruff ( @rubywood )

Some bikepacking trips require months of careful planning and organisation. They involve scouring the internet to find the best routes, buying and preparing equipment, and convincing one or two of your most fearless friends to come along for the ride. Finally, when all the waiting and anticipation becomes almost too much to handle, you’re ready to leave the nest and let your wild idea fly free. This was not one of those trips.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

The catalyst that sent us bumping and bouncing down Australia’s East Coast with all our belongings – including surfboards – in tow, was when our van, Smoko, literally went up in smoke, taking our hopes and dreams with it. But like the phoenix, we rose from the ashes. In our case, limped from the ashes would be a more accurate statement. We got back on the saddle and pedalled our way back to a stable life – and by stable I mean we looked after some horses on a guy’s property in exchange for food and accommodation.

The events that led up to our “tour de kook” were as challenging, emotional, difficult, and unbelievable as the ride itself, but I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t one of the best adventures of my life.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

BROKE AND BROKEN

We had big dreams when we landed in Australia in 2018. We’d spend our days on the beaches surfing and then stack cash in the evenings at our casual, minimum wage jobs. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as smoothly as we’d planned. Our insufficient funds were soon depleted, and we weren’t able to find any decent work, so we’d resorted to taking on odd jobs – everything from picking tomatoes to picking up dog shit.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

After living off of our bikes for five months, we finally managed to save up enough money to buy a van, which doubled as our home/storage unit. We’d also graduated to blueberry picking ($4 a bucket) and found work close to the coast so we could surf before and after our shift. I wouldn’t say we were thriving, but we had the basics and a small income, so it felt like everything was finally coming together.

As it goes with life, when you’re starting to get comfortable and feel like you might be able to stand on your own two feet for a while, the rug gets ripped from underneath you and you’re back on your ass again.

I still remember the toxic smell of burning oil that engulfed us as we rolled to the side of the road in a black cloud of Smoko. All the emergency bells and whistles that our 1994 Toyota Hiace had were blaring simultaneously, we’d lost power from the engine, and I was sure the whole thing was about to blow. I jumped out of the front seat, flung open the sliding side door, and began throwing all of our belongings out of the van in an attempt to save them from what I was sure was an impending explosion. In full panic mode, I ran into a nearby gas station pleading for a fire extinguisher.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

The van didn’t blow up, but the damage was done. All that remained of our Australian life was strewn across the sidewalk, and when the tow truck arrived to take Smoko away, it felt like everything we’d worked towards was being taken away as well.

The following week was a blur, mostly because my eyes were so full of tears that I couldn’t see clearly. Our van was a write off – the engine was cooked – and we were now homeless, jobless, and clueless as to what to do next.

We moved to a cheap campground at the rugby field in Coffs Harbour, just below a crematorium. Some days, it was hard to tell if the smell of smoke was coming from there or from our belongings. It poured incessantly during our stay, and I was sure that if I wasn’t going to drown in my sorrows, I’d drown in my sleep from the flooded ground that our tent was slowly sinking into. As much as we tried, it was hard to be optimistic during those first dark rainy days.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

SHE’LL BE RIGHT

Once I’d finished wallowing in self-pity, it was time to make a plan. Call me kooky, but I felt like our van blowing up was a sign that we needed a change of pace. We took it as one, at least, and instead of trying to rebuild and re-live what we had, we decided to adapt to our new circumstances and try something different. An online ad led us to a guy who needed help on his property in Sydney, over 500 kilometres away. With nothing else to lose, we reached out and told him our sob story. He agreed to let us come and stay with him. All we had to do was get there.

Although we no longer had a van, we did have our bikes, surfboards, skateboards, and everything else we’d acquired over the past six months. After some deliberation, we came up with the most logical solution to our predicament: build a surfboard trailer and rack for our bikes and tow everything we owned to live on some stranger’s farm.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

Running the campsite was an angel named Vern, our number-one supporter from the beginning. Although neither of us had ever built anything in our lives – let alone used a power tool – we worked away at making a surfboard trailer out of scrap wood, old bike wheels, and bamboo, as well as a surfboard rack out of PVC piping.

Vern let us use all of his tools and didn’t mind us helping ourselves to any materials we found lying around. He quietly watched as we sawed, tested, put together, took apart, built, and rebuilt. Vern was a well of positivity, never doubting our plans, never criticising or telling us how we should be doing whatever we were doing. His comfortable silence was only broken by his signature words of encouragement, “She’ll be ‘right.”

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Finally, after about a week of building and planning and sorting out what would be coming with us on our bikes and what would be left behind, we set off for the big city. Vern watched proudly as we left the campground, waving goodbye as we nervously pedalled off into the unknown. We only made it about 50 metres before one of the wheels of the surfboard trailer jammed, stopping us dead.

Our resilience was at an all-time high, and we walked our bikes back to the campground, disappointed but not defeated. After an hour of troubleshooting and making some last-minute adjustments, we got the wheels spinning and were on our way again. This time, we were gone for good.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

It felt like we’d seen a lot of the East Coast of New South Wales while we were driving around in Smoko, but being back on the bikes gave us a new perspective on familiar routes. It also introduced us to many we didn’t even know existed. The highway was no place for two kooks and their surfboard rack and trailer, so we kept to the dirt roads, which would often turn to sand or dust or sometimes disappear altogether.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL

On day two of our ride, the path we were following ended at a flowing river. After wading through hip-high water and investigating the trail on the opposite bank, we realised there wasn’t one. Fortunately, a couple of fishermen were happy to help us make our way upstream. We loaded our belongings into their tiny “tinny” boat and flew up the river, where we joined another road that we hoped would take us where we needed to go.

