Trek Fuel EX 7 29 review

Loads of modern tech wrapped around a well-known ride feel

Excellent rear suspension, sharp looks, modern tech, name brand notoriety

Narrow, flat bar, short top tube, front suspension can’t keep up with rear end

trek ex 7 2020

Trek’s Fuel EX 7 is an aluminum 29er trail bike with 130mm travel on both ends. Despite being loaded with modern technology, it reminded me of bikes from not long ago. As such, the Fuel EX 7 is an excellent bridge between old, outdated technology and all the new, modern, fun stuff we have now.

Base level is previous year’s top tier

This Fuel EX 7 sits one up from the starting point in Trek’s robust 13-model Fuel EX line up. Yet, you’d never know it. Trek has done a remarkable job on the aesthetics. Every part looks perfectly matched for a seamless appearance overall. That’s the beauty of having a giant house brand like Bontrager, Trek controls every aspect and detail.

It’s more than just the looks though. It’s loaded with the same technology as the brand’s expensive rigs. It uses the same Active Braking Pivot and Full Floater rear suspension designs, and is outfitted with wide 29in rims laced to Boost hubs, and even has an internally routed dropper post.

The frame is stiff front to back, has adjustable geometry, and remained creak-free. Trek’s turn-reducing, down tube-saving Knock Block headset felt odd when dorking around in parking lots but stayed largely unnoticeable on the trail.

Time travel back 10 or more years and this bike would’ve blown minds. It’s a lot of bike for the money and the parts are totally functional as is, and compatible with nicer components if and when needed.

Rear end overshadows the front

Trek’s Active Braking Pivot and Full Floater technologies make up the 130mm travel rear suspension. As one of the largest bike companies, Trek is able to work with Fox and RockShox and get the exact rear shock tune it wants for its bikes. It shows. The Fuel EX 7’s rear suspension comes closer to that mythical floating feeling than most.

On climbs, both traction and bump isolation were superb. And even though the Fox Performance Float damper had a lockout lever, I never needed or even wanted to flip it.

Descending saw much of the same with excellent support and tracking through rough trail sections. Throughout the 130mm of travel, it was smoothly consistent with zero hiccups or spiking. Trek has employed its ABP rear end for years and has really nailed its rear suspension leverage ratios: supple off the top, supportive in the middle, and good at resisting bottom out.

As good as the rear end was, the Reba RL fork up front wasn’t. RockShox Solo Air spring and Motion Control damping are outclassed compared to its own Charger damper and Fox’s Fit, Grip or Rhythm internals. The chassis was also too thin for a 29er wheel with 130mm of travel. Both of those things made for a long fork and the 32mm stanchions weren’t up to the task with noticeable flexing when whipping through turns.

The bike to bring riders into the new generation

Riding the Fuel EX 7 reminded me of bikes from a few years back. Thankfully, I’m not talking high-post hardtails with V-brakes and 600mm bars, but rather bikes of the mid 2000s.

A lot of this nostalgia came from the flat 750mm bar and 60mm stem. The geometry, too, nods at XC and light trail ripping with a 67.7 degree head angle which keeps the front end responsive. Trek also tilted the seat angle up at a pedal-friendly 74.7 degrees and the reach is a tad shorter than other 130mm travel 29ers.

Granted those numbers are close to today’s standards, but the riding position provided sits the rider forward, similar to how bikes felt years ago before everything got laid back and low.

That silhouette creates a trail rig that leans a bit towards the XC side, which for a bike in this sub $3,000 price range likely works very well for its intended audience. All told it felt more similar to bikes before the all-consuming long, low, slack phenomenon took over.

Bottom line: modern tech with a familiar feel

This bike is perfect for riders who prefer bikes a little more like they used to be, or for folks getting back into the sport after some time away. It’s brilliant for what it is as much as what it’s not.

It’s not super long, low, or slack. It’s not going to feel completely foreign to someone who was into riding in the past like some of today’s mega-stretched out rigs could.

Yet, it’s still loaded with all of the modern day tech. Boost hubs, single-ring drivetrain, and a dialed rear end all contribute to making a ride that is light years better than a bike from a few years back. All together it makes the Fuel EX 7 an excellent first ride or re-introduction into trail riding.

