Let us make your vacation truly unforgettable as you discover Tobago, a unique and untouched slice of paradise that will stay in your memory forever!

Best day in Tobago!! Our trip was amazing. It was by far the highlight of our trip to Tobago. Booking the trip was very easy and the communication was excellent. Anna reached out to us to find out exactly what we wanted to see and do. It was just my wife and myself and we had two tour guides. Kristen and Jason were awesome. They were both very friendly and patient with us, we never felt rushed to go to the next sight. We got to eat doubles at the street side stand, saw a lot of amazing waterfalls, and played on some amazing crystal clear water beaches. The provided lunch was delicious and got to feed hummingbirds from our hands. I feel like we made new friends today in Tobago! Thank you for everything!!!!

5 star rating

Worth every penny. I booked Island Girls to do an extensive tour of Tobago, and it was the best decision I could have made. David took me all the way up to Charlotteville and back, and on the way we stopped for some incredible doubles and had a lovely plated lunch not too long after. This tour truly felt like a fun excursion with a long time friend. I can’t wait to visit again with friends and family so that they too can experience the beauty of Tobago

memories of Tobago we will never forget it was a blessing to meet David, see and experience Tobago thru his eyes. we were a group of 6, and David made it super easy to customize a 10 hour tour, and everyone in our group loved the tour. he picked us up at the hotel, reviewed the itinerary, and our adventure began. our goal was to see the the whole Island, visit Argyle Falls, go for a swim, have lunch at the Hummingbird sanctuary, and hopefully experience a few hidden gems too. well we certainly weren't disappointed, in terms of what we saw, and throughout the entire tour, David would share his knowledge with us, and answered all of our questions. the van was comfortable, it was well stocked with water and rum puncheon, and the lunch we had was Michelin star worthy, with hummingbirds flying by ..... throughout the day, David took pictures and videos, which he shared with us and next time we go to Tobago, or Trinidad, we can hopefully book another tour with David.

Dawn to Dusk chasing waterfalls in Tobago This tour was absolutely amazing. I requested a waterfall, nature, hiking tour and that's exactly what I got. David from Island Girl Tours was a wealth of knowledge and kept the tour very interesting and informative. Chased 6 waterfalls, had lunch with hummingbirds, walked in a mangrove and hiked through a lush green forest, ended my 12 hr day at the beach with a beautiful sunset. Food, snacks and drinks were all included on my tour and as a solo female traveller I felt very safe and secure. I would highly recommend touring with David aka (the best barefoot tour guide) from Island Girl Tours, I left Tobago with a full heart.

Experiencing Tobago with the Best Tour Guides From our first contact with David through the entire tour it was an amazing experience. David made sure to get details about our group and worked with us to make this a one of a kind experience. He provided details about the day and listened to our input on what we wanted to experience. As a bonus for the day we were joined by his lovely wife Anna and together they provided extensive details about Tobago from many different perspectives. We toured the Argyle waterfall as well as some smaller ones. We saw beautiful beaches and were able to get pictures in multiple places. As a special treat we had lunch in the rainforest surrounded by hummingbirds at Shurlands Nature Park. Great meal in amazing surroundings. David and Anna are excellent guides and they made us feel more like family than just some tourist. We give this tour 5+ stars.

I've been to 20 Caribbean islands — these are the 5 I'd return to and the 2 I'd skip despite having great experiences.

  • After visiting 20 islands in the Caribbean , I have lots of favorites and a few I wouldn't return to.
  • St. Lucia offers wellness activities, fun nightlife, and great food.
  • Although I enjoyed my time on Grand Bahama, this island left me wanting more.

Insider Today

There's a misconception that all Caribbean islands are the same. However, as someone who's been traveling to the Caribbean for almost two decades, I've found that each island has its own distinct food, festivals, and cultural traditions.

After visiting 20 Caribbean islands, I can see why the area is such a hot spot for tourism. In fact, travel to the Caribbean is already off to a strong start this year, with many destinations seeing an uptick in visitors compared to 2023 .

As someone who's spent a lot of time in the Caribbean, these are the five islands I'd love to return to and the two I'd skip.

St. Lucia offers wellness activities and great food.

trinidad island tours

Though St. Lucia is typically billed as a romantic destination , I visited on a solo trip and had a blast exploring the island.

Some of my favorite activities included a mud bath in Sulphur Springs, a rum and chocolate tour, and an afternoon boat ride past The Pitons.

St. Lucians also have some great street food and love to have a good time. During my stay, I headed to the lively Friday night Gros Islet street party for grilled conch and fried fish straight off the boat.

Dominica is great for hiking and natural attractions.

trinidad island tours

Nicknamed " the nature island ," Dominica is one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets.

One of my favorite excursions was a hike to Trafalgar Falls, a pair of stunning waterfalls about a 20-minute drive from the island's capital city, Roseau.

I also rode horseback on the island's black-sand beaches and floated on an inner tube through Titou Gorge, a cave with a hidden waterfall and swimming hole.

St. John has gorgeous beaches.

trinidad island tours

I spent my 15th wedding anniversary on St. John, the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands. One of the highlights of my stay was a beach day at Trunk Bay.

The beach is located inside Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, and though there's a small entry fee, it's worth every penny. The beach is framed by lush mountains, and towering palm trees dot the wide, sandy shore. In short, it's paradise.

