Along the Mayan Riviera tourist corridor, you'll find everything from beaches, reefs, and rivers to communities, forests, and lakes — with plenty of adventure, food, and history mixed in. The Mayans believed that the gods protected this place, and given the beauty to be found here, it's hard to argue with that assessment.

This Coastal Destination Is Home to Some of the Most Iconic Mexico Attractions — Here's How to Plan the Perfect Trip

It's the very definition of paradise.

Just south of Cancún sits Mexico's Riviera Maya, a region full of tempting travel offerings. Here, visitors will find one of the world's largest barrier reefs lurking just off the coast, Mayan ruins touching powder-soft sand in Tulum, a buzzing nightlife scene in Playa del Carmen, and sea turtles floating majestically in the waters of Akumal. Throw in miles and miles of pristine beaches and it's easy to see why this Mexican Caribbean coastal gem draws hordes of admirers. Ready to be one of them? Pack your swimwear and bookmark our curated guide to this deservedly hyped region in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The Best Times to Visit the Riviera Maya

Sun-seekers will appreciate the Riviera Maya's year-round rays. However, if you're particular about your weather, there are a few things to keep in mind.

January through March visitors can expect a more temperate climate , with temperatures ranging from about 73 F to 77 F. Rainy days are rather rare during this time, with January averaging five days of rain and February and March averaging just three.

April and May bring in hotter days, with the average temperature hitting 79 to 81 F. The rain is minimal, however, there may be one unwanted guest in the spring months: the foul-smelling brown sargassum seaweed that infests beaches seasonally.

June, July, and August can feel sweltering, with average temperatures peaking at 82 F. And, though the threat is relatively low, June to October is officially hurricane season in Rivera Maya.

November and December usher in the more pleasant temperatures again, pulling back to 77 F to 75 F respectively. So really, the best time to visit is whenever feels best to you.

Things to Do in the Riviera Maya

If you're wondering where to go in the Riviera Maya for a bit of shopping and nightlife, look to the largest city in the region: Playa del Carmen.

The downtown area is remarkably pedestrian-friendly, with boutiques, restaurants, bars, and tequila museums dotted along Quinta Avenida, a.k.a. its " Fifth Avenue ." In Playa, scorching days at the various beach clubs — Martina, Lido, and Zenzi — turn into balmy nights at thumping nightlife establishments, many of which are concentrated around Twelfth Street.

Travelers can also plot out a number of day trips around the Riviera Maya right from vendors in Playa del Carmen, including excursions trips to Cozumel , a bonafide snorkeling and diving mecca.

The island is located on the Mesoamerican Reef — the largest barrier reef system in the Atlantic Ocean — which dazzles all the way from Mexico's coast to Belize, Guatemala, and the Bay Islands of Honduras. To get to Cozumel, two companies ( Ultramar and Winjet ) operate fast ferries from the dock close to Parque Los Fundadores.

The Mayan ruins at Cobá and Chichén Itzá also make fantastic day expeditions, with the former housing a 120-step pyramid called Nohoch Mul, which offers awe-inspiring jungle views from the summit. The latter, Chichén Itzá, is further inland and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its most famous monument (El Castillo) has 365 steps for each day in the solar year (climbing them is not permitted). Chichén Itzá is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World .

Beautiful Bacalar warrants a longer trip to explore the Lagoon of Seven Colors (Laguna de Los Siete Colores), named for the varying shades of blue of its crystalline waters. On a clear, sunny day, you'll do no better than kayaking, swimming, or taking a boat around the lagoon. The rest of this laid-back "Magic Town" (Pueblo Mágico) is a pleasure to discover on foot.

Enlightenment-seekers may want to spend a little extra time in Tulum . It's a destination filled with loveable contradictions. It's spiritual yet hedonistic, boho yet affluent. It's a place where Yoga studios , healing pre-Hispanic temazcal sweat lodges, and electronic music-fueled nights coexist.

Tulum is also brimming with Instagram-friendly eye candy, including the Ahau Tulum's Ven a Luz sculpture, the "Follow that dream" sign at the Lolita Lolita Tulum boutique, and the whitewashed swings at Coco Beach Club . Of course, all its beaches are equally picture-perfect, though the unmissable beach experience in Tulum is the archaeological site at Playa Ruinas. The clifftop Mayan ruin overlooking the impossibly blue waters of the Caribbean makes this a unique sandy spot.

For sand-free swimming, make your way to the plethora of cenotes between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Ancient Mayans believed these natural pools to be gateways to the underworld, and there are thousands spread around the Mexican Caribbean in all shapes and sizes: Some are bat-filled and enclosed, others are open-air and permit diving or cliff jumping. Jardin del Eden, Cenote Azul, and Dos Ojos are extremely popular. Don't leave Riviera Maya without dipping in one of these limestone sinkholes.

Those looking for animal encounters with their swim should head to Akumal, a beach town located between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Akumal is Maya for "place of the turtles," which means there will be plenty of flippered friends waiting for you. Come face-to-face with them on a self-guided tour by swimming out from the dreamy white sand beach at Lol-Ha restaurant.

If you feel a call to adventure, high-octane hijinks are offered at any of Xcaret Group's all-inclusive eco-parks sprinkled across the Riviera Maya. Slither down a 131-foot lighthouse slide at Xel-Há , take to the water on a floating trajinera for a culture-filled Mexican party at Xoximilco , or zipline with the wind in your hair through the jungle at XPlor .

One more must-see spot is Sian Ka'an Biosphere , the largest protected natural area in the Mexican Caribbean. Come to paddleboard, kayak, swim, and hike through 2,000 square miles of lagoons, pristine rainforests, beaches, cenotes, and fauna-filled wetlands.

Where to Stay in the Riviera Maya

Travelers to the Riviera Maya are spoiled with choice when it comes to accommodations. Just north of Playa del Carmen, visitors can indulge in the finest with a stay at Rosewood Mayakoba , where boats usher guests to their suites via winding canals. The resort's recently unveiled bi-level wellness suites are worth booking if only for the moon-aligned aromatherapy program alone that's part of the turndown service. Hotel Xcaret Arte is made for those looking to unplug and never, ever, leave the resort. This adults-only, all-inclusive property in Playa del Carmen offers guests the chance to participate in activities like art workshops and allows for unlimited access to each exhilarating Xcaret Group park.

For sleek rooftop pool lounging, downtown hotels Thompson Playa del Carmen and The Fives don't disappoint, but if it's a center-of-the-action beachfront experience you're after, check into Hilton Playa del Carmen .

In Tulum, Papaya Playa Project is achingly cool with thatched villas, a beach club packed with digital nomads by day and stylish clubbers at night, and a robust calendar of wellness events.

Nômade Tulum also favors the health-conscious with cacao ceremonies, spiritual talks, yoga classes complete with a live DJ soundtrack, and opportunities for nourishment by warm Caribbean winds at the hotel's treehouse lodgings.

For an art-filled getaway, book a few nights in Tulum's Casa Malca , the former summer home of Pablo Escobar that has been lovingly transformed into a boutique hotel that also boats original pieces by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Holton Rower, and a bronze sculpture by KAWS.

How to Get to the Riviera Maya

Flights to the Riviera Maya from the U.S. are plentiful with all major U.S. airlines offering direct flights from Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Houston, Chicago, and more. Cancún International Airport (CUN), Mexico's second-largest airport, will be your gateway to adventures in the region with daily direct flights. The island of Cozumel also has a small airport (CZM), which serves both international and domestic airlines.

From the airport, travelers can hire a car with Hertz, Avis, or Europcar (and a host of others), take a taxi, or hop on the low cost and ever-reliable ADO Bus shuttle that runs directly to both Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The Riviera Maya, which is also sometimes referred to as the Mayan Riviera, stretches over nearly 100 miles of coastline with beautiful white sand beaches and brilliant turquoise colored water just south of Cancun . This world-renowned paradise is home to mangroves and lagoons, ancient Mayan cities, ecological reserves and adventure parks, and the world's second largest coral reef.

The unique topography of the Riviera Maya makes it an ideal destination for adventure seekers . You can dive in cenotes , swim or raft in underground rivers, ride ATVs through the jungle and fly on ziplines. If you're planning a trip, here's what to know.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit the Riviera Maya is in November through February, when temperatures are warm but not too hot, and the chance of rainfall is low. March through May can be oppressively hot, and May through November will bring heavy rainfall.
  • Language: Spanish, but many natives you meet here will speak English fluently due to how dominant the tourism industry is in this area.
  • Currency: Peso
  • Getting Around: Public transportation in the Riviera Maya is low-cost and reliable. From the Cancun airport, you can easily find the local ADO bus line in front of Terminal 3. This bus will take you to downtown Cancun in 25 minutes for 68 pesos. A bus to Playa del Carmen will take about 45 minutes, while a bus to Tulum will take approximately two hours. For those traveling light, a combi, or "colectivo," is a great option. These air-conditioned vans stop right outside the bus stations and are often cheaper than bus options. Taxis in the Riviera Maya are also plentiful and affordable, but take note that most do not offer air conditioning.
  • Travel Tip: One of the most unique geological characteristics of the Yucatan Peninsula is its cenotes—or sinkholes. These photogenic spots are filled with fresh water and are the perfect place to go swimming. The most popular cenote in the Riviera Maya is Cenote Dos Ojos , but there are plenty of options throughout the region.