The Fuel EX 7 29 retails at £2,250 / $2,499.99 / AU$3,299 and can be purchased at Trek Bikes and local Trek bike shops.

2019 Trek Fuel EX 7 or 2020 Trek Fuel EX 5?

  • Add to quote

Hello, First post here. I'm just getting back into mountain biking and am in the process of purchasing a new full suspension Trek bike. Budget is in the low $2s and was set on getting the 2020 Trek Fuel EX 5. However, when I went to my local Trek, they had a 2019 Trek Fuel EX 7 on sale for about the same price as the EX 5. Specs are better in the EX 7, but I read that Trek made some improvements to the 2020 models. Considering I haven't biked in a while, I doubt I'll notice the improvements. I'm leaning towards the 2019 EX 7. Any reason why I shouldn't go this route? Anyone have experience riding both? Thanks

The 2019 was an astounding do-it-all bike. If your riding tends to be mostly on the more rugged side of things, the 2020 version takes a half step in that direction.

I would lean toward the 2019 FEX 7 because it has better specs and it is lighter.

I would take the 2020 as it has newer geo and the parts you can change if necessary but the frame is the core. Also 140mm front on 2020 makes it more capable. If you just use it for road or easiest trails take the 2019. Gesendet von meinem SM-N960F mit Tapatalk

Thanks for the responses. Okk1980 - I plan to ride easy to moderate level trails. Can you elaborate on why the 2020 geo is better? So its geo vs specs? The 2019 Fuel EX 7 has the better specs (based on my research): Fork: RockShox Reba RL > Rockshox Recon RL Rear Shock: Fox Performance Float EVOL > RockShox Deluxe Select+ Rear Derailleur: SRAM NX Eagle > SRAM SX Eagle Brakes: Shimano MT400 > Shimano MT200 Wheelset: Bontrager Line Comp 30

Hi Pcnj, you can check here regarding the changes: https://bikerumor.com/2019/08/15/20...with-long-slack-geometry-more-tire-clearance/ in general I would say the 2020 Fuel Ex moved up a bit more towards the Enduro category. The fork is 140mm instead of 130 before. Tires are 2.6 XR4 tires - so wider tires. Also the other geo changes are to give more support descending fast and comfortable on "rougher" terrain. So it is sacrifying a bit of "easy" climbing and on easy rolling on streets (wider tires have more resistance). If you don't do a lot of jumping or riding down very gnarly trails the 2019 might be the better choice. 2019 is more to XC side. So more optimal for long rides with lots of uphills. Hope this helps.

Another vote for the Fuel Ex 7. I'd always go for the higher specced bike and I'm not sure the geo changes are that significant for someone just getting back into the sport. Depending what you were riding before the 2019 FEX is still an excellent bike that I'm sure you will love.

You can probably extended the fork on the 2019 to 140mm if you ever want to. Or find a take-off Fox 34 reasonably priced. A friend had his 2018 9.8 break and got a 2020 9.8 frame under warranty says they are really not that much different but the 2020 suspension is better.

I think 2020 is a great bike. 7 vs 5=> Biggest thing is Really good wheels on the 7 and better gears and nice stiff 35mm fork. The 2019 reba is a 32mm fork, So if your heavy. Id lean towards a 2020 ex 7

get the 2019, then in the future upgrade the fork. youre not gonna feel that 10mm of travel, especially on the lower quality forks that are specced on those bikes.

Thanks for the responses. I've decided to go with the 2019 Fuel EX 7. I should be picking it up sometime in the next week. I'll you guys know my experience. Thanks again.

Has anyone had trouble with the sram 12 speed rear cassette bending it is the SRAM PG-1230 Eagle, 11-50, 12 speed the 11th gear has bent twice on me, should I upgrade or just keep rocking until .y warranty is up.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a full pardon Thursday for a former U.S. Army sergeant convicted of murder for fatally shooting an armed demonstrator in 2020 during nationwide protests against police violence and racial injustice.

Abbott announced the pardon shortly after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles announced a unanimous recommendation that Daniel Perry be pardoned and have his firearms rights restored.

Perry had been in state prison on a 25-year sentence since his 2023 conviction in the killing of Garrett Foster, and was released shortly after the pardon, a prison spokeswoman said.

