An Expert's Guide to Booking the Perfect Alaska Cruise in 2023

Alaska has been a popular cruise destination for decades, and the industry has continued a trajectory of growth. Each summer season there seems to be another cruise line sailing Alaskan waters, while the longtime incumbents are relentless in their addition of new itineraries, amenities, and excursions.
What looks like an endless buffet of choice can lead to analysis paralysis for many first-time Alaska visitors—even if they’re veteran cruisers who have already figured out big questions like their preferred cruise line or favorite ship class.
Here are five questions to consider in order to find the best Alaska cruise for you.
When is The Best Time to Book?
Alaska is a popular destination for multi-generational groups . Any large group booking multiple cabins or needing more than a pair of spots on shore excursions should start thinking about booking Alaska cruises about a year in advance to secure the best availability for their group size. So too should travelers who have specific non-negotiables on things like stateroom category, ship, or itinerary.
However, that doesn’t mean that last-minute bookers are out of luck. While popular itineraries and cabin categories have a tendency to sell out early (balcony accommodations are particularly sought after for scenic Inside Passage cruising), there’s still often enough inventory left for cruise lines to offer enticing deals for the summer during the “wave” booking season from January through March. They’ll even offer last-minute specials right up until the time of sailing, but selection will be limited and the most popular shore excursions will have long wait lists.
Cruise lines offer enticing deals for the summer during “wave" season from January through March.
Is it better to cruise one-way or roundtrip?
Like almost any choice one makes when booking a cruise, it all comes down to personal taste. Roundtrip cruises offer the convenience of embarking and disembarking at the same port (typically Seattle, Vancouver, or San Francisco), but itineraries are generally limited to Southeast Alaska and the Inside Passage.
Visitors wanting to see Alaska’s Interior, Fairbanks, and Denali National Park , should book a one-way cruise to or from Anchorage (which is served by the cruise ports at Whittier and Seward) for land-based touring either before or after their Inside Passage cruise. Many cruise lines, including Holland America Line , Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity offer fully packaged “Cruisetours” that combine a one-way Inside Passage cruise with a rail or motor coach itinerary mainly focused on Denali, but also offering journeys to other parts of Southcentral Alaska.
Is Seward or Whittier a better port for Anchorage?
Each cruise line has their preferred port—Holland America Line and Princess Cruises berth at Whittier. Norwegian, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas—currently berthing at Seward—will move operations to Whittier upon completion of berths currently under construction. Most other one-way cruises berth in Seward.
Whittier is closer to Anchorage, and some itineraries even take disembarking passengers directly to Denali or Talkeetna the same day. Whittier is also a convenient port for cruising College Fjord, which most northbound sailings do on the final day before arriving in Whittier. Whittier is, however, a tiny community that is little more than a deep-water port, while Seward is a larger community and regional base for a more diverse collection of tours and activities.
Seward is farther from Anchorage, but the train or coach ride is roughly an extra hour of travel through a spectacular mountain pass on the Kenai Peninsula, then the lines merge near Whittier and the last hour of the journey is the same, hugging the Chugach Mountains alongside Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage.
It’s worth noting that shoreside transportation outside of cruise line-operated transfers can be more limited in Whittier, so passengers embarking there may wish to ensure they include transfers from Anchorage in their cruise package. From Seward, travelers wanting to spend a few days exploring Kenai Fjords National Park or one of the wilderness lodges can book Alaska Railroad transfers on their regular scheduled service.
I've been to Alaska before—how can I cruise differently?
Cruisers who are veterans at Inside Passage itineraries on the big ships have really only seen a preview of the nooks and crannies of the region. Indigenous-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises operates small-ship sailings from Sitka, getting into the straits and narrows that the big ships won’t fit, and oftentimes determining itineraries by reports of sea life migrations and weather conditions.
Return visitors who still want that big ship experience might try a different category of cruise line. The major operators—Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, are all premium-tier cruise lines, but the luxury cruise lines have also deployed ships to Alaskan waters.
Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth is operating roundtrip Vancouver sailings, bringing onboard topflight lecturers ranging from adventure traveler Bear Grylls to undersea archaeologist Mensun Bound on select voyages. On every voyage, guests will find guides from Alaska Native Voices, sharing the cultural history and lore of the local Huna people to Sit’ Eeti Gheeyi (Glacier Bay National Park), and guest speakers from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
Silversea has “Door-to-Door” pricing on many of its Alaska cruises , meaning the cruise fare includes airfare, hotels, and all transfers—including transfers from home to the departure airport. Onboard the all-suite ships, there’s butler service in every suite, fine dining, and select shore excursions included. The largest Silversea ship sailing to Alaska also carries just under 600 guests, allowing for port calls at lesser-visited stops like Wrangell, Haines, and Valdez.
Are there less-crowded alternatives?
Hurtigruten, the Norwegian expedition cruise line, offers sailings between Vancouver and Nome , hitting not only the lesser-visited spots on the Inside Passage, but also the virtually untouristed and volcano-dotted Alaska Peninsula, where guests can spot Brown Bears in Katmai National Park, go bird-watching in St. Paul Island and uninhabited St. Matthew Island in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, and explore the eerie ghost town of Unga.
Closer afield, but no less secluded is the Prince William Sound Explorer from Uncruise, where guests will depart Whittier and wake up among the glaciers of little-visited Icy Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. Much of the itinerary is “Captain’s choice” based on conditions and sealife movements, but the massive Columbia and Meares glaciers and the Sound communities of Cordova and Valdez—also off the big ship routes—hold prized spots on the itinerary.