Where to Stay

  • Playa del Carmen : A former sleepy fishing village, this destination has grown into a cosmopolitan town, the largest in the Riviera Maya, but still small enough to get around on foot. If you're interested in shopping, nightlife and fine dining, this is the place, but the beach is also alluring. Playacar is a nearby resort area offering upscale accommodations and some all-inclusive options. A great resort option here is the rustic and glamorous Viceroy Riviera Maya which offers private and intimate access to both the beach and jungle.
  • Cozumel : The largest island in the Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel is a short ferry-ride from Playa del Carmen. It's a great spot for scuba diving and snorkeling, the clear water offering visibility of up to 200 feet. The center of the island is mostly undeveloped jungle and lagoons with many endemic species of small animals and birds. Chankanaab National Park has a botanical garden featuring tropical plants, and Chankanaab Lagoon, a natural aquarium with more than 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans and corals. One great resort option here is The Explorean Cozumel , a laid back all-inclusive that overlooks the Caribbean Sea.
  • Tulum : Once a busy Mayan ceremonial center and trading port, the ruins here are set in a spectacular setting, on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea . The town of Tulum has budget options for accommodation as well as some nice cabanas to rent along the beach . One interesting option is the Nueva Vida de Ramiro eco-resort. A great option for accommodation here is La Valise , a serene seafront property with an infinity pool and two on-site eateries.

Culture and Customs

The Riviera Maya was an important commercial and religious center for the ancient Maya civilization, and there are many archaeological sites to discover in the area, such as Tulum , Cobá and Muyil, where you can learn more about their history. For hundreds of years, the area remained isolated from the rest of the country due to its lack of adequate roads. As Cancun was developed, some tourists wanted an alternative to the mega-resort area, and the Riviera Maya was discovered.

Although there are large hotels and tourist amenities throughout the area, there are many eco-tourism options that allow visitors to experience the natural resources and amazing biodiversity of this beautiful region of Mexico.

Getting There

The easiest way to get to the Riviera Maya is usually via a flight to Cancun International Airport . From there, there are a number of public transportation and driving options that can take you to Playa del Carmen or Tulum within two hours or less.

Things to Do

  • Xcaret Eco Theme Park  offers an abundance of activities for all ages. A full day can be spent in Xcaret swimming in underground rivers, snorkeling, seeing a re-enactment of the pre-Hispanic ball game, visiting ancient Mayan ruins and topping off the day by watching the spectacular cultural show that is presented every evening.
  • In   Xel-Ha Park , subterranean currents of fresh water combine with salt water producing a unique ecosystem with multitudes of tropical fish perfect for snorkeling. Other activities at this water theme park include floating along the river on inner tubes, swinging over cenotes and swimming with dolphins. If you get tired of being in the water you can go on an ecological walking tour through the surrounding jungle, or take a break on "Hammock Island."
  • Aktun Chen  covers almost 1000 acres of rainforest and is home to 3 caves with underground rivers. An easy walking tour of the main cave lasts about an hour and allows visitors to witness spectacular geological formations. Walking through the park's jungle paths offers the chance to glimpse some of the area's wildlife.
  • The Xaman Ha Aviary  is an open-air sanctuary in Playacar providing a natural habitat to over 60 species of tropical birds. Meander the sanctuary's paths and trails and see if you can spot toucans, macaws, flamingos, egrets, herons and other beautiful birds of the area.
  • The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve   is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico and has 2500 square miles of unspoiled natural beauty with un-excavated Mayan ruins, fresh water canals, mangroves, lagoons and inlets. Visitors can learn about its diverse wildlife and participate in conservation projects. Ecological tours of the reserve are offered, as well as kayak tours and fly fishing.

Money Saving Tips

  • The ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum, essential for any trip to the Riviera Maya, are free on Sundays.
  • Pay with cash and in Mexican pesos to avoid paying an exchange rate.
  • Eat at local spots. There are plenty of street food carts where you can find incredible eats for less.

More About Riviera Maya

Above all else, beaches are what define the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula—soft, blinding white strands of sand embracing clear turquoise waters; shores that curve into calm lagoons, coves, and inlets; and waves that crash against cliffs. The towns in this wild landscape are varied and eccentric. Puerto Morelos has the relaxed atmosphere of a Mexican fishing village. Playa del Carmen is filled with resorts—some of them All-Inclusive—that are as glitzy as those in Cancún and Cozumel. The beaches here, from Punta Tanchacté to Tulum, are beloved by scuba divers, snorkelers, bird-watchers, and beachcombers. Against this backdrop is Mayan culture. Although the modern Maya live in the cities and villages along the coast, their history can be seen at the ruins such as Tulum, where dramatic pyramids sit on a bluff overlooking the Caribbean, welcoming the sunrise each morning.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

What’s The Best Time of Year to Visit the Riviera Maya?

Beach at the Desire Riviera Maya Pearl Resort

Winter in the Riviera Maya: Clear Skies, Warm Temperatures, and Crowds

From December to February, the sun-drenched shores of the Riviera Maya attract thousands of North Americans looking to escape the winter doldrums. The weather is perfectly beachy — expect temperatures in the mid 80s and plenty of sunshine — but tourist crowds abound and hotel prices skyrocket around the holidays. Surges in crowds and prices also happen during President’s Day week and Valentine’s Day, as well as during spring break. For the best deals during the winter season, aim to visit between mid-January and mid-February, when the crowds thin a bit. You can also head to the Riviera Maya during the first two weeks of December to enjoy the same weather without the crush of people.

Spring in the Riviera Maya: Slightly Hotter, but Generally Less Crowded

The weather from March to April is equally as pleasant as during the winter months, though temperatures will be higher during the day. Keep in mind that the spring break season runs into April, so the Riviera Maya bursts with activity at times during these months. College age revelers tend to flock to Cancun , and families and couples head to resorts farther south, in Playa del Carmen and Tulum . Additionally, Semana Santa — the week before Easter — is prime travel time for domestic tourists.

Summer in the Riviera Maya: Hot and Humid, with the Threat of Rain

June through august brings scorching heat, high humidity, and low-season deals to the riviera maya. if you can stand the 95-degree temperatures, you can enjoy most of the region’s attractions crowd-free. though don’t say we didn’t warn you — the sweltering temps can make most outdoor pursuits short of poolside lounging unbearable. you can also expect afternoon thunderstorms in the later part of the season (and, of course, hurricanes are a threat starting in june)., fall in the riviera maya: the wettest season and a higher chance of hurricanes.

Though hurricane season technically begins in June, most storms don’t roll through the Riviera Maya until the autumn months. September and October are typically the region’s rainiest months, with storms tapering off by mid-November. Though temperatures tend to be a bit cooler than in the summer, travelers can expect high humidity that will make it feel hotter than it might be.

What to Do in the Riviera Maya for Families: Snorkeling, Water Parks, and More

Despite Playa del Carmen’s DJ-fueled atmosphere, the Riviera Maya is one of Mexico’s most family-friendly destinations. Tons of resorts in the region cater to families, and include tricked-out kids’ clubs, nightly entertainment, and action-packed activity schedules. But if you’re looking to leave your resort’s grounds with the kiddos, don’t miss eco-adventure theme parks like Xel-Ha, Xplor, or Xcaret. These offer aquatic adventures like cenote snorkeling and river tubing or land-based thrills like zip-lining.

What to Do in the Riviera Maya for Couples: Spas, Jungle Excursions, and Romantic Dinners

The tourist-clogged paths of Tulum’s Mayan ruins may not be as romantic as they once were, which is why we suggest kayaking through Sian Ka’an for an otherworldly escape. It doesn’t get much dreamier than a gentle paddle through this UNESCO-protected jungle biosphere — especially if you go around sunset. Plus, many local tour companies invest their proceeds back into the biosphere’s conservation efforts — something we can all fall in love with. The Riviera Maya is also flush with amazing spas — you’ll find that Mayakoba’s luxury hotels, to the north of Playa del Carmen, offer some of the region’s best. Don’t miss out on the high-end foodie scene in Tulum either, where restaurants like Hartwood and Arca are slinging some of Mexico’s best haute cuisine.

What to Do in the Riviera Maya for Adventurers: Ancient Ruins and Underwater Pursuits

The Riviera Maya’s underwater world is ripe for exploration. Just offshore, travelers can access the Mesoamerican Reef, an incredibly biodiverse reef system. This tropical barrier reef stretches 620 miles from the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras, making it the second largest reef system in the world, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Divers (and snorkelers) can see more than 1,000 different marine species. On top of the water, wind- and kite-surfing are popular in some of the towns of the Riviera Maya. If you’re more comfortable on dry land, head into the Yucatan, where the ruins of Coba and Chichen Itza are calling. Be sure to stop for a dip in the region’s cenotes along the way to cool off.

