How to Travel from Dubai to Muscat, Oman via Public Bus Transport

In previous posts, we have shared about how you can travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi , Sharjah , Fujairah , and other emirates via public bus transport. Today, we are going to take things further by discussing how you can commute from Dubai to a neighbouring country… the Sultanate of Oman!

You heard that right! Did you know that there’s a bus route from Dubai to Muscat, the capital of Oman? So while it may sound much easier (not to mention faster) to reach Muscat by plane, taking the scenic route by bus sounds more exciting, don’t you think? Keep on reading to learn more about this bus route!

Bus Ticket Prices from Dubai to Oman

Since January last year, people have been able to travel between Dubai and Muscat via Bus Route Number 201. This was made possible due to a partnership between Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Oman’s National Transport Company, Mwasalat.

Mwasalat happens to own the largest fleet of buses in Oman, with more than 500 buses including mini buses, low floor buses, super luxury coaches, and long-distance coaches.

The partnership between RTA and Mwasalat falls under the former’s launching of new bus routes across the UAE and beyond. As part of their agreement in opening a Dubai-Muscat route, new bus stations and routes between the two places had been added.

As a result, there is now a convenient bus route that citizens, residents, and visitors can use to travel easily between Dubai and Muscat! These include tourists as well as business executives who often travel between the two destinations.

The cost of a one-way bus ticket from Dubai to Oman is AED 55, while a round-trip ticket costs AED 90. You will need to buy your tickets directly from the RTA stand. In the future though, passengers will be able to book their bus tickets online or by using their Nol Card to purchase tickets.

The Dubai-Oman bus route runs three times a day, departing from the following stations at these timings (with 15-minute stops at each station):

• Abu Hail Bus Station — 7:30 am, 3:30 pm, and 11:00 pm
• Dubai Airport Terminal 2 — 7:45 am, 3:45 pm, and 11:15 pm
• Rashidiya Bus Station — 8:00 am, 4:00 pm, and 11:30 pm

The travel time between Dubai to Oman is around six hours, including stops between stations as well as custom checking at the UAE-Oman border. Of course, keep in mind that traffic conditions may make the travel period longer.

Upon reaching Oman, the bus route will pass by 11 stops before reaching the border. Notably, you can catch a bus from Oman to Dubai via these stops:

• Muscat Airport
• Burj Al Sahwa

From Sohar, or any other station in Muscat, a one-way bus ticket to Dubai costs OMR 5.5, while a round trip ticket costs OMR 9. The Sohar-Dubai bus departs at 6:20 am, 3:20 pm, and 11:00 pm. Please visit the Mwasalat website or call their office at +971-425-25909 for more details.

You’d be happy to know that the public bus from Dubai to Muscat is air-conditioned, offers free Wi-Fi access, and can seat up to 50 passengers. In other words, you can look forward to a safe and comfortable bus experience… not to mention beautiful views of the countryside along the way!

Another great thing about this bus route is that it stops at three bus stations within the UAE, making it easier for you to take the Metro or hail a taxi in case you need one!

Aside from the public bus route mentioned above, there are other buses between Dubai and Muscat, including those that are operated by private transport companies. For instance, there’s Al Khanjry buses, which depart at 6:00 am and 3:00 pm every day. You can catch this bus beside the Ruwi Bus Station in Muscat. This route makes only one stop in Sohar, where you can grab a bite or even do some shopping!

• Before you travel between the two countries ( i.e. UAE to Oman), be sure to take care of your visa requirements first.
• It’s best to arrive early at the bus station, at least 30 minutes before departure.
• At the UAE-Oman border, there’s an exit fee of AED 35 per head. Don’t forget to set aside this amount, make the payment, and keep your receipt!
• Along the border, the bus will stop at UAE customs, where you will get your exit stamp. Later, the bus will stop again at Oman customs, where everyone’s luggage will be checked.
• For a trouble-free trip, make sure you don’t bring any restricted or banned items !

Once you arrive in Oman, you’ll soon discover that aside from the capital city of Muscat, there are plenty of amazing places to visit in the Sultanate, including:

• Bahla , a historic city in northern Oman that includes a 13th century fort;
• Jebel Akhdar , also known as the Green Mountain and part of Al Hajar Mountains;
• Masirah Island , which is known for its gorgeous beaches and wildlife;

DUBAI TO OMAN BUS SERVICE – AN OVERVIEW

In 2019, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Oman’s National Transport Company Mwasalat, resumed the 201 route of Dubai RTA Bus to Muscat. A signed agreement between the two entities added new bus stations and routes connecting the two destinations. 

This development came as part of a series of new bus routes across the country by the RTA, which adds to the convenience of travellers who wish to explore the region. Of course, this also benefits those who travel between the countries for business dealings. 

With the 201 bus service, Dubai Public Transport allows locals and tourists to benefit from another alternative that suits their budget and preferences. The service was briefly halted during the pandemic but has been fully operational lately.

Let’s look at the timings, tickets and routes for the bus from Dubai to Oman.

DUBAI TO OMAN BUS TICKET PRICES

A one-way Dubai to Oman by bus ticket price is AED 55.

Likewise, the bus fare from Dubai to Oman round-trip is AED 90.

Also, remember that you must pay an exit fee at the UAE border, AED 35 per person. Do keep this receipt handy.

The bus for Oman departs thrice a day from three bus stations. Dubai to Oman bus timings and stops are as follows .

Once you reach Oman, the bus route will cover 11 stops before crossing the border. You can also catch an Oman to Dubai bus from these stops .

WHO CAN TRVAEL TO OMAN FROM DUBAI VIA BUS?

Citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries can travel to Oman from Dubai. They only require a National ID card to visit Oman. The GCC countries are:

Please note that if you’re not a GCC citizen, you must apply for a visa to travel to Oman.

A bonus feature of taking a bus trip to Oman is the scenic view of the countryside. This gets even more pleasant the farther north in Oman you get.

OTHER BUSES FROM DUBAI TO OMAN

You can also take buses operated by private transport companies to and from Dubai and Muscat. These include Al Khanjry buses you can catch right next to the Ruwi bus station in Muscat. The journey from Muscat commences at 06:00 am, whereas the return trip from Dubai starts at 03:00 pm daily.

What is it like going the bus from Dubai to Muscat? Is it possible to get a bus from Dubai to Oman or vice versa? The answer is yes and here is the 100% honest guide to getting to Oman and back again by bus by someone who has actually done it .

So you’ll know what it’s really like going to Oman by bus and how to do it. Whether you’re wanting to visit Oman or need to do a visa run with a trip, your detailed guide is below!

Oman has recently announced big tourist visa changes so some of the previous bus services may start running again. I’ll update the article accordingly if they do.

So there was previously a mixture of private companies and the Omani government running buses between Dubai and Oman before 2020. The Omani government service called Mwasalat Route 201 is currently not operating so you’ll need to go with a private company instead. Currently, the main private provider is Al Khanjry Transport .

Before you travel to Oman

Do you need to buy a ticket for the bus in advance.

No, you do not need to buy a bus ticket in advance. You can simply turn up to the office and buy before your journey. Sadly it is not possible to buy online.

However, if the bus is fully booked you’ll have to wait till the next available bus. Since fewer operators are now doing the Dubai to Muscat route, the buses do get fuller. So it’s advisable to either get there early before the journey or to visit the office to buy your bus ticket in advance.

There are quite a few complaints online that they aren’t great at responding and like many companies in the Middle East, they don’t seem to like answering the phone.

How do I get to the Dubai ticket office?

Head to Al Rigga or Deira Centre metro and walk to Al Khanjry Dubai office. It’s about a 10/15 minute walk.

For an RTA bus, you’ll need to get off at the Ministry of Environment bus stop which is less than a 5 minute walk away.

On both journeys, there were spare seats and I chose to buy a return ticket since you can use the return at any time.

Dubai to Muscat bus ticket price

The bus is 100 AED (10 OMR) each way.

When I travelled, Masawalat was still operating and it was 55 AED (5.5 OMR) one way or 90 AED for a return as it was run by the Omani government. The return was an open return and valid for any time. However sadly this bus stopped running and there is no news if the Omani government will restart the service.

As of now, this journey is still not back in operation. Though the private companies do seem to have nicer buses so it can be worth paying extra.

This is by far the biggest advantage of travelling by bus. It’s most definitely the cheapest way to go from Dubai to Oman!

Where does the Dubai bus to Oman leave from?

The bus leaves from the same location as the ticket office, they recommend getting there 30 minutes before your journey in case of any delays. If you need to buy your ticket, it’s best to get there at the recommended time or earlier. If you already have a ticket and only a small amount of luggage, then you can leave it closer to the departure time.

Dubai to Muscat bus times

There are 3 buses a day at the following times:

You are advised to get there half an hour before the bus departs. Once in Muscat, you can either get off at Al Seeb by the airport or closer to the centre at the final stop. Depending on where you are staying.

If you’re one of those people who can sleep on a bus, I would recommend the 9 pm bus from Dubai to Muscat. You’ll save money on a hotel and get into Muscat in the early hours of the morning. This will give you a whole day to explore the beauty of Muscat.

Dubai to Oman bus duration

It took me around 8 to go by bus from Muscat to Dubai including stopping at immigration and security, where everyone needed to get off the bus and have their documents stamped. You also will have all your luggage checked off the bus.

Dubai to Muscat is usually a little bit shorter and took me 7 hours including the same procedures on the way back. They advertise to be 6 hours but it is extremely unlikely that you’ll do the entire journey in this time so I would say to plan for 8 hours to be safe.

Do I need a visa for Oman?

Yes, you need a visa however the good news is, you can get the visa on arrival for the majority of countries.

You can apply online via the Omani government website if you choose, but in all honesty, this may actually complicate things. I have in the past, paid for a visa and then at the airport had trouble with accessing the visa as they seem to be more used to people doing it on arrival.

How much does the Oman tourist visa cost?

Over 100 nationalities can now get a tourist visa on arrival for stays up to 14 days free of charge and you can pay for longer if you choose. You will need to have your return ticket, accommodation and funds ready before arriving in Oman. However, these are not always checked but are best to have in case you do need to prove them.

If you require a longer visa; you can pay 20 OMR (200 AED) for a month-long visa. There are also year-long multiple entry visas available.

If you are a UAE or GCC resident; it costs 5 OMR (50 AED). This is a 28 day visa. Check eligibility here .

Is Oman safe?

Whether you’re a family or a female solo traveller. Oman is incredibly safe and has very similar safety to the United Arab Emirates. Omanis are very helpful and crime rates are very low for the country as a whole. I’ve travelled a lot in Oman as a solo female traveller and not once felt in danger.

The Journey from Dubai to Muscat by Bus and back again

Where does the bus stop.

The first main stop from Dubai is at the border, you have to walk into the passport office and get your exit stamp from Dubai. Then they’ll drive you further down and you’ll get your visa for Oman from the Omani passport office. Finally, everyone is made to get off the bus and all luggage is checked before exiting the border control area. For more details about this process see below.