The next day found us pushing our bikes through a sea of sand dunes in the blazing heat. It was here that we met a couple of locals going camping for the weekend. They shared their cold beers with us as we had a yarn – that’s Aussie slang for chat – in a shady patch on the 4WD track.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

Earlier, while unsuccessfully trying to climb a steep section of the road, I’d crashed – twice – and broken our PVC surfboard rack. I mentioned this to our new mates, and to my disbelief, one revealed that he was a plumber and had his tools with him. He fetched them from the back of his truck and mended my DIY board rack right there in the middle of nowhere.

Another day, we waited for low tide to ride our rigs along the beach. We made it most of the way, but when the sand got too thick, a couple of blokes swooped in and helped Nick carry the fully loaded trailer up to the parking lot.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

As the week progressed, the realisation that we might actually make it to Sydney started to sink in. It was almost unfathomable that our ridiculous idea was working. We’d rode across beaches, hopped fences, took boat rides, surfed, and slept wherever we could find a free place to set up our tent. We were on a real adventure. And, despite how many challenges we faced each day – most of them thanks to our makeshift surfboard rack and trailer – help was always waiting whenever and wherever we needed it. I’m sure our situation looked a little desperate to some of the people we ran into, but I felt like we were the luckiest kooks in the world.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

HOME STRETCH

As we neared the city, the empty gravel trails became busy, narrow winding roads and traffic-laden highways. Although we missed the freedom the coastal pathways had provided, this journey had a due date, and our stamina, determination, and willpower were waning. Not to mention our surfboard rack was barely hanging on, and the surfboard trailer was so broken that the wheels were no longer spinning. Nick was literally dragging it behind him. By this point, it was a chaotic masterpiece held together mainly by zap straps, duct tape, and sheer hope. Above all else, the realisation that we were on the very brink of safety and security added a weight to our load that I didn’t think was possible. After all we’d endured, the final kilometres were some of the most challenging.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

Arriving at the door to our “new” residence was an emotional mix of elation and confusion. It felt like we’d been shaken from a dream and woken up not knowing where we were or how we’d got there. Although it was an adjustment at first, I’m forever grateful that we were so warmly welcomed into this new chapter – one that would last much longer than either of us had planned.

Ruby Woodruff, Tour de Kook

After we unpacked our belongings from our bikes and unhitched the trailer, we climbed a rickety ladder into a deteriorating granny flat. Our new home. As I lay on the sunken pullout couch that first night in our “open concept” loft – so open that I’d often wake up to possums eating chocolate off my bedside table – I couldn’t have been happier that our van had blown up. Sure we’d lost our house, job, car, and what little money and stability we had in Australia, but by losing the things that we thought were necessary to build a life, we ended up on the trip of a lifetime.

  • Trivia Although two more The Three Stooges films were planned in the 1970s (with Emil Sitka replacing Larry Fine ), neither came to be, thus making this the final Three Stooges movie. Both Larry Fine and Moe Howard wore their hair "out of character" for this film to emphasize the idea of the Stooges being in retirement.
  • Alternate versions Originally conceived as a TV series, production was halted when Larry Fine suffered a stroke. Years later, existing footage was edited together and released to the 8mm home movie market. Since then, several different edits have been released on video and DVD.

The Kooks (established in 2004) are a British pop-rock foursome from Brighton, UK who boast a very distinct alternative, indie-rock sound.

Arriving on the British indie rock scene in 2006 were vocalist and guitarist Luke Pritchard, lead guitarist and synth player Hugh Harris, drummer Alexis Nunez and bassist Peter Denton (the original bassist was Max Rafferty, who left in 2008 and original drummer Paul Garred was eventually replaced due to a nerve problem in his arm, making him unable to play live).

The four Brighton boys that make up The Kooks joined the likes of the fresh-faced Arctic Monkeys in releasing their debut album in the mid naughties; theirs recorded in Konk studios, London in 2005 and entitled “Inside In/Inside Out.” Although they were a little overshadowed by Arctic Monkey’s simultaneous release and instant success, the album received great critical acclaim and massive chart success in their UK home, eventually securing the number two position in the Albums Chart for two consecutive weeks. The album was also certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and launched their mainstream success, winning them the Best UK and Ireland Act at the 2006 MTV Awards.

Singles from their debut album such as “She Moves in Her Own Way” and “Naïve” broke the top ten in the UK singles chart and achieved success in charts in Europe too. The latter single being covered in Radio One’s Live Lounge sessions by British songstress Lily Allen cemented the band’s wide reaching appeal and demonstrated their strength in song writing skills. With influences like The Rolling Stones, The Strokes and Bob Dylan, this particular skill certainly didn't happen by mistake.

Their second album, “Konk” (named after the studio in which the first and second album were recorded) was released in 2008 and went straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold in the UK and Ireland. Single “Always Where I Need to Be” even achieved chart success in the US, reaching number 22 in the Alternative Songs Billboard chart.

In 2009 The Kooks began working on their third studio album (also recorded on label Virgin Records, as with their preceding albums). However, work was slow and after moving between new producers and writing methods to finally work with producer Tony Hoffer again, front man Pritchard announced in January 2011 that they had finally recorded fourteen tracks. Two months later the release date of 12th September 2011 for “Junk of the Heart” was announced and the album released with a more modern sound than before.