What to Do in the Riviera Maya for Solo Travelers: Yoga and Exploring

Solo travelers looking for a holistic spin on their vacation can head to Tulum , where health and wellness pursuits sit side-by-side with white sand beaches and mystical cenotes. While Tulum isn’t the off-the-beaten track destination it once was, there’s still a bohemian vibe about the place that encourages travelers to disconnect, and reflect — albeit, with a margarita in hand. Plenty of hotels in Tulum host official yoga retreats — like the Amansala Eco-Chic Resort Retreat — and hotels like The Beach Tulum offer free morning yoga classes. If you’re traveling alone, we also recommend checking out the ruins of the region — including Coba, Chichen Itza, and Tulum.

What to Do in the Riviera Maya for Partiers: Nightclubs and Bars in Playa del Carmen

If you’re looking to party in the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen is the perfect destinations. This city has the liveliest scene in the Riviera Maya, and you’ll find plenty of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs right in the center of town. Many of these are found along busy Fifth Avenue, though in Playa del Carmen, it’s all about the beach clubs. Favorites include Mamita’s, Indigo, and KOOL. There’s a small gay scene in Playa del Carmen as well. Tulum is a bit more relaxed, but still has its own party circuit. Every night of the week sees a different throw-down, with the legendary Saturday night parties at Playa Papaya Project and the Thursday night Casa Jaguar Jungle Party. Some beach clubs, like Taboo, have also sprung up as of late 2019, bringing the daytime party right to the beach.

Essential Things to Know Before Your First Riviera Maya Vacation

Beach at the Hotel Riu Palace Riviera Maya

Spanish is the Primary Language in the Riviera Maya, but English is Widely Spoken

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that you’re in Mexico when visiting the Riviera Maya . Although Spanish is the official language of Mexico, English is widely spoken at hotels, restaurants, bars, and other tourist-oriented spots along the coast. Of course, if you’re looking to practice your Spanish, the region’s locals usually appreciate the effort.

Driving Distances Can Be Far in the Riviera Maya

When visiting the Riviera Maya, you’ll likely want to choose one city or town to visit and stick to it. You see, the Riviera Maya starts just south of Cancun and stretches all the way to Tulum, spanning a distance of around 85 miles. So if you’re staying near Cancun you won’t be driving to bars in Playa del Carmen or going out for dinner in Tulum. Since resorts are large and provide all sorts of dining and entertainment, most Riviera Maya visitors don’t rent a car, and instead opt to take taxis when visiting nearby sites off property. However, if you’re looking to make your vacation into a road trip (and you should consider this, as there are tons of non-hotel and non-beach things to see and do here), car rentals are cheap. Additionally, the main highway through the region is safe and — for the most part — well maintained.

Seaweed Is an Issue in the Riviera Maya

The beaches along the Riviera Maya are some of Mexico’s most beautiful, however they are plagued by the effects of global warming in a very specific way. Rising ocean temperatures have caused a spike in the production of sargassum, a species of seaweed found in shallow waters near coral reefs. The seaweed is a naturally occurring issue, but it is unsightly (and smelly) when it washes up in mounds along the shore. Many hotels and resorts do their best to clean up the piles and remove them from the beach, but there isn’t much that can be done to eliminate the seagrass completely. Seaweed in the Riviera Maya tends to be worst during the summer months, though there’s not always a logic to it, and there have been years when it has appeared all year long.

The Water in the Riviera Maya is Not Drinkable

Like the rest of Mexico, the tap water along the Riviera Maya is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled water for drinking and teeth brushing, and avoid any raw fruits or vegetables that may have been washed with tap water. Most restaurants that cater to tourists serve filtered water and ice. If you’re unsure, just ask, and if you’re still wary, stick to the bottled stuff — it’s inexpensive and available for purchase at hotels, restaurants, and convenience stores.

The Best Riviera Maya Food is Outside of the Resorts

Because of said water issue, many travelers are hesitant to visit local restaurants in the Riviera Maya, though we’d argue that the food at local restaurants is often fresher and of better quality than that found at many all-inclusive resorts. Plus, if you’re looking to sample the region’s incredible cuisine, you’ll need to head off property. Many hotel concierges and staff members are happy to suggest their neighborhood favorites. While you’re in the Riviera Maya, look for regional favorites like cochinita pibil — slow-cooked pork marinated with sour orange and achiote paste — and sopa de lima — the inspiration behind what many North Americans know as tortilla soup.

The Riviera Maya is One of the Safest Regions in Mexico for Tourists

Violence in Mexico is a spiraling issue that only seems to be getting worse (a bit more on that at Is it safe to travel to Mexico ? ). However, the major tourist towns of the Riviera Maya are generally safe for travelers. The region has the same Level 2 advisory from the U.S. State Department as France, Germany, and the U.K. Driving along the main highway in the region and around the tourist zones of most major towns and cities in the area should be problem-free, as should road trips inland to Chichen Itza and Coba. If you’re nervous, opt for group tours or private ground transport rather than driving yourself.

Say No to Drugs

Drugs have become a growing issue in the riviera maya, leading to shootings and other violent acts (sometimes even in tourist-oriented destinations like cancun, though generally far from the hotel zone where most tourists stay). tourist demand is part of the problem. be smart and don’t try to score drugs while you’re in town. it’s illegal, dangerous, and promotes violence., what to wear in the riviera maya, cancun essentials, shop the look.

Hotel Picks in Cancun

Ok, ok — Cancun isn’t technically part of the Riviera Maya. But the truth is that many people think that it is. If you’re set on spending your “Riviera Maya” vacation in Cancun, you might not realize that Cancun is actually a bustling, congested city home to more than one million people. The touristy beach enclave where spring breakers flock for round-the-clock parties is actually known as the Hotel Zone , a miles-long peninsula that’s off Cancun’s coast. While Cancun certainly touts its reputation as a party destination, there are hundreds of hotel options, ranging from family-friendly all-inclusives to romantic resorts. It also has one of the prettiest beaches in the region.

A sleepy sidekick tucked between Cancun and Playa del Carmen , Puerto Morelos is a great pick for families and couples seeking an all-inclusive experience without having to devote much time driving to their destination from the airport. The town itself has some restaurants and bars that are worth hitting up, but by and large the pace is slow, low key, and prime for a week of relaxing.

Best Puerto Morelos Hotel for Families: Grand Residences Riviera Cancun

Hotel Picks in Playa del Carmen

About an hour south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen offers a smaller, more manageable party scene. It attracts a slightly older crowd than Cancun, but it’s by no means calm. Beach clubs are popular with twenty- and thirty-somethings looking to have a good time, while families enjoy Playa’s touristy downtown centered around Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) and Constituyentes. Filled with restaurants, trendy bars, and 24-hour entertainment, downtown Playa can sometimes feel like a miniature Cancun.

Best Playa del Carmen Hotel for Families: Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Aerial Photography at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Pricing for Grand Velas Riviera Maya

If you’re looking for a truly luxe all-inclusive vacation with the whole family, Grand Velas Riviera Maya is the kid-friendly alternative to Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun up the coast. Dining options are great, the setting is stunning, services are luxurious, and your kids will never be bored.

Best Playa del Carmen Hotel for Couples: Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun

Best Playa del Carmen Hotel for Partiers: Thompson Playa del Carmen

The Main Pool at the Thompson Playa Del Carmen

Thompson hotels always have a bit of a scene, but one with high-end polish. We love this chic, modern property with its lively dining options. You’re not right on the beach, but it’s hard to beat the beautiful design and upbeat atmosphere.

Hotel Picks in Mayakoba

An exclusive resort enclave about 20-minutes north of Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba is home to the Riviera Maya’s premier luxury resorts. The massive complex holds four luxury properties, hotel-managed residences, a golf course, and more than 25 restaurants. For luxury seekers, Mayakoba is the place to see and be seen.

Best Mayakoba Hotel for Families: Rosewood Mayakoba

Aerial View of the Rosewood Mayakoba

What can we say? When it comes to luxurious romantic escapes, the Banyan Tree brand is top-notch. Their Mayakoba outpost is no exception. The lush jungle setting, beautiful beach, stunning spa, and pampering service all make this a great pick.

Best Mayakoba Hotel for Partiers: Andaz Mayakoba

The Beachside Pool at the Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya

Pricing for Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya

While partying isn’t high on the list for travelers hitting up the Mayakoba properties, the Andaz Mayakoba has a more youthful, buzzy vibe to it. Even so, that upbeat scene comes wrapped in a completely refined package.

Hotel Picks in Tulum

Ahhh, Tulum . Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no doubt that it’s one of Mexico’s top destinations. What started as an undiscovered, barefoot, bohemian secret has turned into Cancun for Instagrammers, with a hint of health and wellness thrown in. Tulum Pueblo is the official town center — and it’s where you’ll find more authentic eats and a cool local vibe — but many travelers simply stick to the coastline. There, beachfront bungalow-style hotels offer boutique getaways that often define a week in paradise.