Perry, who is white, was working as a ride-share driver when his car approached a demonstration in Austin. Prosecutors said he could have driven away from the confrontation with Foster, a white Air Force veteran who witnesses said never raised his gun.

A jury convicted Perry of murder, but Abbott called it a case of self-defense.

“Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive district attorney,” Abbott said.

A Republican in his third term, Abbott has typically issued pardons only for minor offenses, and he notably avoided a posthumous pardon recommendation for George Floyd for a 2004 drug arrest in Houston. It was Floyd’s killing by a white police officer in Minneapolis in 2020 that set off national demonstrations.

Abbott ordered the board to review Perry’s case shortly after the trial, and said he would sign a pardon if recommended. Under Texas law, the governor cannot issue a pardon without a recommendation from the board, which the governor appoints.

Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza blasted the pardon as a “mockery of our legal system.”

“The board and the governor have put their politics over justice,” Garza said. “They should be ashamed of themselves. Their actions are contrary to the law and demonstrate that there are two classes of people in this state where some lives matter and some lives do not.”

Abbott’s demand for a review of Perry’s case followed pressure from former Fox News star Tucker Carlson, who on national television had urged the governor to intervene after the sergeant was convicted at trial in April 2023. Perry was sentenced after prosecutors used his social media history and text messages to portray him as a racist who may commit violence again.

The sergeant’s defense attorneys argued that Foster did raise the rifle and that Perry had no choice but to shoot. Perry did not take the witness stand and jurors deliberated for two days before finding him guilty.

Perry acted in self-defense when confronted by an angry crowd and a person with an assault rifle, Perry attorney Clint Broden said after the pardon.

“The events of this case have always been tragic and, unfortunately, Garrett Foster lost his life,” Broden said. “Mr. Perry and his family thank the Board of Pardons and Parole for its careful review of the case and are grateful that the State of Texas has strong laws to allow its citizens to protect themselves.”

Foster’s girlfriend, Whitney Mitchell, was with Foster when he was killed. She called the pardon an act of “lawlessness.”

“With this pardon the governor has desecrated the life of a murdered Texan and U.S. Air Force veteran and impugned that jury’s just verdict. He has declared that Texans who hold political views that are different from his and different from those in power can be killed in this state with impunity,” Mitchell said.

The shooting set off fierce debate in 2020 amid the demonstrations sparked by Floyd’s death, and Perry’s conviction three years later prompted outrage from prominent conservatives.

Before sentencing in the case, Carlson aired a broadcast calling the shooting an act of self-defense and criticizing Abbott for not coming on his show. The next day, Abbott said he believed Perry should not be punished and told Texas’ parole board to expedite a review of the conviction.

After the verdict but before Perry was sentenced, the court unsealed dozens of pages of text messages and social media posts that showed he had hostile views toward Black Lives Matter protests. In a comment on Facebook a month before the shooting, Perry wrote, “It is official I am a racist because I do not agree with people acting like animals at the zoo.”

Perry served in the Army for more than a decade. At trial, a forensic psychologist testified that he believed Perry has post-traumatic stress disorder from his deployment to Afghanistan and from being bullied as a child. At the time of the shooting, Perry was stationed at Fort Cavazos, then Fort Hood, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) north of Austin.

This story has been updated to correct that Perry’s conviction was in 2023, not 2022.

Texas governor pardons ex-Army sergeant convicted of killing Black Lives Matter protester in 2020

Ex-Army Sergeant Daniel Perry was pardoned after he was convicted of murder in the killing of a protester

Texas Gov. Greg Abbot issued a full pardon Thursday to a former U.S. Army sergeant convicted of murder for fatally shooting an armed demonstrator in 2020 during nationwide protests against police violence and racial injustice.

Abbott announced the pardon just minutes after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles disclosed it had made a unanimous recommendation that Perry be pardoned and have his firearms rights restored. Perry has been held in state prison on a 25-year sentence since his conviction in 2023.

The Republican governor had previously ordered the board to review Daniel Perry’s case and said earlier that he would sign a pardon if recommended. The board, which is appointed by the governor, announced its unanimous recommendation in a message posted on the agency website and Abbott's pardon swiftly followed.