After the border, there are three main stops in Oman however it does stop at quite a few others places in between. The three main stops on the bus from Dubai to Muscat are Sohar, Seeb and Muscat. Sohar bus station involves a short break.

As a quick guide, Sohar is a lovely seaside town that is perfect for relaxing plus it is close to the border to Dubai. Seeb is just outside of Muscat with some popular places near including the trendy hangout “The Wave” and Muscat airport.

If you want somewhere to stay in Muscat, Seeb is great for less expensive hotels while still being close to Muscat.

The final stop is close to central Muscat. However, the key Muscat tourist sites are pretty spread out so you’ll either need a car to enjoy what Muscat has to offer or to take a tour as the government-run public buses are a little patchy. They do also have the big hop-on, hop-off tourist buses now which has made getting around Muscat easier!

What is the journey like by bus from Dubai to Muscat?

It is long! On the way there it took 7 hours and 8 hours on the way back but it can take longer if the bus is full. This is due to all the passengers needing to go through passport control. The bus is advertised as 6 hours but it is very unlikely to take this time.

The bus itself is relatively comfortable, there is wifi available but I’ve found it isn’t always working. Also charging points and USB points aren’t usually working either. So it’s best to take a power bank with you just in case to charge any devices.

On the way there, the bus air con was left on and got too cold during the night part of the journey. On the way back, the heating was turned on during the night portion and it was like being in a Dubai summer . Despite taking my jacket off it was still sweltering! However, the journey in the day was comfortable with the air conditioning on. So I advise sticking to the daytime if you’re travelling in the winter months.

If you take the 9 pm bus, you arrive in the early hours of the morning in Dubai or Muscat. So you’ll need to keep this in mind in terms of cost, as you may need to pay for a taxi to get to your final destination unless you’re happy to wait for when the metro or buses start.

On both journeys, I found there were spare seats. Also, one thing to note, it’s common on buses in the gulf for the front section to be dedicated to women and children. Especially if the bus is busy.

How to exit to Oman from UAE

You pay an exit fee of 35 AED no matter where you exit Dubai via a land crossing. You can pay by cash or card. A small fee is added for using card payment. This involves queuing and then entering an office to pay any fines plus getting your passport stamped. You then come back out, get back onto the bus and drive to a point where they check your luggage.

Once this section is completed you board back onto the bus and drive to the Oman checkpoint. This involves once again disembarking from the bus, going into the office and queueing for your Omani tourist visa. Oman has now released free tourist visas for over 100 countries.

To gain the visa you simply present your passport and fill out a small form. If you’re from a country that still needs to pay, card machines are available and I wasn’t charged a fee for using my card previously.

How to exit to Dubai from Oman

The process is exactly the same, just in reverse. Everyone on the coach must get off and get their exit stamp. Then you will get back on and drive a bit further to the Dubai passport office. The final step is the luggage being inspected before they let you leave the border control area.

For Oman there is no exit fee, just requiring the exit stamp in the passport.

Do I advise you to go by bus from Dubai to Muscat?

If you’re going to Sohar and plan to hire a car when you get there, the bus is an amazing and affordable option.

If you’re going to Muscat, then it really depends on what is your priority. If you’re looking for comfort or you need to save time, I would advise paying extra to fly. It is a long time to be sat on a bus with no bathrooms and flying can take as little as 3 hours in total from the airport to leaving with your luggage.

If saving money is your main priority and you don’t mind sacrificing a little bit of comfort along with quite a lot of time. Then the bus is definitely the best option for you.

If you drove instead of a bus, the journey is roughly 5 hours by car in comparison to the bus, where it took me around 8 to go by bus from Muscat to Dubai. Dubai to Muscat is usually a little bit shorter and took me 7 hours.

Other tips and information for taking the Bus to Oman

Taking alcohol from dubai to oman via the land crossing is illegal.

Regardless of which mode of transport you take, you can only take alcohol to Muscat via the airport and not via the land borders. They do check luggage at the border, so it isn’t worth the risk.

What to pack for the Dubai to Oman bus

Make sure to take a jacket, snacks and water for the journey! It will save you a lot of money. There is a shop at the border when you cross and a duty free but prices seemed to be increased compared to getting items from a supermarket or corner shop.

Bathroom and food breaks

There are bathrooms at the border controls which are part way through the journey, this is where I would highly recommend going the bathroom as they are cleaner and better maintained. There is also a cafe in the Omani passport control building if you want some warm food.

Sohar has public bathrooms close by and the bus does stay here a little longer to enable you to go the bathroom if you need it. Otherwise, for the rest of the journey, the stops are very short and do not allow passengers to go to the toilet and the buses do not have a toilet onboard. Sohar is also best for you to have a small walk and stretch your legs before continuing the journey.

Dubai Duty Free from Oman to Dubai

There is a small shop on the Dubai side where you can pick up duty free items on your way back to Dubai from Oman with sweets typically found at the airport and of course alcohol.

If you’re visiting the Omani Peninsula or trying to do a visa run from Dubai

If you decide to drive, use the Dubai bus visa run services or take a tour through the Ras Al Khaimah border into the Omani peninsula, this is done in a single office for exiting the UAE. Also at the Ras Al Khaimah crossing you can walk between the Oman and Dubai offices.

This is different to the Hatta crossing, where you will need to drive between the two in addition to having your luggage checked which takes time. So if you’re planning a visa run, driving to RAK although it adds approximately 30 to 40 minutes to your journey compared to Hatta, it’s likely you’ll save this time not waiting at the border and having to drive between the two crossings. It also saves you the hassle of car insurance for Oman.

Time wise, it’s likely the journey will take you between 7 to 8 hours. Plus any additional journeys you need to make to home or a hotel either side. Oman is far less developed when it comes to public transport. If you’re able to, I’d advise to hire a car or take a tour . The bus is an affordable and convenient option.

If you’re a family or there’s a group of you, it would most likely work out better to hire a car . As most of the amazing things to do in Oman will involve you needing to drive quite far distances.

My 100% honest opinion. If you’re looking to save money, then you really can’t beat going via bus. It isn’t as cheap as it used to be but flight prices have increased a lot. It now costs around 1000 AED (100 OMR) to go between Dubai and Muscat, compared to 250-300 AED (25-30 OMR) only a few years ago. If you manage to get the bus when there’s less people travelling, 7 hours is only a couple more hours than the airport may take you. Yes you are sacrificing comfort, sitting on a bus for this long isn’t easy! But it is worth the 800 AED (80 OMR) saving which can go towards a much nicer hotel or even a luxury tour.

How to travel from Dubai to Muscat by bus via the Hatta border?

Update 2022: I received several messages from travelers (thank you Christian, Lioba and Kreso!) who kindly shared their recent experience traveling between Dubai and Muscat. Unfortunately, the Mwasalat busses (line 201) are still not operating between Dubai and Muscat due to COVID-19. This information was confirmed by an official agent at the Mwasalat counter. Instead, you can purchase a ticket from a private bus company called ‘ Al Khanjry Transport ‘. There are two daily buses, one at 6 am and one at 3 pm. Tickets are 100 AED / 10 OM per person (one-way) and can be bought directly at the Al Khanjry offices in Dubai or Muscat. It's recommended to purchase your tickets a few days before your intended travel date as they sell out quickly (only 50% of seats are currently available due to Covid safety regulations).

How long does the bus from dubai to muscat take.

If you are lucky the it only takes 6 hours to travel from Dubai to Muscat by bus. However,due to traffic jams in Dubai and the long waiting time at the Hatta border the journey took us 9 hours.

Important: don't make the same mistake as we did and avoid traveling to Muscat by bus from Dubai on Thursdays (especially the afternoon and evening bus) . Because Friday is when the weekend start in both the U.A.E. as well as Oman, this bus is very busy with workers going back home for the weekend. Which facilities are there on the bus?

For those who are a bit apprehensive about long-distance bus travel, don't worry! These luxury buses are as comfortable as they get.

On the Dubai Muscat bus, there are air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and USB charging points in the back of each chair.

There are no bathrooms on the bus, however, there are bathrooms at the border crossings (both at the U.A.E. as well as the Oman side).

For the return bus from Muscat to Dubai, the driver will usually allow a bathroom break if requested at one of the eleven stops in Oman.

Bus Dubai to Muscat: a step by step guide

Step 1: buy a bus ticket, how much does a bus ticket from dubai to muscat cost.

We paid 55AED per person for a one-way ticket (a return ticket is 90AED).

If you travel from Muscat to Dubai the price is 5.5 Omani Rial for a one-way ticket and 9 Rial for a return ticket.

What time does the Dubai-Muscat bus leave?

There are 3 buses a day in both directions.

From Dubai to Muscat:

• The Mwasalat bus from Dubai to Muscat departs at 7.30 am, 3.30 pm, and 11 pm from the Abu Hail bus station.
• Getting on the bus is also possible at Airport Terminal 2 (7.45 am, 3.45 pm and 11.45 pm) and at Rashidiya Bus Station (8 am, 4 pm and 12 pm). Please

From Muscat to Dubai:

• The Mwasalat bus from Muscat to Dubai departs at 6.20 am, 3.20 pm and 11.20 pm.
• Departure from Al Azaiba Station in Muscat. Along the way to Dubai, the bus stops at Muscat Airport, Burj Al Sahwa, Maabela, Barka, Musanah, Suwaiq, Khabura, Saham, Sohar, and Shinas.

Where can I buy a ticket for the bus from Dubai to Mucat?

Unfortunately, it's still not possible to book a ticket for the Mwasalat bus from Dubai to Muscat (or vice versa) online.

Tickets can be bought directly from the RTA stand found at exit 2 at the Abu Hail Station MRT station) or at the Mwasalat Office in Deira (near the Clock Tower), see the map below.

Alternatively, you can board the bus at Rashidiya Station (the last stop on the red metro line), however, you must get a ticket before getting on the bus because you cannot buy one in the bus itself.

Step 2: board the bus 30 minutes before departure

When departing from Abu Hail Bus Station, be sure to be here 30 minutes before departure .

Put your big backpack in the luggage space of the bus and hop aboard. Someone from the bus company will come and check your ticket.

Pick a seat (the ones at the front of the bus are usually reserved for single female travelers), sit back, and relax.

Keep your fingers crossed for light traffic in Dubai, in our case, it was very busy which added at least an hour to our travel time.

Step 3: the Hatta border, U.A.E. side part 1

After about a two hours drive you should arrive at the Hatta border (unfortunately it took us a lot longer due to the heavy traffic in Dubai).

At the U.A.E. border, you have to get off the bus and pay a 35AED exit fee per person. This can be paid in cash as well as by card. Once that's done, get back on the bus and KEEP YOUR EXIT FEE RECEIPT!