Best Tulum Hotel for Families: La Zebra Hotel Tulum

Beach at La Zebra Colibri Boutique Hotel

Pricing for La Zebra Hotel Tulum

You won’t find too many hotels that allow kids in Tulum , which makes La Zebra something of an exception. This property is one of the most popular in town and has a playground to keep kids entertained. You’ll also find highly recommended dining on-site.

Best Cancun Hotel for Couples: The Beach Tulum

Restaurant at The Beach Tulum

Pricing for The Beach Tulum

If you’re after romance and a dash of the high life, you’d do well to post up at The Beach Tulum . Here, all rooms are beachfront and all come with either a rooftop hot tub or a beachside plunge pool. You’ll also score your own dedicated double beach loungers, upping the romance factor.

Hotel Picks in Cozumel

A 12-mile boat ride from the Riviera Maya mainland, Cozumel is perhaps best known as a major cruise port. The island draws at least one million cruisers every year, which means crowds — and lots of them. Cruise ship clientele tend to flood the island’s west coast, between the cruise piers and downtown San Miguel — the island’s main hub. Travelers also come to Cozumel for the diving. The Palancar Reef, located a mile offshore, is known as one of the best dive spots in Mexico.

Unmissable Things to do on the Mayan Riviera

Welcome to the Riviera Maya! Over the years, we’ve spent a lot of time in this corner of Mexico, from months spent in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, to week-long winter visits spent exploring Akumal, Tulum, and Cozumel.

This stretch of Mexico is a playground for the sun-seeking and adventure-loving traveler. It’s where you can kick off your flip-flops and dive right into a sea of activities. From the chill vibes of Puerto Morelos to the ancient whispers of Tulum’s ruins, there’s a slice of paradise here for everyone.

Things to Do on the Riviera Maya in Mexico

Ready to explore coral reefs, dine on top-notch tacos, or zip-line through lush jungles? Let’s get started and unwrap the best things to do on the Mayan Riviera and explore everything this coastal wonderland has to offer.

What is considered the Riviera Maya?

The Riviera Maya extends along Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, covering a 75-mile coastline from Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen. This region includes popular destinations like Playa del Carmen, known for its beaches and shopping; Puerto Aventuras, with its marina; Akumal, famous for snorkeling with sea turtles; and Tulum, renowned for its Mayan ruins and white sand beaches. It’s where you can take your Mexican passport on a joyride of experiences, from culinary to culture to art or enjoying yourself in nature.

Puerto Morelos: Relaxed Coastal Charm

Kick off your Riviera Maya adventure in Puerto Morelos, a stone’s throw from Cancun and the gateway to this coastal paradise. It’s a chill spot with a big heart, boasting an inviting beach and a sea brimming with life. Don your snorkel gear and meet the local marine residents around the vibrant coral reefs. For a splash of adventure, the cenotes nearby are perfect for a cliff-jump thrill.

Playa del Carmen: Urban Beach Bliss

Next up, Playa del Carmen offers up its bustling streets and powdery sands. It’s your ticket to exquisite eats and a hub for excursions to ancient Mayan sites and crystal-clear cenotes.

There’s a lot to do in Playa del Carmen, but be sure to indulge in some retail therapy on the bustling 5th Avenue (Quinta Aveneda) in Playa del Carmen, a vibrant street lined with shops, restaurants, and bars all a stones throw from the beach.

If shopping isn’t your thing, master the waves with a SUP rental where the chill vibe of surfing meets the balance challenge of standing up. Playa del Carmen’s waters are perfect for beginners and pros alike to paddle out and enjoy the view from a different perspective.

There are enough fun things to do in Playa del Carmen to keep you busy for weeks, but if you’re looking for a little art and culture, check out the vibrant Frida Kahlo Museum in Playa del Carmen. It’s a wonderful break from the beach to celebrate the life and work of the iconic Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.

Chichen Itza: Echoes of the Ancient Maya

If you want to explore the mysteries of the Mayan people, don’t miss Chichen Itza, a testament to the Maya’s architectural genius, enveloped by the jungle yet standing proud and colorful, still echoing with ancient tales. It’s a few hours inland from the Mayan Riviera proper but makes for a great day trip.

Akumal: Turtle Haven

In Akumal, tranquility reigns supreme on some of the Riviera Maya’s finest sands. It’s a snorkeler’s haven where majestic turtles glide through the waters with grace.

Fun read: The DIY Guide to Snorkeling with Endangered Sea Turtles in Akumal Mexico

While you’re there, kick back at La Buena Vida. This is a beachfront bar in Akumal where you can relax with a drink in hand and enjoy stunning sea views.

Tulum: Coastal Ruins and Culture

Then there’s Tulum, where history perches on cliffs overlooking the sea, offering a glimpse into the Maya’s coastal life.

While you’re there, rent a bike and explore Tulum’s bustling streets, beautiful beaches, and nearby cenotes at your own pace.

Exploring Cenotes: Nature’s Subterranean Wonders

Discover the Riviera Maya’s hidden gems: cenotes. These natural limestone pools are gateways to an underwater world of crystal-clear waters and stunning rock formations.

Dive into Cenote Cristalino , a favorite for its sparkling, refreshing waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Not far away, Cenote Dos Ojos beckons the more adventurous souls with its vast network of caves, perfect for diving deep into the Yucatan’s subterranean mysteries. Whether you’re looking for a serene swim or an underwater adventure, the cenotes are a must-visit and they literally dot the Riviera Maya for miles and miles.

Cozumel: Island Adventures

Finally, we have Cozumel. An island gem wrapped in hues of blue. A paradise for underwater explorers and fishing enthusiasts alike, it offers some of the most stunning aquatic experiences around. Regarded as home to some of the best snorkeling in Mexico, Cozumel makes a great day trip from Playe Del Carmen or a fine place to bed down for a week or two. Being a cruise ship destination, it’s also a thriving area to explore.

Dive into the local flavor with Riviera Maya’s must-try dish: fish tacos. Fresh, zesty, and packed with flavor, they’re the essence of coastal cuisine on a plate. While you can find foods from all around the world in the Riviera Maya, eating local is the best way to experience it. From street vendors to hidden treasures you can find some of the best Mexican food here and while we won’t share our favorites, know that some of them will leave you wanting to eat there every night.

Coba Ruins: Echoes from the Past

Reach for the sky as you climb the ancient pyramids at Coba Ruins. Step back in time as you traverse the same stone causeways that the Maya did in this venerable city. The view from the top is as breathtaking as the history is deep, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding jungle.

Rio Secreto: The Underground River’s Mystique

Journey into the earth at Rio Secreto, where an underground river flows through a network of caves lined with dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. This hidden gem offers a surreal adventure, softly lit by the natural light filtering through, creating a serene atmosphere for exploration and reflection.

The Ultimate 10-Day Riviera Maya Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

January 18, 2018

Nohuch Mul Coba Ruins, Mexico

When planning our trip, I quickly learned that it is completely impossible to see and do all the awesome things this area has to offer. There are simply too many picturesque beaches, too many unique cenotes, too many gorgeous snorkeling spots, too many adventure parks, too many ancient Mayan ruins, and too many towns worth a visit. There is absolutely an overabundance of things to do in the Riviera Maya!

I suppose this is a good problem to have. But it’s tricky to selectively choose the places that most interest you, and then put together a vacation itinerary around it, also considering how to get from A to B, the timing of it all, and your budget. It’s a bit like putting together a puzzle with extra pieces mixed in that you don’t need — you have to sort through them all to decide which pieces work together and which don’t.

Prior to our 10-day Riviera Maya trip, I did a ton of research and planning to craft our ideal itinerary, and everything came together really well! I’m sharing our itinerary here, with the hope that it helps you plan your travels to the Riviera Maya , especially if it’s your first time visiting. I’ll also provide some helpful tips we learned along the way.

This Riviera Maya itinerary is for those who want to explore the region independently, see many of the beautiful beaches, visit the most popular Mayan ruins, and experience a sampling of the region’s tourist towns. It’s definitely an active trip, and while there is time for chilling at the beach, this trip as a whole is not a super-relaxing vacation (you will be staying on the move!). You will, however, get a taste for a variety of places, and will be able to hone in on some favorites you might like to return to in the future.

Transportation We didn’t rent a car during our trip to Mexico, so we relied on a combination of private and public transportation. The first-class ADO bus tickets are quite cheap, and the buses are a very safe, comfortable way to get around. We used taxis or private transportation when necessary, or when we felt the cost was worth the convenience it provided. I’m including a bunch of transportation tips throughout the itinerary below. However, there’s no doubt that this itinerary would certainly be easier if you plan to rent a car.

Accommodations We stayed at small hotels in Isla Mujeres, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum. When traveling, we usually look for the cheapest hotels that still meet our general comfort level (safe, clean, decently comfortable, conveniently located, and well-reviewed online). We generally prefer to spend money on the experiences during a trip rather than on the accommodations. (However, we did splurge a bit on our accommodations in Isla Mujeres, and we are glad we did! Read more in the Isla Mujeres section below.) For this trip in particular, we knew much of our time would be spent away from the hotels exploring all that the region has to offer, including eating out at local restaurants. An all-inclusive resort just wouldn’t make much sense with this type of itinerary.