Abbott’s demand for a review of Perry’s case followed pressure from former Fox News star Tucker Carlson, who on national television had urged the Republican governor to intervene after the sergeant was convicted at trial in April 2022. Perry was working as a ride-share driver in July 2020, when he turned his car onto a street crowded with demonstrators and shot Foster before driving off.

Prosecutors argued at trial that Perry could have driven away without opening fire and witnesses testified that they never saw Foster raise his gun. As warmer temperatures hit the Pacific Northwest and the dirt starts to dry, I’m always eager to get out on some long rides with some big climbs. Naturally, when this Trek Fuel EX 9.9 showed up at the Freehub office, I knew it was time to put the nimble beast through its paces. I challenged myself to a 60-mile sufferfest on some of Bellingham, Washington’s toughest climbs and descents. It definitely didn’t let me down. Climbing on this bike was a joy. Trek equipped the 9.9 model with its proprietary RE:aktiv shock with a three-position damper, which I left wide open for the entire ride. The rear suspension had an overwhelmingly supportive feel while pedaling out of the saddle, yet as soon as I hit a bump it dived deeper into the travel, keeping the rear wheel firmly planted and providing excellent traction. The geometry is modern and balanced, with a long reach and a sensible 76-degree seat angle. On the descents, the bike inspired confidence, thanks to its long wheelbase and bottomless-feeling suspension. My confidence was further enhanced by the reliable stopping power of the Shimano XT brakes. As a 200-pound rider, I couldn’t have appreciated the ultra-powerful XT brakes and the 203-millimeter front rotor more—especially while bombing down some of Bellingham’s scariest double-black trails.

Sons of Anarchy's Biggest Villain Was Played by a Different Actor in the Pilot

The hit FX series Sons of Anarchy has been widely regarded as one of the most well-cast shows in the history of television. It not only helped elevate the careers of cast members like Charlie Hunnam and Ryan Hurst, but it also included highly memorable performances from legendary Golden Globe-winning talent like Katey Segal and Ron Perlman in particular. As the villainous Clay Morrow, the uncle/step-father of the protagonist, Jax Teller, Perlman gave a standout performance, channeling a vicious and intimidating energy that fans would be hard-pressed to forget. Some may be shocked to learn, however, that Perlman had nearly missed out on playing what has been thought of as one of his most memorable characters. In fact, in the original pilot, Clay was played by an entirely different actor.

It's definitely not uncommon for pilots of certain series to undergo a process of recasting when they get officially picked up by their home network. While most scenes of the original pilot remained intact, Clay was the only character that creator Kurt Sutter felt the need to rework with a different actor. In Sons of Anarchy 's case, it certainly seems like one that worked out for the best. For Sons of Anarchy fans, it's hard to imagine anyone else other than Ron Perlman being able to pull off the sinister charisma of Clay. But how exactly would it have turned out had Sutter chosen to stick with the original direction he had in mind for the character?

Who is Clay Morrow in Sons of Anarchy?

Fx's shgun already has the perfect sequel series.

At the beginning of Sons of Anarchy , Clay Morrow had taken over as President of the motorcycle club SAMCRO after the death of John Teller, and due to the health complications of its co-founder and original Vice President, Piermont "Piney" Wilson. After taking up the mantle, his nephew/stepson Jax Teller stepped up to serve as his VP. While the club was originally founded with the simple intention of societal rebellion, Clay had another direction in mind. Much to the reluctance of its other members, Clay got the gang involved in running guns for various criminal organizations, which only led to the group getting into trouble with other groups down the line. He was a severe danger to his own club as its leader, with a large majority of his decision-making being based on his own selfish interests rather than the interests of SAMCRO as a whole.

With Sons of Anarchy being heavily inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet , Clay is the show's equivalent of King Claudius. Just as it's revealed that Claudius killed his brother to take the throne as king of Denmark, it's later revealed in the show that Clay is responsible for the death of his brother, John. While SAMCRO operates on a strict code of rules, Clay has shown multiple times that he was not above abusing his power to break them whenever possible. This is especially apparent when he gives Tig an order to kill Piney's son, Opie when he is under the false assumption that Opie was serving as a rat for the authorities. A character like Clay required a certain type of actor to bring to life, and Perlman's gravitas not only managed to do just that, but it was one of many things that helped to also elevate the show's material.