Step 4: the Hatta border, U.A.E. side part 2

The bus will drive a little further and stop at U.A.E. customs. Get off the bus again, take your passport and exit fee receipt with you.

Inside this customs building, you will get your U.A.E. exit stamp after which you can hop back on the bus.

Step 5: the Hatta border, Oman side part 1

Again the bus will drive on a little before stopping at Oman customs. Well, actually the Oman luggage checkpoint.

At this checkpoint, you will have to take all your belonging off the bus and present them to an Omani policeman (if you are male) or policewoman (if you are female).

The police will give your luggage a superficial check, but the real test is when all luggage is lined up and a specially trained dog is led around the luggage to check for drugs.

Presuming this goes smoothly all luggage can be loaded back on the bus and there is only one more step to go before you are officially in Oman!

Step 6: the Hatta border, Oman side part 2

Usually this part of the journey should go quite smoothly, however, it took us quite a bit of time because there were long lines at the Oman immigration counters.

We crossed the border on Thursday evening, which is the start of the weekend in Muslim countries. In hindsight, I knew this, but it hadn’t occurred to me the border would be extra busy on the evening before the weekend.

Regarding visas, since 2018 you can either get an electronic visa online before your Dubai to Muscat trip or a visa on arrival.

There are two tourism visas: a 10-day visa that costs OMR5 or a 30-day visa which is ORM20.

As we were going to do a 2-week road trip in Oman , we got a 30-day visa. There is an ATM at the Oman Customs Office where you can get the Omani Rial needed to pay for the visa.

After buying our visa and getting our stamps we got back on the bus which continued to Sohar. There are a couple more stops along the way where local people will board the bus or disembark.

The last stop in Muscat is Al Athaiba and by the time you arrive here, the bus will probably be almost empty.

You can either find a hotel nearby or get a taxi to Mutrah (we stayed at Mutrah Hotel . A taxi from Al Athaiba to Mutrah costs around 5 or 6 Rial.

Hey Veronica, I've checked and according to the Mwasalat website (https://mwasalat.om/intercity) the Dubai-Muscat bus is still not available at this moment. There is the Al Khanjry bus and you can always check the Mwasalat site again in January to check if services have been resumed. I wish you a safe journey! Lotte

Hi, just short notice since your page is jumping out on google regarding the bus Muscat - Dubai, so I wanted to leave an update to whoever might need the info.

Al Khanjry is operating 6 am and 3 pm, we went on the trip on 14.1.2022. 3 pm and it was ok.. took us 7 hours since we had a deep search of our bags on the UAE border by police.. though we arrived on time by 11 pm.

The trip is costing now 10 OMR in one way (we didn't ask for a discount since we were desperate not to go by air and no rent a car allowed!) and we bought a week earlier since the tickets are selling out very early and every second seat is empty. We bought it in their office on Ruwi station in Muscat.

The Mwasalat Buses: Tips for Getting the Dubai to Muscat Bus

The northern coast of the Arabian Peninsula is populated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the nation of Oman. Oman was largely isolated form the world until the 1970s, so it still retains much of the charm that other countries in the region lack. Travelers who come to Dubai are often looking for a more authentic travel experience, which Muscat provides. Here is our ultimate guide to the Mwasalat Dubai to Muscat bus.

We are generally fans of getting out there and trying to experience as much of the local environment as possible. When I first discovered that I would be traveling to Dubai, UAE for work, I hit on the idea of also going to Muscat, Oman . My graduate school hosted many Omani exchange students. I have fond memories of studying and learning with my Omani peers and hearing stories of their country. I knew I needed to go to Oman. Here is our experience.

So, I did quite a bit of research on the Internet and found that we could take the Mwasalat bus from Dubai to Muscat. This would give us a chance to see much of the countryside as we drove through the desert of the Arabian Peninsula for nearly six hours. We also had difficult find good information on flights to Muscat (more on that later). So, we opted for the Mwasalat Bus .

Note: Mwasalat Bus service between Muscat and Dubai has been temporarily cancelled as a result of the pandemic. Please consult the Mwasalat Bus website for current route status.

The bus to Muscat was driven by a driver who couldn’t figure out the nuances of the brake pedal. The bus would jerk forward and back giving us temporary whiplash. And the return trip from Muscat to Dubai was fraught with a bus breakdown.

Yes, it’s true. Our Mwasalat bus broke down. We had to pull into a kind of a bus lot while a mechanic took a look at the engine. Thankfully we weren’t too far out in the desert and thankfully we were close to a facility with a mechanic. However, the event made for a very memorable experience!

Note: In November 2015, the ONTC bus company was renamed the Mwasalat bus company. They are the same company, just a new name. However, you may still see references to the ONTC Dubai to Muscat bus and some of the older signs still exist.

Tips for Taking the Mwasalat Bus Between Dubai and Muscat

A few tips on the Dubai to Oman buses if you decide to go that route:

Bus from Dubai to Muscat

The buses leave Dubai for Oman from the Mwasalat Bus Terminal in Deira. The terminal is located behind DNATA. We found the office/ticket window to have sporadic hours, so it is best to buy your tickets the day before — especially if taking the first or last bus of the day. If you are staying at a hotel in Dubai, you can also have your hotel concierge obtain the tickets for you, which can sometimes be easier. You can check current bus schedule here .

A one-way bus ticket from Dubai to Oman costs 55 AED (and 90 AED for round trip). The Dubai bus leaves for Muscat at 7:00am, 3:00pm or 11:00pm. The much-rumored Mwasalat online booking tool has still not been implemented. At this time, online ticket purchases are still not possible.

About the Mwasalat Buses

Temperatures on the bus very considerably (depending on if the air conditioning is on or not), so be prepared with short sleeves as well as a light jacket. It can also be very helpful to have some food and a bottle of water. The buses do not have toilets on board, so plan ahead!

The UAE-Oman Border Crossing at Hatta

The border crossing is actually completed in two steps. If you are heading from Dubai to Muscat, you’ll first cross what amounts to a custom’s inspection at the Hatta border station. If you are European or North American, this process is essentially a formality (a passport stamp – your UAE Exit Stamp) and then you are left to wait.

Meanwhile, custom’s inspectors will go through baggage of the rest of the passengers, many of who will be Omanis as well as Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi workers. It seems the main items of interest are alcohol, tobacco, and pork products. Best not to transport contraband.

The second stop is on the Oman side of the border crossing. Here, you will need to get your documents processed for Oman, including obtaining an Oman visa and Oman arrival stamp. Inside the border station, you’ll find ticket windows and lines to get your visa and passport stamped. The lines for the Oman border were surprisingly long.

If you are from Europe or North American (what Oman calls countries on “List A”), there are two visa options. A 10 day stay costs RO 5 (Omani Riyals — the local currency). A stay of more than 10 days is RO 20. These are expat visas issued for overland travel ( official details can be found here ). The actual tourist visa is much more involved (you must present letters and also have two passport photos) and costs RO 20 ( official tourist visa details can be found here ). We were not expats, but we’re given the expat visa.

The Sohar Bus Stop

The buses between Dubai and Oman make one stop: Sohar. This is a kind of strip mall complex with toilets and a couple of fast food establishments — all serving roughly the same kind of food. There is nothing interesting to see at the Sohar, Oman stop.

Bus from Muscat to Dubai

The return from Oman to Dubai is the same in the reverse. Buses depart from the Ruwi bus station in Muscat. Tickets can be purchased inside the station at the ticket window. Given the potential for lines, it is best to buy your tickets the day before. Buses from Muscat to Dubai leave three times per day (6:00am, 3:00pm, and 11:00pm). You’ll make the same stop in Sohar and at the border.

I wouldn’t have traded the experience of the bus trip across the Lower Gulf desert for anything. But I wouldn’t repeat it again. Next time, if we find ourselves in Dubai, we’ll skip the adventures of the Mwasalat buses and fly from Dubai to Oman.

Tips for Flying Between Dubai and Muscat

Flights from dubai to muscat.

Muscat to Dubai flights take about 75 minutes. At the time of writing this, last minute flights from Dubai (DXB) to Muscat (MCT) were less than AED 460 (less than $125) round trip. Flying works out to be between four to five times more expensive than the bus, but it is also six to seven times faster. If we were doing the trip again, we’d seriously consider flying.

Muscat, the capital city of the Sultanate of Oman, witnesses many visitors from Dubai and other cities. As buses are one of the convenient and relatively cheaper modes of transportation, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai launched an international bus route in an agreement with the Government of the Sultanate of Oman to facilitate those who want to travel from Dubai to Muscat by bus.

These buses offer a convenient and economical option for travellers looking to explore the Sultanate without breaking the bank. Here are the bus options, fare, timings and the documents required to travel to Oman from UAE.

Sharjah- Muscat bus service

A bus service connecting Sharjah and Muscat was launched on February 27 (2024) by Sultanate's public transport company, Mwasalat. The service provides four trips — two each from Sharjah and Muscat and is operated via Shinas.

• 23kg as check-in baggage is allowed with 7kg permitted as hand baggage
• Fares start from 10 Oman Rials (Dh100) and 19 Oman Rials (Dh190)

The first bus from Sharjah departs at 6.30am from Al Jubail Bus Station and reaches Azaiba Bus Station at 2.30pm. The second bus departs from Sharjah at 4pm and reaches Muscat at 11.50pm.

Bus from Muscat will departs at 6.30am and reaches Sharjah at 3.40pm. The second will leaves Muscat at 4pm and reaches Al Jubail Bus Station at 1.10am.

Ras Al Khaimah to Musandam bus service

Residents wishing to see Musandam's rugged mountains and crystal-clear waters can take a bus ride from Ras Al Khaimah. Operated by the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA), the public transport service to Musandam in Oman started in October, 2023.

• Travel time is approximately three hours
• Ticket for the one-way journey costs Dh50
• Booking can be done on the official website of RAKTA, the RAKBUS application, on the bus and at the bus station
• Runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8am and 6pm

The service starts at the main bus station (Al Dhait South) in Ras Al Khaimah and stops at two places in the emirate: the Al Rams and Shaam area. In Musandam, the service will start and end at Wilayat of Khasab, with stops at Tibaat, Wilayat of Bukha, Harf, and Qada area.

Abu Dhabi to Muscat bus service

Mwasalat relaunched bus service to the UAE in October 2023, connecting Muscat to Abu Dhabi via Al Ain.

• One-way ticket from Muscat to Abu Dhabi will cost OMR11.5 (Dh109)
• Book tickets on the Mwasalat website

Want to find out how to travel by bus from Muscat to Dubai , as well as from Dubai to Muscat ? Having travelled this route dozens of times since 2011, it’s time to update you with the latest information, based on my latest trip in the summer of 2023.

While planning my first trip to Oman , I decided to fly back home from Dubai, so I could spend a few days in the city, and discover it for myself.

If you haven’t arrived in Oman yet, check out my tips on what to do in Muscat , which will help you explore the best things the city has to offer.