The Kooks then released a new single in April 2014 from their album, “Listen” released the following September. With surprise slots at festivals like Glastonbury, this particular year felt a little like a come back for The Kooks with Pritchard stating himself “that kind of fearlessness when you make the first album kind of crept back in.”

Live reviews

The Kooks are fronted by Luke Pritchard and hail from East Sussex. I found it very surprising they were playing a venue as small as Toads Place. This is a group that's headlined festivals in Europe. For some reason, their sound hasn't translated to similar popularity in the US. Never the less though, they still know how to out on a great show.

The Kooks are on a summer tour in support of their 4th album, entitled Listen. I was late to discovering this album, but it is excellent. The group performed 9 tunes from Listen on the evening, which I was very pleased about. This included opener 'Around Town' to start the show. This got the crowd going from the beginning.

Pritchard really got the crowd into it by playing three of their biggest hits consecutively in the middle of the set. 'Always Where I Need to Be,' 'She Moves in Her Own Way,' and 'Junk of the Heart' all seemed to rattle the old building with some great audience participation.

I believe the best song in the Kooks catalogue is the lead single of Listen - 'Bad Habit.' The audience and backing band members belted out the driving background rhythm, while Pritchard danced and smoothly sang the verses. This is just one example of how dance friendly the album is. No one in the crowd could seem to stand still.

The final song of the night was 'Naive,' giving way to a long ovation for an encore, which I believe turned out to be the best part of the night. Luke first sat at the piano to play of slower tune in 'See Me Now.' This is a very raw number, written and sung by Pritchard to his father. After this emotional ballad, the Kooks turned it up one more time for 'Forgive and Forget' to finish. It was an appropriate closer to a great show!

One of the most surprising and probably best shows of the summer here. Just add the Kooks to the already lengthy list of great bands coming over from England. I'll definitely be on the lookout for them again.

The Kooks. Despite the name, they are anything but kooky. A tried and true band, the Kooks don't need me to tell you they are a good band, but screw that I'll tell you anyway. The Kooks are an awesome-to-the-max band. And with their new upcoming album "Listen", things looks surely to continue at a rampant and amazing pace. With magnificently entertaining songs like "See the World", "Shine On", "Rosie", and "Always Where I Need To Be", the Kooks are an ultimate delight to see live. Deeply satisfying each time a chord is played, and always intriguing when switching from electric to acoustic during songs, you can always feel the 'live' part of the live concert. So yeah, you should really think about seeing them live. Seriously, you should.

But of course, the best selling point of the band is it's frontman and lead singer, Luke Pritchard. A real entertaining character, Pritchard is a natural performer, knowing exactly how to please and sell a crowd. With spectacular dance moves and an intriguing stage persona, Pritchard alone was a delight to watch. And this in a way definitely made everything more awesome. These guys are really a band you will want to rock to, even if you listen to them or not. They have that classic rock feel and vibe, with a modern rock sound. Which turns out to be a stellar combination. The Kooks can be described in many ways, but that will never change the fact their music is among the best. Rock on, Kooks, you deserve it.

Alternating between high energy songs with catchy beats to acoustic sing-alongs is the combination that makes The Kooks so enjoyable no matter if it's a small venue or a huge festival. The Kooks will keep you hooping and swaying with every song change. You'll get excited when Luke grabs his acoustic guitar or when he ditches it all for the mic. No matter what, every time you hear his voice screech you'll want to jump up and touch him. Lead singer Luke Pritchard's voice is what ties all three albums together as The Kooks search for the right mixture of soul, hip-hop and rock. And with new singes like "Down", "Around Town" and "Bad Habit". You can hear the evolution from their first album, raw and Acousticy, to the more Beat and soul driven songs of the new upcoming album. These changes are why fans are excited about their upcoming album. I found The Kooks not from their hit song "Naive" like most people did in 2006 but from there great covers of "Gnarls Barkley - Crazy" and even through all the different changes the band has made throughout the years I think that Luke creative ability has made leaps and bounds since the first album and that is why I keep coming back for more.

I had never even heard of The Kooks before I saw them. I saw them sort of by accident. I was at Glastonbury 2007.

The only band I was excited about when the lineup was released was Arctic Monkeys. I did see them, they were great. But this band, the Kooks, they were something else. I was just walking near the Pyramid Stage and the sound of their set drew me in. It was both exuberant and laid back, which is exactly what I was looking for. I danced around and jammed out to all of their tunes and they were so adorable.

There is just something so sweet about a guy singing his heart out with a cardigan and an acoustic guitar. I didn't know any of their songs, so I didn't know which were the hits but my favorite bit was just as the sun was starting to set. They played this song called Oil. The people around me were big fans and were happy to tell me the name of the song after it was over. By the end of the set, they were my new festival friends. We linked arms and swayed along and they told me everything about the Kooks.

I have seen them 4 times since then and every time has been great but nothing has beaten the first time.