Alaska Glaciers
One of the biggest reasons people visit.
Glaciers feel alive. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.

Alaska Wildlife
Untamed, just like alaska.
Alaska is home to a rich array of wildlife, from the famous Big Five animals that live in Denali National Park — grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep and caribou — to bald eagles and humpback whales that migrate through the Inside Passage. On a cruise to Alaska, live a nature lover's dream in the land where guests can catch postcard-worthy sights.

Alaska Mountains & National Parks
National treasures.
With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent. Meanwhile, Glacier Bay National Park has over 2,000 square miles of glacial coverage. Along with Wrangell-St. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.

Don't just visit this famous land, live it on Alaska excursions. Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter. Watch migrating humpback whales from the deck of a catamaran or Native craftsman carve a traditional totem pole, and expand your Alaska cruise experience.

Endicott Arm
Endicott Arm is a jewel in Alaska’s crown. This 30-mile waterway is surrounded by cliffs, valleys and dozens of waterfalls. When you cruise to Alaska with Princess, sail through one of the most iconic locations in the Great Land — Glacier Bay National Park. Hubbard Glacier
The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean. What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. See it for yourself on an Alaska cruise with Princess.

Icy Strait Point
Icy Strait Point is home to the remote Tlingit village of Hoonah, home to fewer than 800 people and a deep Native history. The nearby Spasski River Valley holds one of the world’s largest populations of brown bears, who are often found hunting for salmon in the rivers. Zipline over the wilderness, watch a tribal dance or kayak in coastal waters to see the wildlife up close during your Alaska cruise vacation.

Valdez is situated in Prince William Sound and serves as the gateway to the interior of Alaska. Often referred to as the "Little Switzerland", Valdez is known for its breathtaking panorama of snow-capped mountains and glaciers. It is also well-known for its role in the transportation of crude oil from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which ends in Valdez. Explore the charming waterfront area and take in the flavors of Valdez through culinary experiences at restaurants such as the Valdez Brewery and the Fat Mermaid.

Victoria, B.C.
At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure.

Alaska Cruise Experience
Princess has a 50-year legacy of sharing the best places and experiences with guests. On an Alaska cruise, unpack once and explore glaciers, wildlife and national parks.
What to Expect on an Alaska Cruisetour [ Land + Sea Vacation ] Cruisetours combine a 7 day cruise with a multi-day land experience, with a choice of visits to Denali, Kenai, Copper River, Canada's Yukon Territory, Anchorage, Haines, Talkeetna, and Fairbanks. The Most Popular Route: Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks The typical Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks [ or in reverse order ] cruisetour is offered before or after a north - or -southbound Gulf of Alaska Voyage of the Glaciers cruise, sailing between Vancouver and either Seward or Whittier, the two main docking ports for Anchorage. When you disembark your cruise ship you will head for Anchorage via motorcoach or, if they're sailing with Princess Cruises, board a "direct to the wilderness" train directly at Whittier to Denali. The train gets you there sooner. From Anchorage you go on up to Denali National Park, a 6-million-acre preserve full of wildlife (bears, moose, dall sheep, fox, eagles and more), massive glaciers and majestic mountains and valleys, sweeping views of subarctic tundra, and Denali (formally known as Mt. McKinley), North America's highest peak at 20,320 feet. Travelers stay at lodges in or around the park perimeter, some owned directly by Princess. After a one or two day visit you'll go by train to Fairbanks, which is a hub for amazing activities in its outlying areas, including paddle-wheel day cruises on the Chena and Tanana rivers, jet-boat rides, and excursions to gold mines and retired dredges. Passengers typically fly home from Fairbanks. Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks cruisetours generally run between 10 and 14 nights. A typical route, such as Princess's popular "Denali Adventure" tours, spends two days at Denali and one in Fairbanks, with the option of adding a second day in Fairbanks and one in Anchorage. Optional extensions to Kenai Peninsula and/or the Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve.

Glaciers feel alive. National Treasures
With national parks and four of North America's tallest mountains, Alaska's wilderness has been preserved for generations.
Alaska Excursions Don't just visit this famous land, live it on Alaska excursions. Learn more about Alaska Excursions
Alaska: Whales, Wonders & Wildlife After the kind of year we just had, now that we're cruising again, we think you've earned it: Spend Summer in Alaska. One very cool place. One hot destination! One great geyaway!
You Can A-Fjord These Adventures Watch for wildlife as you cruise through enchanting fjords, narrow inlets surrounded by massive glacial walls. At places like Misty Fjords or Kenai Fjords, you'll sail across the edge of where mountains, volcanic formations and turquoise waters converge. Be sure to snap a photo while you're there.
Take A Hike Take a hike with great naturalist guides while visiting Talkeetna and Denali Alaska. Stretch you legs on trails from easy to epic. See Denali ( Mt. McKinley ) without national park crowds and all day bus tours. Owners Howard and Noelle Carbone have shared the wonders of Denali with Alaska's visitors since starting the family business in 1993. Princess guests staying at the Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge can take the Byers Lake Nature Walk and Denali Wilderness Hike. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity guests staying at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge can take the Talkeetna Lakes Hike.
Glacier Sight-Soaring Generally, Alaska glaciers are viewed from one angle, so you can see that they are massive, but flightseeing - taking a small, low-flying plane over the landscape for a true bird's-eye view - allows you to see just how vast these rivers of ice can be. Take up an excursion out of Misty Fjord in Ketchikan, or soar above the massive Denali mountain with a Talkeetna adventure tour group. You may even get the chance to climb one of these icy giants.
Six Million Acres Of Discovery Towering high in the center of the Alaska Range is the Denali, North America's tallest peak at 20,310 feet. Central to the cultural heritage of the native peoples who have lived here for thousands of years, the giant mountain is the ultimate symbol of the Alaskan wild. Denali National Park remains a wild kingdom, where animals large and small, roam free. View Dall sheep, wolves, caribou, moose and the mighty grizzly bear among many. And come summer, they are joined by more than 160 species of migratory birds.