Travelling By Bus From Muscat To Dubai

Travelling by bus from Muscat to Dubai in 2023 is very different from before. After reopening its borders after the challenges the world faced between 2020-2022, the Muscat-Dubai-Muscat bus route has undergone some changes.

Travelling from Muscat to Dubai overland is still the best way to make this journey in 2023.

Bus From Muscat To Dubai

Mwasalat buses.

Oman’s national bus company (formerly ONTC) used to run three daily buses from Al Zaiba bus station in Muscat, not far from Sultan Qaboos Mosque. 

Since one of their buses crashed after entering the UAE back in 2019, with several fatal victims , the company stopped serving this route.

It’s still unclear whether Mwasalat buses between Muscat and Dubai will resume services again one day.

Al Khanjry Buses From Muscat To Dubai

Today, Al Khanjry is the only company operating this route. Their office is located near Ruwi bus station. Al Khanjry buses from Oman to Dubai have 3 daily departures: at 6am, 3pm and 9:30pm.

Tickets are only available from their office in Ruwi. You cannot buy tickets online. While you can find their contacts on the internet, they don’t reply to Whatsapp or Facebook messages. Nor do they answer the phone. That’s correct, you must go to the office yourself.

Their bus seats are fairly comfortable, and women travelling alone tend to sit at the front of the bus. Males sit wherever they please – not really a rule, but just local custom.

It’s worth it travelling during the day, as the view of the countryside is quite scenic, especially the further north in Oman you get.

There is only one stop between both cities, a small snack bar in Sohar called Burj Al Falaj, where they may also collect other passengers. If you’re in Sohar, you can buy your tickets here.

When buying your bus tickets, you must bring your passport. Al Khanjry recommends buying your tickets at least 4 days before your departure since they can get booked up quickly.

You can find the Al Khanjry Muscat location here . To get there, take any bus that stops at Ruwi Bus Station and follow the directions from Google Maps. The office has free wifi.

Bus From Dubai To Muscat

There is only one bus company operating the Dubai-Muscat bus route. For that reason, it’s very important that you buy your ticket as far in advance as you can. This is a very popular route among tourists and local workers doing a visa run.

Al Khanjry’s office in Dubai is located 10 minutes walk from Deira City Centre metro station. You will have to physically go to their office since they don’t answer any messages on Whatsapp, Facebook or Instagram.

At the office, you’ll see a screen showing the bus availability on the Dubai to Muscat bus routes for the next seven days.

I spoke personally to the company owner back in Muscat and his advice was to always buy the ticket four days before departure, at the latest.

When travelling overland from Dubai to Oman, you must pay a Dubai exit fee online. To do that, you must download the “Dubai Smart Travel app”.

At The Oman-Dubai Border

Things at the border have changed considerably over the years. On the Omani side of the border, where you will get your leaving stamp .

The driver will call a certain number of people, so if you’re sitting at the back, you should be in the last group called to clear immigration.

There are only three desks at the border and, as long as the officers don’t get an “exotic” passport, the line should move quickly.

At the immigration building, you’ll find a couple of small shops selling snacks and soft drinks, as well as a toilet and a prayer room.

After another 15-minute drive through the rugged mountains, you will get to the Hatta border, on the UAE side. The immigration officers are overall pleasant and efficient.

For American, British and EU passport holders, the process is usually fast. But since most passengers are workers from India and Pakistan, you may have to wait long until their papers are processed.

There is a small duty-free shop outside and public facilities at the rear of the building.

You will get back on the bus and, after another short drive, they will stop for customs clearance.

Here you will have to bring all your luggage to the office. If you’re coming on the night bus, chances are there will be only one officer on duty and he will manually check every single passenger’s hand luggage and suitcase contents – a very slow process.

Keep your passport handy, though, because the Oman- UAE border at this point goes on zig-zag in the desert, but the road goes in a straight line.

So you will enter Oman again, and a police officer will check all passports. And then you will re-enter UAE territory and have your passport checked once more.

The whole process, from the time you stop at the Omani passport control, until you clear customs on the UAE side, will around 1.5 to 2 hours.

From here, if you’re travelling during the day, you’ll enjoy the view of tall sand dunes just a few metres from the road. After another half an hour, the view of Dubai and its skyscrapers in the distance, including the incredible Burj Khalifa .

One of the favorite tourist attractions for UAE residents is Oman, known for its captivating beaches and beautiful landscape. You can travel to Oman from Dubai not just by air, but also by road. Since the launch of the bus service from Dubai to Oman in January 2019, visiting Oman has become easier and more affordable for UAE residents. However, always check with the authorities for the latest travel restrictions and requirements before heading there.

Overview of Dubai to Oman Bus Service

The Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) collaborated with Oman’s National Transport Company, Mwasalat, to resume the 201 route between Dubai and Muscat in 2019. This collaboration resulted in new routes and stations between the two destinations.

Dubai to Oman Bus Ticket Prices

The ticket price for a bus service from Dubai to Oman is AED 55. For a round trip, the Dubai to Oman bus ticket costs AED 90. Tickets for the Dubai to Oman bus can be obtained at the RTA stand. The introduction of online bookings will simplify Dubai to Oman bus ticket reservations. Additionally, the exit fee at the UAE border is AED 35 per person.

Dubai to Oman Bus Service Timings

Dubai to Oman bus schedules vary, as the bus departs three times from three different locations within the city. These locations are:

• Rashidiya Bus Station: 08:00 am, 04:00 pm, and 11:30 pm
• Airport Terminal 2: 07:45 am, 03:45 pm, and 11:15 pm

How to Travel from Dubai to Oman

Traveling from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Oman (and vice versa) is a must-try for citizens, residents, and tourists in these two neighbouring countries. Both countries have plenty of sights and attractions, and you can easily travel between them, either by road (bus or private car) or by air.

Notably, the Sultanate of Oman features many beautiful landscapes and cultural destinations. If you have ever dreamed about visiting this country, or taking a road trip from Dubai to Muscat and other nearby cities, keep on reading for some great travel tips and ideas!

Dubai to Muscat Distance

The distance between Dubai and Oman via road travel is around 423 kilometres. Of course, the distance may vary depending on your exact location, specific destination, and the route you are planning to take. For instance, if you are traveling from Dubai to Muscat (the capital of Oman) via the Sharjah-Kalba Road (E102), the distance is around 450 kilometres. On the other hand, if you are going to take the Al Ain-Dubai Road (E66), the distance would be around 472 kilometres.

Flights from Dubai to Oman

Nowadays, there are several airlines flying between the UAE and Muscat, including: Oman Air, Emirates (from Dubai), Etihad (from Abu Dhabi), flydubai, and Air Arabia (from Sharjah). Oman Air happens to be the national carrier of Oman, with regular flights from Muscat to Dubai. Meanwhile, Emirates has bi-weekly flights from Dubai to Muscat, every Friday and Sunday.

Travel from Dubai to Oman by Bus

Although traveling by plane is definitely quick and convenient, you may want to consider traveling by bus as another option. There’s a bus route operating from Dubai to Oman, which means you can take a longer and more “scenic” route!

Since January 2019, Bus Route 201 has been transporting passengers from Dubai to Oman. The cost is AED 55 per person for a one-way ticket, and AED 90 for a round-trip ticket. As for the travel time, commuting from Dubai to Oman takes around six hours, depending on traffic and bus stops.

Below are the departure times for Bus 201 from Dubai to Muscat, for your reference:

• Abu Hail Bus Station – 7:30 am, 3:30 pm, and 11:00 pm
• Airport Terminal 2 – 7:45 am, 3:45 pm, and 11:15 pm
• Rashidiya Bus Station – 8:00 am, 4:00 pm, and 11:30 pm

As you can see, the route runs three times daily, starting from Abu Hail Bus Station, which is right next to Abu Hail MRT Station in Dubai. It stops at Airport Terminal 2 and Rashidiya Bus Station for about 15 minutes, thus making it convenient for travelers coming from these places.

Dubai to Oman by Road

If you prefer to drive, you can certainly take your car (or rent a car) and head to Oman by going on a road trip. Don’t forget to bring your passport, visa, and other requirements — as you will be crossing the UAE-Oman border, of course! The great thing about taking a road trip is that you can drive at your own pace, and take lots of pictures at interesting sights along the way.

Dubai to Oman Border

If you are traveling by bus from the Dubai bus station, it should take you around three hours to reach the UAE-Oman border. This period is slightly shorter — around two and a half hours — if you are driving your own car. In any case, you need to be prepared with your documents before undergoing the security checkpoints at the border. After finishing there, it will take you about four to five more hours until you reach Muscat, the capital city of Oman.

UAE-Oman Border Checkpoints

When traveling from Dubai to Muscat, there are three different checkpoints that you need to pass through, whether you’re traveling by bus or by car. You will also be passing the same checkpoints on your way back (from Muscat to Dubai), though the process differs slightly.

From the Dubai bus station, you will reach the first checkpoint at the Hatta border. Here, you will need to present your passport and pay AED 35 as the UAE exit fee. Don’t forget to keep the receipt after making your payment!

After driving (or riding the bus) a little further, you will reach another checkpoint. Once again, you will need to present your passport, as well as the receipt for paying the exit fee that you made earlier. At this point, your passport will be stamped.

The third checkpoint is when you finally cross the UAE-Oman border. Security officials will check your luggage, and you need to present your passport and visa requirements. That’s it! You have just entered the Sultanate of Oman!

Dubai-Oman Travel Tips

Before making the trip from Dubai to Oman, keep the following tips in mind:

• Be punctual. If you are traveling by bus, be sure to arrive at the bus station at least half an hour before departure time. After all, it’s better to be early than to risk missing your bus! Besides, there are restaurants at the station where you can eat and relax while waiting to board the bus.
• Reminder for female travelers. If you are traveling solo, try to get seated next to another female passenger. And take note… women are usually seated at the front of the bus.
• Prepare your documents in advance. Depending on your passport, you might need to apply for a visa before going to Oman, although some passports may qualify for a “visa on arrival.” Check with the immigration authorities beforehand to avoid any problems during travel.
• Traveling with medication. If you need to take any medicines during the trip, don’t forget to bring your doctor’s prescription as well. Moreover, check with the health authorities in Oman for their list of banned and restricted medicines. The last thing you want to happen upon reaching the border is to get detained because of bringing prohibited medication!

Traveling from Dubai to Oman (and vice versa) is pretty much easy and straightforward, as long as you have all the necessary documents. If you are a resident of either the UAE or Oman, consider traveling between the two countries so that you can enjoy many amazing sights and experiences!

Planning a trip from Dubai to Oman by road ? Based on my many trips from UAE to Oman by road I put together this extensive guide that will help you prepare for a road trip from Dubai to Oman by car.

Whether you are renting a car in Dubai or driving your own vehicle , getting from Dubai to Muscat by road (or elsewhere in Oman ) is pretty straightforward.