There was a great build up and opening for this gig as a huge curtain covered the stage and ‎the band appeared behind it, their silhouettes playing their instruments before the curtain ‎dropped and they opened up Eddie’s Gun. ‎

The Kooks didn’t let their following down and played all their old hits and the atmosphere ‎was electric all night, I felt they really grew into the show and got better as it went on.‎

The encore of “Around Town”, “Shine On” and of course “Naïve” was sensational as the ‎crowd’s anticipation was met. I sometimes think some of the bands such as The Kooks from ‎that era become victims of the success of their debut albums and their new music doesn’t get ‎the credit it deserves especially given the talent and exposure of new music and new bands ‎around.‎

Take a listen to new songs “Be Who You Are” and the brilliant “Broken Vow” (my personal ‎highlight of the gig) and with new tunes and live performances like this they could get back ‎into the indie elite. ‎

The Kooks concert was AMAZING! I've been a fan of them for about 4 years, but it was the first time I've seen them play live. The concert was a perfect mix of their old and new songs and the crowd was insane. Everybody was dancing and screaming the lyrics. It was great to be surrounded by such hardcore, enthusiastic fans, it really made the night rememberable. Their live performance was awesome. No massive fireworks or anything, just an excellent example of their amazing musical talent. Their music is best described as indie rock, and similarities have been made to Arctic Monkeys and The Killers. If interested, I would recommend their songs; Seaside, Taking Pictures Of You, She Moves In Her Own Way or Eskimo Kiss. The Kooks concert was an amazing night, probably the best concert I've ever been to, and I definatly recommend it to everyone and anyone!! The music is awesome, even better live, insane fans, and it doesn't hurt that the lead singer, Luke Pritchard, is pretty hot.

I'm a fan of The Kooks since 2008~2009, when I first heard them I felt so good, and it has been like this since then. I'm from Brazil and they have played there twice, but I it was not possible for me to go to either of the concerts.

Now I'm currently living in Norway and when Songkick notified me about the concert I felt so so happy, for the first time I would be able to see one of my favourite bands (if not THE favourite one)!

And they didn't let me down, it was amazing, it was wonder! Seeing them so close, singing all the songs that have been making part of my life for around 6 years! It couldn't be better! Awesome concert, from an awesome band and amazing guys! I'm proud being your fan ;)

It was way better than I expected!

I was a big fan of The Kooks for their first three albums. To be honest I do not enjoy their latest album so much. So I went there without a big expectation. Turns out they were incredible.

They are such a great performance everybody was having a really great time. The old songs really bring back memories of me playing their songs with my guitar in my room, brought me goosebumps!

I'm sure someday I'll look back to the day I watched The Kooks and smile.

PS. If you're wondering to watch their show or not, just watch it! Well worth it.

I've been wanting to see The Kooks live since 2008. So, I did not even think it was possible for the show to be as amazing as I had built it up in my mind to be. But,it was. It was easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to and I have been to a lot of concerts.

Go see the Kooks play live! if possible try to see them at a smaller venue. They play their new songs and they play songs from all of their old CDs. They ask for a requests and then they play whatever the crowd is wanting them to play. It was an incredible concert.

The Kooks absolutely blew me away last night. They have been my favorite band for years now and seeing them in person was a very moving and memorable experience for me.

With an excellent set list, The Kooks had the audience all mesmerized by their performance and singing along to every beautiful lyric. The songs chosen for the encore were perfectly selected, drawing the crowd into the performance even more before leaving. Overall, the show was 100% mindblowing and thoroughly enjoyed. Easily one of the happiest nights I can recall.

The Kooks Announce US Tour with The Vaccines

The post The Kooks Announce US Tour with The Vaccines appeared first on Consequence .

The Kooks have announced that they’ll be coming to the United States for “the first time in a long time” for a 16-stop 2024 tour with The Vaccines .

Kicking off on February 29th with a performance in Atlanta, the tour will will take the two beloved British alt bands to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, with The Kooks indicating that they’ll play their seminal debut album, Inside In / Inside Out , in its entirety at each stop in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Watch a video of the band’s Luke Pritchard announcing the tour below.

Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public via Ticketmaster on Friday, October 13th, at 10:00 a.m. local time, following a Live Nation pre-sale which opens on Thursday, October 12th, at 10:00 a.m. local time (use access code VOCALS ). Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

Joining The Kooks for the duration of the tour will be The Vaccines, who are currently gearing up to release their sixth studio album, Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations on January 12th via Thirty Tigers. On Wednesday, October 11th, they shared the album’s latest single, “Sometimes, I Swear,” a cathartic tune that grapples with the deep questions of life, over a soundscape of guitars, of course.

Speaking about the new single, The Vaccines’ lead singer Justin Young said: “Like many songs before it, ‘Sometimes, I Swear’ began life as Tim [Lanham, keyboardist] and I sat on my sofa in London. I don’t think there are many places on the planet where I feel so at peace as sitting in my own home, but even there I constantly question my place in the world. I think the innate human need to be part of something — to connect with each other in a community or a congregation — is what keeps driving us forward and searching for meaning. It’s something many of us struggle with on a daily basis, but I hope when people hear this song they’ll feel less alone in that struggle.” Pre-orders for Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations are ongoing.

The Kooks have announced that they’ll be heading to the United States for a 16-stop 2024 tour with The Vaccines.

Kicking off on February 29 with a performance in Atlanta, the tour will bring the two beloved British bands to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, with The Kooks confirming that they’ll play their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out , in its entirety at each stop in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Watch a video of the band’s Luke Pritchard announcing the tour here .

Inside In/Inside Out is, without a doubt, the best set of anthems for anyone experiencing growing pains. Centered around the complex emotions almost every teenager encounters, The Kooks’ debut album was bound to be a hit. Back when it was first released, a Pitchfork review described the album as “youthful overconfidence” and lacking a sense of direction. This exact sentiment is why the album remains so compelling today.

