Like all lists, people will wonder why they’re not on it. I’m positive I missed some good ones, but this is very loose criteria I’d be using if I were hired to cast, produce or pitch a TV show. Creators did not need to meet all criteria, but most. – Programming: Weekly dedication, quality, storytelling & individual style execution – Audience: Niche, loyalty, & YouTube friendly – Blog worthy and/or binge worthy – Does it bring a new spin to the term “travel video” or “travel show” – Channel Personality/Talent: brand recognition, hosting & entertainment value

If you’re anything like me, your YouTube home feed includes a lot of travel stories, with food and travel vloggers, around the world explorers, van life channels, and outdoor adventurers.

Watching travel videos helps me decide where to travel next in the world, and what exactly to do once I get there.

In person travel around the world is difficult with the pandemic right now, so I’ve loved watching travel adventures virtually from my favorite YouTubers. It’s a wonderful way to mentally escape the stress and uncertainty of the last year.

YouTube has more than 2 billion (yes, that’s billion with a b ) monthly logged in users. If you’re a prospective travel vlogger, getting your videos on YouTube can be as easy as filming a video, editing with a video editor , and uploading. Because getting started on YouTube can be so simple, that’s meant plenty of vloggers, with interesting stories to tell, are on the platform.

Many of my favorite vloggers introduce viewers to bucket list travel adventures around the world, while others stay closer to home.

Several travel bloggers on this list, like Kara and Nate, made the transition from around-the-word travel videos to van life during the pandemic. Others have bought and renovated isolated cabins, while others continue their adventures locally.

I enjoy watching their current adventures, but it’s also a great time to dig back in the archives and watch older videos. I even check out a few classic travel TV shows from time to time!

Kara and Nate 2.1 Million YouTube Subscribers

I just found Kara and Nate’s channel in the last year. It’s fantastic, and I wish I’d found it sooner! Kara and Nate are a husband and wife team from Nashville Tennessee, who traveled to 100 countries before travel slowed down in 2020.

The production quality of this channel is fantastic, with high quality videography, and great audio as well. These days, they’re making content driving through the USA in a van, with plenty of stops at interesting accommodations and attractions along the way.

Eamon and Bec 782K YouTube subscribers

Eamon and Bec are a Canadian couple that I started watching when they were travelling around Europe and Morocco in their self converted Sprinter van. There’s plenty of gorgeous content on here about their travels, their vegan recipes (they even have a vegan cookbook), and life on the road.

These days, Eamon and Bec are vlogging about renovating their cabin in the woods of Ontario, Canada.

Foresty Forest 245K YouTube subscribers

Foresty Forest is the real deal, if you’re interested in bicycle touring, ascending mountains, and the great outdoors. His crockpot makes frequent appearances, with simple home cooked meals made in the van.

This is old school YouTube, without paid sponsorships, or paid reviews.

You’ll find yourself singing the insanely catchy theme song, “ Foresty Forest, he lives in a van… Foresty Forest! “

I always catch myself smiling when there’s a new Foresty Forest upload.

Christian Schaffer – 70K subscribers

Christian makes her living as an outdoor adventure and travel photographer, and was a former Abercrombie model and retail manager.

As you’d expect, her travel videography is beautiful, but the channel is also packed full of thoughtful, intelligent tips about van life, making money, and life in general.

The Wild Card: Tom Green 267K YouTube subscribers

Bet you didn’t expect to find Tom Green on this list!

Tom is best known as a comedian, whose career started on MTV in the 1990s. He’s known for quirky and often pretty juvenile comedy like the Bum Bum Song , the Slutmobile , and Hollywood films Road Trip and Charlie’s Angels, as well as being married to Drew Barrymore in the early 2000s.

These days, Green seems a lot more introspective, as he’s vlogging his van life with his adorable dog, Charlie. Green’s still a quirky mix, with gorgeous cinematography, visits to stunning and out of the way places, musical offerings, and rambling, free-form live streams.

Slim Potatohead is something of an outlier among travel vlogs.