Nonetheless, there is some important information that you need which I share in this post: UAE-Oman border crossings and procedures , required documents to drive through UAE Oman border by rental car and private car , including car insurance (orange card), driving times and distance from Dubai to Oman (and from other emirates in the UAE) and last but not least, how to get Oman visit visa both as a tourist in Dubai (UAE) and as a UAE resident .

Uae to oman by car: a quick checklist.

• A car- if you are looking to rent one, then I recommend checking Discovercars and Rentalcars car search aggregators for the best car rental rates in the UAE .
• Car registration card ( Mulkiya ), car insurance in Oman-orange card, driver’s license. 
• An International Driving Permit might be required when renting a car in UAE as a tourist.
• NOC certificate for a rental car or if you are driving a borrowed or leased car. 
• For vehicles registered in Dubai -Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes (UAE-expats only).
• Oman tourist visa (obtained online or at the border, subject to nationality).
• You need a passport to enter Oman from UAE by road.
• For UAE visitors going to Oman: your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after the visa issue date. 
• For UAE expats going from Dubai to Oman : UAE residency should be valid for at least 3 months and passport for at least 6 months after the visa issue date.
• Advisable  Travel Insurance .  I always take out one on my trips to Oman to have peace of mind.

Is a road trip from Dubai to Oman by car worth it?

Traveling to  Oman by road from  Dubai  (or Abu Dhabi, or any other Emirate)  is the best way to visit the Sultanate. Roads in UAE and Oman are in excellent condition and driving from Dubai to Muscat or elsewhere in Oman is a breeze.

Whether you are a UAE resident or visiting Dubai as a tourist, you can easily go on a road trip not only to  Muscat , but also visit nearby  Musandam , head on a long drive to Salalah , or just about anywhere else in  Oman  from any Emirate in the UAE either for a weekend or longer. 

Although the distance from Dubai to Muscat by road (the most popular Dubai-Oman route) is almost 500 kilometers and takes 5 hours to drive, do not get discouraged. The drive is long but pleasant: along the way, you will be blessed with the otherworldly landscapes of the Hajar mountains, the beautiful Gulf of Oman coastline, and rolling desert dunes. Moreover , petrol in UAE and Oman is cheap making it yet another great reason to go on a road trip to Oman from the UAE.

Dubai to Oman by Road: driving your own car from UAE to Oman

Can i take my car from dubai to oman.

Yes, as a UAE resident, you can drive your own car from Dubai to Oman.

What documents do I need to drive my car from UAE to Oman?

To drive your car from UAE to Oman you need the following car documents:

• Driver’s license
• Car registration card ( mulkiya )
• Orange card – car insurance policy for driving in Oman
• For vehicles registered in Dubai -Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes.

How to get an orange card for Oman?

When driving your car from UAE to Oman, make sure to obtain a so-called  orange card  from your insurance company. This card serves as a car insurance policy that covers your car while driving in Oman. It is always required when traveling in the GAIF (General Arab Insurance Federation) countries (which includes Oman).

If you purchased a car insurance policy that already covers Oman territory (many bigger insurance providers include Oman), you will get an orange card free of charge. Otherwise, you can request your car insurance provider to include coverage for the Sultanate of Oman and issue an orange card for an additional fee.

Important! Make sure to contact your car insurance company and request to issue an orange car a few days before your trip.

Good to know: Whenever I request an orange card for my Dubai to Muscat trips, I usually receive it the next day via email from my insurance company. However, in some cases, you might have to collect it in person and it takes a couple of days for the insurance company to issue an orange card.  Therefore, the best is to call your insurance company and ask for all the details about the orange card processing times and costs (if any).

Getting Oman car insurance policy at the UAE-Oman border

If you are already heading from UAE to Oman by road and forgot to obtain the orange card, do not worry. You can get a car insurance policy covering driving in Oman at the border. According to the latest information I have, it costs 105 AED for 5 days which is the minimum number of days you can purchase insurance at the border.

IMPORTANT: Orange card purchased at the UAE-Oman border only covers damages caused by the Insured to a Third Party in a foreign GAIF member country (including Oman in this case). That means damages done to your car will not be covered.

Can I use a UAE license to drive in Oman?

If you are a UAE resident, you can use your UAE driving license to  drive in Oman .

Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes.

If you are driving a Dubai-registered vehicle from Dubai to Oman, according to RTA (Roads & Transport Authority), you should obtain a Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes.

Documents required for the certificate:

• Original Emirates ID.
• NOC from the Automobile & Touring Club of The UAE if you are a UAE-expat (this does not apply for GCC citizens).

The service costs 170 AED in total.

From my personal experience, I was never asked for such a document when driving from Dubai to Oman my Dubai-registered car. I found out about this requirement only recently but apparently, it was in place for years.

Moreover, I have been to Oman dozens of times. I went to Musandam , Muscat , and Salalah using different borders, and I was never asked for this certificate. People I know who also travelled to Oman from Dubai with their vehicles were never asked for one either.

I got to know about this particular certificate accidentally when I was looking for an NOC form for a borrowed car (more about it in the section below) on RTA website.

Nonetheless, if you are driving a Dubai-registered car, you can apply for this Tourism Purpose certificate through RTA, more application process here (as I understand you cannot do it online, you must go to one of the RTA centers).

Dubai to Oman by Road: can I drive a borrowed or leased car from UAE to Oman?

If you want to drive to Oman in a vehicle that is not in your name, below are the two most common scenarios and what to do to successfully cross the border.

Can I drive my friend’s, spouse’s, or company’s car from UAE to Oman?

Yes, you can drive someone else’s car as long as you have the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the owner (written permission to drive their car across the UAE-Oman border) along with car registration documents, and, of course, insurance covering the territory of Oman (orange card).

I would also recommend obtaining a Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes discussed above if you are borrowing a Dubai-registred car.

NOC for the car to Oman format

If you are borrowing a car from a friend, spouse, or your work car, you can ask them to write down a free-style format NOC letter. It has to state the owner’s name, EID, residency visa number, and passport number and that they have no objection to you (make sure to include your name) taking/using the car from UAE to Oman. You should also attach a photocopy of the car owner’s ID along with the letter.

IMPORTANT: I received a letter from a reader who said they had problems at the Hatta-Al Wajajah border with taking a borrowed car because a free-form NOC issued by the car owner was not accepted. This is the first time someone complained about not being able to pass the border with a borrowed car because of an invalid NOC letter. I contacted RTA (The Road and Transform Authority in UAE) to check if they can provide a formal NOC form that the car owner has to fill in. The RTA representative confirmed that there is no need to come to their premises and that the owner can actually issue a free-form NOC letter. I suspect (this is only my assumption), that the problem was not an NOC of the vehicle owner. It could have been the Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes was also required for a borrowed vehicle that is Dubai-registered.

What if my car is still on the mortgage, can I drive it to Oman?

I drove my leased car from Dubai to Oman through the Hatta-Al Wajajah border without any issues. Nobody asked me any questions related to the lease. Neither did I contact the bank to ask if I needed any special permission to drive across the border between UAE and Oman.

In general, according to my research, people were allowed to cross the Hatta-Al Wajajah UAE-Oman border with their cars which are on a mortgage.

However, I would recommend contacting your bank and requesting a No Objection Certificate from them to have complete peace of mind.

Good to know: many people reported (and I second them from my experience) that the easiest UAE-Oman border to cross with borrowed car is Hatta-Al Wajajah. Folks at this border are laid back and they never even ask for the NOC even when you are driving somebody else’s car. Meanwhile, other Oman-UAE borders are stricter and they most likely request NOC.

Dubai to Oman by Road: Can I take a rental car from Dubai to Oman?

Yes, you can take a rental car from UAE to Oman. Nonetheless, before renting a car in Dubai (or elsewhere in UAE), make sure to check that the specific agency allows you to take the car across the UAE-Oman border. For example, with  Discovercars  or  Rentalcars , before making a reservation, you can always check if taking a car to Oman is permitted by the rental company.

On Discovercars website you can click on Rental Conditions->Cross Border policy to see if driving a car through the border is allowed.

UAE Car rental companies that allow taking rental cars to Oman

To help you save some time, I found out that the following car rental agencies permit border crossing from Dubai to Oman: Aurostrad, Dollar, Avis, SIXT. All can be booked through Discovercars and Rentalcars (it is cheaper to book through car search aggregators than directly through the company).

Dubai to oman by road: required documents to drive a rental car from uae to oman.

To drive a rental car from UAE to Oman you need the following car documents:

• Driver’s license (the driver must be the same person who rented the car)
• NOC certificate provided by the insurance company
• Car insurance policy for driving in Oman provided by car rental company

NOC: written permission to take UAE rental car to Oman

If you plan to go to Oman from UAE in a rental car, one of the most important documents you have to obtain is a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that you will request from your rental company.

Whether you booked a car through Discovercars or Rentalcars, or directly with a company, make sure to contact the agency directly at least 2-4 days ahead of your trip (depending on the company). The rental company will request your driver’s license and passport copy in order to process the required documents (NOC and also additional car insurance which I talk about in the next paragraph).

Good to know: UAE-based rental companies specify that not all their vehicles can be taken to Oman from UAE. Therefore, you might change your booked vehicle in case it does not fall under the permitted vehicles category.

Car insurance policy for Oman

To drive to Oman from the UAE you will also have to purchase an additional car insurance policy for Oman. This policy must be issued by your car hire in UAE company. Any other car insurance that you have purchased elsewhere will not be valid. Note, that you cannot obtain Oman car insurance at the border when you are driving a rental car.

The cost of a car insurance policy for Oman is combined with NOC issuance cost and varies across the companies.

As a reference, I found on the Avis website, that cost of the NOC certificate and additional insurance is combined:

• 1 to 3 days- 450 AED, and 100 AED for an additional day
• 7 days – 750 AED, and 100 AED for an additional day
• 1 month- 1500 AED, and 100 AED for an additional day

You will receive your NOC certificate and insurance upon collection of the rental car. Keep this with you to show at the border if requested.

Extra costs for taking your rental car from UAE to Oman

Also, note that all rentals in UAE and Oman have a mileage cap of around 200-250 km/day (calculated as a total for your rental period). Exceeding the allowance means you have to pay an extra of around 1 AED per kilometer. Oman is around 4 times bigger than the UAE, and it is very easy to finish the mileage allowance when driving from Dubai to Oman.

Is an international license valid in UAE and Oman? 

If you are a tourist visiting the UAE and are also planning to drive to Oman, you have to have a driving license issued in your country of residence, matching the residency stated on your passport.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in UAE and Oman as a tourist?

When driving in UAE and Oman as a tourist you may be required to have International Driving Permit (IDP). However, nationals of some countries are exempt from this requirement if their Passport and driving license is issued from the same country.

This applies to the following countries: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia, Finland, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark, Portugal, Austria, France, United Kingdom, Norway, Romania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Serbia, Lithuania, United States of America, Canada, Japan, Australia, Singapore, People’s Republic of China, South Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong and South Africa.

