I visited 5 of the best safari parks in Africa. The trip was filled with surprises, and there are a few things I wish I'd known before leaving.

  • I visited five of Kenya's best safari parks to see some of  Africa's most famous animals in the wild.
  • There were many aspects of the safari that surprised me despite the research I did before my trip.
  • I was surprised by many things, including how long I spent sitting in safari cars.

Seeing some of Africa's most famous animals in the wild has been on my bucket list for years. With adventure travel on the rise, I decided to take the plunge and make the 20+ hour flight to Africa to visit some of Kenya's best safari parks.

Masai Mara is arguably the most famous for big-cat sightings, but Amboseli National Park , Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, Nairobi National Park, and Hell's Gate National Park are also must-see reserves teeming with wildlife.

I did lots of research beforehand but found I was unprepared for many things I experienced while on safari — and there are things I'll definitely do differently the next time I go.

From what I should have worn to what seeing the animals was really like, here's what surprised me most about going on safari in Kenya.

I sat in the safari vehicle for about 8 hours every day

Between a morning and afternoon game drive, I spent about eight hours in the car daily. It was shocking to see the low number of daily steps on my Oura ring.

I started doing yoga at the end of the night to loosen up my hips. My airplane pillow also helped me stay comfortable, especially during the seven-hour drives to other parks.

My shoes were off for most of the drives

In hindsight, I should have worn sandals on my drives. Most safari vehicles have small windows and a top that lifts up, and you're frequently standing on the chairs to get a better view.

We took off our shoes when we got into the car so we were ready to hop up on the chairs at a moment's notice.

I had lots of early mornings and bedtimes.

The best times for safaris are in the mornings and at dusk, and sometimes, we had 4 a.m. start times. The lack of sleep , paired with the heat, made me eager to get to bed early.

I'm not a morning person, but I preferred the early drives for the animal activity (and incredible sunrises) we saw. We used the less-ideal safari hours during the day to nap, do other activities in the area, or drive to other parks.

Many animals can be difficult to spot due to distance or camouflage

We had our fair share of close-up sightings, but many of the animals we wanted to see were far away and sometimes not immediately obvious to the naked eye.

We ditched our iPhones and used binoculars and someone's camera viewfinder to get a closer look.

A pair of binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are essential for getting the best view (and pictures) possible.

There were long periods of time with minimal animal sightings

Safari drives can be frustrating because you can't control what animals you'll see, how far away they are, and how long the sighting will last. But being patient can be rewarding.

During one dusk drive, we spent three hours searching for a pride of lions without any luck. Finally, as the sun set in the last half hour, we stumbled upon three female lions napping, a leopard, and giraffes.

Many of the animals are sleeping during the day

I expected to see animals moving around or hunting, but many were resting during the day. It was only when dusk approached that they started to slowly stake out a spot by the grazing herds.

If I go on safari again, I'll book a night drive so I can see how the lions and other animals act during their peak hours of activity.

My view was largely out of my control

Whenever a less common animal like a lion or cheetah is spotted, a traffic jam of safari vehicles speed over and line up, vying for the best view.

What you see — and sometimes, if you see anything at all — can depend on your driver and what vantage point they can get.

Your view can also depend on your position in the car. I spent a lot of time scrambling around to catch a sighting (and a photo, if I was lucky).

Prey is plentiful, but seeing any action is unlikely

Gazelles and impalas were everywhere, so it was surprising to learn that the lions might not eat for days.

Our driver told us the best thing he's seen on safari was a cheetah hunting a gazelle, and then a pride of lions swooping in to steal his meal. However, these kinds of sightings are rare.

Predators need to consider everything from the direction the wind is blowing to the length of the grass when trying to sneak up on their prey. Many hunts are unsuccessful, so seeing one in person is unlikely.

Kenya floods hit Massai Mara game reserve, trapping tourists who climbed trees to await rescue by helicopter

By Sarah Carter

May 1, 2024 / 12:43 PM EDT / CBS News

Johannesburg — Tourists were evacuated by helicopter on Wednesday from Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve as devastating flooding in the east African nation hit the renowned wildlife sanctuary. More than 14 tourist camps were flooded, with tents being swept away as the Talek river burst its banks Tuesday afternoon.

The Kenyan Red Cross said in a message posted on social media that it had rescued 36 people by air and 25 others by ground.

Tour operators said the Talek gate, one of the park's entrances, was left impassable by the floodwaters and tourists were still waiting to be evacuated by helicopter.

  • Kenyan leader vows to help "victims of climate change" amid deadly floods

Tour driver Felix Migoya told Kenya's The Standard newspaper that both tourists and local staff were forced to climb trees Tuesday night to flee the surging waters as their camps were submerged.

Kenya Flooding

Meteorologists have warned that heavy rains will continue to batter the region in the coming days. Scenes of utter devastation continue to unfold as houses, schools and entire villages are swept away.

In Kenya, the death toll from weeks of flooding had reached 181 by Wednesday, according to government officials and the Red Cross, and many more people were still missing. Conservationists fear many animals have been swept away in the flooding, too.