‘Laughing Stock’: The Timeless Appeal Of Talk Talk’s Final Album

The Kooks released Inside In/Inside Out in January 2006. It was an immediate hit, landing the No.2 spot in the UK Albums Chart for two weeks. The band itself had only formed a year prior to the recording of the album. (Their name came from the group’s mutual admiration for Hunky Dory -era Bowie.) In 2005, they recorded their first demo, focused on landing gigs. But after being scouted at the Brighton Free Butt Festival, they quickly signed to Virgin and recorded their debut album.

Travel Tips to Kabardino-Balkaria: More than Mt. Elbrus!

If you’ve traveled to the North Caucasus before, there is a good chance you’ve already been to Kabardino-Balkaria, and you didn’t even know it!  Kabardino-Balkaria lies in the center of the North Caucasus region, is home to Mt. Elbrus, but more than that is a treasure chest of travel possibilities.  Here is our guide to traveling through the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, or 9 travel tips to this beautiful land:

1. How do I get there?

Kabardino-Balkaria hosts a large number of both foreign and Russian travelers every year, and has an improving infrastructure able to handle the incoming masses.  Let’s start with the obvious.  You might be a mountain climber or skier coming to enjoy the slopes of Mt. Elbrus.  That means you’re likely arriving on an airplane to Russia.  Here are your travel options:

A. Plane – We advise you fly into the Mineralni Vodi (MRV) airport in the Stavropol Region, which is about 45 minutes from the border of Kabardino-Balkaria.  MRV is the largest airport in the North Caucasus, and has daily direct flights to and from all 3 airpots in Moscow (SVO, DME, and VKO), direct flights from St. Petersburg, and several international flight routes as well, including from Istanbul, Dubai, Greece, Tel Aviv, and Bishkek.  The MRV airport has a growing infrastructure and is the most obvious choice to fly into if going to Elbrus.  From MRV, it’s a 2 hr. drive to Nalchik, and a 3.5 hr. drive to Mt. Elbrus.

That being said, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, Nalchik (NAL), also has a small regional airport with a daily flight to/from Moscow as well as weekly flights to Istanbul. As is to be expected in most smaller, regional airports around Russia, the service standard at a small airport like this will be minimal.  As a result, we recommend you flying in and out of MRV if able.  It’s a 2 hr. drive to Elbrus from Nalchik.  You can also fly into other regional airports which are 2 hrs. from Nalchik, such as OGZ in North Ossetia (Vladikavkaz) or IGT in Ingushetia (Magas).

B.  Car/Public Transport – If you have a car, are using a taxi, or are hitch-hiking your way to Kabardino-Balkaria, the region is accessible by a variety of roads and vehicles.  A major Russian federal highway E50 runs through Pyatigorsk into Kabardino-Balkaria, and can take you towards Mt. Elbrus, Nalchik, and deeper into the North Caucasus.  There are daily mini-buses, or “marshrutkas”, that travel to Nalchik from Pyatigorsk, Vladikavkaz, Grozny, and Magas, if you’re coming from a neighboring republic.  From the main Nalchik bus station, there is a marshrutka that goes to Terskol (i.e. Mt. Elbrus) daily around 12:30 pm; for that matter,  marshrutkas run daily into every valley of this beautiful republic.  For the seasoned international traveler, you can drive from the country of Georgia up the famed “Georgian Military Highway” through the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, cross the border into Russia at the “Verkhni Lars” border stop, and be in Nalchik in about 2.5 hours as well.

tour de kook

Anyone traveling on their own should download the “Yandex” taxi app, which is Russia’s version of Uber, and has a very user-friendly app with affordable prices.  In smaller villages/towns where Yandex’s service doesn’t reach, just ask a local and they’ll direct you to a friend or relative who can taxi you where you need to go!

C.  Train – Kabardino-Balkaria is also very accessible by the famous cross-country Russian train system if that’s your preferred method of travel.  Almost all trains to the North Caucasus pass through Mineralni Vodi in the Stavropol region to the north, so make sure wherever you are coming from, Mineralni Vodi is one of the stops.  Despite Nalchik having a train station, the city is about 45 minutes from the main railway route that runs diagonal through the North Caucasus, and as a result it’s a bit convoluted to get a train directly to Nalchik.  That being said, the town Prokhladni is a regular stop on trains going to/coming from Baku, Makhachkala, Grozny, Nazran, and Vladikavkaz, so you can always hop off there and find your way by public transport or taxi.

2.  What are the best places to stay?

This list could get exhaustive, fast. 🙂  Let’s first look at an overview of the republic’s geography, followed by hotel recommendations:

A. Nalchik – This is the capital city of Kabardino-Balkaria, with a population of around 250,000.  Nalchik is growing and new, modern hotels are being built regularly.  Here are some of our recommendations:

-Modern and comfortable:  Azimut , Butik Otel

-Budget with less frills:  Hotel Rossia , Korona

You could comfortably spend a week in Nalchik, while doing day trips into Kabardino-Balkaria’s beautiful mountain valleys.