Nationals from all other countries and those whose passports and Driving licenses are not from the same country must hold an international driving license accompanied by their original driving license.

Driving from UAE & Dubai to Oman routes and UAE-Oman border crossings

UAE and Oman share several borders. The route you will take depends on where in Oman you are going to and which UAE emirate you are driving from/to.

Important:  there are specific borders that are open for everybody: tourists, GCC residents, and GCC citizens. While some of the UAE Oman borders are open to GCC citizens and Omani nationals only but not to UAE expats and tourists. 

Below is a list of the UAE-Oman border posts open for tourists, GCC residents, and GCC citizens:

• Hatta-Al Wajajah Border Crossing in Hatta;
• Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing in Al Ain;
• Khatam Al Shiklah in Al Ain;
• Al Dhara Border Post-Musandam (Westside coastal Khasab road);
• Dibba checkpoint – Musandam East coast (north of Fujeirah Emirate);
• Khatmat Malaha Border Post in Kalba (Eastern Sharjah, Gulf of Oman side).

Following is detailed information and recommendations on which UAE-Oman border to take based on your location in UAE and destination in Oman.

Hatta – Al Wajajah Border Crossing

Hatta Al-Wajajah border is one of the most popular crossings for travelers from Dubai to Muscat by road. It is also the closest to Dubai UAE-Oman border that is open to everyone including UAE expats and tourists. The time spent to cross this border is usually around 30 min to 1 hour depending on how busy it is. People tend to travel more during public holidays and weekends, thus allow extra time for crossing this popular UAE-Oman border.

Cross Hatta-Al Wajajah border if:

• You are driving from Dubai to  Muscat  or to the Eastern part of Oman. It is 140 KM from Dubai to the border and takes approximately 1 HR 40 MIN to drive from downtown Dubai to the Hatta Al Wajajah border. 
• Hatta-Al Wajajah is also the closest border to cross if you are driving from other emirates except for Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. That being said, when driving from Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain to the East of Oman Mainland, the closest border is Hatta-Al Wajajah.

You can also take this border if you want to drive from  Dubai to Salalah along the coast , but it will be a much longer route than through the border in Al Ain.

Important!   When driving from Dubai to Hatta Al Wajajah, take Sharjah-Kalba road E102 followed by the new Hatta road (there is no need to reach Shawka). DO NOT get confused if you are coming via E44 through Al Madam. This route will bring you to a border near Al Madam in Sharjah. Currently, it is closed (or only open for GCC citizens). 

Tip: once you are in Oman, and heading to Muscat from Hatta border, set your navigation to take you to the newly built highway which runs in the hinterlands of Oman. This is a much nicer and slightly faster route than the one that runs along the coast (you don’t actually see the coast).

Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing in Al Ain

Located in Al Ain, the Garden City of UAE, Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing is convenient if you are driving from the capital Abu Dhabi, or if you are headed to Nizwa, Jebel Shams, Jebel Akhdar, or Salalah.

Cross the Mezyad-Hafeet border if:

• You are driving from Abu Dhabi to Mainland Oman. It is 190km and around 2 hrs drive from Abu Dhabi to the Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing in Al Ain. 
• You are driving from Dubai to Nizwa, Jebel Shams, and  Salalah  in Southern Oman. The Meyzad-Hafeet border is 160km and 2 hours drive from Dubai Downtown. 
• You are driving from other Emirates (Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain) to Nizwa, Jebel Shams, and  Salalah  in Southern Oman.

Tip: if you are doing a road trip to Oman that starts in Muscat but finishes in Nizwa, you can use Mezyad-Hafeet border to come back to UAE.

Khatam Al Shiklah border in Al Ain

This is the other UAE-Oman border in Al Ain which is mainly used by trucks. However, regular cars can also use it as an alternative to Mezyad-Hafeet. It takes a similar amount of time to get to this border as to the Mezyad border. 

I have used this border before and it was very quiet with barely any cars.

Note:  the distance between Khatam Al Shiklah control posts on UAE and Oman sides is around 30km. Thus, don’t get confused, it’s a long drive in no man’s land. 

Al Dhara Border Post-Musandam (Westside coastal Khasab road)

Use this Al Dhara Border Crossing if you are driving to Khasab in the  Musandam Peninsula  on the west side.

Located at the Northern tip of Ras al Khaimah emirate, the Al Dhara border crossing connects UAE to Oman’s exclave Musandam Governorate, Westside. 

It takes 2 hours to reach the Musandam Al Dhara border from Dubai and 3.5 hours from Abu Dhabi.

Dibba checkpoint – Musandam East coast (north of Fujairah Emirate)

Use the Dibba checkpoint crossing if you are going to the East side of Musandam, Oman.

Dibba border is essentially a military checkpoint rather than an official border crossing. There is no official checkpoint on the Oman side, only on the UAE side. Also, there are two checkpoints next to each other- one for GCC citizens only, and the other for tourists and GCC residents.

If you are visiting the Musandam Peninsula from the Dibba side, you can use a tour operator or stay at Six Senses Ziggy Bay Resort, or Dibba Resort to be able to cross this checkpoint visa-free. Tour operators or hotels will arrange an entry permit for you if you have a booking with them.

However, if you are planning to go on hiking in Wadi Khub al Shamzi, or mountain biking in that area, you can still use an Oman visit visa to cross the Dibba checkpoint. 

Just before the lockdown back in 2020, we crossed the Dibba checkpoint with an Oman visit visa for GCC residents when we were going hiking on the East side of Musandam, Oman. We did not know about permits being arranged by tour operators. Also, the officers at the border did not question us. We explained that we are going for a hike and they let us through.

Khatmat Malaha Border Post in Kalba (Eastern Sharjah, Gulf of Oman side)

Use this border crossing:  if you are driving from Fujeirah or Kalba (a town that belongs to Sharjah Emirate on the East side of UAE).

Attention!  Information about this border crossing is not very clear. According to my research, it looks like it is open to GCC residents. However, some people reported that they could not cross the Khatmat Malaha border with a rental car even when they have NOC and insurance. You will be directed to the Hatta border.

In case you are traveling from Fujeirah to Oman as a tourist, you better head directly to Hatta- Al Wajajah border crossing.

FUN FACT:  Did you know you can visit Oman from UAE without a visa or permit? Even more, you can also visit UAE inside Oman. A small territory that is an exclave of the Musandam Governorate is called Madha. This tiny piece of land belongs to Oman and is an enclave of the UAE near Khor Fakkan town on the East Coast. What is even more fascinating is that you can cross the UAE-Oman border twice, and find Nahwa in the middle of Madha. Nahwa is an enclave territory that belongs to the UAE and is surrounded by Madha from all sides.  You do not need any permit or visa to enter Madha!

UAE-Oman border crossing procedures: waiting times, formalities, and exit fees

UAE-Oman border crossing procedures may appear somewhat confusing if you are travelling from Dubai to Oman by car for the first time. Hence, I share the step-by-step procedures and formalities that you have to go through at UAE Oman land borders. The bellow described procedure is exactly what you will have to do at the Hatta-Al Wajajah border. However, other UAE-Oman borders have similar steps.

UAE to Oman by car border crossing step-by-step

1. pay uae exit fee.

At the first drive-through counter on the UAE side of the UAE-Oman border, you will be asked to pay the exit fee of 35 AED plus 5% VAT per person. Collect the receipt and show it at the next window together with your passports where you will get an UAE exit stamp.

You can pay in cash or by card. Nonetheless, I always recommend having cash (UAE dirhams) just in case.

Note that when leaving UAE by land through any border to Oman you must always pay 35 AED exit fee per person, and only then you can get an exit stamp on your passport. 

2. Present your Oman visit visa (or obtain an Oman visa on arrival) and get entry to Oman stamp

After exiting UAE, you will have to proceed with a visa check and entry stamp to Oman. Also, your car registration documents, insurance, and NOC (if applicable) will be checked.

On the Hatta- Al Wajajah border, you have to drive for around 1 kilometer until you reach the Oman border post. Park your car and enter the building to get your Oman entry stamps there. If you already have Oman e-visas prearranged, it will save you time. Otherwise, you will have to fill in the immigration application form and make payments for the Oman visit visa on the spot.

IMPORTANT: Oman visa on arrival is subject to nationality. The good news is that an Oman visit visa might even be FREE if you meet certain criteria. Continue reading this post to find all the information about Oman visit visas for both UAE visitors and UAE residents.

Once your Oman visa is set and passports are stamped with Oman entry, you will be handed a small sheet of paper that indicates the number of passengers traveling to Oman. Keep it safe as you will have to show it when driving through the passport control gate and during a car inspection.

3. Pass Oman passport control

Once your Oman visa is sorted, proceed back to the car and drive to the passport checkpoint where you will be asked to show your passport with the Oman entry stamp.

4. Stop at the vehicle inspection point

After passing the passport control window, you will have to stop for a car inspection. The border control officer will inspect the interior and the boot of your car and if all is good, will stamp a small sheet of paper that you have earlier received at the Oman visa checkpoint. Keep it safe, as you will have to show it at the last checkpoint before entering Oman.

5. Pass the last checkpoint before entering Oman

After finishing your car inspection, you will drive a few hundred meters until you reach the last police checkpoint. Give the officer a small sheet of paper that was stamped at the car inspection place.

And that is it. Welcome to Oman!

How long does it take to cross the UAE-Oman border?

From my personal experience, with all the documents ready (printed e-visa, passports, and car documents in place), all the checking procedures, without queues (only a few vehicles at the border), it still takes almost an hour to pass Hatta-Al Wajajah border when driving from Dubai to Muscat. 

It is much faster (when there is no queue) at Al-Dhara (Khasab) border when travelling to Musandam, Oman. You can expect to spend around 30 minutes on Al-Dhara border.

Good to know : Public holidays and weekends are known to be notorious when it comes to queueing at UAE-Oman borders. Expect to spend at least a couple of hours at the border during peak times.

Driving back from Oman to the UAE

The procedure of returning to UAE from Oman by car is similar just in reverse. The only difference is that you do not have to pay any exit fees from Oman and the car inspection on the UAE border side is much stricter. I have driven from Muscat to Dubai with my car boot loaded with photography equipment and suitcases. The offers on the UAE side did a thorough check-up and asked many questions about what and why I was carrying.

Exiting Oman

On the way back to the UAE to Oman, you will be given a small piece of paper when crossing the Oman border (an exit stamp of some sort). Keep it safe as you will have to present it when driving through the next checkpoint on the UAE border side.

Arriving in the UAE

On the UAE side, you will again have to park your car and go to the immigration post (at the Hatta border it was a separate building for UAE residents and tourists, while GCC citizens could drive through the checkpoints.

In the arrival hall, you will have to show your passports. If you are a tourist returning back to the UAE, then your UAE visa will also be checked (refer to the Oman visa requirements section for more information).