Ok, that’s enough introduction! Let’s get right down to it. Here’s my 10-day Riviera Maya itinerary, below.

Day 1: Arrival & Isla Mujeres

Try to book a flight that arrives at Cancun in the morning or early afternoon to maximize your time. Our itinerary starts out at the nearby Isla Mujeres, a beautiful, quaint island that is home to the stunning beach of Playa Norte. Isla Mujeres is less crowded than many other places in the Riviera Maya, so spend the first two days enjoying the atmosphere at a relaxed pace.

  • Fly into Cancun.
  • From the airport, travel by pre-booked transportation (we used Happy Shuttle ) to the Puerto Juarez ( Ultramar ) ferry terminal. The ride from the airport to the ferry terminal takes about a half hour. [ $35 USD ]
  • Take the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Ferries depart every 30 minutes throughout the day. The ferry ride itself only takes about 20 minutes. [ 100 pesos per person ]
  • Settle into your hotel.
  • Walk around town or relax at Playa Norte (North Beach).
  • OVERNIGHT: Isla Mujeres

Accommodation notes: We stayed at the Casa Sirena bed & breakfast and absolutely loved it! [ Approximately $165 USD per night ] The daily evening rooftop happy hour (the “ sunset for the fun set” ) with the other guests was a blast and one of the highlights of our time in Isla Mujeres. We love meeting and chatting with other travelers. Wherever you decide to stay, just note that for a brief two-day visit, staying at the Northern tip of the island makes the most sense. This part of Isla Mujeres is very walkable with plenty of restaurants and shops, the ferry dock, and the gorgeous Playa Norte beach.

Day 2: Isla Mujeres All Day

  • Rent a golf cart to explore the island. (Our hotel helped arrange our rental for us.) [ Approximately 700 pesos for a day’s rental ]
  • Visit the  T ortugranja (Turtle Sanctuary). [ 60 pesos per person ]
  • Stop at Punta Sur (the southern tip of the island) for spectacular cliffside views and a walk around the sculpture garden. [ 60 pesos per person ]
  • Spend the afternoon beachside — either at one of the many beach clubs around the island (like Zama ) or at Playa Norte .

Day 3: Playa Del Carmen

  • Check out of your hotel in Isla Mujeres.
  • Take the ferry from Isla Mujeres back to the Puerto Juarez ferry terminal in Cancun. Ferries depart every 30 minutes. [ 100 pesos per person ]
  • From Cancun, travel to Playa Del Carmen via the ADO bus (cheaper) or private transportation (easier). We pre-arranged private transportation through Happy Shuttle for simplicity’s sake [ $64 USD ]. The ride from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen takes about 1 hour, 15 minutes. (If you opt for the bus, note that you must first take a taxi from the ferry terminal to the ADO bus station in downtown Cancun.) [ Taxi from Puerto Juarez ferry terminal to Cancun ADO bus station is approximately 100 pesos. ADO bus tickets from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen are 60 pesos per person. ]
  • Once you arrive in Playa Del Carmen, settle into your hotel.
  • Walk up or down the pedestrian-only Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue). This is the main tourist street in Playa Del Carmen, with lots of restaurants and shops. Keep your eye out for some street performances, especially near the ferry terminal to Cozumel.
  • Or, spend your afternoon enjoying Playa Del Carmen’s wide stretch of white-sand beaches .
  • OVERNIGHT: Playa Del Carmen

Accommodation notes: If you plan to use the ADO bus while in Playa Del Carmen, look for a hotel within walking distance of the ADO bus station (called “ADO Terminal Turistica Playa Del Carmen”). This bus station is on the corner of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Juarez. We stayed at Los Itzaes Hotel , which was only 4½ blocks from the ADO station. [ Approximately $90 USD per night ]

Los Voladores performance in Playa Del Carmen

Los Voladores performance in Playa Del Carmen

Day 4: Day Trip to Xcaret

Xcaret is an eco-archaeological theme park near Playa Del Carmen that features cultural performances, wildlife, snorkeling, a beach, underground rivers you can swim through, and more. This is a big tourist attraction, and as such, it’s quite touristy! (Think Disney World, but much smaller, with a nature focus, and no rides). However, we still found the park to be very beautiful, a lot of fun, and very well-organized.

  • Get an early start, taking the earliest ADO bus to Xcaret from the bus station at the corner of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Juarez. (The bus departed at 8:30 a.m. during our trip.) The ride to Xcaret takes about 30 minutes, with the bus stopping at a couple other parks first.
  • Tip: We booked our Xcaret entrance tickets from the tourist counter in the bus station, and this ticket included our roundtrip bus fare between Playa Del Carmen and Xcaret at no extra cost! There are different Xcaret ticket options. The standard ticket is $99 USD per person. The Xcaret Plus ticket is $129 USD per person (and includes a buffet lunch from your choice of venues, a beer with lunch, snorkel gear rentals, and use of the Xcaret Plus lockers and changing rooms).
  • Spend your day at Xcaret enjoying the activities that most interest you. There is too much to do at the park in one day, so you might want to do some research ahead of time to decide how you’d like to spend your time.
  • After the park activities close down in the evening, stick around for the Xcaret Mexico Espectacular performance, a two-hour-long production that takes you through the story of Mexico’s history. The show begins at 7 p.m. and is no additional cost.
  • Return to Playa Del Carmen via the ADO bus after the evening show. The bus pick-up area is marked outside the park entrance.

Other options: As an alternate to Xcaret park, you could also check out these other nearby parks: Xplor (which has more adventurous activities like ATV courses, zip lining, and swimming through underground rivers) or Xel-Ha (which features primarily water activities).

Natural Pools at Xcaret

Day 5: Snorkeling Day Trip to Akumal

  • In the morning, travel by taxi to Yal-ku Lagoon (a 30-minute ride).   [ Approximately 500 pesos ]
  • Spend a couple hours in the morning experiencing the amazing snorkeling at Yal-ku. [ 200 pesos per person ]
  • From Yal-ku, walk (15 minutes) or take a taxi to La Buena Vida Restaurant & Bar . This is a great casual place to relax by the beach for a while and grab lunch. (We also saw several people swimming out from the restaurant’s beach to snorkel in Half Moon Bay. They said they saw all kinds of beautiful fish out there!)
  • From La Buena Vida, walk (15 minutes) or take a taxi to the public Akumal Beach . Snorkel here, keeping a lookout for the amazing sea turtles.
  • Return to Playa Del Carmen via taxi. Many taxis wait outside the entrance to Akumal Beach. [ Approximately 500 pesos ]

Note: You could also do this day in reverse order – visiting Akumal Beach in the morning and Yal-ku Lagoon in the afternoon. Just know that whichever place you visit in the afternoon will probably have cloudy water from the sand getting kicked up (not so great for snorkeling). I LOVED Yal-ku and am glad we snorkeled there in the morning (though of course that meant the water in Akumal Beach was pretty cloudy during our afternoon visit).

Yal-ku Lagoon - Akumal, Mexico

Day 6: Day Trip to Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is probably the most popular Mayan ruin site, as it’s considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This ancient Mayan city has several beautiful, well-preserved structures, including the famous El Castillo pyramid.

  • Book a day tour to Chichen Itza through a tour company. Chichen Itza is 2.5 hours from Playa Del Carmen, so it’s hard to coordinate this on your own in one day without a rental car. (I’m not going to recommend the tour company we used, because there were some things I didn’t love about the tour.)
  • Look for a tour that also stops for a swim at one of the beautiful cenotes  near Chichen Itza.
  • A stop in the city of  Valladolid is a bonus, but not a must-see for this day trip. If your tour does stop there, it will probably be quite brief and will only allow time to step in the cathedral and see the main square.