B.  Baksan Valley – This is the most traveled road in Kabardino-Balkaria, the road to Mt. Elbrus.  If you have questions about its safety because of travel warnings, please see our detailed blog here of the drive to erase any doubts or fears.  Needless to say, because of the draw of Mt. Elbrus, there are a huge variety of lodging options at the end of this valley, from 4-star to mid-range to budget to hostel.  Here are just a few we’ll recommend from our experience:

-Modern and comfortable 4-star-ish:  Azau Star , Kristall 139

-Budget with less frills 3-star-ish:   Laguna , Povorot

If you’re a mountain climber with your sites set on the summit of Elbrus, you’ll have to spend at least 3-4 nights at Elbrus’s famous base camp at 13,000 feet.  The “barrel huts” are not easy to book directly with, and we highly recommend you do your climb (and hence, have your bookings handled) through a trusted climbing company.  Here are two shelters at base camp we recommend:

-Modern and comfortable:  Leaprus

-Budget with less frills:  Heart of Elbrus Lodge

If you’re interested in climbing Mt. Elbrus and staying in these barrel huts, click  here  to see our climbing itineraries, pricing, and group dates.

C.  Chegem Valley – Chegem Valley is the adjacent valley to Elbrus’s Baksan Valley, and is famous for its beautiful waterfalls as well as being Russia’s top paragliding location.  The “ Paradrome ” has modest accommodations for those wanting to get to know this beautiful valley for a longer period of time.

tour de kook

D.  Upper Balkaria, or Cherek Valley – This is another beautiful mountain gorge not too far from Nalchik.  There is an authentic lodging complex in Upper Balkaria called Tau-El, with amazing local food for meals as well.

tour de kook

E.  Border Zone lodging – Several of Kabardino-Balkaria’s mountain gorges run into the border zone with neighboring country Georgia, i.e. an area that foreigners cannot enter without a special permit from the local government (often taking 2 months to receive).  There is a famous mountaineering lodge in Bezengi Valley, where several generations of Russian mountain climbers have honed their craft in the Caucasus Mountains.  Perpendicular to Baksan Valley (about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus) is Adyr-Suu Valley, where there is a lodge for back-country skiers to stay, while trying their hands (and feet!) on the untouched snow of that valley.  Both these valleys require border permits for foreigners, but are possible to access for the more adventurous!

3.  Top cities to visit?

Most locals would agree that Nalchik is the main city of significance to visit in Kabardino-Balkaria, but let’s be honest, even more would say, “Just go to the mountains!”  Tirnauz is the capital of the Elbrus district, and is an interesting town to spend some time in, with its unique location in the mountains and place in Soviet history as a once-booming mining town.  The main thing to consider in visiting Nalchik and other cities in the lowlands, is the chance to experience Kabardian culture and food.  Whereas the deeper you go into the valleys, the more you’ll encounter Balkar culture and food.

4.  Best local foods to try?

There are 3 types of food that come to mind, when spending time in Kabardino-Balkaria:

A. Khychiny – This is one of the staple national dishes of the Balkar people, and what you’ll inevitably be served if guests of local Balkars.  It’s a thin buttery flat bread, sometimes cooked with fillings of cottage cheese, fresh greens, or potatoes.  It is often slathered in butter, but wow is that some tasty greasy goodness! 🙂

tour de kook

B.  Shashlik – Shashlik is a MUST for any visit anywhere in the North Caucasus!  Most people would agree that it’s the national food of the entire region.  Shashlik is meat shish kabobs; while pork and turkey can be found in some parts of the Caucasus, lamb or chicken are the preferred shashlik meats of choice in Kabardino-Balkaria.

C.  Soup – No matter where you are in Russia, you’re sure to find a local soup that people love.  Kabardino-Balkaria is no different.  Especially in the winter months in the mountain valleys, there’s nothing better than to come inside from the cold weather and warm your body up to a bowl of hearty Caucasus soup.  Whether Georgian kharcho or local Balkar lakhman, make sure to try your hand at one of these soups with a side of fresh baked bread/lavash!

5.  Top Hole-In-The-Wall restaurants:

Of course, for a republic of this size, we’re bound to leave at least a few great local joints off our list, but here are a few to get you started. ***Note:  Restaurants in the North Caucasus are much better known for their food than their service, so prepare for tasty food, but manage your expectations about service:

-Elbrus – Kogutai Restaurant at Mt. Cheget – While this isn’t a hole-in-the-wall restaurant per se, it’s one of many to choose from in the Cheget tourist village, and we have found them to provide consistently good food and service.  Kogutai has a nice interior, and maybe most important, an English-language menu with good pictures. 🙂  There also is a nice outdoor patio with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

-Nalchik #1 – Tameris Restaurant – This is a cafe with a relaxed atmosphere in the capital Nalchik.  Local tour company Elbrus Elevation has taken foreign groups there on multiple occasions and always had good experiences.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 3.

-Nalchik #2 – Cafe-Bar Oasis – You have to know where this restaurant is to find it, but once inside, you won’t regret it!  There is a unique cafeteria-style ordering process, that includes several dishes being cooked on the spot once ordered.  You can sample local Kabardian dishes here.  The seating area is very modern and a pleasant atmosphere to have a meal in.  Address is ul. Kuliyeva 2.

-Upper Balkaria – Tau-El Restaurant – This is the restaurant part of the Tau-El Tourist Complex in Upper Balkaria.  Whether spending the night or just passing through, make sure to stop here for a meal!