There’s definitely good videography and storytelling here, but this is not the vlog for you if you’re looking for fast paced, high excitement travel. Slim meanders along on his adventures, and it often seems like very little happens in a given blog. That said, he’s definitely an authentic voice that’s well worth checking out.

He travels pulling a small older trailer, spending plenty of time off grid in nature. Older videos feature the USA and Mexico, but these days he’s focusing on travel within Canada. There are videos on frugal camper renovations, camping spots, and plenty of exploring and meandering.

Enthusiastic and energetic, Mark Wiens is a food vlogger who shares about South East Asia from his home base in Bangkok, Thailand.

I was first introduced to Mark’s Migrationology blog back in 2012, and I’ve loved following his transition to being one of YouTube’s most popular food and travel vloggers.

He features plenty of street food videos, with a strong focus on Thai food and travel.

Tyler and Todd are one of my absolute favorite channels. They’re funny, engaging, and have absolutely gorgeous videography and solid audio.

They’re a Canadian couple who travel with their adorable dogs Charlie and Eddy.

Because of the pandemic, they’re currently not traveling, but I’ve loved following along as they make a home in Nova Scotia, building an off grid cabin.

Incredibly personable and funny, they’re a treat to watch each week.

Vancity Vanlife 145K YouTube subscribers

Vancity Vanlife features Chrome and his adorable bulldog pup, Cruz.

Chrome is a former professional DJ, so this is a fantastic channel if you love great music and great audio. As a former DJ, he has a fantastic voice for audio.

He uploads almost every day, and this channel is a throwback to early daily vlogs of YouTube. Videos are based mostly around Vancouver, British Columbia, but he does sojourn around Canada and into the USA when he’s able. It’s a great channel to get a feel for daily van life realities.

Drew Binsky 2.34 Million YouTube subscribers

Drew, an American YouTuber, is definitely an engaging, entertaining presence on YouTube. He’s also controversial, as he continued traveling during the pandemic, and he’s garnered criticism for visiting countries like North Korea.

This is the type of channel that you’ll likely either love or hate.

Favorite travel video: He is the Ice Man (Wim Hof)

Project Amber 57K YouTube subscribers

Project Amber follows the adventures of a UK vlogger and his adorable Spaniel puppy, Lance as they travel in a converted ex-ambulance.

There’s plenty of great content in the archives that features road trips around the UK and Europe.

The man and dog duo just bought off-grid land in Portugal, and I’m looking forward to watching his local Portuguese adventures.

Lost in Europe

Ash Pollard of Lost in Europe is a 27 year old photographer from Leicester/England.

As the channel title suggests, he mostly features van travel around Europe. There’s some gorgeous videography here, and I’ve loved his time in Scotland, as well has his new content on van life in the winter.

Bald and Bankrupt 2.66 Million subscribers

Bald and Bankrupt follows the adventures of English travel vlogger Benjamin Rich, who mostly focuses on visiting post-Soviet states.

This channel is much more about meeting everyday people, and getting to know them and their lives, than cinematic scenes and views. It’s great entertainment, and I love that it focuses on getting to know people.

Like Drew Binsky, Rich has travelled during the pandemic. Rich was hospitalized for nine days for coronavirus in July 2020 in Serbia, which was not under lockdown at the time. He admitted that he was “blasé” about the pandemic, and has cautioned his viewers to take the pandemic seriously.

There’s a lot of travel-based content on YouTube.

If you want yours to stand out, you can’t expect to just throw together some footage and hit publish.

Instead, here are some key ideas to help your travel videos be more memorable:

Hook your audience with your footage: The first 3 seconds of your videos are crucial. You can use dramatic footage, an unknown landscape, fly over a majestic landscape or use captivating audio. Anything that’s ‘out of the norm’ will do the trick.
Ask questions: Travel videos are generally one-sided. The content creator presents content and the viewers watch and listen. Asking questions makes viewers active participants in your videos. The more engaging the question, the better. Asking, “Can you travel around the world using $100?” is a more engaging question than, “Did you know you can travel on a budget?”
Use teasers: At various points during your video, you can tease what’s coming next in that video (or in future ones). This gives people a reason to keep watching.