Chichen Itza El Castillo - Mexico

El Castillo, Chichen Itza

Day 7: Tulum Beach Day

  • Check out of your hotel in Playa Del Carmen.
  • From the ADO bus station at the corner of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Juarez in Playa Del Carmen, take a bus to Tulum Pueblo (town). The bus ride takes about one hour. [ 70 pesos per person ]
  • If your hotel is in the Tulum beach zone (which I recommend), then take a taxi from the bus station in town to your hotel (about 20 minutes, depending on where along the beach your hotel is located). There will be taxis waiting outside the bus station. [ Approximately 120 pesos depending on the location of your hotel ]
  • Once you are settled into your hotel, find a place to relax by the beach and grab lunch. If your hotel is right on the beach, then that’s easy! If your hotel is on the jungle side of the road and does not have beach access, then you still have many options. The whole stretch of beach is public, so you can sit out with your towel in the sand anywhere near the water. If you want a lounge chair and umbrella, then many of the hotels and restaurants along the beach will let you use theirs, as long as you meet their minimum food & drink purchase requirements.
  • OVERNIGHT: Tulum

Accommodation notes: Stay in the Tulum beach zone if you want convenient access to the beach.  Tulum Pueblo is much cheaper, but it’s about a 15-minute taxi ride to the beach (or a 30-minute bike ride).  We wanted to stay near the beach, but still wanted to keep our hotel costs on the lower end, so we opted to stay at Las Palmas Maya , which is on the jungle side of the beach road. The hotel rooms here are quite minimal, but they do have bathrooms in the individual rooms and 24-hour electricity (which is a bonus for the Tulum beach zone!). [ Approximately $130 USD per night ]

La Zebra, Tulum

La Zebra, Tulum

Day 8: Day Trip to Coba

  • Eat a large breakfast today — there won’t be many options for lunch near Coba. Pack snacks for later!
  • Make arrangements for a taxi driver to stay with you for several hours during today’s itinerary (your hotel should be able to help you with this). Hiring a taxi for the day will allow you to visit a few places with the same driver, who will wait for you at each stop. (Just make sure to discuss the locations and the price up front.) [ Approximately 1300 pesos ]
  • Ride in your taxi to Coba Ruins (a 1-hour drive). When getting dropped off, make sure to discuss where you can meet your driver when you’re done.   [ Coba entrance fee is 70 pesos per person ]
  • Once at Coba Ruins, climb to the top of Nohuch Mul pyramid for beautiful bird’s-eye views, stand in the old Mayan ball courts, and wander off the beaten path to see some of the tucked-away ruins.
  • I highly recommend renting bikes to travel between the ruin sites — it’s fun! Alternatively, you can hire someone to do the peddling for you in a bike taxi. [ Bike rentals are 50 pesos per person. Bike taxis are 190 pesos per taxi (a taxi seats two people). ]
  • Once done at the ruins, meet back up with your taxi driver and have them take you to one (or more) of the three cenotes near Coba:  Tankach-Ha, Choo-Ha, and Multum-Ha . You can purchase tickets for these cenotes BEFORE you leave the Coba Ruins parking lot, at the small building near the entrance of the lot. The cenotes themselves, however, are about a 10-minute drive from the ruins. We only visited Tankach-Ha during our visit, but the other two are supposed to be beautiful (and quiet!). Tankach-Ha is the busiest of the three due to it’s high jumping platforms for leaping into the water! (Though you can still enter the water without jumping — like I did!) [ Each cenote costs 55 pesos per person ]
  • After you visit the cenotes, your driver can take you back to Tulum.
  • Spend the rest of your afternoon by the beach in Tulum.

Transportation note: There is also the option of taking the ADO bus from Tulum Pueblo to Coba Ruins. However, it doesn’t run very frequently, and you will probably end up stuck at Coba for longer than you’d like. It would also make it difficult to visit the cenotes near Coba.

Climbing Coba Ruins - Mexico

Climbing Nohuch Mul pyramid at Coba Ruins

Day 9: Tulum Ruins & Grand Cenote

Tulum Ruins are less impressive than the ruins at Chichen Itza or Coba, but their location alongside a cliff above the ocean is spectacular. It’s definitely worth the stop for these views!

  • Early in the morning, catch a taxi to Tulum Ruins (about 15 minutes). [ Approximately 130 pesos ]
  • Get to Tulum Ruins early to beat the crowds (the ruins open at 8 a.m.). [ Entrance is 70 pesos per person ]
  • After seeing the ruins, take a short taxi ride to the Playa Paraiso Beach Club at Hotel el Paraiso. (Or, if you’re full of energy, you can walk 25 minutes south along the beach road to get there.) Plenty of taxis will be waiting outside Tulum Ruins.
  • Relax at Playa Paraiso for a few hours. This is a prime beach location in Tulum — it’s absolutely beautiful with the flat stretch of white sand and the palm trees.
  • End your day with a trip to Grand Cenote . It closes at 5 p.m., so aim to head over there by 3 p.m., if not sooner. There will be many taxis waiting at Playa Paraiso that can take you to Grand Cenote (a 15-minute ride). [ Approximately 170 pesos for the taxi ride ]
  • Grand Cenote is an open-air cenote (the roof caved in a long, long time ago). It’s beautiful with the sunlight dancing off the shimmery light green water. Swim and snorkel amidst the beauty. [ Entrance fee 150 pesos per person ]
  • Take a taxi back to your hotel in Tulum. There will be taxis waiting outside Grand Cenote. [ Approximately 200 pesos depending on the location of your hotel ]

Day 10: Fly Home

  • Travel by pre-booked private transportation from Tulum to the Cancun airport (1 hour, 30 minutes). [ Approximately $90 USD ]

Would you go back? What was your favorite?

February 17, 2018 at 6:58 pm

Hi Darlene – Yes I’d go back in a heartbeat! It feels so hard to pick a favorite because each place brings something special, but if I had to choose, I’d say Isla Mujeres. I just really loved the vibe there and also appreciated that it was easy to get around on my own by foot or with a golf cart. Not to mention there are some truly beautiful spots on the island!! It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the simple moments. The only downside to Isla Mujeres is that it’s further away from some of the region’s big attractions, like the Mayan ruins and cenotes. On the other hand, a place like Playa Del Carmen makes an excellent base for seeing the attractions because of it’s central location, but I was less drawn to the city itself. (I tend to enjoy smaller, quaint places over busier, crowded ones – but that’s just my preference.) I truly enjoyed each of the places though and would return to any of them!

We are going to rivera maya end of april. We are staying grand bliss. Do you know of great scuba diving in area.

April 20, 2018 at 7:36 pm

How exciting that you have a trip to the Riviera Maya coming soon! I have actually never scuba dived (I need to add that to my list! 🙂 ) so I don’t know of the best places from personal experience. However, I have heard the diving in Cenote Dos Ojos (near Tulum) is pretty awesome. That would be about an hour from your resort at the Grand Bliss. I believe there are also diving spots in the town of Puerto Morelos, and that would only be about 15 minutes from where you are staying.

Enjoy your trip!

That looks so fun! I think we’re going in March with our three kids, 9, 6, and 4. How many of the places you visited charged for parking? We are thinking we should probably have a rental car… what do you think?

September 27, 2018 at 11:44 pm

Hi Danielle! We didn’t rent a car during our trip to Mexico, but if you guys are up for it, I think it would definitely make getting around easier for you. Especially since you will be traveling with your three kids! I unfortunately didn’t note parking charges without a car, so I’m sorry I can’t help provide more info there. I wish you a wonderful trip! There is so much to do, and I think your kids will have a lot of fun too 🙂

Best and Worst Times to Visit Riviera Maya

The best times to visit Riviera Maya are January through April, the same as Cancun and Cozumel. The worst times are September and October during the peak rainy season.

The three popular tourist destinations are located close to each other and share similar weather and peak tourism seasons.

Riviera Maya is a popular resort area on the Caribbean coast of Mexico that lies between Cancun to the north and Tulum to the south. The dominant city is Playa del Carmen.

Cozumel, the largest island in Mexico, lies about 12 miles across the water from Playa del Carmen, which is Riviera Maya’s most popular tourist attraction because of its extensive dining and shopping district along Fifth Avenue. Western Caribbean cruise visitors to Cozumel often take a day trip over to Playa del Carmen.

Cancun and Riviera Maya are resort destinations while Cozumel is mainly a cruise destination. But they share common weather, and as a result they all have the same best times to go.

Four Best Times to Go

April is the best month to visit for a combination of warm temperatures and low chances of rain.

April’s average high temperature reaches into the upper 80s Fahrenheit or about 30 Celsius for the first time of the year, according to Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, the national weather service of Mexico. The average lows climb several more degrees as well.

April also is one of the driest months of the year with an average rainfall of less than three inches.

Despite slightly cooler weather, March is the next best month to vacation in Riviera Maya. Rainfall averages less than two inches a month.

Average high temperatures range in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit for January through March, which is warm enough for time on the beach. Temperatures climb again in April.

But the average low temperatures—mostly at night—drop into the upper 60s Fahrenheit. They often will make seawater uncomfortable for swimming in combination with cooling trade winds, especially in the mornings.

January isn’t as ideal as March and April. It is both a few degrees cooler than February and March and also has a much higher chance of rain.

Although peak season is usually December through April, December and January have somewhat higher rainfall than the other months.

Five Worst Months to Go

The Caribbean hurricane season brings plenty of rain to Riviera Maya.

The season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but the area around Riviera Maya has a big spike in rain during June, a slight pause in July and then picks up strongly from August through November.

September and October historically are the worst months for rain when total rainfall averages 9 to 10 inches a month.

Average high temperatures climb to 90 degrees or higher from May through September.

Resort prices usually hit a low point in September and October, which may be appealing to adventurous tourists on a limited budget.

Three Other Months

May, July and December average about three to four inches of rain each month and present better opportunities to go than June and the August through November period.

Beaches will be less crowded and prices may be lower in May and July than the more popular peak season of December through April.

May and July are ideal for beach lovers. They have average high temperatures at 90 degrees Fahrenheit. December’s average high is about 83 degrees Fahrenheit, the National Weather Service of Mexico reports.

26 Unexpected Things to Do in the Riviera Maya, México

09/02/2021 by Emily Becker 2 Comments

There is more to Mexico’s Riviera Maya in the state of Quintana Roo than just relaxing on the beach at an all-inclusive resort. It’s full of fun things to do and incredible places to see off the typical tourist track.