Deal alert: 7-night Alaska cruises starting at $38 a day
It's deal time for Alaska cruises — if you're willing to travel on short notice.
Several of the world's biggest cruise lines — including Princess Cruises , Holland America , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean — have recently been offering unsold cabins on soon-to-depart Alaska sailings for as low as $38 a day.
Some of the lowest-priced offers in absolute terms are coming from Princess. As of Tuesday, the line was showing a five-night Alaska voyage out of Vancouver, British Columbia, for just $249 — or about $50 a day.
The "Alaska Sampler" sailing on the line's 2,600-passenger Grand Princess includes calls in Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska. It kicks off May 1 — just 20 days from now.
Royal Caribbean on Tuesday was marketing a seven-night Alaska sailing scheduled for May 26 for even less on a per-day basis. The one-way trip from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver started at $269 — or about $38 a day.
Royal Caribbean's sister line, Celebrity Cruises , on Tuesday also was selling seven-night voyages to Alaska for under $300. Several upcoming departures started at just $299.
Notably, the one major line that wasn't offering at least one early season Alaska departure in the $300 range as of Tuesday was the line that is best known for super-low fares: Carnival Cruise Line . The line's early season Alaska departures on Tuesday were priced starting at $629 — more than twice the starting rates at most of its competitors.
The last-minute offers come as cruise lines look to fill unsold cabins for the very early part of the Alaska cruise season, which is just beginning this month. The Alaska cruise season typically begins in late April and lasts until the fall.

Here are more of the best cruise deals in Alaska that we're seeing right now, all available as of midday Tuesday:
- A seven-night sailing out of Vancouver on Holland America's Volendam departing May 17. Fares start at $309 — or about $44 a day.
- A seven-night sailing from Vancouver to Seward on Norwegian Spirit departing May 17. Fares start at $349 — or about $50 a day.
- A seven-night sailing from Whittier, Alaska, to Vancouver on Grand Princess departing May 13. Fares start at $329 — or about $47 a day.
- A seven-night sailing from Whittier to Vancouver on Sapphire Princess departing May 24. Fares start at $329 — or about $47 a day.
- A seven-night sailing from Seward to Vancouver on Celebrity Millennium departing May 19. Fares start at $299 — or about $43 a day
Princess on Tuesday also was offering a four-night Alaska Sampler sailing from Vancouver scheduled for Sept. 26 for just $228 — the lowest price for any Alaska sailing currently for sale in 2023. The trip will take place on the line's Crown Princess.
The sailings above typically include stops at the southeastern Alaska towns of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway, as well as a visit to at least one glacier. Some bring a visit to Glacier Bay National Park .
The fine print on Alaska cruise deals
It's worth noting that the deeply discounted fares above are only available for windowless interior cabins. These are the lowest-category cabins on each of the ships. You'll sometimes pay considerably more for a room with an ocean view or a balcony cabin.
Related: The best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler
For instance, ocean-view cabins (cabins with a window) on the Grand Princess sailing from Whittier to Vancouver departing May 13 were listed Tuesday on the Princess website for $599. That's a whopping $270 more than a windowless cabin. Balcony cabins on the sailing were listed for $1,132 — more than three times the amount of an interior cabin.
All the fares are also per-person rates and are based on two people staying in a cabin. They're not available for solo travelers.
Additionally, while the rates include accommodations, meals and entertainment, they don't include port taxes and fees. Those mandatory extras will add another $164 to $335 to the cost of the trips mentioned above, depending on the ports the ships visit.
Cruise lines typically advertise their fares without port taxes and fees included, then add these costs to final bills at checkout.