Travel Planning And Research

Planning and research play a huge part in creating engaging travel videos.

When planning, the first thing to consider is how you’ll differentiate your travel content.

Most travel videos explore common tourist areas, markets and well-known landscapes.

What if you go off the beaten path? Could you show your audience unique and lesser-known destinations or experiences? Sharing hidden gems will make your content different.

Are there any local festivals or hidden culinary delights your viewers must try?

You can also create travel itineraries for your viewers.

Here you’re not only providing your audience with visual walkthroughs of attractions. You’re also telling them the best order to visit them.

If you can create plans for different numbers of days in a city, (for example, 3 days in Paris, 5 days in Sicily) that will be even better.

How To Capture Great Travel Footage

Another way to stand out is to have variety in your travel footage.

Most people show a zoomed-in version of whatever they’re filming (and stick to it throughout the video). Instead, try this: don’t always stay too close to your subject.

People love seeing different points of view. You achieve this through varying shot lengths.

You might want to start with close-ups of food, crafts or architecture. Then, zoom out to show the big picture.

You can even have talking head videos (where a person is talking on camera). Then at various moments, you overlay B-roll footage of an attraction you’re talking about.

Two other crucial factors are lighting and audio.

Natural lighting is the best type of lighting. Usually, the golden hour (when the sun is rising and setting) offers excellent opportunities to film travel videos.

Your audio is another critical factor.

Use a portable microphone if possible to capture the best quality sound.

This little touch goes a long way when filming outdoors – especially if the video has background noise (including wind, waves, or crowds).

Increasing Audience Engagement

Creating YouTube content means you’re not publishing videos for yourself. You’re doing it primarily for your audience.

You want people to engage time and time again with your content. This engagement can become the foundation of a travel community.

Over time, you want your viewers to look forward to your content. You want them to watch, like, subscribe and comment.

As you build a community of like-minded people, ensure you have calls to action in your videos. These should match whatever you’re trying to achieve.

For example, if you want to create a “travel hacks” course, ask people to join your email list or follow you on Instagram to learn more.

If you want them to subscribe, be clear and explicit about it.

How to Make Travel Videos for YouTube

As a travel filmmaker, I find adventure in making travel videos for YouTube. Travel is unpredictable and I while I aim for video ideas, I never truly know how my travel stories will turn out, until I get my footage home and into the editing bay.

So how to make travel videos for YouTube? Starting a YouTube channel starts with defining your personal brand and niche audience. Brand foundation will define your travel channel and the trips you will ultimately take for it.

Whether i’m hired to film a corporate event in a downtown office or be a shooter on a crew filming an interview in a Honolulu home… travel in its varied forms excites me and I typically work/collaborate with a film crew. But for GRRRLTRAVELER, the travel videos I make for my YouTube channel audiences, encapsulates the adventure of a solo female traveler with international bucket list goals.

Whatever your brand and channel’s interests are… that is what you are filming and traveling for.

How to Make a Travel Video for Beginners (Summary)

1. Trip Coordinating

As a travel and food YouTuber, my goal is to engineer the best travel video ideas and obviously, I don’t want to drain my savings on a film trip. So the big work happens before I take a trip. Filming travel videos for destinations requires – r esearching video and trip ideas, balancing budget, pitching sponsorship, and strategizing how you’ll get paid for your time and expense. My shoot schedule and video ideas take precedence over a personal trip. Your goal is to get the best content and video stories which will inspire travel audiences.

If you’re starting a travel channel on YouTube, you will be a travel videographer filming videos around your personal vacation and budget. But starting out, there is a hunger and a passion to creativity. You’re exploring the destination for yourself as a traveler and then through your camera which gives it a new perspective and dimension.

Back in the day, many budget travel audiences aligned with my brand, because I was trying to do everything- film and vacation- with my personal pocket money and my livelihood and freelance video earnings outside of my channel. My ideas were a result of my personal travel budget.

Today, my budget and trip planning revolves around my video ideas, my channel and engineering the best evergreen video, which will grow in views, monetization and will provide an invaluable peek into traveling solo in a destination.