If you’ve been itching for a trip to this part of Mexico and perhaps looking for a different kind of experience than what one might expect, this is the list for you:

Table of Contents

cancun things to do la noria cenote

To visit the Riviera Maya, you’ll most likely fly into Cancún’s International Airport. Cancún gets a bad reputation for being overtouristy and honestly kind of cringey. It’s also where you’ll find the most crowds, the craziest party scene (Playa del Carmen is a close second), and the most overpriced accommodation and food.

If you do decide to stay a couple days in Cancún , though, there are indeed some noteworthy things to do there:

MUSA Underwater Museum

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 101 MUSEOS MÉXICO (@101museos.mexico)

When I first heard about this underwater museum, I was confused. What do you mean, underwater ? Right off the coast, a group of artists and sculptors have their works sitting at the bottom of the ocean. You can see these mind-bending works of art by snorkeling, diving, or riding through on a glass-bottom boat .

b travel riviera maya

One of the coolest ways to enjoy the sea and nearby lagoons in Cancún is by sailing through them. There are mangrove-filled waterways that host a variety of marine wildlife.

To get the most of Cancún’s awesome sailing opportunities, check out this jungle boat tour , which includes a ride through the lagoons.

Isla Mujeres

b travel riviera maya

Isla Mujeres is a long island off the coast of Cancún that you can get to easily by ferry. While it is still quite touristy, it has a sweet island charm and more of a laid-back vibe than Cancún or Playa del Carmen.

It also boasts a neat history. Isla Mujeres means “women’s island,” which comes from the tiny feminine dolls that the Spanish found on its shores when they arrived. Mayan women left the dolls on pilgrimages there on canoes to pray to the divine goddess of fertility, Ixchel. Pretty badass, if you ask me.

Isla Mujeres is a must-stop on any Riviera Maya itinerary. Here are my favorite things to do there:

Rent a golf cart

Once you get to Isla Mujeres, you’ll notice that there aren’t many cars. Most people get around via golf cart, which makes traveling from one end of this beautiful tropical island to the other much easier and more fun than relying on taxis (which are accustomed to gouging desperate tourists).

The most trustworthy spot on the island to rent a golf cart is Prisma . It is just half a block from the ferry dock; you can choose from a regular-sized or large golf cart.

Relax on Playa Norte

b travel riviera maya

Playa Norte’s warm, shallow waters remain calm all day, year round. It’s the perfect place to relax in a beach chair. Many of the beachfront hotels will let you use their chairs if you buy something from their bar or restaurant, which is an easy way to get that perfect shady spot under the palms.

The turquoise waters at Playa Norte are truly a dream, making this one of the most idyllic beaches on the whole Riviera Maya, let alone Isla Mujeres.

Learn at Tortugranja Turtle Sanctuary

Isla Mujeres has plenty of marine life, including sea turtles. These beautiful and peaceful animals are still in danger of poaching; in addition, their habitat is at risk of being eliminated as beachside resorts continue to dominate the coasts of Mexico.

Tortugranja Turtle Sanctuary is a wildlife conservation center that dedicates its time and resources to protecting local sea turtles. You can visit the center to learn about the work they do there, and perhaps even see some turtles up close.

Get sprayed at Punta Sur

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ?????? + ??????? ???? ??? (@travelinglamas)

Punta Sur is the southernmost part of the island and has a large natural area to explore. It’s a far cry from the soft, sandy beach of Playa Norte; instead it has rugged cliffs with crashing waves. This is actually my personal favorite part of the island because of its history and cultural significance for the Mayan people.

This part of the island is a sanctuary for the goddess Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, fertility, and femininity. Before the arrival of the Spanish, there was a sacred temple dedicated to her. Nowadays, you’ll find a statue of the goddess at the entrance of the park.

At the tip of the park, you’ll be able to hike down along the paths to get close enough to the crashing waves to feel the salty spray. There are neat rock arches there, and the whole place is perfect for a photo op!

Swim with whale sharks

cancun things to do

This is by far one of the most popular things to do on Isla Mujeres. Whale sharks are enormous but gentle and harmless creatures. Swimming with them is definitely a bucket-list item for any animal lovers — and Isla Mujeres is one of the best places in Mexico to do it.

The season runs from mid-May until mid-September, with peak times in June and July. Most tour companies only allow one or two people in the water with the whale sharks at a time, and they do not feed them, which is more ethical. Gluup is a reputable company that has a great tour at a decent price.

Stay in the Shell House

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Beautiful Hotels & Resorts (@tasteinhotels)

Casa Caracol, aka “Shell House” in English, is easily one of the coolest Airbnbs you’ll find in the Riviera Maya. The owners made this seashell-shaped home as a retreat for themselves and their friends, but eventually decided to rent it out on Airbnb, much to the public’s delight.

The house has two bedrooms and can house up to four guests, so the little splurge to stay there might be worth it if you are traveling with friends. There is a pool on-site, and it’s all just steps away from the beach.

Puerto Morelos

This small, often-overlooked town is about 30 minutes south of Cancún. A favorite among Mexico-based expats, Puerto Morelos has a chill atmosphere — a far cry from the bustle of Cancún. It even makes a great base for traveling to other places on the Riviera Maya.

Drive the Ruta de Cenotes

cancun things to do cenote verde lucero

Puerto Morelos is the launching point for the legendary Ruta de Cenotes , a 40-kilometer stretch of highway that has over 60 cenotes nearby. If you are renting a car in the Riviera Maya , this is a must! Many of these cenotes are less crowded than others on the Riviera and are in the jungle, with tons of plants and animals around.

Visit the Alfredo Barrera Marín Botanical Garden

The Alfredo Barrera Marín Botanical Garden is the largest botanical garden in all of Mexico, at 65 hectares. This massive garden is made up of different sections in which you can admire different types of local flora. The garden also houses a variety of traditional medicinal plants that are still in use by Mayan people today.

Spend a few hours learning about the different types of plant species and taking in nature’s beauty. This isn’t a very popular spot, so you’ll be able to enjoy a break from the usual Riviera Maya crowds. Admission is 120 pesos ($6 USD) for foreigners and 60 pesos ($3 USD) for Quintana Roo residents.

Similar to Puerto Morelos, Akumal is a small beach town with a relaxed vibe. While it has been a bit overdeveloped with luxury hotels and resorts, it’s worth exploring and has one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the Riviera Maya.

Visit the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary and Rescued Animals

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Akumal Monkey Sanctuary (@akumalmonkeysanctuaryofficial)

There are a variety of monkey species native to the Riviera Maya. At Akumal Monkey Sanctuary and Rescued Animals , you can learn about them and other endangered animals. The sanctuary has tours of the facilities, which allow visitors to see the animals up close. There’s even a tour that includes a cenote visit !

See baby sea turtles

b travel riviera maya

From May to October, it is sea turtle hatching season on the Riviera Maya. Akumal is the best place to see this because of the town’s conservation efforts. Most of the big hotels on the beach there collect the eggs and incubate them before releasing them at sunset. This helps protect the turtles from being poached.

If you want to see the baby turtles, you can check if your hotel or a beachside hotel has such an event. They typically release the turtles around 7 or 8 in the evening.

Playa del Carmen

b travel riviera maya

I have to admit that Playa del Carmen isn’t my favorite place on the Riviera Maya. With its intense nightlife and typical beach crowds, it feels a lot like an adult playground to me, and not in a good way. However, it is the launching point for Cozumel and has a nice beach to check out.

Here are a couple things to do while passing through Playa del Carmen:

Get your adrenaline fix at Xplor

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Xplor Park (@xplorpark)

Xplor is one of those places that I almost could not believe was real when I went there in 2017. It’s a gigantic theme park that incorporates nature and adrenaline-filled thrills. It has several types of zip lines, including one called the Hammock Splash. There are caves to explore, cenotes to swim in, and plenty of other adventures to be had.

You could spend an entire day at Xplor, and it’s a fun stop for families or groups of friends. Tickets can be a bit pricey, but what else do you expect at a theme park? If you want to check out Xplor at night, this tour offers a fire-filled adventure.

Stand-up paddleboard (SUP)

One of my favorite ways to enjoy the beach at Playa del Carmen is by paddleboarding. Aloha Paddle Club has sunrise and sunset options that offer some amazing views of the sea. If you’re new to SUP, Aloha offers classes as well!

Admire street art

b travel riviera maya

Playa del Carmen has an awesome collection of street art, mostly concentrated to the downtown area, which makes spotting it easy. If you want to check out the art with a guide, consider a tour from Playa del Carmen Art Tours .

b travel riviera maya

Cozumel is a large island right off the coast of Playa del Carmen. It has picturesque white-sand beaches all around it, with some of Mexico’s most noteworthy snorkeling and diving spots. The shallow turquoise waters are breathtaking and definitely worth checking out.

Snorkel in the sea

things to do in cancun dive cozumel

The shallow waters just off the coast of Cozumel are perfect for snorkeling, because they’re nice and clear and you’ll find plenty of marine life. El Cielo Bay, home to thousands of starfish and other fish species, is a popular snorkeling spot. Another awesome place is Palancar Reef, known for its abundant colorful corals.