The floods, triggered by unusually heavy seasonal rains and compounded by the El Nino weather phenomenon , have affected a vast swath of East Africa, killing dozens more people in neighboring Tanzania and at least a handful in Ethiopia.

Dam burst in Kenya leaves at least 42 dead

Roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure have been swept away and the government has been criticized over slow rescue efforts.

As the water continues to rise, rescue workers with the Red Cross and the National Youth Service continued to fan out searching for bodies Wednesday as bulldozers scooped away mud and debris.

At shelters for those displaced by the floods, many people worried about loved ones still missing, last seen being washed away by the torrents.

Kenya Flooding

President William Ruto, who's called those affected by the floods "victims of climate change ," has ordered the military to join in the search and rescue efforts. He visited flooded areas Wednesday and promised the government would rebuild homes, but he warned residents, "rain is going to continue, and the likelihood of flooding and people losing lives is real, so we must take preventive action."

He urged anyone still in "fragile areas that are prone to landslides and flooding" to evacuate to higher ground.

Residents of a Polk County mobile home park say during severe storms, if they want to seek safety, they have to leave the park.

A resident at Sunnybrook Mobile Home Park showed KCCI a message she received from park management during a recent severe weather event. It reads: "Attention Sunnybrook residents. In the event of a tornado, you can seek shelter at the Altoona Walmart or the local post office lobby. There is a tornado watch in effect until 9 p.m. Stay safe."

The message has raised some eyebrows, to say the least.

"I have five kids. And if there was a tornado here. I mean, tornadoes damage trailers quickly. I wanted to make sure that all my kids would be safe. If I have to go down the street to Walmart, that's about 10 minutes away I could be going into a tornado," said Miranda Rasmussen, a Sunnybrook resident.

She is not alone. In past years, Mina Puschinsky and others were able to seek shelter at the mobile home park's office. But during recent storms, the door was locked.

"They have someone on site 24 hours. So why couldn't somebody come and unlock it? This is something that is serious. If a tornado hits, you only have a matter of minutes to get somewhere safe. Who's going to get in their vehicle to drive somewhere safe? It doesn't make any sense to me," Puschinsky said.

KCCI spoke with the park manager, who reached out to his manager and said they would not comment. KCCI also sent text messages and left a voicemail, but did not get a response.

The most recent state law regarding emergency shelters says cities can require mobile home communities to have a storm shelter on site. If not, community or park owners would have to have an evacuation plan in place.

Polk County told KCCI that Sunnybrook is not required to have a shelter or evacuation plan because it was built before the legislation passed in 1999.

Tornado Kills 1 in Oklahoma as Severe Weather Batters Central U.S.

Millions of people were under tornado watches early Tuesday, after at least 15 tornadoes were reported across Oklahoma and other states.

Severe storms lashed the central United States early Tuesday, hours after a tornado in Oklahoma killed at least one person and destroyed parts of two communities.

At least 15 tornadoes were reported to have struck parts of the central United States by Monday night, seven of them in Oklahoma, according to the National Weather Service. More than eight million people across parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas were under tornado watches early Tuesday.

A tornado killed one person in the city of Barnsdall, Okla., on Monday night, said Sheriff Eddie Virden of Osage County, who added that the twister was up to two miles wide. Emergency responders were going door to door in the damaged areas early Tuesday to look for people who were injured, he said.

The tornado took out about a third of the small city, where it also injured multiple people who were hospitalized in about 20 ambulances, said Jerry Roberts, the emergency management director in Osage County. The tornado also lifted the roof off a nursing home in Barnsdall, said Steven Cobb, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Tulsa.

As the storm bore down, the National Weather Service issued a rare tornado emergency alert, which warns of catastrophic damage and severe threats to human life, for about 30 minutes in part of Osage County and Washington County in Oklahoma.

The tornado destroyed power lines along its path from Barnsdall to Bartlesville, leaving entire towns without electricity, Mr. Cobb said. Barnsdall was also hit by a tornado last month, but Monday’s tornado appeared more powerful, estimated to be a 2 or higher on the Enhanced Fujita scale , which goes from 0 to 5, Mr. Cobb said.

In Bartlesville, city officials said that emergency responders had rescued trapped individuals in a Hampton Inn and were recovering downed power lines early Tuesday. They said minor injuries had been reported, without saying how many.

At about 12:15 a.m. local time, the Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Oklahoma City and the area east of it.

In Garfield County, Okla., severe weather on Monday destroyed some barns, felled trees and sent cars hydroplaning into ditches, but no one was injured, said Mike Honigsberg, the county’s emergency management director.

The Weather Prediction Center warned of a slight risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley from Monday into Tuesday morning. The heavy rain could produce flash flooding in urban areas, roads, small streams and low-lying areas.

More storms are forecast for the next couple of days, primarily on Wednesday, from Texas to Ohio.

Last month, more than two dozen tornadoes were reported and at least five people were killed in Oklahoma and Iowa, including an infant, the authorities said.

Livia Albeck-Ripka and Jesus Jiménez contributed reporting.