As you grow an audience, you need to find more ways to make your channel sustainable without dipping into your pocket for everything. Pitching sponsorship and tourism boards becomes a necessity for most travel content creators. The only time you do not need sponsors is if your channel has healthy traffic/income and a following.

2. Prepping film gear for a trip

Travel is unpredictable- things go awry and equipment can get damaged or stolen. You need it to be thoughtful of the camera gear you pack to ensure all goes smoothly in the field. Weather and climate, changing environmental conditions can affect gear, as do your activities and what type of camera coverage you need.

In Italy , I was scheduled to film a cooking class with an Italian grandma. I was told there would be a couple of her family members there and maybe another grandma. But when I arrived, there were family members and four Italian grandmas and I had to quickly change my idea of how I would film the cooking class while keeping noise at a minimum for filming. Luckily it all worked out.

Filming a road trip to the Arctic Ocean in sub-degree weather, I knew the winter weather would drain my camera batteries quickly, so I needed to buy extra batteries before my trip. Your environment will change and you must change with it. What is your video about? What is the travel challenge or goal you are undertaking? Why should your audience be interested in watching it? State your goal up front with a video introduction.

Video introductions force a creator to be clear and intentional about their video idea. Yes, you should have an idea before you start filming. Video introductions also prep your audience as to what they’re going to see and the value they’re going to get from watching your video. Audiences need to know what they’re stopping their scroll for.

4. Popular types of footage for storytelling

Varying your shots between broll , vlogging and voiceover narration- helps travel audiences experience your virtual trip for themselves. Video is a visual language and shoot style to shot choices tell a story in a more visceral way.

Although you can film an entire travel video with just vlogging – many YouTube personality-based vloggers do this- it is far more interesting to watch a travel video of sweeping panoramic shots, closeup shots of cultural detail, with a sprinkle of vlogging footage to share your travel experiences.

B-roll (aka beauty roll) : Alternative shots which help tell a story.

Voiceover Narration : scripting your ideas, recording them and adding them in during the editing process.

5. What music should you use in travel videos?

Epidemic Sound has one of the best and largest music libraries. Although it is subscription based, it is popular with YouTubers, because it is a curated library. This means you don’t need to waste hours researching and listening to 30 songs to find one good one which works for your type of video. And you don’t have to worry about researching usage permissions.

I’ve tried other music libraries through Tastemade MCN (an MCN I was with a long time ago) and while they’re okay, the moment you unhook from the MCN, you have to go through the process of reverifying your usage permissions for all the music you used when you were under them. I’ve also tried SoundCloud . I only recommend it if you have quantities of time to spend researching music and looking for copyright free music.

6. Editing is the art of curating and sculpting

Video editing shapes the story. It is also your second chance to clean up your filming and hosting. This is the second seat of storytelling power and guideline for editing a travel video for YouTube should be focused value .

Audiences are paying with their TIME so they will be selective with where they invest it. In fact, many YouTube viewers will abandon a video in the first 8-15 seconds, if you’re not engaging or your video fails to deliver an expected value.

A naive travel filmmaking creator makes videos selfishly for themselves and what they want to see; there is no story. A good travel YouTuber -on the other hand- makes their travel video story of value to others. They film, edit and curate footage with their audiences in mind. They choose footage which communicates a story.

Launching a travel YouTube channel can be quite the task; especially, when you’re not sure what to upload. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of travel YouTube channel ideas to help you fill up your content calendar.

Even if you’ve already started uploading videos to your channel, you may find these video ideas helpful. Also, this list might help jog your creativity to come up with even more video concepts!

Travel YouTube Channel Ideas

1. Airport Vlog

What’s the difference between an airport vlog and a travel vlog? An airport vlog is more focused on getting to a destination than the destination itself.

For example, if you’re taking a 15 hour flight or have a 24 hour travel day you can vlog about your experience and how you survive such a long travel day. You can also talk about flying with a specific airline, what the food on the plane was like, and how the different airports were.

This is also a good time to throw in a little airport ootd or what’s in my carry on.