The Most Affordable Alaska Cruises
Courtesy of Holland America Line
There's no better time than now to book your dream vacation to The Great Land. Cruise vacations are more popular than ever, and affordable cruises are getting harder to find – especially for beloved destinations like Alaska.
Cruisers can nab some of the lines' best deals of the year during wave season. This period, which extends from January to March, refers to the "tidal wave" of lower pricing across the cruising industry during this time. Some cruise lines even kick off their sales in December, so it's advisable to begin your search for discounted pricing early.
Below, we've included some of the best Alaska cruise deals available right now for sailings in 2024 and 2025. All quoted prices are per person for double occupancy and were accurate at the time of writing. Keep in mind: Each itinerary may be available on multiple dates; we've listed the date with the lowest starting price to get you the best value.
Read on to explore the top options for an affordable Alaska cruise.
Find your perfect cruise
Holland America Line
Holland America's "Time of Your Life" wave season deal features up to 40% off bookings for select sailings from summer 2024 through spring 2025; the sale ends at the end of February. You can also add the premium "Have It All" bundle. This added perk features a signature drink package , specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access. The exact pricing and benefits of the package depend on the length of the cruise. The wave season pricing also features a complimentary stateroom upgrade, reduced deposits, and free or discounted fares for kids.
7-Day Glacier Discovery Southbound
Holland America's seven-day voyage aboard Noordam includes an afternoon cruising in Hubbard Glacier and a full day of sailing through picturesque Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. The ship also calls on the ports of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, with one additional day of scenic cruising on the Inside Passage, before disembarking in Vancouver. Plan to stay an extra day in Vancouver to explore on your own, or opt for a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour with Holland America (complete with luggage service and an airport transfer) before taking a flight home later that evening.
This southbound itinerary is also available on May 25, 2025, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam , starting at $679 per person.
7-Day Alaska Inside Passage
This round-trip sailing on Zaandam from Vancouver highlights the Inside Passage with a day of scenic cruising, plus a limited stop in Tracy Arm Inlet for excursions, before reaching the coastal towns of Juneau and Skagway. Then, you'll enjoy another day of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, followed by a stop in Ketchikan and cruising the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver .
The Tracy Arm fjord features glacier-covered mountains and the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the country. It is also home to abundant wildlife, including whales, harbor seals, bald eagles, bears and mountain goats. Book the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer excursion to see the majestic beauty of the Tracy Arm wilderness and the twin Sawyer Glaciers up close. You might even see and hear ice calving into the pristine waters. You'll cruise through Stephens Passage on your way back to meet the ship in Juneau.
Zaandam sails this itinerary in 2025, as well. The lowest fare starts at $629 per person for the voyage on May 14, 2025.
Princess Cruises
Courtesy of Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises' wave season deals feature up to 40% off cruise prices, complimentary room upgrades, $100 deposits, and free fares for third and fourth guests in the same stateroom or suite. The advertised fares on the Princess Cruises website are for the line's MedallionClass experience, which includes dining at the complimentary onboard restaurants, entertainment on the ship, fitness facilities, and the youth and teen clubs. You can add optional upgrades, such as a beverage package, specialty dining, shore excursions and Wi-Fi access, either individually or with a Princess Plus or Princess Premier package.
7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound)
Princess' seven-day itinerary aboard Grand Princess features the lowest available fare for the line's 2024 Alaska season. The itinerary starts with a relaxing sea day, followed by stops in three ports of call in Alaska: Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. You'll also have two days of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord before disembarking in Whittier, near Anchorage .
The southbound voyage (which is the reverse itinerary) on Grand Princess departs May 15, 2024, from Anchorage and also starts at $398 per person. Or, you can sail that southbound itinerary on Sapphire Princess on May 18, 2024, for the same price.
In 2025, you can book this itinerary on Caribbean Princess for as low as $467 per person, embarking on May 10, 2025.
7-Day Inside Passage (Roundtrip Vancouver)
This shoulder season sailing in September is available on Grand Princess. The round-trip voyage from Vancouver features two days at sea; one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier; and stops in the coastal towns of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. This Grand Princess itinerary is also available on May 27, 2025, for as low as $547 per person.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian's current "Free At Sea" promotion includes a free unlimited open bar package, free specialty dining, free shore excursions and complimentary Wi-Fi access. You'll also find additional deals like 50% off deposits, free third and fourth guests (or $99 per additional person, depending on the sailing), and free airfare for a second guest. Be sure to check the terms and conditions before booking a Norwegian sailing.
7-Day Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway
Norwegian's sailing from Seward to Vancouver on Norwegian Jewel features two days cruising through Hubbard Glacier, where you'll be able to book the Hubbard Glacier & Wilderness Explorer excursion for an up-close look at North America's largest tidewater glacier. Afterward, the ship calls on Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove).
In Ketchikan, reserve a spot for the Alaskan Cultural & Lumberjack Show Experience, which includes an entertaining show, a chance to learn about Alaska Native culture, and a tasting of local food and wines. Alaska also offers some of the best fishing conditions in North America, so anglers may want to consider booking a private excursion to go fishing for halibut or salmon. After several days in port, enjoy one more day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver.
In 2025, the seven-day Hubbard Glacier & Skagway itinerary will sail from Vancouver to Whittier. The lowest fare for this cruise starts at $529 per person aboard the Norwegian Jade on May 5, 2025.

For a bucket list adventure, splurge on the helicopter and dog-sledding excursion to Mendenhall Glacier from Skagway. You can also opt for another once-in-a-lifetime trip: a flightseeing tour by floatplane. You'll fly into the wilderness, kayak across a stream and then hike the surface of the Norris Glacier, a remote glacier in the Coast Mountains that's only accessible by plane or on foot.
If you're looking forward to 2025, you can book a similar itinerary from Whittier to Vancouver on April 28, 2025, starting at $499 per person on Norwegian Jade.