You’ll find loads of places on Cozumel to snorkel. I recommend this tour , which takes you to both El Cielo Bay and Palancar Reef, plus you get to sail around on a catamaran.

Dive in the deep

If you want to up the ante on your underwater adventure, don’t miss out on a memorable dive off the coast of Cozumel. In fact, the island is among the top destinations in the world for diving. The unique underwater landscape off the coast plus the world-class visibility create an overall show-stopping experience.

Dressel Divers is the most reputable diving company on the island, with the best reviews and expertise.

b travel riviera maya

Tulum is a beach lover’s paradise that has changed a lot in recent years. Whereas it used to be a small backpacker’s stop, it has exploded in the last decade to become one of Mexico’s top beach destinations. This comes with a lot of drawbacks for locals and visitors alike, especially if you’re the type of traveler that likes something a bit more low-key.

Even so, it’s totally possible to enjoy the beauty of Tulum without the madness. Here are my favorite things to do there:

Rent a bike

b travel riviera maya

Upon arriving in Tulum, you’re bound to see many people riding bikes. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to get from downtown Tulum to the hotel zone, where the beaches are. Plus, it’s a fun way to get some exercise and enjoy the sunny weather. Another bonus is that many of Tulum’s best cenotes are close enough to ride your bike to.

Renting a bike in Tulum is simple, and there are plenty of places around town where you can do so. It should cost around 120-150 pesos ($6-7.50 USD) per day. You might be able to get an even better deal if renting for multiple days.

If you want to plan ahead, you can rent your bike online with Ola Bike Tulum .

Snorkel in a cenote

b travel riviera maya

So, you had a blast snorkeling in the ocean at Cozumel, and now you want to get a different underwater view. Try snorkeling in a cenote! A few cenotes close to Tulum where you can snorkel are Cenote Cristal, Cenote Carwash, and of course, Gran Cenote .

Gran Cenote is a crowd favorite for snorkeling because there is an abundance of turtles there, which are fun to watch while you snorkel. Not only that, but there are also some epic stalactites and stalagmites that you can see from the water’s surface. We have you covered for everything you need to know before visiting Gran Cenote for your next snorkeling adventure.

Dive in a cenote

Tulum

If you’ve had your fill of snorkeling and can’t wait to get further beneath the water’s surface, try diving in a cenote near Tulum. There are plenty that are ideal for scuba diving because of their many underwater caves and the variety of plant life.

Koox Diving is a favorite among divers, beginner and expert alike. Koox has a wide range of options for cenotes you can dive in, including the legendary Dos Ojos one, which has a reputation for being the most unforgettable dive on the Riviera Maya.

Kaan Luum Lagoon

Tulum

This lagoon is one of Tulum’s best-kept secrets. While it is quite well known to locals, it doesn’t attract very many tourists and remains relatively uncrowded, even during high season. The lagoon is surrounded by the flora and fauna of the dense Mayan jungle, creating an incredible atmosphere for relaxing, swimming, and simply taking in the area’s beauty.

The lagoon usually has a deep turquoise color, but due to contamination in recent years, it has slowly changed to a shade of green, much like what has happened in Bacalar . To avoid contributing to this contamination, make sure to only use reef-safe sunscreen , and do not for any reason throw trash into the lagoon or the area surrounding it.

To get to Kaan Luum, you can take a taxi from Tulum’s downtown area for about 150 pesos ($7.50 USD) each way.

Explore the Sian Ka’an Biosphere

b travel riviera maya

Sian Ka’an is an enormous protected natural area home to one of Mexico’s most biodiverse jungles. The biosphere takes up about 10% of the entire state of Quintana Roo and encompasses nearly twice the area of Rhode Island. That said, only small portions of it are accessible to visitors.

Those small portions are beautiful and worth visiting if you get the chance. You’ll see how truly magnificent the natural world is in this part of Mexico, without the hotels, fancy restaurants, and hoards of foreigners.

This tour will take you on a boat ride through the wetlands of Sian Ka’an to peek at wildlife, mangrove forests, and a coral reef.

Small Towns You Can’t Miss

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lu e Euclides Torezan (@casalabordo)

This small village just south of Playa del Carmen is an off-the-beaten-path beach paradise that very few tourists think to visit. While Xpu-Ha’s gorgeous beach is not a secret to locals, it’s still quite unknown to foreigners and therefore makes for the perfect quiet getaway.

You won’t find nearly as many hotels in Xpu-Ha, but there are plenty of mom-and-pop restaurants on the beach where you can have a delicious meal. I recommend the ceviche!

Felipe Carrillo Puerto

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Na’atik (@naatikmexico)

This small town is not a tourist destination by any means, but it’s definitely worth a stop if you want to get a feel for the real Riviera Maya. The town has a charming atmosphere, and it’s the perfect place to make a pit stop on a road trip through the area.

Also, many workers are from Felipe Carrillo Puerto and surrounding communities and commute to work at the big resorts and hotels along the coast.

If you are interested in staying in Carrillo for longer and want to learn Spanish (or even Mayan!), consider booking an immersive exchange experience with Na’atik Language and Culture Institute . It offers programs that include a home stay, language classes, cooking classes, and excursions around the area. It’s the perfect place to dive into the local culture.

Archaeological Sites on the Riviera Maya

If you’re a big anthropology, history, archaeology, etc. nerd like me, you’ve definitely heard about the Riviera Maya’s awesome archaeological sites. We have you covered with a more in-depth look at the best Mayan archaeological sites , too!

Cenotes in the Riviera Maya

There are plenty of cenotes to choose from on the Riviera Maya. We have a full breakdown of cenotes near Cancún as well as cenotes near Tulum , plus a helpful map of them all:

Public Beaches on the Riviera Maya

You may already know about the most popular public beaches in Cancún, but did you know that there are plenty more that are just waiting for you? Here’s a map of the public beaches on the Riviera Maya:

Pin me for later:

b travel riviera maya

If you’re like me and you enjoy finding places where few tourists go, there are still plenty of amazing locations in hot spots like the Riviera Maya — where tourism is concentrated at the mega-resorts along the coast between Tulum and Cancún.

Tulum airport opens to U.S. flights, helping tourists skip Cancún crowds

Traveling to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico is about to get easier.

Starting this week, visitors to the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula can say goodbye to the crowded halls of the Cancún airport and potentially hours-long drive south; U.S.-based flights to recently opened Tulum International Airport start Wednesday.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines begin flights on March 28, followed by United Airlines on March 31. The new routes will connect Tulum to major hubs like Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, and Newark.

Air Canada starts flying to Tulum in May, and JetBlue Airways and Panama’s Copa Airline s in June.

“Imagine taking a morning flight from the United States, and by lunchtime, you’re sipping margaritas on our beautiful beach,” said Laura Diver, the marketing manager for Colibri Boutique Hotels , which manages several properties in Tulum.

A bumpy start

The Tulum airport, like many of the big recently opened infrastructure projects championed by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, remains a work in progress.

Construction continues despite some domestic flights beginning in December. Karla Cayetano, a reservations manager at the Kanan Tulum resort, said workers were still “finishing some details” to the terminal and access road. Despite this, she said some of the resort’s guests are already arriving there rather than to Cancún.

Ground transportation options are limited and costs are high. David Ortiz Mena, the president of the Tulum Hotel Association, highlighted this as a “great concern” in a December statement . Talks with the airport and government authorities over lowering the ground transportation tax were still underway in mid-March.

And protesters have blocked the access road to the airport, and adjacent Tren Maya station, over land rights.

The issues are not unlike those that have plagued the Tren Maya since it opened in December. Trains are limited and delays are frequent on the ambitious and controversial 947-mile passenger rail loop pushed by the Mexican president. The booking system has been unreliable . Much of the track that will eventually encircle the Yucatán has yet to open.

But the Tulum airport, like the Tren Maya, is widely expected to significantly improve access to the Mayan Riviera once the kinks are worked out.

Alternative to Cancún

The Mayan Riviera is one of the most popular beach destinations in Mexico. It stretches from north of the all-inclusive resorts of Playa del Carmen to south of chic Tulum, with its beachside Mayan ruins.

Last year, the Riviera Maya boasted the most available hotel rooms — and occupied rooms — in the country, beating nearby Cancún and Los Cabos on the Pacific coast, according to data from the government of Mexico’s tourism secretary.

The Cancún airport is the main gateway for visitors to the region. In fact, last year the airport was the main gateway to all foreign visitors to Mexico, and the most popular among American tourists. A presentation from Mexico’s tourism secretary shows nearly 4.8 million American visitors to Mexico passed through the Cancún airport last year, representing more than a third of all the Americans who visited the country.

That’s why airlines are clamoring to fly to Tulum, even with its early issues. The new airport gives travelers an alternative to the busy Cancún airport.

“We’re pretty excited about some of the [travel] demand we’re seeing,” said Amy Martin, vice president of North America network planning at Delta.