2. Pack With Me

Pack with mes are another popular video idea for travel youtube channels. Whether you’re packing for a cruise, Disneyland, or a tropical getaway, a pack with me video is a great way to share packing tips with your audience.

You can share things like what toiletries you’re bringing, how you keep things organized, what outfits you’re bringing, etc. You can also include affiliate links in your video description to help generate some income. I use RewardStyle for style and Amazon products.

Share with your audience what destinations you’re dying to visit.

People are always looking for suggestions on where to travel and by sharing your bucket list you may just be influencing their next vacation!

4. General Travel Tips

General travel tip videos are another great travel YouTube channel idea. Again, this is an opportunity to educate your audience. While we like to think everyone’s traveled before, there’s tons of people who may be taking their first trip ever at any given time.

In these videos, you can share ways to save money, packing hacks, tips for a better plane ride, etc.

5. Destination Specific Travel Tips

Piggybacking off of general travel tips, is destination specific travel tips.

While general travel tips will serve many travelers, destination specific tips are for those visiting a particular place. You could also think of this as a “Know Before You Go” type video. For example, a Positano travel video might include things like the best time to go to avoid crowds, what airport to fly into and the transfer options, how to get around the area, and other info visitors might find helpful.

6. Travel Vlog

If you’re starting a travel youtube channel, chances are you’ve already planned on doing travel vlogs. Depending on the trip, I will either break my travel vlogs down by destination or by day. For example, for my 10 day trip to Spain and Portugal , I did a vlog for each city we visited. However, for Disneyland I did two vlogs, one per day we were there.

Very few people will sit around and watch a 40 minute travel vlog. So, I like to break down the content into more digestible segments.

7. Travel Essentials

Sharing Amazon Travel Must-Haves or general travel essentials is another popular video idea for travel YouTube channels.

Planning for a travel video includes everything from ideation and scripting to location scouting and storyboarding. But all of these processes look very different from how you would do these for regular videos – for the sole reason that there is a huge amount of uncertainty that comes with the process of travel. (1) Ideation

Ideating for a travel video begins with deciding upon a location and then figuring out in what light do you want to present that location. Do you want to create an educational video on the place or showcase its culture or is there a particularly interesting story about the place that you want to bring to light? Your answers to these questions form the basis of your idea.

(2) Research

Once your idea is ready, you want to go ahead and gather as much information as you can about the place – through blogs, youtube videos, personal anecdotes, and even interviews. You want to look up images and videos to get an understanding of what the place looks and feels like. This is super important in helping you plan out your shots later.

(3) Outlining

Once you have the idea and your basic research in place, you want to create a rough outline of the flow of your video. This is where the storytelling aspect kicks in. Mind you this is not a full-fledged script because that isn’t really possible at this stage. With the outline, you want to ask questions such as how do you want to start your video? What is the hook? Now this is not something that you have complete control over. When shooting travel videos you want to think about what that place represents and what emotion it evokes. That is what you want to capture in your shots. Everybody wants to do videos these days.

There are more and more people and business competing for views, likes, shares and subscribers on YouTube and pretty much any other social media platforms.

I know that first hand from the people I’m doing the video editing for.

Getting traction on YouTube is much harder than it was just 12 months ago. Not sure if that’s because of all the competition or it’s just how the algorithm works.

Some say you need to post 100 videos before you start to see results.

Some say it’s 80% luck and 20% work.

Some say it’s consistency .

Originality.

You get the idea.

Now, I don’t think that the traveling niche is that different than other verticals, but since I’m working mostly with clients in this category, I decided to target the question specifically to this niche.

So I asked content creators what do they think it’s working right now on YouTube. What would their #1 tip for growing a travel YouTube channel be?

Before we move forward, please note that we reached out to content creators of all sizes. So in this post you’ll find people that have hundreds of thousands of subscribers as well as channels that are just starting out.

I think the input we got back was great and hopefully helpful.

My number one tip would be…

Ah, I have too many to limit to one! Ultimately, be authentic and helpful. In practical terms, don’t neglect the text beneath your video!

There’s no simple answer for how to grow on Youtube, which is actually a good thing because that makes it more interesting, challenging and open to your own creativity.