Courtesy of Carnival Cruise Line

You can join Carnival 's VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) Club to unlock even more deals and additional perks. Current specials include reduced deposits, up to 35% off fares, free room upgrades, onboard credit and discounts for families traveling in the same stateroom.
7-Day Alaska from Seattle
This seven-day voyage on Carnival Spirit sails round-trip from Seattle and features one day to explore the ship while at sea, plus a scenic cruising day in Tracy Arm Fjord. Ports of call include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, as well as a late evening stop in Victoria before you disembark the next day in Seattle. For your day in Ketchikan, consider booking the award-winning Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour on the famed Aleutian Ballad from the Discovery Channel show, "Deadliest Catch."
This itinerary is also offered on Carnival Luminosa . If you are sailing in 2025, you can book the same seven-day cruise starting at $609 per person for the April 14 voyage on Carnival Spirit.
Shorter cruises
A shorter cruise may be an attractive option if you don't have extensive vacation time or you prefer to spend a few days ashore before or after your sailing. If kids are in tow for the adventure – and it's your first time cruising with them – you might also want fewer days at sea to test the waters (literally). See our pick of competitively priced four- and five-night Alaska cruises, below.
Princess Cruises: 4-Day Alaska Sampler
This 2025 cruise aboard Discovery Princess includes one port of call, Ketchikan, and two days at sea between Vancouver and Seattle. This 4-Day Alaska Sampler itinerary is also offered on May 13, 2025, on Royal Princess , with a starting price of $327 per person. The reverse itinerary (Seattle to Vancouver) is offered on May 23, 2025, on Grand Princess; pricing starts at $347 per person.
Princess Cruises: 5-Day Alaska Sampler
If you want to sail with Princess for one extra day, consider booking the five-day sampler cruise sailing round-trip from Vancouver. This early season itinerary aboard Caribbean Princess calls on Sitka and Ketchikan, offering more time ashore to explore these two popular coastal towns along Alaska's Inside Passage. Guests will also have two sea days to enjoy activities and dining experiences on the ship.
How to find the best Alaska cruise deals
Book during wave season.
As previously mentioned, you can take advantage of some of the best deals of the year during wave season. Promotions offered during wave season include lower cruise fares, reduced deposits and onboard credits. You can also find special rates (or free fares) for the third and fourth guests in the same room, making this the perfect time to book a family cruise .
In addition, look for discounts on higher-level staterooms and suites, or even accommodations in exclusive areas of the ship, such as The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line or The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. These private spaces offer swanky extras like luxurious accommodations, all-inclusive pricing , butler service, a team of attendants and concierge service, as well as private restaurants, lounges and pools. With lower pricing, wave season may be the best time to splurge on a cruise vacation in one of these upscale enclaves.
Promotional pricing beyond wave season
If you miss booking your cruise during wave season, don't panic. Many lines offer special pricing and flash sales throughout the year and advertise lower fares for voyages during Alaska's shoulder seasons, which fall in May and September.
"You will always find the more affordable Alaska cruises toward the beginning and end of the season. This year, the Alaska cruise season begins in April and continues through October," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic. She adds, "The challenge with shoulder season Alaska cruises is that the weather might not be the best – it can snow in Alaska in April and early May – and in the fall, the nights will be longer (although, there is a chance you might see northern lights )."
In addition to giving up the warmer summer weather (and possibly having snow), you may also miss some optimal wildlife viewing opportunities if you cruise early or late in the season. For example, the peak time for bear-watching excursions extends from mid-June to mid-August, which falls during the height of the Alaska cruise season in July and August.
If you're looking for other ways to save money on your cruise, Gray Faust advises that older ships also provide more value when you're looking for deals.
It's important to note that a few of this year's wave deals extend just until the end of February 2024, so you'll need to refer to the individual cruise line websites to see the exact dates for the special offers. You may also be able to find lower prices on some discount and aggregator sites, like Cruise Critic, Cruises.com and Priceline.

VIEWS OF GLACIAL PROPORTIONS
With its winding fjords and gigantic glaciers, the best Alaska glaciers cruises offer unforgettable views. Spot silly seals playing on bobbing icebergs, or simply take in the vibrancy of the turquoise waters. These memories are sure to last a lifetime.
LIVE THE WILD LIFE
Endicott Arm Fjord Glacier is less frequently visited than its sister Tracy Arm, but its secluded nature only adds to its appeal. Catch a glimpse of imposing Dawes Glacier: It's actually formed by two glaciers meeting, one of which features an impressive icefall, a crevasse that looks like a frozen waterfall, into the fjord below. You're sure to see roaming wildlife here: Watch the waters for seals and sea otters, or look to the skies for a glimpse of soaring bald eagles.
FJORD THE TURQUOISE WATERS
As glaciers move, they grind the earth to flour that turns the waters that wind through the fjords a gorgeous opaque turquoise color. Take an excursion or tour through the water-filled valleys of Mendenhall Glacier to bathe in the light that reflects off of the compressed ice. You can kayak through Mendenhall Lake, which is actually created by the melting waters of the 3,000-year-old glacier.
ICE, ICE, BABY!
Age-old glaciers like Dawes or Mendenhall give way to meandering fjords all throughout Alaska . Kayak through the icy waters and catch a glimpse of the grazing caribou and the leaping mountain goats who frequent the massive mountains of ice.
ICY EXPEDITIONS
Sometimes, you want to relax and take in the views. Other times, you might prefer to take advantage of the thrilling adventures an area has to offer. With an Alaska glaciers vacation, you can do both at the same time.
TAKE A PAWS
A thrilling helicopter ride tour can transport you to the Norris Glacier on the Juneau Icefield. Meet with professional mushers and their spirited dogs for an unforgettable dog-sledding adventure of ancient proportions: Archaeological evidence suggests the Inuit have been getting around via dog sled since around 1,000 A.D.
GLACIER SIGHT-SOARING
Generally, Alaska glaciers are viewed from one angle, so you can see that they are massive, but flightseeing — taking a small, low-flying plane over the landscape for a true bird's-eye view — allows you to see just how vast these rivers of ice can be. Take up an excursion out of Misty Fjord in Ketchikan, or soar above the massive Denali mountain with a Talkeetna adventure tour group. You may even get the chance to climb one of these icy giants.
THE CAVERNS ARE CALLING
There's nothing quite like experiencing a glacier from the inside. Venture into Mendenhall Ice Caves or Matanuska Glacier Cave to see stunning views of intensely compressed ice — it's an otherworldly experience of actually standing underneath the glacial ice, which forms surreal landscapes like you've never seen before.