Oman to Dubai vehicle inspection point

After UAE passport control, you will have to drive through an x-ray scan, and then stop at a dedicated checkpoint where the contents of your car will be inspected thoroughly.

Collect a stamped small piece of paper from the officer. You will have to hand it over at the last drive-through checkpoint window. And that is the last step.

UAE to Oman by road visa requirements

In this section, you will find all the necessary information about UAE to Oman by road visa requirements both for UAE visit visa holders and UAE residents.

Oman Visa for UAE residents traveling by road

Visa-free entry for uae residents visiting oman for less than 14 days.

According to the latest news , UAE expats and GCC residents are eligible for visa-free entry from UAE to Oman by road (and by air) if they are traveling to the Sultanate for less than 14 days. *

The other great news is that the former requirement for the UAE residency to be on a list of specific professions has been removed. UAE residents of all commercial professions are now eligible to enter Oman.

IMPORTANT: the UAE residency must be valid for at least 3 months prior to arrival to the Sultanate, while the passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

*I recently traveled from Dubai to Muscat by road via the Hatta-Al Wajajah border and encountered UAE residents who still had to pay 5 OMR (50 AED) for their visit visa. Those were Sri Lankan residents to be specific. Out of curiosity, I have asked officials at the border why not all UAE residents are getting visa-free entry. The officials explained that it depends on the nationality of each visitor. Also, not everyone is entitled to a visa on arrival. For example, Nigerians who are UAE residents are still required to fill in e-visa applications online, while Sri Lankans can get a visit visa at the border. I could not find a full list of specific requirements per country, but it is certain that EU, UK, US, Australia, Canada nationals who are residents in the UAE can travel visa-free to Oman.

Oman E-visa for UAE residents staying longer than 14 days

As a UAE resident, if you are traveling to Oman from UAE by road and planning to stay for longer than 14 days in the Sultanate, then you must apply for an Oman e-visa or get one at the border if your nationality is eligible. However, Oman authorities encourage us to obtain a visit Visa online to save time at the border.

You can apply for an Oman visa online on  Royal Oman Police’s official website here . Click on the “Apply for Tourist Visa” section and create an account.

Make sure to pick the correct visa type:

• As a GCC resident,  in most cases, you will need to fill in the form  29A GCC Resident Visa  valid for 30 days (unless you are looking to apply for a long-term multiple entry visa).
• 30-day Oman tourist visa for GCC residents costs 5 OMR (50 AED).

Dubai to Oman by road: entering Oman with the UAE visit visa (tourist)

As a tourist holding the UAE visit visa you either have to apply for an Oman e-visa or you can get it on arrival if your nationality is eligible. You may also be allowed to travel to Oman visa-free if your nationality falls under the Dubai-Oman Joint Visa countries ** list (see below for more info).

Oman e-visa for tourists in the UAE

• If you are traveling to Oman from Dubai by road holding a UAE tourist visa, and fall under G1** countries list , you can get a visa on arrival for 10 days which costs 10 OMR (100 AED) . If you intend to stay longer, then you should apply for a 26B visa online valid for 30 days which costs 20 OMR (200 AED) .
• Travelers who do not fall under the G1 countries list  must either be a spouse or a child of the G1 countries national to be able to apply online for an e-visa (choose 26F visa).
• If a traveler is not from the G1 countries list but they have a valid Schengen visa or a valid visa to one of the following countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia or Japan) they can apply for 26M type of visa (if their country is in the list of allowed nationalities).
• 26F and 26B visas cost 20 OMR (200 AED) and allow 30 days stay in Oman.

In other cases, travellers might have to obtain an Oman visit visa via the Oman embassy in their country of residence. Alternatively can use visa application services on  ivisa .

IMPORTANT:  Passport holders who do not qualify for a UAE visa on arrival, must have a multiple-entry UAE tourist visa. Single-entry UAE tourist visa holders will not be allowed to enter Musandam.

Passport validity

All passports must be valid for at least 6 months during your visit to Oman. 

Dubai/Oman Common visa for tourists in the UAE

21A Dubai/Oman Common visa  is a free Oman tourist visa on arrival available for UAE tourist visa holders who fall under a list of  Dubai-Oman Joint Visa countries** . The requirement for this visa is that your UAE tourist visa must be valid for at least 21 days before entering Oman. You must also enter Oman through the Hatta-Al Wajajah border.

However, I am not sure how many days you can stay in Oman with the Dubai-Oman Common visa. I would guess that up to 10.

**Dubai-Oman Joint Visa Countries:  Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Britain, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Japan, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, and Vatican City.

IMPORTANT INFO! You may find information online that you may not need a visa to travel to Oman if you are a passport holder of one of the 103 countries and regions that are exempt from entry visas for stays shorter than 14 days. This information is provided by Foreign Ministry of Oman .

I have contacted the Royal Police of Oman to clarify additional information about the above and it turned out that in order to enter visa free for 14 days you must provide valid hotel reservation, valid health insurance, and a return flight ticket . Thus, this type of visa is only applicable if you are traveling to Oman by air as opposed to driving from UAE.

Oman e-visa processing times

Oman e-visa processing times on average are 24 hours, but can take up to 4 working days. From my experience of applying several times, you can get an Oman visa in a few minutes, hours, or days. Therefore, apply a week before your trip to be on the safe side. It never took me longer than 5 days to receive an Oman e-visa. 

What if I do not get my e-visa on time before my trip? 

For UAE residents, you could still get a visit visa on the Oman border if your passport is eligible for a visa on arrival. If you are on a tourist visa in the UAE, you can get a regular Oman tourist visa on arrival. You must check beforehand if your passport is eligible for a visa on arrival.

Oman travel regulations: vaccination, PCR test requirements, health insurance

UPDATE: All Covid-19 regulations for entering Oman have been lifted from May 2022. Please refer to Oman Air website to confirm. UAE has also lifted all COVID-19 related restrictions end of 2022.

While pandemic-related regulations have been lifted, it is still strongly advisable to have travel insurance . I always obtain one when traveling. FAQ about traveling from Dubai to Oman by road

Are there gas stations on the highway driving from dubai to muscat.

A word of warning about the gas stations after entering Oman by car from the Hatta-Al-Wajajah border. Make sure you fill-up the tank immediately at the first petrol station you see in Oman. If you miss that one, there will be another 2 or 3 petrol stations recently opened on the new highway from Dubai to Muscat. Yet don’t drive with an empty tank as the distances in between the petrol stations are over 100 kilometers. Also, bring some snacks and plenty of water. The last time I drove past the highway, petrol stations only had petrol but the food store was still under construction.

Can I buy an Oman SIM card at the border?

You cannot purchase Oman sim card at the border (it used to be available at Hatta-Al-Wajajah border before). That means, you may have to use roaming for navigation or pre-download Google Maps until you reach Muscat, or Nizwa (depends where you are heading to). Oman Sim cards are available at bigger malls and Muscat Airport.

Currently, there are 6 UAE-Oman border crossing open for expats, Hatta-Alwajajah, Mezyad-Hafeet , Al Dhara (Khasab), Dibba checkpoint, Khatam al Shiklah, and Khatmat-Milaha.

How much is Oman visa for UAE residents arriving by road?

You can do a visa run through Oman by road. Hatta-Al-Wajajah border is the one people usually use for visa runs.

Do I need a 4WD to go to Oman? 

You will need a 4 WD in Oman if you are planning to drive steep narrow roads into the mountains or remote villages, unpaved roads, or deserts. However, roads in Oman are in excellent shape and you can still reach many highlights with a regular car. 

Also, note that many rental companies will not allow you to take a 4WD for off-roading (do it at your own risk basically). This kind of defeats the purpose if you are getting 4×4 for off-roading.

However, you would still benefit from 4WD if you only plan to use the paved road to reach Jebel Akhdar or some small mountain villages located deep in the mountains. It is compulsory to drive 4WD if you want to explore this Jebel Akhdar mountain peak. There are checkpoints, and for your own safety, it is not allowed to drive 2WD to Jebel Akhdar.

Can I travel from Dubai to Oman by bus?

There is a bus from Dubai to Muscat operated by ‘ Al Khanjry Transport ‘. The one-way ticket costs 100 AED and the journey takes around 7-8 hours including border crossing.

Is there a train from Dubai to Oman?

Currently, there is no rain from Dubai to Oman. However, Etihad Rail has signed an agreement with Arsenale, and is building a luxury rail service running from Abu Dhabi through Liwa desert to the Omani border. Interestingly, there will be 15 luxury coaches that are currently being produced in Puglia and Sicily, Italy.

As per the information you provided, it seems the Hatta – Al Wajajah border is currently open. However, given the frequent changes to the land border accessibility due to Covid, I would like to know whether the border is open just before I start the travel.

I do not have the contact number of the border, but when I googled, I got these ones listed +971 4 852 1002 and 800 5111. Hi Danielle, you don’t need any permit or visa to enter Madha. There is no border or post control. The only difference you may notice will be Oman plate number and the signal of your mobile network may disappear or switch to roaming.

Hi, Curious Traveller, regarding visa run, it depends which passport you hold, if that is the procedure you can do. But those people who are allowed to do visa runs, don’t need to stay in Oman, they just cross the border and come back immediately. PCR should be valid, at least it was last month for 14 days.. Try contacting some of those companies who help with visa runs, they should know all the latest info.

Hi Shoaib, I am glad you find this information helpful. Regarding NOC format, I honestly don’t know, try calling the insurance company and ask for advice, or maybe RTA. I am guessing it is just a written printed and signed form stating all the details of the owner and the person borrowing the car, car details, and saying that the owner does not object to their car being driven by that person, contact details of both parties as well. Regarding travel insurance, that is information officially stated across many sources, such as airlines and news sites. I was not asked at the border for health insurance, but this is one of the requirements (not sure why for a month though, maybe because of the visit visa length). The cheapest option so far is with Safety Wing- there is a link to it in this post if you scroll up. The price will be defined according to your age (you will be able to see it once you fill out the details), it is around 40 USD for a month.

Hi Geraldine, depending on your residency visa, and/or passport (not sure if you are a tourist to both countries or a resident of one of them), you will need visit visas for UAE and Oman (maybe you passport allows visa on arrival which makes things simple). If you don’t have multiple entry visas, you will have to get UAE visa to enter UAE first, and then Oman visa again to enter Musandam. On the way back from Musandam, you again have to get UAE visa, and the same applies to Oman visa if you are traveling back to Muscat. You must check entry rules according to your passport. Oman visa can be easily obtained online in advance. UAE, I am not sure as I am a resident of UAE. Regarding PCR, UAE requires it to be not more than 48 hours old, while Oman – not more 72 hours old. You would have to check if you can use the same PCR test that you have done in Oman to go to UAE and then to Musandam (I would believe you should be able to). However, I don’t know if you can do PCR at the border. I would better do it in Muscat if I was you. Note that you may have to do another PCR in Musandam (Khasab most likely) to go back to UAE. And hopefully, you can use the same result to go back to Muscat if it is within 72 hours. Let me know how it goes once you have done your trip.