6.  Must-See Sites

This republic is so chock full of “must-see” destinations, it’s impossible to narrow the list down.  Here are just a few suggestions to get you started: (***Mt. Elbrus is a no-brainer and we’re assuming that’s on your list)

A. El-Tyubu and Paradrome – This is an amazing area towards the end of Chegem Valley.  Many tourists visit the famous Chegem Waterfalls and don’t drive any further down this gorge, which really is a shame.  El-Tyubu is a picturesque Balkar village with several historical sites to see, including some ancient mausoleums.  The real gem of the area, though, is the Paradrome , which is Russia’s premier paragliding destination.  The combination of the scenic surrounding mountains and constant winds produces almost daily conditions to sail through the beautiful Caucasus sky.  Highly recommend!

tour de kook

B.  Upper Balkaria – Also known as Cherek Valley, the entire drive to the actual village of Upper Balkaria is one big destination.  First, you can spend time at the 3 consecutive “ Blue Lakes ”, one of which is one of Russia’s deepest lakes with an underground spring.  Then, the drive itself becomes an adventure, as you pass by steep rock walls with a huge drop-off on the other side.  If you’re able to walk this part of the road, that is a bonus!  Once you’ve made your way through the valley walls, the region opens up into a beautiful panoramic view.  Many years ago, there were multiple villages in this region, but they’ve since been condensed into one main village.  You can see some of the ancient Balkar towers that their ancestors used to live in as well.

C.  Djili-Suu – Although hard to pronounce and not easy to get to, Djili-Suu is one of those places in the North Caucasus that people rave about that you “have to” visit.  It’s actually on the North side of Mt. Elbrus, and more accessible from the Mineral Waters region (2 hrs. from Kislovodsk).  The base camp for Elbrus climbers summiting the mountain from the North side is at Djili-Suu.  This area is famous in Russia for its numerous natural healing springs, as well as unique climate conditions that make for beneficial, long holidays for seeking a respite from their daily grind.  There are wide swaths of land available for camping, with probably the most unrivaled views of Mt. Elbrus in the North Caucasus.  Make sure to check this out!

7.  Off-the-beaten path destinations

tour de kook

A. King’s Waterfalls (Tsarskie), or Gedmisht – Probably the valley in Kabardino-Balkaria with the least amount of hype is the Malka Valley, which is the northernmost valley and mainly runs through the Kabardian lowlands.  At the point where the villages end, though (Khabas), the asphalt turns into dirt and the hills start to rise, culminating with the incredible King’s Waterfalls, or as one friend put it, Avatar Waterfalls.  These stunning waterfalls are best visited in the early summer, when everything is lush green and the water flow is strong, with many streams of water flowing down the earth’s surface.  The different colors are incredible and it’s hard to look away.  Once you’ve enjoyed the waterfalls, enjoy a meal of shashlik at one of the nearby lunch huts.  Having an off-road vehicle is ideal to visit these falls, but worth the time and effort!

B.  One-seater chair lift at Elbrus – As the infrastructure at Mt. Elbrus has modernized, some of the more “authentic” experiences have gone to the way-side.  This is one experience still available, though!  From the 2nd (11,000 ft.) to 3rd level (12,500 ft.) of Mt. Elbrus (whether skiing, going to base camp, or just touring), there is a single-seater chair lift for 100 rubles each way (less than $2).  This is an amazing experience if you have the time.  It’s 8-10 minutes each way, and a surreal experience of the majestic Caucasus mountain range surrounding you, skiers silently passing you by underneath, and in general enjoying the silent expanse of nature all around.  The chair lifts are from the Soviet times and so it feels like something from a different era.  For mountain climbers, the newer group cable car gives better access to most of base camp, but several huts are pretty close to this chair lift, so it still may be a good option for you.

C.  Abandoned Mines above Tirnauz – Tirnauz is about 1 hr. from Mt. Elbrus, and a town everyone drives through to and from the mountain.  Although today it looks old and half-abandoned, it was a booming mining town in the 20th century.  About a 45-minute drive above the city with an off-road vehicle, you can see the remains of the mining operations.  Learning about this history combined with the breath-taking views of the Baksan Valley and even into Georgia, you’ll wonder why more people aren’t visiting this place.  This is a great spot to see eagles soaring in the sky, as well as admire the Soviet city plan of Tirnauz from above.

8.  What do I need border zone passes to visit?

In Russia, any area within 5-10 km of a neighboring country, without a clearly delineated border (i.e. in the mountains) is considered a special border zone, and patrolled by Russian border guards.  This area IS accessible to all Russian citizens with their passports, but is NOT legally accessible to foreign citizens UNLESS you have a special permit from the FSB (Federal Security Bureau).  These permits are accessible, either through a tour operator or local friend, but require you to submit your application 45-60 days in advance.

Areas in Kabardino-Balkaria that are worth a visit if you have a border zone pass:

A.  Bezengi Wall – This is at the end of the Bezengi Valley, and holds a place of lore among Russian mountain climbers.  Many mountain guides go through training in this valley.  Five of the Caucasus Mountain’ range’s highest seven peaks are a part of the Bezengi Wall, so you can imagine the draw it has for climbers. There are great areas for trekking and camping in this area.