What to Know About Repositioning Cruises — Unique, One-way, Extended Itineraries That Can Be a Steal
Here's how to tell if a repositioning cruise is right for you.
What is a repositioning cruise?
Where do repositioning cruises go, and how long are they, what happens on a repositioning cruise, when do repositioning cruises happen, are repositioning cruises cheaper, 5 repositioning cruises to book now.
Glowimages/Getty Images
As I stepped off the pier and onto my ship in Ushuaia, Argentina, it dawned on me that this was the last time I'd be on continental land for nearly three weeks. Lindblad Expeditions' National Geographic Explorer was about to ferry me across the South Atlantic, all the way to Cape Town. Now that is a cruise.
In fact, it was a very specific type of cruise known as a repositioning cruise, or a "repo." Repositioning cruises do exactly what their name entails — they reposition a ship from one place to another. In the case of my sailing, National Geographic Explorer had just wrapped up a season in Antarctica and was scheduled for a stint in Africa. So, the ship sailed a repositioning cruise to get from one region to the other, bringing along a handful of intrepid travelers.
Read on to find out everything you need to know about repositioning cruises.
Westend61/Getty Images
Repositioning cruises reposition cruise ships — it's as simple as that. But to understand why cruise ships need to be repositioned, you have to look at how most cruise lines operate their vessels.
Generally speaking, cruise ships don't just crisscross the world on a series of one-way trips, sailing from A to B, then B to C, then C to D, and so on. Most ships spend months at a time "homeported" at a specific cruise port, such as Miami or New Orleans, or sometimes in a general region, like the Mediterranean. Then for the duration of a season, they'll sail either an identical itinerary or perhaps a few similar itineraries. Take, for instance, a cruise that's homeported in Miami for the winter. That ship might sail Eastern or Western Caribbean itineraries for a few months, but not necessarily the entire year.
"Due to weather and seasonality, most cruise ships don’t stay in the same geographic area for an entire year. They therefore must reposition from one region to another — and those cruises are referred to as repositioning cruises," Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor Rob Clabbers , president of Q Cruise + Travel, tells T+L . "For example, a ship that sails summers in Alaska may spend the winter in the Caribbean; and therefore will reposition in the fall to go from Alaska via the West Coast and the Panama Canal to the Caribbean, then back in the spring."
Depending on the route, cruise lines might choose to reposition ships without guests onboard. In that case, the crew might spend the time deep cleaning and performing maintenance on the vessel. But repositioning cruises still use a lot of expensive fuel, so many cruise lines opt to open them up to guests to help offset that cost — or even turn a profit, if they're lucky. From the guest perspective, you get to sail a non-traditional itinerary, which could take you to less-visited destinations. In my case, we ventured to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the extremely remote Tristan da Cunha, a tiny volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic that's only accessible by ship.

Clabbers shares some common repositioning routes below, but repositioning cruises can happen pretty much anywhere in the world. There is one rule for all repositioning cruises: They must be one-way.
- Between Mediterranean and South Asia: Traditionally via the Suez Canal, but more recently around the tip of South Africa.
- Between Antarctic and Arctic polar regions: Via the coasts of the Americas (might include an expedition onto the Amazon); or in some cases via the coast of Africa and Europe.
- Between Alaska and Japan: Via the North Pacific.
- Between North America and Australia/South Pacific: Via Hawaii and French Polynesia to Australia and New Zealand.
- Between Europe and North America: Via the Atlantic, which may also mean from the British Isles via Iceland and Greenland to Canada for the Canada/New England season in the late summer/fall.
- Between Alaska and the Caribbean: Via the West Coast and the Panama Canal.
As for how long repositioning cruises are, that varies. "Repositioning cruises, such as transatlantic sailings, are generally longer than a 'standard' seven-night itinerary and will include more sea days, as they have to cross a larger distance," says Clabbers.
But some repositioning cruises might be broken up into shorter segments. In the instance of a ship repositioning from Alaska to the Caribbean, there may be a West Coast sailing followed by a Central America sailing that transits the Panama Canal. While you could stack the two journeys to create one long cruise, you could also book it in shorter segments.
It all depends on where you're sailing. "Depending on the part of the world, the ships stop at fewer ports of call and/or stop in ports that are somewhat unusual because of their location," T+L A-List Advisor Olga Placeres, president of Preferred Travel & Co, tells T+L. She points to transatlantic cruises as an example — they have numerous sea days, but they also might stop in remote places like the Azores.
If you're repositioning on a mega ship , you'll likely get to fully immerse yourself in all the amenities that the ship has to offer. My transatlantic repositioning cruise was on a tiny expedition ship, which meant that the focus of our programming was education and adventure, so our sea days were filled with lectures and wildlife spotting — and plenty of time for contemplation.
Repositioning cruises can happen at any time of year, but most occur in the spring and fall, which are traditionally shoulder seasons for cruises. Some cruises use seasonality to their advantage. For example, when ships are repositioning from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean in the fall, they'll take advantage of fall foliage in the Northeast U.S. and Canada.
The short answer: It depends on demand. And demand depends on the itinerary and the size of the ship. "More unique itineraries — through the Panama Canal, or along some of the more unusual/off-the-beaten-path islands in the South Pacific — can be very high in demand, which is reflected in the fares," says Clabbers.
But not all repositioning itineraries appeal to the mass market, and cruise lines may struggle to fill the ship. "Fewer travelers enjoy a crossing with many sea days. Most guests wish to see ports, not only the ocean," says Placeres. "Weather is another factor — crossings can be rough, and you need to be a good sailor to enjoy a bumpy voyage." In those cases, demand can be low, and therefore prices (when broken down per day) can also be comparatively low.
Generally speaking, however, many repositioning cruises are, in fact, cheaper than more traditional week-long sailings. "There are many ships that sail from the Caribbean to Europe in the spring, including some of the larger contemporary cruise ships. That means there is quite a bit of capacity at a wide range of attractive fares each year for those that would like to travel between the continents," says Clabbers. "These cruises can be quite affordable, especially when looking at it from a per-day perspective. In addition, with fewer ports of call, the taxes and port charges may be lower, too."