Success on Youtube depends on a lot of different factors: how much work you put it into it, your personality, your editing skills, your story-telling skills and oftentimes just plain luck.

But if it’s a travel channel, then the most important thing is pretty simple: post lots of travel videos.

You can’t grow a travel channel by talking about traveling from the comfort of your home.

You’ll get a few views that way, but you aren’t going to get nearly as many views as you will if you’re posting videos from the places you’re actually talking about.

Be consistent. The more videos the better.

Quality is important of course. But if you’re too much of a perfectionist to the point that you’re only posting a few videos per month, that probably isn’t going to be great for your channel.

Travel videos don’t often go viral and get tons of views, so it’s better to expect that you’re going to need to post more videos rather than counting on one really good video getting a lot of views.

Try different angles. Post about food, show how much things cost, post about the people, give city tours,post adventure videos, show the cheapest options for food and accommodation and the more expensive options and just see what works better for you and what doesn’t seem to go anywhere.

Put yourself in the video. Travel content is generally more interesting with a narrator who has a story to share, so weave your own story into the videos while you’re also talking about the place.

Be creative in your editing. Find good music that’s a little different from the norm. Find music from the region that helps set the mood of being in that place. And as they say, just keep uploading.

So what makes you stand apart from the crowd is what’s going to matter.

Why should people watch you over the others?

Eg, when I decided to start Youtube and motorbiking and travel became my focus theme, I decided to differentiate it by adding cultural travel in it, because there were already hundreds of moto-travelers out there (especially if I talk about my home market India) but none of them were into local experiences and culture.

So that’s how I decided to differentiate myself.

If I post weekly I grow faster but as I love to edit for better storytelling, that’s not always possible.

If you are new to making travel videos, it’s worth remembering that Youtube is a video search engine.

With that in mind, you are likely to get more views if you research the topics and keywords that people are searching for both within Youtube and more generally and then tailor your videos to meet those search queries.

One of the best ways to generate traffic on a YouTube channel is with “Suggested Videos.”

YouTube automatically chooses other videos to “suggest” at the end of your video, and most times they are from a channel other than yours.

While creators have no choice about which videos are suggested when a video is viewed on the YouTube site, the situation is much different when videos are embedded into another site.

For instance, I create a video, upload it to YouTube, and create all my playlists and end screens, etc.

I then write a post on my blog about the video and embed it into that post, using the iframe code provided by YouTube.

However, I make one little change to the code.

At the end of the YouTube URL I add ?rel=0 before the closing quote mark.

If you look at anyone who is growing in this niche, the one thing they have in common is they release almost every day, and their content is always tied to the subject that they have built an audience around.

Also, do more of what you want and less sponsored content.

One thing I have noticed from YouTubers at around 250,000 subscribers is that they do a lot of sponsored content.

That can turn off viewers and even push your audience away.

I personally do very few sponsored videos, maybe 1-4 videos a month at the most.

The rest of my videos showcase what I love doing, which is eating and exploring!

One of the things I’ve always struggled with is posting consistently.

Obviously, the nature of being a travel blogger is you’re on the road a lot.

That means making time for filming and especially editing can be difficult.

That’s why I’ve always focused on quality content, and it seems to have worked for me.

Instead of pumping out semi-decent content, I’ve only ever posted premium content.

Even though this means I’m posting less than other YouTubers, I’m always really happy with what I put out.

I think you’ve got to find a style that works for you and stick with it!

Offer a formula that is refreshing, down to earth and exceeds in showing off your own character if you are in the video.

Otherwise, keep the video short with no long introductions.

Jump straight in – people already know who you are or what the video is about and if not – and they like you/it – will look around some more and subscribe.

Road Trips: How to Plan an Accessible Getaway

Planning an accessible road trip is getting a little easier for people with disabilities. There are more resources created by and for the disability community, and the tourism industry is starting to recognize the value of accessible travel. As a disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent person, I take road trips every year and have learned some tips and tricks along the way.