B.  Adyr-Suu Gorge – This remote valley runs perpendicular to Baksan Valley and is about 25 minutes from the base of Mt. Elbrus.  It’s marked at the entrance by a relic of the past, a car lift from Soviet days that auto-cranks your car (and you) about 50 meters up the mountain.  After 45-60 minutes of driving on gravel road, the gorge opens up into a flat valley with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.  The Adyr-Suu Alpine Lodge is at the end of this valley and where back-country skiers base out of during the acclimatization phase of their Mt. Elbrus ski tours.  This is truly a place where you can experience untouched powder!

tour de kook

C.  Mt. Cheget (Elbrus) – Cheget is a neighboring mountain to Mt. Elbrus and where many climbers will acclimatize, both at its base and while doing some hikes.  It also is famous in Russia for its free-ride terrain for more experienced skiers.  Standard access to the chair lifts and mountain are available to all (i.e. mountain climbers don’t need to worry about accidentally crossing into the zone), but anyone wanting to summit the peak of Cheget OR visit the beautiful Cheget Lake needs a border permit.

tour de kook

Foreigners violating the border zone areas is considered a serious offense in Russia; make sure to do your due diligence if wanting to visit one of these areas!  We highly recommend using a local tour operator and always traveling with a local person if visiting one of these areas.

9.  Any cultural “do’s” or “don’t’s” to be aware of

tour de kook

Kabardino-Balkaria is a fascinating republic with a combination of traditional and modern society.  The more you interact with local people, the more you’ll see a mixture of Muslim faith, post-Soviet mentality, and ancient local traditions all wrapped together.

Kabardians mainly live in the lowlands (Nalchik, Baksan, and lowland villages), while Balkars primarily live in the mountain valleys (Elbrus, Chegem, Upper Balkaria, etc.).  There is a large population of Russians in the region as well.  Foreigners visit every area of the region regularly, and so local people are used to and will welcome your presence.

Come with an open mind to learn about these peoples, their traditions, and their land.  You won’t regret your trip to Kabardino-Balkaria!

Visiting Russia - Nalchik, Capital of Kabardino-Balkaria

By Koryo Tours

Nalchik, capital of Kabardino-Balkaria

Visiting Russia – Nalchik

Yoshkar-ola | cheboksary  |  astrakhan | elista | stalingrad (volograd)  | abakan  |  nalchik  | validkavkaz  | makhachkala  |  grozny.

Nalchik is a small city of around 240,000 people and serves as the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, one of the lesser-known republics spread across the beautiful North Caucasus area of Russia, the mountain range that separates the former soviet states of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan from the Russian Federation.

This region has incredible diversity in ethnic groups and is a melting pot at the edge of empire. While there have been civilisations in the Caucasus for millennia Nalchik as a city is only a century old, having been a Russian fort since 1724. Today’s Nalchik is a mostly peaceful and relaxing place, being in the foothills of the mountains it has many areas of great beauty and multiple sanatoria for people looking to take the waters, over the last century it has certainly had its share of turbulence though, being occupied by Romanian troops fighting on the side of the Nazis, who embarked on an effort to exterminate the ancient community of Mountain Jews in the area (unsuccessfully), plus a 2005 Islamic militant attack on Russian security forces.

These days Nalchik is known as a clean city, a place for relaxing, and the starting point of expeditions to summit Mt. Elbrus, the tallest mountain in Europe, which lies within Kabardino-Balkaria.

Kabardians make up the largest ethnic group at just under 50% of the city’s population, followed by Russians, Balkars, other Caucasian nationalities as well as Ukrainians, Mountain Jews still live in the area but in very small numbers now, most having emigrated to Israel.

Nalchik

Arriving/Departing

Nalchik Airport (NAL) is a small one but is fully functional for getting in and out, usually the foreigners arriving here will be mountaineers heading for Elbrus.

The Airport is only 3km from the city centre so you could even walk into town from here, otherwise, there are taxis and marshrutkas waiting for arrivals. Flights arrive only from Moscow and St. Petersburg usually, the Caucasus has other larger airports for other international flights (such as those to Sochi). Nalchik has a railway station, dating from 1915, with links to Moscow and across the Caucasus. A good option for travelling around the region in a relaxing manner (usually slower than taking a marshrutka between cities though) For getting around inside Nalchik there are public buses all over the place, easy to use and very cheap. Otherwise most of the centre is very walkable, the main ‘high street’ is Lenin Avenue, which runs for several km through the centre of the city.

Nalchik

Concord Square

The centre of Nalchik and a good place to start a walking tour of the city, with the Kabardino-Balkaria parliament building on one side and Lenin stands at the other, fountains in the middle and Lenin Avenue cutting through the square

Religious Buildings

The central buildings of the main religions practised in Nalchik are both fine examples of their respective architectural styles; the Central Mosque and the Cathedral of Mary Magdalene are both worth visiting. Dress codes apply.

Not actually in Nalchik, but only 50km or so away so the city is the ideal base for starting an expedition. This is Europe’s highest mountain and a dormant volcano. There are cable car/chairlift options to get t the top for those who don’t wish to do it the hard way. It is possible to get up and down this mountain n a single day, making it certainly the simplest of the 7 continental highest peaks to climb.

Museum of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic

Great for explaining where you are and the history of the area. Mostly in Russian only though and does tend to assume some knowledge in advance. Still a good stop to get some intro into the complex history of this city and area in general.

Atazhukin Garden

A large park complex running for more than 2km along the eastern side of the city, alongside the Nalchik River. A very pleasant place with so much to see and do. The basic Nalchik Zoo is here, walking trails, restaurants and cafes, theatres, a very retro funfair, and a rickety but reliable cable car running up to a lovely viewpoint to see over the city and out to Mt. Elbrus.

Topped by a restaurant building built in the shape of a Kabardian warrior. An excellent few hours can be spent exploring this park and mingling with the locals of all ages who do their relaxing here.