St. John isn't a hub for partying or late-night entertainment, but the island's gorgeous sunsets and natural setting are ideal for honeymoons and special anniversary trips.

Grenada is a snorkeling hot spot with a unique national park.

trinidad island tours

During my stay on Grenada, I encountered lots of warm and inviting locals, who would strike up conversations and ask how I was enjoying my visit.

Besides enjoying the popular Grand Anse Beach, I booked a day tour to Grand Etang National Park to check out Grand Etang Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by a lush rainforest.

I ended my stay on Grenada with a snorkeling trip to Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park to see the submerged sculptures.

Turks and Caicos are great for decompressing on the beach.

trinidad island tours

There's a reason Turks and Caicos are a magnet for celebrities and socialites, but you don't have to be an A-lister to enjoy the islands.

Providenciales is the most populated island in Turks and Caicos. Provo, as some locals call it, offers a laid-back, tranquil beach vacation. Most hotels on Provo are located along Grace Bay, a picture-perfect stretch of pearly white sand and turquoise water.

Water sports like jet skiing, snorkeling, and clear-bottom kayaking are popular, but I was content to spend most of my days alternating between reading on the beach and cooling off in the pool.

However, Grand Cayman was one of the priciest islands I’ve visited.

trinidad island tours

Grand Cayman has a lot going for it: beautiful resorts, delicious food, and a flight from Miami that's under two hours.

The soft white sand and sparkling turquoise water of Seven Mile Beach have also helped make Grand Cayman a popular vacation spot .

But when I visited, I experienced a bit of sticker shock since US currency doesn't go as far as it does on other islands. The Caymanian dollar has a fixed exchange rate, and one Caymanian dollar is worth $1.21 USD.

I've visited more affordable islands with equally stunning beaches like Klein Curaçao Beach in Curaçao, Crane Beach in Barbados, and Palm Beach in Aruba.

Grand Bahama left me wanting more.

trinidad island tours

One of my first trips to the Caribbean was to Grand Bahama via a ferry from Fort Lauderdale . My husband and I stayed on the island for about a week, filling up on fresh conch and visiting the Port Lucaya marketplace.

While I enjoyed the laid-back stay, I've found that other Bahamian islands have more to see and do.

If you want to be closer to the action, skip Grand Bahama for New Providence, which is home to top-notch restaurants and hotels, historic landmarks like Queen's Staircase, and the annual Junkanoo parade.

Market / Pitch Lake / 85ft Hindu statue & temple

Book online now!

  • Reviews 0 Reviews 0/5

Taking in the less-visited southern half of the island, this tour offers an opportunity to marvel at the sticky tar of the world-famous “Pitch Lake ”, shop at the lively markets in Chaguanas and admire the 85ft tall statue of the Hindu deity “Lord Hanuman.

Your drive leads you through the flat plains of Central Trinidad and the rolling hills of the South. The first stop is at a bustling fresh produce market and lively bazaar. Taste the exotic fruits and try a “doubles”, a tasty curry flavoured vegetarian street-food!

You then visit the unique Pitch Lake, the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world, spanning some 109 acres and said to be nearly 250 feet deep. Its asphalt has been used to pave roads and airport runways around the world, including at Buckingham Palace in England and La Guardia Airport in New York. The surreal surface of the lake looks something like elephant skin, your exciting guided walk takes about one hour.

Lunch today is a typical trini-east-indian dish – the roti. It is similar to a wrap, filled with curried potatoes and meat. Delicious!

Continuing on, visit the impressive 85feet tall statue of the Hindu deity Lord Hanuman and its adjoining ashram. Learn about this interesting part of Trini culture firsthand.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

THE PITCH LAKE:

British adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh claimed he ‘discovered’ the pitch lake in 1595 on his search for El Dorado. However, it was the Spanish who started to refine the pitch in 1792 and called it ’Tierra de Brea’, meaning land of pitch – the name eventually became La Brea.

First called ’piche’, the Amerindians believed it was created by the Gods as punishment. Legend has it the lake swallowed an entire tribe after they ate humming birds which were believed were the souls of their departed ancestors. To date, numerous Amerindian artefacts have been unearthed onsite, including a bench carved in the shape of an animal (with the carver’s name still clearly visible). Some of these can be viewed at the onsite museum. Indications of prehistoric life in Trinidad and Tobago have also been found – the rib and thigh of a giant sloth, along with a tooth identified as belonging to a mastodon.

TRINIDAD ROTI

Roti is a flour pancake or wrap, similar to, but lighter than a tortilla, and filled with various foods, including a choice of curried chicken, goat, beef, duck and potato channa (chick-peas). West Indian roti are mainly made from wheat flour, salt, and water. The word ‘roti’ across the Caribbean also refers to a dish of stewed or curried ingredients wrapped in a ‘roti skin’. Roti is hugely popular in Trinidad, where just under half of the population is of East Indian descent. Today Caribbean/East Indian dishes are quite different from traditional East Indian. In TnT there are different types of Roti including Dhalpouri, Dosti, Bus-up-shut (Paratha) and Sada roti, be sure to try them!

TRINIDAD DOUBLES:

The Indian community also created Trinidad’s favourite street food, ‘doubles’, made out of two rounds of fried dough, sometimes referred to as ‘barra’, filled with curried chickpeas and – on your request only – bathed in a hot chilli (pepper) sauce and other delicious sauces, e.g. tamarind, cilantro etc. You can get this all over Trinidad! It’s a MUST before you leave the island!