Renting a vehicle

Most major car companies offer adaptive driving devices for their vehicles at no additional cost. Enterprise , for example, offers hand controls, left foot accelerators, pedal extenders and spinner knobs to facilitate steering. Budget can provide hand controls, spinner knobs, a panoramic mirror, swivel seats and transfer boards. Be prepared to request adaptive devices at least three business days in advance.

For a wheelchair-accessible van with a ramp or a lift, rent from a mobility company like BraunAbility , one of the largest builders of wheelchair-accessible vans in the country, with rentals at many locations. MobilityWorks , an accessible-vehicle and adaptive-equipment dealer, has rental locations in 34 states. AccessibleGO , which offers a one-stop shop for adapted rental cars and wheelchair-accessible vans, has agreements with 100 wheelchair van rental locations nationwide; request a quote on their website. For accessibleGO’s rental cars, you can request hand controls and a spinner knob at checkout.

Route planning

You can use Google Maps, Waze and MapQuest for initial accessibility research using photos and street view. Google Maps provides directions for some wheelchair-accessible pedestrian and transit routes.

Sites such as Roadtrippers and Furkot can plot an entire itinerary. While these websites are not disability specific, they are invaluable tools. (Roadtrippers does have a wheelchair-accessible check box in the search function.) You can filter by types of destinations such as national parks or museums, and search for hotels and campgrounds. Furkot allows you to input how long you want to drive each day, whether you want to travel on Interstate highways or take more scenic roads. The app will determine the best route and length of time between stops, and suggest where to stay overnight.

Finding lodging

While hotels and other accommodations are required to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, many hotels do not meet all accessibility needs. Most of the booking sites list hotels with accessible rooms for those with mobility, hearing and vision needs, but this information is not always verified. Do additional research on review sites and look for photos. Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and Fairmont hotels offer allergy-friendly and scent-free rooms in some locations. Call the hotel to verify accessibility and to make sure a specific room is reserved for you.

Vacation rentals are typically not required to be A.D.A. compliant, but some do provide accessibility information. Airbnb recently rolled out an adapted category with accessibility search features and homes that have been scanned for accessibility. Review photos and contact the host for more information. Some hosts will make accommodations, such as changing the cleaning supplies or shifting furniture, but document your request using the in-app messaging system so that customer service can help if you run into issues.

Wheel the World is an accessible travel agency offering bookings at over 3,000 verified accessible hotels in the United States. The hotels have been reviewed in person by trained assessors; only those that meet the criteria are listed. Sign up as a disabled traveler or a companion and complete a personal profile that includes options for a variety of disabilities and accessibility needs. The site will provide listings that match your profile with partial, adequate and outstanding match options.

Food and medication

There are a variety of options to keep food or medication cold while traveling. Electric coolers can plug into your vehicle’s 12-volt outlet, but pay attention to the type of cooling mechanism — the less expensive versions are usually thermoelectric and will cool only to about 30 degrees below ambient temperature (if it is 70 degrees in the car, it will cool to 40 degrees). Compressor coolers are more expensive but maintain normal refrigerated temperatures.

Many hotels provide mini-refrigerators. When you know you will be stopping somewhere with a fridge almost every night, layer large ice packs and supplies in a cooler, then top them with another insulating layer like a cooling bag. This keeps everything cold for a couple of days at a time.

It’s also a good idea to travel with a single-burner cooktop — electric to use inside, or propane to use at rest areas and campgrounds — and a camp mess kit so that you can safely cook meals.

Some of the best apps to find food, restaurants and grocery stores that accommodate dietary needs are Fig for allergy-specific options, Happy Cow for vegan-friendly options and Find Me Gluten Free for celiac-safe spots. Add your favorite options to the route-planning app so that you know where to stop.

Finding activities

In addition to the apps mentioned in the route-planning section, state and local tourism organizations are good sources for accessible destinations.

National parks and monuments, which are required to meet federal accessibility guidelines, typically have visitor centers and recreation sites with accessible features. Each park website has information, as well as programs and services within the park. While accessibility varies, you can usually find information on wheelchair-accessible trails and campsites, tactile and audio features, assistive listening devices, and American Sign Language interpreters.