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)
Seattle, a city on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, is surrounded by water, mountains and evergreen forests, and contains thousands of acres of parkland. Washington State’s largest city, it’s home to a large tech industry, with Microsoft and Amazon headquartered in its metropolitan area. The futuristic Space Needle, a 1962 World’s Fair legacy, is its most iconic landmark.
A city of southeast Alaska on an island in the Alexander Archipelago. A supply point for miners during the gold rush of the 1890s, it is now a major port and tourist center on the Inside Passage. Population: 7,450.
Considered the "gem" of Southeast Alaska, the city is nestled against the ocean, tucked tight against the mountains and back-dropped by the lush green of the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass. Visitors will find that Juneau is not only the state's capital, but it's also a melting pot of history, unique topography and jaw-dropping scenery that is found nowhere else on the planet. Whether it's wildlife viewing, glacier trekking, ziplining or just shopping for locally created artwork, visitors to this remote yet extraordinary region will certainly find a bit of "Alaska" to take home.
Skagway, with a population of 862, is located in the Upper Lynn Canal at the northernmost point on the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska, 100 air miles north of Juneau and 110 road miles south of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The City of Skagway is geographically the largest city in Alaska with 455 square land miles. Skagway's history and spectacular natural setting combine to create unparalleled sightseeing and recreation opportunities. Poke around on your own, or select from a variety of commercial tours. Either way, you will be amply rewarded with the sights and activities in and around Skagway.
Endicott Arm
Amid a forest of trees and a pristine mountain expanse you'll find a steep waterway otherwise known as Endicott Arm. The "arm" pierces 30 miles into the Coast Mountain Range offering up some spectacular sights for cruise passengers. Floating with you in Endicott Arm are 3-story pieces of ice that have "calved" (split) from the glaciers that line the waterway. Some of those chunks of ice are as long as a city block; some are as small as an ice cube. A visit to Endicott Arm proves that the best way to see and appreciate the wildlife and glaciers of Alaska is from the window or railing of your cruise ship. Keep those binoculars handy. As you move slowly and silently through the arm look for black and brown bears, mountain goats, wolverines, Sitka black-tailed deer, eagles, sea lions and harbor seals. Spectacular wildlife framed by glistening glaciers and blue, blue waters. Just another day in Alaska!
Vancouver, a bustling west coast seaport in British Columbia, is among Canada’s densest, most ethnically diverse cities. A popular filming location, it’s surrounded by mountains, and also has thriving art, theatre and music scenes. Vancouver Art Gallery is known for its works by regional artists, while the Museum of Anthropology houses preeminent First Nations collections.