Hi Shabeena, yes Hatta border which is called Al Wajajah, is open for everyone and there are no separate entrances- the same way and entrance for both citizens and residents. Google shares this number for Oman side Hatta border: +968 26 849920 I never called borders before so not sure how it works, but you are welcome to try.

Hi Ali, answering yur questions below: 1. Exit fee is per person 2. According to official requirements, yes 3. I believe so, insurance company will provide it free of charge (it was our case- we had cover,they just issued the paper) 4. Kindly ask the bank, but when I traveled with my leased car years ago, I didn’t have NOC from the bank and it was fine. 5. I do not know the exact age, but I have heard small kids are. 6. Registering on the travel site is freem just have all you pcr test results and vaccine papers ready to be uploaded (I believe you refer the Oman website for travel registration)

Hello. I am traveling from London to Dubai then by car to zighy bay. Have the pcr rules changed now to 48 hours rather than 14 days? I’m worried about testing positive whilst at zighy bay when taking the pcr in order to travel back to Dubai. I expect there will be lots of kids at hotel who haven’t been vaccinated or tested as under 12. Do you know what would happen to me and my family if I did test positive?

Hi Rachel, I haven’t heard or seen articles about changes so far. The best would be to ask the hotel in Zighy Bay, they must be aware of the most recent rules. In the unlucky scenario, if the test comes out positive, you would have to quarantine in Oman most likely.

Hi Ahmed, I am not fully aware on visa run process as I have never done it before. However, I have heard that certain nationalities just have to cross Oman border and drive in back again. They don’t even need to stay in Oman. It is done as quickly as half a day almost. Also, there used to be companies you take people by bus for visa run purposes for some fee, not sure if they still around though.

You can use the same test to come back to Dubai, it will be valid for 14 days (somebody went to Oman and back using the same test just a week ago, so the same procedure is still in place). 2. Hi Essie, someone I know crossed Hatta border a couple of weeks ago, and 14 days PCR was valid. However, the Mezyad border is part of Abu Dhabi emirate, and they have different rules when it comes to PCR validity. Therefore it’s worth checking the latest rules for entering Abu Dhabi.

Can i cross mazyad border by walking.. i have all the documents.. because my family will wait me in the oman side.. is it possible to go by walking

Hi Shabeer, I believe you should be able to walk through the border, but I do not know 100%. The best is to call the border and ask if this is allowed. Also, check the distance between UAE and Oman border posts. The Mezyad border seems to be less than 2 km between the checkpoints, but others, like Hatta Al Wajajah or Khatam Al Shiklah are far away from each other (not a walking distance).

I am Indian citizen working in UAE with UAE residence. I am planning to travel through Khatmat Al Shikla border to Oman and same day planning to visit back to UAE (Fujairah) through Khatmat Malahah border. Is this possible?

Hi Mohammed, yes, you can enter Oman through one border and leave through the other border. Both are open as far as I know.

In one day your best bet is to visit Musandam instead of mainland Oman. But if you are going to mainland Oman through Hatta border, then you can visit Muscat. Hi Abraham, you can travel to Oman during Ramadan as well, the only thing that may not be as pleasant is the hot weather. Regarding unvaccinated travelers, I am not sure what would be the procedure- I could not find any precise online information about this matter. But I believe with a negative PCR test you can enter. As far as I have heard, quarantine was also removed. The best would be to call Oman Airlines, or Oman immigration and check with them as they would have the exact latest updates.

Hi Usama, if you are travelling from Hatta border to Muscat, take the old road that is closer to the coats- there are plenty of restaurants along the way. Ehile the newer and a bit faster road going to Muscat doesn’t even have petrol stations (at least we haven’t seen any for many kilometer after crossing the border).

Hi Jonrey, please contact immigration for this matter to give you a clear answer. I can only guess that if your Oman residency has not been canceled, you should be able to travel, but I am not sure how you can have two valid residencies at the same time?

I just renewed my vehicle registration on 12-July and wait for physical registration card. Now I plan for a week to Oman starting from 16 July. So will there be issue with electronic copy of registration at border crossing ?

Prasad, I believe electronic registration should be valid, make sure you also have insurance for driving in Oman (orange card), or you can purchase one at the border as well.

I was advised by my broker that I can purchase an Orange Card at the border at Dibba Corniche for aprox AED100. Is this correct? UAE rains: Intercity bus services suspended due to unstable weather

The RTA announces a temporary halt in service due to the weather situation

Dubai: The intercity bus service between Dubai - Abu Dhabi, Dubai - Sharjah and Dubai - Ajman was suspended on Tuesday evening, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said on its X account.

The RTA added that the temporary pause in the service is due to the unstable weather situation , which brought heavy rains and flooded many roads.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) issued an amber alert on Tuesday aftertnoon but was upgraded to red by Tuesday evening.

“Hazardous weather events of exceptional severity are forecast,” the NCM alert indicates.

Atypically heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates on Monday and Tuesday caused flooding, flight cancellations and school closures. Vehicles were abandoned on highways like this one in Dubai.

DUBAI — Schools and businesses have been closed across the United Arab Emirates after the country experienced about year's worth of rain in one day.

The flooding also disrupted travel at Dubai International Airport, which is the world's busiest for international travel.

Videos posted online showed residents sweeping rainwater out of their homes and luxury cars stranded in Dubai's flooded streets, after a storm unleashed the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the country since the start of data collection 75 years ago. That was well before the country was founded.

Dubai's high-end stores weren't spared either, as rainwater gushed through the ceilings of shopping malls. At Dubai's main airport, the runway flooded and flagship carrier Emirates suspended all departing flights on Wednesday. The local Gulf News reported more than 1,200 flights were canceled due to Tuesday's storms. The airport is expected to return to fully operational by Friday.

The city, known for its year-round sunny weather and beaches, saw sunshine later in the week, but schools remained remote due to road closures.

Despite some damage to cars, homes and roads, the UAE's state news agency says the rainfall boosts the country's groundwater reserves.

Rainfall in nearby Oman is blamed for more than 20 deaths this week, including 10 children swept away in a car on their way home from school Monday, according to state-owned media there.

The desert nation of UAE records its most rain ever, flooding highways and Dubai's airport

D UBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates attempted to dry out Wednesday from the heaviest rain the desert nation has ever recorded — a deluge that flooded out Dubai International Airport and disrupted flights through the world's busiest airfield for international travel.

The state-run WAM news agency called the rain Tuesday “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.” That's before crude oil was discovered in this energy-rich nation then part of a British protectorate known as the Trucial States.

Rain also fell in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but was acute across the UAE.

The flooding sparked speculation that cloud seeding — flying small planes through clouds dispersing chemicals aimed at getting rain to fall — may have contributed to the deluge. But experts said the storm systems that produced the rain were forecast well in advance and that cloud seeding alone would not have caused such flooding.

Several reports quoted meteorologists at the National Center for Meteorology as saying they flew six or seven cloud-seeding flights before the rains. Flight-tracking data analyzed by The Associated Press showed one aircraft affiliated with the UAE’s cloud-seeding efforts flew around the country Monday.

The National, an English-language, state-linked newspaper in Abu Dhabi, quoted an anonymous official at the center on Wednesday as saying no cloud seeding took place on Tuesday, without acknowledging any earlier flights.

The center did not respond to questions Wednesday from the AP.

The UAE, which heavily relies on energy-hungry desalination plants to provide water, conducts cloud seeding in part to increase its dwindling, limited groundwater .

Jeff Masters, a meteorologist for Yale Climate Connections, said the flooding in Dubai was caused by an unusually strong low pressure system that drove many rounds of heavy thunderstorms.

“You don’t need cloud seeding’s influence to account for the record deluge in Dubai,” Masters said.

Another expert, Steven Siems of Australia's Monash University, agreed.

Given the size of the storm, any seeding effort would simply be pointless," he said. “Nature is already doing the job perfectly well.”

Scientists also say climate change in general is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme storms, droughts, floods and wildfires around the world. Dubai hosted the United Nations' COP28 climate talks just last year. Rising temperatures and other effects of global warming long have been viewed as a threat to life in the already-baking region.

The rains began late Monday, soaking the sands and roadways of Dubai with some 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) of rain, according to meteorological data collected at Dubai International Airport. The storms intensified around 9 a.m. Tuesday and continued throughout the day, dumping more rain and hail onto the overwhelmed city.

By the end of Tuesday, more than 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 94.7 millimeters (3.73 inches) of rain at Dubai International Airport.

Standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. Arrivals were halted Tuesday night, and passengers struggled to reach terminals through water-covered roads.

One couple, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to speak freely in a country with strict laws that criminalize critical speech, called the situation at the airport “absolute carnage.”

“You cannot get a taxi. There's people sleeping in the Metro station. There's people sleeping in the airport,” the man said Wednesday.

Dubai International Airport acknowledged Wednesday morning that the flooding had left “limited transportation options” and affected flights as aircraft crews couldn't reach the airfield.

“Recovery will take some time,” the airport said on the social platform X.

Long-haul carrier Emirates and FlyDubai, its low-cost sister airline, had major disruptions.

Paul Griffiths, the airport's CEO, acknowledged continued issues with flooding Wednesday morning, saying every place an aircraft could be safely parked was taken. Some aircraft had been diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, the city-state's second airfield.

“It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye. “We are in uncharted territory."

Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, also temporarily suspended flights between Cairo and Dubai due to the bad weather.

Schools across the UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, largely shut ahead of the storm and government employees were largely working remotely if able. Many workers stayed home as well, though some ventured out, with the unfortunate stalling out their vehicles in deeper-than-expected water covering spots on some roads. That included parts of the Sheikh Zayed Road, a 12-lane highway through downtown Dubai.

Authorities sent tanker trucks out into the streets and highways to pump away the water. Water poured into some homes, forcing people to bail out their houses.

The country's hereditary rulers offered no overall damage or injury information for the nation, as some slept in their flooded vehicles Tuesday night. In Ras al-Khaimah, the country's northernmost emirate, police said one 70-year-old man died when his vehicle was swept away by floodwater.

Khatm al-Shakla, an area near Al Ain in Abu Dhabi, saw 254 millimeters (10 inches) of rain Tuesday, the most anywhere in the country, officials said.

Authorities canceled school and the government instituted remote work again for Wednesday. Dubai later closed schools for the rest of the week.

Rain is unusual in the UAE, an arid, Arabian Peninsula nation, but occurs periodically during the cooler winter months. Many roads and other areas lack drainage given the lack of regular rainfall, causing flooding.

Meanwhile in neighboring Oman, a sultanate that rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, at least 19 people were killed in heavy rains in recent days, according to a statement Wednesday from the country's National Committee for Emergency Management. That includes some 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult, which saw condolences come into the country from rulers across the region.