Who Originally Played Clay in the Sons of Anarchy Pilot?

Without lucille ball, star trek would've failed before its pilot episode.

While it certainly may be hard for fans to imagine Clay being played by anyone other than Ron Perlman, the pilot episode of Sons of Anarchy was originally shot and completed with another actor in his place, one who many may recognize from various other projects. Actor Scott Glenn, who many remember from his supporting roles in such classic films as The Hunt for Red October and The Silence of the Lambs , had originally been cast in the role. Even though there hasn't been any concrete reason given as to why, Glenn's casting ultimately didn't seem to work for either Sutter or FX and his scenes were eventually all re-shot with Perlman in his place. Even though he was initially disappointed by the news, there's no need to feel bad for Glenn. He's since gone on to land some rather notable and impressive roles in other television shows. Marvel fans would be quick to recognize him as the mysterious Stick, Matt Murdock's mentor on Netflix's Daredevil series along with The Defenders , and his role as Kevin Garvey Sr. in the HBO cult classic The Leftovers has been cited as one of his personal favorites.

His scenes as Clay are unavailable online and were never made part of the special features on the show's physical media releases, seemingly making them lost for the time being. With this in mind, it's impossible to determine how exactly he would've measured up against Perlman if he had continued with the remainder of the show. In a 2020 interview with The Hollywood Reporter , he opened up about his experience with the pilot, claiming that his "unworkable" contract may have played a part in the choice to recast him. Fortunately for Glenn, he doesn't appear to hold any grudges or resentment over losing out on the part. He went on to say that "It was really fun doing the pilot for Sons of Anarchy . But… anything that would’ve gotten in the way of The Leftovers would’ve been really bad because it was the single best acting experience I’ve ever had.”

Why Ron Perlman Was Perfect For the Role of Clay

Why chad michael murray left one tree hill.

While Sons of Anarchy fans will never know for sure, it's entirely possible that Scott Glenn could've done just as good of a job as Ron Perlman did in the role of Clay. Glenn has proven the strength of his acting talents time and time again, but anyone who is even remotely familiar with Perlman's career or his sensibilities as an actor knows that he was practically tailor-made for a character like Clay. Throughout his career, he's played some notably goodhearted heroes like Hellboy but has mostly garnered a reputation for playing intimidating tough guys and some of the most despicable antagonists of all time (especially when it comes to voicing villains in animation ). For a character like Clay, there needed to be an actor who could pull off his unpredictability while maintaining the right amount of menacing charisma. On a purely physical level, with his imposing frame and a face that's impossible to forget, combined with his deep, gruff voice, Perlman brought some of his greatest strengths to the role.

Even though Glenn might've been able to pull off the role in his own way, it certainly would have changed the show itself in more ways than one. His performance could've been great, but it certainly would not have been the same; both the show's aesthetic and the dynamic between his version of Clay and the rest of the cast would not have worked nearly as well as it did with Perlman. One of the many reasons Sons of Anarchy was so successful and still continues to be talked about almost a full decade after its conclusion is just how well the cast (with Perlman, in particular) both worked with and elevated the material they were given. Recasts happen all the time in both film and television; sometimes it's for the best, while other times it can feel like it was a mistake. For fans of Sons of Anarchy , it can certainly be agreed upon that Sutter made the right move in giving the show's biggest villain the actor that it deserved.

"A world-class trail bike"

"Fuel EX is a beautifully balanced and capable trail bike. The rear suspension is beautiful; as close to ideal as any bike I've ridden. It's sensitive where you want it to be, firm and crisp where it should be. It feels deep and controls big hits very well, and there's a nice platform for pedaling, and to pump and pop off when you're playing."

"Good at pleasing everybody"

"Fuel EX has a few tricks that help it keep a level head when outside of its comfort zone, and to be a cloud on rails when it's in the zone. Everything about the Fuel EX, which was already good at pleasing everybody, is now even better at it."

"An absolute trail rocket"

"Thanks to its burlier components, increased travel, and more aggressive geometry, it has become more of a shredder than ever! More performance, fun, and trail prowess."