At state parks, accessibility features may not be consistent, but you can usually find some information on each park’s website.

Apps like AllTrails list wheelchair-friendly trails across the country, but the information may not be verified, so contact the park or land manager for verification. Among the parks with notable accessible trails are Redwood National and State Parks, North Cascades National Park, Badlands National Park, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park .

Syren Nagakyrie, the founder of the nonprofit Disabled Hikers and the author of “The Disabled Hiker’s Guide to Western Washington and Oregon” and “The Disabled Hiker’s Guide to Northern California,” among other guidebooks, leads group hikes and conducts assessments throughout the United States.

However, anyone whose ever traveled knows things can go wrong, so KPRC 2 consulted Doug Shupe with AAA Texas to get some tips before you start booking flights or requesting time off work.

Analysts are predicting they’re projecting that 4.9 billion people will travel globally this year. That’s going to be a record higher than the 4.5 billion who traveled around the world back in 2019 before the pandemic began.

When the plane lands and the seat belt sign turns off, I usually rise out of my aisle seat as quickly as possible, get my bag out of the overhead bin, and gather my stuff to put into my backpack, and then put it on — ready to go. Then I gesture to the folks in my row that they are welcome to do the same. If they don’t, I try to get back into my seat area and leave the aisle clear.

Lately I’m reading advice columns that tell me I should not stand up until the rows in front of me have disembarked, and I should certainly not touch the overhead bin until my turn has arrived. What is the courteous practice here? — Anonymous

If you’re taking the time to write to us for an answer to this question, you’re not the problem. I don’t think you’re acting like a jerk during the disembarkation process, and judging by the description, I’d wager your fellow travelers know you mean well, too.

To check my take, I went to three etiquette experts for their deplaning advice.

Nick Leighton, a two-time Emmy award-winning talk show host, and co-host of the podcast “ Were You Raised By Wolves ?” started with the general principle that etiquette is all about the acknowledgment that other people exist.

To be a polite traveler , “we want to minimize inconvenience to people unnecessarily,” he said. “We want to be mindful of other passengers.” You appear to be doing this, so good on you.

Leighton pointed out that airplanes can be a battleground for etiquette issues because they confine lots of people together from many different backgrounds.

“All etiquette is local etiquette,” he said. “Paris, France, and Paris, Texas, have different etiquette ... everybody’s working on slightly different etiquette playbooks.”

That means there will be people on a plane with different opinions on when to de-board.

In the United States, we have a generally agreed upon rule that passengers should wait for the rows in front of them to exit before stepping into the aisle, with the exception of allowing passengers through who have tight connections.

“It should be row by row — there’s no question about that,” said Jules Hirst, an etiquette expert and co-author of the book “Power of Civility.”

The gray area kicks in with when to stand up, she said, although you should never stand before the seat belt light goes off. A passenger standing could stop the taxiing process.

In a perfect world, we would all stay seated like church mice until we can time perfectly when to pop up, grab our stuff and leave right behind the row in front of us — not wasting an extra second. But the reality is that sitting in economy takes a physical toll, and many of us want to stand after hours of cramped misery.

Hirst says it’s acceptable for you to stand and give yourself some relief, just be mindful of any travelers who may need to pass you.

Lisa Mirza Grotts, a certified etiquette professional, agreed. As long as you’re not trying to jump the line, “there’s no harm in standing in your row while you wait,” she said in an email.

Every expert agreed that what’s much worse than standing is stalling. Your row mates will appreciate any proactive preparedness.

“If [the aisle passengers] want to jump up, they don’t want to jump up — that’s fine,” Leighton said. “Where I don’t want them is their stuff is everywhere, their phone is still plugged into the charger in the seat ... I want to know that when it’s our time, they’re ready to go.”

Particularly if you’re in the aisle seat , you should have your belongings together and ready to leave before it’s your turn to exit. If you’re looking for a signal, look for people four or five rows ahead of you to finish before you fish your bag from the overhead bin.

Mirza Grotts adds that being ready for your turn “will only have a positive ripple effect on the plane, and who doesn’t want to ride that wave?”