Whittier to Vancouver Alaskan cruise – cost, itinerary, ports, and excursions
Do you know there are two Whittiers? One in California and the other in Alaska—the latter being the starting point of your cruise from Alaska to Vancouver.
After flying into Anchorage (Ted Stevens ANC being the nearest airport) for your expedition, you can reach Whittier via train, cruise, or taxi, relishing the sights of the city nestled between mountains and ice sheets.
The coastal route from Whittier to Vancouver offers nonstop scenic views of tidewater glaciers, rocky islands, cliffs, and marine wildlife.
Along the way, you’ll pass through the mighty Hubbard Glacier, the Icy Strait Point, and beautiful Alaskan cities like Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan before you finally arrive in Vancouver.
Fun fact: Whittier, Alaska vs. Whittier, Canada Travelers often tend to mistake the Canada ‘Whittier’ for the Alaska one due to their shared name. However, they are worlds apart in climate, geography, history, and population. Both cities are named after the 19th-century Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier, and that’s where the similarities end. Cruisegoers looking for icy Whittier in Alaska end up reading about sunny Whittier in California, which is far less exciting than the former. For instance, do you know that Whittier, Alaska, is known as a ‘town under one roof’?Interestingly, all residents live in a single building, Begich Towers—originally a World War II military facility. This building has everything from a post office, school, hospital, government offices, and even a grocery store. So, the next time you plan a trip to the last frontier, double-check whether you’re heading to the right Whittier!
Why should you choose an Alaska cruise departing from Whittier?
Whittier is an amazing city with fascinating history and civilization, making it a perfect departure point for many Alaska cruises.
You might think Anchorage would be an ideal port for docking a ship because of its comparatively larger size and accessibility. But Whittier has a deep-water port that helps accommodate large cruise ships.
Since this is a much smaller port, it gives an intimate feeling and a less-crowded experience to all its passengers.
Plus, its magical landscape surrounded by glaciers and mountainous peaks is a visual wonder.
There are several major cruise lines that offer a southbound route from Whittier to Vancouver.
Some of the most popular ones are the Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Oceania Cruises.
All these cruise ships are known for their luxury amenities, incredible dining, and endless entertainment.
Sailing through some of the remote locations on a luxurious ship, spotting marine wildlife, and enjoying the blissful scenery is just an unforgettable adventure!
Do you know that there were no roads in Whittier till the 2000s? Yes, Whittier’s roads were built only during the 2000s, with the existing railroad tunnel converted into a one-lane highway. Today, both the road and railroad run side by side, making this stretch a sight you ought not to miss.
Cost of Whittier to Alaska cruise
The ticket price for an Alaska cruise from Whittier ranges from $972 to $10,941 USD, depending on the cruise and the suite you select.
Here are the detailed costs for the Norwegian Jade ship from Norwegian Cruise Line on its 7-night Alaska cruise.
Note: Based on your interests, you can choose a 6-9 night or 10-14 night cruise. The cost varies depending on the ship and its destinations.
Itinerary of the cruise from Whittier to Vancouver
Your Alaska expedition starts from the port of Whittier and ends in Vancouver , Canada.
Here’s a detailed itinerary:
Which cruise line should you choose?
Here comes the tricky part—choosing the cruise line for your journey!
The idea is to match your interests with the cruise itinerary.
Overall, all these cruises are family-friendly and suitable for a romantic getaway, a wedding party, or a honeymoon.
Among the four cruise lines that venture from Whittier to Alaska, the Norwegian line has stops at Hubbard Glacier and Icy Strait Point, while the Holland America line takes you through Glacier Bay (there’s no heavenly substitute for this place).
The Oceania Riveria , on the other hand, visits spots like Icy Strait Point, Haines, Sitka, and Prince Rupert.
The Princess Cruises , by comparison, sails through popular places like Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and the Inside Passage before ending in Vancouver.
After identifying your route, the next concern is about the ship’s amenities. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.
Norwegian Cruise Lines are known for their flexibility and fun. For instance, they do not have a fixed dinner time and host some Broadway-style shows to keep you entertained.
Holland America Lines focuses mainly on cultural enrichment, and their cruises offer a more refined experience, enlightening cruisers with Alaska’s history and landscapes.
Now, if you’re looking for a luxurious and more intimate atmosphere, then Oceania is your best bet.
Meanwhile, Princess Cruises is all about elegance and comfort, with premium services, observation decks, and nature highlights that are perfect for nature lovers.
Ports and excursions
As you sail merrily down south, you’ll be mesmerized by the constantly changing panoramic views like glaciers, islands, mountains, and chances to spot wildlife.
The route from Whittier to Vancouver promises incredible scenery right from the ship, but that’s just the beginning.
You’ll have exciting on-land excursions at various ports of call, and they all provide equally vivid experiences.
Whittier, Alaska
Located on the Passage Canal and surrounded by the Chugach mountains, Whittier is truly a mystical city.
You can take a drive along the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest tunnel in North America, connecting you from Anchorage to Whittier.
Love camping? Welcome to Prince William Sound . And if possible, stay there for an overnight adventure.
You can book a private walking tour to learn more about Whittier’s history. Also, meet the unofficial mascot of Whittier, Manu the reindeer, who’s guest-friendly.
Remember, Whittier is a small city with few hotels. So, most tourists prefer to stay in Anchorage or will try booking a private transfer from ANC airport to Whittier in time for their cruise.
Icy Strait Point, Alaska
As the name hints, this is a hidden gem in Alaska, filled with unique adventures.
Perfect for wildlife spotting, this area is where tourists usually enjoy extended hours of whale-watching and catch glimpses of orcas and sea lions.
If you’re wild at heart, go on a bear-watching tour through the dense forests of Icy Strait Point.
Those who love to learn about the region’s natives can visit the Tlingit population and discover their traditions, art, and culture.
Need some exciting quests during your excursion? Take on the world’s longest zip line, the Icy Strait Point ZipRider .
And when it comes to the local cuisine, it’s not just about savoring fresh seafood—you’ll even have the chance to try your hand at salmon fishing and crabbing !
Juneau, Alaska
One of the most popular hotspots in Juneau is the Mendenhall Glacier .
Situated within the Tongass National Forest, the U.S.’ largest biosphere reserve, it is an ideal place to view Alaskan wildlife.
Other places to visit include the State Capitol Building, Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, several museums, and the historic South Franklin Street.
If you like to hike, Juneau has some of the best locations you’ll relish. Perseverance National Recreation Trail and the Mount Roberts Trail are the most popular.
Vancouver, Canada
The cruise ends in Vancouver, a vibrant city excellent for a post-cruise adventure.
You can scout out to Granville Island and Stanley Park or explore Gastown on a bike.
And if you’re also a mountain person, visit the Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge Park , the largest aerial tramway in North America.
With so many options available, Vancouver is the ideal place to continue your exploration after your cruise!
